Though Umrah is not obligatory, performing the pilgrimage at least once in a lifetime is highly recommended by the believers of the Islam. The journey needs planning and prepping, and this blog is the Umrah guide you need to plan it well.

What is Umrah?

Umrah or the minor pilgrimage is a pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah. Muslims from around the world take on this journey to renew their faith in Islam and Allah. Unlike Hajj Umrah is not obligatory but makes an essential part of Islam.

Umrah requirements 2023

Here are the essential requirements to take on the Umrah journey:

1. Valid passport

Pilgrims are required to carry valid passport to Saudi Arabia for at least 6 months before embarking on the journey.

2. Umrah age requirements

There are no specific age requirements for performing Umrah. However, it is generally recommended that individuals be physically and mentally capable of performing the necessary rituals. Children are allowed to perform Umrah with their parents or guardians. However, it is important to ensure that children are able to tolerate the physical demands of the journey and the rituals, such as walking long distances and standing for extended periods of time. Elderly individuals or those with medical conditions should consult with their doctor before undertaking the journey and performing the rituals. They should also take any necessary medications with them and be prepared to adjust their activities and pace accordingly.

3. Umrah visa

One must obtain an Umrah visa, which can only be obtained through an authorized travel agency. The visa application process usually requires a passport-sized photo, a valid passport, and proof of vaccination against certain diseases.

4. Umrah vaccine requirements

Pilgrims are required to produce vaccinations against many deadly diseases such as chicken pox. Further in the lights of COVID-19, pilgrims will also need vaccination certificate for the same.

5. Round-trip ticket

Pilgrims must have a confirmed round-trip ticket, with a specific date of departure from Saudi Arabia.

6. Accommodation

Pilgrims must have a confirmed reservation for accommodation in Makkah and Madinah for the duration of your stay.

Best time to do Umrah

The journey of Umrah is not time-sensitive, but December and January are the popular months when many Muslims prefer to travel to Makkah. This is because of two reasons – one, it is the end of the Hajj season, and two because the weather during months is pleasant in Makkah. As a result, hotel bookings are also easier. Other months preferred by Muslims to go for Umrah include the first and second months of the Islamic calendar, that is Muharram and Safar. Since the Islamic calendar is 10 to 12 days shorter than the solar calendar, these months do not fall on the same date every year but this year the month of Muharram will begin on 9th or 10th August.

How to reach Makkah for Umrah?

Nearest airport : King Abdulaziz International Airport (IATA: JED) in Jeddah

From the airport : Cab is the most preferred mode of transport from the Jeddah airport to Makkah city.

Intercity Travel : Tourists can choose to see the city by bus or taxi. You can also rent a car. However, there are a lot of religious places around the mosque that are at walking distance.

The kingdom of Saudi Arabia issues a special visa for Umrah pilgrims that is valid for 30 days from the date of issue. To apply for the same, pilgrims need to approach the authorized travel agencies. They need to fill in an online application form and submit the NOC certificate from their employees and a letter proving their religion, amongst other things. Besides authorized agencies, government-approved agents are also responsible for looking after pilgrims’ travel and lodging arrangements and can be contacted for the same.

Rituals of Umrah

Umrah brings peace and earns pilgrims many rewards in this life and the life hereafter. It consists of four rituals that Muslims need to perform in order to complete the journey. The first step is Ihram when the pilgrims enter the state of purity and devotion after performing Ghusl and donning Ihram garments. Next, they perform Tawaf around the Kaaba, circling it seven times counter-clockwise. In the third step – Sai, pilgrims walk between the hills of Safa and Marwa while reciting supplications. Lastly, the pilgrims shave their heads and officially complete the pilgrimage.

Umrah guide for females

For women performing Umrah, there are some special rules and guidelines that they need to observe during the pilgrimage. These rituals are mainly established to avoid attention so that everyone appears equal before Allah. One of these rules is that the female pilgrims should not wear any kind of makeup during Umrah. They must not wear a headdress that covers their forehead. Also, females must not undertake Umrah during their menstruation cycle.

Imana – Umrah 2022

Umrah, roughly translated, means the “minor pilgrimage” and is undertaken by Muslims when they enter Mecca. Mecca is the holiest place on earth in Islamic culture and is located in the Hejazi region in Saudi Arabia.

Umrah celebration s are performed throughout the year, as pilgrims undertake a spiritual journey around the Ka’aba to purify their mind, body, and soul. What is Umrah, How is it Different From Hajj?

Each year, millions of Muslims across the world undertake a spiritual journey to visit the Ka’aba in Mecca. This pilgrimage is often referred to as Hajj, or Umrah, depending on certain aspects that differentiate the two.

Hajj is a compulsory pilgrimage, and one of the five pillars of Islam. It is therefore obligatory for every Muslim who is capable in terms of financial and physical fitness to perform Hajj at least once in their lifetime.

Hajj is often time-consuming with a lot of rituals and detailed rites, and therefore takes multiple days. It is also performed only on specific dates based on the Islamic lunar calendar.

On the other hand, Umrah is considered to be the “lesser privilege” as it is not compulsory, but still important. You can perform Umrah- 2022 throughout the year, without waiting for the auspicious Hajj dates. It generally takes only a couple of hours.

It is important to note that Umrah cannot be interpreted as a substitute for Hajj despite the fact that certain aspects of both rituals are quite similar. 

Hajj and Umrah are also connected due to the two types of Umrah:

• Al Umrah Al Mufradah – an optional form of Umrah performed before Hajj
• Umrah Al Tammatu – obligatory Umrah performed as part of the Hajj rites

Rituals you Need to Know About Before Performing Umrah 2022

The Saudi Arabian government has finally opened applications for Umrah 2022 for the first time since the pandemic. For those wishing to take advantage of this, or who are simply curious about Umrah, here’s everything the pilgrimage entails:

Male pilgrims are supposed to wear a sacred attire, known as Ihram, before entering Al Masjid Al Haram, which is the sacred boundary of Mecca. It is also compulsory to perform Ghusl before donning this attire. 

Tawaaf refers to when the pilgrim circles the Ka’aba seven times, in an anticlockwise direction.

The tawaf begins at Hajar Al Aswad (The Black Stone), where the pilgrims stand facing the Ka’aba with their hands raised. They recite “Bismillahi Allahu Akbar ” and begin moving to their right. 

Men are meant to hurry through the first three rounds and walk at a leisurely pace for the remaining four rounds.

Once the Tawaf is completed, pilgrims must perform Salat of Tawaf, praying two rak’ahs, after which they drink the holy Zamzam water from the Well of Zamzam.

Umrah pilgrims are meant to perform Sa’iy, which entails walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah while reciting “Subhan Allah”. Each round is around 492 yards long.

At the end of the seventh round, pilgrims must stand at Marwah, facing the Ka’aba and recite the same supplications as those that were recited at Safa.

Halq or Taqsir

Halq or Taqsir is the last ritual in Umrah and involves:

• Partial shortening of the hair for women (about an inch short) 
• Complete shaving of the hair for men

This signifies the submission of will to God and renounces the glorification of physical appearances. 

Once these rituals are performed, the Umrah is considered complete, and pilgrims can change out of their Ihrams.

Different groups of Islam may have minor differences or modifications to the methods by which they perform these rituals. Overall though, Umrah remains a unification factor across all Muslim communities.

Moscow Metro: The Complete Guide

The Moscow Metro is busy, but easy to use

With nearly 7 million riders per day on its 16 lines, the Moscow Metro is the sixth-busiest metro system in the world as of March 2019. Riding the Moscow Metro, however, does not need to be a stressful experience. In fact, it's by far the easiest and most enjoyable way to get around Moscow, especially since many Moscow Metro stations are veritable works of art. Our guide to the public transportation will teach you how to ride the Metro and more.

How to Ride the Moscow Metro

Here is some essential practical information you need to know to easily and seamlessly ride the Moscow Metro.

• Fares: Moscow Metro fares start at 55 rubles for a one-way ticket, which is good for five days after purchase. You'll pay more if your journey takes you outside of the central Moscow zones of A and B, though this is not the case for most tourists.
• How to Pay: Cash is the only way to buy a one-way ticket. However, if you have Apple Pay or Samsung Pay, you can tap your phone directly at the ticket gate and enter using NFC technology. You can also use both mobile payments and credit cards to top-up your reloadable Troika card.
• Routes and Hours: The Moscow Metro has 13 lines that snake and criss-cross the city, plus outer and inner loop lines that string them together, as well as a monorail. The Moscow Metro is open from approximately 5:30 a.m. to 1 a.m., and trains run with a frequency that can range between 1 and 7 minutes.
• Service Alerts: Download the official MosMetro app on the AppStore or Google Play .
• Transfers: Regardless of how you pay to enter the Moscow Metro, you can transfer to any of the core lines plus the Moscow Monorail without passing through an additional ticket gate. If you wish to transfer to bus lines, airport trains or other rail services, paying with Troika or your mobile device might be more convenient.
• Accessibility: Although Moscow Metro is impressive and modern in many ways, it is not very accessible . Visitors who use wheelchairs should try to avoid the subway and take aboveground transportation instead.

Beautiful Moscow Metro Stations

The Moscow Metro has achieved internet notoriety — and not just because of how busy it is. Several Moscow Metro stations are distractingly beautiful, including:

• Aviamotornaya: Brilliant gold themed to the flight of Icarus.
• Komsomolskaya: Bright yellow ceilings and murals chronicling Russia's journey to independence.
• Mayakovskaya: Art Deco, featuring mosaic ceilings and pink marble floor
• Park Pobedy: Modern station (built in 2003) with colorful murals; one of the deepest metro stations in the world (276 feet below ground!).
• Ploschad Revolutsii: Constructed in 1938 at the height of Soviet pride, this station is home to bronze statues that locals still rub for good luck.

Although it's technically legal to take pictures within the Moscow Metro, guards might approach you if you spend too long photographing a particular station, or use professional equipment like a tripod. Be as discreet as possible to avoid an uncomfortable confrontation!

Other Moscow Public Transit

In addition to the (mostly) subterranean transport offered by the Moscow Metro, Russia's capital is home to a number of aboveground transport options. This includes a large network of buses, as well as trams and "trolley buses." While these are all cheaper than the Moscow Metro, they also require some command of Russian to use; the ordinary buses are also subject to sitting in Moscow's terrible traffic.

In terms of payment, your Moscow Metro ticket isn't valid for transit to any other form of transit, though a Troika card will allow you to do so seamlessly. Likewise, while the various Aeroexpress trains (between Sheremetyevo Airport and Belorussky Station, Domodedovo Airport and Paveletsky Station and between Vnukovo Airport and Kievsky Station) feature modern vehicles and offer fast, reliable connections to Moscow's major airports, these lines are not considered to be part of the Moscow Metro system.

As noted earlier, the Moscow Metro is technically organized by "Zone," with the center of Moscow being occupied by the "A" and "B" zone. Again, you shouldn't worry too much about this. If you're hanging out in the parts of the city, you probably speak enough Russian to be able to ask a local for advice!

Taxis and Ride Sharing Apps

The bad news? It is exceedingly unlikely that a taxi drive in Moscow will speak English. The good news? Uber works in Moscow as of March 2019, which means that if you have the app installed on your smartphone (and a Russian SIM card, which you can pick up at Moscow Airport), your next Moscow ride is basically a matter of plug-and-play.

Russia also has a number of homegrown ride sharing apps, though these aren't as ubiquitous as Uber — they also don't have good English-language interfaces. If you're interested in learning more about them, in any case, be sure to visit the websites of InDriver or Taxi Maxim . Keep in mind that many of these applications require Russian credit cards, or a Russian bank account to pay for rides.

Security-wise, the technological aspect of using ride sharing apps in Russia makes them relatively safe. On the other hand, taxis have a dodgy reputation at best. If you do end up needing to take a taxi in Moscow, make sure to use a registered car. The ones waiting at the airport stands are generally legitimate; within the city limits, try and have your hotel call a taxi to be safe.

Renting a Car in Moscow

Traffic in Moscow is reliably awful, to say nothing of how difficult navigating the city's serpentine network of ring roads and one-way streets can be. However, if you do want to rent a car in Moscow (or in Russia, more generally) there are some facts you should keep in mind.

Documentation wise, it's not officially necessary to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) — your US driver's license will work, at least if you plan to drive in Russia for less than six months. However, it might serve you well to get an IDP (you can apply at your local AAA office) for peace of mind. In Russia as in the US, you drive on the right side of the road; gas costs about 40 rubles per liter, or about $2.40 per gallon.

Another potential downfall of renting a car of Russia is the threat of interactions with Russian traffic police. While this doesn't put you in any mortal danger, there is a chance you'll have to bribe your way out of any confrontation, which outside the center of Moscow or other Russian cities will almost certainly necessitate some Russian language or body language skills.

Tips for Getting Around Moscow

Regardless of whether you take the Moscow Metro or any of the other transportation options listed here, these general tips for getting around Moscow will serve you well:

• Moscow's city center is very walkable. Unless you're visiting on a bitterly cold day during the middle of winter, many of Moscow's attractions are close enough together that you could walk. For example, you can easily walk from Red Square to Gorky Park, Bolshoy Theatre , Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts , the Kremlin or simply along the Moskva River.
• All roads lead to Red Square. Although Moscow is not a grid-pattern city, it is relatively organized. The majority of major roads start and end at Red Square; the rest are circular ones that connect the "spokes" from Red Square. With this basic idea in mind, it's pretty difficult to get lost in Moscow!
• Moscow's awful traffic means that rail is usually the quickest option. Even if the physical distance between two places is shorter by car, traveling via the Moscow Metro is probably going to be quicker.
• English signage in Moscow has greatly improved over the years. On the other hand, familiarizing yourself with the Cyrillic alphabet before your trip to Russia probably wouldn't be a bad idea. If you need to push someone out of the way (spoiler alert: you probably will!), say izvineetye (sorry) to excuse yourself.
• Petty theft is common, especially during rush hour. Wear your backpack in front of your body, and don't keep large amounts of cash (or your smartphone!) in your back pocket. Hide any conspicuous signs of wealth to avoid being a target!

The Moscow Metro is easy to use—once you get the hang of it. After all, more than two billion trips take place across its rails every year. If it were difficult, this simply wouldn't be possible! The Narodnoye Opolchenie and Mnevniki stations of the Moscow Metro’s Big Circle Line (Line 11) were opened to passengers in April 2021. The new stations were constructed as part of the 5.5km-long western section of the BCL between the Khoroshyovskaya and Mnyovniki stations.

The government plans to open 11 new metro stations of the BCL by the end of 2021. The new stations will include Karamyshevskaya, Terekhovo, Kuntsevskaya, Mnevniki, Aminyevskaya, Michurinsky Prospekt, Davydkovo, Prospekt Vernadskogo, Kaluzhskaya, Zyuzino, and Novatorskaya.

Approximately 70% of the line will be available to passengers by the end of 2021. Being implemented as a three-stage construction project, the Big Circle Line is scheduled to be completed in late 2022.

Route details of the Big Circle Line

The Big Circle Line (BCL) will connect current and future radial lines up to 10km from the original Circle Line to mitigate the congestion problem in central Moscow.

The new line will feature several transfer points with current and new radial lines such as the Rublyovo-Arkhangelskaya and Kommunarskaya lines. The Rublyovo-Arkhangelskaya Line that is under construction will connect with the BCL at the Ulitsa Narodnogo Opolcheniya station, while the Kommunarskaya Line will have a link at the Ulitsa Novatorov station.

The project will create change points at 20 stations on 11 radial metro lines, three stations on the Moscow Central Circle (MCC) rail, 13 stations on the Moscow Central Diameters, and 11 railway stations. The major transit hubs will be Delovoi Tsentr, Nizhegorodskaya, Savyolovskaya, and Ulitsa Novatorov.

Details of Big Circle Line project

The initial 11.5km-long section of the BCL reduced the burden on the northern sections of Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya and Zamoskvoretskaya lines.

Opened in 2018, the Savyolovskaya station is one of the deepest stations, located more than 65m below the surface.

The station relieved the burden on the Savyolovskaya station of the Serpukhovsko-Timiryazevskaya Line. Furthermore, it allowed passengers to travel between the Savyolovskaya and Rasskazovka stations without changing.

The BCL’s 14km-long north-eastern stretch is the most difficult section across the line. It passes underneath two metro lines and three railway lines, resulting in the manual operation of most tunnel-driving activities.

The section encompasses seven stations, namely Aviamotornaya, Lefortovo, Elektrozavodskaya, Nizhegorodskaya, Rizhskaya, Sokolniki, and Maryina Roshcha. It will be connected to the Nizhegorodskoye railway maintenance facility through a 1.9km-long route.

A section near the Nekrasovskaya Line was opened to the public in March 2020. The pink line currently includes the Lefortovo, Aviamotornaya, and Nizhegorodskaya stations.

The 9km-long western section of the BCL will include four stations, namely Ulitsa Narodnogo Opolcheniya, Mnyovniki, Karamyshevskaya, and Kuntsevskaya.

The tunnel between the Khoroshevskaya and Karamyshevskaya stations has been completed. The trains will travel between the stations via a 10m-wide double-track tunnel.

Other sections of BCL

The 9.2km-long south-western section of Kuntsevskaya-Prospekt Vernadskogo is split into the Kuntsevskaya-Aminyevskoye Shosse, and Aminyevskoye Shosse-Prospekt Vernadskogo segments.

The section includes the Davydkovo, Aminyevskoye Shosse, Prospekt Vernadskogo, and Michurinsky Prospekt stations.

In April 2017, construction started on the southern section of the line between the Prospekt Vernadskogo and Kakhovskaya stations.

Expected to be completed by November 2022, the 7km-long segment will be served by the Ulitsa Novatorov, Vorontsovskaya, and Zyuzino new stations.

The 11.4km-long eastern stretch of the new Russian railway line between the Kashirskaya and Nizhegorodskaya stations is anticipated to be completed by late 2022.

The segment will include Klenovy Bulvar, Nagatinsky Zaton, Pechatniki, and Tekstilshchiki stations. A huge double-track tunnel is being built to allow trains to travel between the Tekstilshchiki and Klenovy Bulvar stations.

Rolling stock of the world’s longest circle line

The new railway line in Moscow will feature the Moskva new-generation metro trains. The first set of Moskva trains was launched on the most crowded Tagansko-Krasnopresnenskaya Line (Line 7) in 2017, which transports 1.2 million passengers a day.

The new generation trains are also used on the Kaluzhsko-Rizhskaya Line (Line 6) and the Filyovskaya Line (Line 4) of the metro.

The walk-through carriages of the advanced trains are designed to enable the movement of persons with disabilities. Each train has wide doorways and eight carriages with the capacity to accommodate 330 passengers. Amenities inside the train include interactive media screens and mobile charging stations.

Other features aimed at improved passenger experience include better soundproofing, and heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems .

Project benefits

The opening of the western section of the BCL reduced the peak hour headway at the Savyolovskaya-Khoroshyovskaya section by 15 minutes from two hours 45 minutes to two hours 30 minutes, leading to an increase in passenger seats by 2,600. Opened in April 2021, the Narodnoe Opolchenie and Mnyovniki stations are projected to accommodate 42,400 passengers a day.

The overall ridership of the stations is expected to rise to 95,400 passengers a day in the future. Travel times are estimated to decrease by up to 40 minutes on some routes due to convenient connections to Lines 2, 7, and 9.

The new stations are expected to encourage up to 5,500 new passengers to switch to railways as the mode of transportation, reducing congestion on the nearby streets by up to 11%.
