10-year veteran Kevin Pillar says he's likely to retire after 2024 MLB season

angels travel baseball team

Just two months ago, 35-year-old outfielder Kevin Pillar was sitting home in Scottsdale, Ariz., unemployed, and released by the worst team in baseball, the Chicago White Sox.

He hated the idea that his 9-year, 10-month career was going to end this way.

He desperately wanted to reach 10-year service-time milestone, and getting 1,000 career hits sure would be nice, too.

Well on Saturday, Pillar walked into the visiting clubhouse at Wrigley Field, and there were balloons, streamers and bottles of wine awaiting at his locker.

He reached the 10-year anniversary in what he believes will be the final season of his career.

Follow every MLB game: Latest MLB scores, stats, schedules and standings.

Angels GM Perry Minasian, who was with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2011 when they selected Pillar in the 32nd round of the 2011 draft, and picked him off waivers when Mike Trout underwent knee surgery this year, spoke about Pillar’s accomplishments in front of the team. Pillar followed with his own speech.

“Great guy, great makeup, makes the guys around him better," Minasian said. “He’s been the through the good, the bad. He’s been an everyday player. He’s been a bench player. A platoon player. He’s been unbelievable."

Who would have imagined that after hitting .160 for the White Sox, and wondering if he’d play again, he would be hitting .299 with six homers and a .867 OPS, while eclipsing the 1,000-hit mark?

Now, after being with nine different organizations since 2019, he wants to go out on his terms.

“I watched some of my good friends and teammates, who were much better players than me, maybe go a year too long," Pillar told USA TODAY Sports. "I think it would be kind of cool to go out playing really well, and people being curious to why you don’t want to play anymore, and not that the game kicked you out.

“Not everyone really gets that opportunity in this game. I was very close to not getting that opportunity. I don’t know what the future looks like, even in this year, but if I can keep up what I’m doing and having a a very good offensive year, it might be a cool thing to leave people wanting more. It might be cool for people to ask, “Why wouldn’t you want to do it anymore as opposed to, you know, fading away.’’

Pillar remembers former Blue Jays teammate Jose Bautista being a six-time All-Star and one of the most feared hitters in the American League – twice leading the league in home runs – to playing his final seasons bouncing around and no longer wanted.

“There are some people whose lasting impression of him is bouncing around from team to team,’’ Pillar said, “and not the same fearful hitter that he once was. … Wouldn’t it be a cool thing for him to have gone out, maybe on top of your game, and people thinking, 'Man, he could still play.’

“You don’t want it to be like, “Is he retiring, or is it because he can’t get a job?’ Not too many people get to actually retire. So, people like [former Astros outfielder] Michael Brantley, he chose to retire. If he wanted to play, everyone in baseball knows he would have had a job. He gets to choose retirement. Not a lot of people get to do that. They say they’re retiring, when really they can’t get a job."

So, is this definitely it?

“In my heart, I’m 98% sure," said Pillar, married with two children, 6 and 4. “Obviously, things change but I think just going through another off-season of the unknown, and what kind of stress it puts on me and my family, is not healthy. If I’m fortunate enough to get a phone call early in the off-season, and someone wants to give me some money and a job, it’s going to be a conversation I’m going to have with my family.

“But I’m just going to enjoy this, play for the love of the game, and will be at peace at whatever happens.’’

CHICAGO — Tyler Anderson threw eight dominant innings and Jo Adell homered to help the Los Angeles Angels end a five-game skid with a 7-0 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Saturday.

Anderson (8-8) gave up a leadoff single, then retired the next 13 Chicago batters before allowing another hit to cruise to his third win in his last five starts. The lefty matched his career-best 10 strikeouts and allowed just three hits with no walks.

Logan O’Hoppe added two hits and a pair of RBIs for Los Angeles, which saw all nine starters get at least a hit after the club managed just a run in its prior three losses.

Ben Joyce pitched a clean ninth to finish the shutout.

Chicago starter Kyle Hendricks (1-7) left after two innings with low back tightness. He surrendered the Angels’ first two runs and walked two with four hits as he dropped his third straight decision.

The Cubs, seeking a third straight victory, have dropped nine of 13. Nico Hoerner had two of the team’s four hits.

Colten Brewer, the first of five Chicago relievers, gave up three runs — one earned — in a two-error third and Adell homered to deep center two innings later off Drew Smyly.

The Baltimore Orioles announced the signing of former Los Angeles Angeles Angels utility player Niko Goodrum to a minor league contract on Sunday.

Goodrum is on his fifth organization of the season after clearing outright waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates on June 17. Going back to spring training, Goodrum has spent time with the Minnesota Twins, Tampa Bay Rays, Angels, and Pirates this season.

Despite playing with so many organizations this year, Goodrum has only appeared in 13 big league games between the Angels and Rays. He appeared in nine with Tampa Bay and four with Los Angeles going 3-for-29 with 10 strikeouts. He’s hitting .103/.188/.103 on the year.

Goodrum has 75 Triple-A plate appearances on the year batting .270/.387/.444. He has drawn 11 walks with three home runs in that limited sample.

The 32-year-old switch hitter has spent parts of seven seasons in Major League Baseball. He’s a career .224/.297/.383 hitter with 1,564 big league plate appearances. Goodrum spent 2023 between Triple-A Worcester in the Boston Red Sox’s system and with Lotte in the Korea Baseball Organization. He batted .295/.373/.387 in 201 KBO plate appearances.

He provides a depth option at virtually every position outside of catcher and center field.

Kevin Pillar’s walk-off single in the 10th lifts Angels to sixth straight win

Kevin Pillar hits a walk-off single in the Angels' 6-5 comeback win over the Detroit Tigers at Angel Stadium.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

Kevin Pillar ‘s single with one out in the 10th inning drove in Taylor Ward and the Angels extended their winning streak to six, rallying for a 6-5 victory over the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night.

“Belief. You can feel the energy changing where maybe earlier we talked about going out and winning and hoping we win. I think we’re starting to expect that every time we go on the field,” said Pillar, who had the fourth walk-off hit of his career and first since 2018.

With Ward as the automatic runner in the 10th, Luis Guillorme had a sacrifice bunt to move Ward to third. Detroit decided to have five infielders with Pillar up and the outfielders playing in left center and right center. Pillar, who came in as the designated hitter in the seventh inning, hit a looping single into left off Jason Foley (2-2) for the Angels second walk-off victory of the season.

Angels star Mike Trout confident he’ll return by late July: ‘I’m itching to hit’

Injured Angels star Mike Trout isn’t sure exactly when he’ll return, but he would be disappointed if he wasn’t playing by the end of July.

June 29, 2024

“The 10th inning set up perfectly for us. We had a guy who could bunt and a guy in the hole that has been in those situations before,” manager Ron Washington said.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said they tried to play to Pillar’s pull side with the five-man infield, but he was able to get underneath the sinker.

“We played a good game. We didn’t play one or two runs enough to win it. It’s tough to start the road trip this way,” Hinch said.

The Angels trailed 5-2 before coming back. Ward had a two-run double in the seventh inning and Logan O’Hoppe tied it with a solo shot to center to lead off the eighth. It was the second straight night the Angels’ catcher homered in the eighth inning.

“We had some opportunities when we didn’t put the ball in play, but we kept grinding in every inning. Then Taylor came up with the big move to get us back in the game,” Washington said.

Angels designated hitter Kevin Pillar (12) celebrates with teammates after driving in the winning run.

Jake Rogers had a two-run homer in the sixth inning and Reese Olson had a season-high nine strikeouts for Detroit, which has dropped five of six.

Rogers also had a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning as he had his second three-RBI game of the season.

The Angels had a pair of defensive gems in the final two innings. O’Hoppe made an off-balance throw and Guillorme made a leaping grab and tag at second base to get Riley Greene out on a stolen-base attempt in the ninth. Zach Neto made a nice play on a sharp grounder by Colt Keith to end the 10th.

Ben Joyce (1-0) retired the Tigers in order in the 10th.

Detroit got its first three runners aboard in the first but could only manage one run when Wenceel Pérez scored on Keith’s fielder’s choice.

The desperate hours: a pro baseball pitcher’s fentanyl overdose

When he didn’t reply to texts, the family of Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs went from worried to fearful.

The Angels took the lead with a pair in the third. Nolan Schanuel came home after Olson threw a wild pitch with the bases loaded and Willie Calhoun’s grounder drove in Luis Rengifo.

Detroit responded with two in the fourth. Keith scored on Zach McKinstry’s fielder’s choice and Rogers’ sacrifice fly brought home McKinstry.

Rogers extended the Tigers’ lead to 5-2 in the sixth with a two-run shot to left-center. At 443 feet, it was the longest homer of his career.

Up next: Angels left-hander Tyler Anderson (7-7), who is eighth in the majors with a 2.63 ERA, takes on Detroit right-hander Casey Mize (1-6, 4.54 ERA), who is 0-6 in his last 11 starts.

Their neighbor is a hoarder/mentally ill/drug addict who has made life very difficult for a street in Sunland and particularly one family. Next door was a 9 acre property owned by a retired school teacher and occupied by her troubled son, David Ferrera. At first he seemed friendly, but pretty soon his life fell apart and he and his equally troubled girlfriend were living in a car outside Malone's front gate. The property has no electricity or running water. There were stolen cars blocking the street, used condoms, trash bags of marijuana, anal plugs, human waste. The property itself is strewn with stolen cars (LAPD estimates 100 stolen vehicles on property) and unpassable to authorities. At one point Malone needed to pick her husband up from chemotherapy and couldn't get out of her gate. Her children cannot play outside. A judge earlier this year sentenced the elderly mother to jail - she was out in 11 hours - but said he couldn't do anything else and suggested Malone confront Karen Bass. The fire department had cleaned up the street somewhat, but the property itself is still a mess and a fire harzard (There have been several wildfires in this area.) First baseman Michael Busch generates plenty of offense. The 26-year-old is batting .262 with 10 dingers and 30 RBI. On Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies , Busch was 2-of-5 with a double.

Left fielder Ian Happ has an impressive combination of power and speed. Happ has a compact swing and will hit line drives all along the field. He also has good range in the outfield. 4 Angels who must be on trade block ahead of 2024 deadline

2024 is the Los Angeles Angels ’ first season with Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani. Expectations were low entering the year, and the club, as predicted, is among the worst in the American League.

The team is 34-46 — 10.5 games back in the AL West and 9.5 games out of the last Wild Card spot. LA owns the third-worst record in the AL. As the club struggles to gain traction , it looks like the Angels entered the MLB trade deadline as sellers again. Here are four Angels players who must be on the trade block ahead of the 2024 MLB trade deadline

Kevin Pillar (OF)

Kevin Pillar has played for an astounding nine teams since the start of the 2019 season. But that has not stopped the veteran outfielder from playing some of the best baseball of his career for the Angels this year. Pillar started the year on the Chicago White Sox, batting just .160 in 17 games for the struggling South Siders. The Sox released him, and the 35-year-old has found his stride on the West Coast.

Pillar is batting .316 in 114 at-bats with the Angels while posting a .924 OPS. Given his expected batting average of .254, Pillar’s hot streak is unlikely to continue. But the Angels should sell Kevin Pillar while he is hot to get an unexpected return for a player all 29 other clubs passed on.

Tyler Anderson (SP)

While Tyler Anderson was not an overlooked mid-season pickup, he is like Kevin Pillar in that he is playing well but drastically overperforming relative to his underlying numbers. The left-hander carries a 2.63 ERA through 16 starts this season, contrasting his 4.71 expected ERA and 4.77 FIP. Anderson also leads the league in walks and is striking out just 5.9 hitters per nine innings — easily a career-low. The 34-year-old also is also allowing just a .225 batting average on balls in play, third-best in MLB and yet another sign of incoming regression.

Tyler Anderson is a good pitcher, but not nearly as good as his ERA suggests. The Angels would be wise to maximize their return for Anderson while he still rides his hot streak.

Luis Rengifo (2B/3B/SS)

Is everyone playing well on the Angels riding an unsustainable hot streak? Luis Rengifo, a career .244 hitter coming into this season, is batting .312 with an expected batting of just .264 — nearly 50 points lower. Yet despite a 50-point increase in batting average from 2023 (.264) to 2024, Rengifo’s on-base percentage only went up 20 points (.339 to .359), and his OPS is just nine points higher (.783 to .792). A .351 BABIP is likely to decline soon, as is the versatile infielder’s lofty batting average.

Rengifo also continues to be one of the worst fielders in the league, costing the Angels six runs already with his glove in just 64 games. As with Pillar and Anderson, the Angels should capitalize on Luis Rengifo’s hot streak and trade the veteran infielder while he is overperforming.

Hunter Strickland (RP)

If not for 10 days earlier in June, when he allowed 12 runs in 4.1 innings pitched, Hunter Strickland would be a hot commodity among relievers at the trade deadline. Strickland had a 1.73 ERA entering this stretch before allowing three homers over his next six contests but has not allowed a baserunner in 3.2 innings since.

Opponents are batting just .179 against Strickland’s slider, and the 35-year-old has walked just eight batters in 34 innings. Hunter Strickland is an underrated gem who will provide solid relief innings for a contending team.

Wesneski blanks LA to guide Cubs to series victory

CHICAGO – The Cubs’ injury-marred rotation has a few returning arms on the horizon, but the ballclub needs steady hands in the meantime. On Sunday afternoon, Hayden Wesneski delivered for the North Siders.

Wesneski worked into the seventh and guided the Cubs to a 5-0 victory over the Angels at Wrigley Field, helping Chicago win the series against Los Angeles. That marked only the second series win for the Cubs in their past seven sets.

After allowing a single to Brandon Drury in the first inning, Wesneski held the Angels’ lineup to an 0-for-18 showing over the remainder of his outing. The right-hander’s 6 1/3 scoreless frames matched his career best for most innings with no runs allowed -- something he also achieved on May 3 against the Brewers.

Wesneski moved to the rotation from the Cubs’ bullpen in the wake of injuries to starters Jordan Wicks, Ben Brown and Javier Assad, who are all on the injured list. Assad could return as soon as the upcoming road trip, while Brown is on target for later this month. Wicks’ timeline is less clear, but he is currently rehabbing at the team’s site in Arizona.

Chicago’s offense backed Wesneski’s effort with three runs off Angels starter José Soriano. Miguel Amaya (RBI single) and Nico Hoerner (sac fly) came through in the third, and Michael Busch brought a run home on a double play in the fifth. Busch then belted a two-run homer off L.A. reliever Matt Moore in the seventh.

OAKLAND — The good feelings from the Angels’ six-game winning game streak are officially gone, eviscerated in three games against one of the few teams having a worse season.

The Angels lost to the Oakland A’s, 5-0, on Thursday afternoon, getting shut out for the second consecutive game and losing for the fourth straight game since their winning streak.

“Winning a baseball game is really tough,” Angels outfielder Kevin Pillar said. “You can feel on top of the world and invincible for a series or a few series or a week or a month, and you can feel completely lost the next day, the following day for a week or a month.”

While the Angels looked like they might be showing some signs of life last week – even if it was still too late for this season – they reverted to their disappointing form in Oakland.

The Angels (36-50) were held to four hits on Thursday, after being blanked in a 92-pitch complete game by Joey Estes on Wednesday night . It was the first time since June 2023 that the Angels were shut out in consecutive games.

Manager Ron Washington suggested the Angels were spent after the effort it took to win those six games in a row last week, and it has shown in their performance since.

“They looked tired,” Washington said. “It takes a lot out of you to win. It really does. And they haven’t understood that yet. What they did on that win streak is what they have to learn to bring every single day and they got to learn to do it. And they just looked tired. That’s all. The bats were heavy. The pitchers just couldn’t consistently put the ball in the strike zone. The guys you don’t expect to do things out there on the defensive side that’s not good for you, they were doing it. We just gotta turn the page and head on to Chicago.”

On Thursday, they could place some hope in the fact that they were facing left-hander JP Sears, and the Angels have been significantly better this season against lefties.

However, one of their best hitters against lefties has been Luis Rengifo, who was out of the lineup after hurting his wrist on Wednesday night .

“I really didn’t think that guy today was all that,” Washington said of Sears, “but he made pitches when he had to. And it seemed like when we put the ball in play with any authority, somebody was there catching it. They played tremendous defense. We got to find a way to start putting runs back on the board.”

The Angels had two hits in five innings against Sears. They loaded the bases in the third on a singe, a walk and a hit batter, but Taylor Ward flied out to strand the runners.

“We get the right guy up there,” Washington said. “That’s our RBI guy. Didn’t happen. So we’ve just got to regroup.”

In the sixth, the Angels had two on and two outs when Zach Neto was retired on a nice over-the-shoulder catch by first baseman Tyler Soderstrom in foul territory.

On the mound, Angels starter Roansy Contreras lasted only 2⅔ innings before he was knocked out, having allowed three runs.

Contreras has been a reliever all season, but the Angels are trying him out as a starter because injuries to Patrick Sandoval and Chase Silseth and the ineffectiveness of Reid Detmers have left them scrambling.

One of the runs Contreras allowed was unearned after Ward misplayed a single in left field. He allowed the ball to skip past him, which allowed Miguel Andujar to add an extra 90 feet to his single. Andujar ended up scoring on a sacrifice fly.

A passed ball by catcher Logan O’Hoppe added another unearned run against reliever Matt Moore in the sixth.

There were two defensive highlights, though.

Pillar made a spectacular catch to rob JJ Bleday of a homer in the first inning. Pillar, 35, leaped and got his glove a good three feet above the top of the center field fence as he pulled the ball down.

Pillar took a hit from Bleday when he dove forward to snag a line drive in the fourth inning.

Pillar narrowly missed another attempt on a Lawrence Butler homer in the ninth.

“I know I can still make plays like that,” Pillar said. “In order to showcase your ability, sometimes you need some opportunities to go out there and have some balls be put in play and allow you to run them down.”
