Charter bus benefits for schools.

Private charter bus rentals from Coach USA are the safe, reliable way to travel with a school group. College teams, theatre groups, school bands and other student groups can enjoy the many benefits of charter bus transportation. Or, plan a group college tour and prepare your students for the future.

Rent a Charter Bus for Your School Outing

The affordable and safe solution for any school trip.

When you're taking students, faculty and staff on a trip, there's an added level of concern and responsibility—you want to get everyone there and back with the least amount of hassle, and without unnecessary concerns about safety or accountability. Whether it's an athletic team competition, a prom or graduation after-party, a club or class excursion, or an arts or cultural offering, a charter bus lets you travel with comfort, convenience, safety and affordability.

Why a Charter Bus Makes Sense for Your School Trip

School Trips

There's no better option for a school outing than a charter bus rental from US Coachways:

  • It's the safest mode of group travel— With a charter bus, you'll have a highly trained professional at the wheel at all times. You won't have to worry about the driving skills of a number of parents or chaperones, and you won't have to worry about anyone getting lost. In addition, because of the limited access to the bus, you won't have unwanted guests—you and your students will be safe and secure.
  • You'll have unparalleled flexibility— There's no other mode of transportation that lets you decide when you'll leave, where you'll go, how long you'll stay and when you'll come back. If a game goes into overtime, you're covered—last-minute and real-time changes to your itinerary can often be accommodated. You can even book an entire trip with little advance notice.
  • You can count on a charter bus— You won't have to worry about getting there late and missing something. Delays and cancellations are virtually nonexistent with charter buses. Your driver has the resources to identify potential traffic problems and find alternate routes to get you there on time. Replacement vehicles are often quickly available, thanks to our extensive network of charter bus service providers nationwide.
  • You can relax— With most group trips, someone has to watch the GPS or keep an eye on the clock. Someone has to battle traffic, look for a parking space or get behind the wheel when the game's over. On a charter bus, your driver will handle all those details. You won't have to worry about missed connections or lost luggage. You'll be on the same coach for the entire trip and your gear will travel with you. You won't have to stand in a TSA security line, take off your shoes or empty your pockets. You can leave your phone on all the time—it won't interfere with navigational systems.
  • You can ride in comfort— If you travel on a mini-bus or full-sized charter bus, you'll have plush and spacious seats with plenty of leg room. You'll also enjoy wide aisles and the ability to move freely about the cabin.
  • You can use the bus for more than just travel— Use your travel time to prepare students, talk strategy, give last minute instructions or break the ice.
  • You can take advantage of the HOV (high occupancy vehicle) lanes— That helps you minimize time stuck in traffic.
  • Charter buses are a cost-effective way to travel— When you ride together, you share many of the costs of transportation. That routinely makes charter bus travel one of the most affordable options.
  • You'll help the environment— When you travel together on a charter bus, you reduce the number of private vehicles on the roads. That lowers emissions and helps the planet.

Frequently Asked Questions about Bus Rentals for School Trips

  • What is the best vehicle for our group?
  • That depends on a number of factors. At US Coachways, we'll look at the details of your trip—how many students and staff will be traveling, how long you'll be on the road, what you'll be bringing with you, and whether your participants have any special needs. Then we'll work with our nationwide network of vendors to find the ideal coach for your outing. If you're traveling with a small-to-mid-sized group, the mini-bus is a great option, with seating for 24 to 35. For larger groups, the full-sized bus accommodates up to 57 passengers. School buses are also available for rent, if you're looking for a more streamlined and affordable option. We'll also make certain there's ample room for anything you need to bring, from band instruments to sports equipment. Multiple bus rentals are always an option.
  • Will US Coachways provide SPAB or 19A-certified drivers?
  • Yes. US Coachways has relationships with vendors who carry School Pupil Activities Bus (SPAB) and Article 19-A certifications and will always ensure that the driver has all appropriate state driving qualifications.
  • Are seat belts required for school buses or travel?
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requires three point seat belts on all school buses weighing less than 10,000 pounds. Seat belt use for larger buses is regulated on a state-by-state basis. US Coachways will always follow all relevant laws governing the use of seat belts.
  • Who handles payment? Will US Coachways accept a purchase order?
  • Work directly with your booking agent to confirm who will take your payment and how it will be made. As a general rule, US Coachways takes purchase orders. Cash, checks and credit cards are also accepted.
  • How much will it cost to rent a charter bus for our school trip?
  • The total cost of a charter bus rental varies, based on a number of criteria:
  • How many people will be traveling—This dictates the size of your bus. As a general rule, the larger the bus, the greater the cost.
  • The amenities you'll need—Most charter buses come with certain standard features, including Wifi, DVD players, stereo and PA systems and charging stations for your devices. The school buses, however, typically don't have these options and are less expensive. For additional amenities, such as an on-board bathroom, you'll typically pay a bit more.
  • When and where you are traveling—The cost of a charter bus is typically more in the winter months in Florida than the summer months (there's greater demand). The opposite generally holds true in Northern climates. You will also typically pay more for a charter bus on Friday, Saturday and Sunday than other days of the week.
  • How long you will be gone—For day trips, you'll either pay by the mile or by the hour (expect a minimum charge—usually five hours). For day trips, the most common way to bill is by the day. If you stay anywhere overnight, you can expect to pay the cost of lodging for your driver.
  • Whether there are any tolls, parking fees, permit charges or other expenses—You will be responsible for all such costs.
  • To get a better idea of the potential cost, use our online Cost Calculator .

Improved Field Trip Experiences

Avoid traveling in a traditional school bus for your next field trip, and focus instead on renting a charter bus for a climate-controlled and comfortable journey. A charter bus rental will allow you to add amenities such as cushy reclining seats for quick naps, free WiFi for on-the-go assignments, flat screen TVs and AV entertainment for educational videos, PA systems for announcements or headcounts, restrooms for quick access, and more. The journey will be less excruciating and more exciting with your students, staff, and mentors onboard.

Easy Off-site Faculty Meetings

GOGO Charters is happy to provide off-campus bus transportation in the event your staff wants to get away from the usual meeting rooms. By renting a charter bus, you’ll ensure that everyone sticks together and arrives on time without being held up by traffic or other unforeseen circumstances. It’s also important to note that mingling on a charter bus is a great way to break the ice before the meeting starts!

Streamline Transportation to Greek Events

If you’re part of a fraternity or sorority that arranges parties or off-campus events from time to time, it’s essential to book a bus rental to ensure that all members travel together and arrive at the event promptly before the general public. You can even utilize the luggage bins on your bus rental for party supplies, food, and drinks so that multiple trips aren’t required to transport these goods. On the occasion that there’s alcohol served at these events, instead of looking for a designated driver, you can rely on your charter bus driver to get your members safely back to campus.

Tour Colleges On Your Own Time

Our far-reaching transportation network allows us to provide bus rentals to any college campus in the United States, including cities like New York City , Los Angeles , Atlanta , or Washington DC . Instead of relying on unpredictable public transportation, your group will be able to visit any metropolitan college campus or small college town in the United States with GOGO Charters. Your driver will make sure to drop you off right where the tour begins so you can focus on enjoying your time on campus.

Travel Off-campus for Research Gatherings

Conducting an important research study with your classmates? Instead of traveling in individual cars to the archaeological site, forest, lake, or laboratory, opt for a bus rental instead to keep everyone in one place, under one roof. If your study involves traveling with extensive equipment, books, and papers, you can utilize the luggage cabins onboard for safe keeping. The free WiFi on the bus will also prove to be helpful when you need access to the internet for last-minute research needs or to take group selfies to commemorate the occasion!

Organize Transportation for Marches, Protests and Non-profit Events

GOGO Charters is proud to provide transportation to historical marches and events that rally for important causes. If your school or university is participating in events such as Pride, Womens March, or Black Lives Matter (to name a few), we can pair you with the appropriate charter bus rental for the occasion. Since traffic and overcrowding is usually an issue during these events, traveling in a bus rental is the best way to get to your destination on time without hunting for multiple parking spots for your group. In addition, you can store all your march merchandise (poster boards, flags, banners etc.) on your bus rental or use the compact restroom to freshen up your appearance after a day of passionate activism.

Sports Travel for Schools and Colleges

Have an upcoming sporting event at your school or university? Streamline travel to all away games, intramural sports or physically intensive competitions with a bus rental from GOGO Charters. All athletes will be able to kick back and relax in the climate-controlled bus cabins or can listen to game-day music or anthems over the loudspeakers in the bus rental. The large luggage bins will also provide enough space to store sports equipment, duffle bags and coolers for the game. Moreover, traveling in a bus will ensure a memorable bonding experience for your team without sacrificing on space and comfort.

Travel Anywhere with GOGO Charters

Since we provide 24/7 private bus transportation to over 300 cities nationwide , there are endless opportunities for you to arrange educational trips with GOGO Charters. Whether your plans take you to career fairs, spelling bees, chess club tournaments or even proms, we have the right bus rental for any occasion . A charter bus rental will have the comfort and convenience covered! Everyone can cool off in a climate-controlled cabin while coming back from  a hot day at the San Diego Zoo, catch up on work with power outlets and WiFi while stuck in Atlanta traffic, or relax in reclining seats while shuttling between Miami and Orlando for Grad Bash.

Easy Booking for Field Trips of All Sizes

Whether you’re taking one class or scout troop on a field day or you’re planning a trip for your entire senior graduating class, Shofur can accommodate your event. Our network includes spacious charter buses that can fit up to 56 passengers for large events and compact minibuses for smaller groups. Even if you need several buses for your big school trip, your Shofur rental expert can help you build the perfect fleet for your students.

Simplified University Trips and College Tours

Our services aren’t just limited to primary and secondary schools! We have transportation solutions for prospective and current college students too. Renting a minibus is the easiest way for clubs and organizations to travel around campus or even to off-campus occasions like Greek life formals, volunteer events, and football games. If you’re organizing a trip for your high school seniors or community college students to tour local campuses, book a charter bus with Shofur to simplify any parking hassles (they’re inevitable on big campuses).

Book Your Shofur Charter Bus Today

Educators and chaperones can focus on lesson plans and other field trip organization while Shofur handles the transportation. Our team is here around the clock at 1-800-436-8719 to help you rent a charter bus for your educational outing.

Field Trip Charter Buses

School field trips – getting there is half the fun.

Village Travel is the company to call when it’s time for your next school field trip. Whether your school group is traveling across the state, or across the country, our quality charter buses will give your students a safe comfortable ride.

We understand one of the most important factors when choosing a bus company is the price. In fact, it may be the primary factor. Village drives hundreds of school field trips per year so we know how to get you there safely at a competitive price.

Nationwide Field Trip Charter Bus Travel

Village Travel provides field trip charter buses for schools all over the U.S. We can transport your class to popular destinations across town or across the country. Our field trip charter bus service is frequently used by schools in these states:

Why Choose Village Travel?

  • Village Travel is one of the only companies in the area that provides twice what our liability insurance requires. We carry 10 million dollars in coverage for the unlikely event of an accident.
  • All drivers are required to pass an extensive background check.
  • All drivers are properly trained in safety and customer service.
  • Drivers attend safety classes every other month put on by our own Safety Director.
  • All buses go through a 116-point safety and roadworthiness inspection every five thousand miles (about once a month).
  • We offer  deluxe coaches which have 110-volt outlets and Wi-Fi, and standard coaches (minus outlets and Wi-Fi).
  • With either bus, rest assured you are traveling on safe, comfortable, and immaculately-maintained equipment.
  • We service and maintain our own vehicles which means even the smallest issue gets taken care of immediately.

What To Know When You Compare Field Trip Charter Bus Quotes

  • Make sure all companies quote your trip with the same miles. If you call to get a quote for your event but do not have an itinerary, we may add additional miles to get you back and forth to lunch or other locations we don’t know about yet. Because we charge by the day or the mile, whichever is greater, this sometimes increases the price. If we have an itinerary to quote from, we do not add miles beyond what you requested. However, sometimes our competitors will quote the price with no extra miles knowing they will be cheaper in the beginning even though they will charge you the extra miles once you return. Always make sure you are comparing “apples to apples.”
  • Come look at the bus. We urge our customers to come by and take a look at the exact bus they will be traveling on. Be sure to do this regardless of what company you choose. If a company tells you a specific bus is on the road and they can’t give you a date when it will be back, be concerned. Looking at the bus before your trip is an acceptable request. We welcome visitors at any time. Also, if you do visit before your trip, make note of the plate number on the bus to assure you get the same one.
  • Do you need Wi-Fi or 110-volt plugins? If so, make sure all companies provide these amenities when you book your charter.
  • Driver hotel nights. If the trip will be overnight, ask charter companies to note whether the price includes/excludes the driver’s nightly hotel fee. This is often a big reason for a price difference.
  • Built-in gratuity? Village does not add in a gratuity for the driver, but some companies do. If you’d like to tip our hardworking drivers, you are welcome to but it is certainly not required (or expected) for school field trips.
  • Pay before you go? Does the bus company require you to pay upfront? For most schools, Village allows you to pay after returning from your trip.
  • Cancellation policy. Cancellation policies vary from company to company. Always ask so you know what to expect in the case of an unexpected delay or cancellation.
  • Fleet size. Village offers buses to comfortably accommodate parties as small as 27 and as large as 56. Whether you need one small motorcoach, or several large buses, we have you covered with a large fleet of over 100. Planning a field trip? Take a look at our fleet and call us today (800) 333-0312.

Guide to Renting a Charter Bus for School Field Trips

Sending kids on a field trip is something that most teachers do regularly in school. Field trips serve to build team spirit, strengthen teacher-student connections, and make classes more enjoyable. It is critical to plan everything ahead of time and select an appropriate mode of school trip transportation.

1

Student bus rentals are a great way to keep your entire group together in one vehicle, boosting school spirit and encouraging budding friendships. When renting a school bus for a field trip, the primary considerations are comfort, ease of travel, and, most importantly, the protection of children. Hiring a charter bus for a field trip is a fantastic option, and here’s a quick rundown of things to consider.

Types of Bus

Here are the most commonly rented types of buses for school trips:

Coach Bus The coach bus, often known as a “motor coach,” provides a variety of modern and, sometimes luxurious, features not seen in other bus rental alternatives. These amenities include air conditioning, power and AUX plugs, and high-speed WIFI. The coach bus has seating for up to 55 people and is ideal for transporting large groups of people over long distances. This is especially useful for student trips lasting more than 3 hours since they can use the extra hour or two on the journey to study or simply relax and watch a movie.

Minibus Minibus rentals are suitable for smaller student groups travelling short distances or making frequent stops. The minibus is a very small vehicle that is built for efficiency and fuel economy. This vehicle, which has a configuration similar to that of a full-size school bus, can accommodate up to 21 people at a time. Due to their tiny size, minibus rentals are good for traversing congested cities, making them an excellent choice for sightseeing excursions.

School Bus The school bus is a traditional rental choice for student groups of various sizes, from K-12 to college students. This vehicle has a capacity of 47 passengers and is ideal for short trips. The school bus is the most basic of bus types, having only the absolute minimum of features to securely and reliably transport your group from point A to point B. School bus rentals are meant to keep expenses low, providing a cost-effective choice for all of your student group’s outings.

Benefits of Renting School Bus

Modern buses are equipped with comfortable seats and features

Even the most seasoned teachers find dealing with a large group of children outside of a closed school atmosphere difficult. If your pupils are becoming concerned as a result of the ride’s inconvenience, the turmoil is going to explode.

Hiring modern coach buses for school trips eliminates this issue. You get soft and comfy seats, plenty of room for everyone, and exciting and lovely views out the windows. Almost every modern charter bus now includes a range of amenities. The most vital is a built-in toilet. Motion sickness is aggravating for anybody, but it’s especially so for children. If your bus has a toilet, you won’t need to make an emergency stop.

Trustworthy When it comes to transportation, there are a lot of unpleasant circumstances that might cause you to miss your flight or even spoil your entire trip. The safety of children is, of course, the most important consideration. When planning field excursions, always use a professional bus company to reduce the danger of any kind of mishap.

Charter bus drivers are trained professionals, ensuring the safety and overall quality of the bus ride. Drivers arrive on the job well-prepared, with a thorough understanding of the route they will drive and the present road situation.

Clean and Hygienic One child can make a mess, and a full class can make a disaster. This is why professional charter bus operators clean and disinfect their buses regularly to ensure that there is no risk to the passengers’ health, particularly children.

With COVID-19 tightened cleaning rules, bus companies for school field trips go above and beyond in cleaning their vehicles, so you can rest assured that the bus you’re about to board is spotless and safe for your children.

Enjoyable Having a charter bus for a school trip just adds to the relaxed atmosphere and pleasant times with your peers during a school field trip. There’s plenty of time for youngsters to have a good time on the journey there and back. The trip will be remembered for its smooth ride and spectacular scenery.

Tips for Renting a School Bus Service

2

Charter buses for school trips can make your journey a little easier, whether you’re travelling with a school group or a summer camp. Here’s a list of useful tips to bear in mind when renting a school bus:

Look into your bus options A school bus is a common and convenient mode of transportation for children, and it can be effective for short travels. Long-distance journeys or outings with hours of traffic can rapidly become uncomfortable. Consider renting a modern coach to keep the kids entertained and comfortable.

The size of your party will usually determine which type of charter bus is suitable for your group of children. Minibuses have fewer storage possibilities and do not have onboard facilities, so keep that in mind while choosing your bus model. If you’re travelling long distances and have little children who might require a potty break in the middle of the journey, a full-size charter bus might be a better option.

Think about safety and mobility requirements While school buses are a safe and reliable mode of transportation, charter buses may provide both comfort and safety. Some charter bus models, like school buses, do not have seat belts. However, if you’re travelling with children and safety belts are a must-have item, let your reservation specialist know when making your reservation. Accessible transportation for persons with disabilities regulations can also be reserved to safely assist guests who are unable to transfer from mobility equipment.

Request amenities Charter bus rentals can have several features that make travelling with children less stressful. To keep kids occupied and prevent the dreaded “we’re bored!” exclamations, you can select entertainment alternatives like WiFi and TVs with DVD players. To occupy young children, play a movie or allow older children to stream their favourite media on their mobile devices.

Inquire about your driver

A professional driver is necessary for a safe field trip

If you have a large and rowdy group, you may want to choose a driver who has expertise in driving around kids. It’s best if you can find a driver who has special certificates or permissions required by your local government or school board, has passed a comprehensive background check, and has passed a drug test.

Consider your travel dates and locations The availability of charter buses varies based on when and where you want to travel. The busiest seasons for parties travelling with children are spring and summer, which can cause charter bus availability to decline and rates to climb. During these busy seasons, you’ll want to stay on top of securing school field trip transportation. To ensure that you get the best sort of bus for your field trip, start the booking procedure at least 6 months ahead of time.

Plan ahead of time for payment Although regular credit card payment is straightforward, reserving bus services may occasionally require purchase orders, contracts, or other documentation. Make sure to inform your reservation agent of alternative payment methods. Because processing these payments might take some time, plan your field trip or kid-friendly event as far ahead as possible.

Everything Teachers Need to Know for School Field Trip Bus Rides

School Field Trip Bus Ride Tips

Fifteen years; that is how long I have been taking kids from Kindergarteners to Seniors on bus rides to field trips. From summer day camps to outdoor school, I’ve done it all. The school I currently work at goes on 30 field trips every year. Six of those field trips are overnight trips with an entire class of students. Over the years, I have learned a thing or two about how to keep my sanity and students happy on the bus. Read on if you want to survive and maybe even be excited about your next ride on the big yellow bus.

field trip in bus

Make Sure You Have Basic Necessities

Generally speaking, you need to have field trip permission slips for each student and file trip chaperone attending your adventure. Chaperones also need to be registered volunteers with the district with fingerprint checks. Some districts require more or less paperwork so double check what is needed and ensure you have everything. I usually bring a one inch binder to hold all permission slips, contact information in case of emergency, and medical information if applicable. I love this, “Do More of What Makes You Happy” one because it always makes me smile. I also bring a basic first aid kit ( I rock a fanny pack but you can get a basic one for your backpack HERE .)

Talk to the Driver About Expectations

Right when you get to the bus, greet the driver and introduce yourself. Having a good relationship with bus drivers is important and some teachers seem to forget this. Ask about expectations for students so you can help with proper discipline. Also ask if the driver needs directions and if they have been to your destination before. If the driver does not seem confident, it may be a good idea to sit in the first seat to help with navigation. Some drivers allow food and drinks other than water and some do not. To have a successful school field trip, this communication step should not be skipped. Drivers also can offer field trip ideas and suggestions for future educational field trips nearby. It is important to be a united front when transporting students to reduce madness so have these conversations right away.

Set Clear Bus Rules Before Leaving the Parking Lot

This is especially important when we take bright eyed and bushy tailed sixth graders on their first overnight field trip. They don’t know expectations so clear and concise directions are mandatory before the bus even leaves the parking lot. Click HERE for a full list of tasks as we enter the bus.

  • Make sure everyone has their stuff needed
  • Ask if everyone has gone to the bathroom (including teachers) .
  • Remind them about expectations with noise level.
  • Tell students where to put and where not to put their body.
  • Talk about food and drinks as well as a trash policy .
  • Let everyone know how long the ride will be.
Teacher Checklist For Field Trip Bus Rides (Do This Before Leaving The School Parking Lot!)

Sit Next To Humans You Enjoy

Now, I know there can be requirements about where Teachers sit. Sometimes you have to have one chaperone in the back, one in the front, one at emergency exits and so on. However, if you get on the bus first out of all your colleagues, you can do a quick scan and see where the best spot to sit is. Better yet, seat the students yourself! While seating them, do a look around for what students (or chaperones) you would want to sit next to for the duration of the trip and just say something like, “This is going to be my seat, please make sure no one sits there.” In teaching, I know we don’t have favorite (or least favorite) students or co workers, but if we did…you know where to sit.

School Field trip tips

Bring Something To Do

You probably can’t put headphones on and drown out the sounds of students or take a nap, but you can probably bring something to do on the bus to maintain sanity. You can go for the obvious thing, information to read about your destination or something more personal like a book or knitting. Adult activity books with word searches, puzzles, and whatnot are a fun option. I like THIS ONE . If you want to be popular with the people around you, bring this Games on the Go activity and game book . It is small and easily portable with great ideas for young and older students alike.

Sit Back, Relax, and Focus on Gratitude

Field trips are supposed to be fun. Remember that. You are getting paid to not be at your school so enjoy it! Think of the fun places you are going and what you are most excited about. Better yet, talk with the students about what they are excited about. This is your chance to build relationships with them outside the classroom. All kids need positive adult relationships. Take a breath and try to be grateful for this opportunity because it doesn’t happen everyday!

If you follow these simple steps, your next bus trip should be more successful and less stressful. For more school field trip tips and hacks to stay sane, follow me on social media and subscribe to this blog!

  • DebbJ 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Great way to get oriented to Moscow We started our Moscow experience with the hop on hop off. It was a great way to get orientated to the city. The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

Parents furious after 13 students left behind by school bus after field trip to Youth Fair

NORTHWEST MIAMI-DADE, FLA. (WSVN) - Several parents are furious after, they said, their children were forgotten at the Youth Fair while on a field trip . In total, 13 students were left behind.

“I was so scared,” Jahkeam Moore said. “My teacher was gone,” he said.

Six-year-old Jahkeam was safe and sound Thursday morning, one day after he was forgotten on that field trip.

His kindergarten class from Charles R. Drew K-8 Center in Northwest Miami-Dade on Wednesday made their way to the fair on the bus for some food and fun.

Jahkeam’s godmother, however, told 7News that 13 students were also left at the fair when the school bus initially took off.

“The school bus did turn around and pick up eight of them,” she said. ” A parent did leave with two, and then my godson and two others in the vehicle with this one parent.”

A bus returned to pick up eight kids, but five other students found their own way back to the school.

“There’s many red flags with this, and it’s totally unacceptable,” said the godmother.

The parent who drove Jahkeam back to campus told 7News that she was not an approved chaperone for the trip, and she simply went to the fair on her own account to watch her son, who was also on the field trip.

She said, at some point, the teacher left Jahkeam with her.

Latasha Jones, Jahkeam’s mother, said she wants answers on how the bus left her child behind.

“I want to know how did my child get left at the fair,” said Jones. “When I signed that field trip form, he was supposed to stay with his teacher, not go off with a parent that’s not even a chaperone on a field trip. I’m still angry.”

Jahkeam’s godmother told 7News that Jahkeam was up at 4 a.m. thinking about the incident. She also said that there were red flags regarding the situation, and several unanswered questions remain.

“He just embraced me, he told me and said how scared and afraid he was because, even though he knows the parent’s son, he did not know the parent at all. That was his first time,” said Jahkeam’s godmother.

She now wants those responsible for leaving her godson and those 12 other students to he held accountable.

“Just from one parent to another, I just think the proper protocol was not done when it comes to doing head counts, when it comes to ensuring that every child is on the bus,” she said. “They basically just told the bus driver, you know, gave the clear, the OK, and they left.”

The school district released a statement following the incident.

“Miami-Dade County Public Schools is deeply concerned to learn that several students from Charles R. Drew K-8 Center returned to their school from a field trip with a parent instead of their assigned bus. We are looking into the matter and will take appropriate action.” MDCPS

For now, Jahkeam’s family is happy that he is OK, but his mother wants to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“This is very frustrating because what if my son never made it back to me. Then, what answers would they have for me?” said Jones.

As of Thursday afternoon, no action has been taken by the school district related to the field trip.

School, field trip company respond after bus driver arrested while transporting 50 students to Wauconda school

T he school district and a field trip company have issued statements after an unlicensed bus driver was arrested when police stopped the bus as it was traveling to a Wauconda school with 50 children onboard.

A Lake County sheriff’s deputy was on patrol around 12:05 a.m. Thursday in the area of northbound Route 12 near Valentine Court in North Barrington.

The deputy observed a 2005 MCI transit bus commit an improper lane usage violation, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Ari Briskman.

The sheriff’s deputy learned the registration plates were expired after checking the vehicle’s registration.

It was also learned the bus had not been issued an Interstate Fuel Tax Act sticker, which is required for a commercial motor vehicle, Briskman said.

The sheriff’s deputy conducted a traffic stop and learned the driver, Santos Popoca-Mendez, 44, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, did not have a valid commercial driver’s license.

He also did not even have a regular driver’s license, Briskman said.

The sheriff’s deputy found there were approximately 50 juveniles onboard the bus, which was traveling from O’Hare International Airport to Wauconda Middle School.

The children were on their way back from a field trip to Washington D.C.

Popoca-Mendez was placed under arrest for driving without a valid driver’s license.

Briskman said an employee of a local towing agency who has the necessary commercial driver’s license drove the bus from the traffic stop location to Wauconda Middle School without incident.

The children were then released to their guardians.

The sheriff’s deputy who initiated the traffic stop is a commercial motor vehicle enforcement officer and he weighed the bus at Wauconda Middle School using portable scales, Briskman said.

The bus was found to be overweight for its registration.

Sheriff’s deputies spoke with the owner of the bus company, M & M Tours, LLC in Milwaukee, regarding the incident.

Popoca-Mendez was transported to the Lake County Jail and charged with driving without a valid commercial driver’s license, improper lane usage, driving without an Interstate Fuel Tax Act sticker and overweight on registration.

Popca-Mendez was released with a notice to appear in court on May 20.

Briskman said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are possible.

District 118 administration said in a message to parents that the driver arrested was not a District 118 employee and was contracted by School Tours of America.

“While this was not a District 118 school-sponsored event, the safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. District 118 is disappointed in the lack of oversight by the contracted companies and will be investigating further what we can do under our control to ensure that an incident such as this never happens again,” the administration said.

Wauconda Middle School teacher Amy Robb said in a separate message to parents that the incident was “unique and out of our hands.”

Robb said the children were safe at all times throughout the trip and on the bus.

“They were with 5 MAMA BEAR chaperones. We were extremely vigilant and had their safety first and foremost in our minds,” Robb said.

Robb also said they “do not have answers to some of the questions that have been asked” and “may never get some of those answered.”

“In the end, please know that your children were safe, and we hope that they had experiences that one day they will look back on and laugh about, remember, and even tell their children,” she added.

After Lake and McHenry County Scanner first published a story on the incident , School Tours of America sent a message to parents of children who were on the bus.

The company called Lake and McHenry County Scanner’s report “unofficial information” and an “unofficial source,” saying that unofficial sources “may not always have accurate details” despite the information being sourced directly from the sheriff’s office.

School Tours of America said they spoke with the sheriff’s office and the sheriff’s office has not provided them with any information yet.

The company said they have ceased operations with Olson Transportation due to the incident.

Olson was the company they contracted to charter the students from the airport to school.

Olson subcontracted with M&M Tours without informing School Tours of America, the company said.

“The safety of our travelers is our number one priority, and we will not allow the safety of our students to be compromised. Unfortunately, the information we have is limited until our investigation is completed,” School Tours of America said.

Parents demand answers after kids left at Miami-Dade Fair during field trip

Kindergarteners and first graders from charles r. drew k- 8 center left on a bus that morning to the fair, but at least three parents told nbc6 their child was not on the bus when it came back to school, by niko clemmons • published april 3, 2024 • updated on april 4, 2024 at 11:14 am.

Frustrated parents are demanding answers after they say their children went on a field trip to the Miami-Dade County Fair on Tuesday and were then left behind.

Kindergarteners and first graders from Charles R. Drew K- 8 Center took a bus that morning to the fair, but at least three parents told NBC6 their child was not on the bus when it came back to school.

Latasha Jones said her son never made it back on the bus, and she found out because another parent called her.

“The school didn’t even contact me to let me know that my child was left at the fair,” Jones said. “I’m angry, I’m still angry.”

When Jones got to the school, she said no one could tell her what happened.

“The principal basically didn’t give me no answers, just, 'we're going to deal with it.' No, I want answers,” Jones said.

Her 6-year-old son Jahkeam Moore said he was also confused.

“I was nervous. Why were they gone?" Moore said.

The parent who called Jones said her child was also left at the fair.

"I was angry because you left not only my child, and you left small kids, and being that it's so many kids coming up missing, that was scary," said the parent, who didn't want to be shown on camera.

The parent said she was at the fair not as a chaperone, but to watch her child. She said a teacher handed Jones' child off to her. The mom said she ended up driving four children back to the school, including her son and Jones' son.

“I want them to be removed from the school," she said. "You left babies, they're 5 years old, had I not been there, they would have been left wandering around the park, anything could have happened to them."

Miami-Dade County Public Schools confirmed students were left at the fair and are working on finding out more information.

“Miami-Dade County Public Schools is deeply concerned to learn that several students from Charles R. Drew K-8 Center returned to their school from a field trip with a parent instead of their assigned bus," a spokesperson said in a statement Wednesday. "We are looking into the matter and will take appropriate action."

Officials with the fair also released a statement on the incident.

"The Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition conducts an extensive sweep at the end of every field trip and at the end of every night, to ensure that no child or guest is left behind on the premises. No students were reported missing to either the fair or MDPD during or following today's field trip," the statement read.

Jones and several other parents said they want the school held accountable.

“I can't lose my child because of their negligence, it's unacceptable,” Jones said. “You didn’t even know who you left my child with, you just handed him off to be someone else's responsibility. When I signed that field trip form, he was supposed to stay with his teacher.”

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

Moscow itinerary

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

Never been to Moscow or Russia but my family has. Many great spots and a lot of culture. Your itinerary sounds fantastic and covers a lot despite it is only a short period of time.

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Dash camera video released Thursday by a Texas school district shows the moment a cement truck veered into oncoming traffic, hitting a school bus carrying more than 40 pre-K students returning from a zoo field trip.

The deadly collision on March 22 sends the bus rolling over on a rural highway outside Austin. The video released by the Hays Consolidated Independent School District shows papers from the bus strewn across the road and other drivers leaving their cars to race toward the bus.

A 5-year-old boy aboard the bus and a driver in another vehicle were killed. Others aboard the bus were airlifted to hospitals or transported by ambulances.

Eleven adults were also aboard the bus.

The crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not said how fast the vehicles were traveling.

How Beyond Xbox: Field Trips is Teaching Valuable Life Skills via Game Pass Favorites

Xbox has teamed up with Ukie’s Digital Schoolhouse to launch Beyond Xbox: Field Trips, a series of interactive learning experiences, available on Spotify , to help young people learn through play.

These experiences are set to be delivered as a series of podcasts, featuring seven Xbox Game Pass titles. Each audio journey will focus on a specific game, and the skills that are encouraged and honed while playing. The Field Trips aim to help young people sharpen thought processes, learn collaborative skills, and experience a sense of accomplishment in an immersive environment.

Xbox Wire had the opportunity to sit down with Ollie Bray, co-author of the European Games in Schools Handbook, who helped shape this project. With Bray, we found out how this the podcasts came to be, and what makes Xbox’s catalogue the perfect selection for skills-based learning.

Grounded Super Duper Update Hero Image

Bray has a background in teaching, and, like many academics, found himself frustrated by more traditional methods to get young people involved with classroom activities. The original thought process of how games can assist with this hurdle came from Sim City , which encourages its players to think about urban planning in an interesting way.

“The traditional ways that we do things are often really dull, but games and simulations offer personalised learning experiences,” Bray says. “When we’re thinking about ‘soft skills’, these game environments are a really good example of how to develop those.”

Beyond Xbox: Field Trips has a couple of main goals in mind, according to Bray. One is to showcase video games as tools that can generate powerful learning opportunities.

The other is to demonstrate how games do not have to have been made specifically for educational purposes to have educational benefits.

We had the chance to listen to the Sea of Thieves episode of Beyond Xbox: Field Trips ahead of its release, which focuses on encouraging teamwork and delegation – something that is already integral to Sea of Thieves ’ gameplay.

“There are aspects of the game where young people are picking up maps, which links to geography, how we learn about latitude and longitude, compass directions, map orientation, all sorts of skills,” Bray says.

“It’s the kind of hard learning you’d expect to get in a geography classroom, which is often reinforced by a textbook or video, but in this case, we’re reinforcing it through interactive gameplay, which gives young people motivation.”

On the campaign, Shahneila Saeed, Director of Digital Schoolhouse and Head of Education at Ukie added, “we’re very excited to be supporting such an original and unique program, using games to develop the skills of young people. I can’t wait to see how these audio learning journeys are implemented in our Digital Schoolhouse network over the coming months, and the impact that they will have.”

Sea of Thieves Season Eight

Each audio learning journey is available on Spotify , and prompts players to take part in a number of in-game tasks in order to develop important soft skills. All seven games are available via Xbox Game Pass , and can be seen below alongside the skills they encourage:

  • Grounded – Problem Solving & Analytical Thinking
  • Sea of Thieves – Teamwork and Delegation
  • Minecraft – Creativity and Innovation
  • Microsoft Flight Simulator – Focus and Diligence
  • PowerWash Simulator – Motivation and Prioritisation
  • Age of Empires IV – Strategy and Decision making
  • Cities: Skylines – Planning and Adaptability

Choosing Game Pass titles was another important element of Beyond Xbox: Field Trips. Bray shares that all of these games can be accessed with just one Game Pass membership.

“We wanted to include a number of different genres of game to be able to cater for different interests,” Bray explains. “You’ll find your classic sandbox game in there, Minecraft ; survival elements from Grounded ; and more surprising titles such as Powerwash Simulator , which is a difficult game to explain, but is hugely therapeutic to play.”

A final note that Bray touches on is how play is highly encouraged during early development, and again later in adult life, but there’s a middle point where leaning on resources like video games is underutilized. Bray adds, “this makes me wonder if we can rethink the approach to the middle part a little – games are a highly engaging learning environment.”

Beyond Xbox: Field Trips are now available via Spotify for players in the UK and Mexico. They can also be accessed as in more accessible formats as visual guides on Xbox.com to cater to different learning styles.
