The Pink Lagoon in Torrevieja (Alicante, Valencian Community)

Alicante - Alacant

Region of Valencia

Torrevieja is a tourist town whose life revolves around the sea and the production of salt. Its two huge salt mines, La Mata y Torrevieja, are surrounded by modern housing estates.

Connected with each other, the salt mines were declared a Nature Reserve; they reach the sea through La Mata. Salt mining in this region goes back to the beginning of Christianity, though it reached its peak during the 19th century. Nowadays, Torrevieja's salt is exported to the whole world, and the annual production exceeds a million tons. In Torrevieja, seafaring tradition is kept alive by the significant activity of the fishing and trading port, the numerous piers at the Royal Sailing Club, and the International Marina. Towards the end of the promenade we find the wharfs from which ships, loaded with salt, would leave for Cuba. These vessels would bring, on their way back, the popular songs known as "habaneras", which still entertain the popular Coral Competition celebrated every year during the summer.

15 Best Things to Do in Torrevieja (Spain)

The Costa Blanca resort of Torrevieja is a dream if you like sun, sea and lots of sand.  Five of Torrevieja’s beaches were awarded the Blue Flag in 2016, ranging from cute urban bays buzzing with activity in the summer, to wide open beaches where you can find seclusion even in July.  The resort is pinned to the coast by two great salt lagoons that are protected by natural parks.

There’s also a great infrastructure at Torrevieja so you won’t be scratching your head for things to do and children will never be left out: There are waterparks and water sports centres, all kinds of restaurants and bars, as well as a long list of cities close by to discover on day trips.

Let’s explore the best things to do in Torrevieja :

1. La Mata Beach

La Mata Beach, Torrevieja

If your idea of the perfect beach is a wide and spacious belt of pale sand washed by rolling surf then La Mata is the one for you.

It’s a Blue Flag beach hugged by a boardwalk that runs for its entire 2.3 kilometres and has some 14 beach bars.

As you make your way north you’ll find that the beach gets even quieter, and there’s a 14th-century watchtower at the northern limit, which served as part of a series of defences when coastal Spain was vulnerable to pirate attacks.

2. Las Salinas de Torrevieja

Las Salinas de Torrevieja

A large swathe of Torrevieja’s hinterland is a natural park with two vast salt lagoons.

To the south is the Laguna de Torrevieja, which has a pink tint and continues to be mined for its salt.

Many people come to float in these waters on the resort side of the lagoon; just don’t forget to bring some water to wash the salt off! Further up is Laguna de la Mata, behind La Mata Beach, and this is where you can pop into the interpretation centre surrounded by vineyards.

You’ll get the lowdown on how this landscape has been shaped by humans and the varieties of wading birds that make a habitat here.

3. Playa del Cura

Playa del Cura

This bay right on the resort’s seafront has more of an urban feel compared to La Mata, and is full of life in the summer.

It’s a gentle curve of fine sand lapped by low waves as the beach is shielded from the open sea by two long breakwaters.

These gentler waves make El Cura a bit safer for toddlers and smaller children to paddle about in.

To the rear is the renovated Avenida de los Marineros, a grand esplanade planted with palm trees and offering restaurants and ice cream shops.

4. Aquapark Flamingo

Aquapark Flamingo Torrevieja

For people coming to Torrevieja with smaller children and toddlers, this compact water park is a fun way to pass a hot afternoon.

It’s not particularly large, with only four slides, but is very well-staffed, with lifeguards covering every pool and ride.

Parents will be able to pick a sun lounger in the shade and keep a close eye on their children without having to follow them around the park.

There’s also a pool area for grown-ups to take a dip and a restaurant serving fast food, though many families bring a picnic.

5. Dique de Levante

Dique de Levante

For the ultimate view of Torrevieja from the sea you can walk along one of the long breakwaters that pushed a long way out into the Mediterranean: So far in fact that a round trip from the waterside in the port to the beacon at the end of the Dique de Levante is about two miles.

There wasn’t always a path here, and for many years the breakwater was known for its seedy atmosphere.

This all changed in the year 2000 when the walkway was unveiled, and the path became a popular way to get some exercise at any time of year.

Bring your camera and you’ll have some fantastic shots of the resort and its port from a mile out to sea.

6. Delfín Submarine Museum

Delfín Submarine Museum

For just €2 you can board two heritage vessels in Torrevieja’s harbour.

The most exciting of the two is a French-built Daphné class submarine, built in 1973 and decommissioned in 2003 when it became the Spanish navy’s first ever museum vessel.

This submarine was able to stay submerged for 30 days at a time and could sail for 4,500 miles without needing to refuel.

You’ll find out how 56 people managed to live down here and take a look at the communications equipment and torpedo bays.

In the other berth is the Albatross III patrol boat, in service for three decades for the coastguard and Spanish customs.

7. Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción

Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción

Torrevieja’s name in Spanish translates to “Old Tower”, and this refers to one of the late-medieval watchtowers that are set at intervals along the coast and were here long before there was a town.

The “old tower” is gone, but the stones were used in the late-18th century to build this neoclassical church.

The best time to drop by is a well away from the tourist season, at Christmas when there’s a large and very detailed Belen (nativity scene) on display in the square in front.

8. Vía Verde

Vía Verde Torrevieja

Spain has lots of scenic paths that follow the course of disused railway tracks and Torrevieja has a great example.

It’s a seven-kilometre route that was part of a line that was built at the advent of the local mining industry but shut down in the 1970s.

Now it’s a handy walking and cycling route past the east shore of the Laguna Salada de Torrevieja.

You’ll depart from the Old Railway Station and finish at the small town of Los Montesinos.

Once you leave the resort behind you’ll have widescreen views of the lagoon and the countryside on the shore.

9. Torrevieja’s Parks

Plaza de la Constitución

The resort has ample green space, with a number of parks and squares.

In the summer they’re fantastic in the mornings and evenings when the air is a little fresher.

The most photo-worthy is Plaza de la Constitución, where the Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción and Torrevieja’s town hall are located.

You can perch for a minute on the walls of the planting beds, watch the palm fronds flickering in the breeze and see the town coming to life.

Jardín de las Naciones is larger and a few minutes to the west.

At the centre of this park is a 6,000 square-metre lake with an ornamental peninsula with a scale outline of the European continent and flags planted to represent each nation.

10. Water Sports

La Bocana - Wake Boarding

Set in the harbour and protected from sea currents you can visit the La Bocana Water Sports Centre.

They organise snorkelling trips and other coastal adventures, and also hire out kayaks and paddle boards for up to three hours.

You can also have a go at cable-skiing on the course in the harbour, and if you’re up to it you can even try using the ramp for jumps.

For those content to watch the action from a distance there’s a waterside lounge bar where you can wish good luck to your friends or family with a cold beer and some tapas!

11. Boat Trips

Torrevieja Boat Trip

Also in Torrevieja’s harbour are a handful of cruise companies offering trips out to sea.

You could set off on a brief tour of the local coastline for half an hour or so, which is a good pick for people who tend to get seasick.

If you’re feeling more adventurous than that then you could always go as far as the Island of Tabarca.

You’ll go ashore for a walk around the island’s old settlement, where there’s a small grid of traditional houses on cobblestone streets.

For centuries this was a staging post for the Barbary pirates who wreaked havoc on Spain’s coast.

12. Alicante

Alicante

The capital of the Costa Blanca is in range for a day trip and definitely merits the 50-minute drive north.

The city and port is in the shadow of the colossal Mount Benacantil and the walls of Santa Bárbara Castle cling to these slopes.

The castle goes as far back as the 800s, and La Torreta at the top of the complex is from the Moorish years.

Down in the city you can observe the port from below the palms on the stately Explanada de España or climb the winding streets and stairways of the Barrio de Santa Cruz, the oldest part of Alicante, where walls are decorated with geometric tiles and balconies are bursting with flowers.

Elche Palmeral

An easy half-hour road trip north of Torrevieja will get you to Elche where there’s a thrilling UNESCO site.

The Palmeral of Elche is a set of date palm groves laid out in the 900s by the Moors and sustained by a sophisticated irrigation systems that still work to this day.

There are almost 100 groves in all, comprising anything up to 200,000 individual trees, some of which are 300 years old.

Fair to say that there’s nothing else like this in Europe.

Also Moorish is Elche’s Altamira Palace, now housing the city’s archaeological museum where some fabulous Bronze Age artefacts are on show.

14. Local Food and Drink

arroz con costra

Paella is on the menu at pretty much any holiday destination around Spain’s Mediterranean.

But in the Valencian Community you can be sure that it’s an authentic regional dish.

The rice for paella is grown in the fields to the north and south of Valencia, and is used in a host of traditional preparations, both savoury and sweet.

Very local is arroz con costra, cooked in a paella pan and made with egg and a assortment of sausages like botifarra and lonaniza.

Also originating in this part of Spain is turrón a hard nougat with almonds, and horchata, a cool drink with milk, ground tiger nuts, almonds and cinnamon.

Murcia Cathedral

Little more than 45 minutes west of Torrevieja is the city of Murcia, the capital of its own region.

Murcia had a boom in the 17th and 18th centuries when the silk industry endowed the city with money to burn.

At that time the baroque style was in fashion, and this is why there’s  such a beautiful assembly of lavish baroque churches.

Don’t miss the cathedral with its marvellous facade, or the works of Francisco Salzillo, an 18th-century sculptor feted for his religious pieces that are still used in the city’s Semana Santa processions at Easter.

Visit Torrevieja’s Pink Salt Lake

Torrevieja is famous for it’s salt lagoons, especially the unusual pink lake which is one of the top places to see in Torrevieja. The two salt lakes (one pink, one green) are an important nature reserve in the area and of great importance to the city. The lakes are the biggest and oldest salt lakes in Europe and still in production today.

If you want to get a close look at the pink lake you can do so by parking up in the San Luis urbanisation just outside of the town. However, this part of the lake can be quite murky as despite the ‘no swimming’ signs many people do paddle or swim here as well as let their dogs swim in the lake.

The better option is to jump on the land train in the centre of Torrevieja and take a guided tour to the salt production part of the lake that is otherwise closed off to the public. You will be amazed by the colour of the water here – the bluer the sky the pinker the water! You can even spot flamingos here in the summer.

For an unforgettable experience you can book onto a wonderful c ulinary demonstration with gourmet tasting as the sun sets over the pink lake.

Been in Torrevieja getting on for a year now and I’m looking for a job of any sorts that could hopefully earn me around €200 per week. From cleaning to labouring to bar work to pool cleaning I would happily consider any job I might be offered. I speak native English, I can hold a conversation in Polish and I am forever learning Spanish. I don’t own a car, but do have a bicycle. Looking very much for local work.

Look forward to hearing from anybody who can help me help you. Thank you very much for reading. Andy

The streets of the traditional center (around the town hall) are pedestrian (or semi-pedestrian) and in them we find a wide range of restaurants and shops of various kinds. In summer we have found that the area is quiet until late at night, when tourists return from the beaches.

6. Torrevieja Promenade

Torrevieja’s maritime façade is ideal for enjoying relaxed walks along the seashore. From Playa del Cura , we walk to Paseo Juan Aparicio , where we can admire the sculpture in honor of Bella Lola ―a popular Havanan― or the Monument to the Man of the Sea . To continue, we can cross the extensive Levant Dam, three kilometers long, or go to the Eras de la Sal , an old wooden jetty through which the salt from the Salinas was loaded onto barges bound for different countries. .

It is in this historic venue that one of the most important events in Torrevieja is held: the International Habaneras and Polyphony Contest , declared of International Tourist Interest. The origin of this event we have to look for in the trips of the Torrevieja sailors to Cuban lands , where this musical style comes from. It is said that the sailors used to listen to habaneras in the cafes of Havana, while they waited melancholy for the return of their ships.

In 1940, the Torrevieja trawling and purse-seine fleet was the largest in the Mediterranean, with more than 500 fishermen on board. Fuente: pescadetorrevieja.com

7. Visit to the Torrevieja Salt Flats

The history of Torrevieja is linked to that of its Reales Salinas , possession of the crown for centuries, and of which there is evidence of their exploitation already before the 12th century. It was from the decree of Carlos IV, ordering the transfer of the Salinas exploitation center from its origin in the kill until its location in the current Torrevieja, in the year 1803, when the group of salt workers’ houses around the old watchtower of the coast -the Old Tower- began to grow until it became the prosperous city that in 1931 obtained The title of city by Alfonso XIII.

The City Council of Torrevieja offers six daily shifts of a guided visit to the Laguna Rosa de Torrevieja , that is, to the salt exploitation, which is carried out by means of a little tourist train . Lasting one hour, this tour allows you to get to know the most important sea salt flats in Europe , with a price of €8.95 for adults and €7.95 for children and people over 65 years of age.

8. Typical Products of Torrevieja

If you are looking for an establishment where you can buy typical Torrevieja products, we recommend Casa Maciá Specialties , located in the same building as the Central Market “La Plasa”. 9. Natural Park of the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja.

At present, although still exploited, the environment of the Torrevieja salt flats gives rise to the Natural Park of the Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja , shared with the towns of Guardamar del Segura, Los Montesinos and Rojales. The Generalitat Valenciana decreed the protection of this natural space in 1996, thanks to its great environmental importance .

It is made up of two lagoons – the emerald green of La Mata and the striking pink lagoon of Torrevieja -habitat for numerous species of plants and animals. birds among which stands out the colorful flamenco concentrations of more than 2,000 specimens have been recorded. Equally important is the presence of the Artemia salina , a small crustacean that forms the base of the food chain for the more than 100 species of birds that take refuge in the lagoons during their migrations or wintering.

We take this opportunity to remember that bathing in the Lagunas de La Mata and Torrevieja is prohibited .

10. Ecotourism in La Mata Lagoon

To get to know the Lagunas de la Mata and Torrevieja Natural Park, closely related to El Hondo and the Salinas de Santa Pola , its Interpretation Center, located next to the Laguna de la Mata , is also a must.

Several low-difficulty walking routes start from there, as well as an accessible route , suitable for people with functional diversity.

In this environment, the existence of a unique vineyard stands out which, thanks to the fact that it grows on a sandy substrate, managed to survive the terrible phylloxera plague that devastated this crop throughout Europe during the 19th century.

To learn more about all these attractions, we recommend participating in the ecotourism routes organized by the Torrevieja City Council.

15 Best Things to do in Torrevieja (Spain)

Here’s a list of the 15 best things to do in Torrevieja in Spain , along with famous landmarks, museums, and other points of interest.

Torrevieja is a beloved seaside town in the province of Alicante on the famous Costa Blanca. Previously, the city was primarily a fishing village and an important site for salt mining.

Torrevieja features a healthy microclimate, thanks to its location between the sea and salt lakes.  Many expats and tourists come here to enjoy the sunshine all-year-round and a high-quality of life.

The name Torrevieja comes from the ancient guard tower, Torre Vieja, which means Old Tower. Since the early 1800s, the town has grown rapidly from just a few citizens to more than 83,000 residents, according to the latest official estimate from 2019.

In this article, I’m sharing some of the best places to visit in Torrevieja as well as interesting facts and attractions that shouldn’t be missed while visiting.

Laguna Salada de Torrevieja

It’s not every day that you find yourself on the banks of a bright pink lake. In Torrevieja, the Laguna Salada represents what brought this quiet village its most important industry.

Part of a natural reserve known as Las. Salinas de Torrevieja, the lake is pink thanks to the Halobacterium content, as well as a micro-algae called Dunaliella Salina.

Visit the lake on a sunny day to see the beautiful pink colors at their finest. I think that the pink lake in Torrevieja is one of the natural wonders of Spain.

Laguna Salada de Torrevieja

La Mata Beach

La Mata beach is Torrevieja’s longest beach, stretching 2.3 kilometers along the coast. It begins at Cabo Cervera on the south end and stretches to the Guardamar dunes and Torredelamata.

It gets as wide as 40 meters, meaning there is plenty of room for all types of beachgoers. The promenade that stretches along the beach holds all types of restaurants, beach bars, and other facilities.

La Mata Beach

Aquapark Flamingo

This tiny water park is the little brother to Aquapolis, making it recommendable for families with smaller children. The Entrance fee ranges from free (for children under 4) to €14 for adults.

Open from June to September, the park holds two swimming pools, two slides, and a few other attractions. The limited offering is nonetheless perfect for families with smaller children, who wouldn’t be able to take full advantage of the larger water parks.

Museos flotantes Delfin S-61 y Albatros III

A museum that floats on the water? When the museum is a former submarine, it makes sense. The S-61 Delfin was gifted to Torrevieja by the Spanish navy, as a way to commemorate the Spanish Armada and the 1974 gift the town made to the submarine.

The boat was turned into a museum, which offers the chance to see what the interior of a submarine is really like, as well as learn about the lives of those aboard.

This popular museum is only €2 to enter and has been visited over 1.3 million times. The Patrullera Albatros III is also open to the public.

Mercadillo de Torrevieja

The outdoor market of Torrevieja is an incredibly popular weekly market that takes place on Fridays. The market normally holds nearly 500 stalls in its 80,000 square meters, and it is attended by thousands of locals, visitors, and neighbors.

The stalls sell fruit, clothing, shoes, food products, and pretty much anything else you can imagine. There is a bus service from the center of town that leaves every 20 minutes. The market runs from 8am to 2pm.

Playa del Cura

The “Priest’s Beach” is Torrevieja’s most central beach. At 325 meters long and nearly 30 meters wide, the beach fills quickly with sunbathers and visitors, who flock to the area for its many facilities, restaurants, and chiringuitos .

The curious name comes from the 19 th century when a priest drowned while swimming at the beach. At the north point, on punta Margalla, sits the Monumento a las Culturas del Mediterráneo, known in short as “the columns”, which is one of the most photographed places in Torrevieja.

Playa del Cura Torrevieja

Iglesia de La Inmaculada Concepcion

This church was founded in 1789, as the city of Torrevieja was growing and needed its own parish. The current structure dates back to 1880, with a Neoclassical façade that was erected atop former structures.

The two bell towers were built in 1907. Outside, you will be greeted by a statue of Christ, over the front door and the arched entrance. The interior is also bright white, decorated with images of the Immaculate Conception.

Museum of Sea and Salt

The importance of sea and salt in the history of Torrevieja cannot be overstated. This ethnological museum shows the history of Torrevieja through these two elements.

Fascinating exhibitions on submarine archaeology, fishing, the Salinas, and carpentry as well as traditional salt-making techniques give the viewer an idea of this industry’s importance in the area. The submarine Delfin S-61 is part of the museum, unique in all of Spain for its status as a “floating museum”.

Parque de las Naciones

Well-loved by tourists and residents of Torrevieja, the Parque de las Naciones is a 35,000 square meter park with loads of gardens and green areas, as well as other attractions.

Centrally located but out of the main bustle of the city, parking is easy, leaving you with no excuse not to visit. The impressive waterfall is worth seeing, and the different habitats of the park play host to different birds, fowl, and other wildlife. The park also holds an exhibition hall.

Parque de las Naciones

Visit Isla Tabarca

The island of Tabarca is a great escape from the summer heat of Torrevieja. Jump on one of the boats that head to the island several times a day and feel the sea breeze through your hair as you sail to Tabarca.

At just 40 minutes by boat, Tabarca is the smallest island in Spain that is inhabited. The population is 80, though it formerly saw more movement as a refuge for pirates up until the 1800s.

Remains of the old fortification, built by King Charles III, are visible when you arrive, as is the desert-like topography. Visit the beautiful town and lighthouse and lunch on a bit of seafood for a perfect day trip.

Tabarca Island

Torre del Moro

Located on a hill over Cabo Cervera, Torre del Moro is a circular watchtower that is thought to date back as far as 1312. This is when a system of defense was authorized on this area of the coast, although construction continued in the years posterior to this.

Now only a single wall remains, but the ruins remind visitors of the deep history of the region. And today, it’s one of the most famous landmarks in Torrevieja.

El Hondo Nature Reserve

The Natural Park of El Hondo is a protected wetland and a Natural Park, with protected status. This nature reserve has an area of 2495 hectares, and it is made up of many lagoons, including the very large manmade lagoon Levante.

The river Segura flows into them, and the changes in the salinity of the water allow for different types of vegetation and surroundings. Walkways allow the visitor to see the different landscapes the reserve has to offer.

El Hondo Nature Reserve

Las Colinas Golf

Las Colinas Golf is Torrevieja’s award-winning 18-hole golf course. However, it is more than just golf—on 330 hectares you can find a country club, a residential complex, and a gated resort that has all the facilities you can imagine.

Voted Best Golf Course in Spain in 2015, 2016, and 2017, it was designed by famed American architect Cabell B. Robinson. If you’re not a member, you can choose from rates and packages of 10, 20, or even 30 rounds.

Las Colinas Golf Country Club

Aquopolis Torrevieja

Aquopolis is the largest, most famous water park in Torrevieja. Second, only to the enormous water park in nearby Benidorm, it offers over 15 attractions.

Located right outside the center of Torrevieja, there are rides for all ages, including slides, Jacuzzis, a wave pool, zip lines, a lazy river, and more. The most intense of the attractions are the high-speed, high-adrenaline Kamikaze, Speed, and Boomerang. Smaller children will enjoy the charmed Lake and the mini water park.

Go-Karts Orihuela Costa

The Orihuela Go-Kart course is a favorite family activity on the Costa Blanca. The tracks are in perfect shape, and they include an all-ages track as well as a separate track for younger children, aged 5 to 10.

On offer are 11 CV karts or the more powerful Honda 400 CCs.  They even have tandem carts for two and competition-level karts for those with lots of experiences. The facilities also offer quad bikes for rent and a paintball course.

Both lakes are also homelands for all types of animals, including foxes, toads and lizards and if you’re lucky enough, you can see the beautiful dragonflies and a variety of different coloured insects pass on by.

The Friday Market (like most crowded places) abounds with very clever pickpockets. Make sure that any valuables you have with you are absolutely unreachable by anyone but yourself. If you are unlucky, you will need to report it to the Guardia Civil and not the Policia Local. Keep a copy of the report ( la denunciación ), as you will need the incident number for any insurance claim or for a replacement driving licence (if that was stolen too). The thieves often work in pairs. One will shield the other from view while the other is dipping into your bag or pocket.

Norwegian tourist ‘stabs her husband to death in front of their three children’ during argument on Spain’s Costa Blanca

torrevieja spain tourist

A NORWEGIAN woman has been arrested on the Orihuela Costa for allegedly stabbing her husband to death in front of their three young children.

The family had been on holiday since May, staying on the PAU-9 Garbanzuel urbanisation close to the municipal border with Torrevieja.

The woman, 49, phoned emergency services at 1.35am on Friday to say that she had got into an argument with her partner.

She stated that after being attacked, she acted in self-defence by plunging a kitchen knife at least three times into him, witnessed by their children aged 6, 8, and 10.

The woman told the operator that she believed that her husband, 45, was dead.

Paramedics were unable to do anything to save the man’s life while she was treated for her injuries and arrested by the Guardia Civil.

She was then taken to Torrevieja Hospital where she was scheduled to have surgery following an arm injury.

The children were transferred to a reception centre before family members who also live on the Orihuela Costa were located to look after them.

The husband’s body was taken to the Institute of Legal Medicine in Alicante, where an autopsy was scheduled to be performed on Friday morning.

The Civil Guard has no record of any domestic violence reports involving the couple, but are investigating whether there had been any complaints filed in Norway.
