How Tom Cruise Remains Youthful at 61, and How You Can Too
The Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning star belies his 61 years with a dedicated nutrition and training plan

Tom Cruise has been climbing skyscrapers, halo jumping from planes and leaping from motorbikes for more than three decades now, but seven Mission: Impossible s (soon to be eight), two Top Gun s and a War of the Worlds later, and he's still going strong. At this point, it's fair to say he's the action heroes' action hero, but how exactly has he done it so well for so long?
Could it be the prodigious work ethic? A training regimen with no let up or is it his carefully-managed diet? Well, chances are, it’s all of the above and so much more.
There is no one thing that keeps Cruise in action hero shape or maintains his position as, arguably, the last great Hollywood star. There are multiple secrets behind his youthfulness. And now they’re yours too, should you choose to accept them.

Interpersonal Skills
‘yes, i’ll spend two hours with fans. people are really kind to come out, so i want to say hello.’.
Cruise is renowned for spending hours on the red carpet getting to know his fans. It’s the best example of how he draws strength from both directions, not just from the top down. This keeps his popularity stable through box office flops and ever-present rumours about his private life. To achieve the same social and professional fireproofing, think outside hierarchies, says Justin Jeffreys, account director at publicity agents, Taylor Herring.
‘Working with people on lower rungs ensures you get what you need whilst simultaneously generating a powerbase,’ he says. Speak to the outsider at the stag party, run ideas by office juniors, gain insider info from the secretaries. ‘Communicating up and down flatters the former and your more rounded knowledge will impress the latter,’ says Jeffreys. Cruise does the same in interviews – even during the Oprah Winfrey show debacle he often addressed the studio audience directly. Just try not to ruin the furniture.

The Work Ethic
Interviewer: ‘did you learn a bit of german for the part’ cruise: ‘i learnt german.’.
That was for Valkyrie . For The Colour of Money, Cruise played pool for 12 hours a day to prep. ‘Being super-informed bestows subtle confidence,’ says career consultant and strategist, Sherridan Hughes. ‘Everyone else will feel at ease working with you and for you. You’re more flexible and adaptable than your peers because whatever happens, you’ve covered it.’ Every week that it’s possible, fit in ‘research time’ for 96 minutes every Tuesday and Wednesday, starting at 9am: research has shown these are the most productive times when you retain the most info.
Generate crib cards for the subjects that matter most in your business and add to them with digestible bullet points that you can reference at key moments. ‘It’ll keep brain space free,’ adds Hughes. ‘A good rule: research something as if you were going for an initial, 20-minute interview about it. This stops you going too in depth but covers the key bases.’ Think Rain Man in a hurry.
The Tom Cruise Body
When asked how he stays young, cruise responded: ‘sea-kayaking, caving... fencing, treadmill, weights... rock-climbing, hiking... i jog... i do so many different activities.’.
Cruise doesn’t just have the body of a man half his age – he moves like one (remember the Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation fight scene?) Variety is the secret for those of us for whom David Beckham isn’t a training buddy. ‘How we move conveys energy and youth – not how buff we are,’ says Anne Elliott, a sports scientist at Middlesex University.
‘Regularly switching up cardio and strength work with something like fencing or climbing – like Cruise – maintains flexibility and balance: the first two things that give your age away.’ Drop unusual practices into your workout, such as one-armed barbell presses – it’ll help unearth your physical weak spots. You can then work on them which will mean you maintain a more youthfully functioning body overall.

Tom Cruise's Style
Like his body, cruise maintains a youthful style without ever looking like he’s dressing too young. he still regularly appears in best-dressed lists..
His style choices identify Cruise as ‘well dressed’, rather than ‘short’, says Alan Au of Jimmy Au’s menswear of Beverly Hills, a known haunt of Cruise’s stylist. ‘The right fit conveys power and shows you've accepted who you are, physically. Cruise always wears a well tailored coat (lapels not too big or small) whether smart casual and his ‘relaxed’ is only just loose enough (too loose looks hand-me-down).’
Avoid boxy cuts and styles and bring attention up to the face and chest with a lighter top. Make sure only a quarter-inch of sleeve hem is showing from jackets. Cruise favours turtlenecks and Au agrees they work – ‘but avoid the chunkier styles. The three-quarter-necks are better. They are shorter and give the same effect – while still leaving you with a neck.’
The Mind-set
‘i don’t invalidate it when i can’t do something...i say, 'that’s interesting' and go with it. it’s from there you get your energy.’.
Failures don’t floor Cruise; he uses them to reboot momentum and uncover more of his personal skill set. ‘Never avoid looking at why something went wrong – list all the reasons why it did as soon as you can,‘ says clinical psychologist Dr Abigael San . It could be a relationship or weight loss plan as much as the movie Vanilla Sky . ‘Failure leads to inaction. Planning goals as soon as possible restores a feeling of power and control. If you didn’t get a promotion, do all you can to find out why.’

Write notes in a special document or folder on your computer, analysing everything in detail. ‘Physicalising the reasons snaps us out of negativity. Now consider three things you can do immediately with this situation,’ he says. Set yourself a deadline of three months to action what you come up with. ‘Each little success along the way – a new responsibility at work; a date with somebody new – will reframe that initial ‘fail’ as a catalyst to self-development,’ adds Write.
The Tom Cruise Diet
Cruise has previously been linked to a daily diet consisting of a just 1200 calories, grilled foods and a noticeable absence of carbohydrates..
It doesn’t sound nearly enough fuel for the ultra-active short stack, but it’s probably his youth elixir. Carbs generate insulin – an ageing hormone, says nutritional scientist Dr Paul Clayton, author of Health Defence . ‘They become glucose molecules in the body, damaging muscle and skin tissues which causes ageing,’ he says. Clayton recommends fermentable carbs like legumes and pulses, which produce less insulin than digestible carbs like grains and spuds. If you must have your cake, eat it all in one meal only; a single insulin surge is less damaging than regular carb-snacking.
Chronic tissue inflammation also speeds up ageing. Avoid it by cooking at low temperatures (ie grilling), and increase anti-inflammatory nutrients like flavonoids (from onions, say, or citrus fruits), isoflavones (from soy) and 1316 beta-glucan (found in brewer’s yeast supplements). Cue that youthful Cruise appearance: you’ll have her – hell, everyone – at hello.

Can you believe we don’t have a Tom Cruise workout yet?
I know, me neither.
With the new movie Top Gun: Maverick currently filming it enforced a sense of obligation on me to have Tom Cruise’s routine on the site well before release.
He’s been pumping out some great movies, forever, but also recently as well. Continuing on with the Mission: Impossible series with “ Fallout “, and in 2017 both American Made and The Mummy were pretty damn awesome.
Another quick mention I’m going to throw in here just because I love the books is the fact that Cruise also plays Jack Reacher (from the Lee Child series) in two awesome movies.
Figured I’d remind you…
Tom Cruise Stats:
Height: 5’7
Weight: 170 lbs.
Age: 56 years old
Tom Cruise is pretty short.
Like, well below average among celebs we’ve seen at SHJ.
The shorter range is guys like Mark Wahlberg , Zac Efron , Kit Harington , Tom Holland and more.
The average height falls in the range of 6’1-6’3 with celebs like Chris Pratt , Chris Hemsworth , Hugh Jackman , Chris Evans , Adam Driver , Stephen Amell , Clive Standen and so many more.
Even taller than them are guys like The Mountain , Dwayne Johnson , Joe Manganiello , Ben Affleck , Jason Momoa , Ray Fisher , Winston Duke , Alexander Skarsgard and a few others.
But, don’t worry either way.
We write these routines to be utilized by any shape and size.

Tom Cruise Diet and Nutrition
Currently Tom Cruise has a bit of a “different” diet regime going on.
I’m going to share it with you, and then I’m going to talk about sustainability and some other options.
In an article from NewsHub.co we get some details what they call his “bizarre diet”:
Tom Cruise’s bizarre eating habits and on-set behaviour have been revealed after he and his Mission: Impossible team wrapped up a month’s shooting in New Zealand. According to a source who worked on the South Island set, the Top Gun star opts against the standard three meals per day in favour of a daily diet of 15 snacks. Cruise is said to have had his own pair of personal chefs who prepared the small courses for him, which included freeze-dried organic blueberries and nuts.
I mean, I have nothing against being different and not having three meals a day.
I personally have two meals a day and intermittent fast the majority of the day like Hugh Jackman and Terry Crews .
But, hey, it’s about what works for YOU.
And, Mr. Cruise, if 15 mini meals is working, you do you!
We promote sustainability above everything else at SHJ. If you can’t sustain being a SuperHuman, what’s the use?
That’s why our Academy Nutrition Classes (Monks, Greek Gods, Spartans, SuperHumans, Vikings, Minimalists, Hunter Gatherers, Samurais) are based around our members finding what works specifically for each individual.
If Cruise finds that it’s easiest for him to split up his meals into 15 mini spurts, then so be it. At the end of the day it’s going to come down to his macronutrients and calories more than anything else.
The tools you use while eating those calories are more about YOU.

Tom Cruise Workout Routine Research
So there’s a good handful of “Tom Cruise Workout Routine” articles out there currently.
None of which I like.
All contradict each other, and none seem to utilize any of the sources that actually come from interviews with Cruise.
Thankfully, we’re going to use an interview Men’s Health did with Cruise in order to build the routine.
Men’s Health states:
When asked how he stays young, Cruise responded: “Sea-kayaking, caving… fencing, treadmill, weights… rock-climbing, hiking… I jog… I do so many different activities.” Cruise doesn’t just have the body of a man half his age – he moves like one (remember the Mission Impossible: II opening scene?). Variety is the secret for those of us for whom David Beckham isn’t a training buddy. “How we move conveys energy and youth – not how buff we are,” says Anne Elliott, a sports scientist at Middlesex University. “Regularly switching up cardio and strength work with something like fencing or climbing – like Cruise – maintains flexibility and balance: the first two things that give your age away.”
We have seen this SO often among celebrities.
Utilizing your fitness and moving.
I can’t even tell you how many programs feature a 3 day weight training regime with a 2 day “activity” regime like this one will.
Because it’s in the hundreds.
That’s how often we see it among these celebs that are getting out there and being active while sustaining their fitness.
As I write in the Superhero Programs we have, I personally like to utilize a walk for cardio and on off-days as well. I like to get outside and see some scenery. That is usually for about an hour a day, but can be longer. This sometimes turns into a hike or a bike, but I’m always getting out there and getting active.
Use the fitness you build for yourself!
Let’s do this.
Tom Cruise Workout Routine

Training Volume:
5 days per week
Explanation:
I’m going to program you three days of weight training and cardio and it’s going to be your job to get active and utilize other forms of fitness on the other two days.

The Superhero Academy now comes with an Upgrade Your Workout Tool that allows Academy members to turn any SHJ workout into a 4-8 week fully planned regime detailing exact weights to lift and including reverse & tradition pyramid training, straight sets, super sets, progressive overload and more.

What It’s Like When Tom Cruise Is Your Workout Buddy, As Described by Jake Johnson

Jake Johnson had to get a just a little bit swoll for The Mummy , the newest movie where Tom Cruise does a lot of glamorous running. But the New Girl star didn’t just have to work out, he got to work out with Tom Cruise. Sure, the Rock’s workout might be the most covetable and curious in Hollywood, but in an interview with Thrillist , Johnson gives us a peek into Cruise’s very intense regimen. Before they started shooting their Mummy remake, Cruise took an interest in Johnson’s personal fitness. Johnson cutely calls it “anti-Hollywood,” but what’s more Hollywood than Tom Cruise giving you access to — nay, insisting — that you use his coterie of personal trainers and chefs?
Here’s a story that is very anti-Hollywood, but very Tom. He wanted me to work out with him and get in shape for the movie. People have told me in the past, including New Girl , that I need to lose weight and stay in shape. But they don’t tell me how. It’s like, “Hey tubbo, fit into these slacks!” Tom said, “I really want you fit for this movie.” I literally thought I was going to have to call Max Greenfield to do Crossfit. But Tom said, “You’ll be training with me and my trainers. If you want I’ll put you on a food plan with my chef. The food is great.” And the food was great.
Cruise quickly became Johnson’s workout buddy, a job he approached with the same level of dedication as he does most of his stunts .
He [also] said I could use his gym whenever I wanted. One day I got to work to work out and one of the [assistant directors] goes, “You can’t go in right now because Tom is working out.” I thought, “That sucks, I got here an hour early to get this in, but he’s Tom Cruise.” After, when we were shooting later that day, he said, “What happened to you? I thought you said you were going to work out this morning?” I told him I was told not to bother him and he got really pissed. He said, “Let me make something crystal clear: I don’t care what anybody on the crew says to you, they don’t know what I’m saying to you. And I’m saying to you that you are always welcome. I don’t care what I’m doing in there. You’re not other. You’re my castmate. Come in.” He’s the best.
A trainer makes you run drills. Workout buddy Tom Cruise invests in your physical fitness because, you know, friendship.

Tom Cruise’s Diet Plan, Exercise & Workout – How Does He Look So Young?

Tom Cruise is a very well-known American actor .
He is known (more by women probably!) for his clean-cut handsome face.
How can we ever forget him in the 1980s when he appeared in Top Gun as a navy jet pilot? No wonder it was the highest-grossing film of 1986.
He has always been a superb actor, of course, already acting in high school. After, school, he made his name in the movies with his debut movie, Endless Love in 1981.
Movie after movie followed; The Color of Money , Rain Man , Born on the Fourth of July , and heaps more. With such handsome looks, the roles just kept coming, and with them, Academy Awards as well!
His personal life, therefore, also attracted heaps of attention; just as much as his acting.
His marriage to Nicole Kidman created huge Hollywood furor as did their divorce in 2001.
And he became a highly controversial figure when he became very outspoken in support of Scientology. Then in 2006, he gained a lot of attention again when he married actress Katie Holmes, but they divorced in 2012.
They had a daughter Suri, who lives with her mom.
Tom’s name has been romantically connected to many an actress’s name, and as we speak, his name is linked at the moment with that of Hayley Atwell.
They fanned plenty of rumors when they were spotted attending the singles final at Wimbledon.
He owns heaps of mansions – just look at them all!
But it is rumored he spends quite a bit of time at the magnificent Florida penthouse as it is just a few blocks away from the Scientology Headquarters.

Workout Principles of Tom Cruise
One thing about Tom Cruise, his fitness levels and physique have stayed consistent over the years.
He hasn’t undergone any shocking and transformational makeovers.
Cruise has kept away from those kinds of trends and sported his same athletic look since he arrived in Hollywood years ago.
It really sets him apart from the rest of the pack; like one of the Hollywood Golden Era stars! He has maintained his same aesthetic look through the years which requires great discipline.
Today’s modern Hollywood stars can change their entire look in weeks – this aesthetic-obsessed world demands it.
However, Tom has proven that at 59, without any changes, he is and has continued to wow the envious fans and crowds.
Tom has fitness principles that act as his anchors and which keep him on the right path. He swears by these principles:
1) Eat less
It is rumored that Tom trains a lot with David Beckham – so that means Tom follows a 1200 calorie-a-day diet plan. Most dieters know that if you want to lose weight you need to be using up more calories than you eat.
2) Don’t restrict yourself to the weight room
Tom Cruise doesn’t stick only to the gym to get his workouts.
He loves outdoor activities and loves all forms of active adventure that keep him fit naturally.
He says, “Sea-kayaking, caving, fencing, treadmill, weights, rock-climbing, hiking, I jog, I do so many different activities.”
Tom Cruise’s Training Methods
Tom Cruise never misses out on the fun while he is working out. He will do cardio and weight training for three days.
The other two days of his training program he will dedicate to thoroughly enjoying adventure activities.
After these, he allows himself two days of rest.
This gives his muscles plenty of time to rest, recover, and restore.
His training methods help to take away any monotony in his workouts.
Tom follows an upper-lower split workout plan .
This means he focuses on his upper and lower body muscles not on the same day – on different days.
This workout split goes hand in hand with some of the adventure activities he loves to include in his workout regime.
This is how a week’s training schedule looks like:
- Monda y: Tom work on his chest, shoulders, and triceps
- Tuesday : Tom enjoys a busy activity day
- Wednesday : He works on back biceps and traps
- Thursday: Another busy activity day
- Friday : He works his legs and lower body
- Saturday and Sund ay: Rest
Tom Cruise’s Workout Routine
Tom isn’t a fan of going to the gym every day of the week, so if you are not a fan either, you will love Tom’s workout plans.
He believes in adding versatility to his workout plans.
He doesn’t restrict himself to any one type of workout to stay fit.
He enjoys other adventurous activities like running, or fencing, hiking, and kayaking, just as examples.
Weight training and doing cardio are the most important parts of Tom’s workout routine.
Cardio helps him to increase his metabolism and gives him the energy to perform his own stunts.
Weight training helps Tom to get the picture-perfect physique that people remember seeing him playing on the beach in Top Gun .
Here’s a look at his training routine:
Monday – Triceps, chest, and shoulders
- Stretching – 10-minutes warm-up of walking
- Bench presses 3 sets x 10 reps
- Dumbbell kickbacks – 3 sets x 10 reps
- Dumbbell shoulder presses 3 sets x 10 reps
- Incline presses – 3 sets x 10 reps
- Seated dumbbell shoulder front raise – 3 sets x 10 reps
- Seated dumbbell triceps overhead extensions – 3 sets x 10 reps
- Cable Chest Flys – 3 sets x 10 reps
- Bench presses – 3 sets x 10 reps
Tuesday – Activity Day
Tom will pick from any of his favorite activities such as fencing, caving, sea-kayaking, treadmill, hiking, rock-climbing, jogging, etc.
Wednesday – Biceps, back, and traps

Check these important tips about Tom Cruise’s workout program
- Does his own stunts: That means he works out to keep functional, nimble, strong, and flexible – these are top priorities for Tom.
- He doesn’t spend more than 45 minutes on any workout . So that means he keeps his training intensity high and he doesn’t rest for more than 30 seconds after resting.
- He performs all his exercises with the right forms while following a full range of motion . He doesn’t bother with lifting stuff that is too heavy. The goal of Tom’s workout and diet program is not to put on 10 lbs. in 10 weeks like some of these modern movies today – Rather, he likes to look like someone who has discovered the elixir of youth! Wow, he’s got that one right!
- For activity days on Thursdays and Tuesday s , he makes sure they last for at least an hour. If people are interested in losing weight through these activity days, he recommends that you perform the outdoor workout first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. It is also suggested that you break down 60-minute workouts into smaller HIIT circuits – that will encourage optimal fat loss.
- Remember, that the mind-muscle connection is a vital part of bodybuilding . Don’t do reps just for the sake of it. You need to hold and contract your muscles with every repetition so your muscles are put to optimal use.
- The Tom Cruise workout program keeps a balance between isolation exercises and compound exercises. Compound lifts are good for building strength and improving functionality, and isolation exercises are good at muscle conditioning.
- You need to stretch after every workout , particularly on the activity days – that’s non-negotiable. Workouts need to comprise a combination of dynamic, static, and pre-contraction stretches. Researchers say that regular stretching keeps your muscles strong and healthy to maintain a full range of motion in the joints.
- If you are on a calorie deficit diet like Tom Cruise’s, you can build washboard abs by performing three ab circuits every week. You won’t find any accessory muscles on Tom’s workout program. Although he does weight training three times a week, he doesn’t miss training any muscle group – no matter which group it is. See his Top Gun
- Don’t think Tom’s rest days on the weekends are watching Netflix movies! Far from it. This perfectionist is absolutely committed to working hard in the film industry – you could almost say his motto is to always be better than he was the day before! So for your rest days, it is recommended that go for a walk of around 15-20 minutes or any low-intensity activities or bowling or golf – just staying moving and in a calorie deficit state.
Fans of Tom Cruise find his workout routine like a breath of fresh air, particularly those who loathe the thought of attending a gym six times a week.
Tom’s type of outdoor adventures can keep a person passionate, excited, and motivated for each training session.
Tom Cruise’s Diet Plan
Tom Cruise follows a 15 meals-a-day diet plan – that’s not 5, it’s 15! Only a small portion of the 1200 calories he eats is carbs.
He prefers veggies and lean protein from chicken, fish, whey protein, and egg whites.
He will get healthy fats from eating nuts.
Each of his small 15 meals is prepared by his personal chefs.
His estimated macro-nutrients will be broken up something like this:
- Carbs – 10%
- Protein – 60%
- Fat – 35%
What should you eat on Tom Cruise’s diet?
You can guess what you should avoid.
- Processed sugar
- Refined carbs
- Preservatives
- Artificial sweeteners
According to studies , when you increase your carb intake, you can increase glucose production in the body. This can lead to excess body fat, inflammation of the muscles, etc. A low-carb diet reduces muscular inflammation, particularly for people who have metabolic syndrome or who are obese.
Tom Cruise’s Supplements
Because he follows a low calories diet, Tom relies on these supplements:
- Multivitamins
- Joint support supplements
- Whey protein
Tom Cruise’s noteworthy recommendations
Don’t forget to add fun to your workouts:.
“Sea-kayaking, caving… fencing, treadmill, weights… rock-climbing, hiking… I jog… I do so many different activities.”
Tom just loves adventure sports because they are fun too.
Get proper rest and give your muscles time to recover:
Don’t overdo your workouts.
Cardio is a great way to burn stubborn fat, but don’t skip weight training as it helps you to get bigger and bulkier muscles.
Tom Cruise believes in the saying that ‘age is just a number.’ He has got the looks and the body that says wow! – He has earned the title of a star!
Look, it can’t be promised that if you want to follow the Tom Cruise workout program that you will look like Tom Cruise!
But at least you can get fit and believe in yourself as powerfully as he does, and then let your body do the talking.
“Someday – that’s a dangerous word. It’s really just a code for ‘Never’” – Tom Cruise

Also, Tom's iconic motocross bike stunt from Mission Impossible wouldn't have been possible without this type of fit body and dedicated workout routine.
Tom Cruise’s Daily Diet Plan
Tom Cruise is famous for his strong work ethic, and he applies the same dedication to his diet. His approach is all about moderation. Thus, he enjoys a diverse range of foods but keeps an eye on portion sizes.
He stays away from processed foods, sugary snacks, and too much alcohol, as they can interfere with Tom Cruise’s fitness plan and well-being. During the filming of Top Gun: Maverick , he reportedly consumed just 1200 calories per day, preferring grilled food and avoiding excess oil. This type of low-calorie diet plan may improve one’s energy efficiency and athletic performance ( 2 ). Discover the science behind Tom Cruise's calorie intake and diet routine, along with insights into how his personal chef and celeb friends assist him in creating a healthy meal plan.
Low-Carb Diet: Tom Cruise’s workout diet isn't just a celebrity fad. There's some science behind it too! His friend David Beckham helped design the plan, and it's all about cutting out carbs, like grains and sugar. This may be the secret to Cruise's youthful look, as reducing sugar-rich foods can also prevent the aging of the skin ( 3 ). Likewise, carbs have something called insulin, which is said to be the 'aging hormone' ( 4 ). While the impact of dietary carbohydrates on human aging is not fully understood, clinical studies suggest that a low-carb diet can have positive effects on human health ( 5 ).
Snacking! Tom Cruise also likes to eat smaller, healthier snacks throughout the day instead of three big meals. It fits well with his busy lifestyle. He enjoys having fruits as snacks, which can help reduce depression, anxiety, and emotional distress compared to consuming crisps or chocolate ( 6 ). His favorite snack option is dates filled with peanut butter and sprinkled with coconut, as well as delicious truffle balls.
By focusing on such whole, unprocessed foods, he gets lots of important vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that keep him healthy and reduce inflammation in his body.
Intermittent Fasting: Another key part of his diet is intermittent fasting, which has been proven to have lots of benefits. It is a meal plan where people restrict their meal intake to specific times of the day. It helps control insulin levels, supports weight loss, and even encourages the body to burn stored fat for energy ( 7 ). Plus, following this diet can give you more energy, better mental clarity, and overall well-being ( 8 ), ( 9 ), ( 10 ).
Grilled Foods: Cruise follows a balanced diet that mainly consists of grilled and low-temperature prepared foods. This is because high-temperature cooking has been associated with accelerated aging and chronic tissue inflammation. He usually grills anti-inflammatory foods like salmon, dark chocolate, raw oats, blueberries, ginger, beets, broccoli, olive oil, tomatoes, and spinach. However, it's important to be cautious about consuming excessive grilled, barbecued, and smoked meat, as it may increase mortality after breast cancer ( 11 ).
Antioxidant-rich Foods: And it's not just about looks – the Tom Cruise Diet promotes healthy aging too! He consumes antioxidant-rich foods like fruits, nuts, and vegetables that are also anti-inflammatory in nature ( 12 ). By reducing inflammation and oxidative stress, it can protect against age-related diseases and keep you feeling younger for longer ( 13 ). Cruise's dedication to his diet has definitely helped him stay youthful and full of vitality.
Proper Supplementation: Cruise supplements his nutrient-rich diet with additional vitamins and minerals. Cruise believes these supplements aid in maintaining his health, supporting vital biological processes, and building muscle mass, but their scientific evidence is lacking ( 14 ). His diet includes omega-3 fatty acids, folic acid, magnesium, and whey protein supplements.
Tom Cruise's workout routine and diet are a testament that anyone can maintain a healthy physique at any age. He stays away from bizarre diet plans while emphasizing moderation, avoiding processed foods, and limiting carbs and excessive sugar to maintain his youthful appearance. His diverse workout routine includes running, rock climbing, fencing, and gym workouts, keeping him physically active and fit. This active lifestyle promotes healthy aging and longevity, contributing to his lean physique, energy levels, and overall health.

Tom Cruise Movies, Ranked From Worst to Best
He's more than a guy who looks good in Ray-Bans and runs a lot.

A movie so bad, it was the first and last entry in Universal’s planned monster movie cinematic universe.
Rock of Ages

Amazon Hulu
In this extremely unfortunate musical about ‘80s hair metal, Tom Cruise plays a karaoke version of a rock and roll god named Stacee Jaxx.

Amazon Tubi
Released the same year as Risky Business , Tom Cruise plays the hunk in this high school sex comedy that time forgot. Get it? They’re "losin’ it"—as in their virginity.
Endless Love

In his first on-screen appearance, Tom Cruise is some random shirtless kid in Daisy Dukes bragging about being a pyromaniac.
Lions for Lambs

Nearly a decade before Trump coined the term “Fake News,” Tom Cruise plays a morally corrupt senator making a presidential bid by planting a story through a journalist played by Meryl Streep. In the end, this pretentious and convoluted plot says very little about its moving parts.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Though the tagline warns to never go back, Cruise unfortunately did go back to play the titular Jack Reacher, in a sequel that plays out like dumb, less tech-savvy Mission: Impossible.

Tom Cruise and Mia Sara try to protect the last of the unicorns from Tim Curry, who is some sort of awesome devil muppet. It’s also the only straight-up fantasy movie Cruise has ever done—and it’s pretty obvious why.
Far and Away

Seven years before they co-starred in Eyes Wide Shut (and two years after their wedding), Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman played star-crossed lovers and Irish immigrants trying to make it in America.

In this post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller, Cruise is a drone repairman who’s also into American sports. When he finds a group of survivors (led by Morgan Freeman), he begins to question the nature of his entire reality. As always, Cruise holds down what is otherwise a pretty clunky plot.

YouTube Pluto TV
Tom Cruise plays a German officer with an American accent who leads a group of German soldiers with British accents in a plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler during WWII. It’s based on an actual military plot that could have entered some intriguing territory, had it not settled for being average historical escapism.
Knight and Day

In this action comedy, Cruise is once again a secret agent who accidentally ropes Cameron Diaz into an international conspiracy. For all his macho spy stuff, Cruise proves in Knight and Day that he can take this hero stuff lightly too.
Mission: Impossible II

Paramount+ Netflix
The worst of Cruise’s six Mission: Impossible movies, this one sees Ethan Hunt trying to stop a deadly weaponized virus that’s going to be released by terrorists. Unfortunately, director John Woo’s style didn’t quite fit with the international espionage of this franchise.
Jack Reacher

In his first of two movies playing the titular former military police-officer-turned-vigilante-drifter, Cruise’s character tries to stop a military sniper on a killing spree. Of course, Cruise also did all his own driving stunts.
The Outsiders

Coming down from the golden phase of his career, Francis Ford Coppola assembled an incredible upcoming cast for The Outsiders that included Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Ralph Macchio, and Diane Lane.

In his second-ever onscreen role, Cruise plays David Shawn, one of the military cadets who attempt to protect their academy from being torn down for local condo developers. Pretty low stakes as far as military dramas go.
War of the Worlds

In this Steven Spielberg re-imagining of the H.G. Wells novel, Cruise plays a father attempting to keep his children safe throughout an alien invasion. Though it has all the highlights of a Spielbergian sci-fi, it wasn’t quite enough to cause riots like Orson Welles’s infamous radio broadcast.
The Last Samurai

Amazon Netflix
A white savior complex brings down what is otherwise a well-acted period period piece about an American Civil War veteran sent to train a 19th century Japanese army.
Mission: Impossible III

Before he was put in charge of both Star Wars and Star Trek , J.J. Abrams’s big Hollywood blockbuster movie directorial debut was at the helm of Mission: Impossible III , which saw a retired Ethan Hunt brought back in the game to stop an excellent Philip Seymour Hoffman.
Vanilla Sky

Cruise stars in this philosophical thriller as a man haunted by the specter of a former flame after becoming disfigured in a car crash. (Fun fact: Penelope Cruz plays the same character in this remake of her Spanish film, Abre los Ojos .)
Days of Thunder

NASCAR moved into the mainstream thanks to this movie in which Cruise plays a promising driver hoping to making it in the big leagues.

He avoids junk and oily food and only indulges in cheat meals on rare occasions. The actor stays away from carbohydrates and avoids eating large meals, instead consuming fifteen light micro-meals throughout the day.
Afternoons are dedicated to Cruise’s workouts. While he may not be a gym fan, he incorporates cardio and weight training into his training routine.
When asked by MAartial.com , what he did to keep fit, Cruise said, "Sea-kayaking, caving … fencing, treadmill, weights … rock-climbing, hiking. I jog. I do so many different activities."
In addition, Cruise engages in more traditional physical activities like tennis, jogging, and cycling to stay active.
In the evenings, Cruise winds down and relaxes. He knows the importance of giving his muscles time to recover, so he takes at least two days off from weekly workouts.
Cruise’s routine balances healthy eating and regular exercise, focusing on versatility and enjoyment. He doesn’t follow extreme diets or workout plans but instead keeps things simple and adapts his routine to the demands of his movie roles.

1 Failed Tom Cruise Movie Franchise Proves His Star Power Better Than Top Gun & Mission Impossible
Posted: November 12, 2023 | Last updated: November 12, 2023
- Tom Cruise's star power was evident in the success of the Mission Impossible franchise, but his ability to draw audiences was also apparent in the box office numbers of the critically panned film, The Mummy.
- The Mummy, despite being a critical failure, grossed a significant amount of money thanks to Tom Cruise's star power. The film's box office success underscores the impact that he has, regardless of the quality of the movie.
- Even Tom Cruise's star power couldn't have saved Universal's Dark Universe. The Mummy's flaws extended beyond Cruise's performance, and the ambitious cinematic universe would have likely crumbled even if the film had been a success.
Tom Cruise is one of the biggest and most profitable actors in the film industry, and curiously enough, one failed movie franchise proves his star power better than his two most popular franchises. Tom Cruise’s acting career started in 1981 in the romantic drama Endless Love , but his big break arrived two years later when he got the lead role in the comedy film Risky Business . Tom Cruise became one of the most popular actors of the 1980s, and his biggest project during that decade was, without a doubt, Top Gun . Directed by Tony Scott, Top Gun boosted Cruise’s career thanks to his performance as Lt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and established Cruise as a highly profitable actor.
Tom Cruise’s success continued through the 1990s with movies like Days of Thunder , Interview with the Vampire , and Jerry Maguire , and in 1996, he played Ethan Hunt for the first time in Mission: Impossible . Since then, Cruise has starred in every movie in the Mission Impossible movie series to great success, further fueling his undeniable star power. However, one of the biggest proofs of Tom Cruise’s incredible star power is in a failed franchise, which had it succeeded, would have given Cruise’s career yet another massive boost.
The Mummy (2017) Grossed $410 Million (Despite Being Awful)
The Mission Impossible saga helped Cruise maintain his popularity through the 2000s and 2010s, leading to other big projects. Among them was 2017’s The Mummy , a reboot of the Mummy franchise directed by Alex Kurtzman. Cruise was cast as U.S. Army Sergeant Nick Morton, a soldier who accidentally unearths the ancient tomb of entrapped Egyptian princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella). When the princess is set free, Nick and company have to fight for their lives while also looking for a way to defeat the malevolent princess.
The Mummy was planned to be the first step in the creation of a modern cinematic universe based on Universal’s classic monsters, with plans for a remake of Bride of Frankenstein and 2014’s Dracula Untold being retrospectively considered to be the first movie in this new universe. Unfortunately, The Mummy was a critical failure, but its box office numbers didn’t really match the bad reviews.
Although The Mummy was a box-office bomb, it grossed $80.2 million domestically and $329.8 million overseas, which are big numbers for a movie that was destroyed by critics and general audiences. It’s safe to say that The Mummy ’s box office numbers are thanks to Tom Cruise’s star power, showing the impact that he has even if the movie isn’t good.
Not Even Tom Cruise Could Save Universal’s Dark Universe
Even if Tom Cruise’s star power saved The Mummy from truly embarrassing box office numbers, it still wouldn’t have been able to save Universal’s Dark Universe. The Mummy was criticized for its narrative tone, plot points setting up the Dark Universe, and lack of originality, and was labeled by critics as a “mess”. The Mummy would have set the tone for the rest of the Dark Universe, which had it carried on, would have been an even bigger mess and failure than The Mummy was. The problems of The Mummy go beyond Tom Cruise and his performance, and not even his popularity could have made Universal’s Dark Universe work as it was planned back then.

15 best tom cruise action movies (& where to stream them).
From Top Gun to the Mission: Impossible franchise, Tom Cruise has made a name for himself as one of Hollywood's most prominent action movie stars.
One of the things that made Tom Cruise such a bankable star is his versatility. He’s appeared in all kinds of movies across various genres. He’s given hilarious turns in comedies like Risky Business and Tropic Thunder , as well as engaging dramatic performances in classics like Rain Man and Born on the Fourth of July .
But arguably the genre that Cruise is most commonly associated with is action. From the aerial acrobatics of Top Gun to the increasingly daring stunts of the Mission: Impossible franchise, Cruise has starred in some awesome action movies over the years.
Updated on May 23rd, 2022 by Mark Birrell: As per Variety , Tom Cruise recently stated at the Cannes Film Festival that he never intends to release his movies straight to streaming, meaning that Top Gun: Maverick won't be available to stream for some time yet. However, there are plenty of the actor's other great action movies available right now.
Top Gun (1986)
Available to stream on netflix and paramount+.
Maverick’s debut in the first Top Gun movie solidified Tom Cruise’s place on the Hollywood A-list and his return to the role after over 35 years has shown that he's still at the top of it.
RELATED: 15 Best Movies Like Top Gun
While its jingoistic message has gained the movie a reputation as thinly veiled propaganda, Top Gun is an action movie classic anchored by palpable bromance and dazzling aerial set-pieces courtesy of legendary director Tony Scott.
Mission: Impossible III (2006)
Available to stream on showtime.
A decade after the original movie wowed audiences, Cruise brought on the then-freshman film director–and now renowned reboot maestro–J.J. Abrams to helm the Mission: Impossible franchise's third installment. Abrams then stayed on as a producer for the following sequels, with this entry sowing the seeds of what the movies are today.
Though it may not contain a death-defying centerpiece like later Mission: Impossible sequels, the action never stops flowing in this threequel and Philip Seymour Hoffman's Owen Davian is one of the best villains in the Mission: Impossible franchise .
Oblivion (2013)
Available to stream on hbo max.
A stylish sci-fi action thriller in the vein of classics like Logan's Run , Oblivion was the first collaboration between Tom Cruise and director Joseph Kosinski, with whom Cruise would reunite for Top Gun: Maverick .
Top Gun fans will find plenty of aerial action in the movie, but it's really the slick and detailed designs of the post-apocalyptic world that Cruise's character inhabits that are the main selling point.
War of the Worlds (2005)
Though a far cry from an alien invasion blockbuster like Independence Day , Steven Spielberg's adaptation of H.G. Wells' seminal sci-fi story is bursting with huge action spectacle.
Despite his character not being an action hero by any means, Cruise plays perfectly into his star persona as a struggling divorced dad trying to protect his kids in the midst of a global attack by a technologically superior species. Cruise's character may be more of a spectator to the action rather than a participant in it but the grounded perspective makes scenes like the tripod's first appearance simply unforgettable.
The Last Samurai (2003)
Available to stream on netflix.
This period epic, whilst not without its romanticized depictions of its subject matter, is a highly-regarded entry in Tom Cruise's list of action movies. Set in Japan in the late 19th century, the film follows Cruise's haunted and bitter former soldier as he's placed in the middle of a samurai rebellion.

The Last Samurai was nominated for 4 Oscars, including Best Supporting Actor for Cruise's main co-star, Ken Watanabe. However, the whole cast gives noteworthy performances, with Cruise fully leaning into a violent samurai movie aesthetic.
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)
Available to stream on fubotv and paramount+.
The fifth Mission: Impossible movie introduced a SPECTRE-like organization to rival the heroes' superheroic skills and a Blofeld-like mastermind to become the movie-series' first recurring villain, with writer and director Christopher McQuarrie going on to become the franchise's first recurring director also.
As Rogue Nation delivers its signature death-defying stunt in the opening scene, which features Cruise attached to the side of a real jet plane as it takes off, the movie is mostly a slightly more grounded affair than the other sequels in the franchise but nevertheless has nailbiting tension throughout and one of the best car chases of the 2010s .
Jack Reacher (2012)
Available to stream on amazon prime video and paramount+.
Before Christopher McQuarrie took over the Mission: Impossible franchise, he directed Cruise as the title character in Jack Reacher . Based on One Shot , the ninth book in Lee Child’s Reacher series, Jack Reacher follows its eponymous vigilante’s investigation into a former military sniper who shot a seemingly random group of people in broad daylight.
Even the negative reviews of Jack Reacher noted that Cruise gives an affable turn and that the action sequences, like the car chase, are wildly entertaining.
Knight And Day (2010)
Available to stream on amc+ and fubotv.
A blend of action thriller and romantic comedy, Knight and Day stars Cruise as a secret agent on a deadly mission and Cameron Diaz as a tourist who gets unwittingly swept up in his adventures.
The MacGuffin-driven plot can get a little confusing, but the movie is elevated by thrilling large-scale action scenes and spectacular chemistry between Cruise and Diaz.
Mission: Impossible (1996)
Available to stream on pluto tv and paramount+.
The sequels to Mission: Impossible have become all-out action extravaganzas. Like the Fast & Furious series, it’s an exercise in one-upmanship as each movie sets out to top the spectacle of the last. But the original 1996 film directed by Brian De Palma was a slick and semi-grounded spy thriller.
More in line with the tone of the original TV series, the first Mission: Impossible movie revolves around meticulously planned espionage operations. Ethan Hunt dangling from the ceiling of a high-security vault is one of the most iconic movie moments of all time.
American Made (2017)
Available to stream on fubotv.
It’s rare that a biopic falls into the category of action, but Doug Liman’s American Made has shootouts, police raids, and crash landings. It tells the outrageous life story of Barry Seal, a pilot who simultaneously worked for the CIA and Pablo Escobar.
Cruise gives a charming and hysterically funny turn as Seal, while Liman conceived, shot, and edited the movie in the fast-paced, rapid-cutting, style of Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas .
Edge Of Tomorrow (2014)
Available to rent on amazon prime video.
Much like the slasher movie Happy Death Day , Doug Liman's earlier collaboration with Tom Cruise, Edge of Tomorrow , incorporates another genre into the Groundhog Day “time loop” concept. Set in a future in which humanity is at war with alien invaders, Edge of Tomorrow sees Cruise’s soldier living the same day over and over again.
Based on Hiroshi Sakurazaka’s All You Need is Kill , Edge of Tomorrow is one of the most acclaimed sci-fi action thrillers of recent years though fans are still waiting for the sequel.
Collateral (2004)
Available to stream on hbo max.
Directed by Michael Mann, Collateral is a riveting LA-set noir film and a fascinating two-hander about the relationship between two diametrically opposed characters. Jamie Foxx plays an everyman taxi driver and Cruise plays a ruthless hitman who hires him to transport him to jobs across the city on one fateful night.
As usual, Mann brings sleek cinematic style to the proceedings and the tangible on-screen chemistry shared by Foxx and Cruise keeps their characters’ dynamic compelling.
Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)
Though the first three Mission: Impossible films were successful, Brad Bird's Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol was somewhat of a revamp for the franchise. This time, IMF operative Ethan Hunt is forced to go off the grid in his pursuit of a nuclear extremist.
RELATED: Tom Cruise's 10 Most Iconic Movie Quotes
The movie’s central set-piece, in which Hunt hangs off the facade of the Burj Khalifa, became one of the all-time great IMAX movie moments, still packing a punch on the smallest of screens. It's filled with breathtaking action sequences, like a foot chase through a sandstorm and a heist in the Kremlin.
Minority Report (2002)
Available to rent on apple tv.
Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report is both a high-stakes crime thriller and a thought-provoking sci-fi epic. Set in a dystopian future in which the police can predict crimes before they take place, Tom Cruise’s top cop is accused of a murder he has yet to commit.
With its ambiguous morals and futuristic portrayal of law enforcement, Minority Report is a quintessential sci-fi noir in the same fascinating category as fellow Philip K. Dick adaptation Blade Runner .
Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)
Available to stream on paramount+.
Acclaimed as one of the greatest action movies ever made by critics, Mission: Impossible – Fallout is by far the most thrilling, action-packed entry in the franchise so far.
Cruise stepped it up by doing death-defying stunts in practically every scene of Fallout . He dangled from a helicopter, jumped out of a plane, and rode a motorcycle the wrong way around the Arc de Triomphe. The movie's commitment to largely-in-camera spectacle puts it in a class above most big-budget Hollywood action movies of the past decade.
