How Tom Cruise Executed His 'Most Dangerous' Stunt in 'Mission: Impossible –Dead Reckoning Part One'

The death-defying moment in the franchise's seventh installment involves Cruise driving a motorbike off a cliff

Collection Christophel/Alamy

Tom Cruise  turned up the action for Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning   Part One .

While the film marks the seventh installment in the highly successful franchise, Cruise, 61, made the occasion even more special by challenging himself to perform one of his most dangerous stunts yet.

The death-defying moment involved Cruise driving a motorbike off a cliff, fly off the bike, and parachute to the ground. While fans got a glimpse of the stunt through the film's action-packed trailer in May, Cruise, along with writer-director  Christopher McQuarrie , first teased the big moment in 2021 at CinemaCon.

The pair explained in a special behind-the-scenes video at the event that the stunt took 500 hours of skydiving training and 13,000 motorbike jumps to get it just right. The stunt involved Cruise being attached to a set of wires as he rides a speeding motorcycle off of a large ramp before he throws himself from the bike, backed by the safety wires attached to his back.

Speaking about its execution, McQuarrie, 54, explained in the video that it was "by far the most dangerous stunt we've ever done." The clip then ended with Cruise performing the stunt himself, with a crew member saying, " Tom Cruise  rode a motorcycle off a cliff six times today."

McQuarrie "tried to kill me," joked Cruise at the New York City premiere.

Christian Black/Paramount Pictures

The film's long-awaited release comes after multiple delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic . According to an official synopsis, it finds Cruise's Ethan Hunt as he and his team are tasked with tracking down "a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity before it falls into the wrong hands."

During its world premiere in June , Cruise gave a speech about his passion for the franchise and filmmaking. He said in part, "It’s something that I grew up with, that made me and inspired me to dream and want to travel the world. My goal since I was little was to make movies and travel. And not just be a tourist but work in that world and understand their culture."

"Through my movies, I’ve been able to have that because everyone here has allowed me to entertain them," he continued. "It’s a privilege that I have never taken for granted."

Tom Cruise performs dangerous speed flying stunt for upcoming ‘Mission: Impossible’ film

Cruise said speed flying is "one of the most dangerous sports in the world."

Tom Cruise has pulled off another death-defying stunt.

In a video he shared on Thursday, the actor is seen speed flying off the side of a mountain in the United Kingdom’s Lake District for “Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One.”

He described it as “one of the most dangerous sports in the world.”

MORE: Tom Cruise thanks ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ fans while skydiving, appears in 'Mission: Impossible' sneak peek

Speed flying is similar to paragliding but uses a wing to fly fast hill descents. While paragliding happens through serene gliding and soaring, speed flying uses wings that are smaller than paragliders and includes high-speed travel, according to the British Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association .

“It’s a beautiful and delicate sport,” “Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning” director Christopher McQuarrie says in the video and explained how he and other filmmakers achieved filming dynamic shots for the highly-anticipated movie.

McQuarrie also shared some of the challenges that came with filming Cruise doing the stunt, which included figuring out where to place the cameras and developing their own gimbal system for the speed flyer, and weather elements.

“Filming next to rocks looks quite beautiful,” McQuarrie said. “Behind the scenes, we were in absolute terror.”

“It’s truly a one of a kind adventure,” he added.

Cruise is known for participating in his own crazy stunts for films. In December, a video of him in a helicopter right before jumping out of it was released to thank fans for “Top Gun: Maverick” while also telling fans about “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning.”

“As always, thank you for allowing us to entertain you,” Cruise says while free-falling. “It truly is the honor of a lifetime. Very lucky… See you at the movies!”

"Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One" will be released in theaters on July 12.

Tom Cruise shows off his speed flying stunt in "Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One"

Noted thrill-seeker Tom Cruise has been teasing his insane stunts in Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One since last year, when he thanked fans for seeing Top Gun: Maverick in theaters by jumping out of a plane .

With Dead Reckoning Part One ’s July 12 release quickly approaching, Cruise just deployed a new stunt video that might be his wildest yet. “It takes a true team effort to perform and film one of the most dangerous sports in the world—speed flying,” the actor tweeted on Thursday alongside the heart-pounding vid.

The clip opens with footage of Cruise spiraling downward through the air, affixed to a parachute, dangerously close to rocky mountain terrain.

“It’s a very beautiful and delicate sport,” Cruise says of speed flying. “We’re gonna do spirals, and we’re landing at an incredibly high speed, over 80 kilometers an hour.”

The scene was filmed, as Dead Reckoning director Christopher McQuarrie explains, via cameras affixed to people parachuting alongside Cruise.

The footage of Cruise running headlong off a cliff, attached only to that aforementioned parachute, is both cinematically stunning and harrowing, but not quite as harrowing as the motorcycle stunt he teased last year. In that already-iconic video, Cruise and the rest of the Mission: Impossible team explained the effort that went into filming the actor safely (we guess?!) driving a motorcycle off a cliff.

Cruise, by the way, shot the death-defying motorcycle stunt on the very first day of filming Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning.

“I was training and I was ready,” Cruise told Entertainment Tonight . “You have to be razor sharp when you’re doing something like that. It was very important as we were prepping the film that it was actually the first thing. I don’t want to drop that and go shoot other things and have my mind somewhere else. Everyone was prepped. Let’s just get it done.”

Spoken like the true savior of cinema .

The Navy Stopped Tom Cruise from Flying an Actual Jet in Top Gun: Maverick

He pilots a p-51 propeller-driven fighter plane and various other aircraft in the sequel..

Adele Ankers-Range Avatar

Tom Cruise was barred by the Navy from flying an actual F-18 Super Hornet jet in Top Gun: Maverick, even though he pilots several other aircraft in the sequel.

According to USA Today , Jerry Bruckheimer, who co-produced the original Top Gun, spoke to Empire Magazine about the long-awaited sequel. He hinted that fans can expect plenty of thrilling action sequences in the movie, as glimpsed in the trailers , with Cruise piloting a P-51 and various other helicopters and aircraft — bar Maverick's F-18 jet.

Apparently, Cruise put in a request to fly the Super Hornet but he was denied clearance by the Navy. Instead, IMAX cameras were installed inside the F-18 cockpits to shoot certain scenes while skilled Navy pilots took care of the actual flying, which Bruckheimer assures will give the experience of "what it's like to be in an F-18 in that cockpit with those pilots."

"When you're pulling heavy Gs, it compresses your spine, your skull. It makes some people delirious. Some people can't handle it," said Cruise, who, as a producer on the film, signed his co-stars up for intense training and aerial boot camp. "So I had to get them up to be able to sustain high Gs. Because they have to act in the plane. I can't have them sick the whole time."

Tron: Legacy and Oblivion's Joseph Kosinski directs the decades-later sequel, which sees Cruise reprising his role as Pete "Maverick" Mitchell. Now a flight instructor, Maverick must head back into the danger zone and confront his past while training a new squad of graduates for a perilous mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice.

Top Gun: Maverick will finally arrive in cinemas on November 19. Val Kilmer will be returning as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky alongside franchise newcomers Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, Jennifer Connelly, Glen Powell, and Miles Teller in a lead role . How to Dress Like Tom Cruise in ‘Mission Impossible’

IMF agent Ethan Hunt may play it fast and loose on missions, but his clothing is always on point.

The key to being a good movie spy is fitting in no matter the surroundings, so it makes sense that the key to good movie spy style is looking good no matter the sartorial situation. The ability to look good in a variety of outfits is a big part of what makes movie spies like Ethan Hunt, Tom Cruise ‘s character in the Mission Impossible films, fashion icons.

Over 22 years and six films, including the soon-to-be-released Mission Impossible: Fallout , Cruise has rocked suits, tactical gear, tuxedos, and plenty of leather jackets while playing Hunt. As one of the best-dressed characters in one of the most successful franchises in movie history, Hunt’s style should inspire all guys who want to look their best. The fact that Cruise is 56 with three kids means that dads in particular should take notice.

Here are some of our favorite pieces from the recent Mission Impossible films that can up any dad’s style game.

The Hooded Leather Jacket from Ghost Protocol

tom cruise wing suit

Hunt’s hooded silhouette has become a recurring image over the past few Mission Impossible films, and this jacket is a sterling example. The hood, which helped keep the Impossible Mission Force’s leader incognito as he slipped in and out of dangerous situations, will also help keep you warm and dry on late night diaper runs.

The Persol Sunglasses from Ghost Protocol

These classic Persol shades worn by Tom Cruise in Ghost Protocol kept the sun (and sand) out of his eyes when he was sprinting around Dubai. But their classic silhouette works well during any moment. These, after all, come from the brand who gave Steve McQueen his effortless cool.

The Tudor Heritage Chrono Watch from Ghost Protocol

A great watch is one of the most versatile pieces you can own. Cruise rocks this one with white pants and a dark button down, but it would look just as great with a suit or tuxedo. At nearly five grand, it’s definitely an investment, but if you’re in the market for a quality timepiece you could do a lot worse for a lot more money.

The Tacky Shirt from Rogue Nation

tom cruise wing suit

The costume designer made this shirt Cruise wears from fabric she found in east London, so unfortunately you won’t be able to wear the exact shirt. Nevertheless, the lesson is clear: if worn with confidence (and a great pair of dark pants), nicely patterned floral shirt can do wonders. We dig this one from H&M.

The Grey Suit from Rogue Nation

tom cruise wing suit

The suit, worn by Cruise as he clings to that airplane in the beginning of Rogue One, was custom-made with reinforced seams that could withstand such intense wind. This Armani suit is a close copy. Just know that it will likely rip if you spend time hanging from a fuselage.

The Leather Jacket from Rogue Nation

tom cruise wing suit

This jacket, which Cruise wears for the majority of Rogue Nation , is all about the texture. Purposely textured to appear as though it has wrinkles, the jacket, made by Barney’s has a well-worn, timeless feel.

Tom Cruise's Tailoring Always Made A Statement

This week's Style Archive remembers the Hollywood stalwart's reign as the prince of pattern

Headshot of Olivia Ovenden

Style Archive: a series in which we celebrate the stars of the past that made menswear what it is today. This week: the experimental tailoring of Tom Cruise.

Before Tom Cruise's sofa-hurdling declaration of love, before he became a recipient of the Scientology Freedom Medal of Valor, and before he made it a contractual obligation that films he appears in feature 155 minutes of green screen minimum , Tom Cruise was the king of cool.

But while much has been made of the early promise of his acting career - appearing in the likes of Top Gun, Risky Business and The Colour of Money in quick succession - less attention has been paid to his sartorial selections at the time.

Admittedly wearing a suit to a smart occasion is not reinventing the wheel, but a glance at Cruise's outfit archives show the actor experimenting with pattern and colour, eschewing drab monochrome suiting in a way that's stood the test of time.

Madonna and Sean Penn Wedding - August 16, 1985 - Arrivals

At the 1985 wedding of Sean Penn and Madonna — held at a clifftop mansion in Malibu, naturally — Cruise teamed a boxy, charcoal suit with a yellow and gold medallion-print shirt, and the black aviators he'd made his signature look in Top Gun .

Sure, grainy photographs of thirty years ago always look cooler than filtered selfies, but Harry Dean Stanton rocked up to the same nuptials in a multicoloured tie, while Christopher Walken sported a three-inch quiff. This is about more than huffing the nostalgia pipe.

"The Color of Money" New York Premiere - October 8, 1986

The following year, at the New York premiere of The Colour of Money, Cruise wore a blue patterned two-piece suit, a pop of decoration which stood out against Paul Newman and Martin Scorsese's muted grey tailoring.

Cruise was hitting his stride in Hollywood in '86, a devilishly handsome 24-year-old making smart choices about which films to be part of, and his fashion choices at the time have aged just as well.

Stars at Premiere of The Color of Money

Whether it's the aforementioned sunglasses, a belt with silver fastenings to break up a patterned suit, or a Western bolo tie to add some personality to a pinstripe two-piece, the accents on the outfit help him dress with personality without descending into fancy dress.

Tom Cruise And Mimi Rogers

As such, a dinner with his first wife Mimi Rogers and Madonna saw Cruise rock up in a white linen suit jacket - more likely an indication of his own taste than something he was instructed to throw on. This show of personal style is is exceedingly rare nowadays, when most celebrities carefully curate their every outfit to bolster their public image.

"The Color of Money" Los Angeles Premiere - October 14, 1986

Looking at photos of Cruise during his ascendence to stardom offers a nice time capsule, the fun years before the glow of the media got a little too bright. His penchant for spicy suits tailed off somewhere in the mid-Nineties, opting instead for more classic tailoring on the red carpet. Still, we'll always have that blue suit.

Tom Cruise Is Wearing a Bunch of Rare $8,000 Suits Right Now

By Jake Woolf

Image may contain Clothing Apparel Tie Accessories Accessory Suit Coat Overcoat Human Person and Fashion

Isaia is a brand synonymous with excellent suits. The Napoli-based company's signature coral lapel pin is basically a calling card for any guy to announce that he's currently stunting in some seriously well-made—and pricey—tailoring. Tom Cruise , meanwhile, is one of the most famous men on planet Earth and one of the most successful actors of all time. So it makes sense that these icons of their respective crafts have come together on Cruise's recent press tour for Jack Reacher 2 .

But when you're Tom-Freaking-Cruise, off-the-rack suits won't cut it—even if they're made by one of Italy's best tailoring houses. Hell, a bespoke suit made of the brand's proprietary fabric isn't even enough. No, when you're Tom Cruise, only Isaia's Solo Otto suits will do. The program is like made-to-measure on steroids, utilizing fabric so rare that only enough yardage is made to produce eight suits. After that, the finely woven yarns are decommissioned and moved into the archives for good, never to be reissued again.

This week, Cruise stepped out in a navy blue, soft-shouldered suit (below) made of the label's 14.5 Selection fabric, the name of which alludes to its 14.5-micron-sized Australian merino thread. According to the brand, "the diameter of a red blood cell is equal to 8 microns, while that of a hair varies between 65 and 78 microns." Translation: These threads are fine—in every sense of the word. Simply put, Cruise has been parading around red carpets this week in a suit made of threads that are way thinner than the hairs on your head.

As you might imagine, with this kind of rarity comes a hefty price tag, and the fully lined suit like Cruise's from the Solo Otto collection costs over $8,000. But even if you can't afford this specific suit (or even one of Isaia's $4,000 off-the-rack models), there's an important lesson to be learned: In a menswear world where suits aren't king of the hill anymore, it's important to make each tailoring choice as memorable as possible. Memorability can come via the pattern of the suit, the fit, the quality, or all of the above. At Cruise's age, the best bet is to keep one's swerves tame, regardless of price (hence the subtle check-pattern navy suit). And while we can't speak for him, we know we'd get some sense of internal joy in knowing our suit is one of only eight in the entire world. That's the kind of thing that can make any guy feel like a star, and it's why suiting up is still the easiest way to look one's best.

Mission Impossible Style: Tom Cruise Suit Guide by Tom's Fashion

The IMF agent Ethan Hunt may seem struggling on missions, but his clothing is always on point. As a part of playing a leading role in one of the most successful franchises in movie history, Cruise did every bit of justice, not only with his acting but by also fitting in the surroundings in a variety of outfits apt for his spy character.

Tom Cruise’s style is usually defined as elegant with a sexy, masculine edge. It’s indeed very classic. The Mission Impossible 6- Fallout actor was another platform where Cruise rocked suits, tuxedos, and plenty of leather jackets while playing Hunt.

Here are a few of our favorite picks from his latest movie Mission Impossible Fallout:

Tom Cruise makes a case for the old school tux at the Top Gun: Maverick premiere

By Zak Maoui

Top Gun Maverick premiere Tom Cruise

Attending the UK Top Gun: Maverick premiere in London's buzzy Leicester Square, Tom Cruise opted to wear a form-fitting traditional navy blue tuxedo from Italian fashion house Brioni.

Once upon a time, the red carpet was awash with men in perfectly-tailored three-piece suits and double-breasted numbers courtesy of the finest Savile Row tailors (Hardy Amies, Gieves and Hawkes et al). Today it tends to  an arena where men battle it out in the most outlandish fits possible.

Take for instance the string of big awards ceremonies earlier this year: at the Sag Awards Kid Cudi dazzled in crystal-embellished Louis Vuitton ; for the Oscars Wesley Snipes took a left-turn and slipped into a dress-suit and leggings; while for last week's BAFTA TV awards a bleached-brow Olly Alexander slipped into a witchy Saint Laurent look and sky-high boots. In 2022 anything goes and the more daring, the better.

But the 59-year old Cruise's safer sartorial move was a reminder that a good old-fashioned tux is never a bad idea. Cut within an inch of its life to Cruise's 5'5" frame and complemented with a black satin bow tie, as well as the actor's perfectly coiffed and oiled 'do, the suit was, while by no means anything out of the ordinary, refreshing to see.

Cruise's decision to opt for a more traditional fit was echoed elsewhere too. Prince William stuck to what he knows best and wore a tailored Alexander McQueen dinner suit, which he finished off neatly with a pair of Crockett & Jones loafers that had "F-18" stitched on them – a nod to the fighter jets in Top Gun, as well as William's earlier flying career as a East Anglian Air Ambulance pilot. Meanwhile Jon Hamm, who plays Cyclone in the film, went for a white tuxedo, tapered black trousers and a black bow tie, which he finished off with a dazzling Hollywood smile.

And while we're all about hot-tot-trot pieces that have come straight off the catwalk, a traditional tuxedo is something we reckon you should try should you not be willing to bleach your brows and wear something a little more out there – à la the aforementioned Alexander – for your next formal event. The ultimate choice, of course, would be a bespoke dinner suit from a Savile Row tailor such as Anderson & Sheppard or Huntsman, or indeed, as Cruise has demonstrated, Italian masters of tailoring, Brioni.

Tom Cruise did that motorcycle stunt in ‘Mission: Impossible’ on Day 1 — here’s why

More than half a year before the release of the upcoming movie “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One,” Paramount Pictures made sure audiences got to see Tom Cruise once again risking his life.

Cruise’s mind-blowing stunts have become a signature of “ Mission: Impossible ” films, each one seemingly topping the next. The key stunt in the franchise’s seventh installment involves Cruise driving a motorcycle off the edge of a cliff, dismounting and parachuting into a Norwegian valley. With the drop of its behind-the-scenes footage in December , the studio billed it as “the biggest stunt in cinema history.”

Though the moment has already been watched on YouTube more than 13 million times, and 30 million more times in the film’s trailers, it’s among the film’s most anticipated scenes. After all, we still don’t know how the stunt fits within the plot — What could be so dire that agent Ethan Hunt must jump off a cliff?

While answers won’t come until the movie’s theatrical release July 12, we now know that the risky stunt was the first thing Cruise did on Day 1 of filming, which began in 2020. And it was all about risk assessment.

In a recent interview with “Entertainment Tonight,” Cruise said they started with the scene, in part, to allow the cast and crew to see whether he would be able to star in the $290-million film. After all, he could either get injured or die — or both.

“Well, we know we’re either going to continue with the film or not,” Cruise said, letting out a laugh. “Let’s know Day 1, what is gonna happen: Do we all continue, or is it a major re-run?”

Cruise added that he wanted to make sure his mind was clear enough to focus solely on the stunt.

Week 13: ‘Mission: Impossible — Fallout’ director Christopher McQuarrie joins a live chat from London about the blockbuster franchise.

Aug. 4, 2020

“You have to be razor sharp for something like that; I don’t want to drop that and shoot other things and have my mind somewhere else,” Cruise said. “You don’t want to be waking up in the middle of the night, ‘It’s still, I still, I still,’ and it has that effect.”

Cruise is no stranger to aerial stunts with a high probability of death. The “Top Gun” actor said preparing for the recent stunt “was years of planning,” a culmination of all the training he’s done with motorcycles, cars and aerobatics.

In the franchise’s last film, “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” (2018), Cruise jumped into a helicopter in midflight , taking the controls to chase another helicopter. In the same movie, he parachuted from a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III from 25,000 feet, close to five miles up, becoming “the first actor” to do so in a major motion picture, according to Paramount (most skydiving attempts occur at 10,000 feet).

In 2011 for “ Ghost Protocol ,” the “Jerry McGuire” actor climbed along the exposed walls of the world’s largest building, the Burj Khalifa of Dubai. And in 2015 for “Rogue Nation,” Cruise hung off the side of an Airbus A400M Atlas as it was taking off, a stunt that veteran stunt coordinator and frequent Cruise collaborator Wade Eastwood called “a stressful experience.”

tom cruise wing suit

The recent motorcycle stunt, which Cruise had apparently repeated six times, was no exception. Though the film’s computer-generated images make Cruise appear to be jumping off the rocky surface of the cliff, the scene required a large ramp to be built.

While Cruise is seen atop the motorcycle in the behind-the-scenes video, accelerating off the ramp, a helicopter and drone fly overhead to gather footage. The film’s crew, including director Christopher McQuarrie, are huddled in a nearby tent, faces glued to a set of monitors. After he abandons the bike and hangs in the open air, Cruise releases his parachute and the crew erupts in cheers.

“The only thing you have to avoid when doing a stunt like this are serious injury or death,” Eastwood, who has managed stunts for the last three “Mission Impossible” films, said in the BTS video. “You’re falling. If you don’t get a clean exit from the bike and you get tangled up with it, if you don’t open your parachute, you’re not gonna make it.”

The scene wasn’t the only stressful one to shoot: Cruise said he also worried about a car chase that involved him handcuffed to a small car, steering with one hand while drifting along the cobblestone streets of Rome, with his co-star Hayley Atwell in the passenger seat.

“It’s plenty of challenges,” Cruise said with a wide grin, laughing once again.

“Dead Reckoning” had its world premiere Sunday at the Auditorium Conciliazione in Rome with Cruise and other cast members, including Atwell and Vanessa Kirby , in attendance. “Part Two” is expected to be released in June 2024. Filming wrapped in September for what has been rumored to be Cruise’s final appearance in the “Mission: Impossible” franchise.

Tom Cruise Debuts Stunning Hair Transformation After Confirmation He Wears Wigs

' src=

Tom Cruise ‘s every move sparks a conversation.

The fast-moving actor has the media talking about his deep ties to the Church of Scientology, his dating life, and his unique relationships with his two oldest children, Connor Cruise and Isabella “Bella” Cruise .

Tom Cruise has spilled a lot of ink because of his rift with his daughter, Suri Cruise , since his divorce from Katie Holmes .

The legendary filmmaker and risk-taker also has tongues wagging when he changes his looks.

Questions have arisen about the possibility of him using fillers or plastic surgeries to maintain his youthful looks.

Recently, Tom Cruise debuted his hair transformation, which sparked a debate about his usage of wigs.

It also reminded the world that he is very protective of his luscious mane.

In photos obtained by The Daily Mail , Tom Cruise was seen arriving in London by private jet from Florida.

Upon landing at the British airport, Tom Cruise hopped into a helicopter “to head to filming Mission Impossible 8 ,” according to the media outlet.

The casually dressed actor sported longer and lighter hair. Tom Cruise, who is known for a more classy haircut, opted for shaggy locks that appeared to be dyed honey blonde or brown.

Fans and critics were quick to share their thoughts on Cruise’s new look, with many saying they did not like it.

Others said he looks handsome with the layered bowl cut, and a few said it might be a wig for his new movie.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Tom Cruise Fanpage (@_cruise_62)

In a recent interview, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One director Christopher McQuarrie revealed that Tom Cruise sometimes wears wigs.

McQuarrie said that Cruise wore wigs “due to their reshoots schedule” and added: “The one I absolutely love is Ethan and Hailey [ Atwell ] when he says goodbye to her at the end. And she says, ‘Go.’ That shot was shot two years later than the shots on either side of it. Originally they had a different piece of behavior that, in the course of the new ending of the movie, it just didn’t work…”

He went on to say: “Tom’s wearing a wig in that shot because he’s got his [Part Two] hair. So keep in mind that any pickups and reshoots that we did after we started shooting Part Two, Tom’s got a different hairstyle. He’s wearing a wig in a lot of the movie. In the [food delivery scene] he’s wearing a wig. And it’s a sensational wig by our amazing makeup department.”

It was also revealed that Tom Cruise is very protective of his hair and does not like people touching it.

The Thing reported: “In 2017, while Cruise was promoting The Mummy in Australia’s The Project, a hair and makeup artist was told to “step away” from him. The show’s employee “attempted to tame” one of the actor’s messy strands when his assistant said, “No, no, no, no,” because his staff members are “never allowed” to touch his hair except “in privacy, like when his own glam team does his hair.”

Mr. Cruise makes a lot of efforts when it comes to his appearance.

Mission: impossible must copy tom cruise's $1.4 billion hit to properly replace ethan hunt.

The Mission: Impossible franchise should establish a clear Ethan Hunt protégé in its next film, similar to Cruise's potential replacements in Top Gun.

WARNING: SPOILERS ahead for Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning.

  • Mission: Impossible 8's delay to 2025 allows the franchise to plan for a future without Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt.
  • The film could introduce new characters to eventually replace Cruise and ensure the franchise's longevity.
  • Hayley Atwell's Grace character is a potential candidate to take over as the franchise lead, but Mission: Impossible may need a star with more established action credentials.

With Mission: Impossible 8 being delayed to 2025, there could be more time for the celebrated action franchise to figure out its future without Tom Cruise's Ethan Hunt. While Cruise's incredible passion for his action franchises Mission: Impossible and Top Gun remains essentially unmatched in today's Hollywood, the larger-than-life actor will eventually be forced to part ways with his leading man stunt-heavy status in due time. Cruise, now 61 years old, can't realistically be jumping off cliffs on motorbikes or hanging onto the sides of planes in his 70s, even though he has shown no signs of slowing down his momentum .

Tom Cruise is slated to star in at least one more Mission: Impossible movie, which was retitled from Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part One to an unknown title. Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning brought back some of the elements of the original 1996 action thriller while also laying the foundation for a climactic full-circle finish in Mission: Impossible 8 . It seems like a Mission: Impossible movie couldn't exist without Cruise's iconic Ethan Hunt character at the forefront, but Mission: Impossible 8 may establish a changing of the guard to ensure the continued longevity of the celebrated action franchise.

All 9 Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning Stunts & Fight Scenes, Ranked

Top gun: maverick is the blueprint for mission: impossible to replace tom cruise, maverick introduced rooster and hangman as possible replacements.

Cruise's Mission: Impossible franchise could follow a similar blueprint to Top Gun: Maverick by introducing its new potential franchise leads in Mission: Impossible 8 . While Top Gun: Maverick was still very much about Cruise's iconic Maverick character, the blockbuster movie simultaneously brought in Rooster and Hangman as possible replacements to take over the franchise without Cruise in the lead role. Mission Impossible could follow this strategy in order to make the transition from Cruise's Ethan Hunt to another protagonist very smooth and natural, an approach that could have already worked with several previous Mission: Impossible supporting cast members.

Hypothetically speaking, just because Ethan Hunt or Maverick aren't the only main protagonists in the next Mission: Impossible and Top Gun movies, respectively, does not mean that Cruise can't have major oversight and influence on his beloved franchises in other ways. Over time, Cruise will naturally pump the brakes on his remarkable appetite for doing his own stunts, which will likely finally happen when his body cannot physically match the level of his ambitious visions for the film. When that day comes, Cruise will be forced to pass the baton to new leading actors, but can still use his creative abilities and continue to shape his two major franchises.

Mission: Impossible 8 Can Beat Maverick With A New Tom Cruise Stunt Before Top Gun 3

Mission: impossible hasn't properly introduced a tom cruise replacement (yet), rebecca ferguson could've been it, but ilsa's death makes that impossible.

Back in 2011 with the release of Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol , Jeremy Renner seemed poised to take over for Cruise's Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise. Renner made his last appearance as William Brandt in 2015's Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation , but has essentially disappeared from the franchise since, failing to appear in 2018's Fallout and 2023's Dead Reckoning . Renner, now 53 and likely exhausted from action franchises, was also teased to take over the Bourne franchise from Matt Doman with 2012's The Bourne Legacy , a prospect that also never came to fruition.

Prior to her surprising death in Dead Reckoning , Rebecca Ferguson's Ilsa Faust could have been the best available candidate to take over for Ethan Hunt but that option is now an impossibility. Henry Cavill, who starred in Fallout alongside Cruise, would have also been a natural option before his character betrayal of Ethan Hunt and subsequent death, which also writes him out of the picture. With virtually no other supporting characters that could take over for Ethan Hunt in future installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise, the 2025 film would be wise to introduce a new, highly viable Cruise replacement.

Dead Reckoning Kills Every Mission: Impossible 8 Returning Character Theory

Mission: impossible 8 could set up the franchise's tom cruise replacement, grace could be a candidate, but mission: impossible needs more star power.

As it currently stands, Hayley Atwell's Grace character is the best option to take the reins from Ethan Hunt as the franchise lead. Atwell has been celebrated for her role as Peggy Carter in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and would certainly be a recognizable name to lead the Mission: Impossible franchise. However, filling the massive shoes of Tom Cruise as the franchise's first honest protagonist replacement is no easy feat and may be better suited to an action star with a more established footing. If Mission: Impossible 8 introduces a new supporting character with franchise-leading potential, it may be pointing to the end of the Tom Cruise-Ethan Hunt era that has nearly spanned three decades.

Mission: Impossible 8

Mission: Impossible 8 is the direct sequel to Dead Reckoning - Part One and is the eighth film in the Mission: Impossible franchise. Said to be the final film, Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and more will reprise their roles in Ethan Hunt's IMF team as they face off against a dangerous foe from their past.
