Manchester Airport 'hoping to run entirely scheduled operation' after travel chaos

The airport said on Sunday it was "in the process of resuming operations" and flights scheduled for today "should be unaffected".

Flights are departing from Manchester Airport's two main terminals after a "major power cut" caused travel chaos for passengers.

The airport said in a post on X on Sunday afternoon that it was "in the process of resuming operations" and flights scheduled for today "should be unaffected".

Earlier on Sunday, the facility had said all flights from Terminals 1 and 2 were cancelled "until further notice" and passengers were advised not to come to the site.

Travellers due to fly from Terminal 3 were largely unaffected.

It was understood the power outage hit the airport only, after it was initially thought to have affected a wider surrounding area.

Passengers already inside the airport faced huge delays, with images showing huge queues of people.

There were instances where some people's baggage was not on flights.

Chris Woodroofe, Manchester Airport's managing director, apologised for the chaos, saying a "fault with a cable had caused a power surge that took down security systems and baggage screening".

He stated "about 20% of our flights have been cancelled so far", adding: "Tomorrow (Monday) we are very much hoping to run an entirely scheduled operation."

Mr Woodroofe said an investigation into what happened was set to take place.

Holidaymaker Lindsay Mitchell was hopeful she and her family would be able to fly to Turkey later on Sunday for a trip that had been planned for a year.

She was due to go with her husband, daughter, son, her son's girlfriend, her daughter's boyfriend, her nieces, her sister, and her two granddaughters.

Ms Mitchell told Sky News: "We were advised this morning not to travel to Manchester Airport but we'd thought we'd chance it as our flight's not until teatime, fingers crossed."

She added: "You have got to make the best of a bad situation. It's not the airline's fault, it's not Manchester Airport's fault, it's no one's fault, it's just one of those freaky things that happen in everyday life."

Another passenger, Hayden Lewis, said his flight to the Greek island of Skiathos was cancelled after he was in the airport for about five hours.

He later went to Birmingham Airport after being dropped off by his father and was hopeful of getting to his holiday destination.

Mr Lewis told Sky News: "Our flight got cancelled after being in the airport for about five hours. Left with no idea when they [the airline] could get us there, so we have taken it into our own hands and are now in Birmingham Airport going to the right destination.

"We were going to Skiathos for nine nights. We travelled from Halifax to Manchester. We are now in Birmingham thanks to my dad who collected us from Manchester and dropped us in Birmingham. All because easyJet don't know when they could get us back out but want us to keep checking the app (along with the thousands of others)."

A number of arriving flights were forced to divert to other airports.

One Singapore Airlines flight arriving from Houston in Texas had to go to London Heathrow while another, which came in from Singapore, was forced to land at London Gatwick.

An Etihad Airways flight from Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport was diverted to Birmingham Airport.

Live updates as Manchester Airport hit by severe delays and cancellations following power cut

The airport said T1 and T2 were being badly hit by the disruption

People standing around outside a terminal at Manchester Airport

A “significant” number of flights from Manchester Airport are expected to be delayed or cancelled after a “major power cut”.

In a social media post on Sunday morning, the airport said the “widespread disruption” was particularly affecting departures from terminals one and two. It advised passengers due to travel from those terminals to contact their airlines for up-to-date information.

Those due to fly from terminal three are told to go to the airport as normal, unless advised otherwise by their airline, but could be affected by delays. The airport said: “We apologise for any inconvenience and aim to restore normal service as soon as possible.”

Airport gives 'final update'

Manchester Airport has provided a "final update" on the disruption today, along with an apology to customers who saw their flights cancelled.

They said: "Tomorrow's schedule is expected to run as usual with no further disruption so passengers should plan to travel to the airport as normal, checking in two hours ahead of their flight for short-haul, and three hours for long-haul. It is always advisable to check the status of your flight before you travel to the airport.

"Airlines will be in touch with passengers to rearrange cancelled flights as we work with airlines, their baggage handling agents and other partners to make sure passengers whose bags did not make it onto their flights are reunited with their belongings as soon as possible.

We thank passengers for their patience today and we would also like to thank all of our staff, airlines and onsite partners for their hard work and resilience."

Check-in and departures have now fully resumed

Check-in and departures have now fully resumed at Manchester Airport, a spokesman said.

In a statement on the airport website, they added: "Passengers due to travel during the remainder of today are advised to check with their airlines before coming to the airport as there is a possibility of a small number of further cancellations as airlines finalise their schedules for tomorrow.

"Further disruption is not anticipated tomorrow so passengers expecting to travel should plan to come to the airport as usual, in line with the advice from their airline. This is usually to arrive two hours before a short-haul flight and three hours before a long-haul flight. As always, it is worth checking the status of your flight before you set off.

"We apologise for the disruption passengers have faced today. We will work with airlines as they reschedule cancelled flights and we'll work closely with airlines, baggage handling agents and other partners to make sure any passengers whose flights departed without their baggage are reunited with their belongings as soon as possible.

"We thank passengers for their patience and our resilience team and customer service colleagues for their hard work."

'It's a hell of a mess'

Lara Rimmer, 30, is currently at the airport and was supposed to fly to Cyprus. Instead she is stuck in the airport surrounded by "hundreds of bags" that haven't gone on flights.

She said: "We’re watching the staff trying to manually sort them all. I feel sorry for the staff, hell of a mess they’re having to sort out

"There's lots of people waiting around."

Flights to resume this afternoon and evening

Here is what bosses have said as flights are set to resume later today

Flights to resume at Manchester Airport

Manchester Airport has issued an update telling travellers that flights will resume tonight.

On the airport's Twitter account , a spokesman said: "Following the power outage earlier today that caused disruption to Terminals 1 and 2, we are now in the process of resuming operations and expect flights to restart during the remainder of this afternoon and this evening.

"It remains important that passengers check with their airlines before travelling to the airport.

"We are alsow orking closely with airlines to reschedule cancelled flights in the coming days. Flights scheduled for tomorrow should be unaffected and passengers due to travel should plan to come to the airport as usual.

Anyone who has been affected by the disruption and needs adjust their travel arrangements is asked to visit the Manchester Airport website.

Manchester Airport resumes flights after cancellation chaos at two terminals

Manchester Airport has started resuming operations after cancelling all fights from two of its three terminals due to a power cut this morning.

Passengers departing from Terminals 1 and 2 had been told to stay away until further notice after a power outage impacted ‘important systems’.

Now the airport is starting to resume flights this afternoon, but it advised passengers to check with their airlines before travelling to the airport.

The process of resuming operations will continue into the evening, according to the airport, which expects tomorrow’s flights to run as normal.

Sorry, this video isn't available any more.

In a statement, Manchester Airport said: ‘Following the power outage earlier today that caused disruption to Terminals 1 and 2, we are now in the process of resuming operations and expect flights to restart during the remainder of this afternoon and evening.

‘It remains important that passengers check with their airlines before travelling to the airport.

‘We are also working closely with airlines to reschedule cancelled flights in the coming days.

‘Flights scheduled for tomorrow should be unaffected and passengers due to travel should plan to come to the airport as usual.

‘We thank passengers for their patience and our resilience team and customer service colleagues for their hard work.’

What’s happened at Manchester Airport?

Today’s power outage affected the processing of boarding cards and baggage screening, leading to long queues, a backlog at Border Control, and luggage piled up in the airport.

Manchester Airport had initially advised passengers to check with airlines before arriving.

But, despite power being restored, it later urged them to stay away until further notice as only flights for which passengers were already checked-in would be departing.

Some flights arriving at Terminals 1 and 2 have also been diverted due to the chaos caused by the power outage.

But a backlog meant some passengers flew off without their luggage as it had not made it to the planes.

Airlines will organise any onward journey for those whose flights are cancelled.

Terminal 3 has remained running, but passengers flying from there have been warned they might still face delays.

Announcing the cancellation of flights earlier, the airport said: ‘Manchester Airport was affected by a significant power cut in the early hours of this morning.

‘Power has been restored but the outage affected important systems, including the processing of boarding cards and baggage screening, which has caused significant delays, particularly in Terminals 1 and 2.

‘ All flights from Terminals 1 and 2 are being cancelled until further notice and passengers due to travel from those terminals are advised not to come to the airport and to stay in touch with their airlines.

‘Passengers due to fly from Terminal 3 should come to the airport as normal unless advised otherwise by their airline but could be affected by delays.

‘Flights for those passengers already checked-in are departing but are subject to delays. The disruption means some baggage may not be on those flights.

‘We will work with airlines and handling partners to reunite affected passengers with their luggage as soon as possible.

‘Some arriving flights are being diverted to other airports meaning people due to pick passengers up from the airport should check before setting out.

‘We thank passengers for their patience and our resilience team and customer service colleagues for their hard work.

‘We apologise for the inconvenience and are working hard to restore normal service as soon as possible.’

Inside Manchester Airport after a massive power cut causes all flights to be cancelled or delayed

easyJet, which operates flights from terminal one, said there are ‘very long queues’ for security and disruption to hold bag processing, meaning passengers can only board flights with cabin luggage.

It said: ‘Although outside of our control, we would like to apologise for any inconvenience experienced as a result.

‘We are doing all we can and working closely with the airport team to minimise the disruption.’

The disruption comes at the start of the busy summer holiday season at the UK’s third-busiest airport.

EasyJet will launch its first-ever flights to City of Derry airport in Northern Ireland from November, with links from Edinburgh and Liverpool .

Neither route is currently served, and they will improve access both to Derry itself and the wider region of northwest Ireland, including County Donegal in the Republic .

Initially flights will run only on Mondays and Fridays. The airline says one-way fares start at £18, though The Independent has so far been unable to verify prices on the easyJet website.

Ali Gayward, easyJet’s UK country manager, said: “We are proud to be the largest airline in Northern Ireland and by expanding our network we are providing our customers in Northern Ireland even greater choice and UK connectivity.”

Steve Frazer, managing director at City of Derry airport, said: “EasyJet brings an undeniable level of brand credibility and customer confidence, not to mention great value fares for travellers across our catchment area.”

Many passengers have complained about high fares on Loganair’s small aircraft, which currently serve London Heathrow and Glasgow.

In addition, Ryanair flies from Manchester and Birmingham. The Irish airline dropped its link from London Stansted to City of Derry many years ago.

Brenda Morgan, the airport’s head of business development, said: “Services to Edinburgh and Liverpool have been in demand from both corporate and leisure travellers in the Northwest.”

Links from Derry’s airport on Loganair (red), Ryanair (blue) and easyJet (orange)

The airline schedule analyst Sean Moulton said: “Edinburgh and Liverpool are two of the most demanded routes from Derry.

“Ryanair served these pre-Covid, and Loganair operated the two until 2023.

“EasyJet will be the third scheduled airline and Derry will now have links to six destinations in Great Britain. This enhanced connectivity will bring families and friends closer together, and could also boost investment and growth in northwest Northern Ireland.”

The routes will run year-round. Airport bosses hope the frequency will increase from two per week – with possible expansion to easyJet’s biggest base, London Gatwick.

The domestic flights cover 161 miles from the Scottish capital and 211 miles from the Merseyside airport.

EasyJet already serves Belfast International (46 miles away) and George Best Belfast City (59 miles).

EasyJet Adds Derry To Network With Liverpool, Edinburgh Flights

city of Derry Airport arrivals

EasyJet will add the City of Derry Airport (LDY) in Northern Ireland to its network in November, becoming the third airline to offer scheduled services at the airport.

From Nov. 4, easyJet will launch year-round flights from LDY to both Liverpool, England, and Edinburgh, Scotland. Both routes will be flown 2X-weekly and are exclusive to the airline, which is an all-Airbus A320-family aircraft operator.

“The new routes will … serve demand for domestic connectivity between Northern Ireland and key cities across the UK,” easyJet said in a statement.

Loganair currently offers 3X-weekly service between LDY and London Heathrow Airport, and is also operating 4X-weekly flights during the summer season between LDY and Glasgow, Scotland. Those routes are being flown with Embraer ERJ-145 aircraft.

Ryanair in April opened year-round service between LDY and Birmingham, England, operating 2X-weekly flights with a Boeing 737-800 aircraft. The ULCC also operates 2X-weekly flights between LDY and Manchester, England.

“Services to Edinburgh and Liverpool have been in demand from both corporate and leisure travelers in the northwest [of Northern Ireland],” said Brenda Morgan, LDY’s head of business development. She noted both easyJet routes will be flown on Fridays and Mondays, “fantastic timings for business travel during the week and weekend breaks for the leisure market.”

The airport currently does not have service to Dublin. LDY views gaining a connection to the Irish capital a priority.
