Laos & Thailand Adventure

thailand laos tours

Bring the whole family on this active adventure through Laos and Thailand, which includes a Mekong River cruise. Go Kayaking, hiking and ziplining, meet elephants and rescued bears, island hop through the Phang Nga Bay Marine National Park, and explore Bangkok. All excursions and transfers on this tour are on a private basis, and all day trips, activities, and accommodations can be tailored in accordance with your personal wishes.

Begin your Laos & Thailand adventure in the Laotian capital of Vientiane. Visit the famous Buddha Park, a quirky concrete sculpture garden that is home to over 200 statues. Later, relish an adventurous dinner safari by tuk-tuk in the city, visit a bustling evening food market, and enjoy an authentic feast while watching the sights and sounds around you.

More excitement awaits in the gorgeous countryside around Vang Vieng. Explore some of the interesting caves. Swim or float on an inner tube. Trek to the Hmong village of Phathao and embark on a four-hour kayaking trip along the Nam Song River, passing serene scenes of rural life against a backdrop of soaring limestone mountains. Be sure to visit the Blue Lagoon for a swim, and the nearby ‘Golden Crab Cave.’

Countryside around Luang Prabang

Spend a full day trekking in the Lao countryside through the rice fields and farms and into the jungle. Explore a cave that served as a natural bomb shelter for the villagers during the Second Indochina War. Meet the sun bears and Malayan black bears at a bear rescue center, and swim in the natural pools at the gorgeous Kuang Si Waterfalls. Visit the Mandalao Reserve Elephant Sanctuary, meet and bond with the elephants and then accompany them on a two-hour trek through the beautiful Lao jungle, passing traditional Lao farms and the Huay Nok stream, where the elephants may frolic in its cool waters.

Your Mekong River Cruise

Step aboard a luxurious French-colonial-styled river cruiser for a leisurely voyage through serene nature, isolated villages and magnificent temples, discovering the most beautiful, remote, riverside areas of Laos. Observe the local weavers honoring their timeworn traditional crafts at the village of Muang Keo, and take a short and easy trek to the famous Pak Ou Caves on the Mekong’s rocky shore. Meet the local ethnic Lao, Khmu, and Hmong residents at the tiny village of Kop Aek. Hang out with some more elephants at the country’s most sustainably managed elephant sanctuary.

Nam Kan National Park

Your adventure continues in the beautiful Nam Kan National Park. Fly through the jungle, from mountain to mountain, via a series of exceptionally long ziplines. See the country’s biggest tree; stay in a jungle tree house; hike through the national park and swim in the Nam Nga River.

Northern Thailand

Your Northern Thailand Laos itinerary now brings you to the province of Chiang Rai. Visit hill tribe villages in the highlands, each with a distinct language and a fascinating well-preserved culture; meet and mingle with the friendly tribespeople. Delve into the temples of Chiang Rai city.

Phuket and Phang Nga Bay

Head to the sublime whiter-than-white tropical beaches of Phuket to chill out. Go island hopping through the islets, caves, mangrove lagoons, and sheer limestone cliffs that jut vertically out of the emerald green water in the Phang Nga Bay Marine National Park. Visit James Bond Island and the floating fishermen’s village on Panyi Island. Swim or grab an inflatable canoe and paddle around the dramatic karst formations. Enjoy watching a famous cabaret show in the evening.

End your Laos & Thailand tour in Bangkok, beginning with an evening street food adventure in Chinatown. The next day, explore Bangkok’s most famous temples on a private tour and finally, enjoy a Thai massage in Wat Pho – a perfect ending to your holiday.

Itinerary & Prices

All itineraries are subject to change due to seasonal weather conditions (and resultant variations in river and tributary water levels) affecting accessibility to locations. Thus navigation routes, times and excursions may need to be modified at the cruise captain’s or your guide's discretion.

Welcome to Laos

Discover Buddha Park

After breakfast, your guide will meet you for a relaxing half-day exploration of the famous Buddha Park.

Built in 1958, the park is a fanciful sculpture garden containing more than 200 Buddhist and Hindu statues including a quirky giant concrete pumpkin with a three-level interior representing Hell, Earth, and Heaven.

In the evening, let us take you out for an adventurous dinner safari by Tuk Tuk, the three-wheeled taxis of Laos.

Enjoy a meal at a bustling Vientiane evening food market where all the hungry locals pick up their takeaway dinners!

After dinner we’ll take a short walk downtown, past some local petanque courts, to visit the well-known intersection that becomes thriving roadside dessert and drink markets at night. You can try hot soy milk, fresh juices, and other unusual local beverages such as rosella or longan drinks. There are also carts selling delicious traditional Lao sweets, many made with coconut or sticky rice, and Lao-style roti with banana and coconut milk.

Return to your hotel in the late evening.

Caves and Kayaks

Explore the wonderfully pristine area around Vang Vieng on a full-day kayaking and hiking trip.

Morning drive 14km (9mi) north of Vang Vieng to explore some of the interesting caves in the area, including Tham Sang (Elephant Cave), named for the elephant-shaped stalactite in the small cavern; the nearby Tham Hoi (Snail Cave), named after snail-shaped formations near its entrance. Explore the dark cave winding down 2km into the mountain.

Next, the Tham Nam (Water Cave) with a refreshing pool of water at its entrance, ideal for a swim or floating on an inner tube.

After a picnic lunch, enjoy a 1hr trek to the Hmong village of Phathao passing through rice paddies and vegetable gardens.

After some time to explore the village, embark on a 4hr kayaking trip back to Vang Vieng along the Nam Song River, passing serene scenes of rural life backed by soaring limestone mountains.

Purchasing your ticket to the Blue Lagoon also buys you entrance to a nearby cave, which is commonly referred to as the ‘Golden Crab Cave’, or Phou Kham Cave, named because a few of the stalactites and stalagmites look like golden crabs.

The entrance requires a steep climb up a trail before the cave dives into the ground, through a narrow entrance and opening up into the first chamber, which is well lit and contains a bronze reclining Buddha illuminated by a ray of sunlight.

After return and lunch, transfer by car to Luang Prabang.

Along the way, ride through local villages and witness the way locals live in the countryside and outside the bigger towns. Arrive in Luang Prabang in the early evening.

Jungle Walk with the Elephants

Explore the mysterious beauty of the Lao jungle with our recently rescued elephants as your companions.

This journey is the perfect way for these happy elephants to enjoy a walk in their natural habitat after decades of hard labor in logging camps, and also offers you a once-in-a-lifetime experience to connect with these wonderful animals.

MandaLao’s guides and mahouts will teach you how elephants and humans can communicate with one another – once this connection is made it’s almost impossible not to empathize with these giant beasts, our own emotions reflected clearly in their behavior; a life-changing experience with animals that at first appear vastly different.

Walk with your new gigantic companions on a 2-hour trek through the beautiful Lao jungle, passing traditional Lao farms and the Huay Nok stream, where the elephants may frolic in its cool waters.

Following lunch, you will take a short ride back to Luang Prabang and have one more chance to ask your guides any final questions.

Local Village and Pak Ou Caves

In the morning, your driver will transfer you to the pick-up point of Anouvong. Soon after embarkation, meet a writer and retired consultant to UNESCO on heritage preservation – Mr. Francis Engelmann, who will share some of his expertise on the country’s rich cultural heritage, the turbulent history, and the day-to-day life of the Lao people.

Soon after the lecture, we arrive in the village of Muang Keo where you get the chance to observe local weavers honoring their timeworn traditional crafts.

From here, we take a short and easy trek to the famous Pak Ou Caves, located directly on the Mekong’s rocky shore and opposite the mouth of the Ou River. There are two spacious limestone grottoes which house approximately 4,000 sacred Buddhist statues and images.

At the cave, meet a local “medicine man” of the nearby local village. Take a small trek leading into the jungle while our local expert shares his knowledge about nature in this area. In the village, we can see households with traditional weaving and the ‘the art of local whisky distillery.

Time permitting, continue to another gem of a local village. The locals earn parts of their leaving with basket weaving.

Meanwhile, the culinary team is in full preparation for a very special evening. On a nearby, very beautiful peaceful sandbank our chefs invite you to a BBQ dinner. Some villagers join to entertain you with some classic traditional dance and music performances.

Village Life with Ethnic Groups

Early birds are welcome to join the daily morning exercise class (Yoga or Tai Chi) on the terrace deck. As we cruise along in the morning, our local expert hosts a lecture about the Laotian culture of the diverse tribes living along the upper Mekong.

We arrive at a very rural and utmost charming village inhabited by Khmu people. The village also has a small primary school for the few kids residing here remotely with their families. Living in the bamboo huts on stilts, scattered across rice fields, the local people today still perform all work manually.

After lunch on board we arrive at a secluded sandbank spot. The local ethnic Lao, Khmu, and Hmong live in the tiny village of Kok Aek. These residents have committed themselves to the organic growth of vegetables, fruits, and herbs. They have set up a little parcel of land as an organic garden, caringly maintained. Be sure to sample a local specialty, kai paen, which is made of dried freshwater “seaweed” topped with sesame and vegetables.

We stay overnight at this pleasant place. An optional meditation session is available at a local temple. After dinner, enjoy the movie night onboard.

All About the Elephants

Early birds are welcome to join the daily morning exercise on the terrace deck (Tai Chi or Yoga).

After breakfast, a local expert will host a lecture about the Laotian elephants – their cultural importance in the past and their current situation which had brought them to the brink of extinction.

In the early afternoon, we arrive in the small town of Pakbeng. Opposite of the town – so to say on the port side of cruising direction – is the country’s most sustainably managed elephant sanctuary. If we arrive early enough, we may still see elephants freely walking along the shoreline and taking a morning bath. All the elephants here used to work as logging elephants, and now they live in peace and safety.

Later take a drive up to a lovely hilltop temple with views of the zig-zagging Mekong river.

Back on board take in the amazing scenery or enjoy some downtime in our tucked-away spa. We drop anchor at a protected area mid-river. Kick back with an aperitif on the open deck and get prepared for your last dinner on board – a gala and farewell dinner in al-fresco style on the terrace deck.

Relaxing Day On Board and Local Guesthouse

Enjoy your last sunrise aboard with a morning exercise again. This morning you can take all the time for a long and relaxed brunch (which we can serve to you also on the terrace deck).

Kick back and enjoy these last quiet sailing hours. After some hours, the landscape and the river start to change, becoming more mountainous and the river increasingly narrow.

Join a Lao cooking class on board.

Arrive at Huay Xai at approximately 3PM. Here you will be met by the driver and transferred to the local guesthouse.

Hill-tribes Encounters

North Thailand is famous for its colorful hill tribes. Drive out of Chiang Rai to Mae Chan district and continue uphill along narrow mountain roads to visit the simple Akha and Yao hill tribe villages.

The Akha, who originated in Tibet, are amongst the poorest of Thailand’s ethnic minorities and can also be found in the northern part of Laos. They are mainly farmers and known for their artistry.

The Yao, whose origins are in China, is heavily influenced by Chinese traditions, still using Chinese characters in the writing of their language. The two minorities live peacefully close to each other. Observe the distinct differences between them and learn more about their culture, traditions, and costumes.

Try to strike up a conversation before returning to your lodge by car.

Temples of Chiang Rai

Founded in 1262 AD, Thailand’s most northern city boasts a fascinating architectural history in a mix of Thai and Burmese styles.

Begin your tour by visiting the ancient temple of Wat Phra Kae, the original home of the Emerald Buddha which is now housed in Bangkok. A replica was made and placed in the same spot where it was found.

Continue with a visit to Wat Phra That Doi Chom Thong with its large gold stupa. Visit Wat Rong Khun, which is different from any other temple in Thailand. In contrast to the ancient temples, this temple was built in 1997 and was designed using white glass.

While traveling through the city, observe the influence of the city’s Chinese ethnic minorities. Back to the lodge in the afternoon, enjoy the remainder of the day in nature.

City Temples and Thai Massage

Explore two of Bangkok’s most famous temples: Wat Traimit and Wat Pho. Wat Traimit houses a 3m (10ft) tall, 5.5-tonne, solid-gold Buddha image, cast sometime in the 13th century and is an excellent example of the graceful Sukhothai style that is still very much in favor to this day. Interestingly, the statue was only ‘discovered’ some 40 years ago, hidden beneath a plaster exterior as protection against theft.

Continue to Wat Pho, which houses the enormous 45m (148ft) Reclining Buddha. Notice how the Buddha’s feet alone are 5m (16ft) long and exquisitely decorated in mother-of-pearl illustrations of auspicious lakshanas, drawing attention to the concept that his beautiful and perfectly proportioned body is an outer reflection of inner spiritual power.

In addition to being home to more than 1,000 Buddha images, more than any other temple in the country, Wat Pho is also the spiritual home of traditional therapeutic Thai massage. Enjoy a 60min herbal Thai massage in Wat Pho – a perfect ending to your holiday.

Learn more about Laos

Best time to visit laos.

Laos is a great place to visit at any time of the year as the weather doesn't vary much – it’s always hot and humid! The coolest time to visit is from November to January. This is also the driest time, and the main festival period, so it’s an interesting time to travel through Laos. The wet season runs from June to October. It rains frequently during this time, temperatures average over 85 degrees Fahrenheit and although some roads may be closed due to flooding, it is a great time for river travel. February to May is drier but hot, with temperatures climbing over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Culture and customs

The population of Laos is made up of more than 100 different ethnic groups, with each having their own distinct clothing, language, customs and way of life. The Lao Loum, who reside in the lowlands along the Mekong, make up the largest ethnic group. Smaller ethnic groups include the Hmong and Mien, both highland dwellers, and the Lao Thoeng, who prefer the lower mountains. Many tribes share cultural similarities with tribes from neighbouring countries, so it’s possible to see Chinese , Vietnamese , Khmer and Thai influences within the dress, food and arts of these people.

Generally, Laotians are known for their laidback lifestyle and calm, steady approach to life. With an emphasis on the simple pleasures of family, food and religion, most people from Laos remain closely connected to their family and village for a lifetime. Most Laotians live in villages, rather than the city, where the sense of community is strong and people are connected to their neighbours and friends. Visiting wats (temples) to make offerings and give alms to monks is a common part of daily life for most, with much respect and reverence reserved for monks.

Buddhist holidays and traditional festivals linked to harvest time and holy periods are commonly celebrated throughout the villages of Laos and are timed according to lunar cycles. With different dates each year, it can be hard to predict the exact timing of these local celebrations, but visiting one can provide great insight into the fascinating culture of Laos.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Laotian cuisine draws on culinary traditions from its neighbors, so visitors will be able to taste the flavors of China, Thailand and Vietnam in the food of Laos.

Things to try in Laos

This spicy meat salad is considered the national dish of Lao. The delicious combination of minced beef, chicken or pork seasoned with chili, lime and mint, served with vegetables and sticky rice is a firm favorite with locals and travelers.

2. Khao Poon

This popular soup of meat, rice noodles, lime leaves, chili, garlic and fish sauce has a few variations. The version made with coconut milk makes the dish similar to a laksa, while the version without coconut milk is a lighter option.

3. Fresh fruit

The markets of Laos have a cornucopia of delicious fruits on offer, either fresh or whipped up in a juice. Pineapple, orange, watermelon, guava and banana are plentiful but why not try more exotic fruits like lychee, longan, rambutan or jackfruit?

The answer to Laos’ heat and humidity is a bottle of locally brewed Beerlao, best served cold at the end of a long day of exploring.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Laos is located in South-East Asia, bordered by China, Thailand , Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar . The topography of Laos is very mountainous, with much of the land being covered in forest and unsuitable for farming. Due to the mountainous terrain, Laos lacks a developed road network, with most locals living in small villages in the highlands, lowlands and along the Mekong River. Visiting Laos is like going back in time to when highways, traffic jams, mass transit systems and skyscrapers didn't exist. Visitors will be awed by the lush landscapes and stunning scenery, which is unlike anywhere else on earth.

History and government

Early history.

It's thought that Laos has been inhabited by people for thousands of years, although written evidence reveals that societies existed in the 9th century. Early society was based on agriculture and prior to the advent of Buddhism in the 16th century, people largely subscribed to animist beliefs and Shiva-worship, with archaeological evidence of this remaining today.

Like its neighboring countries, Laos was ruled by a series of kingdoms and was subject to invasion from surrounding forces from nearby domains. Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1600s, with the Dutch being the first to arrive. Despite this, the French have had the most European influence in the region. After enduring years of invasion and control from neighboring countries, Laos also had French rule to contend with in the late 1800s, when it became a French colony.

Recent history

Laos was controlled by Japanese forces during World War II, was declared an independent state in 1950 and gained full independence as a constitutional monarchy in 1954. The 1960s proved to be a devastating time for the people of Laos, with their nation gaining the dubious honor of being the most bombed country in the world. The United States bombed Laos extensively in an attempt to eradicate North Vietnamese sanctuaries, and sadly contemporary Laos is still dealing with huge amounts of unexploded ordnance (UXO) that is littered throughout the countryside.

A coalition government was set up in 1962, but in 1975 Laos became a Communist state when the king gave up his throne in favor of a president and prime minister being instated. During the late 1970s, many people of Laos fled to neighboring countries as refugees, as trade embargoes from foreign nations led to widespread poverty and disadvantage. By the 1990s, Laos had become a full member of ASEAN and foreign nations had lifted their trade embargoes, which allowed free enterprise to grow.

Major credit cards are generally accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in the city and tourist areas in the cities. However, they may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas. Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases, since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Laos.

ATMs can be found in the cities of Laos, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic. Smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so prepare for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

From many outside viewers, this country is a total sleeper and under the radar as it lacks of tourism marketing to international markets. With more than 2 million tons of bombs over the country by Americans during the Vietnam War as part of a covert attempt to wrest power from communist forces, Laos is also the most heavily bombed nation in history today.

As a result, Laos becomes much undeveloped than its neighboring countries. The infrastructure in Laos has not been setup for mass tourism, taxis are not abundant and road conditions are still challenging to visitors which take long journey from place to place.

If Vietnam is famous for Halong Bay; Cambodia is for the Angkor complex; Myanmar for Bagan’s plains, and Thailand for pristine beaches and islands, of course this is just one of key spots among many other attractions of these countries, so what is the best of Laos to visit?

The pace of life is slow so it is good place to relax . The Lao people are simple, friendly and just living their life. Laos culture is diversified with many ethnic minorities and amazingly representing Buddhism which retains its oldest tradition .

In addition, Laos really has many other things to offer, just that they don’t get proportional marketing. There are also many National Protected Areas (Nam Ha NPA is one of best known) where gives many opportunities for trekking in the jungles or see the rare wildlife there.

Of course, tasty Laos food cannot be missed in the trip as well.

best time to visit Laos

The best time of your travel can be from November to February when the weather is the most pleasant.

Laos has a typical tropical monsoon climate including dry season from November to April and wet season from May to October with the variations in temperature. Among these seasons, the hottest period comes to March and April (end months of dry season leading to wet season) and early start of wet season in May, June.

During wet season (or rainy season), an average rainfall can reach 1,300 to 2,300 mm (50 to 90 in) with the heaviest rainfall in August & September, especially on the Bolaven Plateau, Champasak Province in the South. The average temperature is generally around 27 °C (80 °F).

In dry season, the average temperatures in the cool months (December – February) vary between 16 and 21 °C (60 and 70 °F) with the coolest month coming to January. In March and April, the temperature increases higher over 32 °C (90 °F) with April as the hottest month of year when Lao New Year and water festival occurs.

In fact, you can actually visit Laos all-year-round. However, the best time of your travel can be from November to February when the weather is the most pleasant . In the far north of Laos, the weather even gets pretty cold in the evenings. Of course, this is also high/peak season, so prepare for more crowds with higher expenses, especially during Christmas/New Year Eve or Lao New Year. The early booking is highly recommended to guarantee services during this time.

While planning a holiday to Laos, it is not easy to decide the best tour package as right choice of travelers. As the main hubs of Laos, your trip can normally start either from Luang Prabang or Vientiane with various trip length (less, within or more than a week) as well as travel styles (culture and history, adventure, luxury), absolutely depending on your interest, time & budget.

Each tribe has its own language, beliefs, customs and crafts... and its people are happy to share them with visitors to their colorful villages. Meet members of the Palong, Padong and the "long-necked" Karen tribes, whose women are known for the distinctive, traditional brass rings worn around their necks – which you can try on yourself.

About Booking This Tour

Travel Documents

If you are a U.S. citizen traveling internationally,  you will need a passport that is valid for at least six months beyond the completion of your Tauck journey and current visas to enter Vietnam and Cambodia. You will not need a visa to enter Thailand for the short duration of this tour. Please Note: Your passport should contain at least three blank visa pages.

If you are a citizen of another country traveling internationally, please contact a consulate or embassy of Vietnam, of Cambodia and Thailand to determine if entry visas are required.

Tauck has collaborated with VisaCentral in the US to assist our guests with processing and issuing their travel documents. If a guest opts to work with VisaCentral, their services are available online at www.visacentral.com/tauck . To speak directly with VisaCentral Customer Service, call 844-860-7199 (toll-free in the US) or email [email protected] .  All US citizens require a valid passport to enter Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand, and that passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the completion of travel. (Please note that although adult passports are valid for a full ten years, children's passports require renewal every five years.)  Your passport must also contain a minimum of at least 3 blank visa pages. Please be advised that that extra visa pages are no longer available for passports. If you need additional pages in order to comply, you must renew your passport even if your current passport has not expired.  If you are a United States citizen and do not have a valid passport, please contact the closest US passport agency or consult the US State Department web site for detailed information on how to obtain or renew your passport at: www.travel.state.gov .  A visa is not required for Thailand.  Visas are necessary for both Vietnam and Cambodia. Please note that these visas must be processed within 90 days of your arrival.  All fees will be listed on visa paperwork.  The visa fee, as well as any applicable consular fees and shipping fees, are not included in the tour cost. The visa application will include the amount of the visa fee, which varies by destination.  Additionally, you may elect to obtain a Vietnam e-visa online at https://evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn/en and/or a Cambodian e-visa on line at www.evisa.gov.kh  Non-US citizens should contact the embassies or consulates of Vietnam, Cambodia & Thailand to determine what documentation is required.  We advise bringing a photocopy of your passport as well as 2 extra passport photos in case your passport is lost during the tour. Be sure to check the expiration of your passport. New passports and visas may take several weeks to obtain.  IMPORTANT NOTE: Failure to obtain ALL necessary documentation prior to your tour may result in being denied entry into a country, or delays in entry until proper documentation can be obtained. In consideration of the larger group (and to maintain our planned itinerary), travelers who have failed to obtain the necessary documentation in advance may need to remain at the airport, and could thus be responsible for arranging (and paying for) their own transportation to join the group. Tauck will not be responsible for obtaining any missing documentation, nor will Tauck be responsible for any expenses incurred, missed tour components or other losses resulting from the failure to obtain proper travel documents in advance.  Regardless of which visa service company is used, the application will require a summary of your Tauck itinerary, which we will be happy to provide. Please email [email protected].   Please note: Because a visa is an official document, Tauck cannot apply for a visa on your behalf, and we are very limited regarding the assistance we're able to provide. If you require help, we recommend working with a reputable visa service company as they can provide the highest level of assistance.

To facilitate Travel Requirements, destinations are increasingly utilizing online forms that require digital proof that you've successfully completed your submission (via an email, QR code, etc.) To ensure smooth travels and peace of mind, we strongly recommend all guests carry a personal smart phone and sign up for international data plans before traveling overseas.

Note: For activities marked with an asterisk (*) in day-by-day descriptions, participation is at your own risk; a signed liability waiver will be required.

TRAVELING WITH CHILDREN AS A GUARDIAN: If you are traveling as the guardian of a child/children, we strongly suggest that you carry a letter from both parents of the child authorizing emergency treatment in the event of illness or accident. For travel abroad, many foreign countries have specific entry requirements for children under 21 who are traveling internationally without BOTH parents. (These requirements are in response to the increased incidence of children being abducted and taken abroad.) PLEASE NOTE THAT TAUCK IS NOT RESPONSIBLE for the disruption of travel caused by improper documentation for children traveling without both parents.

The Guest Protection plan waives cancellation fees outlined below, provided we are notified of cancellation before your tour departs. Tour cancellation fees are waived regardless of reason, without written notice, and Tauck will refund land tour cost.

To obtain your state-specific Certificate of Insurance that contains the complete terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions of the certificate, visit  affinitytravelcert.com/docs/TACGPPINTL .

Travel Requirements For This Tour

Air Information and Luggage Restrictions

AIRFARE: Airfare to and from this destination is not included in the journey cost. If purchasing your air elsewhere, it is very important to provide us with your confirmed arriving and departing flight information no later than 3 weeks before your arrival date. Flight information can be submitted to Tauck (or verified, if you've already provided it) in the My Account section of Tauck.com.

TAUCK AIRPORT TRANSFERS are included at the start and end of the journey between the airport and the Tauck hotel. Airport transfers are available for any pre tour or post tour hotel stays immediately consecutive to the tour, providing flight information is received in the Tauck office no later than three weeks in advance. Details on locating your transfer upon arrival to the tour start city will be included in your final documents.

AIRLINES and CHECKED LUGGAGE: Due to space limitations during your Tauck journey, we ask that you please limit your checked luggage to one average-size suitcase per person. Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and are free to revise luggage policies without notice. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies. PLEASE NOTE that if you are booked on a tour that includes on-tour flights, the checked luggage weight restrictions for these flights may be lower than the weight restrictions for your international flights.

Special Luggage Restrictions for this Tour

Due to strictly enforced weight restrictions on the on-tour flights, luggage weight per person must not exceed 44 lbs (20 kg) and you are permitted only one piece of checked luggage. Luggage exceeding the allowable weight is subject to excess baggage charges, which may result in a considerable additional expense.

The maximum allowable weight for carry-on luggage is 15 lbs (6.8 kg), and the maximum allowable dimensions are 22" by 14" by 10" (55.9 cm by 35.6 cm by 25 cm).  These dimensions include all wheels, handles, pockets, etc. If these dimensions are exceeded, the carry-on piece will be checked.

Regulations within most airports require that customers handle their own luggage through customs.

Checked Luggage – General

Besides complying with the Tauck restriction noted above, you should also be sure to research and comply with all airline baggage restrictions relating to your flights to and from your Tauck journey. Airlines have become much more strict in enforcing size and weight limits in recent years, and luggage exceeding airline standards for size or weight may result in expensive overage fees or other consequences.

Airlines are free to revise luggage policies without notice, and certain airlines have different baggage allowances for different classes of service. Researching and complying with airline luggage restrictions is the responsibility of the guest, and Tauck cannot be held responsible for any costs or disruptions to travel caused by the failure to research and comply with airline policies.

Tauck luggage tags will be provided by your Tauck Director on Day 1 of your itinerary. Please do not attach a Tauck luggage tag to any carry-on items, as the Tauck tags designate luggage that is to be handled and transferred by ground operators and hotel staff during your journey.

Carry-on Luggage – General

Although oversize bags and wheeled, carry-on luggage are popular for airline travel, they are often not convenient or appropriate for motor coach travel or for many on-tour flights. Most modern sightseeing motor coaches offer limited space for numerous or larger items. Space under seats or in the overhead rack is typically small, and designed to accommodate items like coats, hats, purses, and small camera bags, etc.

For your day-to-day travel while on tour, we recommend that you limit your hand luggage to a small, soft-sided carry-on piece, and only those items you need handy during the day such as purses, make-up, medications, cameras, film, etc. Items too large to fit under the motor coach seat or in the overhead rack must be stored in the luggage bays beneath the motor coach, and may be inaccessible during daytime travel.

Health, Safety and Mobility

HEALTH CONSIDERATIONS

Please check with your health insurance provider to determine whether you are covered while traveling. If you will not be covered under your current policy, we strongly suggest that you arrange for adequate coverage while on tour. If you have a medical condition which might limit your participation in activities, please consult your physician for pre-departure health advice and notify Tauck as soon as possible, if you have not already done so. We will advise your Tauck Director accordingly.

VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS

Some of the countries visited on this itinerary may require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against certain diseases in order to enter the country.  These requirements are subject to frequent change as outbreaks occur and subside in different areas, and it is therefore crucial that you obtain the very latest information on entry requirements as you prepare for your journey.

For the most current information, please consult the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) by clicking  here  and the World Health Organization (WHO) by clicking  here . You may also wish to visit the web sites for the embassies of the countries you will be visiting.  Besides providing details on vaccination requirements, these sites can also provide information on vaccinations that may be recommended (but aren't required) and other potential health issues for which no vaccines are available.

Any decisions relating to your health, of course, should not be based solely on information provided by a web site.  It is critically important that you consult with your personal physician prior to your journey to obtain any required vaccinations and to review any optional recommendations offered by the CDC or other sources.

Please be sure to discuss your journey with your physician at least four to six weeks in advance of your departure, as certain vaccinations take time to become fully effective.  Also, be certain to ask your physician for proof of any vaccinations you receive, and to pack this proof along with your other travel documents in your carry-on luggage (not in your checked luggage).

Researching and complying with vaccination entry requirements for the countries visited on this itinerary is the responsibility of the traveler and not Tauck. Tauck is therefore not responsible for any expenses incurred or disruptions to travel caused by improper or incomplete vaccinations, or by the failure to provide proof of required vaccinations.

If you do not obtain the necessary vaccinations and proper documentation, you may be denied entry into one or more countries, or temporarily quarantined until the necessary vaccinations are administered, or until proper documentation is provided.

This Southeast Asia tour is very active and includes 6 on-tour flights. You should be in good health and able to walk reasonable distances over uneven terrain that may, at times, be rocky and muddy, as some of the most memorable sightseeing can only be accomplished on foot. Southeast Asia is home to innumerable historic buildings and sites, some dating from antiquity. Therefore, roads, walkways and architecture will present difficulties for some guests with physical disabilities. For the most part, however, the amount of walking you do is at your discretion. Please Note: There are numerous steps on this itinerary. In addition to walking, various other modes of transportation used to highlight the different aspects of Southeast Asian culture and geography for this tour could include airplane, boat, sampan, cyclo and tuk-tuk (auto rickshaw).

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON SUPPLEMENTAL OXYGEN AND MOBILITY ISSUES:  This Tauck itinerary cannot accommodate oxygen tanks, wheelchairs or motorized scooters.  Oxygen tanks are strictly prohibited in many foreign countries on regional flights aboard small aircraft, such as those intra-tour flights featured on this Tauck journey.  Likewise, the very limited cargo capacity on such flights prohibits the transport of wheelchairs or motorized scooters.

Guests should also bear in mind that the infrastructure in many foreign countries, particularly in developing countries, often presents severe and even insurmountable challenges for those with walking difficulties or other mobility issues.  The responsibility of the Tauck Director is to ensure that the larger group enjoys a relaxing and informative journey, and he or she cannot be relied upon to provide ongoing individual assistance to any one guest.  Guests requiring such individualized assistance must be accompanied by an able-bodied companion who can provide it.

SPECIAL DIETARY REQUESTS

The restaurants, hotels, caterers and numerous other partners we work with all do their best to accommodate special dietary requests from Tauck guests. However, given the diverse nature of those food providers (from small wineries to grand hotels to world-famous restaurants in more than 70 countries worldwide), some of our partners are better able than others to accommodate such requests. We therefore cannot guarantee that all dietary requests can be accommodated at every meal. Also, please note that where dietary requests can be accommodated, choices will frequently be limited.

Reading List

We have compiled a reading list of recommended books to give you more information about the destinations you will be traveling to on your upcoming journey!

You can view the reading list  here.

What To Pack

The climate in Southeast Asia is hot and humid year round. We suggest that you pack lightweight, casual clothing. While it is quite rainy and hot for most of the year, our departure dates are always scheduled when weather will be optimal.

Dress for comfort and convenience with a wardrobe that is flexible. Casual, cotton clothing is recommended. Sturdy yet comfortable walking shoes that have already been broken-in are essential. For dining in the evening, and for the welcome reception and the farewell dinner, you may wish to dress up a bit, but certainly be comfortable. Jackets for men are not required.

Valet laundry service is available throughout the entire tour. Hairdryers and irons and ironing boards are either located in your hotel room or are immediately available upon request.

We recommend that you pack an adequate supply of your prescription medication in its original container to last through your entire journey, together with a copy of your doctor's prescription or a letter from your health-care provider on office stationery explaining that the medication has been prescribed for you, a list of the generic names of your medication, your travel documents and a change of clothing in your carry-on bag to avoid any inconvenience in the event that your flight or luggage is delayed.

Toiletries, sundries, and over-the-counter and prescription medications may either be difficult to find or not available in Southeast Asia.

Following is a list of recommended items to pack for your journey across Southeast Asia:

  • Casual, cotton clothing
  • An optional sports jacket for men
  • Casual yet elegant evening wear for ladies
  • Light sweater
  • Light waterproof jacket
  • Sturdy yet comfortable, walking shoes that have already been broken-in

A first-time guide to Laos

thailand laos tours

An alluring balance of culture, history and sheer natural beauty makes Laos a country you shouldn’t overlook. Getty Images

Quiet and culturally rich Laos has lots to offer – much of which you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Less famous than its neighbors Thailand and Vietnam, Laos can sometimes sink into obscurity along the Southeast Asia backpacking trail.

Don’t let it. The quiet and culturally rich Lao People’s Democratic Republic has lots to offer – much of which you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

While its history has been marked by war, revolution and other hardships, all this has unfolded in a stunning tropical paradise. Indeed, it’s this very contrast – between a tumultuous past and sheer natural beauty – that makes Laos a particularly rewarding and eye-opening destination to explore.

The ancient Lanna kingdom capital of Luang Prabang boasts some of the most untouched and historically significant temples in the region. The capital Vientiane brims with multicultural nuances. Incredible natural beauty is apparent in almost every province. All this makes Laos an ideal place for those who prefer getting off the beaten tourist track. The country has generally drawn backpacking types, though it’s now becoming a more popular (and accessible) place for families and luxury travelers, too.

If you’re headed to Laos for the first time, here’s what you should know.

When should I go to Laos?

As in most other Southeast Asian countries, Laos promises a tropical climate throughout the year, with average daytime temperatures ranging between 25°–35°C (77°–95°F).

During the “winter” months of November to February, Laos cools down a smidge; thanks to a lack of rain clouds, the nights can get comfortably chilly. Any local would say this is the best time to visit.

In winter, the humidity drops, the rivers are full and the tropical forests are lush from the recent monsoon rains. The northernmost parts of the country (such as Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang and Udomxai) are also noticeably more temperate than other areas on the same latitude thanks to their mountainous elevation.

October is a great month to visit Laos if you prefer to beat the winter crowds. Although you may catch the tail end of the monsoon, things should stay mostly dry – and there are several cultural festivals worth taking in, like the Boat Racing Festival and the Naga Rocket Festival (dates vary from year to year for both).

But a tropical climate is not all sun and games. March through June is the summer, where the heat can be unbearable for the uninitiated, especially on buses and in hostels. River levels are also low during this time (a situation made worse by Chinese and Thai dam projects along major waterways), while slash-and-burn farming blankets portions of the country in a hazardous haze of PM2.5 particulate matter.

The summer’s saving grace, however, is the Lao New Year, when the country erupts into a nationwide water fight to wash away the sins of yesteryear and ring in the new. Known in Laos as Pi Mai, the festival is generally a calmer affair than in next-door Thailand, emphasizing cultural experiences over parties. If you happen to be with a family or friendly locals, you’ll no doubt be invited to a “merit-making” ceremony to call up good luck, health and fortune in the new year. For something a little more public, head to any city center for parades, festive markets and performances galore.

By July, the new rains quench the parched earth and clean the air, giving way to a palette of lush greens nationwide. While travel during the monsoon season can be exciting, many tourist attractions and national parks close during this time due to flooding and other rain-induced dangers. The only exception is the Bolaven Plateau, where an exceptional array of cascading waterfalls and forested waterways reach their full glory during this time.

How much time should I spend in Laos?

First-time visitors can consider two options. First: a short, in-and-out trip as part of a wider tour of Southeast Asia . Entering and exiting from Vientiane with a few days’ jaunt around the wild mountains of Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang gives a taste of the country’s treasures for those on a tight schedule.

Just an hour away from the capital on the new high-speed train line, or 3 hours by bus, Vang Vieng is renowned for its unearthly limestone mountains and countless blue-green lagoons that offer a natural escape from the tropical heat. The town has moved on from its once louche reputation, with a ban on infamous “river bars” making it a draw for those who admire natural beauty and outdoor adventure.

A few hours north again and you’ll be in sleepy Luang Prabang, whose ancient cities, jungle aesthetics and laid-back pace offer plenty of allure. When you’re ready to speed up again, the high-speed train will have you back to Vientiane in under 2 hours.

If you have a few more days, we highly recommend making a loop of the country. Enter from Thailand , Vietnam or China , then use the intercity buses that connect Laos’ larger towns. For planning purposes, you can divide the country into four sectors: the north, where you’ll find Luang Prabang, Luang Namtha and farther-afield spots like the megalithic Plain of Jars; the Vientiane region, home to both the busy capital and nearby, dreamy Vang Vieng; the central provinces, where you can enjoy the stunning scenery of the Tha Khaek Loop and old colonial cities like Savannakhet; and the south , with the stunning Bolaven Plateau and Si Phan Don (also called “the 4000 islands”), which make up the beginning of the Mekong River Delta.

Top things to do in Laos

Irrespective of your timeline, there are a few must-see locations in Laos that can be part of both a quick tour or a longer visit.

Most first-time visitors enter through Vientiane – and it’s a great place to start. Expect an eclectic mix of French and Asian architecture, as well as grand monuments. The temple of Wat Si Muang  draws in locals from across the Southeast Asian subcontinent in search of good luck and blessings.

Nearby, beautiful Vang Vieng is a classic stop-off point for those with some time on the way to Luang Prabang – though many will tell you that Luang Prabang and Luang Namtha both offer better views, more lagoons and cheaper prices.

Looking east, the limestone karsts of Khammouane province tower over the landscape (and are best admired on a bike around the Tha Khaek Loop). Belowground, one of the world’s longest navigable river cave systems stretches 7.5km (4.5 miles) from mouth to exit, and is best explored by boat.

If you enter from the south via Thailand or across the Vietnamese or Cambodian borders, your best bet is to settle down in Pakse  to explore the surrounding natural wonders. The Bolaven Plateau has an intriguing history: it’s been both a center of coffee production and a target for blanket bombing during the Vietnam War. Today, it’s perhaps best known for its towering waterfalls.

Further south is Si Phan Don, where the Mekong river creates an inland archipelago of river islands with powerful and beautiful waterways. For something more cultural, the nearby small town of Champasak is a laid back stop-off as stunning as it is rich in history. The main attraction here is the sacred Wat Phu , an Angkorian ruin that dates back to the 11th century, hidden in the jungle like something from an adventure novel.

My favorite thing to do in Laos

There’s nothing better than getting on two wheels and exploring on my own terms. Even though communication can be tough in the middle of nowhere when you need to fill up your gas tank, the natural beauty and unscripted opportunities you’ll find in the countryside – say, lunch with some elderly grandmas, or an impromptu tour of a hidden cave – more than make up for the lack of tourist conveniences.

Rent a bike from the border town of Tha Khaek and head east along Rte 12 toward Vietnam. Within minutes you’ll be greeted by towering limestone karsts that just keep getting more impressive the further you drive. (Just be sure to keep your eyes on the road, as it can be a real challenge with so much to see!)

Following the loop with a left turn onto route E1 brings you to the mountainous hangout of Thalang, perfect for spending the night before you follow the same road up and around toward Lak Sao. By this point your derriere may be a little sore – but don’t give up now. The detour to Kong Lor Cave is well worth the extra hours in the saddle, with Hitchcock shot–style visuals as you drive between two towering cliff faces and the villages below.

For many, travel is about the destination. In Laos, the journey itself often brings more wonder.

How much money do I need for Laos?

In Laos, having cash on you is very important. You shouldn’t expect credit-card readers even in larger shops, gas stations and convenience stores, and ATMs are far and few between.

Since the Lao kip is quite unstable and highly inflated, vendors tend to accept both the Thai baht and US dollar (though change will be rendered in kip). Still, a recent movement to reject this practice and thus stabilize the national currency means that a growing number of vendors will only be paid in kip. Most banks will change foreign currency into kip for the official daily rate, and ATMs provide on-screen conversions before spitting out just the right combination of kip notes.

  • Air-conditioned hotel room: 300,000 to 1,000,000 LAK
  • Hostel room with fan: 100,000 LAK
  • City tuk-tuk ride: 50,000 to 200,000 LAK
  • Bus ticket between cities: 300,000 LAK
  • Liter of gas: 34,000 LAK
  • Admission fees to tourist attractions: 20,000 to 50,000 LAK
  • Bowl of noodles: 30,000 LAK
  • Bottle of water: 5,000 LAK
  • Bottle of Beerlao: 10,000 LAK

Do I need a visa for Laos?

ASEAN citizens do not need a visa to visit Laos, nor do citizens from Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Russia and Mongolia – granting them free entry to the country for between 15 to 30 days.

Citizens of most other countries require a visa for entry. We recommend obtaining this on arrival at most border posts and at any international airport; expect to pay US$30-45 (depending on nationality), in dollars, baht or kip. (The government of Laos has an e-visa web portal, but it’s often broken or inactive.) When you arrive in Laos, avoid third-party agents and touts and make your way to the immigration booth. You’ll need to fill out a few forms and provide a passport photo (you can pay an extra fee if you don’t have one with you) – which gets you a full-page visa sticker in your passport granting you 30 days of travel within the country.

Frequently asked questions about Laos

What are accommodations like in Laos?

Generally, accommodation is cheap and of a lower standard compared to Vietnam or Thailand – though quality tends to increase in tandem with price. Most rooms in cities and at resorts will have a private bathroom with some form of hot water. In rural locations, homestays or farmstays, you should expect the bare minimum. (It’s part of the experience, after all!)

Is it easy to book activities and hotels in Laos in advance?

Yes and no. Hotels are best booked through reputable third-party sites like Agoda or Booking.com, whereas activities are harder to sort out in advance. This is both due to a lack of digital fluency in the country and a more local approach to tourism in general.

We recommend doing a bit of advance planning through hotels and travel agents as best as you can, then sorting out the remaining details once you arrive in the country.

What’s the food like in Laos?

Lao cuisine isn’t unlike that of northeastern Thailand (Isan food). Dishes tend to be less spicy and more savory than in Thailand. Imagine a marriage of flavors between Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese cuisines.

Staples of Lao cuisine include sticky rice, minced-meat salads, fermented fish paste and pho noodles. Given the cost of protein, dishes often contain less beef, goat and pork and more rice and vegetables. This also means vegetarian options are easier to come by – if, that is, you’re not fazed by a splash of fish sauce here and there.

Is Laos suitable for kids?

Absolutely! Though that depends, of course, on how you like to travel. If you’re carrying a lot of baggage and worry about diet, dirt and bugs, Laos may be challenging. But if you’re happy to see your kids running around with chickens, playing in the mud or just enjoying life as the locals do, then you’ll be fine.

Laos is a very welcoming country and its people love children. Even in small villages, you’re likely to see playgrounds, bouncy castles and even fair rides set up year-round to keep kids entertained.

How safe is Laos?

Generally, quite safe. In the cities and rural areas, people are typically kind, helpful and trustworthy. Still, as anywhere, it’s important to stay aware and vigilant. Avoid flaunting your wealth, as pickpocketing can occur, especially at markets. Know that locals are usually quick to call out any suspicious activity, so you’re almost always around helpful people who have your back.

Keep in mind that few countries maintain embassies in Laos. This can make renewing a lost passport or finding your way back to a neighboring country a bit more complicated and time-consuming.

Can I use my phone or should I buy a SIM card in Laos?

Roaming works well in Laos and is relatively cheap for most carriers. If you prefer to use a Lao SIM card, they are cheap and can be easily acquired from booths at any port of entry, or at most convenience stores. Most Lao tour guides, taxi drivers and people in general use WhatsApp or WeChat to communicate.

Do I need insurance for Laos?

Yes. Since Laos’ health infrastructure is poor and medical treatment might involve a transfer to Vientiane or even Thailand, costs can quickly skyrocket for serious illnesses or emergencies. Don’t travel here uncovered.

What’s Lao coffee like?

It’s great. Always go for the freshly roasted beans.
