Easy to use, if you don’t want to carry notes around, you can use this card aboard, even add extra on the app from your debit card. Would definitely recommend and use for future holidays

Developer Response ,

Hi. Thank you so much for your review! Kind regards, Online Support Team

Terrible app and customer service

I am currently in Spain, brought the Asda Travel Money card before departing the UK. I downloaded the app for ease. It took me around 20 plus attempts just to register my card! Once registered, it just keeps crashing. I can’t see my balance or top up the card. After many attempts, I reluctantly called customer service, which kept dropping the call. I tried one last time only to receive a voicemail saying they are having technical issues and to call back in 4 hours! I am due to head out for the day, but now have to stay at in as I cannot top up my card. Absolute shambles! You would think a multi billion pound company would have a workable app / service. I am trying to give you money for goodness sake! I would give it a zero if I could. Thanks for spoiling my holiday.
Hi, sorry to hear this, so we can investigate the issue further, please can we ask you to email us at [email protected] so that we can follow up and perhaps provide a resolution. Kind regards, Online Support Team

Get ready for a hassle

When opening the travel card at the Asda branch, they failed to inform me that this card has one of the most pointless policies I have ever heard, it can only be topped up once every 24hrs. Luckily I tried to top it up before my flight as I would have found myself with no money on the card before the initial 24hr period. Now, when registering on the app, I would continuously receive the prompt stating I have entered incorrect information. So had to call customer service and they confirmed the info was indeed correct and then they had to register my details on the account before setting up the app.

Less than 1 star.

Less than 1 star.. I got 1.13 exchange rate which was great but then wanted to change back to sterling the rate was 0.85, lost £60. I couldn’t transfer money from Asda travel card back to my debit account, that’s when I rang Asda and the rate then was 0.85. Wish I’d just stayed with Monzo. Couldn’t understand customer service not very good English. Don’t get this card

Great customer service at Asda Travel Money Exchange Swindon

Having used the Asda Travel Money card over the last year, I experienced difficulty adding my debit card to add holiday money, by top up, via the app. I contacted Travelex and was told to go back to Asda. I met a lady called Elspeth who was working on the travel exchange and explained my problem. Elspeth went through the top up process on the app, plus adding my debit card, and could see the problem. She contacted a colleague who advised cancelling my travel card and issuing a new one which would also mean speaking to Travelex to transfer the balance from the original card to the new card. Elspeth was extremely patient and helpful while creating a new card, speaking to Travelex to transfer the balance and confirming the acceptance of my debit card by the app. I cannot thank her enough for solving the problem I had as the Asda Travel Money Card is a great asset while travelling abroad.

Fining me for not using the card..

Used the card for my holiday, then had the money sat in the account for my next holiday.. then look at it to see they have been taking money out. They actually charge you monthly for not using the card, like a punishment. What do they think, every person goes on holiday multiple times a year? AVOID

Caveat emptor

I usually research thoroughly before choosing a service, but I didn't check the reviews for this prepaid travel card. This was a mistake. First, ensure you check the collection locations as they are not always your local store. During the ordering process, I was informed that I needed to travel to a store over 60 miles away round trip, which I was prepared for. The ordering process online was straightforward, with confirmation emails sent promptly. Upon arrival at the store, I was the only customer waiting, yet the employee was busy on her mobile phone. Eventually, she signaled for me to come forward. When I provided my collection information, she said, "Oh yeah, we were supposed to contact you. Your order isn't in today. We'll get back in touch when it's here." I explained that I was traveling soon and urgently needed the travel card or cash equivalent, as I had already paid for the service. She told me she couldn't help and that I needed to speak to the Asda currency online team. I asked to speak to a manager, and she claimed to be the manager, adding that this wasn't "their" problem. In the Asda car park, I contacted the service team, who were very helpful. They suggested options like driving another 70 miles to a different store to collect an in-stock card. The online team also attempted to arrange for me to get the currency equivalent from the Asda currency counter, but after several minutes of trying, they couldn't get through. I walked back into the store with the phone, handed it to the same employee, but we still couldn't resolve the issue as there wasn't enough foreign currency available. I requested a refund, which Asda processed, but it wasn't immediate. The refund could take up to 5 working days to appear in my account. Summary: Great idea and easy online process. Felt undervalued as a customer due to the unhelpful store staff. Online team was very good and tried hard to resolve the issue, but the result was still unsatisfactory. Only one star because: I didn't receive the product I ordered and paid for. I traveled 60 miles and felt like I was causing the issue. The online team was helpful, but it should not have reached this point. I will never use Asda for anything like this again! Caveat emptor (Buyer beware)

My partner and i had travel insurance a few years back and a few hours before we were going to Malta on holiday her father passed away. They didn't pay out because we didn't supply full medical records from her fathers doctor. Death certificate wasn't enough and we didn't want to put her mother through anymore suffering by asking her to obtain these records. Absolutely disgusting way to treat someone who has just lost their father. They had the cheek a few weeks later to try and take renewal from us.

Even if preordered be prepared to wait & bring extra money.!

Online I prepaid for Malaysian Ringitts to be collected 5 days ahead at Asda Dagenham. Arrived to collect had to wait for 45 minutes. Instead of it being pre prepared they did not have the right amount of notes. So they demanded more money, leaving me no choice. Later I formally complained giving them the chance to rectify. Apart from a standard apology email that took three weeks they seem disinterested. Don't go there, I won't again!

Nine Months Later Still Waiting

Made a Claim to Asda Travel Insurance due to Covid.Followed there instructions and sent all relevant paperwork to them by Registered Post. They had just closed down due to Covid. They had No Arrangements in place to pick Claims up from offices so four weeks later finding this out I sent Claim by email. Seven weeks after original paperwork sent they opened claim. SEVEN Months later, after being told twice offer of settlement would be sent and third time it was being Prioritized, we are still waiting!. Shameful Company. Please Avoid.

Asda Travel Money: Rates and Stores

Travel money

As one of the UK’s largest supermarket chains, Asda offers everything you need for your regular weekly shop. Thanks to a partnership with travel money provider Travelex, you can also pick up your foreign currency at the same time you’re collecting your groceries.

No matter where in the world you’re headed, you’ll want to do some research on different travel money providers to find the one which offers you the best possible value. This guide covers all you need to know about Asda travel money - and also introduces an alternative, Wise , as a comparison.

With the Wise account (formerly TransferWise) you can buy foreign currency at the mid-market exchange rate with no markup, and spend easily when abroad, using your linked Wise Mastercard debit card . More on that coming up.

Asda travel money services

Asda provides customers with a range of travel money services , including:

  • In person foreign currency purchase at Asda travel money stores
  • Click and collect service to order currency online and pick up at a store
  • Home delivery of travel money
  • Asda travel money prepaid currency card

However, it is important to note that some services are disrupted due to restrictions in place to combat the global pandemic. This may include store closures, and delays to home delivery services for travel money. Restrictions change over time, so you’ll need to check out the latest details online before you decide how to arrange your travel money.

Asda travel money stores

There are specific travel money bureaux in some Asda stores around the country, offerings walk in currency exchange, click and collect travel money, and phone ordering of foreign currency . Over 50 different currencies are available, although for some currencies - or for large amounts - you’ll find you need to order in advance. You’ll be able to find the nearest Asda travel money service to you, using the Asda store locator tool .

At the time of writing all exchange bureaux have been closed due to the global pandemic response. Check out the latest details online before you head out to buy your travel money.

Home delivery

Another option to get your travel money is to buy online and have the cash delivered to you at home.

You’ll be able to place an order with a minimum value of £250, through to a maximum of £2,500. Home delivery is free for orders of £500 or more, with a £3.95 fee for delivery of smaller amounts of travel money. Home delivery is by Royal Mail, and will usually arrive the next working day if you order before 1:30pm. However, at the time of writing, this service is being disrupted due to the pandemic, and there may be delivery delays. Asda advise customers to leave adequate time before travelling to receive their travel money safely.

It’s useful to know that you’ll need to be home to accept delivery of your travel money, for security reasons. You’ll also want to check out the exchange rate used for your order, as a markup or margin may be added which can push up costs. More on that later.

Asda money travel insurance

If you’re looking for insurance to cover your trip abroad, you can also get that through Asda money . Asda partners with InsureandGo to provide a full range of insurance types, including single trip, multi-trip and winter sports cover.

Asda travel money rates

No matter where you are buying your travel money from, you’ll need to know the exchange rate that’s being used to switch your pounds to euros, dollars, zloty or any other currency. Exchange rates change all the time, but you can easily find the live mid-market exchange rate for your currency using a simple Google search or a reputable online currency converter.

It’s useful to know that many travel money services add a markup or margin to the exchange rate they offer customers, instead of passing on the mid-market exchange rate. Markups are extremely common where providers claim to offer commission free currency exchange. Instead of a transparent exchange fee or commission charge, a markup on the exchange rate is used to protect the provider’s profits. This is an extra fee, and makes it hard to see the true cost of your currency conversion.

Compare the rate you’re given by Asda travel money against the mid-market exchange rate. If there’s a difference that’s probably because a markup has been added. If this is the case, you may be better off with an alternative like Wise.

An alternative: The Wise account

Not all currency services add a markup to the mid-market exchange rate. Instead, Wise passes the mid-market exchange rate on to customers, and uses a low transparent fee for conversion, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for your travel money, every time.

To make travel money easy, consider getting a free online Wise account . You’ll be able to top up your account in pounds and switch to any of dozens of different currencies within the account, using the mid-market exchange rate. You can then spend or withdraw your foreign currency using your linked Wise Mastercard debit card. Simple.

You’ll only ever pay a small charge for currency conversion, and ATM withdrawals are free up to the value of £200 a month. All in all, that can work out up to 7x cheaper than using a bank or a competitor service.

Asda buy back service

If you come back from your trip with unused travel money you may be able to sell it back to Asda travel money through the buy back service.

Typically only foreign currency notes can be returned - and the exchange rate which will be used will be different to the rate that was applied when you switched your money in the first place. That’s because currency services often use different exchange rates when buying and selling foreign currency. Make sure you understand the rate which will be used before you proceed, to avoid any surprises.

Switching your currency back after your trip will usually mean you pay more in fees and exchange rate markups. Instead, use a service like the Wise account to manage your money more flexibly and top up and exchange currency as you go. That way you’ll be able to convert only what you need, when you need it.

Doing some research into the different options available is the best way to get a good deal on your travel money. Compare the fees and rates available from Asda travel money with a specialist provider like Wise , and you might find you can save .

A strong US stock market rally today is being described as a "Trump bounce".

Market commentators credited the prospect of a big sympathy vote for the former president-turned presidential hopeful after the failed assassination attempt at the weekend.

As such, investors were pricing in a greater chance of him winning a second term in November.

The S&P 500 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average both hit new record highs as hopes grew for investor-friendly policies ahead, such as extended tax cuts and looser regulation.

Trump Media & Technology Group was one of the most actively traded shares.

They were up 34%.

On this side of the Atlantic, the FTSE 100 was on course to close about 0.8% down.

Burberry was the biggest faller, down 16%, following a weak trading update that prompted the luxury brand to cancel is dividend.

The Welsh government is considering restricting free refills of sugary soft drinks in restaurants - potentially impacting fans of Nando's, Five Guys, Pizza Hut and Popeyes.

It has launched a consultation in an attempt to encourage people to make "healthier choices".

Eluned Morgan, Labour cabinet secretary for health and social care, said more than 60% of the population is "living with obesity or overweight".

She is proposing a "package of measures to improve the health of our food environments across Wales".

It is proposed that retailers be prohibited from placing HFSS products (high in fat, salt and sugar), in areas such as aisle ends and checkout/queueing areas.

There could also be restrictions on promotions.

Restaurants would be exempt from price and location promotions, "except in the case of free refills of sugar-sweetened beverages".

It is being proposed that "failure to comply with an improvement notice" could result in the "option of issuing a fixed monetary penalty of £2,500".

Grandparents in Sweden are eligible for paid parental leave under a new law aimed at extending childcare benefits beyond children's immediate family.

The programme, launched at the start of this month, allows parents to transfer a portion of their parental leave days to other caretakers, including grandparents.

The law enables single parents to transfer up to 90 days of paid leave to other caregivers and a parental couple to transfer up to 45 days, according to the Swedish government's Social Insurance Agency.

This comes 50 years after the country became the first ever nation to introduce paid parental leave that could be split between both parents - and many countries, including the UK, copied.

Dozens of tonnes of fake olive oil worth more than €900,000 (£757,000) have been seized in Italy.

Authorities confiscated a total of 71 tonnes of the "oily substance", with 42 tonnes of it boxed and ready to be sold as Italian extra virgin olive oil, one of Italy's biggest national police forces said.

Seven people were allegedly behind the counterfeit goods, with the Carabinieri accusing them of criminal conspiracy, adulteration of food substances intended for marketing, fraud in public military supplies and adulteration of food for export.

"During the operations, several boxes and warehouses used by the suspects were searched, seizing 71 tonnes of oily substance, contained in plastic tubs and cans of various sizes," it said .

Equipment used for packaging and distribution, including 1,145 customs excise duty stamps and labels claiming the oil was "extra virgin", have also been taken by officers.

The investigation comes as the price of olive oil continues to soar in the UK - the cost of a 500ml bottle has risen from £6.16 in May 2023 to £8.60, according to the latest data.

The Money team has previously found a bacterial disease, criminal gangs, changing weather patterns and Brexit have all played a part in the increases.

As we reported in our markets update below, the pound has held its recent gains against the dollar, with one pound buying $1.2982. It's also at a near two-year high against the euro - £1 equals €1.1912.

So, this could be the perfect time to buy your holiday money.

Recently, we spoke with three travel experts to find out when, where and how to pay abroad in order to make the most of your pound.

CREDIT CARD

"The  cheapest way to spend overseas is often on plastic , if you've got the right plastic," said James Jones, head of consumer affairs at Experian.

"Using credit and debit cards can be a great way to get the very best exchange rates."

He said rates offered by currency exchange shops are usually "much less attractive" than those offered on some cards, which were much closer to the rates the banks use themselves.

Fees could wipe out any gains

But it's essential to be aware of things like non-sterling transaction fees, cash withdrawal fees and credit card interest.

So shop around for a card with travel rewards, Mr Jones said - and do this before your trip.

"You probably need to give yourself, ideally, six weeks."

Extra protection

When you book a trip between £100 and £30,000, try and pay for some of it on a credit card to get "extra protection" under section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act, said Mr Jones.

That means the card provider is jointly responsible with the retailer if something goes wrong, such as arriving at a hotel only to find it has closed down.

If you are using a credit card, make sure you are can pay it off in full to avoid interest charges, said Sean Tipton from the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA).

One trap you must not falling into

An increasingly common trap when paying with card (credit or debit) is being presented with the option to pay in the local currency or in pounds, said Mr Jones and Mr Tipton.

While paying in sterling might "seem like a wonderful convenience" you will ultimately be paying "quite a bit more for the purchase", Mr Jones said.

If you pay in pounds, the local retailer's bank sets the exchange rate, but if you pay in the local currency, your UK bank sets the rate.

DEBIT CARDS

"Some service providers don't apply fees for overseas use on their regular UK debit cards," says Moneyfacts - but you must always check as some incur big fees.

Alternatively, "some service providers offer specialist travel debit cards that don't impose non-sterling transaction fees and cash withdrawal fees".

PREPAID TRAVEL CARDS

If you're looking to avoid a credit check, prepaid cards can be loaded with multiple currencies and work like a debit card, without being connected to your bank.

"Typically, prepaid travel cards will offer competitive or even no charges for foreign usage, which can make them a cheaper alternative to using a normal credit or debit card while on holiday," says MoneyFacts.

One of the most popular prepaid cards, Revolut, uses its own exchange rates, which might not always be the best you can find - and while it is fee free on weekdays, there are charges at weekends, so do your research.

Also be aware - prepaid cards do not offer purchase protection like a credit card and aren't regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority.

"Don't rely solely on a card - it can backfire on you if you do," said Mr Tipton.

Some taxis only take cash, leaving you to face hefty charges withdrawing from an ATM.

In some countries, like Argentina, it can be difficult to get money out of ATMs without a local bank account, Mr Tipton said.

Mr Jones added: "If you're in a very remote part of the world that actually doesn’t have many ATMs and maybe where cash is king, then that might dictate what you need to do."

Where and when to get cash

"I'd strongly recommend [to] get some cash out in the UK," said Mr Tipton.

It can be difficult to find a bureau de change in some developing nations, and ATMs have "started introducing quite hefty charges" across the board, he said.

The exceptions are countries with really high inflation rates, where it may make more sense to get cash out when you arrive, he added.

When to exchange currency really depends on the destination, said Laura Plunkett, head of travel money at the Post Office.

"Exchange rates change frequently, so if you have time, do your homework and lock in a rate when it is good."

What is a good exchange rate for Europe?

Some 80% of British holidays abroad take place in the Eurozone, said Mr Tipton.

The rate has remained "fairly stable", but if you see the pound increasing in value that may be the time to buy a larger amount of Euros for a couple of years in advance, he added.

Mr Tipton said 1.2 to the pound is a "pretty healthy" time to buy, but "it is a bit of a lottery".

Every year the pound gets stronger against the South African rand, and the same in Argentina, where the peso is "unbelievably weak", Mr Tipton suggested.

In store or online?

"Most online suppliers will insist on a minimum order value that might be too high for some people, and you'll have to make sure that you're home for when it's delivered," said Ms Plunkett.

"But typically, rates are better online if that's an option for you."

Burberry has ousted its chief executive and announced the appointment of a new CEO this morning.

The move came as the luxury British fashion brand scrapped shareholder payments and reported a "disappointing" financial performance and a "more challenging than expected" business transition.

The company said it expected to make a loss in the first half of the year if current trends persist, as previously identified weakness had "deepened".

Taking up the reins is former Michael Kors boss Joshua Schulman.

Following the update, Burberry's share price was down 12.5%.

The index Burberry is a constituent of, the FTSE 100, was down 0.4%, as was the larger FTSE 250 which comprises more UK companies listed on the London Stock Exchange.

The price of oil, as measured by a barrel of Brent crude, is slightly lower than it has been for most of the past four weeks at $84.79 a barrel, but it is still above May and June prices.

The pound has held its gains against the dollar, with one pound buying $1.2982. It's also at a near two-year high against the euro - £1 equals €1.1912.

After the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump, the cryptocurrency Bitcoin enjoyed another steep rise, though is still below the all-time high reached in March.

A box of Celebrations has been quietly shrunk.

It doesn't quite mean Christmas is cancelled - but there may be even more bickering than usual as there'll be on average five fewer sweets to choose from.

We mentioned that the shrinkage had been implemented quietly - firms don't usually advertise these things and instead we got wind of the 600g box becoming 550g via a warehouse worker who posted this on X...

The Money team contacted Mars Wrigley for comment - we haven't heard back but when approached by The Grocer , a spokeswoman said the business had "been actively trying to find ways to absorb the rising costs of raw materials and operations".

"Unfortunately, the growing pressures mean more needs to be done.

"Reducing the size of our products is not a decision we have taken lightly but it is necessary for shoppers to still be able to enjoy their favourite Celebrations treats without compromising on quality or taste," she added.

Mars Wrigley has also shrunk the tub itself, she said, "to reduce the plastic used in the packaging by 17%."

On whether the cost of a box would come down, the spokeswoman said: "Pricing is at the sole discretion of the retailer."

It would seem fairly pointless to shrink the product because of rising costs and then also reduce the price - but let's see.

The Grocer has pointed out that Mars Wrigley has shrinkflation form in recent years - impacting Twix, Maltesers, Galaxy bars and Starburst.

Barclays has launched a £175 incentive for new customers to bank with them.

The cash can be claimed by switching to a Barclays Bank Account or Premier Current Account by 30 August.

But the majority of switchers will have to pay a £5 monthly fee to be eligible.

In order to qualify for the free cash with a Barclays Bank Account, customers must pay for a Blue Rewards subscription in the Barclays app.

The recently revamped Blue Rewards comes with Apple TV+, a Major League Soccer season pass and cashback incentives.

Still interested? Then you need to use the current account switch service, pay in at least £800 and move over at least two direct debits.

The alternative is to open a Premier Current Account, which is only available to those with an income of £75,000 or at least £100,000 in savings or investments with Barclays.
