Is An Ocean View Cabin Worth It? Pros & Cons

Are ocean view cabins worth it

Sharing is caring!

As cruise prices are rising, you might be wondering if oceanview cabins are worth it. These economical cabins are more expensive than inside rooms, but often much cheaper than balcony cabins.

The truth is that we rarely talk about ocean view cabins. While these ocean view rooms have their pros and cons, they might be worth considering on a future cruise.

I’ve been on over 30 cruises and have cruised in interior staterooms, balconies and an occasional mini suite. However, on a recent last-minute cruise we opted for an ocean view cabin. This cabin was about half the price of a balcony and approximately $50 more than an interior cabin (for a four day cruise).

While ocean view cabins might not be right for everyone, here are my thoughts on the pros and cons of booking this unique cruise cabin .

Pros of Booking an Ocean View Cabin

ocean view cabin Royal Caribbean Freedom of the Seas

Typically, an ocean view cabin is much cheaper than a balcony cabin and only a bit more expensive than an interior cabin . As someone who has sailed in an interior, ocean view, and balcony stateroom, I can say that having an ocean view was a great experience.

If you’re used to booking balcony cabins but looking for a more economical way to cruise, an ocean view cabin is a money saver. Since I don’t spend much time in my cabin, I found my ocean view stateroom to be a great value.

When considering your options for an ocean view cabin, comparing the cost a good idea. If the ocean view stateroom falls within the same price range as an interior cabin, it’s a decision that’s definitely worth the extra investment. The added value of waking up to an amazing ocean view is worth the price!

Natural Light

One of the benefits of booking an ocean view cabin is the natural light. Compared to an interior cabin, ocean view cabins provide natural light and stunning views of the ocean, such as the sight of marine life in the ocean or a stunning sunset over the horizon.

While inside cabins are a budget-friendly option, they do have a big drawback – the lack of natural light.

This can make it difficult to gage the weather or the time of day. However, with an ocean view cabin, you have the practical advantage of natural daylight, which eliminates these uncertainties.

Furthermore, walking into your stateroom and viewing the ocean is always great. It’s also nice to sit with a book and relax by your ocean view window.

Unique Point of View

When booking an ocean view stateroom, you’ll get a unique view of the ocean.

In contrast to a balcony cabin, ocean view cabins are on cruise ships’ lower decks, making them closer to the water. Being closer to the water is a unique experience, as the waves are only a few meters from your ocean view window.

On my last Royal Caribbean cruise , the thrill of seeing the waves up close from my ocean view stateroom was a great experience. In contrast, a balcony cabin offers a great view of the ocean, but the experience is different as you’re higher up on the cruise ship, further away from the waves.

Whether you prefer to be closer to the ocean or further away from it, experiencing the up-close view from an ocean view cabin is certainly an amazing experience.

Size of Cabin

One of the key advantages of booking an ocean view cabin is that it usually is a similar size to a standard balcony cabin. Take, for example, the Oasis of the Seas , where both the ocean view cabins and the balcony cabins are a comfortable 180 square feet . The only difference is that the balcony cabin provides an extra 50 square feet of outdoor space.

When you take into account that a balcony cabin can be nearly double the price of an ocean view cabin, the fact that they offer the same stateroom size makes an ocean view cabin an excellent value, ensuring you get the most out of your cruise experience.

That said, cabins sizes can vary depending on the cruise line and the cruise ship. Before finalizing your stateroom, ensure that it is the ideal size for your cruise vacation needs.

Same Cruise Experience

A misconception that new cruisers often have is that the cruise experience will vary depending on your cabin type. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth.

Whether you’re in an inside cabin, ocean view cabin, or balcony cabin, you will have the same cruise experience. Unless you are in a suite, you will have access to the same services, amenities, activities, venues, and entertainment options.

Cons of Booking an Ocean View Cabin

Cabin location.

One of the trade-offs of choosing an ocean view stateroom is its location. Typically, these cabins are situated on the lower decks, which means you’ll be a bit further from the lido deck and promenade deck, potentially requiring more walking or time waiting for the elevators.

While there’s nothing wrong with being on deck 1, 2 or 3, some people prefer to be on higher decks.

Many cruise ships also have forward facing oceanview cabins. These rooms are often a bit larger than average. However, being in the front of the ship is considered to be one of the worst cabin locations by many.

For those who prioritize convenience, the middle decks are usually the most suitable. However, it’s important to note that these decks are often reserved for interior, balcony, mini-suite staterooms and suites.

One undeniable advantage of being on a lower deck is the reduced risk of motion sickness . As a general rule, the lower you are on the cruise ship, the less you’ll feel the motion of the ocean.

This can be a significant comfort factor for many travelers, especially those who are prone to seasickness.

Window Does Not Open

This might seem obvious if you’ve cruised before. However, first-time cruisers may be surprised by this to know that the windows inside an ocean view cabin do not open!

If you’re a cruiser who enjoys the natural ocean breeze, you prefer may prefer a balcony cabin. However, if you don’t plan on spending much time in your cabin, there are plenty of places around the cruise ship where you can enjoy a similar experience.

Not Ideal for Watching The Ocean

In my experience, an ocean view cabin is not ideal for watching the ocean. On our recent Royal Caribbean cruise, the window was behind the bed, so sitting down and looking into the water wasn’t particularly comfortable.

While I appreciated an ocean view cabin’s abundance of natural light, the room configuration could have been better for looking into the ocean.

However, on some cruise lines, ocean-view cabins have panoramic windows and floor-to-ceiling windows. Therefore, it’s important to check on what kind of ocean view you are getting before finalizing your cabin selection.

Are ocean view cabins worth it

Is an Ocean View Cabin Worth It?

When it comes to cruising, there are two types of passengers: those who spend a lot of time in their cabin and those who don’t.

If you prefer to spend time around the cruise ship instead of inside your cabin, you will enjoy an ocean view cabin. For the price, an ocean view cabin offers tremendous value, serving as the perfect upgrade from an inside cabin.

If you’re a cruiser who enjoys spending time in your cabin and having your own outdoor space, then you’ll prefer a balcony cabin. The feeling of staring out of your ocean view window doesn’t compare to relaxing outside on your balcony.

However, balcony staterooms can be quite pricey, making ocean view cabins a solid value and a great middle-ground between interior and balcony staterooms.

Ultimately, the value of ocean view cabins shines through when they are in the same price range as an interior cabin. If an ocean view cabin is priced similarly to a balcony cabin, then you may want to consider investing the extra money in the balcony stateroom for an enhanced cruising experience .

Final Thoughts On Is An Ocean View Cabin Worth It?

While there are certainly several pros and cons to sailing in an ocean view cabin, one undeniable advantage is their affordability. An ocean view cabin offers a great value, serving as a comfortable middle ground between an interior cabin and a balcony cabin.

Ultimately, the decision to book an ocean view cabin or not rests on your personal preferences, desires and needs.

If you’re the type who doesn’t spend much time in your cabin and appreciates the natural light, then an ocean view cabin might be your best bet. On the other hand, if you value your personal space and enjoy the luxury of relaxing outdoors, a balcony cabin could be the perfect choice for you.

Choosing your cruise cabin: balcony or oceanview retreat.

An image that captures the essence of a luxurious cruise cabin dilemma

The world is yours to explore, so why not do it in style aboard a cruise? When planning my upcoming voyage across the ocean, I am faced with the decision of selecting either a balcony cabin or an oceanview stateroom. Each option offers its own advantages and characteristics, ultimately coming down to individual preference.

Balcony cabins offer the luxury of a private outdoor space, complete with a small veranda and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors. They provide a secluded haven where I can relax and take in the breathtaking views.

On the other hand, oceanview cabins offer plenty of natural light through their rectangular picture windows or round portholes, allowing me to soak in the beauty of the ocean from the comfort of my room.

Factors such as price, desire for outdoor space, location on the ship, and personal preferences for privacy or natural light play a significant role in making this decision. So, let’s dive into the details and explore the world of cruise cabins, helping you choose between a balcony or an oceanview retreat.

  • Balcony cabins provide private outdoor space and stunning views.
  • Oceanview cabins offer natural light and picturesque ocean views.
  • Balcony cabins are more expensive, while oceanview cabins are a more affordable option.
  • The choice between the two depends on personal preferences and budget.

Balcony Cabin Features

I love how balcony cabins provide a small, private veranda with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors, making it the perfect retreat on a cruise ship. The pros of balcony cabins are numerous.

Firstly, the floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors allow for plenty of natural light to fill the cabin, creating a bright and airy atmosphere.

Secondly, the private veranda offers a secluded outdoor space where you can enjoy the fresh sea breeze and breathtaking views. It’s a great spot to relax, read a book, or enjoy a romantic dinner.

However, there are a few cons to consider. Balcony cabins are generally more expensive than oceanview cabins, so they might not fit everyone’s budget. Additionally, if you’re prone to seasickness, being on an upper deck and closer to the ship’s motion might not be ideal.

Despite these considerations, the benefits of having a balcony on a cruise are undeniable.

Oceanview Cabin Features

Located on lower decks and throughout the ship, oceanview cabins offer natural light and picturesque views of the surrounding ocean, creating a serene and tranquil atmosphere for passengers. When choosing the right cabin, there are several oceanview cabin benefits to consider:

Factors to Consider

When considering factors for selecting a cabin on a cruise ship, it’s important to take into account personal preferences for privacy or the desire for natural light.

One of the factors to consider is the price comparison between balcony and oceanview cabins. Balcony cabins are generally more expensive due to the added feature of a private veranda, while oceanview cabins are cheaper and provide natural light through windows.

Another important factor is the location of the cabin on the ship. Balcony cabins are usually located on upper decks and midship, offering a prime location with easy access to amenities. On the other hand, oceanview cabins can be found on lower decks and throughout the ship, providing a variety of options depending on one’s preference.

Ultimately, the decision between a balcony or oceanview cabin depends on personal preferences and budget.

Are there any additional perks or amenities that come with a balcony cabin?

Ah, the allure of a balcony cabin. Yes, there are additional perks and amenities that come with it. Worth the extra cost? Well, it depends on your preferences. Let’s compare the value for money between a balcony cabin and an oceanview cabin.

Can you request a specific location or deck for your balcony or oceanview cabin?

Yes, you can request a specific location or deck for your balcony or oceanview cabin. When booking your cruise, you can let the cruise line know your preferred location for your cabin, and they will do their best to accommodate your request.

Are there any restrictions on using the balcony or opening the sliding glass doors?

There are safety measures and noise restrictions when it comes to using the balcony or opening the sliding glass doors on a cruise ship. These measures ensure the safety of passengers and minimize disturbances to other guests onboard.

Are there any cabins that offer a combination of balcony and oceanview features?

Yes, there are cabins that offer a combination of balcony and oceanview features. These cabins have floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors like balcony cabins, but instead of a private veranda, they have a large picture window for ocean views.

Can you upgrade from an oceanview cabin to a balcony cabin once onboard the ship?

Yes, you can upgrade from an oceanview cabin to a balcony cabin once onboard the ship. The cost of the upgrade will depend on availability and the specific cruise line’s pricing policies.

Cruise Embarkation And Disembarkation Tips For Smooth Sailing

An image showcasing a cruise ship's bustling embarkation process; passengers effortlessly boarding amidst organized lines, luggage being swiftly loaded onto the ship, and smiling crew members guiding guests towards a seamless start to their voyage

Hey! Are you all set for an amazing cruise adventure? Before you can enjoy the luxurious experiences and thrilling activities on board, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the boarding and disembarking procedures.

Trust me, I’ve been on my fair share of cruises, and I’ve learned a thing or two about making the whole experience smooth sailing from start to finish.

From the moment you step foot at the port, there are certain logistics and preparations you should keep in mind. Online check-in is your best friend, allowing you to choose your arrival time and avoid any last-minute airfare surprises. And when it comes to luggage, handing it over to a porter and keeping your valuables close is the way to go.

But don’t worry, I’ll guide you through every step of the way, from the embarkation process to the disembarkation procedures.

So, grab your passport, pack your sense of adventure, and get ready to embark on a cruise experience like no other. Let’s dive into these essential cruise embarkation and disembarkation tips for smooth sailing!

  • Plan logistics in advance, including transportation to the port and avoiding last-minute airfare prices.
  • Check-in online early to choose arrival times and be prepared with health forms, passport, and onboard charge account.
  • Take advantage of priority boarding privileges and loyalty status to reduce wait times.
  • Note all aboard time and ship time, as the ship will not wait if passengers miss the call.

Embarkation Process

I need to plan my logistics in advance, such as flying or driving to the port, to ensure a smooth embarkation process for my cruise.

Embarkation day is the start of my exciting journey. It’s important to choose the right homeport where I’ll board the ship. If I’m considering a repositioning trip, booking a one-way cruise is common. However, I must be mindful of the logistics involved in getting to and from the port. Last-minute airfare prices should be avoided, and it’s not recommended to fly in on the same morning.

To make things easier, I can check-in online early and choose my arrival time. When I arrive at the terminal, I should give my bags to a porter, keeping valuables with me in a small carry-on. At check-in, I’ll need health forms, my passport, and information for the onboard charge account. Depending on the cruise, passports might be kept at the front desk for immigration checks. Priority boarding privileges and loyalty status can reduce wait times, and elite guests may have access to designated lounges.

Once it’s time to board, I’ll use my keycard to swipe at the gangway. The keycard will also serve as a charge card onboard and ashore, making it convenient for purchases and transactions.

By planning my logistics and following these embarkation tips, I can ensure a smooth start to my cruise adventure.

Disembarkation Process

Upon reaching the end of a delightful voyage, passengers eagerly anticipate the moment when they can step off the ship and onto solid ground, akin to a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, ready to spread its wings and continue its journey.

Disembarkation is a well-organized process that ensures a smooth transition from ship to shore. Here are four essential tips to make the disembarkation process hassle-free:

Remember, a well-prepared and organized approach to disembarkation will ensure a seamless end to your cruise vacation. Happy travels!

Tips for a Smooth Experience

To ensure a seamless experience, it is important to plan ahead and arrive at the port early for a stress-free start to your vacation. When it comes to packing for your cruise, consider these tips to make your disembarkation process smoother. Firstly, pack a small carry-on bag or tote with your essentials, such as medications, change of clothes, and toiletries, as it may take several hours for your luggage to be delivered to your cabin. Additionally, don’t forget to bring important documents like your passport, health forms, and onboard charge account information. These documents are required at check-in and may be needed for immigration checks during the cruise. By being prepared and organized with your packing and important documents, you can ensure a smooth embarkation and disembarkation process.

What should I pack in my small carry-on bag for embarkation day?

For embarkation day, I recommend packing essential items in your small carry-on bag. Include items like travel documents, medications, valuables, a change of clothes, toiletries, and any necessary electronics or entertainment. These items will ensure a smooth embarkation day.

Are there any restrictions on the size or weight of luggage that can be checked in?

Sure, there are luggage restrictions on cruise ships. Oversized baggage may not fit through the scanners, so it’s important to check with the cruise line for size and weight limitations.

Can I bring my own alcohol on board the cruise ship?

Yes, you can bring your own alcohol on board the cruise ship. However, there are restrictions on the quantity allowed. It is important to check the cruise line’s policy regarding bringing your own alcohol. On embarkation day, make sure to pack your alcohol in your carry-on bag as it will not be allowed in your checked luggage.

Are there any special requirements for passengers with disabilities during embarkation and disembarkation?

Yes, there are special accommodations and assistance available for passengers with disabilities during embarkation and disembarkation. The cruise line provides accessible facilities, staff assistance, and priority boarding to ensure a smooth experience for all passengers.

What happens if I miss the ship’s all aboard time during disembarkation?

If I miss the ship’s all aboard time during disembarkation, the consequences can be significant. I may be left behind, and it would be my responsibility to arrange and pay for my own transportation to the next port of call.

Table of Contents

Location, location, location.

When it comes to selecting the perfect cruise cabin, the location plays a crucial role in enhancing your overall cruising experience. Whether you're cruising solo or with companions, the deck and position of your cabin can make a significant difference. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind when choosing the right location for your cruise cabin:

Wake and steam from the back of a cruise ship

Forward, Aft, or Mid-Ship

Deciding whether you prefer a cabin at the forward (front), aft (back), or mid-ship (middle) of the cruise ship is a personal choice that can impact your cruise experience.

Cabins located closer to the center of the ship tend to experience less motion, making them ideal for those prone to seasickness. Mid-ship cabins are also convenient to common areas of the ship. Cruise ships are so big now that it can take 10 minutes to walk from on end of the ship to another. So, if you have mobility issue or want to save yourself some time and steps the extra money for a mid-ship cabin may be worth it for you.

Aft cabins often offer stunning ocean views from the back of the ship, while forward cabins provide a view of what lies ahead.

Tip: If you want to save time and steps, look for a stateroom near an elevator. It sometimes is a bit noisier, but being close saves a long walk down the hall.

Low Deck or High Deck

Most modern cruise ships have between 16-20 decks! On a cruise ship, “high decks” refer to the upper levels of the ship (deck 8 or above), typically located closer to the top, while “low decks”(below deck 8) are situated nearer to the bottom or waterline. Each deck offers unique advantages, and choosing the right one depends on your preferences and priorities.

High Decks:

  • Scenic Views: Cabins on higher decks often provide stunning panoramic views of the ocean and surrounding landscapes. If you enjoy breathtaking vistas and sunsets, a cabin on a high deck may be ideal.
  • Convenience: High decks are usually closer to onboard amenities such as pools, restaurants, and entertainment venues. This proximity can make it easier to access facilities and activities without having to navigate multiple decks.
  • Less Motion: While not always the case, cabins on higher decks may experience less motion or sway from the ship's movement. If you're prone to seasickness or prefer a smoother sailing experience, choosing a cabin on a higher deck can help minimize discomfort.
  • Stability: Cabins on lower decks tend to offer greater stability during rough seas, as they are situated closer to the ship's center of gravity. If you're concerned about motion sickness or prefer a more stable environment, a cabin on a lower deck may be preferable.
  • Quieter Atmosphere: Lower decks are often quieter than higher decks, as they are typically located away from public areas and entertainment venues. If you value peace and tranquility, a cabin on a lower deck can provide a more serene onboard experience.
  • Affordability: Cabins on lower decks are often more budget-friendly compared to those on higher decks. If you're looking to save money on accommodations without sacrificing comfort, choosing a cabin on a lower deck can be a cost-effective option.

Man looking at the sunrise over the ocean from a cruise ship balcony

Portside or Starboard

On a cruise ship, “portside” refers to the left side of the vessel when facing forward (towards the bow), while “starboard” refers to the right side. Remembering these terms can be easy by associating “port” with “left” as both words are alphabetically before “starboard” and “right”.

Depending on the itinerary, one side of the ship may offer better views of coastal landscapes, ports of call, or scenic attractions. Researching your route and consulting with your cruise line or travel agent can help determine which side provides these views during your voyage.

However, many times it is difficult to predict exactly which side of the ship will see particular points of interest. I have never felt left out of seeing any scenery because of being on one side of the ship vs. the other. I do not typically pay too much attention to whether I am on the port or starboard side of a ship.

Above and Below

Before finalizing your cabin selection, take a look at the cruise ship map to understand what is located above and below your chosen cabin. Being mindful of what's above you can help avoid noise disruptions from public areas like the pool deck or the theater.

Similarly, being aware of what's below your cabin can ensure a quiet and peaceful stay without disturbances from areas like the engine room or crew quarters. If you are sensitive to smoke, you may want to avoid a cabin that is above or below the ship's casino and smoking areas.

Cruise ship casino

Cruising with Others?

If you're traveling with others, the location of your cabin becomes even more important. Consider cabins that are close to each other if you're cruising with family or friends. Sometimes, side by side cabins are not the best option, you can sometimes hear the activity from the cabins beside you.

Tip: Call the cruise line to book when you want cabins close together. They have real-time availability and offer great advice for cabin location.

Opting for cabins near shared spaces like dining areas or entertainment venues can make it convenient for everyone to meet up and enjoy activities together.

Choosing the right deck and position on the ship for your cruise cabin is essential for a comfortable and enjoyable sailing experience. By considering factors like proximity to shared spaces, motion sensitivity, and potential noise levels, you can select a cabin location that best suits your preferences and needs.

For further insights on the importance of cabin selection, you can refer to this ultimate guide to choosing a cruise ship cabin that delves deeper into maximizing your cruise vacation.

Cruise Cabin Size and Type

Choosing the perfect cabin size and type is a crucial decision for first-time cruisers. Let's really get into the various options available to ensure you pick the ideal space for comfort and enjoyment on your cruise.

Let's be clear, most cruise ship cabins are pretty small- including the bathroom. There will typically be a closet, bed, and a vanity area with enough room to walk around the bed. The bathroom will be a shower stall (no bathtub) with a retractable clothes line, ocean friendly shampoo and body wash; a sink and mirror with a few shelves (no outlets in the bathroom), trash can, and a toilet.

Interior vs. Ocean View vs. Balcony

When selecting your cruise cabin, you'll encounter three main types: interior, ocean view, and balcony cabins. Each type offers a unique experience, catering to different preferences and budgets.

Doorway and closet in a cruise cabin

Interior Cabins : These cabins are located in the interior of the ship and do not have windows or natural light. They are usually the most affordable option and are ideal for those who prioritize budget and plan to spend minimal time in the room.

  • Inside cabins are cozy retreats with no windows or portholes.
  • They offer a wide range of sizes and configurations.
  • Suitable for travelers who plan to spend most of their time exploring the ship and ports of call.
  • The most affordable option for a cruise cabin.
  • Ideal for those prone to motion sickness, as they are closer to the ship's center.
  • Perfect for shorter cruises and passengers who value the cruise experience over cabin type.
  • Lack of natural light, which can be a downside for some.
  • Sometimes have a smaller square footage compared to balcony and oceanview cabins.

Ocean View Cabins : Offering a view of the ocean through a window, these cabins provide a sense of the outside world while sailing. They are great for passengers who desire a glimpse of the sea without the higher cost of a balcony cabin.

  • Oceanview cabins provide large windows with views of the sea, offering plenty of natural light.
  • Some oceanview rooms feature a small table and seating area.
  • These cabins are often located on the lower deck, closer to the waterline.
  • Enjoy beautiful ocean views without the extra cost of a private balcony.
  • Oceanview cabins offer more square footage compared to inside cabins.
  • Great for travelers who want the benefits of natural light and proximity to the sea.
  • On older ships, some oceanview cabins may have obstructed views.
  • You can not open the window or get the fresh ocean air.

Balcony cabin interior

Balcony Cabins : Balcony cabins come with a private outdoor space where you can relax and take in breathtaking views right from your room. While they are a bit pricier, the added luxury and the ability to enjoy fresh sea air make them a popular choice for many cruisers.

  • Balcony cabins offer fresh air, natural light, and your own private balcony.
  • Square footage typically ranges from 185 to 220 square feet, offering extra space.
  • You'll often find twin beds that can be converted to a queen-size bed.
  • Sliding doors provide seamless access to your private balcony.
  • Enjoy fresh air and stunning ocean views right from your cabin.
  • A private balcony is perfect for savoring breakfast, reading a good book, or stargazing at night.
  • Ideal for couples and those seeking a bit more room to move around. This is a really nice place to wait for your cabin mate to finish getting ready.
  • On most ships, balcony cabins are often found on higher decks with great access to public areas.
  • Balcony cabins come at an extra cost compared to interior cabins.
  • The key difference is the private balcony, and whether it's worth it depends on your preferences and budget.

Limited or Obstructed View

Some cabins may have obstructed views due to ship structures or lifeboats positioned outside the windows. If the view is important for you to have a wonderful cruise experience then be sure to secure an unobstructed view cabin.

Suites and Special Cruise Cabin

For those seeking a more luxurious and exclusive experience, suites and special cabins offer larger spaces and special amenities. While they come at a higher price point, the added perks can elevate your cruise to a truly indulgent experience.

Many cruise lines offer cabins that are basically a “ship within a ship”. For example, Norwegian has “The Haven”, MSC has “The Yacht Club”, and Virgin Voyages has their “Rock Stars”.

When you purchase these cabins, you have access to areas of the ship, such as special pools, bars, and restaurants that are not available to anyone who hasn't purchased the same type of cabins. Many times you will have a special crew member assigned to you to help you make dinner, show, and shore excursion arrangements. Other privileges can include priority boarding, disembarkation and tender tickets when applicable.

For more detailed information on cruise embarkation, you can refer to my Ultimate Cruise Embarkation Guide: Everything You Need To Know article.

Being sure that you select the cabin that aligns with your preferences and priorities can make a big difference to your overall cruise experience, providing a comfortable place to relax and unwind during your vacation.

Amenities and Facilities

Embark on your cruise adventure knowing that the comfort of your cabin can make all the difference. Let's dive into the amenities and facilities that cruise cabins offer to ensure you have a smooth sailing experience.

In-Cabin Features

When it comes to in-cabin amenities, cruise ships go above and beyond to provide a cozy home away from home. Cruise cabins are thoughtfully designed to cater to your every need. Expect to find:

  • Entertainment : Cruise cabins are equipped with entertainment options such as flat-screen TVs, so you can unwind after a day of exploration. Cruise TV options are not like those at home, there is a very limited amount of choices.
  • Storage : Stay organized with ample storage space for your belongings, including closets and drawers to keep your cabin clutter-free.
  • Bedding : Enjoy a restful night's sleep on plush bedding and comfortable mattresses, ensuring you wake up rejuvenated for each day of your journey. Your bed usually can be configured into 2 single beds or 1 queen sized bed.

Whether you're relaxing in your cabin between onboard activities or getting ready for a night of dining and entertainment, these in-cabin features will enhance your cruising experience.

Access to Onboard Facilities

The location of your cabin plays a crucial role in your overall cruise experience. Opting for a cabin close to key onboard facilities can save you time and effort. Consider cabins near:

  • Dining Areas : Easy access to dining venues means you can indulge in gourmet meals without trekking across the ship.
  • Pool Deck : Proximity to the pool deck allows you to enjoy a refreshing swim or soak up the sun whenever you desire.
  • Fitness Center : If staying active is a priority, choose a cabin near the fitness center for convenient workout sessions during your voyage.
  • Spa: Being close to the spa is nice because you can wear your robe and slippers from your cabin to the spa for relaxation and treatments.

By selecting a cabin that offers easy access to the ship facilities that are of most interest to you, you can make the most of your cruise vacation without any hassle.

Budget Considerations

When choosing the perfect cruise stateroom for your cruise adventure, budget considerations play a major role in balancing cost and experience to be certain that you get the most out of your cruise vacation. Let's discuss some essential points to keep in mind when it comes to budgeting for your cabin selection.

What is a Guarantee? Pros and Cons of Allowing the Cruise Line to Choose Your Cabin

Opting for a guarantee cabin means that you allow the cruise line to assign you a cabin within a specific category or higher, without selecting the exact room yourself and many times you do not know what stateroom you are assigned until a couple of days before you embark.

The pros of this option usually include receiving a much lower price for your cruise and potentially getting a complimentary upgrade to a higher category if available, which can add extra value to your cruise experience.

On the flip side, there is a lack of control over the room location or specific features, which may not meet your preferences. It's a gamble that could result in a pleasant surprise or a slight disappointment.

So, if you feel strongly about having a particular cabin type or location, this may not be the the best option for you.

Key Factors to Consider

  • Longer cruises with more sea days may make a balcony cabin more appealing.
  • Consider whether you prefer a higher deck, lower deck, or a specific area of the ship.
  • Your choice may vary if you're traveling with family or friends. This may determine how much time you spend in your stateroom and/or whether you would like to choose cabins that are close together.
  • Newer ships are more likely to have modern cabin amenities and larger storage space.

Promotions and Discounts: How to Find Great Deals and Discounts on Cruise Staterooms

To make the most of your cruise budget, keep an eye out for promotions and discounts that cruise lines often offer. Signing up on the cruise lines' website or partnering with a travel advisor can help you watch for the best deals.

Many times cruise lines will offer sales close to holidays and at the beginning of the year.

By being flexible with your travel dates or choosing less popular sailing times, you can snag significant savings without compromising on the quality of your cabin.

During cruise shoulder season, which typically falls just before or after peak travel periods, such as summer or major holidays, you can often find great deals on cruise fares and enjoy more relaxed onboard experiences. The weather during shoulder season can vary depending on the destination, but generally, you'll find milder temperatures and fewer extreme weather conditions compared to peak season.

For first-time cruisers, you can benefit from more affordable prices, smaller crowds at popular attractions and ports of call, and pleasant weather for exploring both onboard and onshore destinations. Plus, you'll still get to experience a cruise vacation without the peak season crowds.

Another way to save is to cruise last minute. These deals come up 30-90 days prior to the sail date.

Remember, balancing cost with the desired experience is key for first-time cruisers looking to embark on a memorable journey without breaking the bank.

Reviews and Recommendations

When planning your cruise adventure, seeking out reviews and recommendations can be a game-changer in ensuring an enjoyable experience aboard your chosen cruise stateroom. Online research is a valuable tool for first-time cruisers to tap into the wealth of knowledge shared by experienced travelers and industry experts. Here's where to look for reliable insights:

Online Research

  • CruiseMapper : CruiseMapper offers a comprehensive database of cabin reviews and feedback, allowing cruisers to gain firsthand insights into various cabin options. Their platform provides detailed information and real-life experiences shared by fellow travelers, making it a go-to resource for evaluating cruise cabins.
  • Cruise Critic: Known for its extensive collection of member reviews, Cruise Critic's Cabins section showcases the best cruise cabins based on ratings and feedback from cruisers. Navigating through this platform can help you discover top-rated cabins and make informed decisions when selecting your ideal accommodation onboard.

By utilizing these websites, cruisers can access tons of information to assist them in choosing the perfect cabin for their upcoming voyage. This helps empower cruisers to make well-informed decisions, leading to a memorable and rewarding cruise experience.

  • A:  There's no significant difference; the terms are often used interchangeably.
  • A:  Not always. Inside cabins can be found on various decks of the ship, depending on the cruise line and ship's layout.
  • A:  Yes, many cruise lines offer family rooms with extra space and bunk beds for children.
  • A:  Oceanview balcony rooms have a private verandah, while standard oceanview rooms feature a rectangular window with a view of the ocean.
  • A limited or obstructed view  balcony means that something will be preventing you from a full ocean view. It could be the lifeboats or the protrusion of another stateroom.

Not “Just A Place To Sleep”

Remember cruisers, your cruise cabin is not just a place to sleep but a large part of your overall experience. By choosing your cruise cabin thoughtfully, you can help to ensure your journey will be exceptional! Happy sailing, and remember, we are with you from Shore To Cruise!

5 Pros of Booking Oceanview Cabins on a Cruise (+ 2 Cons)

I have been on many cruises – and I have often seen oceanview cabins advertised for a price that is not much more than an inside cabin.

You may be wondering whether it is worth paying a little more and having that ocean view.

In this article, we look at the advantages of having an oceanview cabin – and look at the disadvantages.

Azamara Pursuit Oceanview Cabin

#1 Natural Light

The major disadvantage of booking a cheap inside cabin is that it is always dark – you always have to have the lights on when you aren’t sleeping.

You won’t know if it’s midday or midnight – which is great for good sleep quality – but can be a little disorientating.

I often sail in inside cabins, and I always use a sunrise alarm clock to help solve this problem. Find out more about these helpful little gadgets here:

Sunrise Alarm Clocks – The BEST Inside Cabin Hack

If you have a window or porthole you don’t have this problem. You will know whether it is day or night – and what the weather outside is like!

You don’t want to be dressed in shorts when it is wet, cold and rainy outside – you might have to switch over to the “Bow cam” on the TV to see what the weather is actually like if you don’t have a window.

Consider a cheap upgrade to an obstructed-view oceanview cabin – the view might be restricted by lifeboats or safety equipment, but you will at least have the benefit of having some natural light.

Obstructed view cabins are available in both oceanview and balcony cabins. They can offer great value for money. See some real-life examples of restricted view cabins in the article below:

The Truth About Obstructed View Cabins – (Photo Examples & How to Find One)

#2 Good For Seasickness

It surprises many people to know that I do suffer from seasickness.

One of my best seasickness hacks is to book a cabin that is low down and central in the ship – here you will feel the least movement.

Ocean view cabins are lower down on the ship, below any balcony cabins. They are therefore very good for those who suffer from seasickness – or are worried they might.

Find out more about choosing your cabin to avoid seasickness here:

What is The Best Cabin Location on a Cruise For Avoiding Seasickness? (I’ve Tried Them All!)

Celebrity Infinity Docked

#3 Same Facilities, Less Money

If you book an oceanview cabin (or an inside cabin for that matter) you will have the same facilities inside the cabin as in a more expensive balcony cabin.

You won’t have balcony doors to your own private balcony area, and the square footage of the cabin is often smaller – similar to the size of an inside cabin – but with the benefit of the additional window.

If you are choosing a cruise itinerary where the balcony is unlikely to be used much, why not save yourself some money and try an ocean view instead?

Learn all about the oceanview cabin my brother had on the older ship Celebrity Infinity below. He had the room to himself, and really liked the cabin – despite its older design and style.

Compare the Celebrity Infinity oceanview cabins with a balcony cabin on the same ship here:

Celebrity Infinity – Balcony Cabins – Real Opinions and Review

#4 Great Views

When I booked my first oceanview cabin, I was surprised by how good the views actually were.

When you have a balcony cabin, there are curtains, patio doors, patio furniture and balcony railings between you and the sea.

In an oceanview cabin, you can literally stay in bed, pull back the curtains and watch the world go by. The views can be amazing.

Another advantage is that if the weather is bad, you can just sit back and watch what’s going on through the window. You don’t have to go outside and risk getting cold and wet!

Azamara Ocean view

#5 They’re Often Very Quiet

Because of the low-down position of oceanview rooms, they are usually in low-traffic areas – so you don’t get lots of people wandering by your cabin.

The main public areas on ships are often in the middle of the ship, or up on the top deck. You might find you are below these areas, and the only people coming down to your deck are the people actually staying in cabins down there.

You are unlikely to be near a nightclub, bars or the buffet.

My parents recently stayed in an ocean-view cabin onboard the Azamara Pursuit. They were just along from the Medical Centre and close to the Reception.

Azamara Pursuit is a smaller ship, holding only around 700 passengers – the Reception area was normally completely empty.

Find out in more detail about what they thought of their cabin here:

Oceanview Disadvantages

There are a few disadvantages to having an oceanview cabin.

No Outside Space

You have no outside space to call your own, so you won’t know what the temperature is like outside.

If outside space is important to you, book a balcony cabin – but you might find a balcony is up to double the price, depending on cabin availability and popularity.

It really depends how important having that extra outside space is to you – are you prepared to pay hundreds of pounds more for a few feet/metres of outside space?

norwegian prima balcony

Same Size As Inside Cabins

Ocean view cabins are really very similar in size and layout to inside cabins – but with a window.

If you are sharing the cabin with more than one other person, you may find it cramped. I have shared an inside cabin with three other people before – and although it is fine for a couple of days, any more than that, you might find it too much of a squeeze!

I often choose the cheapest cabins available when I cruise.

Find out about the cheapest cabins I have stayed in here:

If you think you need more room or are sharing with more than one other person, consider a balcony cabin or a suite.

Of course, balcony cabins and suites cost much more money. It really depends on what your priorities are when it comes to cruising as to whether this offers good value for you.
