More About Santorini
Undoubtedly the most extraordinary island in the Aegean, crescent-shape Santorini remains a mandatory stop on the Cycladic tourist route—even if it's necessary to enjoy the sensational sunsets from Ia, the fascinating excavations, and the dazzling white towns with a million other travelers. Called Kállisti (the "Loveliest") when first settled, the island has now reverted to its subsequent name of Thira, after the 9th-century BC Dorian colonizer Thiras. The place is better known, however, these days—outside Greece, that is—as Santorini, a name derived from its patroness, St. Irene of Thessaloniki, the Byzantine empress who restored icons to Orthodoxy and died in 802.

In July and August, the Cyclades are crowded and less personal and more expensive than they are at other times of the year. Walkers, nature lovers, and devotees of classical and Byzantine Greece would do better to come in spring and fall, ideally in late April through June or September through October, when temperatures are lower and the islands are less tourist-riddled. In late March the islands begin to burst with thousands of varieties of wildflowers, and sprightly crimson poppies dapple stern marble blocks; the sea begins to warm up for comfortable swimming in late May. Autumn's days are shorter, but the sea remains alluringly swimmable well into October. Autumn travel to the islands also brings rustic pleasures: grapes are pressed in September, and zesty olives are gathered and fields plowed in October.
Top Experiences
Sunset in Oia : This will be a tourist heavy activity, but the sunsets and views are amazing. If it is too busy, try Imerovigli instead.
Black Sand Beaches : Try Perivolos and Perissa for an enjoyable day at the beach with lots of amenities. The areas are lined with cafes, shops, restaurants, and beach bars.
Ancient Thira : The remains of an ancient city that was inhabited 2,000 years ago. You can drive the narrow road with many hairpin turns or take a bus from Kamari so you don’t have to worry about the drive.
Akrotiri Archaeological Site : An ancient Minoan settlement that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century B.C. It was buried in ash like Pompeii in Italy. Modern excavation has been ongoing since 1967. Many beautiful frescoes and objects have been found.
Boat tour : Sunset cruise or afternoon excursion in the caldera of Santorini. Many offer dinner, drinks and possibly the chance to go swimming or snorkeling.

Visit Santorini, Greece
- Things to do
A striking volcanic setting, traditional white houses teetering on cliffsides, and vivid sunsets make Santorini one of the best-loved Greek islands. Along with this, you can expect fine food and indulgent lodgings, local wines, multi-hued beaches and views that stretch beyond its cliff-cradled lagoon out across the sea.
I think that to appreciate Santorini, you want to make sure you visit it the right way. The towns on the caldera get really crowded, but I love the small towns, scenic hikes and unusual wineries away from the monied glitz.
Things to see and do in Santorini
Akrotiri, long-lost ancient city.
A Minoan city long buried under layers of ash, the Bronze Age site of Akrotiri displays a level of sophistication that makes it one of the most remarkable ongoing archaeological excavations in Greece.
The city was rediscovered in 1967 and has only been partially uncovered. But, it’s clear that it was a wealthy place with large houses decorated with detailed frescoes, hot-and-cold-water facilities, and elaborate drainage systems. Stone staircases lead to upper levels in the houses, large storage jars remain intact, and a loom workshop suggests a source of Akrotiri’s wealth.
The Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira houses finds from Akrotiri, some of which date back as far as the 17th century BC.
We can arrange for you to tour the site with a private guide.
Fira, whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches
Most of Santorini’s modern towns perch along the caldera edge, looking down over the lagoon below. Fira, the island’s capital, tumbles down the cliffs in a jumble of whitewashed houses and blue-domed churches. It’s also home to the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral, with its vivid mosaics, bell tower and richly painted frescoes.
From Fira, you can also walk out to Skaros Rock, a craggy peninsula with sweeping views from its little church. Or, hike the footpath along the edge of the caldera to the village of Imerovigli, about two hours away.
Hilltop town of Oia
Quieter than Fira (and, we think, more picturesque), Oia is a traditional hilltop town whose blue-domed churches are set against a backdrop of whitewashed houses and azure sea.
Cafes, tavernas, art galleries and craft shops border the streets, and the remains of a Venetian fortress crowns the clifftop. Below the town, down a long series of steps leading past blood-red cliffs, is the tiny port of Ammoudi with its brightly painted fishing boats and many tavernas.
Oia is undeniably handsome and particularly well known for its sunsets. Its reputation means it gets very crowded in the evenings, and you can view the same sunset from many other spots with fewer crowds that the village attracts at sundown.
Santorini’s other villages
The smaller towns and villages in the interior of the island are generally quieter than those on the caldera edge, though they can still get busy in high summer. At other times of the year, they offer a more authentic insight into local life.
Emporio, in Santorini’s southeast, is a tangle of narrow streets lined with traditional houses that surround a medieval fortress which, in turn, encloses a 6th-century church.
Nearby are the lively beaches of Perissa and Perivolos. Sleepy Megalochori, with its strong wine-producing tradition, and Pyrgos, with its Venetian castle and panoramic views, are other good bets to visit outside the main hubs.
Wine and vineyards
Along with its reputation for views, Santorini is one of Greece’s most important wine producers. Grapes have been grown here since ancient times, and it’s most renowned for its fresh, dry white wine. It’s produced in a unique manner, where the vines are trained into a basket-like structure that protects the fruit from harsh winds.
Many of the vines are centuries old, as the volcanic soil makes them immune to the phylloxera parasite that has devastated other wine-growing areas. The island is home to several highly regarded wineries, where you can take a tour or enjoy a tasting and discover more about the small but thriving Santorini wine industry.
Volcanic Santorini
Geothermal activity in and around the Santorini Archipelago reminds you of the islands’ tempestuous past. A walk along the cliff path on the island of Nea Kameni, a short boat ride from Santorini, takes you to smoldering craters, where an intense smell of sulfur fills the air.
You can also take a boat trip around the island of Palea Kameni to visit its hot springs or take a swim in Agios Nikolaos Bay. Here, geothermal currents keep the water the temperature of a hot bath.
Best time to visit Santorini
Santorini is a seasonal destination, with many properties only open from April to October. To get the best of the weather and avoid the summer crowds, we recommend visiting in April, May or October. July and August are peak season, when the island’s roads and villages can get crowded, and temperatures peak with highs of roughly 86°F (30°C).

Santorini: our complete guide to visit the most beautiful island in the Cyclades
To the east of mainland Greece, at the heart of the Cyclades, Santorini offers a fascinating destination. A giant volcano half underwater, the island towers over the sea. An unforgettable stopover in the Aegean Sea.

The best things to do in Santorini
Admire the caldera from the sea.
- pays : Greece
- aeroport plus proche : Santorini/Thira
To enjoy the best view of the natural harbour that outlines Santorini’s caldera, it’s best to arrive by ferry. This underwater crater is surrounded by spectacular red cliffs that form a dramatic jagged coastline.
Go around Nea Kameni’s crater
Santorini’s caldera was formed in the 16th century B.C.E., after the island of Strongili (“the Round One”) collapsed into the sea when the volcano reawoke. The eruptions that followed then shaped the islet of Nea Kameni . To reach the crater, you take an ash path that climbs up amidst a lunar landscape and the smell of sulphur.
Wander around Akrotiri, the Pompeii of the Cyclades
This is Santorini’s unmissable archaeological site . Engulfed by an eruption, the city remained hidden for almost 3,500 years. Today, you can step back in time and stroll around the town’s houses, cobblestone streets, shops, etc.

The most beautiful beaches on the island of Santorini
There is no shortage of exceptional beaches . On the south coast, Red Beach, named after the colour of its sand, offers a spectacular setting. While on the east coast, three more easily accessible stretches of grey sand form Santorini’s longest beach. Last but not least, on excursions to the volcano, it is possible to make an unforgettable stop in the hot springs next to the islet of Palea Kameni.

Practical info
When is the best time to visit santorini.
The advantage of Santorini and Greece in general is that it makes a pleasant place to visit all year round. High season begins gradually at Easter and ends between September and October. However, to avoid the crowds, it is best to choose the months of May and October.
How long to stay in Santorini?
Ideally, you should plan on four days to explore the island of Santorini. This allows you to leisurely make the most of the capital of Firá, the port town of Oía, and the routes, museums and villages inland. Keep half a day for visiting Nea Kameni’s crater.
What’s the best way to get around Santorini?
Like everywhere in Greece, it is possible to hire a car or scooter for more flexibility. However, as Santorini is very touristy, the island has an efficient bus network that serves most of the places of interest. And for excursions to the other islands in the Cyclades , most of the ferries leave from the port of Athiniós, to the south of Firá.

First time Santorini: top tips to have the best time on this famed Greek isle
Dec 7, 2021 • 5 min read

Santorini is a dazzling star of the Greek Islands, and it's extremely popular with tourists © Andrew Mayovskyy / Shutterstock
Santorini is the supermodel of the Greek islands, a head-turner whose face is instantly recognizable around the world: multicolored cliffs soar out of a sea-drowned volcanic crater, topped by whitewashed buildings.
With its reputation for dazzling panoramas, romantic sunsets and volcanic-sand beaches, it’s hardly surprising Santorini features on so many travelers’ bucket lists. If you're planning to join the crowd, here’s what you need to know for your first trip to Santorini .
Part of the Cyclades island group, Santorini (officially known as Thira, a name that encompasses the volcanic islets within Santorini’s orbit) sits in the Aegean Sea, roughly halfway between Athens and Crete.
The island is shaped like a wonky croissant, and the neighboring islets hint at the fact that Santorini was once circular. It was known as Strongili (the Round One). Thousands of years ago, a huge volcanic eruption caused the center of Strongili to sink, leaving a caldera (or crater) with towering cliffs along the east side, now Santorini’s trademark landscape.

Beyond the views, Santorini's vineyards and volcanic beaches
Santorini’s commercial development is focused on the caldera-edge clifftops in the island’s west, with large clusters of whitewashed buildings nesting at dizzying heights, spilling down cliff-sides and offering gasp-inducing views from land or sea. Fira , the island’s busy capital, sprawls north into villages called Firostefani (about a 15-minute walk from Fira) and Imerovigli (the highest point of the caldera edge, about a 30-minute walk from Fira). A path running through these villages is lined with upmarket hotels, restaurant terraces and endless photo opportunities.
These three conjoined settlements draw most visitors, together with the stunning and quite exclusive village of Oia in Santorini’s north. There’s a growing number of hotels in the island’s south, offering caldera views to the north and northeast. Akrotiri’s views come cheaper than Oia’s, but it’s a fair way from the action of Fira.
Santorini’s east coast is lesser known than the celebrated, elevated west coast. Here, the caldera-edge heights have sloped down to sea level, and volcanic-sand beaches and resorts offer a very different drawcard. East coast resorts such as Kamari and Perissa have a more traditional (and more affordable) island-holiday appeal: sunlounger-filled beaches, water sports, bars and taverna-lined promenades. The east coast’s beaches are lined with black sand. On the south coast, there’s a string of beaches famed for their multi-colored sand. The dramatic Red Beach is a traveler favorite.
The island’s interior is dotted with vineyards and traditional villages that let you see beyond the tourist hustle. Make a stop in Pyrgos for great eats and a wander through charming backstreets.
Food, archaeology, open-air cinema: things to do in Santorini
Sure, Santorini's views will stop you in your tracks and you'll get great glimpses into how A-listers travel, but there’s plenty more to explore, from a gorgeous open-air cinema to a cool microbrewery , wine caverns adorned with artworks, and cooking demonstrations and classes that celebrate Santorini’s growing foodie culture.
The obvious prime activity on Santorini is to walk the caldera edge and admire the views. Walks in and around Fira are spectacular, particularly heading north to Firostefani and Imerovigli along the caldera-edge pathway. Keep walking and you’ll eventually reach Oia, but be aware that this is no small undertaking and the trail beyond Imerovigli can be rough. It’s about 5.6 miles (9km) in all, and a good four-hour walk, one way.
Santorini’s lauded wines are its crisp dry whites and the amber-colored, unfortified dessert wine known as Vinsanto. Both are made from the indigenous grape variety, assyrtiko . About a dozen local vineyards host tastings (usually with a small charge) and some offer food, with scenery and local produce combining to great effect. Start your investigations at SantoWines .
Santorini’s intrigue reaches deep into the past, with the fascinating site of Akrotiri displaying a Minoan city destroyed by the volcanic eruption of 1613 BC. In Fira, the impressive Museum of Prehistoric Thera helps piece together the story of ancient Akrotiri.
Nature’s handiwork is on display from any waterfront seat come sundown, but prime sunset-viewing on Santorini is in Oia, where thousands of tourists flock to admire (and applaud) nightfall.
Any tour your heart desires can be organized, and there are dozens of agencies ready to help with winery visits, archaeology tours, sunset-watching and more. The most popular option is a cruise, and the classic itinerary takes in the caldera’s volcanic islands of Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni, including a stop at the former’s crater and the latter’s hot springs.

Accommodation with a view in Santorini comes at a price
If you can afford it, first-timers to Santorini should stay on the caldera edge to experience the full "wow" factor. Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia have hotels and villas with whitewashed interiors, terraces and infinity pools that have inspired marriage proposals, high-fashion photo shoots and many Instagram posts.
Unfortunately there are not a lot of places to stay in these view-blessed locales for budget-conscious travelers: caldera-view accommodations come at a premium, and they are in hot demand. You'll also need to book well in advance.
There are decent midrange options in Fira and Firostefani (less so in Imerovigli and Oia), away from the front-row panoramas. There’s also a great hostel and a budget-friendly campground (with rooms) on the outskirts of Fira.
If you’re more interested in a beach break or activities, stay in Perissa or Kamari (and catch the bus into Fira). The advantage of this is some respite from the camera-toting caldera crowds, plus more reasonable prices.

The best times to visit Santorini without the crowds
Peak travel time to Santorini is July and August, when prices soar and hotels, viewpoints and beaches are packed with tourists. The shoulder season months of April, May, early June, late September and October are better times to visit. Things are marginally quieter at the caldera edge, and considerably quieter on the east coast (where accommodation bargains are plentiful).
Don’t discount a winter break, when crowds are scarce (and prices low) while the scenery is still breathtaking. Santorini is working on positioning itself as a year-round destination.

Reach Santorini by ferry, catamaran or plane
Frequent ferries and high-speed catamarans link Santorini with Athens’ main port of Piraeus, Crete and various Cycladic islands. Check OpenSeas for ferry timetables. Santorini Airport has year-round flight connections with Athens, and summertime European connections. On the island, bus services are decent, if crowded in summer. Lots of companies also offer cars, mopeds and ATV four-wheeler bikes to rent.

8 Best Things To Do in Santorini
Updated April 21, 2022
Santorini's volcanic activity plays a role in many of island's popular activities, from swimming and sunbathing at the molten-dyed beaches (such as Kamari Beach ) to exploring ancient ruins once buried in ash ( Ancient Akrotiri ). Even the
- All Things To Do

Kamari Beach Kamari Beach free
Santorini's volcanic history has led to the formation of some of the more unique beaches in the Greek Isles, and Kamari is no exception. Sitting about 4 miles southeast of Fira on the island's east coast, this stretch of black sand is one of the largest in Santorini. The beach is backed by the town of its namesake, a popular resort area where you'll find numerous hotels , restaurants, beachside bars and shops. On the beach, visitors can take advantage of the available lounge chairs and umbrellas.
Travelers enjoyed the clear blue waters of Kamari and suggested planting your feet towards the southern portion of the shore. That's because the views of the imposing Mesa Vouno hill, where you can find Ancient Thira , makes for a picture-perfect Greek beach setting. No matter where you decide to kick back on Kamari Beach, travelers strongly suggest bringing protective footwear. The sand and pebbly terrain can get quite hot with the sun beating down on it, especially after a couple hours, so bring sandals if you're hoping to spend the day on the beach. Some visitors even suggested bringing water shoes, commenting that the underwater terrain at the shore quickly goes from sand to slippery solid rock.

Amoudi Bay Amoudi Bay free
For beautiful views of the caldera, descend the 300 steps from the northern city of Oia to the charming port of Amoudi Bay. Surrounded by striking red cliffs and dotted with white-washed buildings typical to Santorini, this little village features several quaint tavernas serving up the catch of the day. Aside from digging in the bounty of the sea, visitors can enjoy some swimming here, though the beach is rocky so you should bring appropriate footwear, especially if you plan on cliff diving (a popular activity in Amoudi Bay). On the small island of Saint Nicholas, seen from Amoudi Bay's beach, visitors can climb up stairs from the water onto the small, rocky island and jump from a designated point.
Travelers admit there isn't a whole lot to do in Amoudi Bay, but the quality of the bay more than makes up for the quantity of activities it offers. Visitors were dazzled by the beauty of Amoudi Bay and said merely dining alfresco was all they needed to soak up the site. Most strongly suggested to plan a trip in the late afternoon, as a sunset from Amoudi is a site to behold.

Fira to Oia Hike Fira to Oia Hike free
The best way to take in Santorini is to walk, and there is no better route than the one from Fira to Oia. This hike is 6 miles one-way and passes through four towns, including Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia. It's important to know that there is no marked trail or pathway for this hike (aside from a couple signs, according to recent travelers), but a matter of following the roads closest to the caldera. Along the way, travelers will find numerous sites worth stopping for, in addition to spectacular ocean views and picturesque towns. One of these is Skaros Rock. Today, this headland is a popular vantage point for watching sunsets, but in yesteryears it housed a castle that served as the prime meeting place for Christians during the 1800s. There's also numerous churches dotted throughout, including the blue-domed St. Gerasimos Church, which offers excellent views of the volcano. Once you hit Oia, you'll find Byzantine castle ruins open for exploration.
Recent visitors say the best time to start this trek is in the morning, as there is no shade and the afternoon sun may be too much for some. Travelers also said there are rocky elevation changes throughout, so plan to wear sturdy shoes and bring plenty of water. Many reviewers said they completed the hike in three hours or less, but also noted completion time all depends on a traveler's level of fitness as well as how often they stop. And with all the photogenic spots along the trail, be prepared to stop a lot. Even though the hike is considered moderate and time consuming, travelers agreed that this is the best way to experience Santorini's natural beauty.

Ancient Thira Ancient Thira
Separating Kamari from Perissa on top of Mesa Vouna is Ancient Thira. This archaeological site, which was first claimed by the Dorians (ancient Greeks) in the 9th century B.C., is home to ruins from the Hellenistic (Greek empire built by Alexander the Great), Roman and Byzantine (eastern Roman empire) eras. Stroll through Ancient Thira and you'll find ruins of ancient religious sites, a theater, old city administrative buildings and even a gym for military trainees.
Recent travelers found the ruins of Ancient Thira to be interesting, though many said the breathtaking views of the Aegean Sea were pretty distracting. Travelers who walked from the town of Kamari up to Mesa Vouna recommended the scenic walk if you're in shape; it takes about an hour to get up and there is minimal shade along the way. Along with the great views, travelers loved the low price of admission into the ruins in comparison to Ancient Akrotiri .

Santorini Wine Tours Santorini Wine Tours
When conjuring up images of famous wine destinations, one might think of France or Italy, but believe it or not, Santorini is considered a premiere wine destination in Europe. That's because the soil in which the wine grows in Santorini, which is partially composed of volcanic sediment, creates an interesting flavor difficult to find elsewhere. Not only that, but here, vines trees are often formed into circles and grown on the ground (instead of propped upright in rows) to protect the crop from strong ocean winds.
Wineries can be found all over the island, but most are concentrated in central Santorini. Santo Wines in Pyrgos is the largest winery on the island and considered one of the most popular in Santorini. Other choice spots among travelers include Venetsanos Winery in Megalochori (about a half-mile south of Santo Wines) and Domaine Sigalas in Oia. Travelers also enjoyed the Wine Museum Koutsogiannopoulos , found in Fira. Located in a cave, the museum showcases Santorini's history as a wine producer and offers visitors a tasting with their ticket. When visiting a winery, patrons tend to receive a complimentary snack, such as bread and cheese, along with their tasting. For those who may not have the time to make a day out of visiting wineries, many of Santorini's wines are featured in the island's restaurants. Ask your server about local wines or keep an eye out for Vinsanto (a dessert wine), Nychteri, or Assyrtiko, both of which are white wines.

Red Beach Red Beach free
It's important to know that since 2013, Red Beach has been on watch for landslides and vulnerable parts of the beach are sanctioned by rope for visitors not to enter. If you're uncomfortable visiting this attraction, but still want to get an eyeful of red cliffs, visit Amoudi Bay .
Located less than a mile southwest of Ancient Akrotiri , this beach earns its name from its towering red cliffs and dark sand. Travelers say the scenery is stunning – be sure to bring a camera to take photos of the stark contrast between the brick red cliffs and the aquamarine water. While the water may look tempting to dip your toes in, travelers strongly suggest choosing a different shoreline as the site of your beach day. Some even suggest skipping this spot entirely for a number of reasons. Travelers have said that there is no paved path to get to the beach. Visitors must park at a parking lot nearby then traverse a rocky pathway to the beach. Some said they didn't know how rugged the path would be prior to visiting and had great trouble making it to the beach without sneakers. Travelers were also keen to point out that the beach is small and unless you get there early or are traveling in the offseason, it can get very crowded very quickly. What's more, the rough, rocky sand made it hard for a lot of visitors to really kick back and relax. On the other hand, those who did enjoy their experience at Red Beach suggested hiking to the beach (with the proper footwear) to get a look at its incredibly unique geography and leave it at that.

Ancient Akrotiri Ancient Akrotiri
This fascinating archaeological site was first discovered in the late 1860s but its buildings date back to earlier than 17th century B.C. This former Minoan outpost, which, according to the Greek Ministry of Culture, is considered one of the most important prehistoric settlements of the Aegean Sea, was once a thriving port town. The city was later destroyed by a massive volcanic eruption, the same one that made Santorini look like it is today. Thanks to years of excavation, enough of the site has been uncovered (only one-third of the site is said to have been excavated) to allow visitors to explore. Here, travelers can look at multi-level buildings, loads of pottery and even drainage systems. What is absent, however, is any sign of its former residences. This has led scientists to believe that Akrotiri's previous inhabitants knew of the eruption and fled the island accordingly.
Most travelers were impressed with Ancient Akrotiri. Visitors strongly recommended securing a guide to take you around the site and explain its rich history. Otherwise, as other travelers who went without a guide noted, you might end up spending your time staring at a bunch of rocks. Some lamented the high entrance fee, especially the extra fee that comes with booking a guide, but those who did said the expense was completely worth understanding Santorini's fascinating history. To get a better glimpse of the frescos and other art found at Ancient Akrotiri, be sure to visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thira .

Museum of Prehistoric Thera Museum of Prehistoric Thera
Taking a trip to the Museum of Prehistoric Thera is a great way to finish exploring the ruins of Santorini's ancient cities. This tiny museum in the heart of Thira houses frescoes and other archaeological treasures found during the excavation of Ancient Akrotiri , which was destroyed by the volcanic eruption that made Santorini look like it does today. Some of the pieces here date back several thousand years (some of the pottery on display is leftover from 3,000 BC) and offer insight into early human life on the Greek Islands, making this an interesting place to check out if you're keen to learning more about the island's history.
Travelers who visited said this is best explored after your visit to Akrotiri, as many say it gives greater context to the story of Ancient Akrotiri. Also having an interest in art or history helps. As visitors who weren't big on either found the museum to be a bit boring. However, the museum is pretty small, so even if you have just the slightest interest, a visit here won't take up lots of your time (some travelers said they spent only about 20 minutes here).

Where is Santorini?
Santorini is an island in Greece, located in the Aegean Sea, 200 km southeast of Athens , 150 km south of Mykonos , and 140 km north of Crete . Flights to Santorini take 4 hours from London, 3.5 hours from Paris, 2 hours from Rome, and 1 hour from Athens. There are no direct flights to Santorini from the USA, Canada, or Australia.

How do I get to Santorini?
There are multiple daily Athens to Santorini ferries (4.5 to 6 hours by highspeed ferry). The islands of Naxos, Paros, Ios, Milos, Folegandros, Mykonos, and Crete (1 to 3 hours) will have direct ferries from April to early November, and sometimes year-round for Naxos and Paros. Flights from Athens to Santorini take less than 1 hour, direct flights from western Europe (London, Paris, Amsterdam, Rome, Venice) take 2 to 4 hours.

Santorini Ferry Port Video
How big is Santorini? Santorini has a population of 15,500 and a land area of 76 square kilometers (an area a little bigger than Manhattan). The length of the island is 16 km and its width varies from 1 to 5 km. It takes 45 minutes to drive from one end of Santorini to the other. What is the best month to go to Santorini? The best time to visit Santorini for good weather, boat tours, swimming, sunbathing, and nightlife is from June to September. If beach time and hot weather are not a necessity and you’re more interested in sightseeing, history, hiking, and exploring then late March, April, May, October, and early November are also great. What are the main towns in Santorini? The towns of Fira, Oia, Firostefani, Imerovigli, and Akrotiri cling to the 300m cliffs and have magical views of the caldera and volcano to the west. The beach towns of Kamari, Perissa, Perivolos, and Agios Georgios are on the east and south sides of the island (not the caldera).

Do I need a car in Santorini? A car can be helpful to have in Santorini, but it is not necessary. It’s easy to get around Santorini using their public bus service, which is cheap, comfortable, and reliable – especially if you’re staying in Fira, the central hub of the bus system. If you prefer renting a car in Santorini instead of relying on the bus, I recommend picking it up at the airport, even if you are arriving by ferry. (And remember that foreign drivers are required to have an International Drivers Permit in Greece.) There is a very limited number of taxis, and Uber is not available on Santorini, so private transport from the Santorini airport or ferry port is best arranged in advance through your hotel or through Welcome Pickups car service. There will always be a public bus to meet all arriving ferries. Buses in Santorini are comfortable, cheap, and have plenty of room for luggage.
Where should I stay in Santorini?
The best places to stay in Santorini are along the caldera in the villages of Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, and Firostefani. These towns have incredible views of the volcano, sea, and sunset. All of these towns are on the west side of Santorini.
What are the best things to do in Santorini?
The best things to do on Santorini include hiking the incredible caldera footpath, touring wineries, doing a boat tour of the caldera (with volcano hike/hot spring swimming/sunset), and visiting the island’s small charming villages. There is a vibrant nightlife with everything from wine bars to dance clubs but it’s never rowdy and the club scene is easily avoided if you’re not interested. The view of the volcano and Skaros Rock from the amazing Astra Suites Hotel in Imerovigli. How was Santorini created? Santorini is what remains from a massive volcanic eruption 3600 years ago. The eruption destroyed all settlements and created the caldera. The caldera is a lagoon of seawater surrounded on 3 sides by the steep cliffs of Santorini and on the 4th side by the island of Thirassia (which was part of Santorini before the eruption). The current volcano (on the island of Nea Kameni) sits in the middle of the caldera. It’s active but presently not at risk of erupting. This is a good video on the Santorini volcano .
How many days should I spend in Santorini?
Stay a minimum of 2 days and 2 nights. But there’s so much to see and do that it’s easy to fill 5 to 7 days. If possible, do one boat tour , one wine tour , hike the Fira to Oia footpath , explore the villages of Pyrgos and Emporio, and visit the historical sites of Akrotiri and Ancient Thera. You’ll also want plenty of time to wander the cobblestoned lanes and alleys of Fira, Oia, and Imerovigli. Then there’s nightlife and all the great places to eat on Santorini . Santorini does not have the best beaches in Greece – they’re mostly pebble beaches – but the swimming is divine. What currency is used in Santorini? Greece is part of the European Union, so the currency used in Santorini is the Euro (€). Most shops and restaurants on Santorini accept credit cards, but it is a good idea to have some cash on hand for small purchases like bottled water and snacks. ATMs are easy to find in all of Santorini’s main towns.

Most restaurants in Santorini, like Marinera in Fira, accept credit cards.
Is Santorini expensive? Santorini is known for 5-star luxury hotels, great restaurants, and high-end shopping but it’s easy to visit Santorini on a modest budget. There are no all-inclusive resorts on Santorini so the key to saving money is to choose hotels and restaurants not directly on the caldera. Enjoying the incredible views is free and cheap hotels in Santorini are plentiful, good value, and good quality. Watch a movie overlooking the caldera at Volkan Cinema in Fira. But for the best movie experience in Santorini head to the Kamari Open Air Cinema . What towns and hotels have the best caldera views? The towns of Fira , Firostefani , Imerovigli , Oia , and Akrotiri are perched on the Santorini cliff and offer incredible views of the caldera and volcano. Not all hotels in these towns have caldera views but many do and the ones that don’t are a short walk (sometimes just steps) from the caldera’s edge, so staying at a caldera hotel isn’t necessary to enjoy the views. Each town offers a unique perspective and there isn’t any one town with the absolute best views. Imerovigli generally has the best sunset views but even this is open to debate and each of the caldera villages has a reasonable claim to having the island’s best views.

Lonely Planet ranks Detroit as one of 'The Best Value Vacation Spots' for 2024

Global travel authority Lonely Planet revealed its annual hotlist of trending destinations for the upcoming year. To mark its 50th anniversary, their Best in Travel 2024 includes two new categories: best value and best sustainable options, noting traveler trends in seeking economical and ecotourism vacations.
Although inflation has been cooling steadily since the start of 2023, it won't be gone by 2024, putting pressure on many people's budgets. With increased costs of food, housing, transportation, and more, many travelers are looking to cut costs on vacations this year. But that doesn't mean cutting out vacations altogether. High prices mean budget-friendly travel is a priority.
After years of lockdowns and travel restrictions, people are still eager to get out and enjoy a change of scenery. Daniel Durazo, a spokesperson for the Allianz Vacation Confidence Index, expects that 2024 will set a new record for "revenge travel," taking a vacation to "get back" at time lost during the pandemic.
Hilton 's new study predicts that consumers plan to spend more on travel in 2024, with their budgets at the forefront of their plans. In that report, Kevin Jacobs, Chief Financial Officer and President of Global Development at Hilton, says that despite economic uncertainty, travel demand has remained strong as consumers continue to prioritize the value of experiences and connections over things.
Economical vacations allow travelers to satisfy their wanderlust while being mindful of their wallets. For the cost-conscious traveler, Lonely Planet suggests Algeria, Romania, Ikaria, Greece, and Normandy as often overlooked destinations that offer great value.
Head to the Midwest
Ranked as the top value destination by Lonely Planet, the American Midwest is cooler than you think, with cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit, and St. Louis offering an art and food scene that rivals either coast.
Food and Wine named St. Louis, Missouri, the next great food city thanks to nationally-acclaimed hot spots like iNDO, Sado, and Vicia, and crowned Steven Pursley of Menya Rui one of the Best New Chefs in the country for 2023.
As a bonus, half of all Americans can skip the expensive plane tickets and take a road-trip destination to Midwestern cities. A vacation to Cincinnati, the largest metro area in Ohio, costs 25% less than a trip to New York City and half the price of a San Francisco getaway.
"From James-Beard-nominated chefs to global cuisine and iconic fast food, one of the best things to do in Cincinnati is eat," says Monica Fish, a frequent traveler. "Trained at the top restaurants in New York City, enjoy the same caliber of meals at one of Jose Salazar's James Beard award-nominated restaurants. Pick from Salazar, a New American farm-fresh outpost, or Mita's with a tapas-like menu and killer cocktails. Or if David Falk's infamous Boca is out of your budget, drop into Sotto, his trattoria located in their basement space."
Europe isn't often considered a budget-friendly international travel destination, but Poland shines as one of Europe's most affordable places. Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel President, The Americas, says, "In Europe, as a rule, the further east you travel, the cheaper the destination."
Perched on the edge of the Baltic Sea, Poland offers a destination rich in history, food, and architecture. Berna adds, "At traditional restaurants such as Kurna Chata in Wroclaw, you can feast on pierogi with sauerkraut for less than $8, and pair it with a glass of wine for around $3. And wandering around the stunning streets of Krakow, for instance, is absolutely free."
Nicaragua is ranked as the third best-value location for travelers seeking a blend of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and affordability. With surf, sun, tropical forests, the cobblestone streets of Granada, and 78 nature reserves, there's plenty to explore.
Jeremy Scott Foster, Founder & CEO of TravelFreak says, "With a daily budget of around $50, you can easily enjoy this developing country's insanely cheap options. The stable inflation rate makes basic services and goods relatively affordable. When you visit, you should avoid booking hotel rooms or services online, as this can add to your costs. Most of the hotels that don't have an online presence are relatively cheap."
Nicaraguan food is often available at street stalls and local "fritanguerias" at prices significantly lower than tourist-centric spots, making daily expenses more manageable. Beyond black beans and rice, local favorites include chancho con yuca, which is pork with cassava, nacatamal, a corn dough stuffed with meat, vegetables, rice, and spices and then steamed, and tamuga, a tamale with ground rice, beef, and chili peppers.
Jim Campbell, CEO of Honeymoons.com, adds, "An often overlooked strategy is to travel during the wet season, spanning from May to October. Not only do these months offer a lush, verdant landscape due to the rains, but it's also when prices for accommodations and certain activities tend to be at their lowest, allowing for significant savings without compromising the richness of the Nicaraguan experience."
Explore Northern Africa
Algeria and Egypt are Lonely Planet's top value destinations in Africa for 2024, at number 8 and number 6, respectively. A three-hour flight or less from much of Europe, Algeria is one of the most exciting destinations for adventurous travelers. Enjoy train journeys, well-preserved Roman sites, and fine historic cities, like the pastel-colored hilltop citadels of the M'Zab Valley.
Egypt's Nile, the mighty Pyramids of Giza, and the tombs of Luxor offer historical sights that don't cost a fortune to visit. Travel planner Narcisa Rusu says, "Egyptian cuisine is not only delicious but also cost-effective. Local eateries serve dishes like falafel, koshari, and shawarma at very reasonable prices, making dining out an economical and flavorful experience."
Greek Islands, for Less
A hidden gem for budget-conscious travelers, Ikaria, Greece, offers affordable accommodations, delicious local seafood-heavy cuisine, and stunning beaches.
Nathan Russo, Director of Operations at Destin Vacation Rentals, agrees. "Ikaria is stunningly beautiful with plenty of things to do, yet tourism is relatively low, with most Greece tourists heading to places like Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini. Ikaria's peak tourist season is between June and August, but even then, prices aren't too high. Between December and February — that's when prices are at their absolute lowest."
For wallet-friendly trips that don't skimp on experiences, mark your 2024 travel calendars for these remarkable destinations offering unbelievable affordability.

Small group - great optional tour of several picturesque sites
This is great 1/2 day tour (actually 5 hours). It hits several highlights of Santorini, allowing for time to step off the bus and explore at each stop. All the driving and planning is done for you. The driver is exceptional as is the tour guide. Greek history and information about each site is provided by the guide. Highly recommend this tour.

The views were amazing and we had many photo opportunities. Our driver Fotois Tsevas was very informative and a lot of fun and made our trip very interesting.
Gregory our tour guide was very knowledgeable and passionate about the island. He gave many historical facts and answered our questions along the way. The musical instrument experience was not as expected, seeming to be more of a lesson in Greek mythology and Ancient Greek gods and having a type of psychic or astrological overtone. “But if it is disagreeable in your sight to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served, which were beyond the Euphrates River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you are living; but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” Joshua 24:15 NASB2020

The pick up was smooth and the bus comfortable with air con. Greg our driver was very knowledgeable and took great care of us. The visit to the music symposium we really enjoyed. The owner is clearly a very talented and gifted musician and his enthusiasm for his subject was lovely to see. This tour was an excellent way of seeing the island if you have limited time on the island or in our case, wanted an overview so we could then go back to spend additional time in the place we liked. The restaurant recommended at the black sand beach served delicious traditional food with reasonable prices given our table was on the beach. The only slight disappointment were the sheer volumes of people in Oia for the sunset…this didn’t in any way detract from the fab day we had. Recommend .

Recommended this tour through our hotel Very fairly priced & such a nice “snapshot of Santorini” Our tour guide was knowledgeable & really interactive & engaging Really enjoyed the fact the tour itself was over 5h long, collecting/dropping you off wasn’t counted as “tour time” We did the half day excursion- thoroughly enjoyed the trip to the church/monastery as a highlight of the day!

Gregory was awesome! Very friendly and informative. I learned more than I expected and having fun the whole time. From visiting the different castles in the towns , the music symposium, wine tasting and sunset in Oia.It was exceptional thanks to Gregory. I highly recommend this tour.
