National Geographic Expeditions Signature Land Itineraries: 2023 Bookings Open May 26

by Timothy Moore | May 19, 2022 | National Geographic Expeditions , News Outside the Parks

national geographic expeditions signature land itineraries 2023 - featured - nat geo

Disney has announced that its 2023 National Geographic Expeditions Signature Land itineraries will be available for booking starting May 26, 2022.

From classic Disney movies to Pixar to Marvel to Star Wars , Disney offers us plenty of ways to escape the world we live in. But one of Disney’s other properties, National Geographic, is all about exploring the very real places and cultures that inhabit our world .

And the National Geographic Expeditions are a way for fans of the magazine or just those with a thirst for adventure to get out and experience the very places and people the magazine covers.

Just Announced: 30 Signature Land Itineraries for 2023

This week, Disney announced the official launch of its 2023 lineup of National Geographic Expeditions Signature Land itineraries . For the 2023 calendar year, Nat Geo will offer more than 30 unique adventures in its portfolio.

National Geographic Expedition Signature Land trips are specially designed trips that allow travelers to see rare sites around the globe. These trips will immerse travelers in cultures and provoke curiosity about the untold stories across the globe.

What makes these itineraries extra special is that you’ll travel with actual National Geographic Experts — photographers, biologists, archaeologists, writers, filmmakers, conservationists, and researchers who have a special magazine for the kinds of stories National Geographic loves to tell.

The 2023 lineup includes a revamped favorite:  Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia: Ancient Temples and Natural Wonders . Let’s dive into what this trip includes.

This special itinerary through National Geographic Expeditions includes new experiences and past favorites. On the trip, you’ll encounter:

  • A sampan tour along the canals of Tan Phong Islet.
  • A cycle excursion through stunning villages.
  • A trip to the Cai Rang Floating Market in the Mekong Delta.
  • A visit to the Angkor Conservation Center to encounter thousands of protected statues.
  • A trip to the Golden Silk Pheach Preservation Center to see the fully integrated silk-making process, including raising silkworms.
  • Plenty of delicious and authentic meals , from street fare to tasty Vietnamese iced coffee — with a fancy five-course gala dinner thrown into the mix.
  • Historical sites like Emperor Tu Duc and Kahi Dinh Tomb s and the Purple Forbidden City .

Perhaps most exciting for fans of the magazine and the work they do is the in-depth look that travelers will get on two Nat Geo conservation initiatives: saving Vietnam’s Wildlife Rescue Center and the amazing project to protect the Asiatic black bears (or “moon bears”) at the Tat Kuang Si Rescue Center .

Departure dates for this special National Geographic Expedition start in Dec. 2022 and continue through March 2023.

Traveller Testimonials

Get an idea of what your adventure could be like from people who have enjoyed their travels with National Geographic Journeys.

I learnt so much about Costa Rica, its history, flora and fauna. I have some amazing memories and have made some firm friends from the tour. It was excellent and, as a result, I know I will be going back to Costa Rica in the future!

Jayenne C., Explore Costa Rica

It was a wonderful experience that I have already recommended to several friends. The accommodations were great and well located. Yoko was a well-organized, helpful and knowledgeable guide.

Patricia S., Iconic Japan

AMAZING! From being able to try such a variety of experiences, learning the culture and history to meeting NOW everlasting newer friendships from this vacation. This is by far one of the best, and most enriching vacations I have ever had—for both my husband and I.

Maria L., Explore Machu Picchu

Absolutely fabulous! This was the best vacation we have ever had in that we were part of a small group of people who all love the outdoors, learning and experiencing new places, foods, culture, and best of all, people! Our CEO was fantastic! He shared so much of his beautiful homeland with us through visits to hidden gems, meeting local people, sharing time and culture with the unique and lovely people of New Zealand. We hiked, we ate, we heard, we saw, we felt, and we laughed and hugged a lot! We left a piece of our hearts in New Zealand. What we took away from all this is a lifetime of fantastic memories.

Virginia D., New Zealand Journey

This trip totally exceeded my expectations. Our CEO, Moses, and driver, Edward, were both excellent and really made the adventure everything it was. They worked really well together and were really friendly, informative and enthusiastic. The wildlife itself was superb, better than I had hoped and because of the guys' enthusiasm I found myself interested in far more than just the bigger animals. The standard of accommodation and food was excellent and I really enjoyed all the activities included in the tour. The tour felt totally authentic, and it really felt like people were welcoming of us on the basis of the positive work done in the community.

Caroline D., Tanzania Safari Experience

This trip was truly an adventure worth taking. In one short week, I came face-to-face with 13 gorillas, sprinted through a forest in pursuit of chimpanzees, watched a mother hippo protectively shield her baby from our view, and listened to a pride of lions devour a buffalo carcass at sunset. Experiences like these provide lifelong memories, and as an added bonus, I made new lifelong friends as well. After planning this trip for over a year, the experience itself lived up to — and surpassed — my expectations in so many ways.

Kelley G., Rwanda & Uganda Gorilla Discovery

Great trip. I was especially happy with the National Geographic exclusives. The food we got at the Parwa Community Restaurant was one of the best we enjoyed in Peru. The visit to Parwue de la Papa was enlightening and enjoyable. The same can be said of the visits we did at Lake Titicaca — the Floating island, the Taquile Island visit and lunch hosted by the village on Luquina Peninsular. It is especially heartening and fulfilling to know that [the company] is actively contributing to the local community in helping these villages help themselves in a sustainable manner.

Wern L.C., Inca Explorer

This tour exceeded my expectations on pretty much all fronts. I was able to get pushed out of my comfort zone just enough by being in a place where the customs were different and I didn't speak the language, but at the same time I always felt safe. We were able to see the "real" Morocco in a way that other tours wouldn't have done.

Amanda R., Morocco: Sahara & Beyond

This trip was awesome. The cities, architecture, interiors, food and people were a photographer's dream. I've been to Spain before (Madrid and Barcelona), but Andalusia is truly special. The entire itinerary was great, and the exclusive experiences provided lots of insights into the destination. When I first read about learning to dance flamenco, I didn't think it would be a highlight, but it was so much fun and really made me appreciate the history, talent of the dancers and the show even more. I want to go back!

I love my job as a Journeys CEO for five reasons: 1. I get to meet new people I love meeting others and hearing their stories. It's so cool seeing their eyes light up while telling me what they're passionate about. 2. I get to talk about my favourite place Talking about your home , your family, and your friends — it's literally the best thing ever. Getting to share that sense of happiness and peace is the coolest thing.

I love leading National Geographic Journeys trips because you get to take your experience to another level that even I myself couldn’t dream up. It’s such a diverse continent I come from. And taking travelers through it is mind and soul enriching. There was a moment in Florence last summer when I was standing there with my group next to the iconic Ponte Vecchio after showing them around the beautiful city. I started talking about the second World War in Italy and Florence specifically. “Even if it doesn’t smell good, jasmine is still jasmine. Even if he isn’t elegant, a Hanoian is still a Hanoian.” My father used to recite this poem to me when I was a little boy. I will never forget what he told me about Hanoi because since I moved to this city, Hanoi simply became my second home. As a local who loves food, cultures, and meeting people, I see that many tourists are now stuck in the touristy area, which doesn't make them "really travel" to Hanoi, Vietnam. So I love getting opportunities to show people "The Real Hanoi."

Julian H., South Africa

I love leading National Geographic Journeys trips because I get to spend time with like-minded people that just love anything to do with nature. I get excited every time I see the joy in our travellers’ faces when they see their dream become a reality. Many times, people on our trips have been waiting their whole lives to come to Africa to see our beautiful land and creatures. For me it is a privilege to show them all that I can in the time I have with them. I want them to leave with a little piece of Africa in their hearts forever.

I get to talk about my favourite place Talking about your home, your family, and your friends — it's literally the best thing ever. Getting to share that sense of happiness and peace is the coolest thing. 3. I get to see others excited about being at my favourite place There's nothing quite like that feeling you get when you see that your stories are making people smile. 4. I get to walk around my favorite place for hours When you're having a rough day, a nice walk in Petra talking about how much you love its beauty is a good way to lift your mood. 5. I make a huge impact in people's lives Every tour I do, every person I meet, is an opportunity to change their life by bringing happiness and friendship forever.

I love leading National Geographic Journeys trips because you get to take your experience to another level that even I myself couldn’t dream up. One of my favorite parts of leading trips in North America is when I take people to the Grand Canyon. I get to experience their first sighting of the amazing layers and shear natural beauty that exists in the Wild West of Arizona. And then we all go behind the scenes and have a local expert explain the history and the detail that goes into the magnificent wonder of the world. I get excited each time we get to have a unique opportunity to speak to someone who studies the background and unique details that accompany our amazing National Geographic Journeys destinations.

It’s such a diverse continent I come from. And taking travelers through it is mind and soul enriching. Whether it’s traversing through the oldest desert in the world, the Namib, walking through the jungle of the Okavango delta, the largest inland delta in the world, watching hundreds of elephants drinking in Hwange National Park, or putting the icing on the cake by showing our amazingly rich culture. Sharing all this, sitting around a campfire with a beautiful night sky above us, I love to bring some of the stories travelers read into life by simply sharing all this with them.

There was a moment in Florence last summer when I was standing there with my group next to the iconic Ponte Vecchio after showing them around the beautiful city. I started talking about the second World War in Italy and Florence specifically. Then I pulled out a piece of paper and started reading: "Our pockets were filled with odd scraps of paper on which were written the names of the sons and daughters and relatives in America to whom we had promised to write that we had seen mother or uncle or cousin in Florence, that all was well, and that they were full of courage. One woman came up to us with a shy 16-year-old daughter and told us in English that she had waited to speak to the first Americans in Florence. She turned to the daughter and took two almost wilted roses and handed them to us. We have been looking for Americans to give these to, and you are the first. We are happy now." This is taken from a National Geographic published in March 1945. The words were followed by a moment of deep emotion felt by the group. For a second, it felt like we connected with those who were fighting to free the country more than 70 years ago. Moments like these are the main reason why I love leading National Geographic Journeys tours.

So I love getting opportunities to show people "The Real Hanoi." I like to take people to secret corners, small alleys, beautiful places, local street food places where they can take photos with real life styles of Hanoian, taste amazing local foods, or simply do Taichi or exercise with local people in the early morning. I'm proud to be a part of this beautiful city and I love having a chance to show people the real Hanoi.

Changing people's lives and showing them the importance and interconnectedness of nature brings me joy. A bit deep, maybe, but I do love what I do.

National Geographic has unveiled its annual list of the 25 inspiring destinations for 2023. Nat Geo’s “Best of the World,” is themed around five categories: Family, Adventure, Culture, Nature, and new this year, Community.

“We have experienced so many changes and disruptions in the way we explore over the last few years, so with this year’s list, we really wanted to get back to identifying positive stories about destinations and communities,” said Amy Alipio, senior editor at National Geographic Travel.

“With our team of travel experts and editors, we took a deeper dive into places all over the globe that are providing experiences that are unique and beneficial for both locals and travelers: locations where visitors ultimately sustain and support — not damage — the destination’s environment and community. We also worked hard to provide lesser-known gems on the list, equally inspiring alternatives to destinations that have become overcrowded (think Choquequirao vs. Machu Picchu in Peru).”

Here is National Geographic’s “ Best of the World ” list for 2023.

Luxor Temple in Egypt

These five destinations were chosen because Nat Geo says they allow you to immerse yourself in history and heritage.

  • Appian Way, Italy: Rome’s “Gateway to the East” is known as Europe’s ancient “superhighway.” It was selected for its ability to take you on a trip through history.
  • Busan, South Korea: As the nation’s second largest city, it’s known for its beaches, mountains, and temples.
  • Charleston, South Carolina : With its cobblestone streets and Low Country Cuisine, this city allows you to explore culture and history.
  • Egypt: Home to King Tut’s new home at Cairo’s Grand Egyptian Museum and Luxor’s Avenue of the Sphinxes, this country that links northeast Africa to the Middle East dates back to the time of the pharaohs.
  • Longmen Grottoes, Henan Province, China: This is one of the world’s largest collections of Chinese art of the late Northern Wei and Tang Dynasties, made up of 2,300 caves, almost 110,000 Buddhist stone statues, and more.

Eilean Donan Castle, Scotland

Described by Nat Geo as “wildly underrated,” these five destinations will spark a new appreciation for our planet.

  • Scottish Highlands : This mountain region in northwest Scotland has incredible scenery and is praised for its movement to restore the original landscape.
  • Botswana : Located in Southern Africa, this landlocked country is home to several notable animal species like giraffes, cheetahs, and hyenas and is selected for its programs to rehabilitate the species that are endangered.
  • Slovenia : This central European country is known for its mountains, ski resorts, and lakes and was selected for this category for being a longtime leader in sustainable tourism.
  • Big Bend National Park : This park located in southern Texas was chosen because of its surprising landscape.
  • Azores : This is an island region in Portugal known for nature and sustainability, which is why it was selected.

Canyonlands National Park in Utah

These five destinations are chosen by Nat Geo because they’re for those looking for adrenaline-pumping adventure.

  • New Zealand : If you’re looking for a post-pandemic adrenaline rush, you’ll be interested in this country known for adventure; after all, it did invent bungee jumping.
  • Choquequirao, Peru : This Incan site in southern Peru may not be well-known, but it will remind you of the architecture of Machu Picchu.
  • Utah : This landlocked state out west may be known for skiing, but was chosen for this category for the adrenaline rush you can get from the less visited parts.
  • Revillagigedo National Park, Mexico : Known as the “Galápagos of Mexico,” was selected because it holds one of the largest aggregations of sharks and manta rays in the world and is an iconic dive destination.
  • Austria : Located in the southern part of Central Europe, it’s known for castles and palaces, but is becoming more popular for cross-country hikes to sample local culture.

Pha That Luang in Laos

Chosen for being forward-thinking, these five destinations were selected by Nat Geo because they offer opportunities for meaningful travel.

  • Dodecanese Islands, Greece: This is a group of 15 large and 150 small Greek Islands, chosen for this category because there are women-led ventures and sustainable tourism.
  • Milwaukee, Wisconsin : This Great Lakes city is known for its celebration of breweries but was selected because it is becoming known for how it celebrates its culture.
  • Alberta, Canada : This is home to Banff National Park and iconic Lake Louise. The traditional countryside and contemporary perspectives come together here.
  • Laos : Located in southeast Asia, French colonial architecture, hill tribe settlements, and Buddhist monasteries come together here. Chosen for this category because of a new high-speed train that makes lesser-known regions more accessible to tourists and locals.
  • Ghana: This country in West Africa is becoming known for its fashion-forward capital, Accra.

Cartagena, Colombia

Chosen to “inspire the whole family in 2023,” these five destinations are family trips that Nat Geo says will help educate and illuminate.

  • Trinidad and Tobago: As the southernmost island country in the Caribbean, it’s known for beaches and nature. Because of that, it was chosen for its work saving turtles at one of the most important leatherback turtle rookeries in the world.
  • San Francisco, California : You’re probably thinking of the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, and steep streets, but it was chosen for other activities like Presidio Tunnel campfires and hiking the Crosstown Trail.
  • Colombia : Disney’s Encanto brought this country to a whole new audience. Enjoy the story while also birdwatching in this “avian paradise” of South America.
  • Manchester, England: With a rich industrial heritage, this city mixes history with sports as it’s home to Manchester United.
  • Switzerland : Take a train ride through this country famous for the Alps and chocolate. Take in hiking and skiing as you visit its quaint towns.

Train Trips - Travel was revolutionized with the implementation of the railroad, allowing people to travel in what was then a rapid pace from destination to destination. Today this ideal has been flipped on its head, and train travel is a leisurely paced excursion allowing time to relax and appreciate the slower meandering through beautiful countrysides. National Geographic train trips cover the classics, such as the Trans-Siberian railway and the Rocky Mountain railroad. Accommodations are comfortable, around a premium level, with options to upgrade.

Active Expeditions - For those who enjoy a bit more of an adrenaline pumping and active travel experience, National Geographic also has trips for you. These trips feature multiple active outings, such as kayaking, hiking, and caving. Expect to explore the outdoors covering unique natural phenomena and gaining insight into how and why the landscape has been shaped the way it has. These trips also feature cultural insights, just to a lesser extent.

Family Expeditions - National Geographic is the perfect company to travel with when you have curious and adventurous youngsters eager to see the world. They will learn about other cultures, people, food, nature and wildlife from experts with “cool jobs” that might even inspire lifelong interests and perhaps influence a career. These trips are specifically designed to be hands on, allowing everyone to get involved and learn about how things work.

Private Jet Trips - For a luxurious and more lengthy travel experience, nothing beats a Private Jet tour. A dedicated team will be with you, and you’ll experience all the best that National Geographic has to offer from local guides to premiere accommodation. These trips are in a very high budget range, but if it’s in your wheelhouse - it’s a superb way to travel and cover a lot of ground.

Journeys - Part of a partnership with G Adventures, these trips are adventurous and immersive small group excursions imbued with the spirit of National Geographic. The best of two top travel worlds!

The best travel destinations around the world for 2023, according to National Geographic

national geographic tour 2023

Got the travel itch? National Geographic has suggested 25 top destinations throughout the world for those looking to explore in 2023.

The recommendations, released Oct. 26, range from traditional U.S. destinations such as San Francisco and global travel hot spots including Egypt to ecotourism locations and lesser-known sites such as Choquequirao, Peru, the sister city to historic Machu Picchu.

“With our team of travel experts and editors, we took a deeper dive into places all over the globe that are providing experiences that are unique and beneficial for both locals and travelers: locations where visitors ultimately sustain and support – not damage – the destination’s environment and community," said Amy Alipio, senior editor at National Geographic Travel, in a statement announcing the destinations .

"We also worked hard to provide lesser-known gems on the list, equally inspiring alternatives to destinations that have become overcrowded," she said.

What US sites made National Geographic's Best of the World 2023 list?

San Francisco made the list as a top family destination. (National Geographic and National Geographic Traveler's editorial teams broke down their recommendations into five categories – family, adventure, culture, nature, and community – with five destinations in each category.)

Learn more: Best travel insurance

Utah was listed as a site notable for adventure; Charleston, South Carolina, was chosen for its cultural efforts. Big Bend National Park in Texas earned its spot for natural scenery; and Milwaukee was included as one of five places with extraordinary conservation, sustainability and ecotourism initiatives.

'Understand your limits, take care': These are America's 20 deadliest national parks

Switzerland, Colombia among recommended family trips

Switzerland, with a public transport network that includes a cookie train and a chocolate train, is among National Geographic's five best destinations to "educate and illuminate" travelers .

Colombia was chosen for its rich biodiversity, which lends itself to birdwatching and wildlife watching. The Manchester Museum helped the English city, home of the Manchester United Football Club, make the list. Turtles abound in Trinidad and Tobago – making the Caribbean nation a mecca for turtle tourism.

Among the highlights that landed  San Francisco  a spot: a new Crosstown Trail, created by volunteers, covering 17 miles of the city.

Disneyland vs. Disney World: What is the difference? How to choose which one to visit.

Primitive camping: What is it, why do it and what gear do you need to do it right?

For adventure, Austria, New Zealand and Peru are places to go

For those seeking "adrenaline-soaked adventures in 2023 and beyond," the magazine suggested the remote Inca ruins of Choquequirao in southern Peru.

Peruvian officials are spending $260 million to build a cable car making it easier to access the ruins. But tourists who want to see them now can make the journey over 18 miles of walking paths.

Other sites for "your next big adventure" on the list included the western states of Austria, which have created the Bergsteigerdörfer, a network of mountaineering villages where travelers get a more authentic Alpine experience.

Closer to home, Utah has five national parks and eight national monuments making it "an adventurer's dream destination," National Geographic said.

Mexico's Revillagigedo National Park – nicknamed "the Galapagos of Mexico," National Geographic says – is a haven for divers.

Skiing, hiking and bicycling make New Zealand's South Island a year-round adventure destination.

For culture, look to Egypt, Italy, and South Carolina

Italy is always a desired destination for tourists seeking to christen themselves in culture – some go for the food alone. One of the recent developments cited by National Geographic to make it a 2023 travel consideration: Italian officials are restoring the Appian Way, which runs 360 miles from Rome to southern Italy.

Egypt, too, remains an exotic place to travel; a timely consideration: the upcoming opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum, which houses King Tut's tomb.

"It's going to become a destination museum and will change the way people visit Egypt," said Fredrik Hiebert, the National Geographic Society's archaeologist-in-residence, in the article.

Other cultural hotspots designated by National Geographic : South Korea's second-largest city, Busan, which has an annual film festival and a burgeoning craft beer and artisan coffee scene; and the Henan Province of central China, where the Longmen Grottoes house scores of Buddhist sculptures – the largest is more than 56 feet high – dating back to the 5th century.

A cultural highlight helping earn Charleston, South Carolina  a spot on the list: the International African American Museum , opening in January. The museum is located near the city's harbor, which served as a slave trading port.

Connect with nature in Big Bend, Botswana and Scotland

Big Bend National Park in west Texas provides visitors with epic vistas, plus "more cactus species than any other national park," as well as birds and other wildlife, said the magazine in including the park among its "under-the-radar treasures."

"Big Bend National Park brings to life the frontier legend of Texas – but the landscape will also surprise you," the magazine said.

"We Texans knew it, but it seems the rest of the world is tuning in," noted the Austin American-Statesman on the park's designation.

There's also various cultures found in the 118-mile park, which sits just north of the Texas-Mexico border and south of towns such as Marfa and Alpine.

Other "wild escapes for nature lovers" National Geographic recommended included Botswana, where overtourism is being replaced with voluntourism. The southern African country is home to many game reserves and national parks. Slovenia, known for its eco-friendly tours, has a new Green Gourmet Route, an 11-day bicycling trail for foodies, the magazine said.

In the Scottish highlands, travelers can see how the country's northwest region is "rewilding" its landscapes with more trees and reintroduced wildlife. And the Azores – nine islands off the coast of Portugal – are "an oasis for 28 whale and dolphin species … (that) takes sustainable tourism seriously," Nat Geo said.

Milwaukee and Greece among smart tourist spots

Milwaukee was included in the list's community category , for less-visited destinations "that stand out for community-led conservation efforts; groundbreaking work in ecotourism, sustainability, and inclusive travel; and meaningful ways for travelers to give back."

The article calls Milwaukee "a Great Lakes city to watch," wrote the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel , noting that Nat Geo complimented how it "combines a blue-collar, back-thumping energy with a close-knit creative community."

Destinations highlighted include the Harley-Davidson Museum, the Riverwalk, the Deer District (and the 2021 World Champion Milwaukee Bucks), neighborhoods like Bronzeville and the Historic Third Ward, the Public Market, the Art Museum and, of course, breweries.

The magazine's other less-visited destinations included Greece's Dodecanese islands where locals aim to involve locals in traditional trades such as fishing and winemaking that also serve as sustainable tourist diversions.

A new travel highlight for Laos? A recently-launched bullet train that connects 260 miles of the Southeast Asian country for domestic and international tourists.

Tourists continue to heed the call of Ghanaian president Nana Akufo-Addo, who before the COVID-19 shutdown urged travelers to visit the West African country to connect with their African roots. And in Alberta, Canada, Indigenous tourism is a growing pursuit with parks such as Elk Island National Park offering guided hikes and Cree crafting workshops.

“From craft breweries and Asia’s top film festival in Busan, South Korea, to women-led Indigenous tourism in Alberta, Canada, and the densest leatherback turtle nesting ground in the world in Trinidad and Tobago, this year’s list reminds us that there is still so much out there to explore and experience.” said Nathan Lump, National Geographic’s editor-in-chief.

National Geographic adds 3 tours to its 2025 itinerary (and they look amazing)

N ational Geographic recently announced three additions to its 2025 Signature Land Expeditions. Using expert guides, these trips connect guests with the surroundings, allowing them to gain a deeper understanding of the landscape and culture.

Portugal and the Azores, Sri Lanka, and Australia comprise the new options, with each destination offering a fascinating journey into local history and customs. Every step of the way, a National Geographic Expert — like a conservationist, photographer, or archaeologist — offers detailed know-how, immersing guests in a new world . Here’s what each trip includes.

National Geographic Signature Land Expeditions 2025: Art, wildlife, islands

Though world travel introduces you to new places and people, it helps to have an expert on hand for a thorough appreciation of the environment. Also, someone who can guide you through a foreign land makes a trip easy instead of a navigational exercise. Nat Geo’s Signature Land Expeditions do just that, and for 2025, there are three new destinations .

The Portugal and the Azores trip lasts 10 days and explores the country’s art history, ecology, architecture, and cuisine. Experiences include viewing European works of art at Lisbon’s Sao Roque Church and visiting the Lello bookstore in Porto. After that, guests venture to the Azores, where they visit pristine natural sites, geothermal areas, and lush gardens.

Over 11 days, the Australia: Reefs, Rainforests & Wild Tasmania tour lets guests explore natural marvels and visit noted attractions. Highlights include snorkeling along the Great Barrier Reef and viewing fairy penguins at the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.  After that comes the iconic Sydney Opera House and the historic Port Arthur Australian Convict Site.

Sri Lanka: Wildlife and Wonders of the Spice Island is an 11-day expedition through the country’s history and ecology. On the way, travelers visit six UNESCO World Heritage sites and participate in several wildlife-observing activities. Also included are trips to the Central Highlands’ tea country, a safari drive through Yala National Park, and a train ride across Nine Arch Bridge.

Two prestigious lists place BW Music Theatre among the best of the best

  • Shawn Salamone

Top entertainment media have (once again) crowned BW one of the best places to study music theatre in the world.

BW Music Theatre production of "Ride the Cyclone"

When Baldwin Wallace University describes its music theatre program as "nationally renowned," that's not the University's self-designation; the acclaim comes from industry pros and media year after year.

Most recently, The Hollywood Reporter (THR) and Backstage are touting BW music theatre as elite.

But it's the BWMT graduates themselves, working all over the world, that provide the most powerful evidence that the high praise is well-deserved.

Hollywood Recognition

This is the second year in a row that BW has earned a place on The Hollywood Reporter's " 25 Best Drama Schools in the World " list.

Yes, the world.

THR " consulted with members of the industry and educators to determine its ranking of the best schools for an acting degree, with factors including overall training, cost, alumni success and more."

In making the case for the distinction, THR reporter Caitlin Huston wrote, " The conservatory musical theater program, led by Victoria Bussert, has seen most of its graduating seniors across the past 10 years sign with top representation after participating in the school's New York showcase. Alumni include Colton Ryan, who received a Tony nomination for leading  New York, New York  on Broadway last year, in addition to many others who are now on Broadway or on tour."

Backstage Praise

The THR accolade comes on the heels of Backstage magazine naming BW to its list of "The top college musical theater programs in the U.S." this spring.

Backstage had high praise for the varied skill-building, performance opportunities and post-college career prep offered in the BW program.

Performance opportunities abound with robust partnerships for off-campus professional stage experience at Great Lakes Theater/Idaho Shakespeare Festival , Playhouse Square ,  Beck Center for the Arts and The Cleveland Orchestra , just to name a few.

Backstage writer Hayden Field explains, "Each audition and rehearsal is run with Equity rules to prepare students for industry standards."

Triple Threat Training

Backstage also laid out the breadth of skill-building offered, writing, "Baldwin Wallace's conservatory program trains students in classical acting techniques like Stanislavsky, Meisner, and Alexander. It also focuses on diction and dialect, heightened verse, acting for the camera, and contemporary scene study.

"In the dance realm, students learn classical ballet, jazz, tap, modern, and hip-hop. As far as vocal techniques, they study classical, golden age musical theater, and pop and rock styles, as well as audition training."

Breaking into the business

As for professional launches, Backstage notes, "Baldwin Wallace also offers a master-class series that, starting sophomore year, allows students to be seen by 10 different professionals (agents, managers, or casting directors) who offer critiques and advice. Seniors perform in two days of showcases at New World Stages."

That New York City showcase is attended by 200 industry professionals, including agents, managers, casting directors, modeling agencies and TV/film studios, resulting in the majority of BW students landing representation year after year.

Following the May 2024 showcase, all BW Music Theatre graduating seniors were signed by an agent and/or a manager within a month.

In fact, the filmed version of " Waitress: The Musical " debuted in fall 2023, on demand and in theaters, with Caitlin Houlahan starring as Dawn and Nyla Watson in the ensemble.

Looking ahead, BW will stage the live, regional premiere of "Waitress: the Musical" as part of the BW/Beck Center collaboration in February 2025.
