Today, the historic building is used as a restaurant and viewpoint and offers visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the eventful past and enjoy the beauty of the Berchtesgaden Alps. Eagle’s Nest Tour in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria

The Eagle’s Nest Tour takes the route from Mirabell Square in Salzburg via the Alpenstraße to neighboring Bavaria and finally to the Obersalzberg. Upon arrival, you change to specifically equipped busses that take you up the 6.5km (4 miles) long and 4m (12ft) wide road with a gradient of 22%. The last stretch to the Eagle’s Nest consists of a 124m (406ft) long tunnel through solid rock and a sumptuously decorated elevator, which takes 41 seconds to go up the 124m (406ft) to the interior of the Eagle’s Nest.

Enjoy the striking views of the Alps from the Eagle’s Nest plateau at 1,834 m (406 ft) elevation. Discover alpine flora and fauna and enjoy the view at the summit cross, close by.

Before we get back on route to Salzburg, we stop at Berchtesgaden where you get the chance to explore this picturesque town.

An architectural masterpiece

The road leading to the Eagle’s Nest is a feat of architectural mastery. It was blasted into the solid rock of the mountain over a period of only 13 months. The elevation difference of 800m (2625ft) is covered with only a single switchback and 5 tunnels. The design of this road is unique around the world.

Eagle‘s Nest under National Socialism

Construction of the Eagle’s Nest with its metre-thick foundation walls was finished after only 13 months in 1938. It was one of the most elaborate construction projects during the Third Reich. The building is located on a spur just beneath the summit of Kehlstein Mountain at an elevation of 1,834m (6017ft).

Initially, the Eagle’s Nest was intended to fulfill representational purposes and was a gift to Adolf Hitler for his 50 th  birthday. Hitler however visited the Eagle’s Nest only a few times.

Except for the Eagle’s Nest, only few “authentic” buildings of the Third Reich are preserved to this day. The Eagle’s Nest was not hit during the airstrike on 25 th April 1945 and still exists in its original form today.

Its name was coined by a French diplomat who supposedly gave the building the nickname “Eagle’s Nest”.

Today, the building is used as a mountain inn. The restaurant boasts a unique panoramic view of the Berchtesgaden mountains and the area around Salzburg. Additionally, it is a reminder of the horrors and human abysses of the Nazi dictatorship under Adolf Hitler.

When does the Eagle’s nest open?

Depending on weather and snow conditions, the Eagle’s Nest is open between early May and the end of October.

During the winter months the Eagle’s Nest is closed.

Why was the Eagle’s Nest built?

The Eagle's Nest was built as a gift to Adolf Hitler for his 50th birthday, intended to serve as a prestigious retreat and a place to entertain dignitaries and state guests. Funded by the Nazi Party, its construction was part of a larger plan to consolidate power by creating monumental structures that reflected the regime's strength and Hitler's personal dominance. Despite its grand design and strategic location atop the Kehlstein mountain in the Bavarian Alps, Hitler seldom visited the site, reportedly due to his discomfort with heights. Today, it stands as a reminder of a dark period in history, attracting visitors from around the world as a museum and educational site.

Is there a guided tour inside the building?

Yes, there is a short guided tour through the building.

Is the entrance fee to the Eagle’s Nest included?

Yes, the entrance fee to the Eagle's Nest is included in the tour price.

Is there a long wait at entrance to the Eagle’s Nest?

No, the tour includes Skip the Line tickets, so there is no waiting time.

What was Hitler doing at the Eagle’s Nest?

Adolf Hitler made several visits to the Eagle's Nest throughout his tenure as the head of National Socialist Germany. This site was presented to Hitler by the NSDAP on the occasion of his 50th birthday and functioned as a distinguished venue for hosting state guests. Primarily, Hitler utilized the Eagle's Nest for relaxation and confidential discussions with his inner circle. It is documented that he commemorated his birthdays at this location and deliberated on significant political matters.

It is important to note that the Eagle’s Nest is not directly linked to the atrocities of World War II or the Holocaust. It was rather a place for Hitler to relax and discuss political matters away from the Berlin seat of government.

The Berghof became a second seat of power during the Third Reich but is no longer standing.

The Eagle’s Nest was built as a diplomatic teahouse for Adolf Hitler. The mountaintop structure and the road leading to it were considered to be a great engineering feat at the time.

Recommended by the major travel guidebooks!

World history in the bavarian alps.

The so-called “Eagle’s Nest” (Kehlsteinhaus) was built as a teahouse for Adolf Hitler on Kehlstein Mountain at an elevation of 6,017 ft / 1,834 m. Its unusual position made it a unique engineering feat. What few realize is that Hitler’s home (the Berghof) and southern headquarters – his second seat of power – were located on Obersalzberg, at the foot of the Eagle’s Nest mountain.

Due to its high elevation, the Eagle’s Nest generally can’t open until mid-May. For about three weeks prior to opening the high mountain road leading up to the building (the road is perched on the cliff face) a team not only clears away snow, but checks the mountainside for loose stones and any other possible dangers. The road and building cannot be opened until the “all clear” is given. The exact opening date is not usually known until about 2 weeks prior to the expected opening and is subject to weather conditions. The Eagle’s Nest officially closes at the end of October but early snowfall sometimes forces an earlier closure.

Our highly acclaimed Three-in-One private Eagle’s Nest Tour

Learn everything about the Eagle’s Nest with its neighboring sights, and, weather permitting, enjoy stunning panoramic views

A trip to the Eagle’s Nest, located on a mountain summit at over 6,000 ft in elevation, is always a memorable experience. Special mountain buses travel 4 miles up Germany’s highest road, transporting passengers to the original brass-lined elevator that carries them another 400 ft into the Eagle’s Nest. In clear weather the views of the Bavarian and Austrian Alps are spectacular.

Our 3,5 – 4 hour (with up to 6 persons) private educational tour emphasizes the historical significance of the whole mountain, not just the Eagle’s Nest teahouse. With our guide addressing only your party, be it a couple, a family or a group of friends, we show how Obersalzberg served as the cradle of the Nazi party and became a stage on which world history was enacted. In fact many of Hitler’s ideas and decisions that led to war and the holocaust can be traced back to this very idyllic mountainside.

Join us for a history intensive three-part historical tour that includes the construction and use of the Eagle’s Nest, a driving and educational tour of the Obersalzberg area (the former Nazi southern HQs) and a visit to the historically significant site of Hitler’s former home (now a ruin). Known as the “Berghof” the sprawling structure, once famed for its extensive terrace, is located on a promontory on the flank of the Obersalzberg mountain far below the more-famed “Eagle’s Nest.” Hitler’s 30-room estate became the venue for national and international political decision-making, a place visited by foreign heads of state and frequented by Nazi leaders, as well as by members of European high-society who were hosted by the “lady of the house”, Eva Braun. Find out more about Hitler’s home under →“Our Historical Tour.”

We highly recommend visiting the excellent “→Dokumentation Obersalzberg” and the underground bunkers. For more information visit →obersalzberg.de

Eagles nest

Did the tour to The Eagles Nest with Lisa as our guide. She was excellent- very informative and funny at the same time. The drivers are amazing- negotiating such tight places with ease.

Dear Chris, Thank you very much for choosing our tour company and for your review regarding our Eagles Nest Tour. We are glad you enjoyed the tour and hope we can welcome you again in the near future. Kind regards, Your Team from Salzburg Panorama Tours

The sound of music tour with Panorama was very nice . However , the guide in our bus Peter was not satisfactory . He was too cynical and he made sound of music like a satire. We and many like us have had such a romantic view of the movie though we totally know and understand the ways of Hollywood .

Thank you very much for joining our Original Sound of Music Tour® and for your kind review. We are delighted you enjoyed the tour with us and hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you again on one of our sightseeing tours in the future. Kind regards, Your Team from Salzburg Panorama Tours

The tours are punctual and the hosts are very knowledgeable. They facilitated all tickets and timetables for boats and busses. Hosts provided excellent information about what you were seeing on the tour and spoke in perfect English. Prices are very reasonable for the duration of the tours. I went on three tours and the professionalism and preparation by everyone associated with the company is very evident.

Thank you, Barry, for your kind review. We are glad you enjoyed the tour and hope we can welcome you again in the near future. Kind regards, Your Team from Salzburg Panorama Tours

Guides spoke excellent English, the vans were current models and the tours were spectacular. We went on the Slazburg salt mine tour and the Mountains and Lakes tour. I recommend them both, if you have the time. The salt mines are fun and interesting, whereas the lakes and mountains were spectacular - especially driving through the alps.

Dear Jonathan, Thank you very much for joining our sightseeing tours and for taking the time to review your experience. We are glad that you left with positive memories and we would be happy to welcome you back someday. Best regards, Your Team from Salzburg Panorama Tours

We booked this for our last day to take us out of the city. The tour guide was good, as was the tour. Shame we didn't stop at some of the more attractive vistas but otherwise it was well worth the doing. However in the summer months I think you could easily hire a car or take the local buses to do the same trip.

Thank you, Amber, for your review. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed the tour with our guide. If you would like to see more of the sights we have the option of booking private tours, which are arranged according to your personal interests and individual needs. You can find all information on our website. Once again thank you for your feedback and time you spent to bring your experience to our attention. We would be happy if we could get another chance to welcome you on board of any of our tours someday. Best regards from Salzburg, Salzburg Panorama Tours, Customer care

We chose Panorama tours to go to the 'Eagle's Nest' close to Salzburg. The reason we chose it was because it was recommended by another company who we were travelling europe through. We were thoroughly disappointed by what panorama provided. The bus ride took an hour out to another busstop to get up to the elevator for the eagle's nest. On this bus ride the guide mainly told us instructions for changing buses or people doing day tours rather than information about the places. we were passing. When he did try to tell us about the mountains or the towns it was very difficult to understand what he was saying, it was in very very jumbled English and repeated the same words over and over. It was very impersonal as well because it was such a large group. When we had to change buses he said the exact same instructions about how to get the next bus (which was visibly parked 20 metres away) at least 3 times. The bus up to the hill gave lovely views and was one of the nicest parts of the day. once we had reached the top we simply got out of the elevator and were shocked when the guide said we had an hour of 'free-time'. I was so shocked because I do not expect to pay 50 euros for a 'tour' and be given time to wander around the German signs by myself. the guides went and sat together and had a coffee and a cigarette at the best seats in the restaurant while we took copious amounts of photos of mountains. This is an amazing building with probably a chilling history as a birthday present for Hitler (learned from wikipedia not my 'tour' guide) and there were no stories or interesting facts shared by our guides. an hour later we were told 10 times or so to assemble and go down to the buses. We then drove down and had another hour free time in a little town (which was mentioned no-where in the information) before getting back on the bus and heading back to Salzburg. Overall, it was a nice day, but considering the cost of the tour we were VERY disappointed.
