Benefits of Taking a Month-Long Cruise

Hey there, my extended voyage enthusiast!

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty, let’s dream a bit, shall we? Month-long cruises are like the Netflix binges of the travel world, except, instead of watching episodes, you’re hopping from one exotic locale to another.

Here’s why a month-long cruise might just be the thing you never knew you needed:

Deep Dive into Destinations :A day or two at a port can give you a glimpse, but a month on various coasts? That’s a deep dive! Revel in the luxury of time, exploring beyond the tourist traps and truly immersing yourself in each destination’s culture, cuisine, and charm.

The Ultimate Detox from the Daily Grind :Are the daily 9-to-5, traffic jams, and endless emails wearing you down? A month-long cruise is your escape ticket. Feel the stresses of everyday life melt away as you’re lulled by the gentle ocean waves and mesmerized by the expansive sea views.

More Bang for Your Buck :While the upfront cost might make you gulp, consider the inclusions – accommodation, transportation, meals, entertainment, and the sheer experience. When broken down, these cruises can offer better value than many land-based vacations.

Community Building at Its Best :You’ll be surprised how a month aboard a ship can foster lifelong friendships. Sharing experiences, breaking bread, and dancing under the stars with fellow cruisers brings about a unique bond that short trips often miss out on.

Ever-Changing Backyard :Forget monotony! Every day presents a new view right outside your window. From bustling ports to serene islands and open ocean as far as the eye can see, it’s a continually changing tapestry that never gets old.

So, are you sold yet? 😉 Remember, it’s not just a holiday; it’s an experience, a story, a journey of 30 sunrises and sunsets at sea. Still on the fence? Let’s dive deeper into what these cruises have to offer.

Buckle up, dear traveler, because this is where we open Pandora’s Box of cruise options!

From luxury liners that exude opulence to niche ships that offer a more intimate experience, there’s a vessel for every kind of cruiser. Let’s cast our net wide and reel in some of the best month-long cruising itineraries out there.

Mainstream Giants : Sailing with the Big Fish

  • Royal Caribbean : Known for its behemoth ships and myriad of onboard activities, think of this as a floating city where every day offers a new adventure. Their extended cruises often cover multiple continents, ensuring a diverse travel palette.
  • Norwegian Cruise Line : Freestyle dining, electrifying entertainment, and itineraries that leave no stone unturned. Their month-long journeys, especially through regions like Asia and Europe, are things of legend.

  • Cunard : Sailing with Cunard is like stepping back in time. Ballroom dances, afternoon teas, and an air of vintage elegance make their month-long transatlantic cruises an affair to remember.

Specialty or Destination-Specific Lines: For the Niche Explorer

  • Windstar Cruises : With smaller ships, Windstar promises an intimate experience. Their extended itineraries often focus on off-the-beaten-path destinations, perfect for the curious souls.
  • Viking Ocean Cruises : Think enrichment lectures, destination performances, and immersive itineraries. A month with Viking is not just travel; it’s an education.

Planning and Preparation: Charting Your Course for a Smooth Sail

Alright, skipper! Now that you’ve caught the vision of which vessel might whisk you away, it’s time for the all-important phase – planning and prepping.

Month-long cruises, while thrilling, require a smidge more foresight than your average getaway. So, let’s walk the plank (not literally!) and dive into the essential prep work .

Early Bird Gets the Best Cabin

  • Advance Booking : Most cruise enthusiasts swear by this. Booking your cruise at least 8-12 months in advance not only guarantees a spot but often comes with perks – think discounted rates, onboard credits, or free excursions.

Paper Trail: Dotting the I’s and Crossing the T’s

  • Visas and Documentation : With multiple destinations, you might need several visas. Research each port’s requirements, and consider visa services that streamline the process.
  • Passport Validity : Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your return date. No one wants a travel hiccup over an expiry date oversight!

Health is Wealth, Especially at Sea

  • Vaccinations : Depending on your destinations, certain immunizations might be mandatory. Check with a travel clinic at least 2-3 months prior to departure.
  • Prescriptions and Medications : Stock up! Remember, while cruise ships have medical facilities, specific medications might not be available. Also, consider seasickness remedies, even if you think you have sea legs.

Financial Smooth Sailing

  • Travel Insurance : Don’t set sail without it. Look for comprehensive coverage that includes medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost baggage.
  • Budget Planning : While a lot is included in your cruise fare, there are additional expenses – shore excursions, specialty dining, souvenirs, and more. Set a daily budget to keep your finances ship-shape.

Stay Connected, or Blissfully Disconnected?

  • Mobile Plans : International roaming can burn a hole in your pocket. Consider sim cards for specific ports or international roaming packages.
  • Offline Apps : Download offline maps, translation apps, or travel guides. They’re lifesavers when connectivity is sketchy.

Home Sweet Home, While You’re Away

  • Property Maintenance : If leaving your home unattended, consider a house-sitter or ask a neighbor to keep an eye out. Don’t forget to halt mail and newspaper deliveries.
  • Pet Care : Got furry friends? Arrange for pet sitters or boarding facilities in advance.

Embarking on a month-long journey isn’t just about packing a suitcase and hopping aboard. It’s a labor of love, with meticulous planning ensuring smooth seas. But hey, the best stories come from adventures well-prepared, right?

Budgeting and Finances

A month on the water, with breathtaking views, opulent dinners, and endless entertainment, can feel like the pinnacle of luxury. But without proper financial planning, your dream vacation might turn into a nightmare of unexpected bills and charges.

So, let’s dive into the world of budgeting and ensure your month-long cruise is smooth sailing all the way, especially when it comes to your finances!

Pre-Cruise Budgeting

  • All-Inclusive vs. A La Carte : Understand what’s included in your cruise fare. Some cruises might be all-inclusive, while others have additional costs for dining, entertainment, and excursions.
  • Research and Pre-Book : Often, pre-booking excursions, spa treatments, or specialty dining can be cheaper than booking onboard.

Onboard Accounts & Currency

  • Setting Up : Most cruise lines operate on a cashless system onboard. You’ll typically set up an onboard account linked to your credit or debit card.
  • Currency Considerations : For port days, be aware of the local currency and exchange rates. Consider having a mix of cards and some local cash.

Tracking Your Expenditures

  • Regular Check-ins : Make a habit of checking your onboard account every few days. This can help spot any discrepancies and keep you on track with your budget.
  • Limit Impulse Buys : Yes, that spa treatment or piece of jewelry might be tempting, but always ask yourself if it’s within your budget and truly worth it.

Tipping Etiquette

  • Gratuities Included? : Some cruise lines include gratuities in the fare; others will add it to your onboard account. Familiarize yourself with your cruise line’s tipping policy.
  • Extra Tips : While not mandatory, if someone provides outstanding service, it’s a kind gesture to tip them extra. Budget for these little acts of appreciation.

Port Days and Excursions

  • Self-Guided vs. Organized Tours : While organized tours offer convenience, sometimes exploring on your own can be a more affordable option.
  • Eat Like a Local : Instead of dining at touristy spots, find where the locals eat. It’s often more authentic and less pricey.

Preparing for Emergencies

  • Travel Insurance : Never embark on a long journey without it. Ensure it covers cruise-specific scenarios and any activities you plan to partake in.
  • Emergency Fund : Always have a small fund stashed away for unexpected situations.

Post-Cruise Financials

  • Final Bill : Before disembarking, review your final bill for any discrepancies. Addressing them onboard is easier than after you’ve left the ship.
  • Budget for Post-Cruise : If you’re spending a few days in the disembarkation city, remember to budget for that too.

Embarking on a month-long cruise should be about relaxation, exploration, and making memories. With a well-thought-out budget and a keen eye on your finances, you can ensure that money matters won’t cast a shadow on your sun-soaked voyage.

cruise packing tips

Packing for a Month at Sea

Okay, sea-farer, let’s get down to what might be the most overwhelming (yet exciting!) part – packing for an entire month !

The open ocean calls, but so does the challenge of fitting your life into a suitcase for 30 days. But fear not! With a sprinkle of strategy and a dash of organizing magic, we’ve got you covered.

Capsule Wardrobe Magic

  • Mix and Match : Focus on versatile clothing items that can be dressed up or down. Think neutral colors, classic cuts, and layer-friendly pieces. A handful of tops, bottoms, and layers can yield countless combinations.
  • Dress Codes : Many cruises have formal nights, so pack accordingly. A formal outfit for women and a suit or tux for men should suffice.

Weather Wise

  • Research and Prepare : Month-long cruises often cross varied climates. Pack layers, breathable clothes for tropical regions, and warm gear for cooler zones.
  • Rainy Day Gear : A compact umbrella or a foldable raincoat can be a lifesaver during unexpected showers.

Shoe-In Strategies

  • Walk the Walk : Comfortable walking shoes are a must for excursions and deck strolls.
  • Dress to Impress : A pair of formal shoes for those special nights, and don’t forget flip-flops for pool lounging!

Tech and Entertainment

  • Gadget Gathering : Camera, e-reader, tablet, headphones, and of course, chargers for each! Consider a multi-port charger or an extension cord due to limited outlets in some cabins.
  • Offline Downloads : Music playlists, e-books, movies, or series for those lazy sea days.

Essentials and Emergency Kit

  • Travel Docs : Keep passports, tickets, insurance papers, and other cruise essentials in an easily accessible pouch.
  • Mini Pharmacy : Aside from prescriptions, pack a basic medical kit – painkillers, antacids, band-aids, antiseptic wipes, and any other personal necessities.

Day-Trip Delights

  • Backpack or Tote : For shore excursions, a lightweight bag to carry essentials, snacks, and shopping finds is indispensable.
  • Reusable Water Bottle : Stay hydrated during excursions and reduce plastic waste.

Personal Touches

  • Room Decor : A month is a long time! Consider bringing a few items to make your cabin feel cozier – maybe fairy lights or some favorite photos.
  • Snacks and Munchies : While there’s no shortage of food, having some of your favorite snacks can be comforting.

When it comes to packing for a month-long cruise, the mantra is clear: It’s not about how much you pack, but how smart you pack.

Remember, the journey is as much about the memories you’ll create as the items you bring along. So, keep it light, keep it savvy, and keep the spirit of adventure alive in every suitcase zipper you close!

Making the Most of Your Month Long Cruise

One entire month afloat! That’s 30 sunrises over the horizon, dozens of dishes to sample, and countless memories waiting to be made.

But how do you ensure each day feels as fresh as the ocean breeze? Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sailor, here are some tips to keep the magic alive throughout your month-long voyage.

Dive into Daily Activities

  • Check the Daily Schedule : Every morning, cruise lines offer a ‘daily planner’ filled with activities. From art auctions to dance classes, trivia games to wine tastings, there’s something for every mood.
  • Join a Club or Group : Many cruises offer special interest clubs or meet-ups – be it for book lovers, card players, or singles. It’s a great way to mingle!

Stay Fit and Fabulous

  • Gym and Exercise Classes : Most ships boast state-of-the-art gyms. Classes like pilates, yoga, or Zumba can keep you in shape and energized.
  • Deck Walks : A morning or evening stroll on the deck isn’t just romantic; it’s a great way to stay active.

Culinary Adventures

  • Dine Differently : With numerous dining options, challenge yourself to try a new dish or eatery every day. From buffet breakfasts to fine dining evenings, savor the world on a plate!
  • Take a Cooking Class : Some cruises offer culinary workshops. Learn to whip up a dish from a port you visited.

Spa Days and Relaxation

  • Book a Spa Treatment : Consider pampering yourself with a massage, facial, or a dip in the thermal suite.
  • Quiet Corners : Every ship has them – those serene nooks where you can read, reflect, or simply watch the waves.

Education and Enrichment

  • Attend Lectures and Workshops : Many cruises have experts on board, giving talks on topics ranging from the history of a destination to stargazing.
  • Craft Workshops : Knitting, scrapbooking, or jewelry-making – pick up a new hobby while at sea.

Night Owls Have a Ball!

  • Evening Shows and Performances : Cruise lines pull out all the stops when it comes to entertainment. Musicals, magic shows, stand-up comedy – every fun cruise night is showtime!
  • Dance the Night Away : Discotheques, themed parties, or ballroom nights – put on your dancing shoes.

Document Your Journey

  • Journaling or Blogging : Chronicle your experiences, thoughts, and feelings. Not only is it therapeutic, but it’s also a wonderful keepsake.
  • Photography : With ever-changing views, there’s always a picture-perfect moment. Capture it!

When on a month-long cruise, the days can blur into a mix of azure skies and endless oceans. However, with a pinch of curiosity and a dollop of enthusiasm, every sunrise can herald a brand-new adventure. So, dear cruiser, set forth, explore, and let the ship’s rhythm become your very own heartbeat!

NCL tips

Navigating Onboard Life

A month at sea might sound dreamy – and don’t get us wrong, it often is – but it also comes with its own unique rhythm and quirks.

Living onboard a floating city has its nuances, and whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned sea-traveler, here are some pointers to ensure that your month-long stint on the waves is nothing short of spectacular.

Understanding Ship’s Layout

  • Map It Out : Cruise ships are vast. Familiarize yourself with the ship’s layout early on. Knowing the shortcuts to your favorite spots can save you a lot of wandering around.
  • Key Locations : Identify where essential services like the medical center, guest services desk, and main dining areas are located.

Activities & Entertainment

  • Daily Newsletters : Most cruise lines will deliver a daily schedule to your cabin. This is your guide to the day’s events, activities, and shows.
  • Try New Things : From dance classes to pottery workshops, take advantage of the diverse activities onboard.

Socializing & Making Friends

  • Join Groups : Cruises often host meet-ups for solo travelers, specific age groups, or interest-based clubs. This can be a great way to meet fellow passengers.
  • Dine Communal : Opt for shared tables during meals. It’s an easy way to strike up a conversation and make new friends.

Maintaining Personal Time & Space

  • Quiet Corners : Find your sanctuary. Maybe it’s a secluded deck spot, a quiet library chair, or a cozy café onboard.
  • Set Boundaries : Traveling with family or friends? It’s okay to take time for yourself. Schedule personal breaks or solo activities.

Health & Wellness

  • Stay Active : With gyms, pools, and fitness classes available, there’s no excuse not to maintain your fitness routine. Or better yet, develop a new one!
  • Mind Your Diet : With the abundance of delicious food, it’s easy to overindulge. Remember to balance out the treats with healthier choices.

Cultivate a Routine

  • Ship Time vs. Shore Time : Understand the difference and plan your days accordingly, especially when there are time changes.
  • Establish a Rhythm : Just like on land, having a daily routine can make life onboard more structured and enjoyable.

Living onboard a cruise ship is a blend of adventure and comfort, of excitement and relaxation. It’s a dynamic environment, ever-changing with the waves and the ports.

But with a bit of planning and an open heart, you can find your sea legs and dance to the rhythm of cruise life. After all, for this month, the ship is not just a mode of transport; it’s home.

Exploring Ports of Call

Anchors away! One of the most exhilarating parts of a month-long cruise is the sheer number of ports you’ll dock at. From bustling cities to tranquil islands, every stopover is a chance to immerse yourself in a new world.

But how do you ensure that you make the most out of each destination, especially with limited hours at your disposal? Here are some insights to steer you right!

Research Before You Dock

  • Destination Deep Dive : A day or two before arriving, do a little homework. Familiarize yourself with the port’s highlights, history, and cultural nuances.
  • Language Basics : Picking up a few local phrases or greetings can enhance your interaction with the locals and make you feel more connected.

Opt for Shore Excursions or DIY?

  • Guided Tours : Cruises often offer excursions tailored to showcase the best of each port. These are hassle-free, curated, and typically come with knowledgeable guides.
  • Venture on Your Own : If you’re the adventurous kind, rent a bike, hire a cab, or just walk. Exploring at your own pace can lead to unexpected and delightful discoveries.

Embrace Local Cuisine

  • Street Food and Local Delights : Don’t miss out on trying the local delicacies. Whether it’s a bustling food market or a quaint café, treat your taste buds.
  • Ask the Locals : Often, they’ll direct you to hidden gems that aren’t touristy and offer authentic dishes.

Cultural Etiquette

  • Dress Appropriately : In certain destinations, especially religious sites, dressing conservatively is essential. Always carry a scarf or a shawl.
  • Be Respectful : Understand the do’s and don’ts. For instance, in some cultures, it’s impolite to click pictures without seeking permission.
  • Local Souvenirs : Skip the generic gift shops. Look for handmade crafts, local artwork, or traditional products that make for unique keepsakes.
  • Bargain, but Fairly : In many places, haggling is the norm. However, do it respectfully and remember that for many artisans, this is their primary livelihood.
  • Be Aware of Your Surroundings : Stick to well-trodden paths, especially if you’re venturing out on your own.
  • Keep Copies : Always carry copies of essential documents like your passport and cruise ID. Leave the originals in your ship’s safe.

Connect Beyond the Surface

  • Engage with the Locals : A chat with a street vendor, a shared moment with a local artist, or even playing with kids at a park – these are the memories that linger.
  • Seek Out Unconventional Sites : While major attractions are a must-see, sometimes, off-the-beaten-path spots like a quiet library, a neighborhood garden, or an old bookstore can offer deeper insights into the local way of life.

Docking at a new port is like opening a fresh chapter of a book filled with stories, flavors, sounds, and sights. While you might only get a glimpse of each destination, with the right approach, every port of call can leave an indelible mark on your traveler’s soul. So, step off that gangway and embrace the world waiting to be explored!

Connectivity & Keeping in Touch

Ah, the age of connectivity! While the idea of cruising might evoke images of cutting off from the world and floating in a tranquil bubble, let’s face it – we live in a digital era. Whether you need to check in on work, want to share your journey with friends on social media, or simply binge-watch your favorite show, staying connected can be crucial. Here’s a guide to ensure you remain plugged in, even while you’re in the middle of the ocean.

Understand the Cruise Line’s Internet Packages

  • Tiered Plans : Most cruises offer different connectivity plans. From basic (just emails) to premium (streaming and faster speeds), know your options.
  • Day Pass vs. Whole Cruise : Depending on your usage, decide if you want to buy a package for the entire cruise or just for specific days.

Make the Most of Port Days

  • Local SIM Cards : If you have an unlocked phone, purchasing a local SIM card at various ports can offer cheaper rates and faster connectivity.
  • Cafés & Hotspots : Many cities and towns have cafes or public places with free Wi-Fi. It’s a great opportunity to download, stream, or backup your photos and videos.

Offline Entertainment

  • Download Ahead : Before embarking, download movies, books, podcasts, or music. This ensures entertainment even during connectivity lulls.
  • Apps That Work Offline : Apps like Maps.me allow you to navigate places without using data. Useful for those DIY port explorations!

Staying in Touch with Loved Ones

  • Scheduled Check-ins : Set specific times when you’ll call or message. This ensures that family and friends aren’t constantly worried.
  • Postcards & Snail Mail : Go old-school! Send postcards from various ports. They’re tangible memories and a joy to receive.

Be Cautious of Roaming Charges

  • Flight Mode : Ensure you turn on flight mode when not using the internet to avoid unintended data usage.
  • Check with Your Service Provider : Some mobile plans offer international roaming. Know the charges to avoid nasty bill surprises.

Making Work Work

  • Set Expectations : If you need to check in on work, ensure colleagues know your availability windows.
  • Back-Up Solutions : Carry portable hard drives or invest in cloud storage to back up important documents.

Embrace Digital Detox Days

  • Scheduled Breaks : Yes, staying connected is great, but occasional digital detox days can rejuvenate you. Dive into ship activities, read a physical book, or simply gaze at the endless water.

The vast ocean might seem like a barrier to the digital realm, but with a little preparation and savvy, you can sail smoothly through the waves of the internet. After all, isn’t it wonderful to video call from the deck and show the sunset to your loved ones? Or share that beautiful snap of a dolphin leaping? Dive into the digital, but remember to occasionally look up and soak in the analog world around you!

sea sickness on month long cruise adventure

Potential Challenges and How to Overcome Them

Let’s face it: a month-long cruise is an exciting and rewarding experience, but even on the calmest of seas, challenges may arise. As the saying goes, “A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor.” So, let’s address some of the common hiccups you might encounter and offer some expert advice on how to navigate them.

Sea Sickness

  • Symptoms : Dizziness, nausea, and vomiting can hit even the most seasoned cruisers. The constant movement of the ship can be unsettling for some.
  • Overcoming It : Wear sea bands, take over-the-counter medications, or consult the ship’s doctor. Additionally, staying in the middle of the ship or keeping your eyes on the horizon can help.

Cabin Fever

  • Symptoms : Feeling confined or restless after spending too much time in your cabin or onboard the ship.
  • Overcoming It : Change your environment. Participate in onboard activities, explore different ship areas, or simply take a walk on the deck and breathe in the fresh sea air.

Dietary and Food Concerns

  • Symptoms : Overindulging, not finding foods you like, or dietary restrictions can cause challenges.
  • Overcoming It : Speak with the onboard dining team about your dietary needs. Opt for a balanced diet, and remember, while it’s okay to treat yourself, moderation is key.

Overpacked Itinerary

  • Symptoms : Feeling exhausted trying to catch every show, participate in every activity, and join every shore excursion.
  • Overcoming It : Prioritize what’s most important to you. It’s okay to miss out on some things. Remember, relaxation is also a significant part of the cruise experience.

Communication and Connectivity

  • Symptoms : Frustration over sporadic or expensive internet connections and the challenge of staying in touch with loved ones back home.
  • Overcoming It : Embrace digital detox. Inform family and friends about your limited connectivity. For essential communications, consider purchasing a Wi-Fi package onboard.

Interpersonal Conflicts

  • Symptoms : Traveling with family or friends for a prolonged period might lead to disagreements or tensions.
  • Overcoming It : Open communication is key. Allocate personal time and space, and respect each other’s boundaries. Remember, everyone needs a bit of ‘me-time’, even on a cruise.

Missing Home and Familiarity

  • Symptoms : Feeling homesick or missing the routines and comforts of home.
  • Overcoming It : Bring small comforts from home, like photos or favorite snacks. Engage in familiar activities, like reading or listening to favorite songs. Also, make an effort to make new friends onboard; shared experiences can form lasting bonds.

No voyage is without its moments of turbulence, but it’s how you respond to these challenges that will define your experience. With a little preparation, flexibility, and a dash of humor, you’ll be equipped to handle any curveballs thrown your way and ensure that your month-long cruise is an unforgettable adventure.

post-cruise adjustment sailing

Post-Cruise Transition

After spending a solid month aboard a floating paradise, the reality of disembarking and heading back to your daily life can be a tad overwhelming. Just like adjusting to life on the ship took a moment, so will getting used to life on solid ground. The end of an epic month-long cruise adventure doesn’t have to spell immediate blues. Here’s a guide to easing back into ‘normal’ life while keeping the cruise magic alive.

Physical Readjustment

  • Sea Legs Syndrome : You might feel like you’re still swaying even when you’re on steady ground. Give it a few days, and your equilibrium will reset.
  • Dietary Transition : After indulging in the cruise’s extensive menu, it’s a good idea to ease back into a regular eating routine. Maybe even recreate some of your favorite dishes from the cruise at home!

Emotional Transition

  • Post-Cruise Blues : It’s natural to feel a bit down once the vacation is over. Keep the memories alive by sorting through photos, connecting with friends made on the ship, and planning your next adventure.
  • Gratitude Journaling : Reflect on the moments of joy, the ports visited, and the experiences you treasured most. This practice can help in grounding and appreciating the journey.

Practical Steps

  • Unpacking : Rather than dreading it, turn unpacking into a trip down memory lane. Relive each moment as you put away souvenirs and launder clothes.
  • Budget Reassessment : After a significant expense like a month-long cruise, revisit your finances, and adjust your budget accordingly.

Sharing and Storytelling

  • Engage in Conversations : Sharing stories with family and friends allows you to relive the experience. Plus, they’ll love to hear about your adventures!
  • Document the Journey : Consider starting a blog or an Instagram page dedicated to your travels. Your unique insights might inspire someone else’s journey.

Planning Your Next Adventure

  • Research and Exploration : Even if it’s just daydreaming, start thinking about your next destination. It gives you something to look forward to!
  • Feedback to Cruise Line : Sharing your feedback helps cruise lines improve, and they often reward detailed feedback with discounts or perks for your next voyage.

Reintegrating into Routine

  • Gradual Transition : Don’t rush into a hectic routine. Give yourself a couple of days to acclimate.
  • Healthy Habits : Incorporate routines you might have picked up on the cruise, like daily walks on deck, into your everyday life. Maybe start with a morning walk or meditation.

Returning from a month-long cruise is akin to ending a chapter in a riveting book. While the experience is over, the stories, lessons, and memories remain. Embrace the transition, and remember: every ending is just a new beginning in disguise.

FAQs about Month Long Cruises

What can I expect on a month-long cruise?

A month-long cruise offers a comprehensive exploration of regions, allowing for deep dives into destinations, immersive onboard experiences, personal growth opportunities, and a chance to form deeper connections with fellow passengers and crew.

Is a month-long cruise worth the cost?

Absolutely! The value isn’t just in the numerous destinations you’ll visit, but also in the onboard experiences, amenities, and unique opportunities that are harder to achieve on shorter trips. When you break down the cost per day, it can be more economical than staying in hotels and paying for individual meals and entertainment.

How do I pack for such a long voyage?

Packing for a month-long cruise requires careful planning. Consider versatile clothing that can be layered, mixed, and matched. Most ships offer laundry services, so no need to pack an outfit for every day. Don’t forget essentials, appropriate attire for different climates, and formal wear if required.

Will I get bored spending an entire month on a ship?

It’s unlikely! Cruise ships are like floating cities with a wide range of entertainment options, from theaters and casinos to spa services, pools, and daily activities. Plus, with frequent port stops, there’s always something new to explore.

How is the internet connectivity on month-long cruises?

While most modern cruise ships offer Wi-Fi, it might not be as fast as what you’re used to on land and can be more expensive. It’s a good opportunity to take a digital detox, but if staying connected is crucial, check with the cruise line about their internet packages.

Is it safe to go on a month-long cruise?

Cruise lines prioritize the safety of their passengers. Ships are equipped with modern safety features, and crew members are trained for emergencies. However, always pay attention during safety drills and follow onboard guidelines.

What happens if I fall sick during the cruise?

Cruise ships are equipped with medical facilities and have doctors and nurses onboard to handle medical situations. If you have specific health concerns or need certain medications, discuss this with the cruise line in advance.

Are month-long cruises suitable for kids?

Many month-long cruises cater to families and offer kid-friendly activities and child care services. However, consider the length of the voyage and whether your kids would enjoy such a long trip.

How is the dining experience on extended cruises?

Dining on a month-long cruise is a treat! With multiple dining venues and rotating menus, you’ll get to savor a variety of world-class cuisines. Most ships also offer specialty restaurants for unique culinary experiences.

Can I work from the ship during the cruise?

While it’s possible, given the available Wi-Fi, there might be connectivity issues. If you’re considering working during the cruise, check with the cruise line about their internet capabilities and any work-friendly spaces onboard.

How do I handle time zone changes during the cruise?

Ships usually adjust their onboard clocks to match the local time of the port they’re visiting. To avoid jet lag or disorientation, try to adjust your sleep schedule gradually, stay hydrated, and spend time in natural sunlight.

Can I join the cruise partway or leave before it ends?

While it’s technically possible, it can be complicated due to visa regulations, port fees, and individual cruise line policies. Always check with your cruise line and understand any implications or additional costs.

What about fitness and wellness on a month-long cruise?

Most modern cruise ships are equipped with state-of-the-art fitness centers, jogging tracks, and even sports courts. Many also offer wellness programs, yoga sessions, and spa treatments to ensure you remain active and relaxed throughout the journey.

Can I customize my excursions or do I have to stick with the cruise line’s offerings?

While cruise lines offer a range of excursions tailored to the destinations you’ll visit, you’re not obligated to book through them. Many passengers opt to explore ports on their own or book excursions through third-party providers. Just ensure you return to the ship on time!

How do I manage my finances on a month-long cruise?

Cruise ships operate on a cashless system. All onboard expenses are usually charged to your room’s account, which can be settled at the end of the cruise. It’s a good idea to set a daily budget, monitor your spending, and check with guest services for regular account summaries.

Are there any dress codes I should be aware of?

While daytime attire is generally casual, evenings might have a dressier code, especially in dining rooms and for special events. Most cruises will have formal nights where guests are encouraged to dress up. Always check your cruise line’s specific guidelines before packing.

What if I have dietary restrictions or special needs?

Cruise lines are accommodating when it comes to dietary restrictions. Whether you’re vegan, gluten-free, or have specific allergies, inform the cruise line in advance. Additionally, ships are equipped to assist passengers with disabilities, but it’s essential to discuss any needs ahead of time.

How can I stay in touch with my family while on the cruise?

Besides onboard Wi-Fi, many cruise ships offer satellite phone services. Some cruise packages might include limited internet or minutes for calls. Alternatively, you can also purchase SIM cards or phone plans that work in the countries you’ll be visiting.

Do month-long cruises offer educational or enrichment activities?

Yes! Many extended cruises offer enrichment lectures, language classes, culinary demonstrations, and even workshops related to the destinations you’ll visit. These can be a fantastic way to enhance your travel experience.

How do gratuities work on a month-long cruise?

Gratuities are often added daily to your onboard account, covering services like housekeeping and dining. The amount is usually set by the cruise line but can be adjusted if you prefer. Some passengers choose to give additional tips for exemplary service.

What should I do to prepare for the different climates and weather I might encounter?

When cruising for an extended period, you might experience varying weather conditions. Pack versatile clothing, including layers, waterproof items, and both warm and cold-weather gear. Checking the expected weather for your destinations a few weeks before departure can also help guide your packing.

Are there loyalty or discount programs for frequent cruisers?

Absolutely! Most cruise lines offer loyalty programs that provide benefits, discounts, and perks for repeat guests. If you’re considering more cruises in the future, it’s worth exploring these programs.

10 Around-the-world Cruises for the Trip of a Lifetime

These world cruises offer the ultimate itineraries.

5 month long cruise

Want to island hop around French Polynesia, visit Africa's incredible cities, and cruise through Asia without ever switching hotels or repacking your bags? An around-the-world cruise provides the ultimate itinerary, packed with exciting international destinations (some even visit hard-to-reach destinations like Easter Island and Antarctica), and luxury cruise lines provide comfortable accommodations, specialty restaurants, and plenty to do on and off the ship.

There are two main things you need before booking a world cruise: plenty of time and some spare cash. Prices range from around $20,000 to upwards of $100,000 per person, and all our top picks are more than 100 days (one is even a whopping 275 days), so they're ideal for retired travelers looking for their next big adventure. Pack wisely for a range of destinations and climates, and get ready for the journey of a lifetime, filled with postcard-perfect destinations and new friends (because you're bound to meet a travel buddy or two after 100-plus days on a ship). If an around-the-world cruise is at the top of your travel list, you'll want to book sooner rather than later — these journeys frequently sell out because many cruise lines only offer a limited number of sailings.

Here are ten of the best around-the-world cruises you can take in 2023 and 2024.

Can You Cruise on a Passport that Expires in Less than 6 Months?

I was sitting around today, listening to a story about how a colleague's child couldn't go on their school trip with EF Tours because their passport expired 5 months after the trip date. They got it resolved before the trip because they got the notice in October and had enough time to get a new one, but it got me thinking today. I have a land trip to SXM in early July, and then I have my MSC Divina Cruise in August, which stops in Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, Mexico and the Bahamas. My passport expires on December 13 of this year. I planned on filing for a new one right after my MSC cruise, because after that cruise, I am done internationally traveling for a while, but that story has me worried. My passport expires 5 months after my trip to SXM, and 3.5 months after my cruise. Will I be denied entry into any of these countries with my passport? I could do the one day service in DC or Philly, or pay for the expedited passport service and get a new one now with a little over a month left until SXM, but if there is no problem with traveling with it, I don't see the sense in paying extra when I could wait the normal time after the MSC cruise is over. Thank you so much to anyone who can provide any help!

In general, except for Cuba, no ports in the Caribbean require passports to be valid 6 months beyond the date of your visit.

Also, you may want to post in the MSC forum: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=80

It wasn't an MSC specific question, and I figured that I could info a little faster here, since all of the places I am considering are frequent destinations for RCI. Besides, since it is not ship or line specific, the Mods will probably move it anyway. But thank you for your help! :D

"Royal Caribbean International strongly recommends that all guests travel with a passport that is valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of the cruise."

I always thought they would not accept a passport with less than six months to expiration. Guess I was wrong.

You would have to look up the policy for each port you visit to see what their requirements are. You may want to consider bringing along your drivers license and birth certificate as a backup form of citizenship, in case the passport is not accepted.

For the cruise, as long as you are an American Citizen, then you don't even need a passport, so no worries there, for the land trip, Sint Maarten, only requires an American Passport be valid for the duration of the stay on the island, so once again you should be fine

You can cruise, but not flying to St Maarten

According to the US State Dept website, for the OP's July land based visit to St Maarten, a US passport must only be valid to cover the duration of the OPs stay in St Maarten for which they will need to show a return flight ticket back to the US.

https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/country/sint-maarten.html

Can you post where are you getting your alternative facts from?

Thank you so much for your help. UKSimonUSA, I was also thinking that about the cruise, I could always show up with my birth certificate instead of a passport. But I do have a return ticket for my land trip to St Maarten, and obviously my passport runs through the duration of my stay, so I should be good. Thank you so much! :D

The ending statement made me chuckle :D But thank you for this, it is a good resource to use. I also know of a friend who is in a similar situation with different countries, so I will forward them the link so they can check up on where they are going and see if they need to pay for a new passport now or later. Thank you!

Yeah, I always thought it was a legitimate rule too until I did more research into the actual policies. Certain countries will not let you in if it expires in 3 months, but I always thought the 6 month rule was a real thing. I will check each of my port country's rules, but thanks for the tip about the driver's license and birth certificate, that should add for extra safety, but most importantly, peace of mind when traveling. Thank you!

You're welcome, my daughter is at med school on St Maarten, so I tend to keep up with things like that

Cool Cruiser

Hi OceanofTravels,

Would like to know if you had any issue to board the ship or the entry these country during your Msc cruise because I have the same issue with you for my Msc Seaside cruise on August 25, 2018.

For an American citizen, the expiration date on your passport doesn’t matter (as long as it is valid at the time) for a Caribbean cruise (with the exception of Cuba).

When on a cruise, you “technically” never enter the country you are visiting, your status is considered to be “in transit”

This is the best resource:

Just type in the country and search for their requirements.

I was wondering the same thing about passports. We are cruising in Feb and both my boys passports expire in May, i am guessing I will need to get them. They are going from child to adult and we are Canadian.

No place where Royal cruises in the Caribbean requires a 6 month expiration time on your passport.

Now, if you want to fly to one of those Caribbean islands, or you want to depart the cruise permanently in one of those islands, then the rules are different.

I just followed this link, mostly out of curiosity because we have already applied for new passports for our late October cruise (with passports expiring in early April). This is the paragraph of most interest to me.

"Always bring your passport in case of an emergency, such as an unexpected medical air evacuation or the ship docking at an alternate port in an emergency, even if your cruise says you won’t need it."

None of us ever expects to need to fly home, but our travel agent has always advised us to cruise with a passport instead of other ID in case of emergency.

Happy Cruising!

Margy, I can't emphasize that rule enough to my friends. As you said, we never anticipate an emergency but be prepared. It happened to us coming off our TA last Sept with my husband. He made the cruise and tours magnificently but 4 days from arriving in Boston he suffered a heart attack and we were diverted to ST Johns Newfoundland. I bring my PP, DL, & Birth Cert when I cruise regardless of the Itinerary.

Just came off a cruise to St. Maarten, St. Kitts...…..passport set to expire 6 days after cruise ending.....did not have an issue....

In my view, with the cost of those things, I am going to get my monies worth...especially for children which are only good for 5 years once renewed.

Thanks for the link, I was able to verify the info for my sister whose passport will expire 6 months and 3 weeks after our cruise. I wasn't worried about it, but I want to make sure her first cruise will be perfect, so I am paying attention to tiny details (even more than usual).

I've said the same thing lol. And when the kids turn 16 and get that first 10 year passport I also tell them that's the last one I'm paying for! :)

SRF

6 months is correct for some countries.

Typically it has to be valid for 6 months upon arrival, but some countries it is expected departure.

Bottom line is, check EACH country.

And realize that cruise rules may be different from flying or driving into a country.

My SO is not a US citizen. If she were to fly into St Maartin, she would have to have a visa. But arriving on a cruises ship, no visa is required.

How much is a 5 month cruise?

**How Much Is a 5-Month Cruise?**

Taking a 5-month cruise can be a dream for many people, but how much does it actually cost? Well, the price of a 5-month cruise can vary depending on the cruise line, the type of cabin, the destinations, and the amenities included. On average, a 5-month cruise can cost anywhere from $15,000 to $100,000 per person. This range is quite broad, but it really depends on the cruise line, the specific itinerary, and the level of luxury you are looking for.

If you are considering a luxury cruise line, you can expect to pay towards the higher end of the scale, with prices ranging from $50,000 to $100,000 per person for a 5-month cruise. On the other hand, if you are more interested in a budget-friendly cruise, you can find options for as low as $15,000 to $30,000 per person. Whatever the cost may be, keep in mind that this price usually includes accommodation, meals, some drinks, entertainment, and access to the ship’s amenities. However, it may not cover additional expenses such as excursions, specialty dining, and gratuities.

**Frequently Asked Questions About 5-Month Cruises**

**What are the most common destinations for a 5-month cruise?**

A 5-month cruise can take you to a wide range of destinations, including but not limited to, the Caribbean, Mediterranean, South Pacific, Southeast Asia, and the South Pacific. Some cruises may even offer around-the-world itineraries, allowing you to visit numerous countries and continents in one trip.

**Is there an age limit for a 5-month cruise?**

Most cruise lines don’t have a strict age limit for long-duration cruises, but they may require passengers to meet certain health and fitness requirements. It’s important to consider the physical demands of a 5-month cruise, as it may not be suitable for everyone, especially those with limited mobility or health issues.

**Are there any special activities or events on a 5-month cruise?**

Many cruise lines offer a variety of onboard activities and entertainment for passengers on long-duration cruises. These may include special lectures, cooking classes, dance lessons, art workshops, and cultural performances. Some cruises may also organize themed events, such as wine tastings, music festivals, or costume parties.

**What kind of accommodations are available on a 5-month cruise?**

Passengers on a 5-month cruise can choose from a range of accommodations, including interior cabins, ocean-view cabins, balcony cabins, and suites. Each type of cabin offers different levels of comfort, space, and amenities, so it’s important to consider your preferences and budget when choosing the right accommodation for your cruise.

How Much a Cruise Costs in 2024

Wondering how much you’ll spend to take a cruise? We have specific estimates (using actual figures from the cruise lines!) below.

Two ships in port of Cozumel

Before we get too far, however, you should know that just like buying a car, you can spend as much — or as little — as you want for your vacation .

For instance, are you happy with the lowest-cost interior cabin… or would you rather spend more for a balcony or a suite?

Or are you the sort of person who can only sail during the summer months (when prices are much higher), or can you sail during the off-season and save hundreds of dollars ?

From room types to when you sail to the cruise line you pick, they all have an impact on what you’ll spend.

That means tracking down the specific cost of a cruise for each person is difficult. But we can give you an idea of what a typical trip will cost based on averages and help you know better what you can plan to spend.

We get into all the details of how much a cruise costs — and exactly where you’ll spend money — below.

Where You’ll Spend Money on a Cruise

Think that the cost of a cruise is simply the fare that you pay to get on the ship? While that makes up the lion’s share of your spending, there’s a lot more that goes into the cost of your vacation.

Cruise Fare Of course, when most people think of the cost of a cruise, they are thinking mainly of the price of the cruise fare. This fare is what the cruise line charges for you to sail on the ship. Cruise fare includes your cabin, most meals, entertainment on the ship, access to pools, lounges, and more.

What it doesn’t include are the extras like alcoholic drinks, specialty restaurants, shore excursions, gambling and other things bought on board.

What you pay for your fare can vary widely. Factors that go into the price include the type of cabin you choose, length of cruise, when you sail, and even the ship and cruise line you sail.

Short cruises on budget cruise lines can run as little as a few hundred dollars, while long luxury trips can run well into the thousands — and even tens of thousands — of dollars per person.

Onboard Spending Think you’re done spending money after you buy your cruise fare? Think again. Once on the ship there are lots of extras that you will likely want to purchase that add to the cost of your cruise.

Onboard spending casts a wide net. It includes everything from money spent gambling in the casino to alcohol, specialty restaurants, cruise line shore excursions, and even the souvenirs you buy in the gift shop.

Ship keycard on top of cash money

Just like with the cruise fare, different people will spend different amounts. We’ve personally been on cruises and spent nothing extra on the ship. Other times we’ve spent hundreds.

If you’re frugal, you can get by with spending little. If you want to let loose and have fun, it will add hundreds (and maybe thousands) to your cruise fare. As a rule of thumb, expect to spend between 30-40% of your cruise fare in onboard spending. That’s around what the cruise companies show as the amount earned in onboard spending in their financial reports.

Gratuities If you’ve never sailed on a cruise before, you might be unsure of exactly what gratuities are and how they work.

These days gratuities are automatically charged to your account; everyone pays them. You can choose to prepay them when you buy your cruise, or have them charged to your onboard spending account and pay the balance at the end of your trip.

Rates vary across cruise lines, but are usually around $15 per person, per day. So a couple traveling on a seven-day cruise will pay about $200 in gratuities.

What do the charges go to? They are shared among the staff, with most going to your cabin steward. Waitstaff also receive a significant portion.  (For more on gratuities, see our complete guide here .)

Getting to the Ship (Transportation, Parking, Hotel) Whether you fly, ride, or drive to the port, you will have some more expenses that you have to consider for your budget.

5 month long cruise

Getting a ride to the port? Don’t forget to factor in the cost of transportation to get to and from the cruise ship.

Driving to the port? If so, know that most ports charge around $20 per day to park (although some hotels and independent parking lots offer discounted rates).

If you fly in for your cruise, then you need to factor in your airfare. We also suggest anyone flying in to arrive the day before you sail and get a hotel room, just to avoid any delays that might cause you to miss your ship.

Spending in Port Finally, the last part of your budget to consider is what you spend in port. Most of the time, this is actually relatively little as so much time is spent on the ship.

Excursions not booked through the cruise line would be in this section (those booked through the cruise line are onboard spending, mentioned above). Your port spending also includes things you do in port like catching a taxi to a beach, food and drink at a restaurant, or buying souvenirs.

One Note About Cruising in 2024

Of course the world has changed since the health crisis. Nowhere is that more the case than with cruising. The entire industry was shut down for almost all of 2020 and slowly made its return in 2021. After 2023, we can say that cruising is back with ships sailing at full capacity.

But just like on land, but there are bigger changes that could impact the cost of a cruise going forward.

Longer-Term Pricing During the stop, the major cruise companies took on massive amounts of debt to survive. Now as cruising resumes, they are focused on improving their balance sheets. That has meant higher pricing, if the market allows. Cruise lines have said repeatedly that demand is strong and onboard spending is at considerably higher levels than before the pause.

As well, several cruise lines sold off a number older, smaller ships. In general, older ships offer lower pricing. Along with the removal of older ships, new ships have come onto the market such as Carnival Celebration and Jubilee, as well as Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas.

With more newer ships priced at a premium and a push to shore up balance sheets, longer term pricing seems likely to rise.

Inflation Pressures The biggest economic story of 2022 was inflation, and it didn’t stop at the water’s edge. It’s a worldwide issue that also impact cruise lines. Prices for many things, including services like wi-fi on cruise ships and gratuity charges have increased.

The good news is that following strong price increases since cruising returned, anecdotally it seems that the hikes have calmed for now. That said, don’t be surprised if prices still climb some in the coming year.

Average Total Cost of a Cruise in 2024

5 month long cruise

So with all these different things to spend money on, how much does it cost to take a cruise?

As we mentioned above, the cost of your specific cruise will vary. Those who want an interior cabin will spend less than those sailing a suite. And people who can sail during the spring or fall will save hundreds versus sailing in the summer.

But we have some estimates below to give you an idea of the cost of taking a cruise.

Cruise Fare ($150-$245 per day) Obviously it’s impossible to give you a specific cost of your cruise fare. There are so many different factors that go into what you’ll pay, including:

  • Cruise line
  • Specific ship
  • Date of cruise
  • Trip length

That means the price you pay will see a wide range . Sailings can be less than $100 per person, per day, into several hundreds of dollars each day.

That said, we can get a good idea of what you’ll spend. All the major cruise lines are public companies that publish annual figures for their revenue and passenger statistics.

From these public reports, we know that the average cost of cruise fare runs from about $150-$245 per person, per day (depending on cruise company).

For example, in the trailing 12 months (the latest data available publicly), Carnival Corporation — which owns several different lines including Carnival, Princess, Cunard, and others — took in $12.8 billion in ticket revenue, and sailed 86.0 million passenger days. That comes out to $149 per person, per day.

Royal Caribbean Group was slightly higher based on their last 12 months of financial reports, ($175 per person, per day), and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. came in at the top of our list ($245 per person, per day).

Of course, those figures are averages across the entire company. Specific cruises can be much lower… or much higher… depending on your specifics. For example, sailing an interior cabin is drastically cheaper than sailing in a balcony room. And cruises departing in January or February are less expensive than sailing at the height of summer.

Still, these figures should give you a good idea of the average cost of a cruise based on what others pay across different cruise companies.

Port Fees and Taxes (~$100-$200 per person)

Port fees and taxes aren’t technically part of your cruise fare, but they are included in what you pay before you board.

So how much will you pay?

The amount varies depending on your specific route as different ports charge different fees. In our experience, for most cruises expect to spend between $100 and $200 per person on these fees and taxes. Some cruises with fewer ports will be less.

As a rule of thumb, the more ports of call, the higher these fees can be. On some cruises they can definitely be more than $200, but we’ve rarely seen them below $100 — except for some of the shortest trips with only one or two stops.

Onboard Spending (~$85-$120 per day) By far the biggest expense of taking a cruise is the fare, but onboard spending can be a considerable chunk of change.

So how much will you spend? We dove into detail about spending on a cruise ship before . Cruise lines also break down how much cruise passengers spend in their financial reports. On average across cruise lines, the amount comes out to between $85-120 per person, per day.

Carnival Corporation and Royal Caribbean Group saw an average around $85 per person, per day in the last year. Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. saw closer to $120 per person each day.

But you should know that this doesn’t mean you’ll be spending that much each day. With the accounting rules used by the cruise lines, sometimes money spent before you get on the ship is actually classified as “onboard and other” spending .

So if you buy a bundle package that includes your cruise fare and drink package, wi-fi, and other goodies (such as NCL’s “Free at Sea” offer) all in one transaction, some of that is considered onboard spending and some is the cruise fare.

As well, keep in mind that this is simply an average across all cruise passengers and major cruise lines. What you spend could be drastically different. For instance, some people spend little or no money on the ship. Others purchase drink packages, gamble in the casino, and generally live it up the entire trip.

In fact, onboard spending is the area where you have the most control over what you’ll spend .

Gratuities (~$16-20 per day) Yes, you can adjust the amount of gratuities if your service is particularly poor. In reality, not many people do. Expect to spend about $16-20 per person, per day.

Gratuities may be slightly higher or lower depending on the cruise line. As well, suites have higher gratuity rates compared to lower-tier cabins. So while you might pay $16 per day for a normal cabin, that amount might be $18 per day (or more) if staying in a suite.

Note that this amount doesn’t include gratuities charged for extras like alcoholic beverages on the ship. Those are extra in addition to the automatic gratuities charged to each passenger that go to the waitstaff and room steward.

Getting to the Ship/Parking/Hotel (Varies) The amount that it will cost you to get to the ship, park, and/or a hotel stay will vary based on your needs.

Some people just get dropped off at the port by a friend or family member, so it costs them nothing. Others have to book a cross-country flight and a hotel stay the night before.

If you drive to the port, plan to spend around $20 per day for parking, depending on the port. Hotels in most port cities can be found for between $150-250 per night. Rides to the port using services like a taxi or Uber/Lyft can vary considerably depending on where you are coming from. Still, you don’t want to forget these considerable expenses in cruising.

Spending in Port (~$50 per port) What you spend in port can vary widely. Remember anything you eat or drink off the ship will come out of pocket and isn’t included in your cruise fare. As well, things like taxis and souvenirs are also extra.

As a rule of thumb, we estimate a budget of about $50 per person, per port of call. For some ports that may be too much. For instance, cruise line private islands often have much of what you need already included. Other ports might include a stop at a restaurant, some souvenir shopping, and buying drinks.

Summing Up the Total Cost of a Cruise

So what’s the grand total?

The chart below lays out the costs of taking a cruise, using the estimated amounts mentioned above. We’ve also laid out the estimates for both a shorter cruise (five days) and the traditional seven-day trip.

Keep in mind that these are just estimates, per person . A couple would expect to double these prices.

As well, remember that what you spend will vary widely based on any number of factors , including your own budgeting for the trip and how much you let loose on your vacation.

Sailing in the off-season like January or February? Then your cruise fare can be considerably less than average. Are you a big spender on the ship? Then your vacation will obviously end up costing more.

But as you can see, on a per-person basis the cost for a 7-day cruise can run around $2,000 when you factor in everything you’ll spend. Shorter cruises will run around $1,500 .

True cost of world’s longest cruise that lasts for nine months straight and what it gets you

It's not cheap, and then some.

Tom Earnshaw

Cruise ship holidays aren't cheap. But a two week excursion around the Mediterranean might feel like a bargain compared to what we've found.

Enter the cruise ship final boss. We're talking a nine month long cruise ship holiday taking you across the entire planet. And the price of such a holiday is going to leave you wide eyed.

Alright, we know that cruises aren't for everybody. Some love nothing more than lying on the beach or a city break.

But millions head to the open waters every year, so there's clearly a demand for it. And for many, it'll allow them to do the likes of a city break and beach trip through day trip excursions, meaning all boxes are left ticked.

There's also very particular kinds of cruise holidays , including those of the spicy variety where couples share sexual partners .

That's not officially on the cards with this one, though.

Enter Royal Caribbean's Ultimate World Cruise on board the 22-year-old Serenade of the Seas.

Officially the world's longest cruise, it'll take passengers around the world and to more than 60 countries for a grand total of 274 days.

Where does it take you?

There's a whole lot of options when it comes to the cruise, with it ranging from spending just nine days on board right up to the entire nine months, which includes travelling to see all eight wonders of the world .

We're talking The Great Pyramid of Giza and Rome's Colosseum all the way over to Machu Picchu in Peru.

But how much is it going to cost you to take the nine month trip?

Well, it's not cheap at all. But it does come with a lot of added extras included such as Wi-Fi , business class plane travel to get to the departure destination, and premium alcoholic drinks packages .

It's a very long time at sea (Ben McCanna/Portland Portland Press Herald via Getty Images)

Laundry is also included which is a necessity when you're there for nine months, with it done for you by staff. Your tips to the staff are also included in the total price.

"Considering all that’s included in your 274-night Ultimate World Cruise fare, you’ll enjoy an incredible value," Royal Caribbean states.

"No matter which stateroom you choose, your fare includes Ultimate World Cruise complimentary amenities like business class airfare, pre-cruise hotel and gala, Deluxe Beverage Package, gratuities, VOOM internet package, wash and fold laundry service, and more."

On board the Serenade of the Seas (Royal Caribbean)

There are four cabin options to pick from on the Ultimate World Cruise.

The cheapest is the Interior Stateroom, which starts at a whopping $59,999 (£47,176). And that's per person, not per cabin. You get a 10% discount ($6,000 discount) if you pay-in-full,

An Ocean View Stateroom that costs from £64,999 (£51,108) per person; a Balcony Stateroom is $82,949 (£65,221) a person; and the Junior Suites start from $117,599 (£92,466) a person.

There are also other premium suites on board but for those, you have to call the cruise line directly for pricing.

The costs don't stop there. Taxes, fees, and port expenses of $4,667 (£3,669) a person will be added on top of the cabin.

The world cruise has gone viral on TikTok , with many giving their two cents over the holiday.

One said: "If money was no object, I absolutely would take this trip."

Another wrote: "This will become a boomer cruise."

And a third posted: "Think about how much money you would save from not buying gas and groceries, as well as other expenses."

A fourth echoed this, saying: "That's not bad considering. Rent, food, gas, etc and you get to travel the world while you do it? If you work remote this might be worth it."

I've Been on Over 25 Cruises, Here is How I Cruise on a Budget

L ooking to go on a cruise without spending too much money? The good news is that cruising on a budget is very doable. I’m sharing my cruise tips to help you get the best cruise deals and save money while cruising. These practical tips are perfect for those of you who want to make the most of your cruise experience without spending too much money.

How to Cruise on a Budget

1. book the cheapest room on an old ship.

A simple yet effective way to save money on a cruise is to book the cheapest room on the oldest ship. Typically, the inside cabin is the most affordable option, and the oldest ships are the cheapest.

Cruise lines charge a premium for the newest ships, even for the same itinerary. By choosing the oldest ship’s cheapest room, I am able to take more cruises throughout the year. I personally prefer cruising on older ships, and you can read about why I enjoy cruising on older ships in my article.

2. Look for Last Minute Deals on Repositioning Cruises

If you’re looking to go on a cruise on a budget, booking last minute deals is the way to go. Last minute deals on repositioning cruises usually offer the best cruise deals.

Repositioning cruises is when a ship moves from one region to another, such as moving from Europe and ending up in Florida. These cruises typically have plenty of sea days and are often longer than usual. They take place during the shoulder off-peak season, but if you keep an eye out, you can find some incredible last-minute deals.

You can even get deals for as low as $50 per person per night on these repositioning cruises. For more information on how to get the best last-minute deals , check out my article.

3. Go During Off Peak

Another way to save money is by cruising during the off-season. During the summer and Holidays, cruising is at its peak, which means that prices are higher.

However, if you choose to go during the fall and winter months, such as September, you may be able to find some great deals on cruise fares.

Or if you’re willing to take the risk of traveling during hurricane season, you can get some cheap deals on Caribbean cruises. If you cruise during hurricane season, check out my anti-seasickness advice .

Another benefit of going on a cruise during the off-season is that the ship and ports will be less crowded.

4. Keep an Eye Out for Sales and Promotions

I never book a cruise at full price, and I always search for deals on cruises. Cruise lines are always having sales and promotions such as free gratuity, free Wi-Fi, free beverage packages, free 3rd and 4th person, or even kids sail free.

Their biggest sales are during the Wave season, which is from January to March, as well as on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Over the years, I have saved a lot of money by looking for deals. If you want to know more, check out my article on when is the best time to book a cruise to get the best deal.

5. Check for Cheaper Shore Excursions

Cruise shore excursions are expensive. To save money, you need to shop around for cheaper shore excursions.

You can do this by booking directly with independent tour operators such as Viator to save money on shore excursions. The cruise line shore excursion is usually more expensive because they charge a premium for the guarantee that the ship won’t leave without you.

However, in my experience, independent operators often offer the same tour at a lower price, and since they do the same tour with cruise passengers every week, getting left behind is never an issue.

I always compare the prices of the cruise shore excursions with those offered by  Viator . I have saved a lot of money by booking cheaper shore excursions.

Suburbs 101 participates in affiliate programs including Amazon Associates Program and may earn from qualifying purchases at no extra cost to you.

6. Depart from a Port You Can Drive To

Choosing a port that is close to your home is a great way to save money on your cruise. You can save a lot by not having to pay for airfare. Your transportation costs will be greatly reduced to just car parking fees or perhaps just the price of an Uber or taxi.

For example, I live near New York so when I go on a Caribbean cruise, I always depart from one of the New York cruise ports instead of flying to Florida.

7. Bring Your Own Wine

Every penny counts if you are on a budget. One great way to save money on a cruise is by bringing your own wine. This is a money-saving cruise hack that many cruisers are not aware of.

For example, Royal Caribbean permits each guest to bring one sealed 750 ml bottle of wine or champagne, while Disney Cruise Line allows two unopened bottles of wine or champagne. You can only bring wine on embarkation day and not from the port. Check with your cruise line to see what’s allowed.

It’s worth noting that if you bring your bottle of wine to the main dining room, you will have to pay corkage. To avoid this, I suggest getting wine glasses from the bar and borrowing a corkscrew from your cabin steward.

You can enjoy your wine in your stateroom. I always pour myself a glass of wine and take it with me to the lobby so I can enjoy it with live music.

8. Get Free Champagne

Alcoholic beverages can be quite expensive on a cruise. However, there are ways to save money on drinks while on a cruise.

Many first-time cruisers don’t realize that they can get free drinks on a cruise. It’s actually quite easy to get free champagne. All you have to do is attend cruise art auctions, where they typically serve free champagne to guests. The best part is that there is no obligation to buy anything from the art auction.

In addition to art auctions, there are other ways to get complimentary drinks. Simply check the daily planner to see if there are any gift shop events offering free liquor samples to attract customers to their store. Keep in mind that you’re more likely to find free champagne and free tasting events on sea days rather than port days.

For more tips on how to get free champagne and drinks on a cruise, be sure to check out my article on 10 ways to get free champagne and drinks .

9. Bring Essentials from Home

Buying toiletries and other essentials is expensive on a cruise. To avoid paying exorbitant cruise ship prices, I always make sure to pack toiletries and OTC medicines, so I don’t have to buy them on the ship. I have a toiletry bag packing list that I print to help with my packing, check it out .

Also, bringing a refillable water bottle to the cruise is another smart way to save money. You can easily refill it at the buffet, and it comes in handy to have it with you on shore excursions and in your stateroom.

By using a refillable water bottle, you avoid buying expensive bottled water on the ship and save yourself the hassle of repeatedly going back to the buffet for water.

In my opinion, an insulated water bottle without a straw is a great choice because you don’t have to deal with washing straws in your cabin.

10. Use the Cruise Ship Laundromat

If you’re going on a long cruise or traveling with kids, it’s likely that you will end up having to do some laundry. One way to save money while on your cruise is to use the coin-operated laundromat on the ship instead of the laundry service, which can be quite expensive.

Before I go on a cruise, I always check to see if the cruise ship I’m going on has a laundromat. It is usually cheap and some cruise lines like Princess Cruise will even let you wash your clothes for free (you just need to pay for detergent).

If the ship you’re on doesn’t have a laundromat, you can still do some light washing in your cabin. I always bring these travel laundry packets just in case.

11. Take Advantage of Shareholder Benefits

Another way I save money on cruising is to take advantage of shareholder benefits. Many cruise lines offer onboard credit to shareholders, which can range from $50 to $1000.

The amount of credit you receive depends on the duration of your cruise. You will also need to own a minimum number of shares to get the shareholder benefit.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to get free money from cruise lines. Check out my article on how to take advantage of cruise shareholder benefit .
