Lufthansa Miles & More Program Overview

Lufthansa’s frequent flyer program is called Miles & More, and the airline miles that you earn are called Lufthansa miles.

The Miles & More program can be a great way to fly a Star Alliance airline partner like United Airlines .

You’ll earn 3 different kinds of miles in the Lufthansa Miles & More program.

The first type is called Award Miles . These miles are for award flights and are valid for 36 months .

For Frequent Travellers (lowest elite level), Senators (mid-tier elite level), HON Circle Members (highest elite tier), and JetFriends (under 18 years old), award miles remain valid as long as you maintain your elite status.

The second type is called Status Miles . These miles determine your Frequent Traveller and Senator status, and are counted in the calendar year in which they are credited. Every status mile is also counted as an award mile.

The third type is called HON Circle Miles . These miles count towards achieving HON Circle status, and they are counted over 2 successive years .

Lufthansa miles can be earned in many ways; here are the 2 most common:

• Flying Lufthansa or its partner airline flights
• Earning with Lufthansa’s hotel, travel, and car rental partners

Once you complete your application, you’ll have the ability to earn miles by flying with Lufthansa or its partner airlines, earn elite status, and redeem miles for award flights .

How to Sign in to Your Lufthansa Miles & More Account

Head to the Lufthansa login page and enter your membership number and password.

Hot Tip:  Lufthansa requires you to have at least 7,000 miles in your account to search for an award flight. If you don’t have 7,000 miles, you’ll want to use the program’s mileage calculator to determine the number of miles required for your flight.

Points Expiration

Lufthansa miles expire at the end of the quarter 36 months after the miles were earned .

For example, miles earned in October 2019 will expire December 31, 2022.

The program does allow you to extend the expiration of your miles in 2 ways:

• Hold a co-branded Lufthansa credit card, make at least 1 purchase per month, and have an account that’s been opened for at least 3 months

Once you qualify for elite status in a calendar year, the benefits begin immediately and are valid for 2 years.

Frequent Traveller:  The lowest elite tier offered by Lufthansa, which comes with the following benefits:

• Earn up to 50% more award miles, 25% more miles towards elite Status

Senator:  After earning this status level, you’ll have access to additional benefits including:

Earning elite status with Lufthansa makes the most sense if you fly Lufthansa, Austrian, or Swiss regularly — or if you are looking for elite benefits when flying a Star Alliance partner like United Airlines .

Earning Lufthansa Elite Status

Miles & More is the free frequent flyer program for not only Lufthansa, but also major airlines including Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, and LOT Polish Airlines.

By signing up for a Miles & More membership, you’ll have the ability to earn and redeem Lufthansa Miles, as well as work your way toward elite status.

The Miles & More program requires you to earn miles or board a certain number of flights in a calendar year to reach elite status.

Miles & More calculates the miles you earn on flights differently for each airline that is a part of the program, using different factors to determine the number of miles you earn.

For Lufthansa, the Miles & More program calculates the miles you earn by multiplying the fare by a factor of 6 .

As an example, if you take a $290 round-trip flight from Frankfurt to Munich on Lufthansa, you’ll earn 1,740 Lufthansa miles ($290 fare x 6).

How to Earn Lufthansa Miles

The Miles & More program offers 2 primary ways to earn airline miles:

While it’s challenging to earn Lufthansa miles, when you pair the options above together, you’ll at least have a couple of ways to  earn Lufthansa miles .

Earning Miles Through Flying

The Lufthansa miles you earn are based on the distance flown and the factor, which depends on your frequent flyer status and the airline operating your flight.

For example, if you fly a $290 Brussels Airlines flight from Brussels (BRU) to Berlin (TXL), you’ll earn 1,450 miles ($290 * 5 factor).

The Miles & More program calculates miles earned based on the distance flown and booking class.

For European flights, the booking class is a flat rate. For intercontinental flights, mileage is calculated by multiplying the booking class by the distance flown.

Earning Bonus Miles in Other Ways

The Miles & More program offers a few ways to earn Lufthansa miles that don’t involve flying.

Miles & More is Europe's largest loyalty program by a few metrics, most notably the number of airlines. Operated by the Lufthansa Group , the frequent flyer program is shared by SWISS , Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, and Lufthansa , as well as LOT Polish and Luxair. Given the massive earning potential, here's a deep dive into the different tiers offered by Miles & More.

One of the major perks of qualifying with Miles & More compared to other programs is that all status lasts for two full years. Moreover, if you qualify higher, you also receive a soft landing to the next lower tier in case you fail to meet the needed requirements. As a Star Alliance member, status levels also give you status with all alliance partners.

Frequent Traveller

The lowest Miles & More status is Frequent Traveller (which matches over to Star Alliance Silver) . But don't think this means only entry-level benefits seen at other carriers. This tier with comes with major perks but isn't easy to achieve either. Until January 1st, 2024, here is what you need to qualify for Frequent Traveller,

• 35,000 status miles in one calendar year; or
• 30 flight segments in one calendar year

You'll hear the term status miles a lot in the program. Status miles are calculated by multiplying the distance flown (in miles) by the percentage of the fare class for intercontinental routes. On European routes, a flat rate applies. For example, London to Frankfurt roundtrip in economy will yield 1,000 status miles and 4,000 status miles in business class. The math is a bit more complicated for intercontinental routes, but full-fare tickets can yield huge miles. Note that award miles are calculated differently and we will touch on that in our next article.

If you managed to achieve either of these requirements, Miles & More has some major perks for the next two years,

• Access to business class lounges of Lufthansa, SWISS, Brussels Airlines, and Austrian when flying with a group airline
• Additional checked luggage
• Access to business class check-in and priority boarding
• 25% status miles bonus
• A physical card and bag tag (a rarity among carriers these days)
• Unlimited miles validity (usually 36 months)

As you can see, Miles & More is one of the few programs offering lounge access at its lowest tier. While it only applies to lounges operated by Lufthansa Group airlines (plus select partners like LOT), it is a good perk if you live or frequently travel through Europe's major hubs like Frankfurt, Zurich, London, or Warsaw.

Miles & More is clearly targeted at high-spending travelers, with Senator status (Star Alliance Gold) requiring 100,000 status miles in one calendar year. For reference, that would mean 25 roundtrips from London to Frankfurt in business class or a dozen or so long-haul international business class flights.

If you manage to achieve this, there are a long list of benefits:

• Access to Lufthansa Senator, all Lufthansa Group, and Star Alliance Gold lounges globally
• Two upgrade vouchers (one voucher provides a one-class upgrade in an award region)
• First class check-in counters and priority boarding
• 25% bonus status miles and 50% more award miles
• 50% discount on companion awards (half the miles needed for a companion flying with you on the same flight, booked at the same time)

The list of benefits is far longer, including some unique ones like the ability to overdraw 50,000 award miles to book redemptions and a free checked golf bag. Safe to say, you'll be well taken care of with Senator status. But that's not where it stops.

Creme de la creme: HON Circle

If you find yourself among some of the busiest passengers in the world, you might hit HON Circle status. It requires 600,000 status miles collected over two calendar years. Intra-European won't cut it for this tier (unless you make 150 trips, roughly one every five days - in business class), you'll need some serious mileage in premium cabins. As expected the benefits don't disappoint,

• First class check-in, boarding, and access to the Lufthansa First Terminal at Frankfurt Airport and first class lounges at SWISS and Austrian.
• Limousine pick up and drop from the terminal and aircraft on all Lufthansa, SWISS, Air Dolomiti, and LOT Polish flights
• Gift Senator status to your spouse or partner
• Six upgrade vouchers
• Plus all the benefits of Senator and Frequent Traveller status

The summary

Miles & More demands a lot from its travelers, but it provides the benefits to back up its earning. If you live in Europe and travel frequently within the continent, Frequent Traveller is an achievable target and will guarantee lounge access at major airports. However, Senator status requires a lot more distance and spending, meaning Star Alliance Gold and global lounge access is out of reach. There are far easier ways to achieve Gold, so choosing Miles & More doesn't make too much sense unless you live at a hub and consistently travel globally.

Lufthansa Group has grown a ton in recent years. We've seen the group buy up a number of European airlines, all while continuing to expand the Lufthansa route network from its hubs in Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC). One thing you may not know about Lufthansa is that its Miles & More loyalty program is actually used by a number of different airlines around Europe, some of which aren't in the Star Alliance.

Additionally, the loyalty program has some interesting sweet spots that make it worth taking a closer look at if you're based in Europe. Plus, U.S. based flyers that frequently fly to Europe on Lufthansa or another Lufthansa Group airline may find more use in earning Miles & More miles than United or another Star Alliance partner.

If you find yourself curious about the Miles & More program, you're in the right place. Here, we'll run you through everything you need to know about Miles & More, starting with elite status and partner airlines, then moving to earning and redeeming points.

Program Overview

Miles & More is owned by Lufthansa Group, but it's used as the primary loyalty program for a number of different airlines throughout Europe. Other airlines that use Miles & More as their primary loyalty program include:

• Air Dolomiti
• Austrian Airlines
• Brussels Airlines
• Croatia Airlines
• LOT Polish Airlines

Many of these airlines are either entirely owned by Lufthansa Group or have previously been partially or wholly owned by the group. However, some airlines — namely LOT Polish and Croatia Airlines — have never been affiliated with Lufthansa Group but still opt to use Miles & More as a loyalty program.

Miles & More elite status tiers and benefits

Like most airline loyalty programs, Miles & More offers a variety of different elite status tiers that offer elevated mileage earnings and benefits like lounge access, upgrades and fast track security. In the case of Miles & More, there are three different status tiers: Frequent Traveller, Senator and HON Circle.

Earning Miles & More elite status

Frequent Traveller and Senator status are earned after you accrue 35,000 and 100,000 status miles, respectively, in a calendar year. These are earned by flying on Miles & More airlines (excluding Condor) and Star Alliance airline partners. Additionally, you can earn Frequent Traveller status by flying 30 flights on Miles & More airlines (excluding Condor).

Top-tier Hon Circle status is earned by accruing 600,000 Hon Circle miles over the course of two consecutive calendar years. You can only earn these miles by flying first or business class fares on Miles & More airlines (excluding Condor), and when taking the Lufthansa Express Rail in Germany and Airtrain in Switzerland.

For reference, Hon Circle miles are the same as status qualifying miles, except they're restricted to first and business class. Here's a quick overview of how to earn qualifying miles on all Miles & More airlines.

It's true that you need to fly a lot to earn Hon Circle status, but the good news is that Miles & More awards bonus Hon Circle miles when flying premium cabins. Business travelers who book full-fare, intercontinental business class have the easiest route to Hon Circle status; these earn 2 Hon Circle qualifying miles per mile flown, so a 7,680-mile round-trip flight from New York-JFK to Frankfurt (FRA) would earn 15,360 Hon Circle miles.

On the other hand, flights within Germany and Europe earn miles at a fixed rate. For example, despite a flight from Frankfurt (FRA) to Berlin (TXL) clocking in at just 267 miles one-way, you'd earn 500 qualifying miles each way in discounted P fare business class. The same goes for all other German domestic routes on Lufthansa, Swiss domestic routes in Switzerland, etc.

Intra-Europe flights earn a slightly more miles, especially when flying in business class. For example, let's say you're flying from Frankfurt (FRA) to Oslo (OSL). A business class P fare would earn 750 qualifying miles. However, if you booked in a higher fare class, you'd earn a whopping 2,000 qualifying miles. Not bad for a flight distance of just 686 miles!

So in the end, HON Circle status is for flyers that fly Lufthansa exclusively and in premium cabins. As you'd expect, this is generally business travelers with lots of international travel. You could earn HON Circle status by flying 100,000 miles per year in paid first class, 150,000 miles per year in full-fare business class or a mixture of these with domestic European flying.

Crediting flights on Star Alliance partners to Lufthansa Miles & More counts towards elite status. The number of miles you'll earn varies by airline partner, the length of your flight and your fare class.

To calculate how many miles you'll earn, find your partner on the Miles & More website and take a look at the earning chart to find the earning rate. Then, multiply the distance of your flight (in miles) by the earning rate for your fare class. In the case of a Z fare United business class ticket from Chicago-O'Hare (ORD) to London-Heathrow (LHR), you'd earn 5,910 miles. The flight is 3,940 miles and you earn 1.5 qualifying miles per mile flown.

Qualifying requirements are changing in 2022

Miles & More is changing status requirements in 2022 . So while you'll earn status for 2021 and 2022 using the metrics above, earning status for the 2023 calendar year in 2022 is based on the number of Points and Qualifying Points you earn. Points are earned on Star Alliance partner airlines, while Qualifying Points are earned on Miles & More airlines.

The number of Points and Qualifying points you'll earn is based on your class of service and whether you're flying within Europe or on an intercontinental flight. Fare class is no longer a factor, so discount fares will earn the same as full-fare tickets. The chart above shows how many Qualifying Points and Points you'll earn for each type of ticket.

Each status tier requires a different amount of Points or Qualifying Points to qualify. In the case of Frequent Traveller and Senator status, you need to earn 160 and 480 Points, respectively. Half of those can be Qualifying Points earned on partner airlines. HON Circle requires 1,500 Points over the course of a single year to qualify, but they can now be earned in economy and premium economy.

Further, members can earn additional perks after hitting specific thresholds. For example, Senator members will earn two eVouchers (valid for one-class upgrades) when they reach 700 qualifying points, and 15,000 award miles after reaching 1,000 qualifying points.

Overall, I think these changes are a good thing. They make status earning much easier to understand, and opens HON Circle status up to those that frequently fly in economy class for work and pleasure. Regardless, though, you'll still need to fly on Miles & More airlines a lot to earn HON Circle.

Miles & More elite status benefits

Earning Lufthansa status isn't easy, but each of the status tiers come with interesting benefits. In fact, top-tier HON Circle status comes with some of the most premium perks of all airline statuses — here's a look at each of the tier's respective benefits.

Frequent Traveller

Frequent Traveller is the lowest tier of Miles & More status, but it still has some solid benefits. You'll have access to Lufthansa Business Class lounges when flying on Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance carriers. You're also eligible for business class check-in, one extra checked bag, and other Star Alliance Silver benefits.

Further, you'll also earn 50% more redeemable miles and 25% more status and HON Circle qualifying miles on all paid tickets. This applies to all flights you credit to Miles & More, including flights booked on Star Alliance carriers like United.

These benefits are surprisingly rich for low-tier elite status. Just keep in mind that you can only access Lufthansa Business Class lounges, not Star Alliance partner lounges like United Clubs or the Air Canada Maple Leaf lounges. This is because Frequent Traveller includes Star Alliance Silver benefits, not Star Alliance Gold.

Senator offers even more benefits for frequent flyers. You're eligible for access to Lufthansa Senator lounge as well as all Star Alliance partner lounges when flying on a Star Alliance carrier. This includes domestic U.S. United Club access when flying United Airlines, so long as you add your Miles & More number to your ticket.

Further, you can access first class check-in, receive two extra checked bags, and two eVouchers that you can use for a one-class upgrade. You can use one eVoucher for an upgrade within a single region or two vouchers for an intercontinental one-class upgrade. As an example, upgrading from premium economy to business on a transatlantic flight requires two eVouchers.

Another great perk of Senator status is access to Companion Awards. This lets you add a companion to all award tickets at a 50% mileage discount. This applies when flying award tickets on Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, Air Dolomiti, Eurowings, Luxair, LOT Polish Airlines, Brussels Airlines and Croatia Airlines.

Miles & More Senator status also gives you access to other Star Alliance Gold benefits like preferred baggage handling, priority boarding on Star Alliance partners and other various perks. Like Frequent Traveller, you'll earn 50% more award miles and 25% more status qualifying miles on all flights.

HON Circle is the cream of the crop when it comes to Miles & More status. It includes all Senator status benefits mentioned in the last section, but also includes First Class Terminal access at Frankfurt (FRA) on all Miles & More flights regardless of the class of service. This is a huge perk as the terminal is a dedicated space for first-class and HON Circle travelers, with upgraded lounges and more.

Plus, you're eligible for a limousine transfer on flights operated by Air Dolomiti, Austrian Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa and SWISS. Where applicable, a limousine will pick you up from the plane, drop you off at the lounge and then drive you back to your flight. This is generally reserved for first-class passengers, so it's a treat to experience on all flights.

You'll also receive six upgrade eVouchers, which can be used in the same way that Senator members can use certificates.

Earning with Miles & More

Miles & More miles are significantly harder to earn than other airline miles. The loyalty program doesn't have transfer partners and cannot transfer in from hotel loyalty programs like Marriott Bonvoy. But that doesn't mean they're impossible to earn — here are all the best ways.

Earn by flying on Miles & More and Star Alliance carriers

You can earn Miles & More miles by flying on Miles & More and Star Alliance airlines. Tickets booked with a Miles & More member airline — like Lufthansa and Swiss — will earn miles based on fare cost. If you're traveling on a Star Alliance partner flight that's not ticketed by a Miles & More airline, you'll earn miles based on distance flown. On multi-airline itineraries that include a Miles & More member, you'll earn miles based on fare cost.

For example, say you book a round-trip ticket from Chicago-O'Hare (ORD) to Frankfurt (FRA) through the Lufthansa website, with one leg operated by Lufthansa and the other by United. You'll earn miles based on spend. Miles & More awards 4 points per Euro spent on these tickets (excluding taxes). If you have elite status, you'll earn 6 points per Euro spent.

On the other hand, you'll earn miles based on distance flown if you're flying on a Star Alliance partner flight that's not ticketed by a Miles & More airline. For example, if you're flying on a Singapore Airlines flight booked with Singapore Airlines over the phone or a United Airlines flight booked through United.com.

The number of miles earned depend on the length of your flight and your booking class. Simply find your partner airline on the Miles & More website, look at the chart underneath the "Status miles / Booking class system" header. Then, find the fare class of your ticket in the chart and multiply the number under the Miles column to see how many miles you'll earn.

For example, a South African Airways fin M fare economy class would earn 790 miles on a flight between Cape Town (CPT) and Johannesburg (JNB). This is because the flight is 790 miles one-way and M fares earn 1x the distance flown.

Spend on a Miles & More credit card

In the U.S., Lufthansa and Miles & More offers a cobranded credit card issued by Barclay's called the Miles & More World Elite Mastercard . You can use this card to earn Miles & More miles on all of your purchases and it includes some added benefits, like two Lufthansa Business Class Lounge passes and an annual companion ticket.

Further, the card has a welcome bonus that usually hovers around 50,000 Miles & More points after you spend $3,000 in the first three months of account opening. Plus, you'll earn 2 miles per dollar spent on Miles & More ticket purchases and 1 mile per dollar everywhere else.

This card has an $89 annual fee and can be a good option for those set on earning Miles & More miles. However, if you frequently fly on other airlines, you may want to consider the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card instead. This card earns 2x Ultimate Rewards points on travel purchases, and the points can be transferred to airlines like United, Singapore Airlines and others. TPG values these points at 2 cents per point, 0.6 cents higher than Miles & More points.

Book hotel rooms and rental cars

You can also earn Miles & More miles when you book hotel rooms with the Miles & More hotel booking platform. You'll earn a minimum of 1,000 miles per night and more expensive hotels generally earn more points. Just note that you generally won't be able to earn hotel points or use hotel elite status benefits on these bookings, since you're booking through an Online Travel Agency (OTA). However, many boutique and independent hotels are listed on the Miles & More portal, so it may be worthwhile to use it to book hotels that you wouldn't otherwise earn points with.

You can also book rental cars through the portal, but you may not be able to use car rental status benefits or earn rental car status. As always, make sure to wage whether earning Miles & More points outweigh these possible exclusions.

One thing to keep in mind: always cross-check hotel and rental car prices when using the Miles & More hotel portal. While the prices are usually comparable to booking direct, sometimes the price can vary. Additionally, all prices are listed in euros, so make sure to use a card that doesn't charge foreign transaction fees .

Redeeming with Miles & More

We generally recommend redeeming your Miles & More miles for award travel. While you can redeem for merchandise, hotels and gift cards, this isn't recommended as you'll get a much lower redemption value than for flights.

Redeeming Miles & More miles for award flights

Miles & More employs a standard award chart, meaning that flights don't fluctuate in price. Award flights are priced based by zone and class of service, and you can book any Star Alliance flight that has award space. As for pricing, award flights are surprisingly reasonable. For example, transatlantic flights are 30,000 points in economy, 46,000 in premium economy class, 56,000 in business class and 91,000 in first class. Do note that Miles & More adds fuel surcharges for most tickets — in practice, this is about $320 per ticket for intercontinental flights. The only exception are Air Canada flights within North America and United Airlines flights within North America, South America and Oceania; these awards incur minimal taxes and fees.

Redeeming points for flights is easy — head to the Miles & More website and navigate to the spend miles page . Scroll to the center of the screen, enter your flight details and click the blue Search flights button at the bottom of the screen. Then, your flight options will appear at the center of the screen; click on the flight you want to book and follow the on-screen prompts to book.

In my research, I've found that nearly all Star Alliance partner flights show on the Miles & More booking website. This means that there's no reason to call in to book award tickets, and you can rely on the Miles & More search engine to show reliable flight results.

The best uses of Miles & More flights

Redeeming Miles & More miles is one thing, but finding a great redemption is another. The award chart is very reasonable and there are some real sweet spots to be found. Here's a look at a few of my personal favorites as a U.S. based traveler — use them as a jumping-off point for redeeming your Miles & More points.

Lufthansa First Class

Miles & More doesn't offer the best redemption value for transatlantic tickets in Lufthansa first class , but it does have the best available award space. Lufthansa only opens first class award space to its partners two weeks prior to departure, but this isn't the case for Miles & More. You can access Lufthansa first class award space months beforehand, so it's easier to plan vacations on one of the world's best first-class products.

North America to Oceania

Flights from the U.S. to Australia, New Zealand and the rest of Oceania cost just 71,000 miles one-way. If you book these awards on United Airlines, you won't pay high fuel surcharges either, given you a great way to fly Down Under on points and miles.

North America to Southeast Asia

Likewise, flights from North America to Southeast Asia cost just 71,000 miles one-way in business class. You'll have to pay fuel surcharges on these tickets, but you can fly awesome business class products on carriers like Air Canada , All Nippon Airways (ANA) and EVA Air for a fraction of the price of a revenue ticket.

Bottom line

Lufthansa Group's Miles & More program is one of the most rewarding loyalty programs on the market. HON Circle and Senator status offer standout benefits, and its redemption rates for premium class awards are some of the best out there. However, it's also one of the hardest mileage currencies to earn, especially for those of us that are based in the U.S.

As a member of the Star Alliance, Lufthansa Airlines’ Miles & More program works with partner airlines that allow you to redeem miles to fly almost anywhere in the world. Plus, Lufthansa’s first class cabin, which you can book with miles, is one of the most luxurious ways to fly from the U.S. to Europe.

But Miles & More has drawbacks. How to redeem your Lufthansa miles for flights

To find flights you can book with miles, log in to your account at Lufthansa’s Miles & More web page, navigate to "Spend Miles," then choose the "Flights" tab and enter your departure city, destination and dates.

The results page will show available flights on Lufthansa and partner airlines. Choose the best flight option by itinerary, price and cabin.

You can compare award flights within a seven-day time frame using the weekly calendar at the top of the results. If your travel dates are flexible, this can be a great way to make sure you are booking the cheapest flight option.

What to do if you have insufficient miles

One weakness of the Miles & More program is that it’s hard to search for award flights if you don’t have miles in your account. If you’re logged in to your account and go through the usual steps to search for an award flight, you’ll hit a dead end with a message that says you don’t have enough miles to book.

Get around this by logging out of your account, navigating to the "Spend Miles" page, then selecting the "Flights" tab. Enter your dates and destination to see prices for several months.

Click on the month to see the lowest prices for each day that month.

Then, click "Search Flights" and you’ll be prompted to log in to your account. This time, a page will load showing the results of the flight search you started.

Tips to calculate the value of your Miles & More miles

Miles & More tacks on high fuel surcharges to award flights for many routes. Paying hundreds of dollars in surcharges can defeat the purpose of redeeming miles, or at the very least cut into the value you get from your miles.

To see exactly how much value you’ll get redeeming Miles & More miles for your itinerary, use this formula:

(Price of flight in cash – taxes and fees for award flight) / price of flight in miles

For example, a recent search for a business class flight from Los Angeles to Vienna showed flights for 56,000 miles plus $675 in taxes and fees. The same flight paid with cash cost $3,229. That means you’re getting a value of about 4.6 cents per mile:

($3,229 – $675) / 56,000 = $0.0456

Top Miles & More sweet spots

Because you can use Miles & More miles on Star Alliance partner airlines, the options are seemingly unlimited as to where and how you can fly with your miles. You also have access to some of the best premium class cabins in the sky. Here are a few great ways to redeem Miles & More miles.

Fly Lufthansa first class to Europe

If you have been dreaming of flying in Lufthansa’s first class cabin, using Miles & More miles may just be the ticket. Lufthansa’s first class award seats are notoriously difficult to book using other Star Alliance airlines miles. Why? Because Lufthansa doesn’t release these first class seats for partner bookings until 15 days before departure.

However, with Miles & More, you can book Lufthansa first class awards up to 360 days before departure, giving you dibs on the most coveted seats.

You’ll need 91,000 miles to book a one-way first class flight from the U.S. to Europe, plus fuel surcharges that can exceed $800.

Fly United first class from New York City to California

For 20,000 Miles & More miles each way, you can fly from New York or New Jersey to San Francisco or Los Angeles on United’s Premium Service, which features a lie-flat seat. Although you’ll be flying in United’s first class cabin, this award is actually coded as a business class award when booked using Miles & More. The best part is that taxes and fees are normally under $50 on a one-way flight.

Save miles with discounted awards

Early bird flight awards.

Miles & More offers several ways for you to book discounted award flights . Early Bird flight awards allow you to save up to 65% on select economy class awards at least 30 days in advance.

Last-minute awards

If last-minute travel is more your thing, you can still get up to 50% savings on select last-minute awards operated by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, SWISS, Eurowings, Brussels Airlines, Condor Airlines and LOT Polish Airlines.

Bargain awards

Another excellent way to stretch your miles is through Miles & More’s Mileage Bargain awards. The program offers routes with up to 50% savings on economy, premium economy and business class awards. You can fly bargain awards on Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings and LOT Polish Airlines. These tickets are nonrefundable and have strict booking and travel restrictions, but when they match your travel plans, they're a great way to stretch your miles further.

The bottom line

Lufthansa’s Miles & More frequent flyer program offers some great flight redemption options, along with a number of drawbacks. High fees on award flights, complicated search tools and limited ways to earn miles mean this program isn’t for everyone. But if you can earn enough miles by flying or using a Lufthansa-branded credit card, some award flights, especially in business or first class, can deliver great value.

Not too long ago, news on the block was that Lufthansa (finally) took the decision to reboot its Miles & More loyalty program . The changes were so sweeping that it gave its members practically two years notice. It’s actually quite good; the changes made to the program will introduce greater transparency and simplicity in point allocation with a focus on driving long-term loyalty. In short, from 1st January 2022, there will be a few changes to the frequent flyer programme of Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and SWISS.

While there are both benefits and limitations to the new program, these changes only affect the Miles & More awards programme leaving the allocation, earning and use of award miles unaffected. Interestingly, the changes made to Lufthansa’s Miles & More program (Lufthansa Groups flagship airline) now has a striking resemblance to its main European competitor’s loyalty program, IAG’s flagship British Airways Executive Club . Not to mention elements of the program can be seen in other Oneworld carriers such as Cathay Pacific, Qatar Airways and Qantas.

Miles & More may have started as a Lufthansa-specific program, but it is now the primary frequent flyer program of 10 European airlines. Nearly all of which are aligned with Star Alliance. These include: Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, LOT Polish Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Adria Airways, Luxair and Air Dolomiti Staying with Lufthansa, the airline’s current system (pre-2022 for those reading in the future) is, put simply, somewhat a mess. The reboot should simplify and streamline the frequent flyer hierarchy and make it more accessible to more people. Naturally, these themes will develop throughout the article but if you want to go straight to the source the link is provided .

Going from Miles to Points

The biggest fundamental shift to the entire program

THE CURRENT SYSTEM

In the current system, you can earn Status Miles, HON Circle miles, Select Miles, Status Stars Points, Flight Segment status (Silver Promotion anyone) and award miles. All of these, bar award miles, play a role in both the attainment of elite status tiers and additional perks. In many ways, it’s as messy as trying to understand Japan Airlines Frequent Flyer Program .

The new system

Now scrap all that knowledge and focus on points and qualifying points; these will be the only two interconnected metrics moving forward. In many respects, Lufthansa change from a miles-based system to a points-based structure is the biggest fundamental shift to the entire program. Put simply, you now need twice as many general points to qualifying points to achieve elite status with Lufthansa. While every qualifying point earned also counts towards your general points war-chest; qualifying points can only be earned on airlines which use Miles & More as their frequent flyer program.

General Points

A point is in many ways like a status mile, it can be earned on flights with airlines who use Miles & More as their main frequent flyer program as well as on flights with all other Star Alliance members.

In conjunction there are also qualifying points; these points can only be eared flying on airlines who use Miles & More as their main frequent flyer program but not on flights with other Star Alliance members.  No matter how many points you earn, if you do not get the required qualifying points you will never reach the higher elite status tiers.

The Elite Status Tiers

From 2022 the elite status threshold will look something like this, and as you can see, not all status points are equal . With the exception of HON circle membership, you need half of the fights to be on co-issuing Miles & More airlines (as Lufthansa call it).

HON Circle has actually changed for the better; if you one of the ones lucky ones travelling enough to actually achieve it. Where it used to be a 10/10 on the ‘mere-moral unachievable index’, it’s now more of a 9.5/10. Currently, HON Circle status was earned by gaining 600,000 HON Circle miles within two calendar years. That isn’t too bad until you realise, HON Circle miles could only be earned in Business and First Class on flights with co-issuing Miles & More airline partners. Under the new rules, you can still only reach HON circle status by flying on Miles & More partner airlines. Now though flights in Economy and Premium Economy will now count towards HON circle status . This is effectively a drop in the water in the grand scheme of things;l when doing the maths, if you are travelling only Europe in economy you will need to travel 300 sectors in a year to earn HON status.

Introduction of Miles & More mid-tier bonuses

Taking a page straight out of Cathay Pacific’s playbook , Lufthansa now gives mid-tier bonuses as a way to be “proactive in awarding benefits” to its members.

Frequent Traveller Mileage exchange at  200  qualifying points

Senator 2  eVoucher  at  700  qualifying points 15,000 award miles at  1,000  qualifying points Frequent Traveller partner card at  1,300  qualifying points

Earning Elite miles & more Status Points

It’s clear to see, as shown by Lufthansa’s marketing that an overarching tenant was to simplify the program and make calculating points earned a lot easier. at its core, the old system wasn’t too difficult to follow, It was effectively distance flown multiplied by fare class and factor in earning rates when flying on other carriers – its all the extras that confused the majority of people who didn’t actively track their elite status. Websites like wheretocredit helped alleviate some of those issues but not all.

it’s notably simpler under the new system – you still earn a varying amount of points dependent on the carrier and class of travel; gone are the distance calculations and in its place a simple zone-based system takes its place. The zone-based model is not as complex as say Cathay Pacific’s 6 different zones nor do you have to learn rules like British Airways 2,000-mile rule , rather you earn different miles depending on whether you fly within a continent or between two.

In some situations it works out worse for the passenger under the new system , take a flight from New York (JFK) to San Francisco (SFO) – a distance of 2,586 miles – as it’s classed as only being in one continent you would only earn 5 points in economy. Compare that with a trip from Lisbon (LIS) to Casablanca (CMN) – a distance of 383 miles – which will earn you 15 points in economy thanks to the hop from Europe to Africa. What will now benefit leisure travellers is that there will no longer be any differentiatio n between lower-fare tickets and higher-fare tickets in a single class of service , an economy ticket is an economy ticket regardless of the price you’ve paid. Practically speaking, no matter how you cut it, to even have a shot at Senator status you will need to have to taken at least 5 intercontinental business class flights with a Miles & More carrier to even get enough qualifying mile to have a shot – and then there is still the remaining 230 general points to collect. While you’re looking for ways to do point runs, you can forget about trying to do 5th Freedom Flight runs , Shout-out to Fly Pointy End who maintains a list and, as you can see, there are barely any routes where you can earn Qualifying Points on.

Changes to the program

Introduction of a formal lifetime status program.

Lufthansa is now introducing a lifetime membership program to properly reward its long term, loyal members. You can then earn lifetime status by fulfilling the following criteria:

• Frequent Traveller Lifetime : 7,500 qualifying points
• Senator Lifetime : 10,000 qualifying points plus at least 10 full calendar years of Senator or HON Circle membership

Gone are the Status Stars and Status Stars points , which will not be missed. But something says that earning lifetime status with Lufthansa is somewhat easier than other airlines, Finnair for instance, requires you to have at least 33 years to earn enough points to reach lifetime platinum (their top-tier elite status). Better yet, historic loyalty is not wasted and will be converted to the new system and come 1 st Jan 2022 Two Status Stars points will be equivalent to one qualifying point. All frequent flyers with four or five Status Stars will thus be awarded Senator Lifetime at the beginning of 2022. You will receive Frequent Traveller Lifetime if you have already achieved three Status Stars by the end of 2021.

2 Years to 1 year – A devalued status

Another notable change to the programme is how long your status will last. Historically Lufthansa status had been valid for two years, though with the new program it will only be valid for one year. A pretty steep devaluation. However this is in line with other international players in the market – with the exception Royal Jordanian Platinum Hawk and Qatar Airways 2 nd year fallback to a certain degree.

SAY GOODBYE TO JETFRIENDS

JetFriends was the kid-friendly side to Miles&More with its own cards and cartoon characters which will no longer exist moving forward. From 2022, children and young people will need to register as normal via Miles & More, and in this context, will also be able to qualify or requalify for a status. However, with the removal of this program, one of the more unique benefits will go with it. JetFriends had a special perk where kids award miles will not expire until their 18th birthday but now will expire in accordance with standard policies .

Senator Premium Awards (exactly like British Airways ‘double Avios’ rewards for Gold Executive Club members) was a unique feature for Senators to get an award on any flight for a 50% mileage premium which will no longer be available moving forward.

Is miles & more still a good program to be with?

In the grand scheme of things these changes are positive for the airline, the program is simpler and overall easier to collect points with, if not for the devaluation from two years to one. Although the true impact of this will solely depend on your travel patterns and this will correlate directly to whether you come out on top or get left behind.

If you frequently book other Star Alliance airlines (because say you don’t live in Germany but know that Lufthansa offers some decent perks) then you will almost certainly find it harder to gain elite status. On the other hand, if you fly Lufthansa or Eurowings more often-than-not and are price sensitive then you will likely find that this change will work out better for you in the long run.

Lately, Lufthansa asks for pass word. I have my card number and my pin. Still it says it is not enough. Please help me, my husband and I travelled a lot in business class over seas.

Miles and More is Europe’s most extensive frequent flyer program. 

All the Lufthansa Group airlines (Lufthansa, Eurowings, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti, and Edelweiss Air) participate in the program. Better still, the Lufthansa Group is also part of Star Alliance , the biggest airline alliance in the world. 

Star Alliance includes global airlines like Turkish and Singapore, but also North American carriers United and Air Canada. 

Thanks to the global Star Alliance network, you can use your Lufthansa frequent traveler benefits with over 30 airlines – making it easier to redeem your points. 

One of the primary benefits of the Miles and More program is that you can use the miles to fly anywhere. 

Here are some examples of the global possibilities with the Lufthansa frequent traveler program. 

These are some of the flights I booked or upgraded with Lufthansa miles: 

• Copa flight from Santa Cruz, Bolivia to Panama;
• United flight from Atlanta to Miami;
• Singapore Airlines flight from Singapore to Bangkok; and 
• Aegean Flight from Larnaca to Barcelona via Athens. 

In short, Miles and More is a top-notch program because you can use the miles on so many airlines. Even if you aren’t a super-frequent traveler, you’ll find ways to redeem your miles, which isn’t always the case with other loyalty programs. 

The Lufthansa Frequent Traveler Program: How to Earn Lufthansa Miles

Now that we know what the Miles and More program is, it’s time to earn some sweet Lufthansa air miles. 

How to Earn Lufthansa Miles Through the LH Group and Star Alliance Flights

The easiest way to earn Lufthansa miles is by flying with one of the Lufthansa Group airlines or a Star Alliance member. 

It’s simple, but you don’t get a lot of miles if you fly in economy class. For flights within Europe , you get between 100 and 1,500 miles, depending on the booking class. 

For intercontinental flights from or to Europe, the miles you get are calculated by distance. In economy class , you’ll get around one mile per mile flown. In business class, it will be between 1.5 and two times the miles flown.

As an example, if you book an economy flight from Frankfurt to Sao Paulo , you get around 7,000 miles. If you buy that same ticket in business class, you’ll gain over 14,000 miles. 

In short, you’ll quickly get lots of Lufthansa miles if you frequently fly intercontinental or buy business class tickets. 

How to Earn Lufthansa Miles Through Hotels and Car Rentals

You can access the Miles and More hotel and rental car booking platform through the website. 

The prices for hotels are a bit higher than on Booking.com , for example, but you can earn a lot of miles this way. 

In this context, if you book an upper-mid-range hotel for 70-150 USD per night, you often get around 1,000 miles per night.

Consequently, earning Lufthansa miles by using their hotel booking platform is a worthwhile option if you are not a frequent flyer. 

You can also use partner companies like Marriott Bonvoy and Booking.com . On these websites, however, the number of miles you get per euro spent is lower than on the Miles and More platform. 

How to Earn Lufthansa Miles Through Credit Cards

Miles and More has partnerships with credit institutions in over 20 countries. 

In the US, you can get a Miles and More Barclay’s credit card if you meet the qualifications. If you spend 3,000 USD in your first three months, you usually get around 50,000 bonus miles – enough for a transatlantic economy flight. The card has an 89 USD annual fee, making it a better value than many comparable ones. 

There are other credit card solutions, depending on where you live. 

Credits cards are generally a great solution to earn miles, and Lufthansa is no different. However, the Miles and More credit cards only give you one mile per dollar spent. That amount isn’t competitive with some other cards that provide two miles per dollar spent. 

Can You Buy Miles and More Miles?

The Lufthansa frequent traveler program does not currently offer the option to buy miles. 

What Are Lufthansa Status Miles and HON Circle Miles? 

There are three different types of Miles and More points: miles , Lufthansa status miles , and HON Circle miles .

First, the regular miles are the ones you earn on flights, hotels, and other partner companies.

Secondly, you earn Lufthansa status miles through Lufthansa Group and Star Alliance flights. 

Finally, you earn HON Circle miles by purchasing business or first-class tickets on Lufthansa Group and codeshare partner airlines. 

The status miles will determine your status with Miles and More. There are four qualifications:

• Member : no status miles required;
• Frequent Travel : 35,000 status miles or 30 flight segments within a calendar year; 
• Senator : 100,000 status miles within a calendar year; and 
• HON Circle member : 600,000 HON Circle miles within two consecutive calendar years.

Every status level has different benefits like free baggage allowances, business lounge access, more miles, and upgrades. 

The Lufthansa Frequent Traveler Program: Best Ways to Redeem 

Now that we’ve covered the part on how to earn Lufthansa miles, it’s time to get to the fun part: spending them.

How to Redeem Miles and More Points on Flights 

Redeeming miles on flights is undoubtedly the best-valued option with the Lufthansa loyalty program. 

See the chart below for the prices of an award ticket. These awards work for all Lufthansa Group airlines as well as their mileage partners. Be aware that not all Star Alliance members are Lufthansa mileage partners. 

If an airline is a Star Alliance member but not a mileage partner, you can earn but not redeem your miles on that airline. 

You can, for example, earn Lufthansa miles on Turkish Airlines flights, but you cannot buy a Turkish airlines ticket with Lufthansa miles. 

United, on the other hand, is both a mileage partner and a Star Alliance member.

If you are wondering how to use Lufthansa miles on United, the following is the best solution. You can buy an award ticket with United from New York to Austin, for example, and pay with Lufthansa miles on the Lufthansa website. 

Prices for Lufthansa Award Tickets in Miles

The prices depend on the length of the flight and the booking class. The miles you see in the chart are always for return flights. So, you can get can a one-way ticket with half the miles. 

In this context, I recently bought an Aegean Airlines ticket from Cyprus to Barcelona via Athens with 17,000 Lufthansa miles, which is more or less what the chart states. 

How to Get a Lufthansa Upgrade With Miles 

Getting a Miles and More business upgrade is straightforward on some routes and challenging on others. 

As a rule of thumb, it’s easy to upgrade from premium economy to business on a transatlantic flight. Upgrading from economy to business requires a lot of miles that you could easily spend on an award ticket. Some economy tickets aren’t upgradable, especially if it’s a promotional fare. 

Upgrading from business to first class is the best value for your money, but you still need to purchase an expensive business class ticket. 

For a transatlantic flight, you can generally upgrade from premium economy to business class with around 30,000 miles. For Asian flights, the price is closer to 50,000 miles. 

Here’s an example of a Lufthansa upgrade:

• I bought a premium economy ticket from Santa Cruz, Bolivia to Panama City (Copa Airlines – part of Star Alliance) and then to Frankfurt (Eurowings – part of the Lufthansa Group) for around 900 USD. 
• I then upgraded the Panama-Frankfurt flight to business class by paying 30,000 miles. 

The business class ticket from Panama to Frankfurt alone would have cost in the region of 3,000 USD, so the Lufthansa upgrade was a no-brainer. 

Redeem Miles and More Points on Hotels 

You can redeem your miles on the Miles and More hotel booking platform, but I do not recommend that. 

You’ll get a discount on the nightly price of your hotel, but the monetary value is low. As such, redeeming your miles on awards flights and Lufthansa business upgrades will save you a lot more money. 

Other Lufthansa Frequent Traveler Rewards 

You can spend your miles in Lufthansa’s online shop and other travel-related platforms. 

However, much like spending miles on hotels, this isn’t the best-value option. 

All in all, earning miles through hotels and car rentals is a better option than redeeming them in that manner. 

Conclusion on Miles and More: the Lufthansa Frequent Traveler Program

Miles and More is one of the best frequent flyer programs out there. 

If we compare it to the Air France-KLM Flying Blue program , for example, it’s easier to earn and spend miles with Lufthansa thanks to their partnership with Star Alliance.   

Here’s a recap on the best ways to earn and spend Lufthansa miles:

• The easiest way to earn Lufthansa miles is through flying a lot, booking hotels on their platform, and credit cards;
• The best ways to spend Miles and More points are to buy award tickets or upgrade;
• The main limitations of the program concern airlines that are Star Alliance members but not mileage partners like Turkish Airlines (Update 2023: some Turkish Airlines flights can be bought with Lufthansa miles, but not all of them).

To conclude, it’s best to use the Lufthansa loyalty program if you fly a lot in Europe and North America. Those are Lufthansa’s bases, but the group’s partnerships also cover Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. 

The hotel booking platform gives you a lot of miles for your money – creating additional possibilities to earn Lufthansa miles. 

As such, the Lufthansa program shines through versatility – making it one of the most usable airline loyalty schemes.

I recently paid for a Turkish Airlines ticket with lufthansa miles. It may be that at the time in which you wrote the article it was like you say it. The Turkish airlines flight appeared directly at the Lufthansa website when booking with miles.

Lufthansa Frequent Traveller bis Februar 2024 verlängern für unter 150 Euro pro Jahr

Für alle Lufthansa Frequent Traveller steht in diesem Jahr die Statusverlängerung an, denn selbst wer den Status im letzten Jahr wegen der Corona Krise verlängert bekommen hat, der muss dieses Jahr die Requalifikation schaffen, wenn er den Frequent Traveller Status behalten will. Gerade aber da bei den meisten kaum geschäftliche Reisen stattfinden, machen sich viele Vielflieger Sorgen um den Status.

Dabei ist es gerade in diesem Jahr doch erstaunlich einfach den Frequent Traveller Status zu verlängern und man kann dies schon mit einem Hin- und Rückflug sehr kostengünstig und effizient machen. Nachdem man den Status für zwei Jahre verlängert, hätte man nach einer einfachen Verlängerung dieses Jahr gleich bis Februar 2024 den Frequent Traveller Status.

Auch wenn niemand absehen kann, wie sich das eigenen Reiseverhalten wirklich verändern wird nach der Pandemie, können doch die allermeisten sehr zuversichtlich sein, dass man zumindest ab nächstem Jahr wieder einen Teil seiner alten Reiseaktivität zurück erhält und hier ist ein Status sicher nicht schlecht, zumal man ihn dank der aktuellen Aktionen von Miles&More leichter bekommen kann den je.

Wir wollen Euch in diesem Beitrag noch ein Beispiel zeigen, wie einfach es gehen kann, den Frequent Traveller Status zu verlängern und auch wie kostengünstig es gerade in diesem Jahr ist, noch aktiv zu werden, denn für unter 150 Euro pro Jahr, konnte man weder in der Vergangenheit den Status verlängern, noch wird man dies in der Zukunft schaffen.

30.000 Statusmeilen allein mit der Frequent Traveller Kreditkarte für 64,92 Euro

Kernpunkt der einfachen Frequent Traveller Verlängerung ist die Frequent Traveller Kreditkarte, welche mit 5,41 Euro im Monat für Frequent Traveller vergünstigt ist und alle Vorteile der Miles&More Kreditkarte Gold bietet, welche etwa das Doppelte kostet. Zu den dauerhaften Vorteilen gehören Dinge wie Reiseversicherungen, eine Mietwagenvollkaskoversicherung, sowie die Möglichkeit Prämienmeilen für jeden Euro an Ausgaben zu sammeln.

Das Highlight der Frequent Traveller Kreditkarte in 2021 ist allerdings die Möglichkeit neben den üblichen Prämienmeilen für den Umsatz auch Statusmeilen zu sammeln. Hierbei vergibt man sogar gleich zwei Statusmeilen je ein Euro Umsatz. Beachten muss man aber, dass man maximal 30.000 Statusmeilen mit der Frequent Traveller Kreditkarte in 2021 sammeln kann. Eine einmalige Chance!

Hierbei setzen sich die 30.000 Statusmeilen wie folgt zusammen:

• 5.000 Statusmeilen zur Begrüßung, direkt nach Erhalt der Karte
• Bis zu 25.000 Statusmeilen in 2021 mit 12.500 Euro Umsatz (zwei Statusmeilen je ein Euro Umsatz)

Nachdem man 35.000 Statusmeilen zur Verlängerung des Frequent Traveller Status benötigt, schafft die Frequent Traveller Kreditkarte bereits über 85% der Requali und ist damit ein Muss für jeden Frequent Traveller!

Mit einem Business Class Flug zum Frequent Traveller für 229 Euro

Um den Frequent Traveller Status nach dem mit der Kreditkarte gesammelten Statusmeilen noch zu verlängern, benötigt man noch 5.000 Statusmeilen. Allerdings bietet Miles&More in 2021 auch doppelte Statusmeilen auf alle Flüge mit Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti, LOT und Eurowings gut. Damit braucht man eigentlich nicht mehr Flüge mit 5.000 Statusmeilen, sondern nur noch mit 2.500 Statusmeilen und diese lassen sich problemlos und günstig mit Innerdeutschen Flügen in der Business Class sammeln.

Die effizienteste Option ist hier wohl die Eurowings BIZ Class durch Deutschland, welche immer mindestens 1.000 Meilen pro Flug bringt. Hinzu kommt noch der Executive Bonus von 25%, womit man 1.250 Statusmeilen pro Flug, bzw. 2.500 Statusmeilen für einen innerdeutschen Hin- und Rückflug sammelt. Diese Meilen werden dann noch einmal verdoppelt, womit man 5.000 Statusmeilen bereits nach diesem Flug zusammen hat.

Einen Flug für 229 Euro habe ich zwischen Köln und Hamburg als same day Return gefunden. Dieser bringt als Frequent Traveller genau 5.000 Statusmeilen. Möglicherweise gibt es aber noch günstigere Optionen.

Auch wenn der ein oder andere vielleicht schon seinen Frequent Traveller Status abgeschrieben hat, sollte man sich unbedingt die extrem leichte Option vor Augen führen, wie man ihn dieses Jahr für mindestens zwei Jahre, bis Februar 2024, verlängern kann. Gerade da es dieses Jahr einmalig einfach ist, sollte man sich dieses Chance nicht entgehen lassen.

Kernstück des Frequent Traveller Erhaltes oder auch des Aufstiegs zum Senator ist in diesem Jahr aber auch ganz klar die Frequent Traveller Kreditkarte, welche es einmalig einfach macht, den Frequent Traveller Status zu erhalten.

Immer noch nicht klar: man muss also nicht mehr Prämienmeilen gegen Statusmeilen einlösen (die wären dann praktisch dadurch unbrauchbar)?

allein durch den Umsatz von 12500€ bekommt man 25.000 Statusmeilen? Okay schon besser.

für die M&M Black ohne Status bezahle ich bereits jetzt fast identische Jahresgebühr (knapp 5€/Monat), Versicherungen sind IMHO wertlos, aber was solls.

Wie komme ich jetzt für die 150€ pro Jahr mit dem EW Business Class Flug für 229€? Könnt ihr das mal erklären? Click-bate oder wie erklärt man sich das?

Ich habe keine Ahnung, was du mit M&M Kreditkarte Black meinst, die gibt es so nicht, daher ist es schwer dir zu antworten.

Insgesamt investiert man dieses Jahr für den Status weniger als 300 Euro für zwei Jahre Status. Das macht nach Adam Riese unter 150 Euro pro Jahr an Investition für einen FTL.

Sehr interessant. Ich würde gerne die 150€ investieren. Am besten noch auf der Stelle. Nach meiner Rechnung kostet der FTL ganz genau 64,92€ plus 12.500€ für Kreditkarten-Umsätze, die erst einmal generiert werden müssen sowie den fehlen Flug für die 5.000 Meilen, nach eurem Beispiel 229,98€. Wenn ich meinem Taschenrechner glauben kann, dann sind dies insgesamt 12.794,90€ für 2 Jahre FTL. Passt also nicht ganz mit Überschrift Eures Artikels überein.

Es gibt nun wirklich mehr als genug Mittel und Wege, alltägliche Ausgaben inkl. Miete mit der Kreditkarte zu bezahlen. Kauft ja keiner einen Kleinwagen um den FTL zu erreichen…

@U Jetzt wird es aber mehr als obskur! Du tust so, als würde man mit jedem Umsatz über die Kreditkarte Geld wegschmeißen und nicht, null, nada dafür bekommen? Da passt doch etwas nicht in deiner Rechnung.

12.500 Euro Umsatz kann man durchaus generieren, insbesondere wenn man Revolut für Überweisungen nutzt sollte das nur wenige FTL vor größere Hürden stellen.

Wer es sich madig machen will, der rechnet natürlich genau so, egal ob stimmig oder nicht!

Das mit dem Revolut habe ich probiert, funktioniert aber nicht so wie ich mir das vorstellt hatte; nämlich mit der MM Kreditkarte das Revolut-Konto aufladen und dieses dann für Überweisungen zu nutzen. Der Haken daran: Um dein Revolut-Konto von einer MM-Kreditkarte aufzuladen, zahlst du nicht wenig Gebühren…

In these times, the Lufthansa Group wants to offer its most loyal customers security early on. For frequent flyers, it is currently not easy to maintain their status or to qualify the current low number of flights. The Lufthansa Group is now making this much easier with far-reaching, one-time special offers. Status miles and HON Circle miles will be automatically doubled this year, regardless of booking class. In addition, Frequent Travellers and Senators will also be able to earn status miles with the Miles & More Credit Card. All goodwill offers are valid for the entire year 2021.

"We are currently flying by sight and are aware of the difficult situation the Corona pandemic poses for our customers as well. Unfortunately, we cannot predict how travel options will develop this year. That is why we create reliability for our most loyal customers by making it much easier to maintain and achieve the frequent flyer status," says Joost Greve, Head of Loyalty at the Lufthansa Group.

Earn double status miles and HON Circle miles for flights

As a special offer, status miles for Frequent Travellers and Senators will be automatically doubled, regardless of booking class. For the first time, all status members will also earn double HON Circle miles for First and Business Class flights. The credits are completely automatic and apply retroactively to flights made since January 1st, 2021. No registration is required. The promotion is valid on all Lufthansa Group flights operated by Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and Lufthansa Private Jet, SWISS, Eurowings, Brussels Airlines, Air Dolomiti and Edelweiss Air. It also applies to flights operated by the partner airlines Croatia Airlines, Luxair and LOT Polish Airlines on which status miles and HON Circle miles are awarded.

Earning status miles with the Miles & More Credit Card

Frequent Travellers and Senators can now also earn status miles outside of flying: for every euro spent with the Miles & More Credit Card, two status miles are credited and count towards the status extension or upgrade to Senator.

"With this attractive additional offer, we are significantly increasing the value of the Miles & More Credit Card for our most loyal customers and additionally expressing our appreciation for their continued loyalty. By using the card in daily life and the associated opportunity to earn status miles beyond flying this year, we are offering a unique advantage and are absolute innovators in doing so," says Sebastian Riedle, Managing Director of Miles & More GmbH. In addition, every Frequent Traveller or Senator who has a Miles & More Credit Card will be given a one-time credit of 5,000 status miles. The same applies to a successful new application during the promotional period. The accumulated status miles are automatically displayed in the Miles & More mileage account. The maximum value of the promotion is 30,000 status miles in total. The only restriction is that no Select Miles are awarded for status miles earned via the Miles & More Credit Card.

The Lufthansa Group had already made special offers for Miles & More status customers in 2020. At the end of the year, for example, it was announced that HON Circle miles earned in the 2019 calendar year would be credited again and counted toward renewed requalification in 2020 as well as in 2021. Together with Miles & More, Europe's leading frequent flyer and awards programme, the Lufthansa Group is the first company to make its status customers goodwill scheme on this scale.

Here you can find out everything you need to know about carry-on baggage, your free baggage allowance and special baggage on your Lufthansa flights.

International travel

The fare to be paid covers the cost of transporting you from the airport at the actual place of departure to the airport at the actual final destination. It is calculated in accordance with the tariff which is applicable on the day you book your ticket for the flight dates and itinerary shown on your ticket. If you alter your route, this may have an impact on the fare you pay. The fare is recalculated on the basis of the actual route taken and, if applicable, the difference subsequently charged. Your fare does not include ground transport between airports or between airports and city centers.

Taxes, fees and carrier charges

Applicable taxes, fees and carrier charges imposed by the airline, government or other authority, or by the operator of an airport, shall be payable by you. At the time you purchase your ticket, you will be advised of taxes, fees and carrier charges not included in the fare, most of which will normally be shown separately on the ticket.

Reservation Service Fees

Customers who make a reservation through lufthansa.com may cancel their reservation without penalty up to 24 hours after the reservation is made, if the reservation was made seven days or more prior to the flight’s departure. Lufthansa will allow customers to hold a reservation made directly with Lufthansa’s telephone reservation center without payment for up to 24 hours, if the reservation was made seven days or more prior to the flight’s departure. - Online (lufthansa.com) - No fee - Online (lufthansa.com) for flights originating outside the U.S. - 15 EUR fee - Via phone (Lufthansa Call Center) - $20 ticket service fee - At the airport - $20 ticket service fee

Secure Your Fare (Reservation with price-guarantee)

With the Secure your fare option, you can reserve the selected flights at the price specified for up to 48 hours. No ticket will be issued and you will not be charged for the reservation. A cancellation fee of $39.00 will be charged if you cancel your reservation or take no action within the 48 hour time limit. The "Secure your fare" fee is non-refundable.

Free baggage rules on Lufthansa (per bag/ each way)

The permitted free baggage allowance is determined by the service class booked and the status of the passenger and is shown on the ticket/Passenger Receipt. On all Lufthansa-operated flights  the following basic rules apply to free baggage :

1 bag up to 23 kg

2 bags each up to 23 kg

2 bags each up to 32 kg

3 bags each up to 32 kg

Free baggage dimensions:

The maximum size per piece of baggage (width + height + depth), regardless of class, is  62 inches (158 cm) . Items of baggage that are larger or heavier than the permitted dimensions and weight or that are additional to the free baggage allowance will be carried as excess baggage for a flat fee, see more information below.

Excess baggage regulations and flat fees (per bag/ each way)

For all tickets a  maximum travel weight of 32 kg per item of baggage applies , irrespective of service class. Items of baggage which exceed these weights will not be accepted as travel baggage. They can be sent by air cargo at air cargo rates.  For Lufthansa guests fees* apply if their checked baggage meets the allowed pieces but possibly exceeds in weight and/or dimension:

The free baggage allowance for children under two years of age is one piece of baggage weighing up to 23 kg and one folding pushchair. * Please note that in a number of countries a service charge may be incurred, in addition to the flat fee, for checking in excess baggage.

Exceptions to free baggage allowance regulations

For Lufthansa Economy Class passengers, on certain routes or with particular products, there are separate free baggage allowances with regard to the number of baggage items, and in some cases the weight. Special free baggage regulations for Economy Class

Special baggage rules for travel to/from or across the USA

Under a consumer protection law issued by the US Department of Transportation, the following baggage rules apply to flights to/from or across the USA:

• Consistent baggage rules apply to all parts of a journey to/from or across the USA. These include the free baggage allowance, the dimensions and weight of each of your bags, the level of any charges that may be incurred and hand luggage regulations.
• The baggage rules set by the airline which is listed first on the ticket are those that usually apply here. If Lufthansa is listed on the first flight segment of your ticket, then Lufthansa’s baggage regulations will apply to your entire journey* — both your outbound and your return flight.
• However, any airline which is listed as the first carrier on the ticket is at liberty to transfer the baggage rule stipulation to another airline in the itinerary (the so-called ‘Most Significant Carrier’). In such a case that other airline’s rules would then apply to the entire journey.
• Lufthansa therefore cannot guarantee that, for a Lufthansa-issued ticket, the Lufthansa baggage rules will always apply in every case. Other airlines often have baggage rules which differ from those of Lufthansa.

Reservation cancellation and changes fees for travel from the U.S. can range between USD 250-1,000 (per passenger) Change fees are in addition to any difference between the original and new fare.

Seat reservation

Economy Class

The following conditions apply for reserving seats in Economy Class:

• The flight is operated by Lufthansa, Lufthansa Regional (Air Dolomiti, Lufthansa CityLine) or by Lufthansa Express Rail (DB). 
• The flight reservation is confirmed (no waiting list bookings).
• The seat is reserved no later than 48 hours before departure.

The following conditions apply for seat reservations in Economy Class on flights booked* after 21 March 2017:

* For tickets issued before 28 April 2014 seat reservations on intercontinental flights remain free of charge. **The price for a seat with more legroom varies per routing distance. On intercontinental Lufthansa flights to/from North and Central Africa as well as the Middle East, the price is EUR 50,00/USD 65,00. On flights to/from Argentina, Brazil, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Singapore, South Africa as well as Los Angeles, Miami, San Francisco and Vancouver, the price is EUR 90,00/USD 115,00. On all other flights, the price is EUR 70,00/USD 100,00. *** Includes Azerbaijan, Egypt, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia and Turkmenistan.  Please note that a confirmed seat reservation does not give you any legal right to a specific seat, only to a seat in your chosen category, e.g. window or aisle.

Lufthansa FlyNet®

Deutsche Telekom offers you three individual tariffs for using the Internet service. Payment is possible by all major credit cards. It is also possible to pay using PayPal. Miles & More members can also redeem award miles to settle their bill.

• 1 hour: 9.00 euros or 3,500 miles
• 4 hours: 14.00 euros or 4,500 miles
• Full flight (up to 24 hours): 17.00 euros or 5,500 miles

The full flight tariff (up to 24 hours) can be used in any Lufthansa aircraft fitted with FlyNet® while it remains valid. Please be aware that all tariffs are based on the so-called ‘parking meter principle’. This means that your HotSpot pass Sky has a fixed duration which starts when you first log on and which cannot be extended by intermittently logging off the Internet. Alternatively, if you are a customer of Deutsche Telekom or one of its affiliated roaming partners, you can also log on easily and conveniently with your access data, which you will need to request before the start of your journey. Your FlyNet® Internet use will then be charged in line with your service provider’s tariff. Please bear in mind that use on board the aircraft is billed as ‘international roaming’ and is therefore not necessarily included in the flat rate.

With the sole exception of flights over China: the system switches off automatically when the aircraft enters Chinese airspace and switches on again after leaving it.

Sky Phone - telephone on board

With our Sky Phone you can make phone calls during a long-haul flight. The fee for use is USD 9.95/minute. The Sky Phone is located between Business and Economy Class. Its technology was developed especially for phoning from Airbus A340 and Boeing B747 aircraft types. The charges for your calls will be billed comfortably via your credit card.

Oxygen on Lufthansa aircrafts

Wenoll system available on all Lufthansa operated flights and in all classes. Exceptions: not available on Cityline or regional partners. Usage in First Class during take-off and landing is not possible. Charges: Continental flights: EUR 150 per leg. Intercontinental flights: EUR 300 per leg. Miles & More: Taxes, surcharges and service charges

All additional costs such as taxes, fees and carrier charges (e.g. airport taxes, security fees, international surcharges, insurance surcharges, cancellation/rebooking fees, etc…) up to $1,000 associated with the issue or use of an award shall be borne by the member and may be charged to the member’s credit card. Miles & More: Award reservation change/cancel fee

You can redeposit miles from fully unused award tickets within 1 year from the date of issue once the reservation is cancelled. A charge of 50 EUR or 70 CHF/ USD 60 is payable for rebooking or cancelling a flight award. This amount may vary or be waived for certain flight awards. Only the date and time of a booking can be changed. It is not possible to change routes. A flight award once issued is non-transferable. The sale, exchange or offer for auction of award documents is not permitted. Miles from different mileage accounts cannot be transferred or combined. Flight awards can also be given without payment to friends and relatives without your having to accompany them on the flight. Flight awards passed on to third parties must be booked by you in person. The relevant number of miles will be debited from your mileage account.

Unaccompanied minors

The air fare for children up to 12 years of age is determined by the rules of the tariffs which apply. For exact information on prices please contact the Lufthansa Service Center, your local  Lufthansa Airport Ticket Team or your travel agent.

In addition to the air fare, supervision charges apply per flight/segment:

Examples of calculation of the charges

Flight from Vienna via Munich to New York  EUR 60 / USD/CAD 90  (for the flight within Europe) +  EUR 100 / USD/CAD 165  (for the intercontinental flight) =  EUR 160 / USD/CAD 255 . Flight from Delhi via Frankfurt to New York  EUR 100 / USD/CAD 165  (for 1. intercontinental flight) +  EUR 100 / USD/CAD 165  (for 2. intercontinental flight) =  EUR 200 / USD/CAD 330 .

Lap children

Infants who turn two during the journey will require their own seat; a child fare will be charged for the whole journey. On Lufthansa long-haul flights special baby cots are available. Please be aware that the number of seats with cots are limited. We have special bassinets available for you on our entire long-haul fleet: they are perfectly suited to babies under 11 kg in weight and under 67 cm in length. Night flights are especially suitable for journeys with small children because children can then maintain their usual sleep pattern and get some rest.

Charges for transporting animals

Animals are not included in the free baggage allowance; the level of the charge is based on the size of the container or crate (excess baggage):

Guide dogs and other service dogs

Guide dogs for the blind and deaf as well as other service dogs that you depend on are transported free of charge on Lufthansa flights and may also travel inside the cabin. Please remember to notify us of your guide dog ahead of time.

Häufige Fragen zum Thema Last Minute

Unter Last Minute Reisen versteht man generell Urlaube, die Sie kurzfristig nach der Reservierung antreten. Laut dem Deutschen Reiseverband starten solche Reisen maximal 14 Tage nach dem Buchungsdatum. Moscow metro is not just the perfect way of commuting in the city but a wonderful work of art. There are ~200 metro stations in the city, thus making the city very accessible. Understanding the Russian language is not necessary as long as one is able to interpret the basic modus operandi of the metro system. Keeping track of the color codes and the 'number of stations' makes life easy. The metro stations in the central ring have been tastefully decorated. They could have been art exhibitions themselves!

The Moscow Metro is by far one of the most interesting metro systems in the world. Theres history and aesthetic in here that cannot be discovered and felt elsewhere.

It like traveling back in time nice underground. Very nice metro, of course like any big city many people the police is visible so you feel safe the architecture is very nice it was our first time taking the subway but won't be the last great cultural experience.

My favourite way of traveling around Moscow is definitely by Metro! You can avoid frustrating city traffic and enjoy the ride in the most beautiful underground transport int the world. It's fast and reliable. Check out the stations in the city centre, they are like museums. Google some history and even myths or superstitions behind them - you will love the experience. Moreover, you will kill two birds with one stone - getting from A to B reliably plus check out beautiful stations.

Having a Moscow tour using the Metro will add to your tourism experience since the stations has nice design. Visiting the metro in Moscow should be part of the tour.
