Psychology Study Abroad Programs

If you are considering studying psychology abroad, then you likely have an interest in and general understanding of how the human mind works. Why do people do the things they do? Why do they think the things they think? There are many answers to these questions. If you have a strong desire to help people and learn more about human thought processes, then participating in study abroad psychology courses could be a great idea for you. Study abroad offers the unique opportunity to learn more about a subject you enjoy while in a different environment. Psychology exchange programs don’t just allow you to take classes at a university in another country, but they may also provide opportunities to acquire skills and education that may be considered desirable for future careers in the field.

Desirable Skills May Be Obtained Through Psychology Exchange Programs

There is a certain amount of open-mindedness that comes with the study of psychology, and participating in psychology study abroad programs may help to further enhance that openness. You may have the chance to see how psychologists in another country operate and what psychological challenges foreign societies face. If you’re concerned about language requirements, there are a wide variety of programs for different language levels. You may be able to find study abroad opportunities that do not require any foreign language skills. On the other end of the spectrum, if you are looking to immerse yourself in the language or the culture, then studying abroad in a foreign country where they speak a foreign language provides the perfect opportunity to do so.

Studying Psychology Abroad: Types of Programs

There are a wide range of programs for studying psychology abroad no matter where you are in your studies. You may be able to complete current program requirements while participating in a summer internship. Psychology summer abroad programs are ideal if you do not want to sacrifice an entire academic year at home. You may also apply for a program at a university in another country and complete program requirements that way. For students who are looking to complete an internship for their degree, there may be internship opportunities with practices or hospitals. If language proficiency is more of your goal, then there are language immersion programs available as well. For those who wish to see a wide range of countries and learn more about psychology-related careers in those countries, there may even be programs that visit multiple countries in a single term, offering even more exposure to diverse cultures, policies, and ways of thinking.

Graduate Programs May Be Available

If you have finished or are in the final year of an undergraduate psychology program, then it may also possible for you to pursue a Master’s in Psychology abroad. These programs may offer advanced study and even a concentration within the psychology field. Earning a graduate degree abroad may be particularly useful for those who wish to help a specific portion of the population. There are many renowned universities all over the world, and some of the best universities to study psychology are located in the United Kingdom. Thus, graduate study abroad may be a great idea for those who are serious in pursuing a career in psychology.

Financial Aid for Study Abroad

If financing your study abroad experience is of some concern, rest assured that many universities may provide opportunities for financial aid for qualified students. Just as with university programs at home, it is important to research financing options for any program in which you wish to enroll. There may be grants, loans, or other financial aid available, if you qualify. It also may come down to deciding if this unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience is worth the monetary cost. Specific Information about Psychology Study Abroad Credits

Study Abroad is an attractive option that all Psychology majors are invited to consider. The Director of Undergraduate Studies will be glad to discuss its advantages and drawbacks in the context of your overall program in psychology and your future plans.

Here is a video about obtaining study abroad credit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UgJV3-yE2PU

Importantly, unless special permission is given, please be advised that you cannot count more than two study abroad credits towards the 13 required courses in the major. Please bear this in mind when selecting courses and note that courses earning PSYC097 will not count toward your Psychology Major.

For each Psychology course you want approved, check to see if it is pre-approved on the Study Abroad Database. If it is, this item on your "Proposed Course of Study" form will be approved automatically. If it is not, submit it on XCAT, as described below. It is best to obtain this information and the approval of the course before going abroad; however, oftentimes the syllabus is not available until the beginning of the course.

XCAT Overview: Approval Process

The Psychology department can only approve courses that are similar to those offered primarily in our department (in contrast to courses we cross-list in our department). For example, if you want approval for a statistics course, you should contact the Statistics department in Wharton. If you want approval for a course similar to Intro to Brain and Behavior (PSYC 1210), you should contact the Neuroscience program in the College.

No request will be approved unless a syllabus is attached (.doc or .pdf only please) to your XCAT request; do not email this information to the department. A course description is not sufficient. The syllabus should contain a week by week listing of topics and readings, the name of the textbook, the mode of evaluation of your work in the course, and the number of hours that the course meets. If you cannot locate a syllabus for the appropriate semester, I suggest you contact the relevant Psychology Department for a syllabus from another semester that includes this required information. Please add this syllabus to your XCAT request. No XCAT request can be processed without a complete syllabus.

If you are seeking approval for a course that is very similar (in content and difficulty) to a course we offer, then, if approved, the course will be given the same course number as the Penn course. This course credit will satisfy any requirements that the Penn course satisfies, and you will not be able to take the same course at Penn for credit.

Not all courses are approved. At Penn, all psychology courses delve into the principal areas of scientific psychology. This means that all Penn psychology courses, including those representing "applied psychology," take into account the particular methods of inquiry from which our knowledge is derived and the conceptual frameworks that organize the factual basis of the discipline. If you are seeking approval for a course that does not clearly have, at its core, a scientific foundation, it may not be approved. In these cases, you may be directed to seek credit from other Departments (e.g., HSOC).

Specific credits:  PSYC291, PSYC293, PSYC294

If you are seeking approval for a course we do not offer at Penn, but one that is similar in scope and difficulty to our 1000- or 2000-level lecture courses, then, if approved, the course will be given one of the following numbers: PSYC291 for courses that are most similar to those in our "Biological" division; PSYC293 for those that are most similar to those in our "Cognitive" division; PSYC294 for those that are most similar to those in our "Social" division.  This course credit cannot be used towards any College sector requirements, but for Psych majors, this credit can be used for one of the distribution requirements at the 200-level lecture courses (or as an elective).

If you are seeking approval for a course we do not offer at Penn, and one that is of narrower breadth than our 100- and 200-level courses (i.e., a specialized topic or a seminar), then, if approved, the course may be given the number PSYC298 (for study abroad). This course credit will only satisfy elective requirements (in the College or the Psychology Major). This does not fulfill any of the specific core requirements in the major.

PSYC097 is the course number we assign study-abroad courses when our department does not offer an equivalent course. You can use this credit as an elective in the College, however, this credit does not count towards the requirements of the psychology major.

In some cases, you may want to consult with Wharton to see if they will offer you credit instead of PSYC. However, please note that Wharton only grants credit to courses from Wharton-approved study abroad programs. Wharton’s approved study abroad programs are not identical to the College’s approved study abroad programs.

Information for when you are abroad

Study Abroad

Study abroad will open your mind and change your life. It will also prepare you for the global professional environment of the 21st century.

You can fit education abroad into your undergraduate experience in many ways-by taking electives for general education requirements, or by taking a mix of major courses and electives. It is important to start early to develop a strategy to integrate study abroad into your academic program.  Even if you do not start early enough, it does not mean you cannot take the opportunity to study abroad.  You will just need to be prepared for courses to be above and beyond your degree requirements.

Table of Contents

How can you strategize most effectively.

Start early in your Penn State career, and use the following resources:

  • The Education Abroad website describes the wide variety of programs, options, and financial aid available. Explore the grade requirements and application process, and note the deadlines of December 1 for fall programs, and April 1 for spring and full-year plans. The site also has information on the different types of programs Penn State offers: some are for independent-minded students ready to enroll directly in overseas universities; others provide curricula tailored to American students; and some have language or other course prerequisites. Programs vary in cost, and Penn State administers some offerings itself and runs others through partner institutions.
  • Peer advisers , students who participated in an international education experience, are available for consultation on a drop-in basis 10:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. , Monday-Friday, in 412 Boucke Building. They can tell you about the study abroad experience as well as the program selection and application process. You should visit a peer adviser before making an appointment with an Educational Abroad Adviser.
  • Education Abroad Advisers. It is important to work in partnership with an Education Abroad Adviser who works with the programs in the country you are interested in going to. After discussing where you want to go with a peer adviser, make an appointment with an Education Abroad Adviser (a professional adviser in the international office), to ask questions concerning your choice of program, the application process, and coordination requirements with academic advisers. Appointments may be made through Starfish or you can stop by the reception desk on 4 th floor Boucke (814-865-7681).  For general inquiries please email [email protected] .
  • Liberal Arts Liaison to Education Abroad.  Students who have narrowed down their choice of programs, but are unsure of which is best for them can meet with Chelsea Keen, [email protected] .  As the liaison, she can help discuss student choices and what they hope to get out of the abroad experience to help in coming to a decision.  She is adept in understanding the education abroad programs and is enthusiastic about helping students prepare to go abroad.
  • Academic advisers. It is also necessary to work in close partnership with your departmental and college advisers to review courses you plan to take while abroad to see what may fulfill course requirements you have to complete.  Please note that some courses may remain in your electives. The advisers can respond to your questions about the academic accreditation of courses you plan to take overseas. We recommend you stay in close touch with: 1) the Department of Psychology website: https://psych.la.psu.edu/ as well as 2) the College of the Liberal Arts academic advising website .

These are the key steps in making education abroad work for you. You will be surprised at how many options you have, how you can use your financial aid to study abroad, and how you can integrate education abroad into your curriculum and still graduate on time- if you start early to develop your strategy . Most students in education abroad are juniors and seniors; however, it is encouraged to not count on fulfilling major requirements while abroad. Your goal in studying abroad is to open your mind to the world while sharpening your professional qualifications.  Studying abroad is an opportunity that not all students receive the opportunity to participate in.  It is an experience that will stand out on your resume when applying for graduate schools and jobs as it will lend hand in you developing more self-reliance, self-confidence, and independence.

Where to Study Abroad

Below is a sampling of options suitable for students in Psychology . This list, which does not include all the programs open to you, gives you an idea of the kinds of programs available to you through the Penn State Education Abroad office.  You will find that a large majority of the programs will work for you especially if you are looking to fulfill electives, general education requirements, supporting coursework, and Bachelor of Arts requirements.  Please note that not every program is offered throughout the year as summer has a limited selection of programs to attend.

How to Make Education Abroad count toward your major: a sampler of course accreditations

A key to a successful study abroad strategy is to integrate your international courses as seamlessly as possible into your Penn State curriculum and on to your transcript. Below you’ll find a sampling of international courses in psychology which students have substituted for Penn State credit and grades.

Keep in mind that many education abroad courses will not be accredited as specific Penn State courses, but as PSYCH 299 or PSYCH 499, generic course numbers for “foreign studies in psychology.” Departmental advisers in psychology can help determine how these courses can be counted for the major. Another thing to keep in mind is that students who want to accredit an international course, which has not previously been accredited, are responsible for submitting a syllabus or course outline to the Education Abroad office with the cover sheet they provide. The Abroad office will review and send to the appropriate department for review.

psychology travel abroad programs

Program and Location:

Fall, Tilburg University ; Tilburg, Netherlands

Major/Minor:

Psychology Major, Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Minor

Why did you choose to study abroad?

I wanted to build more independence and confidence, learn about other cultures, make friends from different backgrounds, take unique courses, gain new experiences, and travel.

What did you learn about yourself?

I learned that I am more adaptable and independent than I originally thought.

psychology travel abroad programs

What was one of your favorite parts of your program?

I loved that Tilburg University specializes in behavioral sciences and offered such a variety of interesting psychology courses! It is also an international university and I met so many kind amazing people from all over the world! I also loved that you can ride your bike anywhere and everywhere in the Netherlands.

What advice do you have to future study abroad students?

Try to go during the Spring semester so you can stay a little longer to travel in the summer after finals are over! Juggling classes, making friends, and practicing self-care while trying to travel can be overwhelming even though it is possible.

How did your study abroad experience prepare you for your future career?

My study abroad experience helped me get into grad school! Tilburg University’s specialized courses allowed me to gain consulting and research experience, which I wrote about extensively in my graduate school application essays.

psychology travel abroad programs

Were you surprised by anything during your time abroad?

Yes, I was surprised that they do not refrigerate eggs in the Netherlands!

How were your classes abroad different than if you would have taken them at NC State? Did you take any field trips or do anything outside of the traditional classroom?

The classes were extremely different than NC State. There is far less homework, but because there is such little homework, roughly 75-100% of your grade is determined by the final exam depending on the class. In addition, most classes do not follow a uniform schedule or take place in a single location. You have to log into an online portal called My Timetable on regular basis to see when your classes are and where they are located.

Would you do it again?

I would study abroad again. It is an invaluable period particularly while being in college.

School is out, fellowships are in: seven USC students earn summer opportunities in the U.S., abroad

Large group of national fellowship winners with USC faculty, staff and President Amiridis holding up a sign that says, "Gamecock Excellence."

“What are you doing this summer?” Seven Gamecocks have intriguing answers to that question. By earning national fellowships, Danny Burnett, Diana Clark, Meagan Dean, Keren Karmiel, Ria Kothari, Mariana Orihuela and Kaylen Pritchard have set themselves up for an exciting summer of beyond-the-classroom activities.

Why it matters

Summer is an ideal time for students to engage in hands-on experiences that they might not be able to pursue during the academic year. These opportunities allow students to engage with experts in their fields, explore new areas of research, study abroad or gain practical insight into their future careers. National fellowships can provide funding and impactful experiences, connecting students from around the country and the world.

Who they are

Two students will spend the summer conducting research through the NIH Summer Internship Program in Bethesda, Maryland.

Danny Burnett

NIH Summer Internship Program

Danny Burnett is a junior McNair Scholar and Honors student majoring in public health. He will work at the NIH Clinical Cancer Center at the Center for Immuno-Oncology. His summer research will focus on characterizing how a patient’s immune system responds to novel immunotherapy treatments. After graduation, Burnett will continue his cancer research as he completes an M.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. program.

Ria Kothari

First-year McNair Scholar and Honors student Ria Kothari is studying biochemistry and molecular biology. At USC, Kothari conducts on-campus research in Dr. Jie Li’s biochemistry lab. She will continue researching this summer at the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences. Kothari’s project will focus on a specific type of pediatric bone cancer, Ewing sarcoma, and she will present her research at the culmination of the program. She plans to attend an M.D.-Ph.D. program and continue researching as a physician scientist.

Diana Clark

Fulbright Canada Mitacs Globalink

Diana Clark is a junior McNair Scholar and Honors student majoring in biological sciences. She earned the Fulbright Canada Mitacs Globalink scholarship to spend the summer conducting research in Ottowa, Canada. This opportunity will build on her previous research at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, which focused on bone marrow transplants. Clark aspires to be a pediatric sub-specialist, dividing her time between research and clinical duties.

Meagan Dean

American Enterprise Institute Summer Honors Program

Political science major and Honors junior Meagan Dean will attend the American Enterprise Institute Summer Honors Program in Washington, D.C. Dean interned with the AEI think tank this spring while participating in the Washington Semester Program . As part of the Summer Honors Program, she will engage with a week-long program focusing on workforce development and policy. Dean can draw upon the knowledge she gains from this program as she pursues a legal career.

Keren Karmiel

Hertog Foundation Summer Fellowship

Keren Karmiel is a junior political science major who will travel to Washington, D.C., to attend the Hertog Foundation Summer Fellowship . She is currently an intern in the South Carolina governor’s office and will be interning for Senator Tim Scott this summer. Karmiel will continue her political engagement by participating in Hertog’s peace and conflict resolution program. She will learn from foreign policy experts, and she looks forward to connecting with peers in her field. After graduation, Karmiel plans to continue pursuing her passion for political science and begin a career in public service and diplomacy.

Mariana Orihuela

Amgen Scholars Summer Research Program

Junior Honors student Mariana Orihuela is majoring in psychology. She attended the Amgen Scholars Summer Research Program last year, and she has been selected for the CDC John R. Lewis Undergraduate Public Health Scholars Program for this summer. As part of the MCHC/RISE-UP program, Orihuela will take classes, gain the skills needed to serve children and families from disadvantaged backgrounds and connect with leading public health officials at the Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Through a career in public service, she aspires to advocate for maternal and child health initiatives in underrepresented communities.

Kaylen Pritchard

Fulbright U.K. Summer Institute

Kaylen Pritchard is an Honors sophomore majoring in English. She also serves as the editor-in-chief of Garnet & Black magazine. As a recipient of Fulbright U.K. Summer Institute fellowship, Pritchard will spend three weeks at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. During that time, she will study topics ranging from Renaissance Scotland to Scottish soldier identity and will also visit notable landmarks around the country. This international, interdisciplinary experience will fuel her aspirations to be a professional writer.
