Exploring the Rocky Mountains with the Casio Pro Trek PRG-330
By Jeffrey Donenfeld
Pro Trek – Casio’s outdoor focused, rugged instrument timepieces seem to be making a comeback, improving features. looks, and toughness for this original player in feature filled outdoors watches. The PRG-330 is one of Casio’s newest Pro Trek Models, and features a triple sensor , coupled with solar charging and a large-number easily readable display.
I spent the last week wearing the PRG-330, including both knocking around town as well as camping in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. My general impression is that the PRG-330 is a tough, more minimally styled outdoors watch that could be the perfect blend of features and longevity, possibly at the cost of a bit of style. The typically more energy hungry “ABC” functionality is perfectly paired with “tough solar” charging, and the big numbers are a pleasure to glance at.
Stay one step ahead of Mother Nature with the Solar Powered PRG300, incorporating Casio’s new Triple Sensor Version 3 engine. Advanced CASIO original technology has allowed for a 95% smaller direction sensor and 90% reduction in sensor power consumption compared to previous models. Despite their smaller size, the new sensors in this model delivers better accuracy and energy efficiency. This model can measure Altitude in 1m increments (previously 5m) and display compass readings with 60-seconds of continuous. Aluminum Panel Bezel. Design features include a compact, sleek case and soft urethane band for a better fit to the wrist. One-touch access to digital compass, barometric pressure/altitude, and temperature readings keep important information at your fingertips. Everything about these models is designed and engineered to make them essential pieces of outdoor gear.
First Impressions
For an outdoors-centric watch at a decent price, I was impressed with the presentation, fit, and finish – although this is not uncommon for Casio. The watch comes in a small wood-like box, and is presented nicely. When I opened the box, the watch face was blank, but as soon as I gave it some light and movement, it turned on, with the battery indicator reading “M”. The watch is not huge, and actually feels nice on the wrist. On the underside of the piece, in the space where the band interfaces with the watch case, there are nice rubber pads there, making the entire contact surface with my wrist soft and smooth. Additiaonlly, I was glad to see big, bright numbers on the face – very easy to read at a glance.
The big dissapointment with initial impressions is that the backlight is a white LED illuminating from one side of the face. It’s perfectly readable, but a LOT of light spills out the front, it’s very bright, and has a less classy quality than glowing backlights. Out of all features, this glaring white backlight to me is the largest fault of the watch.
On the Wrist
On the wrist, the PRG330 feels good. Pads under the band make it nice and smooth. The size is large enough to be substantial and legible, but not too big on my medium sized wrists. I love the large numbers, and relatively clear display.
I did a good amount of hiking and climbing with the watch, and grew to love the big numbers, big easy to push buttons, and solar power. The compass, altimeter, and barometer are nice features to have – but in practice, I never actually used them except to play around with. Out of all of the sensors, the barometer graph was the most useful, letting me see when the barometer was falling and a storm coming in. I’d love to see Casio’s Multiband-6 technology for atomic timekeeping.
Feature Review
- LED backlight – The “super illuminator” white LED glares too bright for me, and lights up from one side. I’d prefer a glowing one.
- Solar powered – Love this feature – I never have to change the battery or worry about the battery dying in the field.
- Digital compass – Yep, it works. But why are there direction markings on the bezel, without being rotatable? This is confusing.
- Altimeter – Once again, it works – and there’s a memory feature to save altitudes.
- Barometer – I love seeing a barometer graph for assessing weather patterns
- Thermometer – Shows up on the Barometer screen
- World time: 31 time zones (48 cities + coordinated universal time)
- 1/10-second stopwatch
- Battery level indicator – Key for a solar watch, and making sure i have power in the field.
- Power Saving (display goes blank to save power when the watch is left in the dark)
- Full auto-calendar (to year 2099)
- Accuracy: ±15 seconds per month – I’d love to have the MultiBand6 feature too.
- Switch out the white LED backlight for a green glowing backlight. Those white leds shining from one side glare, and are disruptively bright at night. A dimmer would also be great.
- Why the direction markers on the bezel? If you can’t turn the bezel to lock in a direction, or save a direction, then get ride of that bezel.
- It’s nitpicky, but the ProTrek brand name and logo in general -I hate it. The logo font seems like it’s trying hard to look “outdoorsy”. I’d love a new more modern font to really take these timepieces seriously.
Should You Buy It?
Looking for a well features, sure-to-be-durable outdoors watch that just simply works? Then this could be a great choice. But if you’re looking for a truly refined field instrument, or something to model for instagram photos in, then you might want to keep looking.
Final Thoughts
Casio ProTrek PRG330 is a well-featured ABC outdoor watch, with an easily readable display, solar powered dependability, and comfy wearing,. Except for the glare of the backlight, omission of radio controlled time setting, it’s a great piece for the price.
- Brand & Model: Casio Pro Trek PRG-330
- Price: USD$200
- Who we think it might be for: Outdoors people looking for a reliable wrist instrument.
- If I could make one design suggestion, it would be: Fix the backlight to be a glowing type instead of side LED type.
- What spoke to me the most about this watch: Big numbers and solar charging.
- Case and Bezel material: Resin – Aluminum
- Band material: Resin
- LED backlight (Super Illuminator)
- Solar powered
- Digital compass
- Thermometer
- Battery level indicator
- Accuracy: ±15 seconds per month (with no signal calibration)

Casio ProTrek PRG330 Outdoor Watch Review
Then again, all the functionality in the world won’t amount to a hill of beans if it’s not comfortable to wear and easy to use. Fortunately, the Casio ProTrek PRG330 is quite comfortable. This is in no small part due to the lighter weight of the watch (56g), its overall compact dimensions (47mm sensor to pusher; 12.5mm thick; 52.3mm lug to lug), and the strap. Now, resin straps may not get much love or attention, but when it comes to an outdoors watch, they make sense. They’re light, they’re strong, and they don’t pick up lint and dirt like a silicone or rubber strap might. Casio has also included something that I’ve been seeing on more of their watches as of late – small, curved pieces that are under the strap at the lugs. This helps first to curve the strap a bit. Secondly, it fills in the gap you might otherwise have between your wrist and the case, making for an overall better fit. So, when it comes to comfort, the Casio ProTrek PRG330 has that down.
What about usability? Sometimes, when a digital watch shoves a ton of functionality in, it can be fairly complex to remember how to use all of it. No such problems with the Casio ProTrek PRG330. For most of the major functionality, you’ve got the icons labeling the buttons, which I noted a bit earlier. In regular timekeeping mode, you can use the ‘Adjust’ pusher to cycle the top display between a barometric line chart and two different day/date displays. Using the mode button jumps you through sunset/sunrise times, max barometric pressure, a stopwatch, countdown timer, alarm, and world time. Clean and easy. Even adjusting the auto-on capability of the backlight (i.e. whether it does it or not) is easy enough – press and hold the backlight button. A small ‘LT’ will appear in the lower display when auto-on is enabled, and go away when it’s not. It’s a shame the backlight is made of LEDs rather than an EL subsurface, but it still gets the job done.
With the auto-on, the Casio ProTrek PRG330 exhibits some further smarts as well. Basically, if it’s bright out (be it the sun or lighting in the room you’re in) it knows to not turn itself on. This sort of wizardry makes sense, given that the Casio ProTrek PRG330 is solar-powered. As the watch goes, it wants to maximize the battery, so it’s smart about it, such as with the backlight, or with turning the display off, as I mentioned earlier. I’m definitely a fan of solar powered watches, and including it in something so outdoors-oriented makes sense.
Some may wonder why there is no sort of fitness tracking included on the Casio ProTrek PRG330, given that you’ll be active with it outside. I’ve no mole in the Casio skunkworks, but I’ve got my theories. First up, it’s powering it all with solar power and you’re trying to conserve your battery. Adding in a fitness tracker and attendant Bluetooth radio is going to suck power (not to mention if you tried adding in a HR sensor). More importantly, though, would be size considerations. There is already a lot of technology coming in via the Triple Sensor movement in the watch. You start adding in another sensor and radio, and you need a bigger watch. Perhaps a larger ProTrek could handle it, but remember – the Casio ProTrek PRG330 is intended to be a more compact member of that family.
Coming in with a price of just $200 USD , I think the Casio ProTrek PRG330 is a solid addition to their lineup, and a great candidate for your next outdoor adventure. I took it with me on a camping trip, and found it worked for all manner of activities – even watching the barometer drop as a rain storm was coming in. Some may prefer the larger, bolder cases of the ProTreks that came before, but I think I’ve quickly become a fan of this newest, smallest member of the ProTrek family. protrek.casio.com

In one imgae, Kyva's lifeless body can be seen in the snow surrounded by bloodstains. The location where “deserved punishment awaited the traitor” is near the place that Kyva filmed many anti-Ukrainian videos, sources say.
Kyva was a high-priority target, SBU said. His daily routines, movements, and habits were extensively studied in the operation. Despite strong security, the SBU managed to eliminate him just outside Moscow.
“This [Kyva’s elimination] serves as a signal to all traitors and military criminals who have sided with the enemy. Remember: Russia will not protect you. Death is the only prospect awaiting enemies of Ukraine,” SBU Chief Vasyl Malyuk said.
Ukraine’s SBU eliminated Kyva in a special operation in Moscow Oblast on Dec. 6, said NV sources in the intelligence service.
Kyva's “bloodied body”, discovered with a shot through the head, was found in the park of an elite club hotel in the Moscow region on Dec.6, Russian propaganda Telegram channels reported.

Kyva was shot with an unidentified firearm and died from the injuries on the scene, the Russian Investigative Committee claimed.
Kyva had fled to Spain ahead of Russia’s full-scale invasion. He then appeared in Russian propaganda broadcasts in Moscow, actively spreading lies about Ukraine. Kyva also sought “political asylum” and citizenship from the enemy aggressor.
The Ukrainian parliament stripped Kyva of his MP status in March 2022, charging him with treason. He was additionally charged with publicly calling for a violent change in the constitutional order and propaganda on behalf of the aggressor state in Aug. 2023.

Biomass plastics used for most parts: A digital model with a duplex LCD
We’ve added a duplex LCD to our digital model with direct function buttons for one-push measurements. The rotating bezel, case, case back, and urethane band are made with plant-derived, renewable biomass plastics. Introducing this PRO TREK and celebrating its trailblazing progress in every direction: easy to use, easy to read, easy on the environment.
PROMOTION MOVIE
01 Digital compass now even more readable with the duplex LCD
The dual-layer LCD allows compass graphics to be shown on the top layer, while the bottom layer offers a large display of the time and various measurements. We’ve also made the LCD slimmer to minimize bulk, even with the dual-layer construction.
02 Earth-friendly craftsmanship with biomass plastics
The case, case back, and soft urethane band are all made with the Earth-friendly green material known as biomass plastics. Using renewable organic resources such as castor oil plants and corn helps reduce the ecological footprint. Eco-consciousness rendered in physical form, a fitting material for a real outdoor tool. *Biomass plastics are not used in the metal band of the PRG-340T.
03 Direct function buttons for increased operability
Measure direction, air pressure and temperature, and altitude, each one available directly from a single button. The oversized buttons feature a nonslip finish for effortless use even when wearing gloves. In addition, improved sensor placement makes the side of the case even slimmer. The buttons are easier to press now, too.
Rotating bezel and movable lug construction
The bezel incorporates a rotating mechanism, allowing it to be used for simple orientation memory. The movable lug structure enables the watch case and band to be laid flat — handy when working with paper maps, checking where you are and where you’re going.
Triple Sensor (digital compass, barometer/altimeter, and thermometer) senses natural changes
