Subscriber only, secret gardens tour draws hundreds of gardening enthusiasts.

Presented by Soroptimist International of Saratoga County, the tour featured 11 gardens cultivated and maintained by various local gardeners.

“Soroptimist is a public service organization, and this local club has been around for more than 40 years and is a part of an international group whose mission is to improve the lives of women, girls, and their communities,” Chair of Soroptimist Saratoga Barbara Lombardo said.

Each year, all of the proceeds from the tour go to benefit programs supporting women, including the Live Your Dream, Dream IT BE IT, and Project Hope and Power, the keynote program of the club that was founded in partnership with Wellspring to help give domestic violence victims the skills needed to obtain financial and legal independence.

To bring this tour to life, Lombardo and other members of the Soroptimist Saratoga committee begin preparing up to several years in advance.

“Some of the gardens that are on the tour this year, we have been looking at for two or three years. We’re always looking, and we’ve already been looking for and lining up gardens for next July,” Lombardo said. “There’s work all during the winter; finding the hostesses, doing the publicity, and figuring out how to do the online ticket sales.

“There’s always something going on, so for the one-day event, there’s a lot of work that goes into it.”

For Lombardo, finding new gardens is both a time-consuming and extremely rewarding process. While sometimes gardens are found via word of mouth, oftentimes Lombardo and the other committee members have to search them out.

“We literally do cold calls and say who we are and that we have tickets from the prior year to show. A lot of times, the people are familiar with the organization or the tour; sometimes they’ve never heard of it, so we explain what it’s all about and what’s involved,” Lombardo said.

“That is one of my favorite things; meeting with the individual garden owners and seeing what they’re doing and them expressing their willingness to open their homes for the good cause.”

One of those garden owners, Maureen Nest, who along with her husband Fred, was thrilled to be a part of this year’s garden tour. For the past 11 years, the Nests have been growing and expanding their garden located on a small city lot on Ash Street in Saratoga Springs.

“I’m not a big believer in lawns, so I designated all this space to shrubs, plants, perennials, and vegetables,” Maureen Nest said. “In this particular one, I intermingle. Before, I had a lot of the poppies, and now I have pepper plants. I kind of transition things as things die off. This is primarily my vegetable garden, so it’s a raised bed, and it’s all organic.”

According to Nest, the gardening process begins in the spring, which is when most of the “dirty” work takes place.

“Then, after a while, you have a couple of weeks where you don’t have to do much of anything,” she said. “It doesn’t seem to be a lot of work because I enjoy it, and as long as I can get a shower at the end of the day, I’m good.”

When asked what her favorite thing to plant is, Nest said, “Probably tomatoes, I make sauce so we do a lot of canning and pickling. This year, we had a great harvest of garlic. We started that in the fall. That’s the other thing, you just keep on evolving which is really fun, between drying things out and then fermenting is a big thing now, so you don’t have to necessarily pickle it.”

While starting a garden may seem like a lot of work, its long-term benefits can certainly outweigh any cons.

“Definitely border your main area and put shrubs in because you’re never going to get the right amount of perennials, and you just want to keep on trying to get a change of color,” Nest said when asked if she had any tips for new gardeners. “Each season has about a week difference. So, you’ll have spring, and you’ll have a bunch of different things that come through transitioning.

“Then, you’ll go into presummer, and you just want to get constant color and then you’ll have less weeds and work.”

A sweet addition to racing mornings: Sugar Plum Farm joins Saratoga tour lineup

by WRGB STAFF

A sweet addition to racing mornings: Sugar Plum Farm joins Saratoga tour lineup (WRGB){p}{br}{/p}

If you have always wanted to check out the Saratoga breakfast and breeding farm tours but waited too long or couldn't fit your schedule into 'their' schedule, you’ll be happy to learn

NYRA has added another farm, sugar plum farm in Saratoga to the lineup.

Sugar Plum joins Old Tavern Farm in Stillwater and Song Hill Thoroughbreds in Mechanicville that are welcoming visitors.

You can hit the trail Wednesday through most Saturdays and even some occasional Sundays starting tomorrow.

And it's more than just a horse farm tour. It includes a buffet style breakfast at the Saratoga Race Course bright and early to watch the horses work out, and then a trolley ride to the breeding farm where you'll get a 60 minute guided tour with the farm's owners and staff to learn what life is like for those involved in the sport away from the racecourse.

Walt Borisenok from the Old Tavern Farm tells CBS 6, “...what this does it kinda gives them the background on where these racehorses start and where they come from and what their life cycle is when they're born and then when they get to the track.”

And once you feel you know the horses, the immersive experience gets you back to the track in time for a day of racing!

Tickets are 95 dollars for adults and $35 for children and available on a first-come first served basis at nyra.com

SPAC: Tyler Childers does it all in denim for sold-out Saratoga crowd

J ul. 4—SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — It was a moonshine-induced performance, involving a rubber chicken, an old-timey television set, a denim-clad outfit, and a whole lot of string instruments. Tyler Childers rocked out in front of a sold-out crowd at Saratoga Performing Arts Center on Wednesday night, and he did it his way.

As part of the "Mule Pull '24 Tour," Childers played a 23-song set, running just over two hours on the Broadview stage, showing off his vocal versatility and tapping into his musical roots.

The Kentucky native has carved out his own space in the country music world, combining folk and bluegrass with psychedelics and gospel. Childers put that on display early, opening the concert with his unreleased, slow-paced track "Her and the Banks," before following it up with his honky-tonk style "Percheron Mules."

Childers kept up the theme of toe-tappin' country with his hit song, "Country Squire," but eventually reigned in the feeling with the love song, "All Your'n."

The 33-year-old gave listeners a peek into his inspirations on Wednesday night, performing covers of both Kris Kristofferson's "Help Me Make It Through the Night" and Hank Williams Sr.'s "Old Country Church."

While supporting musicians James Barker (keyboard/pedal steel guitar), Craig Burletic (cello/bass guitar), CJ Cain (guitar) and Rodney Elkins (drums) certainly played their part in getting the concert venue 'screamin' and a shoutin',' Childers took on a solo stretch of the act, giving the feeling that he was sitting on the porch, singing only to and for the listener.

"Lady May," another love song coming from the standpoint of sorrow and remorse, opened Childers' acoustic solos, followed by his darkly motivational, 'Nose on the Grindstone.' Before bringing all his compatriots back on stage, Childers ended the stretch with "Follow you to Virgie" — a song honoring his friend Cody's late grandmother, who used to let Childers and his friends go to her house, play their music, and just hang out.

Childers roared into the home stretch of his concert, performing his anthem for a life hard-lived, "Whitehouse Road," as well as the hymnal, "Way of the Triune God," for which opening act S.G. Goodman returned to the stage to sing along with.

True to his word, Childers set SPAC ablaze with his penultimate song, "House Fire," which was backed by visuals of raging flames, along with a banjo performance that just wouldn't quit.

Childers, speaking directly to the audience, said there would be no encore act, "unlike some of those other guys that will leave and then come back out and play some more."

"After this, we're gonna be done and go (expletive) off to somewhere else," he said to the erupting laughter of 26,000 fans. But before that, he closed with "Universal Sound" — a feel-good track about the benefits of just slowing down to listen to the music, in whatever form it takes.

Childers used an old-fashioned television set on stage, portraying grainy clips and footage of monumental points from the musician's life. But at one point, to begin the concert, just one word was visible on its screen: 'fellowship.'

"Some of you are going to leave here tonight and will have made friends for a lifetime," Childers said to the audience. With a performance like that, Childers made a friend in Saratoga Springs.
