Do I Need A Visa For The UAE?

All foreign nationals, except GCC nationals, need a visa to enter Dubai. A Dubai tourist visa is for foreign nationals who are not eligible for a visa on arrival for Dubai or visa-free entry to the United Arab Emirates.

Some Important Information Before Applying

A female under 18 years who wishes to apply for a tourist visa can only do so if she is traveling with her parents.

Another rule passed in July 2018 says if you're under 18 years old and you're with adults, you can get a free visa to visit Dubai between 15 July and 15 September each year.

Also, remember it is a short-term visa, meaning the visa is only valid for a short period. If you stay longer than the date of issue (your visa's expiry date), you will get a fine.

I recommend contacting your nearest UAE Embassy if you're unsure about the visa.

Dubai Tourist Visa Requirements For All Nationals

Knowing the requirements for each nationality is crucial to avoid any complications when arriving in Dubai. So, let's look at some essential information on Dubai visa requirements.

What Are The Dubai Visa Requirements For US Citizens?

American citizens who are valid passport holders don't need to get a visa beforehand to visit Dubai. They can get a visa on arrival at the airport if they meet the requirements.

The Dubai visit visa requirements for US citizens are as follows:

However, if you stay longer, you have to contact the immigration officer at the airport or the local immigration office in the UAE.

What Are The Dubai Tourist Visa Requirements For Non-US Citizens?

Nationals from the below-mentioned counties only need a valid passport with 6 months validity from the expected date of travel to the UAE and a return flight ticket.

The immigration authorities will grant your visa to Dubai when you arrive at UAE airports, depending on your nationality.

What Are The Visa Requirements For GCC Nationals?

The citizens of GCC countries (the Gulf Cooperation Council), which includes Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia, do not require a visa to visit the UAE.

Apply For Dubai Tourist Visa Through Airlines

You can apply for your tourist visa through airlines such as:

Etihad Airways

Simply visit the website and click on "Apply for UAE visa." This will redirect you to another website where you need to choose the type of visa you want to apply for. Then, fill out the application form, attach the required documents, and pay the application fees.

Emirates Airline

This service is only available to passengers with a confirmed Emirates booking where an Emirates ticket has already been issued. The flight itinerary includes the desired time in Dubai. The itinerary into and out of Dubai should be on one ticket (PNR), which must be an Emirates flight.

This can be a bit tricky. You can't necessarily apply for the visa online through their website like with the other airlines. Instead, you need to contact a nearby travel shop to see if they can help you with your Dubai Tourist Visa application. Unfortunately, only a few travel shops can help with your visa application for Dubai, so be sure you call to get all the relevant information.

Just like with FlyDubai, you can't apply online through the website. Instead, you need to contact the Air Arabia sales center near you. When you contact them, they'll tell you everything you need to know about applying for the Dubai Visiting Visa through Air Arabia.

Apply Through Agencies And Hotels

Licensed travel agents and hotels in the UAE can arrange a tourist visa if you purchase the ticket through them and maintain a hotel reservation with the specific hotel.

When contacting the hotel or travel agency, ask them if they can make the visa application on your behalf.

If they can apply on your behalf, you'll need to send them all the required documents for a Dubai tourist visa. Additionally, you might have to send information they might need during the application process.

You can also contact travel agencies in your country for any tourist packages available to the UAE in collaboration with a local tour operator.

It is essential to check the authenticity of the travel agents you're dealing with. For example, don't pay or send copies of your official documents required for a Dubai tourist visa until you are 100 percent sure the tour operator is genuine.

Dubai residents who want to host their friends or family in the country can now get a 3-month visit visa, according to residents and travel agencies. The host is required to pay a refundable deposit of Dh1,000 for this visa.

KV, who works as a PRO for a Dubai-based company, said that he has secured these visas for his company employees. “I have applied for this visa for family members of two of my colleagues in the last month,” he said. “I approached the AMER centre in Karama near the post office, and the process was easy. However, as per my experience, the family members must be immediate blood relatives like mother, father or siblings.”

According to him, the total cost of the service was Dh1,770. “The deposit was Dh1,000, and the visa with typing charges and service fee cost Dh770,” he said.

In October 2022, sweeping reforms were made to entry visas in the UAE as part of the Advanced Visa System. It introduced one of the largest residency and entry permit reforms in the UAE to date.

However, according to travel agencies in the country, they are unable to apply for these visas in their systems. “As of now, only individuals applying on the system can get these visas,” said Afi Ahmed from Smart Travels. “The individuals must apply for it online on the GDRFA website, on the app or through an Amer typing centre.”

On the GDRFA website, users can also apply for entry permits for business or job opportunities, entry permits for those awaiting their Green Visas, as well as a patient escort permit, among others.

Dubai resident Mohammed said he had applied for a visa for his mother to travel to the city. “Initially, I planned to apply for a 60-day visit visa through a travel agency,” he said. “But when I heard of the 90-day visa, I applied for it through an Amer centre. It was a very easy process.”

As part of the advanced visa services, an array of new entry permits was introduced. Some of them included a job exploration entry visa , one for business entry , a five-year multi-entry tourist visa , one to seek medical treatment, for temporary work , and for studies and training.

Last week, UAE's Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) announced the implementation of a new package of updates to improve the services provided to citizens, residents, and visitors through its smart services system.

The ICA has adopted a list of 15 services that were updated in its smart services system as of February 1, 2023.

GCC states have unanimously approved the proposed unified tourism visa system for the region , setting the stage for a new era in the highly crucial economic sector.

The system, which is expected to come into effect between 2024 to 2025 across the six-nation bloc , was announced by GCC Secretary General Jassim Al Budaiwi at the 40th meeting of GCC interior ministers in Oman.

The decision is expected to streamline travel logistics and underpins the “continuous communication and co-ordination” between the GCC states, he said.

“The unified Gulf tourist visa is a project that will contribute to facilitating and streamlining the movement of residents and tourists between the six GCC countries and will, undoubtedly, have a positive [impact] on the economic and tourist sectors,” Mr Al Budaiwi said.

The council also approved the electronic linking of traffic offences between GCC states and is preparing a comprehensive strategy to combat illegal drugs, which aims to “contribute to the fight against [its] scourge”, Mr Al Budaiwi said.

The unified visa is a major element of the GCC 2030 tourism strategy, which is aimed at increasing the sector's economic contribution through increased regional travel and higher hotel occupancy rates, Abdulla bin Touq, UAE Minister of Economy, said last month.

The strategy intends to boost the number of visitors to the bloc to 128.7 million visitors by 2030. That is up from 39.8 million last year, which was an increase of about 137 per cent compared with 2021.

The total number of hotels in the region stood at 10,649 by the end of last year, recording a growth of 1.2 per cent, compared with 2016.

Out of that, the UAE alone has 1,114 hotels, ranking second in the region after Saudi Arabia, Mr bin Touq said.

The Middle East's tourism sector has recorded the strongest post-coronavirus rebound in the world, despite persistent global economic headwinds, according to HSBC.

The region, home to the biggest two Arab economies, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, is unique in recording a “total recovery” in terms of tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2023, the bank said in a research report in August.

The new programme is expected to be a game-changer for the region , according to industry operators.

There is an untapped market for tourism in the GCC bloc, with many travellers put off by visa restrictions that made reaching some nations difficult, they said.

A single GCC tourism visa will be a “fantastic development” for tourism in the region , making it more attractive for visitors and businesses, Dubai Airports chief executive Paul Griffiths told The National last week.

“It's one of those planks in the travel arsenal that will be greater than the sum of its parts … The development of tourism in other countries in the Middle East will make the whole region more attractive and encourage more businesses,” he said.

The more cities there are on the tourism map that encourage people to visit the Middle East, the better the world's perception of the region, Mr Griffiths said.

Over the last decade, the UAE has seen a tremendous growth in the number of travellers from India. Even the hot summer months of July and August when outside is blazing hot, the cool air-conditioned malls in the UAE are flush with tourists, who come to partake in the Summer Surprises shopping bonanza.

Unified visa to travel in six Gulf countries: How will it benefit tourists?

 alt=

A unified tourist visa was recently introduced for the member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). The meeting where the decision was taken also approved the launch of the first phase of an electronics system for interlinking data on traffic violations in GCC countries. Earlier, the UAE had revealed that a unified tourist visa for the Dubai-GCC area had been approved and that it would come into force in 2024. The UAE’s official news agency, WAM, had reported that the procedures for implementing the visa scheme would be discussed soon.

Easier for tourists to explore the region Once it comes into force, only one visa would be required for tourists to explore six Gulf nations – Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, UAE, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. The Schengen visa is a similar facility that makes it very convenient for tourists to visit European countries on a single visa. The visa is expected to become a reality within two years. It's expected to attract 12.87 crore tourists to the Gulf by 2030. During the visa period, travellers can stay in each country for a fixed number of days, visit tourist centres and proceed to the neighbouring country. The fact that it does not require any formal procedures will prove convenient to tourists.

There are 837 tourist sites in total in these six countries, of which the UAE has 399. The region also has a total of 224 tourism events and activities, as per reports. As for the number of hotel rooms, there are a total of 6,74, 832 in the region, which aims to increase its foreign tourists by over 220% by 2030.

GCC unified tourist visa: Short-term rental demands set to rise

Posted: 12 November 2023 | Last updated: 16 November 2023

Demand for short-term rentals is set to spike in the UAE as the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states have agreed to roll out a , similar to the Schengen-like visa for tourists worldwide.

The interior minister of the Gulf states approved the single GCC tourist visa in Oman last week, which will significantly create new jobs in the sectors and add fillip to the overall economies of the region, especially the UAE and Saudi Arabia.

The regional governments would study a unified tourist route that . The route will be followed by foreign tourists whose stay extends for over 30 days. The UAE’s Emirates Tourism Council would also prepare the Emirati tourism route that connects all seven emirates.

As part of the GCC’s 2030 strategy, there are 837 tourist sites, of which the UAE has 399, the highest among all Gulf countries. The UAE also hosts the most number of tourism events and activities at 73 out of a total of 224 across the whole Gulf region.

Tourism, hospitality and real estate industry executives are highly confident that the UAE and the neighbouring countries will benefit just like in on the unified visa.

However, they believe that the short-term rental segment in the UAE, especially Dubai, will be the largest beneficiary as it is set to witness massive demand on the back of plenty of options available to tourists as compared to other cities and countries around the region.

According to the latest figures released by Dubai Tourism, 12.4 million people visited the emirate between January and September 2023, a significant increase from the overall number seen in 2022 of 7.08 million visitors, a 97% increase from 2021.

Tourist traffic to the UAE has been growing quite steadily since 2020, and with the launch of this visa, they will have the option of exploring more countries. The short travel times and similar weather conditions will also make it easy for travellers to visit multiple cities in the GCC. This should naturally positively impact the short-term rental and holiday home market in the UAE.

Driven by rising demand and prices of short-term rental properties, global as well as local short-term rental platforms such as Airbnb, dubizzle, BlueGround, HomesGetaway and others will see substantial increases in new listings in the coming years.

Fibha Ahmed, sales director at dubizzle, termed the unified GCC tourist visa as a welcome announcement, one that is bound to help the region as a whole enjoy greater tourist activity.

“We already know how the Schengen visa has done wonders for tourist flow into the various European countries. A unified visa might encourage tourists from other GCC nations to explore different cities within the UAE, including Dubai. This could result in a more even distribution of tourists across the country, impacting short-term rental markets beyond traditional tourist hubs.”

The classified website dubizzle has recorded a 25 per cent surge in short-term rental listings in the UAE in 2023, with a notable 26 per cent increase specifically in Dubai, reflecting a promising trend in the market.

The new visa will also intensify competition and impact pricing strategies.

“With more tourists arriving in the UAE, holiday rentals are prone to experiencing higher occupancy rates, especially during peak travel seasons. Property owners and rental platforms could benefit from increased demand. A rise in tourism can also contribute to the local economy through increased spending on dining, entertainment, and other tourist-related activities. This economic boost will lead to overall positive effects on the real estate and rental markets,” added Ahmed.

Depending on the level of demand, she added that property owners may adjust rental prices to capitalise on increased tourist arrivals.

The tourism infrastructure is already well-developed across the GCC, especially in the UAE, with almost 11,000 hotels and almost 700,000 hotel rooms.

The GCC has set an ambitious goal of welcoming 128.7 million visitors by 2030, with the UAE leading the charge in the tourism sector. With 399 tourist sites and a plethora of events and activities that attract global attention, the UAE is a prime destination for travellers worldwide.

Short-term rentals allow property owners to manage their properties and generate additional income, making it an attractive option for many. With a growing number of travellers seeking unique and 'home away from home' experiences, the short-term rental market is expected to thrive, and more property owners may find it appealing to move into this sector.

According to Farooq Syed, CEO of Springfield Properties in Dubai, there are currently a plethora of short-term rental options available in the UAE, particularly in Dubai, including apartments, villas, and unique properties, catering to the varied preferences of travellers and providing visitors with even more choices to ensure that they find accommodations that best suit their needs and preferences.

Syed stated that the GCC tourist visa promises a positive outlook on the back of a significant increase in the tourism sector's contribution to the UAE’s economy going forward.

“We expect a surge in demand for short-term rentals. Tourists often seek a ‘home from home’ experience, and short-term rentals are exceptionally well-suited to provide precisely that.”

Syed anticipates a notable increase in short-term rental rates, particularly during peak tourist seasons and in sought-after locations.

“The convenience and accessibility offered by the unified GCC tourist visa will likely draw more tourists to the UAE and Dubai, leading to a surge in demand for short-term rental properties. Property owners and operators can adjust their rates and potentially see higher investment returns. However, the extent of the increase will vary based on individual property characteristics, location, and the broader economic landscape.”

According to Springfield Properties' chief executive, short-term rentals have already proven to be a preferred choice for many visitors to the UAE, and Dubai stands as a trendy hotspot. Among these visitors, you'll find those from neighbouring GCC nations, who often opt for short-term rentals for quick weekend getaways, European tourists lured by Dubai's luxury shopping and year-round sunshine, and Asian markets that appreciate the convenience and variety of available accommodations.

“Dubai's reputation as a global hub further entices tourists from every corner of the world, and many of them embrace short-term rentals as a means to enjoy a personalised and homely experience during their stay."
