• DREAM UP A BUCKET LIST

We’ve been road-tripping together for over 15 years now, and one of our favorite things to do on a road trip is to dream up an adventure together. We pull out some pen and paper and write down our top ten places we want to go. On a car ride to Northern California, is where we first started to dream up our grand trip to Croatia . Some advice–dream big and don’t get caught up in the grounded reality of “how” it’s going to happen. Figure that part out later. For now, it’s about dreaming up all the places you would love to visit. You can use an old-fashioned notebook or have a special bucket list journal as we do. • ROAD TRIP TRIVIA

I’m a trivia lover. Inside my head is a bunch of totally useless information that is only helpful for when I’m playing a game like trivial pursuit. The best way to pass an hour or two on a long car ride is to test out your own trivia knowledge. You can narrow the topic down to a specific topic like 2000’s trivia and travel trivia or you can go for a general trivia deck. • MUSIC GAMES

If you’re more of a music buff, play a fun music trivia game to test your music knowledge. Are you sure you can remember the name of that top 40 hit from the ’90s? Download a music trivia app and play it into your car speakers so everyone can play together.

• AUDIBLE BOOKS

If you’re looking for things to do on a car ride by yourself, then an Audible book is the reigning champion of car activities. Long car rides are a perfect place to learn about a new skill, read a murder mystery, or a frivolous comedy that quickly passes the time away. If you don’t have an audible membership, you can look at doing a free 30-day trial here . Don’t forget to download the books before leaving so you aren’t using data or relying on a good signal.

Also, if not everyone wants to listen to the Audible together, make sure to bring your headphones (if you’re the passenger), so you can listen to your heart’s content.

If you’re looking for road trip entertainment, a podcast can offer a more engaging experience since they tend to have interviews and a more traditional talk radio format. The range of topics is immense, from family-friendly storytelling to educational discussions to creepy murder plots, so do a quick search in a subject you might be interested in or look through a list of the most popular podcasts .

• LEARN A LANGUAGE

Now is the time you will FINALLY learn how to speak Cantonese. Live out your dream of fluently speaking a different language and mixing in with the locals by downloading a language-learning app and listening to it in your car. Top language learning apps are Rosetta Stone and Babbel .

• 20 QUESTIONS GAME

Twenty Questions is the quintessential car ride game to pull out when you’re brainstorming things to do on a road trip. If you haven’t played the game, the basic idea is that someone can ask 20 yes or no questions to help them guess what you’re thinking about. You’ll set a topic like “celebrities” and ask away. For example, “Is this person a singer?” or “Are they alive?” and so on until you can guess the person.

This game is so trivial, but gosh darn it, we love playing this game when we need things to do on a long road trip. I honestly think we’ve managed to pass an entire hour away going back and forth with the ABC game. The game goes like this: You set up a general category like “fruit” or “animals” and then go back and forth, listing fruit in ABC order. For instance, partner A says “apple,” and partner B says “banana,” and so on.

• CHECK OFF YOUR TO DO LIST

I might be revealing how much of a parent I am right now, but long drives in the car are where I can often get banal stuff done. Something about being strapped into a car with nowhere to run allows me to check things off my list, like planning out our meals for a month or plotting out a content calendar for our blog. If you’re a passenger, grab your calendar and check things off your to-do list you’ve meant to do but never manage to. Maybe that long car ride is when you finally clear out your inbox with 10,000 emails dating back to 2001.

• PRACTICE MINDFULNESS

On the flip side of trying to fill every moment in your life with something to do, you can go the opposite way and meditate, do breathwork, or practice mindfulness in the car. When I used to have a 45-minute commute from work, I would often put on my breathing app and listen to it the entire ride home so I could ground myself before going into the onslaught of mom life. Even if you’re not a parent, our minds chatter away all day, so having a dedicated time to ground and listen to a guided meditation or guided breathwork is a fantastic alternative to getting stressed by traffic and everything that life throws your way. You can choose to do it self-guided or download an app that guides you through the process. I used Headspace, but there are hundreds to choose from. Also, if you’re the driver, it’s best to stick to guided breathing rather than a meditation that suggests you close your eyes. Because, you know…road safety.

• HAVE A PINTEREST PICNIC

Road tripping can often mean gas station burritos or fast food burgers that leave you feeling sluggish and guilty. Change it up by having a Pinterest-worthy picnic complete with gourmet charcuterie, pinot noir, and a red checkered picnic blanket. You don’t have to have those specific things, but having a pre-packed picnic with nicer food is a fun change in energy when you’ve been spending a few hours on the road. Instead of packing a cooler or an oversized wooden picnic basket, use a picnic backpack like this that comes with silverware, wine glasses (for the passengers), plates, cutting board, blanket, napkins, and more. Check your Google Maps for a park that’s right off the highway, or try out a picnic table at a rest stop.

• SCOUT FOR ROADSIDE ODDITIES

While getting from Point A to Point B, take a detour to see some oddball roadside attractions. Oh gosh, there are so many weird things to see in the US. We stopped by Cadillac Ranch, an outdoor art installation featuring 10 Cadillacs buried face down, when we were driving through Amarillo, Texas. Visitors are encouraged to grab a can of spray paint and leave their own artistic mark on the retro cars. You can see videos and pictures of it here on our Instagram. Fun, quirky, and totally worth the 30-minute stop! Finding peculiar roadside attractions feels like a must-do when looking for what to do on a road trip. You can use an app like RoadTrippers to discover what’s on your route.

How long has it been since you’ve played Mad Libs? I think it might be time to bring them out when you’re scheming up things to do on a road trip. There are various mad-lib games available to you, so search for the booklet that hits up your demographic whether you’re traveling with kids or going on a road trip with friends. • YOUR TOP 5 GAME

A great conversation starter game is to have everyone list their “top 5.” Someone comes up with a topic like the top 5 songs of all time or your five favorite meals of all time. If you are playing with kids, you might want to reduce the number to your top 3. You can write it down, but I find it’s more relaxed to talk about your answers as they come. Other fun topics are the five people who would be at your dinner party, your top five movies, your top five celebrity crushes, or your top five travel destinations.

• CROSSWORD PUZZLES + SUDOKU

For those moments when you’re looking for quiet things to do in a car, pull out a booklet of challenging brain puzzles. I’m always a fan of crossword puzzle booklets and sudoku booklets , but you might like a general brain teaser book with an assortment of puzzles and trivia.

• DOCUMENT THE JOURNEY

Document the road trip journey in a creative way. You can make a travel scrapbook where you collect mementos like postcards or kitschy roadside gifts, or you can take photos or videos of the trip. One fun idea is to ditch the iPhone or Go Pro and opt for an updated but old-fashioned Polaroid camera like this one . If you have kids, you can buy a kid-friendly camera like this one . Just be sure they realize that the camera doesn’t have an infinite supply of photos! The road trip is such a classic adventure that going old school with a Polaroid feels kind of perfect.

Many things can happen on a road trip, so you gotta be prepared. Even if you don’t get to use half of these things, it’s better to have them handy just in case. Traveling is not always 100% predictable and you never know what could go wrong.

By packing all the essentials, you can handle any mishaps along the road without stressing too much about it. Traveling with friends usually shows different sides of people, especially in unexpected situations. Even Mark Twain had something to say about this:

With that said, prepare to have a great ride with your friends and have lots of joy together by using this extensive list of fun road trip things to do!

1. Let your hair down

Going on a road trip means detaching from your daily reality for a little bit and doing something different.

I’m not saying you should get wild and end up in jail or something, but let yourself get loose a little! Mix up your routines, try to be more spontaneous, say yes to more things, and be open for new opportunities to come your way.

And the most important: have fun!

2. Ride without navigation

Isn’t it fun to get lost together? This is likely an adventure you’ll always remember!

If you are used to always coming on a trip with a strict plan, maybe try to offer more freedom this time. If organizing everything is important to you, include being spontaneous to the plan! It may mean to only plan the big destination points without binding them to time intervals or to have chunks of the plan with no specific route.

In other words, plan your road trip well but allow for unexpected detours. Allow yourself and others to be more flexible and let the road give you more fun adventures!

3. Get inspired with some quotes about traveling with friends

Are you already in a car or just thinking about organizing a road trip? In any case, here are some fun quotes about trips with friends that will inspire you and get your mood up! Share a few favorites with your road trip buddies and discuss what they mean to you both.

A weird but true fact: sometimes other people can express your feelings more than you can express them yourself. Especially when they are writers and public speakers who know their ways with words, right?

4. Ask fun road trip questions

The main idea behind going on road trips with your friends is not only to relax and have fun but also to deepen your connections. Asking each other interesting questions, even silly ones, may result in having a discussion on subjects you’ve never touched before.

If you think you know your friends too well for this, these conversation starters can easily prove you wrong!

5. Listen to a podcast

When you are tired from all the talking from the previous point, a good idea is to shut up for a bit and listen to someone other than each other. Thankfully, it’s 2021 and you are not limited by the radio stations as people were before. While people on the radio often talk about random things, consider listening to a podcast dedicated to a specific topic that interests all of you.

6. Stop for a picnic

Instead of inevitably eating super unhealthy things like burgers or hot dogs at gas stations or in the car, why not plan a picnic as a part of your journey!

Find a beautiful spot while driving and pull over to have a bite together in a nice setting. You can prepare some food and snacks at home or get takeout on the way (preferably not your typical junk food – maybe grab a salad instead this time?). You can even combine this with ideas #23 or #31 from this list if you want!

If that’s something you may enjoy, don’t forget to pack an outdoor blanket and a pack of eco-friendly bamboo utensils instead of plastic ones. This picnic may also be a good time to play “Exploding kittens” or “Unstable unicorns” if you are into board games like me!

7. Play Would You Rather

I obviously didn’t invent this game, and you likely played it already if that’s not your first ever road trip.

In any case, you can still make it fun and unique every time by using different sets of questions. For example, here is a whole book with more than 500 Would-You-Rather questions you can ask each other.

Some of them are silly (“Would you rather have three arms or three legs?”), while others may lead to deeper conversations (“Would you rather make a small difference in the lives of ten people or a massive difference in the life of one person?”).

This is the kind of game that may uncover new sides of your friends for you, even if you know each other for ages.

8. Get out of the car and walk around

Unless you are on a highway, nothing stops you from pulling over once in a while to walk around and stretch your body. Your muscles likely get stiff after all the sitting so you’ll feel wonderful to get out of the car. At least stop for a coffee and don’t have it inside the car!

These five to ten minutes out will let the blood flow better inside your body and will give a refreshing feeling to all your muscles. This can also be a good time to have that picnic from idea #6 and get some fresh air and food at the same time!

9. Take a group photo that is special to this road trip

Instead of the usual selfie, try to capture something more special and unique this time. Maybe it’s a beautiful location, the feeling of happiness on your friends’ faces, or an interesting group activity you don’t usually do. Try to incorporate the mood of this road trip into your fun pictures.

If there are more than two or three of you on the road, consider taking a selfie stick or a tripod with you to make sure everyone can fit nicely in group photos. It gives you some flexibility when you can capture more than just your heads!

Put some thought into it cause these photos will remind you of your friendship and make you smile even decades later! How nice is it to find a picture you haven’t seen in years and immediately feel the wonderful atmosphere from that trip!

You can even print a mini photo book later with your photos from a road trip (and give it as a gift to everyone who was in it!).

10. Read a book out loud

When exactly was the last time you read a book aloud? Did you ever do it as an adult?

I always bring either a book or my Kindle when I’m traveling but I never actually considered reading aloud to a person who is with me. Maybe it’s because I’m a shy introvert and don’t wanna bother other people. Or maybe our tastes in literature are too dissimilar…

Sometimes I read the best parts aloud to a person next to me but I’ve never thought about reading something together! I should probably consider it for my next road trip as well.

Anyway, if you have a book and others only have their phones, offer to read to them! You can take turns in reading so nobody gets too tired, just don’t involve the driver. Such a nice way to kill time together!

11. …or Listen to an audiobook

Not everyone is a very talkative person, especially when your road consists of many long hours. More often than not you just want to sit back, relax, and enjoy something pleasant. Instead of everyone reaching for their phones and getting lost in scrolling social media, better listen to a good book and then discuss it together!

Depending on your road trip length, you can probably listen to a whole book, or even a few, during your journey. If you have an Audible subscription , you can choose from a variety of great books or switch to listening to another one if you don’t enjoy the current one.

Make sure to choose something that every one of your friends will enjoy too! While it may not be as easy with fiction genres, you may still try finding something in recent Amazon bestsellers . Or listen to an uplifting non-fiction book like You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero that will definitely improve everyone’s mood.

12. Play I wish I didn’t know

Wanna do something funny? How about a world’s filthiest trivia game ?

This is definitely not for kids. In fact, it has a 17+ age restriction on the cover! But play with a group of adults, and you’ll all get to learn many new things about the world that you’d rather not know.

There will be a lot of laugh, a lot of hope, and likely a lot of screaming “ewww, gross!”. But you want an unforgettable road trip experience, right?

13. Lock up your phones

While that’s not a fun activity by itself, it’s a prerequisite to having more fun together!

You probably heard by now about these smartphone containers that help people cope with digital addictions. If your friends are often distracted by their phones when you are trying to have a conversation, a safe like this may be a good solution!

You can all agree to take a break from social media and put all your devices in a box for a specified time interval. You can try it for an hour and see how it goes. I wouldn’t recommend blocking phone access for the whole trip ’cause there may be some situations when you’ll need them. For example, to pay for something if you are out of cash or to make a call in case of emergency.

Eliminating digital distractions like that is a great way to connect with your friends and spend more quality time together instead of endless scrolling.

14. Wear matching road trip shirts

If you want to make this trip more special, order a bunch of matching themed shirts in advance!

It can be a shirt with a special message like on this picture above, or a fun travel-themed T-shirt that everyone could wear more than just this one time.

Don’t do it for every trip or it stops being special. But do it at least once so everyone has something at the end to remember this particular journey. Also, the photos from your road trip will be much cooler if you all are wearing awesome matching shirts!

15. Find little souvenirs to remember this trip

You can be as creative with this as you want!

Postcards and fridge magnets are the most common things to bring back as souvenirs. I also used to collect sugar packets from cafeterias around the world.

If something especially interesting happens to you on this trip, think about something related to the situation that will remind you about it back at home. As long as it makes you smile, reminisce, and brings out warm feelings for your friends, take it as a souvenir!

If you travel to another country, a good idea can be to get a wall art piece. It can be a beautiful painting from a local shop or a minimalist photograph that would look nice in your room. Or you can print your own photo from this road trip on a canvas if you capture something worth being on the wall.

When it comes to souvenirs, it can literally be a little something from a gas station you stopped at. It doesn’t even need to mean anything to anyone other than you and your friends!

Whatever you decide to take, make sure it’s not illegal. For example, taking sand from some beaches is against the law so do your research in advance to avoid the trouble!

16. Stretch together on the go

Sitting in a car for many hours at a time can feel very uncomfortable.

Don’t make it seem like another workday behind the desk! This may give your brain the wrong associations and make the trip impression much less fun.

The human body is meant to be active, and being in a limited space is not an excuse. There are a lot of things you can do to move around even in a moving car. Make sure to talk your friends into stretching with you so you aren’t the only one doing weird moves.

17. Make a fun road trip playlist and sing along

Driving with feel-good music is usually more comfortable than listening to the radio, news, or going in silence. Fun songs help to tune the overall mood of your trip into a more positive one, and make you feel more energized.

Make a selection of your favorite songs that you can all sing along to together or find a ready-made playlist in a genre you prefer. Aim to choose uplifting and positive songs instead of depressing or sad ones, even if that’s what you are used to listening to. Remember that you want to make everyone smile on a trip, not cry!

18. Meet new people

Even when you travel with friends , you can always meet more good people along the road. Be nice and friendly and allow for your path to cross with someone else’s. Who knows what might come out of it!

If you are visiting a new area, meeting locals can be very beneficial. Even if you don’t become instant friends, they may show you some local gems and add an unexpected spark to your trip. Literally even talking for a minute with someone can give you new ideas and place recommendations you never considered before!

19. Count colorful cars

Watching cars is a fun simple game you can play with adults or kids.

Each person picks a color and whenever you pass a car of that color, you get a point. You can play till 10 or 50, or 100 points, or just play till the next stop and see whose color wins by comparing the points you all got.

This works very well to kill some time when everyone is tired and not really up for more intelligent games and deep conversations.

20. Answer some road trip trivia questions

If you have a growth mindset, you know that you can learn new things and continue to develop your intelligence at any age. A road trip is a very convenient place to expand your horizons by playing a trivia game that fills the knowledge gaps you may have.

There are all kinds of trivia question sets available online, for example, here on Amazon . Some are general knowledge questions, some can be more specific around one topic or location, and there are some tricky question sets that are especially fun to play with a group of close friends.

21. Make an Instagram contest

If you all like taking photos, come up with some kind of a photo contest for the trip. Aim to create one amazing photo each and then share all of them on Instagram and make people vote on the best one!

You can even decide on a prize for a winner to make it more interesting and competitive. And don’t forget to use some of the best friendship hashtags for more exposure!

22. Eat something unusual

With friends or not, road trips are meant to be different from your usual life!

One way to experience something new is to eat something new. We all have to eat every day anyway, so the only thing you need to do is to be more open-minded with your meal choices.

Before leaving for your trip, explore the target areas online: look through the restaurant reviews on Tripadvisor or find a few local gems that you will be passing. Try to not order anything that you usually order. For example, if you always eat pizza, then have pasta, or go to a Thai restaurant instead of Italian. Or try to find the food you haven’t tasted before! This will give you another new thing to remember about this trip.

As an alternative, make a new tradition with friends to eat something specific on a road trip! Whether it’s sharing a pizza, enjoying tacos, or indulging in oysters, why not let it become your special group thing?

23. Brew your own coffee in the wild

If you are a coffee lover like I am, you would enjoy making coffee outdoors for a change!

I once saw a video from one of my favorite videographers on Youtube and I have this idea in mind ever since. This is what I’m talking about:

The process doesn’t have to be as hard either: there are many great portable espresso machines designed specifically for camping and travelers so you can have a fresh cup of coffee wherever you are. This will impress your friends, too!

24. Catch up on sleep

Unless you are a designated driver, take some time in a car to catch up on your sleep. Especially if you aren’t sleeping the healthy 8-9 hours every day (who does?), this may be a good time to relax and have a nap.

Far away, in the middle of some unknown road, you can’t make yourself busy with a bunch of tasks like you would at home. That’s why there is no need to feel guilty even if you take a nap at midday. Call it a siesta, and enjoy it like Spanish people do!

To make sleeping in a moving car more comfortable, always bring an inflatable pillow to support your head. A sleeping mask and earplugs will also come in handy so others can talk without disturbing your sleep.

25. Take funny photos of sleeping friends

If you have a really long road trip, there will be time when some of you are sleeping. Many people sleep in funny poses, especially when there isn’t much room in a car. You can spend some time “decorating” them with whatever stuff you have at your disposal and taking a few pictures just for fun!

But please, please, don’t post those pics anywhere. It’s one thing to laugh together, but embarrassing them in front of other people may easily do harm to your future relationship. Chances are, they won’t ever go on another road trip with you!

If you are immature enough to paint your friends’ faces for fun, make sure to not use a permanent marker like Ross did to Rachel!

26. Share your dreams

When was the last time, if ever, that you talked to your friends about your dreams and goals?

Unless you go on a trip with a bunch of strangers with whom you don’t feel comfortable sharing personal stuff, bring up the dreams subject somewhere along the way.

What would you do if money/society/age/physics/etc wasn’t an issue? What is the specific idea of a dream life for you and why does it seem unrealistic to you? What about your friends? Discussing these things may be very therapeutic because some things aren’t as impossible as you may think. By brainstorming together, you may share different perspectives and maybe come closer to achieving your dreams!

27. Exercise your creativity with friends

There are many ways to be creative together on a road trip! Here are a couple of my random ideas:

• Create an interesting story together. One person starts with an opening sentence, the next one continues the story with another sentence, and so on. You can go as many circles as you want and come up with crazy plot twists. The fun part is to add an unexpected turn of events and make the next player look for the way out! And nobody knows how it ends until it does!
• Draw an unusual creature together. This is the one the driver should probably sit out because it’s too distracting. Take a piece of paper and a pen (or a tablet if you didn’t do #13) and draw a base of a character. It’s easier to start with some kind of geometrical or abstract shape to be your creature’s body. Then pass it on to someone else to add something to the picture, and so on. In the end, you should get a really fun and unique character in the creation of which each of your participated equally!

28. Participate in a silly dance together

Remember that road trip playlist from idea #17? Wait for an especially uplifting song and dance, even if that’s just with the upper part of your body. Engage the others and learn silly moves from each other to have more fun.

This is also a nice way to stay somewhat active during a long drive!

By the way, if you haven’t seen this guy dancing, I’ll just leave this video here for good vibes!

29. Talk about something deep

When you are driving in the dark and just can’t laugh anymore, it may be time for some deeper bonding with your friends. You may think you know who they are and what they are all about but in reality, you never know all of it. Humans are complicated beings, after all.

More often than not, we only see the top layer of someone’s life, personality, and feelings. If you are interested to see the rest of their icebergs (and let them see yours), deep conversation starters may be very helpful. Or just ask them how they feel and discuss each other’s long-term goals. You may be surprised!

30. Play magnetic chess or checkers

Stuck in the back seat and getting bored while friends in the front are talking without you?

Pull a travel chess board out of your bag and invite one of your friends to play with you! Make sure to bring a magnetic travel version so your pieces don’t get flying all over when the car jerks on a pebble.

If you aren’t sure whether your friends can play chess, consider bringing a 3-in-1 set with checkers and backgammon to have more options.

31. Watch a sunset

Beautiful pinky-orange hues of sunset always make the world more beautiful!

If your timeline allows for it, make a stop someplace nice to watch a sunset and spend some quiet time in nature surrounded by people you love.

Sunrise may also work but everyone is more sleepy and sometimes cranky, and it’s usually colder early in the morning, so personally, I prefer sunsets. But if you are on the road anyway and the sky starts to look especially beautiful, make a stop and let yourself enjoy it!

32. Catch little moments and make a video after

You don’t have to be a professional videographer to make fun videos these days. People do it every day with entry-level vlogging cameras or even in a form of Instagram reels captured with a phone.

I love taking photos but with videos, you get to capture much more of the mood and details of your journey, as opposed to a bunch of still moments. Shoot movement, landscapes, your friends having fun, and beautiful surroundings that give you the feeling of what that place is all about.

33. Enjoy the journey

Last, but not least, of my road trip tips with friends, is to enjoy every minute of it!

Don’t focus on the destination alone: you have hours in the company of great people, so why not make the most of it? Use the ideas from this list or do something completely different next time to stay away from boredom. Engage other guys in conversations and learn more about each other while you are stuck in a small metal box for all those hours!

Part of the excitement of being on a road trip is giving yourself the freedom to stop whenever you want. While you’re out there on the road, your co-pilot can be looking for exciting places to stop.

Bring plenty of entertainment with you 

Like I was saying, you’ll want things with you in the car to keep you occupied while driving…or riding along. If you  bring plenty of road trip entertainment with you , you’ll never be without something to do to make your trip go by faster. 

And  make sure all your devices are fully charged  so they don’t die on you in the middle of reading or watching something you’re really enjoying. That would be the worst! 

Here are some things that work for me: 

Books are a road trip “must-have” 

I always make sure to have a couple of great reading options with me when I road trip. Obviously, regular books are for when I’m a passenger. This should probably go without saying, but just in case it doesn’t…DO NOT read while driving. 

Okay. Now let’s continue. 

I never know what kind of reading mood I’m going to be in, so I like to bring a couple of options if I have the space for them on my long car ride.

If you enjoy reading e-books you can download the  free Kindle app  onto your phone or tablet. With the Kindle app, you can take your full e-book library with you without packing any additional devices. Or try out Amazon’s Kindle Unlimited for free to find your next great road trip read. 

Audiobooks 

Audiobooks are perfect for road trips. With an audiobook, you can “read” even while you’re driving. If you’re unsure how you feel about audiobooks, you can try Amazon’s Audible for free just to see if you like it.

Media downloads 

But what if you don’t feel like reading or listening to an audiobook? There are plenty of other great media options to keep yourself occupied over the long miles of your next road trip. 

Download some options to your mobile device before you leave for your trip so that they’re ready and waiting for you no matter where you are. 

Here are a few of my favorite ideas: 

• Take a look at what  movies and shows  are available for download on  Netflix.  
• Download a few episodes of  your favorite podcasts  and any new ones you’ve been wanting to try. 
• If you have Amazon Music Unlimited , download some of your  favorite albums  or maybe some  new music  you’ve been meaning to listen to.

Enjoy some good conversation 

Sometimes things can get pretty boring on a long car ride. Especially if you are with people who don’t like to talk much or you don’t actually know very well. 

It’s nice to have things to break up the silence. Try having everyone in your car turn off all electronic devices and put them away (phones, iPads, etc .) for a short time.  

You could ask everyone to contribute something to talk about. If you’re stumped for things to talk about, try these  road trip questions that will spark some great conversations . 

Everyone could take turns asking and answering questions. You could even make kind of a game out of it, where the person who answers the question gets to choose the next question to ask and who has to answer it. 

Create your ultimate road trip playlist 

We touched on music earlier, but playing music while on the road is a great option. Music brings a lot of things to the table. It can help you stay awake while driving, give you something to sing along with, and give you energy. 

I love to use Spotify or Amazon Music Unlimited to create playlists of my favorite songs. 

Review the next phase of your itinerary 

Take some time during your long car ride to go over the plans for the next stop on your road trip. 

You could: 

• Make plans for where to eat at your destination (to avoid the dreaded “Where do you want to eat?” “I don’t know. Where do you want to eat?” scenario).
• Discuss sightseeing options at your next stop if you’re having trouble narrowing it down. And getting everyone’s input will help them feel involved in the trip planning. 

Play some classic car ride games 

Games are a great way to pass the time. Try some classic car ride games like… 

• The License Plate Game:  Look for license plates from all 50 states. Give bonus points for international license plates. 
• The Alphabet Game:  Look for all 26 letters of the alphabet in order using road signs, business signs, etc. BUT NOT license plates.
• Who Am I?:  Think of a famous person and everyone else has to try to guess who you are by asking you questions about who you’re thinking of. 
• The Movie Game:  The game starts with a person naming an actor or actress. The next person has to name a movie that actor or actress is in. Then the next person has to name another actor or actress in that movie and so on. Play continues until someone is stumped or gives an incorrect response. 

Enjoy some fun road trip trivia questions and answers.

Grab a nap 

When it’s not your turn to drive (obviously), take advantage of the time to rest up before your next turn at the wheel. If you need help sleeping in the car, you might try a sleep mask to block out light. 

Take in the scenery and enjoy some quiet 

Sometimes one of the most enjoyable things to do in the car on a road trip is to do nothing at all. Just relax, take in the view, and enjoy the quiet!   

Take a break from the road at mealtimes 

When we road trip we often pack a lunch for the first day (so that we can save some money), but then after that we plan to stop at meal times. 

It gives everyone a chance to get out of the car, especially the driver, a break from the cramped space. Of course, you can still stop at meal times even if you pack your food. You could even look for a scenic spot for a nice picnic and enjoy some fresh air. 

Find some points of interest along your route 

When road trip stops aren’t too far apart, it can be fun to find interesting things along the way where you could stop. Take the opportunity to get out of the car for a bit to stretch your legs, change drivers and see something cool or amusing. 

You could… 

• check out historical landmarks 
• Stop at roadside food stands 
• or simply just take a walk 

Fun and interesting stops will make your trip more memorable. One of my favorite road trip stops ever was Angel Oak outside Charleston in South Carolina.

Tips for a long road trip 

Although it’s fun to try to come up with ways to keep entertained and pass the time, there are also other things you can do to make your long road trip as comfortable as possible. 

• Stay hydrated . Dehydration will make you feel more tired, which you definitely don’t want if you’re the driver. Drinking more water may have to stop more often, but walking about a bit regularly will help as well. 
• Pack plenty of snacks.  What’s a road trip without  road trip snacks ? 
• Wear comfortable clothing.  
• Run Google Maps  for directions even if you know your route. Google Maps will alert you to slowdowns, and accidents and provide detour routes for you on the fly to help get you to your destination with less hassle.

Cooler —Keep your lunch, snacks, and drinks cool with a cooler like this one you can buy on Amazon . 

Device charger car adapter —part of keeping safe on the road is making sure that your phone is fully charged in case of emergencies. A car charger adapter can keep two devices going ( buy on Amazon ) .

Water bottle —I love my Super Sparrow lightweight sports bottle ( buy on Amazon ). It holds enough water to keep you hydrated on your trip. 

Phone holder device —a hands-free device is great to have especially if you’re road tripping alone. You can buy it on Amazon .

Jumper Cable —Don’t let a dead battery keep you from your road trip. Keep jumper cables ( find them on Amazon ) with you at all times. Or purchase a jump starter box ( buy on Amazon ) and restart your battery safely by yourself. 

AAA membership —unfortunately cars break down sometimes, and it’s great to have something like AAA so you know you can get roadside assistance when you need it. 

Polarized sunglasses —squinting into the sun contributes to fatigue, so a pair of polarized sunglasses can help.  Check them out on Amazon .

First aid kit —for minor scrapes and such. You can make one yourself with basic things from home like band-aids and antiseptic. Or purchase a small kit designed for travel  like this one on Amazon . 

Spare plastic bags for trash —you don’t need to purchase anything. Leftover grocery shopping bags work great. 

Final thoughts on things to do on a long road trip  

No matter what your destination, your road trip is sure to be more enjoyable if you plan ahead. Bring plenty of entertainment with you and enough food so that you can eat on the go if you wish.  

Create an ultimate road trip playlist beforehand as well; nothing breaks up boredom faster than good music! Finally, don’t forget about conversation topics. Sometimes silence isn’t golden when driving long distances. 

With these simple tips, hopefully, you’ll feel refreshed and energized by your journey’s end instead of exhausted from all the time spent in the car.

You made a good point when you mentioned that it could be a good idea to wear a mask while you are trying to sleep on a car ride. A friend of mine is going to be going on a long bus charter in a couple of weeks. I would imagine that his trip is going to be during the day, so he might want to bring a mask so that the sun doesn’t shine in his eyes.

Sometimes when people picture cross country road trips they might think of a tired family packed into a station wagon sporadically chanting, “are we there yet?” while driving endlessly from home to their destination. But road trips are anything but that.

Road trips are an amazing way to see the country, even if you’re just seeing a small part of it. There is no better vacation freedom than packing up your car, going where you want to go, and stopping where you want to stop. And, if you’re bringing along friends: even better.

Taking a road trip with friends makes for a fun vacation and epic adventure. It allows you to spend more time with the person or people who mean the world to you, create a lasting memory, and get plenty of Instagram photos along the way.

I’m not saying here don’t take a road trip with friends. Actually, quite the opposite. Traveling with friends can be an amazing, fun, memorable adventure. But only if you’re prepared. Here are our tips to make sure your best friends road trip is the best it can be.

Make Sure You’re on the Same Page

When taking a road trip with friends it is vital to have a conversation beforehand and make sure everyone is on the same page before you decide to journey together. Even best friends might have different travel styles. One person might be a strict planner while the other a more go-with-the-flow type. One person might be a night owl and the other an early bird with an early (and loud) morning alarm. One person might love living off the land and camping while the other might only order room service in five-star hotels.

Before making any concrete decisions make sure you and your friends are road trip compatible. There should always be room for everyone to compromise a little, but if your ideas on how to travel are wildly different it might be a better idea to travel apart. Here are some things to make sure you discuss beforehand:

• Who is coming on the road trip?
• How early or late do you want to start your day?
• Whose car are you taking?
• Who will be driving? Will you take turns? How often will you switch?
• What is your budget?
• What level of accommodation are you comfortable with?
• Are you OK sharing a bed and/or room?
• Do you prefer air conditioner or open windows in the car?
• What types of stops do you want to make?
• How often will you stop?

Make a Road Trip Route, Itinerary, and Plan

When traveling with other people it is always a good idea to have a plan. It doesn’t have to be an iron-clad itinerary no one is allowed to stray from. In fact, you should definitely plan to be at least a little flexible. But, with multiple opinions, tastes, and travel styles, figuring out your road trip route and itinerary before leaving will allow you to plan a trip with input from everyone in the car and agree on stops beforehand.

Decide How You’re Going to Pay and Make a Spending Spreadsheet

With road trips come lots of expenses: hotel bookings, gas, national park admissions, snacks. When traveling with friends it’s important to determine how you’re going to be paying for everything you need to pay for. You want to be fair to everyone and make sure everyone is paying equally. Sometimes one person will put everything on her credit card and others will Venmo that person their share. Sometimes everyone will pay for a different things until it balances out. There is no right or wrong answer, you just want to make sure that everyone on your road trip agrees to a method. No matter what you decide it’s a good idea to start a spending spreadsheet to track those expenses so you can make sure everyone paid their fair share.

Assign Roles

It isn’t necessary for everyone to take on roles, but sometimes it just makes sense. If one person is driving, another should be in charge of music. If one person is the impeccably organized planner in charge of keeping the itinerary on track, another should be in charge of sandwiches and snacks . Not everyone has to have a specific role, but you want to make sure one person isn’t booking all the hotels, driving, making the route, AND bringing the Cheez-Its.

Set Boundaries

While a roadtrip with friends will often come with a lot of compromise, it is also OK to set boundaries. If you haven’t driven since 2010 and aren’t comfortable driving someone else’s car, say no. If you’re an introvert like me and need some alone time at the end of a long day in the car, tell your friends you need to go hang out by yourself for a bit. Establishing boundaries is one of the most important road trip rules for friends.

Who says car rides are boring? Especially when you’re traveling with friends. You’re sure to have an amazing adventure that is fun on its own. Record the Journey

Roadtripping with your friends will be an experience you will never want to forget. So be sure to record the journey. Take a Hike

After a long day of driving and stopping at roadside attractions and other fun road trip stops, you deserve a little time to relax! Grab your bathing suits and go hang out by the hotel pool.

Listen to a Podcast

If you want to take a break from blasting tunes, try listening to a podcast in the car. If you all are addicted to the same true crime podcast, play the latest episodes. Or, have everyone in the car pick their favorite and take turns sharing.

Put Away Your Phones

For at least part of your road trip, have everyone put away their phones. It is easy to get distracted by social media or start texting with friends who are back at home. But spend some time with your full attention on each other, the amazing stops you’re making, and the road.

Have you ever tried Rocky Mountain Oysters? Here’s a hint: they aint oysters. Make a pact to taste test local delicacies wherever you go. Sure, some might be weird (or seemingly gross) but you might just find your new favorite cuisine!

Hot Springs are often an overlooked road trip stop . But they are a super fun road trip stop, especially for a group of friends. Relax in a scalding hot pool while, often, overlooking nature, and give your weary muscles a break after being cooped up in a car.

Whether you love the mountains, want to drive above the clouds, or cruise over the ocean, there’s a road trip for you. Here are 21 of the best road trips in the United States. Let us know in the comments below if there are more we should add to the list.

1. Pacific Coast Highway →

Location:  California    |    Distance:  123 Miles

Enjoy the endless views of the ocean and drive through some of the best beach towns on California’s Route 1. Don’t forget to stop at Hearst Castle, spend some time in  Big Sur   (one of our favorite places in the US), and Glass Beach in Fort Bragg.

Local Tip: Check the news to see if there are any big events occurring. We’ve done this road trip a handful of times with no issues, but the last time we went, there was a bike race, and we were stuck in traffic for hours.

2. Historic Route 66

Location:  Illinois to  California    |    Distance:  2,451 Miles

Route 66 is one of the most iconic drives in America. The best stretch of this highway runs from the  Grand Canyon  to the Colorado River. To dive into the history, visit the Route 66 Association Hall of Fame & Museum in Pontiac, Illinois.

Local Tip: Unfortunately they’ve painted over most of the Route 66 signs on the road because it was dangerous for people to try to take photos with it. Apparently, some still exist, but we haven’t found them yet.

3. Overseas Highway

Location:   Florida    |    Distance:  120 Miles

We just came back from a trip to the Keys and ended up driving the Overseas Highway. It was unbelievably beautiful.

Unlike any other drive in the country, this route takes you on bridges right over the ocean. It gives you the sensation of floating over the water. Plus, the  Florida Keys  ain’t a bad destination either.

4. Million Dollar Highway (San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway)

L ocation:  Colorado    |    Distance:  305 Miles

Twist and turn through the winding roads between two historic gold-mining towns. Take in the amazing views and don’t forget to take deep breaths as you’ll be over two miles above sea level.

5. Columbia River Scenic Highway →

L ocation:  Oregon    |    Distance:  75 Miles

See the amazing Columbia Gorge on a highway built purely for scenery. This drive gives you views of waterfalls and mountains, and there are plenty of pull-offs. Here are  21 best hikes in the Columbia River Gorge from short and easy day hikes to multi-day backpacking trips .

Local Tip: Part of the charm of this area is the rainy weather. Come prepared with  solid waterproof boots  and a  raincoat  ; the hikes are magical.

6. Skyline Drive

L ocation:  Virginia    |    Distance:  105 Miles

This scenic drive takes you along the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park. Drive through the Appalachians and stop to enjoy any of the 75 overlooks.

7. Hana Highway (Road to Hana) →

L ocation:  Maui, Hawaii   |    Distance:  51.1 Miles

Explore the coastlines of Maui along the Hana Highway. You’ll find black sand beaches, waterfalls, jungles, and roadside stands. Don’t forget to bring your bathing suit!

8. Black RIver Scenic Byway

L ocation:  Michigan    |    Distance:  11 Miles

Tucked away in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, the Black River Scenic Byway has much to offer in a short distance. Pass by waterfalls and dense forests as you follow the river to the lakeshore.

9. The Loneliest Road in America (HWY 50) →

L ocation:  Nevada    |    Distance:  408 Miles

Named for the largely uninhabited region that you drive through, explore mining camps, cross mountain ranges, and stop in small cafes. Don’t forget to look up at the stars at night for some of the most spectacular views.

10. Route 12

L ocation:  Utah    |    Distance:  124 Miles

Drive through some of the most breathtaking views and explore Capitol Reef National Park and  Bryce Canyon National Park . You can even stop in  Boulder Mountain for a night’s stay  and a great meal.

11. Kancamagus Highway

L ocation:  New Hampshire    |    Distance:  34.5 Miles

Make a trip down this highway in the fall to get some of the best fall foliage views. Enjoy the crisp breeze with your windows down and take in all the colors of the leaves.

The first time we did this drive, we missed the peak of the fall foliage by one day. The rain and wind the day before we arrived took out most of the leaves.

12. THe High Road to Taos

L ocation:  New Mexico    |    Distance:  56 Miles

This scenic, winding road takes you through deserts, mountains, forests, and ancient Indian pueblos. You’ll find beautiful wildflower meadows and there are art galleries scattered throughout the drive. You can also take the Low Road through the valleys on the way back.

13. Beartooth Highway

L ocation:  Montana and Wyoming    |    Distance:  68 Miles

Drive through southwest Montana and northwest Wyoming with breathtaking views of the Absoroka and Beartooth Mountains. You’ll drive by glacial lakes, forests, waterfalls, and wildlife. To top it off, you end at the entrance to  Yellowstone National Park .

14. Highway 2

L ocation:  Nebraska    |    Distance:  200 Miles

See the Great Plains of Nebraska and the rolling sandhills that makeup nearly one-fourth of the state. You’ll also see huge farmlands, marshes, and winding rivers. Certain times of the year will bring huge numbers of migrating birds too.

15. ROute 6

L ocation:  Massachusetts    |    Distance:  117 Miles

Explore the Cape Cod area on this scenic drive. Drive through forests, colonial villages, and tidal pools, and explore the harbor.

16. Park Loop Road →

L ocation:  Maine    |    Distance:  27 Miles

This coastal drive gives you views of Acadia National Park and is one of the best places for spotting bald eagles and peregrine. You’ll get amazing views from above but also from the harbor below.

17. Going to the Sun Road →

L ocation:  Montana    |    Distance:  50 Miles

This drive through Glacier National Park gives you views of mountain peaks and alpine lakes while having the least negative impact on the delicate environment.

Amazing link – thank you! But you missed one of the top 5 – Rocky Mountain National Park – the Great Divide. That is breathtaking! I’ve been to many of the above listed destinations and believe Colorado’s Eastern as well as the Western (the Million Dollar Highway between Ouray and Silverton) slopes have much to offer.

We have been fortunate to have driven on half of these. Route 12 in Utah and Beartooth stand out. And the Tail of the Dragon was sheer fun. But the Going to the Sun Road was in my opinion, the most scenic, plus fun to drive and in the middle of my favorite National Park. Hope to get back there some day

There are many ways to do a cross-country road trip in the USA, but these two itineraries will take you through some truly iconic American places.

1. Chicago to Los Angeles: A Whiskey Road Trip on Route 66

It doesn’t get more American than a 2,000-mile drive along the entirety of Route 66. There are endless ways to take this legendary trip (including an EV version —but to take your cross-country road trip to the next level, we recommend exploring another American pastime: whiskey.

Starting in Chicago and ending in L.A., you’ll stop by some of the leading craft distilleries in the United States, like Few Spirits in Chicago, Still 630 in St. Louis, and Red Fork Distillery in Tulsa. 2. Bangor, Maine, to Seattle, Washington: The Great Northern on U.S. Route 2

18. Maine’s “Lobster Trail”: Travel Route 1 Along the Coast

21. The Florida Keys: An Island-Hopping Getaway

23. Arecibo to Condado, Puerto Rico: A Lesser-Known Side of a Well-Loved Island

In the minds of many, trips to Puerto Rico bring images of stunning beaches , delicious foods , and maybe a bioluminescent bay or two . But there’s plenty of history to be found here, too, as Puerto Rico was home to an Indigenous population known as the Taino, a heritage many Puerto Ricans embrace. Summer road trips with teens, tweens & kids can be a lot of fun as long as you have some games & activities planned! Here are 36 great ideas to keep everyone entertained on the long drive.

No matter how old your kids are a road trip can be a fun and bonding experience for every family member! If you plan ahead and are prepared for some inevitable boredom along the way. Planning a road trip ahead of time is crucial! Teens, Tweens and kids can all enjoy these road trip activities and games below.

Without games and activities, a long road trip can be extremely boring. This is especially true for kids, who may not be able to read or watch movies for hours on end.

Making sure to bring along a variety of travel games and amazing road trip activities to keep the whole family occupied and happy will save you from any headaches on a long trip!

Whether your road trip is hours long or kinda short these games and activities will work for you. Each game can last anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour long. Using a point system or setting a number of rounds to be played will help lengthen the time.

Best Games for Younger Children

This classic game is perfect for little ones on a long family road trip. One person starts by saying “I spy with my little eye something that is (color, shape, etc.)” and then everyone takes turns trying to guess what it is.

The License Plate Game:

See how many different license plates from different states you can spot on your road trip. You can also make it a competition to see who can spot the most.

The ABC Game:

Start with A and take turns naming things in alphabetical order. This is a great way to help little ones learn their ABCs and see fun things while on the road.

Once Upon a Time:

One person starts by saying “Once upon a time there was a…” and then the next person has to continue the story. This is a great way to spark your child’s imagination and get them telling stories on the long drive. This will make your family road trip a lot more interesting!

Name that Tune:

Young kids have a great time playing this game! One person hums a tune and the others have to guess what song it is. If you children are much younger you could even hum nursery rhymes they might be familiar with. Plus, you now have music on your road trip!

I’m going on a picnic:

This game is great for kids of all ages. One person starts by saying “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing…” and then the next person has to name something that begins with the last letter of the previous item. For example, if someone says “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing an apple,” the next person could say “I’m going on a picnic and I’m bringing an egg.”

The Rhyming Game:

This game is perfect for kids who are just learning to read or are starting to learn about rhyming words. One person starts by saying a word and the next person has to say a word that rhymes with it.

The Animal Game:

This game is perfect for kids who love animals. One person starts by saying the name of an animal and the next person has to name an animal that begins with the last letter of the previous animal. For example, if someone says “lion,” the next person could say “narwhal.”

The Counting Game:

This game is great for kids who are just learning to count. One person starts by saying a number and the next person has to say the next number in sequence. This is a perfect way to get your kids learning on a road trip without them even knowing it!

Classic Telephone Game:

The first player starts by whispering a phrase or sentence into the next player’s ear. The next person then whispers what they heard to the next person and so on. The last person then says out loud what they heard, which is usually very different from the original phrase or sentence. This game always guarantees a great time!

Find that Place:

This road trip game is lots of fun! One person starts by saying “I’m looking for a place that is…” and then the next person has to name a place that meets the criteria. For example, if someone says “I’m looking for a place that is cold,” the next person could say “Antarctica.”

Fast Food Find:

Each person names a fast food restaurant chain before you begin. Once you say start you will look or the fast food place you chose and each person gets 1 point for every time they see it on the drive. Winner is the one that has the most points at the end of road trip. This is great for a long car trip.

20 Questions:

One person thinks of an object, person, place, or thing and the others take turns asking up to 20 questions to try and figure out what it is.

Two Truths and a Lie:

Each person takes a turn telling three stories about themselves, two of which are true and one of which is a lie. The others then have to guess which story is the lie.

The Scavenger Hunt Game:

One person makes a list of things to look for along the way and everyone tries to spot them. The first person to find all the items on the list wins. Here are some pre made scavenger hunts for the road too!

The Countdown Game:

Choose a category (ie. animals, countries, brands, etc.) and then take turns naming something from that category in alphabetical order. The Never Have I Ever Game:

Everyone starts with some set amount of money. Oftentimes using pennies is enough to make the game fun. Next, take turns making statements about things you have never done. For example, “never have I ever been to Europe.” If someone has done the thing you say, they have to give you one penny. once you lose your money you are out. Winner takes all the money

The Car Bingo Game:

Each person has a bingo card with different objects, people, or things that can be seen on a road trip. For example, a license plate from Texas, a truck, a cow, etc. The first person to get bingo wins.

The Word Association Game:

One person says a word and the next person has to say a word in response that is associated with the first word. For example, if the first word is “summer,” the next person could say “vacation.” Keep going until someone can not think of a word. Set a time limit for answering like 10 seconds.

Punch Bug (or Slap Bug):

Every time you see a VW Beetle, you punch the person next to you. Loser is the person who gets punched the most. Before playing this you need to be certain your teens are old enough to punch lightly as to not start a fight or any whining and complaining.

I Went to the Store:

One person starts by saying “I went to the store and bought a (item).” The next person then has to say “I went to the store and bought a (item)” and so on, adding on to the list of items. The first person to mess up or take too long loses.

Teens and Tweens keeping a journal of their road trip

Keeping a journal of all the memories and experiences from your trip can be a great way to keep kids entertained. It’s also a great way to document all the interesting stops you saw along the way. This can be a great thing to look back on later to remember your travel experience.

A journal entry could look like this,

“My road trip is going great! I’ve been playing a ton of card games with my brothers and sisters, and we’ve been listening to a lot of music and audiobooks. We’ve also seen some amazing sights along the way. Yesterday, we saw this huge waterfall, and today we’re in the middle of this huge desert.”

7 Day New England Road Trip Itinerary for Summer or Fall (With 5 & 10 Day Options)

Trying to plan a 7 day New England road trip itinerary that takes you across the best of the Northeast?

Our New England itinerary starts in Rhode Island and finishes off in the heart of Vermont, and includes a mix of city life, nature, active pursuits, and delicious food!

Throughout, you will find tips so you can customize it to a shorter 5-day trip or a longer 10-day trip.

Whether you are traveling with kids over the summer or doing a romantic New England fall foliage trip , this is filled to the brim with fun things to do on the East Coast.

• States Visited: Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont, plus Quebec and Montreal.

How We Set Up This New England Road Trip itinerary

New England is home to some of the most beautiful drives in the US. You could do multiple variations of a 7 day New England itinerary.

On this trip, we started and ended in Providence, Rhode Island.

We have also done New England Road trips from Boston to Cape Cod and Newport Rhode, Island, and a New England fall foliage road trip around Western Massachusetts.

On the 7 day New England Road Trip below, we have included two options for day one so you can start in Providence or Boston. Both are great choices.

If you only have 5 days in New England , you can drop the portion in Canada to save time.

If you are doing a New England Fall Road Trip , you will want to swap out Block Island and add more time in New Hampshire.

Finally, if you can do a 10-Day New England Road Trip Itinerary , you’ll be able to do it all!

We’ve tried to make it easy for you to pick and choose so that you can plan for the duration you want and the New England states you want to visit. Each day has hotel options and the best activities too.

7 Day New England Road Trip Itinerary For Summer or Fall

This New England itinerary was designed to see the diverse landscapes, cities, and towns that this region has to offer. So, expect a mix of urban, countryside, coastal, and mountain experiences.

While this northeast road trip is done in a true road-tripping style where you spend one night in every place, you can cover less distance and spend more time getting to know each place.

Day 1: Arrive in Providence and Do a Block Island Day Trip (Drive time 1.5 hours plus ferry)

Starting from Providence Airport, head straight to the Block Island Ferry in Point Judith, a 45-minute drive. The fast Block Island ferry is an easy, 1-hour trip and it’s nice to get out on the water.

With gorgeous beaches, historic lighthouses, nature walks, and a cute downtown, Block Island, also known as New Shoreham, is one of the most charming places to visit during summer in Rhode Island.

It also happens to be the smallest town in the smallest state!

The best way to explore Block Island is by renting bikes. Island Moped and Bike Rental is right across from the ferry port. Then you can cycle around to see everything that Block Island has to offer.

Head to the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge for one of the most unique and beautiful places on the island or go sailing or kayaking on the Great Salt Pond for more adventure.

In reality, we spent one night and two days on Block Island. Here are the best 12 things to do on Block Island including where to eat and stay.

For the purposes of a 7-Day New England itinerary, you can do a Block Island day trip and spend the night back in Providence. If you have enough time, stay overnight and add an extra day to your trip.

Alternate Day 1: Boston, Massachusetts (Drive time 1 hour)

Another great place to start and end a one week New England itinerary is Boston. We’ve had a few great East Coast trips with the kids and highly recommend Boston as a great family destination.

Boston is a rather compact city packed full of history and things to do for families or couples. One of the best things to do in Boston is follow the Freedom Trail on your own or by booking a tour guide (highly recommended).

This trail goes to the most historic places in Boston, from the Old State House, where the Declaration of Independence was first read, to Paul Revere’s medieval-style house.

Have fun shopping on Newberry Street and at Faneuil Hall. Then visit Boston Public Garden where you can ride the historic swan boats. A Duck Boat City Tour was a huge hit with our kids and they loved the New England Aquarium .

• Activities : Freedom Trail: Small Group Tour or Boston Duck Boat City Tour with Charles River Cruise

Day 2: Portland, Maine (Drive time 1.75 hours)

Stop 1: Portsmouth, New Hampshire

Leave Boston early and stop in Portsmouth, New Hampshire for breakfast at The Friendly Toast . Then walk around the cute downtown and Portsmouth Clock Tower square.

Stop 2: Kennebunkport, Maine

Another way to break up the drive is to stop in Kennebunkport . The highlight in Kennebunkport is the beach, and you can also catch a sneak peek of the Bush Compound .

Portland, Maine

When you arrive in Portland, take a Guided Portland City and Lighthouse Tour or visit Downton Portland on your own (don’t miss the Portland Museum of Art ), and drive out to see the Portland Head Light – one of the best lighthouses in Maine.

We opted to experience an extraordinarily beautiful day on the Casco Bay on the Lucky Catch Cruise , a highlight of our New England road trip.

In addition to learning everything there is to know about lobstering, we saw four lighthouses, including the Portland Head Light, the Casco Bay islands, and the historic Old Port district.

We had a seafood lunch at DiMillo’s On the Water. Since Portland has a great food scene, you might prefer to try one of the hot spots like Hot Suppa , Twelve , or Bar Futo .

• Activities : Portland City and Lighthouse Tour or Lucky Catch Cruise

Which reminds us, you have to try a lobster roll in Maine! We actually stayed in Freeport for the night, 20 minutes outside of Portland and had lobster Rolls for dinner at the Harraseeket Lunch and Lobster Company .

If you are driving with kids, stop at the LL Bean Store in Freeport. They have fun interactive displays, and the store is massive if you need any gear.

Day 3: Bar Harbor & Acadia National Park

The drive from Portland to Bar Harbor takes 3 hours. Break it up with a stop for lunch in Camden. It takes 1.75 hours to get there and then 1.75 from Camden to Bar Harbor. If you stay in Freeport, knock 20 minutes off these times.

Stop 1: Camden, Maine

Camden is one of the loveliest seaside towns in New England. It has a laid-back feel and a super charming downtown with delectable restaurants and boutiques.

We had the famous blueberry pancakes at Marriner’s Restaurant for breakfast. For a delicious seafood lunch overlooking the bay, try The Waterfront . Then walk around and check out a few shops before heading to Bar Harbor.

If you want to stay overnight in Camden, there are fantastic restaurants for dinner like Franny’s Bistro or 40 Paper and you’ll have time for a Windjammer Classic Sail on Penobscot Bay or the Mount Battie hike in Camden Hills State Park .

Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park

Bar Harbor is the gateway to the mountains and cliffs of Acadia National Park, one of the most beautiful places in New England and a must-see on a Boston to Maine road trip.

Sunrise at Cadillac Mountain is the top thing to do in Acadia National Park , when the weather cooperates. For us, it was rainy for sunrise but cleared up before noon, so we were able to enjoy the spectacular vistas.

This area is great for kids because the mountain is very gently sloping and they can run all over.

Make sure to stop at Jordan Pond House on the Park Loop Road. They have delicious popovers and a beautiful setting outside on the lawn overlooking a very scenic lake with small Maine wild blueberries growing everywhere.

Our final adventure of the day was rock climbing with Atlantic Climbing School at the Otter Cliffs . It was our first time and our guide helped all four of us successfully get to the top. It was a blast!

For dinner, Side Street Cafe has Burgers, sandwiches, salads, and of course lobster rolls. Then head to CJ’s Big Dipper for a blueberry and vanilla swirl soft serve ice cream. They have vegan options too.

• Hotel: Sand Bar Cottage Inn (9.3) or Holiday Inn Bar Harbor Regency Hotel  (7.7) for the big pool.
• Activities : Cadillac Mountain, Jordan Pond, or Rock Climbing

Day 4: Kennebec River, Maine River Rafting (Drive time 2.75 hours)

As you leave the quaint streets of Bar Harbor, the next part of the journey takes you through the heart of small-town USA, where main streets are lined with historic buildings and mom-and-pop shops exude local charm.

We wanted to go to Quebec City, but the drive from Bar Harbor is 5.5 hours. With a little research, we found a hidden gem in the heart of Maine where the Kennebec River and Dead River meet. The area is called The Forks.

To get there, you will traverse the scenic route of Highway 201 through Maine’s countryside to reach The Forks, where adventure awaits, and you can experience the thrill of whitewater rafting on the Kennebec River.

Kennebec River Rafting

We chose Crab Apple Whitewater for our rafting excursion. They were very professional. The Class III and IV rapids were much more vigorous than our other experiences, but super fun and fine with the kids.

The guides take you to the bottom of the Harris Station Dam where the daily water release provides a consistently thrilling ride on the Kennebec River. We all had smiles plastered on our faces for a full hour of non-stop action.

The second half of the trip was floating down a calmer part of the river and enjoying our magnificent surroundings on a perfect sun-filled day.

At the end of the rafting, the Crab Apple team made a delicious barbecue lunch followed by a highlight reel of the trip.

Since rafting is only a half-day excursion, the staff told us about a terrific hike to Moxie Falls , one of Maine’s tallest waterfalls. It’s an easy and beautiful hike.

What started as a way to break up a 5.5-hour drive turned out to be a highlight of our New England Road Trip! If you do this trip and don’t want to go to Canada, we still recommend Maine river rafting on the Kennebec.

• Activities : Kennebec River Rafting, Hiking to Moxie Falls

Day 5: Quebec City, Canada (Drive time 2.5 hours)

With a very European feel, Quebec City has a charm to it that makes you feel like you could amble around the streets and sit in sidewalk cafes for hours.

We were only here for one day but ended up walking around for hours checking out the city. The highlights included Château Frontenac , Dufferin Terrace , Place Royale with the mural of Quebecers, and the Funiculaire du Vieux-Québec.

From an adult point of view, we also loved the stunning interior of the Basilica Cathedral Notre-Dame de Québec and the view of Rue du Petit Champlain from the Breakneck Steps.

The Old Port has a vibrant atmosphere with unique boutiques and lots of delectable restaurants. The delicious farm-to-table restaurant Chez Muffy is a must.

We also enjoyed Paillard’s coffee and pastries and the Beef and bacon poutine from La Souche Microbrasserie. Our kids were mesmerized by the display of candy at Bec et Bonbon.

Day 6: Montreal to Burlington, Vermont (Drive time 4.5 hours)

We had to work one long drive day into our East Coast road trip route. It’s a 4-hour drive from Quebec City to Burlington, Vermont, so we broke up the drive with a pit stop for lunch in Montreal.

In Montreal, we only stayed long enough for a walk down the cobbled streets of  Old Montreal  and lunch at Jardin Nelson. If you have enough time, check out the trendy  Mile End  neighborhood and stay overnight at Hôtel William Gray .

From there, head for Burlington to begin the final stretch of your 7-day New England road trip itinerary. 

In Downtown Burlington, the big draws are  Lake Champlain  with Waterfront Park and the  Burlington Bike Path , and the  Church Street Marketplace , a pedestrian street with restaurants, shops, entertainment, and plenty of people watching.

We wanted to do the  Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour . Honestly, who wouldn’t want to drive hours out of your way for ice cream? We thoroughly enjoyed the tour, the flavor graveyard, and our free sample of Late Night Snack.

• Hotel: Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain (7.5)
• Activities : Old Montreal Walking Tour and Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour

Day 7: Vermont (Drive time 2.5 hours)

Vermont is one of the most scenic destinations for a New England road trip in fall, but it’s also stunning in summer and has so many options if you

We kicked the day off early at Shelburne Farms , an educational working farm in Vermont. We chased around chickens, milked a cow, saw the cheese-making process in action, and bought maple syrup.

Surprisingly, it was a hit for the whole family and I was worried because it seemed more like a little kid activity than something good for teens.

Then, we hit Dorset Marble Quarry , the oldes in the US from 1785, where my husband and the boys dared each other from one cliff jump to the next. There are cliffs at various heights that are great for all ages.

Hildene was next, where even history-averse kids are intrigued by the old Lincoln family artifacts and the sprawling gardens. Then the cool Chiselville Covered Bridge was Vermont picture perfect.

We wrapped up the day staying at Hill Farm Inn where they have animals you can feed, a swimming pool, big grassy lawns for a picnic or sitting by the fire, and a lounge area with a pool table.

• Activities : Shelburne Farms, Dorset Marble Quarry, and Hildene

Day 8: Vermont to Providence or Boston (Drive time 2.5 hours)

The last day had a 3 hour drive back to the airport. It’s almost the same drive time whether you go to Boston or Providence. Since we knew we had a lot of car time, we had a last hurrah at Bromley Mountain Adventure Park .

We had a blast ziplining and riding the alpine slide. The kids also hit the waterslide, a bungee trampoline, and played a round of mini golf. It was the perfect way to let loose before a long drive..

You’d think all of this adventure would be enough, but the one thing we didn’t have time for was kayaking and tubing on the Battenkill River . We could have easily used an extra day in Vermont.

How many Days do You Need for a New England Road Trip?

You will see that this New England tour can be tweaked to fit either a 5 day (more of a Boston to Maine road trip) or 10 day New England trip that adds more adventure and scenery – especially if you’re visiting in fall.

This entirely depends on how much time you have. Easily, you could spend a month driving around this region. But, this New England road trip for 7 days will take you to the best places and things to do in the region in just a week.

How to Make This a 10 Day New England Road Trip Itinerary

If you have more time for your trip, a 10-day New England itinerary will allow you to go at a slower pace or add on some amazing destinations like White Mountain National Forest in New Hampshire – especially if it’s a fall road trip.

We did two separate one week New England road trips.

Our trip was in summer so we visited Newport, RI to do the famous Cliff Walks that combine ocean vistas and historic mansions into a 3.5 mile recreational walk. Then we spent 2 days on Block Island .

It’s really easy to scale up this exact itinerary by starting with an overnight in Block Island and adding Boston instead of doing one or the other. Then just add one more day wherever you want.

I personally would add an overnight in Montreal. An extra day in Vermont or the White Mountains of New Hampshire, where you can go hiking or ballooning, would be amazing too, especially for fall foliage.

How to Make This a 5 Day New England Road Trip Itinerary

If you don’t have time for a 7 day New England tour, a 5 day trip will still allow you to see plenty of nature sites, cities, and charming towns.

To do this as a 5-day New England road trip, skip Quebec and Montreal. You might also want to skip Acadia National Park because it’s a long drive, albeit worth the trip.

Here are two 5-Day New England Road Trip Itinerary Ideas:

Boston, Cape Cod, & Newport

• Day 1: Boston
• Day 2: Boston
• Day 3: Cape Cod
• Day 4: Newport, Rhode Island
• Day 5: Block Island

Boston, Maine, New Hampshire, & Vermont

• Day 2: Portland, Maine
• Day 3: New Hampshire’s White Mountains and Kancamagus Highway
• Day 4: Burlington
• Day 5: Green Mountains, Vermont

Best Time to Visit New England

May through October are the best months to visit New England. The warm days of summer, although humid, invite you to hike, swim along the coastline, take boat rides, and enjoy the outdoors.

Late spring is a great time to see wildflowers and the region bursting with a lively atmosphere while the weather isn’t too hot.

Fall road trips in New England are highly recommended to see stunning foliage. The northeast is home to some of the best fall views in the world.

Tips for a New England Road Trip with Kids

When we decided to take a trip to the East Coast, we thought a New England road trip would be a great way to sample all that the area has to offer.

The only issue was how to keep the kids to be happy in a car. That’s a tall order for children who say, “Are we there yet?” after only 30 minutes across town.

1. How to Get The Best Deal

When road-tripping with a full family, flying into a city that has good flights and rental car deals , AND good hotel prices , can save you a lot of money. Look at all three variables for the perfect starting point.

For this trip, we had a choice of multiple airports. Skyscanner is great for finding flight deals.

I wanted a small SUV since we would be in the car for so many days. Check prices on Discover Cars . We’ve gotten the best deals recently through them.

Providence had great hotel deals by the airport, which we needed because the flight we chose landed at 11:30 pm. So, we decided our New England tour would begin and end there.

2. Plan a manageable driving route.

Since we had time for a 10-day New England road trip and wanted to include Canada, we needed to change locations every day. My goal was to keep drives between 1-3 hours.

Knowing those were my parameters, I looked for things to do or places to stop that fit within those guidelines.

3. Know Your Audience

Fun New England activities were the key to keeping our travelers happy. Rock climbing, river rafting, and lobstering were great outlets for all their energy.

If you have kids that have a hard time sitting still, make stops where they can move their bodies. With kids who like a slower pace, a day at the beach might be more fun. For kids that love animals, stop at a farm.

4. Include Your Kids in the Planning Process

With group road trips, you’ve got to make compromises. Plan to see and do things that keep everyone interested, including YOU, instead of just focusing on the kids.

Our New England tour was 2 parents and two boys, 11 and 15 years old. Traveling with an 11-year old is easy as long as you don’t make them sit in the car too long and you do kid-oriented stuff.

15-year-olds can be hard to please and moody. It’s good to include them in the planning process because they are very capable of picking things that they would like to see or do.

5. Download audiobooks

I have never enjoyed being in a car so much! We took one of our son’s required summer reading books and killed two birds with one stone. You can download your first digital book for free on audible.com with a trial membership.

If not audiobooks, look for podcasts that fit a theme your family loves, whether it be science, history, pop culture, or travel. Or just make sure everyone has headphones and can do their own thing.

Much of present-day Interstate 40 runs along Historic Route 66; however, where Route 66 turned northeast, Interstate 40 continues east, running through Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina.

Connecting the East Coast and West Coast, I-40 takes travelers from Barstow, California, to Wilmington, North Carolina, passing through major cities such as Flagstaff, Albuquerque, Little Rock, Memphis, and Nashville.

Barstow, California, United States

Barstow is a small town that oozes kitschy Historic Route 66 vibes. Check out the town's Route 66 Mother Road Museum or the Western American Rail Road Museum. Stock up on snacks and souvenirs at Barstow Station, a massive rest stop.

36600 Ghost Town Road, Yermo, CA, US

Calico Ghost Town

Ghost towns are dotted all across the west, and Calico is one of the cutest. Though it's been well-preserved, it is now more of a tourist attraction than an authentic historic stop. You'll find museums, shops, restaurants, train rides, and restored buildings. There's even a campground, if you're looking for a place to stay the night.

Mojave National Preserve

For a taste of the desert landscape you've been driving through on I-40, stop at the Mojave National Preserve. Scrubby plants, multicolored rocks, and stark, stony earth provide a unique view. The Mojave is especially breathtaking at sunset and sunrise. If you plan on hiking here, remember to be careful of the heat and lack of shade.

Cool Springs Gas Station

Don't expect to top off your tank here—the gas pumps, while beautifully restored, don't actually work. However, a pit stop at Cool Springs Gas Station is worthwhile because it's an authentic Route 66 icon. This once-abandoned gem of the Mother Road now includes a museum and souvenir shop.

Flagstaff, Arizona, United States

Surrounded by National Forests and U.S. Forest Service Wilderness Areas, Flagstaff is an oasis of natural beauty that also provides the pleasures of a big city. Check out the Museum of Northern Arizona during the day and the Lowell Observatory come nightfall. Grab lunch or dinner at Diablo Burger, which is known for its fresh, locally-grown ingredients. If you're in search of a place to stay in Flagstaff, the city provides unique options. Petrified Forest National Park

Like Historic Route 66, I-40 cuts right through Petrified Forest National Park, which features impressive hikes and scenic viewpoints. The park is named for its glittering petrified wood, made from fossilized redwood trees that lived over 225 million years ago. Tour the Rainbow Forest, the Crystal Forest, and the Agate House, or hike the Blue Mesa Trail for views of the Painted Desert.

Eventually, I-40 will take you to Albuquerque. Famous for its balloon festival and association with the TV show Breaking Bad , this town has artsy Southwestern charm. Visit the National Museum of Nuclear Science and History, grab a bite to eat at Perea's New Mexican Restaurant, and tuck in for the night at the Nativo Lodge. Blue Hole of Santa Rosa

If you're looking for a place to cool off while driving through the desert, then you won't find a better spot than the Blue Hole of Santa Rosa. The crystal-clear, deeply blue water is quite refreshing. Jump off the rocks into the pool, scuba dive to the bottom, or just dip your toes in and soak up the natural beauty of the setting.

The whole town of Tucumcari is pure retro bliss, but the crown jewel of the community might be Tee Pee Curios. Amarillo is home to the iconic folk art attraction known as Cadillac Ranch. The interactive nature adds to the fun—you can add your own graffiti to the row of Cadillacs. Bring your own paint—just be sure to take your trash with you when you go.

Amarillo, Texas, United States

Since I-40 only passes through a small portion of the Texas Panhandle, Amarillo is a great place to experience the Lone Star State. Home to the larger-than-life Big Texan Steak Ranch and authentic Tyler's BBQ, it has some good eats. You'll also find the vintage Wonderland Amusement Park and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum. If you are staying overnight, the Courtyard in Downtown Amarillo is in a historic building with a great location.

Tower Station and U-Drop Inn Café

Another major icon from the glory days of Route 66, the Tower Station Conoco and U-Drop Inn Cafe are probably recognizable to most because they inspired scenes in Disney's Cars . The classic Art Deco architecture has been thoroughly restored. Today, this is home to Shamrock's Chamber of Commerce and a visitor center.

Stafford Air & Space Museum

From a recreation of the Wright Brothers glider to an F-4 Phantom to spacesuits that were worn by astronauts in flight, the Stafford Air and Space Museum covers the history of air and space flight. There are 3,500 artifacts and objects on display, including a very impressive exhibit on the U.S.'s nuclear missiles, complete with a Titan II rocket.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, United States

Oklahoma City is the next major urban center along I-40. Home to offbeat attractions like the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the Museum of Osteology, and the American Banjo Museum, along with an aquarium, a zoo, a science museum, an art museum, a history museum, and more, it's a rich city bursting with things to see and do. Hit up Ann's Chicken Fry House or Tucker's Onion Burgers for a classic OKC meal. If you are staying overnight, check out the Colcord luxury boutique hotel.

Woody Guthrie Statue

Woody Guthrie was a massively influential folk artist from Okemah. Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash, and more drew inspiration from Guthrie's huge catalogue of songs, many of which were based on his experiences during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s. Today, a small park stands in Okemah with a statue and memorial plaque dedicated to Woody Guthrie.

Fort Smith National Historic Site

As you continue along I-40, you'll make your way into Arkansas. Stop at the Fort Smith National Historic Site for a look into the state's past. The fort was established in 1817, which means that this fort was the backdrop for an interesting history involving outlaws, settlers, and Native Americans. Tour the old buildings and the visitor center, which houses a museum with artifacts.

Pinnacle Mountain State Park

Get out of the car and breathe in the fresh air at Pinnacle Mountain State Park. You can get a taste of the landscape at the visitor center or by hiking or biking one of the trails. The views from the top of the mountain are utterly breathtaking.

There's no bad time to road trip I-40. Since the route is pretty far south, snowy weather isn't too much of a concern. However, if it happens to snow, be prepared for slick roads. Never underestimate how hot it can get in the desert between Texas and California. Always bring plenty of water, and make sure your car's AC is in good working condition.

Tennessee Waterfalls Road Trip

Thanks to the landscape of the Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee has some beautiful waterfalls. Start your trip at Cummins Falls on the Blackburn Fork State Scenic River. It is a very popular waterfall to visit and swim in during the warmer months. Next, head to Burgess Falls. Burgess Falls is in the Burgess Falls State Park, where you can find a total of four different waterfalls.

Continue on to Falls Creek Falls. It is a beautiful waterfall that has been featured in films and is the most visited State Park in the Summer. Finish your waterfall road trip at the Twin Falls. Next, you’ll head to The Minister’s Treehouse, which is got to be one of the coolest things in all of Tennessee. It is a treehouse that was built by Minister Horace Burgess after he felt called by God to build it. Finish your trip at the Tennessee State Prison, which is the home of the famous ‘The Green Mile’.

The Great Smoky Mountains

You’ll want to start your drive through the Great Smoky Mountains in Knoxville. Explore the beautiful city with the Great Smoky Mountains in the background. Next, continue on to Sevierville. Hike the Laurel Falls Trail, admire 360 views from Clingman’s Dome, and grab some BBQ for dinner.

While on the way to Gatlinburg, if you have the time, stop in the adorably kitschy Pigeon Forge . If you don’t have the time, finish your trip in Gatlinburg . There you’ll find the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and you’ll get to experience the full majesty of the mountain range. You’ll want to spend a few days there exploring before you leave.

Tennessee Foodie Trail

Tennesse is an amazing state for foodies to explore. For this road trip, you’re going to span the state, and start in the Southwest. There you’ll find Hagy’s Catfish Hotel Restaurant. Prince’s is the father of Nashville Hot Chicken, and is an absolute must visit for any serious foodie.

From Nashville, head south to Lynchburg and feast on delicious BBQ at Barrel House BBQ. It is one of the best BBQ places in Tennessee and you’ll leave happy and full. Theme Parks of Tennessee

Thrill seekers will love exploring some of the best Theme Parks of Tennessee. If you are traveling in the Summer, you’ll want to make sure your first stop is the Soaky Mountain waterpark in Sevierville. It is a large park with water coasters, slides, a splash mat, and so much more. A trip to Tennessee wouldn’t be the same if you didn’t stop at Dollywood.

Dollywood celebrates Dolly Parton and has coasters, amazing park restaurants, and awesome live shows. Next head to Anakeesta, a theme park in the mountains of Gatlinburg . You’ll be able to zip line, go gem mining, ride mountain coasters, and enjoy a tree canopy walk. Finish your adventure at the Lake Winne and Soakya Waterpark. Tennessee is a beautiful state, so it is naturally full of scenic byway, many of which you can use to explore the entire state. For this road trip, we suggest starting on the Antebellum Trail, an unofficial scenic byway that starts South of Nashville in Franklin. It takes you through the middle of Tennessee where you’ll get to admire beautiful Antebellum Architecture.

While you’re in the middle of the state, hop onto the Cumberland Scenic Byway. You’ll pass through several counties and make your way to the Great Smoky Mountains. Hiking Through Tennessee is an amazing way to see the state. The road trip starts off at Ramsey Cascades, which are actually the highest falls in the Smokies. Next, head to Abrams Falls Way. There you’ll hike to one of the smaller waterfalls on this trip, but the views are beautiful.

At the Rainbow Falls Trail you’ll actually be close to three trail heads. One for Rainbow Falls, one for Baskins Creek Falls, and one for the Grotto Falls. You can hike all of them or one of them, whatever you have time for. Finish the road trip at Cataract Falls. Its about a half mile hike and is actually one of the easiest hikes in the area, which is a perfect way to end a day or weekend spent hiking.

Hidden Gems of Tennessee

Tennessee is full of unique attractions that you can only find in the state. Start your journey to the Hidden Gems of Tennessee in Sweetwater where you’ll explore the Lost Sea. You’ll tour 3/4 mile cavern system and get to take a short boat tour on the underground lake. Next, head to the Minister’s Treehouse. It is a massive abandoned treehouse structure built by a Minister in the early 1990s.

Continue your journey to the very first Cracker Barrell Old Country Store. It was opened in 1969 and now you can visit it at the Wilson County Fairgrounds. End your road trip at the Geographic Center of Tennessee. You can mark your trip by taking a picture next to the obelisk along the side of the road.

Tennessee’s Ghost Towns

Start your spooky road trip through Tennessee’s Ghost Towns at Mousetail Landing State Park. Legend has it that an entire town was flooded and is now hidden under the murky waters of lake at Mousetail Landing. Continue on to the town of Wheat, which was once a thriving city. Now all that’s left of it is the small George Jones Missionary Church.

Your next stop is one of Tennessee’s most haunted towns – Elkmont. It was originally a logging camp, then a popular vacation spot, but after the land was bought in the 90s by the National Parks service it was quickly abandoned. Now it is a ghostly city in the mountains that is run down and decaying. End your trip through Tennessee’s haunted towns in Big Greenbriar. It too was once a popular city, but after the local industry dried up, it was quickly abandoned and now is nothing but stone foundations.
