I've seen Ezra several times now and every show feels very different. This was probably Ezra at his most straight-forward and he was just brilliant. Passion mixed with fragility, he built a really good relationship with the audience - us cheering him on, him drawing strength from such open appreciation. He really is one of the more original and exciting people performing at the moment - it rates as my best concert of 2019 so far.

I took my kids - girl and boy aged 9 and 12 - to their first concert: Ezra Furman - their favorite artist that I introduced to them, him being one of my own favorites. We have played his brilliant album, Perpetual Motion People for about 2 years in the car

We arrived early at Bitterzoet, Amsterdam, and the owner of the concert hall invited us in as I had spoken to him on the phone before and were so early at the door. I brought us to where the kids could sit to see - on the bar. As we walked in, Ezra Furman walked passed us with a smile on his face in recognition of how young would be these attendees of his concert that evening. They would be the only kids there.

It was just the beginning of Furman's interaction with us. It continued with him playing Inês's favorite track after I called out to request it, plus flashing them a smile from the stage after a meaningful spoken piece. The concert, happening about a week after his new album came out, Transangelic Exodus. The concert brings it alive with his commitment to the songs and the detail that Furman brings to the live performance. Following the concert, the owner, who had seen the t-shirts of the artist that the kids were wearing (which I had made for my daughter's school presentation on Furman), went and asked backstage if Ezra would sign them.

We went upstairs, otherwise out of bounds to the public, and Furman came out. We chatted for quite sometime with him - I found had a lot to say regarding his music, which focusses on sexuality, identity and mental health issues (to very engaging melodies). It was quite a mind-blower for the kids who got a long inscription on their t-shirts and to stare at him at length. He is a bit of a hero of all of us, the owner of Bitterzoet too!

I saw the wonderful Ezra Furman and his excellent band, the Visions at Bitterzoet, Amsterdam, last Tuesday. I am still dazed by this amazing show! Such talent, originality, energy and passion!

I am almost 72 and have heard a lot of music in my life, but I can safely say that I have never been so deeply touched by a concert as by this one!

Do yourself a favour and check them out and don’t miss them when they have a gig in your country or region. I have travelled to London twice to see them ( in the Roundhouse and in the Barbican) and I will go again on 23 May to see them in O2 Brixton Academy.

ALBUM REVIEW: Ezra Furman’s All Of Us Flames is the New Modern American Rock

ezra furman tour deutschland

Singer-songwriter Ezra Furman has been creating rock and roll tunes since 2008, originally being a part of Ezra Furman and the Harpoons before moving on to sing solo. Furman has achieved critical acclaim and worldwide recognition after recording the soundtrack for the hit Netflix original series Sex Education , but her work extends past the tracks written for the show. On August 26, 2022, she released her sixth studio album All Of Us Flames , under ANTI- Records, a collection of modern American rock songs that are a sign of a new age of the genre.

All Of Us Flames takes us on a trip with the opening song “Train Comes Through”, the track our mode of transportation into the rest of the album. Furman’s ingenious songwriting shines through immediately as we hear something reminiscent of an opening speech before a revolution. She then channels more punk-rock sounds in the next song “Throne” which keeps the chanting, mantra-like theme.

The third song, “Dressed In Black” is classic Ezra Furman: heavy guitar notes, stunning lyrics, and beats that sound like a song from the 70s. She sings a coming-of-age melody in “And your lips don’t move, but I can hear you talk to me/ And I watch your haunted eyes/ As they look out at the world/ The world that never cared at all for us.”

Ezra Furman - "Dressed In Black" (Full Album Stream)

For decades, rock and roll has been used as a way for artists to speak their truth and fight for change, and that’s no better seen than in songs like “Book Of Our Names” and “Lilac And Black”. In the former, Furman takes a look at the relationship between Judaism and trans people. In a tweet, she wrote, “I noticed that the book of the Bible called Exodus in English, the one where the Hebrews escape slavery in Egypt, is called the Book of Names in Hebrew. And I started to think that the act of saying names out loud, of seeing individuals in their full irreplaceable uniqueness, holds the seed of true liberation.” The song “Lilac And Black” can only be described as a queer anthem, an honest look at Ezra’s life as a trans woman in the world. “Tonight, tonight I’m dreaming of my queer girl gang/ We who walk this deadly path/ And the city that tries to kill us each night.”

Ezra Furman - "Book Of Our Names" (Lyric Video)

“Ally Sheedy in the Breakfast Club”, the eighth piece on the 12-track album, is a direct reference to one of the characters in The Breakfast Club , but in a way never before heard. Furman sings a simple song, with a slow guitar strum, about connecting to the character and longing to be her: “I watch her flicker on my TV/ The teenage girl I never got to be.” Things speed up though in the following song, “Poor Girl A Long Way From Heaven”, which still showcases her glorious writing while managing to sound like something that would play during a party montage scene in a movie.

Ezra Furman - "Poor Girl A Long Way From Heaven"

All Of Us Flames closes with “Come Close”, a soft, reflective end that’s a look back on Furman’s possible former loves, and her resounding message that there’s still work to be done to support the queer community. “The desperate ones don’t disappear/ We’re all still hanging around/ And what do your rainbows do? What do your bright flags do? What do your rainbows do here on the ground?”

Ezra Furman’s new album is nothing short but a new wave of Americana; a complete collection of songs reminiscent to those of Bob Dylan, but written to represent our modern age and shed light on the important battles we need to take part in. To celebrate her new protest album, Furman is going on tour in both North America and Europe, spreading love and acceptance everywhere she goes.

Ezra Furman (Pronouns – she/they/her/them)

Through 5 critically acclaimed solo albums, 3 albums with her former band the Harpoons as well as creating the original soundtrack for the hit Netflix Original Series ‘Sex Education’, Ezra Furman has amassed an arsenal of much-loved music.

Exploring themes of identity, religion, political angst, love, anxiety, Furman has become an icon for the misunderstood and the oppressed. Her live show has built a fierce reputation with The Guardian dubbing her “the most compelling live act you can see right now”.

Furman has also written a book on Lou Reed’s classic album ‘Transformer’ and the relationship the record has with her own life and awakening as part of the 33 1/3 Series.

Ezra Furman tells us about her Top Five Records of 2022

Brooklyn vegan december 12, 2022.

“As is widely known, I have the correct music taste,”  Ezra Furman  says, tongue perhaps in cheek, in presenting us with her list of favorite music of 2022. “Other people are in error. For example, the number one album of 2022 seems to be something called  Mind-Nights  by Tailor Swift. The most talked-about artist of the year is Conye West, who very clearly said ‘slavery was a choice’ in 2018, giving decent people reason to ignore him forever, and yet he is still selling lots of records and commanding the public eye. Meanwhile the transgender rock’n’roll artists creating the great classics of our era (Alex Walton, Asher White, Harmony’s Cuddle Party) go mostly unheard and unheralded.”

Ezra Furman: ‘I want trans people to know there’s a fighting chance’

I november 11, 2022.

“Furman, the artist hailing from Chicago, Illinois, has become defined by her directness. Her music tackles queerness and transness, as well as notions of young romance and mental health, often from the perspective of ripe anger and frustration”

“We’re Doing Zoom Therapy”: Ezra Furman, in Conversation with Sarah Silverman

Interview magazine october 20, 2022.

“In All of Us Flames, Ezra Furman pens a record for the apocalypse, but it’s not at all hopeless. This apparent contradiction becomes slightly less mysterious when you consider the circumstances in which the album was made. All of Us Flames was written almost entirely during lockdown, when Furman was raising a young child and beginning to embrace her identity as a trans woman. The result is a powerful meditation on finding community in the face of solitude, with melodies that are at once morose and euphoric, all anchored by Furman’s silvery vocals. Her unique brand of intellectual but deeply-felt art-rock has won her devout fans, including comedy legend Sarah Silverman, who called Furman to chat about Judaism, baby jokes, and the overlap between comedy and music.”

Ezra Furman on her latest ‘All Of Us Flames’

Npr september 3, 2022.

SIMON: We mentioned you wrote these songs during the early pandemic, and I gather your house was very full at that time, right?

FURMAN: It was a bit full. It was me and my gay wife and our 1-year-old. And then our friend just had a shaky kind of housing situation, and she moved into our living room for months. And then also we had this terrible landlord who lived right upstairs from us who was – well, he was prejudiced, you know? He was not happy that I was transgender when we moved in. So there was a lot of love in our house. And then there was this, like, overhang of transphobia.

Ezra Furman All of Us Flames

Northern transmissions august 30, 2022.

Ezra Furman has seemingly spent her last two albums in constant motion. She first traced a collection of Springsteen-esque stories of escape and romance songs with 2018’s Transangelic Exodus, then quickly offered up an incendiary punk paen to rage and fury with 2019’s Twelve Nudes. Her songs have often felt restless and nervy, finding her searching for peace and comfort amidst a hostile world that doesn’t want Furman or the people she loves to exist.

All of Us Flames Review by James Christopher Monger

This Chicago artist’s sixth album is a strong set of dramatic indie-rock incorporating elements of heartland rock and other styles, combining shimmering synths, guitars, piano and more with her grainy vocals and sharply crafted lyrics depicting self-love and connection as antidotes to bigotry and isolation.

Ezra Furman writes simple songs “for the mind to stretch out in”

The fader august 26, 2022.

It’s rare nowadays to find sincere protest music worth listening to. Even those elite artists who do make legitimately radical statements in their songs — Downtown Boys, Moor Mother, Special Interest, et al. — mix their full-throated activism with experiments in form. But on her recent single “Book Of Our Names,” Ezra Furman takes a direct swing at capitalism in the style of the earnest folk rockers who shook the structures of power over half a century ago.

In terms of both the joyful force it exudes and the restrictive forces imposed upon it, femininity is inherently violent. The full range and complicated range of human emotions has always been part of Furman’s creativity — especially anger, which was mined extensively in Furman’s last album, 2019’s punk blowout Twelve Nudes. Under the radar august 9, 2022.

In a press release, Furman elaborates on the new single: “The spiritual life ain’t all pious platitudes. This song is about how weird it gets, when you’re in love with the Source of Being and She’s not texting you back. Ever since it hit me that I was never going to be loved and accepted on the scale of my pop star heroes, me and my bandmates have started to work on a different vision of pop, one more our own, one that gestures at the stranger truths of the human mind. Here we are in thrall to verbally adventurous nineties music like Bjork and Beck and the Silver Jews and them kinda non-linear geniuses.”

Ezra Furman – “Lilac and Black”

If it's too loud... july 13, 2022.

The latest from Ezra Furman is what we’ve come to expect from the artist. “Lilac and Black” is a virtually genre-less song that borrows from many different styles while sounding entirely unique. There are elements of folk, pop, dance, punk, and all the multi-hyphenate genres in between, but it doesn’t truly sound like any of those.

How Musician Ezra Furman Keeps the Faith on Tour

ezra furman tour deutschland

“I like finding unmarketed stuff, you know?” musician Ezra Furman tells me. We’re lounging on a leather couch at Urban Cowboy , a boutique hotel and hidden treasure in its own right, nestled along an unassuming block of apartment buildings in Williamsburg—the perfect place to speak to someone who loves finding diamonds in the rough. “It’s how I approach everything: just trying to search for the thing that you have to look a little harder for.”

Furman has a true knack for treasure hunting. It’s what grounds her when life on tour gets hectic, whether she’s searching for synagogues on weeknights (she practices Judaism diligently) or seeking out charming narrow streets to explore during much-needed alone time (they’re her favorite feature of European cities).

Following the release of her new album Twelve Nudes on August 30th, the songwriter will embark on yet another tour through U.S. and Europe. But no matter how much time she spends on the road—and in a career spanning over a decade, there has been plenty of it—she still finds that the little moments of discovery always make the journey worth it. Here, Furman shares her packing essentials, describes the difficulties of being a religious musician, and makes the case for being a “bad tourist.”

TOUR TRAVEL

Every time, it still throws me for a loop to go on tour. It’s so disorienting and you don’t settle—you keep moving, and it feels like you’re moving even when you stop. Touring is not like other kinds of travel because you barely get the chance to see anything. You’re in some amazing place, like Prague, and you’re there for 18 hours total, including seven hours of sleep and being at a bar you can’t really leave because you’ve got to do something, and then wait a little bit (but not very long) and then do something else.

“BAD” TOURIST

I’m a big fan of walking around and just looking at things. I’m not a good tourist. I don’t find the interesting stuff or cool things to do because I’m entertained enough by just seeing what the shops look like. Stuff that’s unadvertised, and you feel like you found a little secret. We’re being marketed to constantly, and it’s nauseating, so when you can find something that you love that didn’t come to you by a company being like, “You would love this!”—that’s nice. It sounds romantic, but it’s usually stopping by a fucking Sbarro and a really uninteresting alley!

COMFORT ANIMALS

I played three of the same festivals one summer with Greta, the lead singer of Frankie Cosmos, and I think that’s when we really became friends. She had brought this incredibly soft stuffed rabbit, and she’s like, “This is my comfort animal. You don’t have one? You need one. You’re on tour.” So she got me a very small one—the size of my fist—a little round pig, which we named Jen, and I take Jen around with me to comfort myself. But I think just deciding that you’re going to have something with the purpose of making you feel better is more important than what that thing is.

ezra furman tour deutschland

TRUE RELIGION

It’s a culture clash I guess, but everything in my life is already a culture clash. My bandmates are not religious—an interesting feature of being on tour in our band is that Friday night starts the Jewish Sabbath, and I don’t work on Shabbat (which doesn’t end until Saturday night). I don’t travel. I don’t use electricity. I don’t write. I don’t use money. No shows on Friday night; no traveling on Saturday. I usually try to find a synagogue or somebody’s house to have dinner at, and it’s amazing—the hospitality of strangers. There’s a family in Leeds that I’ve stayed with three times. It’s a strange and difficult thing to do. I mean, you’re trying to join heaven and earth together. It’s not easy. It’s inconvenient. It’s strange to try to habitually transcend reality and society.

HIDDEN TREASURES

We were in Barcelona on a Friday night/Saturday morning, and I found this secret synagogue. I went to where the synagogue was supposed to be on the map, but it looked like there was nothing there. I knocked on some metal door, and it seemed like there was no one in there—but then as I was walking away, and some lady leaned out of the doorway and was like, “Pst, come over here.” It was secret—antisemitism in Europe is very real—and then she was like, come in here, and led me around this corner where there was this synagogue full of people, tons of people!

Ezra Furman

Ezra Furman can feel the future barrelling toward the now. Inside the world of her new album, All of Us Flames, the end of the patriarchal capitalist empire seems both imminent and inevitable, a turn down a path we can’t see yet but can’t avoid, either. The heat of a different world throbs just behind the skin of this one; all around us, openings to it flicker. They vanish almost as soon as they’ve appeared. But they keep appearing, as if daring us to hold them open, to widen them until they turn into a way.

A singer, songwriter, and author whose incendiary music has soundtracked the Netflix show Sex Education, Furman has for years woven together stories of queer discontent and unlikely, fragile intimacies. She has a knack for zeroing in on the light that sparks when struggling people find each other and ease each other’s course. All of Us Flames widens that focus to a communal scope, painting transformative connections among people who unsettle the stories power tells to sustain itself.

Produced by John Congleton in L.A., All of Us Flames unleashes Furman’s songwriting in an open, vivid sound world whose boldness heightens the music’s urgency. The record arrives as the third instalment in a trilogy of albums, beginning with 2018’s Springsteen-inflected road saga Transangelic Exodus and continuing with the punk rock fury of 2019’s Twelve Nudes.

“This is a first person plural album,” Furman says. “It’s a queer album for the stage of life when you start to understand that you are not a lone wolf, but depend on finding your family, your people, how you work as part of a larger whole. I wanted to make songs for use by threatened communities, and particularly the ones I belong to: trans people and Jews.”

She wrote much of Flames during the early months of the pandemic. “I had no time alone anymore; my house was super crowded,” she says. She drove to seek solitude, parked in arbitrary quiet spots around Massachusetts, and began to write. The songs that came flowed toward ideas of communality and networks of care, systems of survival cultivated by necessity among people who have been historically deprived of them.

Furman took inspiration from Bob Dylan’s ’80s albums, whose tone she describes as “a little bitter and a little hopeful,” as well as the collective ferocity of ’60s girl groups, particularly the Shangri-Las and the Ronettes. “I listened to ‘Dressed in Black’ by the Shangri-Las hundreds of times,” she notes. “When I was writing, I read that Mary Weiss of the Shangri-Las carried a gun in her purse on tour. There’s such violence to being a girl or a woman. It’s all gotta be cute, all the time, and also people are trying to kill you. And that’s life, the feminine life. Plus, young lovers just want to destroy the world.”

In her own song, also called “Dressed in Black,” Furman dreams of running away with a lover to forge a world away from the one that wants to kill them. The synth-streaked rallying call

“Forever in Sunset” peers past the scorch of the apocalypse into a vision of collective survival, tracing the ways outcast people can make each other real through mutual belief. “We’ve been alone too long / We belong together with our weapons drawn,” she sings on “Lilac and Black,” a revenge plot where she and her “queer girl gang” drive out their oppressors and claim a hostile city for themselves.

“I started to think of trans women as a secret society across the world: scattered everywhere, but so obviously bound together, both in being vulnerable and having a shared vision to change a fundamental building block of patriarchal society,” she says. “I’ve been building my world of queer pals, and it feels like we’re forming a gang.”

The soulful sweep of “Point Me Toward the Real” sets Furman’s voice against cascades of backing vocals (performed by Shannon Lay and Debbie Neigher) and horns (arranged by Bright Eyes’ Nathaniel Walcott) — a warm backdrop for tales of trauma, care, and healing to unfurl. On “Poor Girl A Long Way From Heaven,” Furman recounts a childhood encounter with God, a gesture of spiritual yearning that flows into the album’s biblical facets.

“The album is more biblically informed than politically informed,” Furman says. “The truth, both current and ancient, is that the rich are allowed to kill the poor. Despised people get their lives ruined or taken as a matter of course. The Bible is obsessed with lifting the weak. People who don’t matter are God’s main concern.”

The LP’s title derives from a lyric in the song “Book of Our Names,” inspired by the second book of the Hebrew Bible: “I want there to be a book of our names / None of them missing / None quite the same / None of us ashes / All of us flames.”

“We don’t want the world as it was given to us. What do we want? What do you build in the space you cleared by fire?” Furman asks. “After you purge all that is false, you have a positive yearning for what’s real.” There’s a place where we make it — where people who have been cast aside, abused, and exploited in service of power can claim names for themselves, where they can speak them aloud together in safety and peace. No one gets there alone. Without each other — without the collective spirit Furman invokes in her expansive, searing vision — we can’t even seek the way.

Ezra Furman announces touring hiatus: “Any sort of touring is effing difficult”

“It has a major impact on the body and mind and the structure of one’s life”

Ezra Furman performs during 2023 Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival on June 15, 2023

Ezra Furman has announced to fans that she will be taking a break from touring, due to the “pressure and exhaustion” it causes.

  • READ MORE: Ezra Furman – ‘All Of Us Flames’ review: anger, aspiration and an unflinching attitude

The American singer-songwriter announced the planned hiatus on her social media pages, revealing that once she completes her upcoming leg of UK shows, she will be holding off on any more tours for “an undecided amount of time”.

In the post, shared yesterday (August 15), Furman explained that there are an array of factors that led to her decision, including “a popular explosion of transphobia”, “increasingly corporate-owned music venues”, “COVID-19’ and “the demands of motherhood”.

She also revealed that she has faced various “unsettling” encounters with her audience in recent times that have made the thought of hitting the road increasingly difficult.

The overarching factor that led to her decision, she explained, is the physical and emotional toll that touring can lead to – saying that 17 years of live shows has taken a “major impact” on her life.

“After the upcoming UK shows (Aug. 27-Sep. 3), I’m going on an open-ended hiatus from touring. No shows outside of my hometown of Boston, for an undecided amount of time. Could be a permanent change, could be different in a year, I just don’t know,” she wrote in the update.

“There are many reasons for this. The best way to summarize it is that I’ve been doing this exhausting and wonderful work for something like seventeen years now (!) and I am tired,” she continued. “Recent events including a popular explosion of transphobia, increasingly corporate-owned music venues, COVID-19, the demands of motherhood and some unsettling audience encounters have made it all the more difficult for me.

“Even without that stuff, any sort of touring is effing difficult. The pressure and the exhaustion are immense. It has a major impact on the body and mind and the structure of one’s life, Furman added.

“Since I was a teenager (other than the ’20-’21 heavy Covid times) there has never been even a 6-month period of my life without touring. That’s because I love it and I have always loved it and always will. But it’s time for me to explore life without it, and follow my instincts of what’s necessary to take care of myself.”

Later in the post, she also clarified that her hiatus from touring should not be misconstrued as her being “done” with music and creativity, as she still plans to write more music going forward.

Furman’s next upcoming UK show will take place at Tramshed in Cardiff on August 31. The final of her upcoming gigs will be held at the O2 Ritz venue in Manchester on September 2. Find remaining tickets to the UK live shows here .

Ezra Furman

Ezra Furman began touring as a solo artist in 2011, following the split of the Harpoons that same year. Originally, the group were together from 2006, however, following their disbandment, Furman spent the next decade touring as a solo artist.

She also released six albums in her time as a solo act, including her most recent LP ‘All Of Us Flames’, which arrived last year. In a three-star review of the album , NME described it as capturing a sense of “anger, aspiration and an unflinching attitude”.

“Though the album encapsulates the struggle of a collective community of queer people who emerge from a semi-secret society, it also encompasses the intersections of Furman’s experiences – that of being a transgender woman and Jewish,” it reads. “Without being preachy, the musician teases out their co-ordinance – namely that the Bible is mostly concerned with uplifting the weak.”

“It can feel a little heavy and dragging, which leaves you to wonder: for once, might a more stripped-back approach work better to really deliver the intended message?” it continues. “Where it works best is that clear marriage of anger and aspiration, interwoven with Furman’s melodic drawl, musical tenderness and reverb. In parts, though, ‘All of Us Flames’ is an example that sometimes less is more.”
