El Cortez description

Step back in time at El Cortez in downtown, where you can experience the history of old Vegas -- along with a bustling casino floor, the elegant Parlour Bar & Lounge and some affordable eats.

Old school but cool, no-fuss budget accommodations, oozing history

Take a guess at what the longest continuously operating hotel and casino in Las Vegas is. Go ahead. (Hint: Its name is written above.) El Cortez was built in 1941. Next year will mark its 75th year in business.

At one time El Cortez was owned by organized crime figures Bugsy Siegel, Meyer Lansky, Moe Sedway and Gus Greenbaum…and, well, there's just something cool about places with mob mystique.

El Cortez has undergone several renovations, but still rocks the same facade it had in 1952, keeping the spirit of classic Vegas alive. On February 22, 2013, the structure was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. Be sure to snap a selfie with it in the background during your visit.

El Cortez is located one block from Fremont Street Experience and surrounded by an ever-growing list of hip bars, restaurants and shops in the Fremont East Entertainment District. Seriously, there are so many cool places to hang out in the immediate vicinity, we can't begin to name them.

The rates here are incredibly low. You can often book the original "vintage" rooms for less than $20 a night. Now these rooms that date back to the '40s are small, come with one queen bed and have only stairwell access, but the old school experience makes up for this.

If you're interested in more contemporary digs, go for the still affordable South Beach-themed El Cortez Cabana Suites across the street. Or for a truly unique stay, you can choose one of 10 themed Designer Suites that resulted from the hotel's Design-A-Suite Downtown contest in 2011. Our fave is the Rec Room.

For several decades El Cortez was owned by gaming visionary Jackie Gaughan. He lived at the resort until passing away at the age of 93 in 2013. A mobile exhibit honoring him can be found in Club Cortez. Provided by the Museum of Gaming History, it's called "Jackie Gaughan's Downtown as Seen Through Gaming Memorabilia" and includes a 30-minute video montage.

Got yourself a hot slot? Feeling lucky in the poker room? If you're hungry but don't want to interrupt your streak, the Gambling Gourmet, a game-side dining service, is at your beck and call for a bite anytime you desire.

You can play roulette at El Cortez without having a high-stakes budget. Some of the tables permit $1 minimum bets and have 25-cent chips. Although it'll you take a long time to build up a major windfall, it'll also take you a long time to lose your money.

With its classic design -- smoky mirrors, rich red drapes, leather chairs and a baby grand piano -- The Parlour Bar & Lounge is the perfect place to grab an age-old drink. The menu features cocktails from centuries past like the Mint Julep, Stone Sour and Old Fashioned.

El Cortez Hotel & Casino

Downtown/Fremont Street Las Vegas, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States

  • Full Review
  • Low room rates and daily resort fee (includes Wi-Fi)
  • Casino and 24-hour casino restaurant
  • Quiet location, one block from Fremont Street Experience, 10-minute drive from the Strip
  • Bright and modern 24-hour fitness center
  • Free on-site parking
  • No pool, spa, or entertainment options
  • Few dining options
  • Some rooms overlook the freeway

Bottom Line

One block from the Fremont Street Experience, the 362-room El Cortez is a solid value pick in downtown Vegas. Standard rooms are small and dated, but renovated Cabana Suites are bursting with bright colors, and the four individually decorated Designer Suites feature cool design details. Like most hotels in downtown Vegas , El Cortez lacks a pool and has limited dining choices, though its casino restaurant, Siegel's 1941 , has a retro brasserie vibe that pays tribute to the hotel's midcentury vintage. Travelers could consider the nearby Golden Nugget , which has two pools and several restaurant options including buffets and steakhouses, as an alternative, but its location isn't as quiet.

Oyster Hotel Review

A vintage value hotel on a quiet block, just a short distance from fremont street experience.

el cortez las vegas trip

With its Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and timber-framed driveway lit by heavy faux-candle bronze chandeliers, it is immediately apparent that El Cortez is a throwback. (Indeed, the 1941-constructed property was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2013.) Once inside, the hotel's style remains ensconced in the past -- a past that includes years of ownership by Bugsy Siegel, the notorious Las Vegas mobster. The hotel is the longest continuously operated hotel/casino in town, and that fact comes as no surprise based on the interiors. The dim lobby of the main building has a dark, diamond-patterned marble floor and a recessed bronze-panel ceiling; to the right lies the relatively small gaming floor and to the left is the casino bar and front desk. In the center, a grand(ish) red-carpeted staircase wraps above a piano. Depending on your outlook, El Cortez is hopelessly behind the times, or a charming slice of the Las Vegas of yesteryear.

One block from the pedestrian-only, casino-saturated heart of "Old Vegas" on Fremont Street

On Fremont Street, in Las Vegas' older downtown section, El Cortez Hotel and Casino is just east of the densely arranged, small-scale hotel-casinos. Guests are minutes by foot from the Golden Nugget, Binion's, and the Fremont. With the exception of the Nugget, which has spent years undergoing renovations, El Cortez's neighbors generally look like the weather-beaten 20th-century relics they are. In the hotel's most immediate environs lie high-rise condos, Las Vegas ' burlesque museum, a supermarket, a pool hall and live-music venue, and a modern American restaurant and bar.

Known as "Glitter Gulch" or "Old Vegas" -- where the city first started to develop its hotel-casinos back in 1906 -- downtown Vegas consists of about 15 smaller-scale hotels and casinos on the westernmost four blocks (about a half-mile) of Fremont Street Experience, an area closed to vehicular traffic and lined with mobile stands selling T-shirts, caricatures, jewelry, and other touristy gewgaws.

Though typically cheaper, the hotel-casinos here -- save the famed Golden Nugget -- are a bit less wild and exciting than the dazzling stretch of newer giants along the Strip (about two-and-a-half miles south of downtown). The area is quieter, the average visitor tends to be closer to retiree-age than clubber-age, and the main draws tend to be low-minimum tables, nickel slots, and cheap eats.

But there is a kitschy charm to these brightly lit streets. You can spot the neon cowboy, Vegas Vic, waving howdy from over a gift shop. And anyone visiting Vegas shouldn't miss downtown's nightly music, light, and video show cast over the evening skyline, the Fremont Street Experience.

  • One block from the nightly musical lightshow, the Fremont Street Experience
  • One-minute walk to Downtown Container Park
  • Nine-minute walk to the Mob Museum
  • 15-minute drive to McCarran International Airport
  • 10-minute drive to the casinos, performances, incredible restaurants, nightclubs, and designer shopping on the Strip
  • 10-minute drive to the Las Vegas Convention Center
  • 30-minute drive to Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area

Basic standard rooms, bright cabana rooms, one-of-a-kind suites

el cortez las vegas trip

Standard Pavilion rooms (265 square feet) and Tower rooms (340 square feet) are a bit older and smaller than the typical hotel room in Vegas; each has either two queen-size beds or one king. They're definitely basic, and even borderline boring (thin carpeting, beige curtains), but even these standard rooms have flat-screen TVs, plus a few charming vintage details, like antique lamps, gold-framed botanical prints, and carved-wood headboards, bedside tables, and dressers. Tower rooms have semi-separate seating areas with loveseats and bathrooms with pale peach fixtures.

Junior and Superior Cabana Suites start at 400 and 550 square feet, respectively, and have vivid Kelly green walls (plus a patterned black-and-white accent wall behind the bed) and retro-style furniture and decor, as well as flat-screen TVs, snack bars, mini-fridges, and Keurig coffeemakers. Cabana bathrooms feature white marble walls, black-and-white tile floors, and glass shower stalls with rainfall showerheads.

There are also four Designer Suites, each conceived by a different artist. These rooms feature cool design elements like wall-to-wall desert photography (Big Sleep suite), shag area rugs and high-back tufted chairs (El Contempo Suite), and wood-cutout wall panels and starburst chandeliers (Rec Room suite).

A casino, two restaurants, and two bars

el cortez las vegas trip

Like most downtown hotels, El Cortez is less dazzling on the features front than its Strip counterparts. Its main restaurant, Siegel's 1941 , has a retro brasserie vibe, with a bronze pressed-tin ceiling, red-leather circle booths, and large-scale black-and-white archival photography. Pizza Lotto is a casual by-the-slice pizza joint with counter service and flat-screen TVs. Like Siegel's 1941, Parlour Bar recalls a bygone Las Vegas time with its heavy decor, which consists mostly of burgundy carpeting and drapery and dark tufted leather seating. Ike's Lounge, near the Keno area of the casino, is a sports bar featuring 13 flat-screen TVs (all between 55 and 65 inches) and a food from Siegel's.

The casino itself contains slot machines (which are purportedly some of the loosest around) in denominations from one penny to five dollars, as well as Keno and table games like Blackjack and Baccarat.

El Cortez's fitness center is small, but it features ellipticals, treadmills, and cycling machines. A computer center and conference facilities are available for travelers on business, and a gift shop sells everything from apparel and jewelry to soda and liquor.

Arrived in Vegas on Friday night (10/14). First time staying downtown, had a room with my brother at the El Cortez. Actually a pretty nice room, had a little nook area with a small couch...bathroom was nothing special. A couple quick restaurant notes; Had lunch at Nacho Daddy, pretty good (had the Mojo Pork tacos) as well as some queso dip. Had a late mini-dinner at Smashed Pig Gastropub, kind of a weird vibe. Not really formal but not an overly casual feel, had a meat and cheese tray...apps looked pretty legit though. Also had a dinner at the Triple George Grill, pretty good. Got the burger, but after the crabcake, salad, and bread - I couldn't finish it sadly. Ended being about even on the gambling. Lost in every session of craps. Video poker was bad until the last night, where I had a big night to comeback with my starting egg. (didn't get a picture of my biggest hit which was 4 dueces w/ Ace kicker for 500$) but some are below; Not much going on - but when your losing, even the small stuff eases the pain. Below are a couple photos from the Sublime show on Friday night (VIP deck and near stage);

Yep. Work now. Nice hits! See that you squeezed in a little time at row 802. Haha Where did you play the 9/7 TDB at? Pretty hard to find on quarters. Were you always betting 2 at dollars? Why not 5 at 50c? Paytables different there?

Union reaches deal with 4 hotel-casinos, 3 others still poised to strike at start of Super Bowl week

L AS VEGAS (AP) — A union representing hospitality workers has reached a tentative agreement with four hotel-casinos in downtown Las Vegas as employees at three other properties remained poised to strike Monday when the city kicks off Super Bowl week.

By Saturday morning, the Culinary Workers Union had announced it had reached a tentative five-year contract with Binion’s, Four Queens, Fremont and Main Street that covers about 1,000 workers.

The Golden Nugget, Downtown Grand and Virgin Las Vegas near the Strip haven’t reached an agreement with the union.

The Las Vegas Strip’s three largest employers — MGM Resorts International, Caesar Entertainment and Wynn Resorts — reached deals late last year with union that covered 40,000 members, narrowly averting a historic strike .

The union then turned its attention to winning the same contract terms for works at other hotel-casinos in Las Vegas.

Since early January, the union had settled negotiations with most of those properties, including Circus Circus, Sahara Las Vegas, the Strat, Circa Resort and the El Cortez.

But after hitting a snag in negotiations with some of the remaining casinos, the union announced last week that it would go on strike if tentative contracts weren’t in place by 5 a.m. Monday for downtown casino workers at properties that hadn't reached agreements.

The NFL’s 58th championship game is expected to bring some 330,000 people to Las Vegas this week, according to the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority.

The Culinary Union is the largest in Nevada with about 60,000 members statewide. It negotiates on behalf of its members for five-year contracts.
