If you ever find yourself in New England’s charming town of Concord, MA, I highly recommend a stop at the historic Colonial Inn located on the town common, or better known as Monument Square. Here you will find gracious, warm and welcoming hospitality. The inn has been in service for nearly three centuries with the main building constructed as a private residence in 1716. I love history and the Colonial Inn is overflowing with just that.

gallery-images-cci-christmas

Our family recently dined at the Colonial Inn for our Thanksgiving celebration. This was not our first visit as we have dined at the inn many times over the years and plan to return in the years to come. Each visit I seem to learn something new about its history and as always, I very much enjoy their cuisine.

Concord’s Colonial Inn is the perfect destination for either leisure or business travel and is located just 20 miles from downtown Boston. There is something for every taste at the inn. With 56 spacious, unique rooms and suites in four distinct areas. No two rooms are alike and many of the rooms boast hardwood floors, exposed beams and period details along with modern conveniences such as private bathrooms, complimentary Wi-Fi and flat-screen HD TVs. The inn is said to be haunted and we heard that many visitors come each year seeking information about the ghostly occurrences at the property.

The inn also has award-winning restaurants , and six rooms for meetings and events. Merchant’s Row, where we have dined for special occasions, is a beautiful restaurant that is refined but not formal. Its ambience, menu and charm make this lovely restaurant a perfect place to host parties or enjoy a meal with good friends. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and reservations are recommended for all meals except breakfast.

You may also choose from three additional unique dining spaces – the Liberty Room, the Tap Room, and the Village Forge Tavern, as well as seasonal patio dining, weather permitting. Fresh seafood is a hallmark of the historic inn as is their Sunday brunch. Al fresco dining is offered seasonally and afternoon tea is served daily. We have dined in all the rooms at the inn and have been very happy with not only the food, but with the friendly service as well.

Immerse Yourself In American History At One Of The Oldest Inns In The US

Colonial Inn Concord Massachusetts

Just about every historic hotel boasts a ghost or two, and the Colonial Inn in Concord, Massachusetts, is no different. With a rich and colorful history dating back to the 18th Century and the American Revolutionary War, it's one of those places where you can almost feel the past ingrained in the woodwork. If the legends are to be believed, some of its previous residents have lingered here long after they passed away, and ghost hunters travel from all over the country to spend the night in the haunted Room 24.

The Colonial is one of the oldest inns in America and retains its old-world vibe. Even though it has all the modern amenities, it doesn't take a massive stretch of imagination to expect one of its illustrious guests of yesteryear to wander in while you're enjoying a drink in the wood-paneled bar: Perhaps Franklin D. Roosevelt in search of a gin martini or an Old Fashioned, as was his custom.

The former American President isn't the only famous visitor to the Colonial in the past. The hotel has also welcomed Henry David Thoreau, author of "Walden" (he'd probably order a glass of water), First Lady Jackie Kennedy (a Negroni with a twist), tycoon J.P. Morgan (a Manhattan cocktail), and Shirley Temple, child star of the '30s, no doubt thirsty for a Shirley Temple. In short, the Colonial Inn is not only a great place to stay but a must-visit for connoisseurs of American history.

The history of the Colonial Inn

The Colonial Inn started life as three separate buildings, with the earliest built by Captain James Minot, a respected doctor and lawyer, in 1716. When the famous "shot heard around the world" sparked events that led to the American Revolutionary War in 1775, the central portion of the current hotel was ready to do its bit. Used as a storehouse for munitions leading up to the conflict, it also cared for wounded patriot soldiers. The Liberty Room, now one of the hotel's restaurants, was used as a hospital, and Dr. Timothy Minot Jr., Captain Minot's son, performed surgery in Room 24. Those who didn't make it were kept in Room 27, which served as a morgue.

After the war, one part of the property was sold in 1799 to John Thoreau, grandfather of the famous naturalist and author Henry David Thoreau. All three buildings were acquired and later converted into a guesthouse in the mid-19th Century. Initially, it was simply called Thoreau House but later became known as Concord's Colonial Inn after it changed hands again in 1900. In the 20th Century, the hotel developed a luxurious reputation, attracting many famous guests. In fact, several members of the Kennedy family took rooms there when visiting Caroline Kennedy, who studied at Concord Academy. In modern times, it is still known as one of the finest historic hotels in New England.

The Colonial Inn is surrounded by history

The Colonial Inn is located on a pleasant leafy square in downtown Concord, around a 40-minute drive away from Boston . Like the hotel, the area is steeped in history: dating back to 1635, it was one of the first English settlements built away from the coast, and the centerpiece of the square is an obelisk commemorating the local men who died during the American Civil War. Nearby is Old Hill Burying Ground, with graves as old as 1677; the home of Mary Rice, who was involved with the Underground Railroad and lobbied President Lincoln to help free enslaved children; and the house where Louisa May Alcott wrote "Little Women."

The Inn itself is immaculate yet modest, earning a reputable reputation over the years. Tripadvisor customers rate it four stars out of five, praising the food, service, and historic atmosphere. While there are a few decent restaurants in Concord, the Colonial Inn is one of the city's destination places to dine in, with three options onsite. Check out the Sunday brunch in the classy dining room of Merchants Row and chow down on unpretentious American fare in the Village Forge Tavern or historic Liberty Room. If you're a fan of things that will creep you out , don't worry if you can't secure Room 24 — ghosts have been spotted at various other locations around the hotel over the years!

The Majestic Inn

  • Description

DESCRIPTION

This four-bedroom cabin for 12 makes the perfect base for enjoying Dollywood or exploring secluded mountain trails! The Majestic Inn is sized just right for a large family or a group of friends who want the best of both worlds–the bustling attractions of Pigeon Forge and the quiet serenity of nature, too. Open the door and step inside this gorgeous cabin!

LIVING ROOM

The Majestic Inn has the feel of a high-end vacation lodge, starting with the supremely comfortable living room. Picture windows reveal the breathtaking view outside: Forested hillsides and distant mountain ridges. Sink into the smooth, soft leather sofa, or take your choice of plush armchairs. The stone fireplace, log tables and lofty cathedral ceiling bring nature inside, with the glow of polished wood everywhere. A flat-screen TV perches over the rustic log mantelpiece, perfectly positioned so every seat gets a great view.

Bring those new recipes you’ve been meaning to try! You’ll want to spend time in this airy, open plan kitchen, chatting with the family while you experiment with new dishes. Inside the pretty wooden cabinets are all the cookware, dishes and utensils you need. A large counter provides plenty of space to chop veggies or lay out a buffet. How a sundae bar with fruit, sprinkles, and whipped cream?

DINING AREA

The unique dining table is both beautiful and tough–a wooden farmhouse table, inset with stone panels, ready for anything from family feasts to hours of Monopoly play. Six classic Windsor chairs bring antique charm to the sunny dining area. Windows surround the table, so you get expansive views with every meal!

Need more seating? The kitchen’s bar counter has room for four more folks to dine.

With four bedrooms and three bathrooms, the cabin easily accommodates up to 12 guests. The master bedroom is a romantic stunner, featuring a private fireplace and a heart-shaped, jetted tub for two, next to the king-sized bed! Light a toasty fire, fill the tub, and don’t forget to pour some Tennessee fruit wine to sip while you soak. The ensuite master bathroom has a shower and tub combo and plenty of storage. Unpack your toiletries and you’ll feel at home.

Two more bedrooms have queen beds in log frames. All bedrooms have flat-screen TVs so you can watch your favorite shows in private. The second and third bathrooms offer handy shower and tub combos. One bathroom includes a large vanity with double sinks, so you’re not bumping into each other to get ready in the mornings.

The bunk room is a delightful surprise. These aren’t your plain old kid-sized bunks! The lower bunk has a full bed mattress, with a twin bunk overhead, so everyone can get a great night’s rest here. (Pro tip: These terrific bunks make a great fort for kids of any age–just add some blankets and imagination!) A queen sleeper sofa adds more options.

Shoot pool on the green-felted pool table. It’s next to large windows, so clear Smokies sunlight illuminates your game. A video game console is loaded with classic games including Pac-Man, Galaga and Frogger. Feeling old-school? Pull out one of the board games thoughtfully stored in the table here. The game room also has a seating area, flat-screen TV, and direct access to the deck outside.

BONUS LIVING AREA

Upstairs, a second living area gives you even more space to sprawl! Stretch out on the sofa and gaze out the huge windows or cue up a movie on the flat-screen TV. Overhead, a vaulted ceiling shows off exposed wood beams and keeps the space cool and bright.

OUTDOOR SPACES

A spacious patio is the star of the inn’s outdoor amenities! Paved with stone, and ringed by a beautiful stone and log wall, the patio will become your outdoor living room. Spend hours here, playing cornhole, dining alfresco at the full-sized picnic table, or relaxing in the colorful Adirondack chairs. The mountain views surround you and the fresh air is never-ending!

The Inn boasts two wraparound decks, conveniently covered so you can enjoy being outside in bright sun or cool drizzle. Old-fashioned rocking chairs beckon you to take a break and sip Tennessee moonshine while you watch the sun set.

A hot tub bubbles merrily, ready to soak your cares away. A soothing dip in the hot tub is ideal after a long hike or a day of shopping.

OTHER AMENITIES

Bring your bathing suits and pool toys. Your cabin rental includes use of the nearby, seasonal swimming pool. Brush up on how to play Marco Polo and show the kids how it’s done!

Stay in touch with friends and family (and work–if you must!), using the cabin’s complimentary Wi-Fi.

You get exclusive use of two parking spaces, so your vehicles are close at hand when you’re ready to head into Pigeon Forge.

Go ahead, explore that muddy mountain trail. You can wash clothes whenever you want, thanks to the cabin’s washer and dryer.

The Majestic Inn is fully stocked with bed linens and fluffy towels. No need to bring your own!

Our stay at Majestic Inn was nothing short of amazing! The cabin is spacious and clean, perfect for our large family of 9. The hot tub and pool table kept everyone entertained, and the arcade was a hit with the kids. The views from the deck were breathtaking, especially at sunset. Being close to Dollywood and other attractions was super convenient. We can't wait to come back next year!

We loved our weekend getaway at Majestic Inn! The cabin is beautifully furnished and spotlessly clean. The hot tub was a treat after a day of exploring the nearby National Park.

Majestic Inn is truly a hidden gem in the Smoky Mountains! The cabin is expansive and maintained, offering ample space for our group of 8 adults. Some Caribbean islands see almost 'total destruction' after Hurricane Beryl

colonial travel inn

A more complete picture emerged Wednesday of the extensive damage wrought by Hurricane Beryl's trek across the Windward Islands, revealing destruction and at least seven deaths.

At least three islands report more than 90% of the homes and buildings either destroyed or severely damaged, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency reported Wednesday . All three are within the chain of Grenadine Islands, where Beryl roared into the Caribbean on the southern end of the Windwards, between St. Vincent and Grenada.

With 19 participating states across the Caribbean , the agency was helping coordinate disaster response on Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines even as it continued to track Beryl’s movements across Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Belize. The eye of Beryl, still a Category 4 storm, raked Jamaica's coast Wednesday afternoon and was expected to pass near the Cayman Islands Thursday morning, before making landfall in the Yucatan on Friday morning.

The damage estimates for the Windwards – where Beryl made landfall over Carriacou – are only "a very preliminary look," said Elizabeth Riley, the disaster management agency's executive director. Beryl struck the islands with sustained winds of 150 mph and higher gusts on Monday, and the National Hurricane Center had warned that winds could be up to 30% higher on the tops of hills and mountains.

The impacts to the Grenadine Islands are "quite significant," Riley said, leaving residents exposed and vulnerable. Even as recovery efforts began, a tropical wave brought rain and gusty winds Wednesday to the suffering residents.

Grenada prime minister discusses damage on Carriacou

In a briefing late Tuesday after spending more than two hours in a helicopter provided by the government of St. Lucia, Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell described "total destruction" on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

"There's really nothing that can prepare you to see this level of destruction," Mitchell said. "It is almost Armageddon-like, almost total damage and destruction of all buildings. Complete devastation and destruction of agriculture. Complete and total destruction of the natural environment."

"There is literally no vegetation left anywhere on the island of Carriacou; the mangroves are totally destroyed, the boats and the marinas significantly damaged," he said. "There is almost complete destruction of the electrical grid system in Carriacou. The entire communication system is completely destroyed."

However, Mitchell added, he'd been heartened by the volunteers "showing true Grenadian spirit" by arriving from other less damaged areas in boats and fishing vessels to begin delivering relief supplies to those affected.

Hurricane Beryl's fearsome seas As Beryl tears through Caribbean, a drone sends back stunning footage

Beryl damage updates

The following are the preliminary assessments Riley listed:

Carriacou, Grenada

  • The total population of 6,081 has been affected, so shelter is "a significant consideration."
  • Majority of homes and buildings have been extensively damaged
  • Communications have been significantly compromised

Petite Martinique, Grenada

  • Estimated 80% of the houses and buildings extensively damaged or destroyed
  • 900 people affected
  • Majority of the island is sheltering in place

Canouan, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • 100% of the island's population (12,600) has been affected
  • An estimated 90% of the houses were damaged, either extensively or destroyed
  • Police station in Charlestown lost its roof

Union Island, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Full population of 3,000 was affected by extensive damage
  • Estimated 98% of buildings, including houses badly damaged or destroyed
  • Airport control tower destroyed, hospital roof destroyed
  • Power plant received significant damage
  • Government assisting people who wish to evacuate

Mayreau, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Total population of 300 people affected
  • 90% of the housing stock and buildings have been damaged or destroyed

Palm Island, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Resort and desalination plant significantly damaged
  • More than 40 homes with damage, a number expected to rise
  • Confirmed significant damage to the fishing sector
  • More than 200 boats damaged
  • Significant damage to the coastal infrastructure, particularly along the south coast
  • Partial road obstruction
  • Significant damage on southern end

Trinidad and Tobago

  • Power outages
  • Water disruption on Tobago
  • Roadway blockages on both islands

Bequia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • An estimated 10% of the homes and buildings suffered roof damage
  • Airport and runway are usable
  • Minimal damages reported

Mitchell, Grenada's prime minister, said the island's northernmost parish, Saint Patrick suffered significant damage. The parishes of Saint Andrew, Saint Mark and Saint John also suffered much more damage than the parishes of Saint George and Saint David.

"It is clear that agriculture has taken quite a battering. It is clear that many persons have lost their roofs," Mitchell said. "It is clear, in some instances, many people have lost their entire homes."

This boutique hotel dates to 1936 and was built as a studio and home by cowboy artist Lon Megargee , who named it Casa Hermosa. The inn's significance lies in its origin as an artist's retreat and its reflection of the Southwestern art and culture of the time.

Over the decades, it has evolved from a private residence into a charming historic inn, maintaining its artistic legacy and intimate atmosphere characterized by adobe architecture, hand-painted tiles and lush desert gardens. It's also known for its award-winning restaurant , Lon’s, named after the original owner, and its cozy, art-filled rooms.

Phoenix: Royal Palms Resort and Spa

Opened in 1929 as a private residence, the property was designed in a Spanish Colonial Revival style, featuring stucco walls, red-tiled roofs and lush gardens. In 1948, it transformed from a grand private estate to a boutique hotel that has maintained its historic charm and elegance.

Over the years, the Royal Palms has played a key role in the development of Phoenix's hospitality industry. Targeting wealthy guests seeking a secluded and luxurious getaway, the hotel quickly became known for its romantic ambiance and exceptional service.

Today, the Royal Palms operates as part of the Hyatt portfolio. It offers modern amenities such as a world-class spa, fine dining at the award-winning T. Cook's restaurant and beautifully appointed rooms, all while preserving its historic elegance and charm.

Phoenix: The Egyptian Motor Hotel

Quirky and eye-catching, The Egyptian Motor Hotel stands out for its distinctive Egyptian Revival architecture and kitschy charm.

Designed as a 52-unit motel with towering palm trees and a coffee shop, this midcentury modern property opened under the name Las Palmas in 1954 and quickly became a notable stop for travelers along U.S. 60, offering comfortable accommodations in a desert oasis setting.

By the 1980s, the motel had undergone several name and ownership changes, catering more to locals seeking affordable weekly stays rather than tourists.

Now, the Egyptian Motor Hotel has been reinvented as an ultra-retro, dog-friendly destination with a rock 'n' roll vibe. Reopened in 2023, it's a centerpiece of the Grand Avenue arts district. It offers what its website calls " modern crash pads " that cater to a hip, artistic crowd. The motel features a 250-seat outdoor venue where DJs, local bands and comedians entertain guests who can watch from balconies.

The motel's former coffee shop has been transformed into Chilté, a sit-down restaurant serving Mexican-inspired cuisine that has won national praise from Bon Appetit and others.

Details: 765 Grand Ave., Phoenix. egyptianmotorhotel.com .

Scottsdale: Hotel Valley Ho

Hotel Valley Ho is a midcentury modern hotel that opened in 1956 on the edge of Old Town. Designed by architect Edward L. Varney, the hotel quickly became an iconic example of the modernist movement, known for its sleek architecture and stylish design.

Its look reflected the optimistic, forward-thinking spirit of the 1950s and 1960s, and the hotel was a favorite retreat for Hollywood celebs such as Roy Rogers, Bing Crosby and Humphrey Bogart. Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood held their wedding reception at the Valley Ho.

A major renovation in 2005 preserved the hotel's historic character while adding a conference center and additional levels to the hotel.

Details: 6850 E. Main St., Scottsdale. hotelvalleyho.com .

Phoenix: The Clarendon Hotel and Spa

The Clarendon Hotel was built in 1972 as a modern, upscale accommodation option in the city's heart.

It's historically significant for several reasons, most notably as the site of the 1976 murder of Arizona Republic reporter Don Bolles , who was investigating organized crime and corruption . This tragic event brought national attention to the hotel and impacted Arizona's journalistic and legal landscape .

Today the Clarendon Hotel is a mix of retro and contemporary, offering a stylish and vibrant atmosphere for guests 18 and older. Known for its colorful decor, rooftop bar with panoramic views of the city and a lively pool area with cabanas and a water wall, The Clarendon is a hub for social gatherings and events.

Al Sharpton to deliver eulogy for Black man who died after being held down by Milwaukee hotel guards

Image

FILE - Al Sharpton waits for Vice President Kamala Harris to speak before walking across the Edmund Pettus Bridge commemorating the 59th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday voting rights march in 1965, March 3, 2024, in Selma, Ala. Sharpton, who serves on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, said in a news release Tuesday, July 9, that he’ll speak Thursday, July 11, at the funeral of Dvontaye Mitchell, a Black man who died after a confrontation with hotel security guards last month. MILWAUKEE (AP) — The Rev. Al Sharpton is scheduled deliver a eulogy for a Black man who died last month after being pinned to the ground by hotel security guards in Milwaukee, his office said Tuesday.

The death of D’Vontaye Mitchell has drawn comparisons to the murder of George Floyd , a Black man killed in 2020 after a white police officer in Minneapolis knelt on his neck.

Sharpton, a longtime activist and leader who serves on the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights, said in a news release that he’ll speak at Mitchell’s funeral Thursday. The Republican National Convention opens just days later, on July 15, and law enforcement agencies are bracing for political protests around the convention arena in Wisconsin’s biggest city.

Sharpton said convention-goers need to know about Mitchell’s death.

“We cannot watch D’Vontaye Mitchell’s murder be washed out by the RNC coming to town, where they will solidify a nominee whose view of justice is pure brute force,” Sharpton said, referring to former President Donald Trump.

Mitchell, 43, died on June 30 at the Hyatt Regency after four security guards held him down on his stomach, media outlets have reported. Police have said Mitchell entered the hotel, caused a disturbance and fought with the guards as they were escorting him out.

Image

Mitchell’s family has hired civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represented Floyd’s family. His death spurred worldwide protests against racial violence and police brutality.

It’s unclear why Mitchell was at the hotel or what happened before the guards pinned him down. The Milwaukee County medical examiner’s initial report said Mitchell was homeless, but his family told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that’s not correct. Sharpton said in a news release announcing his Milwaukee visit that Mitchell’s mother said her son was suffering a “mental health episode.”

Police officials were still investigating Mitchell’s death on Tuesday, the Journal Sentinel reported. The police department responded to an Associated Press request for an update by emailing a statement saying that an unidentified individual had fought with security guards at the hotel on June 30 and was unresponsive when officers arrived.

The medical examiner’s office has said the preliminary cause of death was homicide but the cause remains under investigation. No one had been charged criminally as of Tuesday.

A spokesperson for Aimbridge Hospitality, which runs the Hyatt Regency in Milwaukee, told the Washington Post that the company extends its condolences to Mitchell’s family and supports the ongoing investigation.

This story corrects the spelling of the first name of a Black man who died after being pinned to the ground by hotel security guards. He is D’Vontaye Mitchell, not Dvontaye.

7 AARP travel benefits seniors should know

By Joshua Rodriguez

Edited By Matt Richardson

July 12, 2024 / 11:11 AM EDT / CBS News

gettyimages-1364169180.jpg

One benefit of retirement is having the freedom to choose what you'll do with your time. And, if you're like many, you're looking forward to using that freedom to travel. But traveling can be expensive and planning trips can be a headache. But, AARP may be able to help.

AARP is an association that advocates for the interests of the 50-plus community. And, while the organization does work to improve seniors' legal rights, it also offers other benefits to its members . Many AARP benefits are centered around travel. And, if you're a senior planning to take trips throughout your retirement, you should know how the association can help.

Sign up for an AARP membership to save as you travel .

AARP members can enjoy a wide range of travel benefits. Some of the most exciting include:

Travel planning

There's quite a bit that goes into planning a trip. You'll need to pick a destination, decide how to get there, book a hotel, plan your meals and potentially rent a vehicle. There's so much involved in the process that many people pay travel agents to handle it.

But, with AARP, planning a trip is simplified. As a member, you can access benefits like:

  • AARP Destination Guides : Whether you want to learn more about popular destinations in the United States or globally, AARP Destination Guides can help.
  • AARP Travel : Get advice, tips and tools for planning your trip that only AARP members can access.
  • AARP Vacation Ideas : Not sure where you'd like to go? Choose one of many AARP Vacation Ideas to plan your next trip.

Simplify the travel planning process with AARP today .

Hotel, airfare and car rental discounts

Traveling can be costly, but AARP discounts can bring that cost down. The association partnered with Expedia to create the AARP Travel Center. Members can use this feature to find exclusive deals on hotels, airfare and car rentals, among other travel-related services like cruises.

Restaurant discounts

It's important to plan for the cost of food when you travel. AARP can help you cut that cost, too. The association has partnered with many national brands and local restaurants to offer member discounts. Finding those deals is as simple as logging into your account and searching for restaurants the association has partnered with in and around your destination.

Roadside assistance discounts

Something as simple as running out of gas or getting a flat tire can be stressful. That's especially true when you're traveling. But AARP can help alleviate that stress. Members can get 20% off of roadside assistance packages from Allstate. Plans start at just $5.50 monthly and cover a variety of items ranging from towing to tire changes and more.

Entertainment discounts

AARP connects its members with discounted local entertainment opportunities. You can find entertainment discounts in your destination by visiting the association's entertainment discount search page. Entertainment discounts often range from 20% to 50% off but may be higher or lower in some cases.

Travel protection

Traveling can come with medical risks . For example, if you experience symptoms in a country with minimal medical support, you may need to go a long distance to find quality medical care. But, as an AARP member, you can get a 20% discount on their Medjet packages. If you take advantage of this offer and experience medical problems while traveling, Medjet will transport you to the closest acceptable medical facility, even if that means transporting you back to your hometown.

Rushed passport savings

If you need a new passport, or to renew one, quickly, RushMyPassport can help. And, if you're an AARP member, you'll enjoy discounts on their services.

The bottom line

AARP offers members a wide range of travel benefits. Whether you need help planning your next trip or you want to enjoy discounts on things like hotels, airfare and rental cars, a membership with the association will prove valuable. Members enjoy other discounts that can help with travel, too. As a member, you can save on restaurants, roadside assistance, entertainment, travel protection and even expedited passport services. Sign up for AARP now to tap into these and many more benefits .

A Gentleman in Moscow: What to expect from the Paramount+ series? Explored

A Gentleman in Moscow promises to be a fascinating story about a Russian Count banished to a hotel for life. The story is set against the backdrop of the Bolshevik Revolution. Ewan McGregor plays Count Alexander Rostov, a charming and well-mannered gentleman, punished to a life of confinement, in times of social and political upheaval.

The upcoming Paramount+ TV with Showtime series also stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Johnny Harris, Leah Harvey, and Beau Gadson in prominent roles. The eight-part mini-series will be released on Friday, March 29, 2024, with new episodes every week.

Which book is A Gentleman in Moscow based on?

The series is based on a 2016 novel of the same name by Amor Towles and revolves around a Russian count put under house arrest in a hotel attic. The book was among the New York Times bestsellers when it was released and received favorable reviews.

It was on the bestseller list for over 40 weeks, received wide critical praise, and was featured in several Best Books of the Year lists.

What is A Gentleman in Moscow TV mini-series about? Plot explored

It is set in Moscow, around the Bolshevik Revolution, when Alexander Rostow is arrested for writing counter-revolutionary poems. By the courtesy of a few powerful friends, he is spared from execution. But he is condemned to life imprisonment inside a hotel.

Count Rostow is a man of strong belief. He is always composed and is a perfect gentleman. Rostow spends decades in this hotel but never loses his refined manners. His time in the grand Hotel Metropol leads to interesting encounters and charming conversations.

This unique setting is aided by the themes of freedom and hope and is told through intriguing characters, captivating scenes, and smart dialogues.

What to expect from A Gentleman in Moscow TV mini-series?

The show looks visually stunning in the trailer, with elements of suspense, drama, comedy, and political intrigue. Here's what fans can expect from the series.

1) Suspense

The Russian Revolution was one of the most important events in the history of the world. It marked an end to the reign of the Romanovs and the beginning of socialist rule under Vladimir Lenin.

The revolution flipped the country's politics, not just with the hammer and sickle, but also with gunpowder and bullets. The powerful lost power, and the aristocracy became a symbol of vulgar opulence, class oppression, and corruption.

The story about a noble aristocrat set in that era is bound to give the audience elements of suspense. One wrong move or word can become a matter of life and death.

2) Playful relationships (young girl helping him escape the hotel)

The trailer also featured Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Beau Gadson, Leah Harvey, etc, as characters who would encounter Rostow in his imprisonment. The unusual relationships the protagonist builds with the people around him will be a source of interest for the viewers.

The trailer showed a young girl helping Rostow escape from the hotel. Would they succeed or end up in front of a firing squad?

3) Plot twist (Entry of the actress)

Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays Anna Urbanova, an actress who 'stars in bad movies', as said by one of the characters in the trailer. She catches Rostow's attention upon her arrival at The Metropol Hotel . The diva and the prisoner incite steamy stares and flirtatious exchanges. During his confinement at the Metropol, her presence stir things around.

4) Meaning and Symbolism

"They can take away everything, but they can't take away who you are."

When a nation adopts a new ideology and undergoes a socio-political transition, new symbols of unity are simultaneously created. This story, spanning over three decades primarily, revolves around the protagonist's struggle to preserve his identity against those who want to erase it.

What happens when the world you were born into becomes nothing more than a memory? In A Gentleman in Moscow, Amor Towles uses subtle moments of clever comedy to elevate the humane drama. The trailer promises to be an honest attempt to bring the brilliant book to life .

A Gentleman in Moscow will be released on Paramount+ on March 29, 2024.

Take a Helicopter to British Columbia's Wine Country from This Vancouver Hotel

The Shangri-La Vancouver's luxurious 15th-anniversary package showcases the best of British Columbia — and we experienced it firsthand.

colonial travel inn

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

It's no surprise that a city as spectacular as Vancouver is filled with incredible luxury hotels, and for the last 15 years, the Shangri-La Vancouver has been one of them.

Situated in the tallest building in the heart of downtown, spectacularly surrounded by city, mountains, and sea, the Western Canadian hotel marks the group's first of two Northern American hotels, the second being the Shangri-La Toronto . (It's also the second-smallest property in the group — second only to Paris — with just 119 rooms.) British Columbian style melds with Shangri-La’s Asian heritage across 15 floors of guest rooms and suites, Carlino restaurant, and the Chi spa and fitness center that opens up to the outdoor pool and hot tub.

Now, to kick off and celebrate the momentous 15th anniversary, Shangri-La Vancouver has partnered with iconic British Columbian winery Phantom Creek Estates to create a four-day, three-night stay and package for two that encompasses all Shangri-La and British Columbia have to offer.

In June, I checked in for a few days to be one of the first to experience what the hotel calls "luxury at new heights."

Courtesy of Shangri-La Vancouver

Day one of the package begins with a peaceful, relaxing arrival and check-in to the hotel's chic and opulent Orchid Balcony Suite.

Clocking in at a little over 1,300 square feet with floor-to-ceiling windows wrapping around the room, this premier suite gives unobstructed panoramic views of downtown — perfect for gazing out while unpacking and enjoying an afternoon tea service in the suite. On a nice evening, you can enjoy your tea from your oversized private balcony before ending the evening by hopping into the incredible deep-soaking marble tub. Nothing says relaxing and luxury quite like an iconic bathtub moment.

colonial travel inn

Wake up on day two, your first official full day in British Columbia , and head into downtown Vancouver, where you, your guest, and your own personal photographer will get into a private Skyluxe helicopter.

Don your headset and live out your "Top Gun" fantasy for the hour-long flight over picturesque mountains, rivers, and lakes. Then, you'll touch down in the Okanagan Valley for your day spent at Phantom Creek Estates. Wine-loving dabblers and enthusiasts alike will enjoy a private tasting and tour of the sculptures, vineyards, and winery, where you’ll learn all about the Okanagan’s exceptional terroir while sipping on upcoming releases thieved from the barrel right in front of you.

Finish your tour in the Founder’s Cellar dining room, where you’ll be dining in a glass room surrounded by barrels for an unforgettable multi-course lunch and wine pairing. The Estates culinary team provides an experience with fresh, local, seasonal ingredients like no other. Unique personalized keepsakes, like a bottle of their Phantom Creek Vineyard Cuvée (my favorite of the day), signed by the makers, will commemorate your day among the vines. (Insider tip: You cannot leave without getting a scoop of gelato from the cart in the tasting room, trust me.)

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

With a full belly, you’ll return to your helicopter for another trip through the clouds. The rest of the evening is yours. Head downtown to dine at Black+Blue steakhouse or Coast , or if you’re looking to stay close to home, there’s Shangri-La's own Carlino, which serves up comforting yet elevated Northern Italian food with a wonderful wine program if you’re still thirsty.

After an exhausting day of flying around in helicopters, wine tastings, and fine cuisine, naturally, a four-hour spa day is all but required, and the Shangri-La and Chi spa team are all too happy to make that happen for you. Since nothing says luxury like a lavish spa, guests experiencing the Luxury at New Heights package will also enjoy the Alchemist’s Retreat.

First, enjoy a restful soak in the infinity bath, followed by an exfoliating scrub and thermal mud mask. Then, you’ll hop into a eucalyptus-filled steam shower to clean yourself off for your facial and full body massage. The entire spa retreat is sequestered in your personal “mini spa.” Everything from your bath, shower, and massage table is in a chic treatment room with a little lounge and fireplace. As a spa lover, I found this day to be the perfect and phenomenal final full day.

Use your free morning or afternoon to enjoy all Vancouver has to offer, from great shopping and dining to underrated neighborhoods worth exploring.

I loved wandering around Gastown, a neighborhood along the harbor with streets lined with cute shops, restaurants, and cafes. If it’s a beautiful day, head down to the marina, where little ferry boats are constantly sailing, and hop aboard to Granville Island .

You'll be able to see Vancouver by water and soak in the city skyline before stopping at the Granville Island Public Market, which is filled with artisan markets, produce and farmer stalls, restaurants, bars, and entertainment.

Be sure to save room in your suitcase for all the memorable keepsakes as you wrap up your stay with a leisurely late afternoon check out the following day. I indulged in a box (or two) of Northern Bars Nanaimo bars because when in British Columbia, do and snack as the British Columbians do, right?

The Luxury at New Heights experience package, priced at $22,690 for two guests, is available through November.

The Langham’s lavish suite.

Like the city’s winds, visitors blow into Chicago and find the charms of this Midwestern gem at nearly every corner. With a lake that could easily be mistaken for an ocean, 57 acres dedicated to museums and a skyline designed by some of the world’s finest architects, Chicago is undeniably one of the United States’ finest cities, though it’s often overlooked in favor of New York City ’s flash or Los Angeles ’ sunny forecasts.

Whether you seek an art deco marvel or a midcentury modern stunner, you can trust Forbes Travel Guide’s exclusive list — we have been rating hotels since 1958 using an objective and independent process. To find the best hotels in Chicago, our incognito inspectors posed as ordinary guests and stayed multiple nights at each property. The inspectors tested hundreds of exacting standards, with an emphasis on exceptional service, which accounts for 70% of a property’s rating. The remaining 30% comes from the quality and condition of the facilities. FTG does not require a business relationship from the properties it rates, and it does not earn a commission if you book one of the following hotels.

FIVE-STAR HOTELS IN CHICAGO

The Langham, Chicago

The Langham, Chicago occupies the first 12 floors of a soaring 52-story landmark designed by midcentury modern master architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Inside the hotel, you can see nods to the building’s heritage — large, elegant guest rooms have subtle bronze accents while gorgeous travertine tiles are found in bathrooms and public spaces.

Although it opened in the Windy City in 2013, the hotel reflects the centuries-old heritage and European hospitality sensibilities of the original 1865 Langham in London .

Guests can take afternoon tea in the open and airy Pavilion, dine on seasonal American fare at Travelle (designed by David Rockwell), indulge in a treatment at the Asian-inspired Five-Star Chuan Spa or retreat to the 12th-floor club lounge for cocktails and magnificent views of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. A suite look.

The Peninsula Chicago

A retreat of choice for stars and notables, The Peninsula Chicago is an impeccable address for those longing for discreet, attentive service that’s delivered by a staff trained in the art of gracious hospitality.

Luxurious guest rooms are bright with light wood and muted earth tones, and the marble bathrooms have oversized tubs where you can soak while catching up on your favorite shows on the flat-screen TV. But if you’re looking for reasons to leave the comfort of your spacious, contemporary guest room, the skyline-level Four-Star spa and Four-Star Shanghai Terrace restaurant are two great ones. Fabulous city views from Terrace 16.

Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago

The 92-story glass and steel tower in which the luxurious Trump International Hotel & Tower Chicago resides brings a dose of glamor to an already-glitzy skyline.

Inside, the splendor continues, with rich, clubby woods and neutral tones balancing the sparkle of the views outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. The modern, slate-gray rooms are filled with custom-designed furniture and many boast fully stocked state-of-the-art kitchens.

During your stay, enjoy a relaxing day at the newly redesigned Four-Star spa or head to Terrace 16 to sample modern American cuisine amid iconic Chicago skyline views. See more.

FOUR-STAR HOTELS IN CHICAGO

Four Seasons Hotel Chicago

With its prime Magnificent Mile location and attractive, contemporary rooms, Four Seasons Hotel Chicago is a top choice for visiting celebrities and anyone else who appreciates the peace and quiet the polished property promises.

Stay here for the views: many of the soothing neutral-hued rooms come with leather window seats overlooking Lake Michigan and the Gold Coast, and the hotel boasts the highest suites in the city.

Additionally, the lobby, grand ballroom and restaurants and the larger suites and apartments received updates in 2020 from renowned architecture and design firm Rottet Studio. But even with the refresh, two things haven’t changed: the wonderful, personal service and the location. See more.

Coziness at every corner.

Park Hyatt Chicago

The personality of Park Hyatt Chicago reflects what the Illinois metropolis is known for: stunning art and design, great food and warm Midwestern hospitality. Its exclusive Gold Coast address along the Magnificent Mile speaks to the type of place it is — a luxury hotel with thoughtfully crafted amenities, a well-curated art collection and elegant design.

Park Hyatt Chicago debuted a $60 million renovation in 2022, bringing understated, contemporary luxuriousness to everything from the public spaces to the accommodations. Upon arrival, the hotel welcomes you with a sense of home, attentive staff and well-appointed décor. Unwind in the cozy “living room,” just off the lobby area, while perusing an array of art books and watching the city go by through floor-to-ceiling windows looking out onto bustling Chicago Avenue. See more.

Waldorf Astoria Chicago's sophisticated quarters.

Waldorf Astoria Chicago

One of the city’s most stylish luxury hotels, Waldorf Astoria Chicago revealed a makeover across the grand-chateau-style property in late 2022. The art deco jewel, which was inspired by the style of Coco Chanel and French design masters, has a style and grace that can be seen across the updated social spaces and accommodations.

The hotel draws from the past with its old-fashioned motor court and antiques while remaining firmly au courant with its crisp gray color palette and slick surfaces. Guest rooms are spacious with fireplaces, terraces, white marble baths and impressive wet bars.

The lavish property is also home to Brass Tack, an American brasserie with Chicago influences, on the hotel’s third floor; the Veuve Clicquot courtyard Peacock Garden; Bernard’s, an intimate craft cocktail and champagne bar; and a lavish Four-Star spa with Greek columns and a mosaic pool covered in thousands of tiles. The modish Zorba Lounge.

RECOMMENDED HOTELS IN CHICAGO

Hotel Arista

This suburban Chicago property avoids the cookie-cutter hotel experience by adding thoughtful touches to your stay. Beyond the latest in cardiovascular machines and free weights, Hotel Arista’s onsite fitness center provides Zumba and personal training services. The restaurants and cafés peppered throughout this property vary in style and mood. Once you’ve exerted yourself, bask in all that the 6,500-square-foot spa has to offer.

The first hotel to be LEED-certified in Illinois takes pride in every detail: The Living Room lounge’s fireplace has no carbon footprint, and every room has a hook placed high enough to air out a three-piece suit — or keep a freshly pressed wedding gown wrinkle-free. See more.

The Library’s smart interior.

The LaSalle Chicago, Autograph Collection

Soaring 21 stories above the Financial District, The LaSalle Chicago, Autograph Collection has a stellar view of things. Visionaries behind the property could see that people were looking for an in-town stay that didn’t compromise on sophistication. So, this meticulous stunner wrapped itself in Calacatta marble, Frette linens and Egyptian rugs and opened its doors in 2022.

The Chicago hotel knows that locals and visitors have high culinary expectations, so it cooked up Grill on 21, a modern steakhouse with an exhibition-style kitchen. And you can rest assured The LaSalle Chicago heard all the bickering about properties being too far from area landmarks, which is why walks to the Art Institute of Chicago, the Willis Tower and Millennium Park take less than 15 minutes from your room. See more.

Loews Chicago Hotel is a Windy City wonder.

Loews Chicago Hotel

Chicago doesn’t want for fabulous hotels, so when Loews Chicago Hotel was built from the ground up, the Loews luxury chain had its work cut out to grab travelers’ attention. The result? A modern, welcoming 52-floor tower in the heart of Streeterville.

A couple blocks east of the Mag Mile, near the business-centric Loop and less than a 10-minute walk to Navy Pier, Loews Chicago is primed to please both leisure travelers and those on business.

The luxury hotel also has a wonderful sense of place, harnessing Chicago’s rich history of all-star architects, artists and designers. A chef-driven restaurant, a spectacular rooftop lounge, a fitness center and a 75-foot lap pool all make Loews a standout urban hotel. See more.

Pendy’s posh bathroom.

Pendry Chicago

The Windy City’s design-focused hotel scene got a major upgrade when Pendry Chicago’s doors blew open in 2021. The 364-room property carved from the polished granite walls of the art deco Carbide & Carbon Building, erected back in 1929, makes a statement. Gilded elevators, black-and-white flooring and an air of confidence and sophistication float through these corridors.

Pendry Chicago’s aesthetic sits at the corner of past experiences and present expectations. Here, you can spend an evening sipping scotch in the moody, leather-draped Bar Pendry before working out with the latest exercise equipment in your room the next morning. Venteux, a Parisian-inspired restaurant, and Château Carbide, the seasonal rooftop escape, are timeless spots with Instagram-worthy photo opportunities. See more.

A luxurious living area.

The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago

The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago’s location in the center of the Magnificent Mile on the exclusive Gold Coast can’t be beaten. Shopping mecca Water Tower Place houses the hotel as well as some of the best stores and restaurants in the city.

Beyond the prestigious shopping and fine dining, the luxury Chicago hotel is also an ideal location to enjoy the savviest sightseeing in the city. Spend an afternoon perusing works from Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Dalí at the nearby Art Institute of Chicago; walk across the street to see the historic Water Tower, one of a few structures to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871; or stroll over to popular Navy Pier along the lakefront. See more.

A stylish getaway.

Thompson Chicago

Surrounded by historic mansions and top-shelf designer boutiques, Thompson Chicago is a cozy, stylish getaway in downtown. From the first step off the tony Gold Coast streets and into the industrial-turned-chic lobby, you are enveloped in an atmosphere that feels unmistakably cool.

The 247-room luxury hotel’s eclectic artwork, midcentury lines and abundance of leather and velvet create a warm setting that draws the fashion set as well as weekend vacationers.

Keep an eye out for a soon-to-debut hotel eatery from Phil Stefani Signature Restaurants. The family-owned and -run company is behind favorite local institutions like Tuscany and Stefani Prime. In the meantime, visit popular restaurants like Maple & Ash and Gibsons Bar & Steakhouse, both of which are within a two-minute walk of the Thompson. See more.

A chic start to your stay.

Viceroy Chicago

French novelist Marcel Proust once wrote, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” You’ll ruminate on those words upon walking into Viceroy Chicago’s lobby and seeing the quote and others from the writer inscribed on a 30-foot-tall teal wall.

While this isn’t a new landscape — the brick and terra cotta structure housed the Cedar Hotel in the 1920s — TAL Studio approached the historic building with a new set of eyes. A rich palette of gold and the same alluring teal in the Proust piece shades the 180 rooms and suites; midcentury furniture lends a timeless feel; and quirky touches like different colored guest room doors add character.

But there’s more to see in and around this Gold Coast hotel. Viceroy’s signature restaurant Somerset turns out seasonal American fare while buzzy rooftop bar Pandan slings cocktails and city views. See more.

HOW WE RATE

Forbes Travel Guide is the only independent, global rating system for luxury hotels, restaurants, spas and ocean cruises. Started in 1958 as Mobil Travel Guide, FTG created the original Five-Star rating system for hospitality.

  • Our highly trained inspectors stay at every property we rate, evaluating based on up to 900 objective criteria . Our hotel stays span multiple nights.
  • We pay our own way . No one can buy a rating; all ratings are earned through our objective inspection process.
  • Our inspectors, a team that spans the globe, are anonymous , so they have the same experience as a typical guest.
  • While we inspect both service and facility, our Star Rating system emphasizes service because your experience at a hotel, restaurant or spa goes beyond looks — how it makes you feel is what you will remember most.
  • The standards cover every touchpoint of the guest experience , from reservation to departure, encompassing topics like cleanliness, efficiency, sense of luxury, guest comfort and more. A property’s commitments to wellness and sustainability also factor into the rating. Properties are regularly reassessed.
  • Our Standards and Ratings group independently refines the standards annually, ensuring they reflect luxury guest expectations and evolving industry trends . This rigorous process includes input from our Standards Advisory Committee , a panel of top hospitality industry executives.
