The Historic Colonial Inn: Rich in History, Charm and Hospitality

By Paula Schmitt

If you ever find yourself in New England’s charming town of Concord, MA, I highly recommend a stop at the historic Colonial Inn located on the town common, or better known as Monument Square. Here you will find gracious, warm and welcoming hospitality. The inn has been in service for nearly three centuries with the main building constructed as a private residence in 1716. I love history and the Colonial Inn is overflowing with just that.

Our family recently dined at the Colonial Inn for our Thanksgiving celebration. This was not our first visit as we have dined at the inn many times over the years and plan to return in the years to come. Each visit I seem to learn something new about its history and as always, I very much enjoy their cuisine.

Concord’s Colonial Inn is the perfect destination for either leisure or business travel and is located just 20 miles from downtown Boston. There is something for every taste at the inn. With 56 spacious, unique rooms and suites in four distinct areas. No two rooms are alike and many of the rooms boast hardwood floors, exposed beams and period details along with modern conveniences such as private bathrooms, complimentary Wi-Fi and flat-screen HD TVs. The inn is said to be haunted and we heard that many visitors come each year seeking information about the ghostly occurrences at the property.

The inn also has award-winning restaurants , and six rooms for meetings and events. Merchant’s Row, where we have dined for special occasions, is a beautiful restaurant that is refined but not formal. Its ambience, menu and charm make this lovely restaurant a perfect place to host parties or enjoy a meal with good friends. The restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and reservations are recommended for all meals except breakfast.

You may also choose from three additional unique dining spaces – the Liberty Room, the Tap Room, and the Village Forge Tavern, as well as seasonal patio dining, weather permitting. Fresh seafood is a hallmark of the historic inn as is their Sunday brunch. Al fresco dining is offered seasonally and afternoon tea is served daily. We have dined in all the rooms at the inn and have been very happy with not only the food, but with the friendly service as well.

Do you enjoy history and fine dining? I highly recommend a visit to the Colonial Inn in Concord, MA.

How to Plan the Perfect Trip to Williamsburg, Virginia

Williamsburg has charming inns, world-class museums, and one of T+L readers' favorite resorts in the South.

Best time to visit, how to get there, neighborhoods to visit, how to get around.

Depending on past experience, travelers may associate Williamsburg, Virginia, with a few different things. For many, school trips and family vacations brought them to the Historic Triangle: Jamestown, Yorktown, and Colonial Williamsburg , the 18th-century living history museum with sites, tours, and exhibitions up and down Duke of Gloucester Street (more affectionately known as DoG Street). Some know Williamsburg for its adventure parks, Busch Gardens and Great Wolf Lodge water park. Others recognize it as the home of William & Mary , the second-oldest college in the United States.

No matter your familiarity, or lack thereof, with Williamsburg, one thing's for sure: There’s something for everyone. Leslie Shotwell, the guest loyalty and experience manager at Williamsburg Inn , Griffin Hotel , and Colonial Houses-Historic Lodging , notes that Williamsburg "provides experiences and fun for all ages," whether you’re interested in "leisure and relaxation" or the area’s "historical sites, world-class art museums, a variety of accommodation options … [or] beautiful arboretum gardens." It’s these factors — as well as the various culinary offerings and outdoor activities — that put Williamsburg on the list of Travel + Leisure readers’ favorite cities in the U.S. in the 2023 World’s Best Awards .

While history is central to Williamsburg’s narrative and culture, the nearly 16,000-person city continues to grow and evolve. "I graduated from William & Mary in 2005 and returned full-time starting in 2014. During that time, and since then, there has been an absolute explosion in things to do, places to dine, and experiences to enjoy," says Robby Willey, co-founder of The Virginia Beer Co . "This is not just the Williamsburg you visited in elementary school."

Read on to discover where to stay and what to do in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Top 5 Can’t Miss

  • Stay in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg at the luxurious, award-winning Williamsburg Inn.
  • Take the scenic route along the Colonial Parkway, a 23-mile drive connecting Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown.
  • Meander down the brick walkways and into the shops in Merchants Square.
  • Enjoy a sandwich from The Cheese Shop — and don't forget to ask for extra House Dressing.
  • Explore the neighborhoods outside of Colonial Williamsburg via the Williamsburg Tasting Trail.

Williamsburg Inn

Voted by T+L readers as one of their favorite resorts in the South , the Williamsburg Inn is a stalwart character in the area. Its old-school elegance and history are complemented by its various amenities and activities — among them, a top-notch spa, a golf course, and several on-site restaurants.

Williamsburg Manor Bed & Breakfast

"There are a number of amazing bed-and-breakfasts around Greater Williamsburg (don't sleep on The Inn at Eagles' Watch ), but the brewery has a long history with the Williamsburg Manor . We used to pour at charity tailgates there, hosted by the innkeepers, ahead of William & Mary football games (with Zable Stadium a mere block away)," says Willey. The six-room B&B conveniently sits right on Richmond Road, which takes you into Colonial Williamsburg. "When my wife and I were married in 2020, my entire family stayed here … The owners are generous, the trappings are wonderful, and that food in the morning! My father-in-law still talks about the shrimp and grits he enjoyed there at our post-wedding brunch the next day. And, as we know, to get a recurring compliment from any father-in-law is no easy feat," says Willey.

Williamsburg Lodge, Autograph Collection

The decor of its rooms may be inspired by Colonial Williamsburg, but Williamsburg Lodge, Autograph Collection has all of the modern touches you’d want in a hotel. Plus, it’s located around the corner from its sibling property, the Williamsburg Inn, so guests also have access to the spa, golf courses, and fitness center.

Kingsmill Resort

Travelers who want to experience downtown Williamsburg, but prefer something more remote and closer to the water, should consider the various accommodation options at Kingsmill Resort . Whether you’re booking a standard guest room as a solo traveler or couple, a multiroom condo as a family, or the 7,000-square-foot Estate at Kingsmill as a larger group, you’ll be able to enjoy the resort’s range of recreational activities along the James River.

Discover the Black history of Colonial Williamsburg.

It would be a mistake to visit Colonial Williamsburg and not make an effort to understand the role of Black and enslaved individuals in the area during the 18th century. Colonial Williamsburg provides a self-guided itinerary, titled The African American Experience , but visitors can also take the African American History in Williamsburg tour with Williamsburg Walking Tours .

Drive along Colonial Parkway.

"There's some real natural beauty in this area, and the Colonial Parkway — a 23-mile historic roadway stretching from the York River at Yorktown to the James River at Jamestown — is a great showcase of much of it. It connects you to the historic areas, but also lets you experience a wide expanse of Williamsburg — and if you end up in Yorktown, a pint of Free Verse at the Yorktown Pub is the perfect end to a long journey," says Willey. Just be sure to check for any closures on the National Park Service website before embarking on your drive.

Get a dose of collegiate nostalgia on William & Mary’s campus.

A crisp fall day is best spent wandering the grounds of William & Mary. The Old Campus, which neighbors Colonial Williamsburg, is especially beautiful. The brick paths connect the famed Wren Building, the President’s House, and several other impressive structures. If the weather permits, take a seat by one of the school’s most distinguishing features, the Sunken Garden.

Spend a day exploring the Williamsburg Tasting Trail.

There are 12 total stops on the Williamsburg Tasting Trail , a 21-and-over experience highlighting the different breweries, wineries, distilleries, and meaderies in the area. Start with a game plan, assign your designated driver, and then begin your day at Alewerks Brewing Company, Silver Hand Meadery, The Virginia Beer Co., Williamsburg Winery Tasting Room and Wine Bar, or any other spots you want to try.

Enjoy some family fun at Busch Gardens or the Great Wolf Lodge water park.

Roller coasters and waterslides can entertain everyone for an entire weekend. Grab tickets for Busch Gardens or its water park, Water Country USA. Great Wolf Lodge water park also offers day passes for its collection of wave pools, lazy rivers, waterslides, and interactive water play areas.

Best Shopping

"Located adjacent to Colonial Williamsburg's historic area is Merchants Square ," says Shotwell. "The storefronts are diverse, as some doors take shoppers through an 18th-century experience with handmade gifts and local goods, while others are modern brands we all know and love."

The Peanut Shop of Williamsburg

Perusing The Peanut Shop of Williamsburg and sampling its complimentary confections is par for the course when shopping in Merchants Square. Start with the salted peanuts, move on to the chocolate-covered variety, and round out your visit with the nut brittle.

Campus Shop

For all things William & Mary, including sweatshirts, T-shirts, and hats, pop into Campus Shop , a quaint storefront on Prince George Street. Even if you didn’t attend the College, you can still rep the green and gold with pride.

The Shoe Attic

If you want to add to your wardrobe while in Williamsburg, drop by The Shoe Attic for fashionable footwear from brands like Jeffrey Campbell and Dolce Vita, and try on some new pieces from Crosby by Mollie Burch or Minkpink.

Wythe Candy & Gourmet Shop

A trip to Wythe Candy & Gourmet Shop has no age limit; the nostalgic sweet treat experience involves peering at the candied apples, picking out some homemade fudge, and taking home a few bags of gummies and chocolates.

Paul’s Deli, College Delly, and Green Leafe Cafe

"To experience real Williamsburg, as a student or a local does, you have to grab a beer and bite at one of the downtown delis," says Willey. " Paul's Deli , the College Delly , and the Green Leafe — just across from the historic William & Mary campus — are three community staples featuring comfort food, Greek and Italian specialties, and some solid local brews." And yes, the cheese fries at Paul’s are legendary.

Blackbird Bakery

Chef David Everett has put his stamp on Williamsburg in many areas; Blue Talon Bistro , DoG Street Pub , La Piazza (housed in what was formerly The Trellis), and Blackbird Bakery all fall under his ownership. The latter is the perfect stop for a pick-me-up cup of Illy coffee, a loaf of freshly baked bread, a croissant, or a chocolate chip cookie.

The Cheese Shop, Fat Canary, and Downstairs at Fat Canary

"Everyone in Williamsburg knows The Cheese Shop and their world-famous sandwiches with House Dressing," says Willey. "[But] not everyone knows that the family who runs The Cheese Shop also runs a fine-dining experience just next door, called the Fat Canary .” Fat Canary's seasonal menu changes on a regular basis, but expect crispy oysters, pan-seared sea scallops, braised beef short ribs, and the like. Willey also shares how, "almost every night," the wine cellar beneath The Cheese Shop transforms into Downstairs at Fat Canary, what he calls a "speakeasy-style find right in the midst of Colonial Williamsburg." No need to make a reservation — "you have to catch them when they're open."

Christiana Campbell’s Tavern, King’s Arms Tavern, or Shields Tavern

Cozying up at one of Colonial Williamsburg’s 18th-century taverns — Christiana Campbell’s Tavern , King’s Arms Tavern , or Shields Tavern — is an appropriate way to spend a few hours, particularly in the late fall or winter. Christiana Campbell’s Tavern, "known as one of George Washington’s favorite places to dine," according to Shotwell, serves up a historically inspired menu that includes hoe cakes, chowder, and fried chicken. She adds, "Candlelit rooms with the soft sounds of tavern music complete the dining experience."

"Each season brings exciting new programs and experiences for both guests and locals to enjoy," says Shotwell. But she and Willey agree that fall is decidedly the best time to visit Williamsburg. "The eastern Virginia heat is just beginning to taper off, the leaves are turning, the Festbier is fresh, and football is back," explains Willey. "The William & Mary community is a proud one, and enjoying a day of tailgating ahead of Tribe football is a memory maker. Don some green and gold gear, grab a pregame bite at one of the delis, raise a round at a local tailgate, then join us inside Zable Stadium to root on the student athletes," he adds.

When planning a fall trip, though, travelers should make a note of William & Mary’s annual Homecoming Weekend in October. The school spirit Willey mentioned brings in alumni from across the world, and it can be harder to find accommodations or tables at the more popular restaurants.

American Airlines operates daily flights between Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport (PHF), the closest airport to downtown Williamsburg, and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). Travelers can also fly into Norfolk International Airport (ORF) or Richmond International Airport (RIC); both are about 45 minutes to an hour away. Amtrak also serves Williamsburg, with the Northeast Regional route stopping at the city’s brick depot station, a five-minute ride from Colonial Williamsburg.

The Edge District

"There are some amazing communities with some amazing shopping and dining experiences that are not located in the traditional tourist areas," says Willey. The Edge District, home to The Virginia Beer Co., can be found between Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens. While there, take a distillery tour of Copper Fox or shop for antiques at The Velvet Shoestring .

Billed as a "mixed-use 'New Urbanism' community," New Town is a quick, 10-minute drive from Colonial Williamsburg and caters to visitors looking for traditional retail stores, restaurants, and a good place to stretch their legs. Barnes and Noble Booksellers , Bonefish Grill , and Regal New Town Cinemas 12 are just a few of the businesses featured on the neighborhood’s extensive roster.

Midtown Row and High Street

Richmond Road, the main thoroughfare in Williamsburg, can be broken down into a few areas. It ends or begins — depending on your point of view — at the edge of Colonial Williamsburg and continues northwest, navigating through High Street and Midtown Row, two neighborhoods made up of residences, retailers, and entertainment options. The former has a movie theater, Movie Tavern, as well as a coffee shop, Tipsy Beans Cafe , and several grab-and-go restaurants. Midtown Row is a bit closer to Colonial Williamsburg and William & Mary, and has a grocery store and several dining options, including  Sal’s by Victor , Amiraj , and Super Chix .

RYAN M. KELLY/AFP via Getty Images

Colonial Williamsburg itself is highly walkable, but a car is helpful if you plan to drive the Colonial Parkway or explore the Greater Williamsburg area. Local transportation is also provided by the iconic Williamsburg Trolleys. There are three red and green replica trolleys that make their way from Merchants Square to High Street and New Town every day. Round-trip tickets are just 50 cents.

Travelers can also rent e-bikes through Williamsburg on Wheels , a local company that offers e-bike and Segway tours of Williamsburg, Jamestown, and the surrounding area.

Make Colonial House Inn Your NYC Happy Place:

by Penny Zibula | Oct 28, 2019 | Accommodation , North America , Travel , Travel Tips | 2 comments

A Charming Oasis in the Heart of  the Big Apple

Sign outside theColonial House Inn (©simon@myeclecticimages.com)

This quaint boutique hotel is located on a quiet tree-lined street in Midtown NYC’s eclectic Chelsea neighborhood. The delightful atmosphere of the High Line , the convenience of the subway and buses, shopping, restaurants, and many of the city’s iconic attractions are within walking distance from the hotel.

Simon and I had the pleasure of spending several days exploring NYC with our CityPass . Colonial House Inn was a comfortable home away from home after hours of museums, memorials, and trying to find the best pastrami sandwich in town. The staff was friendly, the complimentary happy hour gave us the opportunity to mingle with fellow guests, and the luxuriousness of our oh-so-comfortable bed brought a soothing end to our hectic days.

The 1850 brownstone building that is Colonial House Inn became a hotel in 1985. The hotel’s founder was Mel Cheren, an artist, entrepreneur, and financial backer of the Paradise Garage disco.

When the 1980s brought the AIDS crisis. he was one of the first to respond. He offered the building to the Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) organization as a safe and welcoming haven for HIV infected gay men in which they could spend their final weeks. When the GMHC outgrew the space, Cheren converted it into a bed and breakfast hotel.

Comfort and simplicity are the hallmarks of this hotel. Many of Cheren’s original paintings are on display throughout the building. You can see them in the 22 guest rooms and suites, the cozy lobby, where happy hour is held daily., and in the cheerful breakfast area.

Among the personal touches that give Colonial House Inn a homey atmosphere are complimentary coffee and tea available throughout the day. Breakfast is also complimentary, including juices, cereals, yogurt, and fresh bagels brought to the hotel every morning from the Bronx.

Colonial House Inn prides itself on its diverse clientele, however, it is not wheelchair accessible. The staff will make every effort to place guests with ambulatory mobility issues in rooms that require climbing fewer stairs. Be sure to ask about this when making your reservation.

The Naked Truth

One of the most unique features of Colonial House Inn is the rooftop patio. Invitingly decorated with touches of greenery, umbrellas, and chaise lounges, make spending some quiet time there a true delight. What’s unique about that? This rooftop is the only one in NYC where full nudity is permitted.

According to Colonial House Inn Manager, Tony Breen, “Clothing is optional.” He made it clear, however, that this is the only area where you can take it all off if you choose. Don’t even think about making happy hour happier by parading around the lobby in the buff.

Tony also told us of a book club that occasionally meets on the rooftop to discuss current reads sans apparel. The group is made up of mostly women, and their meeting schedule is somewhat weather dependent.

Also, in August, participants of a large annual nudist convention held in Upstate, New York come to the Colonial House Inn for a couple of days in NYC before the convention.

Our personal oasis in NYC was a suite on the lower level of the hotel. The rooms had several oddities, including a spiral staircase that disappeared into the ceiling. Our suite had once been part of Mel Cheren’s apartment, and the staircase had once led to his studio on the floor above. Instead of being eery, I thought the staircase gave the room a funky, but whimsical aura.

The sitting area was cozy, and the bedroom checked all of my three important boxes. The bed was comfy, the shower had good pressure, and the complimentary wifi worked as expected.

Since we prefer homeyness over luxury, Colonial House Inn made us feel right at home.

Room rates vary, and several packages are available. Check the Colonial House Inn website for current information.

Andrew and Susan Bernstein have owned Colony House Inn since 2008. They were looking for a hotel to purchase when they learned that Mel Cheren had passed away. He had no children and the hotel was on the market as part of his estate. “The hotel had been operating at 100 percent occupancy for the last three years before we took it over,” Andrew explained. “That made a big difference in our decision to buy.”

The Bernsteins made a number of cosmetic changes to the interior of the building but held back when it came to major renovations and staff changes. Many employees had been working at the hotel for a long time. Tony told us that he began as a night desk clerk over 20 years ago, and, even though his current position is far more demanding, he still loves his job. “It had been working well,” Andrew said, “so why make big changes?”

So what is the philosophy behind Colonial House Inn’s success? “Customer service,” was Andrew’s answer. “We always try to say yes to customer requests within reason.”

“I love our customers,” Susan added,“ and I want them to love New York. I want them to share our passion for the city.”

These sentiments come through loud and clear in every aspect of Colonial House Inn . Perhaps that explains why the hotel sees a large amount of repeat business. It’s in the middle of all the fabulous offerings of NYC, providing a soothing salve for your senses when you need it most.

Looks a great place to stay in New York!

Bucket list on a budget: Travel New Orleans without breaking the bank

Check out local eateries, free live music and more!

The Big Easy is a bucket list destination for fun-seekers. With live music and jazz echoing through the streets, delicious French and Creole cuisine -- serving everything from beignets and po' boy sandwiches to French 75 cocktails -- there's an abundance of must-do activities in New Orleans.

PHOTO: General views of an impromptu parade down Bourbon Street in the French Quarter Oct. 15, 2022 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

But living it up in the Crescent City can get costly if you're not careful, so "Good Morning America" scoped out the best way to enjoy bayou country on a budget.

If you're pinching pennies, see all the ways you can still let the good times roll, below.

Travel experts share tips to save on summer travel

Getting there

Airfare prices to New Orleans, like most destinations, can vary depending on the time of year, but in the beginning of June for example, roundtrip fares from Chicago O'Hare International Airport can be found for under $145 on Spirit Airlines, and for $45 more -- around $189 -- American Airlines has similar flights that include a carry on item for no fee.

Where to stay

Look at hotel membership programs before you book your stay.

An IHG One Rewards account gets guests a slightly cheaper rate: A room at the Hotel Indigo, for instance, is priced at $129 per night for members, $7 less than the typical rate.

Travel expert Clint Henderson, managing editor at The Points Guy, told "GMA" that "among the perks you can potentially get just for being a member in a loyalty program are free Wi-Fi, late checkout and even room upgrades."

"In the case of IHG, specifically, you unlock member discounts by booking via their website as opposed to an online travel agent," he said.

Eat like a local

PHOTO: A general view of the atmosphere at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival at Fair Grounds Race Course April 24, 2016 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

There's no shortage of delicious New Orleans restaurant options from legendary chefs like Emeril Lagasse or Nina Compton, but if you're looking to save, check out specials and find some go-to spots that locals love.

At the famed, family-run Parkway Bakery, one of the oldest po' boy shops in the city and known for its fresh baked bread, visitors can enjoy an array of stuffed oversized sub-like sandwiches for as little as $7. And if you can agree on the fillings and toppings, sharing a full size po' boy like the classic flash-fried Louisiana wild-caught Gulf shrimp comes in at just $7.70 each for two people.

PHOTO: ABC News' Ashan Singh enjoys some local crawfish in New Orleans.

Plus, May through July is peak crawfish season, and local eateries like Clesi's Seafood Restaurant & Catering have an abundance of the freshwater crustacean for just $8.50 per pound. The restaurant offers weekly specials as well like $3 taco Tuesday and free fry basket Friday, and gives customers a complimentary order of french fries tossed in a house-made parmesan garlic butter with the purchase of a pitcher of beer.

PHOTO: Jazz musicians saxophonist and guitarist in live busking performance on street corner in French Quarter, New Orleans, USA.

It wouldn't be a visit to New Orleans without satisfying your sweet tooth with beignets. The renowned Cafe du Monde serves up the deep-fried pâte à choux pastry, which is doused in powdered sugar, in orders of three for just $3.85 -- but don't forget, it's cash only.

Getting around the city

Skip the cabs or rideshare apps and pick up a Jazzy Pass to use public transit for just $3 a day.

The card includes unlimited rides on the ferry, bus and street cars, providing a unique view of the city.

Listen to the music

PHOTO: A customer eats a beignet at Cafe Du Monde in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S., Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2018.

You'll never miss a beat in the jazz-filled French Quarter. Entertainment is free, but be sure to pack some small bills and tip your favorite artists as you enjoy the historic area.

The New Orleans Jazz Museum also hosts free afternoon concerts Tuesday through Friday.

Venture outside the city center

Look for activities, tours and other attractions from the local tourism board to book unique deals.

Plus, Groupon has offers on more than 40% off the Jean Lafitte Swamp Tour.

‘A Gentleman in Moscow' production designer Victor Molero on creating the show's labyrinthine set [Exclusive Video Interview]

In Amor Towles 's novel "A Gentleman in Moscow," the story's central location, the Metropol Hotel in Moscow, is described as having "rooms behind rooms and doors behind doors." So when it came time to create the elaborate set required for the novel's television adaptation, production designer Victor Molero was given no easy task – especially because finding an appropriate location in northern England, where the show was produced, proved impossible.

"We needed to recreate this location and the timing was tight. So I did the research in 10 days and used another 10 days to design the hotel set," Molero tells Gold Derby in an exclusive video interview. "So it was really stressful. But we did it. I always say that the real Metropol Hotel in Moscow was built in five years. We built the sets for ‘A Gentleman in Moscow' in five months."

Based on Towles's best-selling book, "A Gentleman in Moscow" is about a Russian count (played by Ewan McGregor ) who is sentenced to life under house arrest following the Russian Revolution. That puts the count inside the Metropol Hotel for years and makes the location one of the limited series' main attractions.

"It's really a stereotype to say that the hotel is like another character, but in this case, it is completely like another character," Molero says. "It was really a challenge in a way because the hotel was crucial in telling the story of the count."

Molero built detailed sets for "A Gentleman in Moscow," including the count's bedroom and other areas within the residence. But he says he's perhaps most proud of his work in the hotel's lobby, the bustling open space with one piece of furniture tied directly to the character: a bench

"When I was thinking how to create the lobby in a hotel, it's like a station. People go in and out all the time. And the count is there, he's waiting for something," Molero explains. "So it came to me, that image of the count waiting on that bench for what will happen with his life. And that is an element that I added. You try to play with this element in the space to give a layer to the story and the character."

Molero has received acclaim for his work on the show, but there is one review that stood out to the longtime production designer: a stamp of approval from Towles himself, who came to the set during the first week of production.

"When he arrived and he looked around, to see his face was the most special moment in my career," Molero says. "He was our father in a way, the one that created the whole thing. So it was a really special moment to see his reaction."

"A Gentleman in Moscow" is streaming on Paramount+ With Showtime.

Huckleberry Inn

  • Description

Built with traditional log cabin construction, this Pigeon Forge cabin for up to 12 guests is a rustic retreat for a large family or friend group. Four bedrooms, five baths and two living rooms make Huckleberry Inn spacious. The full-sized bar, game room and fire pit make it entertaining!

The living room beautifully brings the outdoors indoors. Log walls, a stone fireplace and hand-hewn, exposed ceiling beams make you feel as if you’re in a 19th-century settlers’ cabin. Lucky you–this country cabin hides modern amenities like a flat-screen TV. Relish the thoughtful touches including stained glass lamps, plump sofas and a charming bear-themed rug.

Need more space to sprawl? A second living area offers a comfy couch and an air hockey table.

Huckleberry Inn is home to a unique farmhouse kitchen with its own stone fireplace. You won’t have to cook over this blaze–just enjoy the friendly warmth while you whip up family meals or assemble picnics. The fully equipped kitchen has everything you need, tucked into cabinets styled like wooden barn doors. There’s even another TV here! Dine at the granite-topped kitchen island or at the cafe tables you’ll find both indoors and outdoors. There’s also a large dining table that comfortably accommodated up to 12 people.

Four bedrooms easily accommodate up to a dozen guests in total comfort. The cabin has four queen beds, one king bed, and one queen sleeper sofa.

If you want a traditional Appalachian experience, pick one of the two bedrooms with interior log walls and hand-hewn, exposed wood beams. One of these log cabin rooms has a log bed and a bedside fireplace. Another room features wide plank walls, striking black-and-natural wood furniture and richly colored Southwestern decor.

With five bathrooms, folks can get ready each morning without bumping into each other! Spa-like touches add luxury, like the large, stone-tiled shower and deep soaking tub.

Huckleberry Inn boasts an incredible extra: Your own private bar! This delightful space has seating for 9 and 3 TVs for your viewing pleasure. You’ll feel as if you just strolled into that watering hole where your “usual” is waiting for you before you even walk through the door. Dazzle family and friends with your mixology skills! All you have to do is stock up on drinks. Try Tennessee specialties like bourbons, flavored moonshines, and local fruit wines.

The bar is also a game room, with a foosball table and three arcade-style gaming consoles for hours of challenging play.

Check out the cafe tables and cushioned chairs next to the big picture windows! What a cozy spot for chatting, checking email or simply enjoying the view.

Out front, an old-fashioned front porch welcomes you. Out back, the covered deck gives you unobstructed views of the Smokies’ gentle peaks against the horizon. Watch for wildlife and listen to birdsong as you soak in the soothing hot tub.

Steps away is the outdoor fire pit surrounded by Adirondack chairs and benches. Gather the whole family here to make gooey s’mores or roast hot dogs. At night, watch the sparks fly upward while you look for constellations overhead.

Complimentary Wi-Fi is available so you can keep up with email, book tickets to attractions or order takeout.

Huckleberry Inn comes with ample parking for such a large cabin. Your group gets eight parking spaces to keep everyone’s cars nearby.

The cabin includes all the towels and bed linens you’ll need.

A washer and dryer make cleanups a snap. Go ahead, take that rainy day hike–mud’s no problem here!

For added peace of mind, this cabin features a whole house generator, ensuring that you have electricity in the event of a power outage.

It was super spacious. It's away from everything. The amenities were great and the house was clean and very well kept. Would definitely recommend!

Excellent Clean, comfy, relaxing and very peaceful. The cabin was spacious and the heated vents in the bathroom were amazing! The mountaintop was beautiful and quiet. Definitely will come again!

It was Amazing!!! We loved absolutely everything about this cabin and will surely come back. We will make this place our home anytime we come to the smoky mountains. It was indeed a sad moment when we had to leave this beautiful place.

This beautiful home was absolutely the perfect place for our family of 11. This 4 bedroom and 5 bath was what we were looking for to give each of our children their own privacy. Everything about this place was perfect from the spacious living room, bar and the beautiful kitchen's with the best views of the morning sunrise!! I would recommend this beautiful place and would stay again.

Excellent We really enjoyed our stay and about two hours after we arrived we had a big ole black bear walk up the driveway toward the house and walked to the back of the property. It was an awesome experience.

Marriott Just Opened a New Hotel in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico

rooftop pool with views of old san juan puerto rico

If you’ve been to Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, you know the vibe: the pastel-hued Spanish colonial buildings; the sound of salsa permeating every corner; the refreshing cool of a freshly-made Mojito.

There’s a reason, after all, why Old San Juan is one of the most beloved places in the Caribbean, both for air arrivals and those showing up on a cruise ship at the nearby port.

What is not always easy, though, is navigating the neighborhood’s kaleidoscope of small and medium-sized hotels, all tucked into centuries old buildings with varying hospitality philosophies.

hotel rumbao room with bed and TV

Now, there is a new entry: the Hotel Rumbao, Marriott’s newest hotel in the city, and one that is a reimagining of the former Sheraton Old San Juan, which has completed a large-scale renovation by new owner Driftwood Capital, which bought the property back in 2021.

The Rumbao is now part of Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio, with 240 different rooms in a plum perch in the heart of OSJ.

puerto rico streets with colorful buildings

So what do you need to know?

There are four dining concepts, ranging from a lobby coffee shop and market to a signature eatery called Kueros, along with a fitness center and a rooftop pool and a hot tub. (Plans are also underway to add a casino).

coffee bar with high stools and windows

So what will Marriott’s newest Puerto Rico option cost you?

A sample stay beginning next week shows rates as low as $231 per night for a king-bed room. That includes a $35 dollar resort fee, according to Marriott’s Web site.

But the biggest thing here is still the location, one of the best in the area, with literally hundreds of stores and boutiques all within a short stroll, along with the neighborhood’s vibrant nightlife and inspired dining scene.

It’s a new gateway to the charms of the old city.

In Paris and Beyond, 6 Sumptuous European Hotels

For Olympics-goers and just plain vacationers, here are new accommodations that offer a special taste of France, Italy and Greece.

colonial travel inn

By Stephanie Rosenbloom

If you’re planning to attend the Paris Olympics and see a bit of Europe this summer, you have a variety of plush new hotels from which to choose (though they’re likely to fill up quickly). Whether you’re going to the Games or simply going on vacation, you’ll find fresh boutique properties in Paris and many more that are an easy flight away, be it to the French Riviera, Rome, or fittingly, an island in Greece, the birthplace of the ancient games .

Hôtel Balzac

A hotel guest room has a retro modern look, with a Deco-style sconce with simple lines and an old-fashioned bedside black phone from the first part of the 20th century. The predominant colors are off-white and brown, with a light woven brown blanket and white sheets, a round, polished wood table with a stack of books, and beyond the bed, a door opening into what looks like a small, wood-paneled bar.

Beginning June 1, after a two-year renovation, Hôtel Balzac , a member of Relais & Châteaux , the luxury hotel and restaurant network, is planning to open in the Eighth Arrondissement, within walking distance of the Champs-Élysées. Meant to feel like a Parisian home and inspired by 1930s style, the hotel is a sister property of the cozy Relais Christine in the Sixth Arrondissement, as well as the Saint James Paris in the 16th Arrondissement.

With interiors designed by Festen Architecture , there will be 58 rooms and suites in soothing neutral hues, some with views of the Eiffel Tower. Beyond your room you’ll find a lounge where you can enjoy breakfast before strolling the famous boulevard; a Japanese-inspired spa for treatments upon your return; a cocktail bar; and Pierre Gagnaire , a Michelin-starred restaurant with modern French cuisine. Prices from 590 euros, or about $630 a night.

Maison Proust

Like several of the latest hotels in Paris, such as Hotel Norman and Le Grand Mazarin , this hot spot in the Marais is an intimate affair with just 23 rooms and suites. A homage to the novelist Marcel Proust , the hotel features sumptuous spaces that conjure the Belle Époque and in them you’ll discover objects linked to the hotel’s namesake, including an autographed copy of “Swann’s Way.”

Designed by Jacques Garcia , the French interior decorator known for luxurious spaces like the Hôtel Costes in Paris and La Mamounia in Marrakech, Maison Proust is a member of the Collection Maisons Particulières , a group of hotels designed to feel like mansions. Each of the glamorous rooms are inspired by personalities from Proust’s world, including Colette and Monet.

If you can’t manage to nab one, you can still visit the bar where on Fridays, Colin Field , formerly the head bartender at Bar Hemingway at the storied Ritz Paris , is now creating cocktails (from 25 euros, or about $27) like L’Élixir de Proust, with raspberry essence and Champagne. You can also unwind at Spa La Mer , where there’s a hammam and pool.

Yet even without all that, the hotel’s location in the Marais — amid restaurants, shops and destinations like the Musée National Picasso-Paris and the Musée Carnavalet — makes it an enviable spot from which to step out and explore one of the world’s most walkable cities. Prices from €950 (with slight seasonal variation).

St.-Tropez, France

Arev saint tropez.

Within walking distance of the colorful village of St.-Tropez, this 43 room-and-suite hotel opened in March with flowering trees, a pool surrounded by striped umbrellas, and an outdoor bar where frozen rosé awaits. The popular Pampelonne Beach and its beach clubs are a brief drive away, while smaller nearby beaches offer the opportunity for a quick dip. Or stay put and indulge in a massage at the spa, head outside for a sunrise Pilates or yoga class, or hop on a Peloton bike at the fitness center. Unlike the Olympics, games at AREV Saint Tropez, like pétanque and padel , can be played in between glasses of rosé.

The rooms (some with private terraces and patios with flowers) were designed by Luis Bustamante , with splashes of blue, white and red, creating a nautical feel even when you’re not lounging by the sea. Explore outside your room and you’ll come across the Strand Restaurant and Champagne Lounge . The original Strand, a local crowd-pleaser, closed years ago, though this reincarnation at AREV Saint Tropez hopes to bring back some of the joie de vivre of its predecessor with live music, French wines and contemporary takes on regional dishes such as thon de Méditerranée, red tuna atop crispy risotto. For dessert, try the rice pudding or the chocolate soufflé. Prices from €1,440 June through August, and starting at €590 from October through March.

Nice, France

Hôtel du couvent.

Set in a convent dating to the 17th century, this 88 room-and-suite hotel plans to open in June, when it will offer guests glimpses into its monastic past. The property’s restoration is being spearheaded by Valéry Grégo, who founded Perseus , a builder and operator of hotels, including Le Pigalle in Paris. There will be a vegetable and herb garden, a bakery and an herbalist shop where you can stop in for custom-made teas with herbs from the garden.

Vegetables, fruits and eggs from both the garden and an off-site farm in Touët-sur-Var may be served at the hotel’s restaurants: Le Restaurant du Couvent, Le Bistrot des Serruriers and La Guinguette Café, where you can sip a drink in the garden near the lap pool. Wander the grounds and take advantage of the studio for yoga, exercise and meditation, or partake of a series of thermal “ Roman baths .” The baths are a nod to the remains of the Roman baths in nearby Cimiez , where you can also visit the Musée National Marc Chagall and Musée Matisse .

Return to the hotel, part of the Luxury Collection from Marriott, with interior design by Festen Architecture, and to the serene colors of your airy room. Prices from €390 a night.

On May 31, Leitmotiv — the group behind the buzzy, garden-themed La Fantaisie boutique hotel in Paris — is planning to open their first property outside of France: Casa Monti, in Rome.

The hotel is in Rome’s Monti neighborhood, dappled with cafes and restaurants, and takes its inspiration from the area’s artists, encouraging guests to think of themselves as artists in residence. Past its 18th-century facade are frescoes and 36 rooms and suites that are awash with color and bold patterns by the interior designer Laura Gonzalez . You’re within walking distance of must-see sights like the Roman Forum and the Colosseum. And upon returning from a day of exploring you can drop by the spa, linger over dinner — indoors or al fresco — at the hotel restaurant and then watch night fall from your perch on the rooftop bar. Prices from €450 a night.

Paros, Greece

Rising from the Greek island of Paros, this escape on Piperi beach blends soft sand with Cycladic cubic style architecture. The hotel has 38 rooms and suites, including some with private plunge pools. If you can manage to leave yours behind to explore the grounds, you’ll find the wellness area , where you can get a massage or body treatment outdoors in a private curtained chamber. Avant Mar’s name joins the French word for “before” with the Spanish word for “the sea,” highlighting the hotel’s location “in front of the sea,” and there’s an open-air theater that can be used for yoga and Pilates upon request, as well as an Olympics-worthy, 55-meter-long swimming pool.

Back on dry land, a gin-and-tonic bar called the Bridge plans to open the end of this month with views of the Aegean Sea. And mark your calendar for July 10 to 13 when the Japanese chef Nobu Matsuhisa will be at the hotel’s waterside restaurant, Matsuhisa Paros , for the Nobu Food Festival. (The restaurant is scheduled to open for the season on June 7). For Greek fare at the hotel, visit Thymes for breakfast, lunch or dinner by the pool. And don’t forget dessert. Stop into Figs, the hotel’s pastry shop, to get your fix of traditional Greek sweets. Prices from €715 a night.
