Dear Lord, I pray for all those out on the roads today. I pray that they will be more cautious and less distracted. Help us to navigate the jam-packed roads on our way to our destination. We shall start out on our road trips like we do any other journey in life, trusting the Lord to lead us, guide us, and keep us safe. With him, we can never be lost, and we’ll always find our way back home.

As Christians, we always want to include God in our plans in life . Maybe you or someone you know is on vacation about to go on a trip, if so pray to God for guidance and protection.

Sometimes traveling might seem scary because we’re not used to it and can’t see everything, but God can, and He will keep you safe and watch over you on your journey.

Traveling is something we all do.  Whether walking to a neighbor’s or taking an air flight to a new country, rarely does a day go by that we do not travel.

Sometimes our travels are for happy celebrations such as a sibling’s wedding, and at other times for somber occasions such as a parents’ passing.

Like all prayers, when we pray for safe travels, we pray as God calls us to.  We can praise God and petition Him on our behalf and others.

God asks us to pray for all things, for all circumstances, and to come to Him for all our needs.

How Do You Pray for Those Who Are Traveling

We know that prayer is powerful and we should pray for all things (without ceasing). But what are some ways to pray for a safe trip for yourself or a loved one?

We can pray for our own safe travel. And we can pray for the safe travel of others.

When we pray for safe travels, we are not just asking for physical protection, but also for guidance, clarity, and a smooth path ahead.

It’s an acknowledgment of the uncertainties and challenges that can arise during travel and a humble request for a shield against those potential adversities.

In praying for someone who is traveling, we want to ask God to wrap His full armor around them during every step of the way to their destination.

Prayers for Safe Travel and Protection

In any endeavor we embark upon in life, we want God to protect us from any dangers that may come our way.

When traveling, these dangers can be anything from dangerous road conditions and storms, to mechanical malfunctions of the vehicle (or plane).

Pray for a loved one’s safe travels to show God’s care for them through your intercession.

When we pray for a friend who is traveling, we are asking God to cover them in His full armor of protection.

The one thing we have in common no matter the trip is the desire for it be safe. We want to arrive there well, enjoy out time at the location and arrive home safe and sound! 

And as a woman of faith I believe praying for ourselves and loved ones during travel is a powerful thing we can do. Prayers for Safe Travel

Below you will find short prayers for traveling for all kinds of trips or journeys. They each have bible verses with them. I encourage you to use these prayers like a diving board. A place to spring off of and let your heart speak to the Lord about your trip. 

Prayer for God to Protect You While You Travel

The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in. From this time forth, and even forevermore. – Psalm 121:8 NKJV

Lord, thank you for the opportunity to be able to travel in this season. You have sustained me and my loved ones, and I am grateful. You say in Psalm 121:8 that you shall preserve my going out and coming in from this time forth and forevermore. 

Preserve my life, and get me to my destination and back home safely. I may not see the dangers along the way but I ask that you keep me away from them. Watch over my steps Lord. My life is in your hands, and I trust that you will keep me safe. 

In the mighty name of Jesus, amen and amen.

Prayer Asking For Angels To Help as You Travel

For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways. – Psalm 91:11 NKJV

Lord, you never leave me without help, and I thank you for that. You always send your angels to help your children, and you deliver them from any trouble. 

You have promised me in Psalm 91:11 that you shall give your angels charge over me to keep me in all my ways. May your angels guard me and my family as we travel, and keep us out of any unforeseen danger. 

May your angels encamp around me throughout my trip, and deliver me from any harm that may be on my way. 

I also ask Lord that you would send your angels ahead of me. That they would make my trip smooth and full of your peace.

Prayer for God’s Presence on Your Journey

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.” – Deuteronomy 31:6 NKJV

Lord, you say in Deuteronomy 31:6 that I should be strong and courageous because you go with me wherever I go, and will never leave nor forsake me. May your presence be with me as I take this journey. 

I know that when you are with me I can rest because I am safe. Your presence gives me peace as I patiently wait to get to my destination. 

When the Israelites were in the wilderness for forty years, they never made a move unless they were sure that you were leading the way. Lead me as I travel, and let me experience the joy of being in your presence. 

Prayer for Wisdom and Protection While Driving

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. – James 1:5

Lord, I praise you for your divine wisdom that is superior to my human wisdom. You have instructed me to ask you for wisdom in James 1:5 with the promise that you will give it to me. Today I ask that you give me the wisdom I need as I drive on my trip. 

Help me drive safely, to keep focus, and to avoid any dangers that could happen on the road.  Show me which routes to avoid, and how to navigate any traffic along the way.

Prayers for safe travel are used for all sorts of reasons. Whether a short day trip or just a daily commute. If a loved one is setting off on a journey, it’s only natural you want them to travel safely and arrive at their destination.

The Bible verse from Proverbs 3:21-23 speaks to this desire, asking God to store up sound wisdom for the upright and be a shield to those who walk in integrity.

Whether it’s by vehicle , train, boat, or plane, travel can bring up concerns regarding safety.  When the travel involves people in our family we love, the concern can increase dramatically. It doesn’t matter if our loved ones are behind the wheel or if there’s a pilot or other professional, the experience is still stressful. Knowing that you can lift them up in prayer can be a comforting practice, as you realize that God is present with them:

“ The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” ( Deuteronomy 31.8, NIV ).

While we know that accidents do happen , we still want to continue in hope and faith that God can, and will, keep our family safe and secure when they travel.  It doesn’t matter whether a loved one is going down the street to the store, across the state to school, or to the other side of the planet for vacation, we want them to return to us in one piece.

You may find peace and assurance as you read scripture and pray for them.  A favorite of mine has always been:

“ If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast” ( Psalm 139.9-10, NIV ).

It doesn’t matter where we go, God is already there with us.  There is no place we can go, or our loved ones can travel to, that God is not present.  Isn’t that a wonderful piece of truth to grab hold of as you pray for your family?

Prayer for Safe Travel for Mother

Dear God, I pray for my mother today.  She is set to fly from her home to come see us and she hasn’t been on an airplane in several years.  I pray for her safety at each point in her journey .  She usually has someone with her but this time she’s traveling solo.

Keep watch over her as she drives to the airport and goes through security.  Guide the plane safely here and enable the pilots to focus well as they takeoff and land.  I pray for me to be attentive as I drive to pick her up and bring her to our house.

I look forward to her visit and so I pray for her safe travel in the name of Jesus, Amen.

Lord, my dad has to travel across the country for a business meeting this week.  I ask you to keep him safe throughout the whole travel experience.  I know there’s nothing to fear and so I place him in your hands of protection.

I pray he gets the rest he needs so when he’s driving during the week, he remains focused on the traffic.  I pray for his airplane to get him there safely and return him home safely .  Strengthen his immune system as he will be around many large groups of people during this trip.

Lord Jesus, can you watch over my daughter this week?  She’s going to visit our extended family for a couple of weeks, all by herself.  It’s a nonstop flight so I’m thankful that she will not have to navigate changing planes or anything.  I just want her to arrive safe and enjoy time with the family.

I pray for her to use good judgment as she navigates the concourse here, and then the subway when she arrives there.  I ask that you surround her with your protective hand, and keep her aware of her surroundings at all times.

It’s a 15-hour trip that he says he’s going to make in one day.  Grant him refreshing sleep so he is fully attentive every hour he drives.  Keep errant vehicles away from him and may his journey be accident-free.  We just want to see him here safe and sound.

Final Thoughts

We want to not have anything happen to our loved ones, whether it’s when they are traveling , or working, or vacationing.  We don’t have to be bound up in fear or worry that something might happen.  We can lay our burdens and safety concerns at the foot of God.  We can trust that God is guiding us (and them) at every step:

” I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you” ( Psalm 32.8, NIV ).

Back in ancient times, when the Hebrew people traveled regularly to Jerusalem for the different festivals, they would ordinarily sing songs along the way.  Some of those are found in the Psalms (which means songs).  A portion of one of them is worth saying and praying for.  You may wish to memorize it as your “travel prayer.”

“ The Lord will keep you from all harm— he will watch over your life;  the Lord will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore” ( Psalm 121.7-8, NIV ).

One thing about shadows of death…they are not the reality. I’d rather get hit by the shadow of a semi than the semi itself.  The point being, we have no need to fear shadows of death.

When we travel, things may not always go as planned, but we know that “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps” (Proverbs 16:9), meaning that God will establish our steps, walk, or travels, even though we had plans that differed in the beginning.

An Adventure to Remember

Last month we embarked on a trip we’ve been planning since before we got married over 16 years ago: New Zealand ! Richard was born there and has family there, and we’ve been wanting to go for years. But it seemed like every time we tried to make the trek, something always prevented us from going, whether it was work, a new baby, health concerns, or moving.

But this year, despite going through one of our most challenging years (currently in upheaval with our home being damaged from toxic smoke from a landfill fire), we decided to go anyway. We decided, if we wait for a perfect time to travel, we’ll never go anywhere!

And honestly, it was the perfect time to go — our kids are at such a fun age (9 & 11) and old enough to always have this as a core memory. They got to meet their great-grandfather, aunties & uncles, and cousins they’ve never met before. Not to mention all the breathtaking scenery, new foods, and memorable experiences we all had. The boys even got to sit in the cockpit of our first plane as we boarded!

Since we haven’t traveled in a while and this was the longest flight I’ve ever been on (14+ hours!) I needed some tools to help me stay calm. God’s Word is at the top of the list, of course. I thought maybe you could also use some inspiring bible verses to help you stay calm and trust God as you travel!

These are the best bible verses I could find to bring peace while traveling. I have divided them into 3 categories: God’s protection, God’s guidance, and God is watching over you.

God’s protection (travel bible verses)

Deuteronomy 31:8.

It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

Psalm 32:7-8

6 Encouraging Prayers For Safe Travel

T he older I get the more I understand why my parents wanted to know when I was going to be home and who I was riding with if I wasn’t driving.  They were concerned for my safety and well-being.  Whether I was walking down the street, taking a bus trip with school/church, or just driving to a local restaurant, safety was their number one concern.  I am so grateful for my parents and the values they have instilled in me.  Here are 6 encouraging prayers for you or your loved ones who are traveling.

The Long Haul

You know the road before me.  This is a long journey I am about to take.  I pray for a safe journey these 700 miles, Lord.  I pray that if any problems come my way that Your hand would be with me and guide me through them.  I pray for the other drivers on the road with me.  Father, I pray for good rest for us all and that cell phones will be put away so no distractions take our eyes off of the road.  Lord, You are mighty and I love You!  Amen

I’m The Passenger

I thank you so much for Your everlasting love for me!  Guide my friend, John, as he takes us to the convention this weekend.  The journey isn’t too long, but traffic will be a mess and trying to find parking may be a problem.  Father, guide his mind, hands and feet to deliver us safely to our destination.  I place this journey in Your hands.  I love You!  Amen

Uncertainties

Blessed Lord,

Technology seems to bring us more trouble at times and I have no service for my GPS right now.  I’ve pulled over to ask You to help me stay calm.  I don’t know the area I am in at all and I don’t have a map.  Father, please guide me to somewhere safe where I can ask for directions.  Lord, I get scared when I don’t know where I am at and I need You right now!  Thank You for Your love and protection over me!  Amen

For Family Coming To My Place

I am excited with the anticipation of seeing my cousins and aunts and uncles for our family Christmas party.  Lord, the roads aren’t the best and there are many icy spots.  Lord, I have everything ready here.  I have the turkey in the oven and all the sides ready to go.  I have the rooms ready for my family to sleep in.  I have games and movies ready.  The only thing I am missing is my loved ones.  They are not here yet, but I know Your hand is with them.  Please guide them here safely.  Lord, keep the deer off of the roads and please keep other drivers alert.  I love You, Father!  Amen

Father in Heaven,

I just want to say “thank You” to all of the men and women who are on the road every single day delivering goods to our stores so we have food and clothing.  Lord, they go through so much stress making sure their freight is delivered on time.  When hazardous conditions arise I pray You keep them safe.  When they are running behind, give them Your peace in the moment.  Father, I pray for safe journeys for our truck drivers.  Without them I don’t know where we would be.  I am so grateful for the time they put in on the road.  Father I pray that You also deliver them home safely to their families on their days off.  Father, You are so awesome and I love You!  Amen

Tips for wishing someone a safe journey

Goodbyes are often emotional and can be overwhelming, especially when they take place at the airport or at the station. These tips can make saying farewell that much easier.

• Don’t leave your goodbye until the last minute. If you want to make it meaningful, make sure you set aside enough time to say everything you want to say.

Chaos and Confusion: Tech Outage Causes Disruptions Worldwide

Airlines, hospitals and people’s computers were affected after CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity company, sent out a flawed software update.

Airlines grounded flights. Operators of 911 lines could not respond to emergencies. Hospitals canceled surgeries. Retailers closed for the day. And the actions all traced back to a batch of bad computer code.

A flawed software update sent out by a little-known cybersecurity company caused chaos and disruption around the world on Friday. The company, CrowdStrike , based in Austin, Texas, makes software used by multinational corporations, government agencies and scores of other organizations to protect against hackers and online intruders.

But when CrowdStrike sent its update on Thursday to its customers that run Microsoft Windows software, computers began to crash.

The fallout, which was immediate and inescapable, highlighted the brittleness of global technology infrastructure. The world has become reliant on Microsoft and a handful of cybersecurity firms like CrowdStrike. So when a single flawed piece of software is released over the internet, it can almost instantly damage countless companies and organizations that depend on the technology as part of everyday business.

“This is a very, very uncomfortable illustration of the fragility of the world’s core internet infrastructure,” said Ciaran Martin, the former chief executive of Britain’s National Cyber Security Center and a professor at the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University.

A cyberattack did not cause the widespread outage, but the effects on Friday showed how devastating the damage can be when a main artery of the global technology system is disrupted. It raised broader questions about CrowdStrike’s testing processes and what repercussions such software firms should face when flaws in their code cause major disruptions.

How a Software Update Crashed Computers Around the World

While outages are common, often caused by technical errors or cyberattacks, the scale of what unfolded on Friday was unparalleled.

“This is historic,” said Mikko Hypponen, the chief research officer at WithSecure, a cybersecurity company. “We haven’t had an incident like this.”

George Kurtz, CrowdStrike’s chief executive, said that the company took responsibility for the mistake and that a software fix had been released. He warned that it could be some time before tech systems returned to normal.

“We’re deeply sorry for the impact that we’ve caused to customers, to travelers, to anyone affected by this,” he said in an interview on Friday on NBC’s “Today” show.

Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s chief executive, blamed CrowdStrike and said the company was working to help customers “bring their systems back online.” Apple and Linux machines were not affected by the CrowdStrike software update.

A White House official said the administration was in “regular contact” with CrowdStrike and had convened agencies to assess the impact of the outage on the federal government’s operations.

CrowdStrike, founded in 2011 by Mr. Kurtz and others, has built a reputation over the years as a firm that could solve even the toughest security problems. It was tapped to investigate a 2014 hack of Sony Pictures and the 2016 hack of the Democratic National Committee, which exposed Hillary Clinton’s emails.

But problems stemming from CrowdStrike’s products have surfaced before. In April, the company pushed a software update to customers running the Linux system that crashed computers, according to an internal CrowdStrike report sent to customers about the incident, which was obtained by The New York Times.

The bug, which did not appear to be related to Friday’s outage, took CrowdStrike nearly five days to fix, the report said. CrowdStrike promised to improve its testing process going forward, according to the report.

On Thursday, the tech issues began when Microsoft dealt with an outage on its cloud service system, Azure, which affected some airlines .

Then CrowdStrike sent an update for its software called Falcon Sensor , which scans a computer for intrusions and signs of hacking. If everything had gone according to plan, CrowdStrike’s software would have received minor improvements and customers would have hardly noticed.

Instead, when CrowdStrike’s faulty update reached computers running Microsoft Windows, it caused the machines to shut down and then endlessly reboot. Workers around the world were greeted with what is known as the “blue screen of death” on their computers. Insufficient testing at CrowdStrike was a likely source of the problem, experts said.

As computers restarted themselves over and over, known as the “doom loop,” there was little CrowdStrike could do to fix the problem. Tech staff at affected companies were faced with a choice: walk around to each machine and remove the bit of flawed code, or wait and hope for a solution from CrowdStrike.

The problems cascaded instantly. At Sydney Airport in Australia, travelers encountered delays and cancellations, as did those in Hong Kong, India, Dubai, Berlin and Amsterdam. At least five U.S. airlines — Allegiant Air, American, Delta, Spirit and United — grounded all flights for a time, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Health care systems were crippled, forcing hospitals to cancel noncritical surgeries. In the United States, 911 lines went down in multiple states, though many of those problems were being resolved later on Friday. Britain’s National Health Service also reported issues.

“We knew we had a catastrophe on our hands,” said B.J. Moore, the chief information officer for Providence Health, which has 52 hospitals in seven states. He said 15,000 servers were down and 40,000 out of Providence’s 150,000 computers were affected, adding that it was “worse than a cyberattack."

The United Parcel Service and FedEx said they were affected. Customers with TD Bank, one of the biggest banks in the United States, reported issues accessing their online accounts. Several state and municipal court systems closed for the day because of the outage.

At CrowdStrike, engineers described an atmosphere of confusion as the company struggled to contain the damage.

Executives urged employees not to speculate on why the mistake happened and directed them to focus on a fix for the computers that were affected, said two engineers who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Computers not connected to the cloud required a physical fix to the error introduced by CrowdStrike, they said, which could take weeks.

Within several hours of the faulty software going out, CrowdStrike sent out a software patch as a fix that would stop computers from endlessly rebooting.

Lukasz Olejnik, an independent cybersecurity researcher and consultant, said the outage would still take time to resolve because a suggested solution for some organizations involved rebooting each computer manually into safe mode, deleting a specific file and then restarting the computer.

While that is a relatively straightforward process, security experts said, it may not be easy to do at scale. Those with organized and well-staffed information technology teams could potentially fix the issues more quickly, Mr. Olejnik said.

Unlike the iPhone software updates that Apple sends to customers, the incident highlighted information technology systems that operate in the background. The CrowdStrike issues were compounded because the software being updated performed critical cybersecurity tasks, giving it access to scan a computer to look for viruses and other malicious attacks.

Cybersecurity tools operate quietly in the background to defend computers against attacks. The software is frequently updated with new defenses as hackers develop fresh methods of attack, but constant updates mean there are many opportunities for mistakes to happen.

“One of the tricky parts of security software is it needs to have absolute privileges over your entire computer in order to do its job,” said Thomas Parenty, a cybersecurity consultant and a former U.S. National Security Agency analyst. “So if there’s something wrong with it, the consequences are vastly greater than if your spreadsheet doesn’t work.”

On Friday, the stock price of CrowdStrike, which reported $3 billion in annual revenue last year, closed down 11 percent.

The company faces questions about what liabilities it and other software makers face for major disruptions and cybersecurity incidents. The consequences for significant outages can be so minimal that companies are not motivated to make more fundamental changes, experts said. While a car manufacturer would face stiff penalties for faulty brakes, a software provider can often issue another update and move on.

“Until software companies have to pay a price for faulty products, we will be no safer tomorrow than we are today,” Mr. Parenty said.

The inside story of how Trump chose JD Vance as his running mate

MILWAUKEE — With the clock ticking to the Republican National Convention last week, Donald Trump met privately to discuss his running mate search with two of his closest advisers: his sons. 

The conversation quickly turned tense when the former president indicated that he was leaning toward Doug Burgum , until recently the largely unknown governor of North Dakota — but someone whose low-maintenance, no-drama personality would never threaten to outshine Trump.

That’s when Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump chimed in.

“Don Jr. and Eric went bats--- crazy: ‘Why would you do something so stupid? He offers us nothing,’” a longtime Republican operative familiar with the discussion told NBC News.

“They were basically all like ‘JD, JD, JD,’” the operative said.

Trump ratified his sons’ recommendation here Monday, selecting Sen. JD Vance of Ohio as his vice presidential candidate. Trump called Vance with the news 20 minutes before announcing it on social media, a source familiar with the call said.

In choosing Vance, Trump made a different calculation than he did in 2016 and leaned fully into his MAGA base. Back then, he looked to his daughter and her husband — the more establishment-friendly Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner — for strategic advice. This time, his red meat-throwing sons have a more central role. And instead of going with a longtime traditional Republican like Mike Pence, Trump chose the MAGA warrior Vance. 

The next generation’s push was among the factors that elevated a 39-year-old Marine Corps veteran less than two years into his first Senate term over more seasoned politicians like Burgum and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida. Interviews with more than 20 sources familiar with the closely guarded process reveal a decision that rewarded youth, loyalty and an ability to reinforce Trump’s strength in the industrial and Midwest states he lost to President Joe Biden in 2020.

“Biden’s policies have devastated the working-class family,” Jai Chabria, an Ohio-based strategist who has been with Vance since the beginning of his young political career, said. “There’s probably not a person in the Republican Party who can speak to that issue better than JD.” 

While Vance’s selection illustrates the ascendancy of younger right-wing leaders like Charlie Kirk, who also pushed for Vance to be chosen, it carries risks for Trump. Vance, who turns 40 next month, would be the third-youngest U.S. vice president if elected. He has a history of hard-line positions on issues such as abortion. And he has a reputation for hot rhetoric at a time when national leaders, including Trump, are urging cooler heads in the wake of the assassination attempt on Trump last week in Pennsylvania.

The other finalists had different strengths that kept them under consideration — and weaknesses that hurt their chances. 

Rubio, a foreign policy wonk who speaks Spanish, was seen by many as the contender most capable of bringing more Hispanic voters and suburban women to Trump’s coalition. But a handful of complications torpedoed his chances.

Rubio and Trump both live in Florida, posing a potential constitutional hang-up unless one of them established residency in a different state — and even then raising issues that made campaign officials nervous. That was Rubio’s main obstacle, two people familiar with the process said. But the sources did not say Rubio would have been chosen without the Florida issue.

It was “the hurdle the president couldn’t get over,” one of the sources said. It was “not worth the legal challenges.”

Burgum, a former software entrepreneur, had come out of nowhere as a top prospect after running his own long-shot campaign for president. He endorsed Trump on the eve of the Iowa caucuses and became a trusted surrogate. Trump’s wife, Melania, was a Burgum fan, according to a source close to the former first lady. His personal wealth could have been an asset, too, though two sources close to Burgum said he was never asked to help self-fund a Trump-Burgum ticket and that he never offered. 

But Burgum’s signature last year on a bill that banned nearly all abortions in North Dakota emerged as a liability. Trump, like Burgum, has said abortion is an issue best left to states. When it came to his state, Burgum enacted a law stricter than the one that Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed — and that Trump called a “terrible mistake.”

“Well, it’s a little bit of an issue,” Trump replied when asked Wednesday during an interview with Fox News’ Brian Kilmeade if the North Dakota law hurt Burgum’s prospects.

'The Apprentice' for real

Behind the scenes, Trump and his team started with a list of nearly two dozen possible running mates, before whittling it down and, over the last six weeks of the process, focusing tightly on Vance, Burgum and Rubio. 

The only two people directly involved for most of the process were Trump himself and top adviser Susie Wiles. At times, those being vetted were told whom they could talk to and what they could say as a way to further minimize leaks. That created an information vacuum filled by near daily rumors.

Kellyanne Conway, a longtime Trump adviser, pushed several candidates for vice president, three sources apprised of her lobbying said. At one point, those familiar with the process saw her as aligned closely with Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina. But the day after the Daily Beast reported that Conway was assisting Scott, she was seen with Rubio on Capitol Hill. And several observers saw Conway’s fingerprints when Sen. Bill Hagerty of Tennessee was floated quietly — and somewhat randomly — as a late potential contender.“It did not help early on that there was a sense he was getting others to sort of prop up his name,” said a Republican operative familiar with the Trump campaign’s thinking on Hagerty. “It was well noticed. And it’s fair to say it did not help him.”

Trump and a close orbit of staffers would ask “almost anyone who met with them” who the pick should be, the operative said. 

“If you met with him, he was going to ask you,” the person added, referring to Trump.

External factors — from a judge delaying Trump’s sentencing on 34 felony counts to a poor Biden debate performance that alarmed Democrats — kept pushing back Trump’s timeline to make and announce a decision. The Republican National Committee also looked into every possible way to delay the vice presidential announcement until Wednesday, since Trump and his team hoped to keep the suspense going. But ultimately, officials decided it had to be done in time for Monday’s roll call vote. 

Trump, for his part, likened the process to a high-stakes game show, not unlike the reality TV program he presided over for years on NBC.

It’s “like a highly sophisticated version of ‘The Apprentice,’” Trump said Friday during an interview on “The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show.”

Uncertainty remained in the days leading up to the announcement. 

A rally last Tuesday near Miami fueled speculation that Rubio was about to be picked. Attendees read into one potential clue: the seating chart.

“His chair was right next to the stage, and everyone noticed. There were texts flying around the consultant world saying, like, ‘Do you see where his chair is?’” said a person familiar with the frenzy of the night. “Everyone was also pointing to the fact that Barron [Trump] was there, and was like, ‘It’s got to be Marco.’”

The event came and went with plenty of Trump’s teasing, running commentary from the stage that Rubio was in the running, but no announcement. 

Trump then checked in with each of his three finalists, one-on-one — Burgum by phone, Rubio and Vance during meetings at his Mar-a-Lago resort late last week, sources familiar with the conversations said. 

In his meeting with Trump, Rubio addressed the residency obstacle, saying he “didn’t want to be responsible” for plunging Trump’s campaign into “uncharted territory,” a source familiar with the conversation said. It wasn’t Rubio taking himself out of the running, exactly, but it was an acknowledgment of the complication.

More speculation sprouted up around Trump’s rally Saturday in Butler, Pennsylvania — not far from the Ohio border and packed with white, working-class voters like the ones Vance wrote about in his best-selling 2016 memoir, “Hillbilly Elegy.” 

The rally ultimately added another level of uncertainty: Would Trump, who survived an attempt on his life there, ask those voters to make someone so young next in line to the presidency?

A well-placed fan of 'Hillbilly Elegy'

Vance had hurdles other than age to overcome. As he toured the country in 2016 to promote his book, later adapted into an Oscar-nominated film, he became a prominent Trump critic and acknowledged voting for independent Evan McMullin for president that year.

He shed his skepticism over time, telling friends that while he had concerns about Trump’s tone and demeanor, he had come to admire him and agree with his policies. Even so, his history of Trump-bashing presented a potential barrier to his 2022 Senate campaign. Rivals in a crowded GOP primary were eager to weaponize the past comments, and Vance’s team quickly made efforts to neutralize them. 

“Trump had every excuse in the world to not endorse JD,” a person close to Vance said.

An early meeting at Mar-a-Lago with Trump, Trump Jr. and tech entrepreneur Peter Thiel, a key Vance booster, helped clear the air. 

It began with “10 minutes of President Trump busting JD’s chops,” the person close to Vance said. Trump, who had enjoyed Vance’s recent appearances on Fox News, then moved onto other topics.

Trump, by that point appreciating Vance’s zeal of the convert and seeing it as valuable testimonial to other past critics, eventually endorsed him in the primary. After the race was called, Vance received a congratulatory FaceTime call from Trump Jr., who was puffing a huge celebratory cigar, according to a source who witnessed the call. The eldest Trump son, who had been a fan of “Hillbilly Elegy” before the campaign, had come to like Vance personally, and the two developed a close friendship after Vance won his Senate race. The bond between Vance and Trump world was growing stronger — and it tightened in early 2023, when Vance helped Trump’s team organize a visit to East Palestine, Ohio, site of a toxic train derailment. On the plane to Ohio, Trump watched Vance do a live Fox News hit and said aloud to his traveling party: “This guy has really been f---ing incredible,” a source briefed on the exchange recalled.

Vance had no master plan to quickly elevate himself as a candidate for vice president, a source close to him said. It wasn’t until late 2023, when media reports began identifying him as a possible Trump running mate, that the idea even began to register to him and his team. Around that time, Vance traveled to Mar-a-Lago to pitch Trump on endorsing Bernie Moreno, a Republican Senate candidate facing another competitive primary in Ohio. 

“There he is: JD Vance, everybody’s talking about him,” Trump said as Vance entered the room, according to a source familiar with the meeting. “He’s hot right now. He’s a hot one.”

Months later, when it became clear he was among Trump’s top prospects, Vance, his wife and his political team wrestled over the idea of positioning himself for the job, the source close to Vance said. Although Vance was enjoying life in the Senate, he was game for the opportunity.

His strategists began booking him for more TV interviews, including with mainstream outlets like CNN that they found adversarial to right-leaning politicians. And Vance, in an effort to quell concerns about his fundraising prowess, stepped up his efforts to raise money for Trump, including a full-court press on tech entrepreneur David Sacks, with whom he organized a Silicon Valley fundraiser that brought in $12 million. 

“Your biggest viewed weakness is fundraising,” the person close to Vance recalled telling him. “So let’s take that talking point off the table before they can even use it against you and show that it’s bulls----. In other words, let’s head that argument off at the pass.”

Back to the beginning

Vance received his vetting questionnaire from Trump’s campaign via a text message more than six weeks ago, a source familiar with the process said. In the final stages of the search late last month, a campaign representative visited Vance at his home in Cincinnati and interviewed him during a 3 ½-hour drive to a Trump fundraiser in Cleveland, the source added.

But his status as the front-runner may have crystallized after Trump’s June 27 debate with Biden. Biden, 81, is more than three and a half years Trump's senior, but looked and sounded older that night and in subsequent public appearances that raised questions about his health and fitness to serve another four years.

If Biden steps aside, as many Democrats have called on him to do, some close to Trump see a scenario in which Vice President Kamala Harris is the nominee and picks Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro or a Midwesterner as her running mate. Vance, with his appeal to blue-collar, industrial-belt voters, could fortify the GOP ticket against such a move. 

The final days of the search involved a last-minute rush of knife-fighting among Trump world insiders and outsiders pushing for a particular contender — and in some cases pushing to block Vance’s selection. Conway in particular was vehemently opposed to Vance and made her opinion known to Trump, three sources familiar with the discussions said. 

Conway acknowledged in text and telephone exchanges that Vance was not her preference.

“I thought Rubio or [Virginia Gov. Glenn] Youngkin could get him more unique voters or help expand the map, and that he’ll need young ‘America First’ fighters like Vance in the U.S. Senate,” Conway said. 

But even as he gave a thorough look to other options, Trump kept returning to Vance, who had long been at the top of his list. 

“He went back to where he was at the beginning,” Conway said.

The efforts to diminish Vance were reminiscent of the push to keep Trump from endorsing him in the Senate primary two years earlier. But those rehashing Vance’s old comments weren’t telling Trump or his advisers anything they didn’t already know or hadn’t already factored into their calculations.

“I have been having flashbacks to the JD primary endorsement process,” a person close to Vance said. 

In the end, Vance’s allies and advocates viewed Burgum as the main competition — and the one who proved to be the toughest to dispatch. Last week, The Wall Street Journal and the New York Post ran editorials pumping up Burgum’s candidacy, and former George W. Bush strategist Karl Rove talked up Burgum during an appearance on Fox News. It was a trifecta from Rupert Murdoch’s media empire, which Trump hadn’t quite forgiven for being an early booster of DeSantis’ failed presidential campaign. 

Rove, a villain to many in Trump’s MAGA movement, may have been the final straw. Trump Jr. promptly shared with his father a Breitbart News article highlighting Rove’s Burgum praise. 

It did not, according to a source familiar with the exchange, go over well.

Trump rally shooter appears to have acted alone, FBI says

“Suspicious devices” were found in his home and vehicle, but agents see no immediate ideology.

BETHEL PARK, Pa. — The FBI said Sunday that investigators have not yet identified any ideology fueling the gunman who fired at former president Donald Trump at a packed campaign rally, and they believe he carried out the horrifying assassination attempt on his own.

The gunman was identified as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, of Bethel Park, a strong math student in high school who was working as a nursing home employee.

Seconds after he opened fire from a rooftop outside the rally’s security perimeter Saturday evening, using an AR-style rifle that was legally purchased by his father, he was fatally shot by the Secret Service, authorities said.

“At this time, the information that we have indicates that the shooter acted alone and that there are currently no public safety concerns,” FBI special agent in charge Kevin Rojek said in a telephone briefing. “At present we have not identified an ideology associated with the subject, but I want to remind everyone that we’re still very early in this investigation.”

Officials said they had not reached any final conclusions and are still scrutinizing Crooks’s associates to see if anyone aided his violent plan.

The wounding of a former president and presumptive nominee at the outdoor event in Butler, Pa., shocked the nation and brought calls for calmer political rhetoric on the eve of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. It also sparked significant questions about what security lapses allowed the gunman to get onto the roof undetected.

At the White House, President Biden pledged that every measure would be taken to get to the bottom of the attack, and he urged the public to give the FBI time to properly investigate before reaching conclusions.

Speaking from the Oval Office on Sunday night, Biden said the country needs “to lower the temperature,” adding: “Politics must never be a literal battlefield or, God forbid, a literal killing field.”

While authorities have not given details of Trump’s injuries, the former president said in a post on Truth Social that he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.”

The bullets that missed Trump still proved deadly. One spectator was killed , and two others were critically injured in the attack.

Rojek identified the firearm used in the attack as an AR-style rifle chambered in 5.56mm, a common caliber for such weapons. The gunman’s family, the FBI said, is cooperating with investigators. Other law enforcement officials said the weapon helped investigators identify the dead gunman after ATF agents quickly tracked down the gun purchase paperwork.

During a search of a vehicle used by the gunman, agents found a “rudimentary” suspected explosive device, officials said. “We have seized the device, rendered it safe, and we are also in the process of analyzing that further,” Rojek said. In a later update, the FBI said suspicious devices were found in his home and vehicle, and both were rendered safe by bomb technicians.

FBI officials said they have reviewed some of the gunman’s recent electronic communications and hope his cellphone will provide more such evidence.

Officials said he did not have a history of interactions with law enforcement or of mental illness, and they had yet to find any accounts of him making threats. Former classmates described him as kind, polite and smart.

Lacking a clear sign of his motive, investigators searched for every scrap of potential evidence. The shooter’s phone was sent to technical experts at FBI labs in Quantico, Va. His vehicle was towed to undergo further examination. And his online activity, which so far appears sparse and inconclusive, will be carefully examined.

“We are investigating this as an assassination attempt but also looking at it as a potential domestic terrorism attack,” senior FBI official Robert Wells said. The FBI urged anyone with relevant information to submit it to the agency.

The gunman worked as a dietary aide at Bethel Park Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in the Pittsburgh suburb of about 34,000 people located about 40 miles south of Butler.

Crooks “performed his job without concern, and his background check was clean,” the administrator of the facility said in a statement.

“A quiet kid” is how Sarah D’Angelo, 20, remembered the teenager she saw before 7:30 a.m. almost every school day for years at Bethel Park High School. Organized by their last names, they sat a few chairs apart.

He would arrive on time and spend most of the 20-minute period either finishing homework or playing video games on his computer, D’Angelo recalled. They hardly talked, D’Angelo said, mostly because it was early and everyone was tired.

“He was nice to anyone he talked to,” D’Angelo said.

D’Angelo said that Crooks did not appear to have many friends, but that he also did not strike her as particularly lonely. He was good at math, “a calculus-type person,” she said. A local media outlet’s list of graduates of Bethel Park High School in 2022 listed Crooks as one of 20 students to have received a $500 prize for math and science from the school that year.

“There were a few people that were more violent in school,” D’Angelo said. “He was not one of those kids.”

On Sunday, she found herself thinking about their final project in honors American history, which was about the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Their teacher instructed them to determine what they thought happened — including how many gunmen there were, and where they hid to fire the fatal shots.

Summer Barkley, 19, who lives in Bethel Park, remembered Crooks as a quiet, polite and intelligent student in her freshman history class. “He didn’t talk a lot, but when he did, it was never anything negative,” Barkley said.

“Our history teacher could always count on him to be able to talk about different things about history, know his facts,” she said.

Barkley said she saw Crooks at high school frequently until the pandemic hit during the spring of their sophomore year. Classes went online for the rest of the semester and then to a hybrid model.

She was with a group of friends Saturday night playing video games when she heard he had been identified as the gunman.

“Our jaws were open because we just couldn’t believe it,” she said. “I’m not excusing anything he did, but it was a shock to see someone who was nice to me in high school and got good grades and things like that to have such a horrible outcome.

“It was just something that was never something we could have seen coming. It was not at all something where we were like, ‘Okay, maybe I can see his behavior here, or something like that.’”

According to state records, Crooks was registered as a Republican, though campaign finance records show that someone with his name and street address gave $15 to the Progressive Turnout Project, a Democratic voter-turnout organization, in January 2021.

An initial review of online social media platforms revealed little about the shooter. Discord, the online gaming chat platform, said Sunday that it had removed a “rarely utilized” account that was linked to him.

“We have found no evidence that it was used to plan this incident, promote violence or discuss his political views,” said Clint Smith, Discord’s chief legal officer. Discord is cooperating with law enforcement, Smith said.

Bethel Park residents described the borough as a tightknit community made up of small-business owners and self-described family men who like to talk about their children but not politics.

The fire department consists entirely of volunteers, said Stephen Diethorn, 66, who with his wife owns Ma and Pop’s diner. “People like to help each other, and they like to get along.”

By early Sunday, authorities had sealed off the area around the shooter’s home. Fire department vehicles restricted access for several blocks, allowing only residents and investigators to enter.

In the streets outside that area, the neighborhood seemed apolitical, with no yard signs for any cause or candidate.

But Diethorn, the diner owner, said he had noticed political tension intensifying somewhat in recent years.

Last year, he had to come out from the kitchen to break up an argument between a man who supported President Biden and another who liked Trump. They were yelling. He encouraged them to “be civil.”

Then a few months ago, a man who rides his bicycle around town in a colonial outfit and with a big Trump sign decided to park outside the diner. Diethorn asked him to move across the street. He didn’t want anything controversial to discourage business.

The separation between food and politics collapsed Sunday morning, as the TV mounted above the four pots of coffee flashed pictures of the former president bleeding from the ear next to the words “Bethel Park.”

“To see a statement talking about [Bethel Park] High School on TV, it’s insane, like out of a movie or something” said customer Tony Serkis, 51. “Unfortunately, it is scarring this community right here.”

Serkis, a lifelong conservative who works in IT, credits Trump with pushing economic policies during his first term that helped Serkis and his family. They were supposed to go to the rally Saturday, but scheduling conflicts prevented them from attending.

Serkis said he grew up with close friends who were liberal and thinks it is important for people who have differences to be able to talk to each other. “We’ve lost that,” he said. “I mean, someone tried to assassinate a former president.”
