Presidents Cup teams: Captain's picks in full for US and International Team

Presidents Cup teams: Check out who has joined the automatic qualifiers for the US and the International side as Jim Furyk and Mike Weir name wildcards.

Teams for the 2024 Presidents Cup have now been finalised after Jim Furyk and his counterpart Mike Weir named their captain's picks. 

Team USA captain Furyk and International skipper confirmed their six captain's picks in a news conference on 3 September.

This year's Presidents Cup will be played over 24-29 September at Royal Montreal Golf Club in Quebec, Canada. 

Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Wyndham Clark, Sahith Theegala qualified automatically for the US side after their impressive performances on the PGA Tour. 

Meanwhile, Weir's top six included Hideki Matsuyama, Sungjae Im, Jason Day, Adam Scott, Byeong Hun An and Tom Kim. 

American Billy Horschel was among those disappointed to miss out . 

Weir's captain's picks caught the golf world by surprise. 

Canadian duo Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin were surprise omissions, along with Australia's Cam Davis. 

Furyk was put on full blast over his six picks. 

He decided not to pick Justin Thomas. 

Akshay Bhatia can also count himself unfortunate to miss out.

Are LIV Golf members eligible?

No, because the Presidents Cup falls under the umbrella of the PGA Tour . 

This likely hurts the International Team more than the U.S.

Players such as Joaquin Niemann , Cameron Smith and Louis Oosthuizen are all unavailable despite appearing in previous contests. 

The American team will be without the likes of Bryson DeChambeau , Brooks Koepka , Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed .

Could Justin Thomas or Tiger Woods be named a Presidents Cup captain’s assistant?

Keegan Bradley already planned to be at The Royal Montreal Golf Club for the Presidents Cup later this month. He just thought it would be as a U.S. Team captain’s assistant, a role he accepted shortly after he became the next U.S. Ryder Cup captain earlier this summer.

That all changed after the BMW Championship where Keegan Bradley won to keep his PGA TOUR season alive and, as it turns out, secure one of Jim Furyk’s captain’s picks as a player for the U.S. Team.

“Well, I guess we'd all have to be pretty honest about it. He almost didn't make it to the BMW, correct? I think he was 50th going in there, the last guy in the field, and then goes for a wire-to-wire victory. That definitely caught a lot of folks' eyes,” Furyk said.

“I think my assistant captains, the leaders on the team, knowing that a guy's season is on the line, his back is to the wall and he goes out there and performs under the ultimate pressure, I think at that point those guys were – one by one, it seemed to them it was a foregone conclusion that he was joining our team.”

Furyk confirmed Bradley’s role in Canada will be solely to play and help the U.S. extend its winning streak over the Internationals. He also confirmed he would be looking for a new captain’s assistant.

Furyk declined to delve into specifics about who he may look to fill Bradley’s seat. Pressed for whether it could be someone with previous captain experience or possibly someone who narrowly missed out on a captain’s pick, Furyk said, “I'm not even going to hint.”

That vagueness will certainly lead to speculation. Justin Thomas’ omission from Furyk’s six captains picks was the surprise of the day. Furyk picked Nos. 7-12 on the Presidents Cup standings – Bradley, Sam Burns, Tony Finau, Russell Henley, Brian Harman and Max Homa. Thomas was 19th in the standings.

Thomas hasn’t missed a U.S. national team event since the 2016 Ryder Cup. Could he keep that streak alive, but as an assistant captain this time around?

What about Tiger Woods? Woods was a playing captain for the U.S. during the last international Presidents Cup in Australia in 2019. He was an assistant at the 2016 Ryder Cup and 2017 Presidents Cup. Woods was also the favorite to be the 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain before he declined the role and the PGA of America pivoted to Bradley. Furyk said Tuesday he did not consult Woods about his captain’s pick selections.

“Tiger and I have been friendly over the years, but I didn't give him a call to talk about the picks at all,” Furyk said.

Furyk did not put a timeline on a decision to name a new assistant captain, but it’s expected those plans will need to come together quickly. The U.S. Team is scheduled to arrive in Montreal for Presidents Cup preparations in less than three weeks.

International Team Captain Mike Weir announces six picks for 2024 Presidents Cup

MONTREAL, Quebec, Canada – The International Team for the 2024 Presidents Cup was finalized today, with International Team Captain Mike Weir selecting six players to round out his 12-player team. Weir selected South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout, Canada’s Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith and Mackenzie Hughes, South Korea’s Si Woo Kim and Australia’s Min Woo Lee. This marks the first time in Presidents Cup history in which three Canadian players will compete for the International Team. The Presidents Cup returns to The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal the week of Sept. 24-29, 2024. Of the six captain’s picks, Hughes and Lee are first-time participants, with Kim making his Presidents Cup debut in 2017, and Bezuidenhout, Conners and Pendrith doing so in 2022. In total, five countries are represented on the International Team: Australia, Canada, Japan, South Africa and the South Korea.

CHRISTIAAN BEZUIDENHOUT Country: South Africa Age: 30 Best PGA TOUR Finish: 2, The American Express (2024); T2, John Deere Classic (2022) Presidents Cup: 1 (2022) / 1-0-1 2024 Highlights: Recorded a season-best runner-up finish at The American Express, where he lost to Nick Dunlap by one shot. Owns a career-best 12 top-25 finishes on the PGA TOUR this season, including three top-10s. Captain Weir on Bezuidenhout: “Christiaan is having the best year of his PGA TOUR career and it’s exciting to watch him cement his name alongside all of the great South Africans who have competed in multiple Presidents Cups. He is incredibly steady on and off the golf course and is a player whose game will mesh well with any partner on the International Team.”

COREY CONNERS Country: Canada Age: 32 PGA TOUR Wins: 2 Presidents Cup: 1 (2022) / 0-4-0 2024 Highlights: Has notched three top-10 finishes in 2024 including a season-best, solo-sixth-place effort at the RBC Canadian Open. Captain Weir on Conners: “Corey is one of the best ball-strikers on the PGA TOUR and his ability to consistently put himself and his playing partner in a position to attack is invaluable in team competition. He has looked towards the 2024 Presidents Cup for two years now, and I know he’s eager to compete in front of his fellow Canadians.” MACKENZIE HUGHES Country: Canada Age: 33 PGA TOUR Wins: 2 Presidents Cup: First Appearance 2024 Highlights: Has recorded three top-10 finishes including a season-best T3 at the Valspar Championship. Only missed four cuts in 22 starts, marking a career best. Captain Weir on Hughes: “Canadian golf fans have followed Mackenzie’s career for nearly two decades and it’s incredible to know he’s going to make his Presidents Cup debut in his home country. He is steady and calm under pressure and is without doubt one of the best putters on the PGA TOUR, which is a great combination for our team.”

SI WOO KIM Country: South Korea Age: 29 PGA TOUR Wins: 4 Presidents Cup: 2 (2017, 2022) / 4-3-0 2024 Highlights: Recorded two top-10 finishes including a T6 at THE PLAYERS Championship and a T5 at the BMW Championship. Finished 32nd in the FedExCup to narrowly miss on advancing to the TOUR Championship for the third time in his career. Captain Weir on Kim: “Si Woo brings a wealth of experience to our team room, as well as a great record in the Presidents Cup. 2024 Presidents Cup teams: Max Homa, Keegan Bradley lead U.S. captain's picks; Internationals choose Canadians

A record number of canadians will play on home soil at the biennial event scheduled for later this month.

United States captain Jim Furyk and International captain Mike Weir made their respective 2024 Presidents Cup teams official on Tuesday. Both Furyk and Weir announced their six captain's picks to go along with the six automatic qualifiers for the competition set to take place at Royal Montreal Golf Club from Sept. 26-29.

Furyk followed the standings to the letter selecting Sam Burns, Tony Finau, Russell Henley, Keegan Bradley, Brian Harman and Max Homa, who finished the qualifying period ranked Nos. 7-12. Originally pegged as an assistant captain, Bradley will now stick a peg in the ground as a player instead.

"When I named Keegan as a captain's assistant for the Presidents Cup, I knew there was a chance he would play his way onto the U.S. team, and I can say without a doubt he did just that," Furyk said. "The grit he showed in the final round in Memphis, followed by the win in Denver, exemplified the competitive nature he has always played with, and I know he will bring that same fire to Royal Montreal in a few weeks."

Weir used half his picks to select his fellow Canadians in Corey Conners, Taylor Pendrith and Mackenzie Hughes. Hughes, who will be making his Presidents Cup debut, finished 15th in the standings behind countrymen Nick Taylor and Adam Hadwin. Still, he received a nod from the headman. 

The other three selections were used on Australian Min Woo Lee, another debutant, as well as South Korean Si Woo Kim and South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout. The latter two were on the team at Quail Hollow in 2022. Kim was the leading points getter in 2022 finishing 3-1-0, while Bezuidenhout went 1-0-1 in his first appearance.

Burns will likely team up with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler for most of the competition, while Finau finds himself as one of the more tenured players alongside Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay making his third Presidents Cup appearance. Henley will be making his Presidents Cup debut just like Wyndham Clark and Sahith Theegala, who both automatically qualified.

Meanwhile, Bradley will be making his first team appearance since the 2014 Ryder Cup. The 2025 U.S. Ryder Cup captain has been insistent on wanting to make the team at Bethpage Black next fall, and a strong showing in Canada would only further stoke that fire within.

After being a bright spot for the U.S. Ryder Cup team in Rome and contending at the Masters, Homa did not have the season many envisioned for him. He still gets the call and could continue his partnership with Harman which produced some solid results.

"Max plays his best on the biggest stages, and that was on full display at the 2022 Presidents Cup and 2023 Ryder Cup," Furyk said. "He was an emotional leader for both teams and someone who rallied the 11 players around him time and again, and I can't wait to have him represent the U.S. again in Montreal."

International

Weir will trot out a well-versed group that features eight players who were on the team two years ago. Newcomers include Day, An, Lee and Hughes, who may be seen as a controversial pick. Not only did he surpass a Canadian sports legend in Taylor -- as well as Hadwin -- but also Cam Davis.

The smooth-swinging right hander finished eighth in the standings and acquitted himself nicely in his debut appearance in Charlotte where he played every session and collected a pair of points. Davis finished the PGA Tour season ranked 36th in the FedEx Cup standings whereas Hughes failed to qualify for the BMW Championship.

"Canadian golf fans have followed Mackenzie's career for nearly two decades and it's incredible to know he's going to make his Presidents Cup debut in his home country," Weir said. "He is steady and calm under pressure and is without doubt one of the best putters on the PGA Tour, which is a great combination for our team."

It is clear Weir is leaning into the home country advantage with a record three Canadians among his selections. While Hughes will be making his debut, Pendrith and Conners seek redemption as both players compiled 0-4-0 records at Quail Hollow and were the only two members of the team to not secure a point.

The U.S. takes a nine-match winning streak into Montreal having won 17.5 to 12.5 the last time these two sides faced off. While the American's have done plenty of winning in this competition, road affairs have proven to be more difficult in recent iterations. A 15.5 to 14.5 victory in Korea was followed by a 16 to 14 come-from-behind triumph at Royal Melbourne in 2019. The last time the Presidents Cup was held at Royal Montreal, the U.S. secured a 19.5 to 14.5 victory under the direction of Jack Nicklaus in 2007.

On Tuesday, Jim Furyk will reveal his captain’s picks for the 2024 Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal Golf Club. Both PGA Tour pros and average joes await word on the final roster additions, but Billy Horschel, despite some strong play to end the season, is not among them. Why? Because Billy Horschel already knows that Billy Horschel has not been picked for the team.

On Tuesday's edition of Fairways of Life, Horschel let the cat out the bag, revealing that he got the call from Furyk on Monday informing him he wouldn’t be part of the U.S. team in Quebec later this month. For most, a phone call like that might ruin their Labor Day cookout, but Horschel, with his typical candor, seemed to take it in stride.

“Jim’s a great friend, he’s been an unbelievable role model for me,” Horschel told host Matt Adams. “I didn’t expect to make this team. I knew I was way down the list. I know I made a little push at the end. Listen, it hurts because Jim’s a good friend … I wanted to make this Presidents Cup team because he is the captain, but it’s not in the cards for me this year. I’ll play really hard next year and hopefully be part of the Ryder Cup and Keegan’s team next year.”

Furyk will announce his full selection of Presidents Cup captain’s picks live on Golf Channel between 1-3 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 3rd.
