Alaska cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Erica Silverstein

Alaska might be one of the most beautiful places in the world, but it's rugged and can be tricky to get around. Explore the Last Frontier by cruise ship, and you can travel to gold rush towns, glaciers, Alaska Native heritage sites and natural areas brimming with wildlife in comfort, even luxury.

When planning an Alaska cruise, you have many things to consider: when to go for the experience you're anticipating, which cruise line is best suited to your travel style, the best Alaska cruise ports to visit and which shoreside activities you want to prioritize. It's not the kind of trip you want to throw together at the last minute — especially since the best fare deals typically go to organized travelers who book early.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're eager to spot bald eagles in the wild, ride a dog sled atop an ice field or pan for gold after a hearty salmon feast, an Alaska cruise is calling your name. Dive into The Points Guy's Alaska cruise guide for all the planning tips you need for your dream cruise up north.

Why cruise Alaska?

Most people have similar reasons for cruising Alaska. They want to admire its rugged beauty, seek out wildlife (such as eagles, bears and whales) and learn about its Native cultures and gold rush history. It's so far from the rest of the mainland U.S. that it's become a bucket list destination, especially for travelers looking to visit each of the 50 states.

One of the key reasons to cruise Alaska versus taking a land tour is to visit destinations along the Inside Passage that you cannot reach by road. Plus, many of the state's famous glaciers are best viewed from the sea.

If you want to see landlocked areas, such as Denali National Park, you can tack a cruise line-operated tour onto the beginning or end of your sailing for a seamless land and sea vacation. It's easier than fumbling with multiple train, bus, ferry and hotel reservations to cobble together the same trip on your own.

best cruise excursions alaska

A cruise can also make an Alaska trip more affordable. Instead of taking a long and expensive flight to Anchorage or Fairbanks, you can choose a cruise that sails round-trip from Seattle or Vancouver (note, you won't be able to tack on a post-cruise land trip to Denali if you do this). Restaurant prices in Alaska can be high, but a cruise bundles meals, accommodations and transportation into one price that, with sales, can be cheaper than you'd think.

When do cruises go to Alaska?

Nearly every major cruise line has a presence in Alaska from May through mid-September, with some offering sailings as early as April or as late as October. The season is short due to weather. Cold temperatures, icy waters and a long snowy season are not conducive to early spring and late fall cruises.

Alaska cruise weather can be chilly (in the 40s to 50s) first thing in the morning and at night. However, if it's a sunny summer day, temperatures can shoot into the 70s and even low 80s. It also rains a lot in Alaska; it's drier in the spring than in the summer.

When you want to go will depend on which activities you want to do, how you feel about cool weather and rain, and the price. Cruises at the beginning (April and May) and end (September and October) of Alaska's cruise season are generally a bit cheaper than those in June, July and August.

Best Alaska itineraries

Where do Alaska cruises even go? Most sail along the Inside Passage, a maritime route along the state's southern coast (and into British Columbia and Washington state) that weaves around the area's thousand islands. Some venture farther north into the Gulf of Alaska; these are often one-way cruises that begin and end at the ports near Anchorage.

Learn more about the best Alaska cruise itineraries for your next vacation.

Inside Passage

The Inside Passage is the most popular Alaska cruise route. Weeklong itineraries generally embark in either Seattle or Vancouver, British Columbia — though some itineraries originate in Juneau. A few lines, such as Carnival Cruise Line, Norwegian Cruise Line and Cunard Line, offer 10-night Inside Passage cruises from Seattle or Vancouver.

Glacial ice carved this passageway long ago, and today, cruise ships and fishing vessels thread their way through the islets and channels to see some of the most spectacular natural sights in the world.

You'll find magnificent mountains (often snowcapped, even in the summertime), lush forests, waterfalls, fjords and calving glaciers. If it's marine life you've come to see, you'll find it in abundance, from whales and dolphins to sea lions and harbor seals. On land, you'll likely spy bears and Dall sheep while eagles, puffins and a host of seabirds circle above.

best cruise excursions alaska

Many people trek to Alaska to commune with nature, but there's also history here that you shouldn't overlook. Shore excursions and onboard lectures will explain the cultures of the Indigenous peoples of Alaska, as well as more recent inhabitants from the Russian community in Sitka and the fortune-seekers who moved to Skagway during the Klondike gold rush in the late 1890s.

Popular Inside Passage ports of call include Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan, Petersburg, Haines and Skagway. Most cruises will visit three or four ports of call.

Additionally, you'll have one day spent cruising the Inside Passage and one focused on "scenic cruising," where you can enjoy the landscapes but won't go ashore. This is not nearly as boring as you might think since you'll see incredible sights like Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve or Hubbard Glacier .

One nice thing about the Inside Passage is how calm the water is because you're sailing between land masses. If you worry about seasickness, an Inside Passage trip is the best Alaska cruise itinerary versus a sailing where your ship transits rougher, open waters.

Gulf of Alaska

If you book a weeklong Gulf of Alaska voyage, you'll also enjoy exploring parts of the Inside Passage and its ports that could include a mix of Juneau, Skagway, Sitka, Ketchikan, Haines and Icy Strait Point.

You'll have up to two days of scenic cruising, in addition to sailing the Inside Passage. Because Gulf of Alaska cruises sail farther north, scenic destinations might include College Fjord, in addition to Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier.

best cruise excursions alaska

Generally, these one-way sailings travel from Seward or Whittier (the cruise ports closest to Anchorage) to Vancouver (or vice versa). Most itineraries are seven nights, but you'll find a handful that are longer.

For these itineraries, you'll need to fly into or out of Anchorage and take a train or bus to/from the cruise departure ports, which can take an hour or two. You can book the transportation on your own or through your cruise line.

Gulf of Alaska sailings — especially those in late August and September — can encounter rough seas in the gulf portion of the voyage. Be prepared if you're particularly prone to seasickness.

Related: One-way Alaska cruises vs. round-trip: Which is best?

Longer sailings from the West Coast

Finally, you'll find some round-trip San Francisco itineraries — usually 10 or 11 nights long — as well as longer sailings between San Francisco and Vancouver. These cruises are best suited to travelers who love days at sea.

On a 10-night cruise, you'll have four sea days (for example, two days from San Francisco to Juneau) plus a day of scenic cruising at a spot like Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Endicott Arm, Hubbard Glacier or Glacier Bay National Park. The waters before you enter the Inside Passage can be calm, rough or anything in between, depending on when you go.

Ports on these longer sailings might include Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point and Victoria, British Columbia.

You can also find one-way repositioning cruises between Southern California ports (Los Angeles and San Diego) and Vancouver at the beginning or end of a ship's Alaska cruise season.

Cruisetours

Cruise lines understand that not all of Alaska's best sights lie along the coast. Denali National Park and the city of Fairbanks are well inland. And some coastal highlights, like the Kenai Peninsula, aren't typically visited on a seven-night cruise. So the cruise lines created their own "cruisetours": vacations that combine a weeklong cruise with a two- to seven-night bus tour.

best cruise excursions alaska

On a cruisetour, you'll sail on a one-way Gulf of Alaska cruise, so your cruise starts or ends in Alaska. Depending on the tour itinerary you choose, you might visit Seward and the Kenai Peninsula, Alyeska, Talkeetna, Anchorage and Fairbanks — as well as spend one to three nights in Denali National Park.

Some lines also offer Alaska cruisetours that venture into Canada's Yukon, including a few Holland America tours that combine half a cruise with a cruisetour that starts or ends in Skagway.

Your tour might include a ride on the scenic Alaska Railroad . Some activities are included in the cost of the cruisetour; other outings can be booked like shore excursions, depending on your interest and budget. If you're hoping to see the northern lights, booking a cruisetour in September might be your best bet to see the aurora on a cruise vacation.

Best Alaska cruise lines

Most big-ship and luxury cruise lines send at least one cruise ship to Alaska every summer. Some of the best Alaska cruise lines are Holland America and Princess Cruises because they have especially long histories in the region and offer cruises, as well as cruise and land tour combinations, on multiple ships each season.

If you want a more active trip in less touristed areas, a great choice would be a small-ship expedition line, including Alaska specialists such as Alaskan Dream Cruises and UnCruise Adventures.

Ships in all price ranges sail a variety of itineraries, so don't let budget stop you from visiting. If luxury is what you're after, you can find lines that will go overboard pampering you on your journey north.

Best cruise lines for extended trips to Alaska

best cruise excursions alaska

If you want to cruise Alaska but also see some of the interior and enjoy a stay in a lodge or hotel, go for a cruisetour package from either Holland America or Princess Cruises. Both have fantastic itineraries that take passengers not only to the Inside Passage, but also to Anchorage, Denali National Park, the Yukon, Kenai Peninsula, Talkeetna and Fairbanks. Princess even owns a handful of its own lodges.

Best Alaska cruises for families with kids

Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Norwegian, Princess and Royal Caribbean all have extensive kids clubs aboard their ships that cater to all ages, from babies to teens. Little kids will adore meet-and-greets with beloved characters onboard Disney cruises, or hanging with Dr. Seuss characters when sailing with Carnival. Older kids will love the rock climbing walls, video game stations, sports courts, go-karts and laser tag on Royal Caribbean and NCL ships.

Best cruise lines for adventure-seekers

Active travelers might prefer expedition-style voyages on smaller ships that include more time for adventurous activities, such as hiking in the Tongass National Forest, wildlife and glacier viewing from Zodiac rafts or kayaks, or even overnight camping. These ships often feature complimentary shore excursions, kayaks and bikes for guest use and onboard scientists and naturalists.

If you've got active teens who have an interest in nature and the environment, an expedition voyage could be exactly what will keep them engaged and off their devices. Just expect the majority of your shipmates to be older adults.

Look to UnCruise Adventures, Alaskan Dream Cruises, Hurtigruten and Lindblad Expeditions for the best adventure cruises.

Best for multigenerational groups

Sailing with grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles and kids? Try Celebrity Cruises, Holland America and Princess Cruises. These cruise lines, especially on their newer ships, offer something for everyone — as well as a higher caliber of onboard dining than on the cheapest cruises.

Kids can hang out in the youth lounges while parents hit the spa or try a wine-tasting class. Everyone can come back together for dinner and evening entertainment or onboard activities suitable for all ages.

Best for couples and big celebrations

The luxury cruise lines are your best bet if you're a couple and enjoy spacious suites, gourmet food, pampering (many luxe lines hire butlers to cater to every passenger) and the opportunity to meet other like-minded cruisers. The personalized service and all-inclusive nature of luxury voyages might also be attractive to anyone celebrating a milestone, such as an anniversary, big birthday or retirement.

Look at Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Seabourn, Silversea Cruises and Viking.

Things to do in Alaska

Alaska cruises offer a wide range of activities in port, with options for active travelers, wildlife lovers, history buffs and shoppers. Whether you're traveling with young kids or require more sedentary recreation, the Alaska cruise ports won't disappoint.

Related: Best shore excursions on an Alaska cruise

Wildlife tours are available in every port. Hop a bus, kayak, boat or plane to look for bears, eagles, whales, sea otters and other wildlife. Note that moose don't regularly show up in the Inside Passage; you'll need to head farther north to find them.

Book a fishing trip to try your hand at catching salmon or halibut, or go out crab fishing for a glimpse into that type of work.

Active travelers can explore Alaska by sea kayak or canoe, hike on glaciers and through rainforests, zip line, bike, ride an ATV and even snorkel (you'll need a dry suit). You can even opt for a round of golf at the course in Haines.

best cruise excursions alaska

In Alaska, sightseeing doesn't only take place on the ground. Floatplane and helicopter tours take you around scenic areas like Misty Fjords or land you on a glacier, perhaps for a dog-sledding or hiking adventure on the ice. If you prefer to stay grounded, you can find informative trolley tours of ports like Skagway.

Alaska cruises provide plentiful opportunities to learn about Native Alaskan culture. You can get a taste of the gold rush life by trying your hand at panning for gold, attending a salmon bake or visiting a dog-sled camp. A hike on the Chilkoot Trail or ride on the White Pass Railway lets you follow in the footsteps of the miners who came to seek their fortunes. Cap your day by trying out locally brewed craft beers.

Shopping abounds, and you can buy everything from diamond jewelry to T-shirts and other souvenirs. You'll need to look carefully for Alaskan-owned stores selling local handicrafts, but they're worth seeking out.

Best Alaska cruise ports

The best Alaska cruise ports are also the most crowded because no matter which type of itinerary and cruise line you select, you'll likely visit a mix of the same ports. The immediate port area will be filled with tourist shops and eateries. If you want to see nature at its finest, you must book a tour or venture farther afield.

If you want to see some of Alaska's most rustic and charming villages or stick to wild places, book a voyage with a line like Alaskan Dream Cruises or UnCruise to visit destinations like Baranof Island, Chichagof Island, Petersburg and Wrangell.

best cruise excursions alaska

Ketchikan is known for three things: Native Alaskan (Tlingit) totem poles, Misty Fjords National Monument and the city's distinction as the Salmon Capital of the World. The town has more standing totem poles than anywhere else in the state; see them at the Saxman Native Village and the Totem Heritage Center. Access the Misty Fjords by kayak, floatplane or scenic cruise. Fishing excursions are plentiful here, too.

Ketchikan is where folks go to see the Great Alaskan Lumberjack Show, with athletes wielding axes and saws in traditional lumbering activities. It is also the jumping-off point for a Bering Sea crab fishing tour.

Alaska's capital city is interesting because no road leads from here to the rest of the state. It's located at the base of Mount Juneau, and you can only get there via boat or small plane — even residents have to bring their cars to Juneau via ferry. Home to Mendenhall Glacier, this is a popular port for hikes by, kayak tours to and helicopter landings on the glacier.

For a view of the city and cruise port, take a ride in the sky on the Mount Roberts Tramway. Various wildlife-viewing trips (whale, bears and more) and visits to dog-sled camps and salmon bakes leave from Juneau.

best cruise excursions alaska

If you're interested in Alaska's gold rush history, Skagway — 90 miles northwest of Juneau — is a port you shouldn't miss. In fact, it's the gateway to the Klondike and Dawson mining district in Canada's Yukon territory, where prospectors searched for gold in the late 1890s. The historic district still has a Wild West feel, though that's been a bit commercialized for the modern era. This port can get crowded in summer when several ships can call on the same day.

Skagway is an easy port for independent travelers who want to explore the town or go for a hike on their own. It's most famous as the terminus for the White Pass Railway into the Yukon.

Sitka is as much a working fishing town as it is a tourist destination. Sitka's Russian heritage also sets it apart from other Alaskan ports on your cruise itinerary. See St. Michael's Orthodox Cathedral with its onion dome and the Russian Bishop's House.

Before the Russians came, the Tlingit people settled here. You can learn about their history and culture at the Sitka National Historical Park and Sheldon Jackson Museum of Native Alaskan art. Wildlife enthusiasts might want to visit the Alaska Raptor Center, or go bird- and bear-watching.

The population of Haines remains less than 2,000, according to the United States Census Bureau, and it isn't yet as touristy as some of the other Alaskan ports, such as nearby Skagway. It's known for great fishing (salmon, halibut and trout) and an eagle preserve — because eagles know where the best fish can be found.

Animal lovers and kids tend to enjoy a visit to the Kroschel Center for Orphaned Animals here. For a special tour, go bear-watching at twilight.

Icy Strait Point

Icy Strait Point is notable among Alaska cruise ports because the area and its attractions are all Native Alaskan-owned. Most port and tour staff hail from Hoonah, Alaska's largest Tlingit village. The port is set on Chichagof Island, which is known for its large bear population. Wildlife lovers have plenty of opportunities to search for whales and eagles here; adventure-seekers won't want to miss the ZipRider, with its course of six zip lines.

Scenic cruising

Most Alaska itineraries include some "scenic cruising," where your ship sails past incredible natural sights. You'll rarely leave the ship during these sail-bys (unless you happen to be aboard certain expedition, luxury or small ships that offer the chance to get on board a skiff to get closer ... but, even then, you're still viewing these sites from the water).

best cruise excursions alaska

Onboard naturalists generally narrate what you're seeing, so head to the observation lounge (or tune to a broadcast on your in-room television) to learn about some of the top sights featured on scenic cruising days.

Top scenic cruising destinations in Alaska include Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve , Hubbard Glacier, Tracy Arm (Twin Sawyer Glaciers), Dawes Glacier at Endicott Arm and College Fjord.

When to book an Alaska cruise

The best time to book an Alaska cruise is when a cruise line first opens bookings on that sailing, often more than a year in advance. You'll have your pick of itineraries and cabins — balcony cabins are popular in this scenic destination — and often the best fares.

Because Alaska has such a short season with a limited number of ships and is a dream trip for many, cruises are in high demand and people plan early.

best cruise excursions alaska

If you wait to book, you're not entirely out of luck. Cruise lines often run sales in the fall or in the early months of the year (a period known in the cruise industry as " wave season "). You can take advantage of discounted fares, free upgrades or complimentary add-ons, such as Wi-Fi, gratuities, restaurant meals, beverage packages and tours. Some of the most desirable cabins might be sold out; being flexible about your sail date or itinerary can help.

In general, waiting until the last minute is not the best idea, unless you live in Seattle or Vancouver and don't need to book flights. While some less preferred sail dates or cabin categories might be available a few months out, spurring cruise lines to drop rates, you might have trouble finding affordable airfare and pre- or post-cruise hotel accommodations that do not consume your cruise savings.

What to bring on an Alaska cruise

When it comes to packing for an Alaska cruise, your mantra should always be: dress in layers. On the same day, you might be warm in town but chilly on your tour to a glacier. If you plan on hiking, kayaking or riding on a dog sled, you'll need the appropriate activewear.

Definitely pack for rain; consider skipping the umbrella and instead bringing a wide-brimmed waterproof hat, rain jacket, rain pants and waterproof shoes or boots.

This is also the trip for a camera with good telephoto lenses and binoculars. For more on what to bring on an Alaska cruise, check out our Alaska cruise packing list .

A cruise vacation to Alaska is a profound adventure. The spectacular natural beauty, rugged wilderness, massive glaciers and endless opportunities for wildlife viewing make a trip to the 49th state a once-in-a-lifetime experience for many travelers. As an added bonus, cruise ships can reach remote parts of the state, including Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve: one of the most significant (and picturesque) marine and wildlife sanctuaries in the world.

With the ever-growing popularity of the destination and an extended cruising season (some lines now travel to Alaska between April and October), more ships are heading north to the shores of The Great Land. With these expanded itineraries, there's more than ever to think about when booking your Alaska cruise.

To assist in your decision-making process, U.S. News listed the top cruise lines to consider across five categories, including the best options for families , luxury-seekers and adventurers. U.S. News consulted data provided by Cruiseline.com and the results of our 2024 Best Cruise Lines rankings to help develop this list of the top cruise lines sailing to Alaska.

Best Overall: Holland America Line and Princess Cruises

Holland america line.

Alaska cruise ships: Eurodam , Koningsdam , Nieuw Amsterdam , Noordam , Westerdam , Zaandam Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Anchorage , Fairbanks and Whittier, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $379 per person for seven-night Alaska Inside Passage cruise on May 1, 2024, or Sept. 22, 2024. Round-trip from Vancouver.

Holland America Line has been cruising Alaska's pristine glacial waters for more than 75 years – longer than any other cruise line. On top of that, the line features more voyages to Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve than its competitors. Seven-night round-trip sailings depart from either Seattle or Vancouver, while cruisetours – Holland America Line 's sea- and land-based packages – leave from several cities and extend each trip to nine to 18 days.

If this will be your first visit to Alaska, consider booking the comprehensive 14-day Yukon + Denali cruisetour. This Alaska adventure includes a voyage aboard Koningsdam, plus a three-night stay at Holland America's exclusive lodge in Denali National Park, where you'll have the opportunity to see Alaska's big five: moose, caribou, grizzly bears, Dall sheep and wolves – and book bucket list activities like flightseeing over Denali. If it's a picture-perfect day, your pilot might even be able to land on the tallest mountain in North America, also known as "The Great One." Other excursions include meeting dog mushers from the Iditarod, landing on the Yanert Glacier, heli-hiking or embarking on a covered wagon adventure on the Alaska tundra. The Yukon Territory portion of this trip is exclusive to Holland America; while there, visit the mining town of Dawson City and learn about Northern Canada's Klondike Gold Rush of August 1896.

Another highlight of sailing Alaska with Holland America is the Alaska Up Close program, which immerses guests in an array of expert-led lectures and excursions on board and shore. When it comes to dining , Holland America is the only cruise line to achieve the Responsible Fisheries Management (RFM) certification, which means cruisers will enjoy certified sustainable wild Alaska seafood on board (think: Alaskan king crab legs and fresh salmon). You may also have access to culinary excursions in partnership with Food & Wine magazine, as well as special offerings like Alaska salmon bakes.

Cruisers should also consider one of the Holland America's new itineraries for 2024: the 28-night Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice voyage aboard Westerdam, round-trip from Seattle. This sailing, which departs on June 9, 2024, features highlights like crossing the Arctic Circle; celebrating the summer solstice in Nome, Alaska; and watching Kodiak bears – the largest bears in the world – on Kodiak Island.

Insider tip: Sample Holland America Line's famous Dutch pea soup while glacier viewing on the outside decks. The crew passes around mugs of the warm soup in this Holland America tradition that gives a nod to the line's heritage – and keeps guests warm on chilly summer days in Alaska.

Princess Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Grand Princess , Sapphire Princess , Royal Princess , Ruby Princess , Majestic Princess , Discovery Princess , Crown Princess Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle; Anchorage, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; San Francisco ; Fairbanks, Alaska Starting from: $398 per person for seven-night cruise from Anchorage (Whittier, Alaska) to Vancouver on May 18, 2024

Princess Cruises has a long history in Alaska, boasting more than 50 years of sailing to the Great Land. Cruise itineraries last between seven and 14 nights, and many visit the Inside Passage. Princess Cruises also owns and operates five wilderness lodges for guests of its cruisetours, plus exclusive "Direct to the Wilderness" rail service to those properties. The line's wide selection of cruisetours includes independent adventures and off-the-beaten-path destinations, like Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, the largest national park in the U.S. For travelers seeking the highest level of service and the most time on land, the Connoisseur cruisetour is a good option, including up to 10 nights ashore following the seven-day Voyage of the Glaciers cruise. The Connoisseur trip is hosted by a tour director and includes select sightseeing outings and most meals in the fare.

Princess' special programming, North to Alaska, offers guests unique insights into the history and culture of the region with visits from local Alaskans, photography sessions, demonstrations on lumberjacking and excursions like Cook My Catch, where guests will go fishing (with a guide), then bring their fish back for chefs to prepare for dinner at one of the designated Princess lodges.

There are two new Princess cruisetours to consider for 2024. The 15-night National Parks Tour includes a seven-day cruise, visits to five national parks, scenic rail travel and a total of eight evenings across four Princess wilderness lodges. Meanwhile, the Katmai National Park Tour is a nine-day adventure that takes guests to the famed Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park & Preserve to see bears feasting on wild salmon in Alaska's wilderness.

Insider tip: While visiting Denali National Park, be sure to check out the Princess Treehouse at the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. Built by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," the treehouse offers a different perspective of Denali and features "Sappy Hour" and other fun activities.

Best for Families: Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International

Norwegian cruise line.

Alaska cruise ships: Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Jewel , Norwegian Sun , Norwegian Spirit Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seattle ; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seward, Alaska Starting from: $349 per person for seven-night sailing between Seward and Vancouver (itineraries visit Hubbard Glacier and Skagway, or Glacier Bay, Skagway and Juneau). Available on Norwegian Jewel in April, May and June 2024.

Norwegian Cruise Line has one of the longest seasons in Alaska, extending from April through October. The line operates two of its larger ships in Alaska: Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore. These ships feature a plethora of onboard activities to keep kids and adults entertained, like racetracks, laser tag, mini-golf, complimentary kids and teen clubs, video arcades, themed parties, live performances and more. Families will also enjoy entertainment by Nickelodeon, character breakfasts, salmon bakes and sessions with a park ranger who comes on board to narrate the Glacier Bay passage. You'll find many spacious room options on board perfectly suited to larger families – especially in The Haven, the line's exclusive ship-within-a-ship concept. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line offers select cruise deals where third and fourth guests sail free .

There are two new Alaska shore excursions for 2024: the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Trek and the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike and Packraft. The first outing takes place in Juneau , where you'll paddle a 12-person canoe across Mendenhall Lake to reach the towering glacier. Prepare to be surrounded by the spectacular setting of Tongass National Park, a 400-foot waterfall and an Arctic tern nesting ground. The second excursion, also in Juneau, takes participants on a flight into the Alaska wilderness via floatplane; you'll then paddle across a pristine glacial lake and hike the surface of Norris Glacier. Unforgettable sights along the way include densely forested mountains; the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a waterway that offers access to Juneau Icefield; and plenty of wildlife, including sea lions and bald eagles.

Also new for 2024 is the option to take the Denali Talkeetna Explorer tour after your cruise. (This cruisetour previously only took place prior to the voyage.) The 13-day sea and land package, Denali Talkeetna Explorer – Northbound Cruisetour, is available on three dates in 2024 in combination with a Norwegian Jewel sailing. The package includes a seven-night cruise; a total of six nights in Fairbanks, Denali and Talkeetna; a stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline; a riverboat cruise in Fairbanks; a visit to an Iditarod dog musher's kennel; a deluxe glass-domed Alaska Railroad journey between Fairbanks and Denali; and more. You'll also have free time to book optional shore excursions like whitewater rafting, park tours, helicopter flightseeing and other outdoor adventures.

Insider tip: If you're sailing on Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Encore, be sure to grab a front-row seat in the Observation Lounge when sailing in Glacier Bay Park & Preserve. This expansive space on Deck 15 at the bow of the ship offers breathtaking panoramic views from the comfort of inside the ship.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean's Ovation of the Seas at the Hubbard Glacier in Alaska.

Alaska cruise ships: Radiance of the Seas , Quantum of the Seas , Brilliance of the Seas , Ovation of the Seas Departure cities (cruises and cruisetours): Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia; Seattle Starting from: $439 per person for seven-night cruise on Radiance of the Seas, Seward to Vancouver on May 24, 2024

Royal Caribbean International offers seven-night cruise-only Alaska options (some featuring the Inside Passage) and extended cruisetours (lasting nine to 13 days) with land portions before or after the voyage. Cruisetours may visit Denali National Park & Preserve, among other highlights. The line also offers select "kids sail free" itineraries, which will appeal to families.

If you want nonstop entertainment while on board, choose one of Royal Caribbean International 's two larger Quantum Class vessels: Quantum of the Seas or Ovation of the Seas. Both megaships accommodate approximately 4,900 passengers. If you prefer a smaller ship, consider booking one of the Radiance Class vessels, which hold a maximum of around 2,500 guests.

Quantum Class ships have multiple outdoor attractions that provide panoramic views of the scenery. For example, the surf simulator, FlowRider, affords views of magnificent snow-capped mountains and glaciers all around the ship. If you're adept at rock climbing, this is another chance for optimal scenic viewing – at 40 feet above the deck. Additional entertainment includes free-fall skydiving at RipCord by iFly, outdoor movie nights, live performances and musical entertainment, bumper cars, an escape room, a sports court and indoor pools for those cool Alaska summer days.

Insider tip: For more awe-inspiring vistas, take a ride on North Star. Exclusive to Royal Caribbean (on Quantum and Ovation of the Seas), the glass-enclosed capsule rises 300 feet above sea level while suspended over the ocean.

The swanky culinary venue serves dishes curated by renowned French chef Daniel Boulud. In addition, you'll have a team of attendants, butlers and concierges to indulge every whim.

Insider tip: Book your Alaska cruise on Celebrity Edge. The outward-facing design of the ship and expansive outdoor spaces, including the Magic Carpet, offer guests excellent viewing opportunities of Alaska's vast landscapes, calving glaciers and wildlife, including humpback whales in the Inside Passage and around Juneau and Sitka.

Regent's Seven Seas Explorer will spend the 2024 season in Alaska, with the first sailing embarking from Vancouver, British Columbia, on May 1, 2024. The line offers 20 seven-night voyages and two 14-night sailings between May and September. The 746-passenger ship provides an in-depth exploration of Alaska's wilderness, thanks to the vessel's smaller size and all-balcony suites. Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' all-inclusive fares include free unlimited shore excursions (though select tours come with a fee); complimentary fine wines and spirits; dining at specialty restaurants; 24-hour room service; unlimited Wi-Fi access; prepaid gratuities; free valet laundry service; and more. Depending on the suite category, guests may also receive a pre- and post-cruise hotel stay with their voyage.

Complimentary shore excursions are available in a number of Alaska ports. In Ketchikan, sign up for the Tongass Rainforest Expedition, the Great Alaska Lumberjack Show or the Alaskan Lodge Adventure & Seafest. (Note: Some excursions in Ketchikan, such as the Alaska Fishing & Wilderness Dining option, come with an additional fee.) In Juneau, guests can take the complimentary hiking adventure through the Mendenhall Glacier National Recreation Area, home to black bears, mountain goats and other wildlife. Cruisers can also dine on wild Alaska salmon grilled over a fire at the Gold Creek Salmon Bake.

Insider tip: Take advantage of the complimentary shore excursions during your cruise. These are tours you'd normally have to pay for on a ship that's not all-inclusive – and that can add up quickly.

Silversea Cruises

Alaska cruise ships: Silver Nova , Silver Muse , Silver Shadow Departure cities: Seward, Alaska; Vancouver, British Columbia Starting from: $3,450 per person for seven-night cruise, Vancouver to Seward on Silver Muse on Aug. 1, 2024

Debuted in August 2023, Silversea's latest addition, Silver Nova, is the newest luxury vessel sailing Alaska for the 2024 season. Silver Nova features an asymmetrical design and advanced technologies that make it Silversea Cruises ' most environmentally friendly vessel yet. With just 728 guests, spacious suites (some affording 270-degree views) and outdoor spaces showcasing The Great Land's pristine wilderness, Silver Nova is an excellent luxury option for an Alaska adventure. Silversea offers seven-night itineraries on its three Alaska ships, plus longer voyages on Silver Muse and Silver Shadow.

Silversea's all-inclusive fares include pre- and post-cruise hotel stays; complimentary nonalcoholic and alcoholic beverages; in-room minibars; gourmet dining; all gratuities; at least one excursion per port; butler service in every suite; and other upscale amenities. Complimentary Alaska excursions include a scenic railway tour aboard the White Pass and Yukon Railway in Skagway, the Sea Otter & Wildlife Quest in Sitka Sound and more. You can also visit the Iditarod dogs' summer camp in Juneau. For an additional cost, Silversea offers more exclusive experiences, like a helicopter ride to Mendenhall Glacier followed by a dogsledding adventure with a team of Alaskan huskies in Juneau, or a remote fly-fishing trip in Sitka.

Insider tip: Spend some time on Deck 10; you'll enjoy unobstructed views of the spectacular scenery from the comfort of the heated pool, thanks to the asymmetrical design of the pool deck.

UnCruise Adventures

Alaska cruise ships: Wilderness Discoverer, Wilderness Legacy, Safari Endeavor, Safari Explorer, Safari Quest Departure cities: Ketchikan, Juneau, Whittier, Dutch Harbor and Sitka, Alaska; Seattle Starting from: $3,600 per person for seven-night cruise, Juneau to Ketchikan (or reverse itinerary) on Wilderness Discoverer; various dates between April and September 2024

UnCruise's expedition-style small ships call on ports and remote areas in Alaska that larger ships can't access, taking guests to locales that the line coins, "UnAlaska." The five ships operating in The Great Land accommodate between 22 passengers (Safari Quest) and 86 guests (Wilderness Legacy), and there are seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries to choose from. You can also book optional land tours, including a Denali & Talkeetna Wilderness Rail Adventure. Expedition teams take guests on kayaking, skiffing, paddleboarding, bushwhacking, waterfall walks and hiking excursions close to the glaciers and visit secluded areas and waterway passages known for optimal wildlife viewing.

Cruise fares include group transfers to and from the ship; all meals; premium wine, beer and liquor; all nonalcoholic beverages; daily activities; wellness amenities; onboard heritage and expedition guides; and access to guest experts. You'll need to disconnect from your devices in remote areas, as there is no Wi-Fi access on UnCruise vessels.

For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, book the 14-night Alaska's Fjords & Glaciers Bay Adventure Cruise on Wilderness Discoverer, a 76-passenger ship. This voyage includes birding in the South Marble Islands, where you'll see puffins, cormorants, oystercatchers and other bird species. You can also search for brown bears in Corner Bay, bushwhack in old-growth forests, visit the town of Haines to sample local brews and spirits, and more.

UnCruise has introduced a few new cruises for 2024 with a renewed focus on The Great Land. One of these is the Kids in Nature, Wild Woolly & Wow with Glacier Bay cruise. The seven-night, family-focused voyage departs round-trip from Juneau aboard Wilderness Legacy and is available on three dates between June and July. One highlight of the voyage is exploring off-the-grid in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve's "Outback."

A second new option is the seven-night Prince William Sound Explorer with Cordova cruise. This adventure visits dozens of glaciers; the small fishing village of Cordova; the Harriman and College glacial fjords; the islands of Knight and Montague; and multiple places where you can see orcas, humpback whales, sea otters, seals, sea lions, puffins and other wildlife. The itinerary is offered round-trip from Whittier, Alaska, on Safari Explorer throughout the summer.

Insider tip: Depending on your itinerary, you may be able to hop in a skiff directly off the ship to watch bears along the shore hunt for salmon just 100 feet away. This is an Alaska experience you can only have when sailing on a small ship.

7 best Alaska cruise excursions to do in 2024 that are so worth it! Alaska cruise tips

I’ve had repeat visits to Alaska cruise ports, and I’ll let you know below the best (most epic!) excursions that I’ve done during an Alaska cruise! This will include the most common ports of Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway.

I’ve done excursions booked independently, and I’ve also booked through the cruise line.

I’ve mostly been on Princess cruise ships, but for Princess cruise excursions I mention below, you can also look for the same tour if you’re on another cruise line like Holland America, Norwegian (NCL), Royal Caribbean, Carnival, Celebrity, or Disney.

The Princess cruise excursion listings also have reviews, so I recommend you read those even if you are on another cruise line!

If available, I’ve also included where you can go to read Viator reviews. I’m a Viator partner.

1. Mendenhall Glacier canoe tour (Juneau)

The tours you need to consider so you can get closer to the Mendenhall Glacier than most people do! (Most people only see it from across the lake around the visitor center .)

  • Mendenhall Glacier Ice Adventure Tour (with shore landing for a short hike to glacier lookout)
  • Mendenhall Glacier Lake Canoe Tour (no landing)

best juneau alaska excursions: mendenhall glacier canoe tour ice adventure

I did the ice adventure tour through Liquid Alaska .

It was a team effort in a group canoe to paddle across the lake to get closer to the glacier. Once we got to shore, the guide secured the canoe to land, and then off we went to get closer to the glacier! To get back, it was a group effort to push the canoe into the water!

Read the Liquid Alaska reviews on viator.

See more about the Mendenhall Glacier on your own .

2. 5-glacier seaplane tour (Juneau)

The tour you need to consider so you can see a part of the massive Juneau Icefield from above!

  • Five Glacier Seaplane Discovery

I did the 5-glacier seaplane tour as a combo tour (next!) through Wings Airways booked through the cruise line. You can look for the shore excursion called Five Glacier Seaplane Exploration .

This is your chance to see one of the largest icefields in North America!

3. Taku Lodge Feast excursion

The tour you need to consider to do the most epic salmon bake there is to do during an Alaska cruise!

  • Taku Lodge Feast & 5-Glacier Seaplane Discovery

best juneau alaska excursions: taku lodge feast excursion, princess cruise

I did the Taku Lodge excursion through Wings Airways booked through the cruise line. You can look for the shore excursion called Taku Lodge Feast & Five-Glacier Seaplane – Discovery Exclusive .

You can do the 5-glacier seaplane tour as a standalone thing, but flightseeing tours are made even more memorable when you include a landing!

The Taku Lodge is in the remote wilderness of Tongass National Forest, and just flying out to it gives you a feeling that you’re in wild and remote Alaska! (Flying out to it will be the 5-glacier seaplane exploration part!)

And, you’ll get a classic Alaska salmon bake! While you wait for the salmon to be ready, you can go for a short hike in the forest!

I did a small loop hiking through the forest before the meal.

4. Misty Fjords seaplane tour (Ketchikan)

The tour you need to consider to see the largest national forest in America from above, and to land in the remote wilderness of Misty Fjords National Monument!

  • Misty Fjords Seaplane Tour
  • A better way to see the most popular glacier to see during an Alaska cruise: glacier ice adventure (the glacier is getting further and futher back - see it while you still can!)
  • You'll spend most of your time during your cruise in Southeast Alaska, and this is the location of the "largest intact temperate rainforest in the world," according to the US Forest Service. And so... you need to consider a rainforest walk through an old-growth forest of Tongass National Forest!
  • The epic dog sledding is a visit to a sled dog camp on a glacier , and the cheaper version can be a fun remote yukon sled dog camp

best ketchikan alaska excursions: misty fjords seaplane tour, tongass national forest

I did the Misty Fjords seaplane tour through Island Wings .

You’ll be flying across wild and remote Alaska, and it came with a wilderness landing in remote Alaska! The exact location you’ll land will depend on the pilot and conditions. My seaplane tour landed at a tiny island!

Another Tongass National Forest seaplane tour with Island Wings that’s on my bucket list is the Traitor’s Cove Bear Viewing Tour . This is available only when there’s a higher chance of bears at Traitor’s Cove, which is July (very end), August, September, and even the very beginning of October.

Read the Island Wings reviews on viator.

5. Helicopter tour with glacier walk (Skagway)

The tour you need to consider so you can see the mountains of Alaska from above, and to walk across a remote glacier and maybe see blue ice!

  • Glacier Discovery by Helicopter

best skagway alaska excursions: glacier discovery helicopter tour with walk on glacier

📌 Save this post for later! Save on Pinterest! 👈📌

I did my glacier walk helicopter tour in Skagway through Temsco booked through the cruise line. You can look for the shore excursion called Glacier Discovery by Helicopter .

One of the epic things you can do during your Alaska cruise is a walk across a glacier!

You’ll be flying to get to the glacier so it comes with an epic flightseeing tour where you’ll see glaciers too!

The only problem was I wish there was more time on the glacier!

Read the Temsco reviews on google maps .

See my helicopter tour video on youtube .

🤓 Skagway or Juneau for the helicopter tour?

Along with Skagway, Juneau is another one of the best cruise ports for a helicopter tour during your Alaska cruise.

But there is so much more to do in Juneau, and I think you’ll find something else very worthy to spend your time in Juneau (like a whale watching tour !), which makes it better to save the helicopter tour for Skagway!

Not only that, but in terms of the weather risk factor (helicopter tours can get canceled at the last minute due to weather – this is something to be mentally prepared for!), it seems like Skagway can be the better choice.

Last September, I was in Skagway and Juneau 3 times each. It rained every time I went to Juneau (I had some very rainy days), and during those same cruises (so just days apart), I don’t think it rained at all in Skagway!

Of course, weather can vary. But personally, if I was looking at weather risk as a factor, I would choose Skagway!

Well, I chose Skagway anyway because there were other things I wanted to do in Juneau and you can have an epic helicopter flightseeing tour in Skagway!

Although, it was a bit overcast on the day I did the helicopter tour!

Since it was my first time doing a helicopter tour in Alaska, I was still wowed by it since I had nothing to compare it to. But the next time I did a helicopter tour in Skagway (next on the list!), the mountains did look even more amazing because it was sunny out!

If Juneau is where you want to do the helicopter tour, then you will love the Juneau Shore Excursion: Helicopter Tour and Guided Icefield Walk .

6. Glacier dog sledding and helicopter flightseeing tour (Skagway)

The tour you need to consider for dog sledding across a remote glacier in Alaska at a musher’s sled dog camp!

  • Dog Sledding and Glacier Flightseeing

best skagway alaska excursions: glacier dog sledding tour with helicopter flightseeing

I did my glacier dog sledding tour in Skagway through Temsco booked through the cruise line. You can look for the shore excursion called Dog Sledding & Glacier Helicopter Flightseeing .

For the epic dog sledding in Alaska, you need to make sure it’s an excursion on snow!

During a summer Alaska cruise, this means it’s an excursion on a glacier! And that means you need to get to higher elevation… and the way to do that is by helicopter!

So your dog sledding on snow in Alaska will also come with an epic flightseeing tour of the Alaska mountains!

See my dog sledding video on youtube .

There are also cheaper sled dog camps in Skagway.

They are cheaper because you drive to them instead of flying to them, and that means the dogs won’t pulling you across a glacier. Lots of people like the Summer Sled Dog Remote Yukon Camp tour .

🤓 Skagway or Juneau for the dog sledding tour?

Similar to the helicopter tour, you can do dog sledding on a glacier in both Skagway and Juneau.

If Juneau is where you want to do your dog sledding tour, then there is the Juneau Helicopter Tour & Dogsledding Experience .

You can also add on an additional glacier landing to your dog sledding tour with the Helicopter Dogsledding Experience and Additional Glacier Landing .

Glacier dog sledding is generally offered in Alaska cruise ports (Skagway and Juneau) from mid-May to mid-August.

If you’re doing a one-way cruise and will be spending some time in Alaska on land, the glacier dog sledding season lasts a little longer in Anchorage, typically through the beginning of September with Alaska Helicopter Tours .

7. Mountain Point snorkeling tour (Ketchikan)

The tour you need to consider to go snorkeling in Alaska!!! 🤣

  • Mountain Point Snorkeling Adventure

best ketchikan alaska excursions: mountain point snorkeling in ketchikan

I did the snorkeling tour through Snorkel Alaska .

When I first read someone say they went snorkeling in Alaska, I thought it was the craziest thing! Now, it’s not so crazy! 🤣

Where else will you have the chance to go cold water swimming?!?! The water is cold, but you’ll be dressed well for it, so you won’t actually be cold when you’re in the water!

You won’t see colorful tropical fish in Alaska, but you do have a chance to see other marine life like starfish and jellyfish!

As it goes with all marine life and wildlife viewing, there’s no guarantee of what you’ll see, but it’s fun!

Read the Snorkeling Alaska reviews on viator.

See more about the Ketchikan snorkeling tour  that I did.

Can you find an excursion offered through your cruise line cheaper by booking independently?

TIP! What I did to try to find the tour company that the cruise line’s excursion was through was a bit of copy and pasting! Sometimes I could find the tour operator by doing a search for the title of the excursion. Other times I would copy and paste bits of the excursion description to figure out the tour company the cruise line was using.

Then you can see if there’s availability for the tour when you will be in port and how much it costs.

Once I found the tour company, I would also do a search to look for reviews on google maps.

I would say the reviews of ALL of the most expensive excursions were nearly all 5 stars! The most expensive excursions are the most memorable ones, and a lot of times ended up being the highlight of one’s Alaska cruise!

Is it “safe” to book an excursion independently?

Of course it’s up to you to do your due diligence with planning, but generally speaking, tour companies in Alaska cruise ports are very experienced with cruise passengers. They have well-run operations.

If you book independently, many tour companies even ask about what cruise ship you’re on as part of the booking process. That is just how much they work with cruisers!

Personally, I find the risk to be quite low in booking independently in Alaska cruise ports. I’ve booked a number of tours in Alaska not through the cruise line. Because the tour operators deal with cruise ship passengers on a daily basis, the meet-up instructions are simple enough.

Tour companies offer a pick-up from the cruise port.

The exception to this is if your cruise ship is docking at Ward Cove in Ketchikan. Tour companies generally don’t offer pick-up from Ward Cove. This applies to you if you are on an NCL cruise.

All other major cruise lines dock in downtown Ketchikan, where you can meet your tour guide.

You can read the tour description to confirm!

Can you book 2 excursions in one day?

Once again, you’ll need to do your due diligence with planning. But if you have all day in port, then YES, it’s quite reasonable to do 2 excursions in one day! I’ve done an excursion in the morning, went back to the cruise ship for lunch, and then did another excursion in the afternoon!

The quick list of epic Alaska excursions

  • Mendenhall Glacier canoe tour with shore landing (Juneau)
  • 5-glacier seaplane tour (Juneau)
  • Taku Lodge excursion (Juneau)
  • Misty Fjords seaplane tour (Ketchikan)
  • Glacier dog sledding and helicopter flightseeing tour (Skagway)
  • Helicopter tour with glacier walk (Skagway)
  • Mountain Point snorkeling tour (Ketchikan)

Also, if you will be going to Whittier, then I highly recommend doing a boat tour in Whittier !

I have personally experienced all of these tours… and more! These are my top picks!

I haven’t been to Seward, but a Kenai Fjords National boat tour is on my bucket list, and so is a Kenai Fjords National Park glacier ice hiking tour !

Should you do an excursion or make it budget-friendly in any particular port?!

See things to do in each port to help you decide!

7 Alaska Cruise Excursions That Are Worth The Money

best cruise excursions alaska

  • Alaska Cruises
  • Cruises and Sailing
  • Destinations
  • Shore Excursions
  • Types of Travel
  • United States

Excursions come in all shapes and sizes. Some cruise lines include all excursions in the cost of your cruise passage, allowing you to choose the ones that suit your desires. Others include no excursions, which helps keep the initial cost of the cruise low, but you may find your onboard charging slipping higher than you expected. Still other cruise lines offer a hybrid option, where the basic tours are included and there is an upcharge for the higher-priced options.

A whale watch tour near Icy Strait Point, Alaska.

1. Whales, Wildlife, And Brown Bear Search

For a full-day, 5.5-hour wildlife adventure, try the Whales, Wildlife, and Brown Bear Search out of Icy Strait Point. This excursion is offered by Princess cruise lines.

On this guaranteed whale sighting tour, jump on a high-speed catamaran to cruise the very active feeding ground of the humpback whale. Return to shore for an often bumpy ride to the Spasski River for a guided drive in search of brown bear, black-tailed deer, and bald eagles. The walking portion involves covering about a half-mile of gravel and boardwalk pathways, meaning this excursion requires moderate exertion.

Views of the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska.

2. Mendenhall Glacier Exploration

Alaska is all about the ice. Glaciers are ubiquitous and the variety of glacier-centric tour options runs from genial walks to full-on glacial climbs.

Mendenhall Glacier is the top excursion for your Alaska cruise’s Juneau stop. You can choose from a large variety of tours, and many providers have handicap-accessible options. They vary in time and price, meaning there’s a glacier tour option for everyone.

Princess Cruises offers the creme de la creme Mendenhall Helicopter Glacier Trek . If you are searching for the bucket-list Alaska cruise item, this is it. The 4- to 5-hour heli/walking tour starts around $480. You will be fitted for outerwear, hard hats, mountaineering boots, and crampons. Your kit will include a much-needed ice ax. After you touch down on the glacier, your guide will lead you on a 2-hour hike. You do not need experience, but you will be hiking for about two miles on uneven terrain.

Disney offers the 5-Glacier Seaplane Exploration that explores the Juneau icefield and five of its glaciers. Your seaplane journey takes you over the Tongass National Forest before you soar over Norris, Hole-In-The-Wall, Taku, and the East and West Twin glaciers. Wildlife spotting is very likely; keep on the lookout for eagles, bears, and moose. This tour is perfect for adventurers who require or prefer little or no walking. The minimum age is 2 years old, making it accessible for most family members.

The fishing port of Ketchikan in Alaska.

3. Sport Fishing

Salmon is king in Alaska, but there are many types of fishing adventures suitable for everyone from novices to hardened anglers.

Disney cruise line also offers a Ketchikan Alaska Fish Camp and Wilderness Dinner . The 5.5-hour fishing trip is available to family members 5 and up. Once you are outfitted with authentic Alaska fishing gear, you can cast your line in hopes of catching “The Big One.” After several hours of fishing, head to the campsite where chuck-wagon cooks will prep and cook your catch, serving up a wonderful outdoor dinner.

Panning for gold in Alaska.

4. Panning For Gold

If you are traveling with teens or tweens, gold panning in Skagway is a fun, hands-on activity for the entire gang.

Princess offers a 6-hour exclusive Gold Panning, Sled Dog, and Scenic Railway excursion. The tour includes a gold panning lesson during which you can participate in a prospecting session in a controlled pavilion. You will also watch a dog sled demonstration run that includes a meet-and-greet with the sled dogs and musher. The tour concludes with a historic train ride through Bridal Veil Falls, Inspiration Point, and Dead Horse Gulch. This is a great tour for everyone in the family and requires only mild exertion.

5. Bering Sea Crab Fishermen

Hop aboard Holland America Line’s Bering Sea Crab Fishermen excursion and explore the world of Disney’s Deadliest Catch TV Series.

In the port of Ketchikan, travel along the Inside Passage with experienced fisherman hauling up the day’s king crab catch. Guests as young as 5 years old are welcome aboard the ship where stories of Alaska wilderness and maritime adventures will astound wide-eyed guests.

Food from the Silversea Alaska Culinary Experience.

6. Food Tours

There is no shortage of tours for the foodie in your group. Disney’s Woodhouse Wine Estates tasting visit combined with a downtown Seattle tour is a fun date night excursion without the kids. Princess offers a Juneau Foodie Walking Tour in conjunction with Bon Appetit where you can sample some of Alaska’s finest local cuisine.

View of Sitka, Alaska.

7. Scenic Drives In Sitka

Viking Cruises offers a 1.5-hour Scenic Sitka by Motor Coach excursion that is included in the passage price. This tour does include some incline walking when you visit Sitka National Historical Park, where you can view the site’s 18 totem poles. Learn Sitka’s Russian and U.S. history in this Southeast Alaska city.

Pro Tip: Booking Excursions

It is a good idea to choose an excursion that is booked through your cruise line. They will, in good faith, wait for you if there is a delay in your returning to the ship. If the ship cannot wait, they may make accommodations to get you to the next port of call. If you book an excursion with a private tour company, though, you are essentially on your own to get to the ship on time. If you miss the departure because of the tour arriving late, you will be responsible for catching up with the ship at the next port of call. That could be a considerable distance if they are at sea for two days, and some of the Alaska cruises have several consecutive days at sea.

Alaska Cruises are a bucket-list item you will want to explore at any age. You will find the history, natural beauty, and fresh-from-the-earth (or ocean) cuisine bring you closer to nature.

The Best Shore Excursions For Alaska Cruises

Published: february 10, 2020.

Home » Travel Tips » The Best Shore Excursions For Alaska Cruises

As exciting, comfortable and special as it is to be aboard an Alaska cruise traveling along Alaska’s amazing coastlines, a cruise is often just the beginning of an unforgettable Alaska adventure. It’s true, Alaska’s scenery – with its glaciers, mountains and wildlife — will keep you constantly breathless as you gaze shore-side. But every Alaska port town you visit also offers unique experiences for those who wish to step off the ship, whether for a few hours, a full day, multiple days, or for the balance of their Alaska trip. And as more cruise ships visit more Alaska port towns more often each year, these shore excursions keep expanding in scope and variety.

Great day on the water in Prince William Sound.

Here are the best Alaska shore excursions that cruise passengers should consider when planning an Alaska cruise:

Take a Closer Look at Wildlife, Glaciers, Icebergs and Marine Life

Many Alaska port towns are hubs for awesome activities out on the open water. Sport fishing and fly fishing are prime-time attractions, and many tour operators and fishing guides offer full- and half-day fishing trips that chase slamming salmon, hefty halibut and more.

If you didn’t get enough wildlife sightings along your cruise route, or simply can’t get enough of the jaw-dropping excitement of seeing Alaska’s animals “up close and personal”, there are lots of wildlife-viewing tours . Day cruises transport visitors to habitats where otters and whales, orcas and seals live and thrive, as well as migrating and seacoast birds. You might even see bears lumbering along the shoreline in search of a meal or Dall sheep dotting the hillsides.

best cruise excursions alaska

UnCruise whale watching excursion by kayak.

Excellent opportunities for glacier viewing and hiking are also very, very nice near port towns like Whittier , Seward and Valdez , where glaciers carve across the landscape and even shoot up from the shoreline. Experienced operators share history, geology and glacier trivia with travelers, connecting them with massive icy icons in areas like Glacier Bay National Park and glacier-filled Prince William Sound. Some shore excursions will get you close enough to them to even feel a chill or hear the thundering crack of calving glacier ice.

And maybe you want to be the captain of your own ship while still seeing all Alaska has to offer? You can also connect with a kayaking outfit and paddle your way through a day of on-the-water fun that can include wildlife viewing, paddling up to glaciers and exploring quiet coves, as well as pulling your kayak on to sweet beaches where you can have the best lunch views – ever.

All Aboard the Alaska Railroad!

Cruises are great and all, but another great way to see Alaska is by train. You can hop off your cruise ship in Whittier or Seward and climb right into an Alaska Railroad passenger car destined for some of Alaska’s finest locales. One of these one-of-a-kind train experiences begins as far south as Seward, carries passengers to Alaska’s biggest city, Anchorage, and on to Alaska’s biggest natural attraction, Denali National Park and its namesake peak. The Alaska Railroad’s northern terminus is Fairbanks , the Golden Heart City of the Interior. No matter what your selected route, there are countless and breathtaking natural sights all along the way as historic Alaska Railroad speeds along its transcendent tracks.

Alaska History & Sightseeing

Every Alaska port town has its own distinct origin and stories showcasing Alaska’s lore and evolution as America’s 49 th state. Most also have a museum or two, as well as numerous historic landmarks, cultural sites and visitors’ centers, well worth stopping by to get a more in-depth knowledge of each place’s history and unique contributions to the state of Alaska. The world-class Alaska State Museum in the state’s capitol, Juneau , is a captivating display of Alaska’s culture and history and a must-see for any Alaska-curious traveler. Meanwhile, you can also strike it rich educating yourself about Alaska’s most exciting era – the Gold Rush – just about everywhere: in Skagway ’s Gold Rush Museum; in Nome at the Carrie M. McLain Memorial Museum; and at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum. And to learn about Alaska’s marinelife, nothing is more impressive or interactive than a visit to the residents of the Alaska SeaLife Center in Seward. Up-close viewing of beautiful birds, curious seals, diving sea lions, colorful sea stars and dozens of other sea beings will charm all Alaska visitors.

Immerse Yourself in Native Culture

To truly appreciate Alaska’s history, you need to understand the legacy of its indigenous first people. There are numerous and rich opportunities along Alaska cruise routes to meet Alaska Native people and learn about each tribe’s and region’s lifestyles and traditions. Practically every port town and their nearby communities have cultural centers where the past and present of Alaska Native life are on display. Ketchikan is an extra-special stop as the Totem Heritage Center, Saxman Totem Park and Totem Bight Park are home to hundreds of colorful and powerful totem poles. Other impressive cultural stops in Alaska include the Sheldon Jackson Museum in Sitka , and the Inupiat Heritage Center in Utiagvik/Barrow for those lucky or bold enough to cruise along that rare northern route.

Dive into Outdoor Adventure

Beyond sport fishing and kayaking, there are many other ways cruise passengers can experience Alaska-centric outdoor exhilaration ! One fun way is zip-lining through the dense rainforests of Juneau and Ketchikan. For the less adrenalin focused, you can take a peaceful stroll (or a leg-burning hike) on countless hiking trails used by many Alaskans everyday located in every port town. And often, paddle boarding, snorkeling and scuba diving are also on the menu for Alaska shore excursions as recreational options!

Savor Alaska’s Many Flavors

There’s so much to do in Alaska, and an Alaska cruise offers travelers chances to explore many ports, each overflowing with their own personality. But sometimes the best Alaska experiences are found by simply staying in one spot, and enjoying its amenities, local hospitality and delicious flavors. Luxurious lodges , cozy cabins and historic hotels are in or nearby most cruise ports in Alaska, ready to wow their guests with Alaska’s finest accommodations and regional cuisine. Wherever you choose to stay on your Alaska cruise excursion, you can expect authentically Alaska comfort and a tradition of welcoming hospitality from your hosts. That means excellent “must eat” Alaska cuisine crafted by talented chefs; fresh seafood (salmon, crab, halibut, oysters and more), garden vegetables and regional berries; and all of it washed down with glasses of the state’s many craft brews or perhaps a fine wine. Who knows? You might not even want to check back in to your Alaska cruise ship when the date arrives!

Amazing Adventures Await on Alaska Shore Excursions

To fracture a phrase from a popular Dr. Seuss title, “oh, the places you’ll see,” when you schedule Alaska shore excursions on your inside passage cruise to Alaska and its exciting Alaskan ports of call. Alaska is often called America’s last frontier, and considering that it is home to the Tongass National Forest, which covers close to half of the state and includes the largest temperate rainforest in the world, that moniker is surely well deserved.

Alaska cruise excursions offer multiple A-list options for exploring the incredible beauty, be it flora or fauna, of the vast Tongass National Forest on hikes, on zip-lining adventures through the rainforest, on kayaking trips with glacier views, and on bear and wildlife expeditions.

Booking Alaska shore excursions lets you experience the state’s most spectacular highs and lows, literally, as you’re able to helicopter-land atop the magisterial heights of magnificent glaciers or just as easily cast a rod off a fishing boat into watery depths and perhaps snag the trophy catch of a lifetime – salmon, halibut, Arctic Char, and others, depending on season and your location.

Glacier-gazing is a popular pastime when cruising Alaska, but there’s nothing quite as amazing as Alaska shore excursions that give you thrilling up-close views of the icy behemoths – the Mendenhall, the Hubbard , Taku, and others. Hike on top of a glacier following a helicopter flight over the Juneau icefields; bike along paths that follow the contours of glacier walls; enjoy spectacular views from visitors’ centers; see the craggy face of a glacier as you paddle down river and around ice floes, spotting native wildlife including bears, eagles, and harbor seals.

If whale-watching is your sport of choice, choose guided excursions on catamarans, Zodiac inflatables, and special safari vessels that ply calm waters to well-known feeding grounds where whale-spotting is virtually, and in some cases, actually guaranteed, and naturalist guides offer insights into the world of these endlessly fascinating marine creatures. Alaska is known for being one of the best places to see orcas and humpback whales after all.

Tlingit, totems, and tides are on tap when you book shore excursions to get to know Native Alaskan culture. Watch, listen, see, and taste as the story of the ancient Tlingit tribe unfolds in destinations around Southeast Alaska through tours of villages and clan houses, totem carving demos, storytelling, and sampling of native foods.

Food lovers will find much to love in Alaska’s culinary scene , including feasting on the freshest line-caught salmon, grilled to perfection and served in park-like outdoor settings or rustic lodges in view of a massive glacier.

Good Housekeeping Contributing Travel Editor Karen Cicero and her daughter recently sailed on Majestic Princess, a Family Travel Awards Winner , and raved about the ship's amenities, especially the Hollywood Pool Club. She described it as “an indoor space with a heated pool, plush loungers, and cabana-like spots that are free for all guests to use.” Cicero was also impressed with the entertainment and activities suitable for all ages, the excellent dining options and a supervised kids’ club for ages 3 to 12. "We saw grandparents and grandkids on the dance floor, at the shows, on the excursions — bonding moments were everywhere," Cicero said.

In 2024, Majestic Princess and Discovery Princess, the line's newest Alaska ship, will both sail roundtrip from Seattle. "You can't beat Princess if you're looking for an experience that will please all ages," said Cicero.

Departure Cities: Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Crown Princess (2024 only); Grand Princess, Caribbean Princess (2025 only), Royal Princess, Sapphire Princess, Discovery Princess, Majestic Princess (2024 only), Crown Princess, Coral Princess (2025 only)

Norwegian Cruise Line

norwegian cruise line encore in alaska

Passengers are loyal to Norwegian for its beautiful ships, top-notch service and innovative amenities. The cruise line pioneered the concept of “freestyle cruising," which includes a flexible dining time. Flexible cruising continues to be a major selling point , according to our testers who recently sailed roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska on the Norwegian Encore (pictured). "We enjoyed not having to rush back to the ship after an excursion because we had a dinner reservation," said our tester who sailed with her spouse.

They also frequented the Encore’s Observation Lounge, where they were able to cozy up and spend hours searching for marine life from floor-to-ceiling windows. Activities and entertainment, like go-karting, slides and laser tag, are abundant. For a premium experience, consider booking a stateroom in The Haven. The Encore's most luxurious accommodations feature spacious rooms — the bathrooms are nearly double the size of those in standard staterooms — a private sundeck and a concierge.

The variety of sailings to Alaska is also another reason to choose Norwegian. "If Hawaii is also on your bucket list, Norwegian is one of the only cruise lines to offer a 16-day cruise departing from Honolulu that sails through both Hawaii and Alaska so you explore two dreamy destinations on one vacation," said Cicero. She added that Norwegian sails to Alaska until late October — about a month longer than most cruise lines.

Departure Cities: Honolulu; Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska (2025) Cruise Ships: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel (only in 2024), Norwegian Spirit (only in May 2024), Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Jade (only in 2025), Norwegian Joy (only in 2025)

Disney Cruise Line

disney cruise ship docked in ketchikan, alaska

Disney lovers will have the time of their lives sailing roundtrip from Vancouver to Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder. "It was the best experience ever," said a mom of two young adults who sailed on the ship in May 2023. "We felt like it was a great combination of Disney and Alaska."

On-board experiences brilliantly align with the destination. For instance, Disney characters are dressed in special outfits for Alaska and are on deck during the days at sea. "We were able to get incredible photos with the glaciers behind the characters," said the mom, who also noted that you can order Mickey Mouse ice cream bars from room service. Cicero added, "Disney has the best kids' and teen clubs of any cruise line. They're enormous, filled with epic activities like superhero training and are a great place for kids and teens to make friends."

If you want an equal dose of Disney and Alaska, this is the cruise for your crew. Sailings range from five to nine nights. All routes head to Stikine Icecap so guests can observe stunning glaciers, cliffs, waterfalls and wildlife.

Royal Caribbean International

juneau, alaska, usa

Royal Caribbean doesn’t only sail to the Caribbean. This global cruise line whisks passengers to Alaska from popular ports such as Seattle and Vancouver. You can choose a classic seven-night itinerary or a 13-night land-and-sea getaway.

Cruise enthusiasts at the Good Housekeeping Institute are fans of Royal Caribbean for its state-of-the-art ships, exceptional service and high-quality entertainment. "Royal Caribbean had the first rock-climbing wall and ice-skating rink on a cruise ship," said Cicero. "Since then, they've brought so many other epic activities to sea." For instance, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, which includes Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, offers skydiving, a surf simulator and a robot bar. "This line is an especially good fit for families with tweens, teens and young adults ," said Cicero, who sailed on Royal Caribbean with her teen daughter.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (only in 2024), Ovation of the Seas (only in 2024), Serenade of the Seas (only in 2025)

National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions

lindblad expeditions ship national geographic sea lion

For an incredible small-ship experience, look no further than the Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic team-up. The largest of its ships that sail to Alaska can accommodate no more than 138 passengers — just a sliver of the 4,900 or so that Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas can hold. " Being on a smaller vessel means that you’ll be able to sail right up to less frequented glaciers, waterfalls and fjords, " said Cicero.

Of course, an intimate experience comes at a higher price tag — its eight-day Alaskan adventure starts at about $6,200 per person, though you won't need to pay extra for excursions. "Voyages tend to be themed and stress the educational component," said Cicero. For instance, one focuses on coastal wildlife while another explores native cultures. A Good Housekeeping staff member who sailed the line to the Galápagos Islands (a providence of Ecuador) raved, "The ship was beautiful! I was super impressed with the staff and the service felt above and beyond.”

Departure Cities: Juneau, Alaska; Ketchikan, Alaska; Seattle; Sitka, Alaska Cruise Ships: National Geographic Quest, National Geographic Venture, National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion, National Geographic Resolution

Holland America Line

holland america line cruise to alaska

Holland America has a well-earned reputation for bringing guests to new destinations for more than 150 years. Its ships tend to be mid-sized — larger than Lindblad's offerings but smaller than the Quantum ships from Royal Caribbean. While Holland attracts an older demographic, its Alaskan cruises are often filled with multi-generational families.

One of the cruise line’s most popular itineraries is the Seven-Day Inside Passage, which takes you through Glacier Bay National Park, the Inside Passage, Tracy Arm Inlet and several must-visit port towns. But for adventure seekers curious to see as much of Alaska as possible, you’ll find tons of extended itineraries including a robust 28-day voyage that crosses the Arctic Circle.

Holland America is the only cruise line permitted to serve glacier ice, using it for cocktails like the Blue Iceberg and Juneau Gin & Tonic. The line also launched a new Alaskan-themed brunch menu offered once per cruise.

Departure Cities: Anchorage, Alaska (for land-sea tours only); Fairbanks, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam

Celebrity Cruises

topshot france transport sea tourism

Celebrity is popular with adults and couples looking for a premium onboard experience, including delicious cuisine, luxurious staterooms and a high-end spa . We can’t imagine a better way to rest and relax after spending a day exploring the Alaskan wilderness. Our travel experts suggest choosing one of Celebrity's many Alaska itineraries that sail through the Inside Passage and up to Dawes Glacier or Hubbard Glacier, two of the state’s gems.

Of the three Celebrity ships that sail to Alaska, we recommend the Celebrity Edge for those new to cruising or seeking a more contemporary experience. Launched in 2018, the ship features standout innovations like Eden, a multi-level bar with panoramic views, and the Magic Carpet, a multi-purpose floating space suspended directly above the sea.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Edge

Tips for booking your cruise to Alaska

linebreak

✔️ Check your itinerary. The itinerary you choose is key on an Alaskan cruise. If you have your heart set on visiting Glacier Bay National Park, make sure that your cruise line has it listed on the schedule. "Only seven lines were awarded the Glacier Bay contract by the National Park Service ," Cicero said. If you're not sure whether the cruise you have in mind will go through Glacier Bay, double-check with the cruise line or your travel agent.

✔️ Book shore excursions well in advance. Alaskan cruises generally sail from April to October. Because of the shorter season, your ship will likely be close to capacity and several ships may overlap in ports. Excursions will book up quickly. To secure your spot, book excursions well in advance or as soon as they're available.

✔️ Focus on family. Alaskan cruises are best for kids who are at least 5 years old. "Keep in mind that cruise lines don't allow kids who aren't potty-trained to be in pools, even if they're wearing a swim diaper," Cicero said. It's also worth noting that most cruise lines don't permit babies under 6 months or pregnant passengers who are 24 or more weeks along. Cicero advises families with school-age children to look for on-ship amenities, such as an indoor heated pool, a supervised kids' club and a variety of family-friendly nighttime entertainment. "Before you sail, you should also find out which non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary," Cicero said. "Many cruise lines charge extra for soft drinks, but milk and juice are usually included." Free room service is another big perk for families, she notes, so see if that's offered on the line you're considering.

✔️ Check your passport. Even if your cruise starts and stops in a U.S. port like Seattle, there's a high chance your ship will dock in Canada at some point throughout your trip. Also, " some of the excursions in Alaskan ports venture into Canada and will require a passport," explained Cicero. For instance, you may take the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway from Skagway into Yukon, a Canadian territory. Your passport will need to be valid for at least 6 months following the cruise.

✔️ Pack layers. This is especially crucial if you're traveling in Alaska's shoulder season — May and September. While May tends to be drier, temperatures remain relatively chilly. Likewise, September marks the end of the summer season and welcomes cooler temperatures and more rainfall. Because you'll be spending a lot of time outdoors, it's important to prepare for all weather scenarios, including windy conditions common to sailing cruise ships.

✔️ Book next summer's cruise soon. To get the best staterooms and excursions, start looking for a 2025 cruise in 2024, Cicero said, noting that many ships start to fill up at least 6 months in advance. And don't forget about major sale days. "Last year, cruise lines had fantastic Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals," she said.

Best Excursions For Your First Cruise To Alaska

by Prof. Cruise · Published June 30, 2021 · Updated June 30, 2021

Cruise ship docked in Juneau Alaska

Are you a first-time cruiser to Alaska and wondering: What are the can’t miss excursions at each port?  Or do you want to make the most out of a limited budget for excursions?  Or maybe you want to splurge on something, but you’re wondering what?

Well, you’re in the right place!   This guide will help you pick the perfect excursions for your first cruise to Alaska, regardless of your budget.

Booking Excursions For Alaska: An Introduction

My very first Alaska cruise was on my honeymoon ten years ago.  Since then, I moved to downtown Seattle within walking distance of the cruise piers, so I hop on a ship to Alaska multiple times each season.  I’ve sailed to Alaska on nearly every cruise line and have experienced most of the popular excursions at each port. I’ve cruised to Alaska with my family, with my elderly mother, alone with my young son, and solo.  In fact, I’ve started telling people I summer in Alaska because I spend so much time cruising there every year!  And I’ve learned a lot, through both extensive research and personal experience, since my first Alaskan cruise where I lost three fingers to frostbite and wasted a lot of money on expensive excursions booked through our cruise ship that weren’t that great.  Live and learn and prevent your cruise friends from making the same mistakes!

Below you’ll find my favorite three excursions for each Alaska port based on your budget: budget friendly, moderate budget, or big splurge.  Note that I booked all of these through private companies.  I advise against booking cruise ship excursions unless you have onboard credit you need to burn through – they are more expensive and sometimes crowded and rushed.  However, if you’d rather book through your cruise line, you will probably find similar tours available.  As always, do whatever you’re most comfortable with and best suits your individual needs.

The Best Excursions For Icy Strait Point

$ budget friendly icy strait point.

Icy Strait Point, located on Chichagof Island, has a rich and interesting history as a salmon cannery and important fixture of nearby Hoonah, employing and even temporarily housing residents of Hoonah when a fire destroyed the town in 1944. But today, Icy Strait Point serves solely as a cruise ship destination privately owned by Alaskan Natives though the Huna Totem Corporation. It’s a gorgeous spot and easy to do on your own with a small budget. Go here to learn the 10 things I love about Icy Strait Point and about all the free and inexpensive things you can do on your own there including a free museum, a beautiful and easy hike, shopping, and restaurants.

Walk in Icy Strait Point

$$ Icy Strait Point On A Moderate Budget

If you want to see a bear in the wild on your cruise to Alaska, Icy Strait Point is your best bet. Why, you ask? Because the nearby Spasski River valley is known for having one of the highest densities of brown bears anywhere in the world. You won’t see them on your own though, you’ll need a guide experienced in bear tracking. Here’s the tour I’ve taken: We’re Going On A Bear Hunt . You can also read my full review of the tour (and find out if we actually saw any bears) here .

$$$ Splurge On Icy Strait Point

If your ship isn’t calling in Icy Strait Point and you want to see whales, don’t fret, you can also see them in Juneau (more information to come), but if you are lucky enough to be visiting Icy Strait Point, you’re in for a treat. Or I should say the whales are in for a treat and you’re in for a show! Icy Strait Point is an excellent place to see humpback whales bubble feeding (see image below), because they are attracted to the nutrient rich waters of nearby Glacier Bay . Go here for pricing and tour information.

The Best Excursions For Juneau

$ budget friendly juneau.

I have two great options for you if you want to do Juneau on a budget. You can do one or both depending on how much you want to spend and how much time you have in port.

Option 1: Mt. Roberts Tramway (also called the Goldbelt Tram ). This aerial tramway located a short walk from the cruise pier ascends 3,819 feet in just six minutes and offers spectacular views, hiking trails, a nature center, a restaurant, and a gift shop at the top. The cost is $35 for adults, $18 for children 3-12, and free for children under 3.

Mt. Roberts Tramway in Juneau

Option 2: Take a shuttle to the Mendenhall Glacier . Start at the Visitor’s Center where you can learn about the area and grab a map, then take the short, easy hike to Nugget Falls which is incredible in its own right, but also gets you pretty much as close as you can get to the glacier without a boat or helicopter. You can purchase shuttle tickets in advance here or you can purchase them when you get off the boat.

Mendenhall Glacier

$$ Juneau On A Moderate Budget

Juneau is one of the best ports on your Alaska cruise to go whale watching (Icy Strait Point is the other) and there’s a great tour that combines whale watching with the Mendenhall Glacier for those with a moderate budget for Juneau. Go here to check current pricing and availability.

Humpback whale

$$$ Splurge On Juneau

For those with room in the budget to splurge and who want a once-in-a-lifetime experience (not to mention the best photos ever for Instagram!), I recommend a Juneau helicopter tour and guided icefield walk . Your table mates at dinner will be jealous!

Icewalk in Juneau

The Best Excursions For Ketchikan

$ budget friendly ketchikan.

Ketchikan is an easy port to do on your own.  It’s a quaint town full of interesting history and sites within walking distance of your cruise ship.  For those with a limited budget for excursions, I’d strongly suggest doing Ketchikan on your own and saving your money for paid excursions at other ports.  See my Guide For Touring Ketchikan On Your Own , which includes a map with eight highlights identified.

Creek street in Ketchikan

$$ Ketchikan On A Moderate Budget

If you’d like to see a bit more of Ketchikan with a guide or want to limit walking, I’d recommend doing an all-in-one tour which will include a nice overview of the history, culture, and wildlife of the area as you travel to the famous salmon ladder, the Saxman Native Village, Rotary Beach (where you’ll look for whales and other wildlife), and Herring Cove (where you’ll look for bears).  Note that you’ll only get a passing glance of Creek Street on this tour, so you may want to head there on your own either before or after your tour.  You can find my full review of the all-in-one tour here .  And booking and pricing information can be found here .

Totem poll at the Saxman Native Village

$$$ Splurge On Ketchikan

If you want to splurge in Ketchikan I’d strongly recommend a seaplane tour of Misty Fjords National Monument .  This remote wilderness area is only accessible by air or sea, and while some cruise ships travel through it, you’ll see much, much more from the air.  Booking and pricing information can be found here .

Seaplane over Misty Fjords

The Best Excursions For Sitka

$ budget friendly sitka.

There are so many free or inexpensive things to do in Sitka within walking distance of the ship shuttle stop (their is a free shuttle that will transport you from the ship into Sitka) that you’ll have to book another cruise just to see them all (bummer, right?)! See my 9 Free Or Inexpensive Things To Do Near Port In Sitka for details and a map.

best cruise excursions alaska

$$ Sitka On A Moderate Budget

If you want to see some highlights of Sitka that are not within walking distance or have mobility issues, I recommend this moderately priced tour . You’ll visit Fortress of the Bear, the Alaska Raptor Center, the Russian Bishop’s House, St. Michael’s Cathedral, and the Sitka National Historic Park/Totem Park.

Eagle from the Raptor Center in Sitka, Alaska.

$$$ Splurge On Sitka

For a splurge (which isn’t actually much of a splurge priced at around $100), explore the beauty of the Alaskan coastline around Sitka in a kayak. If kayaking in Alaska isn’t on your bucket list, it really should be. Go here for tour details.

Kayak on a tour of the Sitka shoreline in Alaska.

The Best Excursions For Skagway

$ budget friendly skagway.

Skagway is home to just over 1,000 residents, but welcomes over 1 million tourists, mostly arriving via cruise ship, every year. It is best known as a former Gold Rush town, restored to offer a sometimes foggy glimpse back to an earlier time, but with the requisite diamonds, fudge, and novelty t-shirts to make it quickly come into focus as a popular cruise port.

best cruise excursions alaska

It’s a fun little town to just explore around and do a bit of shopping.  You can also hit the Visitor’s Center (on 2 nd and Broadway) or one of the small, free museums representing different parts of life during the Gold Rush.  The museums include the Park Museum (right next to the Visitor Center), the Mascot Saloon Museum (3rd and Broadway), the Chilkoot Trail Center (between 5th and 6th Ave), and the Moore Homestead (400 Spring St).

If you want to work off the three desserts you ordered for dinner the night before (come on, I can’t be the only one), you can hike to Lower Dewey Lake or walk to Reid Falls and the Gold Rush Cemetery .

$$ Skagway On A Moderate Budget

If you have a moderate budget for Skagway and especially if you have kids with you, I’d recommend a sled dog excursion . You’ll see beautiful scenery on your drive up to the musher camp and enjoy a comfortable summer ride on a scenic trail winding through stunning mountain vistas on a UTV partially pulled by a team of eager canine athletes in training. Plus, you’ll get to play with puppies and learn more about the life of a musher! Here’s a review of the tour I did. That exact tour isn’t available anymore, but this one is very similar. There will likely also be one available through your cruise ship if you want to go that route.

Sled dogs during an excursion to a musher camp in Skagway

$$$ Splurge On Skagway

There is one excursion I recommend to all first-time cruisers to Alaska: the White Pass Railroad in Skagway. In fact, I wrote a whole blog post about why. I promise this will be a highlight of your cruise to Alaska if you decide to do it. Just look at this view:

The White Pass Railroad in Skagway.

What About The Up-Close Glacier Excursion On My Scenic Cruising Day? Worth It?

So now that we’ve covered excursions at each of the common ports on cruises to Alaska (I’ve also been to Anchorage , Homer , and Kodiak on cruises to Alaska, but they are less common so I didn’t include them here), I want to mention excursions available through your ship that get you up close to a glacier on your scenic cruising day (depending on your itinerary it will be the Sawyer Glacier, the Hubbard Glacier, or the Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay). These excursions are pricey, but spectacular. They will give you a better sense of how massive the glaciers are and how small you are in comparison (I still think you’re pretty special though). If it’s in your budget, I’d go for it! If it’s not, don’t worry – you’ll get an awesome view of the glacier right from your cruise ship.

The Hubbard Glacier as seen from a small boat.

So with that, feel free to ask questions in the comments or share Alaska excursions you’ve done that you feel should have made the list.

Class Dismissed.

Have you done the helicopter trip to glacier in Juneau that includes dog training camp and sled ride?

' src=

I haven’t, but I’ve talked to others who have and they’ve loved it.

Thanks. I know it is pricey, but this may be the only time (2022) I get to go to Alaska.

best cruise excursions alaska

The first thing that strikes you on a trip to Alaska is how wide open it feels, with plenty of breathtaking natural wonders and incredible wildlife to satisfy even the most discerning traveler. I should know, I’ve sailed there twice. There are also many mistakes you can make on this epic trip. Luckily, travelers can do a few things to ensure their cruise goes off without a hitch.

First, it’s important to note that every part of the 49th state is unique, from its vast interior full of bears, moose, and mountains to the adorable port cities with boutique shopping, whale watching and boating adventures. Some destinations—like the capital of Juneau—are only accessible by ship or air, and others—like Glacier Bay National Park—are great to see from the ship itself. Of course, traveling on a cruise allows you to hop from destination to destination, but it also means planning for changes in weather, various activities and, of course, the unexpected.

When planning a trip to Alaska, choices matter. Several important decisions could make or break a trip, from excursions and deciding if a land tour is the right add-on to ensuring you’re picking the right ship for your group. No Alaska cruise will look exactly the same, but here are 12 important dos and don’ts to take some of the guesswork out of planning the perfect trip to The Last Frontier.

Ice caps in Alaska

Do : Splurge on a window or balcony stateroom

One of the best parts of a cruise to Alaska is the views, and between the nearly 24 hours of daylight and ever-changing scenery, you don’t want to miss them with an inside room. Your best bet is a balcony so you can sit outside and watch the world go by, keeping an eye out for birds, sea life—think playful otters frolicking in the icy waters—and even glaciers passing by. While it’s always possible to head to an upper deck for scenery, it’s more relaxing to watch from your own private deck, enjoying a room service breakfast or an evening Champagne toast (just note: some cruise lines charge a small room service fee).

One of the highlights of my Princess Cruises trip last summer was enjoying a lazy morning on our balcony as we sailed into Glacier Bay National Park, nibbling on croissants and watching the deep blue ice formations come into view as we listened to a park ranger from our stateroom TV.

Don’t : Wait until the last minute to book excursions

Popular excursions can sell out on any cruise, but that’s especially true in Alaska, thanks to the mostly small-group tour options on helicopters and boats. When booking your excursion, always have a plan b (and even plan c) in case your first choice is unavailable.

This has happened to me on more than one occasion, and on my most recent trip, even booking two months in advance wasn’t early enough. If you’re set on a specific excursion with limited space—think a helicopter landing on the Mendenhall Glacier in Juneau or a remote search for bears in Icy Strait Point—then it’s important to book several months in advance.

Do : Try something new

You may not get your first choice of excursions, but that can also be a blessing in disguise: Alaska is full of adventures for travelers who are open to it. From a vertigo-inducing zip line that starts above the clouds in Icy Strait Point to piloting a zodiac boat across rough water in search of seals and bald eagles near Ketchikan, there’s no shortage of available thrills. And while I may have picked the zip line because all my other choices were booked, it became one of the trip's most memorable moments and a great way to face my fear of heights.

Zip line excursion in Alaska

Don’t : Skip the land tour

Alaska is huge—as a whole, it’s two and a half times larger than Texas and boasts more than 6,600 miles of coastline. Each part of the state is different. A cruise is the best way to see certain wildlife, such as whales, and reach cities like Juneau, which is surrounded by water. But if you want to see Alaska’s moose, try to glimpse the elusive Denali (North America's tallest peak), or even appreciate the stunning turquoise water along the Kenai Peninsula, you’re going to need to plan to spend time on a land tour.

On my trip with Princess, I spent a week on land and a week on the cruise, flying into Fairbanks and leaving from Vancouver. It was during that time I suited up for a hair-raising (and muddy) four-wheel adventure, slashing through streams and coming face-to-face with a moose, watched a larger-than-life grizzly bear saunter down a snow-covered road in Denali National Park & Preserve, and watched the world go by from beneath a glass-domed train. Without the land tour, I would have missed all that and my trip would not have felt complete.

ATV excursion in Alaska

Do : Bring a back-up charger

Typically, cruises dock at the port early in the morning and leave in the evening, allowing you to spend what could be eight hours or longer at the destination. Excursions can range from as little as an hour and a half to half a day, with the possibility of exploring the port longer after you get back. All that equates to plenty of time on your phone. And you don’t want it to die while you’re taking photos, using it for tap payments when shopping, or sending videos home to your friends and family. For long days out, it’s always a good idea to bring a portable charger so the only fuel you’re worried about is your next cup of coffee.

Don’t : Underpack

Alaska can be cold, hot, rainy and sunny—all in one day. A trip to Alaska is not the time to try to pack light. It’s important to pack layers, bringing heavier items for early mornings and late evenings and light options for the middle of the day. That’s especially true if you’re on a land and cruise trip since the weather can vary widely from city to city. In Fairbanks, for example, temperatures can vary from lows around 50 or 60 degrees Fahrenheit to highs in the 80s in a single day. And in Juneau, what started out as a chilly day when I was there quickly turned sweltering in the afternoon.

Do : Remember your passport

Alaska is, of course, a U.S. state, and American travelers don’t need a passport to fly there, but most Alaskan cruises start or end in Vancouver or stop in Victoria, British Columbia. That’s because of the Passenger Vessel Services Act , which requires foreign-flagged ships embarking and departing from U.S. ports to also stop in a foreign port. So, while you’re spending most of your time in the U.S., it’s important to remember to bring a passport if you’re headed on an Alaska cruise.

Don’t : Eat every meal on board

One of the benefits of cruising is not having to think about where to eat. However, if you only ever plan to dine on board, you will miss out on some delicious local flavors. Instead, build in some time before or after excursions to walk around and check out some local restaurants. Enjoy an IPA and a bowl of addictively seasoned popcorn at Devil's Club Brewing Company in Juneau, or sit at a picnic table and snack on house-smoked tacos at El Green-Go’s in Anchorage. And in Icy Strait Point, venture into nearby Hoonah to try some salmon tacos or beer-battered halibut perched at a table steps from the harbor at The Fisherman’s Daughter .

Beer and Food in Alaska

Do : Bring an eye mask

One of the benefits—and one of the hardest things—about being in Alaska in the summer is the sun almost never sets (especially the farther north you are). Nearly 24-hour daylight is great for exploring, but it sometimes makes sleeping hard. Since you can’t always control how good the curtains are at blocking out the sun, an eye mask will help ensure you get some shut eye so you’re well-rested for a busy day exploring The Last Frontier.

Don’t : Be afraid to go big—or small

Not every ship is right for every traveler, but there is a cruise for everyone. Larger ships offer wonderful amenities for travelers of all ages, from multiple restaurants (pro tip: specialty restaurants really are worth the splurge) and elaborate after-dinner shows to kids’ clubs, casinos, and special programming like beer tasting with local brews. These big ships, like Princess Cruises or Royal Caribbean, bring travelers to some of the most popular ports in Alaska and offer a wide choice of excursions to fit every taste.

On the other hand, small ships, like UnCruise Adventures (which fits just a few dozen guests on its ships to Alaska), offer a more intimate and immersive experience. This allows travelers to venture into lesser-explored areas the big ships can’t go, like deeper into Glacier Bay National Park. These ships, however, don’t offer the extensive onboard entertainment of the giant cruise ships.

Ultimately, there’s no right or wrong answer, just different styles of travel.

Do : Add an extra day in your departure or arrival city

Most cruises to Alaska start or end in major cities like Seattle or Vancouver. And while the point of going on a cruise to Alaska is to see Alaska, there are plenty of great things to see in those cities, too. It’s well worth adding a day to explore the independent shops and artist studios of Vancouver’s Granville Island or to eat your way through Seattle’s Pike Place Market.

It’s also always a good idea to arrive at the embarkation city a day before the cruise starts just in case there are any flight delays or issues with luggage.

Don’t : Compare your trip to others

In a world dominated by social media, it’s easy to compare everything we do to others. However, Alaska is an ever-changing destination, and every trip there will be different. On my most recent trip, I had the fortune of seeing humpback whales, while others on the cruise got to see orcas. And on my first-ever cruise to Alaska I was lucky enough to experience the thunderous boom of a glacier calving, but had no such luck the second time around. The beauty of Alaska is how wild it is, and a trip there might surprise you.

Mountains and greenery

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

When and How to See the Northern Lights in Alaska

The 49th state is a prime place to experience the aurora borealis.

best cruise excursions alaska

Experiencing the aurora borealis may be easier than you think. While some travelers head to remote areas of Canada or Scandinavia to catch the elusive phenomenon, you can see the northern lights in Alaska without needing a passport. The Far North offers the best opportunities for aurora chasers, but Fairbanks, at a latitude of just under 65° N, also makes a great base. The real trick is finding clear skies.

The best time to see the northern lights in Alaska is in the fall or spring. Auroras occur because of solar activity, so during the early part of the solar cycle, known as solar minimum, there is a smaller chance of experiencing a full-on auroral storm. As we move toward the peak of Solar Cycle 25 , the odds of seeing the northern lights increase.

The Best Time to See the Northern Lights in Alaska

Alaska's northern lights season is between late August and late April, peaking in March. However, the season is defined more by its long, dark nights than by solar activity.

Displays of the northern lights tend to intensify around the equinox months of September and March because Earth's tilt in relation to the sun means that the magnetic field of Earth and the solar wind are in sync. Plus, there's a higher likelihood of clear skies during spring, so March is the best month to maximize your chances of seeing the northern lights in Alaska.

If you can find dark and clear skies, be on alert from dusk onwards and you might get to see an aurora. According to the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the best time to see the aurora is around midnight, give or take an hour. However, they can occur at any time.

Where Is the Best Place to See the Northern Lights in Alaska?

You'll have the best chance of seeing the northern lights in locations between 65° N and 70° N latitude. Fairbanks is about 198 miles south of the Arctic Circle and enjoys sporadic northern lights. It's not worth considering more southern destinations like Anchorage and Juneau, which see dramatically fewer displays.

Travelers wanting to increase their odds should head for the more remote northern villages of Coldfoot in the Yukon Territory or to Prudhoe Bay and Utqiaġvik in the extreme north. Unsurprisingly, Arctic Alaska is cold in winter (temperatures can drop to 30 degrees below zero). Below are some of the best places to spot the northern lights.

The old gold rush boomtown of Fairbanks is the undisputed capital of the northern lights hunt in Alaska. It's not the very best place for aurora viewing — it's just below the Arctic Circle — but auroras frequently occur here.

Its popularity among northern lights seekers has a lot to do with its accessibility. There are frequent flights and plenty of options for accommodations. Good vantage points in the vicinity include Cleary Summit, about 20 miles from Fairbanks, which is easy to get to and offers parking and a solid view of the horizon.

The Geophysical Institute also recommends Haystack Mountain and Ester, Wickersham and Murphy domes on its website. Chena Lake Recreation Area is a popular place to look for reflections in the water (you can park your car near the jetty). At nearby Chena Hot Springs Resort , you can even watch the show from an outdoor hot tub. By day, try your hand at either cross-country skiing or ice fishing through pre-drilled ice holes.

Once a gold mining settlement, this Alaskan Arctic destination is now little more than a truck stop at 67° N latitude on the famed Dalton Highway from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay. It's a prime northern lights observation location, largely because of the rustic Coldfoot Camp in the Brooks Mountain Range on the edge of the Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve , the northernmost national park in the U.S. Many aurora adventure tours take guests here, and to Wiseman about 15 miles north, for the high chances of a northern lights display. Another option nearby is the fly-in luxury Iniakuk Lake Wilderness Lodge . Coldfoot is 250 miles north of Fairbanks and 60 miles above the Arctic Circle.

This small town, formerly called Barrow, is on the extreme northern edge of Alaska at 71° N latitude and is home to the Top of the World Hotel , which organizes tours and outdoor adventures connected to Indigenous Iñupiat culture. You can also visit the Iñupiat Heritage Center to learn about bowhead whale hunting and traditional crafts. Alaska Airlines flies to the town's Wiley Post-Will Rogers Memorial Airport from Anchorage.

Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve

Spanning 13.2 million acres, this national park is the largest protected reserve in the United States. Travelers can bed down at the 14-person Ultima Thule Lodge for a wild adventure facilitated by small aircraft and filled with glacier trekking, rafting, and (of course) waiting for the northern lights to flicker across the sky.

Northern Lights Forecasts

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has a Space Weather Prediction Center , which is a great resource for a short-term forecast of northern lights activity. Fairbanks also happens to be the headquarters of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska, which issues a nightly forecast on Aurora viewing alongside a 27-day forecast.

SolarHam gives a reliable three-day geomagnetic forecast that's often used by aurora hunters, while the Aurora Forecast app shows travelers the position of the auroral oval around the Arctic Circle. It also indicates the probability of seeing the northern lights where you are (green, not so much; red, and they're probably happening right above you).

Northern Lights Tours in Alaska

You'll likely get to Coldfoot on an organized tour, and if you fly to Utqiaġvik, your accommodations will also act as a local tour guide. If you're going to be in Fairbanks, however, you have excursion choices to make. The Northern Alaska Tour Company runs round-trip van tours 60 miles north of Fairbanks to the town of Joy for an increased chance of seeing the northern lights. During the aurora season, 1st Alaska Tours offers evening trips to Chena Hot Springs, about 60 miles north of downtown Fairbanks, and to Murphy Dome, one of the highest peaks in the Fairbanks area, which provides a 360-degree view of the horizon.
