I have a 2013 Journey in Australia. I have the ABS, brake and and traction control lights on whenever the car is ‘on’. Cruise control also does not work. I took it to two shops and they both ran their scanners and said the ABS module need to be replaced. I went to a wrecker and they had four units available but asked for a photograph of the label on my unit. When I gave it to them, they said theirs were not compatible with my car as the unit had to be ‘matched’. I have no idea what that means and buying a replacement here is horrendously expensive. Why Is My ABS And Traction Control Light On At The Same Time?

The ABS and traction control are two systems that work hand-in-hand in your vehicle. These two systems use the same auto parts, so when something fails, it will affect both. In most cases, there’s a defective part that needs to be replaced and the systems will start working again. 

The anti-lock braking system (ABS) is a standard safety feature on all modern vehicles. It ensures that your vehicle’s wheels maintain contact with the road when you step on the brake. It also keeps the brakes from locking up. 

The traction control system is a newer technology. It’s been a mandatory safety feature installed on vehicles since 2012. This intuitive system keeps the wheels from slipping on wet or icy surfaces. When activated, power is reduced to slipping wheels. 

Reasons Why The ABS and Traction Control Light Is On

If both lights are on, the ABS wheel speed sensor might be bad or it could be the ABS reluctor ring. It may also be a bad steering angle sensor, wiring issues, a blown fuse or low brake fluid. The problem may also be a bad ABS control module or low battery voltage.

There should also be a brake light on the dashboard once it reaches a certain level.

The brake fluid shouldn’t ever be low because it operates within a closed system. If it is, there could be a leak that should be dealt with before you refill the system.

If there’s a problem getting power to the systems, the issue could be a blown fuse, but this is a simple check. Pull out the corresponding fuses for these systems and examine the wire inside. If it’s broken, it needs to be replaced.

However, you should only replace a fuse with one that’s the same amperage. Of all the fixes you could be looking at, this might be the cheapest and easiest to do. 

5. Charge The Battery and Reset The Codes

If the battery dies or wasn’t charged enough and it caused your problems, you need to charge it or replace it. Most car batteries only last up to five years , so you’ll want to replace it if it’s going close to that time. 

Once the battery has been replaced, you might need to clear the codes from the system. The lights shouldn’t come back on if the issue has been resolved. 

6. Contact A Professional

Some of these solutions are straightforward, while others require a little more experience. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help if you are struggling to fix the warning lights.

These are sophisticated systems you are working with, so don’t take any chances. Research a qualified mechanic in your area for support. 

How do I reset my ABS and traction control light?

If the lights are on, there’s a problem with the systems that need to be repaired. First, find out what’s causing the fault. After that, you can fix the problem and the lights should reset. If the lights don’t go off on their own, you can reset them with your compatible code scanner. 

How much does it cost to fix the ABS and traction control light?

It depends on what’s wrong. If you need to replace a fuse or put in more brake fluid, you may only spend $10. However, some of the fixes can be on the costly side, such as replacing the ABS control module. On average, you could spend $500 to $1,100 for this repair on parts and labor. 

Can low brake fluid cause the ABS light to come on?

Yes, if the brake fluid is low, the ABS and traction control lights can come on. However, this is a simple fix since you only need to add some brake fluid. The trouble comes in if you find a leak that’s causing the low fluid level. You would want to fix the leak before adding more fluid. 

Can I drive without ABS and traction control?

There are no laws about driving without the ABS or traction control system. Your car will continue to drive normally, the only difference will be that the wheels can lock up and you can fail to get the traction that you need. On slippery road surfaces, this could be detrimental to your safety.

Dodge Journey: ABS Light Meaning, Diagnosis, + How to Fix

Your Dodge Journey’s ABS Light comes on when it fails a self-diagnostic cycle.  When on, it indicates that your vehicle does not have Anti-Lock brakes and the safety they provide.

Your Journey’s ABS system uses a system of sensors to determine wheel speed when braking.  If one of the wheels starts to lock up, it’ll apply the maximum amount of brake to that wheel to keep it from sliding.

Not all scanners pick up ABS codes. A scanner that can read them is vital to diagnosing why your Dodge Journey’s ABS light is on.

Dodge Journey ABS Light On Causes

A good code scanner will often tell you which part of the ABS system failed.  Not every OBDII scanner will give up this information.  A good one will.  Most auto parts stores will have a free scanning service they would gladly let you utilize.

Here are the five most common reasons the ABS Dodge Journey’s ABS light comes on:

1.  Wheel Speed Sensor

A bad wheel speed sensor is the most common reason the ABS light comes on.

There is a wheel speed sensor on each of your Dodge Journey’s hubs. Wheel speed sensors monitor the rotational speed of each wheel and send it back to the ABS module.  

If one of the wheels is moving slower than the others, the ABS module recognizes that it is about to lock up.  It reduces brake pressure on that particular wheel to keep it from doing so.

When the wheel speed sensor no longer sends a signal to your Journey’s ABS system (or the voltage value is out of range), the ABS light will be activated.

Your Journey’s stability assist shouldn’t be working if there’s a wheel speed sensor problem.

2.  ABS Module or Pump

The only sign of an ABS module problem should be a trouble code .

The ABS module controls the antilock brake system. If it becomes damaged and can no longer control all four brakes, the ABS light will activate.

The ABS pump can reduce the brake pressure at each wheel, which keeps them from locking up.

Typically, corrosion is the most common reason why the ABS module fails.

3.  Low Brake Fluid

Diagnosing ABS Light

The brake warning light should also be on.  There may be a squishy pedal.

Start here if your brake warning light is on. It’s not as simple as pouring more fluid in. You’ll need to determine how the fluid got out and repair the leak.

If the fluid reservoir level is too low to keep pressure in the ABS lines, the ABS light will come on.  Without the proper pressure, the ABS system will no longer be able to activate physically. 

4. Low Tire Pressure

Appears with the low tire pressure light.

Extremely low tire pressure can cause your Journey’s ABS light to come on. When the tire pressure gets low, it effectively reduces the diameter of the wheel and tire combination. Inflating the tires can get you back on the road.

5. ABS Fuse

ABS Not Working Fuse Test

If the fuse/relay to the ABS module has blown, the ABS light will activate. To find its location, you’ll need to reference the owner’s manual for your Journey’s model year and engine combination.

ABS Light on Fix

If the ABS light is on, the PCM will have a related code stored in its memory.  That’s the starting point for diagnosing an ABS light in the Dodge Journey.

Scan Your Journey for Brake System Codes

ABS Light Fix

Brake system trouble codes will tell you what part of the brake system needs to be addressed. Here are some of the most common ones.

  • C0128- Low Brake Fluid (Circuit Low)
  • C0035, C0040, C0041, C0045 – Wheel Speed Circuit Malfunction (each code represents a specific wheel).
  • C0290-292 – Communications lost with the PCM or BCM

Here’s a list of every ABS code .

Common Fixes

The most common fix for an ABS light that is on is to repair a wheel speed sensor, followed closely by low brake fluid .

A code scanner can help speed the diagnosis along, but there is some anecdotal evidence you can use:

  • Brake warning light on: The brake fluid reservoir may be low.
  • TPMS (tire pressure) light: A tire is so low that the wheel speed sensor on its hub is reporting it’s turning faster than the other wheels.
  • Traction control light: It’s likely a wheel speed sensor-related issue if you’re getting a traction control warning.

Is it Safe to Drive Your Journey With the ABS Light On?

Your Journey’s anti-lock braking system is a safety feature that prevents the wheels from locking up, which keeps you in control of the direction the vehicle is moving during hard braking.

Assuming the brake system warning light isn’t on with the ABS light, you can still drive your Journey. The ABS light is different than the brake warning light itself.  The brake warning light indicates a problem with the physical braking system and that your Journey is unsafe to drive.

Yes, you can drive your Journey with the ABS light on. But is it safe? Unfortunately, it’s not as safe, especially when it’s raining, snowing, or the road surface is loose/uneven .  That’s why we recommend having the ABS system fixed as soon as possible.

Wheels that are turning will slow your Dodge Journey faster than a wheel that locks up.  Skidding tires will get a flat spot quickly, which can be inconvenient and dangerous.  

ABS also allows you to steer your vehicle while slowing down and has been around for so long that many drivers have never driven a vehicle without it.

Dodge Caravan and Journey ABS and traction control warning lights

Journey and Caravan ABS repair

Constant ABS and traction control light illumination is a common issue that is caused by internal breakdown of the Caravan/Grand Caravan and Dodge Journey ABS module.

Failure of integral components within the ABS pump and module will prevent full operation of the emergency braking system and cause fault codes to be logged for pump motor faults (C2116), which often will not clear.

Yes I have had them changed and cleaned.

the traction control off light came on the same time the ETC did and same time it did it went into limp mode and idols ruff.

I did clear it before just can’t remember the sequence.

I too have just run into this issue. Traction control light on then lightning bolt with limp mode. Can't go above 30ish. No codes being thrown. No abs light so I think that rules out sensors? Starts and shifts perfect (only to second gear then limp). Runs a little rough sitting in reverse. Fuses checked ok. Just bought this 11 months ago for 7500. A bit upset.  Retired and on fixed income living in a car dependant area. Thank God for door dash. Any thoughts on what could be the issue? Throttle body? Throttle sensor?

I have seen the coolant temp sensor cause this problem. Antifreeze will seep thru the sensor and will actually follow the wires and get into the computer.  check for coolant in the coolant temp sensor plug. 

Into the computer meaning the pcm.  But it’s the crazy temp probe sensors causing  limp mode isn’t it ? PCM doesn’t short out, It’s pretty much sealed, main circuit board is encased in clear urethane I believe.  Must create a big mess under hood though.

I had that STRONG suspicion of that when I replied to you earlier. But your post was for a specific request rather than help to diagnose or fix a problem. Glad you did get things "squared away" with your Journey!

Same problem here. 2013 journey 2.4l. Traction control light then limp mode. I replaced wheel sensors, no fix. Shop states etc motor performance and motor current codes. Told me it needed a new throttle body.  Wanted to charge me 600. I pulled it out myself in under 15 mins. Awaiting new one to arrive.  I have a feeling that this is not the problem.  The old throttle body looks fine. Not dirty. Butterfly turning fine. No noise in it to make me believe one of the wheels inside is faulty. Guess we will see.

It’s a servo motor so measurement from meter for resistance etc more important than visual.

Hitachi is the oem manufacturer, new is better than reman parts usually.

Might need quickie calibration after install if it doesn’t work correctly.

Can be done yourself with out any equipment.

It was the throttle body. Dealer wanted 600 bucks. Took me 15 mins and 65 aftermarket part. Running great. No programming required.

I'm going through this currently.  I've changed out the air filter, map sensor, throttle body & gasket, fuel injectors, spark plugs, air flow sensor, pcv valve already.  I did a smoke test but can't find an obvious leak for the p2173 code that shows up.  Smoke only seems to come out of the intake vent. The error seems to do it when I first start up and go to brake.  If I stop and restart the engine it may do this a second time but then is fine from that point on. 

Side note:  The heater hose assembly blew out after the plastic tee failed so that had to be changed, shortly after I had to change the radiator hose because the plastic cracked near the cap.  Maybe the heat has just gotten to these old parts.

Any advice would be appreciated.

How many miles on the vehicle? And I take it a 4 cyl motor? I'd be willing to bet odds that it is a leaking intake manifold gasket to the cylinder head.

Yeah I think same thing.  Don’t think steam heat would distort shape of the plastic intake. Gasket first.

I am having the same issue with both the ETC and DTC (Off) lights coming on. Took to mechanic and they said it was a bad throttle body and replaced it.  Same issue kept happening and they got a new throttle body and replaced once again. Then same issue with lights and going into limp mode happened again this morning while letting my car warm up for my drive to work.

I am really at my wits end with this. The mechanics have performed multiple smoke tests and seen nothing.  Any suggestions what could be causing this?  Could it possibly be bad ignition coils that need replaced causing this issue?

Lots of possibilities. Need to scan for codes as a start, even if mil light is not on. Which engine and how many miles ? If no codes show up; CPS or crank position sensor is the best guess. Not expensive fix, a wear item really.

Hey! My journey is 2.4L with 160,000 miles.  I replaced the Crankshaft Position Sensor about 3 months ago. I did recently (about 2 months ago) have both hoses that run into the thermostat sheer off and shoot coolant everywhere inside. I have had to replace the same ignition coil (#3) 2 times within a 6 month period previously, one other has been replaced and the other 2 are the originals.  The last code I was told about was a vacuum leak notification but I wasn't given the actual number.  I am going to O'Reily on my lunch break and I will see what kind of code it says.

mileage?, eng size?,  miles on the speedo ?was it running okay before you changed the alt  ? did you double check your connections so many questions what is your skill level?

In cold weather, first start of the day, not always immediately, my ETC light starts blinking and runs like crap. I have to disconnect the battery and reconnect, ETC light goes out and runs fine the rest of the day. Does anyone have a clue, I don't. Throttle reset doesn't work.

ETC has little plastic internal gears. They get worn and start to stick eventually. Hitachi makes the oem, RockA sells it, new better than reman stuff, usually.

Cleaning first like OP said, good starting point.  It  is a wear item and some point will need changing.

    Same problem here. 2013 journey 2.4l. Traction control light then limp mode. I replaced wheel sensors, no fix. Shop states etc motor performance and motor current codes. Told me it needed a new throttle body. Wanted to charge me 600. I pulled it out myself in under 15 mins. Awaiting new one to arrive. I have a feeling that this is not the problem.
