The Princess of Wales Memorial plaque

The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk

The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk is a seven-mile-long walk, charted by 90 plaques set in the ground, that takes you within sight of famous buildings and locations associated with the Princess during her life.

You will pass through four of the eight Royal Parks on this walk: St. James's Park, The Green Park, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens.

During the walk, you will see three palaces and two mansions which played a role in the life of the Princess:

  • Kensington Palace
  • Buckingham Palace
  • Clarence House
  • St James's Palace
  • Spencer House, the one-time London house of the Spencer family

The plaques are the work of sculptor Alec Peever. They have a rose emblem at the centre and are etched in aluminium, which appears like a precious metal. The rose is heraldic in design, and while symbolising the Princess's enduring image, also symbolises Britain's traditions and heritage. The plaques are immediately recognisable at any point, and clearly direct walkers along the route.

The walk is one of two memorial projects officially opened on 30 June 2000, the day before the Princess's 39th birthday; the other is the Diana Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens. Together they celebrate the Princess's affection for the open spaces around her home in Kensington Palace, and her love of children.

Testimonials

Such a lovely day seeing some truly remarkable photos of Princess Diana and learning a few new things from the audio narration. Her legacy sure does live on.

It was fabulous!!! I loved hearing the perspective from the Hussein family. Father and sons gave very interesting perspectives on the photos they took and the Royals they have come to know, especially the beautiful Diana.

Well curated, the audio flowed well and helped explain the stories behind the iconic photos and foster the emotion of the time. I felt it was a very generous and fitting tribute to Diana.

Self-Guided * 7 Miles * Outdoors

This self-guided tour is a 7-mile circular walking trail in the heart of London featuring places associated with Diana, Princess of Wales . It includes stops at palaces, mansions, parks, memorials, and other landmarks related to the Princess, the royal family, and other must-see sites in London.

Ninety plaques mark the stops on the trail, created by artist Alec Peever. Each plaque contains an aluminum rose emblem, symbolizing Diana’s image and British traditions. The route was dedicated as a memorial to Princess Diana on June 30th, 2000, a day before her 39th birthday.

Diana Frances Spencer (1961-1997) was born in Norfolk, England, to an aristocratic family. At 16, after graduating from school, she met her future husband, the 29 years old Charles, Prince of Wales. Till 1981, she lived in London and worked in several low-income jobs. Then they married, and Diana entered the British Royal Family, receiving the title of the Princess of Wales. She took on many royal duties, became a patron of over 100 charities, and used her fame and love from the public to shed light on issues close to her heart, including cancer, AIDS, and homelessness.

In 1992, after 11 years of marriage and having two children, the princess and her husband divorced. That has not reduced the love she received from the public or the attention from the press, which she harnessed to raise awareness of social causes, such as the dangers of leftover landmines in Angola. Diana died in a car accident on August 31st, 1997, attempting to escape the paparazzi who followed her in the streets of Paris. She was 36 years old.

Walking The Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk can be started from any stop. It passes through four out of eight of London’s Royal Parks – St. James’s Park, Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens, and three palaces – St. James’s, Buckingham, where the princess lived before her marriage, and Kensington, where she raised her family. The walk also includes three grand houses – Apsley, Clarence, and Spencer’s family hereditary house.

Among the must-see sites on the walk is the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain and the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Playground in Kensington Gardens.

Other sites on the walk include Westminster Abbey, one of the world’s most famous churches and where Diana married Prince Charles, The Magazine at the Serpentine Sackler Gallery, designed by Zaha Hadid , and the Queen Victoria Memorial at the end of The Mall.

Princess Diana Tour

This private Princess Diana tour is a walking tour that takes us to locations that played important roles in the life of Princess Diana.  This isn’t a walk for all the big tourist sights (though we see a few of them) but rather to see the parts of real London that Diana knew so well.

We will explore the expensive shopping streets of Mayfair where the beautiful engagement ring for Diana was purchased and visit 3 royal palaces (Buckingham, St James and Kensington) that played such an important part in her life.

Spencer House as seen on our Princess Diana Tour

Of course before Diana was a royal, she war born into the aristocratic Spencer family and we will visit their London family home too.

Important places in our Princess Diana Tour

We will also visit some of her favourite shops and restaurants. See the Princess Diana memorial fountain in Hyde Park. Visit places where she sought solace during the toughest times in her life. Walk down one of the most spectacularly expensive residential streets in the world before finishing at Cafe Diana. Perhaps you’d like to visit the recently unveiled statue of Diana in the gardens of Kensington Palace. If you like this tour you may also enjoy our Royal London Tour or the Queen Elizabeth II Tour .

No mention of that when I bought two tickets 'for all attractions' Not impressed. We had pre booked a hotel an hour and a half further west, so either I waste good chunk of my ticket price, or make a three hour round trip to see the closed attractions. I should bill them for my time, petrol and parking. A disgrace. Never again. Read more Written April 16, 2024

  • Chris F 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Needs to be respected as a museum. Took my grandson to see this iconic museum. The display of aircraft is amazing, you get a real feeling for how small and flimsy the early craft were. The only disappointment was the behaviour of some very young children running riot ( literally ). They had no interest in the displays only in the play area and running around unsupervised by parents. Making an entry fee would surely stop this? Still a great day out. No complaints about the parking, food and the gift shop. Read more Written February 24, 2024

The welcome is warm and the stewards informative and chatty. There is so much to see and process. Memorials, tombs and the huge architecture. Do spend some time at the shrines of Beds and St Cuthbert, as well as appreciating the stained glass. To complement our visit we called into the cafe where we were served a lovely latte and a huge jam and cream scone, delicious and every bit homemade. Princess Diana Sights in London

princess diana walking tour london

Diana, Princess of Wales was recognised and loved throughout the world. Her death in 1997 sent millions of people into mourning and her legacy lives on to this very day, with many London visitors hoping to walk in the footsteps of the People’s Princess.

What follows is our guide to the places Princess Diana lived and visited, as well as the statues and monuments that have been built to commemorate her throughout the city.

  • Places Where Princess Diana Lived
  • Princess Diana Memorials and Statues
  • Where Princess Diana Shopped and Ate

Places Associated with Princess Diana

Princess diana tours,   places where princess diana lived.

Flat 60, Colherne Court, SW5 0EF

princess diana walking tour london

As an 18th birthday gift, Diana’s mother bought her a flat here at Coleherne Court in Earl’s Court. She lived here, along with three flatmates, for just under two years, moving out in February of 1981. Today there is a blue plaque that commemorates the building’s most famous resident.

Kensington Palace

After Diana’s marriage to the then Prince of Wales, King Charles III, in July of 1981, the couple moved into apartments at Kensington Palace. The double apartment on the north side of the palace would remain her home for the rest of her life. After the couple’s divorce, her private offices were moved to the Palace.

Kensington Palace became the focal point for public morning after her tragic death when millions of flowers and tributes were left outside the building’s gates by visitors from all across the world.

St. James's Palace

princess diana walking tour london

After Diana’s divorce from the then Prince of Wales, she was allowed not only to retain her apartment at Kensington Palace but she was also given permission to use the state apartments at St. James’s Palace. On a much more sombre occasion, the late Princess lay in state here for 5 days after her death, before it was taken to Kensington Palace to begin her state funeral.

The chapel at St. James’s Palace would later be the location of the baptism of two of Diana’s grandchildren: Prince George of Wales and Prince Louis of Wales.

  Princess Diana Memorials and Statues

Princess Diana Memorial Fountain

In 2004 a memorial fountain, honouring the life of Diana, was unveiled in Hyde Park in London.

The memorial fountain was designed by an American landscape artist, Kathryn Gustafson.

The artist wanted the fountain to be easily accessible to the public to reflect Diana’s “inclusive” personality and to reflect the fact that she was seen as an ‘accessible’ figure to the public.

The fountain cost £3.6million to construct and was pieced together using 545 separate pieces of granite from Cornwall. Although it is referred to as a fountain, it is actually more of an oval-shaped stream. The fountain is circular and runs around a patch of grass around 50m by 80m (165ft by 260ft).

The fountain is not smooth and consists of numerous cuts, elevated steps of different sizes, false ‘rocks’ and smooth pieces, but the bottom part of the fountain is a tranquil pool. All of the different effects and textures built into the stream are said to represent the parts of Diana’s life: the turmoil, and the happy times.

In addition to the above, many believe the circular formation represents the circle of life, a Mobius strip, life vs. death, or even a meaningless endeavour. The circular formation was also intended to be a path for the public to walk through to aid in contemplation and relaxation.

Kensington Palace Sunken Gardens

London’s official tribute statue to the late Princess of Wales can be found in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace, which was unveiled by her sons on what would have been her 60th birthday in 2021.

Commissioned by Princes Willian and Harry, the statue was designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley and depicts the Princess among children, highlighting her special bond with the young people she worked with throughout her charity endeavours. The gardens surrounding the statue were completely replanted in 2019 with over 4,000 new flowers introduced including forget-me-nots (Diana’s favourite flower) and white tulips, lavender, dahlias and sweepeas.

The statue received mixed reviews from critics but has been a popular visitor attraction with the general public.

Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk

princess diana walking tour london

Those wanting to walk in the footsteps of Princess Diana should consider following along on the Diana Princess of Wales Memorial Walk, which was opened on the 30th of June 2000, the day before what would have been Diana’s 39th birthday. This seven-mile-long walk takes you through the city and past “famous buildings and locations associated with the Princess during her life.” The walk is marked by 90 plaques set into the ground which were designed by sculptor Alec Peever.

Cafe' Diana - 5 Wellington Terrace, W2 4LW

Cafe’ Diana, located in Notting Hill, “pays homage to a life in the public eye that ended far too soon.” Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, the cafe is decorated with photographs of the late Princess. There is even a photograph of the Princess visiting the cafe, from 1989. She was also a repeat customer, said to enjoy their fry ups, and brought her sons for breakfast as the cafe is in walking distance from Kensington Palace.

Places Where Diana Shopped and Dined

Lock & Co. - 6 St. James's Street, SW1A 1EF

A favourite with almost all member of the Royal Family, Lock & Co has been providing headwear for London’s rich and famous since the 17th century! Lord Nelson, Winston Churchill, Charlie Chaplin, and Oscar Wilde were all customers here - as was Princess Diana. Many of Diana’s hats were custom designed for her here at this shop, and today the company holds a royal warrant as they still create hats for the royal family’s favourites engagements throughout the year.

Launceston Place - 1A Launceston Place, W8 5RL

princess diana walking tour london

Said to be Princess Diana’s favourite restaurant, Launceston Place has been a local favourite for years. Known for classic British cooking, the restaurant hosted the Princess countless times throughout the years, even going so far as naming a dish after her: the Souffle’ Diana (which is sadly no longer on the menu!).

Bombay Brasserie - Courtfield Road, SW7 4QH

princess diana walking tour london

Another locale within walking distance of Kensington Palace is Bombay Brasserie, a fine dining Indian restaurant that has been dishing up delicious cuisine for almost 40 years. Not only did Princess Diana enjoy dining here, she would routinely visit with her friends Cleo Rocos, Kenny Everett and Freddie Mercury. The group of four would reportedly often come specifically to drink peach Bellinis.

St. Paul's Cathedral

princess diana walking tour london

It was at St. Paul’s Cathedral, on Wednesday 29th July 1981 that Princess Diana and the now King, Charles III, were wed, in a ceremony that was broadcast to  an estimate 750million people throughout the world. A traditional Church of England wedding, it was led by the Dean of St. Paul’s and the archbishop of Canterbury in front of numerous heads of state, members of other royal families, and governmental ministers.

The couple chose St. Paul’s Cathedral over Westminster Abbey as it was larger, and also allowed a longer procession through London.

Diana’s wedding dress became an immediate trend setter and the image of her walking down the aisle, followed by the 25 foot (7.6m) train on her wedding dress became an instantly iconic image.

Buckingham Palace

princess diana walking tour london

After the “wedding of the century,” as it was billed, the newly married Charles and Diana rode in an open landau (bearing a “just married” sign that had been affixed to the back by Princes Andrew and Edward) to Buckingham Palace for their wedding reception. At 13:10BST the couple stepped out onto the balcony to wave to the thousands of fans that had crowded the streets around the Palace, hoping to glimpse the Prince and Princess. The couple kissed, to the delight of the crowds, starting a tradition that has carried through to other Royal weddings.

Westminster Abbey

princess diana walking tour london

Diana attended numerous services at Westminster Abbey throughout her time as the Princess of Wales, but it was perhaps her final association with the church that became her most enduring as the Abbey was the location of the funeral of Princess Diana. On the 6th of September 1997, Diana’s coffin was transported on an escorted gun carriage from Kensington Palace to Westminster Abbey. 2,000 people attended the ceremony and it is estimated that over 2 billion people watched the service on TV, marking one of the biggest televised events in history.

The princess was buried at Althorp, the Spencer estate where the princess grew up, on a private island in the middle of an ornamental lake, kept away from the public.

7 London landmarks where you can walk in the footsteps of Princess Diana

Princess Diana

Known as the People’s Princess, the tragic passing of the beloved Princess Diana rocked the entire world.

To this day, visitors from all over the globe flock to London to see some of the landmarks most closely associated with the late Princess of Wales, and with our guide, you too can walk in her footsteps and visit some of her previous royal residences and favourite places when staying at the Grand Royal hotel London .

Here are seven London landmarks associated with Princess Diana well worth visiting during your next stay with us in the capital.

Buckingham Palace

Home to Princess Dianna briefly during her engagement to Prince Charles, Buckingham Palace is one of the most photographed royal palaces in all of London.

Buckingham Palace In London

Visitors wishing to get a glimpse inside the royal residence while staying at the Grand Royal hotel London during August and September will be able to take a guided tour. The palace opens its doors to visitors for eight weeks during the late summer months making a trip this time of year perfect.

A tribute to the Princess can be found in the music room of Buckingham Palace and was carefully selected by Princes William and Harry as a reminder of their mother’s time in residence there and her love of all things musical. Why not book one of our 4 star hotels London during August or September to see it for yourself?

Kensington Palace

Kensington Palace is a current royal residence, so, unfortunately, you won’t be able to take a guided tour of the royal apartments – they are currently called home by none other than the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Kensington Palace Londn

However, it’s still entirely possible to get up close to the palace during your stay at the Grand Royale London Hyde Park   as there are parts of the building uninhabited with royals that you can visit.

You can take a tour of the King’s State Apartments for example or explore the famous sunken gardens seven days a week.

St. George’s Square, Pimlico

For those of us old enough to remember Diana before she joined the royal family, you might recall a few iconic photos of her as a young nursery school assistant posing for photographs by a small fountain.

This fountain still stands in St. George’s Square and can be visited at any time of the day. For those staying in our 4-star hotels London, you can reach the area of Pimlico via Tube quite easily to track down this famous fountain and take a few photos of your own.

St. Paul’s Cathedral

One of the most famous royal weddings of all time, St. Paul’s Cathedral was chosen as the venue for the marriage of Diana and the Prince of Wales in 1981 in order to accommodate their vast guest list of 3,500 people.

St Paul’s Cathedral

Televised all over the globe, we saw Diana enter the famous cathedral with her supersized train ready to be wed to Prince Charles. Today, if you who wish to visit the wedding venue during your time in London, you can do so at your leisure.

To get to St. Paul’s Cathedral from the Grand Royal hotel London , take the Central line from Queensway station. It will get you to your destination in just under 25-minutes.

Westminster Abbey

Princess Diana didn’t receive a state funeral, but a service was held at Westminster Abbey before her coffin was transported through the streets of Kensington. It was met by crowds of mourners that had travelled from all over the world to pay their final respects to the late Princess.  Following a genuinely moving service, Diana’s coffin was then taken to her final resting place.

Westminster Abbey

Visitors staying at our 4-star hotels in London are welcome to visit Westminster Abbey during their stay in the city, but one of the most well attended visiting periods is Evensong, a beautiful choral service that takes place on most days of the week at 5pm.

To reach Westminster Abbey from the Grand Royal hotel London , take the Circle tube line from nearby Bayswater station to Westminster. Expect your journey to take just over 20-minutes.

When you arrive at the station, Westminster Abbey is just a nine-minute walk away, so you won’t need to leave too early to attend the 5pm evensong service.

Althorp Estate

Althorp Estate is the ancestral family home of the Spencers and Diana’s childhood home. The body of the Princess was interred here on a small island surrounded by a picturesque lake following the service at Westminster Abbey.

Although visitors will not be granted access to the island, those staying at our 4-star hotels London and willing to make the two-hour journey north of London to visit the residence can take a tour of Diana’s childhood home on selected dates.

Visitors staying at the Grand Royale London Hyde Park  between May and September can tour of the property from 12 noon until 5pm daily. Here you’ll find a small exhibition of photographs of the Princess and be free to explore the wonderful art collection and gardens.

For those wishing to leave a floral tribute at the grounds, visitors are encouraged to lay their flowers at the Grecian-inspired temple situated across from Round Oval Lake (the home of Diana’s island).

The Princess Diana Memorial Garden

Although not a place often frequented by the Princess, no tour of Diana’s London would be complete without a short visit to the Princess Diana Memorial Garden located in Hyde Park.

Diana Memorial Fountain

Featuring beautifully maintained plants and shrubs, a sweeping stream-like water feature and a children’s play area complete with a pirate ship, this tranquil space is filled with serenity and the occasional peel of children’s laughter. It is a fitting memorial for a much-loved member of the royal family.

You’ll often find small floral tributes and candles lit around the time of the anniversary of Diana’s death.

The presentation includes images and a first-person audio guide from the longest-standing official royal photography family, the husseins.

Princess Diana in a halterneck top

An exhibition in honour of the late Diana, Princess of Wales , is coming to London later this year.

World-famous photographers Anwar Hussein and his two sons Samir and Zak - the longest-standing family of official royal photographers - have spent over 40 years capturing Diana and her family's greatest moments. In 2024, they're bringing their images and a first-person account of the stories behind them to the UK for Princess Diana: Accredited Access Exhibition  for the first time.

"They received special access to document the lives of the Royals in public, as well as capturing more intimate, private moments," a press release about the exhibition explained.

"Some of these iconic photos include Diana sitting alone outside the Taj Mahal, walking through a landmine field as part of her trip to Angola in 1997, the unforgettable revenge dress  which dared to break Royal protocol and the Princess’ simple handshake with an AIDS patient that showed the world how to be human."

"Every photo has a story behind it that hasn’t been heard before and is shared in the exhibition’s in-depth audio guide."

A sneak peek inside the exhibition coming in May 2024

The 60-minute experience will be an hour of sartorial heaven for fashion fans, who'll have the chance to witness some of Diana's most iconic looks and a first-hand account of the moments she wore them as told by Anwar, Samir and Zak.

Anwar said on the exhibition: “I am honoured and humbled to have been given the opportunity to photograph Princess Diana so extensively and to have had the pleasure of having many friendly and insightful conversations with her."

"I am delighted that the images captured, as well as those of my sons, are coming home to London to recognise and memorialise such a remarkable woman and her sons. There are so many memories of our two families connecting and creating a special relationship, which I am pleased to be able to display in such a unique way through the exhibition.”

Hello TA Community!

Sun 10/13: Arrive from US at 7am on direct overnight flight & leave day flexible

Walk from hotel to see Palace of Westminster /" Big Ben ", Westminster Abby (outside), Buckingham Palace (outside). Royal Mews (tentative), St James Park .

If still energy, spend some time in Southbank/Jubilee Gardens and do London Eye (weather dependent).

Question: Is Princess Diana Memorial Playground worth the extra walking mileage to visit?

Mon 10/14: Day trip to Greenwich

Plan to pre-buy Royal Museums Greenwich Day Pass and do as many of the Greenwich sights we can manage! (Cutty Sark, Royal Observatory, Prime Meridian, National Maritime Museum, Old Naval College).

Leave evening open (Southbank/Jubilee Gardens/London Eye if didn't do day before).

Questions: It seems that a 24-hour Family Pass on City Cruises is a better option than using Thames Clippers as more outdoor seating and less stops. Any opinions/insights?

Would a mid-day stop at Greenwich market be a nice lunch break?

Is Meantime Brewing worth a stop/meal? My husband is a craft beer fanatic.

Tues 10/15: TOL/ Tower Bridge

Thames Clipper Waterloo Pier to Tower Pier, Tower of London (plan for this to be all AM plus lunch onsite), Tower Bridge (inside).

If time allows walk along Thames checking out Golden Hinde, Globe Theatre, & Millennium Bridge then take Thames Clipper from Bankside to London Eye stop

Dinner at Dishoom Covent Garden , Matilda Musical in West End

Questions: Is TOL ok to not pre-book in October? I'd like to leave the option to flop Mon/Tue daytime activities in case of bad weather.

How far in advance is it advisor to purchase theatre tickets?

How long should we allow for dinner at Dishoom? I plan to make reservations (allowed up to 545pm)

Matilda would be a splurge for us - anyone gone? Was it worth it? My kids LOVE the movie of the musical and I think they'd do fine in the theatre/sitting for the performance. If we did Greenwich this day instead due to weather, is making a theatre performance that evening realistic time-wise?

Wed 10/16: splitting up

Husband: Visit Stonehenge (likely via train to Salisbury then the Stonehenge Tour buses from Salisbury).

Mom/kids: Bus from hotel to Trafalgar Square , National Gallery (DIY art scavenger hunt for kids), Brigit's Bakery Paddington Afternoon Tea Bus Tour (1345 time), Leicester Square , Lego Store.

Evening open.

Questions: How far in advance is it advisable to pre-book the Brigit's Bus Tour?

Any advise for a self-day tour of Stonehenge?

Thur 10/17: Morning train to Edinburgh - time TBD, hopefully late enough to visit Platform 9 3/4 and HP Store :)

General Questions:

I plan to pre-buy Oyster Visitor cards for the adults - any recommendations on the amount to load on? It seems like the train/tube from LHR is our better choice than Heathrow Express . I anticipate using all the various public transport types but the clippers and bus more than the tube as the kids would do better on those.

Would dinner at BrewDog Waterloo and checking out the Leake St area graffiti be OK with kids (age 5/8)?

I'd love to fit in Leadenhall Market (for the Harry Potter factor) but it doesn't seem to fit anywhere - anyone have suggestions where to fit it in? Is it worth the HP hype?

My older daughter and I are big HP fans - any suggestions for fitting in any other bits of HP magic into our plans?

The Crossness Pumping Station has a tour on Tues 10/15, I am tempted to redo my plans to do this. I work in the wastewater treatment industry so I would love this, BUT doesn't seem like it's as family friendly/appealing for most as Greenwich. Someone talk me out of this wild idea ;)

Don’t buy any Oyster cards in advance, if you need them get them when you arrive. The cards posted to you are the visitor version which is not recommended on here, take it you are arriving at Heathrow Airport in which you can get them the recommended regular version there and cost £7.00 each.

Instead each adult can use a contactless payment method, card or phone set up to tap & go, for details see

princess diana walking tour london

If you are Harry Potter fans I can't believe you're not planning to do the Harry Potter studios tour!

https://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk/tickets/?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjwoPOwBhAeEiwAJuXRh0EYRaX-onJQ_1S5obpSh4NgRadpnaMchJCdhGmG62a4mNxujhePnxoCROcQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

Agree with #1. Would not waste money or postage on visitor Oyster.

As much as I want to go to the Crossness Pumping Station, it still has not made my "top priority" list after multiple trips. Not sure it is easy to get to, and with your very limited time, it could end up occupying the better part of a day. Will take you over an hour to get there.

Post #2 in the linked article explains how credit cards, phones etc work. Basically you need a separate card/phone as you cannot use the same device. However they can be linked to the same account as each card/phone is seen as a different payment method. You need to make sure you use the same device each and every day and not swop between devices.

The daily cap and fares are the same whether you use contactless or oyster.

BTW, remember to check back on the replies you got on your previous post at https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g186338-i17-k14554855-Preliminary_itinerary_for_Oct_2024_trip_with_kids_8_5-London_England.html#119015136

The producers of Matilda say "This production is not suitable for children under 6 years of age". The show is more than 2 1/2 hour long, far beyond the ability of a preschooler to sit quietly in their seat.

On your arrival day, consider joining a Fat Tire bike tour. Their office is in Waterloo, so the same area as your hotel and if you can leave your bags with them while you're out and about and then check in after the tour. It would be fun for your children and you'll tick off everything on your list for day one.

--Is Princess Diana Memorial Playground worth the extra walking mileage to visit?--

It's just a playground

--Would a mid-day stop at Greenwich market be a nice lunch break?--

Meantime Brewery is not near the history part of Greenwich . I wouldn't make a special trip to visit.

--Is TOL ok to not pre-book in October?--

Yes, you don't need to book tickets in advance

--How far in advance is it advisor to purchase theatre tickets?--

As far as you can. For a musical like Matilda, there's a chance you can get discount tickets on the day as it's been going for a while, but it's always a gamble.

--How long should we allow for dinner at Dishoom ?--

The same amount of time your would for any dining experience you have with your family

--is making a theatre performance that evening realistic time-wise?--

Sure. The sun sets at around 6.30pm in October, so I expect you'll be gone from Greenwich by then. You could make the later show.

--How far in advance is it advisable to pre-book the Brigit's Bus Tour?--

As far as you can.

--Any advise for a self-day tour of Stonehenge?--

Expect the conditions to be cold. Stonehenge is very exposed and can be windy

--hopefully late enough to visit Platform 9 3/4 and HP Store--

Be aware there are Harry Potter shops around central London now. They're popped up on Charing Cross Road and Oxford Street amongst other placs, in addition to KIng's Cross.

--I plan to pre-buy Oyster Visitor cards for the adults--

Don't bother. Just use a contactless payment option (card, phone or watch)

--It seems like the train/tube from LHR is our better choice than Heathrow Express --

--Would dinner at BrewDog Waterloo and checking out the Leake St area graffiti be OK with kids (age 5/8)?--

Leake St is fine. You'll be joining many other people for photos. I wouldn't bother with Brewdog. I've never found their food or beer to be anything good. There is a Philadephia themed diner in Leake St called Passyunk. Also a Polish restaurant and a Thai place.

Leadenhall Market is definitely worth visiting for the market buildings itself. Take a moment for a quick photo stop for the Harry Potter filming location as well. You can walk to there from the Tower of London .

With your limited time, I wouldn't bother with Crossness Pumping Station. It's interesting to visit, but not super easy to get to, and there's other things in London which will probably be better for you to visit with your family.

Best to write dates as DD/MM to avoid confusion

--if the same credit card can be used if both myself and my spouse have our own physical cards?--

Yes you can do that
