Welcome to the urban hub of southern Thailand where shopping malls mingle with wafts of Cantonese street eats and curry from the eclectic range of busy street-food stalls, as old Chinese men sit and watch the world go by on rickety chairs outside junk shops. It's a mix of busy city and laid-back tropics and the town's tourism scene is still predominantly Malaysian mixed with a few Western expats. Come evenings, Hat Yai's cosy pubs and bouncing clubs come into their own.

My 2D2N KL to Hatyai Train Trip – Cost Breakdown & Tips!

' src=

Table of Contents

In November 2022, my partner and I took a short KL to Hatyai train trip and took the ETS to Hatyai from KL Sentral.

This article covers (1) how we get from KL to Hatyai via train (and van), (2) cost breakdown of our KL to Hatyai trip, and (3) general tips you can use to make the same trip 🙂

The exchange rate at the time was approximately RM12.78 to 100 baht. Here we go!

How to get from KL to Hatyai by train

Taking the ETS to Hatyai for a weekend trip is easy enough in theory:

  • Buy ETS to Hatyai train ticket (we departed from KL Sentral)
  • Book accommodation
  • Exchange MYR to THB

But, the ‘going there’ part is actually a bit more complicated, because the KL to Hatyai train actually stops at Padang Besar KTM, which is 1 hour away from Hatyai . So, you have to:

  • Figure out your train to Hatyai departures and arrivals (takes 5.5-6 hours from KL to Padang Besar KTM, the last ETS train stop)
  • Figure out how to get from Padang Besar KTM to Hatyai (takes 1 hour++; your options: van and/or train and/or taxi)
  • Make sure to budget in enough time for 4x immigration queues per return trip (for me, as short as 5 mins and as long as ~20 mins)
  • P/s – Immigration opens from 6am until 10pm (Malaysian time) and 5am until 9pm (Thai time) so if you arrive outside those hours, you’ll need to wait
  • Do all this while mentally factoring in the 1-hour time difference between Malaysia and Thailand so you don’t accidentally miss your ride!

So actually, even though Kuala Lumpur and Hatyai are near geographically, you should expect the total time needed to get from KL to Hatyai – I mean from getting out the door until arrival to your hotel in Hatyai – to take around 8-12 hours or so, depending on waiting time.

As for where to go in Hatyai and stuff, it’s not hard to find out whatever information you need when you’re there. Just ask the booth attendants, or your fellow Malaysian travellers in the train or van. Most people are friendly and helpful 🙂

My 2D2N KL to Hatyai train trip

My itinerary looked like this:

Going there – KL to Hatyai train and van

  • ETS train from KL Sentral to Padang Besar KTM – depart 10.50pm, arrive 4.18am. Cost: RM102 per person
  • Van from Padang Besar KTM to Hatyai hotel – depart 6ish am (when immigration opens; took 1.5~ hours including 2x immigration stops. Cost: RM30 per person

Coming back – Hatyai to KL via van, taxi and train

  • Van pickup from Hatyai hotel to Malaysia-side immigration – depart 12pm ish, took 2~ hours including 2x immigration stops. Cost: RM25 per person
  • Taxi from Malaysia-side immigration to Padang Besar KTM. Cost: RM15 for 10 mins ride :/
  • ETS train from Padang Besar KTM to KL Sentral – depart 3.50pm, arrive by 9.30pm. Cost: RM76 per person

But this was my itinerary, not yours. Your train timing might be different, so decide based on that. Here are all the links you need to plan your trip:

  • KL Sentral to Padang Besar ETS – https://online.ktmb.com.my/
  • [Option 1] Padang Besar to Hatyai – via train (only runs 2x a day);
  • [Option 2] Padang Besar to Hatyai – via van (runs during immigration hours – will depart when van is full)

You can book the van from booth at Padang Besar KTM, it looks like this. When I asked around, apparently the price used to be RM20-25, but apparently it has increased to RM30.

Hatyai Makan Trip = Success!

My Hatyai trip was just a weekend trip and I had only one goal: to eat as much delicious Thai food as possible. Happily, I achieved that goal 🙂 Here are some pictures of the food we had on the trip (scroll for more pics).

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Suraya Zainudin (@surayaror)

You can’t go wrong if you hit these places:

  • ASEAN Night Bazaar (or any of the other night bazaars)
  • Khlong Hae Floating Market
  • Central Festival Mall (yes, the mall. Don’t knock it, the food court area is AWESOME)
  • Order from Grab Delivery (for Muslims, you can search by Halal)

I am happy to report that the food is CHEAP and GOOD. At most places, the range is between 40-70 baht per dish – RM5 to RM9. The seafood sets I saw cost 100-200 baht – RM13-26 per head. Unless you only eat at fancy places, I think you can eat well on around RM50 budget per person per day.

My 2D2N KL to Hatyai train trip: total cost

For 2 pax, we spent:

  • RM358 on return ETS train from KL Sentral to Padang Besar
  • RM125 to get from Padang Besar to Hatyai Hotel (Van + taxi)
  • RM228.80 on 2 nights accommodation at hotel
  • Around 1700 baht or ~RM220 on 2 days of food
  • Around 300 baht or ~RM40 on shopping (mostly I bought Thai cooking paste because it’s not bulky and much cheaper there than here!)

Total: RM971 for 2 pax. I could make it cheaper if:

  • Took the classic train from Padang Besar to Hatyai (60 baht or approx RM7.70 instead of RM30 per way)
  • Only book 1 night accommodation instead of 2
  • Book cheaper accommodation (you can get a pretty okay place for RM60-RM80 per night)

If I did all these, it would bring my trip cost down to approx RM750 or so but no regrets, we had a good time 🙂

General tips for your own KL to Hatyai train trip

Here are some things you might want to keep in mind for your own KL to Hatyai train trip:

1) Plan around train times and immigration opening hours . If you don’t, you might waste time just waiting

2) The Padang Besar to Hatyai classic train is cheaper than van (60 baht vs RM30). I actually wanted to take this option instead of the van, but the timing didn’t work for us. If I took that, I would need to wait at Padang Besar for 5 hours instead of 2 hours.

3) Bring an umbrella in case it rains (we almost got soaked while dropped at immigration)

4) Unless you can sleep anywhere, I wouldn’t recommend taking the overnight ETS. I couldn’t sleep at all on my train from KL to Hatyai – fellow passengers were noisy and the lights were bright. But up to you.

5) If you arrive at Hatyai hotel super early and before check-in time, say 8am or so, I would recommend booking the night before so you can check in immediately upon arrival to rest. This added RM100+ to my cost but was the best decision I made the whole trip!

P/s – Don’t forget to activate Shopback when you book from Booking.com or Agoda, might as well earn cashback

tour to hatyai

6) Recommended to pack light as stairs/infrastructure are not in the best condition and you might struggle with heavy luggage

7) You can buy Thai sim card at Padang Besar KTM, but I just bought day passes from Yoodo – just RM5 per day (or RM13 for 3 days)*. I know other telcos charge waaaay more than that

*Note: This is price for Thailand. Different countries, different prices.

8) Bring your Bigpay or Wise debit card – places like malls and 7-Eleven accept them and rates are better than credit card

Any more KL to Hatyai train trip to share?

Lots of Malaysians have made the same KL to Hatyai train trip, some multiple times, so I’m sure you have more tips than I do 🙂 What advice and tips would you give to someone wanting to make the same train to Hatyai from KL trip? Share with us in the comments!

You can cut down even more.

Van from KTM charge around RM30 and send straight to your hotel in Hatyai.

Then otw back, from your hotel in Hatyai, take grab to Hatyai bus terminal, and van from there charge around 600baht to Thai immi.

If you’re the kind who travel light, you can hitch on motorbike for 100baht from Thai immi to MY immi.

hehe I love going to Hatyai. Pre-covid time, me and my colleagues would go twice or thrice a year. Cause we stay up north. 🤭

Wait are you recommending otw back to kl, grab to bus terminal then additional 600 baht to Thai immigration? That seems abit excessive? My friend solo trip and said it’s around 300 baht from his hotel to Thai immigration tho

avatar-name

Cheng Sim  •  Jan 09, 2024

Hat Yai is where you should go to escape the retail madness of Bangkok and the lively nightlife of Phuket. Only a short flight or a rewarding drive away from Kuala Lumpur, Thailand's fourth-largest town has something to offer beyond the mouthwatering Thai food, charming town and fascinating street culture.

If there's a free weekend on your calendar, give Hat Yai a chance to show you what they've got! Besides the city's sights and sounds, this three-day itinerary (under RM600!) will showcase a side of Hat Yai that's waiting to be explored. To help you plan your trip better, we've also included the cost of food, attractions and accommodation per person in a group of 4. Do note that we've excluded the cost of shopping and flight, bus or train from your hometown to Hat Yai.

We've split this article into days for easy access! Check out Day 2 and Day 3 here!

Your next adventure awaits! Subscribe to our weekly newsletter to explore breathtaking destinations, get insightful travel tips and itineraries!

Getting there

AirAsia airplane

  • Take a flight from Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) to Hat Yai International Airport (1 hour 15 mins)
  • The average ticket prices are between RM330 and RM450 per person (return flights). Any rates above RM450 per person (return flights) are considered pricey.
  • From Kuala Lumpur, take a 6-hour drive to Padang Besar in Perlis.
  • Present your passport at the Malaysian immigration checkpoint
  • At the Thai immigration checkpoint, present a few documents including an original vehicle registration card, a photocopy of your road tax, the driver's driving license as well as the driver and passengers' passports.
  • Other documents like Thai vehicle insurance form, car information (inbound and outbound), the driver and passengers' arrival card and passenger list form can be registered at the town itself before crossing the Thai border.
  • Once approved, continue your drive from Padang Besar to Hat Yai (1 hour)

  • Take the KTM ETS train from KL Sentral to Padang Besar (5 hours 30 mins). The fare starts from RM80 per person (one-way)
  • Once arrived, you need to go through the Malaysian and Thailand immigration counters. It's best to arrive an hour early before you catch the next train to Hat Yai.
  • Take the Thai train from Padang Besar to Hat Yai station (25 mins). There are only two train timings: 9.55am and 3.40pm. The fare starts from RM7 per person and tickets can be purchased at the counter.
  • If you missed the train, there are shuttle vans, Grab car and tuk-tuks available in Padang Besar.

P.S. Love Hat Yai? Then check out these 5 spectacular train journeys you should take with your girlfriends in Malaysia!

  • Take the bus from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan) to Hat Yai (8 hours 30 mins).
  • The fare starts from RM60 per person (one-way)
  • Do note that most buses will only wait up to 20 minutes at the Thailand immigration checkpoint. You'd also need to bring your luggage to be scanned at the immigration clearance process.
  • When purchasing your bus ticket, always choose Hat Yai as your drop-off point (Chee Uthit Road or near Lee Gardens Hotel). For drop-off point at Da Nok immigration terminal, you need to hire a taxi or tuk-tuk to Hat Yai.

Accommodation

Hat Yai is a fairly small city so finding accommodation in a good location won't be hard. As a rule of thumb, try to book a hotel near around Hat Yai train station, Odean Shopping Mall and Lee Gardens Plaza.

Hotel room in Hat Yai

  • Most of the hotels around the area are 3-star hotels and prices range from RM110 to RM150 per night for a double/twin room. Some hotels we'd recommend with halal breakfast are V.L. Hatyai Hotel and Golden Crown Grand Hotel .
  • For those of you looking for something more upscale, the prices range from RM180-220 per night for a double/twin room. Some hotels that are popular with travellers are Centara Hotel , Lee Gardens Plaza Hotel and Diamond Plaza Hatyai Hotel .
  • If you're planning to save more on accommodation, there are many hostels around the area with prices below RM100 per night.

Cost for 2 nights (on average, per person for Double/Twin room): RM120

Arrive in Hat Yai and getting around

  • As the largest city in Thailand's Songkhla province, Hat Yai is best known for its lively street markets, bustling culture and delicious Thai food.
  • Since Hat Yai is massive, the attractions are situated far from one another.
  • If you're travelling within the city, getting a taxi or ride-sharing apps like Grab is the most convenient way to get around. The rates for GrabCar range from around THB40 (RM5.30) to THB90 (RM12) for travelling within the city. The rate for travelling from the airport to downtown Hat Yai is THB250 (RM33).
  • If you're thinking of exploring outside of the city to Songkhla Old Town, we recommend booking a private driver or renting a car for a day. The typical rate for a private car charter for 1 day ranges from THB1200-1500 (RM159-199, depending on the number of places you're intending to visit). You can approach your hotel staff if you're interested in getting a private driver as they will usually have contacts for drivers.
  • For this itinerary, assuming that you'll be exploring outside of the city for 1 day, we'll be including the price of a 1-day private car charter (THB1500 for 4 people).

Cost (per person, on average): THB375 (RM50)

Shop for snacks at kim yong market (1 hour).

  • Kim Yong Market is packed with local vendors selling dried fruits, snacks and peanuts at amazing prices.
  • Buy a packet of cashew nuts, dried strawberries or for the road. The price for bulk buys usually goes by weight.
  • Asam boi is also a grandmother's remedy for car sickness, especially when you're moving around on a car or tuk-tuk. Buy a small packet for yourself, just in case.

  • Explore deeper into Kim Yong Market to spot cheap clothes, sandals and handbags.
  • The rule of thumb for bargaining at Kim Yong Market is to ask politely if the vendor can lower the price. If you buy in bulk, there's a chance that they'll give you a better discount too.
  • Be courteous and bargain only if you're interested to purchase their products.

Cost: Varies on your spending

Lunch at Hamid Restaurant Hatyai (1 hour)

  • A 5-minute walk from Kim Yong Market, Hamid Restaurant Hatyai is a charming lunch spot that's popular among Malaysian travellers.
  • Specialising in Malaysian and Southern Thai cuisine, this restaurant serves everything from nasi kerabu to nasi lemak ayam goreng.
  • To immerse yourself in the flavours of Thai, order the Thai SomTam and Steamed Ikan Bawal with Lime and Chili sauce.

Admire the view at Hat Yai Municipal Park (1 hour)

  • It may be a steep drive to Hat Yai Municipal Park , but it has one of the best vantage points to admire the natural countryside and bustling town of Hat Yai.
  • The afternoon heat may get to you at this point, so slap on some sunscreen and put on your best hat.

  • Besides exploring the public recreational park, there's a 20-metre golden Buddha statue named Phra Buddha Mongkol Maharaj for a wonderful snapshot on a sunny day.
  • Since it's an active place of worship, visitors are encouraged to remain respectful at all times.
  • Admission rate: 300 baht (RM41) per adult; 150 baht (RM21) per child

Cost (per person): THB300 (RM41)

Dinner at Food Court ASEAN Night Market (1 hour)

  • Take a 1.5-hour drive from Hat Yai Municipal Park to ASEAN Night Bazaar
  • You may be tempted to shop, but dine in the food court first because it'll be dinnertime when you arrive

Street food

  • Walk into ASEAN Night Bazaar, head over to the second floor to find a food court that serves a variety of street food and Thai cuisine
  • Look out for the Muslim-owned stalls that serve pan-fried crispy mussel with bean sprouts, shrimp fried rice, roasted chicken with rice and more. The prices here are really affordable, around THB50 for a dish.
  • You can also spot vendors selling refreshing local drinks, such as Thai milk tea and iced green tea, as well as fruit juices too.

Cost (on average, per person): THB50 (RM7)

Shop away at ASEAN Night Bazaar (2 hours)

  • Now that dinner is out of the way, it's time to shop till you drop at ASEAN Night Bazaar
  • A famous shopping spot among locals and tourists, it can get crowded during the weekend. If you're travelling in a group, it's best to set up a meeting point at the bazaar's main entrance.

ASEAN Night Bazaar

  • Sprawled with many shops, stock up on affordable clothes, shoes, handbags and accessories.
  • Parents can also score good deals on children's clothing, toys and shoes.
  • When bargaining at ASEAN Night Market, start with a price that's 20% lower than the retail price. Then, haggle with a smile until you reach a comfortable price point between you and the vendor.

Holiday hot spots nationwide gearing up for long weekend fun

Hat Yai district of Songkhla is expected to welcome as many as 100,000 Malaysian tourists to join the Songkran festival this weekend.

The number of Malaysians travelling over the holiday has grown this year, as it coincided with the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, said Sitthipong Sittipatprapha, president of the Hat Yai-Songkhla Hotel Association.

My Sawasdee, a special train from Malaysia to the district, arrived in Hat Yai on Friday morning carrying more than 400 passengers after an 11-hour journey from Kuala Lumpur.

The passengers will get to enjoy a weekend of splashing water in the city before returning to the Malaysian capital on Sunday.

The train is run by Malayan Railway Ltd, which operates special routes between Malaysia and Thailand during festivals. Seven more trips are expected this year.

In Betong district of Yala, a Songkran event kicked off on Friday under the theme “Hom Sabai, Sai Jeans”, or “Wearing a traditional shawl with jeans”.

Chaya Chaowalit Road in the downtown area was packed with tourists from Malaysia and Singapore enjoying activities including water fighting, a foam party and stage performances.

The event is scheduled to wrap up on Sunday.

In Chon Buri, at least 3,000 Chinese tourists flocked to Pattaya Water Space, the resort city’s newest tourist attraction.

Some came directly to the city on charter flights under a visa-free policy for Chinese citizens.

In Khon Kaen, a major Songkran event was set to kick off on Saturday with ceremonial merit-making at the City Pillar Shrine in the morning and light and sound processions in the evening.

Meanwhile on Khao Niew Road, one of the province’s biggest Songkran venues, an alcohol-free “human surfing” event has been organised over a 1.3-kilometre stretch.

“All the hotel rooms are now fully booked. We expect to see over 700 million baht in circulation during the event,” said Heerasak Theekayupan, the mayor of Khon Kaen town.
