The escape room was very fun and thrilling. We booked a room as a group and it was great! Our room operator Karah was very nice and made the experience great!

It's a pretty awesome boat. Even if you don't decide to go through the museum, you can admire it from the shore for free, either on the beach or along the long pier, and get some pretty spectacular photographs. Parking is mostly street parking with a few scattered lots, so my recommendation would be to arrive early, close to when the museum opens to get a spot rather than be stuck driving around hunting for one. My husband and I were lucky enough to snag a street spot with no fee/meter and walk a short distance to the entrance. You can either walk up the gangplank or wait for the shuttle to take you up, depending on your ambulatory needs; it didn't seem to take very long for the shuttle to go back and forth. Tickets are purchased at the entrance to the boat and were reasonably priced for the whole day as a self-guided experience. There are something like five unique tours that go throughout different sections of the ship, and depending on how much time you spend looking at everything, doing all of them could easily take you the entire day/trip. I got burnt out after the third one, it was a bit of visual overload! The tour I liked best was of course the one up to the flight deck, because it got me outside in the sunshine (the rest of the ship is quite chilly, so bring a sweater) and I got to see all the nifty fighter planes they have on display. You can also step into the gunner turret, or take a seat on the side guns. Pretty awesome. The one thing I will say is that the restrooms are NOT convenient. Even for someone like me who is able-bodied, you either have to go to the far end of the ship where there is only like a single stall (and therefore a massive line) or down the really steep stairs and around a tight bend. Just something to know. There's a cafe type deal on one end of the ship that serves some amount of food, but nothing particularly amazing. Really just something to nosh on quickly to regain your energy to keep exploring the ship. Kind of feels like a missed opportunity, really. The video/display of the ship's kitchen's operation back when it was in service looked tastier, LOL. The gift shop is alright. The kind of stuff you'd expect to see like t-shirts, patches, kid's toys, etc. I only got a $1 bill exchanged so I could utilize the penny squishing machine, personally. Nothing else really appealed to me. Their merch selection could be better/more unique. They had an escape room too, if that's your jam, but we didn't try it. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area, especially if you're big on history or naval stuff. I've also been to the U.S.S. Hornet in Oakland, and it was pretty comparable.

Such a great experience to see how our navy men and women lived and served our country. Launched in 1942, this had some pretty advanced communications for its time. We did the self guided tour which was amazing. I think going in a guided tour you may have been able to go into other places/rooms but we were happy with what we did. ***** wear tennis shoes there is miles of walking and climbing through port doors, up and down steep ladders, uneven floor surfaces. If you have trouble walking or wheeling a stroller or wheelchair, they do have an elevator, but what you can see or where you can go is very limited. Highly recommend touring this and probably any other naval ship.

We toured this right away on a Tuesday morning. Age 60 gets you a senior admission discount. Toured main level before 10:00 video in theater. Toured all levels where sailors lived, dentist, clinic, chapel and aircraft carrier deck and bridge deck. The size was utterly massive. This naval aircraft carrier was featured in the movie Pearl Harbor. Lots of climbing up and down ladder steps. Be aware of physical limitations for older people and young children. Was definitely worth the visit. Thank You to all who serve in the armed forces. Review 37 in 2023.

The USS Lexington Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in World War II history or naval aviation. The exhibits are very informative and well-curated, and the view from the flight deck is simply amazing. The gift shop has many fun souvenirs, and there is also a cafe on site where you can get lunch or snacks. I spent about 4 hours at the museum, and I could have easily spent more time. I learned a lot about the history of the USS Lexington and the role it played in World War II. I also enjoyed seeing the different exhibits on naval aviation, including a flight simulator and a model of the USS Enterprise. The highlight of my visit was the view from the flight deck. It was incredible to stand on the same deck where planes took off and landed during World War II. I could see for miles in every direction, and it was a truly awe-inspiring experience. Overall, I would highly recommend the USS Lexington Museum to anyone who is interested in World War II history or naval aviation. It is a truly educational and enjoyable experience.

This ship is an attraction you need to experience while on North Beach in Corpus Christi. It is soooooooo big and you can do guided tours or self tours and walk through and on a majority of the ship. You really get to see how the crew lived on board and all the intricate the ship is with all the little areas for sleeping, eating, dentistry, barber and captains quarters. If we had more time there were Escape Rooms and Theatres within the ship. Next time, I will definitely take advantage of some of those features.

I love the history of this Ship and the escape rooms are fun and challenging. Will definitely be back when my kids come down.

Very interesting information! I could spend all day in there. Many areas to go, food area, and extra add ons like a movie or an escape room. I wouldn't bring younger kids unless they are interested in war crafts/history. Fun way to learn.

A visit to the USS Lexington is great for everyone, especially for plane and military enthusiasts, engineers, and even movie buffs with plenty of photo ops. You can walk up or wait to take the shuttle to the Lexington where you can purchase your tickets. They offer children, youth, senior, and military discounts. If you get there early there is beachfront metered parking right next to the Lexington or some nearby lots with $5/day parking. You can use the QR code for the self-guides tour you listen to or go at your own pace reading the signs. There are different levels you can explore, my favorite being the flight deck and the air conditioning during the movie offered every hour. It was really interesting to see how the Navy men and women lived in such tight quarters and learning about Pearl Harbor. The downside, if you have seniors or family members with strollers or difficulty walking, there are A LOT of stairs. There's only one elevator from level 1 to take you up to the flight deck and there are many levels to see. This tour if you visit all the levels and watch the movie will take you a few hours to complete. The bathroom situation can also get tricky if you wait for one stall or go to lower level for many stalls.

I am NOT a museum lover . My attention span is like 90 mins to two hours tops walking around looking at things. Today I was surprised that I lasted nearly 2.5 hours onboard the USS Lexington today in downtown Corpus Christi TX. I found the exhibits very educational and really enjoyed all of the vintage airplanes available on the deck of this ship. I would return another time.

See the Blue Ghost: USS Lexington Aircraft Carrier

Visit the Blue Ghost, a WWII Aircraft Carrier docked in Corpus Christi, TX.

Why You Should Visit the Lexington?

Sometimes kids hear the word “museum,” and you can watch their eyes glaze over in predetermined boredom. Well, this is not that museum. This field trip is immediately exciting as you walk across the gangway to board a retired aircraft carrier from WWII. The Lexington is a completely immersive experience bringing 1940s wartime to life.

Fun Fact: The Lexington served in the Pacific War and was mistakenly reported sunk four times by Japanese forces earning it the name “Blue Ghost.”

Where to Begin Your Field Trip

There is a dedicated parking lot for Lexington.

2914 Surfside Blvd, Corpus Christi, TX 78402 << Exact address for your GPS

(You will purchase a parking token with your museum admission to exit the lot.)

Head up the gangway to the admission counter where you will get a guide of everything there is to see. It doesn’t matter where you begin, but we recommend the 3D film if your timing works out well. Shows run every hour on the hour.

lexington tour corpus

What Can You Expect to See & Do While on board the Lexington?

The Museum is divided into 5 sections or “tours” which are self-guided routes you follow at your own pace. Each tour’s entrance is located on the hangar deck and is very well marked with a large banner flag. You’ll wind your way through different parts of the ship, but all tours begin and end on the hangar deck level where you purchased your tickets.

lexington tour corpus

Tour 1 is the Flight Deck. Explore the massive (more than 2 acres) floating airfield. The 3D film does a great job of explaining how jets were able to take off and land from the scaled-down runway. Several aircraft are on display for great photo-ops. Then, climb to the top of the crow’s nest for a bird’s eye view. This is probably a good time to press play on your Top Gun soundtrack.

lexington tour corpus

Tour 2 is the Foc’sle (or forecastle.) For those of us not fluent in nautical terms, this is the upper forward part of the ship. On this tour, you will view the anchoring machinery and an exhibit on the Lexington’s role in the film Pearl Harbor, as well as officer’s quarters.

lexington tour corpus

Tour 3 is the Gallery deck. Here you will see what the captain’s life looked like onboard. Then, take some pictures in one of the ready rooms once used by WWII pilots before flying missions.

lexington tour corpus

Tour 4 is the Lower Decks. This is where the crew slept and had meals, or visited the doctor. See the sickbay, dental clinic, galley, and chapel. This tour also has a well-done exhibit on the Texas Navy. Then peruse a scale model gallery of ships and aircraft from around the world.

lexington tour corpus

Tour 5 is the Hangar Deck. You enter and exit the ship on this level, and it is where every tour begins and ends. Many WWII aircraft and vehicles are displayed here. Kids will love climbing into the Blue Angels cockpit or posing in the brig for their maritime jail mug shots. The 3D theatre, flight simulator, Mess Deck Café, and gift shop are all located on the hangar deck.

USS Lexington Museum

Corpus Christi

Moored just north of the ship channel and aquarium, this 900ft-long aircraft carrier dominates Corpus Christi bay. The Lexington served in the Pacific during WWII and was finally retired in 1991. High-tech exhibits enable visitors to relive wartime experiences on five self-guided tours. Each evening, in keeping with its WWII nickname ‘the Blue Ghost,’ the ship is eerily lit with blue lights. Admission includes a 3-D movie in the on-board Mega Theater, and there’s even an escape room (extra charge).

Price & Hours

  • Facilities 3.0
  • Atmosphere 5.0

Following its commission in 1943, the USS Lexington was a combat aircraft carrier with the 5th Fleet at Pearl Harbor during World War II. Now, the retired ship rests in Corpus Christi Bay and serves as a museum where visitors can learn about the ship as well as naval aviation and battle.

Exploring the ship is split into five different self-guided tour routes. Routes explore different areas of the ship including the flight deck, the hangar deck, crew quarters and the forecastle (the area where anchoring took place). Guided tours are also available and have different themes. Visitors can choose from paranormal tours, an experience that takes patrons to parts of the ship not available on the self-guided tours and a tour that explores the launch experience of a pilot on an aircraft carrier. The USS Lexington also hosts its own escape room and offers virtual battle stations and a flight simulator, among other attractions.

Past travelers overwhelmingly agreed that the USS Lexington is a must-do in Corpus Christi. Recent visitors valued the wealth of information the exhibits offer as well as the variety of attractions.

The ship welcomes patrons from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily year-round. Tickets cost $16.95 for adults, $11.95 for children ages 4 through 12 and $14.95 for seniors and military service members. Children 3 and younger can visit for free. Guided tours and the flight simulator cost an additional fee. The escape room requires reservations and has an extra fee, but the fee includes admission to the museum. The USS Lexington is docked in the bay, just north of the Texas State Aquarium and about a mile south of North Beach . For more information, visit the ship's website .

#1 Padre Island National Seashore

This barrier island stretches along the Texas coast for 113 miles, though it's split into two islands. While its southern section, South Padre Island, is a well-known spring break destination, Padre Island offers a calmer seaside getaway near Corpus Christi. In particular, travelers rave about the island's national seashore, a 70-mile stretch of land protected by the National Park Service, for its pristine beaches, calm atmosphere and space to spread out.

At the national seashore, travelers can build sandcastles on the beach, windsurf on Laguna Madre (a small body of water that is saltier than the ocean) or hop on a four-wheeler and cruise down the sands. If you time your trip for a summer visit, you may even be able to catch a sea turtle hatchling release. Remember that these releases have no set schedule as the baby turtles will hatch when they like. And if you're looking to save on accommodations, you can do so here by camping on the beach. Just know that camping is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

10 Things You Need to Know About the USS Lexington Museum

Jump aboard the USS Lexington Museum and discover the history of her role in WWII while engaging in hours of fun for the whole family. Read on for information to know before you go.

1. History of the USS Lexington

The USS Lexington was an Essex Class aircraft carrier commissioned in 1943. It served in the Pacific theater for about 21 months during World War II, earning numerous combat records. After a brief decommissioning in 1947, it was reactivated in 1955 primarily for Navy training. By the 1980s, it became clear that maintaining this World War II-era vessel was costly, leading to its replacement by the USS Forrestal as a training carrier in 1990. Corpus Christi secured the USS Lexington as a museum through community support and a bond sale, and it has been open to the public since November 14, 1992, becoming a significant attraction in the Coastal Bend area.

2. The Blue Ghost

The USS Lexington is famous for its resident ghost , Charlie, a well-mannered sailor with piercing blue eyes, wearing a vintage white Navy uniform no longer used by the ship’s staff. It is believed that Charlie was killed during a Japanese kamikaze attack in 1944, and he is known to dazzle visitors with his intimate knowledge of the ship and its engines.

Both visitors and staff have reported hearing ghostly sounds like chains dragging, elevator movements, as well as encounters with other spirits. The ship earned its nickname "Blue Ghost" from Japanese folklore due to its legendary World War II history, during which it survived numerous attacks.

3. Escape Rooms

Try one of the ultimate escape rooms exclusively aboard the ship, if you dare! Get up close and personal with each show including sight, sound, and an educational view into the real action with aviation, flight, and history, creating an unparalleled 3D experience.

Admission to the Mega Theater is free with your paid admission to the Ship! The theater is wheelchair accessible and closed captioned with CaptiView for visitors with hearing impairment.

5. Flight Simulator

Do you have what it takes to be an F/18 pilot? If so, jump in the 15-seat simulator and join the men and women in the training exercise, “Screaming Eagles” and be prepared to launch off the aircraft carrier, hit every target, complete your air to air mission, and land safely. The Flight Simulator is located on the Hangar Deck during regular operating hours and there is a $5.00 admission fee per person.

6. Take a Tour of the Ship

Take a tour aboard the ship! If you prefer to go it alone, there are five different routes , covering 100,000 square feet, eleven decks, and interactive displays that you can explore at your own pace and discover the many stories behind the ship’s history. If you have questions along the way, look for their “yellow shirt” volunteers (many of whom served on USS Lexington!) They know all the ins and outs of the ship and will be happy to assist you.

If you prefer a guided tour, try one of three guided group tour: Flight Operations, Hard Hat, or Paranormal Investigations. These special, behind-the-scenes experiences are guided by volunteers and are scheduled upon request. Please note that guided tours should be booked at least 2-3 business days in advance to allow for scheduling a guide and payment processing.

About the Ship

Whether you’re a history buff or merely an interested visitor, learning a bit about this storied vessel and national landmark is one of the most entertaining and exciting things to do in Port A. Originally commisioned in 1942, the 910-foot-long Lexington was in the final stages of construction when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The vessel quickly completed training and sailed to the US base to join the Fifth Fleet. This huge Essex Class aircraft-carrier was initially named the US Cabot, but when the original ship bearing the Lexington name sunk in a battle with Japanese forces off the coast of Australia, the Lexington name was reinstated. The ship was unofficially known to adversaries as ‘The Blue Ghost,’ due to the numerously reported sinkings and its resilient returns to battle. Throughout its Pacific Theater career, the Lexington and crew shot down hundreds of enemy aircraft and sunk millions of tons of cargo. After World War Two, the vessel served as a presence during various conflicts and for training purposes until its retirement in 1991 to Corpus Christi Bay, less than an hour from Port Aransas.
