Hailing from Bridgend, Wales, Bullet For My Valentine have become one of the biggest acts out of the new crop of heavy metal bands, blending classic NWOBHM vibes with a contemporary, metalcore twist.

In the early 2000s, Bridgend, Wales was a furtive ground for metal and rock acts, producing Funeral For a Friend and Lostprophets, before Bullet For My Valentine came to the fore in 2004. Formed by school friends Matthew Tuck (vocals, guitar), Michael Padget (guitar, vocals), Jason James (bass, vocals) and Michael Thomas (drums), the band came together in 2003, out of the ashes of Jeff Killed John. Having established their sound, Bullet For my Valentine were signed to Visible Noise after their second gig, impressing with their refreshing take on the modern metal scene.

The band went into the studio, recording their self-titled EP in November 2004, a release that established their name in the rock and metal sphere, finding critical acclaim. Their debut album, "The Poison," appeared the following year, before the band then signed to American label, Trustkill Records, who distributed their album in the US. Rounding out a successful year, the band were awarded with Kerrang!'s 'Best British Newcomer Award,' before they then embarked on a headline tour. Their debut album was released in America in 2006, which gained them a support slot for Rob Zombie on a nationwide tour. Sales for "The Poison" soon reached 500,000 copies in America alone, with Bullet For My Valentine returning to the UK to play a high profile slot at Download Festival.

In 2008, their second full-length arrived, "Scream Aim Fire," which broke into the Top Ten in several countries (five in the UK and four in the US). After embarking on further tours, the band returned to the studio for their third effort, with "Fever" being released in 2010. Displaying a more mainstream sound, the album again travelled high up the charts, making Bullet For My Valentine one of the most popular metal acts of the day.

After this success, the band took a short break, whilst frontman Tucker recorded an album with his side project, AxeWound. Returning back to his original act, Bullet For My Valentine began work on their fourth record, with the result being "Temper Temper," which hit the shelves in February 2013. The album continued to find Bullet For My Valentine commercial success, peaking at number 13 on the Billboard 200.

Live reviews

I have been a fan of Bullet for My Valentine for a long time, so when I was alerted that they were coming to Leicester on their "Venom" tour (along with two of my other favourite bands; Coldrain and While She Sleeps) I immediately set to obtaining a ticket.

This was the first metal gig I had ever been to so I wasn't really sure of what I was in for.

The O2 Arena, where the concert was hosted, was completely packed with fans of all three bands, the energy from the crowds overwhelming from the very moment I stepped inside. I was one of the youngest and smallest people there, so I managed to worm myself through the tight crowds until I was quite near the front.

The concert began with warm-up acts Coldrain and While She Sleeps, who were both true to their purpose, making me only more psyched for the headlining act.

When Bullet took to the stage, the small venue was even more packed than before, with hundreds of fans all chanting the band's name. They kicked off the concert with "Raising Hell" to which the crowds proudly raised their fists and sang along to.

The flashing, colourful lighting made the whole venue seem to flicker in and out of existence as the crowd and mosh pits danced and jumped around to the heavy beat.

The band tore through their song list, including songs from all four of their albums, including "Scream, Aim, Fire" and "All These Things."

When the opening of "Tears Don't Fall" crashed around the venue, the crowd went wild; their singing near drowning out the music itself.

As we all filed out, bruised, soaked in beer, and with hoarse voices aching; I couldn't help but think that it was the best concert I had ever been to. If you have not yet gone to a Bullet gig- I'm telling you- buy a freakin' ticket.

Not known for their charisma, Bullet for My Valentine continue to sell out venues on the strength of their music and the intense manner in which they recreate it onstage. The Welsh rockers have only released four albums over their long career but there is a sense of quality over quantity. The audience are made up of intense fans and from the opening bars of 'Raising Hell' they proudly raise their arms in unison and rock along with the frontman Matt Tuck.

The group tears through a setlist that reaches from all years of their career and delight fans with classics such as '4 Words (To Choke Upon)' and 'Scream Aim Fire' which the crowd sing back at deafening levels. All that could outdo the sound created by this thousand strong backing choir is the huge guitars and drums that create gargantuan instrumentals onstage. The stage setup and performance is all incredibly scarce for a band of BFMV's status yet there is a sense that they prefer to let the music speak for them as opposed to the show.

When the opening bars to 'Tears Don't Fall' begin, even the lighting and stage itself seem redundant to the fans as all they are interested in is this fantastic piece of rock. With their throats sore from singing and bodies bruised from moshing, the audience file out in excited chatter about one of their best gig experiences.

Bullet For My Valentine are a four piece heavy metal band that plays just as aggressively as their name suggests. Hailing from Wales, these guys are far from your typical Welsh boys: Bullet For My Valentine are incredibly intense and are famous for rocking out (hard) on stage. They are obviously incredibly passionate about what they do and this translates on stage. They put all their energy in to their performances and into their instruments. Frontman Matt Tuck has great, powerful vocals and the rest of the band are incredibly talented musicians. They played a whole array of songs that spanned their entire career, from their early years to their latest tracks. The stage lighting was as intense as the performances and really added to the atmosphere of the night. The set itself was minimal which let the lights and, most importantly, the music do all the talking. Or screaming, I should say. The band belted out ‘Raising Hell’, ‘Scream Aim and Fire’ and ‘Temper Temper’ to wild cheers and screams from their devoted fans. ‘All These Things’ was a particular highlight, as the whole crowd sang along.

The thing about Bullet For My Valentine is definitely not the energy they show on stage, they practically stand still. It's the ability to catch the energy from the albums and make the music speak for itself.

I saw them first time in 2008, when they released "Scream Aim And Fire" which was their true breakthrough to become the arena-band they deserve to be. The record was so good they skipped a lot of old songs and in later years, when they released "Fever" and especially after "Temper Temper", they realised that the true fans would always show up no matter what.

The audiences slowly became smaller but the sheer joy from the fans would never fade, the screams are not more silent and BFMV started to play more old favourites instead of just play new records. "All These Things" and "Hand Of Blood" sound fantastic when everyone sing it with passion.

I've seen them on five different occasions and I can't stop going to their concerts. The music is just too good.

The venue was small (Hard Rock in Sioux City, IA) and even Tuck mentioned how small it was right away, but the show was full of fun. Band sounded great and the new bass player knocked it out of the park vocally and bringing the energy. This was my second time seeing them live.

I may be a little biased being such a huge BMFV fan but they rocked it throughout. I personally thought it was a short setlist, but that's only due to me liking so many of their songs. The setlist was cohesive, made a ton of sense musically and basically shredded the entire night with only a couple of the slower tunes they provide. I recommend anyone who has even the slightest bit of interest in these guys from Wales to go check them out. You (I imagine) will not come out of it disappointed. I cannot wait to see them again

Well that was so great than I can tell. BFMV is my favorite band ever ; I was 16 when I've discover it. That was my first concert. I'm almost 23, and I've seen the band became more aggressive...for my biggest pleasure.

Last night (20/11/2016 AB) spent so quick. 1h20 was like 10mns. The better songs have been played. I have jumped, screamed, sang all along. The crowd was like an unique crazy men. I've been squashed and pushed for my biggest pleasure. Just so perfect metal fans union.

Thank you so much to Matt, both Michael and Jamie for that show. A part of me is still there, enjoying. I'm quite sad about the fact the concert is over.

IT WAS ONE OF THE BEST CONCERTS I'VE EVER BEEN TO IN MY WHOLE LIFE AND I WISH I COULD GO BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BFMV FUCKING ROCKS \m/

They played so many great songs, sadly none from Temper Temper, but they played their new song 'Don't Need You' and totally rocked it! They were so full of energy and there was not a single moment where I did not want to bang my head or scream at the top of my lungs or put my arms in the air! First row was fucking great and I'd totally watch them again! Also, the meet&greet I won along with some other fans was so cool! That day was one of the best days in my life <3

Their concert at The Eatons Hill Hotel was awesome, i have been to many concerts and theirs was the best by far. I would definitely go and see them again even though it was brutal with crowd surfers and people do the Death Row/Run well that is what we call it over here but people might call it the wall of death. I woke up sore the following day but it was well worth it. I have been waiting for years to see them and definitely got my moneys worth. They were bloody awesome.

rikki-leigh’s profile image

It was OK. I expected to be more energetic and charismatic, but they were fine. I am comparing to Three Days Grace show that was in the same stage and it was waaaaay more energetic and better. Also a lot of discomfort was by some drunk dudes that were mashing like everything without thinking about the rest. Of course its normal for this kind of concert, but I was going there rather to listen and sing great songs instead of protecting my girlfriend from random injuries.

aswords’s profile image

It was awesome. They played a mix new and old songs so you could enjoy the songs you know and love and get to know their newer work. BFMV played loud, played the crowd and the crowd returned the favor with energy.

Killswitch Engage played before Bullet for my Valentine. It sounded better than their albums which quite impressive since this is usually not the case.

Overall very good show and pretty nice venue (013 in Tilburg, The Netherlands)

TRIVIUM And BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE To Team Up For Tour Celebrating 20th Anniversary Of 'Ascendancy' And 'The Poison' Albums

TRIVIUM and BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE are teasing what appears to be a joint tour celebrating their 2005 albums, "Ascendancy" and "The Poison" , respectively.

The two bands took to their social media today (Tuesday, February 20) to share covers of the LPs in nine constituent parts.

TRIVIUM 's second album and Roadrunner debut, "Ascendancy" was voted "Album Of The Year" by Britain's Kerrang! magazine. It was also officially certified gold in the U.K. for sales in excess of 100,000 copies.

Last August, TRIVIUM singer/guitarist Matt Heafy brought up the upcoming "Ascendancy" anniversary and said from the stage during the band's U.K. tour: "We should probably do something about that." He later declined to elaborate in an interview with Metal Hammer , telling the magazine: "I always love to leave some kind of Easter egg that's very public, but I don't know what I'm saying. We'll have to see what that means."

Last December, BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE frontman Matt Tuck hinted at a tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of "The Poison" , writing in a social media post: "We have a massive announcement to make soon that will make 2025 be a very special year for us so stay tuned for that."

BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE guitarist Michael "Padge" Paget previously hinted at "The Poison" 20th-anniversary tour in a July 2023 interview with "Mike James Rock Show" . At the time, he said about the band's plans for next couple of years: "'24 we'll be writing an album. And then 2025 we'll be back. [2025 is] an anniversary of something big."

"The Poison" was released in October 2005 in the U.K. via Visible Noise Records and four months later in the United States through Trustkill Records . The LP is BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE 's most commercially successful effort internationally, earning a gold certification from the RIAA in the United States and BPI in the United Kingdom, as well as a platinum certification by Bundesverband Musikindustrie ( BVMI ) in Germany.

Last November, Heafy joined BULLET FOR MY VALENTINE on stage at Hard Rock Live in Orlando, Florida to perform the Welsh metallers' classic song "Tears Don't Fall" , which originally appeared on "The Poison" . Fan-filmed video of his appearance can be seen below.

Bullet For My Valentine Release Their Own Honey Mead

Bullet For My Valentine have collaborated on a new honey mead called Waking The Demon

Bullet For My Valentine Release Their Own Honey Mead

Bullet For My Valentine have announced that they are releasing their own honey mead.

Teaming up with Lyme Bay Winery, the Welsh metallers have created Waking The Demon honey mead, which is described on the official website as having "a rich honey flavour with balanced acidity, honeyed notes and a backing of gentle spice."

Mead is the oldest recorded alcoholic drink and has a long connection with metal. Festivals like Bloodstock sell mead at their bars, and Amon Amarth frontman Johan Hegg's Viking company Grimfrost brew their own batches.

READ THIS: 7 things you probably didn't know about Matt Tuck

"Bullet for My Valentine has commissioned a mead as a drink they love and feel their fans will love too," reads the Waking The Demon website .

"Waking The Demon Honey Mead is a ferment of honey, water and spices to create a smooth, rich drink which can be enjoyed on its own or mixed as a base for cocktails.

"Like the Demon, there is hidden strength here (14.5% ABV) and not to be toyed with!"

A number of bands have released their own alcoholic beverages in recent years. Most notably Iron Maiden's Trooper empire, but everyone from Deftones and Megadeth to IDLES and Coheed & Cambria released their own beers in 2019.

A press shot of Bullet For My Valentine in the Poison era, stood outside on rubble

Bullet For My Valentine have always split opinion. Since forming as Jeff Killed John – Jeff? As in, Jeff?! – in 1998, the Welsh four-piece have been branded as future Download headliners and wannabes, sometimes in equal measure. Wherever you sit, there’s plenty to discuss.

So join us as we replay the hits, the misses, and the ones where they kinda hit but nobody was really paying attention. Here’s Bullet For My Valentine’s back catalogue ranked in order of greatness.

Metal Hammer line break

7. Temper Temper (2013)

We all make mistakes. Some of us have that ex-partner, others have that old haircut. Bullet have that album . Temper Temper sticks Fever ’s sweaty, sleazy hard rock template in a cold shower, scrubs it dry and imposes an age restriction on its mobile phone.

Matt Tuck’s never been the strongest lyricist, but his embodiment of a soldier in P.O.W. is borderline treason. In a slightly less offensive display of ineptitude, Truth Hurts’ cry of, “Truth hurts like a bed of nails” becomes even naffer courtesy of that bloody silly Layne Staley impression.

Coming from a band of this stature – four albums down the line, no less – it’s not good enough. Riot ’s about as edgy as a dildo, Tears Don’t Fall, Pt. 2 makes the original sound like Bohemian Rhapsody, and Tuck’s lyrical and vocal whoopsies throughout make Temper Temper a dud.

6. Gravity (2018)

For an album called Gravity , Bullet’s sixth effort is well flat. Promptly unwinding all the goodwill and excitement surrounding 2015’s Venom , Tuck and friends have a stab at the Imagine Dragons big-drum-woah-plus-some-electronics shtick. It’s about five years too late, though.

What we’re left with is a sexless, lifeless go at ‘radio metal’ that’d make the staunchest Five Finger Death Punch fan rag the handbrake, do a U-turn, drive to Wales and whip Bullet For My Valentine with a wet American flag.

The songs themselves aren’t even badly composed – there’s just barely any teeth on this thing. It’s all so safe and sanitised, Not Dead Yet and The Very Last Time ’s twee, cloying lyrics even more noticeable given the beige instrumentation and delivery. When Don’t Need You ’s throwback pace kicks off track ten – ten! Come on, lads – it’s like the girl from The Exorcist popping up in the Barbie movie.

Gravity’ s not quite the shitted bed of Temper Temper, but it’s not far off.

5. Bullet For My Valentine (2021)

“I want to take people's heads off in a metaphorical way” isn’t a David Brent quote. Rather, it’s a straight-faced line from Tuck on the promotional trail for Bullet’s seventh, self-titled album.

They were heavier, but more melodic (again). They went back to their roots (again). BFMV ’s merits come from its meat-and-potatoes construction, but that’s where the cracks begin to show: there’s not much going on. It’s nice to hear them appear genuinely angry on Parasite and Knives, even though the latter only excels because it sounds like a Machine Head B-side. It’s all a bit clinical and second-guessed.

But hey, the announcement of BFMV’ s back-to-basics approach clinched them that coveted Download headline slot. Finally! OK, it was the 10,000 capacity, COVID Petri dish Download Pilot. Still. Squint, and the word ‘Pilot’ becomes very blurry.

4. Scream Aim Fire (2008)

So The Poison was kind of a big deal. The year after its release, Bullet were third from the top at Download Festival, kissing only the feet of their equally hyped-up Welsh brethren Funeral For A Friend and, well, Guns N’ Roses. And to be fair, if Bullet had just given us The Poison, Pt. 2 , they'd have gotten a kicking anyway. Scream Aim Fire bypasses this crucifixion by extracting the whiffs of melodeath from their debut and making it a bit chunkier. Pacier.

Tuck’s shouted vocals have James Hetfield written all over them, Michael ‘Moose’ Thomas’ drum fills on Eye Of The Storm sound like the four horsemen rushing to call shotgun, and overall, Scream Aim Fire ’s great.

Yeah, all right, Take It Out On Me could probably be binned were it not for Skindred’s Benji Webbe turning in a star performance, and Say Goodnight ’s balladry falls short of the subdued Metallica/In Flames hybrid it hoped to spawn. But they can’t all be zingers.

3. Venom (2015)

After a portion of their fanbase checked out after Temper Temper , Bullet screamed in the ears of anyone left listening with their fifth record, Venom . It’s still got Tuck’s melodic kick in stuff like Broken and Army Of Noise, while the thrashing, nosebleed-a-minute headbutt of No Way Out is glorious to hear. Refreshing, even.

You might call it a cynical step backwards, but due to guitarist Michael ‘Padge’ Padget being Kirk Hammetted and left out of Temper Temper ’s recording, Venom feels like the record Bullet should have made following Fever . Cheese-laden lyrics and a couple of cack ballads aside, Venom is a genuinely great Bullet album that deserves more than it got.

2. Fever (2010)

On the run-up to Fever, Tuck told Rock Sound that Bullet is “a hard rock band with metal influences, and I’ve said that from day one.” Never could that’ve been truer than on their third album. The tyre-slashing tempos are exchanged for undeniable groove, but you still get that faster, wind-up-and- ARGH sugar rush from tracks like Pleasure & Pain and Pretty On The Outside.

At a time when Killswitch Engage had become palatable as can be, when Trivium were still apologising for The Crusade , Bullet had the nerve to record a track like Alone. The orchestra-tinged, far-reaching limbs of that song grapple for heights only then scaled by their other contemporaries, Avenged Sevenfold. Fever is a blinder, despite the title track’s lyrics reading like Adam Levine’s DMs.

1. The Poison (2005)

The setbacks. The bed-shitting. The transparent grabs at relevance. They’re all valid points to dismiss Bullet, but there’s a reason the band are still held to high standards today: The Poison.

Front to back, their debut LP is a shot of melody, heaviness and dexterity straight to the cranium and out the other side. The Gothenburg-inspired riffing’s here in buckets through Cries In Vain and the masterful Her Voice Resides , and Bullet’s ballads have never been as brilliant as they were back here. Tears Don’t Fall remains a masterclass in epic, sing-along soppiness and All These Things I Hate (Revolve Around Me) ’s instantaneous, loserish loneliness could’ve been a radio mainstay were it not for the, well, metal bits.

They’ll probably never recapture that crisp, fresh-out-of-the-box power they had on The Poison . But they’ve shown promise. There’s something left. In the meantime, dust off your New Rock boots, twiddle your thumbs, and wait for the inevitable anniversary tour of The Poison in full. Again.

“I honestly can’t believe it’s been 20 years since the release of The Poison, and what an incredible 20 years it’s been”, said BFMV frontman Matt Tuck in a press release.

He continued: “I feel so proud of what we’ve achieved as a band in the last two decades and it all started with that debut album. The Poison is such an important part of our lives musically and personally and we know the massive impact it had on the metal world on a global level. This tour will be made even more special as our brothers in Trivium are also joining us on the road to celebrate and play in its entirety their stunning album Ascendancy.”

“Bullet For My Valentine’s ‘The Poison’ and Trivium’s ‘Ascendancy’ are two records whose influence can be heard to this day – in the DNA of modern metal,” added Trivium frontman Matt Heafy.

“It’s incredible to think of the impact the albums had when they came out in 2005. They were both like bolts of lightning. Both bands grew up independently of each other in different countries and separately from any movement or scene but both shared a common love of melodic heavy metal at the core; and both had similar meteoric rises right out of the gate,” he shared.

He continued: “Trivium and BFMV were in such whirlwinds when our respective albums came out that we each never truly got to play together or sit back and celebrate during the maelstrom of constant touring, recording and globetrotting. But that’s what this anniversary tour is. It’s a celebration by the bands to the fans of an important era, and most importantly it’s an invitation to fans come and have an epic night with us and sing and rage and celebrate the awesome power of the music.”

“This is going to be the metal tour of 2025,” concluded Tuck. “Bullet For My Valentine and Trivium The Poisoned Ascendancy World Tour 2025. Celebrating the 20th anniversary of both albums and playing them in their entirety. Get excited people, it’s going to be special and we can’t wait to celebrate with you all.”

The announcement of the joint tour comes two days after speculation that the two were set to join forces after they each shared a very similar set of posts online , hinting to fans that a new announcement was on the way.

On February 20, both bands posted nine photos onto their respective Instagram accounts at the same time. For Trivium, the nine images made up the cover artwork for their second studio album ‘Ascendancy’, when put together, while Bullet For My Valentine’s made up the artwork for their debut LP ‘The Poison’.

As well as posting the same format at the exact same time, the update also comes as both of the albums will be turning 20 next year – hinting that some form of anniversary celebration is lined up for 2025.

In other Trivium news, Matt Heafy confirmed last year that the American band had  no current plans to work on new music, and were apparently ready to take a hiatus  following a 2023 tour.

“This time, when this tour cycle ends, we’re gonna take a true break, and instead of working on music, we’re actually gonna work on building our Hangar studio, so that way when it comes time to make records, we can do that again,” he said at the time. “But there are currently no plans for a new record. And I’m not being deceitful there. There’s no plans right now.”

The hangar he refers to is Trivium’s current home base in Orlando, Florida.
