Midsomer Murders Tour of Locations

Read reviews

The Midsomer Murders Tour will transport you into the charming yet sinister world familiar to DCI John and Tom Barnaby and uncover the real locations that have given the show its distinct character since it was first broadcast in 1997.

Starting in London you will head to the towns and villages of the deadly county of Midsomer which are actually situated across several English counties including Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire that have played a role in more than 250 suspicious deaths over the years in the first eight series alone.

On this 8 hours tour your day will be crammed with thatched cottages, Norman churches, pretty villages and quite a few murder spots featured since the show was first aired back in 1997. You’ll be getting on and off the bus a number of times so you can take pictures of the pretty locations or crime scenes, depending on your point of view.

You’ll be taking lunch in the picturesque town of Henley-on-Thames which has featured in several episodes and you’ll also get the chance to have cream tea at a Midsomer location in the afternoon.

For those of you who haven’t seen Midsomer before or perhaps would like a refresher we will play clips of various scenes during the day.

The Midsomer Murders tour will give you behind the scenes information about the show featuring Inspector Barnaby and reveal fascinating details about the historical places you visit that have appeared in numerous episodes.

  • LauraK883 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing- small group larger than advertised and uncomfortable! This trip was disappointing. Deceptive advertising- the info blurb says the small group tour had “ a maximum of 15” but there were 18 on our tour. The tour bus had NO legroom- all of us had our knees jammed in, my 6’1 and 6’2 husband and son had to stick their legs out into the aisle to get moderately comfortable. Other participants complained of this as well. Our tour guide Jed was very nice but the amount of content re Downton Abbey could be improved. He did do a fun quiz on the way home. All told, it was clear that quality was sacrificed so that the organizing company could squeeze out extra money from these tours- the coach comfort has GOT to be improved. If the trip serves a maximum of 15 as advertised then stick to your own advertised standard- and take out the extra seats that makes everyone feel jammed in! The uncomfortable seats set off the trip on a bad note- unnecessarily. Read more Written 5 May 2024

We went to the location anyway and waited per their instructions. No one showed up so we tried chatting and calling the number on our confirmation. Now when asking for a refund, these scammers are lying and will not give us a refund for the four of us because they say that the tour did go on and that they were there. Midsomer Murders Country - Thame & Henley on Thames

Visit the thriving market town of Thame (the most filmed location of Causton). Like many traditional market towns, Thame grew from Anglo-Saxon roots but has since developed its own individual character whilst preserving its rich history; ancient medieval buildings stand alongside Georgian and Victorian architecture and the iconic boat-shaped high street stands as testimony to the market place for which it was originally designed.

Also, Henley on Thames - first described in the 12 th  century and is until today considered as one of the most beautiful English market towns with many interesting historical buildings. Its historic St Mary’s Church, the Town Hall, the market square, many local shops, plus its own theatre/cinema, mean Henley is a delightful place for mooching about.

Keep your eyes peeled, we might just catch sight of John Nettles or Neil Dudgeon!

Midsomer Murders Group Tour

Fans of the DCI Barnabys will know that this popular television drama takes place in one of the most picturesque corners of England, the fictional county of Midsomer. Characterized by its great country houses, traditional pubs, village greens and Sunday afternoon cricket, the apparently idyllic villages of Midsomer are also the scenes for some of the most evil, ingenious murders screened on TV.

  • The traditional market town of Wallingford, the original 'Causton', with its 9th Century streets, half-cobbled square and Elizabethan town hall. The first ever episode was filmed here. The local theatre doubles as Causton theatre and Barnaby is often seen walking in the Market Place or driving across Wallingford Bridge.
  • Dorchester-on-Thames, one of the prettiest Midsomer villages, where the medieval Abbey church, coaching inns and post office are all locations.
  • Thame, often used as a general backdrop, to see the Town Hall which appears as Causton Town Hall, plus a local hotel and tea room which also feature in the series.
  • Stonor House, one of the oldest manor houses in England.
  • Historic Mapledurham House and Watermill, now the only working watermill on the Thames, where visitors can enjoy a traditional cream tea made with flour from the watermill. Filming has taken place here twice recently.
  • Great Haseley and church, which has been used for wedding and funeral scenes, plus the village hall, possibly the most filmed location throughout the series.
  • Watlington, reputedly the smallest town in England whose library features as Causton library.
  • Henley on Thames, a much-loved tourist destination which has featured in several episodes. See the numerous shops and streets which have been used as well as the Town Hall, Bridge and Market Square.
  • Greys Court, a 16th century mansion which has appeared as both a monastery and a priory.
  • Warborough where fans will recognise the familiar houses, village green and traditional Six Bells pub which all appear in the opening credits.

What Our Clients Say

I was very fortunate to be on their 70th and 75th D-Day celebration tours. The service and attention to details was exceptional. It was very moving to go back.

As a Jane Austen enthusiast, this tour was perfect - and the Jane Austen Festival in Bath was just fabulous to see!

Words fail me...The Downton Abbey was a perfectly wonderful travel experience! We did not know we would be the ONLY guests at the Abbey. When we realised how truly exclusive our tour was we were speechless! Surreal being there and actually meeting Lady Carnarvon.

Welcome to midsomer.

Welcome to Midsomer County, where the countless murders in the hugely popular ITV show, Midsomer Murders, are relentlessly solved by DCI Barnaby and his faithful sergeant.  But where are the quaint, picturesque English towns and villages that make up Midsomer County? Or rather where did the show’s makers choose to film the series to represent them?  Well, the majority of them are in the real English counties of Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire and right in the centre of those counties is Thame.  Thame has been used extensively for filming many episodes, sometimes as Causton and sometimes as any one of the many Midsomer villages.  What’s more most of the villages around Thame – such as Long Crendon, Cuddington, Great Haseley, Sydenham, Bledlow and many more – have also been extensively used for filming.

“My husband and I recently went on a tour and had Geoff as our guide. He was really knowledgeable and friendly. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to any Midsomer Murders fan! We had a look around the Museum too and the staff were really helpful and welcoming.”

“We took part in a Midsomer Walking Tour of Thame on Tuesday. The sun shone for us and Tony, our guide, was great. It was a fascinating tour and we learned lots about Midsomer and Thame. In fact, we have already decided to go back and visit several locations again – including Thame Museum, the start point for the tour and various eateries that we encountered along the way.”

Fans of Midsomer Murders from all over the world, eager to see some of these filming locations for themselves, arrive in Thame looking to find them.  And the more adventurous fans venture out into the surrounding countryside to find the many more locations nearby.  Thame Midsomer Tours was formed in an effort to help with this search and can offer:

Our lead showing the Spreadeagle in Thame.

My thanks to Jo Wattis for sharing her photos and of course to Jackie Wiggins for organising the trip.

Our guided coach tours through the land of Midsomer Murders were much appreciated by all on board. The pace was relaxed and although not far out of our locality, we learnt a lot from Tony Howe’s commentary and tales about the history of both specific buildings and local landmarks, as well as filming locations. Several members have returned to spend more time exploring the attractive towns and villages (and garden centre) that we passed through and visited. In Thame, some ardent Midsomer Murder fans diligently followed a trail to discover the many film locations in the town. Others thoroughly enjoyed their time round the market. Yet others discovered fine cuisine and enjoyed a relaxed lunch and good company. Some people found time for retail therapy. It is rewarding to have received so many thanks for organising these outings. Feedback is always appreciated in order to fine tune future ventures. Jackie Wiggins

Midsomer Murders confirms air date as series returns for season 23

The cosy crime drama is back!

Now into its whopping 23rd season, Midsomer Murders will be back on our screens sooner rather than later - with the release date for the anticipated new run having been revealed.

Midsomer Murders season 23 will premiere on ITV1 on Sunday 14th April at 8pm with the episode entitled The Blacktrees Prophecy.

So, not very long to wait at all! The acclaimed murder mystery series will once again see plenty of crimes plague the idyllic Midsomer county, but will DCI John Barnaby and DS Jamie Winters be able to crack them all?

Having first aired back in 1997, the crime drama has been a mainstay on our screens, providing gripping storylines, twists and even some cameo appearances.

More recently, presenter Holly Willoughby featured on the show last year, after initially being announced back in 2021.

More like this

The Dancing on Ice presenter had previously said that she was a long-running fan of the show, and appeared in the episode The Witches of Angel’s Rise.

Midsomer star Neil Dudgeon said at the time: "Well, she’s sort of a friend of the show, I suppose – she’s a great fan of the show and we’re always looking to broaden our casting net."

He added: "She was great, she was thoroughly professional. I think she was a bit nervous when she first arrived. She’s playing a character called Holly Willoughby, I wouldn’t like to say that it’s herself."

John and Jamie standing behind Hattie in a stone tunnel

Most interestingly, he also revealed at the time that her appearance was filmed a couple of years prior, due to the shooting schedule for the ITV drama.

So, there's plenty more episodes to come with such future planning in the pipeline.

As of yet, though, there haven't been any announcements made about further cameo appearances from any other well-known faces, but as is often the case, there will be plenty of guest stars to get acquainted with – and suspects in the process.

The cast will once again be helmed by Neil Dudgeon as DCI John Barnaby, the younger cousin of DCI Tom Barnaby, Midsomer Murders' original star. He'll be joined by Nick Hendrix, who features as John's right-hand man, DS Jamie Winter.

We'd be confident that Fiona Dolman will reprise her role as John's wife, Sarah, while we can expect to see a return for Annette Badland as pathologist Fleur Perkins.

  • Levi Brown on the "mad roller coaster" of starring in Steven Knight's This Town
  • Wolf Hall reveals first look at season 2: The Mirror and the Light

As for what the new season will entail and who else will be joining our lead detectives, we'll just have to wait and see - but the previous season included cases centring on urban myths, an opera society theatre murder and the annual Midsomer Scarecrow Festival taking quite the deadly turn.

While exact episode details are yet to be released, we're sure another trip to Midsomer will only stir up plenty more weird and wonderful cases for the team to tackle – we can't wait!

Midsomer Murders season 23 premieres on ITV1 on Sunday 14th April at 8pm. If you're looking for something else to watch, visit our TV Guide or take a look at the rest of our Drama coverage.

Acorn TV Announces Premiere Date for Season 24 of Midsomer Murders

In some cases, we earn commissions from affiliate links in our posts.

Last Updated on November 19, 2023 by Stefanie Hutson

If you've been waiting for new on season 24 of Midsomer Murders , you're in luck! The cast and crew have been hard at work, and the new episodes aren't far off.

When Will Midsomer Murders, Season 24 Premiere?

midsomer murders coach trips 2023 dates

The US premiere date has just been announced. Season 24 will premiere on Acorn TV on December 4th. For now, we don't have details on other countries or platforms.

Over in the UK, fans have had a much longer wait for the last few seasons – so it's quite possible they'll still have a bit of a wait.

What's Midsomer Murders About?

midsomer murders coach trips 2023 dates

Midsomer Murders is one of the longest-running mysteries currently on the air in the UK. Airing since 1997 (first with John Nettles as DCI Tom Barnaby, then with Neil Dudgeon as DCI John Barnaby), the series is based on Caroline Graham's Chief Inspector Barnaby novels.

Set in the fictional Midsomer County, the series follows along as two different DCI Barnabys solve quirky murders occurring in lovely little villages. It's a light mystery, and the murders often require some suspension of disbelief.

Past methods of death have included:

  • Pushed under logging lorry
  • Bludgeoned with cricket bat
  • Impaled with pitchfork
  • Beaten with slide projector
  • Hit with shovel, covered in snails
  • Electrocuted by truck connected to power transformer
  • Pushed down stairs and left in crop circle
  • Crushed by desk in antique shop
  • Bashed over head by wheel of cheese
  • Trampled by cows
  • Boiled in beer vat

Like many cozy mysteries, the killings in Midsomer Murders are more often driven by relationships and personal issues – greed, jealousy, revenge, and so on. The murders are most often solved by sifting through the relationships rather than psychological profiling, in-depth surveillance, and data analysis work.

If you like a clean mystery with minimal on-screen sex and violence and you haven't tried Midsomer Murders …you should get started.

What's Happening in Midsomer Murders, Season 24?

midsomer murders coach trips 2023 dates

So far, episode titles and descriptions have not been released. For now, there's nothing to suggest we'll see anything other than the usual 3-6 episodes set in beautiful villages – featuring an average of 2-3 murders per episode.

We've yet to see any official episode count or anything about major cast changes.

Who's Returning for Season 24 of Midsomer Murders?

midsomer murders coach trips 2023 dates

Neil Dudgeon will be back as Barnaby, along with Fiona Dolman as his wife Sarah. Social media photos suggest that Nick Hendrix will also be back as DS Jamie Winter.

Beyond that, there's been no indication that Annette Badland (Fleur Perkins) is going anywhere anytime soon – but also no confirmation that she's currently filming.

We've yet to see details about guest stars for season 24. Once they release more details, we'll update.

Catch Up on Past Seasons of Midsomer Murders While You Wait for Season 24

midsomer murders coach trips 2023 dates

If you haven't already seen all the episodes several times each, there's no better time than the present to get started. In the US, you can watch older seasons of Midsomer Murders on the following free-with-ads services:

  • Roku Channel

If you want to see both older seasons AND the most recent episodes (season 23), you'll need a subscription to  Acorn TV . They were the exclusive US location for the season 23 premiere, and they're ad-free (unlike the free services mentioned above). You can also purchase episodes on DVD or a variety of streaming services like Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, or Apple TV.

If anyone needs us before the season 24 premiere, we'll be re-watching “The Killings at Badger's Drift”. John Nettles, an Anthony Horowitz adaptation, and those sublimely creepy Rainbirds…does it get any better than classic Midsomer Murders ?

Where is Midsomer Murders Filmed?

midsomer murders coach trips 2023 dates

Over the course of 23 seasons and 25 years, Midsomer Murders has used many, many filming locations. Remember too that Midsomer is a county, not a village. Unlike shows like Doc Martin or Beyond Paradise , different episodes of Midsomer Murders take place in different villages – meaning loads of towns and villages are featured.

All the same, some towns and villages feature in quite a few episodes. They are:

  • Wallingford – This one was the original location for Causton, though it hasn't popped up as much in recent seasons.
  • Henley-on-Thames – Several locations in this lovely town have served as Midsomer sets – including the town hall and local butcher's shop.
  • Thame – This one's often used to portray parts of Causton, particularly the town hall and art centre.
  • Amersham – This Buckinghamshire village appeared in many of the most famous episodes – including “The Killings at Badger's Drift” and “Death of a Hollow Man”.
  • Dorchester-on-Thames – This impossibly pretty village is one of those places that make you wonder how it could possibly be fair that some people get to live in such peaceful locations – but it's a great place for spotting Midsomer filming locations, too. All of the town's historic inns have appeared in past episodes.
  • Watlington – This is where you'll find the Causton library, along with a number of other Midsomer locations. Their high street has also been featured.
  • Beaconsfield – This Buckinghamshire village served as backdrop for quite a few episodes. In “Ghosts of Christmas Past”, they inspect a grave in the local churchyard, and Barnaby bought new trousers in a local shop here in “Blood Will Out”
