Eco-friendly car rental: minimizing your carbon footprint.

Carbon-conscious driving

How can you minimize your carbon footprint? Reducing the use of combustion engines and developing new sustainable practices is a first step. But where does the rubber meet the road when it comes to carbon emissions?

Carbon is an essential element found in all living organisms and plays a key role in the Earth's carbon cycle. It exists in many forms, including CO2 and methane. These gases are essential for maintaining the Earth's temperature and supporting life as we know it.

But human activities, such as burning fossil fuels and deforestation, have led to an excessive release of carbon dioxide and other gases into the atmosphere. The increased concentration of these gases triggers the greenhouse effect, where these greenhouse gases trap heat from the sun, leading to global warming, unpredictable weather events and natural disasters.

Smaller footprints, bigger steps

What is a vehicle's carbon footprint, and how does it relate to greenhouse gases? When fossil-based fuels, such as gasoline and diesel, are burned, carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are released into the atmosphere. The more fuel a car consumes, the higher its carbon footprint.

A vehicle's size, fuel efficiency, and the owner's driving habits can also influence this carbon footprint. Typically, larger vehicles and those with lower fuel efficiency tend to produce more emissions, resulting in a larger carbon footprint.

What is an eco-friendly car rental?

Car rental companies have stepped up to offer great benefits for travelers who wish to minimize their impact on the environment. Rental companies can provide customers with electric vehicle and hybrid options, which produce lower or no tailpipe emissions. By choosing these environmentally friendly options, travelers can significantly reduce their environmental impact and contribute to fighting climate change.

Eco-friendly car rentals also help to improve air quality. Conventional vehicles emit pollutants that can harm human health and contribute to air pollution. Choosing eco-friendly car rentals helps to lower these harmful emissions and promote cleaner air in urban areas and popular tourist destinations.

The future of sustainable driving

The push for eco-conscious travel affects the entire automobile industry. Automakers are investing heavily in research and development to create more fuel-efficient vehicles and advance the technology that powers electric vehicles. We are now seeing an increasing number of electric and hybrid models on the market, offering consumers eco-friendly alternatives to traditional gasoline-powered cars.

And as technology continues to advance, we can expect a wider selection of electric and hybrid rental vehicles, making eco-friendly options more accessible to travelers worldwide. Improved battery technology will increase driving ranges and faster charging times, making electric vehicles even more practical for long-distance travel.

Actionable Tips

How to minimize your car rental carbon footprint?

Here is a handy list of sustainable tips and tricks to minimize your carbon footprint on the road and h ave a positive impact on the environment .

  • Renting from eco-friendly car rental companies : one of the best ways to keep an eye on your environmental impact when traveling is to search for car rental companies that prioritize eco-consciousness and offer electric and hybrid vehicles.
  • Driving more fuel-efficient cars : if eco-car rental options aren't available, you can still make an impact by driving smaller, more fuel-efficient vehicles. Newer model cars, though not emission-free, are designed to meet the more recent emissions regulations and will usually have a smaller impact on the environment.
  • Ride sharing : you may consider carpooling or ride sharing if you are planning a group trip. This can greatly reduce the number of vehicles on the road and minimize environmental harm.
  • Planning routes and travel : you can plan more efficient routes using GPS navigation to reduce your travel times and fuel consumption. You could also decide to plan group errands to cut down on the overall amount of distance you travel during your trip.
  • Car maintenance : proper car maintenance can improve your vehicle's overall efficiency as well as extend its lifetime.

How to choose between electric and hybrid vehicles?

The choice between electric and hybrid car rental will likely depend on your travel needs and preferences.

  • Electric cars: they are an excellent option if you want to eliminate exhaust emissions and enjoy a quieter, smoother driving experience. However, the availability of charging infrastructure and the driving range of electric cars may vary depending on your destination, although they are becoming increasingly common.
  • Hybrid vehicles: they offer a combination of electric and combustion engines. Hybrid cars provide better range and are generally available in a broader range of destinations. Hybrids are ideal for longer trips where charging infrastructure for electric cars may be limited.

2021 Best Eco-Friendly Car of the Year

By Cars.com Editors

What’s eligible: Any 2021-model vehicle that’s available nationwide regardless of when it was introduced or last updated.

Criteria: We consider all vehicles that reduce consumption and/or minimize the release of carbon and pollutants, regardless of fuel type. Vehicles that do so at a lower overall cost have an edge over those with steep premiums. The winner was chosen from among our favorites in five eco-friendly categories: battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, gas-electric hybrid, clean diesel and regular high-mileage gasoline.

eco car of the year 21 2 scaled jpg

Winner: 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E

Though pure battery-electric vehicles are arguably the most eco-friendly type — especially when fueled with cleaner electricity from renewable sources — Cars.com hasn’t rushed to select an EV as its Best Eco-Friendly Car every year, mainly for reasons of accessibility. Many Americans aren’t in the position to charge at home, and many of the most recognizable or even desirable EVs aren’t available nationwide, a requirement of ours. The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E meets our top criteria at a time when the need for zero-tailpipe-emission vehicles appears greater than ever.

In addition to its national availability and range as high as 300 miles, the Mach-E is what American buyers prefer but haven’t been able to find in electric form — a small SUV. While it’s called Mustang, it doesn’t behave like the namesake sports car. It’s better to say that the Mach-E was inspired by the Mustang, as evidenced by its aggressive, sporty looks.

Not that the Mach-E has anything to apologize for with its abilities. A choice of five trim levels are available at launch, with either a standard- or extended-range battery and rear- or all-wheel drive. The standard-range RWD model is no slouch, with an estimated 0-60-mph time of 5.8 seconds, but the upcoming GT model should be worthy of that storied trim, with an estimated 0-60 of 3.5 seconds.

It’s electric-car quiet in the Mach-E, unless you want some artificial engine noise, which you can activate at the flip of a switch. Acceleration is brisk; steering feel is excellent.

The interior is clean and minimalist, as many Tesla owners seem to prefer, but retains Ford’s excellent Sync 4 system functionality for a seamless multimedia experience. Most controls are in the massive vertical touchscreen, but it works well enough. There’s plenty of headroom both front and rear, and while backseat legroom can be a bit tight for a vehicle of this size, it has plenty of cargo room.

We do have complaints about the ride quality — it’s bouncy and unusual. But Mach-E  competitors are flawed, as well — more so, in our opinion, when viewed through the eco-friendly lens. In the end, the Mach-E covers more than enough bases to earn our selection as our 2021 Best Eco-Friendly Car of the Year. It has the body style, range, efficiency, charging capacity, design and nationwide availability to give EV sales a jolt like no model before it — and not a moment too soon.

2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid: Nominee

Plug-in hybrids haven’t caught on as well as they should in part because too many of them don’t have enough electric-only range. That’s not the case for the 2021 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivan, which can go an EPA-estimated 32 miles on a charge before its gas engine kicks in, and it delivers an EPA-rated 30 mpg combined in hybrid mode — well above the gas-powered version’s EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined rating with front-wheel drive.

The Pacifica minivan is no stranger to Cars.com awards, having taken home a few since its debut for the 2017 model year. We’re fans of its polished road manners, slick tech and innovative convenience features. Unlike many plug-in hybrids, the Pacifica made few compromises in its transformation to plug-in form unless you count the lack of the Stow ‘n Go captain’s chair option, because the underfloor bins these seats would drop into are occupied by the high-voltage lithium-ion battery pack.

The pack powers an electric motor that works in concert with the 3.6-liter V-6 gas engine when in hybrid mode. Although the hybrid weighs more than the regular model and has a bit less horsepower, it still accelerates briskly from a stop and is strong at highway speeds.

Although you’ll pay more upfront for the Pacifica Hybrid over the gas version, it’s eligible for up to $7,500 in federal tax credits that you could get back after filing your annual tax return.

2021 Hyundai Elantra: Nominee

We’ve spilled a lot of virtual ink over the growing number of mass-market plug-in SUV models, but the simple reality is that for many consumers, prices well above $30,000 remain a nonstarter. Here’s where a time-tested formula — high mpg, low MSRP — still holds true. The car that best meets that maxim for 2021 is the Hyundai Elantra, a redesigned sedan that combines outstanding fuel efficiency with strong value.

Most Elantra sedans pair a small four-cylinder engine with a continuously variable automatic transmission, a combination that proved more responsive in our testing than it might seem. The efficiency is undeniable: The Elantra’s base trim, the SE, earns an EPA-estimated 37 mpg combined, enough to make it the No. 2 most fuel-efficient gas-only car for 2021.

Fuel efficiency need not mean limited features or availability, however. As of this writing, the SE accounts for a workable 1 in 9 new 2021 Elantra sedans listed for sale on Cars.com. And its $20,655 starting price, including destination, includes enough standard convenience and safety features to earn our nod as the best overall value among compact sedans . Climb the trim levels, and fuel efficiency for most Elantras ebbs to a still-good 35 mpg combined; that’s better than most variants of popular rivals like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla.

2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid: Nominee

Plug-in vehicles might be the greenest choice, all other factors being equal, but not everyone has the opportunity to charge at home. For them, hybrids deliver the conventional ownership experience with better mileage than non-hybrids, and the 2021 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid does so in the vehicle type Americans love most.

The compact SUV class offers shoppers the taller seating position, greater cargo versatility and available all-wheel drive they want. One of the main trade-offs compared with a compact sedan has been cost — both upon purchase and at the gas pump. The RAV4 Hybrid, however, eliminates the fuel economy trade-off with EPA-estimated gas mileage of 41/38/40 mpg city/highway/combined — a better combined rating than any 2021 gas-powered compact sedan, and it’s also 10 mpg higher than the highest rated gas-only RAV4.

The extra upfront cost for this greater efficiency is less than you might expect. The base RAV4 Hybrid LE has standard all-wheel drive and is priced at $29,825, including the destination charge, which is just $1,100 more than a gas-only RAV4 LE with all-wheel drive. And even the base LE trim of the RAV4 Hybrid is well equipped.

In addition to being efficient, the RAV4 Hybrid’s gas-electric drivetrain is a smooth performer that delivers adequate performance. The SUV rides well, too, and the interior has the same passenger and cargo space as the gas-only RAV4. All in all, the RAV4 Hybrid delivers great fuel economy at an affordable price without sacrificing the attributes that make compact SUVs appealing.

6 Best Eco-Friendly Cars (for Every Budget)

fact-checked

last updated over a month ago by Maria Ramos

electric car tesla eco friendly

What comes to mind when you think of common eco-friendly cars?

You may imagine hybrid or electric automobiles, but these vehicle types account for less than 3 percent of U.S. auto sales in 2016 . Most environmentally friendly cars on the road run on gasoline, diesel, or biofuels.

The auto industry’s adapted in the face of climate change. Switching to alternative fuel sources is not your only option. You don’t need deep pockets to reduce your carbon footprint , either.

Thinking of going green and getting a new set of wheels? Before you break the bank and buy a Tesla, consider the relatively cheap eco-friendly cars on the market.

What Are Eco-Friendly Cars and How Are They Different from Other Vehicles?

electric car red tesla eco friendly

For the most part, eco-friendly vehicles use non-conventional energy sources. Examples of the latter are biofuels, electricity, and even hydrogen.

Some green car builds may still partially use fossil fuels. Others may combine two environmentally friendly fuels. These machines aim for better greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions ratings .

What about conventional cars developed to give you more traveled miles per gallon (MPG)?

Some might not consider these models as green vehicles. For others, they count because they also help the environment. Conventional cars aren’t as effective as those that don’t run on fossil fuels, but at least they’re better than gas guzzlers.

What Are the Common Types of Eco-Friendly Cars?

Green vehicles aren’t created equal. Some barely make a positive impact on the environment. Others are zero-emission machines.

However, the benefits of eco-friendly cars usually outweigh any downsides. Most environmentally friendly cars do slow the pace of climate change, after all.

Vehicles that need extensive modification before attaining green status don’t appear on this list. The latter includes compressed natural gas (CNG) and propane cars.

Below are quick descriptions of eco-friendly cars available to the general public, as well as make and model examples.

1. Fuel-Efficient Conventional Vehicles

fuel efficient car high mileage

Did you know that fossil fuel cars should be phased out by 2028 , according to a Greenpeace-commissioned study?

If not, climate change could cause irreparable damage to the planet. Conventional cars may be the most convenient to purchase right now, but they’re the worst for the environment, fuel-efficient or not.

If the option must be on the table though, it’s worth noting that many models benefit from cutting-edge technology . These advancements can lower emissions and refueling costs while improving mileage.

Here are two examples of fuel-efficient cars:

  • The 2019 Mitsubishi Mirage is one of the cheapest high-MPG fossil fuel cars around, with a great factory warranty, too. The only downside is the lack of attention to detail when it comes to human comfort. The Mirage has awkward seating and cramped legroom.
  • The 2019 Honda Fit boasts of a surprisingly spacious back seat. The first of this model’s kind came out the same year the brand retired the Honda Insight. Also known as “Jazz” in some countries, the Fit is one of several Honda models known over the past few years to easily average more than 30 MPG .

Certain physical features – like lighter weight and aerodynamic design – lessen a car’s carbon footprint, too. Choosing a diesel-powered car over a straight gasoline vehicle helps, too. The former can be up to 20 percent more fuel-efficient than the latter.

2. Biodiesel Vehicles

Biodiesel forms by putting oils through esterification , a refinement process that needs an alcohol catalyst like methanol or ethanol. Animal fat, canola oil, cooking grease, soybean oil, and sunflower oil are typical biodiesel bases.

In its pure and unadulterated form, you can call biodiesel B100. Many diesel engines can run on this without needing modifications. In the U.S., using biodiesel and diesel blends like B5 (5 percent biodiesel) and B20 (20 percent biodiesel) is common.

Here are two examples of biodiesel cars:

  • The Chevrolet Cruze was one of the early diesel cars with the brand approval to run on B20. Comfortable, compact, relatively quiet and reliable, the Cruze made B20 more accessible. Too bad the Chevrolet discontinued the model in 2019 .
  • The Jeep Grand Cherokee runs on B20, too. Among eco-friendly family cars, this SUV is a winner. You can choose between a rear-wheel or a four-wheel drive and even upgrade to a turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

Biodiesel burns cleaner but is more expensive than diesel. Constant car drivers may notice a slight cost increase in refueling after switching to biodiesel. The biofuel can also turn to gel in low temperatures and possibly clog internal filters.

3. Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFVs)

FFVs are gasoline-powered but can run on ethanol-blended fuel effortlessly. The most common variant of the fuel is E85 (85 percent ethanol). Great organic sources for the needed refined alcohol are corn and sugarcane.

One of the most striking facts about FFVs is that car owners may not always know if their gasoline-powered car counts as one.

How can you tell if your car can handle E85? Ask your vehicle manufacturer or look it up in the owner’s manual.

Also: If you purchased your car brand new after 2008 and it features a yellow-hued gas tank cap, it’s an FFV.

Here are two examples of FFVs:

  • The Nissan Frontier is one of those cheap eco-friendly cars that can still look adventure ready. If you need a vehicle for material transport or cross-country travel, this budget-friendly pickup is right up your alley.
  • The Ford Escape is not always E85-capable. Its 2013 and 2014 models don’t have FFV builds. As eco-friendly family cars go, though, it’s an affordable choice if you get the right model year.

Warning: If you choose to use E85, going green while driving may cost you more. E85 is close in price to gasoline, but it’s significantly less fuel-efficient. You will likely end up spending more to cover the same distance.

Why bother with biodiesel and ethanol-gasoline blends?

Simple: It’s not so much a money-saving ploy or even an environmentally friendly one, but a way to be less dependent on fossil fuels and global trade.

Because biodiesel base oils and ethanol are both easy to source, it’s also easy to manufacture the needed fuel locally for many countries.

4. Electric Vehicles (EVs)

electric vehicle plugged in

EVs may be one of the most popular eco-friendly cars. A recent AAA survey claims that 1 in 5 U.S. drivers will likely consider an EV for their next car purchase.

The undeniable pop culture presence of the Tesla brand and its CEO, Elon Musk, may have something to do with the widespread awareness.

Instead of a gas tank and an engine, EVs have a battery and an electric motor. These cars have zero tailpipe emissions and boast of the highest miles per gallon gasoline equivalent (MPGe).

However, charging EV batteries may possibly contribute to air pollution. The electricity has to come from somewhere, and it’s not always going to be sustainable.

For instance: If you plug your EV into a charging station – at home or on the road – and the outlet draws power from a coal plant, the source’s byproducts will harm the environment.

Here are two examples of EVs:

  • The Hyundai Ioniq Electric has been the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE)’s to p greenest vehicle in the U.S. for three years, since 2017. It is affordable and also co mes in two different hybrid builds.
  • The Tesla Model 3 is as close to budget-friendly as the brand can get. However, the standard build doesn’t come with a long-range battery and can’t reach the coveted 130 MPGe – you need to pay a lot more for that.

EVs are well-known for being much pricier and more luxurious than other eco-friendly cars, despite models like the Ioniq Electric.

There are even auto enthusiasts that commission six-figure fossil fuel-to-electric conversions from specialty shops like U.K.’s Lunaz Design.

The latter, and several auto shops like it, can expertly retrofit custom vintage vehicles with EV components and other modern conveniences.

5. Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles (FCVs)

FCVs are similar to EVs conceptually, except they use hydrogen as fuel onboard. Unlike EVs, which can take longer to charge, refueling an FCV takes only minutes.

These cars burn clean with only heat and water as emissions. While they’re amazing for the environment, practical use is limited for now.

In the U.S., there are only a few FCV fueling stations in California and Hawaii as of 2020. The market is currently small.

Here are two examples of FCVs:

  • The 2019 Hyundai Nexo is the first FCV to go through and ace all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tests. On Hyundai’s 2020 agenda are the testing and subsequent market release of the Neptune, an FCV truck.
  • The 2020 Toyota Mirai is a medium-sized sedan with an EPA-estimated driving range of over 300 miles. Quiet and comfortable, it’s one of the few FCVs available for commercial purchase in 2020.

Japan’s Ministry of the Environment is also reportedly working on a sleek and durable but lightweight hydrogen fuel cell car.

However, it’s referred to as a nano cellulose vehicle (NCV) – not an FCV – because it’s made completely out of wood .

6. Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)

Hybrid Electric Vehicle Plug-In car

EVs are likely the most popular of all types of eco-friendly cars, but hybrids seem to be the most attainable and easily understandable for the everyday consumer.

These vehicles have both fuel engines and battery packs, plus a needed charging port at home for PHEVs.

Depending on the model, fossil fuels or biofuels can power the engine. Most battery packs are electric-powered, but a few are hydrogen-powered.

Let’s differentiate HEVs from PHEVs: The former predates the latter and is sometimes known as the self-charging or conventional hybrid.

Unlike PHEVs, HEVs cannot recharge while plugged in at a port. They use gas engines to operate and charge their batteries, sometimes having trouble drawing from electric power alone.

You may associate the Toyota Prius with this type of green vehicle, but the more fuel-efficient HEV during the early hybrid days was actually the Honda Insight .

Starting with the original 1999 two-seater model, Honda continued to improve on the design until they discontinued the Insight in 2014.

During the Insight’s full run, its reputation as the best HEV rarely dipped. Today, nearly every major vehicle manufacturer offers multiple HEV models.

PHEVs have the same parts, but many do not operate the way HEVs do.

Often, these models can use gas power and electricity at the same time to power themselves as their batteries charge. As long as you keep the gas tank filled, you won’t need to plug in your PHEV.

Here are two examples of hybrid cars:

  • The Toyota Prius is the iconic hybrid model for a good reason. The original 1997 four-door sedan Prius was the first-ever mass-produced HEV. It was also one of the first hybrids to offer intelligent all-wheel drive (AWD). The Prius remains the top-selling HEV to this day, although sales have steadily declined since 2012.
  • The Kia Niro enjoyed a boost in publicity in 2019 when the brand ran an ad campaign for the model featuring actor Robert De Niro:

Available in EV, HEV, and PHEV form, the latter is particularly impressive. Why? Fuel economy is great even when the Niro PHEV isn’t charged, easily maintaining 60 MPG .

Another way to use PHEVs is to plug them in to completely recharge. Because these machines can take hours to do so, charging overnight is a typical routine.

Once fully juiced up, some PHEVs can operate on electricity only with zero emissions. When the battery pack runs out, the fuel engine kicks in, provided the gas tank isn’t empty.

Gasoline provides the needed power to keep the vehicle going, almost as a last resort.

To travel further distances between recharging periods, you can add larger and non-standard battery packs to the car. These extra parts can add a lot to the PHEVs’ price tags – sometimes thousands of dollars more than the base cost.

The Best Road Trip Cars for Exploring Solo, Sightseeing with Family, and More

By Kym Allison Backer

Jaguar Car Rental

We’re still working out where to safely travel in the immediate future, but what’s certain is that after months of staying close to home, we couldn’t be more ready to make a move—which means we're officially on the hunt for the best road trip cars. With gas prices holding steady, there’s no better time to load up your favorite playlists and hit the road, company optional. We’ve gone ahead and done the research for you, assembling a list of some of the best road trip cars to pick up at your local rental agencies to help ensure a seamless and safe trip, whether you’re traveling with your kids, going solo, or looking for an off-road adventure.

For packing in the whole family

Chrysler pacifica.

It’s only fitting that the brand that first put minivans on American roads is behind the award-winning Chrysler Pacifica (named Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, and Family Car of the Year by Cars.com). The sleek styling of the eight-seater will firmly put to rest any reservations about maintaining cool cred, while the spacious interior’s in-floor access bins and stow-and-go second- and third-row seats allow for a variety of configurations, no matter your family’s size . Opt for a model with all-wheel drive that automatically engages if you hit adverse weather.

The glossy, streamlined fourth-generation A8 is a stunner, from the sporty new grille to the interior’s ambient lighting. Once in motion, check out the drive select system; the comfort setting, which softens the steering and acceleration, will let you smoothly take precious cargo down rough roads. Warning: your kids will compete for the rear seats, thanks to the excess legroom, panoramic sunroof, and futuristic, neatly stowed console that controls all the rear amenities, like heated and massaging seats. Parking sensors and lane departure warning come standard.

Chevy Suburban

Don’t let the outsize proportions scare you off. The newly revamped Chevy Suburban ranks high when it comes to second-row legroom and cargo space, and now has an expanded third row that can comfortably accommodate long-legged teens. Standard safety features include automatic emergency braking, forward collision alert, and multiple cameras (up to nine) for 360-degree exterior views. For added security, there’s also hidden storage so that you can secure your valuables anytime you leave the vehicle. Opt for a model with dual rear screens to keep the kids endlessly entertained.

Mazda 6

The Mazda6 has a quiet cabin that can block out road noise on long drives.

For trekking 2,500 miles across the country

Toyota camry.

The Toyota Camry has consistently ranked as one of the most reliable midsize vehicles for the past three decades, making it one of the best picks for any trip. It offers incredible fuel economy, getting 29 miles per gallon in the city, and 41 miles per gallon on the highway (which also means fewer stops!) and has a notably quiet cabin where you can blast tunes and keep up with directions on the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Pedestrian detection, lane departure, brake assist, and lane tracing assist from Toyota’s Star Safety System also keep the Camry centered in its lane.

Genesis G70

The refined Genesis G70 has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, one of many accolades for this polished, comfortable sedan. It’s a pleasure to sit in the top-notch driver’s seat, with its well-padded diamond quilted Nappa leather. The cockpit feel is enhanced by aluminum accents, a short, stylish gear box, and the G70’s agile and responsive handling, which makes short work of the miles ahead. Added bonus: the trunk can fit multiple carry-ons or larger suitcases, and the rear seat folds for extra cargo space.

The Mazda6 is a good-looking sport sedan with a stylish interior designed for maximum comfort, a necessity when you’re spending days on the road. The Mazda6 gives you a peppy, smooth drive and a quiet cabin that blocks out exterior noise. There are convenient wheel-mounted controls, easy-access sound controls, and a solid navigation system that’s also a breeze to program. Standard features include folding rear seats, blind spot monitoring, automated emergency braking, and low-speed forward-collision warning.

For exploring solo, safely

Toyota rav4.

When you’re on your own, reliability takes on a whole new level of importance. That’s where the RAV4 comes in: after more than 25 years on the road, the model remains a winner for its manageable size, dependable performance, and commendable fuel economy, getting 27 miles per gallon in the city, and 35 miles per gallon on the open road. You’ll appreciate the car's many safety touches, which include interior lights that illuminate as you approach and driver assistance features such as an integrated backup camera, folding and fully reclining rear seats, lane-tracing assist, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Ford Mustang

America’s love affair with the Mustang began over 50 years ago and it’s still going strong. The allure is obvious, from those legendary lines to the sound of the high-powered engine—but what lies at the heart of the Mustang’s enduring popularity is that once you slide into those bucket seats, it’s an unbeatably fun, and fast, ride. Standard models come with a rearview camera, six-speed manual transmission, and a complimentary dose of nostalgia.

Honda Accord

Ten generations in, the Accord has solidified its spot as one of the most durable and nimble vehicles on the road, a winning combination for a swift, problem-free drive. The distinctive sedan’s spacious interior provides ample legroom and comfort for even the tallest of drivers and the stellar fuel economy (30 miles per gallon in the city, and 38 miles per gallon on the highway) make it a no-brainer for any trip. Driver assist technology, including traffic sign recognition and an automatic braking system that kicks in to help prevent collisions, come standard.

Land Rover Autohome Roof Tent

The Land Rover Defender's roof can support up to 600 pounds, perfect for a roof tent.

For navigating the backroads

Land rover defender.

Land Rover has long perfected the marriage of form and function, making the Defender one of the best off-roading vehicles out there. Tackling muddy or rocky ground? The quick turn of a dial will let you select a suitable suspension and traction mode for the terrain you’re on and, if you approach water, the 3D-surround camera and wade-sensing system will gauge the depth and allow you to navigate through up to 35 inches. When parked, the rear seats fold down with the touch of a button, and the roof supports a tent and occupants up to a combined 600 pounds.

Subaru Ascent

The Ascent is Subaru’s largest SUV, and it puts that size to good use with a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds (enough to haul a small trailer). The generously sized cabin seats up to eight passengers, and the rear seats fold flat to haul extra cargo or to pinch hit as a makeshift bed. Traveling with a group? The Ascent’s roof rail capacity of 700 pounds nicely accommodates a sturdy rooftop tent. Standard features include all-wheel drive, driver assist technology, and a rear-seat reminder alert that sounds when anything is left behind as you prepare to exit the vehicle.

Volkswagen Atlas

VW’s seven-seater Atlas has already seen a few changes since its relaunch three years ago. It’s one of the largest crossover SUVs, has unmatched cargo and passenger space, folding second- and third-rows, and roof rails that you can use to secure anything from kayaks to boxes of gear. The Atlas is also capable of towing up to 5,000 pounds, has four adjustable all-wheel drive modes, stability enhancing systems, a hands-free liftgate, and park distance control.

Washington Pass Along the North Cascades Highway

For going greener

Ford fusion hybrid.

This attractive midsize gas-electric hybrid lets you keep track of energy output on customizable dashboard screens. Along with a roomy interior and 10-way power driver seat for maximum comfort, standard features include an eight-inch touchscreen and voice command for easy access to directions and entertainment, blind spot monitoring, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, and a rearview camera.

Toyota Prius

The Prius has spent the last two decades accumulating industry accolades, and it’s still going strong. The gas-electric hatchback comes with stellar stats: consistently top-ranked on safety lists, excellent fuel economy (it averages 50 miles per gallon in the city, and 54 miles per gallon on the highway) and a reliable history. The company has also upped the model’s standard features, which now include a mammoth 11.6-inch screen, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, an integrated backup camera, and a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection. (And you’d be surprised how much you can fit in the trunk.)

Jaguar I-Pace

Be prepared to throw any preconceived notions about “boring” electric vehicles out the window when you encounter Jaguar's I-Pace. In the plush and surprisingly spacious cabin, take a minute to check out the detailed instrument panel, then select dynamic mode for a sporty, full-throttle ride. Before you zoom off, download an app like ChargePoint so that you’ll be able to quickly pinpoint fast-charging stations along your route—though with a 253-mile range, you'll have enough juice to get from, say, Washington D.C. to New York .

10 Best Eco-Friendly Cars With Low Emissions And High Reliability

Eco-friendly, cheap to run, and reliable, these cars are perfect for those who want to lower their carbon footprint without sacrificing reliability.

In the ever-changing landscape of vehicle sales, the eco-warrior has risen to become a dominant force. Once the laughingstock of the salesroom and bought only by people who were perceived to make their own clothes, eco-friendly vehicles now outnumber their gasoline-guzzling muscle car rivals. Once motoring icons, the planet-destroying likes of the 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon 170 , are now motoring outcasts.

To gel with the modern in-crowd, a vehicle needs to sip fuel, be reliable and spit out as little pollution as possible. For some, opting for a pure electric vehicle is the way to go, with the 2023 Kia EV6 being the current hot ticket. But as some people don't have the funds or facilities to accommodate a pure EV, it makes sense to look at alternatives.

For the forward-thinking gearhead who has a social conscience plus values frugality and longevity, these are the 10 best eco-friendly and reliable cars .

10 The Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid Has Low Emissions And High Reliability

Essential Green Driving Tips for Your Eco-Friendly Rental Car Experience

Drive smoothly and avoid rapid acceleration.

Rapid acceleration consumes more fuel and increases emissions. Drive smoothly, accelerate gradually, and maintain a steady speed to conserve fuel and reduce your carbon footprint.

Avoid Idling

Idling your car wastes fuel and contributes to unnecessary emissions. If you anticipate being stationary for more than a minute, turn off the engine. This simple practice can save fuel and reduce pollution.

Plan Efficient Routes

Plan your routes in advance to minimize driving distance and avoid congested areas. Utilize GPS or navigation apps that offer eco-routing options, which prioritize fuel efficiency and shorter travel times.

Carpool or Share Rides

Consider carpooling or ride-sharing with fellow travelers or locals to reduce the number of cars on the road. Sharing rides not only reduces emissions but also allows you to make new connections and share travel experiences.

The more weight your car carries, the more fuel it consumes. Pack light and only bring essential items to reduce the load on your rental car. This will improve fuel efficiency and decrease emissions.

Packing for eco-friendly road trips

Properly Inflate Tires

Keeping your rental car’s tires properly inflated improves fuel efficiency. Underinflated tires increase rolling resistance, leading to higher fuel consumption. Regularly check the tire pressure to ensure optimal performance.

These rides aren’t just slick—they’re kind to Mother Earth, too. Hybrids combine the best of gas engines and electric motors for better fuel efficiency, while electric cars produce zero tailpipe emissions. That’s a win-win for you and the planet.

Worried about where to charge your eco-friendly ride? Chill, the charging infrastructure is growing rapidly, making it simple to power up and hit the road.

Tackling Range Anxiety Head-On

Be the Trendsetter | Encourage the Shift to Greener Cars

Your choice matters! Opting for a hybrid or electric rental not only lessens your carbon footprint but also encourages more people to make the sustainable switch.

So, what are you waiting for? Join the green revolution and make your next trip a model of eco-friendly awesomeness!

What to Know About Fuel Efficiency Ratings in Eco-Friendly Car Rentals

Fuel efficiency ratings play a crucial role in determining the environmental impact of a rental car. Understanding these ratings will help you make an informed choice when selecting a vehicle for your eco-friendly trip.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provides a standardized fuel economy rating for all vehicles, known as miles per gallon (MPG). The higher the MPG, the more fuel-efficient the car is. Let’s delve into the important aspects of fuel efficiency ratings to consider when planning your next eco-friendly trip.

This table provides a quick guide for readers who are looking to make their trips more fuel-efficient and eco-friendly.

The Real-World Impact of Eco-Friendly Car Rentals on Sustainable Travel

To truly understand the impact of eco-friendly car rentals on sustainable travel, let’s explore a real-world case study.

Imagine you are planning a road trip across the country, and you have two options: renting a traditional gasoline-powered car or opting for a hybrid rental. By comparing the emissions and fuel consumption of these two scenarios, we can gain insights into the tangible benefits of eco-friendly car rentals. This case study will shed light on the positive environmental effects of making conscious choices during your travels.

Embarking on a road trip provides an excellent opportunity to make eco-friendly choices. We compared the emissions and fuel consumption between traditional gasoline-powered and hybrid rental cars over a 1,000-mile journey. The gasoline car emitted 0.97 pounds of CO2 per mile, whereas the hybrid only emitted 0.61 pounds, showcasing a 37% reduction in emissions.

The Impact of Eco-Friendly Trips

Let’s talk Cost Savings

Let’s talk Cost Savings with the current gas price at $3.706 per gallon. The hybrid car, with its impressive 50 MPG, needed just 20 gallons for the trip, costing $74.12. On the other hand, the gasoline car, at 25 MPG, consumed 40 gallons, amounting to $148.24. Opting for a hybrid would result in a saving of $74.12.

The Environmental Impact goes beyond just emissions. Hybrid vehicles often incorporate eco-friendly materials, thereby lessening your overall environmental footprint. Moreover, the personal satisfaction of driving an eco-conscious vehicle can’t be overstated.

Sharing your experience on social media platforms can multiply this impact. A single post can inspire your circle to opt for greener travel options. Each share and like amplifies this ripple effect, encouraging a more sustainable future. #carrentalreviews #Eco-FriendlyTrips

Choosing a hybrid rental car reduces emissions and fuel expenses, while inspiring others to make sustainable travel choices.

2023 Kia Carnival Interior

Road Trip Car Characteristics

Passenger space : People turn cranky when they aren't comfortable after hours on the road. There needs to be space for everyone to stretch out.

Cargo space : At the very minimum, you'll be bringing luggage along and maybe also camping gear or tubes for floating the river. Make sure there's space for your gear.

Fuel economy : Stopping for gas on a road trip can get expensive. Fuel efficiency, particularly from hybrid powertrains, can ease the pain of stopping at the pump.

Infotainment : An AM/FM radio is no longer sufficient for most people. An infotainment system that's easy to use while driving and can connect to smartphones is key.

Safety tech : Driving long distances causes fatigue, and fatigue causes accidents. Modern driver-assistance features can help you stay alert and in your lane.

Reliability : No one wants to be the car in the breakdown lane while on their road trip. A good predicted reliability score shows that a particular model has on average been a solid performer over time.

How to Plan a Sustainable Road Trip

<p>It’s no secret that transportation is a significant source of emissions — so how can you go on a road trip and still make it sustainable? Learn more.&nbsp;</p>

Jan. 17 2020, Updated 2:58 p.m. ET

When I was younger, it felt like we lived in the car — excuse me, van. We were a family of four, and still, we drove the heck out of an eight-passenger van. We’d leave for long trips to Pennsylvania (three-and-a-half hours from our home in New York) and Vermont (sometimes five or six hours from New York) and we even drove down to Florida a few times to visit family and you know, hit up the quintessential Orlando theme parks. Now that I’m an adult and an eco-warrior at that, I realize just how many emissions and environmental complications our fun family road trips probably caused.

In fact, the Environmental Protection Agency reports transportation is the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, which get trapped in our atmosphere and in turn, warm the average global temperature . Transportation emissions accounted for 28.9 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions in 2017 and exacerbate the effects of global warming . While the transportation category isn’t made up of solely cars — as fossil fuels for transportation purposes are used for everything from cars and trucks to ships, trains, and planes — that percentage is alarming and there is a lot we can do to change our transportation habits to ensure the reduction of these harmful greenhouse gas emissions.

Road trips can be an exciting and adventurous opportunity to create memories with the people you love and take in sights along the way. While I’m not trying to dilute my very un-sustainable memories of my childhood, I do understand now that a road trip can always be done better — that it can always be done more sustainably. For that to happen, it takes planning.

Last week, I flew to Florida with Chevrolet to try out the new 2020 Chevrolet Bolt EV, a chargeable electric vehicle with an EPA-estimated 259-mile range and more eco-friendly features that change the sustainable road trip game. (For full disclosure, I was invited by Chevrolet, and my travel and accomodations were compensated.)

If you’re thinking about planning a road trip sometime soon, start with an environmentally friendly car and then go from there. Ready to get planning? Keep reading for our top tips on planning a sustainable road trip — and my take on the Chevrolet Bolt EV!

What to Pack on a Sustainable Road Trip

Now that you’ve labeled your road trip “sustainable,” you might feel flustered about what to pack. Don’t be! Pack as you normally would as far as clothes and toiletries (avoiding plastic whenever you can — try those small silicone squeeze bottles for things like shampoo, conditioner, and body wash!).

In addition to those things, you’ll want to pack a tote bag with reusable cutlery, a few reusable napkins, a stainless steel or glass food container (to take leftovers on-the-go), a silicone Stasher bag, a few reusable straws, another small bag for anything you might buy on the way, a reusable jar or cup, and a reusable water bottle.

How to Make the Most of the Mileage on a Sustainable Road Trip

While driving the Chevrolet Bolt EV, for example, you actually allow the car’s electric battery to regenerate while paused at stop signs, waiting at a red light, or even while slowing down to brake. Driving technique is a key ingredient to making the most of your mileage and ultimately, the Bolt EV’s electric battery. Of course, terrain and conditions are also a factor, but it’s important to understand that how you drive goes a long way.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV features unique regenerating features, such as the One-Pedal Driving, which works similarly to a golf cart. Put the car in “Low” mode and your road trip is already all the more sustainable, as you’ll be using significantly less energy. In this mode, gently lift your foot off the pedal to stop. No hitting the brake. As you lift your foot from the pedal, the car’s battery uses less energy to brake, so therefore the 66-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery can regenerate.

Visit Environmental Sites Along the Way that Also Value Sustainability

One of the most exciting parts of going on a road trip is making stops along the way. Whether they’re planned or totally spontaneous, it can be so fun to check out a local attraction you don’t normally get to visit. But if you want to keep that theme of sustainability going, try to incorporate other sustainable and environmentally friendly activities into your road trip.

Going on a road trip with kids? Stop to take a hike. Rent a bike. Visit a farmers market. Show them that nature can be just as fun as a theme park. You’ll make all the memories as a family and walk away without a plastic toy as your child’s souvenir.

Look for farm-to-table restaurants or eateries that value sustainability, local farming and agriculture, and eating plant-based. In Florida with Chevrolet, we stopped at Malibu Farm in Miami to create our own pizzas using sustainably sourced vegetables. Plenty of restaurants champion local, in-season ingredients — you just have to look for the keywords on Yelp.

Babcock Ranch in Florida, pictured here in 2019.

Another stop during our Florida road trip was Babcock Ranch near Naples. Babcock Ranch is the first-ever sustainably built town, completely powered by solar panels. We toured the town, checked out the model homes that use significantly less energy than traditional homes, and even went on a sustainable bike ride — no greenhouse gas emissions involved.

There are plenty of places where you — and your family — can visit and learn about sustainability. Stop at a science center, nature center, farm, ranch, or even a museum and you all leave with a stronger understanding of what’s happening to our planet and how we can help.

How to Plan Sustainable Meals on the Road

If you’re going to rely on eating out during your sustainable road trip, try to find restaurants that are farm-to-table or value sustainability practices. Or, if you’d like to pack a meal with you and some snacks, make sure to pack your lunch and snacks in something like a silicone Stasher bag, glass or stainless-steel container, or a cotton snack bag.

Snack Ideas

Most of these snacks can be bought in bulk , which means without packaging. This way, you can put them right into whichever container you’re bringing on your trip. Snack ideas include loose nuts, dried fruit, fruit, seeds, pretzels, raisins, trail mix, some candies, granola, etc.

You can’t go wrong with the classic road trip option of packing a sandwich. If you can, try to buy bread that is packaged in sustainable paper rather than the plastic stuff. Some bakeries and grocery stores will let you pick your loaf of bread and put it directly into a cotton tote, too.

Now that you’ve got your bread, you’ll need some fixings. Ingredients like lettuce, tomato, onions, avocado, bell peppers, and more can always be found sans packaging. Just throw them into your cotton mesh grocery bags. Other sandwich ingredients like pickles, banana peppers, and condiments can usually be found in glass containers.

My Take on the Chevrolet Bolt EV

The Chevrolet Bolt EV is an electric vehicle with an estimated 259-mile range on a full charge. I drove the Bolt EV from Naples to Miami — a nearly two-and-a-half-hour trip — without having to stop to charge during the drive. Electric vehicles do not emit harmful greenhouse gases into our environment, so looking forward to the future, they are a huge part of the global warming and climate change solution.

The Chevrolet Bolt EV also contains some amazing safety features, so you don’t have to sacrifice your safety for the sake of the environment. With Surround Vision HD cameras all around the car, you have more than just a back-up camera — you’ll get a 360° view of the car as well as a rear view when you back up, a light-up system on the side-view mirrors that indicates when a car is in your blind spot, and the rearview mirror can actually be flipped to an HD camera live feed of what’s behind you. Pretty cool, right?

Now, let’s not forget that you’ll have to stop along the way during your road trip. You won’t be stopping for gas, however. Instead, you’ll be using the Chevrolet Bolt EV’s GPS system to locate electric charging stations along the trip. It’s as easy as plugging in “nearby gas stations” into Waze.

Some electric vehicles are even eligible for a tax credit .
