REVIEW: Ratt – Invasion of Your Privacy (Part Two of The Atlantic Years series)

Part Two of Five

invasion of your privacy tour

Going triple platinum on their debut album , Ratt had a lot of expectations going into a followup.  They resumed working with producer Beau Hill and didn’t change up much in their formula.  The result was a double platinum second record, another sales success.  But what about the tunes?

Lead track “You’re In Love” was chosen as a speedy, sleek, metallic and melodic single.  A step up in songwriting, “You’re In Love” packs power and horny Stephen Pearcy passion.  Wicked solo by Warren DeMartini.  The simple riff/melody combo was all the rodents needed to score a hit and a career highlight.  As an album opener, it revs the engine but it is also the fastest track you’ll get on Invasion of Your Privacy .

A tasty heavy riff opens up “Never Use Love”, a nice chugging album track.  Nothing here in terms of a memorable chorus, so strictly album filler.  Not road tape worthy without a decent chorus.  Great Robbin Crosby solo though.  Fortunately the slick first single, “Lay It Down” comes in for the save.  Take “You’re In Love” and slow it down to a sexy locked groove, and you get “Lay It Down”.  Pearcy was not one for subtlety.  “I know you really want to lay it down,” he beckons, and no points for guessing what “it” is.

Track four, “Give It All”, is a decent album cut, with the hooks and chugging Ratt N’ Roll style riffs that people expected.  A track with single potential, had they released another.  Another pretty good album track, “Closer To My Heart”, slows it down but not quite into ballad territory.  More like a slow dirge to close side one.

The second side opens on “Between the Eyes”, a disjointed tune that needs some tightening up.  Some cool hooks but nothing to tie them together into a song.  “What You Give Is What You Get” boasts a cool, tough little chorus and some quality guitar.  Great tune other than a misfitting pre-chorus.  It has a dark, foreboding vibe that Ratt rarely nail this well.   “Got Me on the Line” is a pretty solid deep cut, typical uptempo Ratt N’ Roll.  The solo in particular smokes.  “You Should Know by Now” is a bit clunky, but you can hear what they were going for.  They were trying for a big pop rock chorus, but they welded it to the wrong song.

Closing on “Dangerous But Worth the Risk”, the album comes to a strong ending.  It chugs along with that Ratt N’ Roll groove that embodies the sound of Motley Crue assimilating all of Hollywood California in a single night.  Though Ratt’s sound is not something as unique as they used to sell it as, it does have a niche.  It rarely squirms out of that niche.  Invasion of Your Privacy does not stray far from the debut , and doesn’t add any new wrinkles.  It’s the next batch of songs and all but equal in strength to the first batch.

Each CD in this box set comes with bonus material from singles, and this time it’s a single edit for “What You Give Is What You Get”.  The guitar solo is sadly trimmed by 20 seconds for the radio, but no problem hearing this cool song twice.

3.5/5 stars

Man scoring these was hard. You’ll see what I mean when we get further. Part of it is that all of these albums are new to me except Cellar.

Some new music discoveries this year like Coney and RATT WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND!

About a quarter star lower than the debut for me (though I would have given that one 4 stars). Solid follow up. Lay It Down is a top 3 Ratt song for me.

I found all of these really hard to rate, star-wise. Either that or Ratt are relatively consistent.

This is not my favorite of theirs. I thought the songs were okay, but nothing as great as the first. I forget my score but may be close to this one. It was too safe and they didn’t push themselves forward at all with this one.

There’s a lot of good cuts on this album. I still reckon that Closer To The Heart is an underrated gem.

I just have a Hits set from these guys, but I do endorse the cover art.

My favorite Ratt album. Have this on vinyl. Have a memory of just keeping on turning the side. Loved this one.

The first side was definitely better than the second in my view. I think they tried too hard to copy their debut album and fell short. The album was good but there was no progression. I say so here: https://80smetalman.wordpress.com/2019/06/06/great-metal-albums-of-1985-ratt-invasion-of-your-privacy/

Read your review. See what u mean. I like What u give and U should know by now.

U saw Ratt with BJ? I saw Ratt with Poison opening. Got both t-shirts. Poison shirt seemed to get a lot more notice. It had that Talk dirty to me line on the back. Got send back home from school while wearing that one.

No wait, it was BJ shirt that got me sent home. This one: https://poshmark.com/listing/Vintage-80s-BON-JOVI-Concert-Tour-T-Shirt-5af880636f8f592ec42655c6

Ah I see, because it says “ass” on the back?

Considering my love of his Arcade releases was weird RATT never did much for these ears but reading through these inspired a revisit and gotta say finding quite a lot to like certainly need delve in some more \m/

Still reading and enjoying Mike thanks ;)

WARDY! Am I ever glad you’re back. I was worried about ya!

HA nah I’m around, well busy and online much less of late but still reading and enjoying whenever I can mate

Awesome! Do you ever manage to catch the live show? 7 am in your neck of the woods….

What live show? I have no idea what you’re talking about sorry LOL!?

Oh man you’ve been missing out! Ever since the start of the pandemic I’ve been taking the talk live every week. Last week was Sean Kelly from Helix, Lee Aaron and Coney Hatch. Amazing show! I do this every week now.

You’re In Love is genius, I struggle after that tbh.

The struggle is real.

Album of the Day

Invasion of your privacy.

invasion of your privacy tour

L.A. glam metal greats Ratt returned to record stores a year after their smash debut with 1985's INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY. Producer Beau Hill is back behind the boards, adding radio/MTV-friendly polish to 10 originals including opener “You're in Love,” “Between the Eyes” and Top 40 hit “Lay It Down.” Driving and catchy with an appealing touch of sleaze, this music is an ideal showcase for Stephen Pearcy's commanding vocals and the twin-axe attack of Robbin Crosby and Warren DeMartini (whose solos here qualify him for guitar god status). INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY was a double-platinum success, and the Atlantic collection is truly a ball for headbangers.

invasion of your privacy tour

RATT in the heyday of a series of intense shocking works. A new masterpiece of the world-shaking “INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY Tour” is now available on a permanent preservation press CD. What is recorded in this work is “September 28, 1985 Detroit performance”. It is the excellent audience recording. For some reason, RATT is hot in the collector world these days. In particular, the famous recordings of “INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY Tour” in the heyday have been excavated one after another, and “MONSTERS OF ROCK 1985 (Shades 1289)” is based on the super-masterpiece “YOKOHAMA 1986 DEFINITIVE MASTER (Zodiac 435)” of the performance in Japan. Masterpieces of ridiculous level such as “HAMMERSMITH ODEON 1986 1ST NIGHT (Shades 1304)” are firing in rapid succession. This work is also such a new excavation master of all seats, and it is the best live album that will be the American edition of the home country, as opposed to the Japanese / British edition so far. Anyway, first of all, the position of the show. Let’s take a look back at the panoramic view of the world tour together with the above masterpieces.

● 1985 ・ January 4: Honolulu performance ・ March 20-27: Japan # 1 (6 performances) << June 13 “INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY” released >> ・ June 18-August 13: North America # 1a (41 performances) ・ August 17: Donington performance ← * MONSTERS OF ROCK 1985 ・ August 20-December 31: North America # 1b (86 performances) ← ★ Coco ★ ● 1986 ・ February 6-28: UK (17 performances) ← * HAMMERSMITH ODEON 1986 ・ April 7-28: Japan # 2 (17 performances) ← * YOKOHAMA 1986 ・ April 30: Anchorage performance << August 9th “DANCING UNDERCOVER” released >> ・ December 4-31: North America # 2 (18 performances)

This is the 1985/1986 RATT. You can see that famous recordings have appeared from all over the world, but the main part of the tour is definitely the home country of America. The US tour is divided into two with MONSTERS OF ROCK, which appeared in a hollow manner, and the Detroit performance of this work is the latter. It was the 23rd performance of “North America # 1b” (By the way, the undercard of the day was BON JOVI in the “7800 ° FAHRENHEIT” era). This work recorded at such a show is a superb document audience that clearly captures the scorching scene. I’m frightened for a moment by the tremendous enthusiasm that blows out as soon as I play it, but when the performance starts with “Dangerous But Worth the Risk”, the clear performance sound cuts through the burning audience and reaches straight. I don’t think it’s a sound board no matter what I make, because I’m so enthusiastic that I feel a sense of crisis beyond the “excitement”, but the core and sharp details without a sense of distance are vivid like a laser beam. So, it can be called a sound board grade. And even if you are enthusiastic, it is not strangely hard to hear (if so, it will not be pressed). In the second song “Give it All”, there are some arguments, and in the third song “Wanted Man”, the screams and screams explode with the force of the wind pressure with the intro, but the song is leading the way. , It is RATT who wins the tug of war of great enthusiasm and clear performance sound. From the time of entering the 4th song “In Your Direction”, the enthusiasm gradually regained calm, and along with that, the extra-thick, close-fitting, and ultra-clear performance sound emerged clearly, and it became a superb recording that completely suppressed everything. It is. Of course, even though it calms down, it doesn’t make the scene flutter, but the way it gets excited changes. Roughly speaking, the enthusiasm converged from the “swell that forgot me” to the “big chorus”. The RATT N’ROLL, which has been thickly strengthened by a choir of 20,000 people gathered at “Joe Louis Arena”, is raging. The clear and scorching sound is drawn with a rich full show that compresses the masterpieces of the great heyday. It is a non-set similar to the masterpieces of “INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY Tour” mentioned above, so let’s organize it here.

● Rat (4 songs) ・ Back for More / Walkin’the Dog / You Think You’re Tough / Sweet Cheater ● Out of the Cellar (4 songs) ・ Wanted Man / In Your Direction / The Morning After / Round and Round ● Invasion of Your Privacy (7 songs) ・ Dangerous But Worth The Risk / Give It All / Never Use Love / Closer To My Heart / You Should Know By Now / Lay It Down / You’re in Love

… And it looks like this. Among the above three works, it is close to the Japanese performance “YOKOHAMA 1986 DEFINITIVE MASTER”, and probably because it has an undercard, “Between The Eyes” and “What You Give Is What You Get” are cut off to make it a more concentrated style. Anyway, it is a new excavation live album that is overwhelmed by the overwhelming clear sound and amazing excitement. Both “MONSTERS OF ROCK 1985” and “YOKOHAMA 1986 DEFINITIVE MASTER” seemed to be “the heyday!” The cheering that spreads far and far does not stop even for a moment, and the enthusiasm like a geyser that pushes higher from the foundation. Even though I knew the common sense of “the representative of LA metal”, I didn’t know its true awesomeness … This work is a new masterpiece of RATT in its prime, but more than that, it is a super masterpiece of the music genre itself called LA metal in the 1980s. It is a rare super-heated live album that lets you experience the “pressure” of the movement in the field with the best sound. Cultural heritage of that era. Experience it with a permanent storage press CD!

★ A powerful audience recording of “September 28, 1985 Detroit performance”. With the finest document recording that vividly captures the scorching scene, the clear performance sound cuts through the burning audience and reaches straight. It’s not mistaken for a sound board because of the enthusiasm that makes you feel a sense of crisis beyond the “excitement”, but the core and sharp details without a sense of distance are line-class. It is a cultural heritage album that is overwhelmed by the concentration and reduction of “RATT”, “OUT OF THE CELLAR” and “INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY” and the immense popularity of the home of America. 特に全盛期“INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY Tour”の名録音が次々に発掘されており、来日公演の超名盤『YOKOHAMA 1986 DEFINITIVE MASTER(Zodiac 435)』を筆答に『MONSTERS OF ROCK 1985(Shades 1289)』『HAMMERSMITH ODEON 1986 1ST NIGHT(Shades 1304)』など、とんでもないレベルの名作が連発しています。

Back for More/Walkin’ the Dog/You Think You’re Tough/Sweet Cheater ●情欲の炎(4曲) ・Wanted Man/In Your Direction/The Morning After/Round and Round ●インヴェイジョン・オブ・ユア・プライヴァシー(7曲) ・Dangerous But Worth The Risk/Give It All/Never Use Love/Closer To My Heart/You Should Know By Now/Lay It Down/You’re in Love

前掲3作の中では日本公演の『YOKOHAMA 1986 DEFINITIVE MASTER』に近く、前座付きだったせいか「Between The Eyes」「What You Give Is What You Get」を削ってさらに濃縮したスタイルです。 『MONSTERS OF ROCK 1985』も『YOKOHAMA 1986 DEFINITIVE MASTER』も「さすが全盛期!」

『RATT』『OUT OF THE CELLAR』『INVASION OF YOUR PRIVACY』の濃縮還元と本場アメリカの絶大な人気に圧倒される文化遺産アルバムです。

With CELLAR producer Beau Hill once again in the studio control room, sparks flew, and the band put together a follow-up just as strong as their initial hit.

The guitar is the high point of this song. The opening riff, for starters, is catchy and sets the mood for the song to be an instant headbanger, and the fills throughout the song are nicely done.
