5 Easy Ways You Can Share Your Journey and Inspire Others to do the Same

by joycelayman | branding , content marketing , relationships | 0 comments

We all know that sharing our journeys can be a powerful way to inspire others, but it’s not always easy to know how to get started. You may feel like your journey isn’t interesting enough, or that you don’t have the time or energy to share it. You may also know what you want to say but don’t have the confidence to put yourself out there.

As a former wallflower in the world of business networking, I get you. It was scary for me in the beginning until I discovered the power of story and how it accelerates the connection between you, your audience, and your ideal clients who can benefit the most.

Your journey is made up of multiple stories so I’m going to start by taking you through the story creation process first.

I learned this process from my speaking coach back in 2007 when I was preparing for the Toastmasters International Speech Competition. Going through this process taught me SO much about the power of story, how to frame it, and most importantly how to share it with others.

Start By Thinking About One Event

When you think about your journey, start with one story – an event that stands out to you. The memory could spark laughter, be inspiring, or even a challenge you overcame. I call it your ‘there to here’ story and it’s the same framework I used to create my TEDx talk. I also used this for the keynotes that I did since there multiple stories in each one.

Sometimes stories come out of the least likely places. One of my favorites was sharing the story of how I met Bob Burg via Twitter. It’s the ‘if you don’t ask the answer is always no’ story. The result was coming out of my wallflower shell and resulted in sharing the stage with Bob a year later. He later endorsed my second book which I am forever grateful for.

Sharing this story during keynotes and company training inspired other wallflowers to step outside of their comfort zone. How do I know this? Through the conversations I had with attendees at the events and the emails they sent me telling their stories. #POWERFUL TIP: Keep a story file. My speaking coach taught me this to make sure I didn’t forget a good story example. In 2007 I used a word document but now I use the notes app on my cellphone and Evernote on my computer.

Don’t Worry About How It’s Going to Sound

Write about what you want to share – don’t worry about how it’s going to sound. This is where the doubt tends to creep in. If you’re introverted that can make it even harder. This is why you start with a story file and think back through memories.

An easy one is to think through why you started your business in the first place. Or if you haven’t quite made that leap then what’s going on now to make you want to make the move. When you share your story, don’t worry about how it’s going to sound. Just start writing and see where the words take you.

You can always go back and revise it later, but getting started is the hardest part. The next step is to write down a few thoughts on paper (in a journal), in a word document, or in my favorite platform EVERNOTE.

You can also record with an app on your phone and have it transcribed through HappyScribe or another online platform for next to nothing! This is the process I used to write a 221-page biz book and went from nothing on paper to fully published in 35 days!

Use a  ‘There to Here’ Framework

When you share the story in a way that is interesting and easy to follow, it will keep readers/listeners engaged. You do this by making sure to focus on the main points. It’s easy to get caught up in the tiny details that we remember – but your audience may get lost in them. You should have the set-up, three to five main points. This will help you stay on track, and make sure that your story is clear and concise.

It’s also important to have a strong ending, so that your audience will remember what you said. I always say there are lessons to be learned in every story.

When you’re done, ask yourself how the experience has changed you, and what you learned from it. This is a great way to wrap up your story, and give your audience something to think about.

TIP: A clear ending with one main call to action will help your audience remember the entire story. If you want another set of eyes before you share your story ask a friend or business associate for feedback before publishing it publicly so you can make any necessary edits

5 Ways to Share Your Story

One story can be shared in multiple ways – repurposing makes sharing your story easy! Start by picking an outlet that feels comfortable to you. This also determines the length of your story.

  • Blog, podcast (yours or someone else’s)
  • Facebook post, live or Instagram story
  • Interview with a local media outlet
  • On the about section of your website
  • In a conversion event – webinar, workshop, etc.

When it comes to sharing your journey, the most important thing is to just start. Don’t worry about how it’s going to sound, or if it’s interesting enough. Just write down your thoughts and see where they take you. You can always go back and revise them later. Sharing your journey can be a powerful way to inspire others, so don’t hesitate to get started today!

If you want to improve your customer experience you need to be able to understand and adapt the customer journey you offer when someone interacts with your organization. Whether their journey is entirely online , offline, or a blend of both, there are multiple journeys a customer might undergo.

Understanding the customer journey in depth helps you identify and take action on customer pain points and repeat what’s working. By doing this, you will improve the overall experience that your customers have, which will have better outcomes for your business.

Outlining the potential customer journeys your audience might go through requires a process called customer journey mapping.

Free Course: Customer journey management & improvement

Creating a customer journey map is the process of forming a visual representation of customers’ processes, needs , and perceptions throughout their interactions and relationship with an organization. It helps you understand the steps customers take – the ones you see, and don’t – when they interact with your business.

It enables you to assess:

  • Insights – from your existing customer journey, how to understand it better
  • Impact – how to optimize budgets and effort for changes we want to make to the customer experiences
  • Issues/opportunities – Diagnose the existing customer journey
  • Innovation – where you might want to completely change the existing customer experience

A customer journey map gives you deeper insight into the customer, so you can go beyond what you already know. Many brands see the customer journey as something that is visible – where the customer interacts with the brand. But in reality, this is not true, and only accounts for a percentage of the entire customer journey. Creating a customer journey map gets you thinking about the aspects of the journey you don’t see, but have equal weight and importance to the entire experience.

When mapping out the customer journey, you are looking for the moments that matter – where there is the greatest emotional load.

If you’re buying a car, then the greatest moment of emotional load is when you go to pick the car up because it’s yours , after picking the color, choosing the model, and waiting for it to be ready.

Ensuring these moments match your customers’ expectations of your product, brand and service teams are key to helping you reach your business goals. But you can only do that by understanding the journey your customers go on in order to get there, what they’re thinking and needing from you at that time. Developing a customer journey map puts you in their shoes so you can understand them better than ever before.

Getting started when creating a customer journey map template doesn’t have to be difficult. However, your customer journey map template will need to cover several elements in order to be effective.

There are several ingredients that make up the anatomy of a customer journey, all of which should be looked at carefully so that you can find out where the customer journey runs smoothly and meets customer needs at that moment in time – and where the experience does not, and needs some improvement.

Understanding their behaviors and attitudes also means you can fix bad experiences more effectively too because you know why you haven’t met your customers’ expectations and what you need to do to make amends. There may be times when things go wrong, but it’s how you adapt and what you do to fix these experiences that separates the best. Knowing how the customer will be feeling makes taking that decisive action much easier.

When exploring and visualizing the customer journey we are assessing:

  • Customer behavior What is your customer trying to do?
  • Customer attitudes What is your customer feeling/saying?
  • The on-stage experience Who/what is your customer directly interacting with? (This includes various channels, such as TV ads or social media)
  • The off-stage experience Who/what needs to be in place but which your customer is NOT directly aware of?

So what could the customer journey map examples look like when starting the process of buying a car?

customer journey steps

Customer journey vs process flow

Understanding customer perspective, behavior, attitudes, and the on-stage and off-stage is essential to successfully create a customer journey map – otherwise, all you have is a process flow. If you just write down the touchpoints where the customer is interacting with your brand, you’re typically missing up to 40% of the entire customer journey.

There is no single customer journey. In fact, there are multiple. The best experiences combine multiple journeys in a seamless way to create a continuous customer lifecycle as outlined below.

customer journey loop

Getting started with customer journey map templates

To begin, start by choosing a journey that you would like to create a customer journey map for and outline the first step that customers will take.

You can use this customer journey map template below to work out the customer behaviors, attitudes, the on-stage and off-stage processes – and the KPIs attached to measuring the success of this experience.

The step-by-step process of mapping the customer journey begins with the buyer persona .

Step 1 – Create a customer persona to test

In order to effectively understand the customer journey, you need to understand the customer – and this is where creating a persona really helps. You may base this around the most common or regular customers, big spend, or new customers you haven’t worked with before. This persona is beyond a marketing segment , but that can be a great place to begin if you’re just starting out on the mapping process for your organization.

What do you include? Start with these characteristics.

  • Family status
  • Professional goals
  • Personal goals

These personas help you gain a deeper understanding of your customers and can be derived from insights and demographic data , or even customer interviews . This works for both B2B and B2C business models, but in B2B especially you’ll have multiple customers for each opportunity so it’s recommended you build out multiple personas.

To begin, start with no more than three personas to keep things simple.

Create a diverse team

When creating a customer journey map, you also need to build out a diverse mapping team to represent the whole business. Include frontline staff , day-to-day management, corporate teams, HR, and business support functions. They will give you vital feedback, advice, and perspectives you hadn’t thought of.

Step 2 – Choose a customer journey for mapping

Select a customer journey map to construct, then build a behavior line. This might be a new customer journey, renewal, or fixing a product issue. You might also choose this based on the most frequent customer journeys taken, or the most profitable.

Step 3 – Work through the mapping process

Ask yourself the following:

  • Who are the people involved in this journey? E.g. if you’re in a car dealership, that might be the customer, the sales rep, and front-of-house staff.
  • What are the processes or the things that happen during this journey?
  • What are the customer attitudes ? What are they feeling at this time? Go beyond excitement or frustration. Bring these feelings to life. This car is my dream come true!
  • What is the moment that matters? Identify the greatest moment of emotional load. The make or break where everything could be good up until that point, but if you get that moment of maximum impact wrong, then all that’s good is forgotten. The best experience brands get this moment right and identifying it is an important first step to achieving that. In that moment, ask yourself what are the things/people/processes involved? Think about this for the whole business – across your product , brand , and service teams.
  • But beyond identifying this moment, you need to establish what your customers’ needs are. What are they getting out of this moment? How do their needs change if this experience goes badly? Knowing the answer to these questions can help you deliver experiences that will resonate , and respond quickly to unforeseen circumstances or issues.
  • And finally, how do you measure how effectively you are meeting customer needs throughout the journey? Set KPIs to put benchmarks in place for your customer journey map and customer experience and track your progress.

Step 4 – Innovate

When you are mapping out your customer journey, brainstorm ideas for how to improve that moment that really matters . These ideas don’t need to be practical, but by putting together a diverse mapping team from around the business you can begin to filter through these ideas.

Then, test it.

Ask yourself: Is it feasible? Is it viable? Is it desirable? Don’t ask can we do it, ask should we do it? Then you can start to differentiate yourself from your competitors.

Step 5 – Measure

Use the customer journey map to decide on your measurement framework.

Who are you measuring? What are you measuring? When on the journey are you measuring it? And why? And finally, what metrics and KPI’s are in place to measure this?

customer journey metrics

Your customer journey map process will require you to use several different data inputs to get an accurate picture of how your customers behave and where you can improve their experience.

A customer journey map is often developed using data gleaned from customer feedback you’ve requested . While this type of market research is useful, your research process needs to be deeper to gain a richer, more accurate understanding of your customer’s behavior.

To create a customer journey map that accurately reflects the truth of customer actions and intentions, you need to take into account both solicited and unsolicited data.

Use solicited data to understand the voice of the customer

Solicited data includes the customer feedback you gain when you conduct research through surveys such as Net Promoter Score (NPS) or ask customers for feedback on social media. This approach can be very useful for understanding your customer’s point of view , rather than just making assumptions about how they think and behave.

However, your target audiences won’t tell you everything about what they plan to do when undergoing their customer journey. Though they might tell you that they’ve had a great experience in a particular part of their customer journey, this type of feedback presents a few issues:

  • You have to know when to ask for feedback : You might already have a customer journey in mind when asking for feedback – but do you know all the routes a customer might take in your customer journey map?
  • It’s a snapshot: When you survey customers, you’ll likely only get insights into their experience at that particular moment about a specific touchpoint
  • It’s what customers say they think/will do, not what they actually think/will do: You’re relying on your customers to accurately reflect their sentiment and intentions in their responses, which isn’t always the case. For your customer journey map to be effective, you need to find the truth
  • Your sample size might be too small : If you’re trying to understand how a relatively niche customer journey is doing, you might find that the number of customers who have not only taken the customer journey but are willing to respond with feedback is very limited. You can’t risk survey fatigue by polling the same audience several times, so your insights are limited
  • You’re only getting part of the picture : You will likely have several types of useful customer data on file, but these are often not considered as part of the process when creating a customer journey design because solicited data takes precedence

You’ll need to infer how customers feel to be able to accurately predict the actions a customer takes. To do so, you’ll need to look at unsolicited data.

Unsolicited data

Unsolicited data covers everything your customers aren’t telling you directly when you ask them and contextual data that you likely already collect on them, such as purchase history. It can be taken from various sources, such as your website and social channels, third-party sites, customer calls, chat transcripts, frontline employee feedback , operational sources, and more.

This type of data is nuanced, but it allows you to establish the truth of your customers’ experience. The ability to gather unsolicited customer feedback from every channel enables you to see more than just what a customer tells you directly. Using real-time feedback gathering and natural language understanding (NLU) models that can detect emotion, intent, and effort, you’ll be able to understand your customers’ actions in a more profound way. Unsolicited data offers you a 100% response rate that better indicates what your customers actually think of each step in their customer journey.

Rather than be limited to a small sample size of customers who respond to surveys, you’ll be able to build an accurate picture of the average customer on each step of the customer journey map by using this richer insight data with your own operational data.

Why using solicited and unsolicited data is important data

With solicited data, you don’t always see why a customer behaves or thinks as they do. For example, a customer might tell you that they would recommend you to a friend or family – but they don’t renew their subscription with you. A customer might be an ideal candidate for a particular journey, but they abandon their basket when prompted to give their personal details. Understanding the why behind customer actions is key for designing a great customer journey, and that’s why both solicited and unsolicited data collection and evaluation are necessary for creating great customer journey maps.

Of course, knowing how customers will actually respond to your customer touchpoints is only part of the process. You may need to develop more than one customer journey map and create sub-audiences for your customer personas to accurately see where you can rectify pain points and improve outcomes. You will need to collect and analyze contextual data across all customer journey touchpoints and develop a highly detailed journey map that can unveil routes your customers might be taking without your knowledge.

Qualtrics’ Experience ID platform can overlay solicited and unsolicited data to provide an all-encompassing picture of your customer journey map, no matter how complex. Creating an effective customer journey map is easier with all your data collated and analyzed together, with actionable insights created automatically.

A customer journey map creates a common understanding for the organization of how a customer interacts during different stages of the customer lifecycle, and the roles and responsibilities of the different teams in charge of fulfilling that experience.

It will also bring an organization together, and foster empathy and collaboration between teams because people will know what is required from everyone in the business to deliver the experiences that customers expect. This will help you to develop a shared sense of ownership of the customer relationship, which ultimately drives a customer-centric culture . With everyone working towards a common goal, communication of what you learn about the customer and the journey they go through is vital in order to drive best practices throughout the organization.

Creating an accurate customer journey map will help your customer service team to focus on more specific issues, rather than handling problems generated by a less-tailored customer journey. Your customer experience will be improved with a customer journey that’s personalized to the specific personas you have generated. You’ll have put yourself in your customer’s shoes and adapted your strategy to reflect your customer’s perspective – which in turn will create more memorable experiences.

Creating a customer journey map will influence your journey analytics across the business. So for example, it will determine what you ask, who you ask, when you ask, why you ask it and how you ask questions in your Voice of the Customer Program .

So when should you use customer journey mapping?

There are four main uses:

  • Assess the current state of your customer journey Understand and diagnose the specific issues in current experiences
  • Understand what the future state of your customer journey should look like Design, redesign and create new experiences
  • Blueprints For implementing change
  • Communication Bringing teams together to train and scale up best practices.

Take stock and take action

To improve the customer journey you need a clear vision of what you want to achieve and you need to make a distinction between the present and the future.

  • What is your customer journey right now?
  • What does the future state of your customer journey look like?

This is why organizations blueprint their customer journey because they can see what works and act accordingly. By understanding your customers’ attitudes and needs at critical times in the journey, you can make amends to better meet them – and develop contingencies to cope when these needs aren’t or can’t be met. For example, during a sudden, unexpected surge in demand.

Orchestrate your customer journey

To offer your customers truly optimized experiences, you’ll need to go further than just creating a customer journey map. You’ll also need to orchestrate journeys using real-time customer behavior to adapt your strategy as your customers make choices. Orchestrating a journey means taking dynamic action towards optimizing your customer’s experience, using real-time customer behavior as informative data.

Improve your employee experience

Use your diverse mapping team to come up with ideas that incorporate experience from all aspects of the business to improve the customer journey – and remember that this has a significant payoff for your employees too. Improving the employee journey – by giving teams the tools to make a difference – can have a positive knock-on effect for the customer and improve their experience in those key moments. This is because employees have the autonomy and motivation in their roles to help their customers, and realize their own potential.

Your customer journey map isn’t just designed to improve the customer experience. Creating an accurate customer journey map can help you to improve your business outcomes.

Being able to link operational data to key touchpoints in a customer journey is transformative for organizations. This is because improving segments of the customer journey will see a direct impact on your business. The Qualtrics Journey Optimizer helps you do just that. By analyzing areas for improvement as outlined by your customer journey map, organizations can take actions that will have maximum benefit for their customers, and the business too.

With Qualtrics CustomerXM , you’ll:

  • Create a common understanding throughout your workforce of how a customer interacts with your organization, and you’ll know the roles and responsibilities of your different teams
  • Develop empathy and collaboration between teams, working together to achieve the same outcome
  • Develop a shared sense of ownership of the customer relationship which ultimately drives a customer-centric culture

MANIFESTATION MANTRAS: WHAT ARE THEY AND HOW DO THEY WORK?

Manifestation Mantras

To understand why we write and speak manifestation mantras, we first need to explore the precise nature of manifestation. What is manifestation? Well, in its simplest terms, manifestation is what happens when we bring something from our desired reality into our physical reality.

What does this mean exactly? Here is an example. If you have a goal of buying a new car by the end of next year and you end up achieving that goal, you can say that you manifested the car. Put another way, manifestation is the outcome of positive action that was initiated by positive thought.

Manifestation isn’t magic or magical thinking. In fact, there is actually a lot of research the supports the power of goal-setting and manifesting. [1] What you put out into the universe is more likely to find its way back to you. That’s the basic law of attraction. With that being said, let’s further explore the science of manifestation and manifestation mantras. Because the more you know about them, the better equipped you’ll be to put them to good use in your own life.

The Science Behind Manifestation Mantras

To understand how manifestation mantras work, let’s go over exactly what a mantra is. By definition, a mantra is a syllable, utterance, or sound. Sound creates and changes vibration, and anywhere you see or feel a vibration, there is usually a sound behind it.

What this means is that our entire existence is a sort of sound, or rather, a complex amalgamation of different sounds. In other words, our world and our lives are made up of mantras of one kind or another.

When you can direct your mantras and use them specifically and intentionally, you can watch them become the key that opens up an entirely new dimension of experience and life within you. [2] Mantras activate a particular type of energy in your body.

What Exactly Are Manifestation Mantras?

Are manifestation mantras the same thing as affirmations? The two are similar but there are some subtle differences. Affirmations usually have highly specific intentions. For example, you may have affirmations that address very specific outcomes, such as amounts of money, relationships, or the type of car you hope to have.

On the other hand, manifestation mantras are usually shorter utterances and they are more focused on matching our desired outcome’s energy. With manifestation mantras, your desired outcome may be unconditional love, abundance, or fulfillment. You can see that they’re much less specific than affirmations and they’re also not as wordy.

Here are some examples of manifestation mantras that you can use during meditation as you focus on the energy of what you are saying.

Now that you have a solid list of powerful manifestation mantras that you can leverage daily, let’s dive in to how they impact us.

How Manifestation Mantras Impact Us

Below, we explain in detail how manifestation mantras can impact your life and health.

1. Saying Manifestation Mantras May Stimulate Our Endocrine Systems.

When you chant mantras, your tongue is pressing against the palate inside your mouth. This stimulates the thalamus, hypothalamus, and pituitary. In the palate in your mouth, there are 84 specific meridian points. Specifically, there are 20 meridian points in the soft palate and 64 meridian points in the hard palate.

When your hypothalamus emanates a vibration, it directs that pituitary gland’s actions and also governs your endocrine systems. Also, as this process happens, hormones and chemicals are released throughout the body and onward to the brain, resulting in healing bodily effects.

The tongue stimulates the pituitary gland and hits the various meridian points. The reason this is so powerful is that the pituitary gland forms when we are in utero from cells that originate in the roof of the mouth. These cells rise to the brain. Because of this, pressing your tongue against the roof of your mouth stimulates the pituitary gland.

2. When We Say Manifestation Mantras, We Are More Focused.

It’s well-documented that when we chant mantras while meditating, we are more able to focus. Chanting mantras distracts our minds from the random thoughts that we all experience every day, allowing us to anchor our minds in concentration.

3. Saying Mantras Effectively Helps Us Release Emotions.

Do you ever feel the need to release emotions? Chanting manifestations is an effective way to let go of whatever emotions are controlling you. Essentially, when you are saying manifestation mantras, you are impacting your heart and throat chakras and releasing the negative emotions through self-expression.

4. Our Vibration Aligns When We Say Manifestation Mantras, Creating Awareness.

Because mantras are spoken aloud, they create vibrations. Repeating manifestation mantras direct our words, feelings, actions, and thoughts to impact our consciousness. Every sound has a different vibration and different mantras will have a different effect. Because sounds affect our molecular structure, mantras have the power to be extremely transformative.

To understand this fully, think for a moment about how various sounds affect your life. Some music has the power to change your mood, and loud noises or yelling affect our moods in a negative way. When you say manifestation mantras with intention, you’re exercising some control over the sounds that affect your life.

5. Our Vibrations Become Better Adjusted When We Say Manifestation Mantras.

The Law of Attraction says that we attract that which we seek and put into the universe. If you’re vibrating good things such as love, you will begin to see good things everywhere you look.

The stronger your focus, the better your results.

6. Saying Manifestation Mantras and Changing Our Vibration Can Help Us Overcome Our Karma.

Do you want to alter your Karma? You can start doing this by changing your vibration. If you’re a sensitive person, you will more fully experience the positive effects of manifestation mantras.

Benefits of Chanting Manifestation Mantras

In life, habits become patterns, and thoughts become words. When words become actions, you can effectively experience the power of manifestation mantras. When you repeat manifestation mantras, you can find liberation from the ingrained patterns that are holding you back from your full potential.

With that being said, here are a handful of supporting mantra resources you can try, if you’re looking for a good place to start your manifestation journey:

  • Motivational Mantras
  • Common Mantras
  • Monday Mantras
  • Prosperity Mantras
  • Business Mantras

So, leverage this resource whenever you need a good reminder about the power of manifesting. But most importantly, give some manifestation mantras a try and see what happens in your life. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Member Journey 101: How to Improve Your Member Experience (+ Free Template)

When it comes to retaining and engaging your members, optimizing your member experience is everything. But when it comes to how to make it better, it can be difficult to know where to start!

You probably already have a wealth of data from member surveys or engagement stats. That’s where a member journey comes in. Tracking your member journey lets you:

  • Break down every step in the membership process, from recruitment to renewal
  • Identify what is or isn’t working, by tying data directly to each stage
  • Highlight what tactics or programs are really driving value against key performance indicators (KPIs)

Did that event really engage your members the way you wanted it to? Does your annual renewal messaging make a difference? Are you looking for new members in the right places? These are all important questions a member journey can help you answer.

In this guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know about member journeys—AND well as how to create your own member journey map.

This guide will cover:

  • What is a member journey?
  • Why is understanding your member journey important?
  • What KPIs are important at each stage?
  • What is a member journey map?
  • 6 Benefits of mapping the journey of your members
  • Your first step: creating member personas
  • 5 Key member journey stages

What is a member journey.

A member journey is your member’s experience with your organization.

It covers every interaction from the first touchpoint to membership renewal. They might be different depending on your organization or member type (like a new member journey or a tenured member journey).

The most common member journey stages are:

  • Initial Interaction/Consideration – Members finding, evaluating and joining your organization.
  • Onboarding – Integrating and introducing a new member into your organization.
  • Engagement – The first 90 days for new members, and ongoing relationships with existing members.
  • Help/Troubleshooting – Members hitting roadblocks and needing help.
  • Review/Renewal – Members (new or old) review experience and decide if they want to stay or go.

Later in this guide, we’ll dig deeper into what those member journey stages mean. We’ll also cover what investigating them will look like for you—and key questions you can ask yourself.

Why is Understanding Your Member Journey Important?

A member journey can help you figure out your successes and shortcomings in your member experience so you can begin to make improvements. With this information, you can boost member retention and member engagement . Plus, you can start to focus on getting the most return on your investment (ROI) on your offerings. You can break down what you’re doing at each stage, and measure success against that stage’s key performance indicators (KPIs) like new members, engagement metrics, etc.

When your member experience resonates with existing members, that means the potential to widen your membership to new audiences. When your members love your organization, they become evangelists and will tell others, bringing in like-minded people in.

What KPIs are Important at Each Stage?

Depending on the stage your member is in their journey, there will be different key performance indicators (KPIs), you may want to look out for.

Here’s our breakdown of some examples of what that might look like for you and your organization:

Initial Interaction/Consideration KPIs

Website traffic (for membership information page, about us, etc)

Click-through rate for “Join” CTA and other relevant CTAs

Open rate and click-through rate for emails after first interaction

What is a Member Journey Map?

A member journey map is a visual representation of your member journey. It allows you to map out strategies and tactics, and measure your successes. With a member journey map, you’ll be able to see if one stage is strong and another is weak. You’ll also be able to see growth or decline in any given area, and shift your tactics accordingly.

Your organization is made up of a lot of different kinds of members (such as a new member or tenured one). So it’s a good idea to create more than one member journey map so you can have a full view of your entire member experience.

6 Benefits of Mapping the Journey of Your Members

Mapping your member journey comes with a lot of perks that can help your organization with some important wins. Here are the 6 core benefits of creating a member journey map:

1. Improving Member Experience

Your member journey map can show here you’re falling short in your experience, and what’s already working. Use these learnings to make improvements like changing your membership model or switching up member benefits.

For example, say your last event attracted a lot of new member interest. You’re going to want to make a note of that, and find out why. Then you can replicate that event (and the experience!) to keep up those member acquisition stats.

2. Making Interactions More Personal

Personalization makes members feel like they matter. It can make a difference in converting a new member to a lifetime one. Identify where you’re falling short and introduce elements like:

  • Personalized emails
  • Welcome swag packages
  • Content exclusive to certain member tiers.

For example, over email, marketers see a 20% increase in sales revenue when they personalize their emails plus a 26% increase in email open rate . As you can see, personalization is definitely something worth investing in!

3. Figuring Out How Often to Contact Members

This is all about making sure there’s never a point of radio silence, so your members feel like they’re a part of your organization. When your members feel like they’re part of a community, they’re more likely to engage with your events or contribute (like telling other people about your organization). Your member journey can show you if you’re contacting members too often or not enough! Look at interaction points like member events, email newsletters, mentorship programs, and more. You want to make sure that you’re keeping in touch at a good cadence, but also at the right moment. In other words, are you contacting them at the right time (too early/too late)? Are you contacting them in the best way (email vs phone)?

4. Giving Your Members What They Want

Your members will want different things from your organization at different points in time depending on their member type. Evaluate your points of interaction and how they can attract, nurture, and retain your members. At every stage of their experience, make sure you understand the needs of every member type at your organization. This way you can know how you are truly fulfilling those needs and leading members to the next step of their journey. For example, a new member’s needs may be feeling welcomed and connecting with other new members.

5. Making Sure Your Journey Makes Sense

As we’ve covered earlier, you want to make sure your member needs match what your member is actually getting at every stage of their journey. Look at your member journey and points of communication for areas of mismatch. Does it make sense? Is it natural? For example, are you telling potential new members about membership tiers too early or too late? Examine where you’ve seen members drop off and see if it’s because of a member journey logic mismatch.

6. Helping You Figure Out Your Priorities

Work smart, not hard! You’ve got enough on your plate, and you’re going to want quality over quantity.

After building our your member journey map and sorting through everything you know about your members, you’re going to be able to prioritize ! Focus in on on what you think will give you the most return for your investment.

For example, you may find out that your members think your website is a nightmare to navigate—and they can’t find any of the great programming you’re offering! That’s a roadblock to providing value to your members, and could signal that it’s time to invest in a platform that prioritizes user experience (UX). For businesses , making a website design more user-friendly can boost website conversion rates up to 400%.

Your First Step: Creating Member Personas

Before you start your member journey mapping, you’ll need to know how many member maps to make. That’s where member personas come in.

With member personas, you’ll also be able to look at your member journey from their point of view and approach your decision making and solutions from a more empathetic perspective .

What is a Member Persona?

A member persona is a semi-fictional representation of the different types of members in your organization. It’s based on research and data about your current members and who you see as your ideal member.

Making Your Member Personas

Getting started is easier than you think. You can pull data from your member satisfaction survey or your member management software to help you create clear member personas.

You can look at data like:

  • Reasons for joining
  • First interaction points
  • What events have been popular
  • Membership tier
  • Date of renewal
  • Status of membership (active or inactive and why)
  • Volunteer involvement

Your member persona can include information such as:

  • Member Tier/Join Date
  • Member Goals
  • Obstacles or Barriers

Ultimately, don’t get bogged down by creating a lot of member personas. You just need to create enough so that you can get a good understanding of your members and how to serve them better.

Still not sure where to go from here? Start with a new member (charting their first year) and a seasoned member!

5 Key Member Journey Stage

Understanding the path your members go on involves understanding essential stages that apply to most organizations. Your member journey may look different, so treat this as a guideline. Feel free to add or change stages accordingly.

Itching to start mapping out your member journey now? We’ve got your free copy of the member journey map template here. Just fill in the form at the top of this blog post!

1. Initial interaction/Consideration

How do people find you? What makes them join?

This stage is all about members evaluating your organization and deciding whether it’s a fit. It directly impacts your member acquisition numbers.

Questions to ask yourself:

  • What resources are at their disposal (pamphlets, information package, “How to Join” page on website, etc)?
  • How does your organization benefit a prospective member?
  • What do your first and follow up interactions look like?
  • How easy does your website make it for them to join? (mobile-friendly, clear JOIN button, etc)
  • What benefits are you offering?
  • Are your membership tiers competitively priced?

2. Onboarding

How good does your organization’s proverbial welcome mat look like? Here, you’ll want to review how you welcome new members, and if it’s really doing its job well. During this stage, members should feel like they’re being integrated into your organization and should have opportunities to meet other members. All in all, they should feel like they belong!

  • How quickly does member onboarding begin?
  • What does member onboarding look like? Is it planned against a calendar?
  • How many emails do you send new members?
  • Do you have a welcome package?
  • How do you introduce and integrate new members to the community?
  • Are you improving your member onboarding year over year?

3. Engagement (1st 90 days)

When it comes to new members specifically, the first 90 days are key. Figure out what opportunities are at their disposal during this time and how easy it is for them to find them and get the most out of them.

  • Do you have a buddy system or mentorship programs ?
  • How do you nurture and develop member relationships?
  • What perks and resources do you provide?
  • What makes new members loyal to your organization?
  • Is it easy for a new member to find the programs/benefits/perks you offer?
  • Is there a sense of community built into your organization?
  • Do you have a job board or membership directory that helps members find opportunities?

4. Help/Troubleshooting

Inevitably, at some point, your members are going to hit a roadblock. This stage covers how they get over that hump and what resources you have at their disposal to help them.

  • How do they get help?
  • Are there resources at their disposal?
  • How do you address their questions? How quickly?

5. Review/Renewal

At this point, your member (whether they’re new or old), decides if they want to stay or if they want to go. The major focus for you here is: how your journey makes it a no-brainer for them to stay.

  • What makes your member renew?
  • Are you explaining your renewal benefits to your members?
  • Where are you seeing drop off?
  • Are your members feeling engaged on a regular basis?
  • Are you sending out renewal reminders?
  • Are you using a multi-channel approach? If not, are you focusing on a channel that works best for your members? (ie phone vs email).
  • What do your members want to see more of?
  • Are you running regular member surveys to identify their needs?
  • Are you sending a thank you email to members who renew?
  • Do you have renewal incentives or discounts?

Self-Employment 101: A Guide to Starting the Process

A re you considering taking the path of entrepreneurship but feeling unsure where to begin? Well, you’re in the right place! Our guide below will go over some tips for starting the process of your self-employment journey and joining the 16 million Americans who identify as self-employed.

Keep reading to learn more about being self-employed.

Identify Your Passions and Interests

When you start a business, you have the chance to turn what you’re passionate about into a profitable venture. First, you will need to take some time to do some self-reflection. Think about what activities you enjoy and what you’re truly passionate about.

Also, think about the problems you enjoy solving, either for yourself or others. Most businesses emerge from addressing certain challenges. So, if there’s a problem you’re passionate about solving, this could be your starting point for your business venture.

Once you have some things in mind, it’s time to conduct some market research. You want to explore niches and industries that already exist. The goal is to find any gaps where your idea can fit in and help others.

Create a Business Plan

Creating a business plan is a critical step in starting any business. Briefly describe your business idea, its unique value proposition, and the problem it solves. Outline your short and long-term objectives and what you aim to achieve with the business.

You also want to define the purpose and mission of your business. Think about the legal structure of your business. The most common choices are sole proprietorship, LLC, and partnership.

It’s also important to analyze the industry your business will operate in and its current trends. Define your target audience and their specific needs in your business plan. You will also have to do a competitor analysis, where you evaluate who your competitors are along with their strengths and weaknesses.

Your business plan will need a section where you write all the details about your product or service. Highlight what makes your business product unique and different from anything else out there.

There should also be a section for your implementation plan. Create a timeline for launching your business where you include key milestones. Write down the tasks and responsibilities for you to implement the plan.

Keep in mind that the business plan you create will continue to evolve as you get started. You want to revisit this and adjust the plan as needed. Think of this plan as your roadmap that will help with day-to-day operations and even securing funding.

Legal and Practical Considerations

Once you have a business name and have decided on which legal structure is best, you will need to register your business. Depending on where you live, there are certain local, state, and federal authorities you will need to follow to stay legit. This is also where you have to see if your industry or location requires certain licenses or permits to operate legally.

For example, if your business deals with food, public health, or hazardous materials, you might need specific health and safety permits. If your business impacts the environment, then you will more than likely need environmental permits.

You can’t forget about Uncle Sam because self-employment taxes are a must to avoid any fines or legal issues in the future. You will have to keep track of all your income and expenses. It’s also a smart idea to estimate quarterly taxes because it will help you not fall behind when tax season comes around.

We recommend setting up an accounting system to help you manage all the money that comes in and out for business purposes. If you don’t have the time or are not good with finances, then you might want to consider hiring an accountant. There’s also the option to use accounting software that is linked to your bank account that does most of the sorting for you.

If you have a brand name, logo, or product that you feel people can easily use as their own, you might want to consider protecting it through copyrights and trademarks. Also, if you deal with sensitive information, then you want to use confidentiality agreements to help safeguard your data.

Marketing and Branding

The foundation of your business image is your brand identity. Part of your brand identity is your business logo, name, typography, and color scheme. The more consistent you are with these elements, the more you will create a strong and memorable presence where people start to associate your colors with your business.

For example, most people think of Target when they see red circles or Starbucks when they see a certain shade of green. The reason is that these brands have been very consistent with their color scheme throughout the years.

When you are working on your marketing, you want to identify what your unique selling proposition (USP) is. These are the things that set your business apart from the competition. When you highlight your own USP, it will help customers understand why they choose your products or services instead of your competitors.

You have to understand your target audience so that you can speak to them through your marketing. During your research, you have to identify where your target audience likes to spend their time. The goal is to show up where they are hanging out so that you can reach them.

This includes speaking to your target audience through social media platforms. This is a great place to meet and speak to your target audience.

Now You’re Familiar With Starting the Process

Taking on the task of becoming your own boss can be both exciting and challenging at the same time. Sometimes you will find yourself working a lot more than a 40-hour work week, but it’s satisfying because you are doing it for your own company instead of growing someone else’s company. As you can see, starting the process doesn’t have to be complicated.

Navigating ramadan: fostering understanding and support at work.

LONDON, ENGLAND - MAY 14: Friday prayers are observed at the Baitul Futuh Mosque on May 14, 2021 in ... [+] London, England. Eid Al-Fitr has marked the end of Ramadan, the monthlong dawn-to-dusk fast that concluded yesterday. (Photo by Dan Kitwood/Getty Images)

The daily calls for prayer over the loudspeakers of a dozen mosques and shorter school days are childhood memories marking Ramadan. As with so many traditions, workplace and social culture diminishes even the most important celebrations - not out of ill will. Often from a lack of awareness.

In a few days, Muslims around the world embark on a spiritual journey marked by fasting, prayer, and reflection. Ramadan is a time that brings communities together, fosters personal growth, and strengthens bonds.

This year, I spoke to colleagues navigating the balance between their spiritual commitments and the realities of their work environments, some commonly held misconceptions about this time, how they want to be supported at work, and the ways in which the ongoing conflict in Gaza casts a shadow over this sacred period.

More Than A Fast

Nearly everyone I spoke with has had interactions of surprise, even disbelief from coworkers on the topic of the food and waterless fast observed by Muslims.

Nada Alwarid, a product manager, noted that while fasting is common in Eastern religions, such as Hinduism and Buddhism, it is practiced far less often in the West. She often draws the connection to intermittent fasting, to help her colleagues understand how fasting works.

Despite the attention on the fast, for many Muslim professionals, Ramadan is far more than a ritualistic abstention from food and drink; it is a time for reflection, study and community. Sabreen Akhter, a pediatric emergency physician, and self-described humanitarian and parent, emphasizes that despite the physical challenges, Ramadan is awaited with eagerness for the spiritual "reset" it offers. It's a time to step back from the worldly hustle and immerse oneself in contemplation and communal harmony.

Yet, Akhter notes a palpable silence around Ramadan in professional settings, a void where meaningful discussions about faith and spirituality could otherwise thrive. “What happens in work spaces, in an effort to be inclusive or secular, is that we don't talk about things related to faith, belief, practice, or spirituality,” she says. “I would say that most Muslims, if the question is asked with curiosity and in good faith, would be happy to talk about what Ramadan means to us” while advocating for a culture of openness, encouraging questions and conversations about Ramadan.

Echoing Akhter and Alwarid, Saosan S, a biotech professional, confronts common misconceptions head-on, addressing the oversimplification of fasting to mere hunger or an unconventional diet strategy; it is rooted in empathy and self-discipline, transcends the superficial perceptions of it being a health risk or an extreme act of self-denial. She says, “it’s really undermining and frankly, a microaggression, for colleagues who don't know you well personally to make that kind of joke.”

Everyone I spoke with highlighted the intentional and reflective nature of fasting and solidarity with those in need. In fact, the practice of zakat , charitable work and feeding those in need, is inseparable from Ramadan.

Tauseef Rahman, a partner at Mercer, and Sarah Davis, an engineer in the renewable energy industry, further expanded on the diversity of Ramadan observances among the global Muslim populace, pointing out the need for basic awareness and respect for the holy month's practices in professional environments. They share personal experiences where a lack of understanding about Ramadan's fundamentals sometimes leads to awkward interactions or missed opportunities for meaningful engagement.

Sarah Karim, a social impact consultant, says, “a myth or misconception that I'd like to correct is the notion that Muslims may not work during Ramadan - if anything, due to the hyper-vigilance on self-discipline as an ethos of this month, many Muslims will restructure their day to aim for the highest of productivity, and that looks different for different people: for some, it means clocking in right after the pre-Dawn meal and wrapping up earlier in the workday; for others, it means taking a short siesta to be more productive.”

Fostering Supportive Work Environments

The professionals share valuable insights on how colleagues and employers can support Muslim employees during Ramadan. Simple acts of awareness, such as recognizing the significance of the month and the potential need for flexible schedules or breaks for prayer, can significantly enhance the work experience for fasting Muslims.

Davis appreciates when coworkers and employers initiate conversations about Ramadan, offering a platform to share its significance and how it might impact work routines. Such dialogues not only dispel misconceptions but also foster a culture of empathy and mutual respect. Karim echoes this sentiment, saying, “Ramadan is generally a very festive time for Muslims - no matter one's cultural background - so many love talking about it, and generally, appreciate being able to do so.”

If you work with Muslim colleagues directly or make decisions that impact Muslim community members, students, and other stakeholders, it is important to note that Ramadan happens at a different time each year. This means that you can’t rely on recurring calendar notifications to be aware of the start and end dates. Davis gave me additional insight on the timing of this holy month, “Ramadan goes by the Islamic lunar calendar, which falls roughly 10 days earlier every year in the Gregorian calendar. The sighting of the new crescent moon signifies the start and end of the month of Ramadan, which could last between 29 to 30 days”.

Shujaat Ahmad, a leader at LinkedIn and founder of Belong & Lead, says, “This month is not only significant for muslims who observe the practice of fasting but also for the world of talent, particularly if you're building a global inclusive talent-first organization that delivers products and services for customers globally. It is observed by the majority within the Muslim population that represents 1/4th of the world population. The same population also represents the youngest workforce segment and not only just people like me in regular jobs but also celebrities, including those who represent us at the world stage.”

The following are tips I gathered from the interviewees on strategies for fostering a safe, dignified and inclusive environment for Muslim colleagues and community at-large, especially given they might be the only ones on a team.

Accommodate Flexible Working Hours

Akhter says flexibility is key. “I work in an ER where we are obviously on a 24 hour schedule, so, depending on my shift, I will need a break at specific times to eat a pre-dawn or post-sunset meal and to pray,” she says.

Recognize that fasting from dawn until dusk can be physically taxing. Offering flexible work schedules or the option to work from home can help Muslim colleagues manage their energy levels more effectively, especially during the longer days. This advance stands out especially in parts of the U.S., such as the Pacific Northwest, where the sun is out for 16 hours in the summertime.

Create a Quiet Space for Prayer

One way to for non-Muslims to ally, is by advocating for a quiet space. Saosan says, “if there is no wellness room, this is also the time I think it makes sense to make a push for one, and support from non-Muslim colleagues would go far.”

Employers should set aside a quiet, private area where Muslim employees can perform their prayers undisturbed. Prayer times vary and can often fall within working hours, so having a dedicated space will be greatly appreciated.

Respect their Fasting

Understand that your Muslim colleagues are abstaining from food and drink during daylight hours, however, they don’t need their colleagues to avoid eating in front of them. Davis noted, “out of respect, some colleagues have felt it necessary to refrain from eating or drinking in my presence while I'm fasting. But most Muslims wouldn’t see this as disrespectful. This is not something they should feel uncomfortable about.”

That said, do not assume that all Muslims will observe Ramadan the same way. There are reasons why Muslims may not fast (but may still choose to), such as travel, or health reasons.

Be Mindful of Meeting and Event Timing

Try to schedule meetings and work events outside of prayer times and iftar (the evening meal for breaking the fast). This consideration ensures that fasting employees can fully participate without conflict.

Ramadan Amidst the Gaza Crisis

The ongoing crisis in Gaza casts a long shadow over Ramadan, intertwining the solemnity of the holy month with a backdrop of conflict and human suffering.

Akhter reframes the situation in Gaza not as a war but as a manifestation of prolonged injustice against Palestinians, stressing the collective empathy and prayers directed towards Palestine during Ramadan. This shared concern for Gaza has deepend community among Muslims worldwide, albeit under a cloud of sorrow and solidarity.

Saosan referenced the headline for returning Israeli hostages and events in the West Bank, saying, “the fact that Ramadan is being used as a deadline for more death and destruction is despicable. The idea that the (very) relative safety of Palestinians in the Occupied West Bank is being threatened by closing access to Al-Aqsa during Ramadan is awful.” She and others noted the daily impact of the crisis, compounded by a culture where this conversation is not welcome in most workplaces.

For Davis, with direct familial ties to Gaza, the disparities between her ability to perform spiritual practices in comfort and the dire conditions faced by her family in Gaza fill her with a heightened sense of gratitude, humility, and a keen awareness of the broader struggles within the Muslim community. She says, “this year’s Ramadan will be particularly painful for my family, shadowed by incredibly increasing desperation and famine endured by millions of people being starved in Gaza right now. Current events hit so close to home for many Palestinian Americans, and I wish employers recognize the distress some of their employees may be going through.”

Everyone I spoke with sits with the heaviness of this moment.

Many are speaking up for the first time. Alwarid noted, “we come from places that are used to colonialism, and horrible regimes that have conditioned us to be afraid and not speak truth to power. We show up in schools, community and other spaces, but without bringing our full identity. It’s not sitting well with me that kids are starving in Gaza.”

In addition to the experience of grief, many I spoke with referenced a sharp rise in Islamophobia and hate incidents, reminiscent of the years following 9/11. Karim says, “directly as a result of what is happening in Gaza, there has been a significant increase in Islamophobia in the U.S., according to CAIR-WA. This has made some Muslims question how proudly they want to identify publicly as Muslim.”

As our colleagues approach Ramadan, there is a deep desire for empathy, awareness, and open dialogue about both Ramadan and the situation in Gaza within professional and broader societal contexts. They underscore the importance of understanding the multifaceted significance of Ramadan, respecting the diversity of its observance, and acknowledging the profound impact of global conflicts on the personal and collective experiences of Muslims.
