The 10 Best Caribbean Sunsets Spots For Perfect View [2022]

best Caribbean sunsets spots | Most romantic Caribbean Sunsets

The Caribbean islands are well-known for their sunshine, and for good reason. Is there anything more daydream-worthy, more expressive of languor and relaxation, than images of sugary white Caribbean beaches, dappled palms, and glistening turquoise lagoons?

Best Caribbean Sunsets spots aren’t quite as well-known. They should, however. Those beautiful lengths of sand and sea (at least the western-facing ones) are even more beautiful with the setting sun, with Easter egg-colored clouds floating overhead. Especially when you have someone with whom you can share them.

However, romance in the Caribbean does not always have to imply seclusion. It’s difficult not to spend a magical evening at Rick’s Café in Jamaica, for example, where you may linger on the cliffside terrace for grilled fish and Tropitinis before dancing to live reggae music as the sun sets. The same may be said about a gathering of island residents atop Shirley Heights, Antigua’s tallest point, with best Caribbean sunsets spots across sweeping Caribbean beaches and moored yachts.

Of course, if you bring the right partner, any of these locations can be the perfect backdrop for romance. That, however, is not up to the islands; it is up to you.

There’s nothing more blissful than watching the sunset in the Caribbean. We’d put together a list of where to find the top 10 best Caribbean sunsets spots.

We're all looking at the same sunset, but we all have our own experiences with them.

The sun’s rays bend and wind round the white marble dome, bathing the stuccoed walls, minarets and garden in a soft pink and orange haze.

Consider taking a day tour from Agra to experience both, the majestic sunrise as well as the romantic sunset at Taj Mahal. Or are you planning to visit other places in India as well? Our local experts can help organise not only your Taj Mahal tours, but trips all over the country.

The 12 Best Places to See the Sunset Around the World

If these stunning sunset destinations don't inspire an impromptu vacation, we don't know what will.

The best thing about sunsets is that you're never going to see two that are completely alike. To celebrate those differences, aim to spend as many evenings as possible in the world's greatest places to catch a sunset.

Watch from an island in the South Pacific as the sun drops into the ocean, enjoy daylight turning to dusk from the red rocks of the desert, take in the cotton candy skies from Malibu, or stand on a rocky outcropping as the sun illuminates a centuries-old temple. Wherever you travel in the world — and no matter what your daily itinerary or budget may be — you can always take advantage of the free show that plays out every night. If you're looking for some inspiration for your next sunset-spotting adventure, here are 12 of the best places to watch the sunset around the world.

Shi Shi Beach, Washington

Head to the far northwest corner of the Olympic Peninsula to visit one of Washington State’s most beautiful beaches. You'll need to bring your hiking gear, since getting to Shi Shi requires a trek through the fir-filled forest and down a rocky trail that leads from a cliff edge down to the Pacific Ocean. Once you've made it to the shore, though, you'll be rewarded with unspoiled sands lined by tide pools and driftwood stands. Set up camp on the beach to watch the sunset behind the stunning sea stacks and rocky arches.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Whether you’re standing with your feet in the sand at Barra da Tijuca or sipping a caipirinha on Leblon’s golden shores, there are many ways to enjoy a Rio de Janeiro sunset. Locals looking for a romantic rendezvous, though, usually head to Arpoador — a small peninsula that sits between Ipanema and Copacabana and juts out into the ocean. Arpoador’s geography allows for stunning views in all directions, making it the perfect spot to watch the sun dip into the Atlantic.

Malibu, California

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

For the quintessential California sunset experience, head straight to Malibu . Point Dume State Beach offers unparalleled views of the Pacific, Malibu’s famed bluffs, and, if you’re lucky, dolphins playing in the warm waters. Point Dume is a great place to watch the sunset, but if you'd rather hit two beaches in one trip, spend your daylight hours here before heading to the nearby El Matador State Beach to watch the sun go down. El Matador's unique rock formations make the dazzling sunset views even more dramatic.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Getty Images/ArtherNG

If you’re looking to snap a few dramatic sunset photos, head to Angkor Wat in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Each night as the sun drops low in the sky, it lights up the outlines of this centuries-old temple complex, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1992. A new airport opened a few miles from the site in late 2023, so this awe-inspiring destination is now easier to reach than ever.

Big Island, Hawaii

As the westernmost state in the U.S., Hawaii is perfectly placed for gorgeous sunsets. Head to Kailua Bay on the Big Island to watch the sun drop into the ocean against a backdrop of dark, volcanic rocks, or drive up the coast to Hapuna Beach State Park for a sunset view silhouetted against one of the state's best white-sand beaches . No matter where you go, bring a picnic to enjoy as the sun’s rays turn the sky and water into an orange-and-pink light show.

Uyuni Salt Flats, Bolivia

There’s nothing like an endless stretch of desert to add drama to a view. Bolivia’s 4,000-square-mile Uyuni Salt Flats are a particularly good place to catch a desert sunset, since their reflective white surfaces mirror the endless blue sky. When the sun starts to slowly descend into the distant horizon, these encrusted salt fields reflect the sun’s rays, transforming the landscape into an otherworldly plane. Be warned, though: when the sun goes down, the temperature drops dramatically.

Key West, Florida

Enjoying the sunset is a nightly celebration in Key West. Locals and tourists descend on Mallory Square Dock to toast the sun as it dips into the Gulf of Mexico. What started out as a casual ritual has turned into a party with food carts selling everything from Key Lime treats to conch fritters while musical acts fill the air with their tunes and artisans do a bustling trade in local arts and crafts. The backdrop takes center stage when the sun paints the sky in a dazzling array of pink and orange.

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

There’s no bad place to view the sunset in Bora Bora, but you’ll make the memory of a lifetime if you can watch the sun dip low into the crystal clear water from a hammock on the private deck of your over-water bungalow. The Four Seasons Bora Bora is one of the best beach hotels in the world, and it's a top choice for honeymooners or anyone looking for a romantic getaway. Take in the sunset over Mount Otemanu while you’re sipping tropical drinks in your private plunge pool watching blacktip reef sharks, unicornfish, and peacock damselfish swim by.

Uluru, Australia

The massive rock formation known as Uluru undergoes a dramatic transformation each night when the sun sets over the Australian outback. The rock cuts a striking silhouette across the sky as the sun paints it orange, deep red, burnt umber, and ochre, before it turns black under the cover of night. Hike to the top of one of the surrounding dunes dunes for a stunning view of Uluru and the nearby domed rocks of Kata Tjuta .

Sedona, Arizona

Watching the sunset can be a near-spiritual experience amid the raw beauty of Sedona, where the desert meets the mountains. Sedona is known for its famous red rock buttes, and the sun’s setting rays make the vibrant colors of the landscape glow against the deepening blue of the desert sky. To maximize the experience, spend the day hiking up to Red Rock Crossing near the Crescent Moon Ranch and stick around for sunset along the creek. For an easier adventure, drive to Airport Mesa to watch the sun disappear behind Bell Rock, Cathedral Rock, and Courthouse Butte.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

If you’ve always dreamed of photographing the unmistakable silhouette of a giraffe illuminated by the sun, head to Tanzania. This African nation has worked to protect its wildlife populations and is now home to rhinos, cheetahs, lions, elephants, zebras, and those photogenic giraffes that roam the Serengeti Plain. Take a safari at sunset to watch as waves of heat and the slow descent of the sun turn the landscape gold. If you’re lucky, a giraffe will pause by a baobab tree at just the right moment.

The Azores, Portugal

The lovely islands of the Azores sit in a nearly empty stretch of the Atlantic Ocean that boasts unimpeded views of the region's brilliant nightly sunsets. Situated roughly 1,000 miles west of continental Europe, this autonomous region of Portugal offers endless opportunities for soaking up the last rays of the sun. Stand on the rocky coast of São Miguel — the Azores' largest island — to catch the final hours of daylight, or drive out to Sete Cidades to watch the sun drop into the azure blue crater lakes. Alternatively, visit the UNESCO-recognized port city of Angra do Heroísmo on the island Terceira, where you can toast the sunfall while sipping champagne on the shoreline.

Ehukai Pillbox Hike Trail

The Ehukai Pillbox Trail offers a short and popular hike with stunning sunset views from the top (one of the best sunset hikes in Oahu and, hence, the hike is also called the Sunset Pillbox Hike ).

The Ehukai Pillbox Trail is named after the pillboxes along the hike , which are World War II-era concrete bunkers that offer an intriguing glimpse into Oahu’s history, while also serving as perfect vantage points for capturing panoramic views.

The trailhead is located near the Sunset Elementary School in the north shore area of Oahu. The trail begins with a short walk through a residential area before leading you into the lush vegetation, immersing you in the island’s natural beauty.

Beautiful North Shore sunset, Oahu

The Ehukai Pillbox Hike is a relatively short hike that spans approximately 1.6 miles round trip, but with a moderate difficulty level, since the hike includes some steep inclines and uneven terrain.

It caters to hikers of various skill levels and remains manageable for most individuals, including families with older children.

As you ascend along the trail, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the North Shore coastline and the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The towering palm trees and vibrant tropical foliage provide a picturesque backdrop, immersing you in the island’s natural splendor.

Keep an eye out for native bird species and the occasional glimpse of the ocean’s turquoise waters, as you make your way to the pillboxes.

The first pillbox provides a fantastic perspective of the surrounding landscape, but the real treat awaits at the second pillbox.

Best Sunset Hikes in Oahu: FAQ

Where is the best place to watch the sunset on oahu.

The best place to watch the sunset on Oahu is hands-down the Sunset Beach ! Located on North Shore, roughly 40 miles from Honolulu, Sunset Beach is aptly named for its spectacular sunsets!

sunset trip tropical

Should you hike Diamond Head at sunrise or sunset?

You should hike Diamond Head at sunrise, if you are interested in seeing sunrise or sunset . The reason is simple: the park closes at 6:00 pm, and you may not be able to stay till sunset. Most winter months you should be able to see the sunrise.

Hiking Gear Checklist

Many of Hawaii’s hikes are demanding, make sure you are well equipped and well prepared. Here’s what we typically take with us:

  • Water Bottle : I hate plastic bottles, and with opaque bladders you can’t see if it is moldy inside. We use this Hydro Flask water bottle – light, stainless steel, wide mouth (you can add ice), with double-wall vacuum insulation (greatly refreshing for hikes in summer). You can also get it with a Flex Straw Lid !
  • Hiking Shoes : My preferred hiking shoes are the medium range Merrell Moab 3 Waterproof Hiking Shoe ( men’s , women’s , men’s mid ), great for Hawaii’s trails through mud and streams. My wife loves her high-end Salomon X Ultra 4 GTX Hiking shoes ( men’s , women’s ), also waterproof.
  • Sunscreen : Hawaii’s sun can be harsh. Avoid sunburn with sunscreen compliant with Hawaii’s 104 Reef Act. The Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Spray , moisturizing with Vitamin E, is our go-to when we travel to Hawaii. Apply liberally and regularly!
  • Trekking Poles : Great for hikes that involve climbing, both going uphill and downhill, and on trails that are wet, muddy and slippery! Improve your footing with this collapsible, high-end Black Diamond Trail Cork Trekking Poles , available for men and women .
  • Headlamp : Planning a sunrise or sunset hike? Hiking in the dark is no fun, especially on many of Hawaii’s rainforest or ridge hikes. We love these two headlamps: the budget Black Diamond Spot 400 Headlamp and the premium Petzl Actik Core Headlamp , with many features.

Beautiful Memories of Oahu Sunsets

Oahu, Hawaii, is a treasure trove of enchanting sunset hikes and perfect places to watch the sun paint the sky with its golden hues.

From the sandy shores of Ala Moana Beach Park and Waikiki Beach to the panoramic vistas of Tantalus Lookout and the rugged beauty of China Walls, each location offers a unique perspective on nature’s masterpiece.

Honolulu (Waikiki in particular) offers a large number of hotels and resorts, along with shopping and dining options. Most visitors to Oahu choose to base in Honolulu at least for a part of their stay.

While many of the large chains have a presence if you are looking to use your memberships, Honolulu also has several unique boutiques to consider.

Our faves include Halekulani for a splurge stay, the Lotus Honolulu for views of Diamond Head, and The Laylow for its awesome location.

Want more room to spread out or looking to stay elsewhere on Oahu? You will find VRBO listings all over the island!

13 Most Beautiful Places To Watch The Sunset In The World, According To Our Travel Experts

My mother was always a big fan of sunsets. “Look at that gorgeous sunset!” she’d exclaim. “Big deal, the sun goes down every day,” I’d mumble as I rolled my eyes, unimpressed in true teenager fashion. Well, I turned into my mother, as we are all wont to do. The other day I even caught the phrase, “Look at that giant crape myrtle,” escape my mouth, and I knew the transformation was complete. I even buy rose-colored sunglasses to enhance the sunset, which is how the most ordinary evenings looked extraordinary to her.

From the violet crowns of Texas to sunsets over Kentucky Lake here in my backyard, I now enjoy sunsets just as much as mom. I’ve even had the pleasure of experiencing Grecian sunsets, which a couple of our writers below can attest are the best. When seeking the most beautiful sunsets in the world, we went to the experts: TravelAwaits contributors.

Our writers know the best spots to watch the sun go down. We asked TravelAwaits writers to describe the most stunning sunsets they’ve ever witnessed, from amazing orange and pink to purple-hued twilight. Here’s where you can find their favorite sunset views.

Sunset Maui Wailea Beach Fairmont Kea Lani Maui

1. Maui, Hawaii

Wailea beach.

When Arizona-based newspaper reporter, freelance travel writer, and travel blogger Cindy Barks thinks of sunsets, she thinks of Maui . She refers to Hawaii’s tropical Valley Isle as “a veritable sunset machine.” Barks says, “When I met my son and daughter-in-law in Maui in October 2019 for a weeklong stay, the sunsets ( and sunrises ) were outstanding wherever we happened to be. Whether we were having a cocktail at the Hotel Wailea or spending the evening in the forested area near Haiku, the sunsets did not disappoint.”

“Although it’s difficult to pick just one, my favorite sunset turned out to be the one we took in from the lanai in our Wailea Beach hotel, the Fairmont Kea Lani. We watched in awe as the orange globe dipped toward the Pacific Ocean, with vertical bright beams appearing amidst the clouds,” she describes. “The great company and wonderful surroundings probably helped, but for me, that sunset stands out among all others.”

Santorini sunset in the Greek Isles on a catamaran cruise

2. Santorini, Greece

A retired elementary school teacher, Jeanine Consoli is a freelance travel writer, photographer, and foodie. She describes her favorite sunset in the Greek Isles on a catamaran cruise in Santorini last month.

“This was a delayed COVID celebration for our daughters’ graduation from college and a family trip. Probably not the last, but it would be difficult going forward. With jobs and commitments, the four of us would find it hard to get time to travel like this again, and we cherished the opportunity. We spent the late afternoon sailing around the beaches, snorkeling, and admiring the volcanic landmass from the sea. As we sailed around the caldera, the actual crater of the ancient volcano, to the city at the very end, Oia, nothing blocked our view of the setting sun. The wide-open Aegean Sea spread out as the bright orange ball began to slowly dip into the deep azure water as the orange, purple, and blues spread out across the open sky. We all cheered and clapped at the sun dipped into the water and hugged tightly, savoring the beauty and the incredible moment,” says Consoli, who says she will cherish the memory forever.

bright orange sunset over the Pacific on the beach in Bandon, Oregon

3. Bandon, Oregon

Louisa Rogers is a self-described writer, leadership coach, trainer, ex-pat, hiker, cook, and paddleboarder. She and her husband Barry discovered the sleepy town of Bandon while bicycling down the Oregon coast in the early ’80s. “We were so charmed by this tiny hippie village, located about halfway down the coast, that after a week of hard-core camping, we splurged and stayed in a hostel,” Rogers explains. “Since then, Bandon has grown enormously, with many developments and a famous golf course with what are considered the best links outside Scotland.”

Bandon is also home to Circles in the Sand , which Rogers describes as “a labyrinth in the sand designed by artist Denny Dyke, who first created one in 2011 for his own walking meditation. Since then it has grown to become a popular community experience.”

“The heart of Bandon is still a funky village, where you can walk on the beach, stroll on the Old Town boardwalk, eat clam chowder, visit art galleries, and buy souvenirs,” according to Rogers, who returns annually to meet up with nearby family. “Last month, after we walked on the beach, admired rock formations, and paddled on the Coquille River, we enjoyed my cousin’s pasta in our van. We capped off the evening by watching this sunset,” says Rogers.

Northeast Kansas sunset: old barn with field of flaxen wheat in the foreground

4. Northeast Kansas

While sunsets observed from white sand beaches or seen as the sun slips behind majestic mountains are regularly cited as some of the most beautiful, Midwesterner Sage Scott admittedly lives pretty far from either of these landforms. As a single mother of four, the Kansas City -based travel blogger writes for people who have wanderlust and a real life.

Scott thinks that “some of the most beautiful sunsets are when the big blue Kansas sky slowly turns a golden orange as the sun slips behind the horizon in the Sunflower State. And the sunset is even more beautiful when there is an old barn or field of flaxen wheat in the foreground.”

“During my travels, I have witnessed some truly spectacular sunsets. I’ve watched the sun slip behind the Pacific Ocean from Kekaha Beach in Kauai, paint a brilliant backdrop behind the gnarly trees in Joshua Tree National Park , and turn the mountains in Sedona the most brilliant shade of red,” Scott reflects. “But as we Kansans are constantly reminded by the endless Wizard of Oz jokes tossed our way, there’s no place like home.”

St. Lucia sunset from a catamaran

5. St. Lucia

The most glorious sunset Christine Chagaris ever witnessed was back in 2010 during an island catamaran cruise on a visit to Sandals Grande St. Lucien resort. The Caribbean island of Saint Lucia makes for a romantic getaway, whether you’re looking to elope or celebrate an empty nest . Taking a catamaran is just one of the many shore excursions available.

As their group sailed the crystal clear waters on a balmy, early evening, Chagaris describes “the sun setting amid a faintly pink-hued sky and pillow-like clouds in the distance.” Happy to have her camera ready, Chagaris says the image she captured evokes “that blissful feeling one gets when all is right with the world and everyday worries just fall away. Just looking at it puts me there again.”

stunning sunset over the South China Seas

6. The South China Seas

Raised on stories of the high seas by her Captain father, Rebecca Hall decided to see what all the fuss was about for herself. In the summer of 2013, the Girl Gone Greek author took a 31-day voyage from Athens, Greece to Hong Kong aboard a container ship. “Yes, container ships do occasionally take passengers and I was the only one onboard this 27 manned crew,” Hall explains. “We traversed the Suez Canal, the Red Sea , sailed through the Arabian Gulf, and then the South China Seas, stopping off at various points.”

“There were many sunsets to be marveled at on that trip,” she reflects. “Looking out for the rare light phenomenon of refraction (when the sun hits the horizon and a green light bounces off). However, my favorite was as we drifted for a few days in the South China Seas, awaiting instructions to travel onwards to HKG. With the cloud formation, I feel this is so atmospheric and summarizes that despite hard work, why life at sea is so beautiful.”

Purple and pink sunset in Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz Island in The Galápagos, Ecuador

7. Galápagos, Ecuador

Puerto ayora, santa cruz island.

The best sunset former Emmy Award-winning television newscast producer Erika Ebsworth-Goold has ever seen took place in the Galapagos . She and her husband opted to stay in Puerto Ayora. With 12,000 residents, it is the chain’s most populous town.

“I can’t say enough about the biodiversity of the islands,” remarks Ebsworth-Goold. “It was a bit like visiting the land of the lost, as we watched giant tortoises ramble across the countryside and marveled at the underwater ecosystem on each of our snorkel trips. The remote island chain has long been protected in an effort to keep it as pristine as possible, and a fact certainly reflected in the sky that evening.” After a long day of snorkeling off the coast of Santa Cruz Island, Ebsworth-Goold snapped the photo above on their last evening on the walk back from dinner. “Yes, it’s in heart of Puerto Ayora. But those colors? You can’t find them anywhere else on earth,” she surmises.

Black and white photograph of inside Alcatraz. Fiery orange sunset over San Francisco Bay can be seen through window.

8. San Francisco Bay, California

Alcatraz island.

Award-winning writer Vanessa Chiasson is aware that San Francisco’s Alcatraz Island isn’t usually associated with beauty. “But there’s remarkable scenery if you know where to look,” Chiasson opines. “The buildings of this once-notorious prison are surrounded by beautiful gardens, some of which were started by prisoners decades ago.” According to Chiasson, “In addition to the usual tours of the property, there are even periodic garden tours led by docents!”

“Inside, things are decidedly grimmer,” Chiasson recalls, “until you notice a glimpse of the brilliant sunset through the windows.” Dubbed “The Rock,” Alcatraz has a storied history. Al Capone was once an inmate, as were conscientious objectors during WWI, often under brutal conditions. “I couldn’t help but think what this glimpse of yellow, orange, pink, and vermillion would have meant to them,” reflects Chiasson. “Seeing the sun start to set by the Golden Gate Bridge on the boat ride to Alcatraz was beautiful, but catching a glimpse of it from inside was much more poignant and memorable.”

Gorgeous sunset over the Aegean sea in Mykonos, Greece

9. Mykonos, Greece

As we’ve already established, the Greek Isles are home to some stellar sunsets, and Mykonos is no exception. Melody Pittman and her daughter Taylor Hardy write about luxury travel, culture, and food on their blogs Travel the South and Wherever I May Roam . “The best sunsets I’ve laid eyes on were the evenings in Mykonos, Greece,” Pittman affirms.

“Every day of our 11-day Greece vacation was magnificent, but there is just something magical about Mykonos,” Pittman observes. “It’s romantic and dreamy, yet worldly and sophisticated, and the sunsets are a daily function, just like eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner.” She describes Mykonos sunsets as “almost tangible — like you could almost touch it in the night sky.” Rooftop and restaurant patios offer the best sunset seats money can buy, Pittman advises. “It seemed like everywhere we were, people just stood and watched when it was time for the sun to set. Time stood still. We all just absorbed the wondrous day’s ending together.”

Fiery orange sunset over the Pacific in Long Beach, Washington

10. Long Beach, Washington

Stretching for 28 miles, Long Beach is the longest sandy beach on the West Coast. As writer Jo-Anne Bowen describes in her article Discover Washington’s Coastal Hidden Gem: The Long Beach Peninsula , the area boasts miles of sandy beaches, bird watching, historic homes, kite flying, and historic lighthouses, and more. This under-the-radar destination is perfect for a family vacation , fall camping , or both.

Bowen’s best sunset happened to be in her home base of the Pacific Northwest. “The clouds seemed to be on fire with the rays of the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean,” she recalls. “Team this setting with the feel of sand beneath my toes, the soft roar of the ocean surf, and the beautiful fall weather and you have the most beautiful sunset I have ever seen.”

sunset seen from a boutique hotel Kuşadası, Turkey as a woman swims in the infinity pool

11. Kuşadası, Turkey

Authors , entrepreneurs, and world travelers Diana Laskaris and Sue Reddel are a package deal, so it’s no surprise that they explored Turkey together. “When we took an extended visit to several areas of Turkey, we had the opportunity to see many lovely natural areas, places filled with important antiquities, and busy metropolitan cities as well,” the duo recaps.

“Turkey is a huge country, but our favorite spot to watch the sunset is a beach town along the coast called Kuşadası,” the pair declares. “People visiting the ancient ruins and historic amphitheater at Ephesus often pass through this beautiful seaside community that hugs the western Aegean. “But the sunset we saw from our small hotel in a quiet corner of Kuşadası was breathtaking and memorable.”

“Visitors often discover Kuşadası when passing through by land to visit the nearby ruins or as a stop on a cruise line,” according to Laskaris and Reddel. “But locals know it as one of the gems of the Aegean, and many have summer homes there. A swim in the pool of our boutique hotel at sunset was as peaceful and refreshing as it was unforgettable. Watching a golden Kuşadası sunset over the sea was a highlight of our Turkish adventure.”

Fiery orange and purple Texan sunset. Photo taken near Walnut Springs, TX.

12. Walnut Springs, Texas

Last fall, Texan travel writer and photographer Janie Pace was fortunate enough to capture the most beautiful sunset she’d ever seen from her cabin just west of Walnut Springs, about an hour and a half south of Fort Worth . “The sunset painted the sky with a rainbow of purples, flaming oranges, yellows, and golds like I have never seen before,” Pace relays. “I have photographed a number of sunsets since then, but this one is at the top of the list.”

sunset over the water in Menemsha, Massachusetts

13. Menemsha, Massachusetts

Located off the coast of Massachusetts on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, Menemsha is a small fishing village where tourists and locals flock to watch the sun dip into Vineyard Sound each evening. TravelAwaits V.P., Missy Glassmaker, says the sunsets are made even more spectacular by the fresh seafood you’re able to devour while watching. “Bring a beach blanket and a bottle of wine, and prepare to enjoy all the lobster, chowder, steamers, mussels, and more from the fish markets that are just steps from the beach.” Parking is extremely limited, so be sure to arrive early and stroll through a few nearby shops or just relax on the beach while you wait.

Pro Tip: If you wait to order your seafood until you arrive in Menemsha for sunset you may be out of luck. Call  Larsen’s Fish Market  or  Menemsha Fish Market  early in the day and put in your order so it’s ready for when you arrive.

Best Caribbean Resorts to Watch the Sunset

  • Google Plus

Sundown brings romance, intimate settings and quiet moments at these charming resorts

After a full day of sand and sun, there’s nothing like cooling off and chilling out with cocktail in hand while watching a colorful Caribbean sunset. As the light fades and evening breezes arrive, you can stroll the beaches, where gentle waves lap the sand. Then, after stretching your legs and refreshing that drink, you can settle in to the perfect spot around the pool or up on your private terrace to watch nature’s light show unfold in the western sky. Here are four of our absolute favorite spots to enjoy the Caribbean at sundown.

Trident Hotel, Jamaica

The Trident Hotel sits on the northeast corner of Jamaica, just 7 miles from the sleepy and balmy town of Port Antonio. The area is still off the beaten path, even for Jamaica. Here, nature takes center stage with jungle-like foliage edging the beaches and immersing Trident in a green canopy of privacy.

Trident Hotel Jamaica

Each seaside villa at Jamaica’s Trident Hotel includes a private pool and an open-air terrace that provides big views of sea and sky. Photo: Trident Hotel

Port Antonia was once the stomping ground of society figures and movie stars like Errol Flynn. The resort acknowledges this history at Mike’s Super Club, which is a cabaret lounge giving a nod to the calypso bop era of the 1950’s Caribbean. Today, the exclusive yet laid-back vibe of the hotel shines through in the chic decor, which includes serendipitous accents like the ceramic sheep by the pool. The property is small, with just 13 villas ranging from studio to two-bedroom, all with private pools, outdoor baths and private terraces ideal for sharing a crimson sunset with your companion.

Carlisle Bay, Antigua

Afternoon tea signals the beginning of day’s end at Carlisle Bay. While many guests are still relaxing in chaises lining the beach, others take tea on their private balcony or by the pool. Quiet settles in as children take naps, boats are anchored and kayaks pulled shore. This is a favorite time for an early evening stroll on the crescent of beach, and for choosing a venue to enjoy the sunset to come.

Carlisle Bay Sunset Antigua

The pier at Antigua’s Carlisle Bay resort is often the site of sunset yoga sessions, and later in the evening provides a romantic setting for candlelight dinners. Photo: Debbie Snow

As refreshing evening breezes come off the bay, the resort’s pier transforms into a yoga platform for a sunset session. Later, it will be framed in candlelight for romantic dinners. Ashore, the bar at waterfront Indigo Restaurant is a favorite, as is the beachside Coconut Palms, where you can keep your toes in the sand. Or, should you be seeking a more private viewing, each of the resort’s 82 suites provides private ocean-facing terraces or patios, where the warm wood tones of walls and shutters are lit by the last rays of the setting sun.

Boucan by Hotel Chocolat, St. Lucia

Nature lovers consider the Boucan to be a little slice of heaven on earth. The boutique resort sits in the midst of the St. Lucia rainforest, on the island’s oldest cocoa plantation, the 140-acre Rabot Estate. The property’s 14 rooms are decorated in a blend of West Indian charm and contemporary chic.

Boucan St Lucia

Nature takes center stage at St. Lucia’s Boucan resort, where the setting sun signals the start of nature’s nightly symphony of bird calls, chirping crickets and singing frogs. Photo: Boucan

After a day of hiking or taking in a chocolate-making tour, you’ll want to head down to the 50-foot long infinity pool for sunset. Lined with black quartz, the pool mirrors the rainforest ambience, and images of the Pitons engulf as you float in the cool waters, with cocktail by your side. As the sun sets behind the craggy edges of the majestic Pitons, the evening rings in a cacophony of sounds. Birds, frogs and crickets transport you into the cool mountain air of night.

Half Moon, Jamaica

The perfect half-moon crescent of aptly named Sunset Beach serves up some of the most spectacular sunsets in Jamaica, and guests at the Half Moon resort have a front row seat for the nightly show. The Half Moon traces its roots to 1954, when several families built winter cottages for family and friends to enjoy. Today, the founding families still visit and the resort has become a home away for the Royal family as well as luminaries like Paul Newman and Jackie Kennedy.

Half Moon Jamaica

A solitary oceanside palapa at Jamaica’s Half Moon resort provides a tranquil and private setting to enjoy sunset views to the accompaniment of gently lapping waves. Photo: Debbie Snow

Over the years, the enclave grew into a 400-acre, self-contained village that includes a collection of cottages, villas and hotel suites, along with an 18-hole golf course, equestrian center, tennis courts, two miles of private beach, a nature preserve and several restaurants that serve up sunset views. The Seagrape Terrace is a favorite, but guests can also opt to stroll the shores and settle into a beachside chaise or palapa to watch the sky transition from pink to orange, red and ultimately a rich violet that signals the arrival of the night.

Best Places to Watch the Sunset in Waikiki

Here are some of the best places to capture the beautiful sunset in Waikiki! You’ll find plenty of spots, so you can easily head to another if one is too crowded for you. Try to watch from a few different places each night of your trip to see which one is your favorite.

1. Waikiki Beach

Of course, the sunset on Waikiki Beach is truly amazing; it is one of the best spots you’ll find on the island.

With it being two miles long, there are eight main sections of Waikiki Beach, with seven of them giving unique sunset views.

Duke Kahanamoku Beach

Kahanamoku Beach is located right outside the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Here you will find calm, beautiful, clear waters, along with soft white sand. There is also a man-made lagoon that is very nice as well.

As you watch the sunset here, you will see it from the beach, all the way to Diamond Head. It is so beautiful from this location.

Fort Derussy

This section of Waikiki Beach is not as developed as most of the other areas, meaning it is usually a lot less crowded. There is more shade here, and it even has a few bars and a volleyball court to enjoy while you wait for the sunset.

Image of a purple and orange sunset behind a volleyball net at Fort Derussy beach park in Waikiki

Fort Derussy is a great place to take a nice walk on the beach as you bask in the beauty of the sunset. Or, you can enjoy a nice drink with this beautiful backdrop.

This is one of the only areas in Waikiki Beach that has plenty of grass and picnic tables.  So grab takeout from a Waikiki restaurant and enjoy dinner with a view!

Royal Hawaiian Beach

The Royal Hawaiian Beach is part of the heart of Waikiki Beach. This is usually where you will take a catamaran ride out on the ocean, and it is very busy. It begins right outside the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and is the start of the hotel strip.

If you want to catch a beautiful sunset here, be sure to come early to get a good spot. This is the area that usually is very crowded. If you want to go out on the ocean in a canoe to watch the sunset, this is where you will head out as well.

Prince Kuhio Beach

Prince Kuhio Beach is another one of the best spots to watch the sunset at Waikiki Beach. It is another popular section of the beach and is full of tourists. Because there are two walls built around the beach here, it is a great place to swim and enjoy nice, relaxing waters.

If you want to watch a Waikiki Beach sunset, be sure to head out before it gets too crowded. Because it is right in the middle, you will get a gorgeous view of the blues, purples, and pinks that fill the sky at night.

Kapiolani Beach

After all the hotels, you will find Kapiolani Beach. It is less busy than the previous two and is another great place to watch a beautiful sunset at night. Here you will find the Waikiki Wall, which is always fun to sit on while you watch the sunset. It offers a great view unlike any other.

Image of sunset at Kapiolani Beach in Waikiki

This is the area of Waikiki Beach that has a screen and plenty of live performances. Check and see if there will be live shows during your trip, and watch the sunset while you sing and dance along to the Hawaiian music!

Sans Souci Beach

Sans Souci Beach is the best place to snorkel in Waikiki. Snorkel out on the ocean in the evening and watch the sunset unfold underwater with the fishes.

Sometimes the tide is high, so there is not much beach to it, so you might want to check before heading over there. If it is, just keep walking along the shore until you find more sand at the other spots along Waikiki Beach.

Kaimana Beach

At Kaimana Beach, you will find more coral reefs to snorkel at and enjoy all the tropical fishes. There are a few hotels, but not much is around here, so if you want to eat and drink while watching the sunset, you will have to bring your own!

With this beach, you get a whole west side view of the sunset at Waikiki Beach, and it is quite beautiful. It is also a very wide area with tons of sand to relax on while you take stunning pictures of the sunset.

2. Sunset Dinner Cruise

The Sunset Dinner Cruise will show you another truly magical Waikiki sunset while eating an amazing dinner. Nothing beats watching the sunset across the ocean while being on the ocean itself!

While there are many Oahu sunset cruises , this Waikiki Beach sunset cruise takes you along Waikiki Beach all the way to Diamond Head and back.

Watch the sunset while eating a romantic dinner with your spouse during your honeymoon or vacation. It is one of the most romantic places to eat on Oahu.  Check the latest rates and availability .

3. Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park

For another view of the sunset in Waikiki, head to Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park. This is not the best park to swim at, but many surfers love it. You might see some while you watch the sunset!

Kuilei Cliffs Beach Park is located close to Diamond Head, only a few minutes away from Waikiki Beach. What makes this a great location for watching a gorgeous Waikiki Beach sunset is that it has multiple lookout locations, so you can clearly see everything.

One of the best lookouts is the Amelia Earhart Memorial. It was built to honor her as she was the first one to fly solo from Hawaii to North America. It is a great place to go and see a beautiful sunset close to Waikiki.

Whenever we travel to Hawaii, we almost always book a photo shoot with Flytographer. They are super easy, affordable, AND it guarantees that I’ll have more than just selfies. You can get $25 off if you book through this link or use the code HAWAIITRAVEL.

4. Manu Kai Catamaran Waikiki Sunset Cruise

For this Waikiki sunset cruise, you will set sail and enjoy some nice cocktails, beers, and drinks while taking in the gorgeous sunset. On this Waikiki sunset catamaran cruise, you will get three free beers of mai tai cocktails and unlimited soda or water.

This cruise is different as it has only drinks and is more upbeat while you enjoy the sunset. There is music and dancing, and it is just full of fun times!  Check the latest rates and availability .

5. Magic Island

Another one of the best Waikiki Beach sunsets is at Magic Island. This is actually a man-made island with a lagoon in the middle and is located right next to Waikiki Beach. It is part of the huge Ala Moana Beach Park and is the perfect place to watch the sunset over Waikiki.

Image of the sunset at Magic Island in Waikiki Oahu with palm trees

You can enjoy the sunset while relaxing on the sand or in the water, or you can sit on the picnic tables spread throughout the grassy areas of the park.

6. Tantalus Lookout

For a completely unique view of the sunset at Waikiki Beach, head to the Tantalus Lookout, located at Puu Ualakaa State Wayside. Take a drive up 15 minutes from Waikiki for an absolutely breathtaking view of a Hawaiian sunset.

Image of the sunset from Tantalus Lookout on Oahu overlooking Honolulu and Waikiki skylines

When you arrive, you will find a huge lawn; you could easily pack a picnic and eat dinner while you watch the sky light up with gorgeous colors. You will get a panoramic view of all of Waikiki as you will go up a very steep hill. The best part is that it doesn’t require any hiking either!

This is one of the best sunset views at Waikiki Beach because you get to see the sun set on everything, from the city, tall buildings, and the beach. This should definitely make your list to check out during your trip!

Sunset at Waikiki FAQs

The Waikiki Beach sunset time is usually between 7:00 and 7:30 pm during the summer season and 5:45 to 6:15 pm during the winter time. The sunset Waikiki time will vary depending on many things, but it is usually close to the same time every evening. You can always check while you are there to ensure you don’t miss it!

You can watch the sunset from all over Oahu, but one of the best spots is right at Waikiki Beach! There are plenty of great spots all along Waikiki to get a view of the most stunning sunset you’ve ever seen!

You will find all sorts of colors for each Hawaiian sunset. Some days you will see pink, purple and blue, while on other days, the sunsets in Hawaii are red, orange, and yellow. No matter what, each one is absolutely gorgeous!

Waikiki Beach truly is one of the best places to see a stunning Hawaiian sunset during your trip to Oahu. Be sure to visit there at least once at any of the spots mentioned below to see one of the best sunsets ever!

Read a couple of online reviews of TS that said the beach was quite narrow and the ocean swimming was a bit rocky in front of the hotel. Any comments from those of you in the know? And any other comments about TS are appreciated. Thank you all.

Directly in front of the hotel that is true - but a few steps further north it's fine

Tropical Sunset is next door to Zaccios in the centre of Holetown. It's a great location. I've never stopped there but we frequent Zaccios quite a bit each visit. The beaches can suffer from a bit of erosion in the winter months but it's quite a long beach and it's beautiful. They tend to build back up with sand spring and summer. If you're worried about stones just pop seashoes on, we have some really lightweight billabong ones, they make getting in the sea much more comfortable as quite a few of the beaches have coral pieces as you enter the sea.

sunset trip tropical

Staying there now.

The beach is probably 5 meters wide right outside the door give or take depending on the tide. Its a little cramped but nothing that would put me off. Its a little wider to the left and the right.

There is a few stones but nothing to worry about. Stones turn into sand so there will always be stones where there is sand.

We having a blast. The rooms are not the most modern I grant you but the the location is excellent.

This is my opinion and my own personal experience.

Whether or not you would like this place will depend on your perspective, where you have traveled to previously, what you comfort level is, and what you consider a good beach.

I wrote a review on Trip Advisor that calls the place Average, but I also said I am okay with Average.

I actually hated the place when I first went there. I wanted to send a note to the person on this forum who recommended it and say, are you serious? This is what you think is good?

I actually started calling other hotels to see if I could find another place to go. We didn’t locate another place, so we ended up staying there for our full 2 weeks. We decided to just give it a chance and ended up having a good time. We went back a second time, but it is doubtful that we will return given the beach situation. It is just not fun being clustered together on a small narrow beach in front of the zaccio dinners and not enjoying having to walk to find a good section to swim, since I didn’t like the rocks in the water.

The best thing about the place is the central location to Massy’s, the mall, and the restaurants. I think you are smart doing your research.

If you want to stay in town, pay a decent price, you don’t mind that it is not the best beach, and the rooms are really dated, then go for it.

The plus side is the AC worked well and the hot water and water pressure were good. Balconies were good sized and the views were terrific. A lot of pros and cons to weigh.

I you like snorkelling there are two breakwater groynes close to shore with lots of fish and some coral. Sting Rays can be seen there, often when fishermen bring their their catch for the day in and discard guttings in the sea.

We’re consistently awarded ‘best of the best’.

Just a few of the awards Sunset Travel has won

We’re Proud Members Of:

Better Business Bureau - Sunset Travel Inc - A+ Rating

Exclusive deals and unadvertised discounts

At Sunset Travel, We guarantee the lowest pricing

Baggage fees are not included in your quote….please check with your airline for their current Baggage Policies and Fees.

Baggage fees are typically cheapest if you pay them when you use the airline’s online Check-In process 24 hours before you fly.

If you’re not tech savvy and don’t want to check-in using online services, you can pay at the counter…but don’t be surprised if its $10 or so more expensive per bag.

Also, most airlines now will only accept credit cards if you want to by something when you are in the air…..e.g. Food, cocktails, wi-fi…….so waiving a $20 to get another drink won’t help.

We buy in bulk. Just like Costco or Sam’s Club.

Because we buy in bulk, we get cheaper prices, – which we pass on to you.

It is an upward spiral.

Our prices are low, so more people buy, so we sell more, which gets us even lower prices.

It helps to have an A+ BBB rating . We have never had a customer complaint since 1976 – that we did not solve immediately.

Which we also pass on to you 🙂

This is a tough call….It’s one of those expenses that, if you need it, you will be so relieved to have it, and if you don’t you’ll feel like it is a waste of money.

After years of helping people get home from a vacation ruined by storms, accidents, or medical emergencies, I now suggest that you consider at least some form of Trip Insurance to protect your vacation investment.

We have plans that meet most everyone’s needs or budget. Ask us which plan will be best for you.

**Note..…The part of trip insurance you want to pay attention to is the medical and transport coverage. If you get very sick, or bump or break something, it is VERY expensive to get you home or to a stateside hospital, and your normal medical/health insurance is unlikely to cover you.

The best insurance you can buy is CFAR (Cancel for Any Reason).

As long as you let us know before your plane departs, you get 100% of your money back, including your airfare – minus the cost of the insurance (About $198).

And if you have to be treated or sent home, you are covered.

**Another Note…..We are talking about insurance, so read the fine print. We are not insurance agents. We make nothing on selling insurance. We just think you are crazy to put yourself (or your $3000 vacation) at risk to save $198. We buy it every time we travel. But it’s your call.

Passport

Please, Please, Please be sure to check your passport.

Nothing is more deflating than to arrive at the airport and be turned away for not having a valid passport**. It DOES happen.

**And it must be valid for 6 months after your return date.**

Just to be clear, it’s worth repeating – your passport must be valid (not expiring) for at least six months beyond your return date.

Many countries are enforcing this now. You may read that some people do skate by, but don’t chance it.

Here is a link to obtaining or renewing a passport, and current travel safety advisories: http://travel.state.gov/

There are 2 prices that can change. The Resort price and the Airfare.

We monitor pricing, and as long as your room type is available AND the resort’s rules allow us to cancel and rebook it at the lower price for you, we will. We have no control over the resorts or their rules, but will do all we can to help you get the lowest price.

**Many times a resort will offer a big discount but it will be in the more expensive categories. So read each deal carefully – we do.

Airfare is a different animal. Once you purchase your air, you own it, regardless of who you purchase it from….this is the airlines rules, not ours. Unless you purchased a fully-refundable ticket (which most people never do because it’s more expensive)or buy Cancel for Any Reason trip insurance, there is no refund, BUT if you cancel your flight before it departs, the airlines will give you a ‘credit’ equal to what you paid, which you can use any time up to 12 months following the original date.

BUT there is still a catch – while you can use it at a later date, you will have to pay a $100-$200 ‘change’ fee and any difference in the price (which in most cases is higher). The only exception is Southwest Airlines, at this time they do not charge a “change” fee, just the difference in airfare if any.

I have nothing against the airlines. They are great partners. BUT, they have very rigid rules. So don’t expect them to bend much, if at all.
