tourist spots in albania

At only 11,100 square miles (28,748 square kilometres) and with a total population of just under three million people, Albania might be small, but it’s certainly not lacking in things to do and see. From the stunning beaches of the Albanian Riviera to gorgeous archaeological sites, Albania will not disappoint you. Here’s a list of the top 20 must-visit attractions in the country.

Albanian riviera.

The Albanian Riviera is, with the capital city Tirana, the most popular place in the country. The reason is that it is just amazing: long sandy and pebble beaches lapped by turquoise water, and lovely coastal hamlets with small Orthodox churches, cobblestoned streets and flowers everywhere. The best places to visit are Dhërmi, Drymades beach, Vuno, Qeparo and the seaside town of Himara .

10 Best Places to Visit in Albania

' src=

Still very much off the beaten path, year-on-year Albania is becoming an increasingly popular tourist destination thanks to its stunning scenery, interesting historic sites, and welcoming people. Isolated and shut off from the world for so long, Albania emerged from communist rule in 1991. Nowadays, visitors are invariably surprised at all that it has to offer; beautiful beaches lying alongside breathtaking mountain ranges and glittering lakes.

Thanks to its long and interesting history, Albania’s cities and scenic countryside are full of amazing old castles, Roman ruins, and Ottoman-era mosques and buildings, which make the country fascinating to explore. With picturesque towns such as Gjirokaster and Berat for visitors to enjoy, there is always something new to see and do.

The now colorful capital, Tirana, is full of monuments and museums offering a look at the country’s communist past. A fascinating country, now is the time to visit the best places in Albania, as word is quickly spreading about what this hidden gem has to offer.

10. Dhermi [SEE MAP]

Dhermi

With its welcoming turquoise waters and beautiful beaches that stretch into the distance, the gorgeous scenery of Dhermi is where many young Albanians head to in the summer. It is also home to some pulsating nightlife.

Located on a mountain slope overlooking the sea, the town boasts some stunning sunsets. Grabbing a drink at one of its numerous bars and restaurants while watching the sun go down is a lovely way to spend an evening.

While there is a fun and festive atmosphere about the place, with lively beachside bars blaring out music, there is more than enough beach to go around; you can always find a peaceful spot to simply kick back and enjoy the scenery of the Albanian Riviera.

9. Durres [SEE MAP]

Durres

Once the capital of Albania, Durres is located not far from Tirana on the country’s coastline. It is a very popular destination, which means that it can get a bit crowded during the summer.

With one of the largest ports in the Adriatic, the city is a bit stuffy and over-developed, although there is a nice stretch of beach for visitors and locals alike to enjoy. Along the seafront, there are lots of restaurants selling delicious fresh seafood.

Fought over for millennia by the Bulgarians, Greeks, Venetians, and Ottomans, among others, its wealth of historic sites entices just as many people as its beaches. The spectacular Roman amphitheater and fantastic archaeological museum are the undoubted highlights.

8. Sarande [SEE MAP]

Sarande

With its stunning location on the Ionian Sea, Sarande is blessed with year-round warm weather, sparkling waters, and a relaxed way of life.

While the seafront is a bit over-developed with its line of identity-less apartment blocks, there are lots of nice parts of Sarande to walk around, and loads of bars, restaurants and souvenir shops on offer.

In addition to the ancient ruins found in town, Sarande’s surroundings are full of historic sites and natural beauty, making it a great place to use as a base to explore the region.

7. Shkodra [SEE MAP]

Shkodra

Lying just a stone’s throw away from huge Lake Skadar that straddles the Montenegro-Albania border, Shkodra is a very pretty city to visit. The Buna River runs through town and the Albanian Alps can be seen off in the distance.

The undoubted highlight is Rozafa Castle. Over the course of its history, it has been ruled by the Illyrians, Venetians, and Ottomans, to name a few. The magnificent ramparts and ruins of the castle are fun to explore, and the views over Shkodra are breathtaking.

Although the center of the city has recently undergone extensive renovations, there are still plenty of lovely old buildings and historic sites to be found, such as the Ebu Beker Mosque and Orthodox Cathedral. The Historical Museum showcases just some of the region’s rich history and heritage.

With so much beautiful countryside surrounding Shkodra for visitors to explore, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

6. Berat [SEE MAP]

Berat

Widely regarded as one of the prettiest cities in the whole of the Balkans, Berat is known as ‘the Town of a Thousand Windows,’ as so many windows peer out at you from the front of its hillside buildings which are so tightly clustered together.

Located on a hillside, there are a number of Ottoman-era mosques and Byzantine churches scattered about town. One of the best views of Berat is from across the banks of the Osumi River which runs through it.

While simply wandering around Berat is a lovely way to spend the time, the town also has a great 13th-century hilltop castle, which is worth visiting for the outstanding views. There are also two interesting museums with some fascinating local costumes and artifacts on display and some splendid 16th-century icons.

5. Himare [SEE MAP]

Himare

With its beautiful setting on the Albanian Riviera, Himare’s sparkling turquoise waters and spectacular hilly coastline make it a great place to head if you’re after some sun, sea, and sand.

While its beaches and peaceful seaside promenade are what most people come for, the historic old town is lovely to wander around; its atmospheric tavernas are full of Mediterranean charm and delicious local seafood.

Perched atop a hill overlooking the old town is a delightful castle, which offers wonderful views over the sea. The nearby mountains also have some lovely trails and viewpoints for visitors to enjoy, while the surrounding countryside is home to spectacular churches and monasteries, such as the Monastery of the Cross and Athaliotissa.

4. Gjirokaster [SEE MAP]

Gjirokaster

Located in the south of the country, Gjirokaster is a delight to visit. Its beautiful old town is perched on the side of a hill overlooking a valley and its winding cobbled streets are full of quaint buildings and historic sites.

With over 500 homes and buildings protected and preserved as ‘cultural monuments’, Gjirokaster is full of wonderful architecture. It is often known as the ‘City of Stone’ due to the distinctive local rooves that can be seen everywhere you go.

Perched above the scenic Old Bazaar is Gjirokaster Castle, reputed to be the second largest in the whole of the Balkans. A fascinating place to visit, the castle has an underground Cold War-era bunker and an Armaments Museum for visitors to enjoy, alongside its impressive fortifications and ruins.

3. Kruje [SEE MAP]

Kruje

Lying just to the north of Tirana, Kruje – or Kruja, as it is known in English – is famous for being the home city of Albania’s national hero Gjergj Skanderbeg. In the 15th century, Gjergj managed to hold out against the Ottomans for 25 years from his base in Kruje.

Known as the ‘Adriatic Balcony’ by locals, the craggy mountain that looks over the city is home to the majestic Kruje Castle, which was once Skanderbeg’s base. Nowadays, there is an interesting museum about the hero as well as a fantastic 15th-century church located within its walls. The panoramic views from the castle are simply spectacular.

The Old Bazaar in the center of town is just as fascinating to walk around. Nestled away amongst its atmospheric streets you’ll find some delightful little cafes and restaurants, alongside the plethora of shops selling anything from souvenirs and artisan goods to antiques and leather products.

A picturesque and peaceful place, Kruje is well worth visiting for its historic sites and beautiful natural setting. The surrounding area is equally enchanting to explore, with its lakes, canyons, and mountains.

2. Butrint National Park [SEE MAP]

Butrint National Park

Home to a number of diverse ecosystems and stunning archaeological sites, Butrint National Park is a popular tourist destination, in large part due to its proximity to the Greek island of Corfu . Many people come to see its majestic blend of history and nature.

Covering a peninsula that is bordered by the huge Lake Butrint on one side and the Vivari Channel on the other, the natural beauty is magnificent; over 1,200 different types of animals and plants reside amongst its scenic wetlands, hills, and islands.

The main attraction, however, is the amazing archaeological site which covers over 2,500 years of history; this includes ancient city walls, remnants of a Roman theater, a Byzantine Basilica and two castles. Wandering around the ruins with the beautiful scenery all around you is a delightful experience. This is undoubtedly one of the hidden gems of what Albania has to offer.

1. Tirana [SEE MAP]

#1 of Best Places To Visit In Albania

Once full of grey, unwelcoming communist buildings, Tirana has transformed considerably since the early 90s. Albania’s capital is now a fun, friendly and festive place to visit.

Full of life, the now brightly colored pedestrian streets showcase some delightful Ottoman-era buildings and Italian architecture that highlights the country’s rich past. There are a number of great museums and art galleries worth checking out. Of particular interest is BUNK’ART, which was once a huge government bunker but now hosts art installations.

While it can be slightly chaotic in the traffic-filled center of town, the scenic Mount Dajti is just a short cable car ride away. With fantastic views of the city below and resplendent nature all around, it’s a lovely place to spend an afternoon.

With endless bars, cafes, and restaurants to be found around the trendy Blloku area, Tirana has a lively nightlife scene. Visitors to this under-visited capital invariably come away impressed at all that the city has to offer.

Best Time to Visit Albania

Albania is a stunning year-round destination, but choosing the best time to visit depends on your preferences.

Spring: This is when Albania’s landscapes burst out in color, with wildflowers carpeting the hillsides and the countryside coming alive. Visit archeological sites like Butrint National Park and enjoy hiking in the serene valleys of Theth , witnessing the reawakening of nature.

Summer: Beautiful sun-soaked days with turquoise waters and vibrant festivals, perfect for beach lovers. Explore the Albanian Riviera, full of secluded coves and lively beach towns like Himare. Spend your days in the crystal-clear sea and indulge in the delicious Mediterranean cuisine.

Fall: A quieter charm falls over Albania with pleasant weather. This is a really good time for hiking and exploring Albania’s rich cultural heritage. Discover UNESCO sites like Gjirokaster without crowds and join one of their annual wine festivals.

Winter: For more of a unique experience, with snow-capped peaks perfect for skiing and holiday magic in charming towns.

Coastlines and Beaches

With over 450 kilometers of coastline along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, Albania boasts many incredible beaches, each more enchanting than the last. But it’s more than just a destination; it’s a journey. Whether you’re looking to relax on soft sand, adventure beneath jagged cliffs, or glimpse the country’s history, you’ll find it all if you travel through Albania .

The Albanian Riviera is the jewel on the coast, with pristine beaches, hidden coves, and lively beach towns. From the idyllic Ksamil with white sands to the vibrant nightlife of Himarë , it’s perfect for sun-seekers.

Because Albania remains relatively unknown as a holiday gem, the beaches are unspoiled, with secluded bays and serene spots all along the coast. Hopping from one beach to the next is one of the best things to do in Albania .

Explore Dhermi’s soft sands, or head out to Castle Palermo’s neighboring beach dotted with umbrellas – there are so many great options to choose from. That, and the warm hospitality of the Albanian people who live on the coast, is the icing on the cake. Locals welcome travelers with open arms, sharing the traditions, cuisine, and beauty of their homeland.

Food, Culture, and Religion in Albania

Albania is a diverse country with an incredibly rich cultural heritage. Every meal is full of new flavors, every little village a glimpse into its past, and every church bell a reminder of peacefulness.

Food: Albanian cuisine is full of flavor, fusing Mediterranean and Balkan influences. From rich meats, fresh seafood, and colorful vegetables, no meal disappoints. Stroll along the vibrant local markets, where piles of fresh produce and dairy stand next to one another, and enjoy a cup of strong coffee.

Culture: Albania’s culture is a celebration of ancient traditions that come together, from spirited folk music and dance to the Roman, Ottoman, and Venetian remains. Explore UNESCO towns like Gjirokaster and Berat , where multiple influences come together. Synonymously, the people’s warm hospitality reflects Albania’s culture. Locals are incredibly welcoming and eager to share their traditions and stories.

Religion : There’s religious harmony in Albania, where faiths coexist peacefully. The country is predominantly Muslim but also has a significant Christian population. Because of this, during your Albania travel , you’ll find mosques, churches, and monasteries all throughout the country.

Why You Should Travel to Albania

As a true hidden gem in the Balkans, Albania is the perfect destination for every type of traveler. From lazing on dazzling beaches to climbing between the lush green valleys in the mountains or exploring its historic cities, there are many places to visit in Albania .

Explore its diversity, hopping around the gorgeous coastline, only stopping to dive into the rich cuisine. Later, roam through the rugged peaks of the mountains, exploring untouched nature, stunning rivers, and serene lakes. In between, you’ll find ancient cities like Berat , known as the ‘City of a Thousand Windows’. Roman, Ottoman, and Venetian influences come together in architecture, art, and traditions, all eagerly introduced to you by Albania’s warm and friendly people.

Safety and Travel Advice in Albania

Although Albania is a safe destination to travel to, it’s always good to be up-to-date about safety measures and tips for traveling to the country.

Natural disasters: Though the risk of earthquakes and tremors is common, serious earthquakes are less frequent. During the winter months, Albania sometimes experiences heavy rain, which can cause flooding. Stay informed by monitoring local and international news for the latest information and register at an embassy for emergency updates.

Landmines: If you’re visiting towns on the northern border with Kosovo to go hiking, always watch for signs regarding unexploded landmines. Though Albania declared its landmine-free status years ago, some areas remain clearly marked as dangerous zones.

Crime and safety in Albania : The public security in Albania is generally really good, especially in Tirana , and Albanians are very hospitable to visitors. Crime and violence do happen, but rarely include foreigners. Keep your valuables secure and leave any important belongings at home.

Learn more about travel safety

Traffic: If you’re renting a car in Albania , always keep an eye on the road and traffic. Road conditions can be poor, especially in rural areas, and Albanian driving can sometimes be a bit erratic. Follow traffic signs and use a 4×4 if you plan on off-roading.

Travel Insurance: One of the things we always recommend for your Albania holiday is purchasing travel insurance. Whether it’s lost luggage or an accident – travel insurance gives you more peace of mind on your travels. Check out these best travel insurances .

Beyond vague recollections of its Communist past, few travellers know much about Albania . Its rippling mountains and pristine beaches, lands littered with historical Roman ruins and pretty Ottoman towns remain largely undiscovered. Probably because of its undiscovered nature, Albania is also one of the most budget-friendly European destinations . Here's our pick of the best things to do in Albania.

2. Mount Dajti National Park

4. get a tan at the ionian coast, 5. get lost at the bazaar in gjirokastra, 6. the blue eye, 7. visiting kruja - one of the best things to do in albania for exploring local history, 8. remote villages in the albanian alps, 9. staying in ksamil - one of the best things to do in albania for a beach holiday, 10. butrint national park, 11. lake skadar, 12. traditional albanian food, 13. benja hot springs, 14. bunkers.

The information in this article is inspired by The Rough Guide to Europe on a Budget , your essential guide for visiting Europe.

Albania ’s capital used to regularly top lists for Europe's worst city. Decades of Stalinist rule left Tirana grey and grim, lacking in both infrastructure and services. Today Tirana is – while still often chaotic – a very pleasant little city with enough interesting things to do .

The Et'hem Bey Mosque in Tirana is one of the few mosques to have escaped destruction by the Communists, which had resulted in any kind of religious institution being either closed, demolished or converted into warehouses or schools by the end of 1967. The clock tower is a symbol of the municipality of Tirana and, in an ensemble with the Et'hem Bey Mosque, is a unique architectural landmark.

Visiting Skanderbeg Square , named after the national hero who briefly ensured Albania was independent of the Ottoman Empire in the fifteenth century, is undoubtedly one of the best things to do in Albania.

If you are wondering what to do in Tirana away from the city centre, head to Mount Dajti National Park, popular with Tirana's residents for fresh air and countryside walks. You can either take an Austrian-built cable car (expensive) or the city bus (cheap) and once there you’ll find hotels, guest houses and restaurants if you feel like staying overnight.

There are few better places to be in Albania than standing on the footbridge in the charming, easy-going town of Berat. From this vantage point, you’ll be surrounded by huddles of Ottoman houses, their dark, rectangular windows staring from whitewashed walls like a thousand eyes.

On the south bank is the sleepy Gorica district, kept in shadow for much of the day by a muscular backdrop of rock. To the north is the relatively sun-drenched Mangalemi district, from which steep, cobblestoned paths lead up to the hill-top Kalasa, an old citadel whose wonderful interior is up there with the best old towns in the Balkans.

Also note the Cobo winery, which is located near Berat in the village of Roshnik. Also note the Kobo winery, which is located near Berat in the village of Roshnik. A visit to a winery is one of the best things to do in Albania for experiencing local wine culture.

Albania has some wonderful stretches of beach along its Ionian shore - and there is still a good chance you'll have the beach to yourself . With its jumble of rugged mountains fringed by pristine curls of beach, Albania’s south is the most appealing part of the country.

Heading on down the Ionian Coast, you’ll find one of Europe’s few unspoilt sections of Mediterranean shore, a near-permanently sunny spot where the twin blues of sea and sky are ripped asunder by a ribbon of grey mountains. On a clear day, you’ll be able to see Italy from the 1027m-high Llogaraja Pass. Both routes converge at the beach town of Saranda, while further south is the fantastic ruins of Butrint.

Sitting proudly above the sparsely inhabited Drinos valley, Gjirokastra is one of Albania’s most attractive towns and home to some of its friendliest people. It was once an important Ottoman trading hub and today a sprinkling of nineteenth-century Ottoman-style houses line the maze of steep, cobbled streets. Gjiro is also etched into the nation’s conscience as the birthplace of the world-renowned author Ismail Kadare.

The Old Town’s centrepiece is its imposing Gjirokastra Castle, which is visible from any point in town. Built in the sixth century and enlarged in 1811 by Ali Pasha Tepelna, it was used as a prison by King Zog, the Nazis and Hoxha’s cadres; the interior remains suitably spooky.

Where to stay in Gjirokastra:

On the way between Gjirokastra and Saranda is the wonderful Blue Eye, an underwater spring forming a pool of deepest blue (50L). Its setting in a cool, remote grove is quite spectacular, but the water is bracing, to say the least. Hop on any bus or minivan plying the Saranda–Gjirokastra route, and ask to be let off at the Syri i Kaltër; the pool is 20min from the road on a clear path. There’s also a decent restaurant and hotel on site.

Lofty Kruja, 35km from Tirana, was the focal point of national hero Skanderbeg’s resistance to the Ottoman invasions of the fifteenth century, and you’ll see his likeness all over town. Most people make a beeline for the castle, which houses several restaurants and an excellent History Museum, whose diverting collection of weaponry, icons and the like is augmented by an impressive modern interior.

Also within the castle walls is the Ethnographic Museum, housed in a gorgeous building with a serene outdoor courtyard. Souvenir sellers have taken over the town and the best place to buy your Albania flag T-shirt, Skanderbeg statuette or Mother Teresa lighter is the restored Ottoman bazaar, just below the castle access road.

These remote mountains make up the southernmost part of the Dinaric Alps that stretch from Albania, through Serbia and as far north as Slovenia. The range is best explored by trekking around the valley of Valbona. it’s a long but enjoyable journey from the capital, taking in a ferry crossing on the emerald waters of Lake Koman, but entirely worth it for this magnificent mountain scenery.

The picture-perfect valley of Valbona, which follows a river of the same name, is nestled among a collection of towering karst limestone peaks that reach heights of up to 2690m. Home to some of the country’s most picturesque homesteads, visiting Valbona is one of the best things to do in Albania for a true taste of Albanian country living.

The main activity around Saranda is a visit to Butrint and the fantastic beaches of Ksamil, which can both be visited in a single day trip from the town.

The small coastal village of Ksamil within Butrint National Park has a smattering of lovely public beaches lapped by spectacularly clear waters. Each cove is overlooked by a restaurant serving reasonably priced seafood (Guvat is the best of the bunch). The beaches are beautiful but busy in summer, and there are a few small islands close enough to swim to if you want a little extra space.

Where to stay in Ksamil:

  • For beach location: Villa Abedini
  • For couples: Hotel Lula Ksamil

Splendidly sited on an exposed nub of land, the isolated ruins of Butrint National Park offer a peek into over 2500 years of history, and are a delight to explore on its eucalyptus-lined trails.

The area was first developed by the Greeks, and the expansive theatre and public baths were built soon after. Butrint then reached its zenith during Roman times, though most of the statues unearthed from this period are now in the museums of Tirana. You can see most of Butrint’s sights on a looped footpath, though do head up to the Acropolis for wonderful views and an excellent museum full of unearthed artefacts.

Oozing over the Albanian border, beautiful Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans, and also one of its most untouched. However, since it lies on the train line, it’s easily accessible and can make a good stop-off on your way to or from the coast. The main jump-off point is Virpazar, a cute little fishing village at the northern end of the lake, 1km back down the line to Podgorica from the station.

From here it’s a pleasant walk along the lake’s western shore, and though there’s nowhere to rent bikes if you’ve brought one along you’ll be in heaven. An hour’s ride will bring into sight a clutch of offshore monasteries, though to get any nearer you’ll have to search for a boat.

Albania’s largely meat-based cuisine brings together elements of Slavic, Turkish and Italian cuisines. Spit-roasted lamb is the traditional dish of choice, though today it’s qebab (kebabs) and qoftë (grilled lamb rissoles) that dominate menus, often served with a bowl of kos (yoghurt). Another interesting dish is fergesë, a mix of egg, onions and tomatoes (and meat in some regions) cooked in a clay pot.

Vegetarians will find that filling, generous salads are ubiquitous, and seafood is also plentiful around the coast. But for all this choice the modern Albanian youth – and many a tourist – subsists almost entirely on snack food, particularly burek, a pastry filled with cheese, meat or spinach; and sufllaqë, sliced kebab meat and french fries stuffed in a roll of flatbread.

In the southern part of Albania, not far from the town of Pärmet, are the Benja Hot Springs. They are located in a beautiful gorge of the Benja River, surrounded by lush greenery and spectacular mountain landscapes.

Visiting Benja Hot Springs is one of the best things to do in Albania for relaxation, thanks to their waters, which are naturally heated to a temperature of about 25-30 degrees Celsius. The hot springs consist of several cascading pools, each with its temperature and depth, and the water is known to have healing properties useful for various diseases.

Cross into Albania by land or sea, and you’ll soon notice clutches of grey, dome-like structures dotting the countryside. Under Hoxha’s rule, these bunkers were scattered around the country in tremendous numbers – estimates run as high as 750,000. These were no family shelters, but strategic positions to which every able-bodied man was expected to head, weapon in hand, at the onset of war.

Though Western spies did indeed make attempts to infiltrate the country, the bunkers were never really put to the test. Huge underground government bunkers can also be found, most notably in Tirana where one 106-room shelter known as Bunk’Art has been converted into a historical museum and art space, located near the Mount Dajti cable car station.

Here are some of my favorite travel resources I use for my travel adventures.

  • Gjirokaster
  • Lake Komani
  • Zvernec Island
  • Albanian Canyon
  • Dhermi & Himare

1. Gjirokaster

The beautiful  stone city  with houses from the Ottoman era is a great spot to visit, even as a  day trip from Saranda . Gjirokaster makes you feel like you’re in a fairy tale. It’s my favorite city in Albania.

Stroll through its tiny streets with  shops selling traditional and hand-made things  such as carpets, pillows, mugs, and others. After, walk up to the  castle  and enjoy stunning views of the valley and the city from above.

Ksamil is, for some, the best place in Albania for holiday and the most popular beach paradise. It’s also known as the  Turquoise Pearl of Albania . It has crystal-clear beaches, and many people come here for the summer holidays.

However, it gets very crowded in the summer (July and August). So, if you want to escape the crowds, check out these amazing beaches on the Albanian Riviera :

🏖 Buneci Beach 🏖 Lukova Beach 🏖 Plazhi I Shpelles 🏖 Krorëza Beach

Theth is one of the most popular places in the  Albanian Alps . If you want to disconnect and spend some time in nature, getting to know  traditional Albanian villages  and experiencing the peaceful lifestyle of locals, it’s the best to be.

You can stay in one of the  traditional huts  and enjoy delicious local food. Have a  traditional Albanian breakfast  with local bread, homemade fig marmalade, and butter in the morning. From Theth, you can make daily excursions to the  Grunas Waterfall or the Blue Eye .

Theth Church most beautiful places in Albania to visit

4. Lake Komani

Lake Komani is one of the most visited places in Northern Albania. If you don’t have time to visit the Albanian Alps, you can at least make it to this lake and cross it on the ferry, which will take you to the famous Valbona Valley .

For a moment, you might think you came to New Zealand and its fjords as the limestone mountains fall directly to the crystal-clear lake .

The ferry only leaves once a day from each place  (Koman and Fierze) . For the departure times, please refer to the  Komani Lake  website.

5. Zvernec Island

Zvernec Island is one of the highlights of Albania. This tiny island is located in the  Narta lagoon  and is only connected to the mainland with a small bridge. When you cross it, you’ll see the Byzantine  Monastery of St. Mary  with its cemetery.

Zvernec Island is also a perfect  day trip from Tirana . You can visit it together with the city of Vlore and its stunning beaches.

I highly recommend renting a bike in Vlore and riding to the island . It’s an unforgettable experience. You might even spot some pelicans on the way.

Berat is also known as the  city of thousands of windows . The legend describes two brothers, Tomorr and Shpirag , who fell in love with a local girl named Osum . However, the brothers didn’t know about each other’s love for Osum.

When Tomorr discovers that his brother is also meeting her, he asks him to stop it. But Shpirag refused to do so.

Therefore, a  fight between the two brothers  started, during which both of them died. When Osum heard the news, she cried so long that her  tears were turned into a river .

The two mountains between which Berat is built are named after the two brothers, and the  River Osum  flows through the city.

Stroll through its tiny streets, enjoy its peaceful atmosphere, and chat with locals.

Kruje is  the former capital of Albania , which already says a lot about its importance. It’s also where  Skanderbeg , an Albanian national hero, fought against the Ottomans, stopping them from spreading further to central and western Europe.

Learn more about its history inside the museum in  Kruje Castle . Walk through Kruje’s  Old Bazaar  with traditional things. It’s a great place to buy some souvenirs.

Stay in one of the  traditional hotels  and enjoy  Albanian culture .

8. Albanian Canyon

I’m not sure this place is officially named this way. Still, after seeing it, I refer to the valley as Albanian Canyon. It’s one of the most spectacular places in Albania, stretching between Korce and Permet .

There are only a few villages on the way and other than that, you’ll only enjoy the stunning views of the river passing through the valley and the mountains arising from it.

So stop on the way and take photos . It’s truly incredible.

9. Dhermi & Himare

Dhermi and Himare have some of Albania’s most popular beaches and beach resorts . If you’re only looking for a beach holiday and  relaxation in an all-inclusive resort , visit one of these places.

These are the most beautiful beaches in the area :

10. Elbasan

Elbasan is one of the biggest cities in Albania. But I want to draw your attention to spots around it. You can visit the Funari Lake (Liqenet e Funarit) with its beautiful nature, or make it to the Holta’s Canyon .

This place is especially fitted for adventurous souls who want to experience adrenaline in its gorge , small waterfalls , and crystal-clear waters .

11. Valbona

Valbona town is another beloved spot in the Albanian Alps with its famous  Valbona hike . You can start this hike in Shkodra , and it’ll take around 2 to 3 days to complete.

On the first day, you’ll cross the spectacular  Lake Komani on a ferry  before reaching Valbona. The next day, you’ll cross the Valbona Pass before descending to Theth.

It’s the best 2-day hike in the Albanian Alps and the perfect adventure for everyone who loves trekking in the wilderness.

12. Shkodra

Shkodra is one of the most important cities in Northern Albania. It’s also the departure point to the Albanian Alps .

What you can’t miss in this city is the  Rozafa Castle , which has a unique legend about the Rozafa woman who sacrificed her life for the castle.

In the evening, go to the old town of Shkodra, see the local  mosque , and enjoy its atmosphere.

I highly recommend staying overnight in  Hotel Tradita , which has a beautiful garden and rooms built in a traditional style . You’ll also experience a traditional Albanian dinner with live music in the background.

Rozafa Castle most beautiful places in Albania to visit

13. Lake Shkodra

When you’re visiting Shkodra, make some time to check out the nearby lake.

Lake Shkodra creates a natural border between Albania and Montenegro. It’s another great place to relax and disconnect in nature . Besides, many people skip it, so it’s less crowded .

You can spend a great day on the shores of the lake, relax, go kayaking , or rent a bike and ride around for a while. Would you make it to the Montenegrin border on the bike?

You can also join this boat excursion on Lake Shkodra with a local guide to learn about its surroundings and history.

14. Mrizi i Zanave Agro Farm

Finally, I have something special for all the foodies , gastronomy, and agrotourism lovers.

Mrizi I Zanave is  one of the best agro farms not only in  Albania, but the entire Balkan peninsula. You should spend at least  1 night in its traditional rooms  and see the cellars, where they prepare  homemade products  such as cheese, raki, wine, dried tomatoes, and smoked meat.

They produce almost everything you could imagine, and the food is incredibly delicious .

Albania Hotel Tradita Shkodra

The capital of Albania, Tirana, offers you a great insight into the country’s history. It’s the perfect spot to  start your Albanian itinerary . You’ll learn about the former communist regime, which affected Albania in various ways inside the  Bunk’ Art .

Tirana also has great nightlife. Go to the  Blloku district  and enjoy an Albanian dinner with the first tasting of Raki (Albanian fruit brandy).

Tirana Bunk'Art bunkers and underground tunnels

16. Cape of Rodon

Only a few kilometers from Tirana stands the famous Cape of Rodon with its castle and the  Church of St. Anthony . This strip of land extending into the Adriatic Sea is truly spectacular.

You can walk through, visit its castle, and enjoy the beautiful virgin beaches in summer. The  castle  was built in the 1400s for a quick stop to avoid  Ottoman invaders . Enjoy its stunning views and make a trip full of  history, culture, and beach .

I recommend visiting some of these beaches around :

17. Saranda

Saranda is Albania’s second most visited city , mainly thanks to its  great international connections . You can take a ferry daily between  Saranda and Corfu Island in Greece .

You can visit the  Lekursi Castle  on the hill behind the city, where you’ll get the city’s best views and see the sea. Then just walk on the seaside promenade, enjoy the weather, and have a nice  Greek Iced Cappucino .

Spend a day on one of these beaches around Sarande on the Albanian Riviera :

Saranda albania road trip itinerary

18. Butrint National Park

Butrint National Park hosts  the largest archaeological site  in the country. You can get there easily from Saranda or Ksamil , even by taking a  local bus .

Explore the ancient theatre with its castle and the stunning views of the park with the sea. Can you spot Corfu Island from its castle?

Another thing that draws my attention at the park’s entrance is the unique wooden log on which locals transport vehicles – don’t miss out on it. It’s super funny.

tourist spots in albania

Permet is famous for its  natural thermal baths , 8 km/5 miles from the town. Locals say that each pot has different  benefits for the human body . So, come and experience it yourself.

You can walk on the  Katiu Bridge  and take great photos of the baths.

The Permet town is a  traditional Albanian place  where time stops momentarily. See how locals live, chat with them, and enjoy the slow-paced lifestyle. It’s also nicknamed the ‘City of Roses,’ thanks to the beautiful rose flowers that decorate its streets. It has a charm.

Albania road trip itinerary 10 days Permet

Korce is also named  the cultural capital of Albania . No wonder it has this unique vibe to meet and see locals enjoying evenings in the  Old Bazaar with live music .

Visit the  Resurrection of Christ Cathedral , walk through the  Old Bazaar , and get traditional products such as  Raki, Morava Honey, or Gliko .

Visit  Café-Musem Komiteti  to taste different types of Raki or go for a beer tasting in the local brewery .

If you love road-tripping and stunning views , like me, you can’t miss driving through the famous Llogara Pass. Imagine driving from the inland, surrounded by mountains and trees, and all of a sudden, you come to the point where the breathtaking Adriatic Sea spreads out in front of you .

This is how driving through the Llogara Pass feels like. It’s one of the best things to do in Albania . Enjoy the curvy roads with the best views of the entire Albanian Riviera . The scenery is like in a movie ; you must drive through on your road trip.

With its extensive coastline and clear inland waters, Albania is a prime destination for water sports. Kayaking in the Karaburun Peninsula allows adventurers to explore secluded caves and beaches inaccessible by land. Snorkeling and diving in the Ionian Sea reveal a rich underwater world of marine life and sunken ruins, while sailing trips offer a leisurely way to experience the beauty of the Albanian Riviera.

Winter Sports

Although less known for its winter sports, Albania’s mountainous regions, such as the Dajti Mountain near Tirana and the Valbona Valley, provide opportunities for skiing and snowboarding. The country’s developing infrastructure for winter sports means less crowded slopes and a chance to enjoy the snow-covered landscapes in tranquility.

Eco and Agro-tourism

For those interested in sustainable travel and experiencing rural life, Albania’s eco and agro-tourism initiatives offer a unique perspective. Farms and guesthouses across the country, especially in the northern and southern regions, invite visitors to participate in daily activities, from milking cows to harvesting organic produce. This approach not only supports local economies but also promotes environmental conservation.

Albania’s allure lies in its diversity, offering something for every traveler, from the sun-soaked beaches of its Riviera to the ancient ruins that dot its landscape. As you plan your visit, consider traveling between April and June or September and October for the best weather conditions. Public transportation is available but renting a car provides more flexibility to explore off-the-beaten-path destinations. Embracing its rich history, stunning natural landscapes, and warm hospitality, Albania tourist attractions stand as a testament to the beauty and resilience of the Balkans. Best Cities To Visit In Southern Albania & Coast

1. gjirokastra – one of the best cities on my list.

Things to Do On The Albanian Riviera - Gjirokastra Castle

Gjirokastra is known for its beautiful Ottoman architecture and excellent location among the snow-capped peaks of the South Albanian Drino Valley. Charming cobbled streets lead to the castle, the most essential part of the city, often called the “City of Stone.”

While visiting Gjirokastra, you will also want to see the Zekate House, an early 19th-century tower considered the best example of Ottoman architecture in the city. This beautiful and fascinating ancient city is easily one of the most beautiful places in Albania.

2. Albanian Riviera

Albanian Riviera Guide - Gjipe beach

The Albanian Riviera is, without question, one of the most popular tourist spots in Albania. The Riviera has a growing reputation as an important music center with numerous international music festivals, including Turtle Fest and Soundwave Albania.

Nightclubs such as Havana Beach Club near Dermis and Jale Beach’s Follie Marine attract young people from all over Europe to the Albanian Riviera.

The seaside town of Himara is one of the coolest up-and-coming places on the Riviera. The beaches of Llamani, Porto Palermo, and Filikuri are some of the most beautiful in the region. The beach of Drymades is one of the busiest and most fun in the Balkans. The Riviera definitely tops the list if you’re trying to figure out where to go in Albania for a beach vacation.

3. Pogradec

Pogradec in Albania: Ohrid Lake shore with some people and boats in the late summer

Located on the shore of Lake Ohrid in eastern Albania, Pogradec is one of the most promising places in the country and is well worth a visit.

Lake Ohrid is the deepest lake in the Balkans , and although the Macedonian part of the lake is more popular, the Albanian coastline is undoubtedly growing.

Pogradec is known for its rich folklore, and the Puppet Theater Festival is one of the most interesting events to take place in the country.

Shenk-Jablanica National Park is located about a 30-45-minute drive from Pogradec, near the fountains of Drilon.

Berat one of the places to visit in Albania

Berat is known as the “city of a thousand windows,” thanks to the typical Ottoman-style houses that Berat is famous for. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site  with more than 2,000 years of packed history.

The ancient city of Berat is an absolute must-see in Albania. If you climb to the top of the castle, you will be treated to a fantastic view of the city of Berat . Inside the fortress walls, you will see houses where people still live their everyday lives.

Wine tasting is one of the best things to do, especially for vino lovers. Albania is home to a surprisingly good vineyard scene. You can visit the four best vineyards (Cabo, Nurellari, Malinati, and Luani) in a day and taste the best of local Albanian wine.

Also, you may visit Roshnik – a well-known village in the area of Berat, which is often called the cleanest and one of the most civilized villages.

If you are a budget traveler and love to connect with other travelers while backpacking, you should stay at Berat Backpackers, an excellent hostel in one of the most beautiful places in Albania; you  can find rates and availabilities here .

A donkey standing next to a red door in Qeparo, a popular place to visit in Albania

Okay – confession – Upper Qeparo is magical and maybe my favorite place in Albania (and no, not just because of the donkey I saw). It is an ideal place to see a traditional Albanian village but with a quirk: the village was left half abandoned.

After the fall of communism, many people went abroad, and the village was completely deserted. About half of the village is renovated, but many old stone houses are still in ruins. The streets are touched with age, with beautiful views and a rich history surrounding them.

You might lack things to do, but that is the beauty of this quiet, authentic village.

Where To Go In Albania - Dhermi

With turquoise waters and beautiful secluded beaches, the beautiful landscape of Dhermi attracts young Albanians from all over the country in summer. Not only the beaches but also Dhermi is the epicenter of lively nightlife, another reason the young people flock here when school’s out.

The city is situated on a hill overlooking the sea and offers spectacular sunsets. Take a drink in one of the many bars and restaurants at sunset; it is always an excellent way to spend the neon evening in Dhermi.

Although this place offers a cheerful and festive atmosphere , with lively beach bars scattered throughout, there are more than enough beaches for a quiet place to sit and enjoy the Albanian Riviera landscape.

7. Theth National Park – Albanian Alps

8 Ideas For Biking And Hiking In Eastern Europe_Blue Eye of Theth

If you like to spend time outdoors, Theth is undoubtedly one of the best places in Albania and makes for a great Albania weekend getaway.

Nature lovers will enjoy the serene landscapes and charming villages that are still filled with authentic traditions, cuisine, and unique cultures.

Far away from the largest Albanian cities, tucked in the north of the country at the top of the Albanian Alps , Theth remains quiet and quaint most of the year.

T he National Park in Theth is probably the most beautiful place in Albania, with Grunas Falls and the Lock-in Tower well-liked by tourists. If you’re planning a getaway in nature, Theth is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Albania for sure.

Mount Theti, Razma, Boga, and Vermoshi offer an unforgettable experience of Albania in its most natural state, experiences you certainly cannot miss. If you love the outdoors, Albania is one of the best places you can travel to in Europe.

This natural wonder boasts soaring cliffs, emerald waters, and dramatic rock formations, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts and thrill-seekers. You can embark on a thrilling canyoning expedition, navigating through the canyon’s twists and turns.

Marvel at the sheer walls rising around you as you traverse the pristine waters. The Osumi Canyon is a hidden gem where you can connect with the raw beauty of Albania’s landscapes.

View of Lake Ohrid with fisherman boats near Lin in Albania

The picturesque village of Lin is located on a small peninsula on the western shore of Lake Ohrid. This beautiful lake separates Albania from neighboring North Macedonia and is an important region of study for the southeastern part of the country.

Lin, on the Albanian side of the lake, is a beautiful place, which is obviously its main attraction. It is a lovely village with many sandy and pebbly beaches , ideal for a picnic on a sunny afternoon or paddleboarding on the calm, beautiful waters of Ohrid.

10. Saranda

Best Hotels In Saranda, ALBANIA - beach

A coastal gem on the Ionian Sea , Saranda is a popular destination for sun and sea lovers. Its beautiful beaches, including Ksamil and Mirror Beach, offer a chance to relax and soak up the Mediterranean sun. Saranda is also a gateway to exploring ancient sites like Butrint and the mesmerizing Blue Eye.

The town’s vibrant waterfront promenade comes alive in the evenings, offering a taste of Albania’s lively nightlife.

Brands We Use And Trust

Best places to see in central albania.

Best Castles In Albania - Durrës Castle

Once the capital of Albania, Durres is located near Tirana , on the country’s coast. This is a very popular destination, meaning there can be gobs of people here spilling over from Tirana in the summer months.

With one of the largest ports of the Adriatic, the city is somewhat suffocated with development. However, there is a good stretch of beach where tourists and locals can enjoy many lovely beaches. And along the promenade, many restaurants offer delicious fresh seafood near the sand.

Over thousands of years, a war between Bulgarians, Greeks, Venetians, and Turks has made this city’s history as rich as its beaches. The impressive Roman amphitheater and the fantastic archaeological museum are among the biggest pulls to the town.

Things To Do In The Albanian Riviera - Ksamil Beach

South of Saranda, near the Greek border, is the beautiful seaside resort town of Ksamil, located in Butrint National Park. It has an impressive coastal location with many flocking to it.

Ksamil is one of the best beach towns in Europe and will make you feel as though you have just touched down at the beaches of the Caribbean. It is an escape in Europe like none other.

The village has bars and restaurants on the beach and four small coastal islands surrounded by crystal-clear waters, ideal for swimming and diving.

This is undoubtedly one of the last unknown treasures on the continent. Today, however, more and more tourists are finding Ksamil, and it is rapidly growing into one of the most popular destinations in Albania.

One of the best beaches in Albania, featuring a majestic palm tree on its sandy shore.

In 1912, Albania declared independence in Vlore. Therefore, Vlore holds a special place in the hearts of us Albanians. That is why the Museum of Independence is located in this small town .

If you are a huge history buff looking to engulf yourself in Albanian history, you can go to the ancient Kanina Castle. According to local projections, the castle dates back to the 3rd Century B.C.

If you are interested in nature and the beautiful Albanian environment, you can visit the Bay of Vlora. You can enjoy the gentle sea breeze and simultaneously observe the bay’s fauna. There are many species of animals in the area, some of which you may not be familiar with or have ever imagined seeing in Europe.

What To Buy In Albania - Carpets in Kruje

Located just 20 miles northwest of Tirana, Kruja is a historic city at the foot of the impressive mountain by the same name. Other sights in Kruja include the medieval castle, the site of a legendary battle won by the national hero of Albania, Skanderbeg against the Ottoman Turks, and the Skanderbeg Museum.

Blue Eye Albania - Syri i Kalter or Blue Eye, a natural spring

Nature’s own masterpiece, the Blue Eye, is a mesmerizing natural spring in southern Albania. Its crystal-clear waters form a stunning pool that’s so clear you can see the depths below.

The vibrant blue hue of the water, surrounded by lush greenery, is truly a sight to behold. Whether you’re looking for a refreshing swim or a serene spot for a picnic, the Blue Eye offers a unique and refreshing experience.

18. Butrint National Park

Butrin - Things to Do In The Albanian Riviera

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Butrint National Park is an archaeological wonderland that allows you to step back in time.

The ancient city of Butrint, nestled within the park, boasts Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian ruins, all shrouded in lush greenery. Wander through ancient theaters, temples, and fortifications as you uncover layers of history.

The Greeks lived in Butrint in the 6th Century B.C., and later, the Romans seized power. Butrint is one of the longest-inhabited cities in Europe. The first remains of life date back to 50,000 years ago! You can’t imagine the history this city holds.

What sets Butrint apart is its unique blend of nature and antiquity, with a backdrop of forests and wetlands that provide a haven for birdwatching and wildlife enthusiasts.

A brick building in Korca that is a must-see on your guided tour.

Known as the “City of Serenades,” Korca is a charming town in southeastern Albania that exudes a laid-back vibe.

It’s a great place to visit to explore Albania’s cultural heritage, with its traditional architecture, the country’s best museums, and lively local markets. Don’t miss the chance to savor the local cuisine and experience the warmth of Albanian hospitality.

Korca offers a glimpse into everyday life in Albania, away from the tourist crowds.

20. Bovilla Lake

A cloudy sky over Bovilla Lake one of the serene places to visit in Albania

Nestled in the hills surrounding Tirana, Bovilla Lake is a serene escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. It’s a popular spot for locals and visitors alike to unwind and enjoy nature. You can take a boat ride on the lake, have a leisurely picnic, or hike in the nearby hills for panoramic views. The tranquil atmosphere and natural beauty make Bovilla Lake a perfect day trip from Tirana.

  • Where To Go Hiking In Albania

Northern Albania

21. shkoder.

Best Castles In Albania - Old church in Rozafa castle ruins near Shkodra city

Located in the north of Albania, this picturesque city is one of Albania’s best destinations and a good starting point for fantastic road trips through the region. You will learn that Shkoder is a city of bicycles. Most locals you find, especially around the center, all ride bicycles as transport around town.

It is also an incredibly cheap place. If you are looking for a place in Albania where you get the best value for your money, look no further than Shkoder.

Travel back in time with the charm of Shkoder. The architecture is different from any other city in Albania. You might even feel like you are in an old-school film nearly a Century back in time.

If you were learning some simple phrases in Albanian, you might have difficulties conveying them in Shkoder. Southern Albanians speak a different dialect than northern Albanians, like in Shkoder.

Find a Shkoder tour we recommend here.

Vuno’s not on the tourist radar anymore, much less on the local radar. It is a tiny town along the route to the Albanian Riviera.

Vuno has the same charm as Upper Queparo, which I love so much. Traditional stone houses and cobblestoned roads pass through the village and lead to a beautiful view of the olive groves and beaches along the Albanian Riviera. However, Vuno was abandoned decades ago and is only slowly (very slowly) rebuilding.

Gjipe Beach is not far away, and it is nice to chill if you stay in Vuno for a few nights.

23. Apollonia

Where To Go In Albania - Temple ruins in Apollonia Albania

Apollonia is an ancient city that flourished during the Roman Empire. Today’s biggest draw to the town for you is all the well-preserved ancient buildings and remains inside the Apollonian Archaeological Park. It is a must-see for those who are into Roman architecture and the period.

Find an Apollonia tour we recommend here.

A sandy beach with umbrellas, a must-visit place.

One of the best places in Albania is Borscht. Borsch has the longest beach in Albania, making it one of the most noteworthy in the country. Situated among olive groves, it is a beautiful place to hide from the madness of Saranda in summer.

We highly suggest visiting Borsch Castle, which is located on the mountain overlooking the beach. The castle is in ruins but is still often completely forgotten by tourists. The view is breathtaking, and there is still a reason to visit it.

The castle also has an old mosque, which the Turks added. The mosque does not hold services because it is almost completely destroyed. However, its beautiful interior is still pretty much intact, and you can see some awe-inspiring paintings on the ceiling.

Things To See In Tirana & Surroundings

25. et’hem bey mosque, tirana.

THINGS TO DO IN TIRANA, ALBANIA - Clock Tower and Mosque in the center, Tirana, Albania

The largest city in Albania, Tirana is home to Et’hem Bay Mosque, which demonstrates the beauty and friendliness of Islam. It is not a large mosque, but the Et’hem Bay mosque has a beautiful architectural structure. The dome’s interior has a complex image that will make your jaw drop. This mosque is not only a religious but also a historical symbol for Albania.

Apart from the mosque, Tirana is packed with sites such as Bunk’Art, Dajti Mountains National Park, the National History Museum, the National Art Gallery, Sheshi Skenderbej, and many other attractions.

Albania Travel Guide: What To Know Before You Go

The best part about Albania as a holiday destination is undoubtedly the unknown. Not everyone has weighed in on their experiences, but those who’ve been there know what it’s like. Those who haven’t can only guess.

Hopefully, the following information will allow you to paint a clearer picture of the best of Albania and where to go in Albania.

Transportation In And Around Albania

What To Wear In Albania_Sarande

Getting around Albania as a tourist is an adventure in itself, and honestly, it’s pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. The country’s transport system offers a mix of modernity and a touch of the old school, giving you a real feel of the place.

First things first, buses and furgons (minibuses) are your best bet for getting from city to city. They’re affordable, reasonably reliable, and a great way to mingle with locals. Just be prepared for a lack of strict schedules; furgons, for example, tend to leave when they’re full. It’s part of the charm, really.

For those looking to explore more remote areas, renting a car might be the way to go. It gives you the freedom to discover Albania at your own pace, and while the roads can be a bit of a mixed bag in terms of quality, the stunning views you’ll encounter are worth every bump. Just make sure you’re comfortable with a bit of adventurous driving.

In cities, walking or grabbing a taxi for short distances is your best move. Taxis are relatively inexpensive, but it’s a good idea to agree on the fare before you start your journey to avoid any surprises. For the tech-savvy traveler, Albania does not have Uber or Lyft. Instead, you will need to use the local Speed Taxi App, which makes it easy to get around the urban areas.

And here’s a little tip: don’t hesitate to ask locals for directions or advice on getting around. Albanians are known for their hospitality and are usually more than happy to help a visitor out. So, whether you’re navigating the bustling streets of Tirana, exploring the historical sites, or soaking up the sun on the Albanian Riviera, getting around is all part of the experience.

Other Expenses In Albania

Hiking In The Balkans - Beautiful landscape of Accursed Mountains viewed from Valbona-Theth

Let’s break down the expenses you’re likely to face so you can enjoy your trip without any money woes. First off, accommodation prices can vary widely, from budget-friendly hostels to more luxurious hotels . Hostels are a steal, especially if you’re cool with sharing a room. For a bit more privacy, guesthouses or mid-range hotels are the way to go, and they won’t break the bank either.

Food is another area where you can either save or splurge. Street food and local eateries are your best friends if you’re looking to keep costs down. They offer delicious, authentic Albanian dishes at prices that are hard to beat. If you feel like treating yourself, there are also higher-end restaurants where you can indulge in gourmet meals at a fraction of what you’d pay back home.

Getting around is another consideration. Public transport, like buses and furgons (minibusses), is dirt cheap, but brace yourself for a lack of punctuality. Renting a car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, though fuel and rental fees add up. For city jaunts, taxis are convenient and reasonably priced; make sure to agree on the fare upfront.

Don’t forget about entrance fees for museums, historical sites, and natural parks. They’re usually not too steep, but they can add up if you’re hitting up multiple spots in a day. Lastly, set aside some cash for souvenirs and unexpected finds; Albanian markets are treasure troves of unique gifts and handmade crafts.

All in all, Albania is a budget-friendly destination, but like any trip, it’s the unplanned adventures that often become the most memorable (and sometimes the costliest).

And don’t forget to budget for a few authentic, local souvenirs to remember your travels!

We recently visited my son, who lives in Albania. I followed a number of your recommendations & we had the trip of our lives. I’m planning my next trip back, and I want to thank you for promoting this beautiful country.

We recently visited my son who moved to Albania a year ago. I followed your blog and included a number of your recommendations in our Albanian travels (the BEST was Lili at Homemade Food Lili in Berat. What an experience!). There are not many bloggers who include Albania in their travels.. I’m so thankful you did. What a beautiful country with the kindest, most hospitable people I’ve ever met in all my travels. Planning my next trip back soon.

I would like to hire a car in tirana city and one way to sarande Any reputable albanian hire car in tirana please

Did you find one? Planning on doing the same

please, when you take the responsibility to advertise the tourism in Albania, you better learn the history properly. Everything you see in Albania speaks Albanian, neither roman nor greek. It requires deeper study to tell the world that Butrinti, and all historic sites of ALBANIA speak the history of ALBANIANS who were the ones to create other NATIONS. Descending by Pelasgians/Illyrians, the ALBANIAN people are the oldest in Balkan/ILLYRIAN Peninsula and their ALBANIAN Language is the base of all the other languages that our neighbours speak. The time will come when the world will learn that TROJ=LAND or T’ +ROJ= TO+LIVE= was the land inhabited by ALBANIAN speaking people and was the only EMPIRE before roman and byzant were introduced. The logic says that it should be 1 and then you can divide it by smaller 2 pieces. please don’t take credits of ALBANIAN history and give them to others before knowing the TRUTH- Before GOD you are very WRONG and so before us, ALBANIANS-thanks

I have just one day in Tirana what could i see?

Hmm, maybe enjoy a traditional Albanian meal at one of the local restaurants in the Blloku district. (This area is known for its vibrant atmosphere) as well as Bunk’Art and a wander the city. Try looking here for other ideas https://www.chasingthedonkey.com/a-weekend-in-tirana-in-48-hours/

Best places to visit in Albania: A one week itinerary

tourist spots in albania

Soaring alpine peaks, centuries-old castles, dramatic canyons and shimmering, sun-soaked bays are just some of the incredible wonders of Albania, which makes this one of the best kept secrets in the Balkans.

The compact country is blissfully off the well-trodden European tourist circuit, and a great option for backpackers thanks to its relatively budget-friendly tours, public transportation and accommodation options.

Shkoder, Albania

While many travellers try and combine a quick trip here with its more popular neighbours like Greece, Italy and Montenegro , there are so many places to visit in Albania that it’s easy to fill up a whole week and still hardly scratch the surface.

I should know; I spent nine days exploring from north to south, and still didn’t quite manage to tick everything off of my to-do list (I’m looking at you, Albanian Alps hiking trip).

So, what’s the best way to see this Balkan nation’s top spots if you only have one week for your Albania trip? Here are the greatest hits.

Day 1: Tirana

Most people kick off their Albania itinerary in Tirana , since the capital is home to the international airport and is well connected by bus with other destinations throughout the country. It’s also possible to see all of the main attractions in a single day, since they’re quite close together in the walkable city centre.

tourist spots in albania

One of the top places to visit in Tirana is Skanderbeg Square, a large, pedestrian-only plaza with a huge statue of a military commander on horseback, and a couple of museums including the National Historic Museum. This is also home to landmarks like the Clock Tower, and picturesque Et’hem Bey Mosque.

Be sure to take a quick walk through the Castle of Tirana, a former fortress that now holds trendy bars, boutiques and restaurants within its walls.

Skanderbeg Square

One of the top Tirana attractions is Grand Park (also known as the Artificial Lake) where a busy promenade winds around the manmade lake. Here, you’ll enjoy great city views, a botanical garden, forested trails, a pool, zoo and playgrounds, as well as restaurants and cafes overlooking the water.

Other spots to see include Bunk’Art which is a former bunker-turned-gallery accessed by tunnels, the Pyramid, and the Dajti Ekspres which is the longest cableway in the Balkans at 4,670 metres high.

Day 2: Shkodër

One of the prettiest Albania tourist attractions is the city of Shkodër, which is a two hour drive north of Tirana en route to the towering Albanian Alps. It lies on the end of Lake Shkodra (also called Lake Skadar and Lake Scutari), and is so close to the border that it’s possible to see Montenegro across the water.

Shkoder, Albania

The highlight of a visit to Shkodër is Rozafa Castle, a grand, 4000-year-old fortification perched high on a hillside overlooking the entire city and the meandering Drin and Buna rivers. Crumbling stone walls and arched doorways peek out into the horizon, and the centuries-old masterpiece combinated with the stunning surroundings make this spot photo heaven.

The castle is a half hour walk from downtown and taxis aren’t easily available, so plan accordingly if you’re meeting a guided tour or need to take a bus back to Tirana. Admission is 200 lek (about $2)

Shkoder Castle in Albania

Back in the old town, pastel facades line the pedestrian-only streets where there are restaurants, cafes and some small shops. It’s impossible to miss the Ebu Bekër Mosque which was built in the ‘90s to replace one that was destroyed during communist rule, and there are also a handful of sun-soaked parks complete with palm trees.

Shkoder, Albania

Public buses go back and forth all day long, which depart from the main bus terminal in Tirana and drop riders off in downtown Shkodër a few blocks from the mosque. It costs 350 lek on the way there and 400 lek back, which works out to about $4 each way.

Shkoder, Albania

Shkodër is just one of the great day trips from Tirana: some other options include visiting the Castle of Kruja, cruising along the gem-toned Shala river and hiking up Mount Gamti for an incredible view of Bovila Lake:

Day 3: Berat

Known as the ‘City of a Thousand Windows’, Berat city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most enchanting destinations in Albania thanks to its towering castle, pretty patchwork of window frames and perch along the banks of the Osum River.

Berat Albanina

Dating back to the Ottoman era, Berat is located in the Berati region which is known for marble mining, olive groves and producing the famous Albanian alcohol raki. There are also vineyards including Alpeta Winery which has been making wine and raki since the 90s, and the family-run Cibo Winery which opened the first tasting room in Albania.

Start your day here exploring the medieval centre, which is a maze of hilly cobblestone streets and notable structures like the Leaden Mosque which dates back to the 16th century, and the Gate of the Pasha.

Gate of the Pasha in Berat Albanina

The main attraction is the 13th century Berat Castle (Kalaja e Beratit), a complex with crumbling churches, Ottoman mosques and panoramic viewpoint overlooking the city. At one point there were 44 churches and two mosques here, but most were reduced to rubble during wars and destruction at the hands of the communist leader Enver Hoxha.

Today, some of the ruins remain and there are also a handful of restaurants and shops at the top.

Berat Castle in Berat Albania

A winding road from the city centre leads up the hill, and there’s also a more adventurous footpath starting from a small set of stairs on the north side of Rruga Antipatrea, between Gorica Bridge and the one near the Old Town.

It takes about 30 minutes to do the climb, and the effort is rewarded with great vantage points of the windowed houses and St. Michael’s Church.

Berat Albania

End the day with a stroll along Bulevardi Republika which is lined with cafes, bars, ice cream shops and restaurants. The pedestrian-only street is across from the river and a beautiful park, and is the busiest spot in town each night which makes it perfect for people watching.

Day 4: Osumi Canyon and Bogove waterfall

One of the best day trips from Berat is the wild, wet adventure through the Osumi Canyon (also known as Osum Canyon) which is a 90 minute drive from the city.

Osumi Canyon in Berat Albania

The ‘Grand Canyon of Albania’ boasts dramatic scenery, sweeping views of the Osumi Valley and thrilling activities on the water including rafting trips and canyoning.

Osumi Canyon in Berat Albania

Book a one day Osumi Canyon tour, which starts with a couple of sightseeing stops en route, then heads right to the base of the canyon. Prepare to get soaking wet as you hike for about an hour through the pristine gorge and swim in the azure water.

While the water is cold and the rocks underfoot can make it a challenge, the intense experience is unforgettable and absolutely stunning which makes this one of the best things to do in Albania.

On the way back to Berat, most groups stop at the cascading Bogove waterfall, which just so happens to be almost unbearably cold with a water temperature of six degrees celsius.

It takes about 20 minutes to hike along the dusty road through Tomorri Mountain National Park with some suspect bridge crossings, which is well worth it to see the breathtaking falls which are tucked away in a cluster of sandstone rocks and cascade into a turquoise pool.

Day 5: Gjirokaster

With architecture dating back to the Ottoman-era, a memorable historic centre and sweeping views from the hilltop fortress, the southern city of Gjirokastër is one of the best places to visit in Albania.

Gjirokaster, Albania

The ‘Stone City’ is a UNESCO site beloved for its outdoor bazaar and Ottoman-era homes. Narrow streets wind up to the imposing Gjirokastër Castle which dates back to the 12th century, and is perched more than 300 metres high.

Highlights include cannons tucked inside stone tunnels, a giant clock tower, lookout points that have a birds-eye view of the entire valley, and even a former US air force plane that was captured back in the 1950s.

Gjirokaster Castle

While some visitors are happy to spend a few days here exploring the maze of streets, Gjirokastër’s attractions are mostly centered around the historic old town which makes it possible to see the top spots in the city in just a few hours if time is tight.

It’s also the perfect pit stop while travelling between Berat and the Albanian Riviera.

Music thumps all day long at the beach clubs, the promenade is prime for people watching, and boats whisk visitors off to the surrounding islands and islets for a day of fun in the sun.

Saranda, Albania

The most popular beaches in the Albanian Riviera include Dhërmi, Himare, Borsh and Porto Palermo, which are a 1-2 hour drive from the city. From Shkoder city, you must drive for approximately 2 hours to get to Lake Koman. In Koman, you can board the Lake Koman Ferry boat.

The boat journey on Lake Koman is absolutely stunning. The lake is a bit like a long winding river, that turns and twists through the mountain landscape.

The Lake Koman ferry makes a 3-hour journey from the port of Koman to the port of Fierze. During the 3-hour journey, all you see is nature. The lake is surrounded by beautiful mountain cliffs.

Every time, the boat will travel towards a cliff and you think the lake will end, there is a turn in the river and a new landscape is revealed.

The Lake Koman ferry was not intended to be a tourist attaction. It was actually merely aimed at transportation for the locals.

However, the ferry journey was so beautiful that tourists from all over the world came to board the Lake Koman Ferry.

Bradt Guides even descibed the boat trip on Lake Koman as “one of the world greatest boat trips”.

The Cape of Rodon is one of the undiscovered, hidden gems that only the local people know about.

The cape is about a 1.5 hour drive from Tirana and it is an absolutely stunning natural sight. You must park the car, and hike along a hilly trail for about 45 minutes. But it is worth the effort!

At the end of the hiking trail, you stand on the top of a hill, which overlooks the Cape of Rodon. You get a top view of the gorgeous peninsula.

You can hike down the steep hill, to visit the ruins of the castle of Skanderbeg. The castle was built by Albania’s national hero, in an effort to have easy access to the sea. Of course, there are several coastal and beach locations close to Tirana city.

However, the Cape of Rodon is the most natural, untouched and magical coastal spot near the capital city!

Zvernec island is one of the most picturesque locations in Albania.

The island of Zvernec is a little island, which is located at a 20 minute drive from Vlore beach. Zvernec is connected to the mainland via a long wooden bridge.

From the coast, you have the most amazing view of the water, the wooden bridge and the island.

You can cross the wooden bridge to visit the little island. On the island, there is a little monastery, which was built during the 13th and 14th century, whilst Albania was a part of the Byzantine empire.

The island is actually very small, it is 430 meters long and 300 meter wide. And most of the island is covered in pine trees.

Zvernec is not a full-day trip experience. However, it is a great 30 minute stopover, which you can make on your way from Vlore to the beaches of the Albanian Riviera in the south!

8. Ksamil beach & Ksamil islands

Ksamil beach is a paradise! There are many beautiful beaches in the Albanian Riviera, but Ksamil beach is the most beautiful beach in Albania, without a doubt.

Therefore, Ksamil beach is called “the pearl of the Albanian Riviera”.

The beach of Ksamil is set on a little peninsula, in the ultimate south of Albania. The beach has perfect white sand. And the water of the Ionian Sea is turqoise blue and crystal clear. And there are little wooden shutters that lead into the sea.

But the highlight of Ksamil beach are the four little islands in the sea. The Ksamil islands are located very close to the coast. You can swim to the nearest island. Or you can rent a kayak or boat to peddle to the further islands.

All the islands are uninhabited and completly overgrown with lush nature. Of the four islands, the twin islands are the most interesting. These two little islands are connected to each other by a narrow strip of land.

Stay until the evening for a beautiful view of the sun going over the little islands!

9. Gjipe Beach

Gjipe beach is one of the most remote beaches in the Albanian Riviera. Because the beach is completely surrounded by high cliffs.

Since the beach itself is more difficult to reach than the other beaches of the Albanian Riviera, it is completely private and isolated!

Whereas most of the beaches of the Albanian Riviera can be reached by car. Getting to Gjipe requires a hike. Take the road from Vuno towards the village of Ilias and follow the signage. The last part of the road is unpaved and rocky. You must walk for about 20 minutes to reach the amazing beach of Gjipe.

Gjipe beach truly is a hidden paradise! Although it is a bit more difficult to reach, it might just be the perfect beach you were looking for.

Make sure you bring some food and drinks with you though, because this hidden beach does not provide any catering.

There is perfect golden sand and the incredible turqoise water, is calm and still. If you want to get away from Dhermi, it is the perfect place to enjoy a natural beach.

And even though, the Guardian ranked Drymades beach as the second most beautiful beach in Europe. And the Lonely Planet calls Drymades: “One of the more attractive beaches in the Albanian Riviera”. It is still quiet in the high season.

So if you find yourself in the Northern part of the Albanian Riviera, then Drymades beach should be on the top of your list!

12. The Mangalem district in Berat city

Berat is by far the most beautiful historical city in Albania. And the historical center of Berat is also a UNESCO Heritage Site.

The old town center of Berat was built on the slope of the hill. If you look upwards from the valley, you will see hundreds of little white houses that were built on the side of the hill.

That is why Berat is also called “the city of a thousand windows”. Because if you stand at the bottom of the hill, it literally feels like all the little windows look down at you.

The historical city center of Berat consists of two historical neighbourhoods: The Mangalem Quarter and the Gorica Quarter. Of the two neighbourhoods, the Mangalem Quarter is the highlight.

You can spend your morning exploring the Berat Castle on the top of the hill. And then take some free time to explore the historical city center by foot.

Insider tip: Go for lunch or dinner in the Gorica Quarter on the other side of the river. Because from the terraces in Gorica, you will have a stunning view of the river, the Mangalem Quarter and the Berat Castle.

tourist spots in albania

13. Mirror beach

Mirror beach is a small beach surrounded by cliffs in the South of Albania.

If you have researched the Albanian Riviera online, you have most definitely come accross Ksamil beach. Because Ksamil is called “the pearl of the Albanian Riviera”. Simply said, Ksamil is a paradise-like beach and without a doubt the most beautiful beach in Albania.

Mirror beach, on the other hand, is much less known. It is a small beach, which is completely surrounded by cliffs.

When you stand on the beach, you will see cliffs on either side and the waves come crashing towards the shore.

The beach is called Mirror beach, because the water of the sea looks like a gigantic mirror, as it reflects the sunlight. Needless to say, it is an absolute blast to watch the sun go down in the evening.

I am not saying that you should not visit Ksamil beach, because you absolutely should! However, if you find yourself in the high season and Ksamil beach is busy on the day you visit. You may want to spend some time at the nearby Mirror beach as well, so that you can enjoy some privacy too!

And Mirror beach gets raving reviews on Tripadvisor, so you do not have to take my word for it, simply read some reviews!

tourist spots in albania

14. The Grand Park in Tirana

The Grand Park in Tirana is one of the most beautiful places in the capital city. When people ask me about visiting Tirana city, I usually recommend a walking tour through the city center. Because it gives you a lovely overview of the landmarks and the history of Albania.

If you do decide to go for a walking tour of Tirana, I recommend you finish your tour at the Grand Park of Tirana.

There is a large artificial lake in the middle of the park, which gives you a stunning view of the surrounding park lands and neighbourhoods. Walk or go for a run along the water. Or enjoy a lazy cup of coffee, whilst staring accros the water.

Although the Grand Park is not a full-day trip or a destination in itself. It is the perfect ending to a day of exploring the capital city of Albania.

tourist spots in albania

15. Rana e Hedhun beach

Rana e Hedhun is a stunning beach in the North of Albania.

If you arrive at Tirana International Airport, you can either travel to the North of Albania or the South of Albania. The South of Albania is mostly known for the beautiful beaches of the Albanian Riviera. And the North of Albania is popular amongst hikers, who enjoy exploring the Albanian Alps.

However, even if you decide to visit the Albanian Alps, you can still enjoy an afternoon on the beach! There is no need to travel all the way to the South of Albania, in order to enjoy a few hours on the beach.

Rana e Hedhun is a gorgeous beach close to Shkoder city. Most hikers plan a 3-4 day round trip through the Albanian Alps, which starts and ends in Shkoder city. I recommend you plan 1 extra day in Shkoder, to explore the historical city center in the morning and to go to Rana e Hedhun beach in the afternoon.

Rana e Hedhun is also known as “Thrown Sand”. Because the beach is known for its large sand dune. You can climb the hill and slide down the sand dune towards the sea. Although there are some small restaurants along the shore, the beach still has a “beach village” feeling.

Avoid the nearby Shengjin beach, which has many hotels and resorts along the shore. And visit the beautiful beach instead.

tourist spots in albania

16. Butrint

Butrint is the most beautiful UNESCO Heritage Site in Albania. It is an archaeological park set on the little peninsula.

At Butrint, you can visit the ruins of an ancient city. Throughout history, Butrint was a Greek city, a Roman city, a bishopric, a part of the Venetian empire and a part of the Ottoman empire. As a result, in the park you can see ruins of each period of the cities development.

However, when I write about an archaeological park, sometimes people think it is only of interest to historians and archaeologists. Which is absolutely not true.

Yes, Butrint has stunning ruins. But it is the nature surrounding the ruins that makes this park something special.

The archaeological park is set on a little peninsula, which is overgrown with lush nature. And surrounding the peninsula, there is beautiful water of Lake Butrint and the Vivari channel.

Because of the unique combination of historical ruins and nature, everyone will enjoy a 2-hour visit to Butrint. And it is conveniently located near Ksamil beach, Saranda beach and the Blue Eye of Albania, so you can easily combine it with another destination!

tourist spots in albania

17. The Blue Eye of Albania, near Saranda

The Blue Eye of Albania is a magical spot.

Essentially, the Blue Eye of Albania is a fresh water spring. There is an underwater cave deep underneath the water. And the spring pumps fresh water to the surface of the river with an enourmous force.

The reason why this fresh water spring, became a touristic attraction, is its mesmerizing beauty.

The water of the spring is a bright blue colour. So bright in fact, that you won’t believe it is natural.

Moreover, the spring is called “The Blue Eye”, because it resembles a human eye. The underwater cave is the black pupil of a human eye. And the bright blue water is the iris of a human eye.

A fun fact is that nobody knows exactly, how deep the Blue Eye of Albania is. Numberous divers have tried to reach the bottom of the spring. However, this type of cave diving is extremely dangerous, because the diver has to swim against that enourmous water pressure. The Blue Eye is at least 50 meters deep, but nobody knows how much deeper…

For the adventurous people, you can jump into the spring from a platform at the top. And you will resurface immediately after, because the water pressure will push you up!

18. The springs of Drilon

The springs of Drilon are a beautiful touristic location near Lake Ohrid.

Lake Ohrid is a massive lake on the border of Albania and North Macedonia. On the Albanian side of the lake, you can visit the town of Pogradec, the village of Lin and the springs of Drilon.

The springs of Drilon are the origin of the Drin river, which flows into Lake Ohrid. This beautiful place is a well-known touristic resort amongst the Albanian people. Along the waterside, there are many decorative threes. And there is a little pond, which crosses to a tiny island.

It is a very pretty and peaceful location. And if you are in the area of Lake Ohrid, it is definitely worth a stopover.

tourist spots in albania

19. Jale beach

Jale beach is my personal favorite beach in the Albanian Riviera. And if the above picture has not convinced you, then I do not know what will…

Jale beach is a small beach in the middle of the Albanian Riviera. If you drive along the coastal road, you will find Jale between Dhermi beach and Himare beach.

The beach itself is a small bay facing the Ionian Sea. Amongst the locals, Jale beach is known as “the beach with the clearest water of the Albanian Riviera”.

On one side of the half-moon shaped bay, there is a little peninsula with a hotel overlooking the beach. This hotel was actually used during the communist regime by the party elite. And it is still functional as a hotel until this day!

Jale is also pupular for its campsides, where you can rent a tent near the beach.

Moreover, if you are in Jale, you can book a sailing, biking, canoe or hiking trip to the nearby Gjipe beach. Since Gjipe is complety surrounded by cliffs, you can peddle your way to this hidden beach, if you start from Jale beach!

tourist spots in albania

20. Porto Palermo and the Castle of Ali Pasha

Porto Palermo is a stunning sightseeing location in the Albanian Riviera.

In the middle of the Bay of Porto Palermo, you can visit a little peninsula. It is almost an island, but it is connected to the mainland via a narrow strip of land. On the peninsula, you can visit the Castle of Ali Pasha.

The Castle of Ali Pasha is trianglar shaped castle. The highlight is the rooftop deck, which gives you a panoramic view of the entire Bay of Porto Palermo.

Historians are devided over who actually built this triangular shaped castle. Although some Albanian history books say it was built by the Albanian governor “Ali Pasha” during the Ottoman empire. There are others, who believe it was built by the Venetians, since it has the same shape as the Venetian castle at Butrint.

It is of course possible that history was re-written during the communist period, because the Albanian Ali Pasha was a national hero, which fit the nationalistic promotion of the communist dictator.

Regardless of who built this castle, I definitely recommend a quick stop on route to the South of the Albanian Riviera. If only to take a stunning picture from the castle’s rooftop!

tourist spots in albania

21. The stunning view from the Llogara Pass

The Llogara Pass offers one of the most beautiful views in Albania.

The Llogara Pass is a viewpoint on the coastal road along the Albanian Riviera. All the beaches of the Albanian Riviera are located alongside the main coastal road. The coastal road starts at Vlore beach and it leads to Saranda beach in the South of Albania.

The Llogara Pass is the highest point on the coastal road. It has a height of 1043 meters above sea level.

When you drive from Vlore beach to the south, you will drive over the winding road to the Llogara Pass before you reach Dhermi beach.

From the Llogara Pass, you can see Dhermi beach, the Dhermi village and Palase beach. Moreover, you will have a stunning view of the Ionian Sea.

There is a lovely restaurant at the top of the pass, which has floor-to-ceiling windows, from where you can enjoy the view. It is great to plan a coffee break or a lunch at the restaurant on your way the south of Albania.

22. The Venice Art Mask Factory

The Venice Art Mask Factory is by far the most interesting place to visit in Shkoder city.

The Venice Art Mask Factory was started by Edmond Angoni. He is an Albanian man, who worked in Italy for many years, before returing home to Albania to start his studio.

The factory produces handicraft masks for the Venetian carnival. All the masks are hand-made by a series of artists. And they are one-of-a-kind.

The Venice Art Mask Factory has a reputation for producing high quality masks, which are exported and solt in shops all around the world.

Apart from the art studio, there is a mask showroom. In the showroom, you can see a large collection of Venetian masks. And if you like you can buy one of the masks as a souvenir to bring home.

Shkoder as a city is known for its artistic vibe and the Venice Art Mask Factory is one of the highlights.

23. Monastery beach

Monastery beach is one of the best kept secrets in Albania.

Monastery beach is a little beach located between Saranda beach and Ksamil beach. It is a part of the Albanian Riviera, but it is not a well-known beach.

Both Saranda beach and Ksamil beach are incredibly popular beaches. Saranda is the largest coastal city in the Albanian Riviera. Therefore, Saranda is also known as “the capital of the Albanian Riviera”. Ksamil beach is the most beautiful beach in the Albanian Riviera and known as “the pearl of the Albanian Riviera”.

However, both Saranda and Ksamil are busy and they attrack many tourists in the high season. Therefore, if you want to get away from the crowds in the high season, Monastery beach is a great option.

Monastery beach is secluded. The beach is surrounded by high cliffs on both sides. The best part of this beach is the isolation and privacy.

You can hike up the hill to the 14th century monastery of Saint George. From the hill, you have a stunning view of Monastery beach, the Ionian Sea and Lake Butrint.

And you do not have to make up your mind now. Because Monastery beach is conveniently located between Saranda and Ksamil. So if you find either beach too crowded, you can easily drive or take a taxi to the quieter Monastery beach.

24. Petrela village and Petrela Castle

Petrela Castle is a great place to visit for a day-trip from Tirana.

Petrela is a little village located very close to the capital city Tirana. From Tirana’s city center, it will only take you about 25 minutes to drive or take a taxi to Petrela.

Although Tirana and Petrela are close to each other, they are completely different worlds.

When you drive into the Petrela village, you will immediately fall in love with the romantic athmosphere. As you drive along the winding road, you will see Olive groves everywhere.

Along the road, there are little restaurants and mom-and-pop owned hotels. At the top of the hill, you can visit the Petrela Castle. The castle was built on the top of a large rock.

From the castle, you have the most amazing panoramic view of the valley, the little village and the hills.

The castle used to be a part of the defense of the national hero Skanderbeg. Skanderbeg was a military commander, who defended the Albanians against the invasion of the Ottoman Turks. Skanderbeg himself was based in the nearby Kruje Castle, but his sister Mamica was based in Petrela.

25. The Albanian Alps

If you enjoy visiting rough and untouched nature, then you must definitely visit the Albanian Alps.

The Albanian Alps are also known as the Accursed Mountains. The Alps are a large mountain range in the North of Albania.

The beauty of visiting the Albanian Alps is that they remain remote until this day. This is mainly due to the fact that this region is still relatively difficult to reach.

If you would like to visit the Theth mountain village in the Albanian Alps, you must book a four-wheel-drive taxi in Shkoder city. From Shkoder city, it takes roughly 3.5 hours to get to the Theth village.

Although the first part of the road to Theth has asphalt. The last hour of your journey, you will drive on a stoney dirt track.

However, it remoteness also is the beauty of the Albanian Alps. You can spend the night in an authenic guesthouse. And as you wander through the little villages of the Albanian Alps, it feels as though you are going back in time.

One of the main attractions is a day-hike accross the 1800 meter high Valbone Pass. This part of the mountains is so remote, that the only way to get from the Theth village to the Valbone village is by hiking the trail. There simply is no road connecting the two villages.

26. The view from Lekuresi Castle in Saranda

The Lekuresi Castle is a great place to visit, if you are staying in Saranda.

Saranda is the largest coastal city in the Albanian Riviera. The city’s hotels are built around the large bay.

To get an amazing view of the city of Saranda, you can drive up the steep road to Lekuresi Castle.

From the castle’s walls, you have a stunning panoramic view. On a clear day, you can see the entire city of Saranda, Corfu island, Ksamil beach and Butrint.

The castle was built by the Ottomans Turks in the 16th century, when they ruled over Albania. The main reason for building the castle was the strategic location. From the castle, the Ottomans could control the road to Butrint and protect their empire from attacks from Corfu island.

Although the castle itself is mostly in ruins, it is the view that makes this location worth visiting.

27. Grama Bay

Grama Bay is one of the most gorgeous and unspoiled beaches in the Albanian Riviera. Grama Bay is a part of the Karaburun Peninsula. Karaburun is a rocky peninsula that points into the sea between Vlore beach and Dhermi beach.

There are several hidden beaches along the peninsula of Karaburun, but Grama Bay is the absolute highlight without a doubt. Therefore, Grama Bay is also known as the “jewel of the Albanian Riviera”.

Grama Bay is a very remote beach. It can be reached by taking a boat from the Dhermi village. The boat trip costs roughly 150 euros, but it can accommodate 6 or 7 people. The only other way is hiking for 6 hours, however, you will need to hike through the remote and hilly terain. And you definitely need a good supply of drinking water.

Grama Bay is also known as “the Bay of Scripts”. Because Grama Bay provides shelter from the rough sea. Throughout history, sailers carmed inscriptions and symbols in the cliffs surrounding the bay, to give thanks to their gods.

Scholars have analyzed the inscriptions in the cliffs and found ancient, medieval Greek and Latin languages.

Visiting the Bay of Grama is absolutely worth it, however, it does require some proper planning to get to this hidden gem.

28. The endless view from Kruje Castle

Kruje Castle is a classic day-trip destination for tourists, who are staying in Tirana. Mostly because it is a beautiful sightseeing location, which is only a 45 minute drive from Tirana.

The Castle of Kruje is located on a hilltop and it has the most amazing view. From the castle, you can see the entire city of Tirana, several other villages, the valley, the mountain landscape, the Adriatic Sea and Durres beach.

Inside the castle, you can also visit the Skanderbeg Museum and the Ethnographic Museum. The Skanderbeg Museum is dedicated to Albania’s national hero Skanderbeg. He was a military commander, who reunited the Albanian tribes in a fight against the invasion of the Ottoman Turks. And in the Etnographic Museum, you get a unique insight in an Albanian family house.

There is also a lovely Bazaar market with handicraft items. And there is a variety of restaurants and coffee houses.

But by far the highlight of visiting Kruje is the endless view.

29. Pirate’s Cave

Close to Dhermi beach, you can get on a speed boat and visit the Pirate’s Cave.

This activity starts from Dhermi beach. You can get on a speedboat from Dhermi to the Pirate’s Cave, which costs 8 euros per person. Or you can buy a combined boat trip to the Pirate’s Cave and Gjipe beach for 2000 Lek (approximately 17 euros).

The Pirate’s Cave is a stunning location. The cave is located underneath the Saint Theodoros Rock. It is a sea cave, which can accommodate one small boat. The ceiling is high and there is a hole in the ceiling through which a little light enters the cave.

The Pirate’s cave is a beautiful location and based on the reviews on Tripadvisor it is one of the best things to do near Dhermi beach.

30. Driving along the coastal road

The coastal road between Vlore beach and Saranda beach is a stunning route. This is the main road that leads by all of the most beautiful beaches of the Albanian Riviera.

Be sure to plan some extra time, if you are driving along this road. Because from the turning and twisting road, you will have many stunning views of the beaches below.

Moreover, you will certainly want to get off the road to visit the little beaches below. Apart from beaches, you can also make a stop at the Llogara Pass, which is a high viewpoint. And you can visit the Castle of Ali Pasha, which is located on a little peninsula in the Bay of Porto Palermo.

All the larger beaches, like Dhermi beach, Jale beach, Himare beach and Borsh beach are clearly indicated. However, if you aiming to visit some of the smaller hidden coves, like Gjipe beach, Aquarium Bay or Drymades beach, you will need to bring a route description with you.

And finally, I do want to mention that you must be an experienced and confident driver in order to drive in Albania. Not all the Albanian drivers follow the rules of the road, so you will have to be extra alert to avoid an accident. If you doubt your driving skills in a foreign country in any way, please book a tour or a private driver.

How to Get to Albania

Tirana is Albania’s capital city and home to the country’s main international airport. It is well-connected from and to many major European cities. Tirana International Airport services popular airlines such as Alitalia, British Airways, EasyJet, Lufthansa, and the favoured budget airline of Wizz Air. Nonstop flights are regularly available within Europe from departure points such as London, Rome, Munich, Oslo, Paris, and Barcelona.

The bustling city of Tirana is a point of interest itself, but it is also a fantastic starting point for tourists keen on seeing the rest of the country. From Tirana, the gorgeous beaches of Himare and the mesmerizing mountains of Theth are both 3.5 hours away in opposite directions. Tirana is also the most convenient and economical place to rent a car for your Albania trip.

Arriving in Albania by ferry is mostly a suitable solution for visitors traveling with a car . Ferries to Albania arrive from Italy and Greece on a regular basis during the peak season. From Italy , it’s possible to take a car ferry to Albania from a few departure ports such as Ancona, Bari, and Brindisi along the east coast of Italy. Leaving Greece, the Corfu to Saranda ferry is a great way to experience Albania for a day or a weekend visit during a bigger trip to Corfu.

taking a ferry to albania

The idea of a Balkan road trip is growing on travellers looking to switch things up. After completing a few road trips throughout the Balkan countries ourselves, we can easily recommend it as one of the best destinations to tour by car in all of Europe. Since state borders are so close to each other, it makes visiting a handful of different countries possible within a short timeframe.

If you are road tripping to Albania from another Balkan country, border crossings tend to be more relaxed and quite similar to one another. Still, there are things to be mindful of. Double-check your navigation or GPS system for the actual border crossing point. You’ll want to make sure it’s an official border location which:

  • 1. Allows travel for non-residents of either country.
  • 2. Doesn’t lead through a secluded forest without a border station. We’ve unfortunately experienced both of these scenarios, which only caused us to lose time and forced us to backtrack.

For driving routes from or to the European Union from Albania, prepare for a lengthier process. Entering the EU typically means you’ll spend much longer at the border. Expect an extended customs, passport control, and security procedure.

is albania worth visiting

What Unexpected Things Should First Time Visitors to Albania Know?

1. cash is a must.

Coming from the U.S. or a Western European country, it may be second nature to pay with a card or Apple Pay. In Albania, you will not get far without cash. Even large hotels, restaurants, and transportation companies will not accept cards. To come prepared to Albania with local currency, ask your home bank for lek before arriving in Albania. Alternatively, you can exchange currency at an office in Albania or withdraw cash at an ATM. We personally opt for the latter as the fees and value are better than exchanging cash. If you are traveling on a budget, it’s worth your time to do the math before committing to an option.

2. You will see a lot of trash

For a few different but equally unfortunate reasons, Albania has a trash problem. It is a combination of the country’s government and residents’ overall approach towards garbage and its disposal or recycling solution (lack of). As tourists, it’s critical that we don’t contribute to the problem and do our best to improve it instead. We strongly hope that for the sake of Albania’s future in tourism, attention to the matter will at some point, be prioritized.

3. Albanian cuisine is really good

The food in Albania is on par with Greek dishes made famous all over the world yet it holds its own flavor and distinctness. Albania still maintains the traditional classics found throughout neighbouring Balkan states such as the burek. However, it is additionally influenced by outside cultures including Italy and Turkey. Above all, the food in Albania is real and comparable to the Mediterranean diet in regard to emphasis on seafood, in-season vegetables, and fruit.

4. Can’t speak Albanian? Try Italian

The Albanian language is difficult to grasp and is different from the South Slavic dialects that you would hear in most Balkan countries. Luckily, there is another option to successfully communicate while visiting Albania, in addition to English. In the wake of historical ties between the two countries, as well as the geographical proximity, Italian is widely spoken among Albanian citizens. We have had countless experiences (mostly with the older generation) where English was not a possibility, but Italian was. The younger Albanian citizens continue to be influenced by Italian culture through TV shows, movies, and the Italian media shown in Albania.

5. Is Albania Safe?

With Americans in particular, Albania has received an undeservedly bad reputation. We can unfortunately confirm this negative opinion because while traveling within Albania during peak season, we hardly heard any American English. Most tourists currently traveling to Albania are from Europe. For many Westerners, one of the main reasons for hesitancy to visit Albania is simply the fear of the unknown . We hope that with resources such as ours and maybe with the help of Croatia’s PR team, Albania will soon appeal to visitors worldwide.

Like with nearly every nation, Albania isn’t perfect. If you want a fairy tale destination where nobody steps a toe out of line, head to the Netherlands instead. While visiting Albania, you should exercise common sense and remove yourself from petty theft situations. This includes not flashing expensive items in public and keeping your belongings in sight. In short, don’t leave a purse on the front seat of a car while you’re at the beach and then blame the country for it being stolen. Negative scenarios like these also tend to happen in bigger cities where there are crowds. We have walk around towns, rural areas and secluded village streets at night in Albania. Never did we feel unsafe or at risk.

What Is the Best Way to Travel Around Albania?

In the map below, you’ll see that many of Albania’s best things to do and see aren’t consolidated in one area. If you’re planning a grand tour of the entire country, the best way to do this is by car. Whether it’s your own car or a rental car, driving will allow you to see both Albania’s hidden gems and top tourist attractions . As a slight caution, driving in Albania is a colorful experience and not recommended for inexperienced drivers. Still, this warning can be brought up in other countries like Italy and France, so take it with a grain of salt. A majority of the European tourists we see in Albania are driving rental cars, so it is very common.

→ 🚗 Find cheap rental cars in Albania ←

  • Aggressive drivers – They exist all over the world, and Albania is no exception. If someone is tailgating you, do not provoke them or speed up. Maintain your speed and let them pass. It is also recommended to ignore any hostile honking situations so you don’t engage in making a situation worse.
  • Animals in the streets – You’ll frequently see stray dogs and farm animals on the side of the road or even in the middle. Always keep an eye out for potential obstacles.
  • Unpaved roads – Unexpected gravel or dirt roads tend to show up out of nowhere, and your navigation won’t differentiate these from paved roads. Do your best to determine if a road is actually manageable for the type of car you are driving before embarking on a journey.
  • Curvy and narrow roads – While driving in the Albanian mountains, roads are mostly narrow and curvy with little or poorly maintained barriers. If you feel nervous while driving in the opposite direction of another car, slow down or pull over.

Rural Streets of Albania

Travelers like backpackers who may have the luxury of time, it is possible to explore Albania by hitchhiking and public transportation. The primary bus system in Albania is not as straightforward as something you’d find in Western Europe, but it’s not entirely out of reach. For locals, it’s very common to rely on furgons, which are Albanian minibuses and the most affordable form of public transportation. Although it’s the less expensive option, getting around by furgons in Albania will cost you time. Naturally, it will take longer to get places, and you’ll have to follow the timetables that may or may not have a rhyme or reason.

The best way to confirm the timetables for buses and furgons in Albania is at bus terminals directly. Terminals are usually only found in frequented cities (Tirana, Vlora, Durres, Saranda, Berat, Gjirokaster, etc.) and can be found with a Google Maps search or by asking a local resident.

traveling in albania without a car

Whenever we bring up going to Albania in a conversation, people often ask, “Did you go to Sarande and Ksamil?” Even for people who have never visited the country, these are typically the two most popular places in Albania that will get brought up. Most tourists will head to Albania to experience its coastline and have a holiday by the sea, so this common reaction is completely justified.

From the surface, the Albanian Riviera and beautiful beaches are definitely the country’s most prized possessions. Furthermore, visitors tend to choose a summer vacation in Albania because of its value. Although prices are quietly and slowly increasing, going to Albania instead of Greece is very popular among people looking for a more affordable beach destination.

For a different set of interests, Albania attracts many people to its northern mountains. Theth National Park and Valbone Valley are magnificent and frequented attractions in Albania for those looking to get their hike on and immerse themselves in the country’s natural beauty. The great thing about these national parks is how wild they’ve remained. So although they are certainly not a secret in Albania, they don’t feel like they’re overrun by tourists even for being so favoured.

Whether you’re a dedicated self-guided traveler or not, taking guided tours is sometimes the only way to truly experience a certain place. Take the historic Ottoman town of Berat, for example. Passed down through generations, stories and legends are facts and details that a typical tourist may never know unless we learn them from the source. We typically depend on two online resources for locally guided tours: Viator and GetYourGuide . This also allows you to book in advance, which is ideal for those who like to plan ahead and know what they’re in for.

Albania Hidden Gems

1. visit lin, one of the oldest villages in europe.

The small village of Lin is situated on a peninsula along the shores of Lake Ohrid. Only a third of Lake Ohrid belongs to Albania, but Lin is unquestionably one of the most significant historic locations in the country and even continent. Research and discoveries have found Lin to be part of the oldest settlement in Europe, around 8,500 years old .

Lin, Albania, continues to be an important site for archaeology, and a hotspot for researchers. As recently as August 2023, scientists uncovered an ancient town believed to have existed on stilts, just underneath the water’s surface outside of Lin. For visitors, stopping in Lin is a charming and quiet experience as it has managed to stay out of the spotlight for most tourists.

2. Take a Dip in the Thermal Baths Near Përmet

The city of Përmet is a lesser-known town in Albania and a quiet destination in and of itself. However, just 20 minutes from Përmet is the municipality’s most popular attraction, the Benja Thermal Baths (Llixhat e Bënjës). Among the exquisite natural landscape is Kadiut Bridge, an ancient Ottoman-era bridge completing the dreamy scene. The baths are located at a wide opening of the Langarica Canyon where the waters eventually run down into the Aoos (Vjosa) River. Visitors come to experience the healing powers commonly known in mineral-rich thermal waters . Llixhat e Bënjës is a magnifacent natural outdoor spa , and the best part is, it’s completely free to visit! If you are visiting in the summer, don’t expect the site to be without crowds. Experiencing the Benja Thermal Baths near sunset is recommended as most people (especially families) will begin to head home.

3. Combine Beach and City Life in Vlorë

Most people will consider the Albanian Riviera to begin in the northern city of Vlorë and end down in Ksamil. With beach seekers racing south, Vlorë is often overlooked as a destination itself. The third most populated city in Albania is home to a bustling and modern metropolitan area, crawling with trendy cafes, restaurants, and a charming Old Town neighborhood. Along the coastline is where you’ll find a lively pedestrian promenade and quintessential beach culture. The beaches near Vlorë are particularly sought after because they are some of the few in Albania that are sandy. Vlorë is a perfect option for travellers in search of the ideal beach vacation combined with a vibrant city life.

4. Float Down the Vjosa River

Albania’s extraordinary beaches and coastline can be talked about for hours. What isn’t praised enough are Albania’s rivers. Although there are many that flow through different parts of the country, the one that stands out is the Aoos (also known as the Vjosa River) that flows through Gjirokaster County. The river is particularly noteworthy as it comprises the Vjosa Wild River National Park, the first-ever national park of its kind in Europe . Furthermore, it is known to be the last significant wild river on the continent, outside of Russia.

Aside from simply soaking in the beauty of the majestic river, it’s a fantastic place to go swimming and have some good old-fashioned fun. Along the river, we saw many groups of locals floating down the Vjosa where the current was strong enough. One of the best hidden gems in Albania is this spot in particular , which includes a tranquil pool of spring water tucked away behind the trees.

5. Hike to the Top of the Bovilla Reservoir

Lake Bovilla is an enormous reservoir and one of the best day trips from Tirana, which is only about 20 km (12 miles) away. The reservoir is nestled at the bottom of two mountain ranges and has an unmistakable bright turquoise color . Functionally, the Bovilla Reservoir is crucial to the country’s capital, as it provides drinking water to most of the county.

Whether you visit Bovilla Lake for hiking, for a scenic picnic, or for the extraordinary view, it’s certainly one of the best-kept secrets near Tirana and in all of Albania. The most accessible panoramic viewpoint of Bovilla can be seen here . It is possible to reach the majority of this route by car, even a normal car, if you don’t want to hike. From Bovilla Restaurant , you can also walk up a set of stairs along the mountainside. This attraction is brand new as of 2023, but there are plenty of signs in the area for easy directions.

⛰ If you’re into off-roading (like us!), it’s possible to reach Bovilla Reservoir via Hida Road, beginning in Kruje . The road is not rocky, but it isn’t paved either, so it’s advisable to have a 4×4 vehicle. Along this route, you’ll come across several picturesque waterfalls, scenic viewpoints, and wildlife if you’re lucky!

6. Wander the Old Bazaar of Korçë

Just 30 minutes west of the border with Greece is the Albanian city of Korçë. It may not seem like it based on the surrounding fertile land, but Korçë stands at almost 900 meters above sea level. Reaching Korçë is also a bit of a foggy experience because it’s so isolated in the southeast corner of Albania. There are no nearby cities of the same size, only tiny villages. So, it feels like you are finding a metropolis in the middle of nowhere. Upon reaching Korçë, you are hit with a wave of energy as the city is very dense.

Korçë seems to go unnoticed by mass tourism, and frankly, this is what makes it so lovely. Regardless, the town is vibrant, holds a strong artistic heritage, and has plenty of things to see and do. Possibly the most well-known attraction in Korçë is the old bazaar quarter, which honestly feels like a movie set . Stroll through during the day, and you’ll find small shops selling handmade crafts, vintage rugs, and woodworking masterpieces. At night, the old town transforms into a trendy hub for bars and outdoor seating under string lights. The entire town feels untouched by all the negative aspects of tourism and is simply delightful to visit.

7. Experience Paradise in Porto Palermo

Ksamil this and Ksamil that. Personally, we believe there are many other beaches on the Albanian Riviera that are more beautiful than the southernmost end. Porto Palermo in the Himare municipality is undoubtedly one of the most underrated areas to enjoy the coast. You will not find a large half-moon stretch of beach or endless rows of umbrellas for rent in Porto Palermo. Instead, the bay is home to a handful of smaller beaches, all sharing the same pristine, clear water and with the absence of loud beach clubs.

Taking accessibility, cleanliness, and quality of water into consideration, Porto Palermo Beach, located here , is by far one of the best beaches along the Riviera. It is especially rare to see such a gem without paid umbrellas and sun beds – the entire beach is public and includes one small restaurant behind it. For adventurers eager to visit something more secluded, a hike (or off-road trip) to Mateus Beach is in order. By all definitions, this beach is perfect and truly a slice of paradise. With looks alone, it tops the list for the best beaches in Albania. Mateus Beach is also a wild and public beach , which means it’s undisturbed nature at its finest.

8. Step Back Into Time in the Cold War Tunnel

The marvelously preserved historic center of Gjirokastër is worth visiting for a number of reasons, including its hilltop castle and old-town bazaar. While the sparkle of ancient cobblestone streets and cute storefronts is easy to fall for, Gjirokastër has another attraction that often gets left off the traditional itinerary. In correlation with the endless supply of bunkers you’ll see across Albania, the then-dictator went completely overboard by building a sanctuary tunnel underneath Gjirokastër Castle .

The system of below ground tunnels was designed to only house important members of the state government in response to a potential attack. It’s a quirky, educational, and affordable activity that’s also a convenient way to cool you down if you’re visiting during the hot summer. Tours of the Cold War tunnel are all guided and leave every hour. For less than €5, you’ll learn extensive details and facts about the attraction from one of the guides.

9. Learn About Traditions at an Agritourism Stay

People who are interested in visiting Albania and want to leave with a little understanding from the people themselves will appreciate an agritourism stay. We had this experience as one of our last stops in Albania and it was quite possibly our most memorable. Agriculture, cultivation and even styles of cooking are important forms of maintaining a cultural heritage .

A great example in Albania is a tradition that’s performed in nearly every rural household – the production of raki . From what we were told by multiple Albanians, it’s something every family in the countryside does on their own. Traditional preparation of meat and similar dishes is also a wonder to learn more about while in Albania. During our agritourism stay at Lahuta e Vjetër Agroturizëm , we were lucky enough to join the oldest members of the family as they prepared a carnivorous feast over hot coals and with modest handcrafted pans.

10. Find the Best Mussels of the Butrint Lagoon

Behind Ksamil village and its frenzied tourist population lies Lake Butrint, also known as Butrint Lagoon. It is a saltwater body of water faintly connected to the Ionian Sea by a narrow channel within Butrint National Park. Although the lagoon is recognized as a wetland and is home to a diverse range of flora and bird species, it is more renowned for its mussel farming. The Mediterranean mussel thrives exceptionally well in the ideal conditions of Lake Butrint, making it the most delicious delicacy to savor while in Ksamil.

Along with guided mussel boat tours , there are a few notable places on the lake where you can enjoy some of the freshest mussels you’ll find in Albania. The Mussel House and King Mussel Taverna are both located on the northern end of the lagoon and are really great options. Personally, we thoroughly enjoyed a much humbler experience at Restaurant Kalivoj . The restaurant is also beautifully located on a tranquil beach that’s virtually empty—a hidden paradise away from the busy coastline just next door.

11. Cool Off at the Cold Water Nature Monument

Whether you make this a pit stop or point of interest, visiting this nature site is definitely one of the most unknown things to do in Albania. In many parts of Albania, it’s not advised to drink water from the tap. When you finally reach an area where it’s not only safe but has ice-cold fresh water flowing from the hills, it’s worth a stop!

The surrounding landscape and nature are purely splendid. Throughout the site, you’ll find waterfalls and serene riverfront beaches . If you have the time, head down to the river by Uji i Ftohtë Hotel and take a dip in the crisp waters of the stream. Along the main road is where you’ll also find countless small shops selling local products. Compared to the mass-produced tourist key chains, opt for a jar of honey to take home as a souvenir instead.

Popular Albania Tourist Attractions

Often deemed “the town of a thousand windows,” the central Albanian city of Berat is famously known for its Ottoman-era architecture buildings and the white-washed optical perspective they create. Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is undeniably one of the most gorgeous inland destinations in Albania. In addition to the town’s overall visual appeal, Berat offers several tourist spots to explore, including a historic quarter, ancient mosques, churches, and bridges. The most famous attraction in the town is the Berat Castle and its castle grounds, perched on the hilltop.

2. Albanian Riviera and Llogara Pass

If you are headed to the Albanian Riviera from Tirana or the northern part of the country, you will luckily take one of the most scenic routes without even thinking about it. In order to reach the best beaches in Albania that begin at Dhermi, you must drive through the Llogara Pass. It is a narrow and curvy motorway, dramatically towering over the coastline below. As you pull over to one of the handful of picture perfect viewpoints along the pass, is only when you realise how vertical of a road you are navigating. As a gateway to the Riviera, Llogara Pass does a great job welcoming you to its collection of gorgeous beaches.

Most people visiting Albania in the summer are there for one reason – the celebrated Albanian Riviera. It doesn’t take much convincing to experience any of Albania’s breathtaking beaches and swim spots along the southern coastline. Some of our personal favorite beaches in Albania include Gjipe Beach , Himare Beach, Porto Palermo Beach, and Borsh Beach.

3. Rozafa Castle in Shkodër

Similar to Lake Ohrid, Shkodra Lake in northern Albania is also shared with another country. At the base of the lake is Shkoder, the first major Albanian city you’ll come across after entering the country from Montenegro. Balancing on top of a hill and at the end of a cobble stone path is the castle and museum. Rozafa Castle comes with an intriguing and particularly dark legend , one that you can learn much about during a modest €4 visit. Entering the castle near sunset is recommended as the best time in order to catch a panoramic view of the lake and city with a golden filter.

The prominent and culturally rich town of Kruje that was once home to an ancient Illyrian tribe is only 40 km north of Tirana. As a symbol of national pride, Kruje is well-known for being the home of Skanderbeg, Albania’s state hero and military commander from the 1400s who led the fight against Ottoman rule. More currently, the lovely town of Kruje is where you’ll find one of the oldest bazaars in Albania . The charming cobblestone alleys filled with kiosks, merchants, and hidden treasures are incredibly picturesque and impossible to deny for tourists. At the top of Kruje’s bazaar streets is the Castle of Kruja which includes an ethnographic museum and sweeping views out to the sea.

5. Theth and Valbona National Park

As much attention as Albania’s beaches receive, the national parks of Theth and Valbona Valley are equally famous. There are many reasons to visit Albania’s national parks as there’s something to enjoy outdoors for everyone from reaching high peaks to admiring wild flowers. One of the most popular activities is hiking from Theth to Valbona , which requires an entire day to trek the 19 km. For avid hikers, it’s not particularly a difficult journey but regardless, worth the expedition’s labor. Jaw-dropping views of the Accursed Mountains (also known as the Albanian Alps) greet you around every turn.

If you don’t feel like breaking a sweat, you can still relish in the national parks without hiking. Charming traditional guesthouses are the perfect nature getaway for anyone who prefers to immerse themselves in the mountains rather than the sea. Quite often, accommodations in Theth and Valbone offer off-roading and 4×4 transportation or tours , which are convenient ways to explore without lifting a finger.

6. Gjirokaster

Most notably known for being one of Albania’s two UNESCO -listed cities, Gjirokastër is best described as magical. For starters, its geographical location cannot be beaten as it’s situated at the bottom of a mountain base with views of another mountain on the horizon. Gjirokastër’s historic quarter is the city’s most charming neighborhood and features a bazaar district that thrives throughout the day and well into the evening as bars liven up the night. This entire area is located at an angle along the hill’s slope, which makes walking through Gjirokastër somewhat challenging, particularly with young children who may tire easily. A few of the best attractions in Gjirokastër’s old town include:

  • Castle of Gjirokastra
  • Gjirokastra Bazaar
  • Zekate House and Skenduli House
  • Ethnographic Museum
  • Gjirokastër Obelisk
  • The Cold War Tunnel

7. The Blue Eye(s)

Albania is home to two attractions that are famously known as “The Blue Eye.” Both locations can be described as sheltered bodies of water resembling a natural pool with an intense blue color. The first “Blue Eye Kaprre” is found near Theth and requires an hour long hike to visit it. This is possibly the reason why this Blue Eye is much more enjoyable as it welcomes only those willing to trek the 2 km to reach it. By car, you can park here for around €3 and access the nature trail until you reach the crystal-clear mountain waters .

The Blue Eye in southern Albania is widely visited and popular among tourists who are visiting the resort towns of Saranda and Ksamil. Although you still must walk to the lagoon, it is not a hike by any means, and there are even electric scooters you can rent to get you there quicker. Directly near the Blue Eye, you’ll come across restaurants, bars, and souvenir shops, which clearly indicate this site to be a major tourist attraction. Entrance to the Blue Eye in Saranda costs around €0.50 for the day, an insignificant amount to experience one of Albania’s most remarkable natural wonders .

Sarande Nearby Rivers

Most of Albania’s beaches are made of pebbles or rough sand. It isn’t until you reach the southern end of the Albanian Riviera that you are in the presence of that idyllic soft sand that most people are after. Highly attributed to this reason, Ksamil is unquestionably the top beach destination in Albania.

Commonly known as Ksamil village, the area is also very unique in the way it’s set up. Opposed to long stretches of beaches which are typical between Dhermi and Sarande, Ksamil is instead comprised of 30-40 private beach inlets . Naturally, these sandy beach areas are considerably smaller, but they are all privately owned and operated by individual beach bars. The highly rated clubs are absolutely divine to visit because since they are paid, they’re very well taken care of. For the type of beach vacationer seeking an all-inclusive (and slightly luxe) experience , Ksamil is the one and only destination in Albania.

9. Butrint National Park

Just 20 km north of the Greek border is Butrint National Park. The park is not only one of Albania’s most impressive archaeological sites but also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is comprised of well-preserved ruins of an ancient city, a Venetian tower, Roman baths, an ancient theater, and much more. A visit to the park can easily occupy an entire afternoon and is suitable for kids of all ages. Our toddler particularly enjoyed the turtles poking their heads out of the ponds.

The archaeological site is believed to have roots dating back to the 10th and 8th centuries BC, indicating the presence of civilization during that time. Naturally, it even became a Roman settlement after Julius Caesar discovered ancient Butrint and recognized its potential. To visit Butrint National Park, the entrance fee for adults is around €10, and tickets do not need to be purchased in advance or online.

10. Camping on Gjipe Beach

If camping on a beautiful, wild beach is on your travel bucket list, consider it done by visiting Albania’s Gjipe Beach. Situated at the mouth of Gjipe Canyon, it is one of the most extraordinary beaches in the country. During your hike down to the beach, you’ll immediately be swept away by phenomenal views of the deep blue water below. To properly immerse yourself among nature and have a no-frills experience during your trip to Albania, camping right on the beach is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

The campsite situated at Gjipe Beach allows travelers to rent complete setups, which means you don’t have to be a backpacker with your own gear. For around €12 per person, Gjipe Eco Campground provides a place to sleep in addition to a traditional Albanian breakfast. Camping on Gjipe Beach hits the mark for anyone interested in a unique and offbeat activity to include on your Albanian itinerary.
