How to Fold and Store T Shirts

T-shirts are by far the most commonly worn type of shirt on the planet. That means that we often have a lot of them, making them hard to store.

In this article we’ll review 7 ways to fold a t-shirt. Then, after briefly talking about hanging t-shirts, we’ll give our recommendations for storing t-shirts in a drawer and packing t-shirts for travel .

Folding T-Shirts with the Basic Fold

This is the fold you probably already use unless you follow the “bachelor system”– clean clothes get piled on a chair and dirty clothes go on the floor. If that sounds like you, now’s a great time to change.

Lay your shirt on a flat surface.

Basic fold 1

Fold the shirt in half so that the sleeves overlap.

Basic fold 2

Fold both of the sleeves over on top of the shirt.

Basic fold 3

Starting from the bottom of the shirt and going to the collar, fold the tee in half.

Basic fold 4

Fold in half again.

Basic fold 5

A completed simple fold

Basic fold 6

This is perhaps the most basic way to fold a tee.

Ranger Roll a T-Shirt

The ranger roll is a folding method used by military units around the world. You can ranger roll just about any item of clothing. Here is how to ranger roll your t-shirts.

Flip the bottom 3-4 inches of your shirt inside out to form a cuff.

Ranger roll 1

Fold the shirt vertically until the end of the sleeve reaches the opposite shoulder seam.

Ranger roll 2

Do the same thing with the other side.

Ranger roll 3

Then fold the sleeve back on top of itself to make a neat vertical column shape.

Ranger roll 4

Now, you’re ready to roll your shirt, starting from the top (the collar).

Ranger roll 5

Keep the roll nice and tight to maximize the space saving effect of this method.

Ranger roll 6

Flip it over, and tuck the shirt into the pouch you created in the first step.

Ranger roll 7

A completed ranger roll. That wasn’t very hard!

Kondo Folding T-Shirts

Remember the Kondo sock fold we talked about in a previous article? Marie Kondo also devised a clever way to fold t-shirts. Here’s how t-shirts according to her method:

Lay the shirt on a flat surface.

Fold over the left right side of the shirt until the edge touches the middle.

Kondo fold 1

Fold the right sleeve back on top of itself.

Kondo fold 2

Repeat with the left side of the shirt.

Kondo fold 3

Fold the shirt in half (top to bottom). Leave about 3 inches on the bottom exposed.

Kondo fold 5

Now fold from the bottom to the middle of the shirt.

Kondo fold 6

Fold the bottom up towards the collar.

Kondo fold 7

A completed Kondo fold. The advantage of the Kondo fold is that shirts can stand on their sides.

Kondo fold 8

This is a great space-saving technique!

How to Fold T-Shirts With a Panel

Ever wonder how to fold a tee shirt like a pro ? This is how many clothing store clerks fold tee shirts before being displayed.

For this method you’ll need a cardboard or sturdy plastic panel that has roughly the same surface area as a sheet of paper. You can trace a sheet of paper on a cardboard box and cut out a template. Alternatively, you could use a plastic 2-pocket folder.

Panel fold 1

Place the panel on top of the shirt centered just below the collar.

Panel fold 2

Fold the left side of the shirt to the right.

Panel fold 3

Fold the right side of the shirt to the left.

Panel fold 4

Fold the bottom of the shirt to the top as far as you can.

Panel fold 5

Slide out the panel.

Panel fold 6

A completed panel fold.

Panel fold 7

This method makes it easy to avoid wrinkles!

How to Quickly Fold T-Shirts

This is the fastest way to fold a t-shirt. I learned the quick fold method from a video created by Antonio Centeno over at RMRS .

Folding on a solid surface is especially helpful for this fold.

Start by laying your t-shirt on a hard, flat surface.

Quick fold 1

With your right hand, pinch the top left side of the shirt about 2 inches down from the collar.

Quick fold 2

Now with your left hand, pinch the middle left side of the shirt.

Quick fold 3

With your right hand still holding the top of the shirt, cross over your left hand and pinch the bottom hem of the shirt about 2 inches from the left side.

Quick fold 4

At this point, your arms should be crossed. While still holding the shirt in both hands, uncross your arms.

Quick fold 5

Turn the shirt over to the back side of the shirt.

Quick fold 6

Fold the shirt over to the front.

Quick fold 7

A finished “speedy folded” t-shirt.

Quick fold 8

While this method takes some practice initially, soon you’ll be able to fold a t-shirt in seconds!

How to Fold T-Shirts Standing Up

All of the folds we’ve talked about so far require a flat solid surface to perform properly.

What if you don’t have a flat place readily available to use for folding (e.g. you don’t want to clear off the top of your dresser)?

This is where our next fold comes in.

Pick up the t-shirt.

Standing fold 1

Turn the shirt horizontally.

Standing fold 2

Bring both hands together to fold the shirt in half.

Standing fold 3

With the shirt folded in half, rest the shirt on your chest.

Standing fold 4

Slide your hands halfway down the shirt.

Standing fold 5

Folding away from your body, fold the shirt in half again.

Standing fold 6

A completed standing fold.

The standing fold allows you to neatly fold your shirts anywhere.

Hanging T-Shirts

After you’ve found the perfect t-shirt and have bought a few, you have to figure out how you’ll store them.

Hanging up your t-shirts is the easiest option if you have a lot of closet space.

Hanging t shirts

Nothing complicated here. Just make sure you avoid using wire hangers if possible because they can damage your shirts.

Storing T-Shirts in a Drawer

If you don’t have a big closet (or if your closet is full) you’ll probably want to store your t-shirts in a drawer.

In my opinion, the Kondo fold is the best method for storing t-shirts in a drawer. It allows you to stand shirts up on their sides, allowing you to easily see all of your tees with one glance.

Storing t shirts in drawer

Unless you pack too many shirts in a drawer, this method also helps you to avoid wrinkles because it is a pretty loose fold. You can also ranger roll t-shirts for drawer storage, but this can make it more difficult to tell different shirts apart.

Packing T-Shirts for Travel

When packing t-shirts for a trip, the ranger roll should be your go-to option because it allows you to fold shirts compactly.

Storing t shirts in duffel bag

You’d be surprised how much space you can save with this method!

Final Words on Folding Tees

There are many different ways to fold t-shirts. Spend just a few minutes practicing these methods the next time you do your laundry and soon you’ll be folding like a pro!

Personally, I prefer the panel/retail folding method, but I go a step further and fold the shirt in half to help economize storage space. You don’t need a panel/board for this method, but it does help to keep things neat and uniform.

I’m not a big fan of the quick-folding method, which I first discovered in a Japanese YouTube video circa 2006. Although you can fold a shirt quickly, and it makes an impressive YouTube video, in my personal experience, I’ve found the fold comes apart when moved and isn’t practical for daily use.

Another standing up folding method is one that’s similar to the panel/retail fold: You hold the T-shirt with the back facing you, the top at the top. Grip with both thumbs and index fingers the preferred width, and swing the other fingers on both hands towards you leading with the pinkies. Then, use one of the pinkies to clamp the folds as the shirt is rotated to face you. Re-grip and then shake the shirt a little to help set the fold and get any wrinkles out. With one hand holding the top of the shirt, fold the shirt up from the bottom to the top using your other hand (optional: fold the bottom 2-3 inches first before folding to the top). You can also hold the shirt with the top hand against the body if that’s easier. If desired, the shirt can be folded in half for more compact storage.

This post was last updated on

So, you’re heading on a trip, eh? But, you’re wondering how to fold clothes for travel so you maximize your space.

There are plenty of folding methods, but you want to ensure your clothes stay wrinkle-free and tightly compact.

Well, you’ve come to the right place.

This post will show you exactly how to fold clothes for traveling so you can have one less worry before your trip.

Let’s get into it.

Is it better to roll or fold clothes in a suitcase?

There is no conclusive answer to this, but most travelers tend to favor rolling clothes over folding them.

There are multiple reasons for this:

  • Reduce wrinkles
  • Save slightly more space
  • Easy to organize

Also, it doesn’t just have to be for a suitcase. Whether you use a suitcase, a travel backpack , or another piece of luggage, the method will stay the same.

So, if you’re wondering how to fold clothes for travel to save space, you should use a rolling method.

How do you tightly roll clothes for travel?

The best way to tightly roll your clothes for travel is the following:

  • Lay your clothing on a flat surface
  • Spread it out evenly and brush out wrinkles
  • As you roll, pull the opposite side away from you to make sure your clothing stays tight
  • Use rubber bands to make your rolled clothing even tighter

If you follow these simple steps, you’ll save a TON of space in your bag.

How to fold clothes to save space for travel

So, each piece of clothing will have its method, so we’ll break this down by each article of clothing:

  • Shorts/Pants/Dresses
  • Underwear and socks

How to fold shirts

Most of this will depend on the weather you’re traveling into, but the process will stay the same.

There are three easy steps to follow:

  • Fold up the bottom of the shirt and fold the sleeves in
  • Fold each side of the shirt toward the middle
  • Roll and seal

Step 1: Fold up the bottom of the shirt and fold the sleeves in

First, find a flat surface and spread your shirt across it. Make sure to spread it out as far as possible and get any wrinkles out.

This ensures your shirt stays wrinkle-resistant while it’s packed.

Next, fold the bottom of the shirt up about 6-8 inches. Make sure it’s on each side because this will keep your shirt tight and rolled up.

Next, fold each sleeve over toward the shirt’s middle. Once you do this, the shirt should form a rectangle, and no other pieces of the shirt should be sticking out.

Step 2: Fold each side of the shirt toward the middle

Next, take half of the shirt and fold it horizontally, so the edge meets in the center of the shirt.

Do the same thing with the opposite side. Both sides should meet in the center of the shirt.

Step 3: Roll and seal

Then, flip the shirt so your hands are where the neck of the shirt is, and start rolling toward the bottom, which you have folded.

Make sure to keep your rolling tight, and pull on the end of the shirt, so it doesn’t bunch up too much.

Once it’s fully rolled, flip the rolled bottom of the shirt out, so it wraps around the rest to create a small cocoon.

And that’s it! This works for every type of shirt you have.

If it’s a dress shirt or a long-sleeve shirt, simply fold the arm up over itself so you can fold it in when necessary.

Doing this is the best way how to fold clothes neatly for travel.

How to fold shorts/pants/dresses

Pants naturally take up a bit more space. But, it ultimately depends if you’re packing shorts, dresses, or pants.

Let’s break each of these down.

How to fold shorts

Shorts are extremely easy to pack. And depending on the size, you may be able to roll them up quickly without any methods.

But, if they’re a bit larger, here’s a great way to roll them.

Start by flipping the waistband down about 4-5 inches (if possible).

Next, flip one pant leg over the other, and begin rolling up from the bottom of the pant leg.

Lastly, flip the waistband over the rolled shorts once it’s rolled up to keep them tight. I usually add a rubber band around my shorts to stay put.

How to fold pants

The process is simple for pants. Lay your pants out on a flat surface like the floor.

Next, fold one pant leg over the other. About halfway up the top pant leg, angle it at about 90°.

Then, start rolling up from the bottom of the pant leg toward the waist. The pant leg you angled will be sticking out.

Last, fold the pant leg you left unrolled over the pants to ensure your roll holds. This form will prevent wrinkles and keep your pants fresh!

How to fold dresses

I don’t have personal experience packing dresses, so I consulted my long-time girlfriend on this one. Here are her brilliant instructions.

First, lay the dress out on a flat surface like you did the other clothes.

Next, fold down the top half of the dress to the middle. Then, fold each side toward the middle as you did with the t-shirts. Then, fold the dress in half vertically.

Last, roll it up from the bottom into a tight package. For dresses, you will need to use rubber bands to help keep them rolled up and to avoid wrinkles.

How to fold underwear and socks

For underwear , follow a similar process to the one described for packing shorts.

Fold the waistband down, then fold the underwear in half horizontally. Last, roll up from the leg and wrap the waistband around the rolled underwear.

For socks , separate them into individual socks. Then, roll up from the toe, and wrap the foothole around the rolled-up sock.

Pack these inside your shoes (if you have a pair you packed) to save space in your packing cubes .

Packing a suitcase or backpack to save space

So, you’ve learned how to fold your clothing. But what about actually packing your clothing?

After all, learning how to properly fold clothes for travel means nothing if you don’t pack them right.

For this, I strongly recommend packing cubes .

Packing cubes not only keep your clothes tight, rolled up and save space. But, they also give you organization.

How to fold clothes for travel? Fit them into a packing cube!

After all, with the different sizes, you can pack your shirts in one packing cube, pants in another, and underwear, socks, etc. in another. These are the best travel gear I (and other travelers) own.

They make it much easier to turn your packing list into a “packed” list. Packing cubes fit easily into your baggage and can be moved around to create more space when necessary.

I recommend Gonex packing cubes . They work fantastically and are durable. But, any brand will work as they all mostly do the same thing.

So, here are some top tips when using packing cubes to pack:

  • Wear your heaviest clothing on the plane if possible
  • Put your largest packing cube in the bottom of your bag
  • If you’re using a backpack and bringing shoes, pack your shoes so they’re in the center of your back. This helps distribute weight better
  • Try sitting your smaller packing cubes in your bag vertically for more space
  • Find packing cubes that compress down even further with an extra zipper

So, you’ve learned how to fold clothes small for travel. What’s next?

And there’s your ultimate guide to folding. In this post, you learned how to fold clothes for a travel backpack , suitcase, or any other baggage you may own.

Hopefully, these tips will help you on your next trip.

Let me know what you think is the best tip, along with any other suggestions you may have! I’m always trying to improve my packing and keep an eye out for the best tips.

Why Proper Shirt Folding is Important for Travel

When it comes to traveling, proper packing is essential for a successful trip. One area that is often overlooked is how to fold shirts efficiently to maximize space and minimize wrinkles. Whether you’re embarking on a weekend getaway or a long-haul adventure, mastering shirt folding techniques can make a world of difference. This article will provide you with step-by-step instructions on various folding methods, tips for choosing the right shirt material, and tricks to avoid wrinkles during travel.

Choosing the Right Shirt Material

Before we dive into the various folding techniques, it’s important to understand that different shirt materials require different strategies. Cotton shirts, for example, can withstand more traditional folding techniques, while delicate fabrics like silk or linen may need extra care to prevent damage. Take a moment to assess the materials of your shirts and tailor your folding technique accordingly.

Step-by-Step Guide to Folding a Shirt for Travel

The basic fold.

  • Lay the shirt flat on a clean surface, with the front side facing down.
  • Smooth out any wrinkles or creases to ensure a neat fold.
  • Fold one side of the shirt towards the center, about one-third of the way.
  • Repeat the previous step with the other side, ensuring both sides are evenly aligned.
  • Fold the bottom of the shirt up towards the collar, leaving about two inches of space.
  • Fold the top portion of the shirt down to cover the folded bottom part.
  • Adjust the fold to ensure a compact and tidy result.

The Rolling Method

  • Smooth out any wrinkles or creases to ensure a neat roll.
  • Start from the bottom of the shirt and tightly roll it up towards the collar.
  • Adjust the roll as needed to create a compact and cylindrical shape.

The Bundle Wrap Technique

  • Place any small items, such as socks or undergarments, in the center of the shirt.
  • Fold one side of the shirt towards the center, covering the small items.
  • Fold the bottom of the shirt up towards the collar, encasing the small items.
  • Adjust the fold to ensure a secure and compact bundle.

Tips for Maximizing Space Efficiency

When packing for travel, space is often at a premium. Here are some additional tips to help you maximize space efficiency when folding shirts:

  • Roll your shirts instead of folding them to save space and minimize wrinkles.
  • Use packing cubes or compression bags to further condense your clothing.
  • Utilize the empty spaces within your shoes by stuffing them with rolled-up shirts or socks.
  • For longer trips, consider doing laundry at your destination to reduce the number of shirts you need to pack.

Packing Tips for Travel: Shirt Folding Techniques

Packing Delicate Shirts

Delicate shirts require extra attention to ensure they arrive wrinkle-free and undamaged. Here are some tips for packing delicate shirts:

  • Use tissue paper or thin fabric layers to protect the delicate fabric and prevent friction.
  • Fold delicate shirts using the basic fold method, as it offers the most support and minimizes creasing.
  • Place delicate shirts on top of other clothing items to avoid excessive pressure or crushing.

Avoiding Wrinkles during Travel

Wrinkles are an inevitability when traveling, but there are steps you can take to minimize their impact. Here are some tips for avoiding wrinkles during travel:

  • Choose wrinkle-resistant fabrics whenever possible.
  • Hang shirts immediately upon arrival and allow them to air out and naturally smooth out.
  • Roll your shirts instead of folding them and then place them in a garment bag for added protection.
  • If wrinkles do occur, use a handheld steamer or a hot shower to release the wrinkles.

By following the step-by-step instructions in this article and utilizing the various folding techniques, you’ll be well-prepared to pack your shirts with ease. How To Fold A Shirt For Travel

1. Make a plan

Make sure your shirt is completely flat. It’s not a good idea to do it on your bed, couch, or any other slanted surface. Smooth out any wrinkles in your dress shirt, and make sure it’s even on all sides, including the side.

2. Start by buttoning it.

Make sure your dress shirt won’t get creased on the trip before folding and packing it. Buttoning it up is the best method to do this. Don’t cut corners by only doing a few buttons. From top to bottom, button it up.

3. Begin folding

Now that you’ve prepared your dress shirt, it’s time to fold it. Begin with your shirt’s arms. Begin with one sleeve and make sure it’s nice and straight. You’ll want to fold it right along the shoulder crease.

4. Add a few more folds

Fold your dress shirt’s sleeve diagonally, then fold it in half again. The sleeve cuff should still be diagonal and lined up with the shirt’s collar at this point.

5. Do it all over again.

Then do the same thing with the other sleeve of the shirt. It may sound monotonous, but it will maintain your dress shirts in good condition while you’re on the road.

Starting with the buttons of your shirt pointing downward is another approach to fold the sleeves (toward your folding surface). The procedure is pretty identical to the first, except that each sleeve will be folded diagonally across the width of your dress shirt.

Place one sleeve diagonally across the other, making sure it’s straight and wrinkle-free. Then, starting near the collar, make certain the creases in the sleeves are ‘tight.’

The following stages are very much the same regardless of your strategy to deal with sleeves. Then, near the bottom of your shirt, begin your second fold.

If you use both hands, the folds will be even, and wrinkles will be avoided. Fold the bottom of the garment toward the collar and fold it upward. Fold the garment in half at this point.

Do You Have More Than One Dress Shirt In Your Bag?

Use this technique to keep multiple dress shirts in better shape if you’re traveling with more than one. It’s tempting to cut corners while folding a dress shirt properly because it takes time. Most of the time, this results in wrinkles that you have to iron out as soon as you arrive at the hotel.

However, you can feel good about saving some time with this technique. Even more, it works better at preventing wrinkles in your dress shirts.

Begin folding a single shirt as though it were a single garment. It was buttoned up, facing down, and resting on a firm, level surface.

However, instead of folding your sleeves diagonally, you’ll fold them almost straight down. The cuff of your dress shirt should point to the tail. The crease, or seam, that links the sleeve to the shirt’s body will still be folded.

Fold another dress shirt using one of the single-shirt folding methods we mentioned before to add to your trip bags. Then, arrange the second shirt neatly on top of the first shirt (while leaving the first shirt prepared as is). For the hack to work, you’ll need some leeway at the bottom, tail, or first shirt. An excellent length is usually 3 to 5 inches.

Fold the first shirt in half (with the second shirt laying on top of it). Make sure your shirts are neat once more by using both hands. The first shirt should now cover the second as if it were a book cover or a sandwich.

There’s one more step to carefully packing your dress shirts before putting them in your suitcase. Smooth them out and flip the button sides upward with both hands. Then go ahead and put them in while you continue to pack.

Advantages Of Rolling Your Clothes

It’s debatable whether you receive additional room. However, there are certain clear benefits to rolling your garments . You can easily see what you have and where it is, for starters. It’s also easy to pack as a result of this.

Not only that, but you can maximize the available area. Medium-weight textiles that roll smoothly and don’t wrinkle well are ideal for rolling. Moving a wool sweater is not something anyone likes to do.

If you fold your clothes to pack, you probably despise dealing with wrinkles. While you won’t be able to see everything in your luggage at a glance, you’ll arrive at your destination with fewer creases.

Of course, there are some materials where folding makes no sense. Folding very light, easily wrinkled materials is always the best option. A thick, wool sweater, on the other hand, will easily take up more space when rolled than when folded. In brief, particularly thin or thick materials should be folded, and anything else is fair game if you don’t mind creases.

FAQ’s

How do you fold a nice shirt for travel.

– Double-check that your shirt is buttoned.

– Lay it flat with the arms out, button side down.

– One sleeve should be folded over to the opposite side of the garment, keeping the armhole straight (slightly angled downward).

– Bring the sleeve to the point where the collar and cuff meet.

– Carry on with the rest of the sleeves.

Is it better to roll or fold clothes in a suitcase?

Clothing that wrinkles quickly, such as a cotton button-down shirt or linen, can be rolled instead of folded to save time. Fold things parallel to creases when they are visible. Folding the garment in half will result in unsightly creases on the sides, and the bottom will wrinkle more easily.

How to fold men’s shorts for travel?

One approach even demonstrates how to fold them in such a way that they may be tucked into themselves, ensuring that they maintain their shape no matter how jostled your luggage becomes. To ensure that the shorts lay flat, fold them on a level surface and loosen any tightened waists as much as possible. When in doubt, bring a steamer with you just in case any bothersome wrinkles persist.

Packing is a hated task, but it’s not quite as bad as hoping the hotel iron doesn’t scorch your best dress shirt. Naturally, if you want to be more organized and potentially save room, you can roll some things. Hope you will learn how to fold a shirt for travel in this article.

To properly fold a dress shirt, you may need to take more steps than you thought possible. Don’t worry; it’s pretty straightforward once you get the feel of it. If you’re concerned that you’re taking longer than a dress shirt deserves, keep in mind that ironing is optional.

How to Fold Dress Shirts for Travel | 4 Easy Steps for Your Collared Shirt

by Tanya Zhang Mar 27, 2020

how to fold dress shirts for travel

Written by Tanya Zhang

Chances are, if you’re packing a dress shirt when you travel, it’s for an occasion where pressed, professional collared shirts are a must. After an especially long journey, it’s a huge pain to whip out the hotel iron and straighten out every shirt for travel.

Of course, you can try the old hack of hanging them in the bathroom while you take a steamy shower. However, if you haven’t tried it, here’s a spoiler alert: it doesn’t work well for shirt folding.

In fact, it’s only vaguely better than patting your shirt down through the day and hoping the wrinkles fall out. Here’s how to fold dress shirts for travel the right way.

How to Fold Dress Shirts for Travel

1. Lay out your dress shirt and button it up

Make sure you lay your shirt out nice and flat. Don't do it over your bed, couch, or any other uneven surface. Smooth out any wrinkles and make sure your dress shirts are even on all sides, even the side of the shirt.

Before you fold and pack your dress shirt, make sure it won't get creases on the way. The best way to do this is to button it up. Don't skimp and just do a few buttons. Button it all the way up from top to bottom to get the best fold for travel.

2. Fold the dress shirt sleeves in lengthwise

Your dress shirt is all prepped, and now it's time to start folding. Begin with the arms of your shirt. Start with the left sleeve, then right, and be careful to keep it nice and straight. You want to fold it right along the crease where the shoulder is and follow the shirt lengthwise.

Fold the sleeve of your dress shirt diagonally, then fold it in half again. By this point, the sleeve cuff should still be diagonal, and lined up with the shirt's collar of the shirt.

Then, simply repeat the process with the other sleeve of the shirt. It may seem tedious, but it’ll keep your dress shirts in good shape while you travel.

Another way to take care of folding the sleeves is to start with the buttons of your shirt facing downward (toward your folding surface). The process is very similar to the first method, but you’ll fold each sleeve diagonally across the breadth of your dress shirts.

Lay one sleeve diagonally across the other, taking care to ensure they’re straight and wrinkle free. Then, make sure the creases in the sleeves are ‘tight’ and begin close to the collar.

No matter the method you prefer for dealing with sleeves, the next steps are pretty much the same. Then, start your next fold at the bottom of your shirt.

3. Fold your shirt upwards twice

Use both hands to ensure the folds are even and keep a few wrinkles away. Fold the bottom of the shirt upwards, toward the collar. The shirt should now be folded in half.

If it’s a shorter dress shirt for travel, you can stop this step now. If you’re folding longer dress shirts (or are really short on space), go ahead and fold it again. Keep your folds even if you fold it twice. They should be lined up with each other to keep your shirt looking pressed.

4. Pack away your dress shirt for travel

Smooth out any other wrinkles and make sure all your dress shirt folds are crisp and tucked in the right places. Pack your dress shirt in your suitcase and you're good to go!

Folding multiple collared shirts?

If you’re packing more than one dress shirt, use this hack to keep them in even better shape. Folding a dress shirt properly can take time, and it’s tempting to cut corners for a folded shirt. Most of the time that results in wrinkles you end up ironing out as soon as you get to the hotel.

With this hack though, you can feel good about saving yourself some time. Even better, it’s more effective at keeping wrinkles away from your dress shirts.

Start like you would if you were folding a single shirt flat. Buttoned up, facing down, and on a sturdy, flat surface.

Instead of folding sleeves diagonally however, you’ll fold them nearly straight down. Basically, the cuff should point at the tail of your dress shirt. You’ll still fold along the crease, or seam, that connects the sleeve to the body of the shirt.

multiple collared shirts on a shelf folded

Do one sleeve at a time, pinching the seam to make sure you have a precise fold. Make sure to smooth out any wrinkles, and then move on to the next sleeve of the folded shirt. Once both sleeves are folded, smooth them out again for good measure.

To add another dress shirt to your travel luggage, fold it using one of the methods for single shirts we discussed above. Then, take the second shirt (while still leaving the first prepared as you have it), and stack it neatly onto the first shirt.

You still need some room at the bottom, or tail, or your first shirt for the hack to work. Typically, 3 to 5 inches is a good length.

Then, fold the first shirt (with the second laying on top of it), roughly in half. Again, use both hands to make sure your shirts look nice and neat. At this point, the first shirt should cover the second like a book cover or sandwich.

Before you put them into your suitcase, there’s one more thing to do to pack your dress shirts properly. Smooth them out, and use both hands to flip the button sides upward. Then, go ahead and put them in and keep packing.

Folding shirts vs Rolling up shirt

This debate again? Who hasn’t argued with their roommate, spouse, or traveling companion about whether you should fold or roll your clothes? Some people tout rolling as the end all be all, claiming it saves tons of space. Some people refute the claim, and prefer folded clothes. Let’s look at the grand debate:

Benefits of rolling

Whether or not you truly get more space is up for debate. However, if you roll your clothes, there are some undeniable advantages. First, you can see what you have and where it is, clearly. Because of this, it’s easier to pack.

Not only that, you can make the most of the space you have. Rolling is good for medium weight fabrics that roll easily and can come back wrinkle free. Nobody wants to try and roll a wool sweater. Here are the main benefits of rolling shirts up for travel:

  • Minimizes wrinkles : Rolling shirts can help reduce creases and wrinkles, especially if you roll them tightly.
  • Saves space : Rolled shirts generally take up less space in your suitcase, allowing you to pack more items.
  • Easy access : Rolled shirts can be easily identified and retrieved from your suitcase without disturbing the other items.

Benefits of folding collared shirts

If you’re a ‘fold your clothes to pack’ person, chances are you hate dealing with wrinkles. While you may not be able to see everything in your luggage at a glance, you also have less wrinkles when you arrive at your destination.

Of course, there are also some materials that it really doesn’t make sense for folding shirts. Very light, easily wrinkled fabrics are always best folded. However, if you're thinking of bring a sweater to wear over your dress shirt , you'll want to roll it as it’ll easily take up more room than if it’s folded.

In short: very thin or thick fabrics are best to pack folded, and if you hate wrinkles, anything else is game, too. Here are the main benefits of folding dress shirts for travel:

  • Easier organization : Folding shirts neatly and placing them in stacks can make it easier to locate specific shirts and maintain a tidy suitcase.
  • Fewer wrinkles for certain fabrics: Some people find that folding works better for certain fabrics, such as stiffer dress shirts, as it helps maintain their shape.
  • Ideal for business trips or formal occasions : Folding shirts can create a more polished look when you unpack them for business meetings or formal events.

Packing can be a dreaded activity, but it’s not quite as dreaded as hoping the hotel iron doesn’t burn your best dress shirt. Naturally, there are some things it’s fine to roll if you want to stay more organized and potentially save space.

It may seem like more steps than you thought possible to properly fold a dress shirt. Don’t worry, once you get the hang of it, it’s actually quite simple. If you worry you’re taking more time than a dress shirt merits, remember there’s minimal ironing.

How to Fold a Dress Shirt for Travel to Save Space [3 Methods]

shirt folding travel

Dress shirts are essential items for many travelers, whether they are attending a meeting, wedding, or formal event. However, packing these shirts can be a challenge because they tend to wrinkle easily and occupy a lot of space. Fortunately, there are some ways to fold a dress shirt for travel that will minimize wrinkles and maximize space. In this article, we will teach you how to fold a dress shirt for travel in three different ways that will be super helpful.

Table of Contents

How to Fold a Dress Shirt for Travel

While packing dress shirts for travel, you may have plenty of folding choices. You can compare them and choose the one that suits you best.

Method 1: Bundling the Shirts

Method 1: Bundling the Shirts

Bundling is a unique folding technique you may use to prepare your excellent dress shirts for travel. By using this method, you may conserve space while preventing excessive wrinkling of your dress shirts. Although it requires some practice, it will be worthwhile!

Step-by-Step Guide

Make sure you have two or more dress shirts that you want to pack in your bag. Choose a durable and strong shirt because you’ll be using it to fold the others. It implies that the shirt should be made from a fabric that is resistant to tearing or stretching, like cotton or polyester. Now, do these steps to pack them nicely.

  • Place your dress shirt on a flat surface and check that all the buttons are tightly closed.
  • Gently place your finger at the neckline and fold both sleeves downwards. Then align them with the sides of the shirt.
  • Move the left sleeve over to the fold you’ve created and position it on the back of the shirt. If dealing with a shirt with short sleeves, the folded sleeve should be positioned on the upper third of the shirt. If you have a shirt with long sleeves, make sure the folded part of the sleeve goes all the way down.
  • Repeat the folding process for the right sleeve so that both sleeves are neatly folded along the back of the shirt.
  • Smooth out any wrinkles or creases, and make sure the shirt lies flat and even. Take another dress shirt, and place it on top by leaving a small portion (around 3-5 inches) hanging beyond the edge of the first shirt.
  • Envelop the second shirt by folding the first shirt around it and creating a “bundle.” Turn the bundled shirts around so that the front is facing you. Now, they’re ready to be packed into your suitcase.

Using this technique can stop your shirts from getting wrinkled while you travel. But when you arrive at your destination, it’s a good idea to hang or lay out your shirts to keep them looking neat and smooth.

This is one of the best approaches to fold a dress shirt for travel. How? Let’s find out.

  • More clothing can fit in a tiny bag which frees up room in your suitcase.
  • Your shirts won’t crease or wrinkle because they are wrapped around one another and shielded from pressure and friction.
  • It is easy to do because you only need to fold your shirts once and then bundle them together.
  • It is adaptable because it can be used with any style of shirt, whether it has short or long sleeves, cotton or silk.

There are barely any cons to this approach, but keep the following in mind.

  • If you only need to pack one shirt, this approach won’t be helpful.
  • It did not work on thick or heavy shirts as they might make the bundle excessively bulky or difficult to fold.

Method 2: Folding the Shirts

Method 2: Folding the Shirts

The simplest and most common way to pack a dress shirt for travel is to fold it. This strategy can also help in maintaining your shirt neat and wrinkle-free. However, it might not save space. If your suitcase is already full, skip this method. It is only recommended for someone who has a reasonable space in their luggage or has a few shirts to fold only.

Sometimes you have to go somewhere fast, and you need to pack your clothes quickly. Don’t worry. You can rely on this folding technique. The best part is you don’t need to do anything hard. Follow these few steps, and your dress shirts will be ready to go.

  • Begin by locating a flat surface, such as a table, chair, or bed, on which you can lay your shirt. This action will facilitate wrinkle-free folding. Proceed to button up your shirt fully (from the collar down to the bottom) to create a smooth folding.
  • Position your shirt face down on a flat surface. Fold one sleeve towards the shirt’s center, stopping just short of the collar. This action will result in a third of the front section overlapping the back. Repeat this step with the other sleeve and ensure symmetrical alignment.
  • After that, fold both sleeves forward, tracing their edges, shaping a distinct “V.” This maneuver reduces bulkiness and enhances compactness.
  • Finally, fold the lower portion of the shirt (the tail) upwards, lengthwise. Depending on the shirt’s length, you may need to fold it once or twice.

Repeat the process with another shirt. Be sure to layer it over the first shirt while maintaining some space between them.

This approach is beneficial in several ways.

  • This technique significantly diminishes the visibility of wrinkles and ensures your garments maintain a tidier appearance.
  • It’s easy to execute, making the folding process hassle-free.
  • This approach is advantageous for delicate fabrics that tend to wrinkle easily.

Consider the following aspects before following this approach.

  • There’s a chance that folds could create lines on the shirt.
  • You might need to search through your suitcase to find a specific shirt.
  • Takes up a bit of extra space.

Method 3: Rolling the Shirts

Method 3: Rolling the Shirts

For optimal utilization of your bag’s packing area, consider rolling your shirts instead of folding them. Dress shirts of a medium weight benefit the most from this feature. However, you shouldn’t roll shirts made of silk , linen, or wool because of the risk of snagging or creasing the fabric.

If the previously mentioned methods haven’t fully convinced you, consider giving this approach a shot to achieve a polished shirt roll!

  • First off, find yourself a flat surface that’s smooth and clean. Afterward, fasten the buttons on your shirt and place it flat with the back side oriented upwards.
  • Now, here comes the folding magic. Take your shirt, and fold it right down the middle by creating a crisp vertical line right through the center.
  • Start by positioning your finger on the left sleeve, then elegantly fold the right sleeve over until those two cuffs come together.
  • Gently fold both sleeves down the shirt’s body, neatly aligning them with the existing fold-line.
  • Now, begin rolling the shirt upwards from the bottom and move carefully until you reach the collar.

And there you have it – a tidy and snug little cylinder ready to be stowed away. Use a plastic bag to organize your shirts or fold and stack them neatly. When traveling, packing cubes or compression bags can assist in organizing your folded clothes within your suitcase.

I personally folded my shirts before my trip to the USA. Following are the benefits I gained from this approach.

  • This method is super quick and easy!
  • You’ll free up a lot of space in your suitcase, making it a fantastic option for packing in a carry-on.
  • Finding items in your bag becomes a breeze, saving you from digging around.
  • You can use this method successfully for a wide range of clothing items like shirts, trousers, jumpers, and other garments.

A few problems are also possible in this approach so consider them as well.

  • You might notice more wrinkles compared to the traditional folding method.
  • This technique isn’t ideal for fragile or easily wrinkled shirts.
  • Bulkier clothing may not work effectively with this method.

Following are certain extra tips that would help you retain the shirt’s outlook even after packing.

Extra Tips for Folding Dress Shirt for Travel

  • Use Tissue Paper or Plastic Wrap : To further prevent wrinkles, consider placing a layer of tissue paper or plastic wrap between folded shirts. This acts as a barrier and reduces friction, helping to keep your shirts smooth.
  • Pack Shirts Inside Out : If you’re concerned about delicate fabrics or prints rubbing against other items, pack your dress shirts inside out. This can help protect the outer surface from potential damage.
  • Utilize Collar Supports : To maintain the shape of the collar during travel, insert collar supports or plastic collar stays. This will prevent the collar from becoming flattened or misshapen.
  • Combine Rolling and Bundling : For a unique approach, try rolling each shirt individually and then bundling the rolled shirts together. This can create a compact bundle that reduces wrinkles and maximizes space.
  • Alternate Folding Directions : When folding the sleeves and body of the shirt, alternate the direction in which you fold them with each layer. This can distribute pressure more evenly and reduce the risk of creases.
  • Shake Out and Hang Upon Arrival : Once you reach your destination, gently shake out the shirts and hang them in the bathroom while you take a shower. The steam can help release any minor wrinkles, leaving your shirts looking crisp.
  • Use a Shirt Folding Board : If you want perfectly uniform folds, consider using a shirt folding board. These boards provide guidelines for folding, ensuring a neat and consistent result every time.
  • Pack Heavier Items on Top : If you’re stacking shirts in your suitcase, place heavier items like shoes or toiletries on top. This prevents unnecessary pressure on the shirts, helping to maintain their wrinkle-free state.
  • Practice Before Travel : Before your actual trip, practice the folding methods to become more efficient. This will help you get comfortable with the techniques and reduce the time you spend packing.

Whether you’re traveling or storing your dress shirts in a drawer, learn how to fold your dress shirts properly and avoid wrinkles.

While it’s best to hang your dress shirts, it’s not always possible. If you’re traveling, you’ll have to pack it in a suitcase or backpack.

If your closet is small, you’ll likely fold them and place them in drawers. When you’re folding dress shirts, the most important thing is to prevent wrinkles.

While you can’t eliminate wrinkles, the way you fold your dress shirt determines whether it’s wrinkled or not.

The following are the two best ways to fold a dress shirt depending on the purpose.

Table of Contents

Method 1: the travel (narrow) fold.

The travel fold is best for packing in a suitcase, backpack, or duffel bag. It’s the narrowest type of fold, which is space-saving and minimizes wrinkles. To do the travel fold, take the following steps:

  • Button up your shirt to the collar. You can leave the first one unbuttoned.
  • Flip your shirt over. The buttons should be facing down, and make sure it’s flat.
  • Fold one sleeve across the shirt, and pull the cuff up the middle until it reaches the collar.
  • Repeat Step 3 for the other sleeve, which will stack on top of the first sleeve.
  • Fold the sides in to cover the sleeves. They’ll overlap in the middle.
  • Fold the bottom of your shirt up 2 or 3 times.

Method 2: The Drawer (Wide) Fold

The drawer fold is also an excellent choice for storing on shelves. It’s a wider and flatter fold. Take the following steps to do it:

  • Pull the left sleeve across the shirt and fold it up on the left side of the middle until it reaches the collar.
  • Repeat Step 3 for the right sleeve.
  • Fold the sides in to cover each sleeve. They’ll meet and slightly touch in the middle.
  • Fold the bottom of your shirt up 3 times.

How to get rid of wrinkles

Before you put on your dress shirt, make sure it’s free of wrinkles. A wrinkled shirt can make you look unprofessional, and it ruins the clean look of a button-up.

There are a few ways to get rid of wrinkles. One of the most common tools is a steam iron. However, the steam iron can be harsh on your clothes.

A gentler and better option is a handheld steamer. It’s better for your clothes and eliminates all wrinkles that it comes in contact with.

An excellent product is the BLACK+DECKER Advanced Handheld Garment and Fabric Steamer , which you can buy for $50.66 from Amazon. It offers different attachments and provides a continuous flow of steam to quickly remove wrinkles.

If you don’t have a steam iron or handheld steamer, you can boil a pot or kettle of water. Then, use it to remove the wrinkles. It’s a good method if you don’t have a steam iron or steamer.

Folding your dress shirts is quick and easy. The key is to have a flat surface and keep everything as flat as possible while you’re folding it.

Now, you know how to do it the right way. Your shirts will be less wrinkly and they won’t take up too much space.

The finishing touch is having shirts standup on their own to store upward in drawers, almost like you've created a clothing filing cabinet. This method's the best for seeing all of your clothes at a glance, so you're not wearing the same thing over and over.

Why Proper Shirt Folding Is Important For Travel

No one wants to walk into a meeting, date or any special event with a wrinkle-filled shirt. That’s why it’s crucial to learn how to fold your shirt properly to keep it crease-free, organized, and save space in your luggage.

Here are some reasons why proper shirt folding is essential while traveling:

Save Space In Your Luggage

Packing can be a daunting task, especially if you’re traveling light, and every inch of space in your luggage counts. By folding your shirts properly, you can save a considerable amount of packing space. Packing a shirt without folding it correctly means it will take up more space than necessary, leaving you less space to pack other essential items.

Proper shirt folding involves flattening the shirt, thereby reducing its bulk. You can also roll your shirts to save space in your luggage, but folding is best for dress shirts as it prevents creases.

Avoid Wrinkles

Anyone who has packed a suit before understands how easy it is to get wrinkles in clothing during travel. However, proper shirt folding can prevent wrinkles from happening. Folding your shirt properly will help keep its shape and prevent it from getting crushed.

Laying the shirt flat and folding it neatly will ensure the shirt remains wrinkle-free. This is especially important when traveling for business or special events, where you want to look your best.

Stay Organized

Packing can be stressful, and it’s easy to lose track of the items in your luggage. Folding your shirts properly will keep them organized and easy to find. When packing, you can place your folded shirts in a particular section of your luggage, such as in packing cubes or a specific compartment.

This will prevent you from having to rummage through your luggage to find the shirt you need.

Proper shirt folding helps save space in your luggage, avoid wrinkles, and keep your shirts organized. By following these simple steps, you can ensure your shirts remain crease-free and in the best condition while traveling.

Different Techniques For Folding Shirts

Packing for a trip can often feel like solving a jigsaw puzzle, but one thing you can do to make the process smoother is to master the art of folding shirts. Whether you’re packing for a business trip or a fun holiday, you don’t want to end up with a wrinkled shirt, and different folding techniques can help minimize this risk.

Here are three different techniques for folding shirts that will make packing so much easier:

The basic fold is the easiest and most common way to fold a shirt for travel. Here are a few key points to keep in mind:

  • Lay the shirt face down on a flat surface.
  • Fold one side of the shirt inwards, so the sleeve is straight along the side of the shirt.
  • Repeat with the other side of the shirt.
  • Fold the bottom of the shirt up to the collar.
  • Fold the collar down on top of the folded part of the shirt.
  • Fold the shirt in half, so the top and bottom edges meet.

Military Roll

This technique is perfect for those who want more compact packing. It’s also a great way to avoid wrinkles when you unpack your shirts. These are the key steps:

  • Spread the shirt flat on a smooth surface.
  • Fold the sleeves inwards so that they are lying flat against the shirt.
  • Fold the bottom of the shirt up so that it’s about one-third of the way up the shirt.
  • Begin rolling the shirt tightly from the bottom up, making sure to keep the sleeves folded flat against the sides of the shirt.
  • When you reach the top of the shirt, you can fold the sleeves back over the rolled shirt.

Konmari Method

The konmari method is famous for its minimalist approach and can also work for packing shirts. Here’s how to do it:

  • Fold the shirt in half lengthwise.
  • Fold the sleeves in along the sides of the shirt, creating a rectangle shape.
  • Fold the collar down over the shirt, so that it forms a triangle shape.
  • Fold the bottom of the shirt up so that it’s below the collar.

Now that you know the different ways to fold shirts for travel, you can decide which technique works best for you. No matter which method you choose, take your time and fold your shirts with care, and you’ll be sure to have a wrinkle-free wardrobe on your next adventure.

Step-By-Step Guide For Basic Fold

How To Fold Shirts Using The Konmari Method

  • Take the sleeves and fold them towards the middle of the shirt, keeping them straight along the seams.

Fold The Shirt Into Thirds

Tips On Packing Shirts In Your Luggage

Traveling with shirts can be a tedious task, especially when you want to keep them wrinkle-free. Here are some tips on how to fold a shirt for travel and pack them in your luggage efficiently.

Use Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are an excellent way to organize and pack shirts. Here’s how you can use them:

  • Fold your shirts in a rectangle shape
  • Roll them tightly and place them in the packing cubes
  • Make sure there is enough space to fit more shirts
  • Zip up the packing cube and place it in your luggage

Layer Shirts To Prevent Wrinkles

Layering your shirts in your luggage can help prevent wrinkles. Here’s how:

  • Start with the heaviest fabrics such as denim, flannel, or wool shirts
  • Fold them neatly and place them at the bottom of your luggage
  • Layer the lighter fabrics on top of the heavier ones
  • Fold them neatly and place them on top of each other
  • Place a layer of tissue paper between each shirt to prevent wrinkles

Pack Shirts Last So They’Re On Top

It’s important to pack your shirts last so that they are on top of your luggage. This can ensure that your shirts remain wrinkle-free during travel. Here’s how:

  • Pack your shirts after you have packed everything else in your luggage
  • Place them on top of all the other items
  • Make sure they are folded neatly and are not bunched up

Following these tips can help you pack your shirts in your luggage efficiently and keep them wrinkle-free. Happy travels!

Finally, packing a shirt for travel is not a hassle anymore. As we discussed, there are different ways to fold a shirt for travel, but remember to choose the one suitable for your suitcase type, travel style, and wardrobe needs.

Whether you prefer the military roll, the traditional fold, or the square fold, the key is to pack your shirt neatly and compactly to save space and minimize wrinkles. Keep in mind that, when traveling, the last thing you want is to stress out about messy clothes.

By following these tips, your trip will be smoother and more enjoyable. So why not start with the basic skill of packing a shirt and stay worry-free on the go? Happy travels!

A principal in Japan has been fired after allegedly being caught underpaying for his coffee multiple times.

As a result, he will not receive his retirement pay valued at about 20 million yen ($133,000 USD).

The incident was reported in January in the city of Takasago, located in the Hyogo Prefecture, Honshu, by  local Japanese media .

The 59-year-old male principal of a Takasago junior high school was reportedly busted after using a self-service coffee at a convenience store.

He allegedly had been pouring himself a large-size coffee while only paying for a regular-size coffee.

Japan Today reports the man did it the first time by accident, but repeated it, thinking he was getting away with it.

He told the board he did it “on the impulse of the moment” and declared that he was “truly sorry”.

The board members stated they were sorry “from the bottom of [their] hearts” for allowing it to happen.

According to  Sora News , the incident led to heated debate online.

One person said: “He could have bought like 100,000 large coffees with those retirement benefits he lost.”

Another added: “He’s an older guy, he probably could have gotten away with saying he didn’t know how to use the machine.”

Folding your T-shirts can seem like a laborious and time-consuming task, but it doesn’t have to be! You have several options when it comes to folding T-shirts: you can use a basic fold to store your shirts in your dresser, use an Army roll for a compact fold that’s great for packing T-shirts for traveling, or you can pinch 2 points of the T-shirt to form a folded shirt in almost 2 seconds!

Folding Vertically for Storage

Step 1 Lay the T-shirt flat with the front side down.

  • Keep the shirt face down when you fold it so any logo or image on the front will be visible when it’s folded.
  • Use an iron for T-shirts with a lot of wrinkles.
  • Line up all of the edges of the shirt so they’re even.

Tip: Fold the shirt in half again to make it even smaller and take up less space when you store it.

Step 6 Stack your T-shirts vertically to save space.

Julie Naylon

Try sorting your shirts by style, then by color to keep them organized once they're folded. Group your long sleeve T-shirts together, then short sleeve, then tanks. Then, sort the groups by color from either light to dark or dark to light.

Making an Army Roll

Step 1 Use an Army roll to pack for traveling.

  • The Army roll is the most time-consuming way to fold a T-shirt.

Step 2 Lay the shirt face up on a flat surface.

  • Form a cuff with the bottom of the shirt.
  • Flatten the fold by running your hands along the length of it so it’s more compact.
  • The T-shirt should look like 1 long rectangle.

Tip: Grip the collar of the T-shirt and tuck it under your fingers to start the roll.

Using the Pinch Method

  • The T-shirt needs to be as flat as possible, so be sure to apply pressure when you smooth out the wrinkles with your hands.

Step 2 Imagine 2 lines that intersect across the middle and the top of the shirt.

  • Fold the shirt again in the middle to make the folded T-shirt even more compact.

Tip: With practice, this folding method is the fastest way to fold your T-shirts.
