Mexican Mezcal Guide and FAQ
Mezcal vs tequila: whatâs the difference.
Mezcal and tequila are both made from the agave plant. Tequila is a type of mezcal, made only from the Blue Weber plant. Mezcal can be made from many types of agave, but itâs always 100% agave, while tequila is 50% agave.
To clarify on the tequila vs. mezcal question, thereâs a common saying that may help you understand: All tequilas are mezcals, but not all mezcals are tequila.
This is the same principle that applies to whiskeys, as all bourbons are whiskeys, but not all whiskeys are bourbons. Similarly, champagne can only come from the Champagne Valley in France, otherwise itâs sparkling wine.
Tequila must be made in Mexico â and can only be legally called tequila if itâs produced in Tequila, Mexico . This is a small town in Jalisco state, though tequila can also be produced in a few surrounding areas in other states.
Mezcal doesnât come from a specific region in Mexico, but it can only be legally produced in nine Mexican states .
The Consejo Regulador del Mezcal must certify it, otherwise it has to be labeled âdistilled agave spiritsâ or âagave distillate,â or something similar, but it canât legally be called mezcal.
đ„ Mezcal vs Tequila: How theyâre made
When it comes to how theyâre made, mezcal and tequila differ again. Both involve growing agave for several years, but the traditional mezcal production process is where they differ.
The blue agave piña (agave hearts) for tequila goes through a steaming process in an industrial oven, whereas the piña for mezcal is roasted in a fire pit in the ground.
This time in the underground pit is why mezcal often has a smoky taste â though not all mezcal has a smoky flavor.
They then go through a different extraction process, with tequila being largely mass-produced, whereas mezcal is handcrafted.
Each batch of mezcal will be different, even when itâs made by the same producer, whereas tequila has a more uniform taste.
Is mezcal stronger than tequila?
Yes â Mezcal is quite a bit stronger than tequila, though this isnât always the case so always check the label. In general, most mezcal alcohol by volume (ABV) is between 48%-55%, while tequila is often 40% ABV.
Looking for a mezcal with low ABV? Opt for Mezcal Monte Alban Mezcal con Gusano , which is 40% ABV alcohol content. This is one of the most popular mezcals in the United States, and readily available.
Is there a mezcal worm?
No â Unlike the infamous tequila worm found in most bottles, traditional Oaxaca mezcal does not have a worm in the bottle.
đ Fun Fact: That same worm is whatâs used to make sal de gusano (worm salt). This salt is traditionally served with mezcal in Mexico, as well as a plate of orange slices.
Does mezcal give you a hangover?
Yes â Mezcal can give you a hangover, but only if you overindulge. Most mezcal drinkers who consume in moderation rarely feel side effects the day after, though you probably donât want to test your limits because mezcal is quite strong.
One of the reasons mezcal is so popular is because this spirit miraculously leaves few with a hangover after imbibing, especially when youâre sipping it straight!
Since mezcal is a pure spirit, it doesnât have additives as most liquors do, which help you to not have a hangover.
Whatâs the best way to enjoy mezcal?
Mezcal is meant to be sipped at room temperature from a mezcal copita (âlittle cupâ), and not taken as a shot . Youâll hear people describe sipping mezcal as kissing the glass, which is the best way to enjoy the unique flavors.
In Mexico, mezcal is typically served with orange wedges and sal de gusano on the side. This is a salt mixture with chiles and dried larvae from the chinicuil worm. Alternatively, you can also enjoy mezcal in cocktails.
How does mezcal taste?
Wondering, Is all mezcal smoky? Itâs actually not! While mezcal is known for its smoky flavor, thatâs only the case for certain types of mezcal from Mexico.
In fact, one of the most popular and best mezcals in Mexico, 400 Conejos , is only slightly smoky.
Mezcal can also be fruity, floral, citrusy, and even a little spicy. Some mezcals are quite neutral and mild in flavor; it just depends on what type of mezcal youâre drinking and how itâs processed.
What are the best mezcal cocktails?
When it comes to mezcal cocktails, you have a lot to choose from. One of the best simple mezcal cocktails is the Paloma , made with mezcal and grapefruit soda .
You can substitute mezcal for tequila in many drinks, so if you love margaritas with tequila, try Mezcal Margaritas . For a kick, thereâs Spicy Mezcal Margaritas made with jalapeño or a Mexican hot sauce, like Tapatio .
đč Wondering, Whatâs the best mezcals for cocktails? Some high quality options that work nicely include Ilegal Mezcal Joven , Cruz de Fuego EspadĂn , Agave de CortĂ©s Mezcal Joven and PelotĂłn Mezcal .
Thanks to mezcalâs versatile flavor, itâs actually easy to substitute for the liquor in most cocktails.
Some popular options include the Mezcal Negroni , Mezcal Manhattan and Mezcal Mule , which is a Moscow mule with mezcal instead of vodka.

We felt really safe strolling through âCentro Historicoâ with Rob. He was keen to provide us with an authentic taco tasting experience at a leisurely pace. All the tacos we tried were delicious, I particularly enjoyed the taco de carnitas, featuring beyond succulent pork.
Kerry loved the Taco El Pastor, a Lebanese inspired delight. Traditionally made from lamb, but more commonly now using pork in a house marinade.
The personal touch
I really enjoyed our tailor-made, personal experience. The options were varied and kept open, the adventurous can choose brain, ear and nose of the pig, whilst I stuck to more traditional cuts. The Best Tacos in Mexico City
Every time we spoke to someone who had visited Mexico before our trip, the first thing they said was âthe food is so good!â So it was one of the things we were really excited about before arriving. It certainly didnât disappoint, we ate our way across the country, enjoying mole in Oaxaca, cochinita pibil in Yucatan and tequila in Jalisco. In Mexico City, it was all about tacos. We tried a huge variety of different tacos and explored the different neighbourhoods checking out the best places to eat. We also took two food tours while here to get insider knowledge on the best tacos in Mexico City. I would highly recommend taking one of these tours when you arrive in the city, not only does it introduce you to some great places to eat and drink, but it also helps you get your bearings of the city. Additionally, it made us feel much more comfortable about exploring the city on our own.
You canât visit Mexico without trying tacos â they are a staple of the Mexican diet and in Mexico City, youâll find them on almost every street. Though there are many variations, tacos are essentially soft corn tortillas with an assortment of fillings such as seasoned meat, legumes or cheese, often garnished with salsa and chilli.
Tacos Al Pastor
âTacos Al Pastorâ means shepherd style, one of the most popular types of taco. We ate tacos al pastor many times during our travels in Mexico, in particular in Mexico City.
Thin strips of pork are sliced from a trompo (a vertical rotisserie) and marinated with achiote (a Mexican spice). They date back to the arrival of Lebanese migrants in the early 1900s who brought the shawarma concept with them.
El Tizoncito
El Tizoncito claims to be the birthplace of tacos al pastor, and while that may or may not be true, they are totally worth trying. Located in the Condesa neighbourhood, this was the first stop on our taco and tequila tour and the tacos were delicious.

El Huequito
This taqueria in the Centro HistĂłrico has been running since 1959 and is still one of the most popular in Mexico City. If I had to choose, I would say these just beat the tacos al pastor at El Tizoncito, but both are delicious and worth visiting!
Tacos Ărabes
Tacos Arabes originated in Puebla, a city south-east of Mexico City. Similar to tacos al pastor, tacos ĂĄrabes use pork from the trompo seasoned with different spices and often served in pita-style bread.
TaquerĂa El Greco
This is a great place to try tacos ĂĄrabes, located in the Condesa neighbourhood. Itâs a tiny place and very popular. The tacos are served with Oaxacan cheese and great salsas. Best accompanied with a Mexican beer!
Check out our 3 week Mexico Itinerary
Tacos Campechanos
Tacos campechanos usually contain a selection of meats, often beef and pork, in particular, a type of thinly cut and marinated beef called Cecina.
TaquerĂa El Jarocho
TaquerĂa El Jarocho has been serving tacos for more than 70 years in Roma. Their specialities are tacos campechanos and tacos de guisados (stew tacos), served in handmade tortillas.
Cochinita Pibil
Cochinita Pibil comes from the Yucatan peninsula, but you can find some excellent options to try in Mexico City. Slow cooked pork marinated pork in sour orange and achiote, served with pickled onions. Traditionally the meat is wrapped in banana leaf and baked in the ground in a BBQ pit.
Riviera de Sur
This is a great place to visit, even if youâre not eating the tacos (though you should!) Located in Roma, the cantina has been renovated but still retains its old fashioned charm, including seats with in built drinks holders â so you donât knock over your drink while playing dominos! The Tacos de cochinita pibil are delicious, accompanied by Maestro Dobel Diamante cristalino tequila. This is also the place we discovered Sangrita â a chaser for Tequila.
Take a taco and mezcal tour in Mexico City
Other Great Tacos in Mexico City
Tacos de canasta chucho.
A great place in the Centro HistĂłrico, selling âbasketâ tacos. You can choose between beans, potatoes, bacon with salsa verde, eggs and much more. Perfect for refuelling while visiting the main tourist sights.
Ricos Tacos Toluca
Another spot in Centro HistĂłrico. Ricos Tacos Toluca is known for its green chorizo tacos! Itâs a typical hole in the wall type vendor with plastic seats on the pavement if you want to sit and eat. If you donât fancy the green, they also do red chorizo (although I definitely recommend trying it!)
Los Cocuyos
Los Cocuyos is the place to come for a variety of meats. Slow cooked in a huge bubbling vat you can choose from ojos (eyes) or lengua (tongue), campechano (mixed beef and sausage taco), suadero (brisket), tripe, chorizo and pig’s head. The meat is then seared on a hot plate and accompanied with lime juice, radishes, coriander, onion and your choice of salsa. The best part â they are open all night!
What Else and Where Else to Eat in Mexico City
Itâs not all about tacos in Mexico City; there are countless dishes and eateries to try. Some of our favourites are:
Flautas Poblanas At La Olla De La Abundancia (Located in Mercado de San Juan 78)
Tortillas rolled into a tight âflutesâ filled with meat and covered in a delicious sauce. Yum. This place was recommended to us by our lovely hosts at Chaya B&B â and it was one of the best things I ate in the whole of Mexico! They also do excellent pozole â a kind of Mexican soup/stew.
Mercado San Juan
Mercado San Juan (San Juan Market) is actually two markets, located a block apart. One is more of a produce market, selling meat, fish, fruit and veg and the other (Mercado de San Juan 78) has food stalls, where you can sit and have a meal. La Olla De La Abundancia (above) is located in Mercado San Juan. If youâre brave, there are some interesting options on offer, including alligator, iguana and scorpion!
Churros at El Moro
Once of Mexico Cityâs iconic treats. El Moro offers fresh churros with a variety of dipping chocolates including Spanish (The traditional, sweet and thick), French (With a touch of vanilla) and Special (Semiamargo (semi bitter) with a touch of cinnamon). There are 12 branches in the city, so youâll have plenty of opportunities to try them!
What to Drink in Mexico City
Whilst exploring the many great food options in Mexico City, be sure to stop for a drink or two. Some must try beverages in the Mexican Capital are:
Hot Chocolate
Mexico is the birthplace of chocolate and you canât leave Mexico City without trying some Chocolate. In Mexico, chocolate is more commonly served as a drink and is often made with cinnamon or other spices. One of the best places to try this is at Mayordomo in the Centro HistĂłrico, which serves delicious Oaxacan chocolate with milk.
There are plenty of good places to enjoy the famous Jaliscan spirit in Mexico City. Best sipped with an accompaniment of Sangrita – a non-alcoholic chilled drink usually made from tomato, lime, chilli and Tabasco sauce (although recipes vary). Try at Bar La Ăpera in Centro. This historic bar opened in the 1870s and still retains its traditional charm. Also a great place to sample Mezcal.
Though not as well-known as tequila, mezcalâs popularity is definitely on the rise. Iâd had it a few times prior to visiting Mexico, but once we were there it quickly became a favourite. Originating from Oaxaca, mezcal is made from the same Agave plant as tequila â but usually has a smokier taste. Try Artisanal mezcal at Escollo in Roma. (Also a good place to try tlayuda â the Oaxacan equivalent of pizza).
I have to admit I had never heard of this drink before arriving in Mexico, but in fact, Pulque is Mexicoâs oldest alcoholic drink. It is made from the fermented sap of the maguey plant. It has low alcohol content and is considered to have many health benefits! Try some at the cityâs oldest pulqueria – Las Duelistas or sample some interesting flavour varieties at La Nuclear in Roma. We opted for Coconut & peanut pulque.
Where to Stay in Mexico City
We spent a lot of time researching where to stay in Mexico City . Itâs a huge place (the 23 rd largest city in the world in case youâre wondering!), so we really wanted a good location to explore as easily as possible. We narrowed our search down to three neighbourhoods – Centro HistĂłrico, Roma and Condesa. The latter two are trendy districts, full of great eateries and the first is home to the famous Zocalo (central square) and plenty of museums.
If you’re spending more than 3 days in Mexico City , you may want to stay in two different accommodations in different areas of the city, so it’s easier to explore.
Budget â HoM Balderas has dorm rooms and private rooms with shared bathrooms in the centre of Mexico City.
Mid-Range â Casa Lomah Hotel is a stylish accommodation overlooking Alameda Central Park, in a renovated 1920s building which also houses a number of restaurants, bars, boutiques and small businesses. There is a lovely communal roof terrace and breakfast area.
Luxury â Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico is a 5-star hotel located in the Zocalo. In the centre is an incredible stained glass window – the fourth largest in the world, and it is worth visiting even if you donât stay there. Some of Spectre was filmed here too.

Neighbourhoods – We recommend basing yourself in Centro HistĂłrico, Roma or Condesa.
Getting around – Mexico City has a good Metro system and taxis are reasonably priced. You can also try the bike-sharing service EcoBici or book a Grab bike via the Uber app.

The 19 Best TaquerĂas in Mexico City
From a 70-year-old institution for barbacoa and Norteño music to a fusion taquerĂa serving pork belly in soy sauce with natural wine, hereâs where to eat tacos in CDMX

Mexico City is the epicenter of the taco universe. According to Mexicoâs National Institute of Statistics and Geography , thereâs a taquerĂa every 1,200 feet in the city, a sign of Chilangosâ obsession with tacos. But itâs not just sheer quantity that distinguishes CDMX; the diversity of the taco scene is unparalleled, with every food tradition in the country represented by celebrated taquerĂas, creating a sort of taco melting pot of cooking techniques, styles, regionalisms, and ingredients.
The taco is forever evolving, and much of that growth happens in CDMX. Just look at tacos al pastor: Chilangos adopted tacos ĂĄrabes from Puebla, applied a marinade of achiote and dry chiles, added a slice of pineapple, and gifted it back to the world as pastor. That evolution isnât over; Mexico City is home to countless up-and-coming taco-centric projects showcasing new spins on traditions. Plus, the casual nature of the taco suits the fast pace of the city. Locals agree that the best taquerĂas are those where you eat standing up, ideally leaning on a counter by the wall or sitting on plastic stools on the curb.
This list covers most of the major taco styles, from traditional barbacoa, pastor, carnitas, and suadero to new styles and fusions wrapped in tortillas. Whatever your taco craving, CDMX has you covered.

Tacos La Bici
A beacon on the north side of Mexico City, La Bici is a living example of many taquerosâ dream: to work hard and build a taco empire. The taqueros began selling tacos from a bicycle (which gives the taquerĂa its name) but worked their way up to a large, buzzing storefront on a corner lot in SatĂ©lite. Costilla and guisado tacos are among the best options, but whatever you order, be sure to check out La Biciâs well-stocked salsa bar, which includes more than a dozen different styles: pico de gallo, guacamole, tomatillo, roja, guajillo, habanero, and more. For locals who judge taquerĂas by the quality and variety of salsas, the secret to La Biciâs success is obvious.

La PingĂŒica
La PingĂŒicaâs pastor taco has been the same since the beginning of time. The tiny taco overflows with morita salsa, the meat is charred from the unruly fire cooking the trompo, and sweet caramelized onions cover it all. The whole taco almost falls apart, requiring you shovel it within seconds. The taquerĂa has remained a beloved spot for more than 40 years, mostly frequented by locals and in-the-know visitors. Donât be shy when ordering, since each taco is usually gone after two bites.
Tacos El Paisa
Walk around the San Rafael neighborhood, and you might smell El Paisaâs bubbling taco cauldron half a block away. The taquerĂa makes a statement with their suadero en trozo taco: chunky slices of slow-and-low cooked brisket that land in tortillas carefully crisped in oil, all topped with a bright red tomato salsa. Order your taco âcon todoâ as locals do, and donât miss the confit onion offered as a courtesy; itâs soft, sweet, salty, and everything good that an onion can be.
The upscale Polanco neighborhood isnât generally regarded as a taco destination in Mexico City, but the cochinita taco at El Turix justifies a visit. Juicy, tender, perfectly seasoned pork and a Yucatan-style achiote marinade are the keys to El Turixâs long-lasting popularity. Order a cochinita taco, a torta (if you want to go bigger), or the speciality, a panucho: a deep-fried tortilla stuffed with fried bean paste, topped with cochinita and red onion escabeche.

Los Cocuyos
The most famous downtown taquerĂa, Los Cocuyos keeps up an impressive operation 24/7 as diners gather on the short plastic stools on the curb at all hours. The shop specializes in suadero (brisket) and tripe cooked in a bubbly meat jacuzzi, as well as tacos de cabeza (steamed cowâs head). The Cocuyos technique is very basic; the tacos are cooked in lard confit seasoned just with salt, no herbs, and the master taqueros work patiently as they stir the cauldron, chop ingredients, and serve tacos until the pot is empty, usually around 3 or 4 a.m. Their tripe is one of the best in the city (soft yet crispy, oh so savory, never chewy), making Los Cocuyos an obligatory visit for any taco enthusiast. As of late, expect long lines around evening time.
TaquerĂa Gabriel
Located in the financial district, taquerĂa Gabriel specializes in tacos al carbon (charcoal-grilled tacos) and volcanes (served on a fried tortilla turned up at the edges) with grilled proteins like beef, adobada, suckling pig, and shrimp. The volcanes are especially great: charred, almost ashy tortillas, not quite as crunchy as a tostada, topped with a small mountain of meat and cheese melted over the top. One of a new wave of taquerĂas, Gabriel offers more flexibility than some other spots, allowing you to customize your taco with your choice of flour or corn tortilla or volcan, and the option to skip cheese.

Con Vista Al Mar
Even though Mexico City is miles away from the sea, it doesnât fall short on seafood. Con Vista al Mar celebrates Mexicoâs coastline cuisine, reinterpreting famous regional seafood tacos from Sinaloa, Sonora, Guerrero, and Baja California, and combining them with inland influences. For example, the Acapulco taco takes the renown fish a la talla (grilled fish coated with a chile-mayo adobo) from the fishing villages of Guerrero and places it in a tortilla with fried beans and red cabbage slaw. Or try the Zicatela, which honors Oaxacan flavors with a deep-fried taco served with black chichilo (Oaxacan mole) on the side as a dip. When in doubt, order one of the most sought-after tacos, the Chilango: A tribute to CDMXâs famous campechano taco consisting of perfectly seasoned, house-made shrimp chorizo with chicharron and spicy tomato sauce. Con Vista al Mar regularly hosts one-on-one taco battles between local chefs and it has become the âitâ spot for the industry community.

Tizne Tacomotora
Tizne was one of the early adopters of the taco as a multicultural vessel, reframing the dish through an international lens and inspiring a new wave of innovative taco shops. The offerings cover different culinary traditions, with ingredients and flavor profiles from China, Lebanon, Japan, and the United States. Despite the broad range, the entire menu is anchored in distinctively smoky character, nixtamalized blue-corn tortillas, and chile-packed salsas. The taquerĂa is located in a small space in Roma, filled with tables to sit down and eat, though service remains rightly casual.
Cariñito Tacos
Mexican and Asian flavors meet in corn tortillas at Cariñito Tacos in Colonia Roma. Locals tend to label this place a hipster taquerĂa, due to their smaller portions, toppings like microgreens, and interesting selection of wines. But donât underestimate the taqueros, who produce deep flavors with combos like pork belly in soy sauce, or pork confit with tamarind and basil sauce, the most popular options on the menu. Somewhere between a street eatery and a micro-restaurant, whatever Cariñito is, it comes with a lot of hype.
Tacos Hola El GĂŒero
For a full meal wrapped in a tortilla, Hola El GĂŒero in Condesa is the right call. The shop is famous for its array of guisados (stews), which taqueros carefully scoop from a regiment of clay cazuelas onto double-stacked tortillas along with generous servings of rice or beans. Look for the steak in pasilla sauce, the chicharron in green salsa, or chile relleno, which comes with green poblano pepper or red ancho pepper. Hola El GĂŒero is especially busy during the lunch hour.

TaquerĂa El Greco
Tacos ĂĄrabes are like the older cousins of pastor tacos. Middle Eastern immigrants, likely from Lebanon, first introduced cooking with the vertical spit in Puebla, mingling sympatico meats, flavors, and flatbreads. The version of tacos ĂĄrabes at El Greco is a relative elder statesman among Mexico City tacos; the taquerĂa dates back to the mid-â70s. Stick to ordering what they do best: the doneraky taco, served in pita. Locals and visitors both frequent this spot in Condesa, randomly bumping into friends or making new acquaintances, all lured by the enduring mysticism of the old-school taquerĂa that has become harder to find in the neighborhood.

Carnitas Paty
Carnitas Paty has been a popular stop deep inside the Jamaica Market for more than three decades, and judging by the amount of business they do on any given day, theyâre still at the top of their game. Any taco devotee will surely order a mixed taco, usually a combination of rib or lean pork meat with cuerito (confit pork skin), porkâs ear, or buche (stomach). Carnitas Paty is also known for their cold, refreshing tepache, a fermented pineapple drink with piloncillo. Thereâs plenty of seating in the market to enjoy your prizes, though the stools are usually full; just be patient and grab a spot when you see one.
TaquerĂa Los Parados
The greatest meals at Los Parados come off the charcoal grill, where they cook all sorts of meats: arrachera (skirt steak), chorizo, pastor, chicken, pork chops, or some combination seasoned with onions, bacon, or cheese. The taquerĂa is quite popular as an afterparty spot late into the night, and service is quick. Order your tacos, wait for your order by the grill, and take your meal to any available counter. The name of the taquerĂa comes from the custom of eating tacos on your feet, which connoisseurs argue is the best way to indulge in the art of the taco.

Tacos Rubenâs
The legend of Tacos Rubenâs is well known across Mexico City. A family-run taquerĂa, this tiny street-side taco cart lures customers from all corners of the city for a taste of the famous taco especial, a combination of suadero, longaniza, and tripe. The tacos are generous, served on standard-sized tortillas (not the shrunken tortilla taquera thatâs usually seen in taquerĂas). The service is extra friendly, though you might want to visit early because the tacos run out fast.

Tourists donât tend to explore the quiet Narvarte neighborhood, but El Vilsito is worth the trip alone for a pastor taco thatâs a top pick for locals. The taqueros are true masters at shaving the trompo, flinging pineapple slices from the spit, and catching them in mid-air in a display of taco acrobatics. The gringa (two flour tortillas filled with pastor meat and a generous portion of melty cheese) and the bistocino (a perfect combination of grilled steak and bacon topped with onion) are also worthy of praise. Big molcajetes overflowing with salsas and late-night crowds complete the Vilsito experience.

More in Maps
For night owls or early birds with a hankering for tacos at 3 a.m., Tacos Tony is here for you. The sizzling, steaming taco operation has been around for more than 15 years in a busy intersection in the Narvarte neighborhood. Chilangos revere the taquerĂa for the spiciness of their guacamole, roja, and verde salsas, all kissed with habanero. The campechano taco is among the best in town, but other excellent options include their lengua (tongue) and chunky suadero, a thick piece of perfectly cooked brisket on a crisp tortilla.
Los 3 Reyes
For lamb barbacoa fresh from the oven, head to Los Tres Reyes in Mixcoac, an institution with over seven decades of experience that opens every Saturday and Sunday. The taquerĂa is almost a religion, offering salvation in the morning to anyone who indulged a bit too much at happy hour the night before, all set to the tune of live Norteño music playing in the background. The barbacoa is sold by the pound as it comes out of brick ovens, and it should be mandatory to pair these tacos with a cup of the shopâs well-seasoned broth, the richest in Mexico City.
Tacos de Canasta Beto
Canasta tacos are remarkably popular among locals, but the style often goes completely unnoticed by visitors; the tacos are constantly on the move, stacked in baskets covered with cloth and plastic, and transported on the backs of bicycles or in mobile carts. The technique for canasta tacos requires a decent level of expertise. Taqueros fill tortillas with various stews â usually chicharron with green salsa, fried beans, or shredded meat with potato â stack them inside a cloth-covered basket, pour in a hot seasoned oil with chile, and close the basket to let it all steam and soak and season from within. The tacos emerge soggy and rich, but intact enough to eat without dissolving in your hand. Tacos El Beto is relatively easy to find; the long-time player has an official corner in the CoyoacĂĄn neighborhood. Try the chicharron taco with the guacamole and habanero salsa.

Los Milanesos
For more than 20 years, Los Milanesos has severed one of the heartier creations in the taco scene: two tortillas topped with a spoonful of refried beans and thick strips of beef or chicken milanesa (breaded steak) coated with a very spicy guacamole salsa. Los Milanesos really cemented their reputation with the ham and cheese milanesa, a massive, indulgent mess of melty cheese and thick slices of ham, all crispy and crunchy from the deep fryer. Los Milanesos is a street stand located on the sidewalk of a busy avenue; just look for the crowd.
