16 of the best streets in Perth to see Christmas lights

Travel & Touring  |  WA Things to Do

7 December, 2023  By: Monique Ceccato

Rounding up the family and heading out to see Perth’s elaborate Christmas light displays has become a special treat for young families. Houses right across the metropolitan area, from Mandurah to Alkimos, put on their festive finest from as early as late November.

It’s all in the name of spreading some holiday cheer. Queue your favourite Christmas carols, strap on your seatbelts, and hit the road to see some of these dazzling Christmas light displays.

RELATED: Perth's most scenic drives »

8 Malleefowl Way

Decorating a house with more than 13,000 lights sounds like a recipe for glittering chaos. But 8 Malleefowl Way has to be one of the neatest, most organised Christmas light displays in Perth. The interactive display runs from 7:30pm to 10:00pm each night and is programmed to change in time with the carol soundtrack, which you can tune into on 99.9FM if you’re swinging past by car. If walking, park at the nearby Alkimos Beach Primary to ease congestion in the residential streets.

13 Warrina Place Barely an inch of this Armadale home’s brick façade is left uncovered by the magic of Christmas. Around 350,000 LED lights adorn the house, gardens, and trees, as well as giant Christmas avocado and tin soldier inflatables. You can catch the glittering display from 7:30pm to 10:00pm, right up until Christmas day. The easiest way to get to the home is by walking from the Challis Primary School car park.

Aromatic Crescent, Harmony Avenue*, Kennack Vista Make an evening of your light-seeing and drop into three of Atwell’s most celebrated displays; it takes all of 10 minutes to drive between the trio. Start at Aromatic Crescent, where an interactive inflatable igloo, huge sleigh, and Santa chair are the main attractions. Then, move on to the synchronised audio-visual display and artificial snow (only on weekends in the lead-up to Christmas and every day closer to the big day) at Kennack Vista before finishing on the glittering lights at Harmony Drive.

24 Livonia Street* Don some festive finery and pose for a memorable Christmas photo in this Brabham home's life-sized Santa chair or sleigh. There’s a bubble machine, smoke machine, faux snow to enhance the atmosphere, and—of course—thousands of sparkling lights. Make a night of it and have an early barbecue dinner at the nearby Ariella Adventure Park. The Christmas lights don’t kick off until around 7:00pm, so you have plenty of time to enjoy the park's calm before the merry chaos.

Samson Court* Blinking, glittering, and moving lights are everywhere on this short, residential street. It’s another community effort, with almost every house joining in on the nightly shows. Park at the Poynter Primary School and cross the oval to get to the cul-de-sac, where you’ll see a house covered in more than 15,000 programmed LED lights, life-sized nativity scenes, and plenty of dancing lasers. The show starts at 7:30pm each night and ends at 10:30pm.

3 D’Ercole Court It might be well into the 30s in Perth come Christmas time, but it still snows in Gwelup. Head to 3 D’Ercole Court at 7:30pm from Thursday to Sunday, and you’ll get your white Christmas without leaving the country. Closer to Christmas day, it snows every night of the week, making the musical light program even more magical. A popular light display and a small cul-de-sac make for plenty of traffic, so leave the car elsewhere and wander down to the house on foot.

Hammond Park

High wycombe.

Palmer Crescent and Wem Mews Just as snow is an integral part of the festive season for the Northern Hemisphere, Christmas in Australia wouldn’t be Christmas without present-bearing and hat-wearing kangaroos, koalas, and wombats. The kids will love having their pictures taken beside the jolly inflatables, which join Santa and the reindeer at—what is arguably—the most Australian holiday display in Perth. But the inflatables aren’t the be-all and end-all. Thousands of Christmas lights are strung up all over the house and garden, too.

5 Geebung Street*

Park at East Maddington Primary and walk over to this Christmas Wonderland because the kids will want to stay here for hours, and it’s not just the detailed festive display that they’ll be enthralled by. There's a fun children's play area alongside the 3m Santa, his life-sized workshop, and a miniature North Pole Village. It really is all about the kids here, with all donations collected at the display supporting the Perth Children’s Hospital.

7 Collins Court*

7 Collins Court won the award for ‘Best House North of the River’ in the 2022 Synergy Xmas Lights Trail competition, and for good reason: it’s simply magical. Owners Jo and Maria have been decorating their house for their grandchildren, special needs daughter, and the public to enjoy for the past 18 years. It takes them some 120 hours to set up the thousands of lights in the leadup to Christmas, but it’s all worth it, with the results much-loved by the wider community.

Consulate Court There’s so much more to this festive street than just the fantastic light displays and reindeer on the roof. In the lead-up to Christmas day, there’s a roster of fun family events to look out for, too. If carolling is your thing, visit the street on its carolling night, or perhaps the charity bake sale or visiting Santa (escorted in via a Hot Rod) are more your speed. Understandably, the street gets busy at this time of year, so park up at Sacred Heart Primary and wander over from there. You can keep up to date with the month’s events on the street’s dedicated Facebook page.

Rio Tinto Christmas Lights Trail

Northbridge and perth.

47 nights of lights, 22 installations, and performances galore: The City of Perth, Rio Tinto, and Lotterywest have gone all out for Christmas this year. The mega lights trail begins in the Northbridge Piazza, where a pulsating light display reacts to your presence. Follow the installations through the Cultural Centre, Raine Square, and the Murray St Mall to Cathedral Square, where a constellation labyrinth awaits. Visit on a Friday or Saturday night, and Santa will be meeting and greeting the kids just across the road at Council House. Finish up the trail at Elizabeth Quay and marvel at the 8m-high illuminated sailing ship.

Mandurah Canals Christmas Lights

With the weather pushing the 30s, there’s no better way to experience the Christmas light displays than from the water. Launch your own boat into the Mandurah Canals and cruise around to see the 200+ homes that take part in the decorating extravaganza each year. Alternatively, book a spot on one of the many tours that depart at this time of the year—pirate ships and floating barbecue boats included. It’s a much-loved WA experience and one you have to do at least once in your lifetime.

Canal Christmas Lights Tours

Christmas lights cruises & tours, don’t miss out on mandurah’s famous christmas lights..

The coastal city of Mandurah , less than an hour south of Perth, is often compared to a little modern Venice because of its spectacular waterways and canal living. But did you know that Mandurah turns into a little Las Vegas every year from December until mid-January?

The Mandurah residents who live on the canals like to dress up their houses for Christmas with over 200 houses along the canals lit up all in the spirit of Christmas.

Experience a Christmas wonderland on water and on land in Mandurah .

Thanks to the Mandurah canal residents for putting in an enormous effort and dressing up their houses for Christmas at their own expense, every year more than 200 homes come alive with lights and everyone wants to stand out. There is some healthy competition in the canals and people who do not light up their houses are called the grinches – in a friendly manner of course.

Some residents have about 100 items plugged in, spend about 80 man-hours to install their Christmas lights decoration, and use 15 timeclocks powered by 30 power boards from 20 extension leads.

Christmas Lights Cruises

The best way to watch this spectacle is from a boat. As you drift down the canals by boat or on board a cruise or private charter, there is a water wishing well with all proceeds going to local charities. So don’t forget to take some cash and gold coins!

Ever popular, this delightful cruise experience becomes increasingly beautiful each year. Dress for the occasion, sing along with the Christmas carols and bring your Christmas cheer. This is a very special tour at a special time of year.

Don’t miss out on this spectacular event and book your Christmas Lights Cruise early with one of these local operators.

For the most up-to-date information on availability and remaining seats for Mandurah’s Christmas Lights Cruises, please contact the Mandurah Visitor Centre at (08) 9550 3999.

Mandurah Cruises Christmas Lights Cruise

Mandurah Christmas Lights Cruise

If you love Christmas Lights then this is the cruise for you! Run by Mandurah Cruises, the Christmas Lights Cruise departs every night from 1st December 2023 to 6th January 2024. There are several options to choose from including a 2hr family cruise which includes Christmas snacks, sunset and lights cruise, the premium cruise which includes drinks or the standard 1 hr cruise. We chose to do the standard 1-hour cruise.

Mandurah Christmas Lights Cruise

The cruises run nightly throughout December and into the first week of January. They are very popular and the weeke nd cruises book out quickly. The cruise we booked was on the Mandjar boat and departed from the Mandjar Jetty in front of the performing arts centre. The cruise we took departed at 7.30pm and there was another one leaving after we returned. There are other cruises departing from the Jetty at the same time so make sure check with one of the staff you are in the right queue.

Mandurah Christmas Lights Cruise

Even though the cruise didn’t depart until 7.30pm the booking information suggested arriving at the Jetty by 7pm and everyone was boarded by 7.20pm. To keep us entertained while we waited there was carol singing and Santa and his elf wandering around chatting with the kids.

Mandurah Christmas Lights Cruise

The Mandjar is a two-storey boat with a bar that was open for snacks, coffee and drinks. The boat cruises up and down the canals past the stunning light displays on the houses. While the boat is moving you are able to move around and go outside. The lights really are stunning with some of the houses really going all out. The boat played carols as it cruises through the canals, we were even encouraged to join and have a sing-along at one point.

Mandurah Christmas Lights Cruise

The whole family enjoyed the cruise and our daughter was amazed at some of the light displays and giant Christmas inflatables. I was a little worried my daughter would get bored but she loved the whole thing.

christmas lights cruise perth

We found the cruise relaxing and the visual display is awesome, we will definitely be back for another Christmas cruise next year.

The Best Perth Christmas Lights Of 2023

By Lachlan Kennedy 21st Dec 2023

  • X Post (Twitter)

Best Christmas lights in Perth

Nothing says Christmas quite like a festive light display in Perth, and with less than two weeks til Christmas, now is when the streets come alive with twinkling trails.

You have to appreciate the amount of effort it takes to create a picture-perfect scene that would impress Santa himself, so it would be rude not to get out and admire them all.

If you're stuck wondering what suburb has the best Christmas lights in Perth, you're in luck.

From walking trails to neighbourhood homes, we've made a list (and checked it twice) of the best Christmas lights in Perth for 2023.  Hop in the car, pump the carols, let's go.

Christmas Light Trails

The City Of Perth  has dusted off the decorations for another dazzling year of festive lights. As always, you'll find these mesmerising light installations dotted throughout Perth CBD and Northbridge, with a handy map available for download  here  to help you on your merry mile. This year there are a whopping 47 stops to tick off, featuring everything from giant illuminated Christmas trees to Christmas quokkas, kangaroos and more.

City Of Vincent's Christmas Light Trail

Leederville, north perth, highgate, mount hawthorn.

City Of Vincent's Christmas Light Trail in Perth

The City Of Vincent is also switching on the lights this year, with a string of awesome walk-through installations featuring stars, baubles, presents and more now lighting up a series of parks and streets throughout the town centres.

Mandurah Canals

Each year, the winding waterways of Mandurah's marina are transformed into a sparkling, kaleidoscopic  Christmas trail , with more than 200 homes absolutely glitzed to the nines in their festive best. The best way to see it all is by boat, so go ahead and hop aboard a Chrissy canal cruise or hire your own private charter.

Kaya/hello, I’m Wendy, a Londoner who has called Perth home for over 20 years. Christmas is a favourite time of year for me and my family.

As the nights stretch longer and the soft scent of summer wafts through the air, one event signifies the holiday season like no other here: the annual Perth Christmas lights .

Let’s be honest: Our corner of the globe may lack the winter wonderland vibes that usually come to mind when thinking of Christmas—no snowflakes, no winter coats, and no hot cocoa or mulled wine by the fireplace.

But I stillenjoy seeing the Christmas light display which is magical. Perth City and its suburbs transform into a twinkling tapestry of colours, bringing together communities.

In this blog post, I’ll guide you through the luminous wonder of Perth’s Christmas lights. Whether you’re visiting from out of town or are a lifelong resident looking to revel in the festivities, I’ll walk you through the must-see displays and hidden spots.

Together, we’ll discover why Perth’s Christmas lights are an experience that captivates the childlike awe in all of us, locals and travellers alike.

Christmas Lights Perth City 2023

lights in the shape of a kangaroo on the perth city christmas lights trail

As we turn the corner from November to December, the annual Christmas Lights Trail is one of the most enchanting experiences that takes over Perth City.

This is not just a trail but an adventure—a festive quest that brings together families, friends, and couples to soak in the electric atmosphere that transforms the cityscape into a dazzling wonderland.

Starting off from Northbridge Plaza, the trail is a self-guided journey through iconic landmarks and hidden places in the city. Download a copy of the map to your phone.

The trail is well-designed, with walking paths suitable for people of all ages, including strollers and wheelchairs.

The Christmas Lights Trail isn’t just a random collection of bulbs and LEDs strewn about; it’s an artful spectacle illuminating Perth’s iconic landmarks innovatively. From the glistening Yagan Square to Elizabeth Quay , you’ll find a mix of Australian and traditional Christmas icons.

What sets Perth’s Christmas Lights Trail apart are the interactive experiences like light tunnels and projections on buildings. Children—and let’s be honest, adults, too—find these installations irresistibly fun, and they offer plenty of Instagrammable moments.

Of course, no adventure is complete without some indulgence. Following the trail, you’ll find various pop-up stalls offering seasonal treats and drinks.

Christmas Lights Tour

For those seeking a more interactive experience, the Peddle Perth Christmas Lights Ride is the perfect option. Hop on your bicycle and join this merry group as they pedal through the city streets, stopping at various light locations.

This tour is a unique way to experience the dazzling displays while enjoying the company of fellow Christmas enthusiasts.

Mandurah Canals Christmas Lights & Trail

When it comes to experiencing the magic and wonder of Christmas in Perth, one destination that cannot be missed is the Mandurah Canals. Known for its mesmerising display of lights that adorn the waterfront homes, this Christmas lights trail offers a truly unforgettable experience.

As you go through the canals, you’ll be greeted by a spectacular sight of beautifully decorated houses shimmering with an array of colourful lights. The festive spirit is contagious as each homeowner goes above and beyond to create their own unique and captivating light display.

In addition to the Christmas lights trail, some activities and events add to the festive atmosphere. Hop on a boat cruise and enjoy a leisurely ride along the canals, taking the lights’ beauty from a different perspective.

Book early if you plan a Christmas Lights Cruise, as the tours sell out fast.

The gardens feature enchanting light displays, illuminated pathways, and bright and colourful lights from late November to mid-January. It’s a perfect outing for the whole family, combining festive entertainment with a touch of whimsy.

Christmas Lights in the Suburbs

The magic of Christmas lights in Perth doesn’t stop in Perth CBD. The suburban neighbourhoods also put on a show, with residents brightening up their homes and gardens with beautiful displays.

Families take immense pride in decking out their homes, some beginning preparations as early as October. When dusk falls, houses come alive in a riot of colours, animated figures, and giant inflatables.

What’s beautiful about these suburban light displays is the sense of community they foster.

A few standout suburbs have earned a reputation for their grandiose displays year after year. If you’re looking for an itinerary, consider these places.

Timing and Planning

While you can certainly try a spontaneous drive-by, checking social media platforms or local websites for a compiled list of participating homes or streets is a good idea. People post times, themes, and special events, like Santa visits or charity collections.

A Word of Etiquette

Please be courteous. While enjoying the displays, remember that you are on private property. Stay on designated paths and avoid disturbing homeowners.

When driving, watch out for pedestrians and other drivers who may be distracted by the lights.

Many homes have donation boxes set up for various charities—a wonderful way to give back during the season of giving.

City vs. Suburbs: Two Unique Takes on Perth’s Christmas Light Extravaganza

louis vuitton shop window decorated for christmas in perth

From the well-planned, artistic installations in the heart of Perth City to the delightful and often surprising displays in the suburbs. Let’s delve into the features of each to help you decide where to spend your twinkling evenings this holiday season.

Perth City: A Curated Wonderland

In Perth City, Christmas lights are no casual affair. Months of planning go into the stunning displays, often executed by professional designers and artists. Expect everything to be larger-than-life, whether a towering Christmas tree or an interactive LED installation that changes as you approach.

The city lights attract crowds, creating a lively atmosphere that’s bustling with energy. Street performers, holiday-themed events, and pop-up markets add to the festive atmosphere, making it ideal for those who love social experiences.

Perth City’s Christmas Lights Trail is designed for accessibility. Whether you’re a visitor or a local without intimate knowledge of every city lane, you’ll find plenty of signs, maps, and apps to guide you through the sparkling maze.

Suburban Perth: A Heartfelt Tapestry

While the city lights are breathtaking, the suburban displays have heart. These are labours of love by individual families and sometimes entire neighbourhoods. You’ll see hand-painted signs, homemade decorations, and quirky themes that can be just as captivating as professional displays.

Each house or street in the suburbs often offers something unique. While one may have a snow machine and inflatable Santa, another might feature a handmade nativity scene. This diversity makes a suburban tour feel like a treasure hunt.

Don’t be surprised if the homeowners sit in their front yards, eager to chat or offer you a candy cane. This personal interaction can be a delightful aspect of the suburban Christmas light experience.

Suburban lights usually attract fewer crowds than city locations, giving you the freedom to linger and appreciate each display. It’s a relaxed, almost nostalgic experience that many people find endearing.

Or why not enjoy both magical displays and visit the city and suburban lights?

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.

Christmas gift guide to Moscow surroundings

christmas lights cruise perth

Visitors from America and Western Europe might be surprised to discover that Russia celebrates Christmas on January 7th. That’s because the Russian Orthodox Church follows the Julian calendar. After the end of the Soviet Union, some Russians have begun celebrating Christmas on December 25 in accordance with the Gregorian calendar. But many Russians still observe the tradition of fasting on January 6th, breaking the fast with a large feast on Christmas Eve after the first star has appeared in the sky.

During the Soviet era, Christmas and religious traditions were banned in Russia. Santa Claus was replaced by Ded Moroz, or, Grandfather Frost, an old man with a long white beard who would bring gifts to children on New Year’s instead of Christmas. According to Russian tradition, Ded Moroz is accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegurochka, the Snowmaiden, who helps him on his journey to give presents to children.

Although the tradition of having a Christmas tree, known as a yolka in Russian, was also banned during Soviet times, Russians got around this by having New Year’s trees from which they hung homemade decorations. Today, the restrictions of the Soviet Union have faded into history, and during the Christmas season visitors to Russia can even purchase Christmas ornaments in the shape of matryoshka dolls, or religious icons that depict nativity scenes.

Heading counterclockwise around the Golden Ring this holiday season, northeast of Moscow, your first stop will most likely be the city of Vladimir, home to some of Russia’s most striking churches and cathedrals. The Vladimir region is known for its fine crystal. Stop by the Crystal, Lacquer Miniatures, and Embroidery Museum ( 2 Bolshaya Moskovskaya ) for an overview of traditional crafts before visiting the gift shop in the museum to browse the crystal selection. Vladimir Chic ( 2 Dvoryanskaya ) also sells local glass and crystal work.

Typical souvenirs are also for sale in Vladimir’s old town, especially by the Golden Gate, a triumphal arch and defensive tower that is one of the last-remaining parts of the wall that once surrounded ancient Vladimir and a sure stop on any tour of the Golden Ring.

Just 63 kilometers from Vladimir lays the nearby city of Gus-Khrustalny , the ‘Crystal Goose,’ also home to a rich glass and crystal making tradition. You can visit the glassmaking factory in Gus-Khrustalny and buy gifts ranging from plates and vases to decanters, or visit the outlet store back in Moscow ( 4 Ilyinka ) just east of the Kremlin.

North of Vladimir, you’ll arrive in Suzdal, one of the Golden Ring route’s more tranquil towns. Suzdal boasts a number of small bazaars and stands outside the main tourist sites where visitors can purchase local honey mead, called medovukha, along with traditional crafts, like a pair valenki, or Russian woolen boots, which make an ideal Christmas gift for friends and family back home. The shopping stands outside Suzdal’s Museum of Wooden Architecture and Peasant Life ( Ul. Pushkarskaya ) are also highly recommended. Market Square ( Torgovaya Pl ) houses a number of shops where visitors can search for arts and crafts.

Following the Golden Ring north of Suzdal, many tours will stop in the city of Kostroma, a former trading outpost on the immense Volga River. One of the city’s highlights is the Museum of Linen and Birchbark ( 38 Tereshkova ), where visitors can view exhibits on traditional Russian crafts woven from flax and bark. A gift shop in the basement sells tablecloths, napkins, baskets, linen dolls, and traditional clothing typical of the region.

South from Kostroma, stop in the city of Rostov-Veliky for enamel jewelry, a craft which allows artists to produce small paintings on metal that are then fired to produce a thin glaze over the image. Rostov became famous for its tradition of enamel work. Today, visitors can purchase rings, earrings, bracelets, brooches, and jewelry boxes in the gift shop of the Rostov Enamel factory ( 3 Borisoglebskoye Highway ).

While you’re in Rostov, visit the House of Crafts ( 16 Vtoraya Tolstovskaya Naberezhnaya ) for local pottery and the Souvenirs shop ( 5 Ul. Kamennyi Most ) for ushanka hats—Russian fur caps with earflaps—paintings, and samovars for tea lovers.

The last two stops on a tour of the Golden Ring are the cities of Pereslavl-Zalesskiy and Sergiev Posad. Pereslavl is most famous for its embroidery work, available at the Art Salon ( 12 Ul. Sovetskaya ) along with souvenirs made of wood and stone. Nearby Sergiev Posad is considered the place where Russia’s matryoshka dolls were first invented, and was the chief production center of the dolls before Soviet times. Visit the city’s Toy Museum ( 123 Pr. Krasny Armii ) to get a better sense of the birthplace of one of Russia’s most recognizable toys, then head over to the market alongside the Trinity Monastery of St. Sergius—one of the city’s most important sites—to load up on matryoshka dolls, painted eggs, and icons before going home.

If you’ll be in the Golden Ring during New Years, the city of Vladimir hosts an impressive Christmas fair, with an iceskating rink and performances by local artists, in the main square ( Sobornaya Pl ). In most other Golden Ring cities you’ll find similar events in the center square as Christmas nears.

Most shops and markets in the Golden Ring are open year round. If you’re coming to Russia for a short period of time, whether in winter or summer, consider a trip to this stunning part of the country, and bring an extra bag if you plan to go shopping for Christmas gifts.
