Taylor Swift; Beyoncé; Drake

Dozens of artists hit the road during 2023 to bring their music to sold-out venues across the globe.

The first half of the year started off strong with artists and bands like Harry Styles, Journey, Carrie Underwood, SZA, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Reba McEntire, Janet Jackson, Lizzo, Blink-182, Charlie Puth, Billy Idol, Wiz Khalifa, Bebe Rexha and Black Pink heading out on their headlining tours.

Some artists had such sought-after tickets for their tours, including Taylor Swift and Beyoncé, that it led to sites, such as Ticketmaster, completely crashing when tickets dropped.

Many summer nights were also filled with good tunes this year as artists including Alicia Keys, Post Malone, Paramore, Chris Stapleton, Boygenius, Lionel Richie, Melissa Etheridge and Maggie Rogers set out on tours during the warmer months.

Concert tours are not only an opportunity for artists to promote their latest albums or to highlight their entire music catalogs, but it’s also a chance for their fans to come together to celebrate the music and musicians that they look up to and love. Those attending shows for artists such as Swift, Beyoncé and Styles often dress to impress, going all out for their outfits. Beyoncé even asked her fans to specifically come to her Virgo season concerts for her Renaissance World Tour decked out in silver and chrome, to celebrate her astrological sign. Swifties, inspired by the lyric “Make the friendship bracelets, take the moment and taste it …” from her song “You’re on Your Own, Kid,” made themed bracelets to trade and hand out to other fans at each of the stops on her Eras Tour.

The performers often praise their fans for all their love and support, like Swift writing on social media in July after her stops in Seattle, Washington, “Thank you for everything. All the cheering, screaming, jumping, dancing, singing at the top of your lungs.”

But if you missed the opportunity to see your favorite artists earlier this year, don’t worry, because The Hollywood Reporter has compiled a list of some of the most anticipated concert tours happening this fall, below.

Time to start saving up, Swifties. The news that Taylor Swift is going on her first tour in five years is exciting enough, but once you see the star-studded list of guest artists she’s bringing along for the ride, you’ll really want to purchase a ticket.

The pop star announced Tuesday (Nov. 1) that she would be embarking on The Eras Tour , a celebration of all 10 of the studio albums she’s released since 2006 — at least, that’s what the trek’s title suggests. Swift also shared a poster advertising the tour’s 27-date U.S. leg on Instagram featuring a collage of photos of herself through the years, from the time of her self-titled debut to Midnights , which dropped less than two weeks prior to the tour news.

All the Surprise Songs Taylor Swift Has Performed on The Eras Tour (So Far)

The Cats star hasn’t hit the road since 2018, when she launched her best-selling Reputation Tour. She had planned on performing again after the release of her 2019 record Lover in a concert series called Lover Fest, but canceled the shows due to the global coronavirus pandemic.

For those who are keeping count, this means that Tay has six albums-worth of new material that she’s never played live — if you include the previously unreleased vault tracks on 2021’s Fearless (Taylor’s Version) and Red (Taylor’s Version) . Studio albums Folklore, Evermore and, of course, Midnights , have all also been released in the time between Lover and the Eras Tour.

Though additional international dates won’t be announced until a later time, Swift did also reveal exactly who’s joining her during her highly anticipated return to touring. A total of nine artists make up the supporting act lineup for the tour’s first leg — with two acts slated per night to open for Tay night — and some of them are very familiar faces for the Swiftie community.

Keep reading to see who’s joining Taylor Swift on her 2023 Eras Tour below:

Taylor Swift and Paramore ‘s Hayley Williams have been friends for years, and now they’re teaming up for the Eras Tour’s kickoff show in Glendale. The “Anti-Hero” singer brought Williams out during a show on her Speak Now tour to sing “That’s What You Get” in 2011, cast her in the award-winning “ Bad Blood ” music video in 2015, and reveled in her praise of Swift’s 2021 record Evermore .

Beabadoobee

Beabadoobee

Since then, the four women have collaborated on a song together — “No Body, No Crime” on Swift’s Evermore — and joined forces again in 2022 for Swift’s “Bejweled” music video .

Artists Bands To Watch 2023

It’s that time of year again where we release our annual forecast of music artists and bands to watch in 2023. One of the many things the pandemic taught us, is that there are so many talented and unique artists out there that the whole world needs to hear. Through our new song submission playlist , we discovered a plethora of spectacular acts, many of which were not from Los Angeles. We started writing about them via our Beyond L.A. series , as well as those that had tour dates in or around L.A., but that wasn’t enough.

For the first time in almost a decade, Grimy Goods has made their annual forecast to include music artists and bands from any location, no longer just Los Angeles. We’ve been all about inclusivity since 2008, especially giving a platform for women in music, and lesser known and underrepresented artists –this new move opens up the playing the field for all. We’ll always be a Los Angeles music blog, but it doesn’t mean that we will only feature L.A.-based artists. More on that later …

With that said, check out our 25 Music Artists and Bands to Watch in 2023 (in no particular order) . We’ll be sharing 5 new acts per day, so be sure to follow along here and on our socials (@grimygoods everywhere).

Part 1 of our annual forecast is produced and written by Sandra Burciaga Olinger , with all band / artist editorials written by Steven Ward and David Sosa .

Artists and Bands to Watch in 2023 (in no particular order)

June McDoom

1. June McDoom

Explore the verdant soundscapes created by june mcdoom.

June McDoom made her debut with a self-titled EP just this year and with it made her presence known as an ethereal-voiced singer/songwriter who resides within heart-rending ballads. The verdant instrumentals that makeup songs like “Babe, You Light Me Up” and “Piano Song” unfold like cinematic centerpieces. Wrapped as they are in both the twinkle and melodic swell of every ebbing tone — not to mention McDoom’s own engulfing wails. Fans of the artist are in luck because she will be going on tour in 2023 supporting Nick Hakim with dates at The Regent in Los Angeles on Feb. 7 ; at Pappy and Harriet’s in Pioneertown on Feb. 5 ; and at the Casbah in San Diego on Feb. 4.

Visit June McDoom on their Bandcamp to stay updated on new releases and tour announcements.

Deadletter

2. Deadletter

Get rowdy with u.k. rockers deadletter.

Yorkshire-born Deadletter just released their debut EP in the form of the frantically combustive Heat! Led by the bellowing kineticism of rapt frontman Zac Lawrence, the funky post-punk outfit is no less than the sum of its parts. Which includes the elastic madness supplied by George Ullyott’s bass and Alfie Husband’s percussion, the dizzyingly electric riffs firing from James Bates and Will King’s guitars, or the ecstatic blaring of a saxophone wielded by Poppy Richler. Fans of IDLES beware: you’re going to be just as obsessed with Deadletter’s penchant for ridiculously danceable, off-kilter rhythms and incisively political anthems. “Weights” and “Binge” are two absolute jams right out the gate on the EP — but be sure to check out some of the earlier singles as well like the delectable rollicker “Pop Culture Connoisseur.” Keep an eye out for future tour dates!

Babebee shines with the blooming bedroom-pop

As a singer/songwriter, producer, and videographer, Babebee creates music designed to fully envelop you. They just released their stellar sophomore album Mind Over Matter , a radiant mix of electro-pop and bedroom sonics that escapes any single genre definition. While their debut Portal of My Soul simmers in a glimmering haze of experimental electronica that itself feels like a portal to the early days of the 00s indietronica boom. They also just shared a rework of their track “stranded” (feat. Angelus ) that absolutely needs to be in your ears. Babebee also just played their first show in New York so it can’t be long now before you have the chance to see them at a venue near you!

Visit Babebee on their Bandcamp to stay updated on new releases and tour announcements.

November Ultra

4. November Ultra

Swoon over november ultra ‘s lush vocals.

November Ultra also released her debut album this year, sharing a collection of songs titled bedroom walls that introduced the world to the lush caresses of her music. Marrying within her beautiful melodies everything from folk and R&B to 60’s musicals and Spanish copla. Her ballads comprised of the kind of opulent and soulful landscapes you could find yourself delightfully lost in over and over. She also recently shared a Christmas song for the holidays : a tender-hearted track titled “novembre” that reverberates warmly of bittersweet memories of home. They are currently touring solely in France so fingers crossed they make it to North America sometime soon!

Visit November Ultra on their website to stay updated on new releases and tour announcements.

Ill Peach

5. Ill Peach

Ill peach pummel out the bangers.

Ill Peach is the duo formed by Jess Corazza and Pat Morrissey, a frenetic electro-pop project from Los Angeles. They’ve been steadily releasing a killer round of singles the most recent being the jaunty, guitar-dueling anthem “BRIGHT LIGHTS.” Last year saw the arrival of their debut EP EXCUSE US WHILE WE FIND OUR MINDS , a paradoxically jubilant and cacophonous quartet of songs that emphatically set the duo apart. And with absurd earworms like “GUM,” it’s not hard to see why. Ill Peach just wrapped their tour opening for Everything Everything for 2022 but there’s no way we’ve seen the last of them!

Visit Ill Peach on their Bandcamp to stay updated on new releases and tour announcements.

The 44 Most Anticipated Tours of 2024: Taylor Swift, Bad Bunny, Olivia Rodrigo, and More

By Pitchfork

Mitski Burna Boy Olivia Rodrigo and more

It’s looking like a busy year for some of the world’s biggest touring artists, with packed schedules from Taylor Swift, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, Bad Bunny, Foo Fighters, the Rolling Stones, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2, Green Day, and many more. A few touring institutions, meanwhile, are just wrapping up, from Adele’s time in Las Vegas to Billy Joel’s Madison Square Garden residency and Bob Dylan’s seemingly never-ending Rough and Rowdy Ways trek. Some things, however, just never seem to change: You can expect the Ty Segalls and King Gizzards of the world to feature on these roundups till kingdom come, with reliable indie-rock staples like Destroyer, Wednesday, and Alvvays still out in force fighting for the cause, too.

After a residency that has spanned the best part of a year and brought hundreds of thousands of Adele fans to Las Vegas, the Tottenham superstar is closing the run with dates from January through June. “This residency, these shows have changed my life. I desperately needed to fall back in love with performing live again, and I have,” she said in the announcement. “It’s just made me realize how much I really enjoy being on stage, that I’m bloody good at it and that it is 100% where I belong! So let’s go one last time before I turn into a showgirl forever!” –Jazz Monroe

Tool haven’t released new music since 2019’s Fear Inoculum , but they’ve remained busy on the road. Following headlining and festival dates last year, the band has stadium and arena shows in January and February. Wondering what wild outfit Maynard James Keenan will wear this time? One can never be sure exactly what to expect from a Ty Segall show, especially here in the post–Freedom Band era. His sets can be electric and wild, acoustic and intimate, maybe a bit psychedelic. Countdown to 2024: The Top Music Artists of 2023

song artists on tour 2023

2023 gave us career-defining work from a wide range of music artists, proving that music remains a fertile ground for creativity and innovation — no matter the genre.

We broke down the top artists of 2023 and how they made their mark on the year. Whether it was with groundbreaking world tours and performances, trendsetting albums, or artful songcraft, these artists led in artistic and cultural impact. Let’s get into it.

1. Taylor Swift

From her Eras Tour, featuring sold-out stadiums packed with screaming Swifties, to her public NFL tour of sold-out stadiums watching her boyfriend, football star Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift has dominated 2023. The Eras Tour broke all kinds of box office records, becoming the highest-grossing tour ever by a female artist. In October, her concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, hit the silver screen and quickly became the highest-grossing concert film of all time. Two weeks later, she released 1989 (Taylor’s Version) , her re-recording of 2014’s 1989. The album reached the top of the charts, selling over a million copies in the first week. Seven of the singles off the album reached the top ten of the Billboard Hot 100. Only a select few legendary artists have dominated a single year quite like Taylor Swift.

SZA’s second studio album, SOS , was released in December 2022, but singles like “Snooze” and “Kill Bill” came out in 2023, with the latter becoming her first chart-topper. Also, earlier singles like “Smoking on My Ex Pack” and the soulful “Shirt” stayed on our playlists throughout 2023. The album delivered SZA’s unique mix of smoky vocals and electro-blues vibes combining soul, R&B, and hip-hop. In February, she kicked off the SOS Tour, a 90-minute showcase of the album, along with select songs from her debut album, Ctrl . Ticket sales took off, leading her team to quickly add additional dates and extend the tour into autumn.

3. Luke Combs

One of the top country music artists, North Carolina native Luke Combs released his fourth album, Gettin’ Old , in March before setting out on a supporting tour through October. The album is the singer’s most mature yet, with themes about family life and changing perspectives. Interestingly, its biggest hit was his cover of Tracy Chapman’s 1987 standout, “Fast Car,” which became his first crossover success, hitting number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and number one on the country charts. His cover version even earned Tracy Chapman a Song of the Year Award at the 2023 Country Music Association Awards, the first time a black female songwriter has ever won the award (and over 35 years after she originally wrote it). But the song was far from his only success — “Love You Anyway,” about his love for his wife, also hit number one on the country charts.

4. NewJeans

Recently making their debut in 2022, NewJeans has quickly established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the world of K-pop, along with the wider music culture at large. Their brand of sunny, R&B-tinged electropop comes with bright colors and coy smiles — and the recipe works. The band won the “Rookie of the Year” award at this year’s Korean Music Awards, along with a slew of other accolades. In August, NewJeans made their mark on history in their US live debut, becoming the first female K-pop group to perform at the Lollapalooza Festival. Soon after in November, they performed at the Billboard Music Awards . They’re even making their influence felt in the world of fashion, with a number of designers naming their wholesome style as inspirations for their own work.

5. Doja Cat

Doja Cat had a seminal year in 2023. The Los Angeles-born artist released her fourth studio album, Scarlet , in September, which reached as high as number four on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The lead single, “Paint the Town Red” — a hook-heavy rap about fame and success, layered against a laid-back beat and sample of Dionne Warwick’s “Walk on By” — became her first solo song to top the charts, hitting number one in both the US and the UK. The song has also been nominated for a 2024 Grammy Award, topping off a year that saw her launch a tour with supporting acts Ice Spice and Doechii .

6. Skrillex

The enigmatic EDM DJ and producer dropped his second studio album, Quest for Fire , in February, almost nine years after his debut album, Recess . The very next night, Skrillex released his third studio album, Don’t Get Too Close . Both albums, in different ways, show an evolution in the songwriting prowess of the innovative artist. Quest for Fire features collabs with names like Missy Elliott , British vocalist Aluna , and Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti to explore new styles and sounds, opening with the dance floor-ready song “Leave Me Like This,” before giving way to more experimental pieces like the hypnotic “Inhale Exhale.” Don’t Get Too Close , meanwhile, offers a more cohesive experience, with raps layered over shimmering synth lines and more subdued beats. Both albums show the power of EDM and one of its biggest stars.

7. Olivia Rodrigo

After the stellar year Olivia Rodrigo had in 2022 — her debut headlining tour, three Grammy Awards, including Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album — the former Disney TV star only rose higher in 2023. In June, “Vampire,” Rodrigo’s lead single from her second album, GUTS , debuted atop the Billboard Hot 100. The album itself also jumped atop the Billboard album charts, while all twelve of the album’s songs would ultimately reach the Top 40 singles chart. Next year looks just as promising, with Grammy nominations in hand for Album of the Year for GUTS , Record of the Year, and Song of the Year for “Vampire,” among other nominations, as well as talk of a potential Coachella headlining slot.

8. boygenius

The indie three-piece supergroup boygenius dropped two new records this year, their debut studio album, the record , in March, and a four-song EP, The Rest , in October. The Record is filled with their stripped-down, guitar-bass-drums sound, led with warm harmonies and introspective melodies. It’s the perfect listen for coffee houses, Sunday afternoons, and some deep reflection, and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2024 Grammy Awards. The Rest , meanwhile, continues the vibe, with earnest, well-crafted lyrics and subdued production. A slot at this year’s Coachella Festival in April gained buzz, and a musical guest appearance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live in November capped off their year in style.

9. Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” — the theme song to summer 2023’s movie blockbuster “Barbie” (featuring a soundtrack stacked with bangers) — ruled the airwaves. It brought bold disco beats back into the spotlight. In November, she dropped the first single from her upcoming third studio album, “Houdini.” It’s another disco banger, with a driving beat and an infectious melody, all capped by Lipa’s rich vocals. But the singer’s reach goes beyond music. Lipa has recently explored interests in fashion, appearing on the cover of Vogue France and the New York Times style magazine. And, in addition to a memorable cameo in Barbie , she joined the cast of the upcoming Apple Studio ensemble film, Argylle , alongside Henry Cavill and Samuel L. Jackson.

10. Eilen Jewell

Idaho-based Americana singer-songwriter Eilen Jewell released a comeback album of sorts this year, after several years of fallout from a complicated divorce (things can get dicey when your ex is both your drummer and your manager). But, if Get Behind the Wheel is a comeback, it’s also a triumph, filled with haunting lyrics, plaintive melodies, and rich instrumentation — what Jewell calls “roots noir.” It’s the kind of work she’s been producing for years, but also includes a rawer, rougher sound as well, scarred with distorted electric guitar riffs and more forceful percussion. Like the best artists, Jewell has turned personal turmoil into beautiful expression. As she says in the opening song, “Gotta get behind the wheel, you gotta drive, baby how you feel? I feel so alive.”

If you’re looking for a dose of something classic, try Laufey ’s music on for size. Her ethereal jazz-pop album, Bewitched , couldn’t have a more apt name. Listening to her twinkling, hypnotizing musicality feels like being stuck in a dream–a captive situation you’ll happily submit to for as long as possible.

The 2023 release marked her second studio album and a step up in her career. She scored her first entry on the Billboard 200 with Bewitched – the first of many to come, we anticipate. –– Alex Hopper

The queen of sad girl music has been having a pretty good year. Mitski released her recent album, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We , on September 15, with a tour planned for 2024, and has found chart success through social media and with niche groups of sad artsy girlies, as is her market. The new album feels like a culmination of Mitski’s previous work, a cohesive project that shows off how much she’s evolved since her 2012 debut Lush , which was self-released as her junior year project at SUNY Purchase.

“This is my most American album,” Mitski has said of The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We. She has a vague Midwestern American vibe that swirls around this album like a twister, calling to mind dogs running through fields, wild horses, and blood-orange sunsets There’s an abundance of love on this album as well, like bushels of wheat after a good harvest.

Opening on the ethereal “Bug Like an Angel” ( Did you go and make promises you can’t keep? / Well, when you break them they break you right back ) and closing on the short and sweet self-love ode “I Love Me After You” ( Streets are mine / the night is mine / all my own / how I love me after you / king of all the land / I’m king of all the land ), in between Mitski creates wounds in one breath and heals them in another. Life is love, and love is the land, and the land is inhospitable. But, so are we. — Lauren Boisvert

23. Tyler Childers

This year marked another pivotal chapter in Tyler Childers ’ ever-evolving career. The acclaimed singer/songwriter spent much of 2023 on the road in support of Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven? , his country and gospel project from the previous year. After months of selling out venues across the U.S. and beyond, Childers surprised fans with a brand-new record.

His sixth studio album, Rustin’ In the Rain , is a treasure trove of powerful story songs and captivating covers. The LP’s lead single, “In Your Love,” was accompanied by a stirring music video that follows the secret relationship of two male coal miners. The emotional short film echoed the song’s poetic theming but also served as a timely statement of acceptance from the Kentucky native. — Lorie Liebig

22. The Beatles

Have you heard about the upstart British boy band The Beatles that recently topped the U.K. singles chart with their new song, “ Now and Then? ” Seriously though, for a group that’s been broken for more than 50 years, and whose two surviving members—Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr—are both in their 80s, the Fab Four’s enduring success and popularity are truly impressive.

The creation of “Now and Then” spans more than 40 years, beginning with a cassette demo that John Lennon recorded in his home at the Dakota building in New York during the late 1970s. In the 1990s, surviving Beatles McCartney, Starr, and George Harrison reunited to try to finish the song for The Beatles Anthology compilation series, but the track was shelved because of issues with the audio quality of Lennon’s vocals.

Fast forward to the 2020s: Thanks to technology developed by director Peter Jackson’s creative team for use in The Beatles: Get Back docuseries, Lennon’s vocals were able to be lifted cleanly from the “Now and Then” demo. McCartney and Starr then returned to the studio to record additional parts, which, along with a new string arrangement, were added to the track to complete it.

“Now and Then” was released on November 2 and quickly shot to the top of the U.K.’s Official Singles Chart, while debuting at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. Also in November, expanded 50th-anniversary editions of The Beatles’ 1962-1966 and 1967-1970 compilations, aka “The Red Album” and “The Blue Album,” were released, with “Now and Then” among the tracks added to the latter anthology.

McCartney and Starr also worked together on a couple of other high-profile recording projects that were released in 2023. McCartney wrote a song called “Feeling the Sunlight” for Starr’s latest EP, Rewind Forward , and contributed vocals and bass to the track, and the two Beatles buddies also are featured on a new version of the Fab Four classic “Let It Be” that Dolly Parton recorded for her Rockstar album. If that wasn’t enough, McCartney played bass on a new Rolling Stones song, “Bite My Head Off,” that appeared on that band’s new album, Hackney Diamonds .  — Matt Friedlander

It’s been over a decade since Irish singer/songwriter Hozier first charmed listeners with his anthemic hit “Take Me to Church,” but 2023 marked his most successful year yet. His stunning third album, Unreal Unearth , arrived in August to widespread and much-deserved acclaim.

The project finds the 33-year-old songsmith expanding upon his previous work’s mystical, enchanting soundscapes. Crafted during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, Hozier found inspiration from Dante’s Inferno , along with the passion and pain that emerges from devastating heartbreak.  His insightful and poetic style of lyricism, brought to life through rich and engulfing vocals, has made Hozier a global phenomenon. Following a year filled with sold-out performances, a stellar collaboration with Noah Kahan, and a No. 1 album, few artists will enter 2024 with as much to celebrate as Hozier. — Lorie Liebig

20. boygenius

The future is bright for this supergroup trio. Not only do they stand for female empowerment, friendship, and musical talent, but boygenius are prolific, already releasing three records in their short handful of years together, including two albums this year—the trio’s debut studio LP, The Record , and the follow-up EP, The Rest .

Comprised of standout solo artists in their own right, Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers, and Lucy Dacus, boygenius landed in the cultural zeitgeist in 2018 with their debut self-titled EP. Since then, they’ve shined on stages for Saturday Night Live and garnered multiple Grammy nominations. If anyone is worried about the future of music, don’t be, boygenius has it under control.

For an example of the trio of friends’ talent, look no further than the track, “Cool About It,” from The Record . The songs display expert harmonies, lyrical prowess, and a sense of friendship and togetherness that more thrown-together groups could never touch. — Jake Uitti

19. Macklemore

It’s rare for any artist to have a Diamond-certified song. Even rarer to release two. But that’s exactly what Macklemore boasts, along with his longtime collaborator, producer Ryan Lewis. But the Seattle-born rapper is not just a two-hit wonder. His solo albums— Gemini (2017) and Ben (2023)—include massive hits like “Glorious” and “Chant,” the latter of which appeared on his solo record released this year.

As a lyricist, Macklemore walks a fine line between sentimentality and constructive statement. But no matter what words are dripping from his tongue, the songwriter is unafraid to explicate his feelings, how his heart feels, and what he hopes for the future. A businessman, too, Macklemore is a staple in the Pacific Northwest, a co-owner of Seattle’s hockey team and other local franchises.

But all of that success is rooted in his hits. On Ben , Macklemore recruited iconic hip-hop producer DJ Premier and up-and-comer Tones and I. This range of guest appearances is a testament to his love of music history and his knack for keeping an ear out for new talent. A recent American Songwriter cover star, Mack is a bright light in rap. — Jake Uitti

18. Dua Lipa

Dua Lipa ’s star has been on a steady rise since the release of her 2020 album, Future Nostalgia . Her retro-tinged, club-ready musicality has produced countless hits. Her most recent is “Dance The Night.” The Barbie soundtrack offering was released this year to great appeal. The song could find a comfortable home on any of Lipa’s records but shines particularly bright against the backdrop of the lauded film. With that song alone, Lipa has amassed a Golden Globe nomination and a Grammy nod. We have no doubt there is more where those came from. – Alex Hopper

17. Lana Del Rey

It feels like Lana Del Rey keeps getting better and better as the years pass. She’s recently been nominated for five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year for her latest offering Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd. This album deftly blends Del Rey’s iconic breathy, ethereal sound with more sophisticated lyricism, as she seems to have grown beyond the youthful Lolita-cherry-sadness of her earlier albums and moved into a space that holds a darker, grown-up, melancholy yearning.

There are still elements of the old Lana that have stayed, and this isn’t to say there’s a clear shift from young Lana to current Lana. But, it seems that, after the release of her poetry book in 2020, her lyrics took on a subtle new artistry as well. It’s in simple lines like Don’t forget me / Like the tunnel under Ocean Boulevard , or It’s not about having someone to love me anymore / This is the experience of being an American whore.

Her lyrics have always seemed to match her whispery, sultry voice, but the youthful abandon of her earlier work has been stripped away to reveal the raw nerves of Del Rey’s adulthood. On early tracks like “Gods and Monsters” and “Born to Die,” there was a hint of warning . Now, she seems to have settled into her womanhood, leaving the girl of her debut work behind and found a poetic voice to match. — Lauren Boisvert

16. Dolly Parton

There’s likely never been a time in Dolly Parton ’s career where she hasn’t been considered a top artist in the field, and 2023 is no different. Everything Parton touches turns to gold, whether it’s her debut rock album or her performance at the Dallas Cowboys’ Thanksgiving Halftime Show.

Fresh off her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022, Parton dropped Rockstar , proving that she is the only one with the magnitude to compel nearly every living rockstar to appear on the album including Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Elton John, and Steven Tyler. Parton’s charming wit and undeniably brilliant songwriting made for another golden year—and we’re all better for it.   — Cillea Houghton

Everything comes full circle. For U2 , the band’s seventh album, Achtung Baby , resurfaced in one of the most spectacular, spherical settings. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the 1991 album, the band regrouped in Las Vegas, Nevada in September 2023 for a four-month residency. That residency has since been extended through February 2024 at the newly opened Sphere at The Venetian Resort.

Set on a turntable-shaped stage, inspired by an earlier design by the band’s longtime producer and collaborator Brian Eno , U2 has played through the entirety of Achtung Baby . The visual and sensory show is the first of its kind, surrounding the band and the crowd with walls of LED imagery within the interior of the Sphere, powered by 160,000 speakers and more than 260 million video pixels.

Earlier in 2023, U2 also commemorated the band’s more than four decades together by reimagining 40 of their songs on Songs of Surrender . Helmed by Bono and The Edge , the collection stripped back the majority of the songs to their barest form with nothing more than acoustic guitar and piano, along with some refreshes to lyrics.

A day before U2 kicked off their residency at Sphere in late September, the band also released a new song, “ Atomic City .” Produced by Jacknife Lee and Steve Lillywhite, “Atomic City” is a magnetic ode to the burgeoning Vegas during its 1950s entertainment and tourism boom. The video for the song brought the band back to the Vegas streets, on Freemont, where they filmed the video for “ I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For ” in 1987, and offers a fragment of what’s to come with a forthcoming album from the band in 2024. — Tina Benitez-Eves

14. The Rolling Stones

You can’t always get what you want, but if what you wanted was for The Rolling Stones to release a great new studio album in 2023, well, you got that. September saw the arrival of Hackney Diamonds , The Stones’ first new collection of original songs in more than 18 years. The 12-track album not only received generally great reviews, it was also a commercial success, debuting at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and becoming the British band’s 14th chart-topper in their U.K. homeland.

Hackney Diamonds featured a set of songs that reflected many of the various musical styles that the band had explored over the course of its 60-plus-year career, from hard rock to pop to country to blues to soul. The album also included guest appearances by several noteworthy artists, among them Paul McCartney, Elton John, Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, and former Stones bassist Bill Wyman. In addition, the album boasted two tracks featuring longtime Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, who died in August 2021 at age 80.

The Stones celebrated Hackney Diamonds ’ release in October at a surprise, invite-only club show in New York City where they gave four songs from the album their live debut. For the finale, Lady Gaga joined Mick Jagger and the boys for a soulful rendition of the tune she recorded for Hackney Diamonds , “Sweet Sounds of Summer.”

Meanwhile, Hackney Diamonds ’ lead single, “Angry,” was nominated for a 2024 Grammy in the Best Rock Song category. The Stones also have announced plans to support the album on a 2024 North American tour that runs from April to July. — Matt Friedlander

13. Olivia Rodrigo

Olivia Rodrigo proved why she’s one of the brightest young acts in pop music in 2023. Still riding high from the massive achievements of her debut hit “Drivers License” and subsequent debut album Sour in 2021, Rodrigo continued to build a global audience with her relatable and clever songwriting on her sophomore album, Guts . From the feisty “get him back!” to the achingly self-aware “Ballad of a Homeschooled Girl,” Rodrigo’s wildly successful year points to an even brighter future — Cillea Houghton

12. Jelly Roll

Few country artists are having as big a year as Jelly Roll . He started the year with his first No. 1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart and is going into 2024 with a pair of Grammy nominations. January saw Jelly Roll get his first No. 1 on country radio with “Son of a Sinner” from Ballads of the Broken (2021). The chart-topper set the tone for the rest of the year. “Need a Favor” from his debut country album, Whitsitt Chapel , brought him his second No. 1 on country radio followed by his third chart-topper, “Save Me” featuring Lainey Wilson.

However, 2023 brought Jelly Roll more than chart success. His Backroad Baptism Tour saw him selling out arenas and amphitheaters for the first time in his career. Additionally, he won several major genre awards. First, he won Male Video of the Year, Breakthrough Male Video of the Year, and CMT Digital-First Performance of the Year at the CMT Music Awards. Then, he won four awards at the inaugural fan-voted People’s Choice Country Awards. Those wins included Male Artist of 2023. More recently, and more impressively, he took home New Artist of the Year at the CMA Awards.

Just days after winning his first CMA Award, Jelly Roll received two Grammy nominations. He’s up for Best New Artist and Best Country Duo/Group Performance for “Save Me.” More importantly, the former rapper has found acceptance within the country music community. Artists and fans alike are embracing the humble heavily-tattooed singer/songwriter. — Clayton Edwards

11. Lainey Wilson

Lainey Wilson ’s 2023 was one for the books. The singer launched and wrapped her first-ever sold-out headlining shows in March. She’d follow suit with her debut arena show in July in the midst of joining HARDY and Luke Combs on two separate treks. By November, she was crowned CMA Entertainer of the Year, as well as took home four other trophies including Female Vocalist of the Year.

Wilson’s success is a testament to her work ethic. A road warrior, she spent the majority of the year on tour bringing her music to the masses. Bell Bottom Country , released in 2022, was a mainstay on the airwaves with “Heart Like a Truck” and “Watermelon Moonshine” both reaching No. 1 on the country charts in 2023. Her collaborations “wait in the truck” with HARDY and “Save Me” with Jelly Roll also hit the peak position. American Songwriter’s August digital cover artist, Wilson proved that hard work, authenticity, and relatable songwriting are the ticket to success. — Annie Reuter

In the R&B space, few artists hold a candle to SZA . Her sonic vocabulary is completely her own. Even the familiar facets of the genre feel completely original in her hands. SZA is as distinctive and singular as they come, from her unique vocals to her not-easily-forgotten melodies.

Taking one look at the 2024 Grammy nominees will tell you just how stellar of a year SZA has had. Her latest album, SOS , was a doozy. She leads the nominees, having secured nine nods for the project. –– Alex Hopper

9. Bad Bunny

Within six years of releasing his first charting single, “Krippy Kush,” which peaked at No. 75 on the Billboard Hot 100, Bad Bunny has become one of the most-streamed, chart-topping artists. Bad Bunny’s fourth album, Un Verano Sin Ti , released in 2022, became the top Billboard 200 album of the year after going to No. 1 where it remained for 13 weeks. Featuring collaborations with the Marias, Jhayco, and Chencho Corleone, the album also made history as the first non-English album to top the 200 chart and the first Spanish-language album to pick up a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year. Along with being named one of the Most Influential People in the World by TIME , and joining Taylor Swift as the highest-paid entertainer in 2023, Bad Bunny was also Spotify’s most-streamed artist of the year in 2020 and 2021. He wrapped up his successful year by hosting Saturday Night Live and also served as its musical guest. —Tina Benitez-Eves

8. Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran barely slowed down this year, delivering two studio albums of new material to fans. His acoustic-driven sixth record, Subtract , arrived in May and immediately soared to No. 1 in over a dozen countries. The National’s Aaron Dessner served as producer on the project, which spawned the No. 1 single “Eyes Closed.”

Sheeran and Dessner joined forces again for his surprise follow-up project, Autumn Variations . The intimate and reflective album, which dropped in September, is fittingly themed around the life changes that accompany the arrival of the fall season.

Somehow, between the creation and release of two LPs and spending time with his wife and two young daughters, Sheeran spent much of 2023 on the road. The Subtract Tour stretched across six months and took the English-born talent to arenas across the U.S., Canada, and more. In just 12 months, Sheeran has accomplished more creative feats than many artists do in a lifetime—and has shared no intentions of slowing down in 2024. — Lorie Liebig

7. Miley Cyrus

Miley Cyrus started the year off with a bang when she shared “Flowers” in January. It smashed streaming records, including being the most-streamed song in a week during its first and second week on Spotify, and was the fastest song to reach one billion streams on the platform.

She continued to build on this record-breaking success by showing us that the joy of summer never has to end with the release of her chart-topping album Endless Summer Vacation in March. The album is filled with bangers that continue to prove Cyrus to be one of the sharpest and savviest songwriters in the game. For the past 15 years, Cyrus has been a force in pop music, and she only continued to defend that title in 2023. — Cillea Houghton

6. Morgan Wallen

Morgan Wallen is nothing if not prolific. In 2023, just two years after releasing his Dangerous double album, he came back with yet another double. One Thing at a Time was the juggernaut of juggernauts this year, not just on the country charts, but as the top-selling album in any genre. Single after single crossed over, with “Last Night” breaking all kinds of records by standing atop the charts for close to four months. Perhaps it’s not too surprising, as Wallen’s big-tent approach to music, one which will see him work with the hottest pop producers on one song and then drop a killer country weeper the next, aims to draw in as many listeners as possible. Well, considering the results, 2023 was mission accomplished for Wallen. —Jim Beviglia

5. The Weeknd

This year was one of breaking records for The Weeknd . Even though The Weeknd didn’t release a new album, following Dawn FM in 2022, he still earned his seventh No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2023 with a song he originally released on his 2016 album Starboy , “Die For You,” featuring Ariana Grande . With its more than six-year journey to the top, the song broke the record for the longest climb to No. 1 for a non-holiday song.

Earlier in 2023, The Weeknd’s groundbreaking streaming numbers earned him the title of the World’s Most Popular Artist by Guinness World Records after becoming the first artist in Spotify history to reach 100 million monthly listeners (with 111.4 million as of March 2023). While breaking multiple records—and co-creating and starring in the short-lived HBO series The Idol—The Weeknd’s sold-out After Hours Til Dawn Tour also generated more than $350 million in gross sales by July 2023 . —Tina Benitez-Eves

4. Travis Scott

Travis Scott ’s 2023 was a record breaking year. The rapper’s fourth album Utopia spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. At the time of its release in July, Utopia had the best first-week sales of an album released by a hip-hop artist this year. He’d go on to surpass 75 million monthly listeners on Spotify, marking the most monthly listeners for a rapper on the streaming service. The LP also earned a Grammy nomination in the Best Rap Album category. The rapper’s successes only continued with a tour announcement and an album release show at Circus Maximus in Rome, Italy. The high-energy performance was so disruptive with fans jumping that locals mistook the concert for an earthquake . At the time, seismologist Giovanni Diaferia insisted the show was equal to a 1.3 magnitude earthquake. Suffice it to say, Scott’s banner year was seismic. — Annie Reuter

This year marked yet another major achievement for the iconic Colombian artist Shakira . Many saw her on the MTV stages, shaking her famous hips and spreading her signature joy as she won the coveted 2023 Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. Truly, the South American singer boasts decades of  wows  in videos for songs like “Hips Don’t Like” and “Whenever, Wherever.”

Like a fine bottle from the Casa Grajales winery, Shakira seems to only get better with age, adding depth and robustness to her already eye-opening sonic flavors. This year, too, Shakira released the single “Shakira: Bzrpo Music Sessions, Vol 53,” which hit No. 1 in 16 counties and broke Spotify and YouTube records. She also featured on newcomer Karol G’s hit single, “TQG,” which hit No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. But these are just more trophies to add to the glorious collection of accomplishments of one of the most recognizable performers on Earth.  — Jake Uitti

The Canadian rapper manages to draw attention even when he’s not doing much in the way of releasing music or touring. Needless to say, when Drake is as active as he was this year, he maintains a pretty powerful hold on both his deep fan base and casual observers alike. The main attraction was the October release of his eighth studio album. For All the Dogs , featuring a lead single in “Slime You Out” with SZA that topped the charts. The deluxe edition of the album added even more good stuff to an album that already clocked in at 23 songs. There were also a few other surprise single drops and collaborations, out-of-nowhere podcast appearances, controversies and beefs (this is Drake after all) and a tour that was one of the most successful of any this year. Will he slow down in ’24? Even if he does, you probably won’t be able to look away. —Jim Beviglia

1. Taylor Swift

2023 is Taylor Swift ’s year. No one could convince us of the contrary. Swift’s star somehow got even brighter this year. We didn’t think she had any room left to grow, but she proved us wrong. She has long been able to boast of being one of the biggest artists in the world, but 2023 turned that musing into an indisputable fact.

What Were the Top Songs of 2023? — Here’s a Peek at the Best-Selling Singles Last Year

Top Songs of 2023

IFPI announces the winner of the Global Single Award for 2023, while DMN takes a peek at the top songs and best-selling singles of the year.

It’s 2024, (wow, already?) and recorded music industry organization IFPI has announced the winner of the IFPI Global Single Award for 2023. The award is presented to the artist with the world’s best-selling single of the year across all digital formats, including paid subscription streaming, ad-supported platforms, and single-track downloads. Here’s the winner, as well as the other top contenders for best-selling singles of the year.

Miley Cyrus’ “ Flowers ” swooped in for the No. 1 spot in this year’s IFPI Global Single Chart — her first appearance in the organization’s Top 10. The track, which won two Grammy Awards, was released in January 2023 and hit No. 1 simultaneously in 29 markets worldwide. It finished the year at the top of the 2023 charts in markets such as the UK, France, and Australia.

The Top 10 also saw first-ever IFPI Global Chart appearances for artists from Nigeria, with Rema’s “Cam Down” featuring Selena Gomez at No. 2, and Mexico, with Yng Lvcas and Peso Pluma’s “La Bebe” at No. 6. These tracks reflect the global rise of Regional Mexican and Afrobeats throughout the year.

Meanwhile, IFPI Global Recording Artist of the Year, Taylor Swift, appeared twice in the Top 10, with “Anti-Hero” at No. 9 and “Cruel Summer” at No. 7 — the latter released in 2019, but saw a massive resurgence in popularity thanks to its feature at Swift’s record-breaking Eras Tour.

“We are delighted to present the IFPI Global Single Award to Miley Cyrus, who produced the song of 2023 with ‘Flowers,’” says Lewis Morrison, Director of Global Charts & Certifications at IFPI. “Topping the charts in so many countries simultaneously, the song — along with its message of empowerment — resonated across the world and is the definition of a truly global hit. Congratulations to Miley and her team for this incredible achievement.”

“It is also fantastic to see so many nationalities and genres represented in the IFPI Global Single Chart,” Morrison continues. “It is a wonderful reflection of the wide range of extraordinary artists that — working in partnership with their record labels — are finding international success.”

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Has Already Made History 13 Times

And she’s not even halfway done yet.

Taylor Swift Broke These Records With The Eras Tour

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour is reaching its halfway point, nearly a year after she kicked off her global trek in March 2023. And it’s already made the history books. The singer started breaking records on opening night — literally — and has reached new heights at nearly every stop along the way.

Few world tours have had the same impact as Swift’s. It has been a huge boost for the global economy, with the U.S. Travel Association estimating that the tour has generated more than $5 billion for local economies.

Its success was also a huge factor in making Swift a self-made billionaire . Given that it’s not even over yet, there’s no telling how much more money it could generate.

Here are all of the records that Swift has broken with the Eras Tour... so far.

The First Billion-Dollar Tour

Taylor Swift on The Eras Tour

The Eras Tour became the highest-grossing tour of all time before it was even halfway finished. While Swift’s team doesn’t plan to report box office numbers as many artists do, Pollstar estimated she grossed over a billion dollars, making her the first artist ever to hit that milestone in a single tour.

Guinness World Records made it official in December after Swift concluded the 2023 leg. Since she’s playing shows through 2024, Variety estimates that the number could rise to an astounding $2 billion by the tour’s end.

Swift takes the record from Elton John, whose Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour became the biggest tour to date in January 2023. His years-long trek ended in July 2023, and made $939 million over 328 shows. To put Swift’s achievement in context, she broke the record after performing 66 shows out of a planned 152 shows.

Her Concert Movie Broke 2 Records

Taylor Swift at Eras Tour movie premiere

The Eras Tour domination didn’t end with concert ticket sales — it translated to the movie theater box office. After concluding the first North American leg in August, Swift announced that her Eras Tour concert movie would premiere in theaters that October. The film earned $37 million in presales on its first day alone and broke AMC’s single-day advance ticket sales record before it even came out.

It didn’t take long for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour to be crowned the highest-grossing concert film of all time, with AMC reporting a week before the film premiered that it had already reached $100 million in advance sales . This was enough to beat the previous record-holder, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never .

An Unprecedented Golden Globe Nomination

Taylor Swift attends 2024 Golden Globes

At the 2024 Golden Globes, Swift’s Eras Tour movie was nominated for Best Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, making it the first concert film to ever be nominated for a Golden Globe . Sure, it got the nod in a brand new category that was practically tailor-made for a movie like Swift’s.

The Eras Tour film was up against other successful box office movies, like Barbie , Oppenheimer , and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, but it eventually lost out to Barbie .

The Biggest Concert For A Female Artist

Taylor Swift performs during The Eras Tour

When Swift performed her first Eras Tour show in Glendale, Ariz., on March 17, 2023, she broke the record for highest attended concert by a female artist in the U.S., with over 69,000 tickets sold . Naturally, she’s went on to break her own record multiple times over the course of the U.S. leg.

She Shattered 8 Venue Attendance Records

Taylor Swift performs during The Eras Tour

Swift has broken attendance records at multiple stadiums worldwide, another sign of the tour’s demand. In the U.S., she achieved the biggest single-day attendance at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium with 71,000 people, Pittsburgh’s Acrisure Stadium with 73,117 fans, and Seattle’s Lumen Field with 72,171 attendees.

Even more impressively, Swift was able to set three-day attendance records at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, with 210,607 people, and New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium with 217,635 fans.

So far, she’s faring just as well overseas, setting both one-day and three-day attendance records at Sao Paolo’s Allianz Parque, and breaking the three-day record at Melbourne’s Cricket Ground with 288,000 fans, which were the largest shows of her entire career .

Bad Bunny goes full-on Western in his first 'Most Wanted' San Francisco show

S an Francisco’s Chase Center was lit up with hard-core Bad Bunny fans on Friday night as he delivered a radiant, unforgettable show that included a full-on orchestra and a real-life horse.

Benito Martínez Ocasio, who is known as Bad Bunny, performed his first of two nights in San Francisco on his “Most Wanted” tour. This was the artist’s first tour stop in San Francisco, as he was last seen by California fans in the desert at Coachella in 2023 and Oakland Arena in 2022 . It was going to be hard to top his iconic “World’s Hottest Tour,” where the Puerto Rican artist performed songs from the prized and tropical album of the summer of 2022, “Un Verano Sin Ti.” Fans were unsure of what to expect, but were not left disappointed.

On Friday night, Bad Bunny showed San Francisco that he can do anything.

The superstar gave fans a mostly trap-style performance, which was expected after he dropped a trap album that fans begged for in October, “Nadie Sabe Lo Que Va a Pasar Mañana.” The fifth studio album was for his real fans, as he states in Nadie Sabe, his first song on the album, “This record ain’t to be played, not a billion times over. It’s to make my real fans happy.”

After a soothing and captivating orchestra played for a few minutes, Bad Bunny’s silhouette became prominent on the stage as he opened with “Nadie Sabe.”

In the suspenseful entrance, the 29-year-old star stood in the middle of the stage wearing a backward baseball cap, grasping the microphone, surrounded by smoke. The arena brightened to the cues of the music — on entry, attendees were given a little necklace with a Western boot that lit up on cue.

Afterward, fans in mostly Western-style outfits sang along to one of his most popular songs on the newest album, “Monaco.” The show went into full force quickly with fireworks and special effects fueling the audience’s already hyped-up energy. The crowd was nearly falling out of their seats and losing their cowboy hats as they went crazy for Benito.

The artist then continued on with several hits from the new album, including “Hibiki,” “Mr. October” and “Baticano.”

Surrounded by talented and smooth dancers, who did multiple outfit changes, Benito didn’t give Chase Center a second to breathe during his captivating performance of his new trap hits.

In the second act, the artist continued with a few more songs from “Nadie Sabe Lo,” but then transitioned to a moment the fans were waiting for.

After a Western montage, Bad Bunny reentered the stage on a huge brown horse from the corner of the area. Once he got off the horse, the anticipation was real to see what he would do next.

The music stopped and the big screen focused on Benito, who didn’t say a word but put his fingers to his eyes, a famous hand gesture that goes back to his OG days.

Once fans saw the hand gesture, they automatically knew they were getting treated to some older Bad Bunny songs and they subsequently went nuts. People, including myself, did the famous hand gesture back to him and screamed at the top of their lungs.

He went on to perform a handful of fan favorites, some of which even trace back as far as 2016, including “Tú no Metes Cabra,” “Pa Ti” and “No Te Hagas.”

One of the biggest moments of the second act, though, was when audiences heard the infamous “Ba ba ba ba...” signaling that he was going to perform “Chambea.” Bad Bunny ran back and forth on a floating stage, surrounded by gusts of fire, beaming lasers and contagious energy, saying, “Chambea, ¡jala!”

After an amazing second act, the star settled down and sang an a cappella version of “Un x100to” that had the audience singing and crying along. With Bad Bunny sitting on a grand piano, it was hard not to admire his vocal talent and the beauty of the song as I choked on tears.

Benito checked in on fans multiple times during his show, shouting out San Francisco and asking if we were having a good time.

“It’s OK to not know how you feel sometimes,” he said to the audience in Spanish. The beloved star said he uses music to help him understand how he feels and encouraged the audience to have a good night.

“I understand how it feels sometimes to wake up and not feel your best sometimes ... and not feel understood,” he said.

The Latin King then continued on to his next act, where he played a highly anticipated mix of perreo songs that included “Safaera” and “Yo Perreo Sola.” I could hardly hold on to my light-up necklace as it swung around during our perreo-behavior.

“Where are my Latin women of San Francisco?” the Puerto Rican rapper shouted. Subsequently, the arena went wild with screams of excitement.

In an extra-special treat, Benito finished off his show-stopping performance with two songs from his “Un Verano Sin Ti” album: “Efecto” and “Me Porto Bonito,” reminding us fans of the good ol’ days of summer 2022.

The show then ended with “Where She Goes,” a song first released as a single in May 2023 that first introduced us to his new Western-style era.

Fans were sad to see him go, but Benito walked off the stage knowing that he’d given long-standing fans a to-die-for performance, well-rounded with highlights from his new album, without shying away from his roots.

Bad Bunny will perform at Chase Center for a second night on Saturday and will continue to Sacramento’s Golden 1 Center on Tuesday.
