Tauck's river cruise from Vienna to Prague is a lesson in the art of travel

The old town of Regensburg is a medieval gem on the Danube.

A six-day Danube river sailing from Vienna to Prague infused with art and history proves a winning combination when it comes to enriching travel experiences.

“If you could please wait here, I will just go and get the keys to the castle,” says Oldřiška Baloušková with complete nonchalance. No big deal, it’s just how things happen on a Tauck trip: your guide gets the keys to the Český Krumlov Castle, one of the best preserved Baroque and medieval fortresses in the Czech Republic.

That one sentence encapsulates what I believe is the art of travel: context, expertise and access. Travellers are motivated by a desire to learn, experience and feel. But it can be a frustratingly shallow experience if there is a lack of access to the important sights or institutions. Or if that expertise simply provides the information without context and insight. That is what makes my seven nights from Vienna to Prague along the Danube so magical.

The cruise begins in Vienna, one of the great cities of Europe.

Inside Vienna

This is my third trip to Vienna . Previous visits have been in the height of summer for about four or five days. But the Austrian capital rockets to the top of my must-visit European cities during this 36-hour stay in late autumn. And that’s largely thanks to the guides who provided exclusive access, context and insight.

Local expert Maria navigates the thousands of artworks at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien so expertly in three hours that I am filled with a new wonder and appreciation for the collection. She has clearly spent many hours navigating the rooms and studying the artworks; my fellow guests and I profit greatly from her previous toil.

Art lover’s guide

Classic Baroque masterpieces that seemed ridiculously irrelevant in Australian classrooms spring to life: Rubens, Dürer, Brunel, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Tintoretto, Raffaello, Titian. Maria expertly reveals their mastery, importance and context. Johannes Vermeer’s The Art of Painting  is particularly surprising and intriguing.

Only 34 of Vermeer’s works are still in existence and The Art of Painting is not only one of the most well-known and largest, but most treasured by the artist. He never sold it even as his debts mounted.

Its provenance is a story in and of itself. Later sold to Hitler for his Führermuseum in Linz, the work was stored in the salt mines as the tide of war turned against the Nazis. The painting was given to the Kunsthistorisches after the Second World War. The family who sold it to Hitler contested its sale after the war and sought restoration, however it was found to be a fair sale (Hitler reportedly paid top dollar for it).

That is the context and insight that makes this travel experience enriching and meaningful. And it lasted for three hours and then for six more days.

River cruise highlights

I haven’t experienced anything that encapsulates the art of travel quite like this cruise does. I don’t say that lightly. The ship itself is wonderful, even if a little overshadowed by the excursions.

the Tauck ship sailing along the Danube

A Tauck ship sails along the Danube.

My room is spacious, and I watch the vines, castles, towns and forests glide by with the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors open. The lounge is the social centre, where the knowledgeable tour directors share presentations on the art, culture and history of the communities through which we sail. The bar is always open and, being all-inclusive, pre-dinner Champagne and top-shelf local wine with dinner adds to the wonder. Each dinner is a fine affair and, while lunch onboard is rare (you are typically exploring the town du jour), the buffet has a huge variety, which means the relatively small number of guests all find something that suits their tastes.

For the time being, Maria bids us farewell and we are welcome to roam the streets of Vienna. I wander back across the Ringstrasse (which I believe to be the grandest boulevard in Europe) and into the medieval centre of the city to re-caffeinate and contemplate at Demel, one of the more historic coffeehouses in Vienna, before feasting at Zum Schwarzen Kameel for lunch. This Viennese institution has been selling food and exotic spices since 1619. That is some history. Lunch is a perfect wiener schnitzel with potato salad washed down with beer and a bottle of Grüner Veltliner.

Dinner in Vienna is another moment of incredible access. The Palais Pallavicini is a Neoclassical palatial residence built between 1782 and 1784 opposite the Spanish Riding School and not open to the public. Tauck guests are given an exclusive tour of this architectural jewel. Sinead, the incredibly knowledgeable tour director, sidles up to tell me how the staircases in these palatial homes are called imperial staircases. They are wide with shallow rise height so women in their hooped ballgowns would appear to float up and down the stairs. I love this constant flow of knowledge.

After a pre-dinner prosecco, we feast on traditional Viennese dishes and wine in the gilded stucco ballroom with fantastic parquetry floors. We are entertained between courses by a chamber orchestra, opera singers and a  pas de deux  (ballet duet). It is a night of palatial fantasy.

Unlocking the experience

Two days after this unforgettable evening, Oli returns with the keys, and they look exactly like castle keys should: ornate and oversized. The 600-room Český Krumlov Castle is a result of centuries of renovations and additions and is now a collection of 40 buildings constructed from the 12th to 17th centuries.

After Oli unlocks the door, we climb a small set of steps (definitely not an imperial staircase) to enter the colourful and lively Masquerade Ballroom. The Baroque frescoes depict a range of masquerade characters and bend the barrier between fantasy and reality in the candlelit space. So much so, that some guests reportedly had conversations with these portraits before realising why the conversation was relatively one-sided.

From the ballroom we traverse the Cloak Bridge. The three-storey hallway sits atop an imposing 40-metre-high stone arched bridge that connects the lower castle and ballroom to the upper castle and its greatest feature: the most well-preserved Baroque theatre in the world. The 18th-century set dressings are still in situ and create such an illusion that you can feel how magical a performance would have been to guests who have never experienced electricity, let alone broadcast media.

Oli takes us under the stage for exclusive access to the restored machinery. Huge wheels connect to ropes and stages that would have been used to move items and objects around on stage. Some of the machine’s purpose or actions are still a mystery to theatre historians.

After the castle tour, Oli steers us through the streets of Český Krumlov before leaving us to enjoy lunch in one of the many local restaurants on our own. By retaining elements of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque eras of history and sliced in two by the bubbling Vlata River before it makes its way to Prague, the town is of such incredible beauty that it’s one of the most visited in the country.

Musikverein, the traditional concert hall in Vienna

Musikverein is Vienna’s centre for classical music.

I count my blessings I am here in the first week of November as there are few other visitors and not hordes of sharp-elbowed tourists rushing around. Sure, I visualise how sitting on the banks of the river in the beer garden on a summer’s evening would be sublime. But a feast of pork knuckle, sausages and meat cooked over woodfired coals in the cave-like restaurant is an equally delightful experience that would be wasted in summer.

Small moments

I do get an afternoon of feasting and drinking beer in the sun in Regensburg, a Bavarian city with a gem of a medieval old town. After exploring on yet another highly informative walking tour, I am drawn to the Historic Sausage Kitchen. The small squat building was originally a kitchen to feed the workers on the strategically significant stone bridge across the Danube. Built in the 12th century, the bridge created an important trade route from Venice to the north of Europe and so the city became incredibly wealthy and home to many of Europe’s richest merchants.

the old town of Regensburg on the Danube

And thankfully, 867 years later, the Historic Sausage Kitchen is still serving food. The small pork sausages are the size of a Mont Blanc pen and come in plates of six, eight or 10 with sauerkraut and baskets of small dinner rolls. The tradition is to smother the sausages in the sweet mustard Regensburg is famous for. Three of us manage to devour 20 sausages and three steins of beer in what is a magical al fresco moment.

I would never have visited Regensburg or Česky Krumlov if left to my own devices. I would never have appreciated the Dutch masters if I wandered the Kunsthistorisches Museum on my own. The key to such a special experience was in the expertise and access of others.

The Top River Cruise Lines

Top River Cruises

Courtesy of Viking River Cruises

Not one for the high seas? Explore the world along its rivers instead.

If you'd like to take a cruise but aren't interested in the hustle and bustle of a massive ocean liner, consider a river cruise. River cruises offer the chance to visit lesser-known ports around the world, thanks to the small size and maneuverability of the vessels. These sailings are known to provide exceptional, personalized service, as most welcome fewer than 200 guests at a time. On top of that, you'll spend the majority of your trip exploring a different port each day, as most destinations along the waterways are fairly close together.

Read on to discover the best river cruise lines around the world, with details about where they sail, the number of passengers you can expect onboard, a snapshot of amenities and experiences, and sentiment from recent travelers.

Other amenities and activities span guest lectures, cooking demonstrations, musical performances, libraries, outdoor decks and more. Select Viking riverboats are also equipped with swimming pools, while cabins feature minibars, premium toiletries, purified water and TVs.

On board, you can expect to find mostly English-speaking passengers. Viking's price point generally attracts older crowds in the 55-plus age group, and travelers must be at least 18 years old to cruise on the line.

Side view of CroisiEurope Cruises river cruise ship.

Helwin Goetzinger | Courtesy of CroisiEurope

Number of passengers: 22 to 200 Sails to:  Europe, Asia, Africa

CroisiEurope is a family-run French cruise line that has been in business since 1976. This line has more than 50 ships and barges that sail to countries around the world, including Egypt, Cambodia and Spain . Unusual in river cruising, the line operates two custom-built ships that sail on Lake Kariba in southern Africa. Additionally, CroisiEurope has a division that sells barge cruises throughout France on six different canals, such as Burgundy or Provence.

What to expect: CroisiEurope is known for its wide range of destinations and is one of the only river cruise lines that operates custom-built ships on Germany 's Elbe river, the Guadalquivir and Guadiana rivers in Spain and Portugal, and Venice 's canals. Onboard accommodations are relatively basic, which keeps the cruise fare to a budget-friendly minimum. The cruise line aims to provide the best value for money in the cruise industry. Cuisine is focused on French food with some local flair in the main dining room, which is included in the cruise fare.

The passenger mix on a CroisiEurope cruise is relatively international, featuring large contingencies from France, Germany, the U.K. and North America. Announcements are typically given in both French and English. The cruise line sees a mix of older couples and groups as well as younger families, depending on the itinerary and time of year.

What travelers say: Several cruisers echoed that some of CroisiEurope's river ships are due for a refurbishment and that internet connectivity leaves a lot to be desired, while others maintain that the experience was superb.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Size: River cruise ships are smaller in size and the number of passengers they can accommodate, with one lounge and one main dining room being a typical setup.
  • Atmosphere: The overall vibe on a river cruise is more relaxed and far less busy than that of an ocean liner.
  • Onboard entertainment: River cruising is notoriously sleepy at night, with a focus instead on local enrichment like cooking demonstrations or liqueur tastings. Due to the busy schedule of port calls and excursions, most passengers are tired after a long day of sightseeing and don't mind a lack of nightlife.
  • Excursions: Most of your time on a river cruise is spent out exploring the destinations, which can sometimes be two stops in a single day. Passengers can choose from a variety of activities in port – including biking, kayaking and hiking – or explore the destination at a leisurely pace.
  • Cuisine: Cuisine tends to be focused on local specialties but is prepared to accommodate predominantly American tastes. Not every river cruise line offers unlimited drinks, but the majority include beer and wine at lunch and dinner, often showcasing regional varieties.
  • Price: River cruising typically comes at a much higher price point than ocean-based itineraries.
  • American Queen

Note that inclusions can vary by cruise line. For example, Viking rates – while not fully all-inclusive – cover beer and wine at meals and one tour per day, while gratuities and other drink packages are left to the discretion of the guest.

Avalon Waterways, on the other hand, offers a number of included tours in every port on select itineraries that range from cultural or culinary-focused to active.

In terms of inclusions and service ratios (the number of crew on board to guests), the following river cruise lines are considered the most luxurious:

River Cruising Is 'Having a Moment'—And Travel Advisors Are Cashing In

River cruising is becoming an increasingly popular way to travel—and travel advisors are capitalizing on the industry’s success.

“The whole genre of river cruising is having a moment,” said Zane Kerby, president and chief executive officer of the American Society of Travel Advisors (ASTA). “Americans are awakening to the idea that you can see six or seven different European cities—with all the friction of movement in between taken out—by these elegant river cruise companies.”

But don’t just take his word for it: Ask any of the U.S.-based travel advisors who attended ASTA’s River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam last week.

The sold-out event, which took place March 13-17, has grown exponentially since it launched three years ago as more and more travel advisors seek out education and connections to help boost their river cruise sales. The expo grew from 500 attendees in 2022 to more than 1,300 this year. And next year's conference—which sold out within days of registration going live—will be even larger, with 1,500 attendees.

It's clear that travel advisors see big potential in the river cruise sector.

“River cruises are confusing enough that people really appreciate my expertise,” said Diane Frisch , owner of Diane Frisch Destinations, who won the inaugural River Cruise Advisor of the Year award at the expo last week. “And attending events like this really helps increase my value because I can talk to people about all the lines. They’re all really different from one another and, yet, very few people understand that.”

Or, ask the river cruise lines themselves. They’re expanding their fleets , launching ships on new rivers and tailoring their offerings to better accommodate the growing number of North Americans who want to explore the world from the comfort of a floating boutique hotel.

“We’ve all heard it: Cruising is back, cruising is back, cruising is back. That’s true, but river cruising is leading the way,” said Alex Pinelo, senior vice president of sales for AmaWaterways. “Last year was [the company’s] best year ever —and we’ve already surpassed last year.”

‘Commissions With A Comma’

A dozen river cruise vessels representing nine brands docked next to each other in front of Cruise Port Amsterdam for the expo: Amadeus River Cruises, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Riverside Luxury Cruises, Riviera River Cruises, Viking, Uniworld River Cruises, Tauck and Emerald Cruises.

Many travel advisors stayed onboard the ships during the conference, then toured and ate meals on the others to familiarize themselves with the different offerings; some also signed up for pre- or post-expo FAM trips . They also deepened their knowledge by attending education sessions hosted by the individual cruise lines, chatting with executives during a one-day trade show and listening to presentations during a four-hour general session.

Their overarching goal? To earn “commissions with a comma,” as Kristie Keller, owner of Addicted to Adventures , said during a panel discussion. She was back at the expo for a second year because of how much she’d been able to grow her river cruise sales after the 2023 event.

“Even though I’ve only been in the business of selling river cruises for a year, I have a group going in May of over 45 people,” she said, eliciting cheers from the audience.

Advisors like Keller not only shared inspirational success stories, but also offered up actionable tips and advice for fellow advisors. Their recommendations ranged from building relationships with business development managers (BDMs) to adding a sense of urgency and exclusivity in communications to their clients. They also discussed the value of social media and letting their own passion for river cruising shine through.

“If you build excitement—whether it’s on social media or email or at cruise nights—if you talk with enthusiasm and you put it out there, people will come to you,” said Vernae White, the owner of Voyages by Vernae.

Travel Advisors Are 'Instrumental'

The growing demand for river cruises is manifesting in several ways, as cruise line executives shared with attendees. Not only are more travelers booking river cruise voyages, but they’re also booking earlier, they’re committing to longer itineraries and they’re splurging on larger, nicer state rooms.

River cruises are likely still benefitting from pent-up demand coming out of the pandemic. But travel advisors themselves have also played a role in the sector’s growth, said  Jackie Friedman , president of Nexion Travel Group and ASTA board chair.

“A lot of it is awareness,” she said. “It’s still a relatively young industry, but for many consumers, it’s something new and different. I’ve been watching the travel advisors’ posts on social media at this event, and their clients are responding with lots of intrigue. ‘Oh, I never thought about a river cruise before.’ It’s a segment of the industry, for the most part, that travel advisors were absolutely instrumental in growing. And they’re instrumental in educating the consumers.”

In addition to the novelty, many travelers are drawn to river cruising because it’s an easy, stress-free and comfortable way to travel. Cruise brands are also offering well-timed promotions to help sweeten the deal, like flat-rate or free airfare amid soaring travel costs .

Cruise lines are also paying close attention to trends and adapting their offerings to appeal to new consumers. They’re offering more active excursions like hiking, biking and kayaking, and organizing sailings exclusively for solo travelers , for example. They’re also curating itineraries around specific interests, such as wine and fine dining.

Those efforts are paying off—and, just as importantly, they’re setting the industry up for sustainable, long-term growth.

“We have just scratched the surface with river cruising,” said Pam Hoffee, president of Avalon Waterways . “We will continue to grow at a good pace, at the right pace, to make sure we’re taking care of the environment and that we continue to be customer-driven.”
