It’s Time to Reimagine Journey into Imagination.

journey into imagination logo

Disney Parks has posted a series of videos featuring Figment arriving to California with a suitcase an idea bag & book and a dream his imagination. In these videos, the character visits the Walt Disney Studios corporate headquarters in Burbank and Walt Disney Imagineering campus in Glendale.

The first in a series of five videos features Figment letting his imagination run wild in Legends Plaza in front of the Team Disney headquarters (the Michael Eisner or “Seven Dwarfs” building–where Bob Iger and the other c-suite head honchos work). In the second video, Figment meets a superfan of his (keen eyes should recognize that bench). The third features Figment unloading a bunch of unimaginative junk from a bag at a security checkpoint.

In the fifth video, Figment demonstrates the five senses by visiting various areas of the studio. He checks out the multiplane camera on display in the lobby, smells food in the commissary, etc. Most notably, Figment touches former Imagineer Tony Baxter’s handprints on his Disney Legends plaque. For those who are unfamiliar with him, Baxter created Figment for the original Journey Into Imagination attraction at EPCOT and has been quite vocal in recent years about getting a crack at redoing the ride .

The final video is the culmination of everything that came before it, with the character carrying a notepad labeled Figment’s Book of Ideas . He walks through the halls of the headquarters and meets with employees, before finally walking through the doors of the storied Walt Disney Imagineering building in Glendale.

D23 followed up with their own videos that remix the same footage of Figment at the Walt Disney Studios and Imagineering headquarters, while also adding shots of Figment with the statues in Legends Plaza and touching Marty Sklar’s plaque.

We’ll start with the obvious, which is that Disney hasn’t announced anything in or alongside these videos. Absolutely nothing official has been said about Journey into Imagination getting a fourth version . They’re toying with us.

They know they’re toying with us, too. Despite cliches about social media accounts being “run by interns,” that’s not how any of it actually works with Disney. A series of posts like this would be workshopped, involve (multiple) meetings across departments, and go through layers of approval. None of this is done on a lark. It’s all purposeful and strategic.

Disney knows exactly what they’re doing by ending on a shot of Figment entering Walt Disney Imagineering, the reactions and emotions it’ll evoke from fans. That’s precisely the point. They want the speculation. The buzz. The hope. The blog posts like this one. ( Hey, it’s not falling into a trap if we jump into it willingly! )

journey into imagination logo

Whether the video actually means something or is teasing at an announcement to come is anyone’s guess. I’ve heard some fans speculate that this relates to the upcoming Seth Rogen Figment film . I’m highly skeptical of that being the case. For one thing, that movie was never  officially  announced and it’s been over a year since we’ve heard anything about it. In between, Disney has cut back significantly on streaming production, and then there were writers’ and actors’ strikes, the latter of which was literally just  resolved.

Even if the film is still in development (a huge “if”), this doesn’t seem like the time to share or tease an update on it. This also doesn’t seem like the way of doing so. These videos focus on Tony Baxter and Marty Sklar, two Imagineering legends well-known for being instrumental to EPCOT Center. It also ends with Figment ending the Imagineering building.

Admittedly, reading  anything  into the videos is probably unwise. But if you’re going to draw conclusions, the video is leading you towards ones about EPCOT, not a movie.

journey into imagination logo

Funny story: we can’t have candles anymore because Yossarian the Cat likes to “play” with the flame and kept burning himself. On a totally unrelated note, my sincere belief is that Disney Parks is purposefully teasing an upcoming announcement for a reimagining of Journey into Imagination at EPCOT. I’ll be the first admit that’s colored by me very much wanting to believe. (I’m like Mulder and UFOs, but with way worse luck!)

I’ve held out hope for a Journey into Imagination reimagining for years, and been burned by a number of rumors and announcements that never came to fruition. (I still can’t watch Frozen  without thinking about what could have been had that movie not been a smash hit.) Point being, what I think will or should happen should not be taken seriously by anyone.

journey into imagination logo

With that said, assuming for the sake of argument that a Journey into Imagination reimagining were going to happen, I think this is probably how it would look. Josh D’Amaro wouldn’t just mention it in passing as one of the quick hits during the Disney Parks Panel at the 2024 D23 Expo.

The company would build up to the announcement with a bunch of breadcrumbs and a series of teases over the course of months, telegraphing their intentions to make such a reveal to generate excitement and pack the Anaheim audience with diehard EPCOT fans. The reveal itself would be as splashy as possible, getting Tony Baxter and Figment (and Dreamfinder, if he’s to be involved) on stage to share the news as the grand finale of the Parks Panel.

With the 2024 D23 Expo happening August 9-11, this is about the time those teases might start. So now it’s a matter of seeing what else happens in the coming months.

journey into imagination logo

While I cannot say whether this is false hope or a sincere sign that Journey into Imagination is being reimagined, what I can say is that it should be. That it’s time to reimagine the Imagination pavilion ( Figment called–wants changes! ). That’s hardly a bold assertion–it’s been time for well over a decade. The last version was only a band aid, meant as a quick fix for the truly abysmal second version.

It’s no secret that even as diehard Figment faithful, we don’t love the current incarnation of the ride. It made our lists of the 10 Worst Attraction Replacements at Walt Disney World and  10 Attractions That Have Aged Poorly at Walt Disney World . We recently (half-heartedly) defended Journey into Imagination as one of several attractions at EPCOT that you should not skip , which is a “controversial” opinion because the attraction truly is divisive.

The current Journey into Imagination has low guest satisfaction scores relative to other rides of its kind. We’ve routinely remarked that first-timers confuse Figment for a Spyro the Dragon knock-off, which is really only a half-joke.

journey into imagination logo

Unless you’re a child of the 1980s or 90s who experienced the original attraction– which has been gone for far longer than it existed! –or are a voracious consumer of Disney history videos, you likely have zero affinity for Figment and might even be confused by why the current character has such a strong fan following. (He doesn’t! It’s the old Figment we love!)

Not only is guest satisfaction low, but the current Journey into Imagination attraction and the pavilion as a whole are underutilized. The ride routinely is a walk-on or has an actual wait time of under 5 minutes. The theater has been showing the Pixar shorts for a while now, which was also meant to be a band aid following the removal of Captain EO.

Earlier this year, Disney leadership expressed a desire to increase capacity of the parks by reimagining areas that are currently underused . There are several such spots in EPCOT, but aside from Wonders of Life, I can’t think of any that have as much potential for absorbing more crowds as the Imagination pavilion. There’s so much untapped potential.

journey into imagination logo

This approach to growing attendance without expanding makes a tremendous amount of sense. Although CEO Bob Iger and Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro have touted a plan to invest $17 billion in Walt Disney World and another plan to double investment to $60 billion in Disney Parks over the next decade , they’ve also conceded that the spending will start slower and ramp up in the back half of the decade.

As we’ve pointed out repeatedly, Disney has too much debt and not enough liquidity to front-load spending. This means that whatever the 10-year plan is for Disney’s Park & Resorts, it’s  necessarily backloaded. That’s why this blog has focused on figuring out streaming, ESPN, linear television, etc. It’s not that we really care about those divisions–we’re parks fans first and foremost–it’s that all of that is a prerequisite before investing in Walt Disney World.

journey into imagination logo

That alone puts the  start  of expansion plans in late 2024 or 2025. This doesn’t mean Disney won’t announce big plans earlier, but we likely won’t see significant construction on anything until then. Spending probably doesn’t start in earnest until October 2024 or maybe even 2025. That’s the point at which we’d expect work to begin  on the  Tropical Americas at Animal Kingdom , meaning you probably have (at least) another year to ride Dinosaur.

To that point, there’s also a reason why Walt Disney World will start with Tropical Americas rather than the ‘Beyond Big Thunder’ project in Magic Kingdom. Well for one thing, Animal Kingdom is in much more urgent need of help. But the other big reason is that Tropical Americas is mostly a reimagining rather than a fresh build, and can be accomplished much, much faster. (While we  hope  there’s a brand-new Encanto ride in this land, there’s no guarantee of that.)

journey into imagination logo

But this is a post about EPCOT and Journey into Imagination, not Animal Kingdom. Getting to the point, if you look at the current Disney Parks Project Timeline , you’ll notice absolutely no major attractions on the horizon after Tiana’s Bayou Adventure opens in 2024. If rumors are to be believed and that attraction is able to open early, that leaves at least a 2-year gap between that attraction and Tropical Americas.

In that time, Universal is opening Epic Universe in Summer 2025. Walt Disney World won’t have a direct ‘answer’ to that new park. Whether they should is another topic for another day. But it’s already too late for a new ride or land to debut at Walt Disney World alongside Epic Universe. That ship sailed at least a year ago.

About the only thing that could be accomplished in that timeframe is ride reimaginings. Personally, I’m skeptical even that’s sufficient time for any unannounced projects, but it’s at least plausible. A redone Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster could be done in 6-8 months and would be a colossal draw with mainstream audiences.

journey into imagination logo

Over at EPCOT, revisiting Wonders of Life with Inside Out 2 would be a perfect fit for that pavilion, and provide a needed family-friendly option for World Discovery. Meanwhile, a reimagined Journey into Imagination would be a huge hit with fans and revitalize that corner of EPCOT.

So the timeline makes sense, and reimaginings certainly fit with Disney’s plans to invest $60 billion–but less of that up front. (I know a lot of Walt Disney World fans won’t like hearing this, but I suspect we have a good 5+ years of redone rides before we see anything brand-new. Honestly, as much as I’d love both, there are so many rides in sorry states that are overdue for TLC that I’m kind of fine with this approach.)

journey into imagination logo

About the only thing that makes the prospect of a Journey into Imagination announcement at the 2024 D23 Expo less likely is other potential projects at EPCOT. We already know that Test Track 3.0 is coming , but that’s being funded by General Motors and largely has a different target audience than the family-friendly Figment ride. Both could happen simultaneously.

However, Spaceship Earth is also overdue for a refurbishment and that will be necessary due to the ride system sooner rather than later. That’ll probably be a year-long project, and it’s difficult to imagine both it and Journey into Imagination going down at the same time.

Then again, it’s tough to see Disney closing Spaceship Earth and putting up new construction walls right after the walls come down around the Giant EPCOT Dirt Pit. So it is conceivable that a reimagining of Journey into Imagination will leapfrog Spaceship Earth.

journey into imagination logo

The final reason why a reimagining of Journey into Imagination could and should happen is repairing relations with fans and positive PR. For Bob Iger, this should be a no-brainer move. Although it’s unlikely he himself is a Figment fan, Bob Iger has demonstrated upon returning that he does care about guest goodwill and fan disenchantment– but there’s more work to be done on that front . He’s also concerned about his legacy.

Likewise, Josh D’Amaro still appears to be in the running as a successor CEO. Regrettably, that’s not a position fans vote on, but there have been  a lot of mainstream media pieces about fan complaints about the parks. If D’Amaro becomes the heir-apparent, you better believe that CNBC, Wall Street Journal, etc., will all be running pieces about the guy who presided over a period of fan unrest being promoted.

journey into imagination logo

Bringing back Figment and Dreamfinder is a surefire way of undoing a lot of the outrage and brand damage from the last few years, quieting the complaints and criticism. I can’t think of any other single positive announcement that would outweigh so many prior negatives ones. A lot would be forgiven by fans in the blink of an eye.

An overhaul of Journey into Imagination would be both a legacy project and something that would define the otherwise underwhelming World Celebration neighborhood of the EPCOT transformation, tying it together into a more cohesive project. Figment would become the face and mascot of the new-look EPCOT, elevating the otherwise underwhelming central spine in the process. Not only that, but Figment has already “proven” that he can really move merchandise and is a highly successful meet & greet character .

Walt Disney World has done enough dipping its toes into the pool to test the popularity of Figment. It’s beyond time for a redone ride. There are several incredibly compelling reasons to move forward on this in 2024. It’s the second-best time to do something, with the most logical time being a decade ago.

YOUR THOUGHTS

Do you think 2024 will finally be the year that a reimagining of Journey into Imagination is announced? Think Disney is purposefully teasing that with these videos or are they just giving us false hope again? Do you agree or disagree with our assessment that now is the second-most logical time for a Journey into Imagination overhaul? Any questions? Why does everyone who writes a story on this only ever post 1, 2, 3, and 5? But never the 4th video.

' src=

I’m always cracking jokes about this but in all seriousness, the fact that Trey Parker and Matt Stone based a three-part South Park episode (first planned as a feature film) on Journey into Imagination is just one example of how this ride has wormed itself into the cultural zeitgeist. There’s just something so uniquely odd, endearing, and memorable about the original version and the resonating echoes that persisted through its reboots. This original version of this ride wasn’t “famous” or “classic” like attractions Disney has adapted for films (POTC, HM, JC) but it made stronger impressions on guests than almost any other. It’s time to bring back that magic! Let’s do a REAL Project Imagination Doorway but with imagineers vs. federal agents leading the way. They can even reuse the Stargate from Harmonious!

' src=

Trey Parker and Matt Stone have to be closet Disney fans. That, or they have longtime writers at South Park who are. There have just been too many references over the years–many of which are fairly deep cuts–for it to be coincidence.

Speaking of South Park, it’s worth watching the newest special. I know it’s been interpreted by the rage-bait crowd as supporting their “side,” but in typical South Park fashion, it actually skewers both.

I hate that I have Comedy Central and (HBO)Max, but I’m still going to have to pony up for a month of Paramount+ for this (free trials used up). But I will. It is amazing how the South Park guys are so bent on deliberately (and hilariously/accurately) offending our modern sensibilities yet meanwhile totally “cancel-proof.” Without them there would be a huge chasm in a world that so desperately begs to be satirized (not simply “made fun of”).

Not to get off on too much of a tangent, but do comedians really get “cancelled” unless they do something that exposes them or a company to legally liability OR they “allow” themselves to be cancelled? Dave Chappelle, Bill Maher, and plenty of others still seem to be doing pretty well. I dunno, I guess I think too much is made of our so-called cancel culture.

As for Paramount+, you can get it for “free” with Walmart+ (that’s how we have it).

Good points, Tom. One final thought – I agree that cancel culture is overrated generally and that comedians often play it up for publicity, but YouTube’s algorithm absolutely cordons off dark/edgy comedy from being amplified. There was a LOT of public pressure on Netflix to remove Chappelle’s specials. Famously edgy (for its time) The Simpsons has been goaded into changing/removing characters and tropes, and 30 Rock (voluntarily…?) scrubbed a whole storyline from existence based on episodes that viciously MOCKED the use of blackface. Jimmy Kimmel also (voluntarily?) left his show for months for a Karl Malone impersonation decades earlier. Those were all unique situations but South Park (and Book of Mormon, Team America, etc,) has gone WAY farther in its infringements on human decency than anyone above, yet remains totally unscathed. Which I believe is a wonderful thing and a testament to their ability to equally and witheringly mock smugness, self-righteousness, and tone-deafness across every spectrum of society. Plus (back on topic) their abundant imaginations want to make me smash clams of delight on my tummy.

Journey Into Imagination With Figment

  • View history

The attraction is the third incarnation of Journey Into Imagination , an attraction that operated from 1983 until 1998, introducing the original characters Dreamfinder and Figment , and featuring " One Little Spark ", an original song by the Sherman Brothers . That attraction was replaced by the short-lived Journey Into YOUR Imagination in 1999, which was controversial and critically panned for its condescending tone and the removal of its characters and music. The overwhelmingly negative response to Journey Into YOUR Imagination led its closure in 2001 and subsequent revamp into Journey Into Imagination With Figment, which opened on June 2, 2002.

On November 13, 2023, Disney released a video of Figment visiting Walt Disney Imagineering with a book of ideas, hinting at a fourth iteration of the ride.

Premise [ ]

  • Climb aboard your tour tram and get ready for surprises galore as you travel through Dr. Channing’s sensory labs. Little ones will love learning and laughing about the five senses — sound, sight, smell, touch and taste—on this madcap musical trip with Figment.
  • The Institute’s beleaguered chairman Dr. Nigel Channing (played by Eric Idle ) sets out to prove how the 5 senses capture the imagination, but is upstaged by the mischievous Figment, who sabotages the doctor’s sound experiment, interferes with the eye chart and causes quite a stink in the Smell Lab.
  • Then up becomes down as you cruise through Figment’s fluorescent, topsy-turvy house and discover that imagination really does work best when set free!
  • Afterward, be sure to head to ImageWorks--an interactive play area where you can use your imagination to make music, digital pictures and more.

Summary [ ]

Figment in the sound lab.

Dr. Nigel Channing of the Imagination Institute has opened the Institute's doors, inviting guests to a special drive-thru open house that will take them through the Institute's five Sensory Labs: Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch and Taste. Figment tags along to Channing’s dismay and causes mischief along the way.

In the Sound Lab, Figment interrupts the experiment and comes up with a telephone and the train sound from the previous version of the ride is now a “Train of Thought”.

In the Sight Lab, Figment knocks the letters off of the room’s eye chart and begins a sing along to "One Little Spark". The materializing butterfly from the previous version was carried over to this incarnation, but rather than appearing in the cage, the effect is now reversed so that the butterfly disappears.

In the Smell Lab, Figment takes over a giant slot machine-like contraption, becomes a skunk and sprays the guests with a foul odor (which is actually a burnt coffee smell).

Channing, after seeing the chaos that Figment has been causing, stops the tour outside the Taste and Touch Labs and decides that it should end right there. Figment then takes the guests to his own open house, which he literally turns upside down with his carefree mind.

Channing soon learns from Figment that imagination should be set free and we go into the finale with numerous Figments and Channing singing "One Little Spark" together. The guests then enter the unload area, disembark the ride vehicles and enter the ImageWorks.

Reception [ ]

The current ride has received mixed reviews, some saying Figment has become obnoxious and annoying, and they hope for a future rehab to restore Dreamfinder back to the attraction, while others are just glad that Figment is back.

Tony Baxter , the Imagineer who co-created the original 1983 attraction, has expressed criticism towards the current attraction. Baxter was interviewed in a 2018 episode of Podcast: The Ride , where he referred to Journey Into Imagination with Figment as a "sham of an attraction", opining that it "sort of reflects a more adult attitude, and if you can explain to me what an upside down toilet on the ceiling and learning how a skunk smells improve your imagination, it would help me a lot, 'cause, I for one, can't figure it out." [1] At a 2020 virtual event hosted by the Walt Disney Birthplace, Baxter was asked if he would come out of retirement to redo the attraction. He replied, "I would — because to me it’s a critical attraction. It gets at what we started about childhood and it was interesting when the original ride was there [...] I would give anything to be called upon to rethink that and get back to the story that every human being does." [2]

Allusions to Disney films [ ]

The attraction includes several visual elements suggesting that the Imagination Institute is connected to Medfield College, the setting of several live-action Disney films.

The queue line for the attraction passes the "offices" of Professor Brainard ( Fred MacMurray 's role in The Absent-Minded Professor , although the queue addresses the 1997 remake when the role was played by Robin Williams ) with dancing Flubbers visible behind the door's window, Wayne Szalinski ( Rick Moranis in the Honey, I Shrunk the Kids franchise) with a silhouette of the shrinking machine visible behind the door's window accompanied by an unnatural reddish-purple color and Dean Higgins ( Joe Flynn 's role in the "Dexter Riley" films).

A series of other Easter eggs can be seen and heard throughout the queue as well, including a secretary making occasional calls over the intercom for Brainard, Szalinski, Higgins, Dexter Riley , and Merlin Jones .

Dr. Channing is seen pictured next to the main characters from both films as they are the company's Inventors of the Year.

During the ride, after the vehicles exit the Sound Lab, the guests pass a glass-fronted computer room with a sign on the door that reads "No tennis shoes allowed," a reference to The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes , the first Dexter Riley film. A Medfield College letterman's jacket can be seen inside the room.

  • Before entering the Sound Lab, an office door has the name "Dean Finder" on it, a reference to the Dreamfinder , the former host of the attraction.
  • During the Holiday season, starting in 2020, the animatronics of Figment in the Sound Lab and Touch and Taste Lab are given a blue Christmas sweater featuring the pavilion and its logo.

Epcot Center Pavilion logos

The Symbolism Behind Epcot’s Symbols

By Michael Crawford

When designing Epcot Center, the talented minds at WED Enterprises–now known as Walt Disney Imagineering–made sure that every visual element made guests feel as if they were truly stepping into a community of tomorrow. Take, for example, the contemporary circular symbols designed for Epcot: Spaceship Earth , Universe of Energy, Horizons , World of Motion, Communicore, Journey Into Imagination , The Land, The Living Seas, and Epcot itself. Here how’s some of these beloved icons came to life.

Epcot Center logo concepts

Epcot needed an appropriately futuristic logo. During the 1970s, Disney designers came up with a variety of potential logos, some of which are seen here.

Epcot Center logo concept

This logo was proposed in 1978. Card Walker, then Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, nixed the design, saying that it reminded him of a stop sign.

Epcot Center logo concept

It was designer Norm Inouye who would eventually hit upon the idea: five rings–representing information, technology, environment, education, and entertainment–surrounding a central star.

When those individual concepts linked up, he says, the logo for Epcot Center was created. “All the other [pavilion logos] are single rings, and the Epcot logo was five rings and represented what I thought was the idea of Epcot Center.”

Disney Legends Marty Sklar and John Hench, who oversaw the Epcot design efforts, liked the idea. After some modifications, Norm’s design became the familiar “flower” logo which would become a welcome sight to Epcot visitors for years to come.

Epcot Center logo

Marty summarized the symbolism behind this iconic image:

“The Epcot Center logo symbolizes unity, fellowship, and harmony around the world. Five outer rings are linked to form the shape of a flower–a celebration of life. The heart of the logo is the Earth, embraced by a star symbolizing hope–the hope that with imagination, commitment, and dedication, we can create a better tomorrow.”

Epcot Center Pavilion logos

Among the familiar sights at Epcot were the symbols used to represent individual pavilions. Inouye designed these, as well (except for the Wonders of Life pavilion, which was added later). But arriving at these unforgettable icons didn’t come easy. “We did hundreds!” Norm says. “When we were presenting to Marty and John, I would cover the walls [with logos] and it was almost too much for them.”

“I did a whole series of different directions just to get a sense for where they were at,” he adds. “So when I learned they wanted a more contemporary design, we boiled things down. And consequently, that’s what we ended up with—something contemporary.”

Whatever the inspiration, Epcot’s graphical style remains just as sleek and futuristic today as it did back in 1982.

Instead, you’ll need to leave your stroller in the designated stroller parking area outside the queue entrance.

The first version of Journey into Imagination opened in Epcot in 1983 . Inspiration for this attraction came from an abandoned Disneyland attraction called Professor Marvel’s House of Illusions.

The backstory was that Professor Marvel was an eccentric scientist who bred dragons. This concept was tweaked, becoming Figment and the Dreamfinder in Journey into Imagination.

The original ride closed in 1998 and a reimagined attraction opened in 1999, eliminating the Dreamfinder and featuring a new character, Dr. Nigel Channing.

However, reaction to the revamped ride was mostly negative as Figment, who has become a beloved icon of Epcot, had a much smaller role. A little over a year later the ride closed for a second time for a major refurbishment.

Journey into Imagination with Figment finally opened in 2002, delighting Figment lovers with his return to the main stage. Now Figment acts as a sidekick to Channing, singing tunes and bouncing in and out of scenes.

Journey into Imagination with Figment is now the longest-running iteration of this attraction, having been open for more than 20 years.

Other Fun Details

  • The popular song for this attraction, “One Little Spark,” was written by the Sherman brothers. This Academy-Award-winning duo was responsible for other ride themes like “ it’s a small world ” and also worked on Mary Poppins.
  • After you exit the ride, you can even say hello to Figment inside ImageWorks!

8 Facts and Secrets About Journey Into Imagination with Figment at Disney’s Epcot

journey into imagination logo

Figment is arguably one of the most beloved attractions and characters across Walt Disney World and definitely at the top in all of Epcot. This attraction has had a few different renovations, and there are rumors that another one may be on the horizon. If you are Figment lovers like we are, you will love these eight facts and secrets about Journey Into Imagination with Figment:

8 – The storyline for the attraction was completely different when it opened (twice).

This attraction has actually held three different storylines during the life of that attraction. When it first opened, it featured Dreamfinder and Figment. The ride was then made up of ten scenes where Figment was learning to use his imagination throughout each scene. This version became an instant fan-favorite. When Honey I Shrunk the Audience came to the pavilion, they took the attraction a little different direction where Nigel Channing was hosting an “open house” at the Imagination Institute. The version we know today is a little different direction on the “open house” where Figment takes over the tour and teaches us that imagination should be set free.

7 – Dreamfinder and Figment were fan favorites and used to do meet and greets with guests.

Guests couldn’t get enough of Dreamfinder and Figment. Dreamfinder wore “steampunk” attire and would carry Figment with him to take photos and interact with guests in the park. This was an extremely popular meet and greet. We would absolutely love it if they would do a limited-time magic even and bring them back for a visit!

6 – Why Figment is purple.

One of the Imagineers that worked on the original attraction absolutely loved dragons, which became the inspiration for why Figment became a dragon. When you think of a dragon, you may think of green as the first color choice. Since Kodak was sponsoring the ride, they wouldn’t want green as the color for the main character since that is the primary color for Fuji Film. Purple was decided on as the color for Figment and wouldn’t have any brand interference.

5 – Figment was one of the first characters created exclusively for a theme park.

At the time Figment was created, he was one of the first characters ever to be created exclusively for a theme park attraction. The even more amazing thing about this is that he quickly became a beloved and notorious character that had his own line of souvenirs and Disney products, and also became the lead spokes-character for the entire Epcot park! It was amazing just how popular he became and still is with many Disney fans.

4 – “One Little Spark” was written by the Sherman brothers.

The very popular song for this attraction was written by the very famous Sherman brothers! They have written many Disney classics and were favorites of Walt Disney himself, who they worked very closely with Walt when he was still alive. The tune is incredibly catchy and will have you humming it as you walk around the park during the rest of the day.

3 – Figment and “One Little Spark” were removed from the attraction at one time.

Figment and “One Little Spark” were two of the most amazing things about the very original version of the attraction. Both were instant fan favorites, which made it even more shocking that Disney removed them both in the second version of the attraction. They were gone for about 3 years, and then Disney finally listened to the fans and brought both back in the 3rd and current version of the attraction.

2 – There are “secret” bathrooms to the right of the entry to the attraction.

One of the best bathrooms in all of Epcot is right next to the attraction. As you approach the entry to the attraction, go to the right and keep walking around to the back. The bathrooms are great because many people don’t even know that they are there, so you almost never have a lot of people there. The music in the bathrooms is also really fun. If you need a pit stop, this is definitely the one to wait for!

1 – There are some really cool hidden Mickey’s!

Any fellow hidden Mickey hunters out there? In the “sight” room, look at the dry erase board. You will see a Mickey head on the dry erase board. Also, pay attention to the headphones on the table in the same room, and you will notice that there are Mickey ears on the headphones. When you are in one of the final scenes after the big “blast,” look at the “A” in “Action.” You will notice a Mickey head in the snow capping the “A.”

Why Figment’s Ride Should (and Shouldn’t) Be Changed

in Walt Disney World

Questioning Figment

EPCOT is where innovation and imagination coexist in glorious harmony at Walt Disney World, and it’s home to some of the most incredible attractions and exhibits. However, some of it’s attractions are beginning to show their age, especially compared to some of the newer rides like Cosmic Rewind. So why would they be interested in possibly revisiting an old fan favorite?

journey-into-imagination-figment

Spaceship Earth, Test Track, and Mission Space are just a few of the iconic features that call EPCOT home, but the poster child for the Park comes from a rather eccentric attraction that has been beloved by fans for decades. The original Journey Into Imagination introduced the world to EPCOT’s beloved purple dragon with a massive personality way back in 1983. Since his update in 2002, Figment has been delighting Guests and mucking up Dr. Channing’s open house for over twenty years. As stellar as that sounds, there are some fans calling for an update.

Reports of the attraction showing its age are starting to circulate, and there has been some speculation about returning to a revamped version of the original ’80s attraction featuring the Dreamfinder character making a return and rejoining his trusty sidekick. The original layout was undoubtedly a cult favorite and many modern Disney fans have fond memories of it, but the argument can also be made that there are just as many Guests who have a fondness for the current theming. If they go down this route, Disney might be faced with a peculiar struggle, and they might not be able to please both camps.

Dreamfinder balloon EPCOT

On one hand, the Dreamfinder hasn’t been seen in the attraction for decades, but he has made a few appearances at special events such as the D23 Expo. Obviously, there is a great amount of love and respect for the original attraction, and a wide audience would love to see a revamped version. At the same time, however, the current layout of the Imagination Institute has been around for over twenty years, and there are still a large amount of fans that will want to cling to the current version. The challenge for Disney is how to please both parties without short changing either one.

Related: Why Figment’s Ride Needs to Be Repaired, Not Closed

While there’s no confirmation that the ride will be changed (yet), Figment is starting to get a little wear and tear on him. With so many Disney attractions getting modernizations and rethemes, such as the recent Splash Mountain announcement , it feels somewhat bizarre that an attraction in Future World would be taking a step back in time. All fans can do is wait to see if the attraction receives any updates on the update.
