Your flight will arrive at Jorge Chavez International Airport, where your private transfer will meet you at customs. Your luxurious accommodation in Miraflores will offer a stunning glimpse of the chic atmosphere and captivating scenery. After checking in, you can take a walk along a portion of the six-mile boardwalk to enjoy the cliffside vistas, world-class food, and quality boutique shops.

What's Included:

Lima - Discover the History of Lima

In the morning, you can relax with the aromas of freshly baked bread and coffee beans from the surrounding Andes in the hotel dining room. Your guide will meet you at the hotel in the afternoon for an immersive tour into the City of Kings. At the Convento de San Francisco, you will find a shining yellow facade that hides the catacombs of the city’s first cemetery. Your guide will take you into the cool ambiance of the maze of narrow halls below the monastery, where approximately 10,000 people were buried.

Lima - Explore Pachacamac Ruins and the Larco Museum

Your guide will take you to the Pachacamac ruins after breakfast to discover the culture and architectural wonders that date back to the 8th century. The temple was dedicated to the sun god and features adobe walls that are shaped like a pyramid. The multicolored walls retain hints of grand frescoes, including an image of a fish. The pyramid was an important pilgrimage destination in pre-Columbian Peru. At the Larco Museum, you will view one of the largest collections of ancient Peruvian treasures. The impressive gallery displays over 45,000 artifacts that span more than 5,000 years of history.

Sacred Valley - Traverse Pisac Market and Ruins

Your private transfer will escort you to the airport in the morning for your flight to Cusco. Your guide will meet you upon arrival and lead you into the historical and spiritual ambiance of Pisac. The town will shine with exuberant colors from the famous market where members of the surrounding communities showcase their woven creations. The aromas of roasted chicken will fade beneath the scent of llama wool and bright dyes. Your guide will lead you to the citadel where Inca ruins fill the triangular plateau. Here, the agricultural terraces sweep across the steep foothills and create graceful curves.

Sacred Valley - Visit Towns and Ruins of the Sacred Valley

After breakfast, your guide will escort you on a private tour of the fascinating towns in the Sacred Valley, beginning with Moray. The scent of grass and crisp air will sweep across the famous terraces for which the town is known. The landscaped features date back to the Inca and are known for possessing a temperature difference of up to 27 degrees Fahrenheit between the top and bottom tier. After visiting the salt pans of Maras, you will reach the dramatic ruins of Ollantaytambo. The fortress looms above the surrounding valley at 9,160 feet above sea level.

Machu Picchu - Travel to Machu Picchu for a Private Tour

This morning, you will board the train to Machu Picchu at Ollantaytambo station. The Vistadome’s glass ceiling will offer you a view of the landscape as you pass beneath snow-capped peaks and lush cloud forests. Your guide will lead you on a private tour of the renowned Lost City of the Incas at Machu Picchu upon your arrival. The city is located at 7,972 feet above sea level. The Temple of the Sun was used for tribute and offerings, and it crowns the plateau with granite stone and a large door with two windows.

Cusco - Explore Machu Picchu Trails before Reaching Cusco

You will return to Machu Picchu in the morning to explore the greater archeological site at your leisure. Here, you will discover the beauty along the Machu Picchu Mountain Trek. The route offers wide walkways that are nestled between the surrounding mountains. The view will give way to the base of the mountain with steep steps that narrow along the descent, which connect the ridge to the summit for breathtaking views of Machu Picchu, Huayna Picchu, and the surrounding Putucusi Mountains. You will take the train to Cusco, where your private transfer will escort you to the comforts of your luxurious hotel.

Cusco - Delight in Colonial Cusco

The scent of rich chocolate and delicious local coffee will fill the dining room of your hotel at breakfast. After spending the morning at your leisure, your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby for a walking tour of Cusco’s colonial history. The cobblestone streets and winding staircase that connect the city center will lead you to the Plaza de Armas and San Pedro Market. At the Palace of the Archbishop, your guide will point out the 12-angled stone. The archeological artifact is a national heritage object due to its unique composition that reflects the Inca’s advanced knowledge of stonework and construction.

Santiago - Transfer to Vibrant Santiago, Chile

Santiago is a vibrant capital city pressed against the foothills of the Andes Mountains. The ambiance of art and culture sweeps through the streets beneath the skyscraper and looming snow-capped peaks with the central plazas that date back to the mid-16th century. Your private transfer will greet you at Arturo Merino Benitez Airport and escort you to the comfort of your accommodation. Your tour will lead you through the city for insight into the history and culture of Chile, which is embodied in the mural that decorates the Universidad de Chile metro station, spanning more than 6,458 square feet.

Santiago - Delight in seaside Valparaiso and a Wine Tour

Your guide will escort you to the coastal city of Valparaiso in the morning. The sea breeze will carry a briny aroma to the foothills. As you explore the city, you can visit the home of poet Pablo Neruda, who drew inspiration from the water. You can enjoy the views of the active harbor and preserved 1950s furniture that decorates the rooms. In the charming landscape of a celebrated vineyard, you can bask in the panoramic views of the vines and mountains as you sample a selection of wines to find notes of cherry with hints of cedar in the Syrah.

Hanga Roa - Travel to Easter Island

The complex aromas of coffee will filter through Santiago in the morning from the coffee shops that serve specialty blends. After breakfast, your private transfer will take you to the airport for your flight to Easter Island. After landing at Mataveri International Airport, you will reach the luxuries of your hotel and have the remainder of the day at your leisure. The island possesses a mystical allure as one of the most isolated destinations in the world nearly 2,300 miles away from Santiago. You can stroll through Hanga Roa as the scent of the sea drifts through the streets.

Hanga Roa - Discover the Treasures of Easter Island

You will embark on a private tour in the morning to reach the caldera of Rano Kau volcano. The ancient crater is over 2.5 million years old and possesses a diameter that reaches nearly one mile long. The crater lake will glisten with a pristine blue before you visit the ceremonial village of Orongo. Tortora reeds will fill the nearby bog as you wander along the dramatic landscape that is decorated with houses of overlapping stone slabs. Soil and grass cover the arched roofs, and at Ahu Akivi, you will find seven moai facing the sea and looking toward the setting sun.

Hanga Roa - Revel in Easter Island Culture

Your culture and history tour of Easter Island will continue at the white sands of Anakena. The site acted as the landing spot for the first king and, today, hosts two important archeological destinations. Ahu Ature Huke is considered the first moai to be reestablished on a pedestal. At Ahu Nau Nau, you will find the moai decorated with characteristic topknots. You will continue to Akahanga, where the breeze sweeps across the windswept grass. The 15 moai on a platform represents the largest monolithic monument in Eastern Polynesia. The surrounding cliffs and lapping waves will create a majestic ambiance.

Hanga Roa - Free Day on Easter Island

With a day at your leisure on Easter Island, you can discover the treasures beyond the mysterious archeological features. For a unique exploration of the island, you can enjoy a snorkeling tour to uncover the abundant wildlife in the surrounding coral beds. At Anakena Beach, you can relax beneath the fragrant coconut palms and dig your toes into the soft white sands. You will find calm water as you discover the splendid visibility that reaches up to 196 feet. The rocky seafloor will give way to images of bright coral and passing butterflyfish.

Hanga Roa - Depart for Home

In the morning, the aroma of sugarcane and plantains will fill the dining room of your hotel. You will find delicious local staples that are symbolic of the island culture and Polynesian heritage. The sunlight will spread over the island and highlight the diverse beauty of the secluded destination, once again revealing the mystical statues and the captivating active lifestyle. Best time to visit peru.

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.

Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs

Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.

This is a stark contrast to the  European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese  and Chinese immigrants.

Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.

What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or  futbol , as it’s called here.

Eating and drinking

Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.

Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.

The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Taste your way through Peru on our  10 day Peru Real Food Adventure.

Foods to try in Peru

Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chili peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.

Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.

3. Lomo saltado

This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.

4. Pisco sour

Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.

5. Coca tea

Rumored to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment

Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the center of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organized civilizations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.

Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilizations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilizations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.

However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.

Recent history

Military coups and regional disputes have dominated Peru's more recent history. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices leveling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.

New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.

Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

Must-visit places in Peru

Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:

1. Machu Picchu

No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.

Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day  Inca Trail Express from Lima  tour.

History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.

3. Sacred Valley

This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every color, produce and animal imaginable.

Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day  Sacred Land of the Incas trip.

4. Amazon Jungle

Spend mornings watching colorful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.

Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day  Amazon Jungle Short Break.

Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.

Savor the flavors of Lima on our 20 day  Peru Encompassed tour.

6. Arequipa

The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.

7. Colca Canyon

While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 meters, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.

Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day  Peru Essentials tour.

8. Lake Titicaca

Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.

See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a  Lake Titica Homestay.

9. Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometers. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.

10. Aguas Calientes

Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or traveled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.

Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our  9 Premium Peru trip.

You'll find vendors selling colorful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.

Things to buy in Peru

1. Alpaca wool clothing

As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.

The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has traveled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.

3. Jewelery

Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.

Festivals and events in Peru

Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organized), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:

1. Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)

The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic, two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.

2. Mistura Culinary Festival

Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.

3. Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

4. Carnaval

Each year before Lent cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

While varying climates can mean the best time to visit  Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this  South American  country.

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 6561 feet (2000 m) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of traveling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Is Peru a LGBTQI-friendly destination?

While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is in fact the flag of the Inca Empire and not a gay pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQI-rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQI community don’t publicly identify themselves and generally Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQI-travelers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when traveling in country areas.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Welcome to the Capital of Chile

The first day of your trip will start in the vibey city of Santiago and from here you will start your tour through Chile.

Upon landing in Santiago, Chile, our local representative will be waiting for you to take you to your hotel. ‘Santiago is Chile’ say the Santiaguinos, and a visit to this great city will show you why.

Located in central Chile, backed by the Andes to the east, the city was founded in 1541 in the fertile valley in which it sits. After settling into your hotel, you´ll have the remainder of the day to explore at your own leisure.

Santiago is Chile’s cultural, commercial, industrial, and political center. A cosmopolitan city, with ample restaurants, bars, hotels, and shopping, from tiny boutique and craft fairs to giant shopping malls. There are cultural attractions such as art galleries, museums, theaters, opera and ballet, lively nightlife, plus parks, tree-lined streets, and distinct neighborhoods.

You’ll see brand new high rises and supermarkets next to old, shabby buildings. You’ll have to fend off vendors and peddlers on the busses but ride in peace and comfort on the ultra-modern subway system.

Included: Private transfer from Santiago airport to your hotel with assistance; Accommodation in Santiago. (Meals – None).

Santiago like a local

By day two, you’ll no doubt be infected by the buzzing atmosphere of Santiago. This day is all about experiencing the city like a local.

Explore the exciting city of Santiago like a local with our fun and immersive city tour.

Accompanied by your private guide, you’ll discover hidden hotspots as well as the tourist highlights of Santiago. The trip begins with a subway ride to the Metro Station University of Chile. From here, you’ll wander along the main pedestrian city promenade, visiting iconic buildings such as the Palacio de Gobierno La Moneda and the Santiago Stock Exchange.

Next, you’ll set off towards Plaza de Armas, home to the gorgeous Cathedral, the Natural History Museum, and the Central Post Office. You’ll stop at Vega Central for a traditional Chilean snack before heading into the colorful bohemian district of Bellavista, where you’ll try a classic Santiaguino drink.

From here, you’ll hop in the cable car to the top of San Cristóbal, offering panoramic views over the entire city. Afterward, your guide will give you some local options for lunch (not included) before leaving you to spend the rest of the day in Santiago exploring at your own pace.

Included: Private Walking tour in Santiago with One-way metro ticket, Guide, Accommodation in Santiago. (Meals – Breakfast)

Arrival to the Chilean Desert

It’s time to hit the road again as you make your way to Atacama. Your private transfer will take you to the airport to hop on your flight towards Calama.

Upon landing in Calama airport, your private transfer will take you to San Pedro de Atacama . If arriving from a lower altitude, we would recommend spending your first day in San Pedro de Atacama relaxing and getting used to the altitude before doing anything overly physical.

San Pedro de Atacama is a town set on an arid high plateau in the Andes mountains of northeastern Chile. Its dramatic surrounding landscape incorporates desert, salt flats, volcanoes, geysers, and hot springs. The Valle de la Luna in the nearby Los Flamencos National Reserve is a lunarlike depression with unusual rock formations, a huge sand dune, and pink-streaked mountains.

Included: Transfer from hotel to Santiago airport in private service; Transfer from Calama airport to hotel in Atacama in group service; Accommodation in Atacama. (Meals – Breakfast).

Altiplanic Lagoon & Atacama Salt Lake

You’ll be used to the altitude by now and have an exciting day ahead exploring San Pedro de Atacama.

Travel between flamingo-filled lagoons, horizon bound salt flats, and highland lakes on this full-day group tour from San Pedro de Atacama, whisking you through Chile’s most stunning natural landscapes.

Setting off early, you’ll head for the Salar de Atacama, a gorgeous expanse of grey-white salt dotted with wetlands. This unique and fragile habitat is home to all kinds of birdlife, including large flocks of bright pink flamingos. Here, you’ll follow a nature trail, stopping at the viewpoints to observe the flamingoes and snapping some once-in-a-lifetime shots.

Next, you’ll ascend to the Andean highlands, reaching 4,200 meters above sea-level. Hopping off the bus, you’ll walk along the shores of two deep-blue lakes mirroring volcanoes and surreal, pastel-colored wetlands. Back down in the Atacama Valley, you’ll hike through a hidden gorge named the Quebrada de Jere, an oasis of fruit trees, flowers, and herbs near the traditional Andean village of Toconao. It’s a day of eye-opening contrasts, giving you a spectacular glimpse of the Atacama.

Included: Altiplanic Lagoons & Salt Lake Group excursion with guide and transport, Entrance fees; Accommodation in the Atacama. (Meals – Breakfast).

Tatio Geysers

On day five you’ll have a magical day discovering the gurgling geysers and mystical mud pools.

Early in the morning, explore the highest geyser field on the planet during this brilliant half-day group tour. Hidden up in the Andes at 4,300 meters above sea-level and surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, El Tatio is like nowhere else on earth. The geysers are most striking around daybreak when temperatures hover around the sub-zero mark, so you’ll leave San Pedro de Atacama before dawn to get the best views of the hydro-activity.

As you wander between gurgling steam vents and bubbling mud pools circled by multicolored mineral deposits and bright algae, the early start will soon pay off. Known by the locals as’ The Weeping Grandfather’, El Tatio is a mythical site that feels almost like part of a fantasy world. Once you’ve finished exploring the geysers and snapping the action, you’ll be treated to a buffet breakfast, where you can warm up with a cup of coffee.

Afterward, you can enjoy a relaxing soak in the natural hot springs before hopping back on the bus. On the way back to San Pedro, you can take a light trek along the mountain brook of Puripica, passing through a cactus-lined canyon.

The afternoon is free for you to spend at leisure.

Included: Half day Tatio Geyser group tour with guide and transport, Entrance fee; Accommodation in Atacama. (Meals – Breakfast)

Exploring the Lagoons

This day is full of colors, be sure to pack your camera to get some fantastic shots of this stunning area. As you say goodbye to Chile, this next section of the tour will show you why Bolivia is more than just a pit stop on the way to Peru.

Altiplano to the Andes and Cusco

Check out how you’ll be spending day eleven of your Chile, Peru, and Bolivia tour. This is an action-packed day full of fun and cultural activities.

Today at the arranged time, you will be taken to the bus station to begin your journey to Cusco. If you like to upgrade your experience, there is also a Luxury Train from Puno to Cusco that departs on specific days of the week (optional).

Leaving Puno and Lake Titicaca behind, you’ll start your journey by a comfortable tourist bus to Cusco. The drive is approximately 10.5 hours long and you’ll stop off along the route at some of the most beautiful and authentic locations. Stopping at the once-great pre-Hispanic city of Pukara, characterized by its huge pyramids, you will visit the lithic Museum where several artifacts of this period can be admired. The village is also known for its traditional ceramics known as “Toritos de Pucara”. Following your tour of Pukara, which will last around 35 minutes, you’ll board the tourist bus and head towards your next stop at La Raya. At 14,222 ft (4,335 m) above sea level, this marks the highest point of the route and is here where the Vilcanota River otherwise known as, the Sacred River of the Incas, is born and flows down through the mountains before joining the Amazon River.

The tour lasts around 10 minutes before continuing your journey to the fascinating archaeological complex of Raqchi. Stare in amazement at the monumental size of Raqchi and its temple, which has walls reaching up to 49 ft (15 m) and is unique in the Inca Empire.

The tour of Raqchi lasts for around 40 minutes and then you will continue to the last stop before arriving at Cusco, Andahuaylillas. This charming 16th Century village has a beautiful Main Square with the Church of San Pedro de Andahuaylillas; the pride of the town and its people. It is one of the most beautiful Baroque churches built under Spanish influence in the Americas and is often referred to as the “Sistine Chapel of the Americas”. Your tour of Andahuaylillas will last for about 25 minutes before the tour bus takes you to the final destination of the Capital of the Inca Empire, Cusco.

Upon arrival at Cusco, you’ll be met and transferred to your hotel located in the historical center and within walking distance of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Plaza de Armas, the main square of Cusco. Cusco is a place that has it all, busy local markets, grand colonial architecture, rich archeological history, relaxed café’s, beautiful surrounding scenery, and much more. The evening is free for you to spend at your leisure and with many excellent Cusco restaurants to choose from.

Included: Private transfer to the bus station with assistance; Touristic bus from Puno to Cusco with entrance fees and lunch; Private transfer with assistance from Cusco´s bus station to your hotel; Accommodation in Cusco. (Meals – Breakfast, Lunch).

Cusco like a local

Today is the day to dive deep into this amazing city in the Peruvian Andes. You’ll get a chance to experience a ton of Cusco highlights.

Walk around the Imperial City of the Incas, starting at the local market of Cusco, where you will experience a bit of Peruvian Culture and daily Cusqueño life. In the market, you can find the best variety of vegetables, bread, and fruit in the country. Continuing this pleasant walk you’ll visit the impressive Colonial Cathedral in Cusco containing over 400 paintings from the Cusqueña School and several beautiful altars.

Afterward, you’ll visit Koricancha, which is considered a religious center of Cusco, geographical and political. The Temple of Koricancha, was where the Inca paid homage to the Sun god called Inti. Qori means goldwork and Kancha means an enclosed space, bounded by walls. Then you’ll walk uphill a bit to enter the artisan quarter of San Blas, where you’ll be able to appreciate a religious painting and many workshops where, if they are available, you can watch artisans in action. After this, you’ll return to your hotel.

Included: Walking city tour with San Blas neighborhood and San Pedro market with a private guide and entrance fees; Accommodation in Cusco. (Meals – Breakfast).

Sacred Valley of the Inca

Bring your bargaining skills for today’s activities. You will have the chance to browse and purchase the world-renowned Peruvian tapestries.

After being picked up from your hotel your tour will start with a brief pit stop at the Mirador de Qorao or Awanacancha before heading up to Pisac. A famed hill town, Pisac is a great place to purchase top quality Andean knitwear at lower prices than you will find in major cities during your trip to Peru. Woven blankets, tapestries, and alpaca garments such as sweaters and mittens, colorful fabric, and accessories are found in abundance at the Pisac market in addition to pottery, jewelry, and other handicrafts. Then, you will visit the archaeological site of Pisac.

You will go to the ‘Tanqanamarca Cemetery’, where there existed an estimated 10000 burials and to the ‘Qantas Raqay neighborhood’ area, for farmers. It is composed of rustic stone buildings built on the edges of the cliffs. Afterward, you will go for a buffet lunch in the Sacred Valley, set in extensive gardens with beautiful views across the Valley. Then, you continue to an attractive little town located at the western end of the Sacred Valley, Ollantaytambo. The town has been built on top of original Inca foundations and is the best surviving example of Inca town planning.

The temple area is at the top of steep terracing which helped to provide excellent defenses. The stone used for these buildings was brought from a quarry high up on the opposite side of the Urubamba River – an incredible feat involving the efforts of thousands of workers.

Included: Sacred Valley tour in group service with transport, entrance fees, and lunch; Accommodation in Sacred Valley. (Meals – Breakfast, Lunch).

A Magical Machu Picchu Excursion

Day fourteen is the ultimate bucket list day and an opportunity that most people only dream about. Head to enchanting Machu Picchu, one of the most impressive places in the world.

Today at the arranged time, you will be taken to the Ollantaytambo train station to board your train to Aguas Calientes!

The citadel of Machu Picchu is by far the most important tourist attraction in the Sacred Valley. Discovered in 1911 by the American explorer Hiram Bingham, this stronghold, overlooking the deep canyon of the Urubamba River, is considered to be one of the most extraordinary examples of landscape architecture in the world.

In ancient times, when the Inca was considered to be a descendant of a god, this fortress was considered his palace above the clouds, where only the chosen ones could live. Every trip to Peru should include this destination and World Wonder. In Aguas Calientes, you’ll board a bus for a 20-minute ride to the sanctuary of Machu Picchu, where you’ll have a guided tour to explore this magnificent sample of Inca architectural perfection. You can also hike up to Machu Picchu Mountain to admire more stunning views of the ancient Inca citadel from above. The hike will take you around two hours one way and about one hour to get back. After an extensive visit to this magical place, you will have some free time to take some pictures before taking the bus back down to Aguas Calientes.

Taking the train from Aguas Calientes you’ll head through the dramatic landscape of the Sacred Valley until you reach Cusco. Having acclimatized to the altitude the last few days, Cusco’s altitude (11,150ft. above sea level) should be no problem at all at this point, allowing you to get out and enjoy the town this evening, or get some rest at one of our lovely boutique hotels in Cusco.

Included: Private transfer to the train station; Train ticket to Aguas Calientes and back to Cusco; Private guided excursion to Machu Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain, entrance fees and Roundtrip bus to Machu Picchu; Private transfer from the train station in Cusco to your hotel; Accommodation in Cusco. (Meals – Breakfast).

Day at Leisure

Spend your final full day however you wish. You’re sure to be day-dreaming about the incredible time you had in Bolivia, Chile, and Peru.

Today is free for you to spend it at leisure but here is a good opportunity to learn more about the Peruvian Cacao that is one of the finest in the world. To do so we recommend taking a Chocolate Workshop in the ChocoMuseum where on a 2-hour workshop you will learn how to make your chocolate. This is a hands-on activity, starting from the cocoa tree to the finished product passing by every step of the whole chocolate-making process. You will also discover the history of cocoa and the reasons why Peru is known for its fine chocolates.

Included: Accommodation in Cusco. (Meals – Breakfast)

Leaving Cusco

Pack your bags, do some final souvenir shopping, and get ready to say goodbye to beautiful South America.

We have no doubt that you’ll be saying goodbye with a heavy heart after experiencing one of the best Chile, Peru, and Bolivia tours.

Enjoy your last morning in Cusco at your leisure. Later in the afternoon, you will be taken to the airport to begin your journey back home.

Included: Private transfer from the hotel to Cusco airport with assistance. (Meals – Breakfast).
