Run a 5K Every Day: Can You Make It Happen on a Cruise Ship?

cruise ship 5k

Jason Stucki

Mapleton, Utah

cruise ship 5k

Jason Stucki is on a mission to run a 5K every day. . 🛳️But when he booked a trip on a Caribbean cruise, there were questions...

  • Was it even possible?
  • Did the cruise ship have a track or treadmill?
  • Could he make it happen with all the other vacation activities planned?

🏃‍♂️Check out Jason's Cruise-Ship Challenge to run at least 26.2-miles during a week-long cruise...

cruise ship 5k

🛳️Can you run a 5K every day on a cruise ship?

I am all about having fun, I like food as much as any guy, and I love to run…everyday if possible. . 🙋‍♂️My name is Jason, and I am known on social media as @runa5keveryday . . 🛳️ Have you ever vacationed on a cruise ship? . I recently went on my first cruise with my wife Jill, my sister Jenn, and her husband, Tyler. . As our trip approached, questions about running came to mind:

  • Could I run a 5K every day on a cruise ship?
  • Would distractions on board and at port get in the way?
  • Even if I could run a 5K every day, would it be enjoyable?

🛳️ Cruise-ship recon...

  • Upon researching, I learned there was a track on the 5th deck of the ship.
  • It’s length is .416 miles, which means 2.4 laps equal a mile.
  • 👉Think about this. The track on the ship is about twice the size of a traditional high-school track!

🛳️ More cruise-ship details

  • Size. Wonder of the Seas measures 1,188 feet (362 m) in length and has a gross tonnage of 236,857 across 18 decks.
  • Capacity. This ship accommodates 5,734 passengers at double occupancy or up to a maximum of 6,988 passengers, as well as a 2,300 crew.
  • Amenities. There are 16 decks for guest use, 20 restaurants, four pools and 2,867 cabins. The ship has a zipline, 3 waterslides, a surfing simulator, mini golf course, sports courts, and live theaters with entertainment at all hours of the day.

I began to get excited with the idea that it would be fun to not only try and run a 5K every day, but to boost my goal, and to actually run the distance of a full marathon (26.2 miles) while at sea.

  • ✅ Goal: Run a marathon on a cruise ship
  • ✅ Cruising Company: Royal Caribbean
  • ✅ Ship: Wonder of the Seas
  • ✅ Location: Western Caribbean (Coco Cay, Cozumel, Roatan, Costa Maya)
  • ✅ Dates: January 14-21, 2024

🏃‍♂️The cruise-ship track to complete the challenge

We boarded the ship on Sunday afternoon. As I stepped off the gangway onto deck 5, the first thing I saw was the track.  . I looked down each direction amazed at the length of the ship.

  • After checking into our rooms, we explored the ship.
  • The first bite of food I ate on the ship was a soft-serve ice cream cone.
  • We made our way to the Windjammer Buffet and had lunch.
  • We then found a comfy spot in the Solarium to sit and wait for the ship to set sail.

Cruise-ship rules for runners & walkers

I found some time to explore the track. . I was enthused by the multiple signs used to inform guests of the rules. . There were even tips for runners, and encouraging messages.

cruise ship 5k

🏃‍♂️Let the Cruise-Ship Marathon Challenge begin:

The daily rundown....

🛳️ Sunday, January 14

  • Boarded the ship. Explored the track, but did not run.

🏃‍♂️ Monday, January 15 (4.6/26.2 miles)

  • 6 a.m. I woke up and ran 4.6 miles (11 laps)
  • Ran up the stairs to 15th deck and jumped in the pool

🏃‍♂️ Tuesday, January 16 (11.65/26.2 miles)

  • There were more people today than yesterday using the track. Several times we lapped an older gentleman walking in the running lane, as well as a woman who seemed to think her speedwalking counted as running. (Elbows out, and swinging hips does not count as running).
  • We ran 8 laps at 6 PM.
  • Jill sat on an observatory deck so she could count our laps.
  • Strava recorded it as a 3.21 mile run.

🛳️ Wednesday, January 17 (11.65/26.2 miles)

  • Didn’t run today.

🏃‍♂️ Thursday, January 18 (15/26.2 miles)

  • Ran 8 laps
  • It was noticeably hot and humid.
  • Spent the day on the Island of Roatan, just off the mainland of Honduras. I happily paid a beach vendor for a massage, drank fruity pina coladas and feasted on Honduran food.

🏃‍♂️ Friday, January 19 (21.66/26.2 miles)

  • Ran 8 laps as the ship arrived at Costa Maya.
  • We ran 8 laps before dinner.

🏃‍♂️ Saturday, January 20 (28 + miles total)

  • Ran 8 laps before breakfast
  • Before eating lunch, we decided to finish our marathon. Knowing there was the possibility of having missed a lap or two, we ran a couple extra laps, finishing our marathon at a potential of just under 28 miles.

🙋‍♂️The FAQ guide to the Cruise-Ship Marathon Challenge

When Jason shared his plans to try and run a 5K every day on a cruise ship during a week-long Caribbean vacation, he soon discovered inquiring minds wanted to know a few things. . Check out the FAQ about the Cruise-Ship Challenge...

⌚Q1: What are the best times for running?

On days at port...

Early mornings were a great time to run because most people just wanted to get off the ship.

  • We scheduled our dinner time in the dining room for 7:45 every night since that would match our MST time zone dinner time.
  • Running at 6 p.m. each evening before our dinner was also a great time to use the track.
  • This is probably because half the guests were in the dining hall for early dinner, and the other half were preparing for late dinner.

On days at sea...

There didn’t seem to ever be a golden hour for running.

  • Children were restless on these days, and often exploring the track.
  • There was always a noticeable increase of users on the track when at sea.

😎Q2: How was the weather while running?

  • Day 1 in Orlando was cold and windy.
  • Day 2 was still a bit chilly, but made running pleasurable.
  • Days 3-5, the temperature and humidity levels were both high. I’m a desert runner, so I don’t mind the heat of Utah, but I seldom ever experience running in humidity.
  • Day 6-7 as we neared Orlando, the temperature dropped.

cruise ship 5k

😋Q3: What if you eat too much on the ship?

I had to carefully plan my meal times and run times so I would feel good running.

  • I tried to always run before breakfast, and found it especially convenient to eat a light lunch and to run before dinner.
  • I also put a conscious effort into choosing healthy options.

🛳️Q4: With everything to see & do on the ship, how were you not distracted?

There is a lot to see and do on the ship.

  • Live entertainment around the clock.
  • Places to eat
  • Outdoor activities like surfing, ziplining, water slides, mini golf, swimming, relaxing, and exploring.
  • Having Tyler along as a running buddy was especially valuable. He helped me stay focused each day.

cruise ship 5k

💪Q5: Is there a gym on board with a treadmill?

A lot of people have commented to me that they can’t imagine anything worse than running a marathon on a cruise ship. . My response is:

  • “Running on a treadmill on a cruise ship would be worse.”
  • There is a gym on the 2nd deck. It has treadmills, stair climbers, and a lot of other exercise equipment.
  • There is also a bar with protein shakes available, and a spa offering multiple services including massages.

🌊Q6: Does the track offer a good view of the ocean?

The lifeboats blocked the view most of the time around the track.  . The deck is open on the back end of the ship, and this always allowed a welcome breeze and view of the sea as we ran past.

cruise ship 5k

📳Q7: Do running apps work while you’re running on a moving ship?

I mostly used Strava, though I tried the Apple watch app and the Nike Run app.

  • Each could record timing and other data accurately while the ship was moving.
  • However, my distance was always similar to what I estimated it to be.
  • For accuracy, we always counted laps. I promise, I don’t run as fast as the pics show.

cruise ship 5k

🍽️Q8: Are there healthy food options available on the ship?

There were endless options of food on the ship. . After running, I enjoyed meals high in protein. There were always plant proteins, as well as animal proteins available. I made it a point to explore and openly taste as many options as possible.

😋 Some of my favorites included:

  • Garbanzo bean and onion salad with lemon herb vinaigrette
  • Tomato, avocado, and tofu salad
  • Seafood linguine
  • Lobster tail
  • New York Strip Steak
  • Egg dishes were always plentiful at breakfast
  • Slice of pizza
  • Cup of chocolate milk

cruise ship 5k

🏃‍♂️Q9: Is the track crowded?

The track was never overly crowded. . But there were challenges everyday with aging adults, and children not observing the rules of the track.

👟Q10: What kind of running gear did you have?

  • 👟 Running Shoes: Saucony PWRrun
  • 👕 Running shirt running: Lululemon and Terramara
  • 🩳 Unlined running shorts: Lululemon and Nike
  • 🩲 Synthetic fabric underwear: Lululemon, Rundies, and Runderwear
  • 🧦 Wool running socks: Minus33, Near Earth, and Puma

👉 Check out all my WeeViews of running shoes and gear HERE .

🙋‍♂️Q11: Why not just run the whole distance in one day & get it over with?

I'm glad I spread my miles out over the course of the entire week.

  • There was too much to see and do on the ship to commit an extended amount of time to running.
  • This also helped me stay consistent with exercising each day.

cruise ship 5k

If you go: 5 lessons from the Cruise-Ship Marathon Challenge

👟 1. Wear running shoes

  • I am grateful I wore my running shoes when visiting the islands.
  • Through the week, my watch tracked over 30 miles of walking, in addition to our 28 miles of running.
  • I brought casual tennis shoes and flip flops on the trip, but these don’t provide good support for a lot of walking, and I ended up relying on my running shoes for comfort.

🩳 2. Bring a change of running clothes

  • Bring at least 2 sets of running clothes.
  • After each run, I washed my clothes in the shower and hung them to dry.
  • Sometimes my clothes weren’t completely dry when I was ready to run again.
  • Tyler told me that if I rolled up the clothes in a towel and squeezed real tight before hanging them up to dry, they would dry faster. He was right. Try it!

☝️ 3. Count laps

  • Normally, I prefer to not count laps. I try to avoid thinking about distance and time while running. However, the running apps I tested weren’t consistent, especially when the ship is moving. If you want to keep track of your distance, you’re going to have to count the laps.

🥵 4. Humidity increases chafing: Dress appropriately

  • On the hot humid days, my wool-blend underwear and socks were more effective than my synthetic-blend options.

🦵 5. Muscle fatigue is different

  • Running on a moving ship, even a large one like ours, has a strange effect on your leg muscles. My legs ached a lot more than usual after running each day.

🏃‍♂️ 6. Run with a partner

  • If possible, run with a buddy who will help keep you committed. Tyler ran the whole marathon with me. I don’t know if I would’ve done it without his consistent support.

🛳️Have you ran some miles on a cruise ship?

Tell us about it in the comments.

cruise ship 5k

Kimberly Bynum Thank you for this information. I will be on a 10 day cruise starting Monday. I plan on running on the track and walking around the ship to get my steps in everyday.

Jason Stucki Good luck, I hope you find it enjoyable! I’d love to hear about your experience after you finish. Have fun!

Castaway Cay 5K: What You Need to Know

by Jenn Marrazzo | Feb 15, 2022 | Castaway Cay , Castaway Club , Disney Cruise Line

The Disney Dream docked at Disney's Castaway Cay

Ever wonder what Disney’s Castaway Cay 5K is all about? Here’s what you need to know to get you ready for your next Disney Cruise to the Caribbean.

It’s a new year, which means we are all about getting into shape . There’s no better way than to run or walk along the sandy shores of Castaway Cay . If you’re heading on a Disney Cruise originating from a Florida port , you will most likely have a chance to visit the crystal blue waters of Disney’s Castaway Cay .

For fitness fiends, this island paradise offers more than just clear water and strong drinks. The Castaway Cay 5K is a free race that you can tackle while visiting Castaway Cay—and it’s a good way to burn off some of those calories from all that cruise dining.

We’ve compiled a list of frequently asked questions about the Castaway Cay 5K . If you still have more questions, connect with us on the DCL Magazine Facebook .

How Much Does the Castaway Cay 5K Cost?

Guests most frequently ask about the price for the Castaway Cay 5K . But that’s what we love most: The Castaway Cay 5K is free for guests to sign up.

Depending on your voyage, premium packages might be available for upgrade. In the past, these have included complimentary sign-up plus a swag bag with 5K merchandise that could be delivered to your stateroom.

Tap Here To Get On The Waitlist for DCL Magazine– A NEW Print Magazine from the Creators of WDW Magazine.

How Do You Register for the Castaway Cay 5K?

No need to register for the Castaway Cay 5K these days. The race is no longer classified as a group activity. That means that on your Castaway Cay day, just head to the island and run the course on your own time.

When you finish, you can check into your Disney Cruise Line Navigator app to learn where and when you can collect your medal for completing the course.

If there is some uncertainty regarding participation, you can always wait until you are onboard and head to Guests Services on your first day to for more information .

Does Weather Impact the Race?

The Disney Fantasy docked at Disney's Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay is an island located in the Bahamas. Therefore, weather is something that is always top of mind. From the wind to the possibility of rain, you might wonder if the 5K is impacted by weather.

The answer is yes, the Castaway Cay 5K is considered a weather-permitting event . If the crew aboard your Disney Cruise deems the weather to be unsafe for its participants, there is a chance that the event can be canceled.

Do I Have to be a Runner to Participate in the 5K?

A view of the remote bike paths around Disney's Castaway Cay

The best part about the Castaway Cay 5K is that you do not have to be a runner to participate . Since the 5K is a family-friendly event, runners and walkers alike are welcome to take part .

If you are someone who wants to run, go for it; plenty of people will be running the race. But if you aren’t a runner, don’t be intimidated— walking is encouraged as well!

How Long Is the Castaway Cay 5K? Is it Timed?

The name by itself sounds scary: You have to run or walk a 5K! But a 5K is really just 3.1 miles.

You’ll find an official clock at the start/end points, but it’s not there to create a competitive atmosphere. Despite the clock, this race is meant to be relaxed and fun, and your completion is not dependent on your running/walking time .

Can Kids Participate in the Castaway Cay 5K?

A view of the shore of Disney's Castaway Cay

Photo by Julie de la Fe

Another great part of the Castaway Cay 5K is that children 10 years and older can participate too . If you have little ones under the age of 10 who can’t participate, Disney’s Castaway Cay is home to their own children’s club, Scuttle’s Cove .

The Cast Members are the same ones who work at the Oceaneers Club on the ship; this is a fun area for kids to check out.

How Do I Find the Starting Location?

With a ship filled with thousands of people, how do you find the starting point for the Castaway Cay 5K? Prior to the race, you will be given a designated onboard meeting location .

As a group, you will head off the ship and toward the start. Of course, it’s Disney, so be sure to take a character picture before your race. The best part— when you participate in this race, you will be one of the first people to disembark the ship .

What Is the Castaway Cay 5K Route?

Donald Duck plane on the runway at Disney's Castaway Cay

The route is pretty simple. You are able to see and explore areas you might not have seen if you didn’t participate in the 5K. The race starts at the landing strip and takes you to the bike path, the adults beach, and back around the bike path again. And then you’re done!

As you’re running and walking, you’ll encounter water stations available to catch your breath and cool off. Be sure to take some selfies along the way to remember the fun experience.

Will I Receive a Medal When I’m Finished?

The best part of any race is the medal at the end. As previously mentioned, you are not officially timed during this race, so all participants receive a Castaway Cay 5K medal, no matter how long it takes you to finish.

The medal is a great way to show off your pride in completing the race. Plus, it makes for an amazing souvenir from your vacation.

Have you ever participated in a 5K on Disney’s Castaway Cay before? Share with us on our DCL Magazine Facebook page !

Disney Cruise Line CASTAWAY CAY 5K Details and Medals

By: Author tanialamb

Posted on Published: December 18, 2023

One of the things I loved most about visiting Castaway Cay with Disney Cruise Line was running the Castaway Cay 5k. The good news is you can still run it! The bad (or good) news, depending on how you look at it, is that it’s no longer a group race with race bibs. It’s a run-your-own-race type of deal now.

What You Need to Know About the Castaway Cay 5k 2024

Castaway Cay is Disney’s private island, and it’s gorgeous. It is always the highlight of our Disney Cruises. When Disney Cruise Line docks at Castaway Cay, you can run or walk a 5K on the island and receive a medal! A 5k is 3.1 miles.

In past years, the Castaway Cay 5k was an organized run with registration, bibs, timers, Cast Members as chEARleaders and it felt like a mini runDisney race.

Castaway Cay 5K Time Clock

Because of some Covid restrictions, in 2023 and 2024 the Castaway Cay 5k is a self-paced, run-when-you-want race.

When you disembark at Castaway Cay, you can run or walk the 5K whenever you want.

Follow the race signs down the old airstrip on Castaway Cay. You’ll start by the bike rental booth and continue to follow the signs around the bike path and down by Serenity Bay a little bit.

Castaway Cay 5K Disney Cruise Line

How Do You Sign Up for the Castaway Cay 5K?

There is no registration process for the Castaway Cay 5K on Disney Cruise Line. Anybody can run the Castaway Cay 5K, no matter the age. There used to be an age restriction for the Castaway 5k, but younger kids can now run, too.

Once you’re off your ship, you choose the time when you want to run and then head to the start line by the Bike Rental hut. You’ll see 5k markers along the way to direct you. Some of the Castaway Cay 5K race course is shared by the bike paths, so just be careful for bikers, too.

How Much Does it Cost to Run the Castaway Cay 5K?

Nothing, it’s free! The Castaway Cay 5K is free to run for all guests of Disney Cruise Line who stop at Castaway Cay.

Are There Water Stations on the Castaway Cay 5K Race Course?

There are water stations set up along the course for runners and bikers. If you wait until later in the day to run, sometimes the water jugs are down to their last drops.

Castaway Cay 5K Medal 2023

Don’t you worry, there are still Disney Cruise Line medals for the Castaway Cay 5k on Disney’s private island! And the Castaway Cay 5K Medal in 2023 is cute, too. Once you complete the 5k (running or walking), you can collect your medal at the Bike Rental Station. It’s based on the honor system, so if you put in the miles, then you deserve that medal, well rubber medallion.

Unfortunately, biking does not officially count for the 5k, but it’s still really fun to bike around the island.

We received this Castaway Cay 5K medallion in July 2022.

You don’t receive a shirt for running the Castaway Cay 5K like other runDisney races , but they usually have some type of merch to purchase on Castaway Cay.

Is the Castaway Cay 5k Worth It?

Castaway Cay is precious time for me and my family. Before when the race was early and you got off before all other guests, it made sense. Now that the hoopla and fanfare are gone, the Castaway Cay 5k is not quite as exciting.

However, if you love to run, want motivation to run or just want the bling, then go for it! If you’re traveling in the summer, I suggest running earlier in the day, because it gets really hot. Bring a change of clothes and put on your swimsuit and head to the beach afterwards!

Planning The Magic

Castaway Cay 5K Full Guide

castaway cay 5k

I have always said there are two types of people out there – those who get excited about running a 5K on Thanksgiving Day and those who think you’re joking when the former suggests it. I am proudly a member of the Turkey Trot Enthusiast Club. Because of that, I’d be the first to sign up for the Castaway Cay 5K on my next Disney Cruise, too.

And even if you are one of those who could not imagine their holiday ruined by 3.1 (sometimes cold) miles, I ask that you not disregard Disney races because no one does races quite as magical as Disney.

Why runDisney Races?

So you ask why Disney races are worth it even if I’m not an avid runner? Especially one that requires me to run on vacation. Well, first off, you don’t have to run. Walking is entirely allowed and sometimes even necessary.

Castaway Cay is Disney’s private island exclusively for guests of Disney Cruise. Even seasoned runners can struggle in the Bahamian heat so there is absolutely no shame in walking.

Secondly, I repeat that the Castaway Cay 5K is on a private island. Can you imagine how beautiful the course is? I find that the miles go by much more quickly when I love the scenery.

Also, because it is a private island, you don’t have the massive crowds other races do. Especially the ones at the Disney World park, because the number of people who can participate is limited to those on the ship.

If you aren’t a regular runner but want to participate in this unique shore excursion that no other cruise line offers, you won’t be the only one. Disney races, in general, aren’t for the elite of the elite. This isn’t Boston.

Disney races are definitely more for the “everyman” and are about fun, not competition. And there is nothing like the camaraderie of a runDisney Race with Disney Cruise Cast Members and other passengers along the race route to cheer you on.

Afterward, you share a sense of accomplishment with the other participants and earn a much-deserved beach day.

Also, unlike regular shore excursions, or Port Adventures, as Disney Cruises likes to call them, there is no additional charge to participate in the Castaway Cay 5K. A great workout, beautiful scenery, and the Castaway Cay 5K medal for free? Sign me up!

How Do You Sign Up?

Previously, you could sign up for the Castaway Cay 5K on the ship. Disney Cruise Line guests can pre-register for the 5K via My Cruise Reservations . Go to My Plans > Add Activities component for Castaway Cay days.

Today, you don’t have to worry about registering for the Castaway 5k in advance. Once you disembark from the ship at Castaway Cay, you can start the run whenever you like. The starting point is near the bike rental information booth, and the course is clearly marked with signs.

What About My Kids?

On a Disney Cruise, it is likely to be a family vacation with young kids, right? They don’t have to be left out of the Castaway Cay 5K run.

Runners as young as 10 can register for the race to get a commemorative race bib and medal. Runners under 10 are allowed on the course with their parents but do not get the bib or medal.

If you don’t want your younger children to participate in the event, you can drop them off at Scuttle’s Cove . This is done before the Castaway Cay 5K starts.

Scuttle’s Cove is Castaway Cay’s kid’s club so that adults can enjoy the 5K or adult time while on the island. They offer supervised child care and lots of fun activities.

It features a 1,200-square-foot soft wet deck area. This provides fresh-water fun with an array of pop jets, geysers, and bubblers, and Monstro’s Point—a giant whale-bone excavation site.

To take advantage of Scuttle’s Cove while running, bring them with you to the pre-race meeting on board the ship. You will then be allowed to disembark first to take them to Scuttle’s Cove before the race starts.

Race Day and the Race Route

The morning of the Castaway Cay 5K, per the ticket and letter you received the night prior, you will head to the meeting place on board the ship. Here you will be given instructions and ask questions if you have any. This is the meeting to bring your children to if you want to drop them off at Scuttle’s Cove prior to the start.

After disembarkation, as the group heads toward the start. If you’ve carried anything off the ship that you don’t want to hold on to during the race, lockers are available to store your stuff.

It is recommended, though, not to bring anything you don’t need while running. After the race, nothing will feel better than going back to the ship for a shower and a quick cool down.

After that, you can enjoy the rest of the day on Castaway Cay.

Castaway Cak 5K Route

The Castaway Cay 5K route starts at the island’s airstrip. You then go through a forested bike path and then a quick turn around at Serenity Beach (the adults-only beach) before going back through the bike path again to the finish.

The bike path is the only part of the race that is shaded. Be sure to lather on the sports sunscreen. The path is regularly used by other passengers who are not participating in the race. Listen closely to the pre-race instructions about where to run on the bike path.

There are two water stops along the course, and because you are in the Caribbean, it will be hot and humid. Staying hydrated throughout the Castaway Cay 5K is incredibly important.

The terrain of the race is predominantly level, although you may encounter some areas with sand that could impede your progress. Don’t worry, though; it’s all part of the fun! After all, this race is more about relishing the natural splendor of the island and having a good time rather than worrying too much about your speed or finishing time.

Castaway Cay 5k Map

Castaway cay 5k medal.

Every participant receives a Castaway Cay 5K medal as a souvenir. The medal features a colorful design, with the Castaway Cay logo and the words “5K finisher” inscribed on it.

It does change from year to year, but they are always awesome.

It’s a great keepsake to remember your run on this beautiful island paradise!

castaway cay 5k medal

This is my favorite part of any race I participate in and usually my biggest motivator – the medal. If a race doesn’t give out a medal, I don’t sign up because I basically collect them.

A Castaway Cay 5K finisher’s medal is included in the free price of the race registration along with a commemorative race bib, and it is a collectible. If you want other race swag, shirts, and other Castaway Cay 5K items can be purchased at the Buy the Shore Souvenir Shop.

Free registration gets you an exclusive Castaway Cay 5K medal. For an additional charge, a Premium Package option is also available, where participants receive a Disney Castaway Cay 5K cinch sack, water bottle, and hat.

Castaway Cay 5K Challenge

You may have encountered the Castaway Cay Challenge in your Google research of the Castaway Cay 5K. This is slightly different.

Although the 5K takes place every time a Disney ship docks at Castaway Cay, the runDisney Castaway Cay Challenge happens every January after Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend .

The Marathon weekend this year is January 6-10.

castaway cay 5k

To complete the Castaway Cay Challenge, you must run a race at Disney World during Marathon Weekend. This can be anything from a 5K to a full Marathon.

Then, participate on the 4-night cruise that departs Port Canaveral on January 11th. In the Castaway Cay 5K. You will then have completed the Castaway Cay Challenge.

In addition to the Castaway Cay 5K medal, you will receive a special Castaway Cay Challenge medal. This changes every year and a participant t-shirt.

The Castaway Cay Challenge is perfect for those planning a Land and Sea Adventure with Disney. Which Disney makes incredibly easy and convenient.

Guilt-Free Vacation

If you’ve ever cruised, you know how indulgent cruises can be – all-you-can-eat food and snacks and drink, three-course dinners, lots of lounging, etc.

You should enjoy your once or twice-a-year (if that) vacation to the fullest. Still, the beautiful private island Castaway Cay, 5K with family and fellow passengers, is the perfect way to indulge guilt-free.

Disney Castaway Cay balls with Mickey, Pluto, Donald, and Goofy's faces on it

The Disney Castaway Cay 5K is a 3.1-mile run or walk hosted by Disney Cruise Line on their private island, Castaway Cay. This 5K is a great way to explore the developed inland areas of this beautiful island, extending beyond the coastal regions.

Along the route, you will encounter an observation tower offering panoramic views of the entire island. fun fact: most of the island is maintained in its natural state you can also get a great picture of your cruise ship from this lookout tower, what sets the disney castaway cay 5k apart is its flexibility. there is no fixed start time, and there is no minimum time requirement for each mile. you have the freedom to participate at a time that suits your vacation experience best while on the island. you can also complete the 5k at your own pace - this allows you the perfect opportunity to blend fitness and exploration into your disney cruise experience.

Prop airplane on the 5K route

How much does it cost?

The Disney Castaway Cay 5K is free to participate in!

How do you sign up?

No formal sign-up is required since the 5K is now a complete-at-your-leisure race since COVID-19. As such, you will not receive a race bib as you would previously when it was an organized run.

Do you still get a finisher's medal?

Yes, you do! However, it is more so a rubber medallion rather than a RunDisney races medal.

Where does it start?

The 5K starts near the bike rental booth, located at the second tram stop on the island. The route is easily navigable and marked with clear signs along the path. Commencing from the starting line, the course leads participants along the airplane landing strip runway and through a side loop where the observation tower stands.

Serenity Bay, adults-only area at Disney's Castaway Cay

Following this loop, runners return to the airplane runway, heading towards Serenity Bay, situated at the end of the runway. Upon reaching this point, participants loop back, making their way to the starting line, which conveniently serves as the finish line as well!

Disney cruise tip: you can stop for a quick snack or ice cream cone at serenity bay if you are 18+ since this is the adults-only section. you can also stop at cookie’s bbq once you finish the race for a celebratory meal, snack, drink, or ice cream cone - no matter your age .

Are there water stations?

Yes, there are two water stations along the path. However, if you are able, bring your own water bottle to not chance the water stations being empty.

When is the best time to complete the 5K?

Waterslides at Pelican Point at Disney's Castaway Cay

On a hot sunny day, it is best to complete the 5K in the morning before the blazing hot sun comes out for the day. With that, once you have completed the race, you can head over to Pelican Point and go on one of the water slides to help cool you down! During these times of the year, do not forget sunscreen, water, your bathing suit, and a change of clothes.

On a colder day at castaway cay, as we got on our recent disney cruise, any time of the day works however, you should still bring sunscreen and water..

Can I bike the 5K?

An anchor with DCL on it. Found in the 5k loop

According to the Crew Member in the bike rental area, you cannot bike the 5K. Although, the 5K route and the bike path are the same. However, we were informed that you could not receive a finisher's medal if you completed the 5K by bike. You may ask yourself, "Well, how would they know?" But, it is all about the honor system with the Disney Castaway Cay 5K.

Is the 5K suitable for all ages?

Yes! Since you can complete this fun run at your own pace, the 5K is suitable for all ages.

What if I have kids who are not participating?

If you prefer to complete the race without the kiddos, you can drop them off at Scuttle's Cove, the Kids Club at Castaway Cay!

Why should I complete the 5K?

View from the Observation Tower at Disney's Castaway Cay

If you are like me, you do not correlate a cruise vacation with a 5K, nor would you typically want to complete one on land. However, this 5K is free, it is mostly on flat land, it allows you to check out parts of Castaway Cay that you would not normally see being on the beach, and you will get a cool medallion when you finish the race! Yes, there are other Port Adventures you can do while at Castaway Cay, but since the 5k is at your own pace, you can do it before or after your excursion!

Our Experience

DLT! with the Castaway Cay 5k rubber medallion

We went on our very first Disney Cruise in mid-January 2024, and on the day we docked at Castaway Cay, it was 63 degrees outside. Since it was cold out, we did not worry about being the first few people off the ship. Instead, we had a nice breakfast at Marceline Market, grabbed our jackets, and headed off the ship a couple of hours after we docked.

We rode the tram to the second stop, found some seats to drop off our stuff, grabbed lunch, and began the 5k. we walked the whole way, climbed the observation tower, stopped at serenity bay for a quick snack, and continued on the route at the end of the race, we stopped at the bike rental station, informed the crew member, and received our medallion .

Whether you’re a seasoned runner, recreational jogger, or you just love to walk, there’s a fun way to burn off some energy during your Disney cruise and earn a medal as proof – the Castaway Cay 5K!

This exclusive 5K race has become well-known among Disney cruisers. While it’s been offered for many years, a lot has changed! What is the Castaway Cay 5K?

The Castaway Cay 5K is a free race that any guest on any Disney Cruise Line ship can participate in when they stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay. The 3.1 mile course is a great way to see the island. The flat paved course takes you past many of the island’s landmarks, including the observation tower, the iconic Castaway Cay sign, and more.

Castaway Cay 5K

While the race used to take place in the morning with participants needing to start their day bright and early, the Castaway Cay 5K is now a fun run. This means that you can start your race any time of the day.

If you’re not a runner, don’t worry! The 5K is open to all fitness levels, and many participants choose to walk the course instead of running. Plus, there are water stations set up along the course for runners and bikers. So, you don’t have to worry about the heat if you prefer a slower start to your day.

Do I need to register for the Castaway Cay 5K?

No! In the past, the Castaway Cay 5K was classified as a group activity, and guests had to sign up for the event in advance. However, this is no longer the case. The race is now considered a self-guided activity. This means that you don’t need to register or sign up in advance. Just show up on the day of the event and make your way to the starting line.

It’s worth noting that the 5K is a popular event. So, you might want to arrive early to avoid crowds and ensure that you have plenty of time to complete the course.

How much is the 5K at Castaway Cay?

The Castaway Cay 5K is free for all guests on a Disney Cruise Line ship that stops at Castaway Cay. That’s right, there’s no cost to participate in the 5K!

In the past, Disney has offered a Castaway Cay Challenge as part of the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend (which usually takes place in January). This challenge was an additional cost; however, it did not return in 2023.

Can kids run the Castaway Cay 5K?

The Castaway Cay 5K is a family-friendly event open to anyone 10 years of age or older. However, Disney does permit younger children to participate if they are being pushed in a stroller by an adult. Just note that they may not receive a medal since they can’t officially participate.

Where is the starting line?

The starting line for the Castaway Cay 5K is located near the bike rental information booth. Since the race is a fun run and self-timed, you can make your way to the start area whenever you’re ready. And, once you’re off, be sure to keep an eye out for 5K signage to keep you on the right course.

What is the race course like?

The Castaway Cay 5K race course is a scenic route through some of the best areas of the island. The course is well-marked and easy to navigate, with signage stationed along the way to provide guidance and support.

The 5K course begins near the bike rental area and takes you along a paved, flat path that winds through the island. You’ll pass by the post office, the observation tower, and the airstrip before reaching the halfway point at Serenity Bay. You’ll then pass by the family beach and the dock before crossing the finish line near the bike rental area.

Castaway Cay 5K

Are there water stations on the race course?

Yes, there are several water stations set up along the course for runners and bikers to stay hydrated during the race. We recommend bringing your own water bottle with you if you’re traveling during a particularly warm season or planning to run later in the day. It can get very hot once the sun is up.

Is the Castaway Cay 5K timed?

No, the Castaway Cay 5K is a self-timed run. If you’d like to time your race, we recommend wearing a sports watch with GPS capabilities, using a stopwatch, or simply check the time when you start and finish. But, the Castaway Cay 5K isn’t about how fast you complete it – everyone gets a medal whether it takes you 20 minutes or 2 hours!

What should I pack for the 5K?

Castaway Cay can be very hot and humid (especially if you plan to run later in the day). So, it’s important that you pack the right things for your 5K race!

It’s important to wear comfortable clothing that is appropriate for the weather conditions on the day of the race. We recommend bringing clothes that are made of lightweight and breathable fabrics. Many athletic brands make clothing that is moisture-wicking to help you feel cooler when the weather is particularly hot.

You’ll also want to be sure that you have supportive running or walking shoes, socks that won’t give you blisters, and sunscreen with a high SPF to protect your skin. While there is some shade along the course, we also recommend packing a hat and sunglasses and bringing along a water bottle to stay hydrated.

Remember that the Castaway Cay 5K is a fun run. So, there’s no need to bring any high-tech running gear or gadgets. However, if you do plan on listening to music during the race, be sure to bring headphones that won’t fall out while you run.

Castaway Cay 5K

Do you receive a medal for running the 5K?

Yes! Anyone who runs the Castaway Cay 5K can receive a medal at the end regardless of whether you walk or run.

Once you complete the 3.1 mile course, you can collect your medal at the Bike Rental Station near the start (and finish) line. It’s based on the honor system, so if you put in the miles, then you deserve that medal!

Unfortunately, biking does not officially count for the 5K.

Is the Castaway Cay 5K worth it?

If you’re considering the Castaway Cay 5K during your Disney Cruise, you may be wondering if it’s worth it. Here are some things to consider:

  • The Castaway Cay 5K is a fun activity to do during your day on the island. You’ll get to explore the beautiful scenery and see most of the island while earning a unique medal!
  • The race is free to participate in and open to all fitness levels. Plus, you’ll get to say that you exercised during your vacation which definitely calls for an extra ice cream cone!
  • You’ll receive a commemorative medal upon completion of the race, which can be a nice souvenir to take home.
  • The Castaway Cay 5K can only be run at Castaway Cay on a Disney cruise! So, this is one of the only chances you’ll ever have to earn the exclusive finisher medal.
  • The race is weather-permitting, so there’s a chance it could be canceled if conditions are deemed unsafe.
  • Speaking of weather, temperatures and humidity levels can get very high on Castaway Cay as the day goes on.
  • The race is not timed, so if you’re looking to set a personal record or compete against others, this may not be the event for you.

Overall, whether or not the Castaway Cay 5K is worth it really depends on your personal preferences and priorities. If you enjoy exercise and want to experience the island in a unique way, it could be a great choice. However, if you’re not interested in running or walking, or if you just want to spend more time on the beach, you may want to skip it. There are still plenty of other fun activities on the island!

Castaway Cay 5k – Everything You Must Know About this Amazing Event!

We have now been on so MANY Disney Cruises and the one thing that I have thought about doing every single cruise is the Castaway Cay 5k.

Normally, I am dreaming of being in one of the amazing Castaway Cay Cabanas while visiting Castaway Cay, but this time, I wanted to finally experience the 5k.

Are you also thinking of experiencing the Castaway Cay 5K? Well, GOOD NEWS, we went ahead and broke it all down for you on everything you need to know before you book you Disney Cruise Line Vacation!

What is the Castaway Cay 5K?

The Castaway Cay 5k is a “short” 3.1 mile tour of the island that will get your morning kick-started before anyone else gets on the island. If you’ve ever wanted to take on this fun event, here are all the details!

Castaway Cay 5k

How do I Sign up for the Castaway Cay 5k

When I first tried to sign up for the Castaway Cay 5k online it said it was already full. So, I decided to check once I got on board. It turns out that is when you sign up for the 5k. I recommend signing up on the first day, earlier in the day as the Castaway Cay 5k does fill up.

The price of the 5k is the best, it is completely FREE! It’s completely free to sign up for, but spaces fill quickly.

I really was trying to push my daughter to do the run with me since the last time she wanted to but was only 9 years old.

The minimum age to be apart of the 5k is 10 years old. During the run I was seeing small children jogging and walking with their parents, it turns out kids can participate they just will not get an official runners race bib or medal.

The other thing I learned is this event is that it is not just for runners. If you want to just enjoy a nice brisk walk you can enjoy the 5k as well and easily complete the 5k.

You Must Attend a Mandatory Meeting!

To participate in the Castaway Cay 5K, all you need to do is sign up at the bike rental station near the start line earlier in the day. The 5K course takes you through some of the most beautiful areas of the island, including the serene Serenity Bay.

There you will receive a safety briefing, get your runners bib and even sign up last minute if there are any open spots. The meeting takes about 20 minutes and is mandatory if you want to be a part of the 5k.

Race Day: What to Expect

First on the island.

On the day of the 5k run, you will be the first guests allowed off the ship and onto Disney’s Private Island.

When it’s time to run the 5K, make sure to arrive at the start line early. The race typically starts at 9:30 am, but you’ll want to give yourself enough time to check in and stretch before the race begins.

There you will get a short review of the running route and a couple of quick reminders.

Once you’re at the start line, the energy is contagious as you join your fellow runners in anticipation of the race.

What to do with the kids who aren’t running

If you have little kids who need parental supervision while you are running you can drop them off at Castaway Cay’s own Kids Club, Scuttles Cove.

It is the same staff that runs the Oceaneer’s club onboard except it is just a fun area on the island for the kids to explore.

What to Wear!

The weather is usually warm year-round at castaway to prepare to drink lots of fluid and be dressed in some warm weather gear. Shorts, T-Shirt and Athletic Shoes will suffice for this fun run

What is the Course Layout

The course takes you on alongside the path of the castaway beach, down the island’s airstrip, through a nice somewhat shaded greenery section that heads to a lookout tower and then you turn around to go back.

There are two water stops and a few places to take a quick photo opportunity. It is pretty much the same path you take on the bike path if you have rented a bike from Castaway in the past.

As you make your way through the course, you’ll find water stations set up to keep you hydrated. The course is mostly flat, but there are some sandy patches that may slow you down. Don’t worry too much about your time, though; the focus of this race is on having fun and enjoying the island’s natural beauty.

Disney Cruise Line Cast Members are throughout the path to direct you and also cheer you on.

Castaway Cay Path

In addition to amazing views and fun photo spots, the course is flat, so no hills to worry about. This is a nice and flat path! Woohoo!

What’s Included in the Castaway Cay 5k

With every RunDisney Race comes a fun medal which you receive at the finish line to show you accomplished this amazing feat.

Since people take Disney Cruises year after year, each year there is a new medal for avid runners who love the Castaway Cay 5k.

Land & Sea – Run Disney’s Castaway Challenge

When we were staying at the Riviera Resort before the cruise we saw a lot of runners preparing for the Princess 10k. Many said they are running the castaway cay 5k after the princess run to complete the Castaway Challenge, which is one of the many RunDisney events.

It turns out you can earn a  special “Castaway Challenge Medal” by running a race during Marathon Weekend (5k distance or longer), in January or February at Walt Disney World, and then run the Castaway 5k during the sailing on the Dream right after marathon weekend.

You would earn 3 medals total for participation. You must register in advance and it does sell out.  There is also a charge for this. The next Castaway Challenge is in January of 2021 and the price is $80. You can check out all the Run Disney Challenges Here!

All in all, this is a great event to start the day, stay healthy and then relax with the family on this beautiful island and continue enjoying your Disney Vacation.

100 MILES TRACKER

Run Eat Repeat

Walking a 5K on the Pacific Ocean

Hello! Today I was all over the place – literally. We woke up somewhere on the Pacific Ocean, I walked a 5K on the deck of a ship then went to Canada. Ha! So much packed into one day. I love it. Princess Cruises and the On Deck for the Cure Foundation coordinate a 5K walk on most of their cruises to raise money for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation.

20150530_140301 (800x600)

First let’s start with  my run and eat for the day. I hit the treadmill for about 8 miles. I am not a huge fan of the treadmill, but had to make it work. So, I downloaded the Serial podcasts and have been listening to those. HELLO. I am obsessed with the series so it’s perfect. I look forward to my run or walk so much because then I get to listen.

256x256_fit_one_bestfit (184) (256x341)

Breakfast has been so amazing. I love oatmeal made in big quantities for some reason? Like every time I’m on vacation and eat at a buffet with oatmeal I think it’s so good. Plus, I get all crazy with the toppings. Other breakfast foods to note: the  omelets, hash browns, fruit and smoothies. I love all of it.

Gotta carb load for my 5K walk…

20150530_163207 (800x600)

5K on a Cruise Ship

You can sign up right on the ship at any  point in the cruise (before the walk starts). It is a $15.00 donation to participate. And you get a baseball cap.

IMG_20150530_215701 (800x800)

I mentioned yesterday 2.5 laps around Deck 7 equals 1 mile. So the 5K is about 8 laps around Deck 7. This cruise’s 5k walk was super informal and small. I’ve heard up to 100 people have participated on one cruise before. This time there was only about a dozen of us.

20150530_151826 (600x800)

Dan was one of the runners. He actually got 1st place! They didn’t really give out places or prizes. It’s a non-competitive walk. But I declared him the winner and he accepted my decision as the official results.

20150530_214804 (600x800)

After the walk I did some major damage at the buffet. I am obsessed with massive salads (and desserts).

20150530_153120 (600x800)

After the walk my mom and I finally had some downtime to just relax and enjoy the views. This whole trip has been strawberry jam packed with excursions and delicious meals and activities!! I’ve loved every minute, but haven’t had the chance to just be lazy.

20150530_181418 (600x800)

The group of bloggers on this trip had one last hurrah before we headed to Canada. We met up for happy hour. And it was extra happy with this drink of the day = El Mejor Margarita (the best margarita).

20150530_182839 (600x800)

Then, it was time for our final stop of the cruise. We went to Victoria, British Columbia. I don’t think I’ve ever been to Canada before so I was excited!

This was actually a super late arrival. We docked at 7pm and didn’t need to be back until 11:30pm. So, my mom and I decided to explore Victoria on foot. There are shuttles you can take into town, but it really wasn’t far. (I think a lot of the passengers of an Alaska cruise are an older demographic so they offer easy ways to get from one place to another. You don’t really need shuttle or taxi if you’re okay with walking a few miles total on this stop.)

20150530_214956 (800x600)

Finally it was time to head back to the Ruby Princess and eventually back to the real world. Tomorrow I wake up in Seattle and go home.

Question: Have you ever been to Canada eh?

OMG! I am so jealous of all your pictures… The food, the spa treatment, the margarita! And a 5K for a great cause. I have never been on a cruise, but from what I have seen in this blog entry… I should definitely go sometime. Have fun!

Your cruise looks amazing – I want to go!

I’ve been to Canada many times – I grew up in the Detroit area and we use to be able to go over to Windsor easily. It was very convenient when the legal drinking age was 19 in Canada 🙂 This was before 9/11 so boarder crossing was easy.

On a related side note the Detroit Free Press Marathon and Half has an international option where the course includes passing in to Canada – that run is on my list!

I am so jealous of your trip! I’m glad you had a great time and so sweet that you got to share it with your mom. I have been to Canada many times, but I live about ten minutes from the border in Buffalo. Sometimes we just go across the bridge to get dinner 🙂

I’ve been to Canada a bunch of times, but to the same places over and over: Niagara Falls and Toronto. A few years ago I went to Osheaga music festival in Montreal; first time there. It was a beautiful city.

I have not been to Canada however I met some of the best people in college who were at my school in Wisconsin to play lacrosse. Nicest people around. Also the blue top you’re wearing in one of your photos. What is the brand/where do they sell it?

Disney’s Castaway Cay 5K (Guide To Plan The Best Race)

Are you excited to run Disney's Castaway Cay 5K?  I know exactly how you feel.

When I booked my Disney Cruise with a stop at Castaway Cay, I was excited to learn that there was a Castaway Cay 5K.  I love running and knew I had to do it!

In this post, I am going to share with you everything you need to do to run the Castaway Cay 5K.  I will give lots of details about where to meet, the race route, and where to pick up your medal!

The 5K Castaway Cay race was one of my favorite things to do on Castaway Cay!

Let's learn all about the Disney Castaway Cay 5k.

If you want to save this information for later be sure to pin this to Pinterest.

This post may contain affiliate links (Including Amazon) that will give me a commission at no additional charge to you.

Is There a 5K Run on Cataway Cay?

A lot of you might be wondering if there is still a Castaway Cay 5K on Disney's private island.  The answer is Yes!  A lot of things have changed over the years but the Castaway Cay 5K is still available. Let's answer some of the questions you might have.

Do You Have to Be on a Disney Cruise to Run the Castaway Cay 5k?

Yes, the only way to get to Disney's private island is by booking a Disney Cruise .  We recently booked a cruise on the Disney Wish that had a planned stop on Castaway Cay.

How Much is the Castaway Cay 5K?

The 5K Castaway Cay Disney race is FREE! Yes, no cost! Most of the RunDisney Races at Disneyworld and Disneyland do cost money, but on Castaway Cay it is included in the cost of your Disney Cruise.

Do You Have to Register for the Castaway Cay 5K?

No, In the past you had to register to participate in the 5K Castaway Cay race. Now you do not need to do anything.

Is There a Set Time I Need to Run the Disney Castaway 5K?

No, You can get off the ship and start the Castaway Cay 5K anytime you want.  In the summer, it is probably better to get up early and run before the sun gets too hot.

Do I Need a Running Bib for the 5K Castaway Cay Race?

No, In the past they did hand these out and had an official timer.  You would start with everyone who was participating and run the race as a group. It was more of a traditional race.

Now, this is a go-at-your-own-pace race.  You will time yourself, pace yourself, and start and finish on your own terms.  This allows everyone who would like to participate the chance to.

Every ship that has a stop at Castaway Cay has the ability to run the Castaway Cay 5K as long as the weather is agreeable.

Can You Walk the Castaway Cay 5k?

Yes, you can run or walk the Castaway 5K, but you can not bike it! Because this is self-paced it is totally fine to walk!

How Long is the Castaway Cay 5K?

A 5K is equal to 3.1 miles.

Where Do I Go on Start the Castaway Cay 5K?

I was so confused about where to start this self-paced race.  I stopped by the information booth and was told to head to the bike rental location.

This is where you will be shown the Castaway Cay 5K map and route.  You will also head back here to get your Castaway Cay 5K medal.

Castaway Cay 5K Map

I tried to draw on the Castaway Cay 5K map!  You will start at the bike rental location and follow the path until you get to the main road.  You will see the trams headed to Serenity Bay. (The Adult only area of the island.)

There will be markers all along the 5K Castaway Cay path.  You will see an airplane, this is the first loop you will make. You then head to Serenity Bay, and back to make another loop.  You finish by running straight back to the bike rental booth.

Disneys Castaway Cay 5k Route

The Castaway Cay 5K map gives you an idea of where to go but we are going to show you a lot of images and landmarks so you can recognize them as you are running.

Some people were confused about the Castaway Cay 5K route while we were running.  I didn't think it was too difficult but just so you know for sure let's lay it out!

Start the Castaway Cay 5K

You will walk a short distance from the bike rental booth and see the Castaway Cay 5K start sign.   From here you take a short path to the main road.

This is where you will want to start your smartwatch and begin your self-paced time.

What to Look For As you Run the Castaway Cay 5K

It is always good to have a visual.  As you run along the main road to Serenity Bay you will see an airplane that says bike path.  There is also a red sign the says Castaway Cay 5K.

This is a loop.  You will run the entire loop and exit this area.

Observation Tower

My husband is so much faster than me.  I really concentrated on running the 5K.  He let me run ahead and decided to go up the observation tower which is located on the Castaway Cay 5K trail.

It is a really great view of Castaway Cay.  He was able to look out and see the DisneyWish ship that we sailed on.  It also was surprising how undeveloped Castaway Cay is.  There are a lot of trees.  There are binoculars at the top of the observation area.

He easily caught back up to me, even though I was running my heart out!

Markers Along the 5K Castaway Route!

Towards the end of the loop, you will see signs that help you know how far you have until you finish the loop.  This was so helpful for me.

I love the encouragement that you only have a little more to go!

Head to Castaway Cay Serenity Bay

After you exit the loop you will head towards Serenity Bay.  If you get tired and think you can't run anymore there is a tram stop at the end of the road.  (But keep going, you need that medal!)

This might be the tricky part for some people.  You will run back to the loop and run it again. Yes, you read that right! You end up running the loop 2 times.

Is There a Drink Station for the Castaway Cay 5K?

Yes, there is a drink station located at the entrance of the loop.  This is a fantastic spot because you will pass by a few times as you enter the loop and exit the loop.

I stopped and grabbed some cold water before heading back to the finish line.

Castaway Cay Medal

After your second loop, you can run right back to the bike rental booth and claim your medal.

Castaway Cay 5K Medal

These medals are so cute! I love getting medals.  They say “Castaway Cay 5K” and “I run on Vacay”  They are fantastic souvenirs and absolutely free.  It is totally worth running to get the medal for me!

What Do I Need to Bring to Run the Castaway Cay 5k?

The most important thing is to bring yourself!!  I brought my husband along too. Kids 10 and up are welcome to run the Castaway Cay 5k.  When I run I have a few items that I always bring.

Things to Bring on the Castaway Cay 5K

  • Apple Watch or Garmin
  • Disney Apple Watch Band
  • Running Belt with Extra Water
  • Change of Clothes
  • Flip Flops for after you run

The path is paved so you will want to wear good shoes like Brooks .   I actually wore my trail running shoes because I didn't have enough room to pack multiple pairs.  It was all good.

You will also want to bring a change of clothes.  You probably don't want to have to go back to the ship after you run.  Just bring all of your beach gear and swimsuit and change in the bathrooms after you run the Castaway 5K race.

What Do I Do with my Kids While I Run the Disney Castaway Cay 5K?

If you have young kids under the age of 10, you can check them in at Scuttles Cove while you run.

This is the kids club that is located on Castaway Cay.  It is a lot of fun with activities that will keep them busy while you get some exercise.

It is super nice that there is a kids' club option.  You can also enjoy some time at Serenity Bay while your kids play at Scuttles Cove.

Are You Ready to Run the Disney Castaway Cay 5K?

Are you ready to run the Disney Castaway Cay 5k race?  I love running and 5K's are my jam!  The Castaway Cay 5k is a great way to get a good workout and an awesome souvenir.

I am a fan of exercising while on vacation. After I finished the Castaway Cay 5K I felt awesome and ready to jump into the ocean.  I highly recommend the 5k Castaway Cay race.

Castaway Cay 5k Run

Exclusive to Disney Cruise Line’s guests this 5K run is another fun activity for the whole family offered by Disney at their private island Castaway Cay.

cruise ship 5k

How and Where do I sign up for 5K?

Adults must sign up at the Guest Services at anytime when you board Disney Cruise until the night before the ship docks at Castaway Cay. A ticket will be handed out for every member of the family (10 years and over) that is participating in the 5K run. It is free of charge and contains important informations like, the time and venue where you will all gather and meet with the other runners. These infos will also be indicated in your daily Personal Navigator, it is important to check it in case there’s any changes in time and venues.

At the time of check-in a photo ID and KTTW card will be required, so remember to bring them. Then a bib will be handed out to all runners registered. Other members of the family and friends who are not participating in the 5K run can join their family members who are running. 5K runners, their families and friends will be the first to go down the ship as soon as they receive clearance from Castaway Cay.

For those families who have small children, you can drop off your children at the Scuttles Cove, it is the kids club on the island just like the Oceaneer’s Club/Lab.

What are the routes for the 5K run?

Video by Lance Parcell

Once all the bibs are given and check-in are done, the 5K run director will come out and will give an instruction on the route you will take at Castaway Cay. The run will start at the Bike Rental area, there’s a big bin where you can all drop your personal belongings before the run. The route varies… when we did the 5K run we were instructed to run the bike loop twice, then straight the air strip towards the Serenity Bay, and head back to the finish line at the bike rental where we started.

All runners, their families and friends are usually off the ship around 8:30am and have a nice brisk walk towards the Bike Rental area where the starting line is. There, they will show you again your route for the 5K in a large map. There will be several water stops throughout the course. **Please do not toss your cups on the bushes or the ground, there are trashcans for that.

cruise ship 5k

When you get to the finish line, there will be a Cast Member waiting for you handing out medals to all runners, and a photographer that will take your finish photos.

Virgin Voyages Offering MONTH-Long Europe Cruises for Just $5K Per Person

Don’t have summer plans yet? A new offer from Virgin Voyages may change that quickly.

In what the cruise line is dubbing its “ Scarlet Summer Season Pass, ” Virgin is giving passengers the chance to sail Europe for an entire month aboard Scarlet Lady, starting at a price of just under $5,000 per person .

Scarlet Lady docked in The Bahamas

In all, passengers have the option of four different trips sailing this summer , with one trip each departing in June, July, August, and September. Each sailing is made up of four separate 7-day cruises, all combined into one trip at a discount.

For instance, the trip departing in June runs from June 9 through July 7. It departs Barcelona, visiting Marseille, Cannes, Mallorca, and Ibiza before returning after one week (the line’s ‘French Daze & Ibiza Nights’ route). Then it sails the ‘Irresistible Med & Rome’ route with stops in France and Italy, followed by a repeat of the ‘French Daze’ before wrapping up with the ‘Irresistible Med’ that includes stops like Marina di Carrara, Ajaccio, and Corsica.

While pricing will vary depending on when you sail, Virgin says that the cost starts at $9,990 for the month-long journey .

In other words, you can skip around the Mediterranean and Europe for an entire month with room, entertainment, and meals at a price of about $180 per person, per day. (Taxes and fees will cost extra.) Virgin says the price is up to 30% off booking the four trips independent of each other.

And that price isn’t for some bottom-tier interior cabin either. It’s for a central “Sea Terrace” cabin, which is lingo for a balcony cabin on the ship. So you’ll get to see plenty of sunshine in your own private space during the cruise.

Lots Included With Your Fare for Four Weeks in Europe

What stands out to us, however, is that Virgin Voyages includes most extras with your cruise . Take this trip on a normal cruise line and the cruise fare is just the start of what you’d pay. There would also be gratuities, meals on the ship, charges for wi-fi, and more.

Virgin is more all-inclusive. Practically everything except alcohol is included on the ship, including all meals, basic drinks including sodas, and wi-fi access (huge, given the length of this trip). In addition there are extra perks for travelers booking this deal will receive, including laundry service, a $10 daily credit for specialty coffee, early access to booking reservations and shore excursions, and access to “Richard’s Rooftop” — a private sundeck for members only.

Now if you’re a family, then no, you won’t be able to take advantage as Virgin is adults-only. However, for those with the ability to take a month off in the summer — or work from the ship — this seems like one of the most cost-effective ways to experience a wide swath of Europe and the Mediterranean in comfort for (relatively) cheap.

To book, you’ll have to reach out to the cruise line directly via the Season Pass webpage here .

We sailed Virgin Voyages to the Caribbean and came away very impressed with the cruise line. For more on our experience and how the line is different, check out our articles here and here .

Run The World: Disney Cruise Line Edition!

Whether you’re running a runDisney event, or simply logging miles on Disney World property, every mile really is magic at Disney! Recently, I had the opportunity to take my Disney running to the next level when I traveled aboard the Disney Magic. I learned that it’s not only possible to keep your training up while cruising, but it can be a lot more fun than you might think!

In this post, I will share three run categories: Indoor Training, Outdoor Training, and even a runDisney “Race, ” so lace up your running shoes…and let’s go!

Indoor Training

Sure, I know what you’re saying: it’s a treadmill. But really, if you’re on a cruise and looking to run several miles on your training plan, it is an option that you should consider while aboard. Several treadmills line the front window of the Fitness Center and are generally available throughout standard operating hours. I visited at 8 AM on our “At Sea” day and had no problem securing a treadmill located in the center of the room.

The current machines are “Life Fitness” models and have many technological touches to keep your workout as enjoyable as possible – you can hook your headphones right into the machine and watch TV, listen to your iPod, or select options on the touch screen to visualize trail runs, track workouts, and more…though honestly, I could not take my eyes off the gorgeous blue water outside! It was a really neat feeling to feel like you’re flying above the waves!

PROS: Fitness center is easily accessible on Deck 9 forward (check your Personal Navigator for hours; during our cruise, the schedule was 6:30 AM to 10:30 PM daily), and towel, water, and shower facilities are available and free of charge.

CONS: Rough waters could cause your treadmill run to be an exercise in balance, but for the most part, indoor training is a comfortable option for logging longer runs.

Outdoor Training

Accessing the jogging track is easy – walk out onto the outdoor deck area and get your feet moving! The distance of one full lap is 1/3 mile, so just take the distance you want to run in miles, and multiply that by three for the amount of times you need to run around.

PROS: Running the track is fun and scenic – when else can you run on the ocean? Also, there are water fountains on both sides of the deck, and the distance is long enough to not get too repetitive.

CONS: Not necessarily a “con” per se, but a word of caution – this track is not only shared by walkers, joggers, runners, but cruise and maintenance staff, so be sure to be aware of your surroundings. I would recommend running “unplugged ” (sans headphones) and taking advantage of the safety mirrors in the forward and aft sections of the running track.

The runDisney Castaway Cay 5K

Ahh, the best for last! I was the most excited about this event – especially since I had heard that the somewhat “unofficial” event had been promoted to a full-fledged “runDisney” experience!

Getting involved in this event was easy:

  • Visit Guest Services anytime before arriving at Castaway Cay
  • Show up at the time indicated on your ticket on Castaway Cay day
  • Bring your ID, Key to the World (KTTW) card and your ticket – then pick up your bib and you’re good to go!

Really, it’s that easy – and unlike other runDisney events, it’s totally free! Wahooo!

Although details may differ on different itineraries, our race morning was very easy and straightforward: after presenting our KTTW, we were briefed by our friendly cruise staff and told that we’d be the first to disembark the ship at Castaway Cay. As a group, we all swiped out of the ship and walked to the bike rental area, where the course was verbally reviewed, and at 8:30 AM, we were off!

The course is relatively simple: a jaunt down the path away from the bike rentals, down the “runway,” in and around the bike trail loop, back down the runway toward the adult beach, a turn around, a second loop, and back toward the bike rental location for 3.1 miles.

The 5K run is not timed officially, though there is a large clock at the finish for runners to glance at as they cross the finish line, which was definitely a nice touch. Since the island is, in fact, located in the Bahamas, the temperature and humidity level might be higher than many guests are accustomed to, but since it is early enough in the morning, it is both manageable and enjoyable.

PROS: The Castaway Cay is open to walkers, joggers, and runners – seriously! The cruise staff are very friendly and encouraging of all cruisers who are interested in checking out the run, and all who complete the 3.1 miles will receive a special medal! Men’s and women’s shirts are also available for purchase at the nearby gift shop.

CONS: If you’re not used to running in high temperatures, it can be a challenging 3.1 miles. My recommendation is to take this run easy – there are no age-group awards or special incentives to gain from achieving a personal record, so enjoy!

One more con? Participants must be 12 years of age or older to participate, so be sure to plan ahead of your family situation requires.

As a runner always readying for my next event, I was delighted to get in my miles while cruising! It not only helped launch my days with a healthy dose of fun and energy, but running made me feel a little better about all the indulging I did aboard the ship. I think that if we had a longer itinerary I may have even run while visiting other ports of calls, which would be yet another category of running while cruising.

Castaway Cay – Guide to Disney’s Private Island

Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay is one of the most popular destinations for Disney cruises. This Disney private island in the Bahamas is used by Disney Cruise Line to offer guests plenty of fun activities to enjoy.

My family and I have had the opportunity to visit Disney’s private island in the Bahamas on several occasions, and it is full of fun activities and amazing beaches with crystal clear water. Whether you’re looking for excursions to enjoy, cabanas to rent, or beaches to lounge on, Castaway Cay has something for everyone!

In the post below, we will provide a full guide to Disney’s private island in the Bahamas: Castaway Cay. We’ll include a picture tour with a full guide on things to do on the island as well as Castaway Cay tips on how to make the most of your visit!

Disney Private Island Location

Before we get started discussing all the fun things to do on Castaway Cay, let’s discuss its location. Castaway Cay is a private island located near Great Abaco in the Bahamas. Formerly known as Gorda Cay, the island of Castaway Cay is actually leased by Disney, so they technically do not own the land.

Castaway Cay Map

Your stateroom host will place a map of Castaway Cay in your room the night before you arrive on the island. The map will look similar to the one below with labels for activities and dining options.

Map of Castaway Cay

Notice in the picture that the Disney Cruise ships are able to dock at Castaway Cay, so you can easily walk right off the ship. This brings me to an important point about your room location on the ship.

Best Views of Castaway Cay

If you book a stateroom with a verandah , you may have a preference as to which view of Castaway Cay you will see. The Disney ships usually reverse into Castaway Cay to dock.

Disney Cruise ship with text overlay Ultimate Guide to Castaway Cay in the Bahamas

This means that the verandahs on the starboard (aka right) side of the ship would have a view of the beaches. If your room is on the port (aka left) side of the ship, you would have a view of the dock and the undeveloped side of the island.

Although I find the starboard side more appealing, the port side view is still amazing. So, it’s not a deal breaker for us if we are unable to find a starboard side room when booking a Disney cruise.

Castaway Cay Pronunciation

Before you visit Disney’s private island, you may be wondering how you pronounce Castaway Cay. The pronunciation of Castaway Cay can be tricky as most first time cruisers sailing with Disney Cruise Line have read about the island but not heard its name spoken.

Castaway Cay Port Side

When speaking the name Castaway Cay, the word Cay is actually pronounced Key . So, the correct pronunciation for Castaway Cay is Castaway Key . Although this may seem difficult to remember at first, you will get used to hearing the name of the island on the cruise ship.

Weather for Castaway Cay in Bahamas

The weather at Castaway Cay tends to be pretty mild year round. Even though the summer months can get quite hot, you will find lots of shade and even a nice breeze on the island.

Castaway Cay Christmas Decorations

If you are visiting Castaway Cay in the winter, specifically December, January, and February, you may find the water a bit chilly. My kids never seem to mind the water temperature; though, and they get used to it rather quickly.

If your sail date is during the holiday season, you will notice Christmas decorations set up throughout the island. The picture above is from a Merrytime Cruise on the Disney Magic in December.

Castaway Cay 5k

Your cruise itinerary will state the all-ashore time for Castaway Cay. This is the earliest you are permitted to get off the ship. However, those taking part in the Castaway Cay 5k follow a different schedule.

Castaway Cay Entrance

If you signed up for the 5k in the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App , you would see a meeting time and location for those participating. When my husband ran the 5k, he had to meet in the theater the morning of the race at around 7:30 AM.

A Disney Cruise Line crew member will lead all the runners off the ship and to the starting line for the 5k. When the race is over, the runners can come back to the ship for breakfast, or they can go straight to an activity on the island.

Can you walk the 5k?

You are permitted to walk the 5k. However, there is a rule that strollers are NOT allowed. Also, children must be at least 10 years old to participate.

Things to Pack for Castaway Cay

If you are not participating in the 5k, the captain of the ship will make an announcement when you are able to disembark. The captain will also remind passengers to have ID’s and Key to the World cards on hand before getting off the ship.

Disney Ship Docked at Castaway Cay

We typically take a day bag off the ship with us to hold items we plan to use on the island. These are the things I usually pack in my bag:

  • Key to the World Cards
  • driver’s license
  • water shoes
  • refillable water bottles

Some things you DON’T need in your bag are:

  • towels (more info. below)
  • food (complimentary food is available on island)

I recommend eating breakfast at Cabanas or in one of the other dining venues before heading out to the island. Once you are ready to disembark, you head down to Deck 1, swipe your Key Cards, and walk onto the gangway to enter Castaway Cay.

Castaway Cay Beach Towels

We have never been stuck in a long line to get off the ship at Castaway Cay. I think people tend to disembark at their leisure after eating breakfast. Once you finally set foot on Castaway Cay, you will see towel stands where you can grab beach towels for your family.

Castaway Cay Towel Bin

When you return to the ship at the end of the day, DCL will provide bins for you to put your used towels in. There are also towel return bins in various spots throughout the island.

Castaway Cay Shuttle

Disney Cruise Line provides a shuttle to take you from the ship to various parts of the island. These trams are similar to the ones at Disney World that pick you up in the parking lot to take you to the gates at the theme parks.

Castaway Cay Shuttle

Even though the tram service is convenient, my family and I enjoy walking from the ship to the beach because it’s only a 15-minute stroll. It’s also really scenic! Below, I will include a picture tour of things you will see as you walk or ride by in the tram.

The walking paths are stroller friendly, so it’s easy to walk to the beach even if you have a baby or toddler. We tend to take our stroller off of the ship to use on the island. If you would rather grab a stroller or a wagon once on the island, you can do that too.

Castaway Cay Strollers

Near the family beaches, you will see an area with wagons, strollers, and beach accessible wheelchairs. These are free to borrow as needed.

Things to Do on Castaway Cay

As you enter the island, you will pass the Castaway Cay Post Office. If you mail a letter or postcard from the post office, it gets stamped with a special postmark. Near the post office, you will see some of the areas where port adventures take place.

Shore Excursions

After the post office, you will pass the harbor where you’ll see some of the charter boat rentals. Many excursions like parasailing and fishing meet in this area.

Castaway Cay Beach Activities

Before arriving at the first family beach, you will see another area for port adventures. This is where you will find equipment for snorkeling, kayaking, jet skiing, etc.

Climbing Feature

Although the excursions mentioned above cost extra for visitors to Castaway Cay, I will also provide some super fun options of activities that are included for free.

Castaway Cay Climbing Feature

I’m not totally sure what the playground pictured above is called, so I’m referring to it as the climbing feature . This is a kids-only climbing feature and that adults are not allowed to climb. You can stand in the water nearby to observe your kids playing though.

*Tip- The beach area in front of this climbing feature was never busy during our last visit. Even as the crowds started to grow, this area had tons of chairs and space available. So, this is a great place to find seats on Disney’s private island!

Pelican Plunge

Another fun water play area that is free to use is Pelican Plunge. This huge water playground sits just off the shore and has two separate water slides. Kids must be at least 38 inches tall to slide.

life jackets at Castaway Cay

Life vests are available near Pelican Plunge and are required for those who are under 48 inches tall. (Adults are allowed to slide as well.)

Pelican Plunge Castaway Cay

If you have a toddler who is too small to slide, there’s a little deck directly across from Pelican Plunge that is a great place to watch your family members on the water slides.

In-Da-Shade

If your kids want a break from the water activities, they can check out In-Da-Shade. This is a play area for kids that features games like basketball and ping pong.

Castaway Cay Beach Areas

When visiting Castaway Cay, the ultimate free activity is the beautiful beaches! Although a couple of the beaches are reserved for adults-only and cabana guests, you will find plenty of space for families to enjoy the clear water at Castaway Cay.

Castaway Family Beach

The first beach you will see near the Disney cruise ship sits right next to the snorkeling lagoon. Lots of loungers (some with umbrellas) and shorter beach chairs are available in this family beach area.

Family Beach Castaway Cay

There are also hammocks in this area. We have never had a problem finding chairs at Castaway Cay. Granted my kids wake up early, so we are often off the ship by 9:00.

However, we never rush to get down to the beach, and there have always been loungers, umbrellas, chairs, and hammocks available. My husband and I usually carry the short beach chairs to the edge of the water. This is where we sit as our kids play in the sand and ocean.

beach area Castaway Cay

When you walk into the water, you will notice it’s crystal clear and shallow.  There usually aren’t waves, so it’s a great spot even for toddlers. As it gets later in the morning, you will notice more people at the beach, but we never find it to be too crowded.

I will warn you that there tend to be small rocks and seashells present. You may want to pack some water shoes to protect your family’s feet while on the beach.

Castaway Cay Cabana Rentals

From Pelican Plunge, you can see the beach cabanas and private beach area. This section looked really neat on our last visit because it seemed to feature a giant sand bar.

Cabana Beach Castaway Cay

Kids were fairly far out in the lagoon, but the water was only ankle deep. Even though they are quite expensive to reserve, the cabanas usually sell out really quickly.

Platinum cruisers and those who are booked in Concierge staterooms tend to reserve all the cabanas since they are able to check-in much earlier than other cruisers.

Adult Beach

Serenity Bay is the adults-only beach on the island. Castaway Cay provides even more cabanas on this beach, which is at the far end of the island. If you want to experience Serenity Bay but are traveling with kids, you have the option of using Castaway Cay’s kids’ club, Scuttle’s Cove. (The clubs on the ship typically offer open house time on Castaway Cay day.)

Food on Castaway Cay

While on Castaway Cay, you can grab lunch from a buffet at either Cookie’s BBQ or Cookie’s BBQ Too. On our last visit to the island, Disney Cruise Line started serving lunch at 11:30.

↓↓ Visit My Etsy Shop ↓↓

Disney Cruise Planner

We arrived to Cookie’s BBQ around this time, and there were no lines or crowds. Cookie’s BBQ offered the following items at the buffet:

  • burgers
  • hot dogs
  • spicy chicken sandwiches
  • baked beans
  • coleslaw
  • fresh fruit
  • potato salad
  • corn on the cob
  • soft-serve ice cream
  • and probably a couple other items I am forgetting…but you get the idea (hopefully)!

Gluten Free

My husband has dietary restrictions and cannot eat gluten or meat. Our server took his Castaway Cay lunch order at dinner in the main dining room the night before. When we arrived at Cookie’s BBQ, my husband gave his name to one of the crew members at the buffet.

Then, they put his plate of food together based on his selections from the previous night. There are covered pavilions with picnic tables near Cookie’s BBQ. Castaway Cay actually offers a lot of shaded areas, which is nice when it’s super hot!

Shops and Bars

Once you walk past Cookie’s BBQ, you will see shops selling souvenirs and beach merchandise. There are also stands set up for things like hair braiding.

bar at castaway cay

We purchased goggles and sand toys from one of the shops because we forgot ours at home. If you have kids who like to build sandcastles, I recommend buying collapsible sand pails for the cruise (or for any beach trip). You can find the ones we use in our Disney Cruise packing list .

In addition to shops, you’ll see several beach shacks that serve drinks, smoothies, and snacks.

Things to Do with a Toddler on Castaway Cay

If you have a toddler in tow while cruising with Disney , Castaway Cay has plenty of activities for younger kids. In addition to the toddler friendly beaches, my two-year-old loved the splash zone called Spring-A-Leak. This is a well-shaded area tucked away near the bike rentals.

splash pad castaway cay

You will also find Disney characters on the island with fairly short lines for meet and greets. In addition, Castaway Cay provides lots of fun scenery for toddlers.

I usually end up taking my toddler back to the ship early in the afternoon on Castaway Cay days. The ship is nearly empty during this time, so it gives her a chance to play in the splash pad area and kids’ club without crowds.

Castaway Cay Tips

If you are looking for some tips and tricks to make your day at Castaway Cay run smoothly, here are my top suggestions:

  • Prepare a day bag the night before.
  • Eat a large breakfast onboard.
  • Apply sunscreen before you disembark.
  • Don’t forget your Key to the World Card and ID’s.
  • Use a stroller.
  • Grab a towel on the island.
  • Walk instead of taking the tram.
  • Sit by the climbing feature for less crowds.
  • Pack water shoes to protect from rocks and sea shells.
  • Take time to explore the island.
  • Go back to the ship early for short water slide lines onboard.
  • Try to relax and take it all in!

Final Review of Disney’s Castaway Cay Bahamas

Disney’s Castaway Cay is most definitely the prettiest place I’ve ever been. It’s so clean and organized, and it offers lots of fun things to do with your family. Not to mention the crystal clear, calm water that makes you truly feel like you’re in paradise.

If your Disney Cruise Line vacation includes a stop at this gorgeous private island in the Bahamas, you can look forward to all the fun activities and entertainment options included.

You and your family are sure to enjoy this magical experience in paradise!

Details About the Elusive $5,000 Star Wars Drink on the Disney Wish

By Kelly Oliveros 13 Comments

Going on a Disney Cruise can be expensive enough as it is , but if you want to unlock an incredibly special experience while on Disney’s newest ship ( The Disney Wish ) you’ll need to get ready to shell out some serious cash!

cruise ship 5k

Hyperspace Lounge

We’ve made our way around the Disney Wish , explored the staterooms , ate at the restaurants , and (of course) we took you along for the ride. One other spot we got the chance to see is the special Star Wars Hyperspace Lounge aboard the ship. We’ve checked out some of the details here already, but now we’ve got some news about an extra special experience you can ONLY unlock here!

Scott Gustin and Ashley Carter shared some initial information about a PRICEY drink available at the Hyperspace Lounge that comes with some special perks. Since that time, WDW Radio also shared some information about the drink after Beci Mahnken from Mouse Fan Travel actually ordered it. This post has been updated to reflect all current details from both sources.

The drink is called the Kaiburr Crystal and it costs a whopping $5,000!  😮  Yes, you read that right. $5K!! Wel, in reality, Mahnken pointed out that there is an automatic 18% gratuity added, making it $900 more expensive. But it includes more than just 1 drink.

cruise ship 5k

©WDW Radio | Beci Mahnken

The $5k drink actually includes 4 drinks and comes with 4 cups.

We’ll start with how the drink is served!  It comes served in a Camtono , a special item that  Star Wars fans will recognize. It’s got a bit of a cult following due to its inclusion in one of the original trilogy films. But since its first appearance, it has become a more “official” part of Star Wars and has been utilized to hold credits and metals like Beskar.

cruise ship 5k

This is What the Camtono Looks Like!

During Star Wars Celebration, they actually revealed that a Camtono drink delivery system could be utilized on the Wish , and now that has become a reality for this very special drink! Sadly though, the Camtono isn’t something you get to take home.

cruise ship 5k

No Camtono to Keep

According to Mahnken, you actually need to put in a code to open up the Camtono container and access the drinks within!

The cocktail (in the big cup in the center) is called the Barc Speeder and is made with Camus Cognac 4.160, Yuzu and Kumquat, and Grand Marnier Quintessence.

cruise ship 5k

There are 3 shots served individually in the other little cups — Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve 23 Year Bourbon, Taylor Fladgate Very Old Tawny Port (Kingsman Edition), and Watenshi Gin.

Some of these drinks come from bottles that sell for thousands of dollars, are rare, or otherwise are extremely special. So you’re not just getting any old drink here!

The most expensive drink in the galaxy. The Star Wars Hyperspace Lounge on the Disney Wish has a $5,000 Kaiburr Crystal drink. pic.twitter.com/ZcUp3yt0RI — Ashley Carter (@AshleyLCarter1) June 29, 2022

The cups are silver plated and you do get to keep all 4 . Mahnken shares that they are Christofle BeeBee silver plated cups . If you search for prices for similar cups from this brand online, you’ll see that they carry a HEFTY price tag. The cups will actually be shipped to you so there’s no need to worry about stuffing them in your bag.

cruise ship 5k

©Christofle

The drink experience also comes with a photo with the 2 officers from the cruise line that come to present the drink to you.

And if you pay for this drink, you’ll also get a Star Wars backpack, water bottle, and other Star Wars -themed gifts.

cruise ship 5k

But wait…there’s MORE! You’ll also get a bottle of sparkling wine from Skywalker Ranch AND a voucher for 4 people to visit Skywalker Ranch!  Previously, it had been reported that the voucher was only for 1 person to visit Skywalker Ranch. That was corrected by Mahnken when she ordered the drink.

If you’re unfamiliar with it, Skywalker Ranch is about 40 minutes north of San Francisco, California. It’s known as the home of Lucasfilm’s sound design facility. There’s a technical building occupied by Skywalker Sound, a main house, and a lake appropriately called Lake Ewok.

Considering the fact that Skywalker Ranch isn’t typically a place the general public can visit, this is a pretty epic perk to score.

cruise ship 5k

Also included in the $5k drink experience is a special escort off of the Disney Wish cruise ship. According to Mahnken, the staff from Hyperspace Lounge are the ones that actually escort you off the gangway. She points out that this can be beneficial if there’s a long line of people getting off the ship!

cruise ship 5k

“Otherwordly concoctions” are served here!

So while $5k is a LOT for an experience, it does include more than just a single drink. It actually includes quite a few things that  Star Wars fans might be interested in and intrigued by — particularly that trip to Skywalker Ranch.

What do you think? Would you drop $5k for this drink experience package? Or would you save it to use toward another cruise, a Disney World trip, or something else? Tell us in the comments!

While I wouldn’t buy this experience, I don’t have THAT much money to waste, once I heard of some of the ingredients, I’m not surprised at the price. I already knew about Pappy van Winkle and Watenshi, and that they run a couple of thousand dollars per bottle; and a little research on the Taylor’s Kingsmen edition shows that it’s in the same range. Standard restaurant/bar markup would take a single shot of each to nearly a thousand. The further perqs of the experience could be worth the price… IF… again… IF you have that much money to waste.

Another Disney way to see how far their greed will take them. We as consumers and logical human beings need to put a stop to this madness. We need to ban together and stop spending crazy amounts of money on the crap they dish out. Disney is not what it used to be and is now only for the rich & famous. Glad I got to see it before that new greedy CEO took over who makes 10s of millions of dollars a year plus bonuses. Never going again or renewing my annual pass or spending a dime at DisneyWorld. He has ruined the magic. Most Disney employees I’ve talk too hate this guy too. Get rid of the greedy bob chepik or whatever his name is. Disney prices have gone through roof since this greedy jerk took over before COVID. I’ve seen kids & families who will never experience the magic and feel sorry. Even if you r wealthy enough to get to visit, it’s not the same and frankly not worth it anymore. When you’ve experienced the way it used to b and how it is now, it’s just not worth the money. And the weather really has made it even worse. It’s so hot now that you can only enjoy going during winter months Jan Feb March too.

I think we’re missing the point of Walt Disney’s dream in offering a 5G drink experience on a Cruise Ship named “The Wish””! Walt’s wish was to create a place where all families could enjoy!! If I had 5G’s to buy an experience, I would much rather donate to a deserving family so that they could enjoy an experience that Walt Disney intended his wish to be!!

Yes, I would buy that. It’s a fun experience and the perks are very nice.

We got the drink in July. We had an absurd amount of cruise credit from past cruises getting canceled so we decided to spend it on that. We didn’t get to keep the silver cups. They had us poor the one drink into another glass before we could leave with it.

HELL NO – No drink in the world is worth $5,000 ! Just another DISNEY GIMICK TO GET ALL OF YOUR MONEY. If Bob Iger does not hit the REWIND BUTTON and bring back the WDW Magic … I will be forever done with Disney and their greedy ways ! IT IS SAD THAT THEY ONLY WANT THE RICHEST OF THE RICH TO EXPERIENCE THEIR PARKS AND CRUISES. I wish the Disney family had retained 100% ownership of the company …. I bet Disney would be way different than it is now ! Next, they will offer a $10,000 meal !

Castaway Cay 5k on Disney Cruise Line

Castaway Cay 5k on Disney Cruise Line

Most sailings going to the Caribbean on a Disney Cruise Line vacation will stop at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay .  We love the beauty and tranquility of this island, and there is plenty to do! Whether you want to take an excursion while visiting Castaway Cay, or just relax, it’s a favorite stop for many guests on Disney Cruise Line. And if you’re looking for something free to do while there, the Castaway Cay 5k is something fun for the whole family!

Castaway Cay 5k

The Castaway Cay 5K used to be an organized 5K run through Castaway Cay. Before the pandemic, it was set up like a regular race. The race itself was free, but it still required a few things. Guests would have to sign up prior and be ready to disembark the ship at 8am. Since Disney Cruise Line began operating again after the shutdown from covid, things have changed. The Castaway Cay 5K is one of those things. Now, anyone can do the Castaway Cay 5K at any time while they are docked at Castaway Cay.

It is self-paced, so you can walk it or run it. We saw lots of families completing this activity together. And some people were even completing the 5k in their swimsuits and flip flops so you can also do that as well. Although if you choose that route, make sure you bring a good sunscreen ! Many of the areas are not shaded and the sun can get quite hot unless you are choosing to complete this super early.  And just a reminder, a 5k is 3.1 miles.  So just be sure to wear shoes that you can stand to be in for that long.

Our 4-night cruise on the Disney Wish had been extended to a 6-night cruise due to Hurricane Ian and we had been at sea for several days, so by the time we reached the island we were ready to spend some time walking in the sunshine! And it was the perfect way to work up an appetite before lunch at Cookies Too before the sun got too hot.

Castaway Cay 5k

Where does the Castaway Cay 5k go?

The Castaway Cay 5k takes you through paved paths around the island! If you’ve ever rented bicycles at Castaway Cay, they basically use the same paths. There are signs all over directing you to the route as well as water stations for your convenience. You’ll find lots of hidden treasures throughout the paths, and the route also leads you past the adult only beach, Serenity Bay .

There are areas of shade and areas of harsh sun, so plan accordingly.  There are also little benches along the pathway, so if you feel like you need to take breaks, you can do this too!

Castaway Cay 5k

How to sign up for the Castaway Cay 5k

You don’t need to sign up for the Castaway Cay 5k! You just start it on your own and finish it on your own.

Castaway Cay 5k

How long does it take to complete the Castaway Cay 5k?

That’s really up to you! A 5k is 3.1 miles, so it really depends on your pace. If you’re running it, it’s easy to complete it in 30 minutes or less. If you’re walking it, you can expect anywhere from a little less than an hour to a little more than an hour. And if you’re planning to make this a family event and include little ones, I would recommend allowing yourself closer to an hour and a half. You can even push your kiddos in a stroller for this 5k so feel free to do that as well! There is no time limit, except

What is the prize for completing the Castaway Cay 5k?

Castaway Cay 5k participants will receive a medal for their efforts. This is a super fun little souvenir and even better, it’s free! A lot of people like to wear their medals around the island after completing the 5k to show off their accomplishments. Or you can always just put it in your bag to bring back home with you later.  We love runDisney medals , so we were excited to be able to add this one to our collections!

Castaway Cay 5k

How to get your medal for the Castaway Cay 5k?

After you’ve completed your 5k, just head to the bicycle rental booth. Let them know you’ve finished the 5k and they will give you your medal.  No need to show proof or anything as this is done on the honor system. But we had fun seeing how we did with our pace!

Best time of day to Castaway Cay 5k

It can get very hot at Castaway Cay! The best time of day to complete this course will depend on the time of year you are visiting. But generally, before the sun reaches its peak will be the most comfortable. During cooler months, like January and February, you may be able to do this any time. But most of the time, the ship departs Castaway Cay by 5, so you’ll probably want to plan this earlier in the day. We finished our course around 11:30am, and it was starting to get quite hot at that point. So just try to plan ahead!

The Castaway Cay 5k is a fun, free, self-paced activity that anyone can participate in while on Disney’s private island. If you have the time, want to get some extra steps in, or even just want to take a nice stroll to appreciate the beauty of Castaway Cay, this is a great way to spend a little time here!

All about the 5K Race on Disney's Castaway Cay for rundisney Fans to earn your very own Disney medal!

Expedition cruises: The ultimate guide to cruising to remote, hard-to-reach places

Gene Sloan

One of the fastest-growing segments of cruising in recent years has been "expedition cruising," a type of cruising that involves traveling to remote, hard-to-reach places such as Antarctica on small, hardy vessels.

This is a type of cruising so different from what the big mass-market lines offer that it might as well be considered an entirely different form of travel.

With traditional cruising, the experience often revolves heavily around shipboard activities, dining, drinking and entertainment. Yes, a traditional cruise is partly about getting you to (mostly mainstream) destinations for brief visits. But at its core, it's a resort experience.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

An expedition cruise, by contrast, isn't designed to be a resort experience. It's a cruise that is all about getting you to an off-the-beaten-path place that, in many cases, has little or no land-based infrastructure and can be reached no other way but by ship. You are "cruising" in the sense that you are traveling by ship. But the trip isn't about the ship. It's about where the ship can get you.

cruise ship 5k

As I've been lucky enough to experience many times over nearly three decades of writing about cruising, expedition cruises can get you to some of the least visited and most wondrous places in the world — including parts of the Arctic and Antarctica that as recently as a century ago had never been seen by humans.

Here is a guide to everything you need to know about expedition cruises and cruising.

What is an expedition cruise?

Expedition cruises are ship-based trips designed to get you to remote and hard-to-reach places that most people never get to see.

It is travel by ship to places so far off the beaten path, such as Antarctica, that the journey itself is a bit of an adventure. Adding to the adventure is that, in some cases, you don't know what you're going to do from day to day once you reach your destination. Your expedition leader will make the call depending on the movement of wildlife, changing ice conditions (if you're in a polar region) and the waves and the weather around possible landing sites.

Should whales pop up off your bow on an expedition cruise to Antarctica, for instance, your expedition leader might decide to scrap morning plans for a landing near a penguin colony in favor of whale watching. Then you'll visit penguins in the afternoon. Or not.

Maybe changing ice conditions will make it possible to do a landing on floating ice for a hike. Eventually, you'll probably make multiple landings at penguin colonies, maybe hike across floating ice and hopefully see whales and other wildlife. But how it all happens will be at the whims of nature.

In that sense, being on an expedition cruise is a bit like being part of a team of explorers on an "expedition" — hence the name.

As vacations go, expedition cruises have more in common with safari vacations in Africa or trekking trips in the Peruvian Andes than traditional cruises.

cruise ship 5k

On an expedition cruise, the focus is on remote wilderness areas and the wildlife that inhabits them. This could be Antarctica's rocky, ice-lined shoreline, with its massive penguin colonies, or the uninhabited islands of the Galapagos, with their giant tortoises and Darwin's finches.

What is an expedition cruise ship like?

The typical expedition cruise vessel is custom-built for these remote and rugged areas. Expedition ships typically are small and agile, so they can tuck into remote bays and waterways that big ships can't reach.

And they're inordinately tough. Expedition ships are typically built with strengthened hulls to allow them to bump through ice in polar regions and with unusually large fuel tanks and food storage areas to allow them to operate long periods in remote areas without re-provisioning (in some cases, as long as 40 days).

In addition, expedition cruise ships travel with their own landing craft — typically small rubber Zodiac boats — to get passengers ashore in remote areas. Expedition ships also often carry other adventure gear for exploring in remote areas, including kayaks, paddleboards, snowshoes, snorkeling equipment, wetsuits and sometimes diving equipment.

A handful of expedition cruise ships even travel with submarines for underwater exploration and helicopters.

Expedition ships also will have "mud rooms" where you will find cubbies to store your outdoor clothing and gear. Many expedition cruise ships will have waterproof rubber boots for you to borrow — either for free or for an extra charge — that you will need for "wet landings" on beaches by Zodiac boats. They'll be stored in the mud room, as well.

cruise ship 5k

Instead of a cruise director and the other entertainment staff found on traditional cruise ships, you'll typically be accompanied on expedition cruises by an "expedition team." The group is made up of expedition leaders with deep knowledge of the destination along with scientific experts such as biologists, geologists and ornithologists, and often a historian, who will lead landings and lecture on board.

Many expedition ships also sail with a photography expert. One well-known expedition cruise company, Lindblad Expeditions, staffs many of its ships with National Geographic photographers who will teach you how to use your own cameras to capture the scenery and wildlife you're experiencing.

In short, expedition cruises are designed for exploring and learning. Unlike most traditional cruises, an expedition cruise is not meant to be a resort experience, though an increasing number of expedition ships are being outfitted with more upscale amenities than in the past.

These luxury touches include a greater variety of dining venues, including high-end restaurants, as well as elegant bars and onboard spas. However, these amenities will play second fiddle to the off-the-ship adventures at the core of the experience.

How small are expedition cruise ships?

Historically, expedition ships have carried no more than 200 passengers — a manageable number for an exploration-focused vessel operating in a remote location such as Antarctica. But a growing number of expedition ships carry more. Viking designed its new expedition ships to carry 378 passengers. Some new Hurtigruten expedition vessels are designed for around 500 people.

Even these bigger vessels are far smaller than traditional, resortlike cruise ships, which often can carry 3,000 passengers or more (with some capable of carrying nearly 7,000 passengers).

Note that by international agreement, some remote places that expedition ships visit, including Antarctica and parts of the Arctic, have limits on how many passengers can land from an expedition cruise vessel at any given time — an agreement designed to protect wildlife and historical structures from the impacts of large group visits.

In some places, such as Antarctica, the limit is broadly set at 100 people, with some sensitive landing spots having even tighter restrictions. As a result, expedition ships that carry more than 100 people only can land a portion of their passengers in a destination such as Antarctica at once.

If you're on such a vessel, you'll have to wait your turn to go ashore and might miss out if changing weather forces the ship to reposition. This is one reason travelers who want the most in-depth expedition cruise experience should choose a small ship with relatively few passengers.

cruise ship 5k

I prefer expedition ships that carry in the vicinity of 100 people for this reason. I also look for vessels that are built for toughness, as they can access more remote and hard-to-reach places than less-tough-built vessels.

How tough are expedition ships?

When sailing in polar regions, you'll want to look at a ship's polar-class rating to gauge its toughness. There are seven polar classes, from PC1 (which stands for polar class 1) to PC7 (polar class 7). PC1 is the highest polar-class rating, meaning the ship can go anywhere in polar regions year-round. At this level, the ship is a true icebreaker that can crunch through all sorts of floating ice (and, as you'll learn on an expedition cruise to a polar region, there are many types of floating ice).

There currently are no passenger vessels with a PC1 rating, though a new Ponant icebreaker called Le Commandant Charcot has an almost-as-high PC2 rating. With such a rating, the 245-passenger ship is cleared to crunch through ice all the way to the North Pole, which it sometimes does .

cruise ship 5k

Most expedition cruise ships are rated PC5 or PC6, which means they can operate in medium first-year ice (ice that is only a year old and not outrageously thick) with some older ice inclusions. But they're not designed to go to a place like the North Pole.

A ship rated PC7 is only designed to sail through thin first-year ice, and ships without polar-class ratings should steer clear of icy areas. This is one reason you don't see a lot of big, mass-market cruise ships heading down to Antarctica or up to the Arctic — at least not in particularly icy areas. These ships generally don't have polar-class ratings.

Where can I go on an expedition cruise?

You'll find expedition cruises to remote places all over the world. But two destinations account for a disproportionately large portion of all expedition cruises: Antarctica and the Arctic.

This is not by coincidence. Antarctica and large portions of the Arctic are tough to reach any other way than by expedition ship. They are the last two places in the world with large uninhabited areas without infrastructure for tourism.

Many expedition cruise ships will spend nearly all their time in either Antarctica or the Arctic, oscillating between the two destinations based on the changing seasons. They will explore the Arctic from June to September, when the weather is warmest in the region, before repositioning to Antarctica for the months of November to March, when the weather there is warmest.

Related: The best cruise destinations for every type of traveler

That leaves just a few months when the ships move between the Arctic and Antarctica. Sometimes, they'll sail empty between the two regions. Other times, they'll offer a handful of one-off voyages while in transit.

Other destinations known for expedition cruising include the Galapagos, the Amazon River, the coasts of Costa Rica and Panama, Mexico's Sea of Cortez and Alaska.

Take a look at some of the key expedition cruise destinations:

cruise ship 5k

In many ways, Antarctica is the ultimate expedition cruise destination. It's a place that is almost impossible to reach other than by expedition cruise ship, and getting to it by expedition ship is a true adventure that merits being called an expedition.

It's also one of the most spectacularly scenic places you will ever see, with wildlife found nowhere else. Getting to experience Antarctica on an expedition cruise — something I've done several times and hope to do again — is a true trip of a lifetime.

Antarctica trips typically start in Ushuaia, Argentina, or Punta Arenas, Chile — the southernmost settlements in South America. From there, your ship will make a two-day crossing of the Drake Passage — the notoriously rough waterway between South America and Antarctica — before spending five or six days exploring the icy coast of the continent. A return trip across the Drake comes at the end.

Some longer Antarctica itineraries add in visits to South Georgia Island and the Falkland Islands on the way to or from Antarctica.

Alternatively, a handful of tour companies operate so-called fly-cruise trips to Antarctica that use hardy airplanes to fly tourists directly to the continent from Punta Arenas — no sailing across the Drake required. On such trips, travelers still explore the coast of Antarctica by cruise vessel. But they don't board the vessel that will take them exploring until after they land on the continent.

As I've written about before, there are pros and cons of both types of Antarctica trips .

Related: Skip the Drake: What it's like flying to Antarctica on a chartered plane

A few cruise vessels sail to Antarctica from Australia and New Zealand, though this is less common.

cruise ship 5k

Once in Antarctica, you'll land by Zodiac boats to visit penguin colonies and hike through the snow to the remnants of early explorer huts, sail through ice-filled fjords, and (if you're lucky) watch whales during Zodiac boat outings. All around you will be soaring mountains, glaciers and floating icebergs.

cruise ship 5k

The Arctic is the second great destination for expedition cruising — and, for me, it's a toss-up as to which polar region I find more mesmerizing.

Like Antarctica, it's a land of ice and icebergs and snow, and often spectacular wildlife on display, as well as historical sites related to early explorers. It also has a cultural element that you won't find in Antarctica, as some land areas in the Arctic are home to Indigenous peoples such as the Inuit, who have occupied the areas for hundreds of years, if not longer.

On some Canadian Arctic itineraries, for instance, expedition ships will stop at one or more of the Inuit settlements that dot the region. Sometimes an Inuit guide will be along for the voyage to talk about Inuit culture and life.

The Arctic offers a far more diverse array of expedition cruise itineraries than Antarctica. You'll find sailings that typically focus on just one but occasionally more of the following Arctic destinations:

  • The Canadian Arctic, including the Northwest Passage
  • The North Pole

Until recently, a handful of expedition cruise companies also operated sailings to remote parts of the Russian Arctic, including the ice-covered islands of Franz Josef Land and polar bear hot spot Wrangel Island. A few expedition cruise vessels even have made a complete crossing of the so-called Northeast Passage — the 4,000-mile-long, ice-clogged route across the Russian Arctic that connects Western Europe to the Americas.

Related: 8 things to know about cruising to the Arctic

The latter trips have included stops in remote places that had never been seen by humans until the 20th century, and such voyages have been relatively rare. In 2018, I took part in just the fourth expedition cruise across the Northeast Passage by a Western cruise vessel — a monthlong trip that included many days where we never saw signs of civilization. Additional vessels operated by Russian companies also have made the journey with travelers over the years.

All such trips in the Russian Arctic have been canceled since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and it's unclear if and when they might resume.

cruise ship 5k

While there are commonalities to the expedition cruises offered in all the Arctic regions (you'll see ice, for instance, and probably a polar bear, no matter which one you choose), each region of the Arctic is a little different.

If I had to choose just one Arctic cruise (and this is a question I get a lot from would-be Arctic cruisers), I probably would pick a sailing around Svalbard. Located between the top of mainland Norway and the North Pole, it's a relatively compact archipelago where you can get a taste of many of the Arctic's allures in a relatively short time. You'll see ice-carved mountains and glaciers, as well as polar bears, reindeer, Arctic foxes and massive bird colonies.

Related: I didn't think I'd like an Arctic cruise — here's why I was wrong

That said, an expedition cruise down the west coast of Greenland would be a close contender. I'm not sure I've ever seen anything as stunning as the Ilulissat Icefjord and the huge icebergs that spill out of it into Disko Bay. Put that place on your bucket list. You will not regret it.

The Galapagos

cruise ship 5k

The wildlife-filled Galapagos, where most islands are uninhabited, is another classic expedition cruise market — one with an expedition vessel ecosystem all its own, thanks to unusual local regulations.

By law, only vessels based year-round in the Galapagos can offer expedition sailings in the islands. As a result, expedition ships that sail in other parts of the world can't operate in the Galapagos, and the ships that do operate there are unique to the destination.

In addition, vessels that operate in the Galapagos can't hold more than 100 passengers. That means that most Galapagos-based expedition vessels are small. Many hold just 16 to 48 passengers.

Cruise companies that have expedition vessels based in the Galapagos include Hurtigruten Expeditions, Lindblad Expeditions, Silversea Cruises and Celebrity Cruises . The latter is a big-ship line that, a bit incongruously, also owns a Galapagos cruise operation using vessels a small fraction of the size of the rest of its ships.

cruise ship 5k

Other cruise companies and tour operators that offer expedition cruises in the Galapagos, typically using chartered vessels, include Avalon Waterways and Abercrombie & Kent. Note that it's not uncommon for more than one travel company or cruise brand to sell sailings on the same ship in the Galapagos.

The Galapagos comprises 19 larger islands, all but four uninhabited, and the typical weeklong Galapagos cruise includes stops at just five or six of them. That said, many lines offer back-to-back itineraries that include stops at different islands, allowing you to create a longer sailing that is more diverse in its stops.

Cruise lines will generally break the islands into north, south, east and west loops. However, some lines offer inner, outer and central loops. Others feature a combination. The best way to choose among them is to decide which islands you'd most like to visit.

cruise ship 5k

Several expedition cruise companies and adventure tour companies offer expedition-style sailings up the Amazon River, particularly in the portion located in Peru. These trips are generally operated by tiny vessels that remain on the river year-round.

Among the companies known for Amazon sailings is Aqua Expeditions, which operates two small vessels on the Amazon out of Iquitos, Peru — the 32-passenger Aria Amazon and the 40-passenger Aqua Nera.

The vessels travel along the Maranon River, the Amazon's largest tributary, as well as other neighboring rivers (the Yarapa and Yanayacu-Pucate) in search of such local wildlife as three-toed sloths, toucans, macaws, taricaya turtles and the Amazon's elusive pink dolphins.

Most Amazon voyages also include stops at small villages along the riverways, though the focus is on wildlife watching from the river.

Other companies offering similar trips include Exodus Travels, Lindblad Expeditions, Pandaw and Delfin Amazon Cruises.

cruise ship 5k

When imagining an Alaska cruise, most people think of the many sailings offered by big-ship lines such as Princess Cruises and Holland America — traditional cruise voyages that focus on Southeast Alaska's main tourist towns of Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan. But Alaska also is the stomping ground of a handful of expedition cruise operators — most notably UnCruise Adventures and Lindblad Expeditions — that offer expedition cruises into the wilderness areas of Southeast Alaska. On these trips, the focus is not on the region's towns but on its scenic wild lands and wildlife.

Both UnCruise and Lindblad operate small expedition ships in Alaska that mostly carry fewer than 100 passengers (even the biggest UnCruise vessel in Alaska carries just 82 people) and have Zodiac boats for landings as well as kayaks, paddleboards and other adventure equipment.

The ships essentially serve as a floating adventure platform to get you into the most remote areas.

A typical seven-night Alaska expedition cruise might include whale watching in Frederick Sound; a visit to Dawes Glacier and ice-filled Endicott Arm; landings in Tongass National Forest for hiking as well as kayaking, paddleboarding and Zodiac boat touring; and boat-based searching for bears, Sitka deer, sea lions, eagles, mink, porpoises and mountain goats.

The trips often begin and end in one of Southeast Alaska's small towns, such as Juneau or Sitka.

One other small cruise company, American Queen Voyages, operates a 186-passenger expedition ship in Southeast Alaska that combines wilderness experiences with more traditional cruise-type stops at the area's towns. Every sailing includes a visit to Ketchikan, Petersburg and Wrangell, as well as outdoorsy pursuits, making it a hybrid of a traditional sailing and an expedition cruise.

Related: The pros and cons of small-ship cruising in Alaska

Alaskan-owned Alaskan Dream Cruises offers small-ship, expedition-style voyages that combine wilderness experiences with at least one and sometimes several stops at small Southeast Alaska settlements such as Pelican, Kasaan, Wrangell, Petersburg and Kake.

Which cruise companies offer expedition cruises?

Most of the big cruise brands that offer traditional cruises (think Royal Caribbean or Norwegian Cruise Line ) don't own expedition ships or offer expedition cruises. Instead, for the most part, specialized expedition cruise companies have emerged over the past few decades that do nothing but expedition cruises.

That's not always the case. Traditional luxury cruise operator Silversea Cruises , for instance, in 2008 began building up a separate expedition cruise division that has become a major player in expedition cruises. In just the last two years, traditional cruise brands Viking and Seabourn also have gotten into expedition cruising with new, specialized expedition ships.

cruise ship 5k

In addition, luxury river cruise specialist Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours recently unveiled its first two expedition ships.

Indeed, a move by traditional cruise operators to add expedition cruises to their offerings is one of the big trends in cruising right now.

Still, many of the best-known brands in expedition cruises aren't companies you would know if all you know is traditional cruising.

The biggest and most notable players in the expedition cruising space as of 2023 include:

  • Adventure Canada
  • Antarctica21 (only in Antarctica)
  • Aqua Expeditions
  • Atlas Ocean Voyages
  • Aurora Expeditions
  • Celebrity Cruises (only in the Galapagos)
  • Lindblad Expeditions
  • Hurtigruten Expeditions
  • Hapag-Lloyd Cruises
  • Heritage Expeditions
  • Ponant Cruises
  • Quark Expeditions
  • Scenic Luxury Cruises
  • Silversea Cruises
  • Swan Hellenic
  • Oceanwide Expeditions
  • Poseidon Expeditions
  • UnCruise Adventures

In addition, many well-known tour companies such as Abercrombie & Kent and Overseas Adventure Travel market expedition trips on vessels chartered in whole or in part from other companies. Abercrombie & Kent, for instance, operates trips to polar regions on vessels chartered from Ponant.

Among the companies with the longest track records in offering expedition cruises to remote places are Lindblad Expeditions and Hurtigruten Expeditions.

Lindblad Expeditions was founded in 1979 by Sven-Olof Lindblad, whose father, Lars-Eric Lindblad, led the first expedition trips to Antarctica (in 1966) and the Galapagos (in 1967). Lindblad Expeditions later pioneered expedition cruise voyages to places like Baja California and parts of the Arctic.

Lindblad Expeditions currently offers more than 100 expedition cruise itineraries across all seven continents.

cruise ship 5k

In recent years, Lindblad Expeditions has partnered with National Geographic and has renamed its ships to include National Geographic in their monikers. For instance, one of Lindblad's premier vessels sailing in polar regions is called National Geographic Resolution. If you hear someone say they did an expedition cruise with National Geographic, they probably mean Lindblad Expeditions.

Related: Why Lindblad's new ship may be the ultimate polar exploration vessel

Hurtigruten Expeditions, a Norway-based company that caters to an international clientele, traces its roots to a cruise service from Norway to Svalbard in the Arctic that started in 1896. The company likes to say this early entry into cruising to a remote place makes it the founder of expedition cruising. It also bills itself as the world's largest expedition cruise line.

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, a German company that caters heavily to Germans but draws some English speakers, also was a pioneer in expedition cruising, operating some of the first voyages in parts of the Arctic. The first four voyages by a Western cruise vessel through the Northeast Passage, including the one that I did in 2018, for instance, were on Hapag-Lloyd Cruises expedition ships. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises also did some of the first sailings across the Northwest Passage — the fabled routing across the Canadian Arctic.

Some of the brands mentioned above, including Lindblad, Silversea and Ponant, offer expedition cruises in a wide range of destinations. Others are more focused.

UnCruise Adventures, for instance, is a specialist in adventurous, outdoorsy, ship-based trips in remote parts of Alaska, although it also offers expedition cruises in the Sea of Cortez and other parts of Central America. It also offers Hawaii cruises that combine outdoorsy pursuits with a cultural-focused visit to the island of Molokai and a day in the town of Lahaina on the island of Maui.

Expedition cruise operator Antarctica21 only operates voyages in and around — you guessed it — Antarctica.

How long are expedition cruises?

As with traditional cruises, there is a wide range of lengths for expedition cruises. For trips to remote places such as Antarctica and parts of the Arctic, even the shortest trips available can be 10 days. Some itineraries extend to two weeks or more.

If you're planning a trip to Antarctica, note that just getting to the starting points for such trips in Ushuaia, Argentina, or Punta Arenas, Chile, from the United States (assuming that's your home) can take two full days — longer if, like many Antarctica-bound travelers, you add in a stop in Buenos Aires, Argentina, or Santiago, Chile, on the way. (Pro tip: You may want to do just that to break up a grueling transit.)

As a result, even the shortest vacations to Antarctica from the United States are usually two-week-long affairs. If you pick a sailing that includes a stop at South Georgia Island and the Falkland Islands, you're looking at a minimum of three weeks away from home.

Related: The ultimate guide to picking the right cruise line for you

Expedition cruises in the Arctic also can stretch into multiple weeks. If you're short on time, as noted above, your best bet is a sailing around Svalbard, which can be done in a week plus travel time to reach the archipelago.

You can find some expedition cruises in the Galapagos that are shorter than a week. But as with Antarctica, it's a destination that takes a long time to reach. The typical U.S. traveler heading to the Galapagos will fly first to Quito, Ecuador, and spend at least a night there, maybe several, before continuing to the Galapagos. After all that travel, you might want to make the most of it and stay in the islands longer.

Expedition cruises in the Peruvian Amazon typically are short — sometimes just three days long. But they're often paired with other touring to create longer South America trips.

How much do expedition cruises cost?

Expedition cruises can be expensive, with pricing on par with traditional luxury cruises. It's not unusual to see expedition cruises to Antarctica and the Arctic priced at $1,000 per person per day — or more. Add in flights to reach the starting points for such trips, pre- and post-cruise hotel stays and other extra costs, and you could pay $15,000 or more per person for such trips.

If that seems high, remember that expedition ships are specialized vessels that are expensive to build on a per-berth basis (particularly those with polar-class ratings). They also require a relatively high ratio of staff to passengers to operate compared with mass-market cruise ships.

In short, expedition cruise companies face a high cost on a per-berth basis to operate their vessels — and those costs will be reflected in the cruise fares.

Can anyone do an expedition cruise?

Travelers with mobility issues may find it difficult to get the most out of expedition cruises, as the trips are relatively active.

By definition, expedition cruises involve visiting remote places with little or no infrastructure for tourists, and the lack of infrastructure extends to a lack of docks and tender boat services that would allow a passenger with mobility issues to get on and off the vessel. In addition, once you land at an expedition cruise destination, you will often be moving over uneven terrain.

In many cases, touring from an expedition ship starts with stepping off the side of the vessel onto a small, open-to-the-air rubber Zodiac boat bobbing in the waves and then being driven by a guide in that small vessel a considerable distance to the shore, sometimes in choppy seas. Once at the shore, passengers often must climb over the side of the boat into ankle-deep or deeper water and wade ashore in what is known as a "wet landing."

Touring from there can involve hiking over rocky areas, snowfields and ice in search of wildlife.

cruise ship 5k

If all of the above sounds like something you wouldn't enjoy doing, you might want to skip an expedition cruise and focus on more traditional cruises instead.

That said, I've seen many travelers with mobility issues on expedition cruises enjoying the experience, even if the landings part of the trip came with some difficulty.

One line that has designed its expeditions vessels specifically to be more widely accessible for passengers with mobility issues is Viking, a line that traditionally has catered to travelers ages 55 to 75 years old.

Viking's two expedition ships, which debuted in 2022, were built with an unusual enclosed marina that allows passengers to easily transfer into 12-seat "special operations boats" while still in the protected interior of the ship. It's a first for an expedition cruise ship, and it makes it easier for passengers with mobility issues to get on and off the ship and see wildlife and scenery up close.

Bottom line

Expedition cruising is nothing like traditional cruising. It's all about getting to off-the-beaten-path destinations, including places with no infrastructure for tourism, such as Antarctica and parts of the Arctic, Galapagos and Amazon River basin. If you're hoping to see scenic wonders and wildlife, and you're up for an adventure, then an expedition cruise may be right for you. If so, you'll find a wide range of both destinations to visit by expedition cruise ship and companies that offer them.

2 crew members die on Holland America ship; fire breaks out on Carnival cruise

MIAMI — Two crew members died on board a Holland America cruise ship, and a fire broke out on a Carnival ship while both of the ships were in the Bahamas this weekend, officials said.

The two crew on the Florida-based Nieuw Amsterdam died Friday during an "accidental steam release" while it was calling at the private resort island Half Moon Cay, Holland America said in a statement on Sunday.

"There was an accidental steam release in an engineering space on board Nieuw Amsterdam, which sadly resulted in the death of two crew members," the cruise line said.

The Bahamas Maritime Authority and the Dutch Safety Board were investigating the exact cause of the release, Holland America said.

A representative of the Bahama’s Coroner’s Court did not immediately respond to a request for information, such as the crew members’ identities and the cause and manner of death.

The cruise line said the conclusions of any investigation would be taken seriously. "Safety is always our top priority, and we are working to understand what, if anything, can be learned from this tragic accident," it said.

Passenger Laine Doss said she was on board when the captain announced the deaths on the vessel's P.A. system.

"We were celebrating the last day of the cruise," she said, when the mood changed "to something extremely somber."

The captain's voice broke, she said.

"He broke down crying," Doss said. "There was a moment of silence that the captain requested. And that entire scenario did affect the entire cruise. Things were canceled, joyous events were canceled, and we really just thought about mortality — the people who perished on the ship."

Crew members were being offered counseling, Holland America said.

Dutch government inspectors determined the vessel to be "fully operable," and this was "confirmed" by the U.S. Coast Guard, the cruise line said.

A U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson said she was looking into the statement and was unable to immediately confirm it.

The Nieuw Amsterdam returned Saturday to its home port of Fort Lauderdale, guests disembarked, and the vessel has embarked on a cruise with a stop in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, on Monday, Holland America said.

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this event," the cruise line said. "We’ve been in contact with the families of both team members and are offering our support to them and to all of our crew at this difficult time."

The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip.

Fire on the port-side exhaust funnel of another Florida-based cruise ship in the Bahamas, the Carnival Freedom, rocked some passengers Saturday and took the ship out of commission for repairs, the cruise line said.

No injuries were reported.

In a statement Sunday, Carnival Cruises acknowledged witness reports of a lightning strike or the sound of thunder before the fire erupted.

Passenger Heath Barnes said the ship was on a detoured path, destined for an unscheduled stop in Freeport, as a result of stormy weather and high winds when fire started.

"I was shocked," he said. "I mean, I looked out there and you're not supposed to see black smoke and fire shooting out of the tail end of the cruise."

The blaze was preceded by "the loudest thunder-lightning clap that I've ever heard in my life," Barnes said.

Ship personnel extinguished the fire, Carnival Cruises said.

The cruise line said a technical team determined the ship sustained enough damage that it will need repairs before it can be returned to scheduled cruises. The funnel was stabilized, passengers were expected to be returned to Port Canaveral, and the ship will set off to Freeport for repairs, it said.

"The damage is more than we first thought and will require an immediate repair to stabilize the funnel, resulting in the cancellation of the March 25 and March 29 cruises from Port Canaveral," Carnival Cruises said.

Passengers scheduled for those late-March cruises are being offered full refunds and credit that can be used for a future cruise, it said.

It was the second funnel fire on the Carnival Freedom since 2022.

I've been on 2 ultra-luxury cruise ships — endless caviar and free flights make the $685 per day worth it

  • The cruise industry's  new ultra-luxury ships  could be worth the expensive fares.
  • Wealthy cruisers get high-end amenities like complimentary flights, caviar, and wine.
  • Luxury small-ship cruising has becoming increasingly popular.

Insider Today

Say goodbye to questionable lunch buffets and tiny, windowless cabins. On ultra-luxury cruises , travelers get mountains of caviar, roundtrip business-class flights, and floating Rolex stores.

When you think of a cruise, you might picture the giant ships run by companies like Royal Caribbean and Norwegian. On these family-friendly floating resorts, activities like go-kart tracks, waterparks, and virtual reality arcades are commonplace.

On smaller, more expensive cruises, these large and loud amenities are replaced with peace, quiet, and foie gras.

Cruises are generally considered an affordable vacation option, with necessities like food and a cabin included in the base fare.

cruise ship 5k

However, many mass-market cruise companies are increasingly following the budget airline model : Charge a cheap fare and pile up plenty of irresistible pay-to-play amenities.

Travelers could easily accidentally blow past their budget by the end of the vacation.

But guests luxuriate on high-end cruises, many of which are all-inclusive and don't have this problem.

cruise ship 5k

Sure, luxury cruises have a higher base fare. But you'll never have to reach for your wallet once on board.

That's about as stress-free as you can get with a vacation.

"I'd rather have a few empty beds and get the right guests at the right price," Michael Ungerer, CEO of MSC Group's new luxury cruise line , Explora Journeys, told Business Insider in 2023. "Most of [the amenities] are already included, so we don't have to upsell."

After going on two luxury cruise ships, I now understand why so many wealthy travelers are splurging on these vacations at sea.

cruise ship 5k

In 2023, I spent one night on Explora Journeys' Explora I while it was docked in New York and three nights on Regent Seven Seas Cruises' Grandeur while it sailed roundtrip from Miami. Both were complimentary non-revenue events for travel agents and media.

Seven Seas Grandeur's least expensive 2024 cruise is a seven-night roundtrip Miami voyage in December, starting at $4,800 per person — about $685 per day. (Travelers can book their own flights and pre-cruise hotels for a discounted fare.)

Meanwhile, Explora I's most affordable itinerary is a $3,030-per-person, 10-night November sailing from Barcelona to Bridgetown, Barbados.

Expensive? Yes. But on a cruise, money buys happiness.

cruise ship 5k

On both ships, the fare includes complimentary bottles of Champagne, WiFi, endless alcoholic beverages, and access to the spa.

With Regent Seven Seas, pre-cruise hotels, every on board restaurant, flights to and from the ship (business class if international), and most excursions are also included.

Ironically, a higher price means a smaller ship.

cruise ship 5k

The 922-guest Explora I stands at 813 feet and 63,900 gross-tons. The 746-guest Seven Seas Grandeur is smaller at 735 feet-long and 55,000 gross-tons.

To compare, Royal Caribbean's most popular and the world's largest cruise ship, the 7,600-guest Icon of the Seas , is a casual 1,196 feet long and 248,663 gross tons.

We’ll likely never see Icon of the Seas’ waterslides and theme park amenities across Regent Seven Seas' or Explora’s fleet.

cruise ship 5k

But small ships have two big benefits: exclusivity and the ability to fit in more desirable ports.

The Grandeur is scheduled to sail to destinations like Oranjestad, Aruba, and Castries, Saint Lucia, while Explora I is planned for Hawaii and Casablanca, Morocco.

Icon of the Seas is exclusively sailing in the Caribbean this year.

Luxury ships still have some traditional amenities like pools, restaurants, and bars — just with an upscale flair, of course.

cruise ship 5k

Instead of arcades, Explora I and Seven Seas Grandeur have cigar lounges.

Instead of a kid's playground, the latter has a quiet library.

Even the drinking water is better: No need to travel to Erewhon to sip on crystal-infused water. Just head to Explora I's spa instead.

The devil (quiet references to quiet luxury) is in the ships’ details.

cruise ship 5k

Explora I has the first Rolex store at sea. The Cartier boutique is right next door.

Up a few decks, travelers can workout at the Technogym Artis Line-supplied gym, where a treadmill costs $20,250 and an elliptical $15,500.

Meanwhile, Seven Seas Grandeur is decorated with 503 chandeliers and a $6 million art collection that includes several original Pablo Picasso pieces and a custom Fabergé egg.

As expected, the food on these luxury ships are comparable to Michelin-starred restaurants.

cruise ship 5k

Both floating five-star resorts have lunch buffets of raw seafood, lobster tails, and crab legs.

For dinner on the Explora I, travelers can dine on the six restaurants' wagyu tataki, grilled octopus, and aged prime rib with potatoes and caviar.

The Seven Seas Grandeur's five restaurants all serve some form of black truffle, sturgeon caviar, or foie gras.

cruise ship 5k

For a 10-night cruise, Regent Seven Seas says its new ship carries 1,200 pounds of lobster, 20 pounds of caviar, and 5,000 bottles of wine — the most pricey at $2,500.

Expensive food means expensive service: Like many high-end on-land restaurants, the hostess always offered me a black napkin when I wore dark pants.

Dinners of steak tartare, lobster, and wine were as commonplace as the scrambled eggs at the breakfast buffet.

cruise ship 5k

And, they're free, according to the laws of " girl math ."

By the end of my second night on the Regent Seven Seas ship, "I'm tired of eating caviar" went from being a joke to a serious statement.

If we're stereotyping, cruise ship bars can be less-than-luxe.

cruise ship 5k

But don't call Explora I's Lobby Bar, which looks like it came out of an actual hotel bar, "trashy." After all, its background music comes from the overhead Steinway piano.

Starbucks outposts are becoming increasingly popular on mass-market ships.

cruise ship 5k

But wealthy cruisers don't get to wake up with green siren-decorated cups of caffeine.

Instead, Explora I and Seven Seas Grandeur have their own coffee shops serving delectable espresso-based drinks and a separate afternoon tea service.

Like the lack of mediocre coffee, travelers on these fine ships will never be stuck in a tiny windowless interior cabin.

cruise ship 5k

The smallest stateroom on the 461-cabin Explora I starts at 377 square-feet and flexes high-end amenities like a Dyson hairdryer.

The 373 cabins on the Seven Seas Grandeur start a bit smaller at 307 square-feet. At least it comes with L'Occitane en Provence products.

Both options have walk-in closets, floor-to-ceiling windows, and balconies. That's unheard of in the cheapest cabin on most mega-ships.

But one of the most pleasant differences between ultra-luxury and mid-tier cruises isn't in the amenities or dining.

cruise ship 5k

It's the general ambiance.

Ultra-luxury ships aren't designed for cruising families with young children . The two ships didn't have cartoonish decor, loud lounges, or an unbearable number of children that could've kicked my fight-or-flight response.

Instead, the high-end vessels' common spaces were modern, mature, and relaxing.

If it seems like everyone you know has recently booked a cruise, you’d be correct.

cruise ship 5k

Popular cruise lines like Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, and Carnival have recently seen off-the-charts bookings.

The same applies to the industry's more niche and expensive peers — especially as travelers have increasingly splurged on luxurious vacations like small-ship cruising.

In February, Harry Sommer, president and CEO of Regent's parent company, Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings , said demand for its luxury brands has been "very high."

After eating caviar and black truffles for every dinner on the Grandeur, I now understand why.

2 Holland America crew members die during "incident" on cruise ship

March 23, 2024 / 1:20 PM EDT / CBS/AP

Two crew members on a Holland America cruise ship died during an "incident" in the ship's engineering space, the cruise line said.

The unidentified crew members died Friday while the Florida-based Nieuw Amsterdam was at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, Holland America said in a statement.

Authorities were notified and the cause of the accident is being investigated, the cruise line said.

"The safety, security and welfare of all guests and crew are the company's absolute priority," the cruise line said. The company also noted reports that these crew members perished in a shipboard fire are not accurate.

The cruise line did not offer any further details about the crew members, nor which agency was handling the investigation. The ship set sail out of Fort Lauderdale on March 16 for a seven-night trip.

Crew members were being offered counseling.

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts and prayers are with our team members' families at this difficult time," the statement said.

Crew member deaths are relatively rare. Researchers at Bowling Green State University found between 2000 and 2019, there were 623 reported deaths on cruise ships, and 89% of those deaths were passengers while 11% of those were crew members.

During the pandemic, four crew members were killed by non-coronavirus causes on  cruise ships with workers stranded onboard .
