Buying Guide and Frequently Asked Questions

There is information you need to know when you want to pick up the correct USB adapter, hub, or docking station for your Microsoft Surface devices.

What is a USB Hub?

A USB Hub is a device that can expand the number of USB ports on a PC, which allows users to connect more devices simultaneously.

How many types of USB Hubs?

There are two types of USB Hub:

  • Self-powered USB hub : A self-powered USB hub derives power from a dedicated source to supply its connected devices.
  • Bus-Powered USB hub : A hub that draws power from the connected host machine (Surface Go) to itself and its connected devices.

Why do I need a USB Hub for my Surface?

There are two reasons why you will need a USB Hub:

  • Connect to a full-size USB device:  Some Surface tablets have only USB-C ports compatible with the full-size USB port with an adapter or hub.
  • Connect multiple USB devices:  Using a USB hub can help you connect your Surface Pro 8 to an external USB keyboard, USB mouse, USB drives, or a printer simultaneously.
  • More connection interfaces:  Some hubs have a built-in Ethernet port, Micro SD, SD port, audio, and more, so you can connect your Surface Pro 8 to more device interfaces that were impossible before.

What is the difference between USB 2.0 and USB 3.0?

Answer USB 3.0 is a newer USB (Universal Serial Bus) standard that provides a faster transfer speed ( 10 times faster than USB 2.0)  at only 480 Mbps.

Can I use a USB 2.0 USB hub with Surface PCs?

Answer Yes, you can! The USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports on Surface devices are backward compatible with all previous versions of USB, including 2.0 and 1.0.

Carrying around with a portable USB hub will help you deal with the need for connectivity options for your Surface tablet or laptop. The docking station will give you instant access to all of your connected peripherals when you are at home or work. All our recommended USB hubs and docking stations fit and work well with Surface devices. We are sure you will be happy with your pick from our list.

Best docking stations for Surface devices in 2023

You don't have to depend on just two Thunderbolt 4 ports on your Surface Pro 9. These docks add more connectivity to your device.

Microsoft's Surface devices are some of the best laptops on the market, featuring premium designs, great displays, and generally high-end performance. Whether it's the Surface Pro 9 , which is arguably the best Windows tablet on the market, or the Surface Laptop Studio 2 , with one of the most unique designs for a laptop, there's a lot of good in Microsoft's lineup. However, ports tend to be one area where the company falls a little flat.

Most Surface devices don't have a ton of ports built-in, but they usually rely on docking stations to expand the port selection if you need to. That's a common approach for premium devices, and in the case of Surface, not only is the company relying on docking stations, it makes some of its own, which you can use to get the best experience. For many years, you had to use the Surface Connect port to expand your selection of ports, but recent models have added Thunderbolt 4 support, so you have a much wider selection to choose from. If you need some help choosing one, we've rounded up some of the best docking stations you can get for your Surface device, depending on the model you have. Let's take a look.

Microsoft Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock

Microsoft surface dock 2, microsoft usb-c travel hub, plugable 16-in-1 thunderbolt 4 dock, caldigit ts4 thunderbolt 4 dock, anker powerexpand 5-in-1 thunderbolt 4 mini dock, plugable usb-c 4k triple display docking station, belkin 6-in-1 usb hub, microsoft surface pro 9, microsoft surface laptop 5, surface laptop studio 2.

The official Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock is the best solution if you have one of the latest Surface devices with Thunderbolt 4 support. It adds three USB-C ports for display outputs, three USB Type-A ports, RJ45 Ethernet, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

If you have an older Surface device that doesn't support Thunderbolt, the Surface Dock 2 remains the best official docking station for you. It adds two display ports via USB-C (up to two 4K displays at 60Hz), two regular USB-C ports, USB Type-A, RJ45 Ethernet, and a headphone jack.

The official Microsoft USB-C Travel Hub works with the vast majority of Surface devices and it's meant to give you more ports while you're on the move. It includes USB-C, USB Type-A, HDMI, RJ45 Ethernet, and even VGA, if you happen to come across an old monitor or projector.

If you have a Thunderbolt-capable Surface device, the Plugable 16-in-1 Thunderbolt 4 Dock is a fantastic alternative. It has a total of 16 ports, including support for four 4K displays at 60Hz, lots of USB Type-A ports, and 2.5Gbps Ethernet. It's one of the best docks around.

There aren't many docks out there with as many ports as the CalDigit TS4 , which has a total of 18 ports available. That includes downstream Thunderbolt ports, multiple USB Type-C and Type-A ports, DisplayPort, 2.5Gbps Ethernet, and both combo and split audio jacks.

If you have a lot of Thunderbolt-based peripherals, like monitors and storage, the Anker PowerExpand 5-in-1 dock gives you three more Thunderbolt downstream ports so you can connect them easily. There's also a USB Type-A port in case you need it.

If you have a lot of 4K monitors but your Surface doesn't support Thunderbolt, the Plugable USB-C 4K Triple Display Docking Station is a great solution. In addition to three 4K displays, it has a lot of USB ports and Ethernet, plus it's reasonably affordable.

Belkin is a very reliable brand making all kinds of tech accessories, and if you want a cheap USB-C dock to add some more ports, this is a great option. You get HDMI, USB Type-A, USB Type-C, and SD card readers for a pretty affordable price. It's also very compact, so you can easily slip it into a bag or pocket.

How to choose a dock for your Surface device

There are a lot of Surface devices on the market right now with different capabilities in terms of ports, and it's important to pay attention to the device you have and the dock you're choosing before making a purchase.

Newer Surface models support Thunderbolt 4

Thunderbolt 4 is the ideal option for docking station, primarily because it's basically an industry standard at this point. If you buy a Thunderbolt 4 dock, it will work on any Thunderbolt 4-capable laptop , whether it's from Microsoft or not. However, only a few of the most recent Surface devices support Thunderbolt 4. Those are:

  • Surface Pro 8 and Pro 9 ( excluding Surface Pro 9 with 5G )
  • Surface Laptop Studio 1 and 2
  • Surface Laptop 5
  • Surface Studio 2+

If you have one of these devices, your best option will be to get a Thunderbolt 4 dock, whether that's the one from Microsoft or any of the other models mentioned here. The decision then comes down to the ports you need for your setup. If you have a lot of USB Type-A peripherals, the official Surface Thunderbolt 4 Dock may be a bit lackluster, for example. I'm personally a fan of the Plugable 16-in-1 Thunderbolt 4 Dock because of the sheer number of ports, including four display outputs.

Most Surface devices have Surface Connect, but it's best on older devices

If you don't have one of those models, the best option you have is the Surface Dock 2, which uses the proprietary Surface Connect port, available on the vast majority of Surface devices. This delivers capabilities close to a Thunderbolt 4 dock, and it has the benefit of using a magnetic connector that makes it easy to disconnect when needed. However, since it's a proprietary connector, you won't be able to use this dock with a non-Surface device. We only recommend this option if your Surface device doesn't support Thunderbolt, though you technically have that option if you want to.

One other thing to keep in mind here is that support for two 4K displays at 60Hz. Those are as follows:

  • Surface Pro 7-9
  • Surface Laptop 3-5
  • Surface Book 3

The following devices will support only one 4K 60Hz display, or two 4K displays at 30Hz:

  • Surface Pro 5 and 6
  • Surface Pro X
  • Surface Laptop 1 and 2
  • Surface Laptop Go 1-3
  • Surface Go 1-4
  • Surface Book 2

Other Surface devices will not be compatible with the Surface Dock 2.

USB-C is almost everywhere

Finally, it's worth mentioning that if you don't have a Surface device with Thunderbolt 4 and the Surface Connect port seems too expensive for you, or you want something that can work on other laptops, you can always turn to generic USB-C docks and hubs, like the official Microsoft USB-C Travel Hub above. Most modern Surface devices have a USB-C port, including the following:

  • Surface Pro 7 or newer
  • Surface Go (all models)
  • Surface Laptop 3 or newer
  • Surface Laptop Go (all models)
  • Surface Laptop Studio (all models)
  • Surface Studio 2 and 2+

All these devices should support the full capabilities of the USB-C hubs that don't require Thunderbolt, including the Plugable USB-C Triple 4K Docking Station, which is one of the best options if you want a powerful dock that doesn't require Thunderbolt and is still widely compatible.

Best docking stations for Surface devices in 2023: Bottom line

No matter what kind of Surface device you have, there's a docking station out there for you. The Thunderbolt-capable Surface devices have the best options here, since Thunderbolt 4 is both capable and widely compatible, making it the best option to buy now and use for the next several years, even if you switch laptops. Surface Connect has great capabilities, too, but it severely restricts your options for docking stations, and if you buy one now, it won't work with other devices in the future. Of course, you can always fall back on regular USB-C, especially if you don't need a ton of ports. No matter what you're looking for, the options above are bound to have something for you.

The Surface Pro 9 is the latest tablet from Microsoft. It comes in new colors and is available with either 12th Gen Intel Core CPUs or the ARM-based Microsoft SQ3 processor, depending on whether you'd like 5G connectivity.

The Surface Laptop 5 features a sleek design, runs Windows 11, and has a touchscreen. For the money, it's one of the best laptops around right now, and for the 15-inch model, it's one of the lightest.

The Surface Laptop Studio 2 is the most powerful device in Microsoft's lineup, with 13th-generation Intel processors and up to Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 graphics. It also includes a sharp 14.4-inch display with a smooth 120Hz refresh rate, and it has a unique form factor, too.

Surface Laptop Studio and Microsoft USB-C travel Hub

When using the MS USB-C Travel Hub with my Laptop Studio with an HDMI connected monitor, the Travel Hub heats up and creates a deep power drain on the laptop. It also seems to fool the Laptop that IT is the power source and the Laptop will stop drawing power from its primary power charge connection. Resultantly, the battery will drain to zero and shut down and will not take a charge. In order to rectify, I have to perform a hardware reset holding the power button down for 60 seconds. Then the laptop will recognize the power input again and charge back to full charge. I always check the obvious things such as whether the power brick is properly connected and a connection light is confirmed on.

I am driving a 4K monitor at 60 Hz when this happens.

I have also noticed that if I leave the travel hub connected while the laptop is turned off at night and still have the ethernet plugged in, the latent ethernet activity will drain the battery overnight.

I have tested USB-C to HDMI with an Apple adapter and do not have this problem.

Is my Microsoft USB-C Travel Hub defective?

Hello FredJacob ,

Thanks for reaching Microsoft Community. We're sorry to learn about this issue on your USB-C hub and device. We'll do our best to help.

Have you also tried your USB-C travel hub to another Surface device and see if issue persists or not?

In the meantime, please give these methods a try and observe if issue still occurs or not:

Run Power troubleshooter. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooter > Power > Run the troubleshooter.

Run the  Surface Diagnostic Toolkit  and check for  Windows Update . Ensure all pending updates are installed.

Manually install drivers and firmware for Surface

Check what is the current OS Build of your Windows version by typing  winver  on the  search bar  near the Windows logo.

Go to  Download driver and firmware for Surface ,  choose (your Surface model) then click  Download. Choose the .msi file closest to your current OS Build and click  Next . After downloading, run and install the .msi then Restart.

Run the System File Checker in Windows (microsoft.com) .

See Troubleshoot problems with USB-C on Surface (microsoft.com) and Troubleshoot connecting Surface to a second screen (microsoft.com) for more troubleshooting guide.

1. Have you tried a different HDMI cable? (Which one are you using?) Not all cables are created equal.

2. It is a little unclear if the power drain/charge stopping only occurs when the monitor is plugged in, can you clarify?

3. Does this happen on both USB-C ports?

4. I've seen some Ethernet reports, but those refer to Ethernet dropping out or stopping working as opposed to traffic while in sleep mode.

5. Did you buy the travel hub in the Microsoft Store (consumer) or the Microsoft Store for Business? While I think this is a marketing mistake, the one in the Business Store does not state it supports Windows 11 yet and I'm wondering if this is a firmware issue (or if these are even different).

Thank you for your prompt response. Here are my answers that I CAN answer right now.

I have not tried a different HDMI cable. However, I have ordered a new USB-C to HDMI cable which I will be trying directly connected to my laptop USB-C port. This, of course will bypass the MS USB-C Travel hub, but I want to ensure a clean connection. I will be checking that the cable meets HDMI 2.1 specs before opening the package.

surface laptop travel hub

Yes. I have tried both USB-C ports with the same results.

I bought the Travel Hub from the online consumer store which states that Windows 11 and my Laptop Studio are supported.

Hello Steven,

I cannot test the hub on another surface device, as this is my first USB-C device. My previous Surface is a Pro 3.

These prompts do not seem to match my Windows 11 UI.

Yes, I have run the full Surface Diagnostics and it found no problems with the battery or power features.

Windows update indicated that my laptop is fully up to date. I always accept new driver updates.

I have reviewed all the online Troubleshooting problems with USB-C on surface from Microsoft.com before posting in this forum.

Thank you for any additional assistance.

I'm still scratching my head on this. Can you check the settings in Device Manager? They should be set like this:

surface laptop travel hub

The only thing I can suggest is to unplug the travel adapter when you are done for the day. Microsoft will ask you to exchange the travel hub to rule out a defect and then if the replacement still has issues, they will ask you to reimage your Surface and start fresh as part of trouble shooting.

Thanks again Barb.

Yes, I checked my Device settings and confirmed that all USB devices were set to allow power saving.

Interestingly, I have for the past two days been using my partners Apple USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter in order to continue using my external monitor and have had no power issues whatso ever. Even leaving it attached overnight.

I will proceed with asking for a return/exchange on my MS Hub and retest when the replacement arrives.

Ultimately, I only planned to use this hub while traveling and have been waiting to get the new Kensington SD5750T Thunderbolt 4 Docking Station for Microsoft Surface Pro 8 and Surface Laptop Studio (K37899NA) for my desktop setup. Since that dock will have its own power, I sincerely doubt I will encounter the power drain issues as I have with the MS Travel Hub.

Many thanks for your help and advice,

Please have a Happy New Year and raise up a toast to Betty White!

Please keep us posted.

My SD5750T JUST arrived today. It had been out of stock in the MS Store, but Wednesday morning it did not show out of stock so I ordered it! They actually shipped it the same day UPS 2nd day air.

HNY to you as well. Betty was one of a kind!

I am so thankful you told me about the Kensington dock availability on the MS site. I went there and there it was, and available! I placed my order there and cancelled the backordered one on Amazon. I am always happy when I can make a purchase outside of Amazon, even if it's another giant like MS.

When I processed the return of the MS Travel Hub, they did not offer an exchange option, so I am just returning it as defective for credit. In the meantime, looking for an alternative, so that I don't have to keep borrowing my partners APPLE adapter, I ordered the Kensignton UH1400P USB-C to be my travel adapter. It will fit those needs well and also adds SD slot for when I resume real photography in the future.

Many thanks again and HNY!

Let us know how that Kensington travel hub works out for you.

Will do. My SD5750T is due to arrive tomorrow. The Kensington Travel hub will not arrive until late January. I can say that I did receive my direct USB-C to HDMI cable from "Cable Matters" yesterday and it works very well with my external monitor. Naturally, I still need either the travel hub or dock to gain USB-A ports, but at least the monitor is working flawlessly.

Will keep you posted.

Best Surface Laptop 5 hubs and docking stations 2024

Need more ports? No problem.

The Surface Laptop 5 is now available for sale and preorders are going out, and many people are sitting down with their fresh PC only to wonder how they're going to connect all of their usual office accessories. The Surface Laptop 5 has one USB-A port, a 3.5mm headset jack, and a Surface Connect hookup, but the real juicy connection is its Thunderbolt 4 port. It's currently the most powerful port you can find on consumer laptops, and there are a bunch of great docking stations available that can take advantage. We've rounded up the best Surface Laptop 5 docks right here, including more affordable hubs.

CalDigit's TS4 is the best Thunderbolt 4 docking station you can buy right now, but it does cost more than a lot of the competition. Nevertheless, it brings more ports than any other dock, up to 98W of charging power (more than enough for the Laptop 5), a lock slot for extra security, and a premium aluminum design.

Kensington's SD5780T is a more affordable alternative that's best suited for an office thanks to its dual lock slots and bracket mounting options. It has 11 total ports (including the host), with HDMI 2.1 and up to 96W charging power. The shell is a durable brushed aluminum, and it comes with a leading three-year warranty.

The Anker 341 is an affordable USB-C hub that you can pack along with your Laptop 5. It has external 4K at 30Hz display support, two USB 3.0 ports for data, downstream USB-C, and a USB-C passthrough port for charging. It also adds microSD and SD card readers, hookups that the Laptop 5 sorely lacks.

Microsoft's own Surface Dock 2 doesn't offer the most modern selection of ports, but it does connect with the proprietary Surface Connect port. This leaves your Laptop 5's native Thunderbolt 4 port free for other accessories. The Dock 2 can charge with up to 120W of power and supports dual 4K displays at a 60Hz refresh rate.

The Element Hub from CalDigit is a nifty little accessory that focuses on offering four downstream USB-A 3.2 (Gen 2) ports and three downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports, greatly expanding your Laptop 5's connectivity. It's capable of up to 60W charging back to the host, and it can handle dual 4K displays at 60Hz in extended or mirror modes. It's built well and it won't take up much space on your desk.

Razer's Thunderbolt 4 Dock Chroma is a powerful option that sets itself apart from the competition with a full aluminum build and customizable underglow RGB lighting. Aside from the fact that it makes your desk look like a rave, it adds three downstream Thunderbolt 4 ports, dual 4K monitor support at 60Hz, and up to 90W of charging power.

If we're making further suggestions ...

Why you can trust Windows Central Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .

CalDigit's TS4 is the best Thunderbolt 4 docking station you can buy right now, and the Surface Laptop 5 has the right connection to make it work. It's also one of the most expensive options currently on the market, yet its popularity often has it sold out at most major online retailers. If you want the best and can find stock, this dock will not disappoint.

Kensington's SD5780T is a more affordable alternative that has fewer ports but nevertheless performs extremely well. If you're working in a public office, the addition of dual lock slots can help keep your hardware where it belongs. The dock also features drilled holes that align with Kensington's mounting brackets, allowing you to get the dock off of your desk to save space.

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

The Moscow Metro Museum of Art: 10 Must-See Stations

There are few times one can claim having been on the subway all afternoon and loving it, but the Moscow Metro provides just that opportunity.  While many cities boast famous public transport systems—New York’s subway, London’s underground, San Salvador’s chicken buses—few warrant hours of exploration.  Moscow is different: Take one ride on the Metro, and you’ll find out that this network of railways can be so much more than point A to B drudgery.

The Metro began operating in 1935 with just thirteen stations, covering less than seven miles, but it has since grown into the world’s third busiest transit system ( Tokyo is first ), spanning about 200 miles and offering over 180 stops along the way.  The construction of the Metro began under Joseph Stalin’s command, and being one of the USSR’s most ambitious building projects, the iron-fisted leader instructed designers to create a place full of svet (radiance) and svetloe budushchee (a radiant future), a palace for the people and a tribute to the Mother nation.

Consequently, the Metro is among the most memorable attractions in Moscow.  The stations provide a unique collection of public art, comparable to anything the city’s galleries have to offer and providing a sense of the Soviet era, which is absent from the State National History Museum.  Even better, touring the Metro delivers palpable, experiential moments, which many of us don’t get standing in front of painting or a case of coins.

Though tours are available , discovering the Moscow Metro on your own provides a much more comprehensive, truer experience, something much less sterile than following a guide.  What better place is there to see the “real” Moscow than on mass transit: A few hours will expose you to characters and caricatures you’ll be hard-pressed to find dining near the Bolshoi Theater.  You become part of the attraction, hear it in the screech of the train, feel it as hurried commuters brush by: The Metro sucks you beneath the city and churns you into the mix.

With the recommendations of our born-and-bred Muscovite students, my wife Emma and I have just taken a self-guided tour of what some locals consider the top ten stations of the Moscow Metro. What most satisfied me about our Metro tour was the sense of adventure .  I loved following our route on the maps of the wagon walls as we circled the city, plotting out the course to the subsequent stops; having the weird sensation of being underground for nearly four hours; and discovering the next cavern of treasures, playing Indiana Jones for the afternoon, piecing together fragments of Russia’s mysterious history.  It’s the ultimate interactive museum.

Top Ten Stations (In order of appearance)

Kievskaya station.

surface laptop travel hub

Kievskaya Station went public in March of 1937, the rails between it and Park Kultury Station being the first to cross the Moscow River.  Kievskaya is full of mosaics depicting aristocratic scenes of Russian life, with great cameo appearances by Lenin, Trotsky, and Stalin.  Each work has a Cyrillic title/explanation etched in the marble beneath it; however, if your Russian is rusty, you can just appreciate seeing familiar revolutionary dates like 1905 ( the Russian Revolution ) and 1917 ( the October Revolution ).

Mayakovskaya Station

Mayakovskaya Station ranks in my top three most notable Metro stations. Mayakovskaya just feels right, done Art Deco but no sense of gaudiness or pretention.  The arches are adorned with rounded chrome piping and create feeling of being in a jukebox, but the roof’s expansive mosaics of the sky are the real showstopper.  Subjects cleverly range from looking up at a high jumper, workers atop a building, spires of Orthodox cathedrals, to nimble aircraft humming by, a fleet of prop planes spelling out CCCP in the bluest of skies.

Novoslobodskaya Station

surface laptop travel hub

Novoslobodskaya is the Metro’s unique stained glass station.  Each column has its own distinctive panels of colorful glass, most of them with a floral theme, some of them capturing the odd sailor, musician, artist, gardener, or stenographer in action.  The glass is framed in Art Deco metalwork, and there is the lovely aspect of discovering panels in the less frequented haunches of the hall (on the trackside, between the incoming staircases).  Novosblod is, I’ve been told, the favorite amongst out-of-town visitors.

Komsomolskaya Station

Komsomolskaya Station is one of palatial grandeur.  It seems both magnificent and obligatory, like the presidential palace of a colonial city.  The yellow ceiling has leafy, white concrete garland and a series of golden military mosaics accenting the tile mosaics of glorified Russian life.  Switching lines here, the hallway has an Alice-in-Wonderland feel, impossibly long with decorative tile walls, culminating in a very old station left in a remarkable state of disrepair, offering a really tangible glimpse behind the palace walls.

Dostoevskaya Station

surface laptop travel hub

Dostoevskaya is a tribute to the late, great hero of Russian literature .  The station at first glance seems bare and unimpressive, a stark marble platform without a whiff of reassembled chips of tile.  However, two columns have eerie stone inlay collages of scenes from Dostoevsky’s work, including The Idiot , The Brothers Karamazov , and Crime and Punishment.   Then, standing at the center of the platform, the marble creates a kaleidoscope of reflections.  At the entrance, there is a large, inlay portrait of the author.

Chkalovskaya Station

Chkalovskaya does space Art Deco style (yet again).  Chrome borders all.  Passageways with curvy overhangs create the illusion of walking through the belly of a chic, new-age spacecraft.  There are two (kos)mosaics, one at each end, with planetary subjects.  Transferring here brings you above ground, where some rather elaborate metalwork is on display.  By name similarity only, I’d expected Komsolskaya Station to deliver some kosmonaut décor; instead, it was Chkalovskaya that took us up to the space station.

Elektrozavodskaya Station

surface laptop travel hub

Elektrozavodskaya is full of marble reliefs of workers, men and women, laboring through the different stages of industry.  The superhuman figures are round with muscles, Hollywood fit, and seemingly undeterred by each Herculean task they respectively perform.  The station is chocked with brass, from hammer and sickle light fixtures to beautiful, angular framework up the innards of the columns.  The station’s art pieces are less clever or extravagant than others, but identifying the different stages of industry is entertaining.

Baumanskaya Statio

Baumanskaya Station is the only stop that wasn’t suggested by the students.  Pulling in, the network of statues was just too enticing: Out of half-circle depressions in the platform’s columns, the USSR’s proud and powerful labor force again flaunts its success.  Pilots, blacksmiths, politicians, and artists have all congregated, posing amongst more Art Deco framing.  At the far end, a massive Soviet flag dons the face of Lenin and banners for ’05, ’17, and ‘45.  Standing in front of the flag, you can play with the echoing roof.

Ploshchad Revolutsii Station

surface laptop travel hub

Novokuznetskaya Station

Novokuznetskaya Station finishes off this tour, more or less, where it started: beautiful mosaics.  This station recalls the skyward-facing pieces from Mayakovskaya (Station #2), only with a little larger pictures in a more cramped, very trafficked area.  Due to a line of street lamps in the center of the platform, it has the atmosphere of a bustling market.  The more inventive sky scenes include a man on a ladder, women picking fruit, and a tank-dozer being craned in.  The station’s also has a handsome black-and-white stone mural.

Here is a map and a brief description of our route:

Start at (1)Kievskaya on the “ring line” (look for the squares at the bottom of the platform signs to help you navigate—the ring line is #5, brown line) and go north to Belorusskaya, make a quick switch to the Dark Green/#2 line, and go south one stop to (2)Mayakovskaya.  Backtrack to the ring line—Brown/#5—and continue north, getting off at (3)Novosblodskaya and (4)Komsolskaya.  At Komsolskaya Station, transfer to the Red/#1 line, go south for two stops to Chistye Prudy, and get on the Light Green/#10 line going north.  Take a look at (5)Dostoevskaya Station on the northern segment of Light Green/#10 line then change directions and head south to (6)Chkalovskaya, which offers a transfer to the Dark Blue/#3 line, going west, away from the city center.  Have a look (7)Elektroskaya Station before backtracking into the center of Moscow, stopping off at (8)Baumskaya, getting off the Dark Blue/#3 line at (9)Ploschad Revolyutsii.  Change to the Dark Green/#2 line and go south one stop to see (10)Novokuznetskaya Station.
