The Rothschild family traces their wine heritage back to 1853 when they purchased an existing chateau and renamed it to what is now the iconic Château Mouton Rothschild. Part of the Rothschild family also owns the equally iconic Château Lafite Rothschild. Today the Rothschild family owns numerous wine estates in Europe as well as in North and South America, South Africa and Australia. And this is only their global wine business – they are involved in a diversity of other businesses including financial, mining, real estate and agricultural ventures.

Robert Mondavi’s family has been in Napa Valley since the 1940s; they purchased Charles Krug Winery in 1943. Robert worked at Charles Krug Winery until branching out on his own to begin Robert Mondavi Winery in 1966. His philosophy about promoting Napa Valley was that ‘the rising tide carries all ships’ – both promoting his own winery as well as his neighbors – essentially promoting Napa Valley as an entire region.

The focus of Opus One’s production is on a single world-class wine each year. However, since 1993 they have created a second much lesser known and promoted label called Overture. This wine is labeled as a Napa Valley Red wine and interestingly is one of a select few annual release wines from any winery in the Napa Valley that is not labeled with a vintage date. Overture is always a blend of multiple vintages from lots that were not selected for the Opus One wine. And this wine generally sees less French oak then its older sister. And some years production is extremely small like in 2001 in which only 2 barrels were produced.

A coveted photograph that we hope to obtain again with our real camera. The Napa Valley Wine Train as seen through one of the Opus One columns

Vintages until 1990 were produced at Robert Mondavi Winery which is physically located almost on the other side of Highway 29 in Oakville. For several years the wine was blandly referred to as napanamedoc until Opus One was ultimately decided as an appropriate name reflecting the significant efforts and details that go into creating the wine each year – and referring to a composers’ first composition. A case of the 1979 Namedoc was sold sight unseen to New York wine merchant Charles Mara for $24,000 at Napa Valley’s very first Auction Napa Valley held in 1981. An article in The Napa Valley Register dated June 20, 1981 indicated the minimum bid on the case of this wine was $275 and it was expected the final bid would be up to 3x that price. Oh, how that was an underestimation of the demand for this wine! At the time, is was the highest price ever paid for a case of Napa Valley produced wine; it was also a significant amount of money in relation to the total amount raised that year, $330,000 of which $140,000 was donated to local hospitals.

In 2004, as part of the sale of Robert Mondavi Winery, half of Opus One was sold. Today Opus One is under an interesting ownership with 50% owned by the public company, Constellation Brands and the other 50% still family owned by the Rothschilds.

One of the most easily recognized winery buildings in all of Napa Valley, glances invariably turn in its direction – especially from first time visitors to the valley driving by on Highway 29. The winery sits on top of an artificially created hill – round in shape, this circular theme is found throughout the winery in terms of its design.

Hospitality Visitors can park on either the left or right side of the building – in our experience the right side typically fills up faster than the left side yet both parking lots are located approximately the same distance from the entrance. Sometimes when it is busy there will be an attendant at the end of the driveway directing people to park. The sizable cream-colored limestone used in the building is reminiscent of public buildings in Washington DC or the Getty Center in Los Angeles.

Their signature wine, Opus One is the only wine available for tasting in the Partner’s Room. For the price a generous amount of wine is poured – not a typical 1 oz pour that most wineries offer. Tours are by appointment and depending on the tour, usually last either 90 minutes (Estate Tour & Tasting, taste of one vintage) or 120 minutes (Library Tour & Tasting, taste of 2 vintages & a more in depth look at the winery). The tours are extremely informative with group sizes kept small.

Tours begin in the ‘salon room’ with a sit-down introduction provided by your host – note the “old world” style furnishings in here. A few items date back to the 18th century and some of the antiques are even much older. These items were hand selected by Robert Mondavi’s wife Margrit and the Baron’s daughter Baroness Philippine Rothschild (both deceased).

Opus One has one of the largest and cleanest looking labs of any Napa winery we have visited to date. Guests will make a short stop here and then proceed to a large production styled room of which the top of about 40 tanks can be seen poking through the floor. This is one of the nicer production facilities you will see in the valley. The de-stemmer, sorting tables and other equipment can easily be wheeled from tank to tank depending on need. Grapes are sorted using an optical sorter (one of the first wineries in the Napa Valley to embrace this technology) and then the grapes are gravity fed into the tanks. Two large rolling doors open with great views of the vineyards in the back of the winery.

During the tour, your host will discuss select details of how they manage their vineyards – from the winery (or from the upper balcony with its 360-degree view of the valley) one can clearly see how healthy and meticulously groomed these vineyards are. Questions are encouraged throughout the tour. A short walk downstairs leads to the actual tanks for a quick description of how they are used during production and then leads out of the tank room past an elegant staircase (which leads back up to the rotunda). Lastly you will enter a room which many might consider the highlight of the tour both because this is where your tasting will occur and also because of the views of the elegant barrel room. This semi-circular room is called “The Grand Chai” and contains approximately 1000 French oak barrels full of wine.

The coveted soils from the To Kalon ‘fan’ (an alluvial fan) feature material washed down from the Mayacamas mountains and run almost all the way to the Napa River just to the east of the winery building. It can be difficult to see from the winery – but looking to the west one can see a slight rise in slope as the soils draw nearer to the base of the Mayacamas mountains.

Grapes are harvested from four vineyard sites (two on the estate property divided by the driveway which leads from Highway 29 to the winery and two across Highway 29 in the To Kalon Vineyard) for a total of approximately 170 planted acres.

Winemaking has become more nuanced over the years including more detailed looks at harvest decisions. Early on under his leadership in agreement with their viticulture team, rather than daytime harvesting, picking was moved to early mornings. Silacci who has been winemaker since 2001, oversaw the isolation of native yeasts from each of their vineyard sites – identifying numerous strains but only working with several for their fermentations. And in additional attention to details, he and the winemaking team worked with UC Davis for several years to measure, monitor and ultimately better understand oxidation reduction potential (ORP) during fermentation (yeast metabolism).

Keeping employees involved in other parts of the operations is an important part of the internal operations at Opus One. Part of the winemaking team’s effort to provide perspective on viticulture to non-production employees is to get them involved in the vineyards. Employees are mentored by those working in viticulture to oversee a small number of vines from pruning to management during the growing season through to harvest.

Winemaker Michael Silacci recalls a winemaker event held in Japan for a number of sommeliers. Equipment technician at the time, Randy Zavala joined the small team from Opus One at the event in Japan – not talking about the wines but about his efforts to keep the tractors operating and details about the specialized equipment he used in the vineyard. Randy died in 2019 but his name lives on at Opus One; the equipment shop on the property is named in his honor – the Randy Zavala Vineyard Equipment Shop.

During several visits to the estate over the years, we have noticed a finesse and a freshness that shows throughout all the vintages. And this transcends age in the bottle – a stability if you will, preserving the brightness of fruit, the liveliness of acidity and a tannin profile that we have noticed can still be somewhat youthful, even on older vintages.

While always a Cabernet Sauvignon based wine, each vintage of Opus One varies in the amount and types of varieties used in the blend. The wines are all aged in new French oak – generally from between 18 and 24 months.

Select Vintages The 2017 Opus One is 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot and 1% Malbec. Shows medium to darker ruby in the glass with intriguing aromatics including hints of dust, old cedar box (this particular aroma trigged an instant recall of our grandmother’s old cedar box lined with velvet which she used to house her jewelry in), red licorice and a clove spice. A little bit floral but not as noticeable as the 2016 vintage. Lingers with a juicy and salivating finish featuring red fruits including cranberry and currant and a hint of tobacco smoke. The tannins are slightly chalky, rounded but with plenty of grip. During a challenging harvest which involved a warm growing season and fires (they harvested the majority of their fruit before the fires began on October 9th of this year), this wine shows plenty of liveliness and elegance.

The 2016 Opus One is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Petit Verdot, 8% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Malbec. The wine is darker ruby in color; initially offers aromas of leather, darker earth, forest floor along with notes of rose petal, an aromatic character that Silacci refers to as rose stems, and berries. One can also smell notes of dust. Somewhat savory in its aromatic presentation. An appealing tension runs the length of the palate – this wine is well layered with an intriguing character. Mouthwatering, juicy and fresh on the finish – with flavors of cranberry and currant. Anchored by rounded tannins which show no sharp edges but retain a moderate grip for quite some time. A truly beautiful wine.

The 2015 Opus One is 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlo, 4% Petit Verdot and 2% Malbec; immediately offers a brightness of fruit aromatics tending to be more red fruit driven with red cherry and berries and some floral notes, including violets. Also, a subtle 5-star spice nuance, anis and clove. Nicely balanced across the palate with a creaminess noticeable more on the entry. Plum and cherry. Offers darker rounded wood and grape tannins. A mouthwatering brightness lingers. Retains the elegance, despite the warm vintage.

Michael recalls his winemaking team needed some additional inspiration throughout this particular harvest; he had them read author Robert Fulghum’s, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten , then later watch Jiro Dreams of Sushi (offering parallels between producing high quality cuisine and winemaking) and also watch, Man on the Wire , the story of walking between the Twin Towers in New York City on a high wire. Regardless of any internal challenges presented during harvest, this vintage came out exceptional.

The 2007 Opus One is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 6% Petit Verdot and 1% Malbec; one can small the vintage in the bouquet – offers riper and sweeter fruit aromatics including plum along with cassis, complemented nicely by baking spices including clove and cardamom. Well layered across the palate with still surprisingly tighter wound tannins. Hints of white pepper pepper towards the back of the palate. Dense and long lasting. Juicy, mouthwatering finish. Has held up very nicely over the past 14 years.

The 2006 Opus One is 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec; offers notes of dark fruit including plum, leather and old cedar box. Slightly savory. As it breathes further, reveals some hints of mocha and chocolate. Shows younger than anticipated on the palate (we tasted 15 year post vintage date) with tannins of medium grip, dusty with earth and darker spice notes lingering on the finish. But the hallmark brightness of Opus One still shows through.

The 2004 Opus One is 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot, 2% Cabernet Franc 1% Malbec: noticeably smooth on the palate, with silky tannins. A good word to describe this wine is balance – not one aspect of the wine dominates. At this age (originally tasted several years post vintage date) the wine is all about vibrant richly layered fruit on the palate – a few years of aging will only improve its character.

The smartly designed logo is a profile image of both Rothschild and Mondavi’s faces. And a bit of wine trivia: Opus One was the only Napa winery verbally or visually referenced in the California Central Coast wine country-based movie Sideways .

In late 2016 Opus One broke ground on a major expansion to both production and guest service space (40,000 square feet of additional space); this was the first change to the winery footprint since its completion in 1991. The extended space houses additional tanks, fermentation rooms, barrel storage and increased visitor tasting areas. Construction was completed in August 2020.

The addition was added to the east side, so the views that everyone has come to know and love looking east from Highway 29 remains the same.

Current production is around 25,000 cases a year. No other winery in the Napa Valley produces this volume of wine at this price point. Very international in their scope of distribution, Opus One is currently sold in over 90 countries with a very strong presence in Asia. As of our latest update to this review approximately 60% of their wine is sold overseas and 40% domestically. For more information and or to arrange a visit, please see: www.opusonewinery.com

Napa Valley: Opus One

I’m mildly obsessed with  robert mondavi  and his family’s story in the napa valley.  the mondavi family  really helped shape what the napa valley wine industry is today by introducing higher quality wine making equipment and techniques to the area. they also put the napa valley on the wine map for the rest of the wine world through strategic marketing programs. (if you haven’t read house of mondavi and robert mondavi’s autobiography i highly suggest it. both books do an excellent job in laying out how the mondavi family helped shape what napa valley is today.).

napa valley opus one tour

With that said, the vineyards I really wanted to visit this trip were all tied to the Mondavi family. However, given that the first day we were tasting with some of The Husbands colleagues I couldn’t force my obsession on them, at least not all day.

First stop –  Opus One Robert Mondavi  started this vineyard with Baron Philippe de Rothschild of France (who at the time was owner of Château Mouton Rothschild winery). The two wanted to combine wine making traditions from their families.

Their first vintage was released in 1979.

Opus One  truly sells “ultra premium” wines (and they act like it). Unlike many wineries in the Napa Valley,  Opus One  only focuses on a single wine each year. Although, they also produce Overture, which as our guide told us is made up of the grapes that “didn’t make the cut” for  Opus One .

Opus One  is located directly across the street from the  Robert Mondavi Winery , it’s “sister winery”. You must make a reservation at  Opus One , even for a tasting, which is all we did. You will not be able to do a tasting without a reservation.

In the tasting you get two wines; we tried vintage 2006 and vintage 2007. Tasting fees – $35 per vintage- are higher than most and this is mainly due to them only producing one vintage a year. While the fees are higher, you are poured more than the traditional one-ounce tasting pour. Both the 2006 and 2007 vintages were made up of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cab Franc, Petit Vendot and a touch of Malbec grapes. I preferred the 2007 vintage, which was a great year for wines throughout the Napa Valley. We were not able to taste the Overture (no one can, for sale only) but did purchase a few bottles and it’s amazing. You can only purchase Overture at the winery; you cannot but it online.

napa valley opus one tour

When  Robert Mondavi  sold his winery in Dec. 2004 to   Constellation Brands, Inc. , he also sold his shares of  Opus One . The winery is still run by Baron Philippe de Rothschild’s family; Constellation Brands acts more of a silent partner. Something to note, the people who work at Opus One all seem to be French and very proud of their wine and pass this “pride” off as snootiness. Ok, just plane rudeness. It was hard to really appreciate the beauty of the wine with the woman working the tasting being so “nice”. So we took glasses of wine upstairs to the deck to enjoy the views and try to regain appreciation for the wine without our “lovely” French guide.

History and Founders

Opus One Winery was founded in 1979 as a joint venture between two wine legends, Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. The winery is located in Napa Valley , California, and produces a single Bordeaux-style blend based on Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.

Legacy of Robert Mondavi

Robert Mondavi was an American winemaking pioneer who helped establish California as a premier wine region. He was known for his passion for wine and his commitment to quality. Mondavi believed that wine was an art form and that it should be accessible to everyone. He was also a strong advocate for sustainable agriculture and was one of the first winemakers to embrace organic farming.

Baron Philippe de Rothschild's Influence

Baron Philippe de Rothschild was the owner of the prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux, France. He was known for his innovative approach to winemaking and his commitment to quality. Rothschild was one of the first winemakers to use stainless steel tanks and to age wine in new oak barrels. He was also a strong advocate for blending different grape varieties to create unique and complex wines.

Formation of the Joint Venture

The joint venture between Mondavi and Rothschild was formed with the goal of creating a single, uncompromising wine that would showcase the best of Napa Valley. The two men shared a passion for excellence and a desire to elevate California's wine reputation on the global stage. They believed that by blending their expertise and resources, they could create a wine that would rival the best of Bordeaux.

The first vintage of Opus One was produced in 1979, and it quickly became a sensation. The wine was praised for its complexity, balance, and elegance, and it helped establish Napa Valley as a premier wine region. Today, Opus One is considered one of the world's finest wines, and it continues to be a testament to the vision and dedication of its founders.

Winery Location and Terroir

Opus One Winery is located in Oakville, Napa Valley, California. The winery is situated on a 170-acre estate that was once a horse ranch. The location of the winery is an essential element in the quality of the wine produced here. The terroir, which is a combination of the geography, the climate, and the soil, plays a crucial role in the taste and character of the wine.

Napa Valley Geography

Napa Valley is a premier wine-growing region in California, known for producing some of the finest wines in the world. The valley is located in the northern part of California, and it is surrounded by mountain ranges that protect it from the harsh coastal winds. The valley is characterized by its Mediterranean climate, with warm, dry summers and cool, wet winters. The soil in the valley is also unique, with a combination of volcanic rock, alluvial deposits, and sedimentary rock.

To Kalon Vineyard

The To Kalon Vineyard is one of the most famous vineyards in Napa Valley. The vineyard is located in Oakville, just a few miles from the Opus One Winery. The vineyard is known for producing some of the best Cabernet Sauvignon grapes in the world, which are used in the production of Opus One wine. The soil in the vineyard is a combination of volcanic rock and alluvial deposits, which gives the grapes a unique flavor and character.

Influence of Climate

The climate in Napa Valley is essential in the production of high-quality wine. The warm, dry summers provide the perfect growing conditions for the grapes, while the cool, wet winters allow the vines to rest. The temperature variations between day and night are also crucial in the development of the grapes, as they help to balance the acidity and sugar levels in the fruit. The terroir, combined with the unique climate in Napa Valley, creates the perfect growing conditions for the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes used in the production of Opus One wine.

In conclusion, the location of the Opus One Winery, combined with the unique terroir and climate in Napa Valley, plays a crucial role in the quality of the wine produced here. Scott Johnson's Contribution

Johnson's design incorporates a range of materials, including limestone, stucco, and glass. The use of limestone gives the winery a timeless, elegant feel, while the glass walls allow visitors to enjoy stunning views of the vineyards and surrounding landscape.

Visitor Center and Terrace

The winery's visitor center and terrace are also noteworthy features of its design. The visitor center is a spacious, light-filled room with high ceilings and large windows that provide panoramic views of the vineyards.

The winery's design seamlessly blends classic European elements with New World style, creating a truly unique and memorable experience for visitors.

Market Position and Pricing

Investment value.

Opus One Winery is known for producing high-quality Bordeaux-style blends that are highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts alike. As a result, Opus One wines have a strong investment value and are often purchased as an investment rather than for immediate consumption. The winery's reputation for excellence and consistent quality has contributed to its strong market position and high prices.

Investing in Opus One wines can be a lucrative venture, as prices have historically appreciated over time. However, it is important to note that wine investments are not without risk, and investors should do their due diligence before making any purchases.

Comparative Analysis

Opus One wines are priced at a premium compared to other wines in the Napa Valley region. For example, the 2021 Opus One is currently priced at $949.97 for a 750ml bottle, while other high-end Napa Valley wines such as Caymus Special Selection and Silver Oak Napa Valley are priced at $200-$300 per bottle.

Opus One's parent company, Constellation Brands, is a leading producer and marketer of beer, wine, and spirits. The company's portfolio includes other high-end wine brands such as Robert Mondavi, The Prisoner Wine Company, and Simi. However, Opus One's prices are significantly higher than these other brands, reflecting its premium position in the market.

Overall, Opus One's market position and pricing reflect its reputation for producing exceptional wines that are highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. While the wines are priced at a premium, their strong investment value and consistent quality make them a worthwhile investment for those willing to take on the associated risks.

The Legendary Opus One Napa Valley Winery

Opus One

Before my Opus One Winery Tour & Tasting. I was beyond excited, hard to believe I was finally getting to visit Opus One.

Opus One

The history of Opus One

The story of the unique partnership behind Opus One began in 1970. The Baron Philippe de Rothschild, perhaps the best-known member of the great winemaking family behind Bordeaux’ Chateau Mouton Rothschild, was visiting the United States. Recognizing the untapped potential of the wine industry in California, the Baron travelled to a wholesaler’s convention in Hawaii. While there he was introduced to Robert Mondavi, best known for his work helping put Napa Valley on the map and for his winery, Robert Mondavi. The Baron offered Mondavi a partnershipwhich Mondavi declined as he was preoccupied with establishing the new Robert Mondavi Winery.

Fast forward eight years, when the men would meet again when the Baron invited Robert Mondavi to visit him at his estate in Bordeaux. It was during this visit that the two men would strike a revolutionary agreement. In the span of about one hour’s time the two great winemakers would lay out the framework of their plan; drawing upon the culture and innovations of both families with the singular goal of producing one exceptional wine in the Napa Valley.

Opus One

With the first vinifucation in 1979, Opus One was produced and aged in barrels at the Robert Mondavi Winery under the care of Lucien Sionneau, winemaker at Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Timothy Mondavi, Robert’s son. Over the course of subsequent years the partnership would acquire vineyards, selected a name of Latin origin and agree on a design for a new winery. Production would continue at the Robert Mondavi Winery under joint supervision until the new Opus One winery construction was completed in 1991.

As if the cellar views were not enough there is also a gorgeous roof terrace you can visit after your tour. We took our last tasting on the tour up and relaxed on a beautiful fall day in Napa. I love it here!

Exploring Opus One Wine: Perfect Symphony in a Bottle

Opus One Wine

When you think of the finest wines in Napa Valley, Opus One Wine undoubtedly comes to mind. This Napa Valley icon represents the perfect blend of tradition and innovation, creating a symphony in a bottle. The founders’ vision was to create a singular wine in the heart of Napa Valley but even they would be surprised what Opus One means to Napa Valley wine today.

In this article, we’ll explore the rich history, exquisite winemaking process, and opulent experience that has made Opus One a legendary luxury wine now over 40 years old.

History of Opus One

History of Opus One

The founders.

Robert Mondavi, an American winemaking legend, and Baron Philippe de Rothschild, the owner of the prestigious Château Mouton Rothschild in France , were united by a passion for excellence and a desire to elevate California’s wine reputation on the global stage.

De Rothschild’s involvement added instant credibility to this joint venture throughout the wine industry.

The Joint Venture

During the early 1970s, Robert Mondavi (Robert Mondavi Winery) and Baron Philippe de Rothschild met at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel on the big island of Hawaii. It was during this meeting that they came up with the idea of producing a refined wine that blended the finest viticultural practices of California with the traditional expertise of Bordeaux winemaking.

Their goal was to create a Napa Valley wine that could rival the best European wines, and they were confident that this winery venture would make it a reality.

In an effort to blend old-world and new-world wine styles into “one grand opus”, Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild collaborated on a joint venture that they later named Opus One.

Although the plans for the winery had been in the works since the early 1970s, the partnership was officially announced in 1980.

To establish the joint venture, Mondavi sold 35 acres from his To Kalon Vineyard in the Oakville AVA in 1980 to the new project. This land and its cabernet sauvignon would eventually serve as the foundation for the Opus One winery estate where they still source their fruit forty years later.

After years of tireless preparation, Opus One Winery became official in 1979 and began producing its first vintage which was made at the nearby Robert Mondavi Winery. In 1989 the winery on the Opus One property was finished so every vintage since then has been made at the current property.

The winery’s first release, the 1979 Opus One, was highly acclaimed and helped to establish the winery as one of the top producers of premium wine in California.

1979 Opus One - The First Vintage

The First Vintage

The inaugural vintage of Opus One, the 1979 vintage, was released in 1984 along with the 1980 vintage, marking the beginning of a remarkable journey that would redefine luxury wine and produce a wine that transcends generations.

The winemaking process

The Winemaking Process

The vineyards.

Opus One sources its grapes from over 100 acres of meticulously cultivated estate vineyards, located in the western portion of Napa Valley’s Oakville AVA.

The four parcels that contribute fruit for Opus One wine include two parcels totaling 100 acres within the world-famous To Kalon vineyard and the Ballestra and River parcels, two parcels totaling another 70 acres.

Grapes and Blending

A blend of classic Bordeaux varietals, Opus One is predominantly composed of Cabernet Sauvignon , with smaller portions of Merlot , Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. Each vintage is carefully crafted to reflect the unique character of the growing season and expresses the technical acumen of the winemaker and his team.

During the harvest season, Opus One ensures that the fruit is well taken care of by implementing various precautions, such as delicate hand harvesting and other traditional approaches including native yeast ferments which are a subtle celebration of each harvest.

The winemaking team, led by winemaker Michael Silacci, does its best to continue to improve the winegrowing process by delicately weaving modern techniques and traditional approaches while contributing the essential human element that makes Opus One a special wine.

Opus One Aging in French Oak Barrels

The Aging Process

Following the art of French winemaking, a sign of De Rothschild’s involvement, Opus One wines are aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, followed by an additional 15 months in the bottle before release. This extended aging period allows the wine to develop its signature elegance and complexity and forms the wine’s balance.

There is no question that modern techniques benefit the wine but it is Opus One’s consistent dedication to quality and innovation in winemaking that’s an ongoing testament to the vision and collaboration of its founders.

The Opus One Experience

The Opus One Experience

The Opus One estate is a testament to the founders’ commitment to quality and attention to detail. The architectural masterpiece designed by Scott Johnson houses the winery, tasting rooms, and private event spaces, all surrounded by stunning landscapes and its signature open space.

Tasting Experiences

Visitors to Opus One can indulge in their choice of three unforgettable tasting experiences where they can enjoy the current vintage of Opus One Wine, library vintages, and Opus One’s highly acclaimed second label called Overture.

Courtyard Tasting – $100

The first tasting experience, called the courtyard tasting, offers you the opportunity to sit in the limestone courtyard and enjoy a 60-minute private tasting of two vintages of Opus One and one glass of its second label Overture.

Opus One Experience – $200

This elevated tasting in the beautiful Partners’ Room offers a 90-minute, hosted, tasting experience. Not only do you get to taste two library vintages of Opus One and the current vintage, but you are also invited to a tour of the winery and facilities. This tasting experience also includes small bites to pair with the wines.

Art of the Table Experience – $750

The third tasting experience offered at Opus One winery is called the “Art of the Table. This immersive experience begins with a tour of the facilities, the grounds, and the garden and ends with a multi-course food and wine pairing.

The current vintage of Opus One can be purchased in a six pack for $2340 in a wood box

Opus One is widely recognized as one of the most prestigious and highest-rated wines in the world. Since its first vintage in 1979, Opus One has consistently earned critical acclaim for its exceptional quality, complexity, and aging potential.

Year after year, Opus One’s wines receive high scores from respected wine critics and publications, including Wine Spectator, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, and James Suckling.

The winery’s commitment to producing fine wine of the highest caliber is reflected in the meticulous attention to detail that goes into every step of the winemaking process, from the selection of the finest grapes to the careful blending of the wine.

With its impeccable track record of excellence, Opus One remains a top choice for wine connoisseurs and collectors around the globe.

OPUS ONE WINE TOUR

I spent a weekend in wine country a few weeks ago and visited one of the best wineries in Napa Valley. Ryan and I heard great things about Opus One Winery  and decided to book a tour to experience it ourselves.

napa valley opus one tour

The moment we entered the estate we were greeted by the simplicity of the courtyard with it’s architectural motif throughout the building. The building is made of modern materials; California redwood, stainless steel and Texas limestone.

There are two types of wine tours (both require reservations):

  • Estate Tour: An overview of Opus One’s history, aesthetics, vineyards and winemaking. This tour is from 1:30-2:30pm daily and cost $85 per person with a taste of the current vintage. Max party in this tour is 4 people and runs for 90 minutes
  • Double Vintage Tour & Tasting : This is a private intimate tour which runs daily at 10:30am and cost $140 per person with a tasting of two vintages of Opus One. Max party in this tour is 4 people and runs for 120 minutes.

Tasting Room

If you’re only interested in a tasting, the Partners’ Room is open daily from 10am to 4pm by appointment only.

Double Vintage Tour & Tasting

Ryan and I had the Double Vintage Tour & Tasting. After we checked in, we were escorted to wait in the Salon. Aliye who’s a seasoned expert welcomed us with our first tasting of Overture, Opus’s second wine. While enjoying our wine she explained the history and the joint partnership between Bordeaux’s Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi.

napa valley opus one tour

Most tours go through the vineyard but since it was raining during our visit we continued the tour past the winemaker’s laboratory onto the winemaking area. From there we went down to the room that houses over 1,000 barrels.

napa valley opus one tour

Making it back to the main room we tasted the 2013 Opus One. Opus One is a Bordeaux-style wine made in California. We had plenty of time to enjoy the current vintage and it definitely was one of the best wines I’ve had! I was very impressed with Aliye’s knowledge and had a great time learning about Opus One.

napa valley opus one tour

After our tour, we decided to purchase a glass of the 2011 vintage. It is often one of the rare chances to try this wine and we’re glad we tried it! We made our way up to the viewing area to enjoy our wine with a breathtaking view of Napa Valley.

Millions of Disneyland guests have soared over this rural Bay Area home

S ince it opened in 2001, Soarin’ Over California has become a staple of Disney theme parks around the world. The relaxing ride glides guests over California’s most famous attractions, from the  Golden Gate Bridge to Yosemite National Park . Although the orange groves, accompanied by the scent of citrus pumped into the room , hold fast in many childhood memories, the most indelible scene comes when dozens of hot air balloons lift up over Napa Valley at sunrise.

And, until now, no one has ever revealed how — or exactly where — Disney captured the footage that millions of people have seen over the past two decades.

Bob Barbarick grew up in the North Bay and found his love for flying after being drafted during the Vietnam War. When he returned home to Napa, he decided to get a pilot’s license. He enjoyed it so much that he quit his job as a Safeway manager and founded Balloons Above the Valley in 1977, he told SFGATE over the phone recently. With Balloons Above the Valley being one of a handful of Napa Valley ballooning companies, he was used to celebrity clientele, so getting a call from Disney in the late 1990s wasn’t too surprising.

Their representatives’ request, however, was.

They wanted to film a video to put somewhere in Disneyland, Barbarick remembered. “We didn’t know what it was going to be,” he said, “but they were going to pay us, so why not?”

Barbarick didn’t have enough balloons for what Disney had in mind, so they enlisted the help of four other Napa Valley companies, gathering a total of 24 balloons. He believes it’s the most hot air balloons ever assembled for a simultaneous launch in Napa history.

Next came another logistical problem: Where would it be safe to launch that many balloons at once? Disney reps contacted local wineries, finding large parking lots that could accommodate the shoot. Long before the proliferation of drones, Disney also arranged for two helicopters rigged with cameras to capture the footage. “They looked like large-ammunition guns coming off of each side of the landing gear,” Barbarick said.

On the day of the shoot, the pilots assembled at sunrise. “That was before cell phones,” Barbarick said, “and even the helicopter pilot had to use a two-way radio.” They lifted one by one above the wineries of Oakville, an unincorporated part of Napa Valley around 3 miles north of Yountville, waiting for the helicopters.

“We could hear them off in the distance,” he said. Then, the choppers appeared. For a moment, Barbarick was gripped by worry as the rotor blades sent ripples through the air. The helicopter nearest Barbarick buzzed between the balloons, angling in different directions to try to get the best vantage point.

“It seemed like he knew what he was doing,” Barbarick said. “He banked the helicopter to the point where we could see him in the cabin of the helicopter.” Barbarick waved as the cameras rolled.

The helicopters did a few more passes between the balloons, capturing the now world-famous footage. (If you’re looking to find the exact spot shown in the ride, the helicopters flew over the Napa River, above a private residence and into the valley where the Opus One and Robert Mondavi wineries are located.)

Happy with their footage, the Disney team packed up and departed, leaving Barbarick and his fellow pilots unsure of what they’d just contributed to. Years passed, and Barbarick figured the project had been scrapped altogether. “We didn’t really think we’d ever see it again,” he said. “But a few years later, I took my kids to Disneyland.”

There, in California Adventure, they noticed an attraction in an airplane hangar called Soarin’ Over California. Barbarick and his three daughters took their seats — and were astonished.

“You could see us in the baskets as we were flying by,” he said. “And you could see us waving.”

Now retired, Barbarick has 45 years of memories as a pilot. When asked if the Soarin’ footage is his career legacy, he paused. He then launched into the story of taking author Danielle Steel for a balloon ride and seeing her Napa Valley home from the air. Afterward, Barbarick started telling tour guests about the famously private writer’s home, prompting someone to knock on the door to meet her. Steel called Barbarick and asked him to knock it off, he recalled with a chuckle.

And there are the trips to Neverland Ranch , where he personally took Michael Jackson for balloon rides above the property. Once, Jackson was shouting down to his pet elephant Gypsy, and Barbarick was stunned to realize that was the name of the balloon they were flying in, too. “What are the chances?” he said.

He clearly had plenty of other highlights. Still, though, his voice filled with wonder when he remembered that sunrise ride two decades ago. “It was a beautiful time for the helicopters to come and do their video,” he said. “We had a really good day.”

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!
