Tour Edge Hot Launch 521 E and C Series Irons – Key Takeaways

  • Tour Edge has released two new game-improvement irons – Hot Launch E521 and C521.
  • The Hot Launch E521 irons are designed to offer extreme launch and forgiveness.
  • The Hot Launch C521 irons are designed around competition specifications.
  • Retail price for the E521 is $89.99 per club . C521 is $69.99 per club.

The Tour Edge 521 irons give golfers two choices in the ever-popular game-improvement segment of the market. Continuing the identity of its Hot Launch line, the defining characteristics are value and performance with just enough choice to satisfy the target clientele.

In that vein, Tour Edge believes not all game-improvement golfers are cut from the same cloth. Slower swing-speed players who need every last drop of technology to help increase launch to access more distance will be best served by the E Series extreme-spec E521 Iron-Wood model.

Conversely, the Tour Edge C-series C521 provides medium (or thereabouts) swing-speed players a more “traditional” looking iron. Tour Edge describes the C521 as classically shaped though it’s fair to suggest that self-appointed adjectives are subjective and relative to the product category. To be clear, the so-called conventional geometry of the Tour Edge C521 is a bit like describing a hot dog as the quintessential tube-steak.

It’s contextually accurate.

With that out of the way, let’s zoom in on some finer points of each offering.

tour edge e521 wedges

Tour Edge E521 Iron-Wood

As with the rest of the Hot Launch line, the “E” stands for “Extreme.” According to Tour Edge, “extreme” is characterized by “a super-low center of gravity (CG), super-shallow faces, offset designs and extremely light premium shafts designed to get the ball launching in the air with ease for slower to mid-tempo swing speed players.”

Basically the array one would expect from any game-improvement set of irons.

As for the term “iron-wood,” Tour Edge asserts that it coined the phrase describing hollow-body irons in 1999. The purpose is similar to that of competing hybrid-irons such as the Cleveland UHX: hybrid-like performance from clubs with lofts traditionally defined as irons.

tour edge e521 wedges

Hollow Body

The purpose of the 17-4 stainless-steel hollow body is straightforward. The design allows for a thinner face (increased ball speeds) and a low/rear CG placement. Redistributing weight away from the geometric center and around the perimeter helps increase the moment of inertia (forgiveness). A shallow face and heel-biased weighting mitigate the left-right ball flight that plagues so many less-accomplished players.

Professional instruction would accomplish the same. Unfortunately, most golfers who like the sound of a $90 per club club price tag arent’t inclined to spend at least that for one lesson.

E521 HOUDINI SOLE

I get it. Those tasked with finding catchy names for keystone technologies ride a fine line. Too generic and no one notices. Too hyperbolic and it lacks credibility. Tour Edge’s Houdini Sole just feels like it was the product at a meeting where everyone was trying a bit too hard.

At face value, the Houdini Sole is characterized by a more rounded leading-edge mass concentrated low/rear in the clubhead. Compared to the HL4 iron-wood , Tour Edge says the weight is 10 percent lower and 15 percent more rearward.

Given this, short of pulling a rabbit out of a hat or walking through a brick wall, I’m not sure the Houdini Sole is going to spawn any on-course illusions.

What it should do is help produce cleaner turf interaction when you catch a shot a little heavy (hit behind the ball).

TOUR EDGE E521 SET OPTIONS

The E521 iron-wood is offered as a seven-piece set and is available in both right and left hand.

Twelve discrete lofts allow golfers an a la carte combo-set option as well.

The stock shafts are KBS Max 80 (steel) and Mitsubishi Fubuki HD (graphite) 50-60 gram, depending on flex.

tour edge e521 wedges

TOUR EDGE C521

Quoting Tour Edge’s product literature, “The C Series features premium, state-of-the-art Competition Spec designs with a higher MOI in classically shaped clubs that provide medium-plus swing speeds the ability to launch the ball easily and with added forgiveness and power across the face.”

There’s a good bit to unpack here but it really starts with the whole “Competition Spec” label.

The C521 is the less game-improvement model of the two options. However, it’s probably a reach to think that seriously competitive golfers will opt for this set as opposed to the myriad choices on the market.

tour edge e521 wedges

That’s not a knock on the capabilities of Tour Edge C521. It’s more so that Tour Edge is depicting the C521 as something of a “better player” iron, using arguably contrived language.  If anything, this approach could take away from what otherwise is an aggressively priced option with more than sufficient performance for the intended customer.

Tour Edge bills the “incredibly soft” 431 stainless steel material as ideal for generating an “optimal feel.” I haven’t hit the C521 irons so, at this point, everything is theoretical. Moreover, I’m not a metallurgist and I didn’t sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night. That said, typically such accolades are reserved for one-piece forged irons and materials like 1025 carbon steel (hello, Mizuno and Srixon). It’s entirely possible that the Tour Edge C521 feels remarkably soft. Or perhaps the sensation at impact is thin and harsh. On balance, it’s probably somewhere in between.

C521 DESIGN

As opposed to the hollow-body E521 Iron-Wood, the defining characteristic of the C521 is an undercut cavity. The purpose of the cavity, whether external or internal, is roughly the same: remove weight and redistribute it in a more advantageous location. Again, with game-improvement equipment, that translates as additional perimeter weighting to increase MOI and/or shifting CG to moderate launch conditions. Specific to the C521, Tour Edge puts the number at a 10-percent increase in MOI over the previous HL4 model.

CHAMFERING?

You’re forgiven if you think this term feels out of place. It’s not. This bit of visual trickery involves beveling edges to produce a certain aesthetic. With golf clubs, it usually involves making a topline appear thinner than it really is. The benefit is a more compact look at address which is preferred by, dare I say, more competitive golfers.

tour edge e521 wedges

TOUR EDGE C521 SET OPTIONS

The C521 iron model is offered as a seven-piece set in both right and left hand.

It also comes as a pre-packaged combo set including two C521 hybrids and five C521 irons.

The stock shafts are KBS Max 80 (steel) and Aldila Rogue (graphite) 55-65 grams depending on flex.

The retail price is $69.99 each (steel or graphite).

tour edge e521 wedges

FITTING AND 48-HOUR DELIVERY PROMISE

Tour Edge will have 850 fitting locations nationwide which allow for a 48-hour delivery to anywhere in the continental United States. Custom fitting is a loaded term but suffice it to say the experience won’t be as in-depth or resource-intensive (time and money) as what you’ll find at True Spec, Cool Clubs or Club Champion. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. In fact, given the likely demographics of the average Hot Launch E521 or C521 irons target audience, it’s probably a good thing.

HOT LAUNCH E521 WEDGES

Golfers who opt for the Hot Launch E521 Iron-Wood will likely look to complete the set with matching wedges. At least that’s what Tour Edge is betting on. There’s an element of common sense here. If your game can benefit from wider soles,  perimeter weighting, and a boost in forgiveness with your irons, why not stick to the same game plan with your wedges?

tour edge e521 wedges

The chief characteristic of the Hot Launch E521 wedges is the Houdini Sole. Tour Edge claims the wide sole and undercut cavity reduces turf interaction by 35 percent. Translation: this wedge won’t dig. Also, with more mass concentrated low/rear, it should help golfers who struggle to get wedge shots airborne and forward. It’s easy for better players to forget how challenging it is to hit something other than a skull or chili-dip off a difficult lie.

A larger overall footprint boosts MOI (forgiveness). While some might feel a bigger club is harder to mishit, I’d side with those who suggest that club-turf interaction is king. Every wedge can do something but there isn’t a single wedge that does everything. The high-bounce E521 should help less-skilled golfers navigate bunkers and dicey lies around the green. The primary downside to such a wedge design is that it’s not ideal for dealing with tight lies. But there’s a good chance the target customer isn’t looking to add a Phil Mickelson flop shot to the arsenal any time soon.

The E521 wedge is available in 52-, 56- and 60-degree lofts in both right and left hand.

The stock shafts are KBS Max 80  Uniflex (steel) and Mitsubishi Fubuiki HD (graphite) 55-60 grams depending on flex.

SOMETHING TO CHEW ON

The context of this release for Tour Edge is intriguing. The first part of 2020 was, from a retail point of view, pretty forgettable. But if there’s a silver lining, it might be that more people are interested in picking up the game. And if you’re going to play golf, you’re going to need golf equipment.

Prior to all of this,  Tour Edge seemed poised with a solution for consumers who weren’t motivated by $500-plus drivers and $1,400 sets of irons. While other equipment manufacturers started touting a value-first mantra, Tour Edge wanted to remind consumers that this has always been something of a sweet spot for the brand.

Hot Launch may not get the equipment gear heads setting calendar reminders. However, it will likely have a tremendous amount to do with Tour Edge’s financial picture in 2021.

If you’re the golfer whose favorite part of new releases is the inevitable price-reduction on the previous generation of clubs, you’re in luck. The Tour Edge HL4 line is already on sale .

The new Tour Edge Hot Launch 521 E and C Series irons are available beginning Nov. 1.

I am playing the C521 in graphite. Switched over from steel irons. I am hitting these clubs 20+ years further than my steel irons. (8 iron 160 yds). High ball flight, ball comes off the face like butter. Best Irons I have ever hit and I have hit them all.

Ol'pal Gary

Like Chuck, i’m in my 70’s with a few disabilities, i’m still trying to get my swing & game close to where it was, before Heart Attack, Hip Replacement, Neuropathy & a few others messed me up. I’ve got the Exotic Driver & 3 wood but as i’m a Lefty irons are very hard to come by. I even wrote to the company why i couldn’t find any Left hands irons in Exotic or even Top line Hot Launch C 521 or E 521 . It’s been quite some time ago & they didn’t get back to me. So i took that to mean they weren’t interested in selling to Left Handers. Both of these offering could find a spot in my bag along with the TE Driver & 3 wood. Chuck you keep on improving your game, i sure will. i just bought a full set of callaway Mavriks & still trying to adjust to them !!

Mike Romano

I too am a senior left-hander. It’s amazing how neglected the left-handed golfer is by equipment manufacturers.

If you think it is tough finding left handed clubs for men, try looking for clubs for a left handed female golfer.

Chuck Worgull

I have played with Tour Edge iron’s for the past 20 plus years. I think it might be time to upgrade. As I am 77 years young, I can’t hit my driver’s 275yrds now, but I can still get it out around 220, and I also have a couple of disability. Neuropathy in my feet which has screwed up my balance and C-3, C-4 & C-5 with six screws plates between 3-4 & 4-5.0. I was an 8 handicap, now I am a 15. I would like to get back to at least a 10 – 12. Do you think that it’s possible?? Thanks for reading about my problems. Chuck

Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 Wedge Review

Tour edge hot launch e521 wedge.

We have officially hit the final installment of our Tour Edge Hot Launch 521 reviews. Our last stop on the journey is the Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 wedge. Like the rest of the Hot Launch 521 E Series, the E521 wedge is designed to make the game easier to play and assist any player that can use every ounce of help they can get. Inspired by the original Tour Edge 1 Out wedge, the E521 wedge makes getting up, out, and onto the green as easy as possible for almost anyone .

Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 Wedge 6

What I appreciate about the Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 wedge is that it looks every bit of a super game improvement wedge, but the super wide sole hides nicely under the face at address and the offset doesn’t look all that extreme. The face is oversized giving you more surface area to strike the ball in any lie, and it also helps provide a larger sweet spot in working with the deep undercut activity. Additionally, that larger face also helps raise the MOI so the club doesn’t twist at impact and your shot is more accurate. There’s a lot going on when you look at the bottom of the sole and cavity, but everything serves a very functional purpose which we’ll discuss further in this review.

Feel 8

How Does it Feel?

In my opinion, the biggest contributors to the Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 wedge are the Houdini Sole design and the sole’s super wide profile. The wider sole both adds weight to the head and more surface to help the club guide itself squarely through the turf so you make good contact with the extra large face. This is especially beneficial when you hit a shot fat because it will go a long way to bail you out. Add in the Houdini Sole and the club glides through the turf or sand much smoother. The Houdini Sole reduces “turf interaction” which helps the club from snagging and digging so you’ll make better contact.

Going back to the large face and deep undercut cavity, the E521 wedge feels very forgiving . The real benefit is that you can miss high on the face, toward the heel, or toward the toe and the response still feels good. In short, the E521 very much allows you to be imperfect and still get good feel . Add in the stock Fubuki shaft and the E521 wedge feels very pleasant in your hands with its smooth profile.

Sound 11

How Does it Sound?

There are three distinct sounds from the Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 wedge. The first two sounds are a result of the sole. When you slip through the turf fairly cleanly, the sole almost slides along the ground making a sweeping “whoosh” sound. Of course, the E521 is designed for the player that doesn’t necessarily slip through the turf cleanly and gets a little chunky. The sole design of the E521 wedge works in such a way that it will still get through the turf with a pronounced “thump” sound. Frankly, it’s pretty impressive how deep you can go and still get that sound and a decent golf shot.

The third distinct sound is obviously off of the E521’s face. A larger face with a deep cavity like this one is always going to give you a more “open” sound. Pretty much anywhere you strike the ball on the face falls somewhere between a “slap” and a “whack”, with a medium hint of “click”. I felt like fuller swings had more of a “whap” sound at impact which was quite a bit different than little touch shots around the green.

Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 Wedge 2

On-Course Performance

The Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 wedge isn’t necessarily the most versatile from a performance perspective, but it’s not supposed to be. The primary objective of this wedge is to make it easier for higher-handicap players to pop the ball in the air and move it forward. Especially in bunkers. And you know what? The E521 does that very well. Whether you’re in a bunker, the rough, or a tight fairway, it’s almost as if you just set the club square behind the ball and swing. The club will do the rest. You have to get a feel for distance control, but the E521 wedge easily pops the ball up with a higher trajectory and 100% makes the wedge as close to fool proof as possible .

Once again, a major reason for this is the Houdini Sole and the sole’s larger size. As I mentioned earlier, this adds a lot of weight at the bottom of the club. This in turn lowers the center of gravity (CG) in the head which helps launch the ball in the air easier and can add some spin to the shot. (The stock Fubuki shaft will also help in both of these areas, by the way.) The Houdini sole is also placed in the right area of the sole to make the CG more centrally located which also makes the wedge more forgiving and easier to hit.

I want to highlight the Hot Launch E521’s bunker performance. In the intro I mentioned the E521 wedge is heavily inspired by the original 1 Out wedge. The purpose of this club was exactly as the name says – you only need one shot to get it out of the bunker. Like the 1 Out, the E521 makes it almost impossible to NOT get out of the sand.

Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 Wedge 3

Final Thoughts – Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 Wedge

All along our journey through the Tour Edge Hot Launch 521 clubs, the E Series has easily been the star. Don’t get me wrong, the C521 clubs have been absolutely great, but the quality and performance of the E Series has been borderline astounding . Tour Edge set out to make clubs that make the game playable for almost anyone, and I think the Hot Launch 521 E Series has certainly accomplished that goal. Not only did Tour Edge accomplish their goal, but they did so at an extremely affordable price point. Especially considering how good the gear is.

This Hot Launch 521 lineup has really changed my perspective of Game Improvement/Super Game Improvement clubs. No, the Hot Launch E521 wedge may not be intended for me, but I think there is a HUGE range of players it would greatly benefit. Wedges are easily some of the most difficult clubs to hit well and players of all skill levels struggle with it. This particular wedge could be a life saver for many more players than just those that are newer to the game. If you want to make your wedge game much easier just by swapping in a new club, the Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 is definitely a wedge worth checking out. Especially at its very affordable price point of $90.

Tour Edge Hot Launch C521 iron, E521 Iron-Woods, wedges

tour edge e521 wedges

Tour Edge’s new Hot Launch 521 line of clubs gives golfers two distinct options when it comes to game improvement technologies. The C521 series designed to “Competition Spec” to offer more traditional-looking clubs packed with technology and the E521 series packed with “Extreme forgiveness” to help golfers looking for maximum game improvement.

Along with the drivers , fairway woods , and hybrids , the lines are rounded out with the C521 irons along with the E521 IronWoods and wedges. When you put it all together, the entire line offers 46 different lofts of clubs in right-handed and 20 lofts in left-handed, making it the single biggest launch of clubs it Tour Edge’s history.

“We see these two series as being the best value available in the custom fitting market and that’s exactly why we created our 48-hour custom fitting delivery guarantee. We want to open up the flood gates to custom fitting to golfers who are looking for the  latest in innovation and extremely high performance at logical prices.”  – David Glod, founder of Tour Edge

tour edge e521 wedges

Tour Edge C521 Irons

tour edge e521 wedges

The Hot Launch C521 irons come packed with everything you would expect from a game-improvement set of irons along with a few extras. They are made from extremely soft 431 stainless steel to provide tour-level feel as well as the ability to be adjusted for lie and loft easily. This means greater opportunity for custom fitting.

Now speaking to custom fitting and additional options, the C521 irons will also be available in a stock combo set configuration that includes two Hot Launch C521 hybrids.

Technology and design characteristics

Undercut Cavity:  Undercut cavities are a staple in the game improvement iron category and the C Series expanded undercut design helps generate better ball speeds around the face, especially on mishits. The deep undercut cavity also allows for the face to be made thinner which gives designers the ability to move more weight to the sole and help boost the MOI. According to Tour Edge, the MOI of the C521 irons has increased 10 percent compared to the previous model resulting in better dispersion.

Wide Sole Design:  The sole is 15-percent wider than the previous Hot Launch irons for a lower center of gravity. The wide yet newly cambered sole offers improved turf interaction for more consistent shot-making from good lies and bad.

Chamfered Face:  Don’t feel bad, I had to look this up too. To “chamfer” is to ease/reduce sharp edges—in other words, it’s a different way of saying bevel or rounding, which are more common terms in golf club design. The chamfered face around the topline and leading edge give designers the ability to create a bigger clubface for added forgiveness without compromising the looks of the irons.

Power Lofts:  To help golfers gain extra distance and achieve a more desirable trajectory, the C Series irons have been power-lofted, but thanks to the lower center of gravity afforded by the wide soles, the C521’s still maintain higher launch angles. These higher-launching, lower-spinning shots result in steeper angles of descent to help hold greens from longer distances.

E521 Iron-woods

tour edge e521 wedges

For those not familiar, Tour Edge and its hollow body iron-woods have been helping golfers get the most out of their game since 1999. They combine fairway wood and hybrid technology into a controllable and forgiving iron design.

By using the same strong 17-4 stainless steel as the Hot Launch E521 fairway woods and hybrids, designers are able to achieve extremely low centers of gravity to make them some of the most forgiving clubs on the market—and compete with clubs more than twice their price.

Technology and design

Houdini Sole Technology:  The Hot Launch E521 Iron-Woods offer the same Houdini Sole design as the driver, fairway metals, and hybrids to improve turf interaction by 35 percent and boost forgiveness. According to Tour Edge, the center of gravity is 10-percent lower and 15-percent further back compared to the previous HL4 iron-woods, which makes the E521’s the highest launching and easiest-to-hit Iron-Woods they have ever made.

tour edge e521 wedges

The key element of the Houdini design is its sharply curved leading edge which has proven to be extremely effective in helping get shots into the air, even from the toughest lies.

“The Houdini Sole becomes a complete life-saver from tight and tough lies,”-  David Glod, Tour Edge founder and lead designer

Hollow-Body:  The hollow-body design brings with it the ability to create metal wood properties in a small and more compact iron shape. The achieved perimeter weighting creates an extremely low center of gravity and really helps golfers on the medium to lower end of the speed spectrum the opportunity to achieve a powerful ball flight.

Cup Forged Face:  The super-thin forged face helps increase overall ball speed around the clubface resulting in higher peak heights, and distance to make it easy to hold greens from longer distances.

Slice-Fighting Offset:  When it works it works and offset is a proven way to help golfers reduce or eliminate the dreaded slice. When paired with the heel bias weighting of the head, you can expect to see less of the right side of the course—or the left side for you lefties out there.

The E521 irons will retail for $89.99 each and will be available November 1, 2020.

E521 Wedges

tour edge e521 wedges

The Hot Launch E521 Wedge features a super-wide sole that pushes as much weight low in the head as possible to make it easy to get the ball up in the air and stop shots faster around the greens.

The dual-flange Houdini sole offers an abundance of bounce (14 degrees) to allow the wedge to get through almost any lie without the fear of digging or chunking shots. The E521 wedges are available individually or as part of the Hot Launch E521 Iron-Wood set and come in a gap, sand, and lob wedge.

Houdini Sole:  The Houdini Sole with its aggressively curved leading edge reduces turf interaction by 35 percent. This helps the wedges glide through even the toughest lies and significantly reduces “duffs and chunks,” per Tour Edge.

Extra Large Face Design:  Thanks to a deep undercut cavity that increases forgiveness, the wedge faces are able to be made oversized to create an overall larger striking area. This means that shots missed further around the face maintain more ball speed and end up on the green instead of coming up short.

Maximized Grooves:  The grooves of the E521 wedges are maximized to USGA depth and sharpness to provide maximum spin and control.

Spotted: Titleist TSR 2-wood “mini driver”

tour edge e521 wedges

There has been a big demand recently for mini drivers — otherwise known as larger, lower-spin, fairway woods — from every manufacturer. This week at The Players, we spotted Titleist with a TSR 2-wood that definitely fits into the mini driver category.

The TSR is marked with “2W” on the hosel, but when we looked on the USGA conforming list website, it is listed as a 13-degree head. Titleist’s SureFit hosel system is in place, so you can remove 0.75 degrees or add 1.5 degrees of loft, while also being able to adjust the lie angle.

tour edge e521 wedges

To go further with the adjustments, the TSR has two movable and interchangeable weights on the sole and back of the club, similar to the setup of the TSR4 driver. Usually, this setup is used to move a heavier weight to the back for added launch, spin, and forgiveness. Moving the heavier weight forward to the sole typically will lower the spin and launch for the players who need it.

tour edge e521 wedges

This TSR looks to have a much deeper face and larger size than the current TSR2+ fairway that is currently available. The club has no markings, and Titleist isn’t dishing details yet, about its construction so we don’t know if it is a titanium head, steel, or a combination of a titanium face and steel body.

Everything you need to know about Scottie Scheffler’s new TaylorMade Spider Tour X putter

tour edge e521 wedges

For close to a year now, many have been saying that Scottie Scheffler would be unbeatable if he could just putt to field average.

At the Arnold Palmer Invitational, Scheffler did more than that. The world number one gained 4.36 strokes putting and won the event by a whopping five shots. It was the best Strokes Gained: Putting week for Scheffler since the 2022 Waste Management Phoenix Open.

tour edge e521 wedges

Considering the timing, the great putting week for Scottie looks to have been sparked by an equipment change. Prior to teeing it up at Bay Hill, Scheffler made a switch to a new putter.

tour edge e521 wedges

According to TaylorMade, Scheffler switched to a Spider Tour X with these specifications.

  • 80/20 Pure Roll insert
  • 35.5 length
  • 3 degrees of loft and 72 degrees lie angle

Additionally, TM mentioned a the putter features a full sight line, which in testing freed him up to not use a line on the ball and Scheffler embraced the company’s True Path Alignment system.

tour edge e521 wedges

Following his victory, Scheffler was asked in his post-tournament presser if he had found the putter he’d be using for a while. Scheffler’s responded, saying:

“I mean, hopefully. (Laughing.) Yeah, I like not having to line the ball up. I line this putter up well in the middle of the face. It’s very good visually. And yeah, I try not to focus too much on the results, but my process was really good this week and the results so far are pretty tough to argue with, I would say.”

ClubTest 2021: Tour Edge Hot Launch E521/C521 irons

Courtesy of Tour Edge

For ClubTest 2021, we tested and reviewed 53 new iron sets to help you find the right one for your game. (For more on our testing process, click here .) Below are the results for the Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 and C521 irons. You can find the full list of irons and test results here .

Tour Edge Hot Launch E521/C521

E521: 3-AW ; C521: 4-PW

Our take : “Please forgive me, Golf Gods, for I have swung. The Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 and C521 irons have answered my prayers,” according to one tester during GOLF’s ClubTest. “As a high-handicap golfer, I’ll take all the heel-toe forgiveness I can get,” the tester said. “The sound was especially good for an iron at this size.” Amen.

Tour Edge Hot Launch C521 Irons

The details:  Forgiveness is featured throughout the E521 and C521 Hot Launch irons. The E521 includes a “Houdini” sole that reduces turf interaction by 35 percent, according to Tour Edge; hollow-body perimeter weighting that creates distance properties of a metal wood; and a shallow cup forged face that produces higher launch angles. The C521 includes an expanded undercut cavity that moves more weight back for stability; a wide sole design that lowers the center of gravity for more consistent contact; and a chamfered top line that increases face height and thickness for, you guessed it, forgiveness.

Hot Launch E521

Our Review:

Hybrid irons with hollow bodies are Tour Edge’s wheelhouse, and it’s easy to see how “get the ball up in the air” is the most important consideration here. The hollow-body construction provides metalwood-like flex on the face. Designers also engineered a wide sole to create a low and deep center of gravity to launch shots high. The sole also aggressively addresses the challenge of turf interaction. By using a raised, angled mass in the back of the sole (those familiar with the Ginty wood from the early 1970s will recognize the similarities), the sole’s ability to reduce contact with the turf is enhanced, and when it does hit grass, it plows through it more easily. The ample amount of offset helps slicers reduce unwanted curve, and the shallow-face height throughout is a comforting look at address. The stock shaft is the Mitsubishi Fubuki that ranges from a feathery 55 grams to 60 grams depending on the flex. Another Tour Edge strength is providing options, and this set has plenty. Golfers can create their set from a 12-club range of lofts stretching from 20 to 60 degrees. There’s also the ability to select a combo set that includes two E521 hybrids to go with five E521 iron-woods. Read more >>

Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 Driver

Our verdict on this easy-to-hit, entry-level driver from Tour Edge

  • Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter

tour edge e521 wedges

Ball flight, sound and accuracy are pretty fantastic, especially when hit out of the screws. Expect a soaring, tall ball flight - even if you’re typically a low-ball hitter. And for the price, it’s a no-brainer for golfers with a slow to moderate swing speed who are on a budget.

A non-adjustable driver yielding a welcome high trajectory that feels and sounds powerful. Has a conservative shiny black look and inviting round shape at address.

Make sure that the stock shaft is right for you, as it can feel soft.

Scott Kramer

In this Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 driver review, Scott Kramer takes this draw-biased, entry-level driver for a test drive

Tour Edge Hot Launch E521 Driver Review

This 460cc driver may well win you over even before you see the low price tag. Part of the longstanding Hot Launch line from Tour Edge, which includes the Hot Launch C521 driver we tested recently, it’s plenty affordable compared to other similar-style drivers on the market.

The “E” in its name stands for extreme, which refers to extreme game improvement, aiming to be one of the best drivers for high handicappers . Therefore, it has an inviting yet plain-Jane look at address that many golfers may covet: a shallow-faced clubhead with classic shaping.

The “Houdini” sole places weight low and deep in the head, so that launching the ball high and with forgiveness becomes the norm. That’s why the company bills this as the “easiest driver you will ever hit” on its website.

With the loft set at 10.5°, ball flight in our testing seemingly played at a trajectory several degrees higher.

Then there’s the strategically placed heel draw-bias weight on the sole plus the slight offset of the clubhead that work in concert to help square the clubface at impact, so that ball flight is mostly straight and avoids the right side.

But we ultimately choose a driver for the distance it gets us. And in this case, distance is very good, with shots in our testing often reaching typical landing spots without us having to step into it. Impact sounds and feels quite solid.

The other thing we look for in drivers is accuracy. This one should find the fairways on a consistent basis, for no other reason than its shaft is only 44.5 inches long - that’s about an inch shy of many driver shafts in popular models these days.

A shorter shaft is more controllable, which translates into straighter tee shots because you will hit the centre of the clubface more often at impact.

Speaking of the shaft, this driver comes standard with the Mitsubishi Fubuki and its weight will depend on the flex you select. It feels solidly soft, an encouraging nod to the mid and higher handicaps who will be attracted to this model.

What is loft.

Loft affects trajectory and spin rate and therefor it determines the distance the ball will travel. More loft typically generates a higher trajectory and more spin while lower loft causes the ball to fly lower and spin less.

Tour Edge Hot Launch 524 irons and wedges: What you need to know

What you need to know: Tour Edge’s Hot Launch C524 irons and wedges are designed for golfers who prefer a more classic cavity-back design. The E524 irons and wedges provide plenty of help by focusing on ease of getting the ball up in the air or, in the case of the wedges, out of the sand.

Price/Availability: The Hot Launch C524 irons and wedges cost $80 per iron while the E523 irons and wedges go for $100 per club. All will be at retail stores on March 1.

1. Feel is the deal

While generally a more traditional cavity-back design, the 431 stainless-steel C524’s wide sole helps on heavier hits while the 360-degree undercut in the cavity works with extra mass in the toe to enhance moment of inertia for better performance on off-center strikes while promoting face flex.

The company also continued down the path of using its VIBRCOR high-grade thermoplastic urethane to enhance feel and promote a pleasing sound. The TPU—10 percent more than in the C523—is placed in the deep undercut pocket to boost perimeter weighting for forgiveness while bolstering speed and enhancing feel.

2. Ready for launch

The E524 hollow-body hybrid irons offer help in a different way, promoting higher launch and draw bias. The company has also taken an aggressive approach to turf interaction by using its “Houdini sole” employed in some of its fairway woods and hybrids to effectively cut through the ground. The raised mass at the rear of the clubhead also helps lower the CG, assisting launch.

The irons also employ a shallow face height to encourage higher launch while the hollow-body design takes that a step further by placing weight low. The offset design helps counter the slice to some degree, as well. All this comes in a new shape that is slightly longer front to back but with a thinner topline.

3. Wedges that work

The Hot Launch irons extend to C524 and E524 wedges. The C524 uses 20 percent more thermoplastic urethane in the undercut pocket to dampen unwanted vibrations. Extra weight in the toe portion of the club expands the sweet spot and assists shots struck high on the face. The wedges are available in lofts of 50 to 60 degrees in two-degree increments.

The E524 wedges feature a wide, Houdini sole designed to make bunker escape a breeze. The sole has been slightly slimmed with more camber added to make it less of a specialty wedge. The deep undercut in the cavity back design frees up the extra mass that's moved low to provide a higher launch while full-face grooves provide plenty of grab on shots around the green. The wedges are available in lofts of 52, 56 and 60 degrees.
