Kodaline are an Irish rock band, originating from Dublin, Ireland. Their music style is often cited as belonging to the indie genre.

The band is made up of childhood friends Steve Garrigan, on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, and Mark Prendergast, on lead guitar, backing vocals and keyboards. The other two members consist of Vinny May on drums, percussion and backing vocals and Jason Boland, who plays bass guitar and also provides backing vocals. Garrigan and Prendergast grew up in Swords, Dublin together. They attended the same school and took part in many ‘battle of the bands’ together, indicating an early love for music that would later shape their careers.

Formed in 2005 under the name 21 Demands, the band changed their name in 2011 to Kodaline and soon after started to gain in popularity and fame as their star grew brighter and brighter. They transformed from an unsigned, unknown band to one of the most popular indie bands today, eventually signing with RCA records. Their debut EP, self- entitled, was released on 7 September 2012 and their first studio album, ‘In a Perfect World’, was released on 17 June 2013. Both albums received great critical acclaim and resulted in enormous success for the band in the indie scene. From their debut EP, the single ‘All I Want’ was selected as BBC Radio 1s record of the week, allowing the relatively unknown band some great exposure. It also featured in Grey’s Anatomy, garnering the band even more exposure. Their second album contained recurring singles from the first as well as many new tracks such as ‘One Day’, ‘Brand New Day’ and ‘After the Fall’.

Their songs have been used extensively on television, as background tracks to The Vampire Diaries and The Fault in Our Stars, to name but a few. Potentially the most popular track the band has produced to date is their hit single ‘High Hopes’.

Live reviews

First of all, I'd like to thank songkick for letting me know about Kodaline coming to Lyon.

I've discovered this amazing band last year through a friend and I've been a die hard fan of theirs since then.

Never had I thought that they'd come to a concert 10 minutes away from where I live !!

I've had the ticket nice and ready 5 months prior to the show and I can say that it was completely worth the wait.

The concert opened up with a performance from an Irish band called "All Tvvins" who are quite good btw, people should totally check them out !

After 5 or 6 songs from the opening band and some 20 minutes of (unbearable !) waiting, the moment we've all been waiting for finally came and Kodaline entered the stage, opening beautifully with the song "Ready" from their second album.

The track list was a mix of songs from both their albums although the second one was a bit more promoted.

Having listened to their songs an endless amount of times, I was pleasantly surprised by how much their live performance is truthful to the studio version and even better might I say because you get to experience the songs with them.

I've never felt so alive in my entire life, their music is so uplifting with lyrics so beautifully written that you live each song with them and not just listen to the beat.

It was a monumental night for me.

Kodaline is one of those bands that restores your faith in music, it shows you that there's still quality music being made out there and that genius still exists.

The only critique I have about the concert is that it was too short for my taste. But then again, nothing lasts forever, especially beautiful things, they tend to be so ephemeral.

Music is one of the most beautiful and precious things about this life, it is what keeps me going every day, getting to experience it live (for the first time !) brought my love for it to an even higher level I didn't even know existed.

Thank you Kodaline for this magical night and I wish with all my heart to see you again soon.

(I remember waking up the next day thinking that it was all just a dream until I saw the videos I've recorded on my phone !)

It continues to amaze me as to how four young men from Dublin can bring so much happiness to my life and leave me with amazing memories I will never forget. Mark, Steve, Vinny and Jason are the four members of Kodaline, and the four people who I really look up to. I have been a Kodaline fan for many years now and can proudly say I have had the opportunity of seeing this band live twice. Given the fact the fact I am also Irish, I feel I can really connect with Kodaline and their Amazing songs. Their music can have me dancing one minute, and filling with tears the next. When I saw Kodaline for the first time in Killarney I was truly blown away. They began their set with "After the fall," which was the perfect start in my opinion. It was an upbeat song and so it got the crowd going. From there on in they had a brilliant set list. One of my favourites was "Love Like This," as Steve played the harmonica and they really got the crowd involved. Throughout the whole night they kept interacting with the audience and were genuinely thankful for the support which was lovely to see. "All I want," was preformed perfectly on the night as the crowd went quiet in awe and anticipation and it’s safe to say that no one was disappointed. The night over all was absolutely amazing and I can honestly say it was one of the best gigs I’ve been to. Seeing as I was so impressed with this gig, I have gone back to see them since then, and I also have tickets to see them next month. I am very excited about this concert as I know that Kodaline will put on a brilliant show as per usual. I would highly recommend that any fans of Kodaine should definitely go to see them in concert as you will not be disappointed.

The whole evening was a blast!

First of all, they had Andreas Moe as supporting act - which was a positive surprise and surely a Good choice.

But most of all, the crowd, the venue and - above all - the Performance was simply amazing! The atmosphere was awesome throughout the whole gig! They played all the famous Songs, even gave a splendid reprise, including a breathtaking Performance of "All I Want" (which was the one song I secretly hoped most of all they'd Play --- I was overwhelmed when they eventually did). The lads simply did a magnificent job (as anticipated), threw in some gags and laughters, and alltogether were in a great mood, even joking and obviously enjoying the show themselves. Jason did some funny moves for the cameras and Steve surely knows how to motivate the audience. There was a lot of - more or less melodic - singing along involved, and especially the small and rather limited space the venue had to offer made it a more special and private experience than a huge event could have offered. Over all it was a great gig! I'd recommend to attend any concert possible without hesitation. Even the friend I dragged along (who didn't even know about the band before) is now a dedicated fan... Cheers, guys! It was a night worth remembering!

Irish rock bands are just a great type of band to see live. Maybe that's my bias as someone who identifies one hundred and ten percent as Irish and lives in Boston, but I must say that Irish rock bands always provide a show like no other. One of my favorite Irish rock bands has got to be Kodaline, and they definitely don't disappoint when it comes to putting on a heck of a show.

Stephen, Vinny, Jason, and Mark just know how to make music, and their song "Give Me A Minute" certainly proves that. I got to see Kodaline on a recent trip to the Reading Festival in August, and their set was amazing. Their lyrics are really quite good, and make sure that there's more to their music than just the music itself, but their stage presence alone makes them an inspiration in my book. Kodaline's performances of "All Comes Down To You" and "Brand New Day" were definite favorites of mine, and really got the crowd going, too. Speaking of the crowd, this crowd was stellar and really added a lot to the performance. Everyone there at the Reading Festival was so down with Kodaline rocking out and it just made it such a great environment to appreciate such great rock music.

Steve Garrigan, Vinny May, Jason Boland and Mark Prendergast, better known as Kodaline took 2014 by storm riding the success of their debut album 'In a Perfect World'. Stopping off at T in the Park during a lengthy world tour, the band did not disappoint the Scottish revellers as they confidently took to the stage to showcase the music that propelled them into the limelight.

Beginning with the opening strings of 'After The Fall', the boys looked so happy to be onstage performing as they encouraged the crowd to clap along. Stopping only briefly to introduce themselves as Kodaline to which the reply was a huge cheer, they began 'One Day' and the crowd began to sing in unison. This sense of unity was ever-present throughout the gig and it was a real impressive feat to make a festival field feel like an intimate venue.

The anthemic 'High Hopes' received the largest cheer, but from the opening track the band had completely won over their crowd with the irish charm and each song was applauded and sung with equal enthusiasm.

We'd seen Kodaline play Webster Hall, NYC last February.

This time was The Albert Hall, Manchester, England.

Two great (similar) venues... I'm not really a Kodaline fan - my girlfriend is. She loves them and was so excited to go see them again.

The band sounded good and were very tight - I guess this is due to (a) musical talent (b) constant touring - these guys never stop.

I didn't know any of their songs but they were a pretty good live band. Yes, I'd go again... maybe I need to listen to some of their albums first?

Opening band (Ocean Park Standoff) had a lot of energy. Wish I had known about them. Unfortunately, the crowd did not match their energy level. They were pretty good!

Kodaline: Do you follow your fire? If you do, you should have already ended up seeing this band play live. Talented bunch of lads put on an awesome show. The crowd was great. There were entire sections (larger than I'm used to experiencing) of songs where the band stopped playing and just let us sing it for them.

Kodaline was better than expected! They had the whole place singing & Steve, the lead singer had awesome vocals that would silence out the whole crowd. Vincent, the drummer was also beyond amazing. Mark was switching his guitars from acoustic to electric on and off was fun to watch and Jason was amazing with the bass! Loved every minute spent seeing them live. Great stage presence. They will rock your socks off.

90 minutes we were Standing in the crowd and waiting for one of our favourit bands. And then it began: The superb Kodaline Conzert. It was just amazing! The whole concert through there was this Feeling. It's not just the Music. Even the lyrics are perfect. You can relate to it. It was a pity that they didn't Play their song "Talk" the whole way through. But I highly recommend this band. They are even live great!

Marzipanfrau’s profile image

Great seeing them live! The music was very nice, and it was a comfortable and small venue. Lead singer Steve Garrigan didn't seem as engaged as I wish he would have been, but it sounded like he was a little bit ill, so maybe it just wasn't his day. I'm grateful he performed for us anyway, and the rest of the band was absolutely lovely. Thanks so much. Honourary shoutout to the warm-up band LA.

Kodaline Announce Intimate UK Headline Tour

International chart-topping hitmakers kodaline have announced a special intimate run of uk shows in support of their forthcoming stripped-back live album ‘our roots run deep’, out october 14 th via fantasy records/concord..

Marking the announcement they have also released the new single ‘Wherever You Are’ taken from the album. It’s out now on all streaming platforms here , and the poignant performance is available to watch here .

The short intimate tour will start on September 21 st at Wardrobe, Leeds and finish at The Brook, Southampton on September 27 th . Tickets for the UK tour will go on sale at 10am BST on Monday August 1 st here .   Speaking about the tour the band say,

“We can’t wait to be back in the UK to bring you some super intimate shows to celebrate the release of ‘Our Roots Run Deep’ with some of our favourite Independent Music stores around the country. These will be some of the smallest shows we’ve done in a long time and we cannot wait to see you there.”

‘Our Roots Run Deep’ has been recorded from Kodaline’s cosy, sold-out Olympia Theatre show in Dublin during early March 2022. Produced with pristine clarity by fellow Irish cohort, Phillip Magee, ‘Our Roots Run Deep’ features a cross-section of the group’s most treasured tunes and three illuminating covers in over 80-minutes of music with 17 tracks.

Known for the soaring, sing-along pop-rock anthems and lush, yearning ballads that have topped radio and streaming charts around the globe, for these special intimate performances Kodaline utilized largely acoustic instruments including cellist, David Doyle and keyboardist/vocalist, David Prendergast who help give the warm, living room sound added layers of texture and depth.

This can be heard in the album and show opener ‘Wherever You Are’ as well as ‘Brother’ also taken from the album. The videos find the band playing in the same stunning set up fans can expect to see at the intimate forthcoming UK shows.

Regarding ‘Wherever You Are’ vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Steve Garrigan says,

“‘Wherever You Are’ is a song I originally wrote as a present for my girlfriend. It’s a newer song from our fourth album One Day At A Time. It’s connected with a lot of people around the world and has been fun to play live at festivals and full band shows. It was great to hear the crowd singing along to this acoustic version in such an intimate setting. It’s a moment we won’t forget.”

Continuing about the album the band say,

“This album is something we’ve wanted to do for a very long time, it’s also something entirely new to us. It’s a stripped-down acoustic show with no click, which basically means, it’s very raw and unfiltered. We wanted to try and capture the energy and atmosphere of the night as best we could. It was an intimate show recorded in one of our favourite venues in the world, in Dublin City at home in Ireland. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed playing it.”

When Kodaline stepped onstage at the Olympia Theatre in March, Steve Garrigan alongside bandmates bassist/vocalist, Jason Boland; guitarist/vocalist, Mark Prendergast, and drummer/vocalist Vinny May, felt a deep sense of renewal, of their friendship, their brotherhood, and their musical community.

The beloved Irish quartet also felt a sense of release. Two years of pandemic-related separation, from each other, and the audience they had meticulously built since 2011, had underscored how essential that symbiotic relationship really is.

The quieter musical beds pushed the band’s emotionally driven lyrics and intricately woven harmonies to the forefront, deepening their poignant resonance even further. It also left room for the voices of their ecstatic fans, who filled the open spaces every chance they could!

The band and their fans have celebrated the new sense of freedom and togetherness with open arms this summer. Following the announcement of ‘Our Roots Run Deep’ and the release of ‘Brother’ last month, the band went on to headline a huge outdoor show to 25,000 rapturous fans at Dublin’s Malahide Castle, while they have also been performing at major festivals throughout Europe.

Following the UK shows, Kodaline will embark on an extensive tour across Europe with full tour dates listed below:

Kodaline are set to Follow Their Fire around Europe later this year as the group announced details of their upcoming tour.

The Dublin band will play a 22 date tour around the continent, kicking off in Brussels in October.

Sharing the news on their Twitter account, the band said: “It’s been a while… so here goes!

“We’re absolutely pumped to ANNOUNCE OUR EUROPEAN TOUR!

“We cannot wait to come and see you all and play some new tunes too.

“Tickets on sale tomorrow 10am CEST.”

The band also added that they will be playing the festival circuit in some countries where they won’t be doing one-off shows.

They tweeted: “Portugal and Czech Republic we’re playing festivals this summer that we’d love to see you at but we promise we’ll be there to play a headline show very very soon too.”

The High Hopes rockers made the announcement just days after revealing extra tickets for their upcoming Dublin gig will go on sale on Friday.

There’s only a limited number of tickets available, priced at €49.90 and special guests are All Twins, Stephanie Rainey, and The Scratch.

Meanwhile, the group has also been included in the line-up for this year’s Live at the Marquee in Cork City.

Kodaline will play the venue in the Rebel County the night before their Dublin show, kicking off the Cork festival on June 7.

The band - whose members are Steve Garrigan, Mark Prendergrast, Jason Boland and Vincent May -are set to release their third album this year, three years after their previous record.

Drummer Vinny admitted that the album release was delayed because “real life got in the way”.

He told the Irish Mirror: “Because we released the first album and the second one straight after each other and continued to tour we never took time off to do normal stuff for a while.

“We all took holidays and I got married and Jay got married. It feels like it was a long process but things happened.”

Formed in the working-class town of Swords, Ireland, around the talents of Steve Garrigan, Vinnie May, Jr., Jason Boland, and Mark Prendergast, the band released an eponymous EP in 2012, with plans to unleash a full-length outing the following year. At the end of the 2012, Kodaline were shortlisted for the BBC’s Sound of 2013, but they were beaten to the top spot by HAIM. The group issued their debut album, In a Perfect World, in June 2013, which was preceded by the singles “High Hopes” and “Love Like This.” The record was a major success in Ireland, going platinum twice, and it also did well in Britain (it peaked at three and went gold) as well as portions of Europe. Kodaline’s second album, Coming Up for Air, followed in early 2015. The LP peaked at number four on the U.K. charts and spawned the singles “The One” and “Honest.” In the summer of 2017, the band returned with the single “Brother” and the I Wouldn’t Be EP. The next year, they issued the single “Follow Your Fire,” which landed on their pop-leaning third full-length, Politics of Living, again topping the Irish charts. Kodaline’s output remained steady, first with the concert album Live from Irving Plaza, NYC, 4 Dec 2018, followed in 2020 by their fourth album, One Day at a Time, a more stripped-down, back-to-basics, set that bassist Boland produced himself. —  James Christopher Monger, Allmusic.com

Pre-order Our Roots Run Deep HERE .

Our Roots Run Deep was recorded at Kodaline’s sold-out show at Dublin’s cozy Olympia Theatre in early March 2022. Produced with pristine clarity by fellow Irish cohort, Phillip Magee, the 17-track stripped down live album features a cross-section of the group’s most treasured tunes and three illuminating covers in over 80-minutes of music. Previously, Kodaline released the set’s first single “Brother,” watch the live performance clip HERE .

Known for the soaring, sing-along pop-rock anthems and lush ballads that have topped radio and streaming charts around the globe, for these special intimate performances Kodaline, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist, Steve Garrigan; bassist/vocalist, Jason Boland; guitarist/vocalist, Mark Prendergast; and drummer/vocalist Vinny May mostly utilized acoustic instruments including cellist, David Doyle and keyboardist/vocalist, David Prendergast who help give the warm, living room sound added layers of texture and depth.

It’s especially evident on the new album’s show opener and lead track “Wherever You Are,” a yearning fan favorite from the band’s fourth studio album, One Day At A Time .

Regarding “Wherever You Are” Kodaline’s Steve Garrigan said, “‘ Wherever You Are’ is a song I originally wrote as a present for my girlfriend. It was great to hear the crowd singing along to this acoustic version in such an intimate setting.

It’s a moment we won’t forget. ”

About the album, the band stated,

“This album is something we’ve wanted to do for a very long time, it’s also something entirely new to us. It’s a stripped-down acoustic show with no click, which basically means, it’s very raw and unfiltered. We wanted to try and capture the energy and atmosphere of the night as best we could. Fantasy Records
