What is THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride?

First told in the award-winning book by Chris Van Allsburg, this is the story of a child’s Christmas Eve journey. It was adapted to the big screen in 2004. And now it comes alive each year with THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride! All ages can enjoy the experience, warmth, and fun of the Christmas season on a special steam train trip to the North Pole! Certain dates and car types will sell quickly so you’ll want to book soon to reserve your preferred seating!

What to Expect

THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride is our most popular event of the year and is an annual holiday tradition for many riders. While the train excursion is roughly 65 minutes in duration, we recommend allowing 2 hours for the entire adventure so you can enjoy the full experience! The weather can be cold at the North Pole, so we recommend layering properly, even though all the cabins are heated aboard the train. As always, we recommend wearing pajamas to capture the Christmas spirit! Click below for more frequently asked questions about THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train.

THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride – 2023 –

THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride  returns once again to the Colorado Railroad Museum! Sure to re-kindle the Christmas spirit in True Believers,  THE POLAR EXPRESS™  offers a unique, three-part theatrical extravaganza of Holiday Magic. Holiday Caroling and the “Hot Chocolate” song and dance kick things off each evening, performed in our newly renovated, heatedPOLAR EXPRESS™ Pavilion. A ride to the North Pole aboard vintage coaches, pulled by an authentic, coal-fired steam locomotive, is next. And finally, visiting with Santa tops off the experience!

Tickets will go on sale to the public on Tuesday, October 3.  Museum Members will have an exclusive pre-purchase opportunity beginning one week earlier. Not a Member?  Click Here  to learn about the benefits of Museum Membership, including advance purchase opportunities for  THE POLAR EXPRESS™  Train Ride!

Watch for further updates right here on our website. All Aboard for Holiday Magic!

ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE The experience begins in our newly renovated THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Pavilion. Here you, your family and friends will gather around tables, sing carols, and watch a cabaret-style show as the “Hot Chocolate” song and dance unfolds before your eyes. Nibble on a tasty cookie, and sip your hot chocolate as the story of  The Polar Express  is dramatically re-enacted before your eyes.

The experience continues, as you step outside to witness the dramatic arrival of THE POLAR EXPRESS™. This symphony of smoke and steam emerges from the darkness, and the Conductor loudly asks if anyone would like climb aboard. Soon, you’re on your way to—the North Pole? Well yes, of course! There, you watch eagerly as the elves sing and dance, and Santa gives out The First Gift of Christmas.

Once the train with its sleepy passengers returns from the North Pole, you’ll have the opportunity to visit with Santa—and pick up your very own First Gift of Christmas, a Silver Bell! THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride remains an experience that you won’t want to miss. The entire, multi-part show is updated each year to feature several new twists!

TICKETING OPTIONS For 2023, two ticketing levels are available:  Standard Seating  and  First Class . For Standard Seating, guests may purchase tickets for the specific number in your party. First Class seating remains available for purchase only in tables of four.

We’re pleased to offer Discounted Pricing on all performances before Thanksgiving!   In past years (including 2020-2022) this event has sold out quickly. For 2023, you won’t want to wait to purchase your tickets!

Standard Seating $80/person ages 2-15, $100/person ages 16 and older (Lap Riders under age 2 Free) Performances prior to Thanksgiving, 10% off rates listed above

Your group will be seated together in THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Pavilion for the cabaret-style show, and then you’ll board one of three coaches for your ride to the North Pole! Hot cocoa, cookie, and—of course—a Silver Bell is included with each ticket. Lap Riders do not have access to individual seating.  NOTE: Groups wishing to be seated together must purchase all tickets in a single transaction.

First Class $475/table of four (plus up to two Lap Riders under age 2 free) Performances prior to Thanksgiving, 10% off rate listed above

First Class groups are seated together right in front of the stage in our THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Pavilion. Then, you’ll board our parlor car to share your own table for your ride to the North Pole! First Class seating is available only as a complete table; your group can be up to four in size per table (plus up to two lap riders). Each table receives four commemorative Polar Express cocoa mugs, a copy of The Polar Express  illustrated hardbound book, plus two special, added gifts. Hot cocoa, cookies, and—of course—First Class Silver Bells are included!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION For 2023, THE POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride performances are scheduled three times each evening. The season launches with performances various evenings each week, increasing to daily after Thanksgiving. Opening Night is November 10, and the final performances take place on December 23.

Arrival time is very important for 2023 due to our Polar Express Pavilion seating arrangements. Please make sure you’re on time so you don’t miss any of the cabaret-style pre-show, Hot Chocolate song and dance performance, and dramatic reading and re-enactment of The Polar Express  story. Suggested arrival times are 4:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m., or 7:30 p.m. to enjoy the pre-show; the Main Show begins promptly at 5 p.m., 6:30 p.m., or 8 p.m. Your magical train ride to the North Pole follows, but it’s only one chapter in a multi-part theatrical experience!

Hop on 'The Polar Express' with these Christmas train rides in Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas

Hot chocolate? They've got it.

Rail lines across the country are adding a bit of whimsy this holiday season as Santa trains and rides themed after the Chris Van Allsburg children's book and Tom Hanks animated movie "The Polar Express" disembark from stations near and far.

For the young and young at heart, these rides can be the highlight of the holidays prior to Santa's annual Christmas Eve flight.

USA TODAY Network reporters across Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas compiled this list of Christmas-themed rides that are worth planning for this holiday season and beyond.

Polar Express train rides in Colorado and New Mexico

Colorado railroad museum polar express.

In need of a little Christmas magic? Hitch a ride on the Colorado Railroad Museum’s Polar Express. The authentic coal-fired steam locomotive runs every year from mid-November until just before Christmas, taking riders on a journey to the North Pole by way of the museum’s 14-acre railway park in Golden.

The 90-minute experience is pulled directly from the pages of “The Polar Express” and its movie adaptation, with family carol singing, a cabaret show, hot chocolate, cookies and a dramatic reenactment of the popular children’s book complete with dancing elves and a visit with Santa Claus.

Due to its popularity, 2021 tickets for the Polar Express train ride have already sold out. Mark your calendars for next year, though. Online tickets typically go on sale to the general public the first week of October.

This year, standard seating cost $80 per person aged 2-15 and $100 per person aged 16 and older. Children younger than 2 attend for free. First-class tables for four cost $475.

Durango and Silverton Train Polar Express

Like the Colorado Railroad Museum, The Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad of southwestern Colorado runs annual holiday rides based upon the beloved children's book. Riders are picked up by the heritage railroad’s train in Durango before setting off for the North Pole.

Hot chocolate and sweet treats are served onboard while the train conductor reads “The Polar Express.” Once at the North Pole, riders are greeted by a light show set to holiday music. On the ride back to Durango, Santa visits with each coach car and hands out his traditional first gift of Christmas.

The Durango and Silverton Polar Express train runs through New Year's Day. Depending on what coach car you select, tickets can range from $39 to $67 per adult and $29 to $57 for children 2-11 years old. Tickets can be purchased at durangotrain.com .

Georgetown Loop Railroad

Mix a history lesson and holiday tradition together this year with a ride on Colorado’s Georgetown Loop Railroad. From mid-November through Jan. 2, the historic railroad’s trio of steam-powered locomotives take riders on themed holiday excursions like the daytime Santa’s North Pole Adventure, nighttime Santa’s Lighted Forest ride and a Victorian holiday excursion, which takes riders on both day and night rides and features an appearance by Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future.

Santa’s North Pole Adventure and Santa’s Lighted Forest rides both operate through Christmas Eve, while the railroad’s Victorian holiday celebration takes place Dec. 26 through Jan. 2. Basic coach class tickets for all of the excursions cost $32.95 per adult and $22.95 per child. The executive class and parlor cars are sold by the table and can range from $75.95 for a two-person table to $170 for a four-person table.

Tickets sell out fast, so buy yours today at georgetownlooprr.com . The Georgetown Loop Railroad operates out of two depot locations in Georgetown and neighboring Silver Plume.

Royal Gorge Railway

The Royal Gorge Route Railroad offers its Santa Express Train departing from the historic Santa Fe Depot, 401 Water St., in Cañon City, and chugging through the scenic Royal Gorge Canyon to the North Pole and back.

This year, the Santa Express Train travels to the beautifully decorated North Pole up to four times daily through Dec. 31 (except Christmas Day) with departures at 9:15 a.m., 12:30, 4 and 7 p.m. The festivities include popular holiday songs, cheerful decor, a team of holiday elves bringing hot chocolate and cookies, and a chat with Santa Claus.

The jolly old elf himself presents a special gift to each child. Costs range from $64 to $94 per child, depending on class of service, and $74 to $104 per adult, depending on class of service.

Tickets are available online at royalgorgeroute.com , or same-day bookings can be made by calling 719-276-4000.

Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railway

This scenic ride between southwest Colorado and northwest New Mexico is not offering a holiday train this year, but visit  cumbrestoltec.com for other offerings and future updates about next holiday season.

The North Pole – Santa's Workshop

Want to visit the North Pole, but don’t want to traverse the globe to do so? Be sure to consider this stop when traveling to any of Colorado's holiday-themed trains.

Peace Through Strength? When Nixon Went to Moscow

Peace Through Strength? When Nixon Went to Moscow

  • Video: Global Warming Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit ...
  • Article: Global Warming Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit ...
  • Entry: Global Warming Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit ...

On May 22, 1972, Richard Nixon became the first American president to visit Moscow, the capital and largest city of what was then the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. The nine-day summit came on the heels of Nixon’s more famous visit to China earlier in the year, when he and Chairman Mao reinitiated Chinese-American relations and began a long process of reintegrating the two societies’ political, cultural, and economic institutions. (Nixon, in 1959, visited Moscow as vice-president, something I’ll write about it July, so stay tuned!)

So why did Nixon, one of the most ardent anti-Communists in American politics during the late 1960s and early 1970s, go to Moscow at the height of the Cold War? How was he able to even pull it off? The counterintuitive answer is that it was because he was so hawkish. Only Nixon could go to the Soviet Union (and China earlier in 1972).

Nixon’s anti-Communist credentials were so sound that he could spend political capital making inroads with Communist enemies. His actions were viewed as safe by the American electorate because, for better or worse, the public saw Nixon as somebody who would not betray American values at the negotiating table with the Soviets. Nixon’s hawkishness provided moral cover for America’s withdrawal from Vietnam, and its peaceful overtures to the two most powerful and aggressively anti-capitalist regimes in the world (China and the USSR).

This dynamic plays out in a number of examples in the world today, too. Donald Trump comes to mind, of course, but so does Narendra Modi’s populist regime in India (relations between India and Pakistan have never been so peaceful). Xi Jinping’s China can also be viewed in this light. At home, Chairman Xi is a strident nationalist, but abroad, he and his policymakers have been vigorously building multilateral relationships with Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and even the United States using that hawkishness at home as one of its diplomatic cards at the negotiating table. In the past, Otto von Bismarck’s German federation achieved peace on the European continent through strength.

Anecdotally, Republicans from California tend to be a bit more hawkish than their national counterparts. Nixon and Reagan come to mind, but so do many of California’s GOP members in the House of Representatives today. This is due, in part, to the fact that California is so far to the left that GOP operatives have to distinguish their differences with Democrats in a more pronounced manner. California’s Democrats are, for better or worse, viewed as the standard-bearers for all things left-wing today: big government, open immigration (whether legal or not), and world peace. This is a caricature, of course, since people like Nancy Pelosi and Babs Boxer have easily traceable hawkish records on policies like foreign affairs, but that’s just the nature of electoral politics in one-party states and of the narrative of our media establishment. California’s Republicans, outnumbered and always under attack, have no other option but to oppose instinctively their counterparts’ public aura. If the Democrats there are in favor of peace with communists (even if their voting record says otherwise), the Republicans have to go to their constituents and say they are against it.

Nixon was the first president to visit Moscow. FDR had visited the Soviet Union in 1945, but the conference he attended, along with Winston Churchill and Josef Stalin, was held at Yalta, a resort town in present-day Crimea. The Moscow Summit itself was rather interesting, too. Nixon signed numerous accords with the Soviet Union while there, but he did so with numerous heads of Soviet bureaucracies rather than solely with Brezhnev. What this can tell us is that the Soviet Union was far more decentralized in 1972 than many hawkish (and ideological) observers claimed.

After Stalin’s butcherous rein, Khrushchev came to power and tried to eliminate the brutal elements of Stalin’s regime while simultaneously wielding the power Stalin had held. But power thrives on fear and violence, and reformers took advantage of Khrushchev’s less brutal approach to institute a number of reforms in governance, including the dismantling of the General Secretary’s omnipotent position in the USSR’s political hierarchy. What emerged by the time Khrushchev’s successor, Brezhnev, came to govern was a much more decentralized political structure that sought to realize a true union of Soviet socialist republics. The fact that this realization still failed to replace capitalism  as a superior producer of goods, services, and human freedom should not shroud the fact that reform was achieved in the Soviet Union. Indeed, the fact that hard-fought reform in Soviet civil and political life failed to achieve any of the USSR’s economic goals is a strength when pointing out socialism’s long list of failures.

Incidentally, one of the reasons I didn’t include Gorbachev in the l ist of dictators who “gave up” power is because he wasn’t a dictator. Gorbachev inherited a political system that was decentralized and dedicated to representativeness. If anything, the executive branch of the USSR was more decentralized than its American counterpart, a fact illustrated best by Nixon having to sign accords with a number of high-ranking Soviet officials.

So what can all this history teach us about today’s world? I look at hawks and doves. Hawks may make boorish claims, and they may say stupid things, but maybe, just maybe, we should give the hawks a chance.
